NHTSA Probes Brake Problems on GM Pickups, SUVs

      May 2, 2005
Officials from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) are investigating 1.3 million full-sized General Motors pickups and SUVs to determine whether there is a brake defect that will mandate a widespread recall.

NHTSA is investigating whether corrosion develops under the antilock brake wheel speed sensors. Corrosion near the sensor could increase stopping distances at low speed.

NHTSA reports it has received 120 complaints about the problem. The complaints include 22 reported crashes with four claimed injuries.

GM built the vehicles that are the subject of the review in the 1999-2002 model years. The trucks are in states with severe winter weather. Potentially affected models include the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban and Avalanche; GMC Sierra and Yukon; and Cadillac Escalade.

If the review discloses a defect in the braking system, GM must recall the trucks.

GM told NHTSA in November 2004 it was recalling 150,000 full-sized pickups and SUVs in eastern Canada because of corrosion in antilock brakes. GM did not plan a U.S. recall because it said the incident rate was much lower in the United States. But NHTSA says GM promised to monitor the situation.

Hitachi Cable Manchester Inc. Recalls Plenum Network Cables

The recalled cables do not meet the fire resistance standards for cable used in plenum applications. Plenum is the space typically used for air circulation in heating and air conditioning systems. If the cables were exposed to a fire source, smoke or fire could spread more quickly than permitted by the standard for this type of cable.

This recall is only for certain CMP cables used in plenum (air duct) applications. CMP cables used in riser (non-plenum) applications are not included in this recall.

The recalled cables typically were installed in data centers and other commercial applications. The part numbers for the recalled cables are 39419-50 (25-pair, category 5e); 30171-100 (50-pair, category 5e); and 30105-50 (25-pair, category 5). Only HCM brand cables with the following lot numbers are affected by this recall: AE589 and A4309 through A5551. The part number and lot number are printed on the jacket of the cables.

The cable was sold by authorized electrical or data communication distributors from about June 2003 through December 2004.

Cables installed in a plenum application will be removed and replaced. Users should contact HCM to coordinate this work among HCM, the property owner and an installer. Because these products were constructed in compliance with HCMs new listing with UL for CMR (riser) cables, they may remain in place if they have already been installed in riser applications.

HCM is directly notifying known purchasers about this recall. The 25-pair version of the recalled cable also was manufactured by HCM under a private label arrangement for Superior Essex Inc. Superior Essex has already contacted all affected customers who purchased this cable.

      Contact: Contact HCM toll-free at (800) 772-0116, Ext. 229, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.

The light fixtures were sold in a variety of styles and shapes and hang from the ceiling. Only models 31021-794, 31022-794, 66022-794, 5217-02, 5217-746 and 5217-786 are included in the recall due to a component part problem with the screw collar. The model number is printed on the inside of the light canopy, the round plate that attaches the light fixture to the ceiling, and on the light fixture packaging and receipts.

The lights were sold by home improvement outlets, lighting showrooms and contractors nationwide. Contractors sold and installed the 5217 model fixtures from October 2003 through October 2004, and the 31021, 31022 and 66022 models from June 2004 through October 2004 for between $300 and $400.

Consumers should contact Sea Gull Lighting to receive instructions on having the recalled ceiling light fixtures repaired by a licensed electrician.

Consumer Contact: Sea Gull Lighting at (800) 347-5483 between 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firms Web site at www.seagulllighting.com.

Possible Pinched Finger Prompts Nissan Quest Recall

      October 17, 2005
Nissan North America is recalling 109,437 Quest minivans because an adjustment mechanism on the second-row seats may cause injuries, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

NHTSA reports that the vehicles involved in the recall are from the 2004-2006 model years.

"Someone attempting to operate the second row seat adjuster may pinch a finger in the moving seat adjustment mechanism which could cause an injury," NHTSA says.

On Quest Minivans built through June 28, 2004, dealers will replace and reinforce the inboard second row seat adjustment. On vehicles produced after June, 29 through September 26, 2005 dealers will only reinforce the adjuster.

The recall will begin on December 15, 2005.
