Nissan Recalls Muranos, Maximas for Ignition Problem

    October 21, 2006
Nissan Motor Co. is recalling approximately 132,000 vehicles around the world including 80,000 in the U.S. because of an ignition key defect.

Nissan is recalling about 70,000 Muranos and 10,000 Maxima sedans in North America, according to a company spokesperson.

The car sometimes will not start properly and occasionally the engines start even when the ignition is turned off and the driver moves the steering wheel, according to Nissan.

Nissan will replace several parts between the ignition switch and starter motor.

The recalls involve only models using Nissan's "intelligent key" system with integrated circuit chip which allows drivers to open their car doors with their keys still inside their pockets by just pressing on the handle.

Drivers don't need to insert the intelligent key to get the car to start and can keep the key anywhere nearby.

Nissan says the problem is not with the key or its chip but with ignition connections inside the vehicle.

NHTSA Recalls 404,000 Chevy, GMC and Isuzu Pickups

      May 2, 2006
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is recalling 404,733 Chevrolet, GMC and Isuzu pickup trucks because the brake lights may fail.

Federal regulators report that the exterior brake light switch on the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Isuzu I-280 and Isuzu may fail and cause the permanent loss of the brake light functions or may cause the brake light to illuminate all the time.

NHTSA is warning owners of the pickup truck that they may not be aware the brake lights have failed and the failure could cause a rear-end crash since anyone following the pickup would not know the brakes were applied.

According to NHTSA, the center-mounted brake light is affected whenever the brake lights fail to come on or remain illuminated.

Trailer brake lights connected to the pickups will mimic the vehicles brake lamps when either condition occurs, NHTSA reports. If the truck lights fail, the trailer lights will fail.

In trucks equipped with cruise control, the brake light switch failure will also disable the cruise control system according to the agency.

Chevrolet, GMC and Isuzu dealers will replaced the brake light switch assembly when the recall gets under way.

General Motors has not notified NHTSA of the recall or owner notification schedule.

Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; GMC at 1-866-996-9463 OR Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

J.C. Penney Recalls "Crazy Daisy" Lamps

      August 9, 2006
J.C. Penney is recalling about 3,000 "Crazy Daisy" 3-in-1 electronic motion shade lamps. The lamp's electrical circuit board can spark and overheat due to an electrical problem, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

J.C. Penney has received one report of the electric circuit board overheating and melting the wires in a lamp. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled lamps have a four-way switch that allows the lamp to function as a moving light so that patterns revolve around the shade. The lamps can be used as a basic lamp or as a night light with glowing stripe or floral patterns. The lamp shade is plastic and the finish on the base of the lamp is brushed steel.

The lamps were sold at J.C. Penney's stores nationwide, its catalog and its Web site from June 2005 through March 2006 for about $30.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lamps and return them to any J.C. Penney store for a full refund. Lamps purchased through a catalog or through the Web site may be returned to the nearest J.C. Penney store with a catalog desk.
