GM Recalls 2009 SUVs to Fix Seat Belts

    Enclave, Traverse, Acadia, Outlook affected

    December 2, 2008
General Motors is recalling about 16,000 2009 models of its Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook to fixd a problem with the rear seat belt buckle assembly.

CPSC Releases Toy Safety Tips for Holiday Shoppers

WASHINGTON, Nov. 23, 1999 -- As the holiday season approaches, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges gift-givers to keep safety in mind when choosing toys for young children. In 1998, CPSC received reports of 14 toy-related deaths and estimates that more than 120,000 children were treated in hospital emergency rooms for toy-related injuries.

"Toys are an important part of holiday gift-giving, and CPSC is on the job 365 days a year to make sure toys are as safe as possible," said CPSC Chairman Ann Brown. "CPSC's goal is to prevent deaths and injuries; unfortunately, each year some children are hurt by toys. By always reading labels and being safety conscious, parents and caregivers can help prevent toy-related injuries."

CPSC requires labels to be on all toys marketed for children from 3 years old up to 6 years old if the toys pose a choking hazard to children under age 3. These labels tell consumers two critical things: That a toy is not safe for younger children and why it is not safe. Before CPSC issued these labeling requirements, it was more difficult for consumers to know that certain toys they bought for older children could be a danger to younger kids.

CPSC has the most stringent toy safety standards in the world, and toys on store shelves are safer because of the day-to-day compliance work by CPSC. In fiscal year 1999, CPSC obtained 95 toy and children's product recalls involving about 60 million product units to help prevent tragic injuries and deaths. CPSC obtained some of the largest toy recalls in the agency's history, including more than 10 million ride-on battery powered vehicles, more than 10 million toy basketball set nets, and more than 19 million dive sticks.

The following tips will help consumers choose appropriate toys this holiday season and all year round:
    • Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills, and interest level of the intended child. Toys too advanced may pose safety hazards to younger children.

    • For infants, toddlers, and all children who still mouth objects, avoid toys with small parts which could pose a fatal choking hazard.

    • Look for sturdy construction, such as tightly secured eyes, noses, and other potential small parts.

    • For all children under age 8, avoid toys that have sharp edges and points.

    • Do not purchase electric toys with heating elements for children under age 8.

    • Be a label reader. Look for labels that give age recommendations and use that information as a guide.

    • Check instructions for clarity. They should be clear to you, and when appropriate, to the child.

    • Immediately discard plastic wrappings on toys, which can cause suffocation, before they become deadly playthings.

By using common sense and these safety suggestions, holiday shoppers can make informed decisions when purchasing toys for children.

      Christmas Tree Shop Galileo Thermometers

      Christmas Tree Shop

      WASHINGTON, June 19, 2001 --

Nantucket Distributing Co. is voluntarily recalling about 28,000 Galileo thermometers. The thermometers contain a liquid that is flammable and a hazardous substance that could be harmful or fatal if swallowed. There have been five reports of thermometers breaking, resulting in two injuries. A man suffered burns to his hands when the thermometer broke near a stove and ignited his clothing. Another man suffered smoke inhalation when extinguishing a fire caused by candles igniting a broken thermometer.

The thermometers are made of glass. They are cylinder- shaped measuring about 17-inches high. Inside the cylinder are floating small glass spheres filled with various colors of liquid. Attached to each sphere is a metal disk with different temperatures embossed on both sides. The spheres float up and down within the cylinder to identify a temperature based on their position within the cylinder. A small gold sticker that says "Made in China" is on the bottom of the cylinder. Bungee Baby Bouncer Recalled

WASHINGTON, May 25, 1999 -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), E and I Inc., of Bancroft, Idaho, is recalling about 4,000 Bungee Baby Bouncers. The device allows a baby to bounce while supported in a harness or "belly band" by an elastic "bungee cord," suspended from a doorway. Knots tied in the black rope that supports the bouncer can unravel, causing the baby to fall.

CPSC and E and I Inc. have received six reports of knots failing. In four of these incidents, babies bumped their heads from falls.

The Bungee Baby Bouncer includes a purple harness, a clamp that attaches to the doorway frame, two wooden dowels measuring 15.5 inches and 3.875 inches long, a rope and a purple elastic bungee cord. "E and I's BUNGEE BABY BOUNCER" is written on the harness, and "BUNGEE BABY BOUNCER" is written on the doorway clamp. The product's safety precautions advise the bouncer is to be used for babies approximately 4 months old to walking age, and for babies not heavier than 25 pounds.

Chelsea and Scott's One Step Ahead catalogs, and baby specialty retailers in Utah and Idaho sold the bouncers from September 1998 through March 1999 for between $35 and $40.

Consumers should immediately stop using their Bungee Baby Bouncer, and return only the bungee assembly to E and I Inc. for a free repair. Consumers will be reimbursed postage charges. Consumers can send their bungee assembly to: E and I Inc., P.O. Box 66, Bancroft ID 83217-0066. The metal hook that attaches to the doorway clamp can break, however, a safety cable prevents the bouncer from falling. The company also is replacing these metal hooks as part of this repair.

      Porsche Recalls Cayenne SUVs

      February 20, 2008
Porsche is recalling almost 19,000 Cayenne SUVs worldwide to relocate the fuel line in the luxury vehicle.

The German automaker said the recall affects Cayenne models sold between November 30, 2006, and January 18, 2008.

In rare instances, according to Porsche, the engine movement in the Cayenne can cause abrasion marks in the fuel line.
