      Kids and Guns

Much time, money and effort goes into keeping children safe.  We have infant car seats, child-proof outlet covers, stair gates and on and on.

As the seemingly constant recall of many of these devices shows, it's not easy to come up with a fool-proof safety device.

Yet one crucial ounce of prevention is extremely simple and virtually failsafe but often overlooked -- locking up guns.

At least 10,000 times per year, an American child gets hold of a gun and fires it, according to a 1997 study by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. As a result, about 800 people die each year, most of them children.

Another study, this one by the National Center for Health Statistics, found that from 1988 to 1997, more than 2,300 American children under age 14 died from accidental shootings.

So far the federal government and the states have failed to pass legislation requiring childproof handguns.  Such locks are available at any gun or sporting goods store, though, and they are very moderately priced -- anywhere from $10 to $30.

An even simpler alternative -- practiced by sportsmen, law enforcement officers and hobbyists -- is to keep all guns securely stored in a locked metal cabinet that children cannot penetrate.

Kids are curious and they will play with guns if they can get their hands on them.  The only sure way to avoid tragic mishaps is to lock up the guns or use safety devices that render them inoperable.

      Where to get them

      • Gunlocks Online Offers both keyed and combination locks.
      • Maximum Value A variety of gun locks for around $3 each.
      • Trigger Lock Ditto.

We don't endorse, recommend, guarantee or otherwise lavish praise upon these vendors and we are not compensated in any way for these links, which are provided only as an example of what's available.
