Mitsubishi Recalls SUVs, Chrysler Recalls Pacificas

    March 4, 2005
Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and the Chrysler group have been hit with new U.S. safety recalls. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the North American division of problem-plagued Mitsubishi was recalling 65,436 of its mid-sized Endeavor SUVs, built between 2004 and 2005, because their parking brakes may fail.

Mitsubishi has been struggling to shore up its image since 2000, when it was discovered that it had been hiding safety records and secretly repairing faulty vehicles for more than two decades in Japan. Its U.S. vehicle sales have fallen by about 44 percent this year.

NHTSA also said the Chrysler group was recalling 43,180 of its Pacifica SUVs because some may experience intermittent or eventual total failure of their halogen headlamps.

The Pacificas recalled are all from the 2005 model year, the agency said.

    Toyota Tacoma Parking Brake Recall

    March 15, 2005
Toyota is recalling 22,228 of its 2005-model Tacoma pickup trucks sold in the United States to fix a potential problem with their parking brakes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem stems from the fact that the parking brake cable lock nut on the trucks may not have been tightened properly.

"The lock nut may loosen and come off, which will reduce the effectiveness of the parking brake," NHTSA advises on its Web site.

"This condition could allow the vehicle to roll if the transmission is not placed into the 'park' position," according to the agency.

NHTSA says the parking brake defect has only been detected on Tacomas equipped with automatic transmissions.
