Proceed with great caution! Auto transporters have created more business for car rental companies than anyone we can think of. Sure, it's easy to find someone with an impressive Web site who'll give you a great price for moving your buggy across the country. But look out! Movers, auto transporters and trucking companies in general are largely deregulated and there is very little consumer protection built into the system, if it can be called that.

In most cases, we'd say the best way to get a car across the country is to drive it yourself. Second best is to have someone you know and trust drive it for you. Something else to consider: Sell your car and simply buy another one at your destination. And beware! Don't ship personal belongings in your car. They should be shipped separately.

Our thanks to Coni, a veteran transporter, for some excellent steps you can take to protect yourself.
