American Home Shield is our pick for value thanks to its high payout limits and competitive pricing. The digital claims process is streamlined, and the app allows for convenient video chats with repair experts. If the issue can be resolved over a video call, you won’t have to pay a service fee.

We also like that AHS covers rust, corrosion and sediment damage, which is especially relevant given the hard water issues in Texas.

What to consider: AHS has fewer add-on options than most home warranty companies, so it’s harder to customize your plan.

    Pros
    • Easy claims process
    • High coverage limits
    • Covers rust, corrosion and sediment damage
    • Cancel at any time
    Cons
    • Occasional service delays
    • Relatively high service fees

Base plans from AHS start at $29.99 a month. You can choose a $100 or $125 deductible, but be aware that this affects your monthly cost. All plans have a total limit of $50,000 per agreement term.

    • ShieldSilver ($29.99 or $39.99): Covers 14 major systems, including heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing. This plan has a $5,000 limit per covered HVAC system.
    • ShieldGold ($49.99 or $59.99): Covers 24 appliances and systems, including kitchen and laundry equipment. It also has a $5,000 limit per covered HVAC system and limits each covered appliance to $2,000.
    • SheldPlatinum ($79.99 or $89.99): The most comprehensive plan. It has the same HVAC system limit but raises the annual per-appliance limit to $4,000 and includes roof leak coverage up to $1,000.

    Add-ons and discounts

    • Optional add-ons
      • Septic pump: $4.99

We like that Liberty offers over 30 add-ons, including things like pest control, power washing and window cleaning. That’s above and beyond what ordinary home warranty companies provide.

What to consider: There's a $500 coverage limit for electrical and plumbing fixes, which is lower than most competitors.

Texas customers say Liberty’s reps can be polite and helpful. However, we’ve also seen reviews that describe long delays and denied or underpaid claims.

“Representative was very friendly and helpful. Stayed on top of my claim to be sure it was being handled and taken care of. Explained the claim process very clearly. Made sure the claim was completed in a timely manner. I was very pleased with the whole process.”

Based on quotes from our top picks, people pay roughly $30 to $90 per month for home warranties on average, though more expensive options are available (as well as some cheaper a la carte options).

The total cost usually depends on the following:

      • The scope of your base plan (basic, systems‑only, appliance‑only or combo)
      • Any optional add‑ons (e.g., roof, pool or second refrigerator)
      • Your service fee

How to choose a home warranty in Texas

While they say everything is bigger in Texas, the cost of repairing your home doesn’t have to be. A home warranty can protect your wallet from unexpected repair bills for covered home systems and appliances.

Not all systems are included in every home warranty policy, so it’s important to make sure you get the right coverage.

Because much of Texas experiences all four seasons, having a well-rounded plan is pretty important in the Lone Star State. Whether you’re dealing with a heat wave or a cold snap, coverage for major home systems, like your air conditioning and plumbing, means you can keep your home comfortable without paying large repair bills.

Typical plan structures you'll see in Texas include:

      • Appliance‑only plans: These cover kitchen and laundry appliances.
      • Systems‑only plans: System-focused plans cover HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
      • Combo or whole‑home plans: This coverage, which bundles appliance and system coverage, is the most popular option.

Another factor to consider is your home warranty company’s reputation for customer service and support. Because Texas weather can change quickly and drastically, you want to work with a company you can trust to repair an item as soon as possible, even in an emergency.

What Texans say about home warranties

Texans’ firsthand stories highlight exactly what matters — from fast AC fixes in triple-digit heat to reasonable response times — when you’re picking a home warranty. Some takeaways from reviews on our site:

      • Timely help is essential during the state’s brutal summers, as Thomas in Austin encountered: “At first, they said they could have somebody out by Wednesday, and that was five days out. I live in Texas in Austin and at the time I called, it was 105 and inside the house was 85.” After explaining he had a toddler in the house, the warranty company sent out a tech immediately.
      • Reliable contractors make a noticeable difference once a claim is filed: “Anything that I've needed to be fixed, they've come out and got it handled. So far, the service has been good,” Chintel in Killeen said about their experience with multiple appliance claims.
      • It’s important to understand how provider networks affect wait times: “I waited 36 hours then contacted the vendor who stated he doesn't do that type of work.” — Frank in Austin

      Home warranty regulations in Texas

Home warranties, also known as service contracts, are regulated by the Service Contract Regulatory Act in Texas. As of Sept. 1, 2021, this act is enforced by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

According to the Service Contract Regulatory Act, warranty companies in Texas must maintain one of these three financial security items in order to protect consumers:

      • A reimbursement insurance policy
      • A funded reserve account and a security deposit
      • A net worth of at least $100 million

Each customer in Texas must, by law, be given their own copy of the service contract with enough time to cancel and receive a full refund. Service contract providers also have to allow buyers to cancel their service contracts at any time.

If you cancel before the 31st day of your contract, you’re eligible for a full refund with no cancellation fee (minus any claims paid). If you cancel after that, the warranty company must give you a prorated refund, and they can charge up to $50 in cancellation fees.

If you have an issue with your home warranty company, you can provide a statement to the TDLR.

      FAQ

Is a home warranty worth it in Texas?

It depends. In many cases, homeowners find the cost of the warranty worth it just for the peace of mind it provides. Some people even save thousands of dollars on covered repairs or replacements. However, that’s not always the case; in some situations, you may end up spending more for the warranty than you would have for a repair.

If you’re on a tight budget and think one or two unexpected repairs could really harm you financially, a home warranty can help you budget in a more predictable way.

Is a home warranty required in Texas?

No, a home warranty is not required in Texas. In short, you don’t need a home warranty. These are completely optional service contracts designed to help cover some of the costs of homeownership.

While they’re not required in the way that homeowners insurance often is, they can offer a few benefits, including:

      • Protection against large, out-of-pocket repair bills
      • A simplified way to budget for home repairs
      • Access to a network of contractors (especially helpful if you’re new to Texas)
      • Guarantees on service after it's completed
      • Incentive for homebuyers

If these are things that are important to you, a home warranty might be a good idea.

» LEARN MORE: How much does appliance repair cost?

What’s the difference between a home warranty and homeowners insurance?

Home warranties and home insurance policies are two distinct forms of protection. Homeowners insurance is required by mortgage lenders and covers damage to your home and belongings due to events like fires, storms and theft.

A home warranty, on the other hand, is optional and covers repairs or replacements for appliances and systems that break down due to normal wear and tear.

» COMPARE: Home warranty vs. home insurance

Do home warranties in Texas cover older systems and appliances?

Many home warranty plans in Texas do cover older systems and appliances, provided they meet the company's eligibility requirements and did not have a known preexisting condition. If your appliance or system fails due to normal wear and tear, most warranties will still honor the claim. It’s useful to review any plan exclusions or age limits — some companies place additional restrictions on units past a certain age.

Can a home warranty be transferred to a new homeowner in Texas?

In many cases, yes, home warranties are transferable. Most home warranty contracts in Texas allow the transfer of coverage to a new owner if you sell your home. The transfer process often requires notifying the warranty provider and completing a short form or updating the contract details. This can actually add value for a potential homebuyer.

      Methodology

The ConsumerAffairs Research Team used a data-backed process informed by expert editorial judgment and verified customer reviews. We started with home warranty companies available in Texas, then evaluated which performed best for local residents.

We prioritized real customer experiences in Texas but also considered national reviews. We discarded companies with fewer than five in-state reviews. Our review evaluation focused on seven satisfaction drivers:

      • Technician quality
      • Customer service
      • Claims handling
      • Punctuality and speed
      • Coverage
      • Value
      • Refunds and payouts

In addition to reviews, we compared the companies on:

      • Coverage options: We broke down each company’s home warranty plans to ensure they offer multiple coverage options to fit a variety of needs.
      • Plan flexibility: Customizing a plan can tailor it to your needs and help you save money. We checked to see what customization options each company offers, including the ability to select a service fee and the number and cost of add-on coverages.
      • Cost: Costs for home warranty plans vary based on the size of the home and the type of coverage, but we confirmed our top picks’ prices are competitive in the home warranty industry.
      • Service call fee: We looked at the service fee each company charged to send a technician to your house to ensure our top picks are in line with industry standards.
      • Service guarantee: The longer a company guarantees its repairs, the more protection you get if the same issue comes back. We considered how each provider backs its workmanship.
