How does Frontdoor work?
When you have a maintenance issue, you can open the Frontdoor app. The app will start by asking you some questions about the issue in your home. These questions help narrow down where the problem is.
Once you have answered these questions, the app provides a list of preapproved local home repair experts in areas such as plumbing, electrical and appliance repair — plus heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and general handyman skills. This way, you don’t have to go through the hassle of searching for a licensed repairer.
Upon selecting a pro to connect with, you can use the app's live video chat feature. The specialist can help you fix the problem on the spot, figure out what parts you need or determine whether you should take further action. After your video call, the expert will send you a summary of the issue, along with a list of the parts you may need and local pros who can help in person if needed.
Users can also access a library of how-to guides, along with an array of discounts on products and services such as HVAC units, smart home products, security systems, lawn care and cleaning products.
The Frontdoor app is owned by Frontdoor, a publicly traded company that also offers Frontdoor Pro (formerly ProConnect), a web-based platform that connects users with local home service professionals. Unlike the Frontdoor app, however, this platform does not provide video consultations or product discounts. Additionally, Frontdoor is the parent company of home warranty provider American Home Shield.

Still have questions?
Is Frontdoor worth it?
The Frontdoor app can make home repair and maintenance expert consultations more accessible. If you’re reasonably handy and tech-savvy, its expert consultation service could help you avoid calling in a professional when you encounter minor home repairs or maintenance needs.
At the time of publishing, the number of customer reviews on ConsumerAffairs is limited. That said, it’s worth noting that the vast majority are negative. Reviewers who booked in-person services often cite service providers failing to honor the appointment window or making last-minute cancellation or rescheduling requests. Some also complain about a lack of professionalism that could indicate insufficient vetting.
However, ConsumerAffairs reviewers who used the app’s video chat function tended to review it positively, so the app may be worth it if you expect to primarily use this function.
