Consumers are losing trust in food safety, survey shows

Increasing food recalls may be eroding confidence

      • Only 55% of Americans say they are very or somewhat confident in the safety of the U.S. food supply in 2025 — a sharp decline from 62% in 2024 and 70% in 2023.

      • Just 11% of respondents now report being very confident in food safety — down from 24% in 2022, 17% in 2023, and 14% in 2024.

      • Foodborne illness (from bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria) is the top safety concern for consumers, with 50% naming it among their top three. Concerns also highlight that many believe profit is being prioritized over safety, and that not all parts of the food system coordinate adequately to ensure safety.

Food recalls have proliferated in recent months and that may be shaping how consumers view the food supply. The International Food Information Council’s (IFIC) 2025 Food & Health Survey reveals a growing erosion of consumer trust in the safety of the U.S. food system, along with evolving patterns in how Americans view dietary guidance.

The recent survey of 3,000 U.S. adults aged 18 to 80 tracked perceptions, behaviors, and attitudes toward food, nutrition, ingredients, and safety.

Confidence in food safety has dropped to historic lows. Only 55% of Americans now say they feel very or somewhat confident in the safety of the U.S. food supply — falling from 62% just a year earlier.

The “very confident” group has shrunk markedly: just 11% in 2025, compared to 24% in 2022. This decline spans nearly all demographics — age, income, education, and region.

      What worries consumers

      • Foodborne illness tops the list of concerns. Half of respondents placed it among their top three food-safety worries.

      • Many believe there's an imbalance in priorities: 59% think the system puts profit ahead of safety; 54% believe that not all sectors of the food system coordinate properly to protect consumers.

Amid these safety concerns, the survey also looked closely at how well Americans understand dietary guidance and labeling, and how that is shifting. Key insights include:

      • Familiarity with the MyPlate graphic is at a high: 77% of Americans say they have seen it (versus about 61% in its early years).

      • Nutrition literacy (measured via a short quiz about dietary guidance) remains variable, with many still unsure of specific recommendations or how to interpret food labels.

      Implications

The IFIC’s findings suggest that as Americans become less sure about the safety of food supply chains, there is also increasing demand for clearer, more trustworthy communication, better coordination of food safety oversight, and labeling practices that foster understanding rather than confusion.

The survey concludes that this may call for:

      • Better regulatory oversight and transparency across all levels of the food system

      • Enhanced labeling standards to provide clearer, more actionable guidance

      • Greater public education around what constitutes safe, healthy food — especially when it comes to interpreting labels and understanding risk

Only 55% of Americans say they are very or somewhat confident in the safety of the U.S. food supply in 2025 — a sharp decline from 62% in 2024 and 70% in 2...

Costco recalls ‘dangerous’ bottles of sparkling wine

Consumers are advised to dispose of them immediately

      • Recall Notice: Costco recalled Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene due to a risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not in use.

      • Consumer Guidance: Customers are told not to return bottles but to safely dispose of them by wrapping in paper towels, sealing in a plastic bag, and placing in the trash.

      • Refund and Support: Affected buyers can get a full refund by showing Costco’s recall letter in-store, and questions can be directed to importer Ethica Wines at (786) 810-7132.

Costco has issued a recall for one of its products that it says is so dangerous it should not be returned to the store. Instead, it should be disposed of immediately.

Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene, an in-house private label wine is very popular with Costco members for its quality and price. But the company has notified Costco members that there is a serious problem.

“There is a risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not in use,” the company said.

The bottles were sold between April 25 and August 26 this year in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

“If you have an unopened bottle, do not open it,” the company advised. “Dispose of the bottle immediately – do not return it – by wrapping the unopened bottle in paper towels and placing it in a plastic bag before placing it in the garbage to avoid risk from shattering glass.”

Customers who received the letter from Costco are entitled to a full refund by showing the letter at a Costco store.

Costco said consumers who have questions may contract Ethica Wines, an importer Costco works with to make Kirkland brand wine, at (786) 810-7132 Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm EDT.

U.S. investigates Tesla Model Y door handle failures

The probe could lead to a recall if a serious safety risk is found

      • NHTSA opens probe into 174,000 Tesla Model Y vehicles from 2021 model year
      • Parents report being locked out of cars with children inside, some breaking windows to gain entry

      • Investigation could lead to recall if defect is deemed a safety risk

      Federal safety agency opens probe

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into about 174,000 Tesla Model Y vehicles from the 2021 model year after reports that their electronic door handles can become inoperative.

The probe follows nine complaints involving parents who were unable to open exterior doors after placing children inside the vehicle. In four cases, parents broke windows to regain access.

      Safety risks for children

NHTSA noted that while Tesla vehicles are equipped with manual door releases inside, children may not be able to reach or operate them. The agency said the failures appear linked to insufficient voltage supplied to the electronic locks.

Some repair invoices cited replacement of the low-voltage battery after the incidents, but owners reported no warning signs before the door handles stopped functioning.

      Possible recall ahead

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. NHTSA’s preliminary evaluation is the first step toward a potential recall if regulators determine the malfunction poses an unreasonable safety risk.

The case adds to a series of federal safety investigations involving Tesla vehicles, with regulators focusing on both software and hardware issues as the automaker expands its U.S. fleet.

Ford recalls 1.9 million vehicles worldwide to fix faulty rearview cameras

Defects include inverted, distorted or blank rear camera images

      • Recall covers multiple Ford and Lincoln models built between 2015 and 2019

      • Defects include inverted, distorted or blank rear camera images

      • Automaker has logged 18 accidents linked to the issue but no injuries

      Widespread recall announced

Ford is recalling 1.9 million vehicles globally to fix faulty rearview cameras, the automaker confirmed Tuesday in a filing with U.S. safety regulators. The latest action affects a wide range of 2015 through 2019 Ford and Lincoln models after reports of distorted, inverted or blank images that can compromise visibility.

The recall includes about 1.45 million vehicles in the United States, 122,000 in Canada, and roughly 300,000 in other international markets. Models affected include the Lincoln MKC, Lincoln Navigator, Mustang, Expedition, Edge, Transit, Transit Connect, Econoline, Ranger, and the Super Duty lineup of F-250 through F-550 pickups.

      Accidents linked to faulty cameras

Ford said it has received 44,123 warranty claims worldwide related to the defective rearview cameras and identified 18 accidents tied to the issue. No injuries have been reported. Dealers will inspect and replace the cameras as part of the recall.

The problem is the latest in a string of rear-camera defects Ford has faced in recent years. In April, the company recalled 160,000 vehicles from the 2015 model year over camera failures.

      Regulatory scrutiny and penalties

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating Ford’s handling of camera-related recalls since 2021, when the agency launched a probe into whether the company acted quickly enough. Ford has already expanded earlier recalls in 2022 and again in March 2024.

Last November, Ford agreed to pay a $165 million civil penalty after NHTSA determined the company failed to recall vehicles with camera defects in a timely manner.

      Broader industry impact

The safety agency also announced that Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International is recalling more than 250,000 rearview cameras installed in select Ford and Stellantis vehicles.

Models included in Ford’s rearview camera recall (2015–2019)

      • Ford Mustang

      • Ford Expedition

      • Ford Edge

      • Ford Transit

      • Ford Transit Connect

      • Ford Econoline

      • Ford Ranger

Multi-state Salmonella outbreak linked to subscription meals

Metabolic Meals has issued a recall of the popular products

      • Multi-state outbreak: A Salmonella outbreak has been linked to ready-to-eat meals from Metabolic Meals, a meal delivery service.

      • Dozens sickened: Health officials have reported multiple confirmed cases across several states, with more investigations underway.

      • Company response: Metabolic Meals has issued a voluntary recall and is cooperating with health authorities.

A multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections has been traced to meals distributed by Metabolic Meals, a popular subscription-based meal delivery service. Health officials confirmed that dozens of people across several states have fallen ill after consuming certain ready-to-eat products, raising concerns about food safety in the booming meal delivery industry.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that they are investigating clusters of gastrointestinal illness linked to specific Metabolic Meals products shipped in late August. As of this week, more than 30 cases of Salmonella infection have been confirmed in at least five states, with additional reports under review. Several people required hospitalization, though no deaths have been reported.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. While most people recover without treatment, the illness can be severe, especially for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

      Company response

Metabolic Meals, which delivers pre-made meals nationwide, has issued a voluntary recall of select products distributed between August 20 and September 5. Customers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for affected items and either dispose of them or return them for a full refund.

In a statement, the company said it is “working closely with federal and state health officials to determine the source of the contamination and to ensure the safety of all products going forward.” The company has also temporarily suspended operations at one of its production facilities while the investigation continues.

      What to do

Health experts at the CDC are urging anyone who has consumed Metabolic Meals and developed symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, or abdominal pain to seek medical attention. Consumers are also advised to practice safe food handling, including keeping ready-to-eat meals refrigerated at proper temperatures and washing hands thoroughly before and after eating.

The CDC is expected to release further updates as additional test results become available. In the meantime, consumers can find a full list of recalled products on the FDA’s official website.

URMYWO baby lounger recall: suffocation and fall hazard affects tens of thousands

Parents should stop using URMYWO “grey feather” loungers sold on Amazon and request a refund due to safety violations.

      • Violates infant sleep product standards, posing suffocation and fall risks

      • About 23,000 loungers sold January 2024–April 2025 recalled

      • Consumers should stop use and contact Pomona for a refund

PRODUCT IMAGE: URMYWO Baby Lounger “Grey Feather”

URMYWO baby loungers in the “grey feather” style have been recalled after failing to meet mandatory infant sleep product safety standards. The loungers have side walls that are too short and a sleeping pad that is too thick, creating a suffocation risk. Infants may also fall or become entrapped due to an opening at the foot of the lounger. About 23,000 units were sold on Amazon between January 2024 and April 2025.

No injuries have been reported. The loungers were priced between $30 and $50.

      The hazard

The product violates federal standards for infant sleep products. Short side walls, an overly thick pad and an opening at the foot of the lounger pose risks of suffocation, entrapment and falls.

      What to do

Consumers should immediately stop using the URMYWO baby loungers and contact Pomona for a refund.

      Company contact

Contact Pomona by email at urmyworecall@outlook.com for refund instructions.
