Sausage products recalled for undeclared allergen

The products contain soy, which is not listed as an ingredient on the label

UP Products, doing business as Meyer Wholesale, is recalling approximately 400 pounds of sausage products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service says the products contain soy, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product labels.

The ready-to-eat pork and beef Polish sausage and raw pork and beef potato sausage items were produced on various dates from October 30, 2024, through January 7, 2025. The following products are subject to recall:

    • 5" x 8" vacuum-sealed packages containing “Otto Meyer's Premium Sausage POLISH SAUSAGE” with lot codes 24304, 24318, 24326, 24346 on a sticker.

    • Bulk packed in 12" x 24" clear bags containing “Otto Meyer's Premium Sausage POTATO SAUSAGE” with dates 1/6/25, and 1/7/25 handwritten on the label.

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. M1733” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to a restaurant and retail locations in Michigan, and a retail location in Wisconsin.

The problem was discovered during routine FSIS in-plant verification activities when FSIS personnel observed that soy, a known allergen, was being used as an ingredient and was not declared on the finished product label.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

    What to do

FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumer's, retailers’ and restaurants' refrigerators or freezers. Restaurants, retailers and consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to serve, sell, or consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution lists will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

Consumers and members of the media with questions about the recall can contact UP Products Main Office at 906-813-1300.

Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or send a question via email to MPHotline@usda.gov. Watchdog report finds FDA lags in food inspection duties

The agency fails to inspect its quota of high-risk food facilities on time

The U.S. food supply is generally considered safe, but tens of millions of people get sick from foodborne illnesses each year. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has issued a report examining the reasons for the apparent safety gap.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for ensuring the safety of nearly 80% of the nation's food supply. But the GAO report showed that the FDA has struggled to meet its inspection targets for both domestic and foreign food facilities.

Since 2018, it has failed to meet these targets, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The FDA conducts inspections to prevent foodborne illnesses, but the report revealed that they have not been able to inspect all high-risk facilities on time, and foreign facility inspections were well below the mandated targets. The FDA attributed these issues to a lack of staffing and unrealistic goals for foreign facility inspections.

In its report, the GAO found that the FDA has not set clear targets for foreign inspections and recommended the agency develop better processes and performance measures to ensure efficient use of resources.

They also suggested that the FDA improve its recruitment and retention of investigators and take steps to reduce missed inspections. The GAO is urging Congress to help by adjusting the inspection targets to better match resources.

      Recommendations

GAO is recommending that Congress consider directing FDA to determine the annual number of foreign food facility inspections needed to ensure the safety of imported food and communicate this information to Congress. Once received, Congress should consider updating FDA’s foreign inspection annual target.

Also, GAO is making three recommendations to FDA. GAO recommends that FDA

      (1) determine the appropriate size and workload of its foreign investigator cadre

      (2) identify and implement additional procedures to minimize incidences of attempted inspections of domestic food facilities, and

      (3) develop and implement a formal performance management process focused on its food safety inspection efforts. FDA concurred with the recommendations.
