More about Home Electronics ...

Home electronics gear is certainly plentiful and it's relatively cheap, compared to the price of the high-end stuff sought by truly obsessed enthusiasts. But when sophisticated gear becomes inexpensive through mass production, there's a hidden cost -- the price of repair can easily equal or exceed the purchase price. That means that in just a year or two, that big-screen TV or DVD player can wind being just another piece of household debris bound for the nearest landfill.

Some people -- notably, salespeople -- will tell you an extended warranty is the answer. But is it really? Our Mark Huffman doesn't think so. Here's why.

Looking for service? Isn't everyone? Unfortunately, it's no longer easy to find. Here's why.
