Jergens moisturizer recalled over possible bacterial infection

The company will replace any of the affected items at no cost to the consumer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that certain types of Jergens moisturizers are being recalled due to possible bacterial contamination. The agency says anyone who uses Jergens should check specifically for 3-ounce or 10-ounce containers of Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer.

Officials say the products may be contaminated with pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria, which typically poses little medical risk to healthy people but has shown to pose problems to people with weakened immune systems who may be more susceptible to infections.

Further investigation to determine the scope of the issue is still ongoing, but Kao USA has issued a voluntary recall to remove affected products from warehouses. It is also working with retailers to ensure the product is removed from store shelves.

What Jergens users should look for

In the meantime, Kao USA is urging consumers to stop using any of the following Jergens products:

      • Affected lot codes for the 3-ounce size (UPC 019100109971 for single bottles and 019100267114 for pack of 3) include: ZU712851, ZU712871, ZU712911, ZU722881, ZU712861, ZU712881, and ZU722851.

      • Affected lot codes for the 10-ounce size (UPC 019100109988) include: ZU722741, ZU722781, ZU732791, ZU732811, ZU722771, ZU732781, ZU732801 and ZU732821.

Kao USA – which has a “satisfaction guarantee” in place for all its products – says anyone who has a product from a recalled lot should call its Consumer Care Center at 1-800-742-8798 for a free product coupon. Consumers can also email the company at consumer@kao.com. A postage-paid label and plastic bag will be sent to consumers via mail to easily return the product.

The FDA also asks anyone who’s experiencing a reaction to the Jergens moisturizer to contact the agency online or by phone at 888-463-6332.

The product lacks the mandatory cautionary label for products containing methanol

Prestone Products Corporation of Torrance, Calif., is recalling about 325 bottles of Shop Pro RV & Marine Antifreeze.

Bottles labeled as Shop Pro RV & Marine Antifreeze were improperly filled with a product containing methanol. Also, the directions on the bottle for properly flushing a potable water system can fail to adequately remove the methanol, presenting a risk of ingestion.

Products containing methanol pose a poisoning hazard through inhalation or if ingested. No incidents or injuries are reported

The recall involves Shop Pro RV & Marine Antifreeze products manufactured by Prestone for AutoZone. Only bottles filled with blue fluid in one-gallon, clear bottles with date code FT21281 on the bottom of the bottle below the back label are included in the recall. “Shop Pro RV & Marine Antifreeze” is printed on the front of the bottles.

If your bottle is filled with pink liquid, it is properly labeled and can be used.

The antifreeze, manufactured in the U.S. was sold at AutoZone stores nationwide during October 2021, for about $6.

      What to do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled antifreeze and contact Prestone for a full refund and instructions on how to properly dispose of the product.

Consumers who have already used the mislabeled product in any potable water system should not drink water from the system and should immediately contact Prestone Products for instructions on how to properly flush their water system.
