Recall Roundup: Fisher-Price recalls infant rocker products after four infant deaths

A pet food company is recalling four brand-name products over salmonella concerns

It’s important to hold consumer products to high safety standards to protect the public, and that’s doubly true for products that are meant for young children and infants. Unfortunately, some dangerous products can sometimes make it to market and cause real damage.

That appears to be the case with infant rocker products made by Fisher-Price. The company announced that it is recalling 175,000 of its 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soothers and 2-in-1 Soothe ‘n Play Gliders following the deaths of four infants in three states. The infants were reportedly placed on their backs in the Rock ‘n Glide Soother product without restraints, and they were found later on their stomachs after suffocating.

The two products were sold at juvenile product stores and mass merchandisers across the U.S. and online going back as far as 2014. Consumers who own one of the affected products are being advised to stop using them immediately and to contact Fisher-Price for a full refund.

Four dog food brands recalled over salmonella concerns

Sunshine Mills, Inc. is recalling four of its pet food products because they may have been contaminated with salmonella. The products include various sizes and lots of Sportsman’s Pride Professional Formula 30/20 Dog Food, Sprout Sporting Dog Food, Intimidator Chicken & Rice Formula Dog Food 30/20, and FRM Gold Select High Performance Dog Food.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that salmonella in pet food can be dangerous to both the pets who consume it and to humans who prepare it, especially if they do not thoroughly wash their hands and any touched surfaces after handling it. Salmonella contamination can lead to serious symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, it can lead to more serious conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, and urinary tract symptoms, among others.

Consumers who have purchased one of the recalled products are being asked to stop feeding it to their pets and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Tesla seat and brake issues lead to Model 3 and Model Y recalls

Tesla issued several recalls over the last week because of separate issues with some vehicles’ seats and brakes.

In one recall covering over 5,500 Model 3 and Model Y cars, the automaker said there was a problem with the fasteners that secure the front seat shoulder belt to the b-pillar. Another recall affecting 2,000+ Model Y vehicles addressed an issue with the second-row seat belt retractors not being properly attached.

Finally, Tesla said that just under 6,000 of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles also had loose brake caliper bolts that could result in a loss of tire pressure. Consumers who have questions about that problem can call the company’s customer service line at 1-8777-798-3752 and reference recall number SB-21-33-002 for more information.

Smoked fish recalled because of listeria contamination

Brooklyn-based Banner Smoked Fish, Inc. is recalling all of its smoked fish products because they may have been contaminated with listeria bacteria after being processed in unsanitary conditions. The discovery is serious because listeria can sometimes lead to fatal infections in young children and those with compromised immune systems.

The smoked fish products were distributed online in 17 states. In total, the recall affects 42 products that are listed on the FDA’s site here. Consumers who purchased one of the products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Tesla recalls Model Y and Model 3 over seat and brake issues

The company said assembly-line workers may have mistakenly loosened bolts

After discovering two potential safety problems, Tesla has issued two separate recalls.

One recall covers 5,530 vehicles, comprising 2018-2020 Model 3 and 2019-2021 Model Y cars. The automaker said fasteners that secure the front seat shoulder belt to the b-pillar may not be properly attached.

The other recall covers 2,166 Model Y vehicles from 2019-2021. That recall was issued because fasteners that secure the left and right second-row seat belt retractors may not be properly attached.

In a filing with the National Traffic Safety Administration, the electric car maker said assembly-line workers may have erroneously loosened properly secured bolts after attaching them.

The company isn’t currently aware of any accidents or injuries connected to either of the defects. However, the company said that in “very rare circumstances” a loose or separated fastener could cause problems.

“If a fastener becomes loose enough or separates from the knuckle such that the caliper makes contact with the inner surface of the wheel rim, the wheel may be prevented from freely rotating, which may cause loss of tire pressure and may increase the risk of a crash,” the automaker said in the filing.

      Servicing affected vehicles

Tesla said it will inspect owners’ fasteners to ensure that they are secured properly. If they aren’t, the company will replace them at no charge.

“In the unlikely event that damage to the b-pillar hole threads and/or top loop is found during the inspection, Tesla Service will repair the hole threads and/or replace the top loop," the company added.

Tesla has now issued a total of three recalls this week. On Wednesday, Reuters reported that Tesla was recalling 5,974 U.S. 2019-2021 Model 3 vehicles and 2020-2021 Model Y vehicles. The company told the NHTSA that some vehicles’ brake caliper bolts could be loose, which could cause a loss of tire pressure. Tesla’s biggest recall to date has covered Model S and Model X vehicles with touchscreen issues.
