Full-service installations start at $1.61 per watt. Do-it-yourself projects are cheaper, starting at $1.26 per watt.

      • “Project Solar was willing to do all the paperwork but allow me to do the installation. I like that it was no pressure. All the other companies we talked to would call us almost nonstop. … They explained everything. Whenever I had a question, they would answer it. They were very responsive. They had a project manager who was always available. He not only made sure I had the things I needed, but also if I had a question, he would walk me through. I paid $20,000 more or less for everything. That's including the cost of my own install and the electrician that came out that wasn't part of Project Solar. Then I got a six-plus-thousand-dollar refund from taxes. The entire system, over 10-kilowatt, is $14,000 which is great. I have yet to talk to anybody who has even come close to that price. So far, I'm very satisfied. The system is still working perfectly and it's paying for all of our electricity.” — Dion in North Las Vegas

Solar panel costs in Las Vegas

With professional installation, solar panel systems in Nevada cost anywhere from $7,700 to $22,000.

In Las Vegas, a typical 7-kilowatt system costs $17,248 before the federal solar investment tax credit (ITC). That price drops to $12,073 after using the full ITC.

The size of your solar panel system is a big factor in your total cost. The average Nevada household needs a system with a capacity of 9.44 kW to fully offset their electricity costs. You might need a smaller or larger system, depending on your household energy use.

Is solar worth it in Las Vegas?

Solar panels are generally worth it in Nevada if you like the idea of lowering your monthly utility bills. The main drawback is the high upfront cost of purchasing and installing the panels and equipment.

Homeowners with solar panels typically save $20,000 to $90,000 over 25 years.

We’ve talked to hundreds of Nevadans who have already gone through the solar panel installation process. With rising electricity costs, many find it’s financially worth it in the long run.

One resident, William in Las Vegas, decided to go solar after watching his electric bill increase from $40 to $240. “At that point, I'd much rather be paying for some solar panels than straight up paying this electricity bill,” he told us. “My bill is only 10 to 15 bucks and I'm gladly taking that.” Despite some annoying paperwork and dealing with his HOA, it “was all worth it in the end,” William said.

Lots of sunlight makes Nevada an overall excellent state for solar panels. Nevada averages 6 to 7.5 peak sun hours each day. But it doesn’t work out for everyone. Lots of shading — like trees or tall buildings above your roof — could make your solar system less efficient.

We suggest using NREL’s PVWatts Calculator to estimate how much electricity a solar panel can produce over a year on your house. Project Sunroof is another free solar savings estimator.

Assuming an upfront purchase, it takes about 8 years to break even (when your savings with solar panels make up for the cost). On average, Nevada homeowners with solar panels can avoid $41,459 in total utility costs over 25 years.

How can I pay for solar panels?

Getting solar panels is like buying a car. You could pay cash, but many people finance through a loan. Similarly, leasing solar equipment could be a good option if you don’t want to take on debt or be responsible for system maintenance.

      • Solar loan: Solar loans work like any other type of loan. They have relatively low fixed interest rates. Once you pay it off, you own your system outright.
      • Solar lease: You get to use the panels but don’t own them. Solar leases can be good if you have limited savings. Agreements typically last 20 to 25 years.
      • Power purchase agreement: You buy the power generated by the panels on a per-kilowatt-hour (kWh) basis. It’s typically a fixed price, with a cheaper cents/kWh rate than traditional utilities have for the same amount of electricity.
      • Home equity loans or lines of credit (HELOC): Eligible homeowners can borrow against equity in their house to finance a solar panel system. These often have variable interest rates, meaning monthly payments can increase over time.

      Going solar in Clark County

Nevada is a pro-solar state in terms of both regulations and economics. Consumer protection officials in Nevada are taking steps to protect customers who purchase residential rooftop solar systems against unscrupulous sales pitches, and a statewide nonprofit has applied for up to $250 million in federal Solar For All funding.

      Solar incentives in Las Vegas

NV Energy, which serves most of Las Vegas, offers various resources and programs to support homeowners adopting solar energy. Nevadans in Sin City can also take advantage of statewide portfolio energy credits and net billing to help justify the upfront costs of going solar.

The Nevada Energy Portfolio Standard lets residents with renewable energy systems earn portfolio credits, which may be sold to utility companies. Residents with systems installed are compensated at a rate of 1 portfolio credit per kilowatt-hour generated. However, systems obtained through Nevada Energy’s Renewable Generations rebate are not eligible.

» MORE: Solar incentives in Nevada

      Federal tax credit

The federal solar investment tax credit (ITC) is still the best financial incentive for many homeowners in Las Vegas. It reduces your federal tax liability by 30% of how much it costs to install solar panels.

The ITC drops to 26% in 2033 and then 22% in 2034.

The ITC is a credit, meaning it directly decreases the amount of taxes you owe. Please don’t get confused. This is different from a deduction, which lowers your taxable income.

For example, if you spend $10,000 installing a solar panel system, the ITC is worth $3,000. If, in the year your system becomes operational, you owe $15,000 in taxes, the ITC reduces what you owe to $12,000.

What to know about net metering in Las Vegas

Net metering allows you to draw power from the grid when your solar panels aren’t producing enough, and in return, you can send excess energy back to the grid for credit on future electricity bills.

Even though the state has gone back and forth on net metering rates over the last decade or so, the program is still worth it for many residents. Residents who choose to participate in net metering in Nevada are currently compensated at 75% of the retail rate. This rate will not change unless modified by legislation.

How to find a reputable solar company in Las Vegas

In our experience, the best solar companies in Nevada have a few things in common: lots of experience, reliable equipment and transparent contracts. Here are some hiring tips.

      • Check certifications: You can verify a solar contractor’s license number through the Nevada State Contractors Board’s online database. The Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) has a National Solar Licensing Database that lists the latest licensing, certification and other requirements impacting the solar industry. We also recommend choosing an installer certified through the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).
      • Read reviews: Research the company's track record and read reviews. Look out for red flags — complaints about misleading sales tactics, equipment failures, billing issues and lack of communication are common themes in negative solar company reviews. Companies with plenty of experience installing solar panels in Las Vegas are better at navigating the local regulations, permits and available financial incentives.
      • Ask questions: Do you need a solar storage battery, electric vehicle (EV) charger or critter guards? How does this affect overall pricing? What if your system needs maintenance in a year or two? If you don’t understand something about the payment terms, warranty or ongoing services, ask for clarification.

      Las Vegas solar FAQ

What solar scams are common in Las Vegas?

One of the most common solar scams involves fake companies that panel systems without any intention of really installing them. The other one is falsely claiming to be affiliated with state agencies. On the bright side, Nevada has strong consumer protections for homeowners looking to have solar panels installed.

PUNC has a helpful factsheet for residents going solar in the state. Contact the Nevada State Contractors Board if you suspect a solar scam.

Is my HOA allowed to restrict solar panels?

No. Homeowners associations in the state of Nevada are not permitted to unduly restrict solar panels.

Is my house a good candidate for solar?

As long as your house is a good candidate for solar, it’s at least worth considering. Here are some questions to ask yourself.

      • What is the size and angle of my roof? Las Vegas (and the rest of the United States) is in the Northern Hemisphere, so solar panels perform best on south-facing roofs. The worst place to install would be on north-facing roofs, especially if those roofs have a high pitch. For example, if the only place you can install is a north-facing roof with a 30-degree pitch, your costs will likely go up by 30% to 40%.
      • How old are my appliances? Getting your electrical loads as small as possible before going solar means you’ll need a smaller system, which will be cheaper overall. If you have older electrical appliances, upgrade those before investing in solar panels.
      • What is the condition of my roof? If you have to replace your roof, do that before you install solar panels. Solar panels are designed to last up to 30 years, so you want your roof to last just as long. Otherwise, it could cost thousands to remove the panels, fix your roof and reinstall the panels again.
Can I get solar panels for free in Las Vegas?

We’re not aware of a totally free solar option in Las Vegas. However, you can lease or enter a power purchase agreement with little to no upfront costs. In either agreement, there is usually a low ongoing monthly fee. In general, beware of deals that sound too good to be true.

What are the different types of solar panels?

Monocrystalline and polycrystalline are the most common types of solar panels used in residential installations. In general, monocrystalline panels are considered the best bang for your buck. Cheaper solar panels are typically polycrystalline. The key difference is in materials and efficiency: Monocrystalline panels use pure, single silicon crystals, while polycrystalline panels are made from melted silicon fragments, resulting in different efficiency levels.

Solar panel efficiency is a measure of how well a panel makes electricity. Standard efficiency rates range from 19% to 23%, which means 19% to 23% of the sunlight that hits the panels gets converted into electricity. The more efficient the solar panels you buy are, the fewer panels you need. While more efficient panels cost a little more, you save by buying fewer panels.

Methodology: How we chose the best solar companies in Las Vegas

The ConsumerAffairs Research Team used a research-backed, data-driven approach, which was informed by our expert editors, to choose the best solar companies. For this guide, we objectively weighted several key features to get our final rankings:

      Reviews, ratings and testimonials: 40%
We analyzed solar company reviews by verified solar customers to gauge real-world satisfaction. Companies with generally positive feedback on our site scored highest in this aspect. Those with the most 4- and 5-star reviews by verified Las Vegas customers were given preference.

      Warranties: 20%
A long warranty is important — it shows that a company stands behind its products and services. We compared companies on both equipment and craftsmanship warranty terms. All of our top picks for professional installation have warranties or production guarantees of at least 10 to 25 years.

      Equipment selection: 20%
We evaluated each company’s selection of solar panels, storage batteries and inverters. Those with proprietary technology or a wide equipment selection from trusted brands ranked highest.

      Financing and payment options: 20%
We gave preference to companies that offer multiple payment and financing options for transparent terms and conditions.

Our goal is to highlight solar companies that are best equipped to meet most Las Vegas residents’ energy needs. The team regularly evaluates customer reviews, company information and industry trends to update our top picks:

      1. Sunrun
      2. Project Solar
      3. Elevation
