We’ve heard from over 200 Freedom Solar Power customers. Over a recent two-year period, 92% were satisfied with the installation and setup, 94% were pleased with the price and 85% were happy with the customer service. People tell us about quick installations, and many say the app is helpful for tracking energy production post-installation.

      Pros

      • Excellent customer service
      • 24/7 performance monitoring
      • Transferable warranty
      • In-house, NABCEP-certified installers

      Cons

      • Somewhat limited availability
      • No in-house financing
      • “Working with Freedom Solar Power was very smooth and direct, and there was easy communication. … The production has been better than what they anticipated. I've been able to overproduce more than I was expecting to. It's definitely worth it. Even though they're not the cheapest out there, as long as somebody understands the value of what you put into something, it's gonna be beneficial.” — Brandon in Camden
      • “Freedom Solar appeared to have the best quality materials and warranty. One of the most important things for me was that they warrantied everything and I wouldn't have to go to different places to get different things fixed. All I got to do is call them and they take responsibility for the entire system. They were very detailed. They spent about an hour and a half walking me through their entire process of what it would look like from beginning to end. They showed me the different number of panels I would need based on the percentage of electrical power to power the house. So they took my electric bills and analyzed them. We looked at what the best return on investment was and decided on the 70-72% range.” — Matthew in Trenton

Matthew said that the biggest challenge “was working with the Tri-County Coop, which was outside of Freedom's control. They just had a lot of extra paperwork. The actual installation was quite easy. The guys came and installed everything in a day, and then the electrician took a few days to get all of the boxes and cutover switches and things installed. But it was pretty smooth.”

It’s also worth noting that Freedom Solar might not be the cheapest option. Still, many customers say it's worth the investment.

Sunrun's leasing program lets you go solar without a huge upfront investment. There’s no initial charge for any panels or other equipment, installation or permits. Sunrun owns the system, and you pay a fixed monthly fee to use it.

      Pros

      • Reliable systems
      • Flexible payment options
      • Comprehensive warranties
      • Daily system monitoring

      Cons

      • Occasional installation delays
      • Some customer service complaints
      • Occasional billing issues
      • “Sunrun explained everything to me like how it would work if I qualified through the government program. They told me what they would install. They got on the roof and put everything.” — Barbara in Hamilton Township

As with any contract, read the fine print carefully. Some customers have expressed concerns about the terms, particularly if something goes wrong after the installation is complete.

For instance, Rajeev in Union isn’t saving as much as anticipated. “I saved about $200 in 2 years,” they told us. “Not only am I paying 2 bills now, but the system malfunctions all the time.”

“Technically, Sunrun is good,” Julia in Marlboro said. “But overall, the organizational part was horrible. My marketer left after two months of signing the contract. I was left with nobody who could help and I didn't know where to go or whom to speak with.”

Sunrun specializes in residential solar systems with battery storage. Installers use monocrystalline solar photovoltaic (PV) panels from reputable manufacturers like LG.

      • Warranty information: Sunrun provides a 10-year warranty on workmanship and equipment, roof leak protection and a 25-year performance guarantee.

      • “The sales rep was friendly. The installation was quick and it was a one-time thing. The electrician messed up on something, though. The wiring for the consumption and production meters was hooked up backwards or something. So, they're coming out next week to fix it.” — Brandon in Trenton

Reviewers in other states sometimes mention communication issues or installation delays. These types of complaints are common in the industry. Solar installations are complicated projects — there’s always a chance that projected timelines change due to weather, supply chain issues and other factors. We also think ION Solar could be a little more transparent about its financing options and additional services provided.

ION Solar’s NABCEP-certified installers use Silfab solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and Enphase microinverters. Most projects are completed in 60 to 90 days.

      • Energy services: Reps coordinate solar system designs and installations as well as roofing services if needed. Production monitoring and ongoing system maintenance are available after the installation is complete.
      • Warranty information: All work performed during the installation is covered for 10 years. Panels are guaranteed to produce at least 85% capacity for 30 years. Enphase microinverters come with a 25-year warranty.
      • Payment options: You can purchase or finance the system through a solar loan. Rates and terms vary.

      Solar panel costs in Trenton

A typical solar panel installation costs anywhere from $9,450 to $27,000 in New Jersey. Prices in Trenton are comparable, ranging from $9,485 to $27,100. On the high end, Ryan in Voorhees took out a $35,000 loan to go solar.

System size is a major solar cost factor. It also depends on if you want an energy storage battery, which sometimes costs as much as the panels: $7,000 to $18,000. A battery lets you store excess energy generated during the day and use it when your panels aren’t producing, like at night or during outages. It’s worth considering if your area gets frequent blackouts or if you don’t opt into Trenton’s net metering program.

How can I pay for solar panels?

Getting solar panels is like buying a car. Most people pay cash, finance or lease. Similar to leasing, a power purchase agreement (PPA) lets you get the benefits of solar without actually owning the equipment.

      • Solar loans work like any other type of loan. They have relatively low fixed interest rates. Once you pay it off, you own your system outright.
      • Solar leases are a good option if you have limited savings and don’t want to take on debt. A potential downside to leasing is that you won’t be eligible for the federal solar tax credit.
      • Power purchase agreements are when a third party installs and maintains solar panels on your property. You buy the power generated by the panels on a per kilowatt-hour (kWh) basis. It’s typically a fixed price, with a cheaper cents/kWh rate than traditional utilities have for the same amount of electricity.

» SOLAR PANELS: Buy vs. lease

Is solar worth it in Trenton?

Solar panels are generally worth it in New Jersey if you like the idea of lowering your monthly utility bills. On average, Trenton homeowners with solar panels can avoid $60,218 in total utility costs over 25 years.

One resident, Eric in Jackson, told us their utility only charges about $30 to $70 each February, “and that’s it. I love solar. Saving me so much money.”

The main drawback is the high upfront cost of purchasing and installing the panels and equipment. Assuming an upfront purchase, it takes about 4 years to break even (when your savings with solar panels make up for the cost).

Considering New Jersey averages 3.5 to 4 peak sun hours each day, switching to solar is also worth considering for the environmental benefits. We suggest using NREL’s PVWatts Calculator to estimate how much electricity a solar panel can produce over a year on your house. Project Sunroof is a reliable online solar savings estimator.

      Potential roof problems

As a rule of thumb, if your roof is more than 10 years old, consider fixing it before going solar. Installing solar panels on an old roof might mean you have to remove the panels, replace your roof and then reinstall the panels again. Velissa in Willingboro said it cost $8,600 to remove and replace shingles. Sounds like an expensive and frustrating process — avoid it if you can.

How to find a reputable solar company in Trenton

In our experience, the best solar companies in New Jersey have a few things in common: lots of experience, reliable equipment and transparent contracts. Here are some hiring tips.

      • Check certifications: The New Jersey Division of Property Management and Construction has a contractor search tool to help you verify a potential installer’s credentials. We also recommend choosing an installer certified through the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).
      • Read reviews: Avoid companies with recurring complaints about misleading sales tactics, equipment failures, billing issues and lack of communication.
      • Compare costs: Get multiple solar quotes from different companies to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
      • Ask questions: Do you need a solar storage battery, electric vehicle (EV) charger or critter guards? How does this affect overall pricing? What if your system needs maintenance? If you don’t understand something about the payment terms, warranty or ongoing services, ask for clarification.

      Going solar in Mercer County

Scammers sometimes pretend to be associated with the government or local utility. The State of NJ nor the Board of Public Utilities offer a completely free solar panel installation program, according to the New Jersey Clean Energy Program.

Residential solar panel incentives in Trenton

The 30% federal solar investment tax credit (ITC) is the best incentive for most Trenton homeowners. It reduces your federal tax liability by 30% of how much it costs to install solar panels. Don’t get confused: The ITC is a credit, meaning it directly decreases the amount of taxes you owe. This is different from a deduction, which lowers your taxable income.

The ITC drops to 26% in 2033 and 22% in 2034.

You can combine the ITC with local solar incentives in New Jersey to maximize savings.

For instance, the Successor Solar Incentive (SuSI) program is a performance-based incentive that pays for energy production over time. There’s a sales tax exemption, which saves about 7% on the equipment. Plus, a property tax exemption means your property tax bill won’t go up if solar panels increase your home’s market value.

      Trenton solar FAQ

How do I know what size solar system I need?

The average Trenton household needs a system with a capacity of 9.33 kW (kilowatt) to fully offset their electricity costs. Depending on how much energy you and your family use, you might need a smaller or larger one.

How does net metering work in Trenton?

Net metering is a system of give-and-take between you and your utility company. You also earn credits for sending any excess solar energy to the grid. Net metering also lets you access power from the grid when your panels don’t generate enough electricity.

Trenton is primarily serviced by PSEG, which has its own set of rules within the state's framework. Typically, you get credit for excess solar generation at the same rate you pay for electricity. This is a major advantage.

» GREENEST STATES: New Jersey ranked 20th in 2024

Do I need any permits to install solar panels in Trenton?

Yes, solar installations are considered electrical tasks, so there are permitting requirements by the City of Trenton.

What are the different types of solar panels?

Monocrystalline and polycrystalline are the most common types of solar panels used in residential installations. In general, monocrystalline panels are considered the best bang for your buck. Cheaper solar panels are typically polycrystalline. The key difference is in materials and efficiency: Monocrystalline panels use pure, single silicon crystals, while polycrystalline panels are made from melted silicon fragments, resulting in different efficiency levels.

Solar panel efficiency is a measure of how well a panel makes electricity. Standard efficiency rates range from 19% to 23%, which means 19% to 23% of the sunlight that hits the panels gets converted into electricity. The more efficient your solar panels are, the fewer panels you need. While more efficient panels cost a little more, you save by buying fewer panels.
