I first heard about Freedom Solar when I started searching for alternatives to handle the high electric bills in Florida, which have tripled since I moved there in 2020. Given that Florida is such a sunny state, solar energy seemed like the right choice. Out of several companies I considered, Freedom Solar offered the best deal and seemed very reputable.

The sign-up process was relatively good. The representative was upfront and honest, though there were some initial hurdles to overcome. Once those were addressed, everything proceeded quite smoothly.

I've only recently started relying on solar, so I haven't had enough time to see how it impacts my electric bills. There's an app that tracks production, but I haven't yet been able to correlate that data with my bills. I'm waiting for my first complete bill reflecting my solar usage to see the actual savings.

I've already recommended Freedom Solar to others. I evaluated five companies, and Freedom Solar stood out with honest communication and years of experience—about 17 years, which is reassuring in an industry full of transient companies.

As for the product itself, they use solar panels that produce slightly less power than the latest models, which I understand requires extra panels. However, despite the recent hurricane, the panels held up without issue, though it's too soon to speak to their long-term durability.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I'd rate my experience with Freedom Solar a 4, maybe even 4.5. Customer service is about a 4.5, and the product itself I'd rate a 4 due to the slightly older model panels. Pricing deserves a solid 5; the lease agreement I have means my payments stay flat over 30 years, which saves significantly compared to other companies with annual price hikes. Overall, I’ve been very satisfied with Freedom Solar.

      Reviewed Sept. 23, 2024

I did a web search of some solar companies in Dallas, Texas on Reddit, and I saw that Freedom Solar had a really good customer service rating and everyone recommended them. My first interest in solar was, previous to this home, one of my friends had said they got solar and they had loved it because it was helping them cut down the cost and they were locking in their energy rate for years to come. That's what we wanted to do with it.

The signup experience was easy. I went on Freedom Solar's website and they put me in touch with a sales person. The sales person was really good about answering my questions. It wasn't salesy. He was giving me all the information that I needed. When I said I'm gonna look at some other places, he said, “Make sure you ask these questions. These are super important.” He ushered me through the process. My only downside to that whole experience was after the sale, that customer support from the sales person dropped off a little, and it was more or less he had already gotten the sale so he didn't need to help me as much as possible. He still helps a bit here and there, but he wasn't as supportive as it was before the sale. In a way, that could be viewed by other people as skeezy. They're gonna do everything they can before they get the sale, but once they get the sale, it's a situation like, “Okay. Here's the process. Good luck.”

The installation was the best part of the process. It was in and out, and the team was amazing. The guy came to the front door, introduced it, and said, “Hey, I'm sorry. We got here a little early. Is it okay that we start a few minutes early?” I said, “Absolutely!” They were done in just a few hours. The guy came in and told me the next step and shook my hand. That was a really great experience, and everything's been working really well. However, I was a little frustrated because after the sale and the installation, they dropped the ball on the process explanation. I've called and talked to them about this.

I got these generic messages about the portal, and I go on there and I would call. Sometimes, the agents would give me wrong information. It pushed our completion date out a little because we were waiting for something that I needed to do on my own. When I followed up with Garland Power and Light, they said, “Yeah, you need to send an email to this to get it scheduled to permission to operate.” Getting our completion date pushed a bit was a little frustrating to me because we were trying to get it started as soon as possible. However, it was really great and generous that they paid for the first month of our loan because that had got pushed out for completion.

Aside from customer service, I am a little frustrated to this point right now because we signed up with Freedom Solar and went with the SunPower route due to being able to get two rebates. One was $1,500 from Freedom Solar and the other one was $2,500 from SunPower. We were waiting on that from SunPower and I reached out to Freedom Solar to see if they could help me with that. I found out that SunPower is about to go through a bankruptcy, and no one really wants to try to help me to get that. We were expecting to get another $2,500 back in rebates, and we are left out in the dark of what we need to do. It would be very good of a business for them to offer us that rebate because that's the reason we went with that route. Otherwise, we may not even have gotten solar at that point because $2,500, to us, is a deal.

Freedom Solar has always made it right. They've always reached out to me and got back to me if I had a complaint or if I was upset. The installation and the current functioning is amazing. I appreciate that they went out of their way to give me a call back and say, “Hey, we're gonna try to fix that process. We appreciate the feedback.” I would definitely go with them because they seem like they're trusting.

Freedom Solar sent out a salesperson who answered all of our questions and was very transparent and aboveboard. The price that they said it was gonna be was exactly what it was. After we signed the contract, they had to have their guy come out and determine what it would look like. Our roof is not flat and he wanted to check the angles and see if they needed to prop them up. That took about three weeks. Then they came up with the design for it but Core held them up for about a month on the design. Core limits how many panels we can have to how much we use, which they vastly underestimated and we will be getting more panels. Core only allowed us to get nine panels and we need at least 11.

Once Core okayed the design and the installation, Freedom Solar had the panels down here within another two weeks and got all the panels on within less than two weeks. They got all the wiring set up and got the proper labels that Core wanted on the box. It took an extra week because they didn't like Freedom Solar’s labels. Eliminating the delays caused by Core, it took Freedom Solar three months from the start of the contract to getting the panels up on our roof.

Freedom Solar couldn't put the batteries in until they got the clearance. It took us six months to go online because of Core, our electrical company, and to a point where we had to stay in a motel one night because they had insisted that they take us offline so that they could check all the circuits. But they didn't come out to check them. Freedom Solar couldn't turn them back on again without Core saying it was okay to do it. Freedom Solar put us up in a dog-friendly motel, so we could bring our dog with us, and they paid for our dinner.

We would do it again with Freedom Solar. When our house got hit by lightning and all of the panels tripped, we called Freedom Solar and they had it fixed within 15 minutes. I paid the electric bill today and it was $37, which is low. $25 of that is the fee they charge us every month for being attached to the grid. It used to be significantly more because lights, TVs, and radios. I work remotely as well. We also have an EV that we charge. My husband goes in the app all the time and likes looking at it. He's very happy with it. It's like a new toy.

I liked the sales guy who came out and talked to me. He respected my time and the price was right compared to other systems that I could use. Their project managers were good but communication could have been a little bit better with Freedom and their project management. It's just there was one transition where I think one project manager got moved to a different department or a different area. I had to start over with a new project manager. Also, there was more rules and regulations than I thought going into the project of getting my house hooked up with solar. We were going back and forth between the electric company, the county, and Freedom Solar, making sure that everyone was on the same page. But it all got resolved and everything's running great right now. The solar has been active for three to four months now and there's been little bit of cost savings compared to what I was paying.

Freedom Solar does the monitoring and they will notify me if someone needs to come out and make any adjustments to my panels. I also have an application on my phone where I can monitor the performance of the system and I think there is a way that I can individually look at them. They've needed to make adjustments to the system once. It happened not even a month after the install and the permission to go ahead and operate was granted. They were cut on and about three weeks later, I got a phone call from Freedom, saying that they were monitoring the system and one of the panels needed a slight adjustment and that a technician would be out that day. They came out and they didn't even bother me at all. They just got up on the roof, made whatever adjustment that they needed to, and everything was working at its peak performance from there.

I was looking for somebody to put solar panels on my new house and I reached out to the guy who had sold me solar panels on my previous house. He said he's no longer affiliated with that company, but that he would help me find someone that could do it and find the best deal. He found Freedom and explained what they could do and then hooked me up with them. Freedom's customer-service was straightforward. They showed up and asked me what I was looking for, what type of system, and how much I wanted.

I told them I didn't want to store energy. I just wanted to generate some to offset some of the cost of heating and cooling the house. Because it was a new build, we didn't have the history of the electricity to be able to say, "This is how much you're averaging." I just told them to take some houses in the area that are about this many square feet and go off of what they do. Then I explained there are only two people living in this house, so we stay on the low side. They told me how many panels I’d need.

Curiously, I had asked the builder what they were gonna build next to me. I wanted to make sure they didn't put a two-story house because someone's gonna put solar panels. They said they weren't. In the end, they ended up building a two-story house next to me. It reduced the amount of sun that I would get on that side. The panels were gonna be on the street side, so they wouldn't be seen. But they contacted me and said I needed to add two more arrays to the system. They were pretty straightforward. They explained it to me and left it up to me. I said, “Yeah. Go ahead. Add them on.”

As far as the installation, they told me where the crew would be coming to put them on. Then they showed up on time like they had promised. They put the panels all up in one day. The City of New Braunfels is a little bit tough on solar panels and the connections they certify. So, they left it. They said they'd be back as soon as they got approved with the city to put it on the grid. It took about three weeks. Then they showed up and met somebody from utility and got it all tied in and got it ready like they said they would.

I'm very satisfied with solar power. I had already played with the math at the other house. So, we're seeing about what I expected to get in savings against our electric bill. I know it'll only get better because the cost of power will only go up. We were basing it on 5 cents per kilowatt hour. 10 years from now, it'll be more than that. So, I know it'll accelerate my return on investment.

As far as customer service, I don't know what they could do more. I did get the printout of what they were proposing and the layout, and somebody explained it to me. Then after they put it in, I had to follow up where they came to make sure it was running the way it's supposed to. I had the app on my phone and I know how to use that. So, everything was as promised. The guy that I had originally contacted to help me set it up sent me a pie. My financial planner sends me a thing called a Tootie Pie every year for being a customer, and this guy sent me a pie. It was a tongue-in-cheek joke. I thought it was hilarious, but I did appreciate that he reached back to me and asked me, “Were you happy with everything I helped you with?” I said, “Yes.” Overall, I got what I was promised.

Ticket # ** - I'm not able to monitor our system that we purchased through Freedom Solar as was part of the deal. I last talked with Ms S and she was able to see what our system is doing, I informed her that my app is showing 0 kW - solar, 0 kW - home, both power walls are at 100% and drawing 0 kW from the grid. This not knowing what is actually happening on my end has become unacceptable.

If this were a new vehicle I would have already returned it to the dealership. I'm afraid my patience has grown weary trying to resolve this. I get the same response with each call I've made, 02/27/25 Mr M, 02/28/25 Mr M, 03/01/25 left a voice message, 03/04/25 received email from Ms H, 03/07 Ms C and today 03/10/25 Ms S. All messages are the same "looking into it". I've uninstalled the app and reinstalled hoping that would work with no luck. Everyone I have talked to has been extremely polite but unable to give me any definitive answers. As I stated earlier, if it was a new car it would be headed back to the dealer.
