Palmer Candy recalls a variety of products in 17 states

It’s the second candy recall for pathogens within days

There’s yet another candy recall that poses a threat to consumers with a sweet tooth. Palmer Candy Company of Sioux City, Iowa, is recalling its “White Coated Confectionary Items” because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The recalled Confectionary Items were distributed nationwide in retail stores and to wholesale outlets.

The recalled confectionary items were distributed nationwide in Walmart, HyVee, Target, Dollar General, and to distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The product comes in a variety of retail packaging like bags, pouches and tubs.

So far, no illnesses have been reported but health officials want consumers to be aware of the threat.

According to Palmer Candy, the potential contamination lies in the liquid coating. The company was told there was a potential for contamination with salmonella from an ingredient that was potentially contaminated at one of their suppliers.

Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

    What to do

Consumers who have purchased White coated confectionary items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-831-0828 Monday through Friday 8 am – 5 pm.

Planters Peanuts with potentially fatal contamination recalled

The honey roasted peanuts may be contaminated with Listeria

Hormel Foods Sales has announced the recall of two PLANTERS products that were produced at one of its facilities in April. This recall only impacts two retailers in five states.

However, those peanuts may pose a dire threat to consumers in those states who have purchased the products. These products are being recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The products were shipped to Publix distribution warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina and to Dollar Tree distribution warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.

The recalled product is limited to 4 oz. packages of PLANTERS Honey Roasted Peanuts and 8.75 oz. cans of PLANTERS Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts. The “Best if Used By Date” is located on the bottom of the Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts can and the UPC code is located on the side of the can.

Chocolate bars recalled for undeclared hazelnut ingredients

      The products were sold nationwide

Chocoholics with nut allergies beware! Chuao Chocolatier is recalling a single production of Potato Chip mini bar .39oz/11 gram chocolate bars because some packages may contain undeclared hazelnut.

That could be dangerous because people who are sensitive or have allergies to hazelnuts could be at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

This recall is limited to one lot code (4022) of the Chuao Chocolatier Potato Chip mini chocolate bar (.39 oz. bar), which was sold nationwide, excluding Hawaii and Alaska, in retail stores and online. No other Chuao Chocolatier products are affected by this recall.

The item UPC is 872629006615 and the Best By Date is 22 February 2025.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered hazelnuts were inadvertently added to the product during manufacturing and the lot produced was distributed in packaging that does not reveal the presence of hazelnuts. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by cross contamination on a piece of share equipment.

      What to do

Consumers who are sensitive or have allergies to hazelnut should not eat this product and should discard any product they may have.

Consumers should contact the company at (760) 814-6230 or support@chuaochocolatier.com to get more information about the recall.

The customer service line is open 24 hours a day and Consumer Relations specialists are available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST.

      There’s another Ford Maverick recall

This one is to address a taillight issue

Ford is recalling 242,669 2022-2024 Maverick pickup trucks. The Body Control Module (BCM) may inadvertently deactivate one or both rear tail lights.

Tail lights that fail to illuminate can reduce the vehicle's visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

Mavericks have been subject to other recalls so far in 2024. In March, Ford recalled 62,813 Maverick Hybrids because the instrument panel cluster may not properly illuminate warning lights or gauges.

In April, the automaker recalled 456,565 model year 2021-2024 Bronco Sports and model year 2022-2023 Mavericks. The body and power train control modules may fail to detect a change in the 12-volt battery state of charge.

      What to do

For this latest recall, dealers will update the BCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 20, 2024.

Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S24. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Walnuts sold at Whole Foods and other outlets have been recalled

The CDC says the nuts may be contaminated

Gibson Farms has recalled Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts because the company believes they could be contaminated with E. Coli 0157:H7.

The Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts were sold to distributors located in California and Washington and were in turn sold in bulk boxes in Net Wt. 25 lbs quantities and can be identified by lot 3325-043 & 3341-501 with expiration dates 5/21/25 & 6/7/25.

The products were sold at the retail level at Whole Foods and dozens of other local and national retailers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a complete list of the retail locations here.

Gibson Farms said it voluntarily recalled the product after being notified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of 12 recorded illnesses allegedly linked to the consumption of organic halves and pieces of shelled walnuts. A full investigation is currently underway to determine the potential source of the contamination.

      What to do

Retailers that received recalled products and do not clean and sanitize bulk bins between refilling them, should discard the contents of the bin and clean and sanitize it before refilling.

Retailers that received the recalled product from a distributor but do not know the brand or lot code information should hold the product, sanitize bins, and contact suppliers.

Consumers with questions may contact the company at Veronica Cheatham 831-637-3512 or email foodsafety@gibsonfarmsinc.com 8:30 am-4:40 pm PST Monday through Friday.
