The agency has added urgency to the recall

A recall of tainted cinnamon seasoning for lead contamination is still in effect, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updating its warning to consumers.

In March, the FDA reported that Colonna Brothers had issued a recall for its 1.5 oz Marcum Ground Cinnamon and 2.25 oz Supreme Tradition Ground Cinnamon. This week, the FDA reclassified the recall to Class II, meaning the product "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences." The classification is also used "where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

The agency reported the recall on March 9, noting the cinnamon was distributed nationwide through retail stores and mail order. The products come in a clear plastic jar labeled with either “Marcum Cinnamon Ground 1.5 oz” or “Supreme Tradition Ground Cinnamon 2.25 oz”.

What to do

Consumers who have purchased the Supreme Tradition Ground Cinnamon or Marcum Ground Cinnamon, with the lot codes listed above, can discard it or return it to the store for a full refund.

Anyone concerned they may have been exposed to lead, should contact their healthcare provider to report their symptoms. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 201-864-1115 between the hours of 9-5 ET.

In addition to announcing the recall, the FDA has sent a letter to all cinnamon manufacturers, processors, distributors and facility operators in the U.S., warning them of the requirement that there are controls necessary to prevent contamination from potential chemical hazards in ground cinnamon products.
