Average solar cost by service area

Solar panel costs vary based on your location and other factors. The map below shows average overall prices in Solar SME’s service areas to give you a general idea of what to expect. Your specific energy needs, panel efficiency and other variables could make your costs higher or lower than these averages.

Average solar panel cost by state

Note: Costs in this table are average costs for the state and do not represent specific company pricing. "Average cost after ITC” reflects the cost after receiving the full 30% solar investment tax credit (ITC). “Estimated net savings” is the average amount residents in that state will save on electricity over 25 years, including their cost of installing a solar energy system.

Equipment brands sold by Solar SME

As a solar installer, Solar SME does not manufacture its own equipment. The company offers equipment from the following brands:

  • Enphase Energy
  • Generac Power Systems
  • LG Electronics
  • Panasonic
  • Qcells

Solar SME installation

Solar SME starts the process with a consultation and a site assessment to assess your needs and options. The company also provides a quote for your system (including equipment and installation).

If you choose to proceed, Solar SME completes a site visit and works on permitting. From system design to operation permissions, it takes around two to six months to install; Solar SME’s average project time is three months. After permitting is complete, the panels are installed. The actual solar panel installation takes one to three days, and then it’s time for inspections and activation. Solar SME offers 24/7 monitoring service post-installation.

Solar SME services

After your system is installed and active, Solar SME provides 24/7 system monitoring and ongoing maintenance services. This includes solar panel cleaning, efficiency checks and solar panel inspection. These routine maintenance services help extend solar panel life and ensure maximum efficiency.

Solar SME costs

Solar SME offers pricing as low as $3,542 for a 4-kilowatt (kW) system. In general, the average cost for a 6-kW system before any incentives is $17,852. System size is the biggest factor affecting overall costs.

This pricing is before any tax credits or other incentives are used, including the federal solar investment tax credit (ITC) and any state or municipal incentives.

Financing

Solar SME offers financing options for solar panel projects. The company has several options that don’t require down payments, and it offers solar leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs) in eligible states.

If you go with a lease or PPA, Solar SME owns and maintains the panels. You pay a fixed price for what the solar system produces. Speak with a representative to discuss financing and leasing options.

Solar SME warranty

Solar SME provides a 25-year workmanship warranty. It installs Seraphim, REC and Qcells solar panels, all of which have a 25-year manufacturer warranty. There may be warranties available for other equipment, like batteries and inverters, depending on the manufacturer.

I strongly recommend that homeowners carefully document the condition of their roof, attic, pipes, and vents before allowing Solar SME to perform any installation. Before Solar SME installed my solar panels, I did not have the roof leaks or moisture problems I am dealing with today. After the installation, I discovered serious issues in the area where their contractors worked.

Most concerning, Solar SME ACKNOWLEDGED IN WRITING that its contractors cut a ventilation pipe while installing the solar panels. The pipe was covered, and I was never informed that it had been cut or altered. I discovered the issue after serious moisture developed inside my home and part of my second floor was damaged.

There is also another leaking/damaged pipe located less than half a meter from the area where their contractors worked. It was not leaking before the solar installation. Despite admitting that they cut the nearby ventilation pipe, Solar SME claims this second problem is unrelated and wants to charge me approximately $750 for their contractor to repair it.

What I find particularly unacceptable is that Solar SME admits its contractors cut the ventilation pipe, but they are only offering to replace or reconnect that pipe while refusing to accept responsibility for the other property damage I have reported. Their handling of the situation has also been extremely frustrating. They repeatedly take a long time to respond even though they know I am dealing with active roof leaks and moisture, where delays can allow additional damage to occur.

I have photographs, emails, my contract, and written communications documenting the situation, including Solar SME's own written acknowledgment that its contractors cut the ventilation pipe. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Solar SME. Homeowners considering this company should carefully photograph and document their property before installation and keep copies of every communication afterward.

Terrible Solar company. Took 6 or more months to install, then they failed and it still didn't work. We have an expensive 50K+ for a solar panel system with battery backup from SolarSME, and more than a year now, it has never worked, not once as promised and techs cannot figure out the problems despite repeated visits. Very difficult to schedule service and often arrive unannounced and leave no follow-up to confirm on what was resolved. I often have to call them for follow up. The company originally promised if the system didn't work, they would make it right and pay some of the costs due to high power bills and delays. That has never happened. SolarSME shows little accountability or customer care to resolve the problem efficiently.
