What is TurboTax?

TurboTax is a popular tax preparation software designed to simplify the process of filing federal and state income tax returns. Like many of its competitors, the software provides users with intuitive prompts and detailed instructions to help them identify the best deductions and credits for their tax situation. TurboTax offers multiple versions of the software, including both online and desktop options, and provides additional support via live assistance and audit support services.

TurboTax is available for Spanish speakers, but there are limitations. The full-service tax plan is available in Spanish for both federal and state returns. Individuals can file federally in Spanish with the DIY and assisted options, but some content will be in English. These two plans do not support state returns in Spanish.

How does TurboTax work?

The TurboTax software coaches you through filing taxes by asking about your:

  • Job(s)
  • Filing status
  • Income
  • Homeowner status
  • Children and dependents
  • Charitable donations
  • Investments

From this information, TurboTax determines what tax bracket you fall in and what forms you need to complete. Filing electronically will get you the fastest refund possible.

TurboTax products

TurboTax has three different levels of service: do-it-yourself, assisted and full-service. Individuals filing a Form 1040 return and claiming limited credits only can qualify to do their taxes for free.

Free plan
You can file your taxes for free with TurboTax by yourself. For a limited time, TurboTax might offer free filing with live assistance, too. Taxpayers with basic files are eligible, even if they have student loan interest deductions — although TurboTax mentions on its website that only 37% of filers qualify for this free level. If you need to file itemized deductions, you will need to use the paid version of the software.
Do-your-own taxes
With the DIY plan, you can use the software to guide you through your filing, uploading and importing your documents via mobile device. This level of filing comes with audit support and a maximum refund guarantee.
Assisted
With this plan, you will prepare your taxes yourself with the help of the guided software. A tax expert is available for unlimited support and does a final review before you submit your return.
Full-service
With the full-service tax help, a tax expert will schedule a quick call with you to get you organized. You will then upload all your tax documents securely, and your tax expert will prepare your return and work with you in real time. When the taxes are done, you will have a final meeting to ensure everything is ready to sign off on.

TurboTax FAQ

Can you file back taxes with TurboTax?

Yes, taxpayers can file the previous two years of returns online with TurboTax. However, you will need to buy the right software for that year, and it costs more than the current year’s pricing.

Can you pay for TurboTax with your refund?

Yes, most e-filers can pay for TurboTax with their refund. Prices vary based on the plan you use, and you will see the price before you file.

Can I import my previous tax returns into TurboTax?

If you can save your past 1040 or 1040-SR as a PDF, then you can import it to TurboTax, even if it is from a competitor company or certified public accountant (CPA).

Does TurboTax offer a refund advance?

TurboTax does offer refund advance loans for early filers (typically between January and February). Eligible taxpayers can receive up to $4,000 without any fees, interest or impact on credit.

Still have questions?

Is TurboTax legit?

TurboTax is a legitimate tax preparation software that is trusted by millions of users worldwide. Intuit, the company that owns TurboTax, also owns QuickBooks, Mint and Credit Karma. It stands behind its software with multiple accuracy and satisfaction guarantees. In January 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued an Opinion and Final Order against TurboTax, saying the company was falsely advertising free services. Due to this filing, TurboTax has since clarified that its free services are available to a limited type of filer.

I'm a long-time TurboTax customer, I have TT returns from 2007. This was my last year with them. Why? [1] For no apparent reason, TurboTax now requires you to run Windows 11 on your PC (and they say so, so you won't be surprised). As a 50-year computer professional, I fail to understand why this is the case, 64-bit Windows 10 should suffice. I certainly will not use Windows 11, but of course, that is a personal choice. That's just one reason. [2] I am an active stock trader with a major brokerage, and it is a great convenience that TT can download all my stock information and smoothly incorporate it into my return. I'm very pleased with the way this works...but I also trade commodities futures and their support is not only nonexistent, it appears to be at variance with reality.

There's a form you need to manually enter (no interview support) but the TT form has Alphabetic data where the actual IRS form needs numbers. I don't remember the form number, sorry. Gone are the days when commodities were restricted to the wealthy, contract sizes are smaller and commissions are modest. More and more middle-class traders are appearing. [3] TurboTax will occasionally -- far too often -- promote extra-cost services when all I want to do is print and file. This is annoying, I don't want to pay to be hit with advertisements (one reason to avoid Windows 11, too). You would think this drop in quality would create an opening for newcomers. I certainly hope so. Taxes are a growing business!

Beware of Turbo Tax online. The software made a mistake on my tax return 2025 and instead of the refund Turbo Tax said I was getting, I got a letter from the IRS stating that I owed $895. Read the fine print in the "Accuracy Guarantee Claim", because they do not take responsibility for mistakes the system makes. They will not return my $895 and will not let me make a claim because the IRS letter did not add penalties or interest. I have used Turbo Tax since 2012, but I will never use them again and I will tell everyone what they did to me.

Paid TT to do my taxes. Their tax professional missed out on some BASIC deductions. Now, trying to get this amended and reaching someone or customer service is next to impossible. Entirely cloud based model with random people working for them. Just a terrible experience!

This was a very disappointing experience. The tax expert filed an incorrect return, putting me at risk with the Internal Revenue Service. What followed was weeks of trying to get it fixed through customer service, with no real resolution. I was passed between five different experts, and each one gave conflicting advice. There was no continuity, no ownership, and I had to keep re explaining my situation every time. Instead of clarity, I was left more confused and frustrated. I would strongly caution against relying on the “expert” service unless you are willing to risk errors, wasted time, and potential penalties.

In the past I had straight forward taxes. I guess moving across the country creates issues when you have not had time to change your ID. I would reach out to TurboTax because I had already had an issue with my health insurance and got no assistance from TurboTax on where to even find the information I needed. They assured me there were no problems with my return that the IRS had excepted it. Wrong because I moved I needed to verify some information. TurboTax had no clue did not inform me at all. I received a letter from the IRS. Now I have no clue when I will see my return. Very displeased and will not recommend this product to anyone.

Successfully completed my return and submitted electronically to IRS expecting a refund of $4618. I have since received a billing from IRS for $4578 due to calculation errors on Social Security - so much for no tax on social security. TurboTax failed miserably.

I have used TurboTax for decades and this year was the an extreme nightmare and I will NEVER use the software again. I was not able to view my forms for accuracy until I paid in full. I was then allowed to print the forms, but I was not allowed to go back and edit. The return was full of errors. For my daughter's return not only did I pay once again for the software, but I had to pay to transmit to the IRS and then another fee to have refund deposited into her account. Intuit has obviously just focused on their bottom line and not customer services.

Turbotax for the Tax year 2026 is regrettably a failure for the tax year of 2025/26. It cannot be trusted for forms downloads as they are incomplete. Forms like the T3 which may have multiple lines for 1 form, is downloading parts of different lines, this providing incorrect totals. Support is worse than useless as the troubleshooting provided by agents is nothing more than boiler plate procedures like "launch as administrator", "reboot your pc", "Reinstall Turbo tax" or other such stupidities that most people already know to do or moreover, steps for issues that really merit more attention than these insulting steps. Or else questions "Do you have the latest version installed" when they KNOW that if you don't update when an update presents itself, the application WILL NOT open. SO WHY ASK???

Then the most insulting statement is when they tell you, "I haven't heard anything about this problem and we have nothing on file about anyone having this issue". REALLY? All the posts by disgruntled customers and the VAST evidence provided by Google about these problems is what.....MY IMAGINATION??? I think most customers merit a REFUND as this is really the worst release of TurboTax I have had to rely on.

I have been rematched with a new Turbotax expert four times in the last week and there were several documents found to be missing that I originally uploaded to Turbotax for our return, causing missing data. The AI functionality is also causing noticeable errors. My tax return has not progressed over the last 7 days due to errors and faulty handling due to no fault of my own. Horrible customer service. Horrible functionality. I am tempted to bring my tax return to H&R block so that I can finally file.

I initially filed with TurboTax again this year and because I had a vacation planned for early April, chose to use their "expert" services which was being offered for a promotional price of $150. It required having everything uploaded by 3/31, I had everything up and available by 3/19. Had a meeting and started working with an expert on 3/19. Checked in w her on 3/30 before leaving and was a told yep, she had everything she needed. Received several requests for info while I was out of the country which I provided and was reassured that things were progressing. Then for a reason unbeknownst to me I was switched by TT to another expert on 4/7. I thought perhaps the first person had too many customers and they [TT] were trying to make sure everything got filed on time. Silly me.

Long story short, by the time the second expert did my taxes the apparent "grace" period of 4/8/26 had passed and my tab came to $533. Which of course needed to be paid before actual filing could take place. Several more calls including trying to reach corporate did not yield satisfaction. They would not honor the promotional price and tried to pin the reason on me despite the many calls and online chats I had with them before 4/8. In every interaction from 3/30-4/7 I was assured not to worry, my taxes were being handled.

I met with my 2nd expert on 4/13 to review why my tax bill was so unexpectedly high. When I asked for the cost adjustment of $150 total I was offered 20%, then 30% off of the $533 but TT would not complete my taxes as promised for $150. Nor did they seem interested in making things right. I think they were banking on me giving up and paying their inflated price since only 1 day remained before taxes were due. Seems like the expert forgot to include my quarterly pre-payments which resulted in a significant federal and state tax bill owed.

Not happy with their business model or accuracy. Customer service is nice but I honestly don't think they have any power other than to say they understand the frustration. For that reason I chose to switch to H&R Block online the day before taxes were due. Online learning curve was steep for me but when I included the amount already paid from quarterly installments, lo and behold I am now getting a federal refund, and had to pay the state only 1/5th of what the TT expert said I owed. Like I said... I think they know that if they stall long enough and talk in circles they can employ their bait and switch tactic. Won't use them again!
