I have used TurboTax in the past, the past 3 years to file my employment taxes. This year, they snuck a very high fee in there, so for basic employment W2, they charged me 150$. I couldn't believe it. It was understood I would receive a certain amount back, and it was documented on email, but to my surprise, it was 150$ short and I currently have no phone so I can't call them, they have no email and it's talking to a computer on the live chat so I'm screwed, I guess? I'm pissed big time.

I have used Turbo Tax for years. This year I paid to have a professional review by an expert. After review Turbo Tax indicated we had a $3000+ refund coming, however the IRS refunded $1000+ with an explanation that indicated turbo tax did not include our social security income as taxable income. I contacted turbo tax for a refund of just the amount I had paid for the expert review since apparently the review did not find that our S.S. was not included as taxable income. Turbo Tax responded with the answer of since I had paid for it and my taxes were filed I was not eligible for a refund. So much for having an expert review done. I will not be using Turbo Tax from this point forward. Turbo Taxes loss plus I will be informing all that I know to not use Turbo Tax.

It is completely unprofessional of TurboTax to send you a text link on Tax day saying that your online tax filing is Incomplete and need your signature! But that link only sends you to marketing information, when you’re filing has already been accepted by the IRS. What a complete unprofessional scam way of doing business. Especially on Tax day..

I bought desktop Home and Business and certain features required me to be ONLINE to use (ie, edit forms, make charitible deduction info) which defeats the whole point of buying desktop. I DON'T WANT TO BE ONLINE DOING THESE DOCUMENTS PERIOD. STAY OUT OF MY BUSINESS AND RESPECT MY PRIVACY. I've been a TurboTax user for 20years, they are starting to annoy me with the "online" accounting, etc., I include QBO in this. MY POINT: My or anyone else's accounting/financial records are NOT YOUR FOREVER BUSINESS INTUIT. I want to use what was otherwise a great tax software OFF OF THE INTERNET TO INCLUDE FEATURES IN IT. Be careful when using TurboTax online before confirming or proceeding read the fine print. I was just robbed out of 129$ for a service I didn’t not use. Before starting the process they ask you what service you want to use, I selected free but at the end of the tax process they asked again with no option to choose other than deluxe or pro. Which I believe is unfair and robbery cause I did everything myself.

TurboTax estimated my return would take 1:45. I think it was 9 hours; TurboTax stopped counting. TurboTax thinks $29K (tax) - $21K (payments) = $84K (tax due). It took an hour with an agent to correct this; it involved deleting everything and starting over. The suggestions on Help do not match the menu. The AI phone bot is useless and frustrating. When I went to file, I got into an endless loop entering the bank information. The next day, it accepted the bank information and the other steps for direct filing. When I hit the file button, it produced a blank screen and hung. The next day, I determined it had not filed. I tried again and got into another endless loop. An agent in chat tried to help, but I lost the chat window and wasn’t able to get it back. I finally figured out how to file by mail.

This product has gone downhill. It tricks you into signing up for products you don't need. You can’t review forms until you pay for your tax docs. Format sucks. You never know which form you’re entering. You can’t review forms or jump to a single form, you have to run through input forms one by one. I feel it was not worth the $209 price plus for Premium $69 for state. I only contact so called experts to figure out how the lame software worked. Support was fast but staff very inexperienced.

Well after being a H&R Block customer for 37 years, and they were charging me $250 for 10 minutes of their time, I decided I would do something cheaper. I began to go to a volunteer group that did taxes at a community college for free you just make an appointment I did that a couple years then last year I lost my driver's license so there's no way that I can get my taxes done anywhere.
So I had to file online myself I did so but I did so when I clicked on a link for TurboTax it brought me to a different party. I ended up in a place called Free tax USA and got pissed off as hell as I put my account number for deposit, they never did it and I had to get my checks mail to me which took longer this year having an ID. I said that was so easy, besides the ** company I use that took forever to issue a check and mail it. I would use TurboTax since I've heard such wonderful things about them, well I have to take responsibility; I put the wrong account number on it. My bank caught it and I bet it made her even worse mistake as I checked that I wanted early refund on my federal.
Now you can start to kiss your money goodbye because when they attempt it to put it in it was the wrong account number did they did it bounce back to them or the IRS no it disappeared into thin air and I was told to not contact TurboTax for 6 weeks because they had 6 weeks to return my money. Six weeks later, I still don't have it, and there is no phone number for the name of the bank they gave me and when I called again, they didn't have one either. So now you have to go file a tracer with the RI IRS. My advice to you is don't go near ** TurboTax. It's a good thing I didn't pay for this abuse. Sorry for those who did.

Switch and Bait misleading pricing/no customer support. I will be filing a complaint against TurboTax regarding misleading pricing, forced upselling, and poor customer support. I initially signed up for the “Basic” version of TurboTax, which was advertised at approximately $70. After spending several hours completing my tax return (well beyond the estimated time provided), the software unexpectedly prompted me to upgrade to “Premium Assist,” even though I did not select this option or use its features.
The system then indicated that I “only need Premium,” suggesting a different tier would save me $100, but required restarting my entire tax return process to change plans. I was not given a clear or consistent explanation of the differences in pricing between Basic, Premium, and Premium Assist, nor was I able to downgrade without starting over after investing nearly 6 hours of time.
I contacted customer support and spent approximately 1.5 hours speaking with a representative (“Alexa”), who was unable to explain:
*Why I could not simply downgrade without restarting*The actual cost differences between tiers
*Why the system changed my required product level after I had already completed much of my return
The representative also acknowledged that the situation did not make sense, but could not resolve it. This experience feels like a bait-and-switch pricing model and a forced upgrade system that wastes user time and creates confusion about final pricing. I believe I was misled about both cost and product requirements. I paid $250 instead of the $70 as advertised.

Then, a "tax expert" by the name of Aisha reprimanded me recently when I couldn't understand her on the phone because of her accent. I'm partially deaf in one ear and I didn't need to be barked at. I bought Turbotax b/c I thought it would be convenient to efile. It was an awful mistake. I tried to download 1099-div but turbo tax does not connect to the mutual fund that issued it. When I manually entered the data Turbo tax said no form 1040-schedule D was required. But IRS instructions say in my situation it IS required (from IRS instructions Capital Gain Distributions). These distributions are paid by a mutual fund (or other regulated investment company) or real estate investment trust from its net realized long-term capital gains. Distributions of net realized short-term capital gains aren’t treated as capital gains. Instead, they are included on Form 1099-DIV as ordinary dividends.
Enter on Schedule D, line 13, the total capital gain distributions paid to you during the year, regardless of how long you held your investment. This amount is shown in box 2a of Form 1099-DIV). I have done my taxes for years and had to submit a schedule D and I still have to, but I cannot. Also, Turbo tax calculated that I owed a $14 tax on excess accumulations when I downloaded 1099-R, that was ridiculous. I withdrew all the required RMDs. When I manually entered all the data (including answering the same set of questions about items that did not apply for each form) the $14 tax magically disappeared. I have spent a lot more time struggling with the turbo tax demons than I would have doing my return manually. And I see no way to use turbo tax to file a return that would not trigger an IRS nastygram telling me there are missing forms on my return.

DO NOT USE THIS TAX PREPARER UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET CHARGED MORE MONEY THAN THEY SAY IT WILL COST. It stated that the fee would be $40.00 and when I submitted the information they asked, (to file my taxes) the fee went to $59.00 + tax. I tried to get it reduced back to THE original amount. The site said that since I finished my return they couldn't reduce it to the basic service. They upgraded me without my knowledge, then said I couldn't change it to basic (wait, I thought the site said I had finished). I was on the phone with customer service after getting an email saying I hadn't finished my return. I was never told by the software I wasn't finished at the time and it was a day later they sent the e-mail.
Long story shortened after approx 4 hours with customer service supposedly (since I responded to the email, how was I to know for sure that it wasn't a hacker) The representative wanted to have me share my computer with her so she could control it. No way since I responded to the email link. I paid and still couldn't even see the return until I finished it. What did they mean I hadn't finished it. So why did they charge me before it was finished. I have used this software back in 2021 and was satisfied. Guess what-never again! Log onto (consumeraffairs.com) and search for INTUIT TURBOTAX. There are thousands of one stars compared to the few higher ratings.

Taxes are never fun, but this was unreal. The initial process of TurboTax took me 4+ hours of what should have been a fairly simple return. But the real adventure began when setting up payment. When you select to "make payments to the IRS" it links you to a third party site 97Tax who is *not* the IRS. 97Tax sets up a payment plan and charges you a whopping fee, then you deal with them through the mail. However, there is no communication between 97Tax and TurboTax, and apparently no communication between 97Tax and the IRS. So you still have to file your taxes through TurboTax choosing a DIFFERENT payment option. But now you've set up TWO payment plans to pay the IRS two different ways, simultaneously.
I've spent several hours with each of the 3 organizations, and they each told me to talk to the other to sort it out. The IRS knew nothing about TurboTax or 97Tax. They recommended I cancel whatever deal I had going with 97Tax (which I mistakenly thought was the IRS). It has taken me a week to unravel, and time will tell if it has actually been resolved. Buyer beware.

If you pay for Medicare you are not eligible for free tax returns as they create a schedule for that even if you have no other medical expenses to deduct. Unless itemizing you are better off reporting no Medicare payments so no deduction will be applied. Otherwise you’ll have a bill for $209 that is totally unnecessary. It is cheaper to how a tax accountant for seniors on Medicare.

I HATE how Turbo Tax DOES NOT tell you that right after you pay for your taxes and they are sent off to be filed, you're going to lose ALL contact with your tax expert. That's it, she was gone. There was an ongoing glitch in that I was supposed to be charged $150 but was charged $357 because of a fault in the system. Felicia ** told me to go ahead and pay that much and then Turbo Tax would reimburse me (according to her supervisors). She also said she would get hold of me to see how it went. I even asked her to please send her email address in case we got cut off (I sensed that might happen), so that I have access to our messaging to prove I was supposed to get charged $150. She did not do that, so I spent an HOUR on the phone this morning trying to figure this all out. I'm going to give the refund a couple of days to process, and if I have to call AGAIN to get my money back....I'm going to be livid.

I helped my son, Joshua **, complete his very simple tax filing with Turbotax and we were assessed an additional $129 fee for a service we did not need. My son makes very little money and has no itemizations. Because he waited until the April 6th of 2026, we ended up paying the additional amount thinking it must have been a "glitch" because we repeatedly clicked on the lesser amount. We were later informed that because we clicked on "renew" when using Turbotax last year, that mandated we continue to use the more expensive service that we realized this year we don't need. I appealed this additional fee after calling and getting a link to appeal. The appeal was denied because they said "we had already paid". Also- Turbo Tax successfully lobbied our government to remove their Free Tax Filing feature from the IRS website. ** I will NEVER use this service again.

We are senior citizens living alone and filing our taxes as married filing jointly. Filing our tax return is already a stressful experience for us each year. Unfortunately, TurboTax 2025 has made this process far more difficult and burdensome. The desktop version of TurboTax 2025 now requires Windows 11 and will not run on older operating systems, including Windows 10 or Windows 7. As a result, we are being forced to purchase an entirely new computer just to prepare and file our taxes. On top of that, we must learn how to use a new and unfamiliar (what feels like a hostile) operating environment. We are not technologically savvy. We already struggle with basic tasks on our cell phones. The added burden of buying new hardware and adapting to a completely different system has turned a normally stressful task into an overwhelming ordeal.
This change feels like senior citizen abuse. Many older adults rely on TurboTax because it has historically been user-friendly and compatible with the computers they already own. Forcing loyal, long-time customers—especially seniors on fixed incomes—to incur significant new expenses and technical challenges is unfair and unreasonable. We kindly request that you investigate this matter and advocate on behalf of affected consumers, particularly senior citizens who are being disproportionately impacted.

Turbotax is terrible. I have been using it for 15 years and they keep on changing the format to lead you into more expensive options with so-called experts whom don't know their rear end from their elbow. In fact, this year they made a huge mistake that almost cost me thousands of dollars, which I did catch right away and now have to file an amended return. The 2025 software was not updated for the SALT payments to high-tax states like New Jersey. When I contacted the "expert" at Turbotax, he had no clue what I was asking about, and I wasted an hour with him and others to try and resolve the problem---unsuccessfully. I will now have file an amended return on paper.

I've used TurboTax for 8 or 9 years. This year I had trouble deducting an IRA but was qualified to do so. Using the AI support took me down a number of dead ends and was difficult and frustrating and took a long time to resolve the issue. In the past these issues were quickly resolved with human support. Now they charge extra for that. If they don't include human support next year I'll probably switch to a more user friendly software that provides human support at a lower reasonable cost.
