The salesperson who came to our home was very personable and respectful. He answered our questions and provided a lot of information for us. However, when we told him we weren't ready to sign on the spot, he continued to prod. I made it clear that we didn't need to hear anymore at that time but we need to discuss it amongst ourselves. He decided to call the VP to see if there were any other deals. The VP was on speaker phone and the same information was relayed to him and he continued to try and push us and prod for more information. At that point I said the conversation was over and asked the salesperson to leave. We then heard the VP say "that's fine, I wouldn't want to work with these people anyway". My husband let him know we could still hear him to which he replied "Yeah I know, that's why I said it like that". Not a problem, we will NEVER work with them!

BEWARE of Top Tier Solar Solutions – Stay Away! Since the 30% Federal Tax Credit went away at the end of ‘25, Top Tier has been scamming customers left and right. It starts with a text out of nowhere stating “This is (reps name) reaching out about your solar panels. We work directly with SolarEdge and Enphase. Our technicians are performing system audits to ensure your inverter is still operating at full capacity. Nothing major, we just want to verify your system isn’t losing power. We will be in your area today and tomorrow (dates and times). The appointment is free and it should take only 45 min. What time works for you?”. (Does this not sound like an obvious scam?).

After getting about 5 or 6 of these texts, I finally took them up on the offer to hear them try and scam me. The following day, the representative showed up, took photos of my meter, Enphase Combiner box, and the solar panels (there was no audit and I knew there would not be). The rep then came into my home and said that NC Duke Energy did away with 1:1 Net Metering at the end of 2025 and I was now enrolled in the new program that she called, “Net Billing” (Incorrect – Changes to the NC Duke 1:1 Net Metering program do not take place unto Jan. 1, 2027 for NC customer installed prior to 10/1/2023 and it actually called “Bridge Net Metering”).

She then tried to sell me an overpriced battery ($25,900) for the next hour; she told me the battery would supply my home with ALL the energy I needed at night due to the new Duke Energy “Net Billing” program. She said with this battery, I will never pay NC Duke Energy another dime because of the battery! I asked if it would handle heavier loads like my AC, heat, etc., she said yes it will give you 10,000 kw’s of back-up power and you do not need to worry about running out of power (yet another lie and not to mention impossible unless you buy 1,000 batteries – but rather, the truth is that it will only supply me with 10.08 kwh – Enphase Encharge 10 Battery).

I asked about the specific specs of the battery and she said, “I am not an engineer” (you do not need to be an engineer to know basic specs). I asked about the warranties, and she said that they match the one that I had from my previous installer – She said since my system is 3 years old, I would have a remaining warranty of 20 years all-encompassing solar, labor, parts, service, and battery – HUGE red flag). I then asked to get a quote, and she said we will get you prequalified and I said no, I pay cash and you do not need to do a prequal / application for cash.

I then had to sign to get a copy of the quote / proposal (HUGE red flag) but went ahead and did so as I knew what was about to happen. Get ready for it… I then not only got the quote, but I also received a contract / agreement as well (they applied my signature meant for the proposal to the agreement / contract – ILLEGAL!). I was not worried though as I sent in the cancelation the next day (I was already prepared for this to happen). Then she said I would be contacted Monday or Tuesday for a welcome call and said to have a copy of my NC Duke Energy Bill, Homeowners Declaration page, and copy of my Homeowners Insurance. I explained that I would not have an answer until the following Friday, but she said that was fine as they like to get ahead of everything.

My one and only overall goal for Top Tier to visit my home and I planned to keep up the charades as long as I possibly could to keep her from taking advantage of another customer who possibly didn’t know it was a scam. The reason I know about how the “system audit” visit would go, the NC Duke Program actual start date, battery specs, etc. is because I work in the Solar Industry! I know, live, and breathe solar, batteries, warranties, and the NC Duke Energy programs each and every day. This lady should not be selling solar, batteries, or warranties as she absolutely knows nothing about whatsoever.

Again, stay the hell away from This company! I have filed complaints with the following companies, and I encourage everyone that has been contacted by these scammers to follow suit: BBB, NC Attorney General, FCC, Consumer Affairs, and many others. I have fielded many calls from customer associated with the company I work for as well as many others that I have worked with in the past… I simply tell them to hit “STOP” on the texts and file complaints about Top Tier.

When Top Tier comes out to do the fake “system audit” and they see that you already have a battery, they walk away when you are not paying attention or around as they know they will not make a sale. It is obvious that the owner of the company does not care what game they are scamming people out of as long as he hits his goals. I am disgusted that this company is still in business and giving the industry a bad name.

This company has been a nightmare for us; I would give them -5 stars if I could. They mislead us multiple times right from the start. We had to get lawyers involved when their insulation people did REALLY shoddy work in the attic; we couldn't get the company to respond to any of our calls. Insulation is part of their roof package. Had to throw someone from Top Tier out only just this morning as they claimed they wanted to do an audit on our setup, you know, the one THEY set up. It was a cover and ultimately to try and sell us a battery to the tune of $192.00 a month for the next twenty years. We suspected they would try something like this. They would not take a firm "NO", they just kept pressuring aggressively, got a little rude and began claiming that "It'll look really bad on us as a solar company if you don't buy this battery because you're still paying a little to the power company; it just makes us look really bad".

My son had to tell them at least ten times he wasn't going to be making any decision today, their consultant actually looked shocked at being told "No", like it was a brand-new word to her. They ultimately double-teamed up on us with a call to 'her boss', and my son---the actual homeowner, and my husband, had to show their consultant firmly out the door after ending the call with the 'boss' ---who was insanely pushy and rude. My son thought it was a deliberate tactic to send the pretty woman out to the house to 'soften' him up before getting the bossman on the phone. I wonder how many other customers they've pretty much bullied into buying their battery. The actual solar panels? They work I guess, but you pay a pretty penny for every single one. There is only some degree of protection from power companies raising their rates. If you do solar, I wouldn't advise Top Tier.

I would have to say make sure you read your contract. The way it was sold to me was that the panels would be powering my home then the excess produced energy would be sent to the power company. In actuality, all of your energy generated is sent to your power company then back to your home. Which sounds like it’s the same, but it’s not. Power companies switched from net metering in my state, which was a 1-for-1 transaction. Now they buy your kW at wholesale price and sell it back to you when you need it at an upcharge. I know what you’re thinking, that sounds like the power companies fault. In part yes, but Top Tier was aware this law was passed and never mentioned it one time as being a possibility. Not only that but they lead me to believe I would be storing my own energy as if I would have a battery. Now to remedy this they offered to install a battery for an additional $20k. Very, very expensive mistake going solar with this company.

They sold me solar panels and told me would supply all my electricity, did not, provides very little. They came back and tried to sell me more panels, when I complained they did nothing. I complained to my state Attorney General and Top Tier told me to drop complaint and they would upgrade me at no charge. I did that and to this day no upgrades. This company is a fraud run by liars and thieves.
