Beer drinkers have worse diets, exercise less and smoke more than others

Doctors should be careful to ask their patients what they drink, not just whether they drink

A new study by researchers at Tulane University found that people who mainly drink beer have worse diets, exercise less, and smoke more than people who drink wine, liquor, or a mix of these.

Why this matters: Drinking too much alcohol can cause serious liver problems. Eating healthy and being active are really important for preventing these problems.

    What the study found:

Researchers looked at the diets of over 1,900 adults who drink alcohol. They found that none of the groups had very healthy diets.

    • Beer drinkers had the unhealthiest diets, ate the most calories, and were the least active. They were also more likely to be male, younger, smokers, and have lower incomes.
    • Wine drinkers had the healthiest diets.

    Possible reasons:

    • Food choices: People often drink beer with unhealthy foods like pizza and burgers. Wine is often paired with healthier meals that include vegetables and lean protein.
    • Thirst: Salty and fried foods make people thirsty, which might lead them to drink more beer.

    What doctors can do:

Doctors should ask patients what kinds of alcohol they drink. This can help doctors give advice about healthy eating and exercise habits.

    What you drink matters

Basically, the study suggests that what you drink can be linked to your overall lifestyle. If you're mainly a beer drinker, it might be a good idea to think about improving your diet and exercising more.

The study is being presented at a meeting of liver disease specialists.

“Alcohol overuse is the leading cause of cirrhosis in the U.S., and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is rapidly increasing,” said Madeline Novack, chief resident at Tulane School of Medicine’s internal medicine residency program and lead author of the study.

“Both types of liver disease often coexist, and lifestyle changes are key to managing and preventing these conditions, starting with understanding the link between alcohol use and poor nutrition,” Novack said.

Using a survey of a nationally representative sample of more than 1,900 U.S. adults who reported current alcohol use, researchers compared the diet quality among people who consume beer only (38.9%), wine only (21.8%), liquor only (18.2%), or a combination of alcohol types (21%), measuring self-reported eating habits against the Healthy Eating Index, a validated standardized tool based on dietary guidelines.

None of the alcohol-using groups came close to achieving the 80-point score that is considered an adequate diet on the 100-point Healthy Eating Index, Novack said, but the beer drinkers scored lowest at 49. Wine drinkers scored 55, and both liquor-only drinkers and combination drinkers scored nearly 53.

Beer-only drinkers, who were more likely to be male, younger, smokers, and low income, also reported the highest total daily caloric intake, adjusting for body weight, and the lowest level of physical activity.

Previous studies have found that dietary quality declines with increasing alcohol consumption of any type, but little has been reported on the influence of specific alcoholic beverage type.

For prevention of liver disease and other health issues, physicians should ask about the type of alcohol consumed to guide discussion of healthy behaviors, Novack said. For example, findings of this study can be applied to patients who identify as beer-only drinkers and physicians could suggest increasing fruit and vegetable intake, as well as physical activity.

The study is being published in the journal Nutrients.

Amazon Prime shuts down FreeVee, ramping up Prime Video instead

Viewers will soon have to head to Prime Video for all existing content

Amazon’s FreeVee platform has been a free, ad-supported streaming service for consumers since it was first introduced in 2019.

Now, Amazon has decided to phase out the streaming platform, instead focusing on ramping up its Prime Video offerings.

“We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, content from other services as an add-on subscription, live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, FAST Channels, and the complete Amazon Freevee content offering,” an Amazon spokesperson said.

“To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels – all available on Prime Video.”

    What happens now?

Over the next few weeks, Amazon will start directing viewers away from FreeVee and over to Prime Video.

Consumers will be able to access all of the FreeVee originals, as well as all other content from the platform, on Prime Video. The goal is to have all streaming content in one location, making Prime Video accessible to more than just Prime members.

FreeVee has been available in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Austria, and the shows and movies will still be available for viewers. Now, FreeVee streamers will head to Prime Video – even if they don’t have a Prime membership – and access the “Watch for Free” content.

The decision to shut down FreeVee comes just about a year since Amazon announced it would debut a tier of Prime Video that featured ad-supported content – essentially taking the place of free, ad-supported streamer.

The retailer will be closed on Thanksgiving

With Black Friday right around the corner, and many retailers getting ready for the big sales, it’s time for consumers to start preparing their shopping trips.

Target has officially announced its plans for shoppers this holiday season, including extended shopping hours during this busy season.

"Target is the place to be on Black Friday — and all season long — with incredible deals on thousands of items across every category and exclusive in-store items you'll want to pick up for everyone on your gift list this year," said Mark Schindele, chief stores officer at Target.

"With extended store hours, convenient same-day pickup and delivery options and around-the-clock online availability, you can choose when, where and how to shop, and our fantastic team will be there to deliver."

      What to expect

Ahead of Black Friday, Target’s store hours will be what consumers are used to from their local stores. Then, starting on Black Friday, shoppers will have the opportunity for extended hours throughout the holiday season.

      Here’s what Target is planning:

      • Wednesday, November 27: Regular store hours. Same-day Drive Up or Pick Up orders will be available within two hours, and all orders must be placed within two hours of store closing. Target Circle360 members will have access to unlimited same-day delivery.

      • Thursday, November 28: All Target locations will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. While Black Friday sales are ongoing online, anything purchased on Thanksgiving Day will be available for pick-up on Black Friday.

      • Saturday, November 30 – Monday, December 23: Target locations will be open 7:00 a.m. local time and remain open through midnight local time to give shoppers even more time to shop during the busy holiday season.

      Black Friday deals

Target officially kicked off its holiday season sales on November 1. Despite the early start, the retailer has plans to keep running special sales and discounts through Christmas Eve, December 24.

Every day through Christmas Eve, Target will have its Deal of the Day, offering shoppers exclusive opportunities to save on specific items throughout the store for one day only.

Additionally, every week, Target will release a new lineup of deals that will give consumers the opportunity to save on certain things each week.

Lastly, Target’s official Black Friday sale starts online on Thanksgiving Day, November 28. In-person sales will begin on Black Friday, November 29.
