Rented a unit at the Farmington, MI location for 3 years. Yes, the price increased regularly but I did not deduct any stars from the rating because EVERY storage unit company does that and they did provide advance warning. The customer service is awesome, friendly, helpful, accommodating, will work with you on late payments. I vacated today and there was mouse poop on my storage containers but again, that happens in all outdoor-access storage units. Moved to a unit closer to home, was going to go with Public Storage but their customer service is awful and they are very unprofessional and unorganized so I went to another Extra Space location in Lincoln Park, MI, and rented there. That location is great as well.

I rented a unit at Extra Space Storage because I needed convenience and flexibility during a stressful move, but the experience has honestly been more aggravating than helpful. I was contacted and threatened with having my lock cut and being charged additional fees because the lock was apparently “not secured properly.” The problem is that when I first rented the unit, nobody was there to actually show me how the locking system worked or verify it was set up correctly. Now, despite explaining that I physically cannot get there until Tuesday because I live an hour away, management was completely unwilling to work with me or offer any reasonable grace period.

Instead of listening or trying to help, the employee I spoke with just repeatedly cited “corporate policy” and showed zero empathy or flexibility. So now I have to unexpectedly drive an hour just to avoid extra charges and unnecessary hassle. For the amount of money these units cost, customers should not be treated like inconveniences. Storage is supposed to reduce stress during difficult transitions — not add more of it.

Warning to all. Get rid of your things or sell it, just don’t put it in that storage facility. They have an infestation of rodents. I caught exactly 24 rodents. They do nothing about anything except raise your rent, not like they deserve it. The one that ran the facility would not get off her lazy butt to do anything and she was letting two homeless people live inside there for quite some time before I mentioned it to her because they kept causing problems for me. To say the least, there is a bad rodent problem, which was very disgusting, and half the time it smelled pretty bad.

In the wintertime when there was a rain and ice storm, there was recycles from the roof, 3 ft wide and all the way to the ground. I told her about it, and she showed no concern. I told her, "Look, people have to get in there daily and the doors are not accessible." She still showed no concern. My next step was to call the police on them. As for the maintenance? I secretly positioned those traps to see if they do anything and nope, they sat like that for weeks on in. Those rubber seals at the bottom of the doors were supposed to to be replaced but never were and a whole year passed and still were not. I mentioned it from time to time, and all I would hear was they are working on it. All they were working on was raising the rates and lining their pockets. One day, I just had enough and moved all my things out.

I had very bad vibes about that shady facility and I must say that I would never ever use one of them again. I would just get rid of the stuff. Greedy and they lure you in hook line and sinker, then take advantage of you. To me, I say one storage facility is no different than any other. Do not rent from absolutely any of them. All they want is your hard-earned money. They should be put out of business. Last thing. Rating them? In my opinion, they don’t deserve even one star, all they deserve is to be put out of business. I could go on about that sleazy, dirty rodent facility, but it would be 10 pages long. All I know is I was done with that scummy environment with scummy people that go there. They should be made to reimburse me for over 24 glue traps and rodent repellent that they should be providing, not me.

Every 4 months and I mean EVERY 4 months they increase the unit price by $80-100, yes you read that right. The “nice” manager claims to have a storage unit too so he plays at being understanding. Then he blames “corporate”, “I don’t even know the price until I see it, it changes every day”. They NEVER mentioned that incoming price is a promo or that it will increase significantly after a few months. They gouge and could care less. The increase is set (maybe if you’re lucky) in a small size postcard that looks like junk mail. They send many reminders to pay on the app or by email but not once do they email or note in your app that your rent has increased. They’re I’ll with greed. Stay away.

Something is very wrong with this place. The price they charge will not be what you will pay 2 months later. I am in the smallest unit and started paying $38.00. Two months later it went up 100% to $78. They know they are doing something wrong as you can not contact anyone at the corporate headquarters. Go anywhere else but this place. The BBB needs to deal with this type of behavior.

Extra Space just purchased the company I used to do business with. From the get-go, it hasn't been a good experience. I had autopay set up, but it didn't work on their end and charged me a $50 late fee. When I spoke to customer service - which was impossible to get in touch with - there is no central customer service, the request bounces you back to the location you rent from, so I had no recourse to complain about the service I was receiving. Also, on the website, I can't access my contract as I used to be able to. In addition, there is no way to sign up for email or text notifications without also signing up for advertising notifications. The FAQs offer no help at all. Now they want me to sign a new contract. They are not grandfathering the contract I already made with the previous company. I am stuck. I live overseas and am not ready to remove my possessions. Terrible company.

After multiple conversations with management, district management, and corporate customer service, only a limited recent credit adjustment was offered for April/May — despite the climate-control system failure beginning on December 20, 2025. There has still been no meaningful retroactive resolution for the previous months, customers paid full premium climate-controlled rates without receiving the advertised service. Formal consumer complaints and further escalation are now moving forward.

Horrible company. Told me I had to buy a lock, even though I already had an Extra-Space lock from before. They said don't worry, if I don't use it, I can turn it in when moving out for a refund. 6 months later I moved out and suddenly can't get a refund. The lock is unused and still in shrink wrapped plastic. The guy said I needed to turn it in when I rented the locker. When I rented the locker, I tried not to buy it in the first place! Then this guy says I should have turned it in before I moved into the locker? That makes no sense! The reason I changed lockers to a different company is because they raised my rent nearly 50% as soon as they could. Will NEVER use this company again! Bait and switch, dishonest BS!

Due to erratic changes in the US economy specifically for federal employees of a certain color, I had to relocate suddenly from a home, heard about Extra Space, sorted n stored my belongings believing I would extract those shortly, however, unbeknownst to me, after 4 months I found my rate to increase 80%. I inquired about this as it seemed another unusual promotional bait and switch by the exorbitant price increase. The rep said, "I told you.." He didn't or he used a slick way to evade or not mention the issue.

Certainly, I feel taken advantage of and have a bad taste in my mouth if anyone asks about this company and seeking to extract ASAP. Otherwise, the reps only do what they need to do to lure in customers and keep their jobs. And the excuse "Its because of demand" or Because of the economy .." if that's so then the rate should vary downward...like the economy...that is, respond back to the original price or below...it's only "fair". Is this review a farce?

I’m extremely disappointed with their pricing practices — it feels misleading at best. We were initially attracted by a low rate (around $70/month) and even paid for six months upfront. As soon as that period ended, the price suddenly jumped to about $160. That’s nearly double, with no changes or improvements whatsoever. Before this, we had already rented at a neighboring facility of the same company on Zebra Place (they literally share back walls), and the exact same pattern happened there: low introductory price followed by a sharp increase after a few months.

This doesn’t feel like a coincidence — it looks like a deliberate strategy to attract customers with low rates and then raise prices significantly once moving out becomes inconvenient. What’s even more frustrating is that right now, the Zebra Place location has similar units available for less than what we were charged after the increase. This kind of pricing policy feels highly unfair and non-transparent. I strongly recommend being very cautious and clarifying how and when prices may increase — otherwise you may end up with an unpleasant surprise.

Received a reminding text message of rental fees. It was a surprised new rate with additional $100/month without any advance notifications whatsoever in any format (email, text or call). After inquiring about the surprised demand with the manager, who subsequently admitted that there was no such notification sent in their database, Then the site manager simply stated that they will lock the unit out and potentially auction off the content if not paid in full of the demanded new rate without notification. It's a act of bullying the customer hoping to scam additional funds knowing the customers are on the hook. Unfair fraudulent business practice that has been a conmmon complaints with this company. They simply do not care about customer service and customer satisfaction.

Headline: WARNING: Dishonest Bait-and-Switch & Rude Management. Avoid this place at all costs. They are not honest. I saw an advertised price for a unit at $50 and spent over an hour on the phone with a representative to confirm it. I even PAID for the unit over the phone and cleared out my old storage space to move in. When I arrived, they refused to honor the $50 price I already paid and tried to force me into a $300 rate instead. When I asked them to give me the unit I had a reservation for, they completely ignored me and tried to send me to a different location miles away. The staff on-site was incredibly rude and unprofessional. When I asked to speak to a district manager to resolve the lie, they refused to help.

To make matters worse, it took 3 days just to get my refund back. They lure you in with fake prices, take your money, and then leave you stranded with your belongings and no unit. Save yourself the stress and go to a company with actual integrity. And I paid six months ahead so now I have to wait 3 to 4 days to go back onto my credit card. And when I called corporate, they were no help at all whatsoever so please if there’s anyone on here that could help reach out. Thank you.

The ruthless progression in price increases, justified by an allusion to "market" rates, is built-into the business model as is the tiny white post card sent by US mail that quietly announces it. This is an industry crying for government regulation. Good government is supposed to protect citizen-consumers but the matter was deflected by the elected local representatives that I contacted.

I rented a storage unit 5 x 7, in or around July 25, 2025, at the Mount Vernon, NY, location. The prices were decent. Off course, you need to pay insurance on your stored items. I was paying $92, from July 2025 until September 2025, and then I received a post card in the mail stating that the rates were going up to $102, each month. So, from October 2025 to March 2026, the fee was $102. It didn't go up too much from when I rented this storage facility, so I could handle the extra fee. I received another post card dated March 19, 2026, and the increase for the 5x7 storage unit went from $102 to $152. Mind you the insurance I pay is for a value of 5k which is $26.00. The new increase is $50. Too much for me to afford. So, I'll try another storage facility, for now and hopefully they don't increase over $50 or more.
