Not sure about the Bay Area but I am a customer at Extra Space Storage in Loomis California and they are aware of a rodent/mouse/rat infestation in customers units but REFUSE to compensate customers for the hours and hours they will have to spend standing in the rain cleaning mouse urine and feces off of their belongings. This seems to be a company wide policy so I would avoid ALL Extra Space Storage locations since the rot seems to come from corporate.
They have been aware of the mice infestation and rodent damage for weeks but have NOT alerted the customers in the vicinity to the fact that their belongings are now contaminated by urine and feces and possibly damaged from the mice. If you did not buy their insurance, well you are out of luck (though your rental agreement does say that they are not responsible except in cases of GROSS NEGLIGENCE which seems to be the case when they did not bother to even attempt to seal their units against the elements, with open gaps near the roofs to invite rodents in. They did not tell me when they knew of the infestation and they have even had to switch pest control companies due to lack of control of the situation.
With all of this the manager, Carla, was very helpful and seemed to want to make this right but unfortunately she did not have the authority, so her DTL Abby ** called me and told me that she wanted to have a pest control company treat my unit in depth so that I did not transfer the vermin to a different unit if I moved (I was interested in moving to the new type of units that they have which are not part of their poor quality buildings but separate pods that ARE designed to help keep your belongings safe from outside elements). Abby avoided making me an offer or deal on a different unit and when I pointed out that this clean up and having to move units is going to waste hours and hours of my time, Abby refused to comp a couple of months of rent to help offset my time loss.

It is the worst nightmare of ours to have used the service from Extra Space Storage Inc. and later dealt with the company’s rude and ignoring personnel/ staff regarding their unethical and likely illegal act of auction of our memorable and precious family items stored at one of the Extra Space Storage units at San Diego. Briefly, we have stored our family items since June, 2017 and been paying the annual fees regularly including the year of 2024-2025.
Astonishingly, when my husband went to the San Diego storage unit to check the items this July, the unit manager told him that all of our stored items had been auctioned in March since we did not pay the company for the year of 2024-2025 and they could not reach us by email or phone (which were not true at all). When my husband asked about more details, the manager’s attitude was rude and insisting that he would only discuss with me, the registrant, despite of my husband telling him that I had been a sick person living over in Taiwan.
Under this circumstance, we wrote letters outlining the incident in details and sent by emails to the officials of the company (Joseph Margolis jmargolis@extraspace.com and Gwyn McNeal (gwyn@extraspace.com) as well as by airmails to the company office at Utah, the Ethics Commission at San Diego, and the CA Attorney General. While the CA Attorney General Mr. Rob Bonta kindly responded and suggested us to take the legal approaches, no replies/ responses at all from any of the company officials and lawyers.
While we are still considering what actions we could/ should take in order to get at least some of our memorable/ precious family items back, we now write this open complaint on the website. Hopefully, it would alert the potential storage place-seekers so you don’t risk losing your memorable and precious family items by using the service from Extra Space Storage Inc.

They keep increasing the pricing, my friend rented a small unit for $68, then it became $137 after three months and $200 in five months and keep going for 5x10. There are many people that they are going through the same situation, and the manager and the company don't care. You put your belongings in the storage due to the life and financial situation or you will keep them. Shame on companies for taking advantage of people like that. They get you in with cheap prices and after a few months they start charging double. The explanation is that they can change rates at any time and due to comparable rates in the area, this is the reason for the increase. BUT, new units are still listed at the cheaper prices. Do not rent from them unless you know it's only for a few months.

I am filing this review after months of trying to get even the most basic accountability from this storage facility following a break-in that affected my unit. What I have experienced is not an isolated incident; the Google reviews over multiple years show a consistent pattern: repeated break-ins, zero follow-up, and customers left with no support. In my case, the facility mishandled every step of the process. I was hung up on, my calls were ignored, and despite reaching out multiple times, I received no answers by email because they refuse to communicate in writing at all. This prevents any paper trail and feels intentional, not procedural.
To make matters worse, they continued to charge me monthly even after the break-in, without providing documentation of the incident or any resolution pathway. The only “official” communication I ever received was a combined first and final notice and even that came with no context, no explanation, and no follow-up. No incident report. No next steps. No attempt to make things right.
Every time I tried to get clarity, I was met with avoidance and blame-shifting. Their go-to line is “store at your own risk,” which they use to shut down any conversation about their responsibilities despite failing to provide basic security, transparency, or communication. That phrase does not excuse negligence, nor does it justify charging customers after their units have been breached. Combined with the long trail of similar complaints of break ins online, this starts to feel less like disorganization and more like a systematic pattern: customers bear all the risk, the facility takes no responsibility, and when something goes wrong, they go silent.
I’m filing this review to warn other consumers and to create a documented record, because no paying customer should have to chase down a business for months after a break-in especially while still being billed for a compromised unit. I hope Consumer Affairs thoroughly investigates this company’s practices. There are multiple reviews that look inflated and fake that seem to bury the complaints and warnings of break-ins similar to mine at this specific location.

I was switched to normal size minus pole. I also had to ask for unit easy to find not in labyrinth with zero maps or direction, which should be fine since endless units were free. 3 months later the fee doubled, even after I called, as manager promised would be lower to starting fee, they lied and charged me 108, then as of now want 208 for storage fee when the internet page literally says zero of that fee and highest charge for my size unit is 108.
I have called customer care since other manager and employees don't answer phone or return calls, also manager said he would work with me but my attitude. Customer care said the rent would be 178. Monthly with a free month for Nov. I have auto pay and now Oct to Nov I was charged late fee, I now paid 258 for the month!! No free month for Nov 22 on they now want 54.00!! There's no manager to speak to, I asked for email of offer when spoke to customer care and was told they don't do that!!
The parking lot has giant pot holes, the storage is covered in garage and giant cracks, zero labels or maps to find your way and the security door endlessly is stuck open, to match there are large amounts of unrented units. These people lie, bait and switch, claim no responsible paid manager/employees can help you, no receipts and customer care is a blatant lie, outsourced, yes people to quiet your needs questions and anger. DO NOT FALL FOR ADVERTISED PRICING! Every person I dealt with is friendly and helpful. The facility is clean and feels safe. HOWEVER - their pricing policies are predatory. I rented space there this past February - the advertised price was approximately $70-75/month, which I learned was for a unit including stairs and without climate control. I wasn’t happy with the price of $110/month an acceptable unit ACTUALLY was, but I believe the person I was speaking to, when he told me it would be worth it because THIS WAS NOT A PROMO PRICE and therefore wouldn't go up automatically in three months like most of the deals out there.
Three months later, I received a notice that the price was going up to $210/month. I was absolutely horrified. I went to the agreement and while there was no mention of the $110 being a promo price, there was language stating that they could raise it any time with at least 30 days notice. I should have moved out then, but the reason these things were in storage involves a lot of stress in my life so I simply started paying the higher price on the fourth month. I never expected to need the storage this long, so I decided recently that I would move to a smaller unit and get some help to move everything and if we could not fit all of it with super efficient organization, make the tough decisions about what to get rid of.
As I was planning for this, I got another card in the mail informing me it was going up ANOTHER $100/MONTH! Only nine months after moving in and only six months after the last increase. THEY RAISED THE PRICE BY 182% - ALMOST TRIPLED IT in nine months. I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN - and my suggestion is that you make sure to negotiate a contract that locks in your pricing and has a structure for less than usurious increases in the future.

I would strongly recommend anyone who is entertaining the idea as a potential customer to look elsewhere, as this company is untrustworthy, and uses a promotional rate to get people in the door before they prey on them. To rate my experience with 1 star is not accurate, as it is necessary to submit at least one. Not even deserving of that. Extremely disappointed. I rented what was advertised online as a 10x18 unit with double doors at Extra Space Storage, but when I arrived, I found out it was actually two separate units—one 10x10 and one 10x8—not connected at all. After trying to move in and realizing my larger furniture didn’t fit, I measured the spaces myself. The actual sizes were only about 9x9 and 9x6.5, totaling around 140 square feet instead of the 180 sq. ft. I was charged for.
When I complained, they offered a refund—but only after most of my heavy furniture was already moved in. Extremely unprofessional and misleading operation. I’m warning anyone thinking of renting from Extra Space Storage in Irvington, NJ. This company operates on the very definition of bait and switch. You’d think a newer location would want to build trust and keep customers, but instead they pull stunts like this. I signed up for a unit at what I thought was a fair, clearly listed price. Nowhere did it say “promotional," it was simply the price shown on their website. But after just four months, they more than doubled my rent. Not a $10 or $15 increase like you might expect in this industry. They literally over-doubled it into the triple digits.
When I asked why, I was told my original rate was a “promotion” that had expired. That’s funny, because it was never labeled as one. Not online, not in my contract, nowhere. Just a convenient excuse to hike prices once you’re already locked in and all your belongings are stored. To make matters worse, if you fall behind, they won’t even let you pay just the past-due balance to catch up. They say they can't accept partial payments and demand you pay the past-due plus the current month or threaten to tack on legal fees and auction your belongings. It’s a total shakedown! I've never dealt with larger scammers.
This company preys on trust and convenience, knowing it’s a hassle to move out once you’re in. It’s greedy, deceptive, and flat-out unethical. Save yourself the stress and go anywhere else. Extra Space Storage is anything but “extra” unless we’re talking about extra fees, extra lies, and extra headaches. You've been warned.

This company does their unit inspections with a company named ServPro, which is a company that almost LITERALLY hires anyone without doing a professional evaluation in the persons that are working for their own company. (They will open your unit without any prior communication, meaning they won't TELL you they are "inspecting" your unit beforehand). N Beacon Street, Boston location: Fabulous experience! Jen, the manager, is at the top of her game and this has made all the difference. She is clearly professional, highly organized and genuinely concerned about customer service. The day we arrived to finalize our online reservation the loading bay and office were bustling. Jen was calm and efficient, aware of order of customer arrivals and she managed to address all client needs in an organized manner. Several clients knew her by name and all were well pleased with their service on this busy day. Jen was incredibly pleasant throughout.
When we had a glitch with our entry code Jen kept a close eye on our progress via camera/ intercom and came directly to the back bay door once it was clear the issue required more intervention and made sure it was resolved before we left. Incredible! Unit, hallways and bathrooms were spotless and dollies always available at loading bay each time we came. Upon arrival the staff was really friendly and very informative. So informative that he advised me that I would get a postcard in the mail advising me of rate increases periodically (red Flag). That was telling me that they would just be raising rates for profit not because of inflation or higher cost. Postcards, people have tendency not to look at post card junk mails in a time when emails and text can be used for communication (red flag). They offered a flash sale for $43 dollars but I paid $78.00 and the Next month would have been $49.00. The staff tried to convince me of the math but I completed 2nd grade math so No. Then after a week I had to go back to the office and give them a copy of my title and insurance, so much for the easy on line check in.
I was told I could close my account and move my RV whenever I got a postcard to avoid getting my rates increased (:red flag), That's convince right there (sarcasm). Needless to say, I have opted to move to another storage place that $86 and they say $86, you pay 86 and they don't send postcards. I looked at the reviews on their site and they get all 5 stars, but on a consumer affairs site the star rating is 2??? 5/2024-10/2024 - $220 (originally $244)
10/2025-7/2025 - $309
8/2025 - $389
So in a year and a half my rent has gone from $185 to $389. That's a 110% increase in that time, more than double ($370 would be double). If you plan on renting from this place plan to pay more than twice as much if you plan on being there long term. This place is run by a bunch of scammers and scumbags. "Raise rates based on market conditions" is a bunch of BS. They lure you in with a good rate then stick it to you without any lube. I found an enclosed unit elsewhere and even if they double their rate it'll still be less than these dirtbags. Notice the good reviews are from people that haven't been there that long. Go back six months and you'll start seeing the reviews about rate hikes. If they want to reach out to me and try to fix it maybe I'll reconsider but right now I will be taking the steps to find an alternative storage unit and they will be making $0 on an empty storage unit.
Oct 2024 - Well, it happened again. I went to update my auto payment and noticed my monthly rent is now $309, a jump from $220. Almost $100 increase and no "30 day written notice" in the mail. So in less than a year (so far) my rent has gone from $185/mo to $309, a 67% increase. I see they are an "Accredited Business" on the Better Business Bureau so I think it's about time to file a complaint with them at this point.
May 2024 - They raised my rate to $244 but someone from the facility I rent from called me earlier this week and lowered the rent to $220 so the price is a little bit better. She said that Corporate are the ones who send out the notices and decide when and how much to raise the rent. I can understand that after working for a few corporations myself. She was very nice and helpful and I am grateful that she was willing to do what she could. So I will continue renting from them.
April 2024 - Well, I have to change my rating. I just received in the mail a notice, after renting from them for 3 months, that my rate will be increasing to $244, a more than 30% increase in price. I can understand 5%-10% a year or something like that but 30% is unreasonable. They lure you in with a good price then stick it to you a couple months later. Seems to be common practice for storage rental companies Renter beware. Their customer service and employees are still great, but their business practices are terrible.
Mar 2024 - Nice and clean. Good access hours and pricing is good compared to other places. I was renting a 10x30 from Public Storage and they raised my rent from $247/Mo to $333 after 3 months, nearly 35% increase. So I decided to move to Life Storage for a 10x20 for $185/mo. Their employees were friendly and professional.

I was shocked and horrified at the state of my storage unit. Every surface was covered in mouse droppings. I don't mean a poop here or there. I mean COVERED. Literally COVERED. Some of my furniture had sheets over it for protection. We threw away 27 sheets and other furniture covers because they were covered in rodent droppings. We went and bought gloves and Clorox wipes to work in the unit because it felt unsafe. We wondered if we should be wearing masks to not breathe it. That much rodent excrement is bad for you. There were rodent nests in the stored boxes, in my sofa, in the rugs. No upholstered furniture in the unit can be used again. It will need to be reupholstered, and not only reupholstered but have the stuffing replaced. If these weren't family furniture pieces I inherited, they would be trashed. The rugs will have to go through an expensive cleaning process to be used again, and it is unclear if they can be used at all.
There had clearly been moisture or water of some sort in the unit. There was mildew on the wood furniture and there was mildew in some of the cardboard boxes and all over the contents. The contents of several boxes was thrown out for mildew. This was not at all what I expected to find in my unit. I was crushed at the loss of items, disgusted at the condition of my things, and mad that I have paid for climate controlled storage and it seemed to not have been controlled at all, and that to use any of my things in that unit again I will have to pay a lot of money to have them cleaned and repaired.

Disappointed Since the Change in Management. I’ve been renting at this location since it was CubeSmart, and the difference in quality and service since Extra Space Storage took over is extremely disappointing. When it was CubeSmart, the facility was immaculate — well-maintained, secure, and truly climate-controlled. However, since Extra Space took over, the decline has been obvious. The main entry door has been broken since the second week of April, and as of now, still hasn’t been repaired. This completely undermines the promise of “climate control,” which is critical for protecting valuable and sensitive items. Controlling temperature and humidity is not a luxury — it’s the reason we pay a premium for these units.
To make matters worse, pricing continues to increase, despite the reduced quality and failure to maintain basic standards. It’s unacceptable to raise rates while ignoring essential repairs and compromising the conditions renters were promised when they signed up. At this point, a full inspection of the facility needs to happen, and renters who were here prior to the April management shift deserve monetary compensation for being misled and left with substandard service. We are being charged for a service that is simply not being delivered. This facility needs accountability — and quickly.

Three months later our rent was increased not by a little, but a significant amount. That ended our time at Extra Space. We do what to acknowledge Rissa Rogers, District Team Leader. The business model is to get you in at a low price ($44 in my case) and, because Maryland offers no consumer protection, raise the price assuming you have no choice but to pay it. I moved abroad and now I am being victimized by frequent increases in the price. What choice do I have. What choice does anyone who uses this kind of facility have. There should be protection that limits the frequency and amount of increases.

Murray/Scholls location has rats. My three units in buildings C, D and E were all destroyed by rats. I had several thousands of dollars of belongings destroyed by rats. I contacted management who took photos and proceeded to give me the insurance information. I asked to speak with the district manager and then the regional manager only to be stonewalled at the district level. It took 9-days for anyone in upper management to call me and when she did (Crystal S) she was incredibly rude, dismissive and accusatory. Probably the worst person I have ever spoken with and she clearly didn’t care about one of her sites. No one wanted to acknowledge a potential rat infestation at this facility nor help with compensation. I had to hire a biohazard company to sort through my things, sanitize what could be saved and dump the rest. I had to hire movers to remove my belongings.
I asked several times, for acknowledgment of my attempt to escalate this issue to corporate and I was met with silence. I have photos and video as of several of the buildings on site showing rat feces in the hallways. The units are not secure from neighboring units meaning the rats can easily travel between units. I highly suspect that several people's units have been impacted and no one in management is alerting them. They are trying to silence this issue. This has been a nightmare emotionally and financially and it’s crickets from corporate. Stay away from this business.

My husband and I rented a storage unit. The cost with being senior citizens was 76.00. The lady who initially took our information had it all screwed up. My husband's info, both of our emails, and I received the bills, along with making the payments. We NEVER received a call, text message, email, nor a letter about the change in cost. Only being there 4 months, and never late, it went up to 111.00 a month. I called and complained. The lady told me that she could do a 1 time payment of 72.00, I was fine. I then called and asked for a quote for a new storage unit. They quoted 72.00 a month. I then called and stated what I had just found out. I then gave them a 30 Day notice. I was going to be out by June 10th.
I gave a review, telling people to be careful. I received a pm from the company, wanting to resolve this issue. I stated, I WILL NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SHADY PEOPLE! I then called to let the company know that we had definitely moved out. Only to get a runaround on the phone. Finally spoke to a human being. He said that everything was good on my part, and apologized for the problems we endured. He said that someone would go through and check the storage unit that week. (Mind you, I have pictures of how clean it was when we left.)
I got a bill on the 11th stating we have a due amount of 111.00 once again. I called and they said to disregard it. I just checked again, and it was still there. I called, and was told it is now 134.00 and it is past due. I just got off the phone and they have NOT sent anyone over to check it. The lady said that they would, and then I should receive a follow up call from them. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!! DO NOT RENT FROM THEM!!! This company is scandalous! DO NOT!… I repeat DO NOT Store anything with Extra Space Storage. Do yourself a favor and find a company that will be more professional and honest in the way they do business. This was a nice place long before they put that Green sign up. No points scored for their tidiness it was already that way. I've had this unit for over 2 years and now pay 50% more for the unit than when it was the previous company. Extra Extortion has had 2 price hikes within the last 6 months. I understand increases but this is High Way Robbery. What is the slang highway robbery?: The practice of charging a price that is very high and usually unfair for something. Especially after there was an initial agreement. I think a class action lawsuit will soon be in the making.
Extra Space is more like Extra Extortion. I'm starting to wonder if they have other motives for fleecing people who can no longer afford to store out of their property due to price increases. What's really going on? I've been lied to and treated as an insignificant customer by staff with terrible attitudes as though they are debt collectors. The phone operators are even worse with condescending tones and "Too Bad So Sad" attitudes and non caring demeanor. I've been treated better at the IRS. I will never use this swindling scam of a company ever again and am glad to have paid my last payment for their abuse. I recommend that no one else who cares about their property or being treated like a human being do so either.
Either they are too big to care for their customer base or they are greedy. Greedy gets my vote. There are far too many other storage companies for smart to use, that have far better reputations and aren't out to scam you out of your hard earned money or property. The office to the location I used isn't even open every day. When you call in to the corporate office they have to submit a "ticket" therefore, if you have a problem or complaint it takes 48 hours to get any kind of assistance so if you have any pressing matters… Forget about IT! This company is trash and if you love being railroaded and treated like the only thing that matters is them increasing the cost whenever the wind blows and laughing about it, then be my guest. Last Time....DO NOT Store anything with Extra Space Storage. You have been Warned

I originally started renting from “Life Storage” back in 2016 for a larger climate controlled unit. It was a little over $100 per month. The facility was clean and the customer service was awesome. I cannot exactly remember when “Extra Space” took over the units, but ever since then it has been HELL! The cleanliness, buildings/facilities, and driveways are so rundown. You can tell where areas of the ceiling have been leaking into the walkways. There was one customer service agent that was extremely helpful, but the rest lack any sort of compassion or empathy.
The rates have almost tripled to $286/month. You pay extra for insurance, but not sure exactly what it covers, in the event you have any kind of family emergency and can’t pay for a month or so, they will hit you with a ton of ridiculous fees almost doubling your bill to even access your unit. I’m not sure if they even want people to rent from them anymore at this rate. Charging as much as they do for that location compared to others in the area is astronomical. I am moving my stuff out of Extra Space and I am never renting from them again. I do not recommend this company.

I have been dealing with Extra Space since April 11th, 2025. I rented the unit short-term. I called the 800 number to initially reserve the unit and had to finish in person at the Englewood Ohio location. Dominique is the site manager for that facility. The unit she gave me was not what I reserved but we made it work since it was short-term. I was in and out of the unit multiple times and the manager was rarely there. On April 4th, I notified Dominque that I was vacating before the end of the month. She said that was fine but I would not receive a refund. As I have said, I was moving out as much of the small items that I could until I have my business ready for my big equipment.
On April 11th, Dominique sent me a text that my unit was up for auction. I was in the unit at the time of the text and she was not in the office. When I responded back that it must be a mistake she responded “my bad”. Well, apparently she did sell my unit but offered to sell it back to me but I had to bring her cash money at 5:30 pm on the dot on April 16th. She made that agreement with a local police officer. So we showed up and she wasn’t there. I made calls, my attorney made calls and then on Friday, April 18th, a person named Colin called and said I had until end of day on the 19th of April to accept a deal of $160 and then I would have 48 hours to clear my unit.
On the 19th, I told Colin that we would take that deal and would be on our way to pay Dominque, to which he informed me I had to meet him at some gas station in Indiana with cash money alone. I told him that I would not be doing that that we were already en route to Englewood Ohio location. We arrived and the door to the office was locked. Colin informed me that because I refused to obey the rules, he sold my unit. I from the time this started, informed them that my mother’s ashes were in the unit. Colin informed me “mommy is in the trash now **”. I have called countless “corporate” employees all of which tell me they have instructed Dominque to make this right.
I served Dominique a notice for intent to sue. It was emailed to the CEO and it will be delivered via certified mail to all parties as well. Since doing that Dominque has had me trespassed from the property, even though being at the unit on the 11th of April was the last time I was there besides serving the notice to sue letter.I have taken to posting on social media and will continue to do so until the matter is settled. The fact that this company feels that they are above the law and can do whatever they want is mind-blowing. Even if my unit was up for auction, they have to serve me papers to do so and provide a link to the online auction. I was in the unit on the 11th of April, so it was not even overlocked then. They made a mistake and instead of doing the right thing, they are literally hindering me from opening my business.
Their corporate headquarters is a mess all of the people I have spoken to have said that the facilities are third-party owned and operated and that means they won’t get involved but Dominque says I have to talk to her corporate lawyers. This is sad at the very least, my mother’s ashes could have been returned to me.When I was first getting the unit, the customer service person told me how Dominic was a great guy and I couldn't ask for a better site manager, the fact that he and corporate don’t even know Dominique is a woman is sad. I have had to stand up for her and correct them multiple times. The derogatory names they have called her is disgusting. The fact that corporate keeps saying that Dominique and now Colin have to fix this, not them, is bad business and this company operates in bad faith. Trespassing me is hilarious… I will not go away.
WHERE IS MY MOTHER? THIS IS DISGUSTING AND DISTURBING WAY FOR A COMPANY TO CONDUCT BUSINESS… This company has multiple lawsuits against them. I never thought I needed to vet a storage facility. They ask you for a detailed inventory of your unit as you are reserving the unit. They want that list so they can sell your stuff.

I should have researched this company more before I rented a storage unit from them, because when I did research them after the doubling of my storage rent, I found out they had been sued for bait and switch tactics in 2019. They didn't even wait 6 months, I had assumed I was good for 12 months, but had unknowingly signed a month to month agreement, allowing them to increase my rent to whatever they wanted, at any time, if I had read the fine print I would never have rented a storage unit from them, it's almost criminal. A lot of people lose all their possessions because they can't afford to pay the increase. This company is so full of corporate greed, they need to be shut down, and the people they have overcharged need to be paid back in full. Also, the people who lost all their possessions need to be reimbursed.

They went ahead and charged our credit card without even speaking to us. I called and was told that new management decided to hike rates. They apparently sent out "postcards" (a not so direct way to reach people). I asked why not an email? They said that would have been too cost effective. What?? Moving is hectic enough without dealing with storage issues. When we first rented 4 months ago, the unit we received was on the 2nd floor and access was by freight elevator. We tried moving a few small boxes into it the first day. The elevator was jerky and did not feel safe. My husband and I are in our 70s plus he is a physically disabled war veteran that uses a cane and has poor balance. Since office had closed for the day, the next day we went back and asked for a unit that would not require the freight elevator. Our next unit was easier access except there is no way to keep the door from closing and locking while unloading a moving truck so I had to stand there to trigger the sensor for the movers. Annoying but not the worst that could happen.
Our movers could not fit everything in that unit so we ended up renting a small unit for some boxes. It started at $11 and is now $22. Our large unit went from $124 to $200. I asked about the increase and they said a post card was mailed to notify us about increase. We did not receive it, probably lost in the mail. Of course they have our email and phone number for texts that would have been better. But even if I had received the post card there is nothing I could do about it. I am too far away to get the things moved plus I would have to hire a moving company. So, trapped for them to charge whatever they want just because they send a post card to notify.

If I could give zero stars, I would! I was with Life Storage before Extra Space took over, and this is by far one of the worst storage facilities to rent from. My rate increased every few months, and if you’re late on a payment, they immediately push you into foreclosure—tacking on an extra $120 plus late fees. They offer no payment plans or flexibility, even for long-term customers. Terrible service and unfair pricing!

I've rented a unit for almost four years. I understand businesses have to raise their rates in order to pay their bills and make a profit. In Sept 2024 there was a small rise. Starting March 2025 there's an increase of roughly $70. No new lease is signed, only a postcard stating the increase. I have a 10x20 unit and I just paid over $260. Last month it was $187 including the insurance that's mandatory of $11. A new unit of the same size would cost a new customer less than $150 a month. This is how they treat current customers. Price them out of their units so they either have to move to a different company, or people lose their belongings so the company can sell them. I wish I had the means to take my stuff somewhere else. Between bills and lack of people to help, I just can't. One of the months in my included picture is higher because I was late with my payment so there was an additional fee.

I called them and the rep said he would drop it down to 129.00 per month but he did not tell me that did not include the insurance so that brought my payment to 155.00. Extra Space Storage in Milford is a total scam and ripoff. I was a customer for over 10 years always paying on time. The amount I paid them with their ridiculous increases is crazy but they figure once you are in, they’ve got you. I had a security breach on my Apple Pay. I spoke with them on Monday Feb 3, and told them my new card would arrive by Thurs and would call back for payment. No problem was mentioned with that. Apparently my augment was due by 2/5/25 to avoid the late fee, which the rep did not tell me. So, they charged me a $95 late fee.
Erica- supposedly a district manager- would not stand behind the info I was given (or lack of) by their employee and said it is impossible to waive late fee. She was rude and inflexible. Horrible customer service and business practices. I am emptying units (I have 2) and taking my business elsewhere. Don’t store with them, try self-storage or Cube-Smart. Just a bait and switch operation. The 10X10s were standard door instead of roll up so harder to get stuff in and out. Door hardware for the lock was undersized so regular locks wouldn't fit and laughably insecure. Cheap interior wood framing instead of steel. Then after all of their promises of fair pricing and treating customers right they hit me with a $100 increase on my large unit and a $40 increase on my small unit. The overhead is very minimal in this industry but they still price gouge you like this because they know we have no protection. This is the most unfair price increased I have ever seen in storage. They have one person that watches that lot 4 days a week. What is it that cost so much extra? Why was this increase so big and how can they get away with it. After almost two weeks later I returned and to my surprise my storage had a different lock than the one I had placed after making a report at the office they removed the lock and to my surprise, they had stolen my belongings. They took everything, they left me without clothes, shoes, electrical appliances. In short the list is too long and now they tell me that they are not responsible because I did not have insurance?
Now how do I explain that they robbed me if there is a code to enter and there are no cameras behind me, and no one has to find out that I did not have insurance, I refused to pay that month waiting for a response from them, which to this day I do not have, and they also took away my access to enter and put another lock so that I could not open it, and the person who works there as customer service is too racist just because my English is quite limited, anyway, I still have this problem, I already made a police report, I do not recommend that place to anyone.

I rented from Extra Space Storage (ESS) a few months ago when our driveway/garage were being replaced in order to store a car. We used the facility for about 3 weeks and terminated the contract. Prior to committing to a rental online and learning (on the website) of a 1/2 off first month's rent promotion, I called their customer service number. I wanted to know if I would still receive 1/2 of my first month if I only rented for 1 month. I was told "yes." When I set up the rental online there was no mention of 1/2 off my quoted rate and my credit card was charged what appeared to be the full rate (about $205/mo). I wanted to secure my storage unit and figured discounts could be applied after I 'moved out.' Any online discount or "half off" was not made evident. I inquired about what appeared to be my "full charges" when I collected my vehicle.
The person in the office could not explain why it did not appear that there had been a discount applied despite the prominent 1/2 off disclosures, told me their prices had moved around a lot over time, and there "could have been an online promotion!?" After 3 more calls to customer service and no action on the part of ESS, I was told via voicemail that there was likely some kind of online promotion - at that time - and that the 1/2 off was only for direct storage orders from ESS. If I had contacted them directly the 1/2 off would have applied. Nobody during my initial call or any of my 3 subsequent calls had made this clear.
The alleged online discounts compared to the very prominent 1/2 off first month's rent on the website did not clearly disclose the requirements for each. And, please note the monthly rate did not include an administrative fee and an overpriced, required lock. IMO, the pricing disclosures and policies of ESS are misleading, not comprehensive, unstable, and opportunistic. I doubt I will ever rent from ESS again in the future.

I booked a 10X10 unit on-line. A gentleman called me. He set everything up. Promised me my price would never change from 52 dollars a monthly. Even paid a couple of months ahead. I ended up going to jail on a charge I did not commit. Sent 2 months. My son was said he paid my storage. Everything was fine. I get out to being 2 months behind so I get caught up. I make the payment because EVERYTHING I OWN is sitting in this storage unit. They said I owe 398. I didn't think nothing of it because of late fees so I got the money together and take it up there because I needed clothes to change into so I pay them 398 just so Ashley lady in the office to look me in the eye and say, "You still owe 292 dollars." I said, "Excuse me?" She says, "Yeah it went into auction mode..."
I thought after the 3rd month it goes in auction mode so by this time I'm thinking 52 dollars a month, only behind 2 months is now costing me almost 6 hundred dollars. I needed someone anyone to help me make sense of what this lady was doing to me so I called the corporate and was asking questions that no one could answer so they said the district manager will call me in 48 hour after the weekend. Well I get the 3 hundred, take it down, I am able to get in. Well a couple of months goes by my son calls me, ask me for the combination. I say no. I don't trust my son. He goes to the front office which it's only my name on the lease and Ashley grinds my lock off for my son so I come, no locks. I open my unit. It's a whole mess.
I call the office. I said, "Hi Ashley. This is Terri **, unit **. Can you check the cameras because my unit was broke into?" She said, "Do you know what time this may have happened?" Now at same time I'm messaging my son threatening to call sheriff for breaking and entering. He sends me a pic of Ashley lady works in the office grinding my lock off of my unit for my son. He literally took EVERYTHING THAT MEANT ANYTHING TO ME OR HAD VALUE because I buy and sell stuff and I collect unique things. Well I ended up getting stuck there until someone could bring me a lock but the next day I called Ashley and asked why she never returned my call. She said she didn't see anything on video about who broke in my unit so yet again I call the corporate office, make a complaint. They say, "The district manager will call you in 48 hours," so I wait.
I continue going through making an inventory on EVERYTHING I notice is missing. Well where my unit sits the sun beams in on me. I am allergic to the sun so I lower my door and the lady up front that works with Ashley comes yelling at me for my door being down and I'm not allowed hanging out in the unit. I said lady right now I would not be coming at me sideways. I explained what happened. She said, "Oh you need a lock?" I said, "Out of everything I just said you only heard the lock part." So I get back on the phone and call the corporate office and let them know why I'm there, why I have the door lowered and ask why I haven't heard from the district manager.
A week goes by and Ashley calls me and says, "We are not renewing your lease. You were on the premises after hours. We have you on camera." I said, "You damn right. It was you cut my lock. I had no way to lock my unit so I sat until someone was able to bring me a lock," so I am no longer there, got robbed and still have not been able to speak to anyone. Worse experience I have ever. Never again will I rent from Extra Space or Life Storage. Same company. If you are reading this take your business anywhere else but here.

There's no way to reach anyone by phone other than the flunkie at the front desk, who sleeps for much of their day shift (!), and no way to resolve any disputes, getting the runaround a whole lot of word salad, with no refund or remedy. On top of the increase, the facility's front gate has been inoperable in the open position for more than a week, with interior doors off their hinges, and climate control spotty. I strongly advise anyone considering renting at Extra Space Storage in Doraville to think twice. My experience with this facility has been incredibly frustrating due to their arbitrary rate increases and lack of transparency. When we first rented our unit, there was no indication—either on their website or during the leasing process—that the rates would change after only a couple of months. Yet, in under 6 months, our rent was increased by nearly $100, with no prior notice. In fact we only found out when we received a postcard on October 27th, that told us our rate was increased on October 3rd. When we called the store manager they stated that their system said it was mailed out in prior to the increase, and they have tracking saying something was delivered but could not provide us with that tracking information.
This seems to be a common practice at this location, as I’ve found numerous reviews from others who’ve experienced the same sudden rate hikes. What’s even more infuriating is that Extra Space is currently advertising units for $100 less than what we’re now paying, as long as you commit to a stay of four months or more. This bait-and-switch tactic is extremely unethical. When I called to discuss the issue, the assistant manager was not only unhelpful but also rude and condescending. She brushed off my concerns and simply said the site manager would call when they had time. This lack of professionalism, combined with their shady pricing tactics, has led us to make the decision to vacate our unit—incurring additional expenses in the process.
If you’re considering renting from Extra Space Storage, save yourself the headache and find a more reputable facility. Their deceptive pricing and poor customer service are not worth the hassle. This is beyond frustrating as me and my company have been loyal ExtraSpace customers for years, and to see this type of deception and service is not acceptable.

In just over a year the Storage rental rate went up by over $100 per month. We are out of state so we are pretty much hostages until we can get back to Arizona to make other arrangements for our stuff.

It is ridiculous that after three months, they already want to raise the rent. They take advantage of the fact that clients have stored their belongings. This is neither professional nor ethical. They are criminals disguised as lambs.

After nearly a year, extending every opportunity for Extra Space to do the right thing, like cooperate with my insurance company/refund money they took under contract to keep my belongings stored securely, I reluctantly write this unfavorable review as a direct result of deep disappointment. My storage unit with about $13,000 worth of belongings was burglarized in January 2024, using a method known by Extra Space to defeat Extra Space registration safeguards; The burglars are able to anonymously register for a unit, gain entry, and burglarize several adjacent rented storage units. Extra Space Storage is aware of this method and has been for some years and taken no measures to abate it.
The day after the burglary, Extra Space notified me that my unit was burglarized and I canceled the contract. Extra Space did not refund my money. Rather they cited the insurance - the insurance from them maxes out at $2000. My advice is not to take your belongings to Extra Space Storage, but if you do, do not store more than $2000 worth of your belongings.
Exacerbating the problem is Extra Space not cooperating with my renter's insurance company. It has been nearly a year, and Progressive is unable to get a return call to verify what was already paid out. You see, Progressive also doesn’t want to pay if Extra Space already paid to cover some items, so I am out the money spent to secure the belongings, I’m also out the money represented by the belongings that were stolen, and I am effectively out the money paid for insurance to offset such losses. All in all some $20,000 as a result of choosing Extra Space Storage.
Before writing this review, I gave them one more opportunity to make things right, but they simply pointed me to the insurance company they partner with, which maxes out payout at 2k. They have no intention of refunding the money, about 6k nor any part of those payments, which they wrongfully have kept under contract to keep my belongings secure. Worse, Extra Space demonstrates an unwillingness to cooperate with my insurance company, so that I could be made whole following their negligence. I recommend against choosing this company to store your belongings.

I've rented a unit at Extra Space Storage in Souderton, PA, for about the past five years. Every time I've asked for help, the staff there have done their very best to help me. They keep the property clean and working well, and they're friendly too. I think the world of them, and I'm a very happy customer of Extra Space Storage in Souderton.

Rate increase ridiculous. Worst storage company ever. Will never use again. Customer service was very much needed but was lacking. Will I recommend this company? No, I will recommend that they did not use this company.

I have had my things in Extra Space Storage since I came to Florida in 2018. Over time my things started to disappear. I finally got it out in Sept. of this year. I got all my things out. Now the manager put a few bags inside the unit stating I forgot the bags there and is billing me for the bags. DO NOT USE EXTRA SPACE. They are a SCAM. From Chris **.
