Due to erratic changes in the US economy specifically for federal employees of a certain color, I had to relocate suddenly from a home, heard about Extra Space, sorted n stored my belongings believing I would extract those shortly, however, unbeknownst to me, after 4 months I found my rate to increase 80%. I inquired about this as it seemed another unusual promotional bait and switch by the exorbitant price increase. The rep said, "I told you.." He didn't or he used a slick way to evade or not mention the issue.
Certainly, I feel taken advantage of and have a bad taste in my mouth if anyone asks about this company and seeking to extract ASAP. Otherwise, the reps only do what they need to do to lure in customers and keep their jobs. And the excuse "Its because of demand" or Because of the economy .." if that's so then the rate should vary downward...like the economy...that is, respond back to the original price or below...it's only "fair". Is this review a farce?

I’m extremely disappointed with their pricing practices — it feels misleading at best. We were initially attracted by a low rate (around $70/month) and even paid for six months upfront. As soon as that period ended, the price suddenly jumped to about $160. That’s nearly double, with no changes or improvements whatsoever. Before this, we had already rented at a neighboring facility of the same company on Zebra Place (they literally share back walls), and the exact same pattern happened there: low introductory price followed by a sharp increase after a few months.
This doesn’t feel like a coincidence — it looks like a deliberate strategy to attract customers with low rates and then raise prices significantly once moving out becomes inconvenient. What’s even more frustrating is that right now, the Zebra Place location has similar units available for less than what we were charged after the increase. This kind of pricing policy feels highly unfair and non-transparent. I strongly recommend being very cautious and clarifying how and when prices may increase — otherwise you may end up with an unpleasant surprise.

Received a reminding text message of rental fees. It was a surprised new rate with additional $100/month without any advance notifications whatsoever in any format (email, text or call). After inquiring about the surprised demand with the manager, who subsequently admitted that there was no such notification sent in their database, Then the site manager simply stated that they will lock the unit out and potentially auction off the content if not paid in full of the demanded new rate without notification. It's a act of bullying the customer hoping to scam additional funds knowing the customers are on the hook. Unfair fraudulent business practice that has been a conmmon complaints with this company. They simply do not care about customer service and customer satisfaction.

Headline: WARNING: Dishonest Bait-and-Switch & Rude Management. Avoid this place at all costs. They are not honest. I saw an advertised price for a unit at $50 and spent over an hour on the phone with a representative to confirm it. I even PAID for the unit over the phone and cleared out my old storage space to move in. When I arrived, they refused to honor the $50 price I already paid and tried to force me into a $300 rate instead. When I asked them to give me the unit I had a reservation for, they completely ignored me and tried to send me to a different location miles away. The staff on-site was incredibly rude and unprofessional. When I asked to speak to a district manager to resolve the lie, they refused to help.
To make matters worse, it took 3 days just to get my refund back. They lure you in with fake prices, take your money, and then leave you stranded with your belongings and no unit. Save yourself the stress and go to a company with actual integrity. And I paid six months ahead so now I have to wait 3 to 4 days to go back onto my credit card. And when I called corporate, they were no help at all whatsoever so please if there’s anyone on here that could help reach out. Thank you.

$94.40. $158.05. $253.05. The price jumps listed above spanned only 15 months. The clickbait, $94.40 monthly, was switched after 3 months, to $158.05, ballooning to $253.05 after 15 months. The ruthless progression in price increases, justified by an allusion to "market" rates, is built-into the business model as is the tiny white post card sent by US mail that quietly announces it. This is an industry crying for government regulation. Good government is supposed to protect citizen-consumers but the matter was deflected by the elected local representatives that I contacted.

I rented a storage unit 5 x 7, in or around July 25, 2025, at the Mount Vernon, NY, location. The prices were decent. Off course, you need to pay insurance on your stored items. I was paying $92, from July 2025 until September 2025, and then I received a post card in the mail stating that the rates were going up to $102, each month. So, from October 2025 to March 2026, the fee was $102. It didn't go up too much from when I rented this storage facility, so I could handle the extra fee. I received another post card dated March 19, 2026, and the increase for the 5x7 storage unit went from $102 to $152. Mind you the insurance I pay is for a value of 5k which is $26.00. The new increase is $50. Too much for me to afford. So, I'll try another storage facility, for now and hopefully they don't increase over $50 or more.

This place is a disgrace. No one would work with me. I was hospitalized in and out for over 14 months and they kept adding late fees where I could not afford it with not working. I could of paid my payments if there wasn't an additional 130 added on or more late fees. So now they own all my belongings.

Be ready for the biggest lawsuit you'll ever face because you locked my CPAP machine in my unit and I could not get to it. Why you put the extra lock on it when I already already paid up. You will be giving me a refund. And I am going to take you to court to sue you cause you had no reason you had no right to lock my unit up. And when you did that I was without my CPAP for a whole 5 days.. Get ready!!!!

671 BATCHELOR STREET TOMS RIVER, NJ 08753 & its surrounding areas. Outside units are literally less than 5 minutes away from this location. AVOID THESE PLACES at all costs! Just look at their reviews! Around or less than 2 STARS! That tells you WHAT TYPE OF COMPANY THEY ARE! THEY are a rip off, period! Do not listen to their prorated rate gimmick, and the amount of increase is SHOCKINGLY HIGH! It's embarrassing how they treat their customers and try to take advantage. It's beyond sad! We just need to let people know how they are. Avoid them at all costs. Many more to choose from! Just do your research. Guaranteed you will find a better rate, better customer service, and better district manager, Mike, who would cater and understand their customers. I have been in retail for over 30 years, and this treatment of your customer base, is embarrassing and appalling.

Moving out of our home while waiting for our new house has already been a stressful process. We had help for one day and were working quickly to get everything completed. We needed a 20x20 unit, and Extra Space Storage had one available in town. We booked the unit. When we arrived, we discovered it was actually two 10x10 units combined. We were given two locks keyed the same and were asked to retrieve the black bags containing the original locks from inside the units and return them to the office. We were accustomed to having staff show us the units, but instead were only told where to go.
We unloaded everything and finished late in the day. The units were locked and secured. The following day, when we returned to unload a few lighter items, we realized that we had mistakenly placed our belongings in the wrong unit. Rather than ignoring the mistake, we immediately went to the office to address it. We were told to return the next day because the manager was not in and it was “her store.” When we called the next day, we were informed that we would need to move the contents to the correct unit and were given two days to complete the transfer due to system limitations. We are now scrambling to arrange help again to move everything within their deadline. It is disappointing that a minor administrative adjustment could not be handled internally, especially given the circumstances. I would not recommend this facility if you require a unit larger than 10x10.

Rented a 5’ X 10’ unit from them in May 2025 for $25.00 per month, 3 months later, they doubled the price to $50.00 per month. Just got notice that as of 3/10/2026, the cost will be $105.00. This is outrageous & I will be looking for alternative.

I got a small unit started off at 80 a month then a couple months later went up 131. Been there a couple times to get things out of unit. I had my own lock and keys then went in Dec 19 to pay bill then Jan go pay my unit online and my bill was 196. I paid it and called the following day asking why almost 60 dollars more and they said my lock was broken in which when I went last it was fine. Even double checked it before leaving making sure it was locked. But according to them it was broken and so they charged me for their lock and mailing fees for the keys but yet haven't received nothing in mail.
So I got no access to my storage and they also said my unit had their lock for a couple months now before when I went to storage and paid in December and if so why didn't they tell me then about the lock cause they gotta pull up my records and it should say there but never mentioned anything to me and yet still got no access to storage. Never received keys so I was charged without my permission or notification for their lock and mailing fees that they mailed the keys. Altogether 60 dollars I was charged and no access to my belongings.. Something just ain't right..

I have had a very good relationship with John at Extra Space on Monroe Rd near Matthews. Very professional, and prompt if I ever needed anything regarding my unit. He is very helpful and kind. He is an asset to his company.

I would give this place a zero if I could! The customer service sucks, no help whatsoever! I wish town storage hadn’t sold, they were a 100% better! They are a rip-off, take your money. I can’t wait to empty my storage unit so I won’t have to deal with this rip-off company. Do NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!! They won’t help you and rip you off!!!!

I was never told this when I rented this unit that after 3 payments they would double my payments. I can't afford the original payment. How am I gonna afford a double payment? I don't know how anybody can afford that.

I had a move out scheduled for 1/31 and payment for next next month wasn’t due until 2/1. I moved out as scheduled of unit C234 and left a VM as no one answered my call. Today (2/1) the account says delinquent and overdue. I cancelled because of bait and switch pricing. I rented 2 units before I realized that they increase rates dramatically after 4 months. Our “warning,” was an odd postcard mailed to our address. Every other communication method has been via email and text. In fact, when I went on the website/my account it said next payment due 2/1, but never said the amount. Which was $112. When I rented the unit it was $58 with no Indication that this was only for a promotional period. My other unit went from $95 or so to $123, also on the 5th month.
I never fully utilized c234 due to this barely-communicated price hike, so I demanded some type of credit on my account for the money I wasted on unit c234 due to false advertising. I have not heard back yet. Truly appalling business practices and now the class actions make sense. I have never been this disappointed in a company’s lack of ethics.

- Duct tape was used to “fix” the door that was stuck open- it’s been an ongoing issue.
- I have rented this unit for 3.5 years with zero payment issues. My corporate card was compromised and I communicated to the manager that I was waiting on the new one for payment. They still put a different lock on my unit and blocked my password for entering the facility.
- I was told that my contact somehow randomly changed. The manager told me I was no longer able to ship or receive UPS packages to and from my unit. Even though I have a contact with UPS stating they have permission to access my unit when I am not there. I asked for documentation of this new rule and the manager said, “This is your verbal notice”.
Then I asked for a phone number to call, and she said, “I cannot give you a number.”-The mangers answer for all of my concerns is always, “I’m sorry you feel that way.”
- Monthly rent of this unit is almost $700.
- This is the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced.

Disturbing that Management on ALL levels shows an extreme lack of professionalism. On site manager was belligerent and refused to refund/credit a lock I did not open, after being in the unit less than 30 days. He also refused to close my unit out when I was on the premises, because he wanted to show he had the upper hand. He absolutely refused to do his job, and because I did not agree with his treatment of me, he gaslight me. I had to call the 800 number customer service to close my unit. Upper management did not adhere to their 48 hour deadline to address customer service issues, and after multiple calls still are still ignoring me. I can’t trust my belongings or my money at Extra Space Storage because of lack of management accountability and game playing. Sad that such a nice facility is ruined my Management.

3 months into my rental I learned of that the "promotional rate is expiring", and the price is going up to from around $35 to $70. Apparently the "promotional" rate is discussed somewhere in the contract. I am typically concerned about such arrangements, but somehow missed this, making me suspicious about their transparency. Regardless this is deceptive. Why double the price in 3 months unless you anticipate that you can "catch" those less suspecting?

This company ran a bait and switch promotion. They signed us up at $91 a month. After 3 months, they sent a notification that seemingly said nothing of importance, but in the small print, stated the rates were going up to $171 a month. DO NOT TRUST this company. I called their rep and she stated that they made this abundantly clear that this was a short-term temporary promotion. Upon reviewing the contract, that it is a lie. Fortunately for us, we have plenty of facilities around here with much more honest business practices. Don't get caught using this company for your storage. You WILL drastically overpay.

Within the 1st year there was a $160 increase in the rent. They are definitely a bait and switch and this is after I had to quickly move due to a natural disaster. Also after 7 days, my unit assesses a $60 late fee. I’m usually not late but I've suffered due to a reduce in hours at work. Not customer friendly at all and as far as pricing, yeah rate is low but after that introductory rate, they literally try to kill ya! Wouldn’t recommend them to my worst enemy. Will be moving as soon as I can.

If there is a zero-star rating, I'll give them, their storage facility is plagued with rodents. Avoid them by all means. I kept my things in their storage at Beechnut Street for almost six years and paid almost $200 every month for six years, including insurance. They were destroyed by rodents, I filed a claim, but they still went ahead and denied the claim.

I was with this storage facility location for almost 5 years when it was Life Storage. Excellent company and management. Then Extra Space bought them out and took this facility over, not only did they jack the rates up leaving customers feeling like their belongings are held hostage if you don't pay it because they know either you can't afford to move out but you can no longer afford the rate increases. They have not properly managed the facility. There has been an increase in roaches, an increase in security lapses and issues, an increase in broken doors just to mention a few.

Seems like every month they are increasing the rent. I was originally renting a very small unit that was $44. After about a year it had climbed to $90/ month. I called about this and was told I could get a larger one for the same price. Sounded good so I said ok. Moved into the new unit in October, made my January payment and my bill for next month, February is $151! I 1st got the storage unit because it was $44/ month, something I could afford. In 2 years going from $44 to $151 is ridiculous. I've given my notice and will be moving my stuff out this month.

DONT USE THEM!! I’ve had nothing but nothing but trouble since this company took over. When it was the old company, there was no issues. I do understand there’s a rent increase with going from $51.50 to $94.74 is completely diabolical!!! I’ve been there almost 3 years.

My unit was $177 and in 2 years it jumped to $377. That's half my apartment rent!! For a Salt Lake city based company charging rates in NYC, I should get the State AG involved with this unscrupulous company!!!

Very thankful for the staff here at Extra Storage located at 2910 N Decatur Rd, Decatur, GA 30033. . . The place is always clean and neat And . . . Today Ms. ** was exceptionally helpful. I had an account concern and without a beat after a few questions Ms. ** took to the keyboard and sent emails and voila! I had answers and results. Thank you Ms. ** and thank you Extra Space for hiring quality professionals that understand hospitality and customer service. Perhaps a bonus for Ms. ** this month!!

Extra Space Storage salesperson locked me in at the rate I agreed to and assured me my rate would not change. They lied! My rate shot up from 99/mo to 225/mo. Do not trust this place! Terrible! I will not be using them in the future. Bait and switch. Beware!
