What is AAA insurance?

AAA (the American Automobile Association) has been insuring Americans since 1902 and operates in more than 50 independent branches across the country. Since its inception, the company has been known for its automobile and driver safety services. Along with auto insurance, it provides homeowners, health and life coverage and more. It also offers insurance add-ons and policy bundles.

How does AAA auto insurance work?

To qualify for AAA auto insurance policies, you must be a AAA member. A membership also comes with perks like discounts on movies, hotels, rentals and more. Auto policy coverage and discount options vary slightly from branch to branch, but each AAA location offers all the standard coverage:

  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Liability
  • Medical payments
  • Personal injury protection
  • Underinsured motorist
  • Uninsured motorist

You can also add several coverage options to your policy. Your local branch could offer:

  • Accident forgiveness
  • Custom electronics
  • Loan/lease payoff
  • New vehicle replacement
  • Pet coverage
  • Rental car reimbursement
  • Roadside assistance

You can also bundle home and auto policies to save more — depending on your location and insurer, you might be able to add life insurance to your bundle. Other insurance options some AAA clubs offer:

  • Collector car
  • Boat and watercraft
  • Commercial auto
  • Small business
  • Earthquake
  • Flood
  • Homeowner
  • Landlord
  • Renters
  • Pet
  • Travel
  • Umbrella

AAA auto insurance cost

AAA membership starts as low as $38.50 for the first year and increases depending on your location and selected services. Insurance rates also vary greatly person to person. Your AAA car insurance quote depends on various factors, such as age, location, driving history, credit score and more.

AAA also offers multiple discount possibilities. You could qualify for discounts like:

  • Advanced purchase
  • Driver training
  • Good student
  • Loyalty
  • Multipolicy
  • Multivehicle
  • Original owner
  • Paid-in-full
  • Vehicle safety equipment
  • Theft recovery devices

Still have questions?

Is AAA a good car insurance?

AAA has been insuring American drivers for over a century. For some, it might not be worth it to pay a membership fee for car insurance — but AAA’s discounts and general benefits might balance out membership costs. Overall, AAA might not be the best choice for someone looking for bare-bones coverage, considering the added cost of a membership fee; however, if you want full coverage, policy bundle options and extra perks, AAA might meet your needs.

Hit a deer this morning on my way to work. App wouldn't work and when it did it asked questions that had nothing to do with the accident. Decided to call since they are "available" 24/7. No one answered the phone. My rates keep going up even though I haven't had to file a claim in years. My rate is now where it was when I left my other insurance company. AAA is the worst insurance I have ever had.

30+years. I have two windshield rock claims, one ticket 6 years ago. They keep raising prices. Try calling them they have a lovely AI that doesn’t understand voice or pressing the number response. The humans are not any better. My policy comes up in two months and I wanted to discuss the policy change. The person I finally got to speak to after 17 minutes on hold kept telling me my policy isn’t due until August so there is nothing to talk about. Well I got a quote $700 less than what I paid this year’s policy. I guess it’s time to go.

Claim took OVER A MONTH to resolve and get payment for simple snow related accident involving only myself with no bodily injury, just some minor vehicle damage. AND THEN they had the nerve to not renew our policy because of said claim. We had the option of possibly paying a much higher premium if we wanted to keep AAA. Obviously declined. This is after never having an at-fault accident or moving violation on my record in my over 20 years of driving. Horrible company. We had been shopping around for a better price when we found AAA and I honestly wished we had looked further or opted for a company that charged very slightly more to avoid the headache. Now covered under another company for about the same price as our original policy with AAA even with the accident history so it's really just not worth it. If anything ever happens you will be sorry to have AAA insurance, go elsewhere.

Zero stars. I’m convinced that AAA auto insurance has a policy that all employees, including all levels of management, are not to return calls or respond to customers. I have repeatedly attempted to contact my agent via email telephone and text with no response. I escalated my concern to the agent's second-level manager and did not even get a return call.

I couldn’t even get them to take my money when I was trying to pay for one year coverage for my auto insurance. I’ve spoken with other customers that share the same concerns. You may wanna look elsewhere if you’re looking for a company that cares about their customers. They promised to reimbursement check in three business days however, it took two months to receive it despite multiple attempts and complaints. Buyer beware; this is not a good company.

My car was totaled by hail April 2. We followed all instructions about how to get an estimate, send the estimate to AAA, get an amount set for the claim. AAA came and hauled my car away. I filled out all paperwork to transfer the title. On April 28, we received an email saying that everything with the title was approved and that we would either get the money or a notice from AAA in two days. A week later, we have no car, no title, no money. When I wrote to the email address on the policy, it came back as invalid address. When we called, we were told that the title had not yet been approved. And we were given another number to call. We called that number... left a message... and have no reply. Communication is terrible!

This company is a scam. They rip off customers. They kept hitting me with 450 dollar bill and saying it’s from November. For months now every time I got off phone with associates each month they assured me the November issue was done and then it would reappear next month despite being told I was up to date and paid in full, insurance on general is a scam but this is just ripping people of atp also paying for. AAA membership is also trash. I had car need tow they only cover 7 miles btw after that was gonna be 6-12 dollars a mile, also scam membership! Avoid them

All is well when there is no need for help, but when there is, you realize that by not having a personal insurance person who is assigned to your multiple accounts, you are never going to get an answer. A serious mistake was made on our accounts and no matter how many times you call or go to the office nobody has the ability to advocate for you or even care. Every call one makes takes you to a new representative that does not know about your other calls, and when you go to the office the rep can't help you because if you have claim the rep. has no access to it. Hours on the phone, two letters and a visit to the office with NO results or response to your communications. That after we have been insured with them of 30 years. I regret my loyalty to them, it was easy with no claims on the books, but when you have a claim, they refuse to acknowledge their responsibility, and cancel your already paid membership.

I will never use AAA of Michigan again. They cancel my insurance due to my son being in a accident in a Uber. They stated I did not list him as a household member when I applied for insurance. They also saying his driver's license was suspended. They also stated he did not have Medicare insurance, which he does have medical insurance. Now remember he was in a Uber. Not driving. They said because I had insurance at the time and he lives in my household they have to go after my insurance company. He was not driving nor was he living at my address but because he have mail coming here it proves he live here at the time. I'm disable and needed my insurance. I believe this is unfair and not true with these claims. I will never use AAA again. They cannot prove he live here. He does have medical insurance. He was not in none of my vehicles nor was he driving.

AAA Insurance is the worst I have ever had. There is no loyalty with them. After 15 years, I am also switching to Good Sam for my roadside assistance. They paid a claim to another driver who was fault in an accident. When I proved in court that the other driver was at fault, the judge agreed. They refused to help me get right with Geico, the other driver's company. I even had to threaten to sue them to remove the at-fault designation from my policy. The agent was a pompous jerk too. I was able to better coverage for less than half from USAA.
