How does U-Haul work?

U-Haul offers moving trucks for local and long-distance moves. Because U-Haul has so many locations, it’s usually easy to request a truck for a last-minute move, depending on factors like your location and the time of year, such as during peak moving season.

U-Haul reservation guarantee

If your reservation was scheduled at the time of booking with confirmed equipment and a confirmed time and location, your reservation is guaranteed. However, sometimes the location, time or equipment can’t be guaranteed ahead of time. In some cases, U-Haul will pay a $50 reservation guarantee.

It can help to call your preferred U-Haul location ahead of time to check on availability and have flexible plans so you can pick up a truck at another location if necessary.

U-Haul costs

U-Haul’s local moves start at $19.95. Its rates include a flat fee for the rental period and a per-mile charge.

Example: local move cost

We collected sample quotes for a move within Tulsa, Oklahoma on a Saturday in April. All costs are accurate as of March 13, 2026.

Storage

U-Haul’s storage services include one-year price lock, climate control, business storage options, vehicle storage and portable storage. Certain U-Haul locations also offer free 30-day storage, which is a big perk most other moving companies can’t match.

Roadside assistance

All U-Haul truck rentals come with roadside assistance in case anything should go wrong during your trip. For a flat $5 fee, renters can add on Safetrip service, which includes coverage for jump starts, lockouts, fuel or stuck vehicles.

Other services

After having an absolutely terrible experience with another truck rental company that failed to provide the truck I had reserved, I was left scrambling at the last minute to find a moving truck. Thankfully, U-Haul came through when I needed them most. The staff was professional, understanding, and genuinely willing to help. They quickly located a truck for me on short notice and made what had already become a stressful day much easier to manage. Instead of treating me like an inconvenience, they listened to my situation and worked to find a solution.

What impressed me most was that they recognized the hardship and added expense I incurred because of the other company's failure to honor my reservation. To help offset the inconvenience, they provided a discount on my mileage charges, which was greatly appreciated and showed they truly care about customer service. The truck was available when promised, the rental process was smooth, and the staff went above and beyond to turn a frustrating situation into a positive experience.

Moving is stressful enough without having to worry about whether your rental company will actually have the equipment you reserved. U-Haul saved the day for me, and I am incredibly grateful for their professionalism, customer service, and willingness to help when another company dropped the ball. Thank you to the U-Haul team for stepping up, taking care of your customer, and proving that great customer service still exists. I will definitely use U-Haul again and highly recommend them to anyone needing a reliable truck rental.

Well when you have a horrible experience with AmeriSafe Van Lines, U-Haul comes through like a huge saving grace. Everyone from customer service calls, to the personnel and pickup and drop-off locations are just fantastic!! Had some changes in the size of trucks I needed, no problem, needing my bill corrected when I got to downsize a truck, no problem. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE was simply a pleasure to work with... Had to rent more than 1 truck so I ended up being asked to participate in the Equipment Relocation Program. Great people! Great Service! Great Products!!

I would like to recognize Asia at the U Haul location in Olive Branch, Mississippi, for providing exceptional customer service. I came in on May 25th dealing with a very stressful situation and in need of assistance to continue my move for the day. Asia was extremely proactive, professional, and helpful throughout the entire process. She went above and beyond to ensure that I was able to get a U-Haul and continue with my move without further delays. Her attitude, patience, and willingness to help truly stood out and made a difficult day much easier for me. Asia’s customer service was absolutely top tier, and I would definitely recommend her to anyone needing assistance. Thank you again, Asia, for your kindness and outstanding support!

U-Haul is a corrupt corporation that will charge false toll charges on your out of State rentals with fabricated claims. After several attempts of trying to rectify this situation my voice fell on deaf ears, leading me to write this review to warn others of this unethical and dishonest business practice. After many years of faithful patronage, I have decided to stop using U-Haul for my business and personal needs, due to their cold and uncaring behavior towards my predicament. It’s sad to see such a great company like U-Haul use spoofing to increase their bottom-line.

Do not use if you're renting a vehicle and a trailer. The service reps and facilities are not knowledgeable about which trailer is needed for the type of car you have and they change your rental without your permission. I rented an auto transport because I have a rear wheel drive 1987 car. Uhaul changed the trailer type to a tow dolly after I already had the location and rental confirmed.

I called them and requested they change it back to what I ordered in the first place. The location rep asked me what kind of car I have (mind you all of the info was in the system) to see if I can use the tow dolly. He didn't have the auto transport so I was sent 35 miles away to a location that had one rather than the original 15 minute drive. I also rented a uhaul van from a location in my town as that is where they had one so I basically was charged to pick up the trailer for the rental and gas. This all would have been a non issue if they were honest and told me they didn't have the trailer I needed in the first place rather than say they did. I would have made other arrangements entirely.

I would be careful and not rely on a rental if you need something specific because they can't guarantee it. Their focus is to sale you and upsell you storage and get your credit card number to hold the reservation. The main uhaul reps can't resolve issues either and they ask you to talk to the locations which are hard to get a hold of. Lastly, they charged a card I initially used to hold the reservation then called.l back the next day to change the card. They took my info and the new card was uploaded in the app and saved. They still charged my other card! Very disappointing.

The estimate was half of what it finally cost me, they lost my credit card number at one point, and didn’t tell me I could use their Victoria yard to store the U-Box. Not happy. I was told I had to ship from Kanata, ON to Richmond, BC where the U-Box would be stored until we got an address to ship it to in Nanaimo. This was wrong. They also have a storage yard in Victoria. Knowing this in advance might have saved me some money. The cost of shipping from Gatineau, QC to Richmond, BC was roughly the same amount I was told it cost to get it from Kanata to Nanaimo. They hadn’t factored in the last leg of the trip from Richmond to Vancouver Island and then up to Nanaimo.

At one point, they told me I had to re-enter my credit card number because it was no longer on file. The day I found this out, I tried to go onto their website to re-enter the number only to find out their website was down. When I called, they claimed this was nothing to worry about, but when a site is down and credit card numbers are involved, my first thought was that they’d been hacked.

All in all, I’m not happy with this service. I was led to believe it would cost around $1800 to ship a single U-Box from Ontario to Vancouver Island and it ended up costing closer to $3400. I’m not saying you shouldn’t use this service, but make sure you know what you’re getting into. Get your estimate in writing. Lastly, I hired a third-party company to deliver and unload my U-Box and while they were here, one of the workers guided me through reviewing the service. I thought I was reviewing just the delivery guys and not U-Haul as well. When I went to write this review on the U-Haul site, I was told I'd already submitted a review and couldn't do a second.

Terrible experience with this company; I will never use them again. I rented a truck for two days, and upon return, I was hit with numerous hidden fees that were never disclosed during the online booking process. Furthermore, their customer service is awful. I have now received a highly threatening email demanding payment within seven days. I deeply regret renting from them.

I am filing a formal complaint for severe consumer deception, identity misappropriation, and unauthorized profile fabrication under NY GBL § 349.A clerk (Shayala S.) at the U-Haul Woodside location (Location 802023) used my government-issued driver's license number without my consent to create a primary financial rental contract I never signed or agreed to. The store processed a third party's payment card but forced my name onto the account. They entered completely false, fabricated profile data, including a fake contact phone number ending in 7130 that has never belonged to me. The primary signature on the contract is an absolute forgery.

Due to a subsequent clerical entry error regarding the return destination, U-Haul generated massive "wrong-location" fees when the equipment was returned on time during a severe blizzard to a Brooklyn location. U-Haul has placed a fraudulent administrative "System Hold" blocking my driver's license over these fake fees, stripping away my mobility and right to rent vehicles. When I disputed this, local manager Shayae S. lied on a recorded corporate line on June 17th to cover up the store's liability.

On June 24th, U-Haul's regional E-Alert compliance agent, Kayla **, issued a formal denial based on a police reporting technicality, explicitly stating in writing that she is "halting all contact" and refusing any upper-level supervisor review. I have a federal FTC Identity Theft Report and a notarized Affidavit of Forgery. Detective ** of the NYPD 69th Precinct PDS (718-257-6215) reviewed the file and confirmed this is an internal corporate record falsification issue that U-Haul must resolve internally.

My associates are forced to pay fraudulent fees under intense economic duress and written protest just to temporarily bypass the system block during a time-sensitive family move. I demand that NYC Consumer Affairs investigate this business for deceptive acts and order U-Haul to permanently lift the administrative hold on my driver's license. According to U haul own rules the Contract Name must match the Name on the card for payment! The signature doesn't match the card owner or the name on contract!

I booked an online rental for a moving truck. I believed I had booked a one-way rental. I had accidentally booked an in-town rental. When I picked up the truck I believed the agent helped me correct the problem. 100 miles later at drop off, less than a mile from my house, I was informed of the mistake. I was charged double the fees for a problem I believed had been corrected. U-Haul was absolutely unhelpful. Dealing with them was a stonewall. I advise taking your business to another company. I will never use them again.
