About eFax

eFax allows customers to send and receive faxes by email. Recipients receive faxes as a PDF in their inbox, allowing them to sign with a finger or add their electronic signature. What is eFax?

eFax is a company that offers online fax services with no fax machine required. eFax is wireless and lets you send and receive faxes from anywhere. You can do this using a computer, email, the eFax app or the eFax messenger system. Customers can choose their own local, international or toll-free fax number.

eFax also offers electronic signatures, file sharing, unlimited third-party cloud storage and an enhanced security option. The free app is available for desktop and mobile.

The company offers two plans to choose from. The eFax Plus plan lets you send 150 pages and receive 150 pages per month, while the eFax Pro plan increases to 200 pages each. The plans don’t allow you to combine the number of pages that go in or out, however — you’re limited to 200 sent faxes even if you don’t receive any.

How does eFax work?

Using eFax to send and receive faxes is a fairly simple process. To send a fax by email, you compose an email and address it to the recipient’s fax number, followed by the eFax email suffix. You can attach up to 10 files to the email. Finally, hit “send” and your fax will be delivered.

If you’re sending from a computer, go to the eFax website login page. Enter the recipient’s address, fill in the fax information and attach up to 10 files. Once finished, click “send” and the recipient will receive it as a normal fax. The process is the same for sending from the mobile app.

To receive a fax, just log in to your app or eFax account. Click on “inbox” for your mobile app or “view faxes” on your eFax portal. Tap or click your received faxes to view them.

eFax pricing

eFax has two plans for customers to choose from. The eFax Plus plan and eFax Pro plan both have the option of monthly or yearly billing. At the time of publishing, the plans cost:

  • eFax Plus: $16.99 monthly, or $169.56 annually ($14.13 a month)
  • eFax Pro: $19.99 monthly, or $199.56 billed annually ($16.63 a month)

If you choose the annual option, you receive two months free. Both plans have a $10 setup fee. If you send or receive more than your monthly allotted pages, each additional fax will be 10 cents per page. eFax offers a 14-day trial If you’re not sure which plan works better for you.

eFax FAQ

Does eFax really work?

eFax does work. It offers users incoming and outgoing fax options and can be used anywhere.

How long does eFax take to send?

The entire process usually takes less than two minutes for a single page fax. Dialing the number takes between 30 and 90 seconds, and the fax will take about 30 to 45 seconds per page to transmit.

Can you send an eFax to a fax machine?

You can send an eFax to a fax machine. eFax numbers work just like fax machine numbers, so you can send to and receive from a fax machine.

Can you send an eFax to a cell phone?

You can send an eFax to a cell phone. The cell phone will need the free eFax app to receive your fax.

Still have questions?

Is eFax legit?

eFax is safe to use, especially in comparison to a regular fax machine. Instead of your information sitting on a fax machine for anyone to see, eFax files go to your personal inbox. eFax also offers enhanced security encryption that sends an email with a URL that logs you in with a TLS connection. You can then log in to view your fax. Enhanced security doesn’t cost extra, but you need to contact customer service to activate it. Overall, eFax is a safe and simple alternative to a regular fax machine.

I started an EFax 7-Day trial & could never get into it because of problems with my account/password sync. Sent several support requests about the problem, but EFax kept sending a reset email that didn't solve the problem. The next day, I sent eFax a message to cancel. A week or two later, I was billed $49.99. Disputed with my credit card 2x and EFax rejected the refund. They are crooks. eFAX Customer Support is useless.

Terrible customer service. They charged my account for one month when I cancelled the service during the trial period, because they couldn't send the fax to the numbers that I tried. Contacted the customer service multiple times and asked for refund, but they pushed back multiple times, to take care of it, and now the time for disputing through credit card is over, and they don't care about it. It's a bait and switch scam service. Customer service is rude and unhelpful.

Please watch out for eFax predatory service and lemon service. Attached is the quality of fax I have received since when I first signed up for this service in Dec 2024. They made me sign a 3 year contract with false promise of quality such as scrambled pages, overlapping content, and also email faxes that don't contain origination. I lost my client thanks to their service since they said the client must change their fax machine. I switched over immediate to pure email where client directly sends me email instead of fax as eFax didn't work. I told eFax it is not working for me and insisted that they cancel the lemon service contract. They refused and insisted I pay $400/mo for 3 months with hardly any usage. They want me to test with other machines but never address the issue I had.

Scam service. Charges by the minute. Not the pages. They say you get 150 pages but that's eaten up by the minutes. No stopping a text if it isn't able to get through, so a fax of 5 pages gets sent 3 times to continue trying to send and I got hit with over 72 minutes of time. Why does it take 28 minutes to send a fax??? Charged me $16.95/mo plus $10 every time I faxed saying I was over the limits. After a huge dispute, they said they refunded me and put pages back in my account but that got eaten up sending the same fax over and over to different numbers of a company that just took over 72 minutes to complete. This company is a scam. Please look elsewhere. Simply awful!!!!

Naively, I assumed I would receive a monthly billing statement in my email, even though I had set up automatic billing. This seems like standard business practice. You DO NOT. So don't forget about this charge and don't forget to copy and paste your billing charges from their website for your taxes if you run a business!!! Their customer service group is out of the US and will NOT credit you. I had worked with another efax company a few years back; I had just been charged the monthly fee when I wanted to end my service, and they credited me no problem. I felt this was good customer service, since I had paid them for their service for several months. This company--nope. My bad, but eFAX SUCKS.

The more that 200 people who took the time to complain about the deceptive billing practices of Consensus Cloud Solutions, Inc. (eFax) should have been mentioned here. For individuals or small businesses interested in efficient ways to send faxes, they need to know that efax charges by the minute - not the page. So, if you purchase a certain number of pages - say 250 - you may only be able to send or receive 50 before the company, without notice, charges you for additional "pages" even though what they mean is minutes. Their website is cleverly deceptive, in an attempt to brag that each page only takes one minute, what they are trying to say is that each page IS one minute.

So, if their system is slow (which efax's system is VERY slow if it takes 120 minutes to send 32 pages), that is not 32 pages but allegedly 120 PAGES. This is something that businesses, who value a transparent partner in communication solutions, should be told clearly - not have it deceptively hidden. Nowhere on their main website do they say that you are buying minutes - they use "pages" and you naturally then track pages - but in reality you are being scammed.

I absolutely despise this service. Only needed to send one fax, so I bought a one week trial. Went to cancel my subscription - the 'cancel' button was a dead link. clicked 'contact us'. another dead link. Emailed them a whole week before the subscription was due to renew that I wanted to cancel. Crickets. They didn't email back until after the free trial had elapsed, and they had already posted the charge to my account. Also threw a $6 late fee in there just to add insult to injury. Emailed them back and forth over a dozen times getting them to cancel, and they were incredibly unhelpful and rude. Eventually they just billed my card anyway, and I spent a month trying to dispute the transaction. I have never seen a more explicit case of fraud. Shame on everyone involved in this two-bit scam.

      Reviewed Sept. 6, 2025

I am writing this review to warn all potential customers to avoid eFax at all costs. My experience has revealed a deeply problematic and systematic pattern of behavior that makes canceling a subscription effectively impossible. Despite three separate phone calls to their customer service line at (323) 817-3207 on July 9, August 6, and September 4 of 2025, my subscription remains active. Each time, I was assured by an agent that my cancellation would be processed "immediately." Yet, eFax continues to charge my credit card month after month.

The company has deliberately designed its system to prevent easy cancellation. There is no functional option to cancel online, and the instructions provided are misleading and appear intentionally convoluted. Due to these deceptive and predatory practices, I have filed formal complaints with:

My bank (USAA) to dispute the fraudulent charges.
      The Better Business Bureau (BBB).

The Texas Attorney General's Office. Notably, they confirmed they are already aware of numerous previous complaints against eFax.

My strong recommendation to anyone considering eFax is to look elsewhere. If you are already a customer and wish to cancel, you must protect yourself. Document everything:

Record your phone calls (where legal).
Keep detailed records of all interaction dates, times, and agent names.
      Save all written communication.

Forward this evidence to your state's Attorney General. These agencies rely on documented proof to take action against companies that systematically defraud consumers.

This level of documentation is also critical for building potential class-action lawsuits against businesses that engage in such practices. Do not assume a phone call is enough—follow up persistently and ensure you have written proof of your cancellation. Stay vigilant and choose a more reputable service

You can't see when faxes are in progress so you don't know if they failed or even were initiated. You get charged per second that it takes to send the faxes and you don't know what the charge is until after it goes through or fails. You get charged per page and second regardless of if it fails or goes through. There's no leniency on this and this is NOT explained properly in the sign up emails (they only bring it up at the agreement linked to at the bottom of the home page and even this doesn't fully explain it). There are plenty of other services with much less shady practices and much better UI.

The worst customer service I have ever experienced. Believe the one star reviews, everyone. I work for a non-profit organization that deals with healthcare services. Our fax line was down so I utilized eFax's promo to send a time sensitive fax to an insurance company. I received confirmation the fax was sent and subsequently cancelled my account. The card I utilized was a company card with a small limit. Turns out efax did not cancel my account and continued to charge me for not one, but TWO fax numbers, sending me no invoices or email communications about the charge. I called them to request a refund, since I had cancelled the account, have not even logged into the account, sent any faxes, or known this was happening. Efax has record of this lack of activity.

I have since called efax over 4 times. I have been connected with multiple reps who have asked me the same questions, despite having notes of all the calls. They cancelled my account finally. I requested a refund which they said would have to go through their billing department. I was told I would get an email confirmation of the request submission, and an email about the decision they made. The first agent said the turn around time for these requests is typically less than 24 hours. I received no confirmations. So I called efax back, the second agent I spoke to said that it takes up to 10 days for billing to go through these requests. I asked for a direct number for billing, they said they do not provide anyone with a number for billing. I requested email confirmation of this request and it being investigated, nothing was returned. I called back again, an agent quoted me 7 days. No confirmation, nothing.

I called back today 6/2 (this has been going on for over a month at this point) and the agent informed me that the billing department had already made a decision and declined my request. Despite me having already cancelled the account months ago, despite me not receiving any receipts or utilizing the fax services what so ever. The agent on the phone, Guy, said that the amount charged to my card must be inconsequential for me to have "not noticed". Considering I had already cancelled the account, didn't have access to the login info of this company card, and never make company purchases - the issue of getting me access to this account was not high priority.

I requested to appeal the decision with billing considering I had not used the services whatsoever, and I was told they could see that there were no logins or faxes sent in those months after the one. There were also no invoices or emails sent from efax for the duration that I "had the service". They stated that I can keep calling but they will not change their decision. Even though I cancelled after receiving the confirmation since our company HAS a fax service, even though I never received anything indicating my account was open, even though I did not login or use the fax service one time after the one fax was sent, and I closed the account - they have refused to refund me. It's clear the agents have been coached on this and say the same thing over and over again. Never trust a company that doesn't allow you to contact its billing department directly!

Updated on 05/21/2025: eFax's reply to this review is a smoke screen. I reached out to them multiple times, including at the email address provided.

Original Review: TERRIBLE service and a complete rip-off. They charged me $10 for ONE PAGE over my piddly 10-page allowance for the subscribed month. They didn't send a receipt to notify me of the charge and it isn't under the Billing info on their page because they want to run up a bunch of charges without you knowing. They refused to give, or even consider, a refund. Also, you get so much spam! I wouldn't be surprised if it is from them to eat up your page counts.

The website is very clunky and buggy. I needed to fax a request (a kind of big ask) and eFax sent that fax 11 times! The recipient that I was asking a favor from was bombarded with 77 pages. Also, both customer service AND I cancelled the service, and they STILL charged for another month. Do yourself a favor and find another service.
