In my preceding home, which I have had for roughly 10 years, I had solar panels and they were very successful in every way. I had leased those and since a representative indicated that I would be able to lease the solar panels from SunPower, that made me interested in seriously considering. Signing up was very easy and everything has gone well. We are very satisfied. But there's been one little problem. A golf ball wound up hitting one of our panels. I sent a picture in to SunPower, asking if they thought it would be wise to have that panel fixed, but they never answered my email. That aside, it has been as if our power was coming directed from the power company. We’ve had no problem and no breaks in the service so it’s been excellent.

I started looking at several different companies and after about eight weeks, I selected them based on product and cost. The rep, Shawn, understood the basics of the technology. I had all of the information about my last year of power and Southern California Edison cost. He was able to lay out a design and talk about how many panels to the appropriate power level. You get the loan from Mosaic. He did not know about the 30% discount and what Mosaic was expecting to get back from that 30% rebate.

Basically, Mosaic gave us the 18 months and put a target balance on the mortgage. And in our conversations at the time, Shawn did not understand that very well and said that I needed to pay the 30% right upfront. It got a little bit testy with me because he was telling me how I was gonna have to manage my money. And I didn't need that. I just needed to know what the ground rules were, and I could manage anyway. I had to finally get the loan, get their paperwork to come in, and clarify what was on there. The detailed explanation was on the second page of the Mosaic contract and told Shawn that that was the page he needed to know. I understand that Mosaic may change things, but they would probably communicate with the salesmen.

The installers came in on the day they were gonna put in. It was a one-day installation. We had gotten everything set up with Southern California Edison and everything was put in. And it has been cranking ever since. The system is performing as specified and my Southern California Edison bill is down to somewhere between $5 and $9 a month.

I decided to do solar to eventually get off the PGE grid. Tired of paying them ever increasing amounts year to year. That's what sparked my decision. I researched 5 different panel companies, and was very detailed in my research. Ultimately chose Sunpower due to the warranty and quality. From the first contact until it was installed and live, it was 5 star service. Only thing to dock slightly, is that the initial year 1 estimate was off by about 10%, and I have been trying to get this cleared up and explained to me for a week, with no response. That would be the only negative experience throughout this process I can think of. I would definitely be recommending sunpower to all my friends looking for solar.

SunPower did an excellent job and the system seems to be working more efficiently than we thought it would. So, we’re more than pleased with it. They were ahead of schedule and the only thing that we had a problem with was we ended up getting a leak in the roof afterward, and they were out here numerous times, trying to rectify the problem. They did some extra work for us while we were up in the attic so, we have no complaints. Numerous people got back to me when I called the office and their customer service was excellent. The winter before last was a lot heavier and that was when we experienced the leak. This last winter was so minimal in rainfall so we didn’t really have a chance to totally check it out. But it was a roof bow leak and it was just a few drops. It never occurred until after the solar was put on but we’re assuming that it’s okay. They told me to give them a call if it happens again and they’ll be out to fix it.

I had leased solar panels from SunPower for 7 years. In the beginning everything functioned efficiently. The last few years the performance has been terrible. It is virtually impossible to get them to take responsibility for their failing. I have been calling them for the past year complaining about ineffective service. They out source virtually everything consumer related to the Philippines. Their customer service does not solve problems but reads off of cue cards. They attempt to placate you.

I was in the process of selling my house and my buyer agreed to accept the lease. The problem was that it was obvious the solar wasn't performing. I refused to pay my last few months of my bill. Ultimately after hours on the phone they agreed to send out someone to examine the solar. It turns that the inverter had blown and the solar had not turned on for almost a year. As a result my TRUE-Up with PG&E was 4 times the normal amount. Normally it is between $800 and $1000. This time it was $4200. They are avoiding taking responsibility for their failure. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. THEY ARE HORRIBLE.

I started out on a website called EnergySage, which helps you pick which options are right for you. Then, I chose SunPower because they had an integrated warranty with all the equipment, so it seemed like the least hassle and it was unique. Before they changed their business model, you say you are interested and they reach you. Then, they have partners all over the country and it was Freedom Solar Power who are the installer for this region in Texas. They were here for a whole day, and it was all installed from start to finish in a day. It was quick and they did a good job. My power is clean and I've been producing solar energy since November. The main reason I did it was to have an electric vehicle and I wanted to charge my car off of my house. Freedom Solar Power needs to come evaluate your home and not everybody is perfect for solar. So, make sure that your house is a good candidate before you invest in it.

I decided to install solar because I wanted to reduce my cost for electricity, which will add some value to the house and reduce my carbon footprint. I don't have an exact ROI but with tax incentives and rebates they were substantial and took off more than a third of the cost. Additionally once there's cost effective, efficient batteries available, I plan to install several so that I can capture that power to use in the evening hours which will save me additional $$.

I actually interviewed 3 companies and the SunPower Maxeon monocrystalline panels were the best product offered, because of their high efficiency rating and durability along with the 25 year warranty on the system. Jason the sales rep, provided detailed information on the products along with my concerns on batteries and the competition which I verified. Solar technology continues to evolve and improve, I believe it is important to be as close to the leading edge when making purchasing decisions seeing these panels will be utilized for many years.

The process to get the panels installed was quite simple as SunPower took care of all the permitting and survey of the roof. As a DIY person and technically inclined (prior military) I highly suggest having the work accuracy verified. Check the routing of the cables to the meters and if you can get on the roof, do so. Trust but verify! There were a few details that had to be corrected after the install was complete, they were done professionally and within a timely manner. I'm very happy with the outcome of the work.

During the summer months my bill is drastically reduced. I am content with the performance of my system as it is consistent with estimates provided to me before the installation. I also like the monitoring application with the system which allows one to see the production for any specified time period (Day, week, month, etc.) and compare to Energy Company bills. Both sources of data have been consistent. During the first year, my ROI (Return on Investment) has been 8% of my installation expense. This ROI will increase as energy prices rise in the outyears.

This review concerns only the phone support we received once the monitoring app was loaded. The sales and installation handled by Earthlight were excellent. When I contacted support about what appeared to be missed data I was a bit less than fully satisfied. First the chat option took to long to get feedback and secondly when I opted to actually talk to someone I believe they misdiagnosed the problem. Their conclusion was that there was a error in wiring the panel. So we scheduled an appointment with Earthlight. When they arrived and inspected the system there was nothing wrong. As it turns out it was a software issue in the monitoring system which has since been corrected.

We are currently satisfied that the info displayed on the app accurately describes what the solar system is producing. One message I received during these conversations was that the platform was being revised. I do not see anything different in my displays so I’m just wondering if the update has occurred or is still pending. To date we are very satisfied with the support we have received from Earthlight.

Stellar Solar exceeded our expectations in the following areas: sales presentation, pre-installation communications, installation efficiency and completeness and post-installation communications. We are only now seeing the payoff of the installation which is tracking what was estimated by the sales team before we signed on with Stellar Solar. We'd enthusiastically recommend Sun Power by Stellar Solar to anyone who'd care to seek our opinion.

It’s definitely saving me money from where my bill was. And now, I can monitor it and I have needed access if anything goes wrong, like if my monitoring system is down. That has happened before and Ambrose Solar, the company that did the installation, sent one of their guys out to check my system to make sure that it was functioning correctly on that end. And, so far, the warranty process has been good.

Looking into solar energy was kind of a no-brainer for me. My house is all electric and I needed a way to subside a $450 a month electric bill. It’s expensive in the part of the county I live in here in San Diego. My wife and I are very good friends with one of SunPower's lead salesmen. I kinda used my connection with him to get it done by them because I checked the ratings online and they turned out to be one of the much more reputable and honest companies that will honor all their work throughout the entire warranty period.

The whole process was very smooth from start to finish. When I talked to Eric, he came out, did the site survey, and worked up the plan with their computer program of how many panels I need and where was the best place to place them. Then, the job-site foreman got in contact with me and let me know the plan has been submitted to the county for permits. It took about three days before they had the permits. Then, we scheduled the installation date. The installation was very smooth and seamless. I'm 100% satisfied now that I’m paying anywhere from 40 to $60 a month in electric bills.

People who are considering solar energy should do their research on the company to make sure that the warranty is gonna be held up. Some of the reviews I read online for some solar power companies said that when it came time for any warranty issues, it was a nightmare to get them out there. With SunPower, I call them directly and they come out and fix the issue as soon as they can get me on a schedule.

The electric company set to repair the system said they don't even have a work order. I can call their guy up any time I wanted and he would answer the phone.

In the first year, I didn't pay a dime to APS which is the utility company. Instead, they paid me. Now, for the last couple of months, I've been paying them a little amount of money. But I can't tell if it's because of the different weather or whether it is the actual solar systems not working up to par like it did last year. Maybe I'm using more energy this year than I did last year or maybe the solar panels are not as efficient as they were last year.

The process took about an hour because I had a lot of questions 'cause he was the second solar person I had met with. Then I just waited to get the date when they could come and install it and our local electric company do all their information gathering and switch over the meter.

I've had the solar panels for 16 months. I can see what I am producing and I have a running tally on my phone. So as I start to generate more, like going into the summer months, I can see if my bill is just gonna be the minimum fee that my electric company charges me to stay connected to the grid. My first-year production didn't meet what they had projected me to meet so there was a check that was coming back. I'm just waiting on it.

    Original Review: Jan. 19, 2020

Updated on 03/13/2020: I had given SunPower a rating of 3 stars in my original review published on Jan 19th, and have lowered it to 2 stars. On Jan 22 I was contacted by a Sunpower representative in Austin, TX which stated they would get on the problem within a matter of a few days. After hearing nothing from them I then called the help desk on Jan 29 and generated another work order. Within a half hour I was contacted by the technician with Streamline Solar, who advised he was in the area and would stop by. He arrived and moved the pick up coil to a new location per SunPower's advice. This didn't solve the problem. On Feb 11 he returned and moved the pick up coil again to a location approx. 50 feet further up the line per SunPower's advice, and still did not resolve the problem.

On March 4 he returned and replaced the PVS5 transmitting unit. SunPower then advised they were reading the data but and were working on the problem. On Mar 6 I received an email from SunPower advising they had escalated my case to the product engineers and I should expect an update on or before Mar 12. On Mar 13 Consumer Affairs notified me they had heard my problem had been resolved, which it had not, and they requested I update my review. As of this time, the system is still not sending data to the web site.

Original Review: I have had the system operating for approx 15 months now. The monitoring system began malfunctioning on Dec 5 2019. After nasty messages from Sunpower telling me to "fix my internet" they finally sent out a technician from Streamline Solar, the folks who originally installed the equipment. Streamline Solar, by the way, did a fantastic job installing the system and also reacting to the service call. I would rate Streamline 10 stars.

A week ago we had a power outage and I was unable to restore the monitoring system. It has been inoperative since then. I read my electric meter daily to make sure my system is operating. In addition, during the past 12 months, I have come up short $348.67 (the difference between what my lease payments are and what I have had to pay the electric company). Since installing the system, I have replaced some of my LED lighting with more efficient LED bulbs and strips, have set our thermostat one degree warmer during the summer months and two degrees cooler during the winter months (we heat with an A/C-Heat Pump) still we came up short for the year. At this time I wish I would have stayed with the power company and not gone solar.

After all the great talk by Sunpower representative, we decided to buy the system 3 years ago. The things went downhill pretty fast after the installation. In last 3 years, the monitoring system went down 4 different times. Since I was not monitoring the system every day, it took me some time to realize that the monitoring system was not reporting back the solar production. Every time it took them a couple of months to send someone and fix it. Finally the 4th time, their technician who came to inspect it told me that the monitoring system was faulty and they needed to replace it. That means another couple of months of wait.

The monitoring system is the least of the problems. Within 3 years after the installation, the inverters are not working properly. The energy production went down significantly in 3rd year. That means, I paid for the solar system and now I am also paying electricity bill. Sunpower technician told me that the inverters are not working properly for months. This is something Sunpower should have monitored on their own and fix it a long time ago. They had promised me a certain energy production every year and I am not getting that because they sold me a faulty system.

Now they tell me that they ordered the parts to fix my system and that I would have to wait another four weeks before they could schedule an appointment. At this point I feel like I am getting the run around. Sunpower gave me guarantee of certain solar production and they don’t care what the system does after they sold it to you. If I have to buy solar all over again, I would never select Sunpower.

We started interactions with SunPower through one of their 'preferred partners' Westhaven Solar & Construction in mid-2016 and finally, after many calls and emails 6-9 months later in March of 2017, our panels were installed and our 'system turn on' phase was completed. I wrote a review of all that in another forum. From that point on, we have little to do as far as interaction with the company. Our panels were producing and we paid our monthly lease payments.

We had been noticing the steady increase in our local power bill over the last few months (We used to have a decent credit built up) and we thought that perhaps we heated the pool too much this summer or the kids were using more power. We even started talking to the kids more about not leaving lights on and conservation needs. We had issues with the mobile app as well as the online portal and it took us a few weeks to figure out that we needed to delete and reinstall the apps and change our passwords through the online portal because we were suspended/locked out and we could once again get into our account/monitoring capabilities.

At first the months didn't appear to be that different as far as output, but when looking at an historical view (across years) we were startled to see the differences! A drop of almost 45%! We went from a production of in: 2017 - 10,962.10 kwh to in 2018 - 11,244.18 kwh to in 2019 - 6,309.13 kwh. We contacted SunPower on December 9th and 18th, 2019 about the decrease we had seen. And on both occasions we were told that it was our responsibility to monitor the system and the outputs regularly.

On the 9th call they ran a system test from there, they received a return code for “bad Micro-inverters” and since it looked like our power output had been low for a while (they started to produce less than the year before in May 2018 (just over 1 year from installation)) it was probably an issue going back a while. (So in other words, our panels went bad mid-2018 and we didn’t tell you). We were also told that we would get an email for the service that would be needed to repair the inverters. No email came, which is what prompted the 2nd call, when we were informed that the Part needed to be ordered and then we would get an email. (No ETA given.) We asked to speak with a supervisor on both occasions and were told that there were none available. A case#, which was already opened, was communicated to us on the 18th.

I went back and looked at the documents that they sent us (because I read and keep everything) and in March of 2017…our ‘system turn on’ document states: •Annual Energy Production Report SunPower monitors your system performance. Following your 1-year anniversary, and for every year thereafter, you will receive our Annual Energy Production Guarantee report that summarizes your system’s energy production for the year.

If this is true, then they were and have been negligent. I have every email with my billing statement, password resets and anything else, but have NOT received any communication about our usage or their product and definitely not an annual energy production report. On December 19th we contacted Westhaven and spoke with a very nice receptionist (didn’t catch her name though) that noted our account and transferred us to Service (she had explained the situation, before handing us off) and from there Tracey proceeded to help us. He indicated that in situations like this (because he had been hearing this from others) it could take as long as 6 weeks to several months for the part to come in and the email for a service call to happen! Which is probably why SunPower didn’t say.

He said that he would reach out to Sunpower as well. Within 1 hour of that call we received an email from a Senior Customer Service Representative stating “We are still waiting for further updates from our warehouse department for the availability of the materials needed for the upgrade on your solar. As soon as it is completed, we will be requesting our scheduling team to reach out to you to set up an appointment for the installation of these microinverter”. I am not optimistic.

While the solar panels themselves have been great the service contract leaves much to be desired. I lease my panels so service is included. Recently, just after taking my October readings for SRECs my inverter died, which I did not notice until the November reading. After a bit of troubleshooting on my own, I noticed the inverter was completely dead so I called the support line. They had me try to reboot it, which did not work and I was advised they would "monitor it" for 48 hours after which I would need to call back to initiate a service call. Well, in my mind that was problem one...why do I need to initiate a 2nd call if you're "monitoring" it. Surely you can see it didn't fix itself.

After calling back I was told a technician will call to schedule a repair appointment in 48 hours. 2 weeks go by - no call but got an email stating what had been done so far and that I would get a call in 48 hours. 48 hours late - still no call, so I called them and was advised a tech would be scheduled in 48 hours. Within a day I got a call to schedule a tech who would arrive IN ABOUT A MONTH. This means the inverter will have been dead for a total of 3 MONTHS when someone actually does look at it. Now I'm worried that I'll need to wait another 3 months if a new inverter needs to be ordered and installed... Horrible customer service...either their systems fail at an inordinate rate thus tying up all the tech or they don't have enough techs and don't care.

I purchased an expensive system from a supposedly top of the line company. This has been incredibly disappointing. I still hope someone at Sunpower proves me wrong. But for now, wish I had chosen a different company. Buyer beware.

Original Review: Our one and a half year old SunPower Solar Panels have stopped recording/reporting. We have no way of knowing if this is a panel malfunction or a communication malfunction. Two calls to Tech support at SunPower have yielded zero results. They seem uninterested in helping us solve the problem. Our original vendor went our of business so we can't contact them. We tried several times, by phone and email to contact another vendor recommended by SunPower - and they have failed to respond. A third vendor we tried to contact also seems to have gone out of business.

When we purchased our solar panels, we were convinced that they were the best on the market. However, if we can't get them fixed when they stop working, what good are they? I'm very disappointed with SunPower's customer service and very frustrated. I would suggest others look to a different company when considering a purchase.

I called Customer Service multiple times and troubleshooting the problem with them didn’t resolve the issue so they tell me to call the people that installed the System (Skyline) so I call them and they tell me they can’t come out to check it without a work order so I call SunPower up again and they tell me that isn’t true. Well after a long lengthy conversation trying to understand why I should have to call for someone to fix this problem I’m told I could have out of Pocket expenses if the warranty doesn’t cover the problem. My Wife and I recently purchased a home that had a SunPower lease attached to it at time of purchase. Initially we were excited to be using solar and the benefits it would provide, but we would soon find out that we were mistaken. The System has never worked, we have received other peoples bills and information, and it is almost impossible to get someone on the phone to discuss the issues. We have called in several times to find a solution and their call center in the Philippines (where their direct calls are routed), the consultants are very nice but unable to escalate to someone in the states or to a manager of any kind. We have even been unable to lock down a time to get a service person to come to look at the system. Currently we are paying our full electricity bill as well as our lease for SunPower. I would not recommend this company as it stands today.

It goes on informing me that someone will call to give me an appointment. I have to wait 2 weeks and called them back informing them that nobody called. These went on for 3 weeks after I got a call sometime in September that it's going to be Nov.25.

I was upset but what else can I do? I waited for the date with the time supposed to be 2 pm, nobody came. Some of the questions I had were answered and some of them weren't and they referred me to other places, but I'm satisfied with the people who summed it out.

Also, SunPower broke my electric bill way down. I was going on a monthly basis with the electric company where they would calculate how much for the year I spent and they would break it down into 12 equal payments. Even though I leased the panels with SunPower, my bill is still cheaper than what I was paying. I'm saving $50 a month and I feel like I can do a lot more stuff because I have a lot more money in my pocket. I'm 100% satisfied.

We called and they did a remote assessment and figured that the micro inverters might be the issue. They said 3-4 weeks. It's now been 6 weeks and they say there is a supply problem. In the meantime we are accruing an electrical bill with PG&E. This could have been dealt with back in March or earlier when I responded that there is a problem with the system or the data was arriving slower than normal. The system was very expensive and now after 2 years it's not working. And the customer service is definitely lacking.

Being an electrician, I know how solar works, and I went for it to save money. SunPower was the first one to call when we started deciding on a company, and they came out and explained everything. We had to go through some paperwork to get our rebates, and then they took care of everything. They did everything they said they were gonna do. And after hearing other people not using SunPower, I’m glad we went with them. They’re a good company and their equipment is better. And their installation is clean. My son went with PosiGen, and they had to come back three or fours times to clean things up. They left screws in the driveway. The guys that installed mine were in and out in two days, and nothing was left to chance. Everything was marked correctly.

However, setting it up took almost six months, but it’s more of the town holding it up. You have to apply for all kinds of permits, then they have to come in and check your structures. North Haven was just slow issuing permits and held it up almost three months. Wallingford might be easier because they have their own electric division. Another issue in North Haven is they don’t have a full-time electrical inspector, so they contract it out and things have to get on a different schedule to get inspected. But SunPower did everything they had to - all the plans and print. Now, our highest bill with SunPower has been $12, and that’s just to use the UI's power lines. It’s not even using their power, but their delivery charges are crazy. We also have a side company that if we don’t have enough with SunPower, we have close to a thousand hours in bank with the UI.

I talked to a lot of companies with different prices and different products, and SunPower had an excellent solar panel. They were rated very highly for installation. The price wasn’t the best, but it was feasible. Dealing with the customer service was also painless. I’ve had a little bit of problem with the monitor, which is fixed now. I’m happy with the number of watts I’m getting.

The year before I got it, my average electric bill was $132. And two months of that was almost $300, but it was really hot for a long time. I lease the system so I knew what my normal cost was. I knew it was gonna go up. And SunPower quoted 107 or something, leased. So, I’m putting no money in it. Before they installed it I replaced the felt for my roof under the area that they were going to be installing. Because all these houses are 30 years old and really should have it all replaced. And Kirsten, the agent, was extremely knowledgeable, straightforward, no BS, just clear, which I like. So, everything together made it look like an okay deal. Good enough that I picked with them over all the other people I’ve talked to.

I like having solar. The monitor works fine now. I check it every few days. I used to check it almost every day just to see. My electricity bill now is typically $10 a month, plus the $107 fee, but I expect it to stay that way. If I ever have to replace my air conditioner, I’ll put one in that’s more efficient, which will basically get rid of any cost increase from the electric company.

I’ve referred SunPower six people on my street. I know practically everybody here in my local area because I’m a general contractor for most of the houses, and several of them have talked to SunPower. One or two are not getting it because it didn’t make economic sense. The one at the end of the street is from Wisconsin and they’re gone, not the whole summer, but maybe five or six months of the hot part of the year. So, it doesn’t make sense because it’s mainly the air conditioning. One person has installed it, and my next-door neighbor is probably going to.

Beware of SunPower. They use junk parts. I have had sunpower solar for going on 3 years now. This past year my production is way down, my NEM for PGE is already at $800 for this year. I called Hooked On Solar and they told me it’s most likely the microinverters on the panels. A work order has been open by sunpower to replace the inverters. Hooked on solar told me it’s out of their hands and is a Sunpower issue. I was told by sunpower they would give me an initial $200 for the inconvenience, but they are not responsible for the lack of power the panels are making.

I called sunpower again today for update and they said no parts until at least January. What’s the point of solar? I’m losing money. I have since received a $200 check which they are trying to trick me into releasing power system claims to date (I won’t be cashing). I can’t get a hold of anyone who seems to care and I’m sure Sunpower is doing new installs, but won’t help out a current customer because there’s no money in it. I noticed their sales team so nice, but once they get paid don’t care much about you.

My family had 21 solar panels installed on our roof and two Tesla PowerWall batteries installed in our garage just in time to be ready for the PG&E electrical grid shutdown of late October 2019. We are very happy with the investment. Because we decided to purchase rather than lease the system, and because it is a long term capital improvement to our home, it was important to us to consolidate the equipment purchase, the installation, future service, and warranty protection into one transaction with one entity that was likely to be around for years to come. We heard too many stories of people who bought panels from companies that are now out of business, and had their panels installed by subcontractors who cannot be found, and now the customers are holding worthless warranties.

SunPower by Hooked on Solar best met all of these concerns. Our contact at the company was Nicole, who is knowledgeable and professional and did not just “sell” us the system but has remained in touch and responsive to our every question to this day. It is a long process (largely because of demand and local permit requirements), and everyone from the company — planners, panel installers, battery installers, etc. — has been punctual, courteous, and highly competent. We could not be more pleased with our decision to use SunPower by Hooked on Solar.

After many, many calls the system was finally completely repaired 21 weeks after the original system failure. No one ever called to give me a status update, therefore I had to call them frequently to finally get this job scheduled. One of the main reasons for this lengthy delay is that Sunpower has an inadequate number of trained repair teams for the Northern California area. The frustration factor was greatly compounded by the fact that Sunpower failed to communicate status of the repair job. This was a terrible experience.

It took over a month to get someone out to take a look at the problem and another two months to get it repaired. We generated no solar power from June until October of 2018. The second problem occurred in June, 2019. I notified Sunpower of the problem and waited about two weeks before I received an email from them notifying me of the problem. They sent me some info to resolve the issue which was identical to what I had already read online and tried with their phone service person. We've been trading calls and emails since. I just received an email scheduling a service call on November 13. Their service is absolutely unacceptable. I'd remove the system in a minute if I didn't have a 16 years left on a 20 year lease.

I just cancel my entire house purchase because builder representative express direct threat and verbal ultimatum extortion that I either buy house with SunPower or they wouldn't sell me my house already in escrow. SunPower fail to inform me and provide with mandatory regulatory disclosure Solar Consumer Protection rights that been published in January 2019 following ABA 171 approval.

This document clearly indicate that consumer have the rights to chose his solar panels and company. SolarPower fail to disclose their panel price break down and disclosed kickback they pay to builder for granting unfair, unjust exclusivity. Furthermore I study company product and realized that they installing less productive X series panels with 315 KWH instead of their newest much more efficient A series panel with 400 KWH. I spoke with other builders who inform me that as customer I am not mandated to have solar if their cost exceeding alleged unverified benefits. In my case my current $60 monthly PGE bill doesnt justify their monthly lease charge of $100 plus.

SunPower engaged in questionable corrupt practice in gross violation of consumer protection rights depriving me of my unbiased selection of panel type and vendor selection not mention failure to disclose rights and their obligations. Looks like class action claim is way over due considering volume of complains. Needless to say I cancel my escrow and purchase of new house after SunPower reject and void my signed under duress contract imposed on me against my free will.

We went through Stellar Solar, who’s a SunPower dealer. My son had their service and told me that their salesman was awesome, and that after it in two years, he would still answer calls and help him with anything, and that interested me. So, I called them. And while I had already talked to 3 or 4 other different companies and got bids, SunPower has better equipment and it was even cheaper than the other companies. I enrolled with them and it was very simple. They handled everything and all I had to do was to sign paperwork. The customer service representatives were very courteous and we had excellent interactions.

Now, we don’t have to worry about running the air conditioner more or how much we have to pay SDG&E. I'm very satisfied in my decision to go solar and I would tell other people to go with SunPower as well. In fact, I’ve already signed up two of my friends with SunPower. One of them will be having the installation this week while the other one is just waiting for their homeowner association to give them the okay.

They're charging me for the service and for the delivery. They end up double charging me. People in PSE&G's area have to be careful because there's really not a lot of savings. I already had a quote for solar panels, and wasn’t impressed, and chose not to do it. So, that’s kinda where it was. I led him in the door and we talked. And he told me good information, so I signed up.

The rep follows up and sends me birthday cards. He's a very personable person, almost like you feel like you’ve known him all your life. At first, we had some problems with one of the inverters, and it wasn’t working right, and then, all of a sudden, in the mail, here comes two credit cards for $300 each, and SunPower saying that because of the trouble, this is what you get. Then, at the end of the year, we got another check for almost 140 bucks, and that was because we didn't get what we were promised. So, that shocked me as well. I enthusiastically chose SunPower and had our panels installed in early 2017. My first 18 months with the panels were just great, exactly what I had hoped for. There was some degradation (10%) during the course of that time, but of course I expected it and was okay with it. However, there was a problem with the panels in fall of 2018 which required a service visit. Following the service visit, my panels have only been producing 40% of the energy that they were producing in the same months in 2017 and 2018. I reported this to SunPower at least twice and there were technicians who showed up at our house and say - "everything looks good from our end, perhaps the shading from the trees has changed".

Given where our panels are installed, I can imagine a 2-5% change from shading, but nowhere near 60%. I've now given it the full summer where the sun is directly overhead our panels, and yup, we're only getting 40% of what we were earlier. I hope someone from SunPower looks at this and cares about a customer who enthusiastically spent $30,000+ on their product. As of now, I am very dissatisfied with my experience.

The techs arrived today at 7:50am. I spoke to Justin around 9:40 and he stated that he checked the wires on my roof and they were "fine". I reminded him of what tech James had told me from the previous visit and he reiterated that the wires were fine, but my inverter wasn't working. While he was looking at the inverter box, I sent my son up with his camera and he spotted the cracked/burnt wires within a few seconds. We showed Justin the pics and his response was, "I didn't notice that". He went on to say that there were crossed wires in the inverter box and that is what caused the fuse to blow. I reminded him that James had found the bad wires, (which he stated were incorrect wires that had severely cracked due to weather) and that the faulty, cracked and burnt wires caused the arc which tripped the fuse.

James told me that he rigged the wiring inside of the inverter box so it would not be a fire hazard and could not be turned on. Now Justin has just removed what James did for my family's safety. He was all set to get the inverter box up and running with a new fuse with complete disregard to the unsafe wiring. I insisted that I speak to the supervisor, Trevor ** and he apologized for Justin's miscommunication. I asked how this could be a miscommunication when the bad wiring was detected by my son within a few seconds. He then apologized that Justin didn't 'understand' that he was there to redo the wiring to the panels. Strange, since the first thing Justin said to me was that the wiring looked just fine to him.

Now, it is September 7, 2019 and I have been without solar since November 28, 2018...almost a year later. I have been paying $137.04 a month for the last ten months and have received nothing in return but exasperation, missed appts, delays, frustration, and hours of my time. I have been without my air conditioning since July 15 as I now know my true-up bill in April will be through the roof! I want to be reimbursed for every month that I have paid for solar (ten months to date) and not the energy production guarantee. I do not want to be reimbursed in the form of gift cards. Do I pay Sunpower with gift cards? No, of course not. Supervisor Trevor stated that he would try to get the old team lead 'James' out here next Saturday, if he was still working for Sunpower.

I want James back as he was the only honest tech and I want reimbursement for the full ten months (probably more by the time it is actually fixed). Do not offer gift cards and do not offer less than what I have paid Sunpower for a product that I have not received any benefit from all this year and December last year. This could have all been avoided by:

    1. Sunpower using the correct wiring.
    2. Sunpower notifying me immediately when the system went down. I had to notify them.
    3. Sunpower fixing the problem immediately instead of long delays between communications and appointments.

    4. Sunpower hiring a second tech who was diligent and honest. It really should have been fixed by the first tech.

Now, Sunpower needs to do the right thing and reimburse me for my monthly costs of $137.00 a month which I paid in a timely manner every month for the last ten months for which I have received no service.

I will start by saying the installation process with SunPower was excellent. They installed the panels quickly and were very responsive. A 3.5 years later we need someone to come out and fix our system. I called on 8/26 and spoke with a very helpful customer support person. She walked me through some troubleshooting steps and we determined someone would have to come out to service our system. This is where things went downhill. I was told I would receive a call within 10 days to schedule an appointment for someone to come out and fix our system. I was assured that it would most likely be less than 10 days to receive this call. This was odd. Why can’t they schedule it on this first call? Anyway, I thank her for the attempt at fixing it and waited for the call.

Fast forward to mid-day 9/6, day 10. No call, no email, no communication. So I call and speak with another customer service person. This person informs me that they ordered the parts to fix my system and that I would have to wait another two weeks before they could schedule an appointment. At this point I feel like I am getting the runaround. No one mentioned anything about ordering parts. When I pressed him for more information about why I now have to wait potentially another 10 days for a scheduling phone call after waiting 10 days for a scheduling call that never came. He very condescendingly reiterated what he said about the parts. I thanked him for that info and hung up. We’ve been without Solar for 3 weeks now and SunPower doesn’t really seem to care.

How do they know what parts they need if they haven’t come out to see what’s broken? Why can’t you make an appointment if you know what you need to fix and have parts? After reading reviews it seems that SunPower has turned into yet another Solar company that takes your money, puts panels on your roof and wishes you the best as they laugh all the way to the bank. Should have waited for the Tesla roof.

When SolarOne put the solar in, my husband and I felt they didn't do it for the size of the house. They did it for the consumption purposes, of what we consume, and that's incorrect because we've only been here a year. We don't have our true cost from our electricity. That was never explained to us. We've been contemplating solar for the last five to seven years but we had been saying no all along because we thought it was a big joke. But our friends told us they had a $10 bill. But in our case, I haven't seen that. We're really very disappointed. SunPower, on the other hand, did a great job. The process with them was painless and easy. We don't have any problems with the finance end of it. We're going back and forth with SunPower and SolarOne. It's not SunPower's fault but I hope they work with us. If they do, that would be amazing.

Personally, I still feel that it is absolute insane that SunPower doesn't offer homeowners in my community the opportunity to BUY their solar panels; only to forever-lease them. And that you MUST get solar panels in order for the home to appraise (or so I was told). But aside from all of that, the company specialists themselves have been some of the absolute kindest people I've dealt with through this home buying/building process. Especially Heather. She's a gem. Thank you!

I've had an awesome experience with SunPower thus far. I worked with TECO Electric, our local electrical company in North Carolina, and checked SunPower's history. I made sure they won't go anywhere and checked their service records. I decided to go with them and within 40 days, everything got set up and running. Currently, I trade my power bill for power loans. TECO took my average power for the year and built me a system that would give me 100% of my power based on my usage for a year and that's the price of my loan. It's around $30 more than the price of my power bill but I'm okay with that for the fact that in 10 years, Duke Power is gonna raise their percentages 10-fold compared to what I'm paying now. It's not gonna matter as I'll get my rebate and I'll be good to go. Thus far, I've already referred SunPower to other people and they're getting systems put on their homes.

I decided to go solar for multiple reasons. I knew PG & E would be passing on the costs of the multiple fires in CA to their customers and I would be retiring in 2 years. I didn’t want to have a continual raising monthly PG & E bill at retirement. 2) I have a Leaf, (electric car) & a plug in for it in my garage. I wanted to decrease my monthly costs for charging it. 3) I wanted to do it for the environment & it seemed so logical because we have so much sun.

I was hesitant to choose Sun Power because I had heard people had problems with the installation piece from having contractors do their installations. But by the time I had mine placed, they had hired their own employees to install. I liked the young crew very much, & head electrician because they seemed to take a lot of pride in their work. I liked all the people I spoke with over the 4 month process. When it didn’t pass inspection, Sunpower remedied the requirement quickly. Jessica was especially helpful coordinating the entire process. I liked that the panels are locally made in Richmond, CA. I love the apps & internet applications. Thank you.

However, we had a Generac whole home 20-kilowatt generator and there was a fair amount of discussions and issues about getting that compatible with the solar system -- that is an area that they may run into more people that has that combination. Also, the monitoring software does not always pick up the data correctly, but, other than those, the system is great. I'm very satisfied with my decision to go solar.

Other than that, I’m really happy with my decision to go solar and I’ve been tracking my system's performance carefully. We are leasing our panels through Sunpower. In 2018 (the second year of our lease) the monitor stopped recording data. Numerous calls to Sunpower were ignored. I finally contacted Kurios Energy (installer) who came out quickly and replaced the monitor. Kurios seemed to believe the missing data would be restored. There were 6 months of missing data. I contacted Sunpower several times and was told ultimately that missing data could not be recovered. Unfortunately my 2nd year true-up was 4 times the first year and of course I had no way to determine if, in fact, the panels were producing anything. My contract says Sunpower will pay &0.16/kWh if production does not meet expectations. According to the monitor our production for the 2nd year was 7,317.00kWh.

That is 9,501 kWh less than promised. Today I received my annual production report and Sunpower claims we produced 16,760 kWh. They claim production was just 58 kWh short of promised production. I completely expected Sunpower would try to get out of their contractual obligation but I am stunned that they have manufactured production data to avoid paying. This isn't over. After reading reviews this does seem to be a pattern with Sunpower. Buyer Beware.

Thanks to Sunpower reaching out to me there seems to be a resolution that matters. I believe they are aware of the challenges with their off shore customer support and are working hard to make corrections. The panels themselves, with the micro-inverters are superior. In less than 2 months of production I actually generated more electricity than I produced, which resulted in a $700 check back from the power company. I don't know why anyone would NOT get solar. Sunpower will be the company I recommend first when I talk with friends.

SunPower had people going door to door in the neighborhood. I decided to look into solar energy because I thought it was the right thing to do for the environment. I do believe in global warming. However, I’m not satisfied because of all the problems we’ve had. I’ve had two incidents of them not working. Two months after we’ve put the system in, the inverter had a problem, and it shut down. And it took 31 days to get someone to come to the house to look at it, to re-cycle it. Now, they reimbursed me for some money.

However, the system went down again. I called and they said, “It will be 7 to 10 business days before somebody gets out there.” So, somebody was there in about 10 days. And they went and said, “The inverter is shot. We’re gonna have to order an inverter and we’re gonna have to take care of it.” And so, it had taken another month to get an inverter. And yesterday, they finally were able to come in and they replaced the inverter. I have the power working again. But, instead of saving money, it’s costing me money. And it upsets me when 2 out of 15 months, it doesn’t work. I don’t think that’s a good record.

And then someone called me from SunPower when we were up in the White Mountains here in Arizona and said, “We’re not selling this stuff anymore, from the company we’re getting before.”, where I got my stuff from. And that scares me. They also said, “Because we sent you some kind of a check that can’t be passed on, you gotta give us a different address and it’ll take four to six weeks to get here.” And we’re not four to six weeks being here. I’m disappointed. Everything in solar was I thought it would be a good thing, but not necessarily just for me. Because it’s not necessarily a great thing if you decide to sell the house 10 years down the road and people decide whether they wanna keep it or not. And I’ve gotta pay for this and that.

But the salesperson that I got had been very good. However, every time I called SunPower, they’d say they’d get right on it, but they contracted out through Titan. And when I talked to the guys from Titan, they were really busy. And then, when I talked to them the first time, I said, “We got your inverter working, but we’re having a lot of problems with them.” And they were battling with the company, whoever makes the inverters, to get to replace the inverters.

I live in Tucson and they're a Phoenix company, and I went with a Phoenix company ‘cause I’ve lived up there for a long time. I’ve had solar before when I lived in the Phoenix area and I had a hot water system with them. I regret not going with the Tucson company. Because everybody that comes out to work on it comes out of Phoenix. And of course, they don’t tell you that when you buy it.

I again waited until day 11 and had to call again. This time they told me someone would be contact me to schedule a time to send a team out to install the replacement parts. When someone finally contacted me, they said I was scheduled for August 19th. That was almost 3 months from my initial contact with SunPower. Today, they came out to install the replacement parts and they said they could not install because of all the bird excrement under the panels.

At no time during this 3 month ordeal was I given any notice that I would have to clear the panels of any debris. I could not find anyone in the Albuquerque area to service the SunPower system. I got back on the chat system and after shutting down the system, again, which did not resolve the issue (again) they had me go to a website to find a service company.

When I but in the zip codes for the Albuquerque area no options were available. I then called SunPower and ask them to walk me through the trouble shooting to determine what part was bad. I am an Electrical Engineer and was willing to pinpoint the problem and have SunPower send me the replacement part to install. The person had me shut the system down (again #3) and when this did not fix the problem (again) told me they would contact the regional manager for CST to see who should service the system. I explained that CST was out of business and they would not get a response. I am in my 3rd year with SunPower. The contract stated that I would get a reimbursement (TrueUp) check each year if the system failed to produce the amount of power they committed to in the contract. In early 2018 I called customer service to find out where/when I would be getting this amount for 2017. I was told that those reimbursements were already made out earlier and that mine couldn't be calculated because 1 of my inverters wasn't reporting data. After several months and numerous calls with Customer Support, I finally got the inverter replaced. Then I had to start all over again requesting the reimbursement and finally got it late 2018. I kept asking why didn't their monitoring system detect this and notify me proactively that a repair was needed.

Well, guess what, now it is 2019 and SunPower Not Reporting data, Version 2.0 . Same thing. One of the inverters wasn't down and needed to be replaced before my reimbursement could be calculated and sent. Again after several calls to customer support, and withholding my monthly lease payments for 3 months, I finally got the inverter replaced. Now Jermaine (Supervisor, Customer Service) says that the package for my reimbursement was sent to Wells Fargo to a prepaid card to be sent and that I needed to contact them to find out where it is. WOW! Now that is the worst sidestep I have been given from any company.

I spoke with Wells Fargo. They have not received anything from SunPower for me since 2018. Early in this disaster, I was told that they couldn't calculate it until the inventor was repaired. Now I am told that, "It was sent to Wells Fargo, so go get it yourself." The inverter wasn't replaced until July 2019. So SunPower lies to me again! So now I am back to not paying my monthly payments to get someone's attention again. I wonder if anyone there understands what "Customer Service" really means. Oh, now they send me emails saying they are going to charge me a late fee if I don't make my payment on time. Can I charge them an 8-month late fee for delays on my reimbursement?

SunPower panels are OK but their Combiner Boxes are old technology that won't allow you to monitor each panel's performance and output. If you try to upgrade to an Enhanced Enphase Combiner Box, SunPower will void your system warranty. Make sure whichever company you go with that their system offers monitoring of each individual solar panel. I firmly advise buyers to steer clear of SunPower with their outdated system setups.

Months of e-mails and phone calls and still no fix. I have instituted a investigation request with UL labs over the safety and listing of these electrical products, required for installation here in Massachusetts under the National Electrical Code NFPA 70. I would now recommend SunPower to others.

    Original Review: July 12, 2019

MY SUNPOWER System was installed and serviced at first by Photon BROS. I was happy for year 1 with 5 KWh system providing energy worth the high cost or so I thought. Year 2-3 has been worst. I went from no cost annually to $2200 electric bill in year 2 and 575 and counting this year. Panels, inverters and many other items have failed and been replaced only to fail and be replaced again. 21 panels in my system and 1/2 have been replaced. I am a reliability engineer and the reliability data on the system that I have must be faulty as my experience has been just awful.

I was recently told all panels would be replaced and instead have new set of inverters installed. I am awaiting the restart of the system, but I would never buy SunPower panels again. I am disgusted with the company response and the quality of the panels is horrific. Not a happy customer and so sorry that I went with SUNPOWER. May have to get an attorney engaged and work to get my over 25,000 investment refunded.

    Updated review: Oct. 12, 2019

Sun Power did a great job of making things once I got someone to replace my inverter to include analyzing my past production and compensating me for the lost production while waiting for the inverter replacement. If I would not have been terribly frustrated trying to get in touch with someone knowledgeable who could take some action and set an appointment for me in the early stages, I'd have never given a low rating and would update my rating to 5 stars. However, the first level of customer service needs improvement and took too much of my initiative to get through for me to give the last star even now. I will continue to recommend the Sun Power product as we have been nothing but happy with it despite this single bad experience.

    Original Review: July 10, 2019

We had a solar array installed by SunPower five years ago. Of course, the necessary inverter was in included. At the end of April, the inverter failed. Solar panels are useless without a functioning inverter. Any inverter sold in California must have a 10-year warranty at a minimum, so my inverter is under warranty which SunPower has acknowledged. It's great that they agree that my inverter is under warranty, and that they will replace it. However, getting them to replace it is a part-time job. I have spent two months following up with them to try and get my inverter replaced. I had an appointment for 1 July, but they were a no show. Nothing like having a 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. appointment window and have the guy not show up.

Clearly, I wasted a day of my life only to be stood up by a company that I paid thousands of dollars to. The best part is that I still have not received a call from the company. I have to call them to find out what happened, and I they tell me that the technician called in sick. Maybe he did, but no one called, and I must have had the last appointment of the day, so it wasn't like there wasn't time to call me. For the last ten days, I've called the customer service number which is clearly on another continent, and they don't give them any ability/authority to do anything. All they do is send emails to some "mystery" department that is supposed to call me but never does. I tried emailing the person who sold me the panels, and he cannot help me despite the fact that he still works for SunPower.

Their way of providing is to give no one the power to solve your power while also not making it anyone's fault because they can't help you. This is the most frustrated and disrespected I've ever felt in my life and I paid someone my hard-earned money to treat me this way. I went with SunPower because they are more efficient than other panels, but they aren't so efficient that I can have them not produce for two months in the spring/summer months. I only give a second star because I do get electricity when I have a fully functioning system. If I were to rate this company's ability to stand behind its product and provide I would not give any stars.

My wife and I recently met with a sales rep from Sunpower who was pushing us to lease panels. Sunpower is all over our neighborhood. We were given a lot of inaccurate information. Examples:

-We were told leased panels increase the value of our home. We later learned they cannot be included in the appraised value of our home.
-We were quoted a system that produces 115% of our prior 12 months energy usage despite the fact the ComEd Net metering program only allows 110%
-We were told the excess energy production would produce a credit that would eliminate the customer charge and standard meter charges. ComEd states the credits do not apply to those charges.

-We also learned that Sunpower is giving our Village Board members "preferred pricing" on their leases. (This was said in writing in an email from the sales rep.)

Hearing that they were giving elected officials discounts not available to others was the last straw and helped us decide not to do business with them.

After months of back and forth with SunPower they said they would replace all panels (24). Then they reversed the decision claiming out of warranty. If it were one or two panels it would be one thing. But the fact that nearly all 24 are appearing damaged would point to a possible manufacturing defect. NO SunPower rep has come to look. I contacted the installer about the problem and they contacted SunPower and a case number was assigned to look into the problem. Apparently, all warranty issues have to be reviewed by SunPower before the contractor can even come back out to look at the solar system. I have called customer service numerous times to get updates on the case number and have been told each time that the problem is being looked into and that the technical support team will get back to me and my installer once they determine the problem and course of action.

The lack of communication and length of time it is taking to get any information as to what technical issues are being reviewed by the technical support team is unacceptable for a newly installed solar system that appears to be defective. I have requested to speak with someone on the technical support team to get information on what is being done to resolve the problem but have been told that I need to wait until they contact me. At this point, I am a very unsatisfied customer and would not recommend SunPower based on my experience described above.

I am writing this because we are very dissatisfied with the service we have received from SunPower Solar customer service. We really do like our solar panels, which were installed in 2015, but for whatever reason, SunPowers customer service has become "HORRENDOUS". Anyone thinking of installing solar, should think long and hard before using this company. I should make it clear, that their product is good, but their service is terrible, and I am not referring to the men working in the field, just all the office employees you have to deal with.

Between November 2018 and April 2019, our system has gone off line twice. On November 28, 2018 we received an email stating that we would be receiving a pre-paid MasterCard for $330.00 for compensation, then shortly after that we would receive another for $300.00 for our inconvenience. This email was received after the first time our system went down. Absolutely "0" restitution was offered after the 2nd time it went down. Originally we were OK with that, but now we "Are Not" because we never received the 2nd card, and that is where all our problems started. Almost 6 months and 5 phone calls later ----- Still Nothing.

All they do is switch you from one person to another, and you have to explain the whole problem over and over again. They are forever putting you on hold (one time I actually waited 55 mins before they picked up again). I have asked to speak with a manager many times and that is impossible. Every time I called, I was told "they are all in a meeting" go figure!! The highest I ever got was a case manager (I won't mention his name online) but he lied to me, more than once. They are just playing games, and hoping I will give up!

Every time there is an issue and we call their customer service, it is 7-10 days before we even get a call to set up an appointment. The last time they were out to repair, they said our inverter was actually an out of date inverter for when it was installed. So we didn’t receive the most current equipment at the time of installation. During the last service call, he said if it stops working again, call them right away and they will come out immediately to replace it.

Well, it stopped again and we called, again, and were told it would be 7-10 days before we would receive a callback. We asked to speak with a supervisor and that request was declined. SunPower has the worst customer service process I have ever seen. In addition, we went an entire year, unknowingly, without 1/2 of our panels connected.
