In part, our decision was based on reducing the impact our all-electric home imposes on the environment. Since the power we draw from the grid is virtually all derived from hydroelectric sources, the reduced load we put on the grid is more modest that if our utility relied on fossil fuels. But we hope to set an example for others. Likewise we are interested in energy storage, as the costs decline and these systems improve.

We wanted to save money. I found that owning was better than renting. It adds to the value when you sell but takes away value when you rent. The service and people couldn't have been better. They explained everything and we asked tons of questions. Helped finance for a year with no interest if paid by period ending. They are a great company and we couldn't be happier with our choice.

I was all set to go with another solar provider. Then a buddy of my friend's daughter needed some repair with the solar. Not only did Todays Energy Store go out and do the repair, but they also put the solar in at the Father's house so good reports. I had them come out and their proposal, warranty, and the actual panels themselves seemed better than the competitor that I was getting ready to go. They showed me the difference between theirs versus somebody else's, and all that was good.

The installation went great. Then after the system had been running for just a little while, somebody in a managerial position from SunPower reached out to me and said that Todays Energy Store, the installer, did the calculations wrong of what was gonna be provided and with the energy that I would be getting. They didn't put the panels in the right place. He said to ensure that, they would send me a check for $6,700. I called Todays Energy Store and told them about it. The guy said they would fix it and that SunPower took that money out of my account. This guy was not happy with SunPower and with me, ‘cause I told him that I'm not leaving $6,700 on the table. He wasn't thrilled.

I feel that SunPower did the right thing because my energy production may be meeting what the contract says, but it's not the way it should be. From now till the fall, I won't be building up any credits because the sun is moving and it's not hitting the panels the way that it should. But then come January, I start building up credits like crazy. The problem is the credits, it seems really good, because of the bad energy, they’re only paying nine cents per kilowatt hour. It's very little so I'm gonna get ready to see over the next six months again how this all plays out.

I'm very happy with SunPower. Had they not told me about the issue, I would probably be a really pissed off person because I wasn't getting what I thought. I just feel I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with the fact that I don't know if I have an issue with the actual installer, Todays Energy, or how happy he's gonna be coming out to fix it. But I feel like if I have an issue, SunPower will find somebody else. That's my hope.

One other thing, I wanted to put SunPower solar panels on the camper. I had a heck of a time. I reached out to Todays Energy, ‘cause they make a solar panel that can either put on a camper or can have a mount for it. I ended up getting a Renogy and it's working good. It's 100 watts and I'm probably gonna buy a couple more. But I reached out to SunPower through their website, through phone calls, and it was extremely difficult to try to purchase a separate panel for a camper.

We built a new house. With the environmental impact and with the incentive programs that are going on in Illinois, the Illinois Shines Program, it makes it pretty much a no-brainer to go solar. The install process with SunPower was relatively easy. Certasun is a great organization to work with. They walked us through the whole process and they did all the paperwork and the complexities involved with the rebates and their equipment and warranty. Their work was fantastic. There was another set of neighbors in our neighborhood that got solar done by another company and they were already having problems with the panels fogging. So it was a night-and-day difference with SunPower with the equipment they used and their warranty.

I went with SunPower after reading about the company and the product. It had a lot of good reviews and ratings, and I liked the warranty and that they service it. The guy I talked to also said it was made in America. The installation went fine except the guy at the end didn't really make it clear to me that even though it was installed, we weren't connected with PG&E. I was still getting charged from PG&E even though I had the solar on my roof. That was not really communicated to me. So after it was installed, I'm thinking we're good to go here. I'm running my air conditioner more than I normally would have. And then a couple of weeks, I get a thing from PG&E saying I need to do this final step before it's all official. So, I wish that had been communicated to me better.

Also, the whole process took longer than I anticipated. My experience with the Hooked On Solar aside for the initial setting up to talk about it and make the sale, they were on point at that stage. Then after I signed the deal, the communication dropped off and was very poor after that. I had to kind of stay on top of them. "What's going on? When are they gonna get installed?" I was pretty disappointed with that part of the whole thing. The guy seemed very helpful and knowledgeable before I signed the deal. Then afterwards, it's like it takes him five days to get back to me. I'd even have to send another email or text message to prod him to respond. So that was pretty frustrating.

The guy was very friendly at first. I just felt like after he made the sale, he didn't really care too much like he's on to the next thing. I've experienced that a lot with sales people. They're going out chasing the next commission. I was also promised a $500 refund saying, "Oh, if you sign it today, you'll get this $500 refund," which I haven't. I got an email and a text message from him saying I would get it, and I'm still waiting for that. He said it's four to six weeks after the installation, and it's been past that and I still haven't received it. Overall, the installation guys were courteous and seemed to know what they were doing and did a good job. But some of the communication could be improved on. Other than that, the panels are good and everything will be warrantied. That's the impression I got.

SunPower has been great. I've been looking into solar energy for quite some time. Then I ran across the company that's sold the product, SolarTech. And just talking to them, I liked what they were talking about and I made my decision. I researched quite a few. SolarTech came out and gave us an estimate. We did most of it over the phone and then they finally came out and did the schematic, and then we agreed on it, and they installed it.

I overbuilt the system. My power company owes me money. They give me somewhat of a credit, but it's not much. I didn't realize that the rate for what they're giving you credit for is what they pay per kilowatt hour for power. Currently, according to them, they're only paying a penny and a half a kilowatt-hour for power from local generations. At the end of the year, they owed me $10, so it wasn't anything major. I thought it was gonna be a little better than that. I still won't trust the power companies, so I'm glad to have solar and not have to rely on them. After our installation, my son-in-law shopped around and he ended up going with SolarTech SunPower as well.

Our account was initially setup for autopay. Every month we get a late charge fee from Sunpower billing. We have been calling every month because Sunpower seems to be unable to fix this problem itself created. Every time we ask why billing department can't fix it they answer with apologies and assurance to remove late charge fee, and with some incoherent mumbling. And then next month the story repeats again. This has been a nightmare ever since we bought this brand new house. In the past we had Solar through Sunstreet and never had a problem. We wish we could go back. Very disappointing.

I debated for a long time whether to get solar power from my house. My first looked, it was going to take a great deal of space in my garage just for the battery packs. Many years later the second company was just a small box in the garage, but I still wasn’t ready. Then here comes SunPower! No converter boxes in the garage! Each panel has its own converter! The installation went almost exactly as planned. I couldn’t be happier. Just got my first electric bill and SURPRISE, 0 due. That alone was a savings of $192.00 per month! I am so happy. I love being able to look up the energy being created at any time on my iPhone. I’m so glad I waited for the right company!

There are some people out there that are not doing great work and they're not using very good panels. You need to get it done because you're gonna save a lot of energy and reduce your carbon footprints and emissions. The tax credit was not a bad thing either and that's gonna go away shortly in 2022. We went with SunPower because they had the highest rating for quality and performance and due to the limited area on our roof, their higher efficiency panels worked perfectly. We were a little nervous when the panels started producing 28% less energy than they should have produced, but after some time, SunPower stood behind their products and replaced 21 of the 25 defective microinverters and even though payment for lost power is not covered under the warranty, they came through and compensated us above and beyond what we were asking! Very impressive! So far they have proven that they do stand behind their products.

We are very happy with SunPower and like the fact that they stood behind their products. The one item I do not like is the fact that they do not allow customers to see the full performance detail of their panels - they do not let them see the performance of each individual panel. Most other companies seem to let customers see full performance detail, but not SunPower. They say that it is our responsibility to report a performance issue to SunPower in order for them to respond, but it is very difficult to tell if one or so panels are not working by looking at the total production.

April 21st, I began the process of installation and given a project coordinator to make it happen. He said the permitting stage would take 2-3 weeks. I continue to ask him by email about progress but never get meaningful replies if he responds at all, which is seldom. I've tried calling, but he never answers the phone and never calls back. If it this hard to get a response from them before you pay, I'm having thoughts of not proceeding at all. No one needs this kind of frustration.

I wanted to decrease my electric bill. It was getting high in the summer months. So I decided to go solar. I looked at the degradation rates of different providers, and SunPower came on top. I talked to them and they gave me a competitive quote and I just went with them. The process was very easy. There were no issues at all. They gave me an estimate and all of the timelines. The second step was they called us, scheduled the installation and they came and installed it. They called to schedule an inspection from the city and the electric company and it was turned on. So far, so good. I feel good about it.

I had to call several times and spend hours on hold to get the lease transfer documents in the first place (I was repeatedly lied to and told I would receive the docs by X date, then nothing would happen and I would have to call again). Finally, once we signed and sent everything in, Sunpower promised to get the documents in today so we could close on time. Now Sunpower missed yet another deadline with no contact or any information whatsoever. I paid $300 for this solar lease transfer and want a refund, and if the home sale runs into any issues, I am going to hold Sunpower legally responsible for my losses.

I bought solar panels to increase distributed, renewable power generation in my community primarily. Due to Federal and State rebates and incentives, and my plan to stay in my house for over 10 years (loan agreement), it made sense to buy them vs lease, as my electric bill would be replaced by a solar loan payment (I used to pay about $150/month, with MA's SMART program incentive that pays for electric generation, my average loan payment is $150/month). I also liked SunPower's 25 year warranty, and high efficiency. Their app is very easy to use as well, and I check it frequently. I'd suggest starting the solar process in November/December, as it can take 3-6 months before you're connected and running due to scheduling, town and utility inspections. If sized correctly, you can produce more than you use starting in March through September, maybe October.

    Updated review: Sept. 25, 2020

The issue was finally resolved. The installer came out again and checked the physical connections and out and redid the connections. The system has been running since then. So from an equipment standpoint, they seem to work as advertised. I am still out a month and a half of power generation and do not like that monitoring is not active/alerting vs passive checking. That being said the issue as it applied to me was an installation failure, not a hardware failure. I will update my star rating to 2.5/3. Still not happy with the support of the product.

    Original Review: May 20, 2020

My SunPower system is less than 6 months old. It was installed in December 2019, stopped working April 7th @12:00 2020. Sunpower has been useless in resolving the issue. The installer has been on-site to check the system and said the inverters are not working and Sunpower support would escalate and take care of the issue. 15+ Days later, no contact from SunPower on status, ZERO communication. The installer has been far more helpful than the manufacturer. These systems are not cheap and while there are many people out there that have working systems when you get a lemon just expect zero support. I have to pay a note on a system that doesn't work and at the end of the year, I am going to have a huge PG&E NEMA bill because I am betting SunPower will not honor its guarantee.

After speaking to a supervisor that said Sunpower was trying to send the installer back out there to investigate (yeah let us make two trips rather than send the components to the installer to fix it the first time). I have requested someone from upper management contact me and was assured it would be in the next 2 business days. Based on my customer support and product experience with Sunpower I will not recommend them to anyone. Steer clear of this company. If you get lucky and the system works great if something breaks they are horrible to deal with and unresponsive.

SunPower said it was a free estimate on our company's website so I put my information and Thompson and Son Energy contacted me as an accredited dealer of SunPower. I liked their panels and all their energy things. They were also very thorough in explaining the federal tax credit and the Duke Energy rebate. They were also giving $1,000 rebate which I didn’t receive yet. It said that the SunPower representative gonna take care of it, but I really couldn't find the information to get my rebate through my company.

The installation of the panels was delayed for more than two months. It was the end of the year so a lot of things happened on their side and they were struggling to get building permits through the county because they were closed at the end of the year. They made a mistake on their side to installing the panel where it did not communicate to the monitoring system for about a month. They found out that some of the connectors were not connected and they had to work on that again, so they had to come to my house several times to figure out the problem and fix it.

The system is working really great. I only got charged for 83 kilowatt-hours in my first month. Then the next two months, I was charged for no electricity other than base fees that I had to pay to Duke Energy which was $15 per month. The monitoring system is slow to bring the actual information and the application was very buggy that I decided to uninstall it from my cellphone. I'd rather use the web interface. Other than that, the system is generating more power than I've expected. It’s communicating through the Duke Energy grid and that works really nice. The cost is not cheap but it's reasonable. I’m really satisfied with my decision.

A rep was set up at the hardware store near my house and I just happened to walk past her. It ended up being they can get me in with zero money down for $120 a month. The financing made it affordable for me to get into it again.

My electric bill in 2011 was $900 a month. I had to get solar and when I did, it took me out of the top tier. It dropped my electric bill enough that I can afford it. But whenever I’d seen these as affordable as they are, they took away my monthly payment of the rest of my energy and I'm producing more energy than I use, so I may upgrade my house to all electric. I've never had any problems with my original panels. I've only had these new panels for a month or two, but I am giving 5 kilowatt-hours per hour back to PG&E on the grid during the daytime, so I’m really happy with the output.

Help the environment--we were low electricity users already, so we weren't doing it for the economics. But we were planning on getting an electric car and installing PV seemed a good idea for lowering our carbon footprint. Our experience with SunPower was terrific--they made a clear proposal, went over all the details, answered all our questions, and the installation went smoothly. We've had the 8 panels for just over a year, and have produced slightly more electricity than we consumed in the household plus our electric car--just as predicted!

We wanted to set ourselves up so that when we retire our monthly operating costs are minimal and that is why we invested in Solar now -- that way the system is paid-off and our electric energy is FREE or next to free each year. We live in Central California where the summers are brutal and brutal power bills coincide with the brutal summer heat. Add a pool pump to that and power bills get outrageous quite quickly.

I am being told that it is a hardware problem on site and both times the reporting system has not improved. I further believe it is a software problem that your organization does not know how to address. Last year during sunny days I was monitoring energy production of two to three hundred percent over used energy. This year I am lucky is I hit one hundred fifty percent over usage. Plus I am not using any increased energy versus one year ago. But you have all these statistics on your site that is one reason. I think it is a software problem you refuse to address.

Between the summer heat and someone always being home with the AC on and the pool pumps our PGE bill easily came in much higher than we expected. After we did the math the 3 months of summer with PGE, would have paid for an entire year of solar payments. We went with Sun Power because the reviews were great and the product was great. Now we just have a solar payment which is much cheaper. The app is great were super happy with how everything came and works.

That is about $60 a month. During a sunny day, the system produces 2-4 times than my daily usage. This extra will cover on raining or cloudy days. On average, solar system produces enough energy or more than actual usage.

Luminalt came out and explained everything. They were like the central driving people, so I didn’t have to do anything. Then the crew showed up and put everything in within a couple of days. Something went wrong and they came back and fixed it right away. I haven’t had any trouble since then. I ended up financing them just because it was so expensive. But I then refinanced because I knew the payment was gonna go up. I also refinanced the house and just paid off the financing. I’m still gonna recoup what I’m doing within like five years.

We have red-eared slider turtles in the backyard so we have some power going with them because of heat and filters. We’re also on the coast so we have fogs and we are using a regular heater. Before our PG&E bill just kept going up without a reason. It was like 600 and some odd dollars a month and it went down to $29 sometimes since having SunPower. I just got the federal energy credit too.

The only thing that’s on me to check with them is when PG&E shuts off the power, there’s something that I can get on the house so that I can use power. But I don’t know if that has to do with some sort of generator. We just bought a generator just in case. If it was gonna be extra, it wouldn’t have mattered to add that feature to the house. Figured the generator would be a one-time thing. Overall, we really enjoy them. They’re wonderful. We’re 100% sold.

Updated on 05/20/2020: In addition after writing this original Consumer Affairs review, received an email saying they would follow up and again have not. I cannot believe the lack of integrity of this company!

Original Review: SunPower’s customer service is terrible. One of the main features that sold us on the SunPower Solar System was the application, which reportedly communicated one’s electric use and solar system production. Shortly after our system was installed and up and running, we found many errors in reports of such. We contacted SunPower and received no resolution and/or follow up regarding that problem. We ended up not even viewing the application on a regular basis because of that fact. We happened to open the application in December of 2019 and noticed an alert saying that our SunPower solar system was not responding since October 16, 2019. We placed multiple calls to Sun Power to help us restore our system often stating that they would look into the problem and they would get back to us.

After placing several calls to SunPower without receiving any follow up calls from SunPower and then receiving an outrageous $994.94 bill from Central Hudson Electric, they finally stated they would have someone come out to look at our system. Never did anyone from SunPower come or even call back to say they were not coming. We ended up getting New York State Solar Farm (the company who installed our system) to come out to restore our system.

When New York State Solar Farm finally came out to re-boot our system on January 23, 2020, they reported to us that the reason we received such an abundant Central Hudson Electric bill was that none of our solar production was being reported to Central Hudson since October 16, 2019. Never did we receive any communication from SunPower as to our solar system being in such a state for so many months. It was just by chance that we looked at the application to see that alert. And never were we ever told to look at the application on a regular basis to look out for such reports/alerts.

After receiving such a report, we again reached out to SunPower to report what had happened related to their lack of response and receive some resolution to the problem. At this point we requested to speak with a Customer Service Supervisor. After speaking with her over the telephone briefly, she stated that she would look into the matter and get back to us. She did somewhat attempt to get back to us, but only by calling when we were most likely not be available to answer (morning hours Monday-Friday) even when we previously stated days/times we would be available for calls and when emailing, would never respond with a resolution to this day (May 6, 2020).

After researching the various panels, though SunPower is more expensive than everybody else, they have good quality. Each of their panels has its own converter rather than having one converter that everything feeds into and that burns out every five years and you have to pay $2,000 to replace it. It would probably end up costing more than what we paid to begin with. With SunPower, if a converter goes out on a panel, they just replace that panel and it's covered for the life of the product. So it was worth the extra cost. It was a big investment, so we wanted to get everything we could out of it. Also, SunPower is a US company and all that good stuff.

The company that installed the system for us did a great job. They went into the attic and ran the conduits so the conduits are hidden rather than running them over the roof. So, appearance-wise, it's better. They were in and out and everything was clean when they left. After they were done, there was a problem with our electric service. It took a couple of days to figure out what the problem was and get it straightened out. It was an issue with polarity running to our pool equipment. So, they stuck with it over a couple of days ‘til they figured out where the problem was and got it fixed. They were responsive and followed through, and the installation went well. Our sales rep stayed in touch with us for over the following several months to make sure everything was going well and we were happy with the product and made sure that our utility company and the connection and all that stuff was good.

I like to invest my money in something that I feel like was obviously gonna be worthwhile. It doesn’t have to be an immediate return. It can be down the road. Going solar is something that I would like to do with the resources I have available to me. Also, my house is more of a eco-house, and so it seem like it fits in well into the design of the house, and for resell value, it's tied perfectly into that. A family friend that I interacted with told me about what Freedom Solar was about. So, I set up an appointment and it went from there.

Altogether, the process with SunPower was very easy. There was the initial meeting but as far as what I had to do, it's very minimal because pretty much everything was handled. I didn’t even have to be present, which was awesome because my work doesn’t allow me to be present very much. That worked out very well. The process was very clear as well. It wasn’t like I didn’t know what was going on. I'm coming up on a month and a half now producing my own power. I've enjoyed being able to just hop on the app because I have that downloaded to monitor it seeing, “Okay. Well, today it was really good as far as producing solar power,” and even being able to monitor how much power I'm using for my own house. So, it was really cool, and also interesting now that I'm noticing like, “Oh, it's really sunny today, so I'm gonna be doing good producing power.”

I unfortunately bought a house which came with a Sunpower lease. I didn't quite realize at the time how toxic solar leases are and you begin to wonder how they can they possibly be legally binding. To make my story short, I discovered the inverter was routinely faulting on cloudy days and outputting excessive DC voltage/current fault messages (according to the manual you are supposed to disconnect the unit immediately and call for service). Despite Sunpower having complete logs of the inverter, they never once contacted me about the faults. It was only by chance that I discovered these fire hazardous faults while in the garage.

I wish I could say Sunpower jumped at the opportunity to send someone out to make my home safe and professionally deliver their product. Nope! I had to struggle. Multiple calls. Multiple runarounds. Loads of BS. Eventually, I managed to assert myself and get them to send a contractor. Unfortunately, the contractor made the system completely inoperable. It now faults consistently and produces zero kWhr.

I pay $158/month for the lease. They are refusing to prorate me for the downtime even though are failing to provide service. So I am basically paying for no service until they decide to show up with a new inverter unit which apparently can take a month or longer to get (check the BBB complaints). 158/month for nothing! I'm not the only one either. Read the complaints.

I investigated legal options, but apparently, the contract signs away your rights to sue, instead forcing you to go through an arbitration company AAA which requires $200 to simply investigate the claim. So if Sunpower wants to steal a few hundred dollars from you you have to spend $200 just to potentially have Sunpower win the claim.

Please, please please avoid this company. With a 20 year lease you are almost guaranteed to end up my situation at some point. These inverter units aren't built to last for 20 years without issue and Sunpower is absolute hell to deal with. Out of the many representatives Ive spoken with, I've developed the impression that they are trained to deceive their clients. There is no shred of honesty or willingness to address your issue when you call. It's all turnarounds. Unfortunately, I feel like I am trapped. If anyone can tell me my recourse, I'd love to hear it. For now it will be spreading my story to every forum. If I can keep just one person from signing a lease with Sunpower I will have cost them more than they have costed me. These types of companies have no right to exist.

Going solar was the way for the future and it was a long-term investment. I own my system and New Jersey is very lucrative as far as the SRECs go. With SunPower, I didn’t feel like they pushed the sale for me and they made sure that I understood everything as opposed to just getting me to sign on the dotted line. The original offer they came with a 20-year loan and it wasn’t something I really wanted. I wanted a 10-year but I worked with them.

Once I signed the contract with SunPower, they took care of everything. I got a new roof with mine too. So, they hired the contractor to come out and tear down the roof and put me a new roof. After the roof, it was three weeks later and they came out and got the panels up. Then we had to wait for the electric department to give me the new net meter. Once that was done, the township came out to inspect it. From signing to operation, it took two months. It was pushed a little back ‘cause I got a roof. But I literally just signed it and I didn't have to do anything. They just told me what was going on and kept me up to date of what was gonna happen.

Going solar is one of the best decisions I made. I love it. I can just blast my AC in the summer as cold as I want and it doesn’t affect my bill. SunPower was spot-on with their estimate. My system produced more than what they thought I was gonna produce. The only time I had to pull from the grid was in January when the sun was not there. But I already had a credit from all the previous months where I overproduced. So, they took it right off of that. I’ve been just paying the $5 to be connected to the grid to the electric department, paying the price for the actual solar and I get my SRECs. It has been really simple.

I did a bunch of research and I found out that SunPower had some of the more efficient panels as opposed to the LG that I was supposed to get. That's what my company uses because we try to use the best equipment and the best materials out there. Also, I got a quote from another company and it was $30,000 more for the installation than SunPower. I work for Encon, the company that installed the panels. I didn't even think to get a price from them because typically, we're pretty expensive and we work on all high-end homes. I didn't think I would able to afford it. But for whatever reason, it was way cheaper than the other company.

The process was easy for me but it took a little long. The other company also said it would take about four to six months. The longest part was waiting for the permits and approval and all that then the power company. But it was pretty simple. The guys who were here took three days. They put 20 panels on, did all the inverters, and everything. As far as now, I love the SunPower app. It's the best. One of my co-workers went with another company and he has a different set of panels. His app isn't as good as SunPower's for seeing how much you've produced and how much you have stored on the grid. All in all, I'm happy.

When considering solar energy, make sure the company provides you different selection of the panels. In my case, I was just fortunate. I didn't know that SunPower had different colors. I got the flat, black ones and I couldn't be happier with them. I don't like the ones that are kinda bluish with the silver lines on them for residential. That's the only thing I would've really liked to know more about. Also, know about financing versus buying outright. I financed as I wasn't actually given the option to buy it out. I already had solar on a previous house. So, from that perspective, there was no sale necessarily involved. When we moved houses, we already had a spreadsheet put together, in terms of getting the numbers and compare. So, that way then I can do an apples to apples comparison versus, "Hey, company A is telling me this. Company B is telling me that, and it's $10,000 cheaper for that company. I'll go with that company B." I tried to be very even keeled without showing any favoritism towards one particular company. But in the end, SunPower really came through and showed the value proposition the best. I liked the overall perspective that I got both from the initial sales consultation and the knowledge level of the sales consultant.

We were a month delayed in getting the system turned on. But that was no fault of SunPower. That was 100% on PEC, the electrical cooperative that we have here because due to COVID-19, they were not doing any interconnection validations. That was the only delay we had on the project. Otherwise, it went through seamlessly and flawlessly. We're averaging about 150% generation vis-a-vis consumption right now on a daily basis.

Talk to people around you. There are a couple of reasons why detractors in solar are always going to be out there. One is that they don't necessarily understand the importance of going solar, that it's not just about a me, me, me type situation. And the fact that, "Well, it's only gonna be worthwhile if you're gonna be in the house for 10 to 15 years." "Well, okay. You put in a new kitchen. What do you mean?" That is what net cost out is like. You're not gonna get any money back except when it comes time to sell the house. Whereas with solar, yes, there is the net outlay of the construction, but you don't pay for electricity on the electricity you generate and when you're in surplus, you're selling it to the power company.

Number two, you also have those people that don't necessarily understand the value proposition. They just haven't had the right conversations for solar. One example, at my previous house, we have a solar installation done that was half the size of this one for the same price that this one was. So, in the three years between the two solar installations, there was a 50% cost reduction. So, to me, it's an outdated statement to say, "Well, you gotta be in the house for 10 years before you get reimbursed." But technology is going to be different in five years.

I was new in the market to figure what is good and what is not. I had more than two people coming to my house and explaining how solar works and how everything does. They were promising how this would work out this way about the energy company and what benefit they would be giving. The two important facts for me were the cost and the clear communication or the visibility into it. Because I, myself, is an engineer, I’m curious what are the inside components and how does it work. Solar Concepts' Rob, who was my sales guy, came to my house and that was how I got introduced to SunPower. I also went through my employer’s PerkSpot site and there also I found the rebate program which SunPower is driving. Rob explained everything that it wouldn't mean that it will go off the grid, what are the limitations, what are the ways to maximum utilization of the solar. I felt that this would be the company that I wanted to go with.

I got an email from the Solar Concepts that we won’t make that much energy throughout the year as we expected. SunPower sent me a check by doing some calculations and giving 17% of the cost back. But it didn’t serve the purpose. Now, I’m in the middle situation where I’ll be using some of my solar energy and some of my grid energy, so I’ll be having two bills now. And of course, there is no way that we can completely eliminate the grid bill or the energy company bill. I should at least utilize solar to the extent where I could use it during the daytime, and then on the nighttime, which is the off-peak hours, I’ll be using the grid energy. That is one thing I wanted to get insight.

I also wanted to see what are the parameters we consider and why this fluctuation came where we were expecting to generate 1,200-kilowatt energy for a year. But we don’t think we’ll make it to that. We’ll just generate maybe 800. I don’t know whether it was related to the panel material we choose or how does it work. But otherwise, SunPower’s been really good in terms of communicating what’s going on. Solar Concepts submitted my rebate form and I immediately got a response from SunPower that it would take eight weeks to process so that’s been good.

I googled about solar for the past two years and I got a quote from a couple of companies. I found that SunPower was a little expensive but I still wanted to have the warranty that they were offering. I went with them for two things. One, they were offering 25 years of service warranty and two, I like that SunPower is also the manufacturer of the panel versus the competitors. They have panels from LG, Samsung or Mitsubishi and modeling from something. SunPower, on the other hand, has panels, a modeling system, and everything to one company one warranty.

Their representative was very good. It's only been a month since I've had my services on and so far, so good. Based on this weather in New Jersey, I haven't seen many good days with the sun. I'm not seeing much of production because of clouds all throughout the day these past few weeks. I hope my system is working okay. Other than that, I like SunPower overall.

We’ve also been asked by several people in our neighborhood whether going solar was a good investment or not. It’s gotten a lot of interest from other people and for me, the determining factor is how high your electric bill is. If you’re only a husband and wife and you’re not using up that much energy, then it may not be in your best interest to get the panels. You’re not burning that much energy. But if you’re a family of six with kids that take showers that last forever or have electronics and use up a lot of power where you’re gonna have a high energy bill, then it becomes cost-effective to do it.

The installation went smoothly, but there were many issues like: inspection coordination, rebates, and most importantly the installation shut down the monitoring for a previously installed solar system. Sunpower refused to take responsibility for it until I pushed it. They finally figured out what is wrong, that they affected, but it is yet to be repaired. It is now 4 months since the installation. I was concerned the old system was deactivated. It took 4 months for them to confirm it was still on too. The customer service representatives in the office do not have good, and consistent customer service training.

Additionally my neighbor was supposed to get a referral bonus for recommending us and for our signing a contract and being paid in full. Now he was told that a rebate we received from Neovolta (the battery backup company) was the referral bonus he should have received. Can you begin to imagine how awkward this is with us and our neighbor? This needs to be addressed and settled with our neighbor. Our neighbors and my brother already asked us about SunPower and the first thing I said is, “Get your roof orientation.” But after that, it really just makes sense financially and environmentally and as long as you can get approval for everything. We had to do our roof and a tree has been taken down. So there were some additional things that we had to consider that I might flag for people but as far as just solar, as long as the roof faces south, do it.

Recently, I recommended SunPower to a friend, but it ended up being quite a lot more expensive. I think it was mainly because their solar system was smaller so it wasn't price-competitive at all.

Installing solar allows us to be reasonably unaffected from the unpredictable electrical market. This will also provide a secure future for our family.

The company we choose to install is Sun Power by Energy Concepts and we couldn't be happier. They kept us informed and answered any questions we had and were with us the whole way from beginning to end. It took about two weeks to get thee system up and running. We started producing sometime in mid-December. I'm satisfied with it. We used a company in Palm Springs called Renova Energy and they are the SunPower dealer there, but we also knew of them through friends. There were two companies we ultimately talked to in the end, but we chose Renova. The reputations of both were very good. The other company proposed the much bigger system and they were virtually insisting we install a battery. And right now, it’s a second home for us, so we didn't feel we needed that. By the time we make it our primary residence, which is the hope, that battery technology will change and will be even less costly.

Everything went off just as planned, which was interesting because it’s like we have to be able to have access to the house, and we scheduled the installation probably six weeks ahead of time because I had to get a flight to go out there. And I said, “Okay. Well, it has to start on this day and it has to finish by this day.” They did everything just as they said they would. They were an incredible company. Everything was turned on at that time and it is producing. We just weren’t getting credits for like the first week or two before Southern California Edison gave permission. It was operating, but you don’t get any credits back for the excess power produced until Southern California Edison does its thing. So, they got a little bit of free electricity from us, but that’s okay. It worked out fine. Everything worked fine with our SunPower system. The app worked fine. We’re very happy with everything.

I came across SunPower through a referral. They did my father’s home and he told me he had a good experience with SunPower. I was always considering solar energy but I never did any research. My father told me to reach out to this guy and I did. Enrolling was simple. It’s almost as if the salesperson just get people in and then SunPower would verify the information and send it off because I never spoke to them again. But it was a good process on SunPower.

Ad-Energy was good with the installation as well. They were thorough and efficient. They were in and out. They explained what they were gonna do and coordinated everything. Everything was done by text which is cool with me. I’m a millennial and it was easy. It was like a month, from the time I signed up until the panels were on the roof. The whole thing was a lot faster than I thought it would be. But we had to wait for the town to get the permit. It really wasn’t a big deal and I don’t mind the human element but it would be cool if SunPower had a progress thing on their website and I could look at something that says where you are, what you need to do, what we’re waiting on and what's next. On the other hand, it's been cool since I started producing solar energy. It’s often seen on the website.

However, I wish there was a way to understand how the SRECs work and whether I am automatically enrolled in it. I believe my father was automatically enrolled with it and I would like to know how that can be applied toward my loan balance. I understand there's SunPower and then there's Mosaic but I don’t know if their two systems can talk. Seeing these SRECs that I'm going to produce this summer and what I need to do, I wonder whether I need to enroll anything with the government in terms of where this money is gonna go. The only reason why I’m aware of this is we had solar with a different vendor at my office that my father set up. He didn't even know he can get SRECs until four years later. The government sent him a check. So he never claimed his SRECs. We had to go to a broker and they charged a 25% fee to take it out. But that's the only thing.

The 30% rebate ending made me start looking into it a little bit deeper. It made financial sense and then I liked what renewable energy does. The sign up process was pretty easy. It felt like I was closing on my house. All the DocuSign stuff made it pretty easy. They got me a better price on my system because I referred 21 people. They were able to work with me. I had a $7 electric bill last month which was fine because I actually start paying on my solar panel in March. So that was a good. It was a little buffer period. So far, I would have to be stuck with an average of $7 to $10 a month of electricity use.

I have 30 panels and I have them all on one side of my roof. After 4 o’clock, the sun will make it sway to the other side of my roof, so even though the sun is out and it is not hitting directly the panels, but I understand they’re still producing a little bit. I was just curious if I would produce more if I had even like a third of the array on the other side of my roof. Because from 4 o’clock and all the way through 8 or 9 o’clock in the summer, there’s still a heavy amount of sun there, whereas I would not be producing as much everything being on one side. So I would like to try to get a follow-up analysis. It makes sense because some of my neighbors have it on the other side of their roof and we’re on the same block. So I don’t know if my system is maximized.

I was looking into solar panels, probably through the internet, and hooked up with several people. I also had two companies come out to my house. I looked into multiple companies because solar is just like a wild west show at this point because people are going bankrupt right and left. SunPower has been around for something like 30 or 40 years, and has name recognition.

Enrolling with SunPower was literally perfect. I couldn't have asked for anything better. It's also performing exactly as they said. All the numbers came and crunched out perfectly as far as loans and how much it cost. Most people finance their panels because they're so expensive. That’s basically taking out a loan, zoning, the city's gotta be satisfied, and then installation. It's a construction project at the end of the day and for the whole process to take about 45 to 60 days, that’s pretty good. We’ve been producing our own energy for two and a half months. 59% of my energy comes from the solar panels at this point in the middle of winter. That's pretty impressive. Overall, SunPower does an excellent job.

I had been considering solar, but I had been told by previous companies I had contacted that Tucson Electric would not allow anybody else to join the grid. I had to put it off for a couple of years and then, I got something in the mail and thought to try SunPower. I called and they said, "Tucson Electric lets you go on the grid now.” They came to the house and after about 45 minutes of talking about it, I decided to do it. I didn’t feel any pressure. We just had a nice, comfortable conversation.

The installation took about four days total, but they weren’t full days. The installers had to come out and do something, and then, they had to come out and do something else. Also, I would recommend that you do your roof before you put your solar panels on or you're going to pay for it to be taken off and put back on again. They turned it on in September or October. SunPower has reduced my Tucson Electric bill. In the summertime, it was $300, but now, it's about 150. And although I’m also paying the lease on the solar panel, it still works out to be a much better deal than not having them.

It's been now three months since I reported the issue to SunPower, and after 60 days and weekly calls to follow up, nothing has happened. The local dealer I bought this system from went out of business, read other reviews. It seems like everyone dealing with this company goes out of business. Their customer service is terrible; they never follow up; their partner technicians are irresponsible and don't care about their work orders; hence things don't get fixed. There are far better companies offering quality solar systems to save yourself the hassle and look somewhere else; if I could, I would get rid of my SunPower system today.

SunPower has been around longer than most companies and that is why we picked them. We also checked with a couple of neighbors where we live and they were highly satisfied. The enrollment process was a little lengthy because of all the permits from Edison, the city and the HOA. It took a little longer than expected to get it started but that’s the only drawback that I found. At this point, we haven’t received the first bill from Edison to see what they’re gonna charge us. But I already got the first bill from Renova, which was what they quoted us to be.

We've been producing energy since December of 2018 and we're impressed. We brag to our friends about how we're getting along with the power, reducing our carbon footprint along the way and all the time paying less than we would have paid with the local utility particularly after all the fires that have taken place and rates have continued to rise. Going solar was a good decision. I had been doing my research a couple of years ago and the trigger was that a number of outfits were showing up at the front door trying to sell me solar. Then I came across an ad for SunPower and I followed up on it. I ended up having a meeting with the guy over there and I was persuaded by the technology. Plus their approach to installation was really impressive.

The enrollment was handled by Justin and it was very easy. My wife and I showed up at the offices and provided the basic information around income and the level of power we wanted to generate, and he took it from there. They generated the online contract and sent it to us through email. Then we used DocuSign to sign the documents. That was the extent of it all and yet it took about a month after we have signed the papers to get the installation started. But they did all of these things like the application with PG&E and the permit with El Dorado County. So that was all part of their action items after the contract was signed. On the other hand, it was seamless for us. Justin was very professional. I appreciated his efficiency in getting the whole process going. He's also been responsive when I needed some questions answered.
