How does Auto-Owners Insurance work?

Auto-Owners Insurance uses a traditional model: Iindependent local agents sell policies and provide customer service. You can pay bills online, but agents handle all other services — so if you need to file a claim, your agent should be familiar with the specifics of your policy. This system also ensures you maintain one point of contact rather than dealing with a different customer service agent each time you call.

Over the last 15 or more years, I have watched this company go from one of the best insurance companies to, in my opinion, the worst. The premium rates that I get from other insurance companies are about half of what Auto-Owners is trying to charge. Customer service is the absolute worst. They don't follow up on claims or anything else. It's almost impossible to get anyone to respond to a phone call, text or email. I am currently in the process of dropping all 5 of the insurance policies that I have with them.

I am extremely disappointed with the way this claim has been handled by the claim specialist, Jen **. She was rude, unwilling to listen, and very difficult to communicate with throughout the process. Experiences like this can truly damage a company’s reputation. A claims department should be staffed with professionals who know how to treat clients with respect, empathy, and professionalism — especially during stressful situations involving claims. It is frustrating to pay monthly premiums expecting support when needed, only to feel dismissed when it is time for the company to step up. Based on my experience, I hope the company seriously evaluates the quality of customer service they are providing and the people representing them. I would strongly encourage others to do their research carefully before working with this company.

I believed I was covered when my roof started leaking into my bedroom. I filed a claim, and the adjuster came out to inspect the property for any wind and hail damage. He got on the roof and walked around, but told me he saw no issues, except for some hail damage that likely occurred before I had coverage. He also mentioned that he didn’t see any hail damage on my driveway lights, as hail typically removes the paint from surfaces it hits. I expressed my frustration, questioning why anyone would carry insurance and pay high premiums if they could never file a successful claim. He responded by asking if my house was paid off and suggested I be like his brother-in-law and not carry insurance at all. I felt as though he was definitely hired by the company to find reasons to deny claims. My advice to others is to stay away from this company.

We have been insured with this company since the existence of our organization. We had damage due to weather which we had no control over. At no point were we advised that only portions were covered which is not good for anyone. How can a company that has insured your organization for 30 years NOT tell you or advise you on what needs to be insured. This has caused the organization a financial hardship.

Company will hit you with fraudulent charges after you have already canceled the service. Turn you into collections for the fraudulent charge. You didn’t pay after your insurance agent already told them it was canceled before that bill was issued.

Josh at Auto Owners in MN went to bat for me and was able to help get my claim resolved when I had the unfortunate occurrence of a bad hail storm, combined with contractor availability/reliability issues caused my claim to expire before I could get the work done to repair all the siding. I was unable to afford the repair myself, and it was going to cause more damage to my house by not completing the repair another year. I didn't know what to do, to be honest I was in a desperate situation. He was compassionate and actually cares, I've been with auto-owners a long time and only have good things to say about them. When I needed them most, they were there. Ive dealt with a lot of insurance companies over the years and most would not have even considered this. Thanks Josh, God bless you brother!

My 90 year old Mother is the customer. She was parked in a handicap spot at the local grocery store. She had pulled through so that her vehicle was facing out to the aisle for easy exit. Her vehicle was hit in the front corner while she was in the store. My sister was with her at the time and was witness to the new damage. Mom mo filed a claim and it was denied. The investigator determined that my mom and sister were both lying and she caused the accident. My mom does not lie or cause an accident. Terrible company. Avoid them at all costs

Auto owners has been great they take my money monthly with no issue, I purchased extra coverage to ensure I will be covered if I have an issue BUT what do you know I have an issue and my adjuster say not covered and was not very nice. WELL my Extra coverage say it is! Spoke to the adjuster who said I don't see that policy will you e-mail it to me? WHAT? Agent is unable to even talk about what my policy interpretation is totally clueless. I have been transferred, left messages, filed complaints and no one has gotten back to me! Wonderful until you need them to protect your largest investment! I guess 5 O'clock News will be my next stop!

I paid for roadside assistance with my auto policy. I used it for the first time yesterday. I had a flat on my travel trailer that I wanted help with, I'm 68 and my wife is 71 and we are traveling in Texas. After calling and requesting service the AI started texting us every half hour and assuring us they were doing everything in their power to give us the assistance we paid for. This went on for around 12 hours so we called again and waited until they gave us a person to talk to. They profusely apologize for the delay and told us they would continue to try and find a provider in our area. Then we were back to an AI text every half hour.

We called again and wanted to talk to a supervisor and they told us they would call shortly, they call just before we went to bed for the night and apologized profusely again. We finish with that and we get a text that says if we don't answer in 15 Min We would be removed from the needing assistance list. We answered that one but at 4:53 AM they texted again and of course we were sleeping and they removed us from the waitlist.

So I ended up doing it myself which I was trying to avoid since I paid for a service from my insurance policy. Yup it's done but when I get home I'm calling my agent and have him get me new insurance from a different company. If Auto Owners can't handle a simple task like covering and flat tire which their customer paid them for then I think I will have the same kind of issue with any larger claim. They have shown me they are untrustworthy and have scammed me for the last time.

Auto-Owners is great until you make a claim. They come in with low rates with supposedly great coverage and they love when you pay your bill. But if you make a claim they are very dismissive and don't even send their own adjusters to look at damage. I had to appeal original decision which took a lot of work to get to that point then they sent out another 3rd party to do their work. I could not be more disappointed in a company that I paid a lot of money to only to discover they would not hold up their end of the bargain. Just to add to the info I have been with them for 7 years and this was my first claim and it will be my last interaction with them as I begin looking for a new company.
