How does Auto-Owners Insurance work?

This company would rather higher an attorney than settle with their customers for an amount less than $1000 dollars. That is an intelligent business decision lol !! That is probably one of the reasons their premiums are so high.

Mr. ** the adjuster then also called the next morning and stated the same thing. We then called the supervisor and emailed 3 times and his response was that we misunderstood and now they are sending an engineer out to deny it. We only asked that they put their findings in writing so we could get a warranty claim. A very dishonest and unethical Bunch of people. All we needed was for their expert to put finding in writing. I can not explain the distress my home owner is feeling and I can not blame him. Who else has been duped by Auto Owners for a storm claim?

The insurance adjuster was extremely rude to me and put my claim in investigative review right away. They sued me stating I lied about my injury. I had all of the documentation and I followed my doctor’s instructions. Last week was trial and Auto Owners lost their case against me. The doctors they had review me were so biased and untrustworthy in their testimony. Their lies were found out, but I will never give Auto Owners a dime again. Run as fast as you can away from them.

Over the last 15 or more years, I have watched this company go from one of the best insurance companies to, in my opinion, the worst. The premium rates that I get from other insurance companies are about half of what Auto-Owners is trying to charge. Customer service is the absolute worst. They don't follow up on claims or anything else. It's almost impossible to get anyone to respond to a phone call, text or email. I am currently in the process of dropping all 5 of the insurance policies that I have with them.

I am extremely disappointed with the way this claim has been handled by the claim specialist, Jen **. She was rude, unwilling to listen, and very difficult to communicate with throughout the process. Experiences like this can truly damage a company’s reputation. A claims department should be staffed with professionals who know how to treat clients with respect, empathy, and professionalism — especially during stressful situations involving claims. It is frustrating to pay monthly premiums expecting support when needed, only to feel dismissed when it is time for the company to step up. Based on my experience, I hope the company seriously evaluates the quality of customer service they are providing and the people representing them. I would strongly encourage others to do their research carefully before working with this company.

I believed I was covered when my roof started leaking into my bedroom. I filed a claim, and the adjuster came out to inspect the property for any wind and hail damage. He got on the roof and walked around, but told me he saw no issues, except for some hail damage that likely occurred before I had coverage. He also mentioned that he didn’t see any hail damage on my driveway lights, as hail typically removes the paint from surfaces it hits. I expressed my frustration, questioning why anyone would carry insurance and pay high premiums if they could never file a successful claim. He responded by asking if my house was paid off and suggested I be like his brother-in-law and not carry insurance at all. I felt as though he was definitely hired by the company to find reasons to deny claims. My advice to others is to stay away from this company.

How can a company that has insured your organization for 30 years NOT tell you or advise you on what needs to be insured. This has caused the organization a financial hardship.

I paid for roadside assistance with my auto policy. I used it for the first time yesterday. I had a flat on my travel trailer that I wanted help with, I'm 68 and my wife is 71 and we are traveling in Texas. After calling and requesting service the AI started texting us every half hour and assuring us they were doing everything in their power to give us the assistance we paid for. This went on for around 12 hours so we called again and waited until they gave us a person to talk to. They profusely apologize for the delay and told us they would continue to try and find a provider in our area. Then we were back to an AI text every half hour.

We called again and wanted to talk to a supervisor and they told us they would call shortly, they call just before we went to bed for the night and apologized profusely again. We finish with that and we get a text that says if we don't answer in 15 Min We would be removed from the needing assistance list. We answered that one but at 4:53 AM they texted again and of course we were sleeping and they removed us from the waitlist.

So I ended up doing it myself which I was trying to avoid since I paid for a service from my insurance policy. Yup it's done but when I get home I'm calling my agent and have him get me new insurance from a different company. If Auto Owners can't handle a simple task like covering and flat tire which their customer paid them for then I think I will have the same kind of issue with any larger claim. They have shown me they are untrustworthy and have scammed me for the last time.

Auto-Owners is great until you make a claim. They come in with low rates with supposedly great coverage and they love when you pay your bill. But if you make a claim they are very dismissive and don't even send their own adjusters to look at damage. I had to appeal original decision which took a lot of work to get to that point then they sent out another 3rd party to do their work. I could not be more disappointed in a company that I paid a lot of money to only to discover they would not hold up their end of the bargain. Just to add to the info I have been with them for 7 years and this was my first claim and it will be my last interaction with them as I begin looking for a new company.

On March 26, 2024 my perfect condition 2016 Corvette got hit in a parking lot while it was legally parked in a designated parking spot by an 85 year old woman that is danger to society. While driving she hit my car in its parking spot, doing significant damage and moving it over a foot away. She drove away, fleeing the scene but a bystander saw the whole incident and left me a note with her license plate.

I called my Auto-Owners insurance and was assigned a claim adjuster by the name of Gina Marcantonio. She was very unhelpful from day one. When I gave Gina the license plate on the note to aid in finding the woman who hit my car, she said that the note on my car was not a serious thing and did not want to go through the effort of looking for the person who hit my car. It took me more than a month to find the identity of the person who had hit my car on my own, along with her address and insurance.

All this work was Gina’s responsibility as a claim adjuster. Later on she also started to give wrong information to the hit-and-run woman’s insurance claim adjuster, saying I was fully paid and my car was fixed and the damage only amounted to $2500, before my car even went to the shop for repairs This caused the other person’s insurance company to not make payments. Without my hard work, Auto-Owners would have not recuperated money for damages that I was partially paid for from the claim. I found the video of the hit and run and the person’s license plate and obtained the police report and the body cam footage of the detective visiting the hit and run person’s home and completed the investigation.

All the damages, the primary and the secondary, was given to Gina and she called me and verified that she had the complete information on what was going on, all the damages were verified to have been caused by the accident per the shop that fixed my car in their invoices. I paid completely out of my pocket for the repairs ( The total was $7159.45 and not what you are referring to as over $8000). Gina kept saying that I would not be paid for the complete repair, even though the shop manager spoke to her many times, even calling her in front of me to set her straight. He told her that I was a customer and explained to Gina that I do not own their shop and all of the damages to my car were indeed from the recent accident and I paid them out of my pocket in full, and they would be a witness.

The leadership team of Auto-Owner insurance company, Jeffrey Tagsold, who serves as the CEO/President, Jim Walsh who serves as the Vice President Claims, Baker Mike who serves as the Regional Vice President, and Jamie Whisnant who serves as the Regional Vice President, clearly don’t know how poorly their clients are being treated, and I would like to to see their faces when they are informed of this injustice. Instead of thanking me for my years as a client and providing me with the services I pay for, I am being ripped off and punished by my own insurance company.

My home burned to the ground in August of 2023. I had been with Auto-owners for my home insurance needs for about five years at the time of the fire. My autos had been with them longer. Lightning struck my home while we were away for the day. I could never put into words the devastation of getting a call that your home is ashes. Then arriving and realizing the only thing you own is the vehicle you are in and the clothes on your back, after years of hard work to provide a life for your family. Brad called the next morning and told me he was going to take care of my family. He stated that he wanted to wire me some money from my policy to help me get a place to sleep and essentials and would see me the following day. He arrived the next day, I cannot say enough about how empathetic, courteous, caring, easy to work with and prompt he was. I dealt exclusively with the large loss team and the whole team treated me with the utmost respect and care.

Brad explained to me that I had nothing to worry about and that everything would be taken care of. I never felt rushed, threatened or uneasy, but they of course gave the timeline that everything needed to be completed which I appreciated. They explained everything to me and I never felt like they were trying to get one over on me or shaft me. From all the horror stories I have ever heard about insurance companies, I cannot say one bad thing about the guys that helped me out. They went above and beyond. They had my family in a rental home within a couple of days, that was fortunately furnished, and said if I found that I needed different beds or anything they would accommodate to the best of their ability. The grief process is indescribable, but they seemed to understand that the last thing I needed was to be pressured or rushed into anything.

I always felt like I was driving during the rebuild process. They truly felt like friends that were just helping in the process. Brad ** and John ** were exceptional to work with and earned a customer for life for auto owners. The entire large loss team helped in dealing with my mortgage company and getting the build done as quickly as possible. I cannot thank auto owners enough for putting my life back together for me. Updated on 10/30/2025: This is crap insurance!!! They may start off with lower premiums but they end up increasing it at renewal time. My car insurance increased by 40% at renewal time so I ended up switching to another company. I still have my homeowner’s insurance through Auto-Owners. In the 3 yrs. that I have been a customer, I filed 1 claim for hail damage to my roof. The claims adjuster returned my telephone calls 10% of the time. I was passed around to different adjusters. My claim was ultimately denied. Customer service constantly told me my claim was closed and that there was nothing else to do on the claim which I later learned was incorrect. That prompted me to file an appeal.

My 10+ neighbors had their claim approved for hail damage to their roofs in a very timely manner. Several weather reports, specifically to my address, noted 1.25 inch hail. Yet, Auto-Owners continues to deny my claim. I am the ONLY one in my community that is still fighting with my insurance company. If you want to talk to the CEO or Regional Director, forget it! I sent a letter to the CEO and Regional Director regarding my complaint and received telephone calls from other people in the company. It is 10 months now and I am still dealing with Auto-Owners. I absolutely, positively would NOT recommend Auto-Owners!!

I barely heard from the guy pre-inspection, but that’s fine. Mark went out and assessed the damage. Without any communication (explanations of what he saw, extent of damage, claim options, claim process, or WHETHER I WANTED TO PROCEED WITH FILING A CLAIM), Mark processed my claim and sent me a couple of emails with insurance charts and language, specifically to my claim, which I could not understand. Basically, dude just processed my claim and mailed a check. I then called and asked him to walk me through my claim, particularly, what Auto Owner’s will cover vs. what I will be responsible for. I had to truly redirect this guy to answer specific questions as opposed to being rushed through the conversation.

After he got through the numbers, I realized I’d be paying too much out of pocket and decided to cancel the claim. Mark then asked me to follow up with an email, which I did, to which I received no response. I followed up again, in which he told me he canceled the check days ago. Mark’s entire customer service was rushed, failed to provide any information on process, claim amount, and what they/I would be responsible for, time, or any sort of effort. Finally, I asked Mark for a customer service email address (so that I could submit a private complaint), but I never heard from the guy again. Hence, my public complaint. I hope this isn’t reflective of the entire company. I should’ve remained with Travelers, otherwise, it appears I’m getting what I’m paying for.

The second check regarding depreciation payment is taking over a month to get and is much much less that was expected going by the initial amount of depreciation amount stated. This is all very disappointing considering the yearly premium increases. Due to these outrageous increases we had to go from a $500. deductible with a much higher deductible to save money.

Nobody wakes up and says, “I want to get into a car accident and sue an insurance company.” People with integrity don’t think like that. We just want to work, pay our bills, and live free. We want to stay independent — not depend on anyone. But one moment, one hit, one irresponsible driver… and everything changes. I was sitting in my truck at a full stop when I was suddenly hit by three vehicles at once. It was the hardest impact of my life. I wasn’t moving. I wasn’t at fault. And yet, I’m the one paying the price. I’ve undergone:

         •   MRI scans
         •   Specialist evaluations
         •   Chiropractic sessions
         •   Multiple physical therapy programs
         •   Steroid injections

         •   Trigger point shots

None of it gave lasting relief. The pain keeps returning. Today, I live with a 3% permanent disability rating, but the numbers don’t tell the story. I live in constant, daily pain — especially in my left arm. Searing pain shoots down into my fingers, and now it’s creeping into my spine and my right side. Tingling, numbness, and burning sensations in both hands have become my new normal. I can’t walk upstairs without wincing. Standing too long feels like punishment.

And still — Auto-Owners Insurance has NEVER called me. Not once. They have spoken to every other driver involved in the accident — but not the man who got hit. We submitted a formal 30-day demand. That was over 65 days ago. We gave them every medical document, every test result, every financial breakdown — and they chose silence. Meanwhile:

         •   I lost my work truck.
         •   I’m facing home foreclosure.
         •   I had to take out a loan with crushing interest just to survive.
         •   My business is collapsing, and I can’t physically work.

         •   My life is unraveling, while the insurance company does… nothing.

People think it’s just about a car. But this isn’t about dents and bumpers. It’s about nerve damage, spinal trauma, and permanent limitations that affect your ability to live. You don’t see it on an X-ray — but I feel it every second of the day. What is insurance for, if not to protect those who are truly hurt? This company wants people like me to go away quietly. But I won’t. This is no longer just about me — it’s about how many others they’ve done this to. I’m not asking for pity. I’m demanding accountability.

I feel compelled to share my experience with Auto-Owners Insurance, particularly in regard to how they handled my recent claim after my vehicle was destroyed in a fire caused by a manufacturer’s defect. Throughout the claims process, I faced an alarming lack of communication. Despite repeated efforts, I could not get the claims adjuster at the Kennesaw, GA claim center to return calls or emails. When I escalated the issue to their supervisors, the response was equally apathetic. This lack of accountability seems indicative of a troubling corporate culture.

Auto-Owners presented an unreasonably low appraisal value for my vehicle and outright refused to allow me to hire a certified independent appraiser to assess the loss. The company relies on CCC One Market Valuation for appraisals. Interestingly, just six months earlier, I had another total loss on the same vehicle—handled by a different insurance company—where CCC One appraised the value $4,000 higher than Auto-Owners’ figure. This inconsistency raises serious red flags.

Even more concerning is Auto-Owners’ refusal to include a standard appraisal clause, which would give policyholders the right to seek an independent valuation in the case of disputes. As it stands, their stance is rigid: accept the low offer or walk away. No negotiations. No third-party evaluations. No dispute resolution. Their price is final—regardless of fairness. Auto-Owners is the only insurance company in the nation that denies consumers the ability to hire an independent appraiser. This practice strikes at the heart of consumer rights and fair dealing. No insurer should be allowed to operate in this manner. They should be barred from writing policies in Georgia.

I am currently working with the Insurance Commissioner’s office to address these serious issues and advocate for the inclusion of consumer safeguards and fair resolution policies in Auto-Owners’ practices or to stop allowing these predatory policies to be written in Georgia. Until real changes are made, I strongly urge anyone considering Auto-Owners Insurance to explore alternatives that prioritize transparency, fairness, and consumer protection.

My experience with Auto-Owners Insurance was horrible! Had Auto-Owners not screwed me over on my claim, I would have not known how bad they were gouging me. Yes, I found an auto/home bundled package that saves me nearly $2k a year. After multiple attempts to follow up with a filed claim with Auto-Owners, my broker advised Auto-Owners closed my claim without notification.

After finding better insurance, I reached out and left a message to cancel with Auto-Owners, but Auto-Owners failed to return my call so I continued calling until a warm body took my call. In addition, Auto-Owners did not provide me any renewal notification until I insisted they send and automatically renewed coverage without consent. As a result, Auto-Owners sends me a final bill for $30.93 indicative as to how hard up they are as a company. I'd definitely recommend being proactive in shopping against Auto-Owners. If you file a claim with Auto-Owners, good luck!

Useless insurance company galore coupled with very poor customer service, slow, non-transparent, and risk I say, as a consequence, ill intended. I have had a policy with the covering my condo for 15 years. The first time I have a special assessment, they do not cover a dime even though the cause it not excluded from the policy they gave me. The reason they gave is their own internal policy they keep under the desk. Shady insurance company. Run away while you can.

The worst experience I have ever had with dealing with insurance. I was in the process of remodeling my house when the project was halted due to unforeseen circumstances. As a result, I had moved out during the remodeling, which took longer than expected, and a water line ruptured, flooding the kitchen and the finished basement. My claim was denied because the house was not my primary residence, as no one was living there during the remodel process, and the claim's adjuster was argumentative and rude. I believe one of the reasons the claim was denied is that I would not use his contactor for the repairs.

I filed my first claim 2 weeks ago. I have full coverage with Auto Owners. I have been strung along for 2 weeks by the adjuster so decided to DO THEIR JOB and call the 'at-fault' insurance company myself. Guess what- Auto Owners lied and had not filed my claim with them yet. 17 days of telling me we are waiting on USAA to get back- all the while they hadn't even filed it yet. This has got to be illegal.

If you would like rude, inconvenient, and do it on their own schedule kind of Insurance Company…. Well this is the one for you! Don’t expect for them to have anything done on a timely manner and you’ll have to constantly call and remind them to just do their job. Most importantly don’t expect them to take your business serious, you are just a paycheck! If I could give it 0 stars I would. Hands down worst company I’ve ever worked with.
