Read the cancellation policy carefully. I do not know how I missed the information online. Cancelling a prepaid rental more than 24 hours in advance results in a $50 cancellation fee. I don't know if other rental companies charge the same cancellation fee. Instead check out paying at the counter!!!! According to the Hertz customer service rep there is no fee for cancelling. Then again, I would read the cancellation policy.

I'm writing to share a consumer protection story that I feel obligated to share. I was recently charged $896.20 by Hertz for emergency roadside assistance — a tow that I declined and never received. After losing the key to my rental car, I contacted Hertz roadside assistance. They informed me they were unable to dispatch a tow to help me. I ultimately declined the service and made other arrangements, paying for a tow myself the next morning.

Despite receiving no assistance, Hertz billed me nearly $900. When I contacted them, I was initially told the charge would be refunded. Then they reversed their decision, saying they had paid a vendor — even though no tow ever occurred. I’ve filed a credit card fraud dispute, formal complaints with the Tennessee Attorney General, Better Business Bureau, and posted publicly on Trustpilot and other consumer sites — and I’ve heard from others who have experienced similar issues with Hertz billing for undelivered services. I’d be happy to speak further, share documentation, and provide a timeline of events. This isn’t just about a single billing error — it’s about holding large corporations accountable for predatory billing practices that harm everyday consumers.

Hertz's customer service is, in my experience, a void where inquiries disappear and customer dissatisfaction thrives. My rental, which began with a semblance of efficiency at DCA, quickly spiraled into a frustrating ordeal reminiscent of a Kafka novel. When extending my rental because my travel plans changed, I was repeatedly transferred between online agents and the DCA location, each providing inconsistent quotes and conflicting instructions. The local office, it seems, exists solely as a theoretical entity, as my voicemails were met with the same resounding silence as my emails.

When I finally managed to connect with someone via the 800 number, the rental price mysteriously increased, adding insult to injury after the extensive runaround I had already endured. Hertz's failure to honor their initial quote demonstrates not only poor business practices but also a blatant disregard for the value of the customer's time and money. This isn't customer service; it's customer mistreatment. Hertz has perfected the art of transforming a simple rental adjustment into a bureaucratic nightmare. I strongly advise against using Hertz, unless you have a penchant for being ignored, misled, and overcharged.

Reserved a Mustang convertible two months before our trip. Called Hertz several times before trip to ensure that the Mustang was available, they said, "Don't worry." When we arrived at the Houston Hobby Hertz, employees at the counter said they never had a Mustang at their location. Employees said I should check Bush Airport for one, absolutely no help from them. After an hour with no help, we had to be in Galveston later that afternoon so we took what was there and they still charged us for the Mustang. We never ever will trust Hertz again. For the treatment we received from employees at Hertz Hobby Airport. Beware of Hertz.

I did the prepaid option when renting online. It states all fees are included. When I turned in my rental, they charged me $42 for fuel, even though I brought it back with a full tank. After questioning the charge to customer service, they refunded the charge. However if I had not done my due diligence, I would have been overcharged. Also, I requested a small truck for the rental. My flight was delayed by 4 hours, it was close to midnight when I got to Hertz. Instead of telling me that I would be getting a totally different vehicle, I walked out to the lot DFW airport, and the vehicle was a huge truck. I'm 5'1" tall and was driving in an unfamiliar big city with this huge truck. I was too tired to go back in and ask why?? Would not rent from Hertz again.

I have to rent my cars from Hertz thru Uber off and on over the last 10 years. They are consistently unreliable cars that I'm always having to take into service for various reasons. I have to go to the facility, then call Hertz/Uber to get a voucher, fill it out, submit it to Hertz, and they wait for hours at the repair shop to get the approval. Then I give the approval to the repair shop. Then they contact Hertz for verification, which can then take days! I can't sleep in the repair shop, and Hertz keeps me from working while the car is in the shop! They continue to charge me for the full rental week despite the fact that the car is in the shop for days on end.

The extra fees were the same as the rental charge that I signed up for. Because I had not noticed this (frequent customer) I rented again in late March. This time they added on 5 extra charges, doubling my charges. When I called they said that the pickup and drop off site gets to add on any charges they want. BTW the taxes were 11% and 20%. No one was there and no procedures to leave a car anywhere online or at the location. So I called "customer service" again and was told that the only location that could accept the return would be an airport in the next city! Absolutely not.... So instead I am now being charged another day because of Hertz incompetent "customer service" agents who gave me wrong information, made me parade around town like an idiot, and then ultimately extending my reservation for more money .. This is shady and downright terrible customer service. P.S. this was a TWELVE HUNDRED DOLLAR rental.... This International company failed miserably in regard to our recent car rental. We visited our local location in mid January in anticipation of our upcoming trip to Florida in March. First, the lady behind the counter barely acknowledged our presence upon entering. She provided inadequate information as to what steps we needed to follow to secure a rental vehicle. She stated we were too early to setup the rental but did take our information and even provided an estimated cost. We believed things were set and we would hear something closer to the time of our rental date confirming the price and pick up information. About a week before our scheduled trip, we had not yet heard anything from Hertz.

We tried to contact Hertz twice, during regular business hours, at two different numbers and no one answered. Because Hertz was the rental agency used by AAA to get our discount, we decided to visit them for guidance on confirmation. AAA was helpful and provided us with a written contract and confirmation from Hertz. We also then received an email providing a detailed confirmation from Hertz. On the day we were to pick up the car from Hertz, we received a call from Hertz, stating “We don’t have a car for you “. This was 2 hours before our designated pick up time.

No apologies or explanations were given to us as to why the contract we had was seemingly useless. She actually seemed more concerned with the loss of money for her business than she was with the fact that we were left in the lurch and our entire trip was in jeopardy. Luckily, Enterprise was able to come through for us and our vacation was saved. We will NEVER use or recommend this business to anyone. Avoid this business! The agent said that would be fine, but the charge would actually be for one whole day of the day amount. Imagine my surprise when the original rental fee went from $900 to a grand total of $1890. I immediately contacted them and was advised that was the correct total. That adding one day was more than double the seven day amount. I tried both phone contact and email and even disputed the charges with my credit card company. Through Hertz, I could not get anyone to understand they were wrong.

The credit card company tried saying they contacted Hertz and the charges were correct. I had the credit card company dispute the charges again and was informed that they were correct. I sent a few more emails to Hertz until I got an email back from someone who understood I was being scammed by Hertz and refunded the extra charges. If you are reading this, listen closely. My sister rented a car through Hertz and were given an electric car. We have never driven an EV and asked for guidance. They basically said plug it in and it will charge in 30 minutes. We figured out on our own you have to download an app and find a charging station. Finding a charging station is not easy. You can’t use a Tesla or Rivian station we found out. Also there apparently 3 different levels of charging stations which we didn’t know. When we plugged it in it said it would be charged at 2:30 am and we plugged in at 11 am. We had driven to Sonoma to hike and our day was ruined because we could not drive the car because the battery was too low and there were no level 3 stations within 45 minutes We tried calling the hertz office and could not get through despite going through the voice mail prompt hell of pushing multiple numbers. We finally got through and were immediately put on hold then they lost the call!

I know we tried calling 10 times. There was no user manual in the vehicle. We were able to get it charged enough after leaving it at a charge station all day to barely get back to phoenix. It was supposed to be returned fully charged but after we found a charge station and plugging it in all morning it was only 38% charged. When we returned it to hertz the manager was totally unsympathetic and pretty much said “well what do you want me to do.” She was charged $47 because it was not fully charged. Horrible customer experience with hertz!! Don’t ever buy or rent a EV!!!

WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE EVER! This company does NOT care about their customer's safety at ALL! We rented a car out of Grand Junction CO airport location. A Ford sport utility. For a cross country trip, one way, to SC. Halfway across there was a loud banging under car. So we pulled off highway onto side of road. The heavy cloth/rubber skid plate cover had lost its clips and was hanging down! I am willing to bet mechanics left out a bunch of the clips after an oil change, being in a hurry or just lazy! We had to find something in our FULLY packed car to try to get us to a safer place. We used a string of twinkle lights/wire to wire it on as best we could. We called Hertz and the guy said we could "get another car but would need to backtrack EIGHTY MILES on our route to the Hertz that could help us! We were just outside Tupelo , so why don't they have something there??

PLUS our car was packed like a Jenga game and we would've had to spent hours repacking/unpacking all our stuff. And they stated they wouldn't be able to supply a same size or bigger car....so it wouldn't have fit anyways! We had to stop 2 more times on highway to reattach as best we could! We found a store and purchased wire ties and fixed it at hotel. Customer service could NOT have cared less that my daughter and I could've been hit and killed while on the side of the highway trying to fix THEIR car and make it suitable to drive without the piece banging for hundreds more miles! Also keeping it from tearing off, causing a wreck behind us or for us to lose control and wreck! The uncaring attitudes both during and after this issue were just DISGUSTING!! We paid over $1,000 for a car that failed us halfway across the country and could have caused us to be hit and killed SEVERAL times on the side of the highway!!!

You would think they'd be VERY upset about this happening to us after paying so much for a car! I guess Hertz is just in the habit of renting out cars that have NOT been properly maintained and if you have an issue...will leave you high and dry on the side of the road....or tell you to bring it back almost 100 miles to switch it for a smaller car that can't fit all your cargo. We will NEVER EVER rent from Hertz again and we do a good number of rentals a year. Hertz has ruined their reputation and we will NOT recommend them and will make our experience, and their poor response to it WELL known!! They deserve NEGATIVE 5 STARS!!

When returning the rental, the employees had left early and said no one could give my husband a ride, then they left our invoice open for a week after renting it to someone else. 2 months later we get a $142 bill from platepass and Hertz told us we should’ve known what our options were, even though we didn’t set up the rental or speak to anyone when returned. Hertz customer service is one of the worst I’ve ever encountered. It took 15 mins to even get a live person on the phone, then I was transferred SIX times. I finally spoke to a supervisor who said it’s not hertz’s responsibility to make sure their customers are informed.

So, when I rented the car and drove it off the lot it was really loud in the front end. I called the number for roadside service and they could hear how loud it was in the background of the phone call. She was awesome and set me up with the airport to go back, and get a different vehicle. It wasn't where I got it and was an hour out of my way...but worth it to get a different vehicle. The gentleman on that end of returning and getting a new car was incredible.

The car was much better than the first and my trip went awesome. It is after my trip that I want to complain about. I always take my own EZPass with me and on my credit card bill there was several Hertztoll charges on there? I do not know why?? There shouldn't be any and this is why I take my own EZpass?! I would like someone to get ahold of me regarding this, because I have tried several times to call and email with no luck. I am getting ready to rent a car again and this will make the difference of where I rent from. Thank you!

I bought a car through the Hertz Rent2Buy program. All smoothing sailing to find the car I like, test drive it for three days under its rental period, and make the decision to buy. The sales office was helpful to get the transaction completed. However, when Hertz gets their money, there is absolutely ZERO contact. Try calling the sales office... goes to voicemail whose inbox is full. Try emailing agents... ghosted. I had to resort to writing a google script which would send an email every hour to ask for the paperwork to finally close the sale and get my temp tags and registration.

In the meantime, until the sale was closed, I was getting charged $100 every day that the rental wasn't either returned or officially purchased. To the credit of the sales office, they did eventually respond and sent the paperwork. I am still bewildered at how I managed to fill out a purchase order and wire money, only to be sent the EXACT SAME purchase order electronically days later electronically. At this point I already wired the money and thought the contract was signed. Overall very pleased with my purchase, but not pleased at all with the sales office in Cincinnati. Future purchases from Hertz will avoid this office.

What I experienced was a lack of communication which will be explained further. I had to extend the time for the rental and I called several times but no one answered. I finally had to drive to the Hertz location myself to get anything done. On the day that my own vehicle was finished from the collision center, I called Hertz several times but again, no one answered. How I handled this was to drive the rental car to the collision shop and leave it for Hertz to pick up. The personnel at the shop agreed to let Hertz know. Under the circumstances, I felt that I had no other choice. In addition, I was overcharged because I was still billed for days beyond the day that I dropped the vehicle off. When I described earlier that I had to drive to the Hertz location myself, it was not only to extend the contract but to no longer be charged for the damage physical waiver. I was still billed up until the last rental day even though I explained that I no longer wanted it.

I am disputing these additional charges and I have not heard back. If I cannot get this resolved, I will involve the New York State Attorney General to help me resolve the matter. I read other complaints brought against Hertz such as their not answering calls during business hours. I see that I am not alone because of my own experience. From a public relations standpoint, this is not good business practice for Hertz and is why I would never consider renting another car from them again.

I rented a car from Hertz at Heathrow Airport in London last Autumn through Booking.com. I just wanted a small car and I paid for comprehensive "all perils" insurance. I had a very negative experience. I waited in the waiting room for over 20 minutes for service after I took my number from the machine. The agent I spoke to was very offhand, took advantage of the fact that I had just got off a sleepless overnight flight, and ripped me off. I showed him my permanent Hertz Gold Card, but he told me it was out of date.

He then told me that my insurance coverage wasn't recognized by Hertz, and that I needed to pay for their full coverage insurance or else I had no insurance coverage. I declined. He asked me if I wanted GPS. I was indifferent but said yes, if that was the choice. He said he's given me a small upgrade to make sure that I got it. I said that I would bring the car back full of gas. I signed the contract to get out of there as quickly as I could, to get on my way.

On the way to the car he told me not to worry about filling the car up, when I returned it. The car was bigger and fancier than I wanted but I had no choice at that point and just wanted to get going. When I got to my destination I looked at the contact and realized that I had signed for an almost 400 GBP upgrade charge, and a 75 GBP charge for a fuel purchase option. I had tire problems from the start that resulted in me buying a new tire during the rental. When I returned the car, once again I was in a hurry and so I didn't mention the tire. I was handed a printed rental record that showed an instant credit card payment of 622.78 GBP. This was more than I had paid Booking.com for the rental in the first place ! It also included another charge of 42 GBP for a 'Vehicle Licence Fee". I was not allowed to question the payment at the time.

When I got home I tried to call Hertz customer service but found there was no way to do this, I had to send an email explaining my situation. I wanted to speak to a real person but I only reached a robot that told me I should have read the whole rental contract before I had signed it. I couldn't get in touch with anyone who was prepared to listen or who cared about my situation. The emails and robots passed me from one to the other, obviously trying to get me so frustrated that I would quit, which in the end of course, I did. I was taken advantage of, and manipulated by the agent I had spoken to. He probably got a bonus for doubling my rental cost. I will never put myself in the hands of someone like that again. I've always been happy with Enterprise, so back I will go. I'll never rent from Hertz again.

Absolutely do not rent from Hertz at the Kalamazoo Airport. Worst experience ever today. I had a reservation today for a car rental, that my personal training client was going to pay for. They refused to allow my client to pay for rental for me, and said that they would match the price that we were offered on Expedia, but that the rental would have to be in his name. So I canceled my Expedia reservation so that my friend would not be double charged from both Expedia in my name, and through Hertz in his name. The woman never offered to change the reservation in the Hertz system to my friends name, or set up a new rental in his name. Plus refused to honor my reservation because my friend was paying for it. So he was sent away and said, that she could not help him. This was all at 2:30 pm. Then when we went back at 4:30 pm when I was present.

The same woman told me that she could not rent to me because I no longer had a reservation through Expedia. Had I not canceled my reservation before 4 pm, it my friend would have been charged twice, once for the reservation in my name and once in his name. Then she stated, "Well next time maybe you should come and get your rental car instead of go get your hair done first". Who talks to customers this way? So we ended up having to rent from Avis, which cost us over $100 more than the initial reservation we had with Hertz. Not only was this woman unhelpful, but she was unprofessional, and rude in her language.

I rented a car at Nashville Airport on 12/19. I drove across the street to a hotel where I stayed. I drove the car fine until Saturday 12/20. That day it showed that the tire pressure was low. It was cold out and it happens. I aired up the tire and went on my way. On Monday 12/22 in the evening the tire pressure was low again. The next morning I took the car to Goodyear because I thought maybe I picked up a nail. No, it was an old improper unsafe tire plug that the leak was from due to no fault of mine per the tech at Goodyear. I immediately called Hertz and they told me that because I did not report it within the 1st hour it was my responsibility. Obviously there is no way I would have noticed a faulty plug on the vehicle within the hour. I was asleep! They told me I could air up the tire and bring the car back which was almost 100 miles away...On a bad tire.

After arguing with Hertz and asking them if they were going to pay for a new flight if I missed mine due to a blow out or better yet what if I wrecked the vehicle due to the unsafe conditions and yes I threatened lawsuit if that happened. I finally convinced them to fix or replace the tire at Goodyear. So tire was fixed and I had Goodyear give it to me in writing the reason due to the unsafe improper tire plug. I just had a gut feeling there would be an issue. So I returned the vehicle and noticed I was charged $71.49 for the tire repair. Now remind you I have in writing a copy of the service bill from Goodyear with everything explained.

The tire patch cost Hertz $26.49 but yet I was charged $71.49. They told me again it was my responsibility because I did not report it within the 1st hour. When I told the guy that I had it in writing that it was not my fault and they Hertz gave me unsafe vehicle to drive and asking them why was I being charged $71.49 for a $26.49 repair he quickly said as a courtesy we will refund your money. Courtesy? Are you kidding me? I never got an answer for the difference in price or truly got an apology from anyone from Hertz. I never got any acknowledgment from them taking responsibility. Unfortunately, the assistant store manager was rude and disrespectful. They did not have any rentals available within my budget of $25 per day. I was informed of additional fees, which I expected to be around $9 to $40 a week, but upon returning the car, I discovered I had to pay over $250 out-of-pocket for this rental, despite not being at fault.

Furthermore, on December 30, when I returned the car, I learned later that day from my bank that an associate at the San Pablo Hertz location attempted to charge my credit card $1,100 on November 28 and an additional $12,078 on the 30th, even though the car was due back on the 31st. I returned it on the 30th, which makes this situation even more absurd. When I approached the staff to resolve this, they shrugged it off, telling me to redirect my energy elsewhere and not to worry since the charges were declined. This behavior raises concerns of potential fraud.

I filed a complaint with the corporate office and am now waiting 5 to 7 days for a response regarding the unauthorized charges that led to my bank account being blocked. This is my brother’s first time renting car and he’s not sure how it works so he’s asking questions. My brother used Tap to pay for the downpayment and the lady is saying that it’s not going through but we see on our account that it took out $1 each try. So I'm not sure what’s happening.

Second, we tried checking in online instead and received a notification that we’re checked in and go to the counter to get the car, once my brother went to the counter again, a different agent helped him a male one. He’s telling my brother that he’s not seeing check in on his end and to just redo everything at the counter. My brother then asked is there any other way to do the downpayment since using his debit will charge him $500. I know that there’s policy and we would definitely comply but my brother just asked just in case since he’s not familiar with how it works. The male agent just laughed at his face and repeated my brother’s question “is there any other way?”. If that tiny interaction wouldn’t make a person embarrassed and feel messed up then I don’t know what else will.

I was on the phone with my brother and hearing this whole interaction and that sucks so bad especially when my brother called him out saying why is he laughing because it’s not a laughing matter but seriously asking. He didn’t need to do that to my brother at all but he did. So messed up. I can’t believe someone like this is working at a front agent, a job that requires patience and excellent customer service which clearly they don’t have. I would like someone to address this or contact us to apologize because this experience is messed up. The rude interaction was so unnecessary.

It wasn’t until he essentially kicked me out and my car again didn’t start that with no option left.

He gave me a smaller vehicle which was “the only thing” available (According to him) and then proceeded throw the keys along with the new contract and did not even bother to point me where the vehicle was; with it being Christmas Eve I was not about to lose any more of my day on this matter so I let it be and went through with the rest of my contact with the leftover vehicle.

Sadly after presenting my case to the manager at the origin office (Coral **). He was completely unfazed by it (Probably such behavior is the norm with this company). All these said, I still was charged $10 over contract price because by mistake was it closed as if my drop off location was Ft Lauderdale; so in the end I drove a car below what I paid for, was treated like garbage on Christmas Eve and still was wrongfully charged a change fee that while small it just piles on top of the terrible service.

I did reach out online to HERTZ customer service on the day of the inconvenience and to this day I only got their confirmation of case received to my email and nothing else, meaning corporate doesn’t care either. I personally witnessed Logan blatantly lie to a customer, telling her she needed insurance for break-ins and pressuring her to buy their insurance because the area is “so bad,” even claiming he’d have to max out her card for damages. This behavior is beyond unprofessional—it’s disgraceful and tarnishes the Hertz name. While I’ll rent from Hertz again, I will never set foot in this location.

I picked up a car from Cleveland Hopkins airport on 11/18/2024. Quickly, I saw that the check engine light had come on. Soon after that, I noticed that the car would "jump" when shifting and it got to the point that on the night of December 10th, the car would not get up to speed on the highway, topping out at 40ish mph. On 12/11 I called Hertz and over the course of FOUR days, was told that my options were that I could A) go to the closest Hertz location and end up paying out of pocket for the only available car which was a higher class than I had received. B) Drive the malfunctioning car an hour to the original pickup location. C) Have the car towed and ride with the tow truck driver an hour, C) have a Lyft ordered to take me to the original pickup location, or D) Get a voucher for me to take the rental car into a garage to get it fixed.

I am absolutely APPALLED at the service, or lack thereof, that I received. I am in Ohio on business and simply do not have time to waste half of a day driving an hour back and forth to the original pickup location plus going through whatever the exchange process would be. Nor should I have been asked to do so! I rented a car for convenience, not to waste hours on end fixing the situation myself when it wasn't my issue in the beginning.

The company should have simply paid the independent location the difference of the cost of the new car I was given. End of story. I wasn't even assured that I would be reimbursed retroactively for the difference in price. I was just told that I could ask at the original pickup location when I dropped the car off to see if they would reimburse me. Are you kidding me?? This was such an easy solution! How was it not handled in an appropriate way?? I have truly never been more disgusted with a company and if it weren't for the fact that my company requires me to rent through Hertz, I would NEVER rent from them again.

Garbage customer service! I made a reservation minimum 3 weeks in advance, got to the DFW airport and went to go pick up the car I had rented. There I was informed of the $500 security deposit for debit cards. I took a minute to think about my options and went ahead and put the deposit down, which actually ended up being $659. Since we were traveling a bit further than just around Dallas we decided to upgrade the vehicle from an economy class car to an SUV class car. Rachid at the Hertz counter at DFW airport was incredible! Like I can express how helpful and kind he was! (The 2 stars are for Rachid at the DFW hertz counter, the rest of the experience get no stars!)

After the unexpected $500 security deposit, everything went great… until I saw the bill and all of the charges on my debit card. It was showing that I had been charged not once but 6 (SIX!!!!) separate times. Once was for my original reservation $173.11, another for $659 for the security deposit (it was only supposed to be for $500, not $659), another for $172.53 (unsure where this came from), another for $13.41 (again unsure) another for $1 (still unsure) and the last one was for $208.91. If you did the math that’s $1,227.69 when it was only supposed to be $221.11 (without the security deposit, with the security deposit it should have been $721.11). Again if you did the math that’s roughly $490 (without counting the $500 deposit) extra Hertz charged me. WHERE IS MY MONEY!?!? So I call customer support and the first person I spoke to tried to help but was getting nowhere so I requested to speak with a manager.

Tell me why I had to ask the customer support person 10 times before they put me through to a manager. The manager was as helpful as watching paint dry. She couldn’t explain to me why all of this money was gone from my bank account, showing that all the charges were from Hertz. Come to find out that Hertz canceled my initial reservation and then made a new reservation that I had to pay for on top of the initial reservation cost. And that $500 security deposit, yeah nope it was $659. And then there were the other charges that they had no idea about or where they came from.

I’m not a person who gets angry at customer service, I’ve been on the receiving end of those calls, but I genuinely had to be mean to get any kind of help. Because she had no answers for the missing money, they are refunding me $332, however it took over 2 hours to get to this resolution. Needless to say I will not be renting from Hertz ever again.

Lost a 27 year Gold member to overcharges and terrible customer service. My problem is with the corporation, not the local kids they hire, understaff, and pay peanuts to. Don't ever opt for the "pre-paid" programs for gas, tolls, or insurance, because each of these is a huge, overstuffed profit center for an international company that does this to everyone. And, always check your car before you accept it for damage/mechanical issues and get the hard copy of your receipt with the exact mileage and accounting of current and possible future charges when you return your rental because that IS your only solid ground when you find odd charges to your credit card later on that don't make sense.

1- You can add on rental car insurance to your regular auto for +/- $40 biannually, instead of paying it to Hertz Daily. 2- You can plan enough time to fill up the tank before you return for a lot less. 3- I'm really not a fan of "drive through tolls booths and much prefer paying as I go, when it's an option. This "daily toll" flat rate program Hertz offers is the biggest rip off of all; it adds on a "convenience fee" for each toll Segment on top of the daily rate, plus, if you rent for a week and only incur tolls 1 day out of the 7, they charge you extra if your tolls exceed the daily rate, plus you're billed for the total cost of the tolls! They billed my card for all of that, then additionally shared my card # to pay the toll company for the tolls as well! (How can that even be legal?!)

I've been double and triple charged over cost of the actual service provided in every one of the instances I opted for items 1-3 which also doubled/tripled the amount of my actual rental. Multiply that $1-200 in over-charges by 100,000 rentals and it adds up to $1-200 MILLION in unearned profits! Multiply it by every rental they've made and will make, and it adds up to one of the most egregious unchecked price gouging side-gigs other than storage units and construction materials after a hurricane! And, when you try to politely negotiate a refund of the over-charges, you get passed around to 5 different departments/managers who won't do the right thing, much less offer a discount on your next rental, even after 30 years as a "Gold" member. Terrible bait and switch marketing and even worse customer service! No wonder so many businesses and individuals refuse to use them and have switched their company expense accounts to other vendors.

However, due to flight delays, I'm going to just miss this window. If you make the crime of booking with a 3rd party (e.g. Expedia) even if you have a confirmation number of rental record number from Hertz, you can't modify anything online.

So, I tried calling the local rental office (BWI). I tried and tried and tired. No one ever answered the phone. After about a minute of rings it disconnects you. Tried for hours. No one answered despite it being in the middle of the work day. I then called the national customer service office. "Nothing we can do; you have to contact the local rental office." Ok, great. But if they don't answer the damn phone, then what? I'm done with Hertz. I used to have acceptable service with them but it is a disaster now. It’s common for military members to have a license from their home state, but live in another state with a different billing address. I explained this to the hertz people. This is a simple issue shouldn’t be a problem to resolve. BUT, the Hertz employees were far too lazy to even attempt basic customer service. I reserved a car for two days in January from Hertz at Houston airport through expedia and also purchased the unlimited tolls for the duration. I took the car on January 26th and returned it on 28th about 2 hours before return time. The attendant informed me that I will get my receipt thru e-mail and if I need a printed receipt I have to go inside the office and wait on line. After several calls they agreed to reverse the additional day's charge and toll and credit me additional $50 for the inconvenience. However, I did not see any refunds/credits on the credit card and asked my credit card to dispute the bill. WARNING: Hertz does not do an adequate safety inspection of their vehicles prior to releasing them to their customers. I was provided a high mileage out of state Camry with a severe and potentially dangerous bulge in the right front tire. The bulge was due to a previous accident by a previous driver. Due to the poor lighting at the rental facility the bulge was not apparent to me upon inspection prior to driving it off the lot. Once identified, I was told that there was a very high probability that the tire would explode and it was dangerous to drive with the defect in the tire and that using the temporary tire was not recommended since it had already been used and quite well worn. I replaced the defective tire. Because I did not elect to purchase the accident coverage with the vehicle, Hertz was not willing to help with covering even part of the cost of the new tire.

Customer service has been no help and despite multiple requests, emails and messages to speak with Hertz representative/supervisor, I have hot heard from anyone at Hertz. Because Hertz releases unsafe and dangerous vehicles to their customers to rent and drive, I would recommend that all customers NOT rent from Hertz. It should NOT be the customer’s responsibility to do a complete and thorough inspection of all parts of the vehicle prior to taking any vehicle from a Hertz facility. I am horrified with the treatment I have received and I make this recommendation since Hertz will not stand behind the quality and safety of any of their fleet of vehicles. You really don’t want to rent from Hertz. Especially do not prepay for a vehicle. They do not care how far in advance you book, they never have the car and you will not get a refund. They also give charges to your card for hundreds of dollars extra after they give you a receipt for a different total and you don’t find out until you get your credit card statement how much Hertz stole from you. Then when you inquire about the charge, they refuse to give you an answer and they refuse to credit your card. Then when you file a dispute on your credit card, they put you in collections and put you on a do not rent list.

Also, they keep charging your card after you return your rental and refuse to stop the charges and they file police reports stating that you stole the car. The workers have attitude problems and they never know what is going on. No one is ever in the office if answers their phone. Just avoid this company at all costs. You are better off walking than getting scammed. The company has declined considerably. This use to be a pristine company and it is no longer.

I asked what was the point of me making a reservation and she was replied, "I don’t have any control over what’s in the system…." There was no offer of resolution whatsoever. The same thing happened at Hertz counter in Las Vegas two weeks ago. One agent and a long line and long wait. STAY AWAY FROM HERTZ unless you enjoy wasting your precious time!!

I received a text to take photos of the car, which I did not do. Instead I walked around the car and saw that there was no damage. When I returned the car, however, the employees at the Denver Airport immediately beehived around the front left fender area of the car and pointed out damage to the vehicle. The damage was to a recessed, gasketed, grill covered lower parking light. The damage was not visible until the gasketed area was manually pushed in. It would not have been visible in a photograph, and it was not visible when I initially inspected the car. Unfortunately, I was required to sign an acceptance statement of responsibility for the damage before the car could be released. Since I had a flight to catch, I had no choice but to sign the statement. I have since received a repair bill from the Hertz Corporation to be in the amount of $1,077.58. So take pictures and inspect with extreme care before you rent a car from Hertz, Dollar, or Thrifty. This company is incorporating some very deleterious ways to re-coop financial losses at the customer's expense.

I am part of Hertz's President Circle, so renting is very convenient. I rented a car from Hertz Milwaukee Airport Location on Friday, October 11th for two days. Instead of keeping the car two days I arrived back in town early, so I returned the car 1 day early on Saturday, October 12th. Since there were no attendants on duty I called and spoke to someone at Hertz. They told me to lock the vehicle and put the keys in the drop box. I followed their instructions exactly.

They finally checked the car in on Sunday, October 13th and sent me a receipt for the entire two days instead of one day. Then later on Sunday, October 13th, they sent me a receipt saying that they charged me $500 to clean the car because of smoking. I have never smoked anything in my life and no one that has ever ridden in any car I have owned or driven has ever smoked in it.

When I tried to call Hertz, you cannot talk to a live person. You have to fill out a form online and they promise to get back to you within 3-5 days. I have submitted the same complaint 3 times, and I have yet to hear from Hertz. This is absolutely ridiculous but is along the lines of other people's recent experiences. It is why I think I will have to change car rental companies. Because of the reviews of others, I have been having Hertz check in the vehicle and create a receipt instantly because of the horror stories that others have written about. I completely understand those stories now. Their actions are shady and a money grab. At this point I am going to dispute the charges, write as many bad reviews as I possibly can, so I can help others avoid this experience and pursue other means of getting credit for these charges. Just disappointed at what used to be a company with exceptional customer service.

The reservation was made with my flight information on it, yet somehow they claimed I told them I’d be there earlier and since I “didn’t get there in time” they gave my car to someone else, I was an hour later than they had recorded.

I also had my reservation showing that I’d made the reservation using my flight information and not a specific time. I spent the first four hours of my vacation waiting on a car while everyone I spoke to shrugged their shoulders and made a rude remark. On Sept.15th, 2022, I rented a Vehicle from Hertz at the Chilliwack Airport. I had to request my Invoice-Receipt several days after returning the Vehicle in order to reconcile my expenses. The Invoice was dated Oct.20th, 2022 and I rented the Vehicle for 9 days. Once I received it, I noted a charge of $107.00 which I wasn't told about at the time of renting the Vehicle. When I later inquired with "Lorna" at the Airport office, she informed me that it was a "deductible" in the event of an accident and subsequent insurance claim.

When I rented the Vehicle, "Lorna" asked me if I wanted Insurance to which I declined as I have ICBC Roadstar coverage. Well, there were no accidents or claims but she informed me that the $107.00 would have to be refunded from HQ and couldn't be done from the local (Airport) office. I requested that she get back to me several times over the next 18 months and she never responded except when I directly engaged with her.

It's now been two years since this debacle began and after numerous E-mails back & forth with HQ, their Customer Service team tells me that due to the timeline, they want a monetary fee from me so they can review the matter in order to consider returning the $107.00 to me. This was due to the failure of "Lorna" at the Airport office failing to elevate this to HQ in a timely manner like she informed me that she would.

Bottom line... I'm still out of pocket for $107.00 but the C.S. Team in the USA thanks me for my business and looks forward to serving me again. To date, I have informed everyone at our B.C. wide Company and my circle of Associates and Friends to avoid renting from Hertz if at all possible and it's working. To date, 5 (nope... 9) rentals have been carried out by Colleagues and Family and none of them were from Hertz.

If, due to any other Rental not being available, CHECK YOUR BILL and get it up from. Yes... I have been ripped off $107.00 from Hertz and after numerous communications with both "Lorna" and Hertz Customer Service. I'm no closer to rightfully getting my money back than I was in October, 2022. DO NOT rent a Vehicle from Hertz... especially Hertz, Chilliwack. ***Subsequent to this Google Review, I have once again been informed that Hertz will look into the matter. I've been told this several times over the last two years and they always end their responses by telling me that they look forward to my future business. Trust me, it will never happen.

Hertz is awful. I pre paid for my rental with Apple Pay and when I got to the counter they couldn’t use my Apple Card because it uses a virtual number. I called customer service and had them change my pre paid card and the still couldn’t use my card at the counter because the phone agent ran my card as a Visa and it was Mastercard. They said they’d refund my card after cancelling my reservation and starting over.

At this time I had 2 refunds coming in 7-10 days. It takes that long to refund. I called back asked for some type of receipt showing I’d get a refund as I got no email and they told me my refund is processing. After about 8 days I called and asked the refunds were processed. By this time I had 3 refunds coming. One for 51 dollars was my fault. Booked wrong return location so I immediately cancelled. 1 other transaction on my Apple Card 89 dollars and one on my Tjmaxx card. Got 1 apple transaction back. The 51 dollar they said it was a hold I told them it was not a hold my complete rental transaction was a different transaction.

When I left the airport they owed me 225 in refunds. 1 because the agent ran my card as a visa for 89.67 1 because of the pre paid 89.98 and the 51.00. By the time Ieft the airport these jokers had 200.00 hold on my card, a pre paid payment for 89.00, 51.00 refund pending over 500.00 in total between holds and refunds. They don’t send emails for reservations cancelled via phone. When I spoke to customer service they were of no help at all and last and final when I returned the car they gave me which they called an upgrade I asked the agent if the car had a distinct but not foul smell in it. The agent said yes it smelled of mold. Mind you I had to drive 300 plus miles in this stinky car. Still haven’t got back 2 of my refunds and had to open disputes with my credit card companies.

Their agents were awesome at the Allentown counter with helping me best as they could, but the phone agents are AWFUL. It sounded like a party in the background at the center I called. The agent hung up on me without looking into my other refunds though I was polite. They need to fire all their phone center people and start over. Remember one ran my card as a Visa though it was a master card. I found this out from the counter agent when they tried to use a different card for payment it required them to run the old payment card. That’s when she said call them back they ran it as a visa.

By this time the next phone agent said the reservation has been changed multiple times and I must start over. This was their fault not mine's. They cost me money, time, anguish, and I will NOT USE THIS COMPANY EVER AGAIN, and will ensure all my friends and relatives know not to as well. Do yourself a favor and go to Enterprise or some other company who will treat you as a consumer not as money.

Worst experience EVER!!! My brother passed away in late August and we headed to Las Vegas for the service. As usual I made the reservation with them and pre paid for the car. I am/was a president's circle member so I was used to their system. I called the day before to confirm my reservation, then I called the morning of travel again to try to ensure a smooth trip as I was stressed out already. Arrived at the rental desk to pick up my car and to my surprise no car was available. I told them I called the day before and just a few hours ago and was told everything was good to go. The desk guy informed me that it would be several hours before a vehicle would be ready, and there was only a luxury SUV available that would be an extra 100 a day. I asked why I had to wait or pay an extra fee for a car that should have been ready when I arrived.

He then told me he was not allowed to make those decisions without CORPORATE approval. (Apparently Hertz desk people cannot be trusted to take care of customers needs on their own) so we waited 3 hours and when they called up us to get the vehicle it was a compact car, when I reserved a large SUV. I said, "This is not the car I wanted" and paid for the desk told me "that's all they had" and I said, "Well are you going to adjust my rate." He told me no and I would have to call the corporate office to apply for a refund. The car was filthy inside and out, (see photos) had a taillight out (I know this because I was stopped by PD for the taillight) and wipers that did not work.

This process is maddening, just to speak to someone at all let alone to get any kind of refund or even a mutually beneficial resolution to the matter. As I have said before I was a presidents circle member due to my business travels (I own the business) and all my people travel using Hertz as well, I was finally transferred to a "loyalty" customer service representative. I explained the situation and they said there was nothing they could do, I said he was wrong that there was nothing he was GOING to do. I then told him to cancel my corporate and personal account. He just said "Ok" and did that right away.

I got a call two weeks after from a corporate sales manager asking why I cancelled my accounts. I explained what happened and he said he would take care of it and I told him no I would not be doing business with them ever again after making such a somber trip worse than I could imagine. He was the ONLY Hertz employee that expressed any regret for losing my business. We as a company have rented from Hertz over 500 times and the customer service gets worse and worse every year. I don't think they will be around for too much longer at this rate.

Rented a car from these guys from Harry Reid international Airport Las Vegas at 0700 on 31/08/2024 dropping off at Mason Street San Francisco on 0700 at 01/09/2024. Advised that the organisation (if you want to call it that) was in operation 24 hours. Arrived at 2300 hours on 31/08/24 to return the car. (Building was closed) Meaning I had to park the vehicle in the multi storey car park and pay an additional $38 for that. No staff on sight to take responsibility or receipt of the keys.... When I returned to speak with staff and close the deal in the morning, I was charged for an additional day, despite Hertz advertising a 24 hour service at this location with massive subsidiaries they use such as "Booking.com" (False Advertisement).

I was charged $85 for additional rental for a full day. I also returned the vehicle with half a tank of fuel. I had fueled in Bakersfield. This cost me $80 and got 13 Gallons at Moto. Returned the car with a half tank of gas. These Hertz pirates then charged me for 9 Gallons of gas despite getting the vehicle back with a half tank, so I was only due to be charged on or around 4.5 Gallons. They charged $10.99 for each gallon. Check the small print....Hidden charges galore!! I was in dispute about the fuel and this has still not been resolved or refunded for the additional over charge of 4.5 gallons at $10.99. Manager was Hugh at Mason Street Hertz and was extremely dismissive and couldn't understand simple math when it came to the gallons of fuel. Despite being shown my receipt of fuel purchased at the start of my trip.

Hertz corporate were as equally useless and dismissive and inattentive over the phone, attitude disgusting, not the service expected of a wordwide company. Used hertz in Portugal in Europe and had no issues such as this. The only person who was civil enough and polite was Leo at Mason Street Hertz, he had a nice attitude and was smartly and professionally dressed.

Concerning me I also noted an unsafe working practice whereby staff have the customers drive the returned vehicles two way directions over a one lane ramp up the ramp to the second floor of the multi storey car park (the lanes are extremely narrow). This almost caused me to collide with another vehicle who was coming down the same ramp and this is seen as a safe working practice for customers ??? Now keep in mind if you crash the car your rental car you are liable for the damage until keys are handed back as the customer. Hertz would not take responsibility for this. The manager Hugh complicit in this unsafe act.

Hertz are complicit in this unsafe act. Worst company I have ever dealt with for car rental. The hidden charges and dubiety with opening hours are disgusting. Stop false advertising through your subsidiary companies. This is illegal. Hertz Corporate need to address this with Booking.com and not pass the buck to the customers!!!! All in all, great vehicle the Subaru Outback, enjoyed the drive but would definitely not use, recommend or even contemplate Hertz. Absolutely ripping customers off with excessive charges, customer service was a disgrace too.

We trusted them to test the safety features before renting out their vehicle and it almost ended in tragedy. We were driving down the highway to a funeral, as a sheet of rain came down and that's when we realized that we didn't have working windshield wipers. Suddenly blinded on the freeway, my wife and daughter have to roll down their windows and two to navigate visually through the rain while helping me to steer out of danger and into an underpass where Hertz was less than helpful to assist. Fortunately a police officer came to help us. We showed up late and completely soaked to the funeral. Hertz charged us full price. I reserved a car through Hertz car rental that was to be picked up at 10 a.m. on August 30th. For the entire week before getting the car I continued to get text messages asking me to confirm my rental which I did. On the day I was to get the rental I received a call from Hertz employee Rokim 45 minutes before I was to pick up the car informing me they didn’t have a car available for me and they were cancelling my car. Mind you was already packed for my trip getting ready to be dropped off. When I questioned why they didn’t realize this until 45 minutes before I was picking it up he said they are short on cars. My response to him was, "When I made the reservation you mean to tell me that hertz doesn’t have an inventory to tell that there isn’t enough cars available and not to take the reservation." He responded that this is an ongoing problem and to take it up with corporate.

I said, "Do you have any cars available." He said, "Expedition but you have to pay the up charges for it." I said, "Since it is your issue you are not going to give me the expedition for the price I was to pay for the car I ordered" and he said, "No." I asked if he could look at another Hertz for me and said no. I needed to do that. I called corporate and spoke to Ander who was just as useless as Rokim/ He told me that if I had a complaint I would have to rent the car return it and then write to corporate to see if I could get compensation. He again was totally missing the point which is why is Hertz taking reservations if they don’t have cars available.

He then stated the call center is in another country and it is my responsibility to call and check to make sure the car is available. Well when you get constant text messages confirming your reservation you expect the car to be there for your reservation. Hertz needs to be investigated on their business practices because it’s unethical. People need to be aware of how Hertz operates.

Long story short, I failed to take pictures prior to driving out from the parking lot (never again). So, okay - I can't prove I didn't do it, and I submitted a claim to my insurance company figuring they could use the "SafeLight" process to repair it. My insurance paid Hertz $591 for a new windshield! I guess Hertz is getting over on the insurance company, and I was willing to let it go. HOWEVER, I just got a letter from Hertz saying I now owe $840.43. That is absurd. Over $1,400 for a windshield? Absolutely not - they'll not see a nickel from me and I'm filing a BBB complaint today. Beware of Hertz - they are the bottom of the barrel for rental car companies.

My flight with Condor, flight number DE2075 on March 8, 2024, from Baltimore, USA, to Frankfurt, Germany, was three hours late. I tried to call the Hertz Frankfurt Airport office while I was still at BWI airport (local time 11:30 PM), but the airport office was closed at that time. I asked my sister in Germany to call there in the morning and send an email. She was also unsuccessful in calling the Hertz office at the airport; the automatic answering machine reported "The person you are calling is not available!" She wrote an email to Hertz with my name, airline, flight number, voucher number, reservation number and delayed arrival time and asked them to have the vehicle ready for me.

None of this interested the Hertz desk person, he said that Hertz would only hold the vehicles for two hours and then cancel the reservation, and also showed me the cancellation on his computer and said again that I I should have called or send an email. I showed him the email that my sister wrote to Hertz, but he just said: The vehicle was canceled and there was nothing he could do about it. He offered me to wait, and perhaps a vehicle in the same class would be returned. The waiting time would be between two and six hours.

It wasn't possible for me to add any more delay to my trip, and I already knew that even after six hours there wouldn't have been a vehicle available for me and I would probably have had to wait in the airport until the next day. After I told him his offer was unacceptable, he offered to take another vehicle for an additional fee. I had no other option because I had already paid for the reserved vehicle when I made the reservation in March and would have lost that money if I refused.

This Hertz employee's behavior bordered on fraudulent intent. I was presented with impossible alternatives, and I can't shake the impression that this gentleman was only interested in receiving the bonus for the vehicle upgrade. When I returned the vehicle, a Hertz employee added a refueling fee of €329.76. I showed him the fuel receipt, and it was clear from the car instrument panel that the vehicle was delivered with a full tank. This employee then informed me that he is only a third-party provider and that I needed to go to the Hertz counter to clarify this. Again, I had to line up at the Hertz counter and explain the situation; fortunately, someone at the counter was able to assist me in clarifying and correcting this. Nothing about this reservation or dealing with Hertz was easy or hassle-free, resulting in more annoyance than satisfaction. Be aware and avoid Hertz!

They were instructed to fill out a lost item report online and would be contacted with an update.

Two days later we get an update that they item has not been found. What I don't understand is why they would not let my in laws or an employee go back to the van to get the sunglasses. Whoever cleaned the van before the next people rented it may not have even known about the report and could have taken the sunglasses without saying anything. It's so frustrating that I can't even talk to anyone about their process for when an item is reported missing and what they have done to find my son's sunglasses. Know the hidden fees from Dollar/Hertz when you decline their insurance. I had rented a car from Dollar / Hertz 14 April (10 pm) to 16 April (5 pm) 2024 (2 days) at the Toronto Pearson airport. Because I have a TD travel card, I had declined the rental company's insurance waiver as instructed by TD’s auto insurance plan so that I didn’t need to worry if I had an accident. I learned the hard way that neither TD nor our personal car insurance covers the rental company’s hidden fees (administrative fees, and diminishment of value of the vehicle) if there is an accident.

On the 15 April I went to Walmart and returned to find that somebody had hit the driver-side door of my rental car, causing a small dent that was approximately 3 inches in diameter and a lot of mud left behind. After the hit-and-run I had contacted the police who pointed out that the vehicle's insurance had expired. I then called TD credit card auto insurance to start the claim process, and then I called the rental car company. This took 2 hours in total to sort out before I could leave the Walmart parking lot. I had my mother with me, and this wasn't how I wanted to start our vacation. I had surprised my mom with a trip to England to celebrate her 80th birthday.

It took 2 months for Hertz to contact me to inform me that the cost for the damage was $1584.32. I was shocked by the cost, and I asked why it was so high. From what I understood, they needed to paint the other doors as well so that the colour was the same. I had requested a copy of the invoice be emailed to me, but I still haven’t received it.

Today, 8 July, the TD auto insurance section finally sent me an email with an attached letter informing me that Global Excel Management Inc., will only reimburse Hertz $1108.84 out of the $1584.32 owed to Hertz. (TD auto insurance falls under Global Excel Management Inc) Global Excel Management Inc. will not cover the admin fee ($250) nor the diminishment of value ($175.79) that Hertz has demanded in their invoice. Therefore, I am on the hook for a total of $425.79.

If I had been informed of these hidden fees upfront, I would have selected Hertz’s insurance coverage of $36 a day extra for two days as it would have been cheaper compared to the hidden admin fee and diminishment of value fee. Customers need to be given the correct information so that they can make the right choice when renting vehicles from rental car companies. By neglecting to share and reiterate important information to the customer during the pick-up of a rental vehicle that it is a dishonest way to conduct business.

Not one agent was there to check the car out when I dropped it off, so it’s safe to assume they made an error but customer service refused to reimburse me the $54. If I could give no stars I would. To take advantage of people by forcing them to pay for something one did not need and refusing to give the refund because you signed it. Excuse is trash. It was 11:30 at night after we landed and got to the location to get the car. The guy at the counter kept saying, "No you need it." "No you need it, this is for something different" and NEVER once stating properly what the hell we were paying for after multiple times asking. I don’t care that his English was broken, English is my second language, but to use it to his advantage of never having to fully give an answer is awful and clearly can tell we were tired.

We called the next day and spent hours to get ahold of someone on the line and never did. At that point my husband got into the car and went to the airport to talk to them. When he finally got someone on the phone, lady stated to call back when we return the rental for the refund. The lack of any help or answers between that time is poor service. You are a multibillion company yet you have piss poor service and morals.

But for Hertz it was not enough to simply share the profit with priceline. They gave me some document to sign, pretending this is proof of car rental, instead it was a WAIVER OF COLLISION DAMAGE INSURANCE! Be aware of a total SCAM!!! Hertz is implementing with a smile of the face of their employees this additional fees making you believe you only giving the consent to deposit in case of any additional damages! So basically I paid double for the same car rental, and because there is my signature on the document, I did agree to the charges even I didn't realize it and they don't want to refund it!

I rented from Hertz rent a car in 2 different locations in Greece. The Hertz in Paros Greece has terrible service. The guy deliberately rented me a car with a used spare tire on the car. I did not realize this when we rented the car. The tire blew out and we ended up with a flat tire. The Hertz guy said I owed them 90 Euros for the tire. I explained to the Hertz guy we had full coverage on the insurance. I told him I wanted an upgrade for the car because we had a lot of luggage and my family are all full size adults. The car he rented us was too small and unsafe. The tire blew out while we were climbing a large hill. The car was not capable of carrying my family or climbing a hill. The Hertz guy was argumentative and didn’t want to be helpful. Brings me the same small car that barely fit us and our luggage.

The Hertz guy wanted to save money and didn’t want to help me. I think an upgrade was is order for the inconvenience of the poor rental car. This Hertz guy's arguments seemed so ridiculous and uncooperative to provide better service. I really dislike Hertz now. We needed a bigger car and one that could handle my family.

I booked a Tesla Model 3 from Hertz UK via their website. The booking was confirmed at ~35 GBP per day. When I arrived at their Heathrow office they saw my booking and, after the normal upsell for insurance, we were on our way. Due to traffic around Heathrow, we were two hours over our return time. The car was checked in and we were told the receipt would be Emailed. I expected to be charged for an extra day's rental. Instead, not only were we charged for the extra day, but they charged a daily rate of ~118 GBP for the for the ENTIRE rental period. When I complained the Hertz representative said that is because I returned the car late and that voided the contract!

Hertz is the WORST rental agency I've used:

    - I am an Avis preferred platinum member & always book with them. The experience is seamless, smooth and customer-friendly 99% of the time. I've had 1 maybe 2 bad experiences and have booked at least 300 rental cars since being Avis preferred.

    - On this trip to Charlotte, NC, Avis had no vehicles in the area, so I had to use another company, which happened to be Hertz.

    - First, Hertz wanted to charge me $800 for a 2-day rental on a standard SUV class vehicle because I had to drive to Raleigh, NC from Charlotte, NC, and return the car in Raleigh which is a mere 135 miles away. If I were to return the car in Charlotte where I picked it up, the rental would have been $120 for 2-days. At this point, I had no options and my company is paying for it, however, believe this to be egregious and outrageous.

    - The Hertz manager in Charlotte gave me some sorry excuse for the alternate location drop off fee, citing that Hertz locations "sometimes have different owners and would have inventory problems if they let customers drop off their cars at some presumably unaffiliated location." What is the point of having multiple Hertz locations and why is there some obscene fee for a perfectly normal need from a renter, to pick up a rental vehicle and drop it off in another metro area. This is literally WHY people rent cars. It does not make sense to catch a flight from Charlotte to Raleigh when I can drive there in just over 2 hours. Hertz is basically charging me a very costly shipping fee to use an expected service of their platform.

    - The car pickup process was clunky and chaotic; they had a line of customers each from the different castes (Gold, Platinum, Gold+ blah blah blah) and had to manually assign cars in the garage one by one, leading to another wait time of about 10-15 minutes AFTER having to wait at the booking desk when you checked in. Maybe it was because they were busy, but I've never seen that with Avis.

    - I tried to call in to talk to a customer service agent to change my reservation's drop off location and was placed on hold for over 30-minutes. Changing the drop off location is not possible on their website, so I was forced to call in. The service agent from the Philippines call center was actually very friendly and more helpful than the manager in Charlotte, and tried to help me get a drop off at Raleigh without the insane fees.

    - There is also not live chat feature on their website, the only way to get customer support is to call their dreaded 1-800 number or submit a "contact me" form and hope they follow up by email.

Overall, I was very disappointed in Hertz's booking experience and policies. I will not be using them again.

Absolute WORST experience. If I could give less than 1 star I would. This is my first time renting with Hertz & will be my last. I made a reservation through the website but noticed it was not popping up on my loyalty account. I called to confirm the information only to find out my loyalty # did not attach to my reservation, which also meant my family discount was not applied. The representative stated she would cancel my first reservation & create a new one for me with my Hertz loyalty # & family discount attached. I asked if we could stay on the phone until it was done & I received my new confirmation email. The representative was extremely frustrated & rushed me off the phone. Mind you I waited 45 minutes for someone to answer. I had already prepaid $356 for my rental so she told me that amount would be applied towards the new rental reservation.

A day before my trip, I check my Hertz app to see a new reservation # but I am unable to see any information as it says “error” when I click on it. I received no email confirmation that my previous rental was canceled and no email info regarding the new reservation. I called AGAIN to see if someone could email me a copy of the new reservation info since I did not have access to it on my app. The representative tells me that he is unable to resend the confirmation email because it shows it already sent in his system. He also stated that I would have to pay another $325 for the new reservation at time of pick up. I explained that I had not received any info on my prepaid amount being refunded & that I could not afford to spend another $300 (cutting into my vacay funds). I was told that was my only option & that I would be refunded in 7-10 business days.

I asked to be transferred to a supervisor & was told “NO, I have already given you all the information you need”. After being declined the option to speak with a supervisor, I knew my situation would not be resolved & this was going nowhere. This company has absolutely no policy on how their representatives speak to their customers & shows no empathy training. This is the most insane experience I’ve ever had with a rental company & this was all before I even picked up my vehicle!!! I will never rent with Hertz again & I’ll make sure everyone I know hears about this TERRIBLE experience.

Hertz will not return your lost items. I left a bag in a car in the Las Vegas Hertz rental car location. I made a claim within two hours of the returned vehicle. Over the course of two weeks, I made several updates to the claim in great detail regarding the bag’s name, brand, and contents. I made at least six calls, and no one from Hertz could provide me with a number to the site location. After three weeks, I was finally able to find a local number, and when you press to speak to a local representative, the system hangs up on you.

I even had two local family members stop by the location to try and retrieve my belongings and was told both times, “normal work hours,” the only person that had access to the lost and found room was not in. I had an air tag in the bag and proceeded to take over ten screenshots of the bag just sitting there at the location. I checked their lost and found page every other day to see if my reference number was posted, and nothing. No one from Hertz contacted me or even responded to my inquiry. Now I see my bag is at a trash facility. So beware: Hertz has one of the poorest customer services I have ever dealt with. The only way you can get someone on the phone is if you are looking to give them money towards a new rental. I rent a lot and am currently a part of their Presidential Circle, but that will change because if this is the way they do business, then I can rent my cars somewhere else.
