Hands down one of the worst car rental experiences I've ever had. Zero professionalism or empathy from the on-site manager, Rick. We reserved a rental car well in advance because we needed reliable transportation to take my family to my mother’s funeral the next morning. This was not a leisure trip and we didn't want a large vehicle for fun - it was a deeply personal, time-sensitive situation that required a 7 passenger vehicle.
When we arrived in town from Hawaii, we were told they did not have the vehicle we rented. Then suddenly they called and said they did but we'd have to wait for them to clean it. Then the story changed and said that this vehicle was actually considered an “upgrade,” and we’d have to pay more per day to take it. Our only other option? Pay out of pocket for an Uber to travel two towns over to another Hertz location to get the class of car we had already reserved. So Hertz failed to provide the vehicle we booked, and that became our financial responsibility to fix. Something that has never happened at any other rental company, hotel, flight or any other reservation I've ever made.
Because we had no choice, and because my family needed transportation for my mother’s funeral, we were essentially forced into paying extra for a vehicle we never asked to upgrade to. When we tried to resolve the issue, Rick repeatedly deflected responsibility, claiming “it’s coming from corporate” and that there was nothing he could do. When I called corporate directly, they said the exact opposite, stating that the decision was up to the location manager.
I've been in upper level management basically my entire adult life. If you’re going to manage a location, you should have the decency to take ownership of problems instead of passing the buck, especially when customers are dealing with something as serious as a funeral. Even in the absence of my specific situation, you shouldn't fail to provide what's already reserved and then push the financial responsibility onto the customer. I will never rent from this location or Hertz again.

Cypress Tx location is a Bait and switch. Use caution. I have had three reservations and each time I show up they don’t have the car. I reserved and want to charge me extra for an upgrade this time. I refused and walked away. It’ll be the last time I ever go there.

I reserved a rental car and when I came to pick it up and hand my Visa debit card to the representative, I was told they cannot accept a Visa debit card even though it can be used as a Visa credit card because Hertz payment system does not recognize that type of card and they don't take checks or cash (at least not the branch I visited). Now inconvenienced, I had to find another car rental place, and the Hertz representative told me how to get to 1 of their competitors. Now that I know their payment system doesn't accept Visa debit cards as legitimate payment, I will permanently avoid them.

I am a gold member with Hertz. I rented a car months in advance for a trip to Florida, knowing it would be busy in Jan/Feb. Went to confirm my rental and found out I had paid 200 more than the current rental - same car, same time frame. When so reached out thinking they would just make an adjustment. I was told they couldn’t and to cancel my rental would be a 100 fee. Very poor customer service. So we cancelled the whole reservation. Lost 100 and booked a car rental with Avis. I am a very disappointed customer.

On December 1, 2025, I pre-paid US$ 919.81 and reserved a mid-size SUV, including any and all fees and taxes, for our planned family vacation in the USA from December 23, 2025 until January 3, 2026. This was done with the aim, since we have small children, to have everything well-arranged upon arrival to avoid surprises, especially because we would arrive in the evening.
Upon arrival on December 23, 2025, we were unpleasantly surprised to find that our reservations had been canceled twice. I had made it clear to the front desk clerk that I hadn't canceled the reservation. The clerk couldn't do anything. I had to immediately make a new reservation by phone. But the same favorable rate couldn't be given. I was told over the phone that the prepayment would be refunded. I had to pay almost US$2,000 for the same mid-size SUV, including any and all fees and taxes, I prepaid.
I immediately sent several emails to find out exactly what had gone wrong and to arrange a refund. A Hertz customer representative confirmed by email on December 26, 2025, that the pre-booking had been canceled due to an error on Hertz's part. By email on December 27, 2025, I was told that I would receive a refund of US$919.81 within ten (10) days, and that since the rental was still ongoing, adjustments could not be processed. An adjustment would only be made when I returned the rental car. I had requested that the same amount as I had paid for the pre-paid reservation be charged. After all, the reservation was not canceled due to my error; it was Hertz that unilaterally canceled the pre-booking.
Based on these emails, I was completely confident and trusted that everything would be fine. So when, after returning the rental car, I was charged US$3,023.62, and the US$919.81 I had paid in early December 2025 was not refunded, but deducted from my final bill, I couldn't believe my eyes. Despite repeated email correspondence, Hertz couldn't resolve this. And the worst part about corresponding with Hertz was that a different representative responded each time, so I had to explain everything completely again. And the icing on the cake, Hertz gave me a US$50.00 discount for their mistake. It's ridiculous.
I have since received the original US$919.81 back from Hertz Aruba. However, I still paid US$1,134.00 too much, taking into account that I paid and reserved and the reservation was unilaterally cancelled by Hertz. I have since requested/demanded Hertz to immediately refund the difference of US$1,134.00. But again no reaction from Hertz.

Hertz claims that if you give them your flight details they will stay open up to 2 hours past closing for delays. My flight was delayed and when I got there not only had they not stayed, according to airport employees they had closed early. Might have been a great experience had I gotten their vehicle I paid for in advance, but I ended up having to pay more than 5 times the amount I had already paid to get one from another company. I am still waiting to see if they refund all of my money or not. Never ever again!

The DTW location charged three additional vehicles on my credit card. Each transaction had a different name attached to it. I contacted Hertz first. The hour wait on hold after getting past the bot. The representative could only locate the car that I actually rented. I explained that three additional cars rentals appeared on my credit card statement. Still the representative could not locate any type of transaction that correlated to the charges in my name or on my account. I reached out to the credit card company where I saw the names on each transaction. My rental had my name attached to it. The additional charges had three different names attached to each transaction. I put in a dispute and called Hertz back. I gave Hertz the information.
Hertz disputed the dispute and refused to refund the charges. Hertz stated that they refunded the credit card. Of course, there was no refund. Remember they could not find any record of any other charges outside of the actual rental. The only reason for renting a vehicle was because the dealership did not have any loaners while my vehicle was being worked on. When we were told on the following day of having an emergency tow to the dealership, which was a Friday, that there would not be any loaners available until the next week (all occurring a week before Christmas). I rented on the 12/18 (Thursday) with a return date of 12/21. After receiving the information about when the loaner would be ready, I tried using the Hertz App to extend rental. Exceptionally odd, I could not extend the rental.
I called Hertz customer service; the bot could not extend and could not give a reason for not being able to be extended. Eventually, they got a live person on the phone, they were not able to extend and/or provide an explanation as to why the extension could not go through. The agent said to bring the car back and I would be charged at that time. On 12/22 my credit card had my held amount on the card three additional times. On 12/23 after returning the car, I asked about the additional holds, but by that time they had a pending credit to cancel out the hold amounts. One week later, I saw that three additional charges were put onto my card. Immediately, I contacted Hertz, which is mentioned above. They could only see the one transaction, which is the same information I could see on the App.
Hertz could not see or validate any additional charges. There was only one rental on the app and the same "one" seen by the representative. When I logged into the credit card account while on hold with the credit card company, I found the charges from Hertz. One had my name on it. The other three had different names and the type of vehicles rented. Ironically, they are rented for the same period of my rental, which was supposed to be 12/18 - 12/21. The rental receipts were all in the names of people who I have not ever met and odd because I was the only person in the lobby of the Hertz rental place when the vehicle was picked up and dropped off. I will not release the names because they may be real people or not.
At this point, I feel violated. I do not want to be presumptuous but that is the reason I could not extend the rental, and my credit card was put on file three different people maybe or maybe not. The entire ordeal is still unclear how my credit card was tied to three additional rentals by three different people. More interesting the bot, phone representative, and myself could only see one rental for my account. Remember, when Hertz disputed, it was stated that credit was issued. Who did not issue the credit to? As mentioned, Hertz could not find any additional charges on the account. How could they refund something that did not exist? Again, if the credit was issued why was it not issued to the credit card that was used to rent the cars for those random people? There were amounts being held three times and credits that adjusted the charges right after each other.
How did these people get my credit card number? (If they are even real people) Another question is: “How was my credit card placed on another person’s rental, three random people?” Hertz could not find any charges tied to my legitimate one vehicle rental. Finding out that these were actual rentals with people’s names on it, makes sense no charges were linked to my account because their rentals were not tied to my account, just tied to my credit card. The entire experience was strange.
It is frightening to know that an emergency that calls for the need to rent a car turned into over $700 worth of charges for three different rentals to random people. At the end of the day. Hertz refused to refund those charges. I am reporting them to the Federal Trades Commission (FTC) for the purpose that an investigation needs to opened violation of consumer rights. What should have been an answer to a problem, became heartache and stressful. Something just don't add up.

I had an extremely disappointing and unsafe rental experience with Hertz last week. I upgraded to an $80/day vehicle and was given a Kia. The following day, while driving on the highway in winter conditions, the rear window began malfunctioning and repeatedly went up and down on its own—even though I hadn’t touched the windows. I called the Halifax location and spoke with the manager, Jamie, who instructed me to drive the vehicle all the way back to Halifax, despite the fact that I was past Middleton, NS (over 1.5 hours away). I was forced to drive for hours on the highway with the rear window fully down in freezing temperatures. The vibration made highway driving unsafe, and the cold exposure was severe despite having the heat on full blast. What should have been a simple fix turned into over four additional hours of unsafe driving, and I ended up getting sick afterward.
When I returned the vehicle, I was initially offered only $30 in compensation, which didn’t even cover fuel costs. After pushing back, this was increased to $100—barely covering the rental for the day and not accounting for gas, lost time, safety risks, or the overall ordeal. The replacement vehicle (a Nissan Rogue) was also disappointing. It had a strong unpleasant odor, inconsistent cruise control, and the exterior was extremely dirty—especially the passenger-side windows, which were so caked with dirt that visibility was affected.
On top of this, the customer service was extremely poor. I was repeatedly placed on hold for over 30 minutes at a time with no explanation. During these long holds, I could hear staff talking in the background. Each time I would say, “Hello, is anyone there?”, someone would suddenly respond and claim the issue had been “resolved,” even though nothing had actually changed. It felt as though action was only taken once I spoke up, and even then, no real resolution was provided—just repeated responses without accountability. Overall, this was a very poor experience involving unsafe vehicle conditions, excessive delays, and inadequate customer service. I expected much better from Hertz and would not recommend this location based on my experience.

I turned the case over to my insurance company for them to fight it out. I also notified my HR team so that Hertz will be removed from our lists of recommended rental car companies. What once was a very good rental car company has become the worst rental car company in the world. I’ve had three botched rentals from the company. I am a president circle member and if they treat PCM’s this way, I’d hate to see how they treat normal customers. Do yourself a huge favor and rent from anyone except Hertz unless you like Chinese and Korean cars that are poorly maintained. My first major complaint was back in November 2025 when I flew to Dallas Fort Worth airport to attend my sister‘s funeral. The incompetence and lack of professionalism at the Dallas Fort Worth airport Hertz location utterly baffles me.
I was 2 1/2 hours at that location trying to get my rental car picked up. That had been reserved well over a week. There was not a single person there who had the knowledge or the willingness to help me and ultimately, I miss my sister‘s funeral. The second complaint, I rented a car in Fort Myers to drive to the Miami airport when halfway through alligator alley, which by the way is in the middle of nowhere, I had a tire blowout on the car I did not run over anything so I feel there was a problem with the tire when I picked up the rental I called their roadside assistance and explain that I had a tire problem and they told me it was gonna be almost 3 hours before they could come repair the flat and it was gonna be at a cost of $238.
I would’ve missed my international flight waiting on them to come fix their Chinese tire on their Korean car a few weeks later, I receive a bill for $200 because I “damaged” their car. I did not get the notice from Hertz that the car was damaged. It came from a third-party. There was no attempt of hertz to contact me with regards to the situation.
The letter from the third-party was very in specific and very vague after about two hours of talking to every non-English speaking, customer service representative at Hertz, I finally got to the bottom of what I was being charged for and low in the hole. It was the charge for their poor quality, Chinese tire blowing out on me and making me late for my international flight. The third complaint that I have is that I rented a “gold class” SUV in Miami after coming home from an international trip. I showed up to pick up my rental car and there was nothing in the gold area except electric Kia Soul shit boxes. I explained to the counter that I did not rent an electric vehicle (I even prepaid for gas), I was told flatly that they were sorry, it’s all that was currently available.
When I inquired about an upgrade, the woman lit up and offered me a $1200 Escalade, expecting me to pay the $1200. Explaining that being a PCM, they are supposed to provide free upgrades when the car you reserved and rented wasn’t available, I was told that’s not how it works. Needless to say, this company is never going to get another dime of my money and I’ll tell anyone who will listen just how bad they suck!

One month after returning my rental car Hertz placed an additional charge on my credit card. I called and spent 45 minutes waiting to speak with someone who told me the charge was for an extra day, then she said it was for tax, then she said it was a surcharge. Because my receipt showed I didn’t stay an extra day, was already charged tax and the contract says nothing about a surcharge Hertz agreed to reverse the charge. However, they should not have arbitrarily without any explanation put a charge on my credit card. Shame on you Hertz!

We booked a car for our holiday in Panama City over Christmas. We have two small children (3 and 11 months) and had a lot of luggage and needed a big car. Despite booking two months in advance, Hertz did not have the car we booked. They offered us a two door car which we physically could not fit in. We had to have a car because we had arranged to meet our family at the beach for a week two hours out of the city. Hertz never produced a car we could use, despite multiple phone calls, promises and my husband going to the lot twice. Their excuse was “it’s a busy time of year.” We booked for the Christmas holiday period, it shouldn’t have been a surprise...
While he was unsuccessfully trying to get the car we had booked, I was struggling with the kids by myself. Hours of my life we won’t get back. In the end we had to get a pickup truck from Alamo and cover our stroller and the rest of our luggage with a tarp. Utterly dysfunctional and disgusting service. Imagine turning up at your hotel and them just not having the room and their excuse being “meh, it’s a busy time.” Utterly pathetic.

If I could leave less than 1 star I would. I was forced to pay $500 cash as a deposit at Hertz in San Diego because I didn’t have a credit card, apparently that’s the penalty. The woman was rude and unkind. I returned the car in perfect condition 5 weeks later That was 3 months ago. I still have not received my bond refund. Hertz have assured me they have located my $500 bond deposit and have confirmed this via email (about 20 back and forward emails) always a different person. So to date I’ve been told the money has been sent to an Australian bank account, which I have no authority for and the said Australian bank account has no record.
I have been told by numerous customer service agents they can’t find my deposit. I have been told by others that they apologize and my deposit has definitely been located. I have asked if I can be returned the funds owed in cash, seeing as I was forced to pay cash in the first place. I have also given my American Bank account for the funds to be deposited in there.
Hertz have literally stolen $500 from me which is as stated unlawful and obviously theft. I am disgusted and shocked by a well known company as Hertz, that this has been allowed to progress with no result for so long. Never never will I trust Hertz or an Affiliate of Hertz again. Australians or international travelers beware, have a credit card so this doesn’t happen to you. I’m actually concerned the customer service woman may have stolen this money.

I strongly urge you... do not rent from Hertz Car Rental. They are a crooked company. I recently rented a vehicle from them while visiting Colorado. I chose not to buy their insurance, due to having my own private coverage. Upon returning the vehicle, I walked around the car to make sure the car was in the same condition I rented it in. It was perfect. Three weeks after returning the vehicle, I received a bill from Hertz for over $500 telling me there was damage to the windshield. They submitted a picture where it appears a small rock chipped the windshield. We submitted an appeal, which was completely ignored. We submitted a claim to our insurance company, and paid our $250 deductible. Our insurance company paid the balance of the damage amount, but Hertz also charges an administrative fee of $85.21. There's no justifiable reason for an "administrative fee", not to mention charging $511.28 to "fix" a windshield.

Have been a loyal Hertz customer for years and have rented from numerous locations without issue. However, my recent experience at the Florence, SC location (Second Loop) was extremely frustrating and concerning. I returned the car as instructed, only for it to be stolen shortly after. Despite this, I was charged for a missing key and a $830 towing fee from Dillon, SC, where the car was left. On top of that, the manager falsely stated to the police that they didn’t know if I had returned the car, and no cameras were working to verify the situation. I was there to correct him in front of the cops, but he still lied and created a dangerous situation for me with the Florence police.
I am deeply disappointed by how the situation was handled. Not only was I charged unfairly, but the manager’s actions made me feel unsafe, and I was left with no way to properly defend myself. I’ve rented many cars from Hertz in the past, but after this experience, I’ll be taking my business elsewhere. I hope this review helps others avoid the stress I went through. Be cautious when renting from this location, as their customer service and handling of issues leave much to be desired.

I am a longtime, very loyal Hertz customer and a President's Circle member, which makes this experience especially disappointing. When my husband and I arrived to pick up our rental, there was only one car available in the entire lot—an EV. We were told it was the only vehicle Hertz had left, leaving us with no real choice. The situation quickly became unsafe. The vehicle had a defective headlight and was nearly out of battery at pickup. While trying to reach my in-laws’ house late at night, the car ran out of battery, and driving in the dark with a malfunctioning headlight was genuinely frightening. We were stranded and had to Uber to our destination, then return the next day just to retrieve the vehicle and find a place to charge it. Even then, it took 12 hours to charge and only reached about 150 miles of range, which is completely impractical.
This experience was inconvenient, stressful, and unsafe—and it’s not what I expect from Hertz, especially as a top-tier loyalty member. There was no proactive communication, no alternative offered, and no acknowledgment of how serious this situation was. Hertz needs to do better when it comes to vehicle readiness, EV transparency, and taking care of loyal customers.

I arrived at Orlando International Airport at 11:30 PM. I went down to pick up my prepaid rental car and got in line at around 12:00 AM. The line was 100 people deep. There was one person at the counter. For almost 2 hours, we were given no information. Finally, when a supervisor showed up, we were first told that if we recorded him, he would not speak to us. When the man that was directed to said, "I won’t record", the manager said, "Sure you’re still anyway". Very rude after keeping everyone waiting with no communication. He went on to tell us that they ran out of cars, there was nothing they could do to help us, and to leave. Our options were to hang around the airport, and hope a car came in the next day, or find an alternative mode of transportation. They would not assist us with getting a refund for our prepaid cars. They told us to call customer service the next day. They would not help anymore and to now leave.
Every time I attempted to contact Hertz, I was told to deal directly with the rental counter at my pick up location by a computer. They refused to help and insisted we call customer service the next day. When I called customer service, which even getting through to a human was incredibly difficult, and told them what happened, they wanted to send me to another place to pick up a car or charge me a cancellation fee. I rented the car to drive home from the airport. I was already home having had to pay surge charging for Lyft. So then they wanted to charge me the full price I paid for canceling the reservation, but I did not cancel the, they failed to provide the service that I paid for.
After going round and round with the representative trying to get them to understand that I did not cancel, they overbooked, I was put on hold so they go find somebody to help. I’m supposed to get a refund now within 7 to 10 business days they say. I will be paying attention and if I don’t get that refund, I will be filing a fraud charge with my credit card company for failure to provided the service paid for and contacting the Better Business Bureau. I will give my credit card company a heads up about it so they can also watch for the refund.
I finally get home close to 3 o’clock in the morning and I pull up social media and the very first thing that comes up was Jason ** at a Hertz rental at another location where he had the same issue. They ran out of cars and they had to find another way to get home. No customer support given. I travel a lot and understand there are hiccups, especially around the holidays, but this was more than that. They didn’t overbook by one or two people, in one location, they overbooked by hundreds in multiple locations and did nothing to support their customers at that time.
I have never had a company where there was an issue, not help in that moment, and keep customers informed of what is going on. They waited nearly 2 hours to tell us there were no cars. It took them two hours to realize they had no cars? They couldn’t help with refunds? They couldn’t help find cars at other locations close by and either get cars brought over or shuttle people there or something, anything to provide customer service? Every time I tried to call customer service I was told I had to go and directly work with the counter agent at my pick up location. My counter agent refused to help and said, "Call customer service. We can’t do anything".
I have never rented with Hertz before, and I will never rent from Hertz again. This was my third rental car experience during, and I had no issue with the two other companies I rented from. What an unmitigated disaster caused by either greed or a very poorly run company. I don’t care how good the price appears, just don’t rent from Hertz. Pay a little more for a better company, better service, and getting the product you paid for.

We had a car booked about a month prior to our trip at YUMA Airport, at the time of pick up I was told they didn't have a car available for me and nothing they could due because some cars were getting oil changes. I received email day before confirming my upcoming rental. This left me stranded and added unexpected expenses to my trip. BEWARE even if you pre-book that doesn't mean a car will be available for you. The inconvenience and extra expensive are yours to suck up. Hertz has no customer service or consideration for travelers rental needs, do yourself favor use other rental companies that will honor the booking.

Two major complaints. One you select a vehicle including time and place of pickup, but the vehicle isn’t ready and you’re forced into an upgrade. It’s happened more than once. Secondly on a recent trip to Mass to bury my sister on the way the right rear tire exploded and we were lucky to get off the highway safely. By the time we found help the tire couldn’t be plugged. It was shredded and the donut was put on but not with enough time to make the burial. We slowly made it back to Logan airport where customer service added an additional 300.00 to our bill. Zero empathy for missing the funeral and no patience to hear the vehicle didn’t strike anything in the road. Hertz corporate no better no offer to mediate the dispute etc. never again will I rent from Hertz. Receipt attached before the cost of the tire was added.

The policy of providing a credit card by the renter is understood. But if the renter does not have one why can’t they accept a spouse card since that is the card used to pay for the car? The other issue that prevents the renter from using their debit card is the requirement of using it one day in advance. Why can’t you just get approval for the anticipated charges and refund any unused portion? This is a money pit. Charging $60 for a second driver when there is none but have to do so to use their credit card.

They sent me an invoice for supposed damages that I definitely didn't do. I took a video of the vehicle when we pick it up and sure enough - the damage was already there but I didn't notice it at the time. I am a very unsatisfied customer of Hertz! I had to cancel my car rental that I paid upfront for when the government shutdown was in full effect. My flight was cancelled and therefore I did not need the car rental. After finally reaching customer service for a real conversation about my refund, I was told I should receive it (the refund) within 7-10 days. And getting that verbal commitment was after the customer service kept trying to bounce back to the third-party rental company. That company had already informed me that Hertz had the money since I paid up front. We are at the end of this month and no refund. I am extremely disappointed as we are in tough economic times, as EVERY knows. I don’t have money to throw away.
I am disappointed that I am being punished and overlooked for something I could not control. I simply want my refund since I did NOT use the car rental service. It took Hertz all of 3 seconds flat to take my money and they were happy to do so, but me getting a refund seems to be an issue in their accounting department. I will let everyone I know and can tell that this is a horrible company for customer service and that they lie to their customers. Again, disappointed and will not be using this company again.

Absolutely under no circumstances rent from these thieves. I rented a car in Orlando. Upon returning the car there was some photo captions taken (no person available) of the vehicle. There was a smudge spotted by one picture on the rear bumper. I believe it to be a mark left by a wheel on my suitcase or something that could be wiped off with a shirt sleeve or towel. Hertz sent me a bill for $100 for vehicle damage. This is what I believe to be extortion and a money grabbing scheme by Hertz as I am not there to dispute what was exactly on the bumper. Make sure you take 1000 pictures of your vehicle before and after returning the vehicle and take it through a car wash so you don't get a dirty vehicle charge or some **!

I recently rented from Hertz at Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) through my AMEX partnership, and this was by far the worst car rental experience I’ve ever had. The problems started right away. Hertz sent a text saying I could “skip the counter” and go directly to the “Gold Board.” After walking around the airport parking lot for nearly 20 minutes, I discovered the Gold Board is actually inside the office, totally misleading communication.
When I finally checked in, the representative assigned me a car, but after I unpacked and settled in, I was told it was the wrong vehicle. Instead of simply transferring the rental, they made me unpack and repack everything into another identical car. That unnecessary process caused me to accidentally leave important personal items behind in the first vehicle.
What happened next was unbelievable. I called over ten times, left multiple voicemails, sent emails and texts, and for more than two weeks, no one from Hertz ever called me back. When the operations manager finally did reach out, she was dismissive, and offered no solutions or genuine apology. She said that if my items weren’t found within 30 days, they would just be discarded, and she made no effort to even check if they had already been located.
To make matters worse, the second vehicle I was given had a front tire reading 53 PSI (while the others were at 70) and was visibly leaking air. By the time I returned it, the tire was down to 48 PSI, a safety concern. I had also prepaid for a full tank of gas, but the car was handed to me with only a quarter tank, and no one corrected it.
I later found two items on Hertz’s Lost and Found portal that exactly match the description of my missing belongings, yet no one has contacted me to confirm. The complete lack of communication, professionalism, and accountability from Hertz has been shocking. After this experience, I’ll never rent from Hertz again. Enterprise has always provided consistent, courteous, and reliable service; Hertz has proven to be the exact opposite.

I'd suggest you reconsider if you haven't already reserved a vehicle. If you do rent from them, my advice would be to consider acquiring their extra insurance endorsement. Our family left a Hertz rental vehicle at the Colorado Springs Airport rental lot early on the morning of September 29th. As has been our custom, our son took a slow walk around the Ford Expedition to identify any issues that should be reported; everything looked good to go. Three weeks later, I received a call from a Hertz representative demanding $800 for alleged car damage and over $400 in administrative fees. Talk about out of the blue.
Despite them completely blowing the chain of custody standards for the industry, they held by their position that I was responsible. Initially, the photos they shared only showed a "dot" of damage, but I later learned that additional photos were attached to the message. While none contained timestamping, they did show that damage had been done to the Expedition's trunk emblem. That struck me as odd, so I investigated whether the area had seen other reports of vandalism. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done. I ended up filing a police report with the Colorado Springs Police Department at the suggestion of a department employee. Meanwhile, I haven't decided which way to go on this. If you want to avoid a headache, though, I would suggest steering clear of Hertz.

When I returned the vehicle, they showed me the scratch and charged me over $600 (I guarantee you that vehicle never got that scratch fixed). I know that I was ultra careful with the car so I went to the video I had made and could see the scratch truly did exist. I sent Hertz the video and a screenshot but they said I manipulated the video.... They always had a reason not to reimburse me my money. I have the original video but I cannot send it in its full extent because of email restrictions on size of the video.
This is a MAJOR loophole that they use to charge cheap for a car then cash in with defects. Either they are renting vehicles without inspecting them OR they are deliberately not documenting the scratch so they always find someone to charge extra. Worst part is that I am in the states and I have to deal with this matter from another country. It's a legitimate scam and I would love to see if there is a class action lawsuit against them or if there is a way to disclose their records to see how many times they have charged people for the same wheel. I am beyond upset and this is after a full month of trying to cool down from this matter.

Person picking up vehicle did not have a credit card so therefore we had to cancel rental. Charged us $200 to cancel a pre-paid rental which is 85+% of the total rental charges. Total BS. ZERO STARS would be actual score.

Absolutely do not recommend. I rented a vehicle two months ago and received a payment receipt upon returning the car. Two months later, I am being told I am sent to collections for a past due payment. I have tried physically going into the store I rented from, which says they cannot process a payment for a closed rental agreement. I have called their billing support number three times now, and their systems are literally down each time I call, which says a lot about their reliability as a company. I am at my wits' end with this situation and cannot believe they make it so hard to process a simple payment. Do better!

The chat support person told me that they could not access my rental file or issue a refund. I find it hard to believe rental records are not retained for some period. FYI rental # was **. Today I went to Hertz at the Metropolitan Airport and had a horrible experience. The vehicle that I was in had a maintenance light on and I had it reserved for 14 days and it was only day 7, I called ahead to advise them I wanted to make a swap of vehicles due to the warning on the dash board. The phone direct line never was able to direct my call to any of the representatives there. Upon my arrival I parked in the return area and Advised the representative that walked up with her iPad that I was here to switch out my vehicles because this vehicle needed oil change services. She said Ok. I entered the building and I advised the women at the desk. When It was my turn the same exact thing. I am here to exchange my vehicle because of a maintenance warning signal.
She stated, "Oops the person outside must have ended your reservation." I don't see it at all, what car was it?", I explained to her I was not here to end the reservation. Only to swap out for a different vehicle seeing that I travel in this rental vehicle over 900 miles per week and I want it to be as safe as possible running 100% properly with no malfunctions. The Representative said, "One moment I have to get management to reopen your reservation, but I'm also sold out of all cars for today so this may be your only vehicle." I found that odd and hard to believe seeing that cars are returned 24/7 at an airport and I was already inconvenienced traveling back to the airport on a random Saturday due to a maintenance issue. I then sat down and waited for the manager, when the manager approached me he stated, the vehicle you are in is not having a maintenance change oil issue that is just a prompt that car sends a message about.
I advised him well, Now that I am here this vehicle is not the size I ever wanted from the initial pick up day and I would like to still swap for a different vehicle. He immediately declined that very rudely explaining to me, that, that's not an option at all today and He can open my reservation back up for the same vehicle and that is all. I then Became dissatisfied with the customer service Because the Original Rep Jazzlyn was speaking at the same time that he was stating that she already told me that once. This was absolutely poor customer service and, waste of my time driving to the airport. My original reservation being closed was a big mistake on their end and I was never properly informed of how the process works of changing out my vehicle at the airport. As a Long time customer The service was not top tier at all, and 100% unacceptable.
Jazzlyn did not offer to swap out my vehicle or give me any options of other choices of vehicles the we're being returned to be cleaned. The customer service was now completely at zero with nothing else to discuss. This turned my day over to be completely unhappy and not productive at all seeing that I have to travel again in this vehicle they advised that did not have a maintenance issue. As a Gold member This was by far the worst experience ever; I have never been in such a setting of back and forth with customer service or agents ever.
Jazzlyn then became frustrated and refused to help assistance Luke the Manager in reopening my Reservation and we had to move to a different area with someone else to help assist with this, The women that assisted Dana helped with no problem, opened the reservation and advised me to Go pick out any car on the Gold Member tier area, I was lied to, and informed many confused responses along with poor disposition for no reason, today was horrible for me at Hertz Rental DTW and I wouldn't recommend anyone to rent directly from that location ever.

Due to the prepay option, I would not be refunded for the extra day. I tried contacting customer service to either take off the extra day or to cancel and rebook. The first rep I spoke with was not very nice and told me there’s nothing he could do and I would just have to return it early and hope that the shop would refund me.
When I tried to explain that the policy told me that I wouldn’t be refunded due to prepaying he repeated that he could not help me and then ended the chat. The second rep I got was even ruder than the first and had a nasty attitude the whole time. I rented a vehicle from Hertz and had one of the worst billing experiences I’ve ever encountered. I was double charged for a week I had already paid for (August 7–14), then billed again even after Hertz had already taken the vehicle back on the agreed return date of August 19 — a date that was set through Hertz’s own system, which I documented with screenshots.
When I raised the issue, every customer service response ignored the duplicate and post-return charges. Instead, they repeatedly sent me boilerplate about “the most economical rate at time of return,” which had nothing to do with my actual concern. I was never late, never kept the car beyond the return date, and yet was charged as if I had. I’ve provided billing history, bank statements, payment proofs and they continue to refuse to correct the double billing.
This has felt deceptive and dismissive. I’m now forced to escalate this to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Better Business Bureau to recover money I should never have been charged. Consumers should be very cautious — document everything, because Hertz’s billing and customer service practices have proven unreliable and evasive.

I have been charged for a damage that I did not cause and required to pay $2,724.92 for repair which has not been performed. I rented a 2025 Toyota Camry on May 16, 2025 at Hertz Rogue Valley International Airport in Medford, OR. This car rental is operated by Overland West, Inc., a Hertz licensee owner. I returned the car in the same condition as I received it 5 days and 95 miles later on May 21, 2025. Overland West has never contacted me directly. Instead, Carol **, the manager, filed a damage report and forwarded it to PurCo, a collection agency and asked them to collect. The claim is based on a carbon copy of a handwritten inspection report showing no damage at the time of rental and a photograph showing damage at the undercarriage presumably of the same car.
There are no detailed before and after rental vehicle condition reports containing photographic evidence and signatures to be able to compare. I requested, but did not receive, the inspection report they prepared after this car was returned by the renter prior me. Instead, they are using a faint carbon copy of an outdated Form# 173 with a simple diagram on it showing only the top view of a car for before condition, and a photograph for after condition to prove that the damage occurred during my rental period.
This carbon copy of Form# 173 differs from the original in that it does not show any damage and the damage marking explanations are crossed out. See Copy of Form# 173.jpg attached. When I presented a time and location-stamped photograph of the original taken immediately after I signed it in front of the person who completed it, (see The original Form#173 attached), the claim specialist at PurCo did not dare to suggest that the pre-existing damage markings shown on the original were added after the facts.
I have never seen the damage in dispute in spite of inspecting and photographing the car both before and after rental. The photograph provided by Hertz, which has no time and location stamp on it, shows old damages of the plastic cover located in the undercarriage. (see Picture of the damage) Just like my own video of the same location, (see A frame from my video attached) does not show the damage of the front bumper. Undercarriage damages cannot be seen unless you bend down and look under the vehicle.
The Accident/Damage report by Carol **, (see Damage Report by Carol ** attached) the manager at Medford, states that the damage in question was reported by “Austin (USA)” not in Medford, Oregon, where I rented and returned the car. The damage report by “Austin (USA)” has not been included in the claim. The cost of repair was estimated by a third party, the Rough Auto Body LLC, at odometer reading of 8,445. The car was rented to me at 18,471 miles.
In spite of these findings, the claim has not been dropped. PurCo requests me to pay a total of $2,724.92. $1,637.23 for physical damage, $787.69 for loss of use and $300 administration of the claim in spite of the fact that the repair of this damage as of 7/9/2025, according to Rough Auto Body LLC, has not been completed. Not repairing a hidden undercarriage damage of a rental car can cause financial damage and emotional distress to future unsuspecting renters or buyer.

I called and tried to speak to a Hertz representative who transferred my call because he couldn't speak English. After 12 minutes in hold they hung up. I found a local Hertz place in Nuremberg and went to fix the problem. The car wouldn't lock and in order to start you had to hold the key on the side of the ignition. The clerk changed the battery but that didn't fix problem. Another clerk came to help an hour later while we were waiting and reading the manual to find solutions. She tried for 40 minutes to no avail. I asked for another car and clerk stated she didn't have any. She asked me to call Hertz again on my dime international rates apply. I refused and she finally made the call and told me they would call me back.
We left the shop and I received a call hours later asking me if I wanted to switch for an electric car which wasn't what I wanted or had paid for. Finally the key fob reset and was working. The hours I wasted trying to fix the problem I lost a paid tour of a museum. We returned the car at Munich and parked it at the car return area without anyone to receive it. I had filled up the car with gasoline at $105 euros hours earlier. I received a final bill days later charging me $105 dollars for gas as I had returned car on empty. After crossing one toll bridge in the high occupancy vehicle lane (which should have been free given the number of people in the car), Hertz billed me $18 after my return for the bridge toll & “convenience fee”. Even more ridiculous though was the $400 cleaning fee they charged me after the rental return for a small amount of dog hair that could be easily vacuumed or removed with a lint roller! Bottom line- long after you return the car expect to continue to get exorbitant bills for unjustified fees.

I will never use Hertz or any of their affiliated rental companies (Dollar, Thrifty, Firefly) ever again. The company canceled my reservation and did not notify me. I found out when I attempted to confirm my reservation on the website the night before. I prepaid for the vehicle and the charges were still on my account when I attempted to confirm. I called the customer service number and was notified that my reservation was canceled by the location due to no vehicles being available. I was told I would be refunded in 7-10 business days.
When I expressed that I needed a vehicle for the date of my previous reservation, they offered to make a new reservation at another location but the rate would be more than what I previously paid. I was expected to pay the full amount even though my previous payment (which was canceled without my consent or knowledge) was still not refunded to my account. When I asked if my previous payment could be applied to the new reservation, I was told that their rates change all the time and I would need to pay the full amount. I asked to make a complaint and was told to write an email. I asked to make a verbal complaint and was told the supervisor would give me the same information. I had reason to contact Hertz customer service to resolve a billing issue where I paid for a certain class of car but was given one that was a lower, less expensive class than what I had paid for. I am retired, but use to travel extensively and always considered Hertz as the leader in the car rental industry, setting the gold standard for reliability, the quality of its fleet and customer service. Based on my this most recent rental, I learned that the Hertz I once knew no longer exists. When I tried to call Hertz customer service to resolve my billing issue, it didn't take me long to realize that the customer service at Hertz is almost non-existent. After searching its website for Hertz customer service number, I realized that the number is no longer provided. Instead those seeking customer service are advised to submit their issue using an online form. Hertz commits to respond to the issue raised via email within 3 to 5 business days.
Going through that system is totally unworkable. Once you receive a response, if you have any disagreement, need to provide or obtain more clarity, have questions about their response, or have any other need for further discussion as one might normally have when working through an issue, you have to put it in writing and resubmit . Then it will be another 3 to 5 business days to obtain a response, which I found was always provided by a different customer service representative, so there is no continuity. So under this system, just to have the most rudimentary conversation with Hertz customer service, could take literally weeks to complete.
With respect to my issue, Hertz refused to refund the difference between the cost in the rental car I was provided and the cost I had paid, which blows my mind. They instead provided me 900 points under their Gold Member Loyalty program, which doesn't get you anything. Under Hertz new loyalty program rules, all of your loyalty points are taken from you anyway if you go longer than a year without renting a car from them. Hertz. Since I have no desire to rent from Hertz again, the points they provided me are totally worthless. It took me about three weeks of going back and forth with Hertz customer service under their customer service system to reach the 900 points "resolution". I didn't have the time and energy go any longer.
For me, it really isn't an issue about the money, its more of an issue of integrity and doing what's right. My experience has taught me that unlike the Hertz of the past the "new" Hertz has no integrity. I am not familiar with all the dynamics of operating a rental car company, but I do know that if you don't treat your customers with respect, you're dead. Hertz' horrendous customer service system demonstrates they have no respect for their customers. To me, Hertz is like a ghost, just a shadow of the company that it once was. Like a ghost, the company is dead. It just doesn't know it. My advice to Hertz is therefore very simple: "You are no longer of this world. Go to the light. You're dead. Go to the light." - RIP

⭐☆☆☆☆ UNACCEPTABLE & UNPROFESSIONAL – DO NOT TRUST HERTZ. I am absolutely outraged by the blatant disregard for customer service and professionalism shown by Hertz. I made a passenger van reservation nearly FOUR MONTHS in advance — plenty of time for them to prepare and guarantee the vehicle I needed.
Less than 24 hours before my scheduled pick-up, after the local branch had already closed for the day, I received a last-minute cancellation. No explanation. No apology. No effort to provide a backup plan. Just a call — far too late to actually resolve anything. I immediately contacted Hertz customer service, waited on hold for almost 25 minutes, and then stayed on the phone for over an hour only to be told that not a single passenger van or comparable SUV was available in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio — or even the entire state of Louisiana.
Let that sink in: After four months of holding my reservation, Hertz failed me with zero notice, zero accountability, and zero options across multiple states. This wasn’t just an inconvenience — it was a complete disruption of carefully made plans. It cost me time, money, and enormous stress to scramble and find a replacement vehicle at the last minute. I planned my entire trip around this rental, and Hertz’s careless approach threw everything into chaos.
If a company can’t honor reservations made months in advance, they have no business taking reservations at all. Trust and reliability are everything in this industry — and Hertz has proven they offer neither. Avoid Hertz at all costs. Especially if your plans, your event, or your peace of mind depend on them coming through. Because they won’t.

When we landed they charged my card $300 for a deposit, which was more than the cost of the rental itself. They told me that I would be charged $100 and that the other $200 would be refunded. After arguing with them I decided, "Ok it's just $25" and left with my family. A week after returning home I received an email, "which I was expecting because I had toll fees and was waiting for a receipt". The email showed a total charged to my card for $68.76. The toll fees were $28.80 and the balance of $39.96 were the fees that Hertz charged me as a "convenience fee".
I have had rentals before and none of which have charged me this way for more than the actual tolls. I will not be renting from them in the future. For those who are unaware check with the rental company for policies. They had also tried to charge me a fee of $13 a day to prepay for tolls. I declined because we didn't drive the vehicle every day. We only drove the vehicle from the airport to a hotel on Sunday then went to our hotel at Disney on Monday. We didn't drive the vehicle again until Friday when we left Disney and checked into our hotel at Universal Studios. And then from there to the airport on Sunday. In the past, when I traveled for work, I used Hertz religiously. They had the nicest cars, and the best customer service. Recently, I rented a vehicle in Sydney to drive to Perth. When I made the reservation, I indicated that it was a one-way rental, the price seemed fair, and the pick-up location was very convenient. However, when I received my credit card statement, there was a random charge for a rental in Oklahoma. I went on my profile, and there was no receipt for this charge. I did, however, have a receipt for the rental in Sydney. The $640+ charge for Oklahoma was not shown as a credit on this bill. It did show a One-Way Rental charge for $1,300 (I figured that was the charge for the actual rental.)
When I called Hertz. I was told that it was a pre-payment charge and the $1,300 charge was for renting one-way. Now, in the past, the daily rate for a one-way rental was more expensive (obviously), and this was the case when I booked in Sydney. There was no mention of a $1,300 one-way fee. Customer service told me that I could not get a receipt for the $640.00 charge, and that it was what it was. The agent was condescending and rude.
This is the second time Hertz has charged me more than contracted. Once, in Belgium, I rented a car for one day and was told the daily rate was around $200.00. When I received my bill upon returning, It was almost $900.00. They charged for mileage, but never mentioned they were going to do so. Basically, if you want to be subject to the ole bait and switch, rent from Hertz. But I would steer clear of them. They have gone downhill and are now just horrible.

When I arrived at the location at 228 E Blackstock Rd in Spartanburg, later on, I found a note on the door stating the representative would return in 15 minutes. Once the representative arrived, he informed me there were no vehicles available. He asked if I had made the reservation earlier that day, and I confirmed that I had.
This experience was extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, it reflects an ongoing issue with Hertz—accepting reservations without having vehicles available. Despite being aware of this reputation, I chose to give Hertz another chance, only to be disappointed once again. I am very dissatisfied with the lack of reliability and poor inventory management. I would not recommend renting from Hertz, as you risk being left without a vehicle, even with a confirmed reservation.

I booked a Renault Captur automatic car (I signed a contract) at the price of 500 euros per month and 1 week before they told me that the person who made the reservation no longer works and that he gave me the wrong price (off season) and that the price if I want the car is 1000 euros per month, double the initial price. I calculated the price displayed on the site at the moment for the same car group M and it is 18.5 Euros/day so 555 euros per month, the prices on the site were the same when I made the reservation.

I am 100% sure there was no damage when I returned the vehicle, yet they filed an accident report 3 DAYS after I returned the vehicle. I will never use Hertz again and recommend you take a video of the car upon return to prevent more fraud from their employees.

They were overpriced for a van, however, I need it to move a lot of luggage from the airport. When I returned it they were closed so had to drop off the paperwork and keys inside the airport later that day in another city. They claimed it was damaged the next morning. This could not happened while I had it and they adhered to them being right and sending harassing emails and letters. I will never rent from them or any of their other car rental companies. Having to pay for something that was not done while I had it is very unfair.

Review for The Guy Sale Rep – 1551 Cobb Pkwy, Marietta, GA 30069. I had a very disappointing experience here. The customer service was unprofessional and downright rude. The staff member I interacted with seemed to carry a personal bias, treating me with unnecessary attitude and dismissiveness. It felt like I was being judged simply for not fitting a certain mold, which is completely inappropriate in any business setting. No one should feel uncomfortable or disrespected just for walking through the door. I won’t be returning, and I can’t recommend this place to others. Respect should be the standard, not the exception.

My recent experience with Hertz was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. The first representative I spoke to was unhelpful and condescending. She informed me that a $500 deposit was required to use a debit card—an amount I found excessive compared to the usual $200–$250. When I asked for alternative solutions, she offered none and simply suggested I cancel the reservation, knowing full well Priceline had a strict no-refund policy. This left me scrambling at the last minute to come up with a $500 deposit I hadn’t budgeted for.
After getting nowhere, I tried another rental car company and called Priceline, only to be told I would lose my $300+ if I canceled. My group and I managed to come up with a workaround using a friend’s credit card for the deposit, but Hertz wouldn't allow it since the reservation wasn’t in her name. They also wouldn’t let me switch the reservation or pay with cash—who doesn’t accept cash?
Feeling out of options, I reluctantly decided to use the $500 I had set aside for vacation expenses. I avoided the original representative due to her poor attitude and instead spoke with DJ, who was professional, patient, and helpful. He handled everything efficiently—honestly, someone of his caliber doesn’t belong at a company with such poor service overall.
To top it all off, I was charged an extra $30 for just two gallons of gas—something no one mentioned beforehand. If I’d known, I would’ve filled the tank myself. This experience was exhausting, expensive, and not how anyone should start a vacation. I’ll be sharing this review across platforms in hopes of warning others. I’ve had issues with other companies before, but Hertz has now earned the top spot on my “never again” list.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! The car I was initially assigned couldn't be found, which caused a huge backup at the checkout line as they attempted to straighten out the paperwork. Then, the car I did have essentially went into limp mode my last full day. Given my blinkers didn't even work, it shouldn't even have been operated. Instead of towing, I was merely given the option to drive it in for a replacement. But given the major electrical malfunction, the gauges didn't work. So when I did turn it in, I was falsely charged for a lack of fuel, even though I provided a receipt showing I had filled it up immediately prior to turn in. Despite advertisements of contact within 2-3 business days, I heard NOTHING. There was no way to speak to an actual human. This "simple" incorrect charge took over a month to resolve (still working). I have never been treated so bad in my 46 years. From moment I walked in to Hertz there was undertone of unfriendliness. I rented a vehicle from this company because my car was in an accident and I was already in a stressful situation. The rep kept trying to force me to buy the additional insurance. I explained I had car insurance and did not have an additional $60 a day for the duration of the rental. I got the vehicle, drove it home on a Friday, did not drive it again until Tuesday, ran a few errands and the tire went flat. We put on the spare and I called the office the next day to find out what to do. I was met with a gentleman telling me to call roadside assistance. I explained we had already put the spare on and all I needed was how to move forward. He was yelling at me telling me to figure it out and I needed to replace their tire and it was my problem to figure out. I could not get a word in.
I left the call so upset and called my dad trying to figure out what to do because I did not have any more money to buy a new tire for a rental car and was still so upset by the way I was treated. I broke down crying on the phone with my dad. This of course upset him. We took the tire to a tire expert and was advised the issue with the tire was a tire defect. I did not cause the issue. He let us record him showing the issue. We went to the Hertz office to resolve the issue with the tire and as soon as we walked in the rep said, "What do you need?" with a nasty attitude. My dad starts to explain and the rep cuts him off and says he does care, we need to pay to fix the tire.
At this point my dad does begin to argue with the rep because he is being extremely rude. He will not hear anything we have to say. He was so disrespectful and mean. We were not getting anywhere. We turned in the car and left. I have reached out to the corporate office and am waiting to hear back. No matter the situation or company rules that rep had no right to treat us that way and it does make we wonder if it's racially motivated. In this day and age I hope it's not. But none of that matters. No customer should ever be treated like that. Most traumatic experience of my life.

I had a clean, comfortable, reliable car from Hertz. But our counter agent left something to be desired. He had a heavy handed approach to selling their insurance, which corrected on more than one occasion and called it a “waiver”. He is isn’t an insurance agent and shouldn’t act like one. Especially after a long flight and customers just want to drive to their destinations and check in. I’m fully insured on rental cars in my home state, which travels with me in all 50 states and territories. Plus I have an extra $1,000,000 umbrella policy.
The next complaint is about PlatePass. Unless you plan to drive through an obscene amount of tolls on a daily basis, don’t spend the $17.50 a day for unlimited tolls. Just drive through the “cash pay” lane and pay any from $1.25 to &1.75 per toll. Our counter agent gave us false and misleading advice and told us to just drive through the tolls, without PlatePass, and they would bill the credit card on file according to our license plate. The mistake cost us $199.00 for two tolls as opposed to $3.00 on the way back to the airport by driving through the “cash pay” lanes.

I normally don’t leave reviews, but the level of dishonesty and poor service I experienced with Hertz warrants a warning to others. After my car was totaled, I rented a vehicle from Hertz. I initially booked it for one week, but due to ongoing circumstances, I needed to extend the rental. When I spoke to an agent at the pickup location, I specifically asked whether I would still be charged for the full extension if I returned the car early. I was clearly told no—that I would only be charged for the days the vehicle was actually used.
Based on that assurance, I returned the car two days early. Yet, I was still charged for the full extended rental period. I contacted customer service and was told they would adjust the charges and send a new receipt. Two days passed with no update. I followed up, only to be informed that the case had been closed and the full charges were deemed valid. I disputed this again and was told a new case would be created and a supervisor would contact me. No one ever reached out.
I then used the app to speak with a live agent, provided the case number, and explained everything again. The response? The agent stated the case was closed—and abruptly ended the chat. On top of being charged for days I didn’t use the car, I was also charged $80 simply for returning the vehicle to a different location—because the original drop-off location was closed. On the receipt you can see they charged service charge $70 plus $10 return change fee. When I asked what the $70 was for they said because I changed the location of the drop off. I had no choice but to return it elsewhere.
This experience has been frustrating, dishonest, and completely unprofessional. It’s infuriating to know that after I returned the car early, Hertz likely re-rented it, meaning they profited twice off the same vehicle. I will never rent from Hertz again, and I strongly advise others to beware of hidden fees, misleading information, and poor customer service.

We had a vehicle reservation on the 16th and our flight was late 2 hours. At 1 am on the 17th we checked in with Hertz to pick up the vehicle but there was none due to the public transportation strike. Too many people were waiting to get their rentals. The staff were so friendly and were trying to make ends meet. Finally at 3 am they were able to give us a vehicle. We were so glad to get the vehicle that we didn't even care about the weird smell in it.
Today May 19, 2025, my Hertz rental broke in the middle of New York at the intersection of Madison Ave and 57th. I called Hertz for roadside assistance at 5:30 pm and now at 8:52 pm I am still in the middle of the road hoping the tow truck will get here before 9:30 pm. Now the battery is dead, and the flashers aren't working anymore. When I asked Hertz if I could leave the vehicle because my husband was a sick man and needed to get to our destination so he could rest, the answer was I would be responsible if the police impounded the car.
When I asked them to provide me a ride to my son's apartment tonight and a ride to Laguardia Airport tomorrow morning because I can't go to the airport to pick up another vehicle tonight, the response was they could provide me only one ride. Both rides are less than 15 minutes. For Hertz it's fine that I wait on their stalled vehicle in the middle of the road for over 5 hours so it won't get impounded, but they can not afford to provide me 2 rides that are less than half an hour combined. So frustrating!! Now it's 9:09 pm and there is no tow truck in sight, drivers are stopping to ask me why aren't my flashers on!!! I opened the trunk to alert drivers that something was wrong.
Now we're freezing and I cannot close the windows because the battery is dead. It's 10:05 pm now, I'm on my 6th call to Hertz, and when I checked the ETA for the tow truck it's telling me it is canceled. 🤦🏻♀️ This can't be happening, but it is. 10:28 pm got a message that the tow truck had been canceled, two police officers came to check the vehicle. The guy from Hertz told me to leave the car and that he's sending another tow truck.10:29 I got another text stating that another tow truck (the 4th) was assigned with an estimated arrival of 180 minutes. 10:30 pm we got our Lyft ride, 15 minutes later we're finally at our son's place.
11:15 I got a call from the police, they towed the vehicle and provided me the location to give to Hertz. I've been on hold with Hertz for 15 minutes since 11:30 pm. Finally, I'm talking to someone to tell them the vehicle was towed by the police and is located at Mark's Automotive 51 Grattan Street, Brooklyn, NY 11237. It's 12:00 am and I want to go to sleep, I have a flight to catch in the morning and the lady from Hertz finally arranged my ride to the airport. 12:30 am I got a call from the tow truck driver that he was looking for the vehicle (7 hours later), I told him the police already towed it. Now I need to sleep 😴 💤 Tired of updating this review. Today May 20, 2025 waited for Hertz Lyft from 8:40 till 9:00 am, no show. Ended up getting an Uber to get to Laguardia Airport!!!

I'm writing to share a consumer protection story that I feel obligated to share. I was recently charged $896.20 by Hertz for emergency roadside assistance — a tow that I declined and never received. After losing the key to my rental car, I contacted Hertz roadside assistance. They informed me they were unable to dispatch a tow to help me. I ultimately declined the service and made other arrangements, paying for a tow myself the next morning.
Despite receiving no assistance, Hertz billed me nearly $900. When I contacted them, I was initially told the charge would be refunded. Then they reversed their decision, saying they had paid a vendor — even though no tow ever occurred. I’ve filed a credit card fraud dispute, formal complaints with the Tennessee Attorney General, Better Business Bureau, and posted publicly on Trustpilot and other consumer sites — and I’ve heard from others who have experienced similar issues with Hertz billing for undelivered services. I’d be happy to speak further, share documentation, and provide a timeline of events. This isn’t just about a single billing error — it’s about holding large corporations accountable for predatory billing practices that harm everyday consumers.

Hertz's customer service is, in my experience, a void where inquiries disappear and customer dissatisfaction thrives. My rental, which began with a semblance of efficiency at DCA, quickly spiraled into a frustrating ordeal reminiscent of a Kafka novel. When extending my rental because my travel plans changed, I was repeatedly transferred between online agents and the DCA location, each providing inconsistent quotes and conflicting instructions. The local office, it seems, exists solely as a theoretical entity, as my voicemails were met with the same resounding silence as my emails.
When I finally managed to connect with someone via the 800 number, the rental price mysteriously increased, adding insult to injury after the extensive runaround I had already endured. Hertz's failure to honor their initial quote demonstrates not only poor business practices but also a blatant disregard for the value of the customer's time and money. This isn't customer service; it's customer mistreatment. Hertz has perfected the art of transforming a simple rental adjustment into a bureaucratic nightmare. I strongly advise against using Hertz, unless you have a penchant for being ignored, misled, and overcharged.
