    When we purchased our home from another person, they were with Direct Energy and we just went with them. When I had a line that was hanging in the backyard, I called them and they told me who to call, and they took care of it. Their service was efficient and they do their job but they’re a little higher and they don’t offer you some perks that other companies do. A friend of ours are billed about 50 bucks less a month and they have the same amount of space as we do but they have weekends that has free electricity, like for washing. So, I’ll think about changing.

    I’ve had Direct Energy for the past 10 years. I was shopping for energy and some person that I knew said he has Direct Energy. I told that person I’d call them, and at the time, a lot of other places do referrals like a credit referral and Direct Energy at the time had the least. So, that was the only place I can save. My rates was what impressed me most about their service. They were always really helpful as far as keeping my rates as low as they can. And I’m pretty satisfied with the plan that I’m on now. I’ve had several questions beginning of the year because I moved a couple times this year and the team at Direct Energy was able to help me. Everything was always great. My experience has been really well.

    We had another energy program, and then Direct Energy bought it. The electricity seems about the same, except that Direct Energy has more online stuff. I like that it emails me and texts me updates. I can just access my bill from my cellphone. We got signed up for 24 months, and we got a free Amazon Echo Dot. I talked on the phone with a rep for a really long time, and he was great about getting set up. He was very professional and understanding, ‘cause I had a bunch of questions since we were moving to a new place. Direct Energy works well for us.

    With Direct Energy, I can access online, so I didn’t ask a rep to change the plan when I noticed a discrepancy. The person whom I spoke with told me it was 11.09. But when I opened it online, it was only 11.07. He offered me the different plans that were available for Direct Energy. This is second time that this happened. But I like Direct Energy. I am a contented customer. But the customer service should offer a better plan so that the customers can stay. I'm doing my best to pay everything automatically, so they should offer me the good one.

    The Direct Energy agents that were in my home told me I was gonna have flat, fixed rate and that my bill would be cheaper than the ones that I already had, and that everything would be inclusive. It ended up being $200 more than what my other energy company would have charged me. Not only that, there was a bunch of fees that was passed on there that was not disclosed to me as well. The big shocker was $140 CenterPoint carry fee or delivery fee on top of everything. They screwed me bad. I ended up with a $500 electric bill when I should have nowhere near $500. They breached their contract when they lied to me. As a result, I have switched energy companies and they will be changed within a week.

    I would tell others not to go with Direct Energy. They could improve on not lying to their paying customers. Instead of telling somebody that they’re getting a cheaper rate, they need to disclose all fees that are involved in the process of what their product is offering. And they did no such thing. There were so many fees on there that my head was spinning. I couldn’t fathom why I was paying $500 a month when there’s only me and my dad living the household. And there’s no way in the world that we could rack up that kind of energy cost. We have never paid that high of a bill since we’ve lived in Houston, no matter who we lived with. So they can come after me for whatever I owe them, if they want. They’re not getting another cent out of me for screwing me. They shut off my electricity and I had to pay $500 to get them to turn it back on so I can switch energy companies. I shouldn’t have to do that. So, they will no longer be my energy company.

    When I moved into my house back in 2003, I signed with Direct Energy and I've been with them ever since. I like the plans they offer and their pricing is good. When the contract was expiring, they gave me a call to see if I wanted to continue on a month-to-month or to pick one of their good variety of plans. I chose one of the plans and I'm happy with it.     I called T U Electric and I set service up and then those scammers tried to scam me out of my money. And now, T U Electric put it on my credit because they said instead of me cancelling it, I put them on hold. I decided to not do business with T U Electric. Never again.     One of the Realtors gave us a false statement about the actual rate of Direct Energy. We tried to call them, and the lady we spoke with said that she will take care of it. And then I tried to call them back to see if everything was okay, but then they didn't call back nor answer my phone calls. So, I'm not sure what I needed to do. But at this point, I really do not want to change providers because the cancellation fee is a lot to take. Right now, I have no choice but to change to a different provider, and I had to put my foot down. I had a previous provider at one point. And then we had to switch to Direct Energy because they gave us a deal, but that didn't go as promised. If they make it right, I will stay as long as the lady keeps the promise that they actually gave us. Still, I'm dissatisfied right now.

    The carrier that I was with had a higher cost plan and they had told me when I had renewed, to just kinda keep checking back because they would have lower rates come up, that the rates could change and I could always switch into a new plan. One of the things I liked about what I had with my previous carrier was the fact that everything was built into one. You knew exactly what you were paying. But as I started looking at some of the others, Direct Energy seemed a little bit more easy to read and to tell what you are gonna be paying, and they had a plan that I liked. It's been seamless with Direct Energy and I've recommended them. The monthly bills had changed a little bit. They went down slightly, about $50. The online process was also very easy.

    I've been with Direct Energy for years. I've always been pleased and they always adjusted my plan. However, we had an electrician come out to see if there was a problem in the house because I noticed my bills were really high for the last year, and then when I went on my account online and noticed that we were on a month-to-month plan now and we're paying 17.6 cents for over a year, I was like, "What? That's what I'm paying? Why didn't Direct call me or adjust my plan?" I switched plans to keep my prices low. I just went on and found a fixed-rate one. Back when I had them at a different house for 24 years I've had to call them once or twice for an issue, but I haven't had to call them here in five years at my new house. I didn't want to switch companies and research and stuff, but I wish they notified me that they could help me out with a better plan instead of waiting for me to call or reach out. I feel like it cost me a lot of extra money this past year.

It does sound like your account had a fixed-rate contract, which expired, and the account transitioned to a month to month, variable rate plan. We certainly never want our customers to be surprised at the rate they are paying, nor do we want to transition a fixed-rate account to a variable rate unexpectedly. For these reasons, and as required by law, we send out end of term notices to any account that has a fixed-rate contract expiring within the next 30-60 days (the requirements on when the letters must be sent vary by state). As a resident of the state of TX, you would have received your notice as part of your monthly billing. The end of terms notice would have included the expiration date of the current contract, instructions on how to renew into another fixed-rate contract (either by phone, or via your online account) and the important disclosure that states if we do not hear from you by the expiration date, the account will automatically move to the month to month, variable rate pricing. Our goal is always to operate as transparently as possible, and in the best interests of our customers. We regret that you had a less than outstanding experience surrounding your renewal, but we look forward to the privilege of continuing to serve you.     In Texas, it’s weird as one has to pick their own electric company, and I just picked the first one, which is Direct Energy, off a website when I needed to get electricity set up in my house. My bills now are much higher than when I was in Mexico with a different provider, but Direct Energy is much lower than when I lived in California. I get the occasional blackouts.     I won’t recommend Direct Energy. They tricked me to switch over from my carrier by offering me an Echo Dot that I never received. Now, I owe my old light bill company $400 for breaking the contract and it's going on my credit. Also, my bill is higher with Direct Energy than it was with Reliant. It is $120 a month. They probably will charge me a fee if I break it off with them. It’s a game they play and they’re playing with me. They know what they are doing. They know I need electricity. If they already got the lowest rate, they didn’t have to put any gift in front of me. I don’t really care about the gift but it was the simple fact that the tactics they used to get me to switch over were underhanded. If they were not gonna honor their word, then they shouldn't even put the word out there.

    A rep for Direct Energy came to my daughter. He was telling me about all the free nights that I could get, and my bill was gonna be the same price as it was with the other electric company. They let me add my daughter onto my account. That’s something I haven’t been able to do in the past and she stays in a different address. They were very professional and nice. They helped a lot and were really good. I enjoy talking to them because nobody was rude, and they had answers to every question that I asked. Their program is wonderful ‘cause I work overnight but on my days off, I’m up at night. I got weekends also. That’s perfect for me. I wash on my off day.     I just signed up with Direct Energy and have received two bills so far. The first bill was $60-something and then the last one was 314.72 which was extremely high. I'm hoping though that it's because my landlord doesn't fix anything which is also why I'm moving. Also, Direct Energy was supposed to send out a $100 gift card. They said I should have received it within three to five weeks but I never did. Then now that I'm moving, they're not gonna give it to me because I have changed plans with a lower rate. That really sucks and that doesn't make any sense to me. If I was supposed to get it because I signed up, then I should still get it. Although the interaction I had with their reps was okay, there was miscommunication. They should make sure they know the information that they're giving to the customers. I'm a single mom so I was really looking forward to that.

    Our original electric company got bought by this company, and I wish they had not. I have had nothing but problems after problems with this company. I call in and get a differ answer every time I speak to someone different. They lie and don't keep their word on things. I am so over this company and will be switching to a new company as soon as possible. I would not wish this company on my worst enemy. Absolute headache is what this mess is. I ask for a Manager and they just send me to someone else who claims to be a supervisor and then after speaking to them and oh they can't fix the issue, the manager is conveniently not available.     Direct Energy is nice but something happened on my two bills to where I thought I owed more than what I actually did. So I have a few hundred dollars in credit. They're kinda holding on to my money. I have Direct Energy at two different residences. I’m gonna have some renters in pretty soon in one of the houses, so the electricity’s gonna be turned off pretty soon. And Direct Energy needs to send me my money back. I’ve told them that I’ve gonna leave it on until someone turns it on because I wasn’t sure when I was gonna get a renter in. But I just found out this week that I’m gonna get a renter this weekend. So, I need to get in touch with Direct Energy.

    Before, I got a good rate with Direct Energy, and they let me know when the contract was up. But this last past winter, I had really high electric bills. Then, come to find out, I had a variable rate, and they didn't let me know the contract was up. So, I didn't get to lock in a good rate. And I was paying way more than what I think I should've been paying, so I wasn’t happy this past winter with $500 electric bills. It’s weird because the summertime at that house, I could crank the AC up and it wouldn’t be that bad. But come wintertime, I get a really high bill. The reps at Direct Energy have been all right. I called them to get the move to another house, and I had to have them turn it back on at the other house because I was gonna have some renters in, but they backed out at the last minute, and I had to call Direct Energy to turn it back on. And they got it back on the same day.

    I’ve had Direct Energy for about 7 years now. We’ve always had higher electricity bills for as long as we can remember. So ultimately just thought our usage was the issue. It wasn’t! It was our rate! We’ve been paying nearly 3 times as much worth this company. They raise the rates without notification. You think to yourself it was just a bad month. But in reality we’ve overpaid $200-$300 per month for nearly 6 years. That $18,000. Insane!! When confronted about it they said they could give me a rate 60% less than I’m currently paying.     It seems that your original, new customer fixed rate plan expired on 1/31/2016. As is our standard practice, we mailed out a renewal notification 6-8 weeks prior to expiration; in this case, the renewal information was mailed to you on 12/1/2015. The renewal packet that we send gives specific information regarding the upcoming expiration date, available offers and incentives, and the important disclosures about how if we do not hear from our customer prior the the expiration date, the account will transition into a month to month, variable plan. It seems that we did not receive a request from you to renew the contract, so the rate plan did change over to a month to month, variable rate on 1/31/2016. We attempted to reach you two additional times regarding your rate and the options available for renewal, but we again did not hear back from you (the additional mailings were sent out to you on 3/3/2016 & 5/26/2016).

    One of our top priorities is to keep our customers informed by operating in as transparent a manner as possible. This is why we make numerous attempts, both before and after the fixed rate contract expires, to notify our customers and present them with renewal options.     After comparing rates among all of the companies, I saw that Direct Energy had competitive prices so I tried it. I've had it for about four years now and the service is good. My bills are lower by $60 to $100 in the summer. But also, I changed the thermostat. Then whenever I speak with their representatives, they have always been very kind. The issue, however, is with the people they contract with. I had a leak on my water heater and I have the insurance for that. I called Direct Energy, then they gave me the number for somebody. This person did not respect the agreement and charged me for the service. It’s not Direct Energy's fault, though, it's just the people are not respecting their contract with them.

    Accidentally discovered that my account is with Direct Energy since 2015, do not remember signing up with them. Their Rates are Hugely, up to 7 (Seven!) Times higher than other suppliers. They are taking advantages, stealing from unaware consumers, especially senior retired people on fixed income like I am. Their Customer Service is very poor: long phone delays, incompetent agents, refuse to connect with a manager. Their reply to my email complaint is multitude of daily generic marketing useless meaningless emails which never stopped!

    I finally put them in a junk folder. They are Liars! Over a month ago promised a new lower rate, takes months to implement! In a mean time I am paying 7 times more than with other suppliers! Promised Visa Gift Card as a token compensation, it has never come! They’re should be out of business, should be investigated for their deceptive practices! Stay Away From Direct Energy!

    Back when I was 18 years old and I had just gotten my first apartment, my landlord recommended Direct Energy as I had low credit history. He said I was highly likely to get approved there. Back in the day, interacting with their reps was really bad. When I lived in a mobile home, I remember getting billed for $500, and I was not making a lot of money. I would ask them why and they'd say, “Your computer or your TV is sucking up a lot of energy.” They were threatening to send me to collections if I didn’t pay my bill. Now, it’s gotten better ‘cause they have more technology. They’ve also gotten better now that I have an actual house.     They overcharge for services which is a legalized scam. If you are on my bill anymore it's fraud since I canceled and will take it to a higher level and get an attorney. Need a class action lawsuit against this shady company. He was very informative and explained what I needed to do. However, I’m still a little confused as far as what would be the best pricing for my energy needs.     I was using Reliant and Direct Energy’s rate at the time was much cheaper. We signed up a year ago and I did everything online. Navigating the website was great. The service has been good and they would follow up if I’m behind and would call. However, whenever we have any failures or anything, I can’t call Direct Energy to get it squared away, because they don’t service the lines in our area. The first time it happened, we called Direct Energy and they told us we had to call Reliant. Reliant then turned around and sent out the repair equipment. Getting the service back and running could take anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours. Nevertheless, I’ve got a good deal. People should get them.

    I used to pay $130 with Direct Energy before, but now I'm paying around $220 and sometimes more. I'm in a contract, so there's nothing I could really do about it, other than switch companies and then pay the cancellation fee, which I am planning on doing sometime soon. The last time I was in contact with Direct Energy, I wasn't too happy because they cut my services off. I told them I was gonna be switching over, but there was no set moving date. But the lady put in the moving date, but there's no home on my property yet. So, they ended up cutting off my electricity, not warning me a bit or letting me know, and I had to pay the reactivation fee. It wasn't a good experience and that made me want to switch over. My experience with Direct Energy was good until this happened.

    It was also not a good experience altogether when it came to trying to get my electricity back on. They said it would only be like a few hours. I do have a disabled daughter that is on medical equipment that needs her medical equipment to be plugged in. And we were without electricity for a good eight or nine hours. It was very slow to try to get our electricity back on, where we have to leave our home because my daughter can't survive without her medical equipment. It was horrible. I tried to explain that to Direct Energy, and they just said that they didn't have control over it. I was frustrated.

    I told them that if they gave me a timeframe, I could deal with a few hours, but they were not giving me an explanation. They told me that they couldn't give me a timeframe. Also, different representatives giving different information didn't help. Direct Energy needs to be more consistent. It's hard to interact when people give you different information, and you feel like your payment slides.

    I switched over to Direct Energy as their rates were a little but better than my previous provider. By transferring over, I wasn’t penalized. Direct Energy absorbed the cost. And then, they gave me a $50 credit on my electric bill. But one thing that I've learned is that there is a surge charge that Direct Energy charges all its customers.

    The reps are doing their job, and I didn't feel a lot of pressure. But a lot of the salespeople seem to understand kilowatt-hours. So, most of the conversation is centered around that. Even if my salesperson was 100% clear on several things that they covered, and trying to understand it all in one sitting, it wasn't easy because I'm not used to the terminology. But once you start studying it, then you start to understand. It kinda comes together. I looked into another provider and Reliant again, but I didn't get **. So I'm more satisfied than not satisfied with Direct Energy. But I have to go through someone else to get my electricity restored.

    Direct Energy’s service has been fine but when the rates go up unexpectedly and I have to call and renegotiate, I feel like I’m overpaying. When I first moved in five years ago in June, I was paying $45 and it has gone as high as 120 and then my recent bill was $98, so I feel like I could probably find way cheaper electricity. I spoke to their team a few months ago and I don’t feel like I got resolved on that.     I’ve been using Direct Energy since the time I moved to Texas. Every year, my monthly bill has only gone up though my usage hasn't. I’m not getting the best rate possible. The information they provided was not very clear because they said that the rate is 12 cents a kilowatt-hour. But then, the rate is at 17 or 18 cents because I'm not using as much as I'm supposed to use to get the 12 cents rate. My usage is below 500 kilowatt-hours and so the rate I have is much higher. Though direct Energy's reps are fine, it's hard to explain issues to them sometimes especially if I get to the call center. There's a communication gap until I raise the issue to a level two or level three. It’s more of a hassle just to call them and get something done.

    There was a time when I moved from one place to another and I wanted to transfer service with Direct Energy. Prior to the move, my contract got extended automatically at a much higher rate, even before being able to choose a new plan. I wasn't aware of how that happened without me being informed. Still, when I called, they changed my plan as a courtesy. Apart from the issues I mentioned, it has been great working with Direct Energy. I use their mobile app and it’s very convenient. While it requires some fixes, it makes it easy to pay the bills on time.

    I had a tough experience with Direct Energy. The people didn’t understand me, and they put electric service into another property that I didn’t even own. The town had to get involved. It was a miscommunication and it took a lot of long phone calls to resolve it. But it was all good. They were all nice people. They were patient with me when I was talking to them. They did a real good job. I tried to go residential and the zone commercial. And then I went commercial on it. Direct Energy hooked it up, and they did fine. Also, the power company is really good. But Direct Energy should have their reps really listen and make sure where they want to put the power. We're getting a lot Indian folks we're talking to and they speak real well, but sometimes, it is better to pay a little bit more to have in-house, and keep people happy and sell more electricity.

    First, the guidelines for this site make you certify that you have no personal or business dealings with the organisation you are writing about. Well, that’s silly because obviously I do that’s why I am writing this. I signed up under a fixed plan over 3 years ago. My bill has been increasing over those 3 years. Our daughter moved back in with us and I assumed we were just using more utilities. I called RG&E and asked about my bill going up. I was told that my supplier Direct Energy was charging 3 times the going rate for my gas and electric. I called Direct Energy and was told they start an investigation (which would take 7-9 business days) and that they would calculate how much I overpaid and I would be reimbursed.

    Then I receive a call from Robert in “The office of the President”. Robert apologized and offered me a $300 credit on my RG&E bill. I hung with Robert and started to analyse my bill. Direct Energy was charging me almost 3x the average rate for my gas and electric. I estimate that I paid Direct Energy approx. $6800 in the last 2.5 years. Since the rate they charged me increased every 6 months or so until it reached the current almost 3x rate I will assume that I paid on average double the average rate. So I overpaid $3400 to Direct Energy. When I called Robert back I told him about my calculations. I told him that $300 was not enough “good will gesture” for what I overpaid. Robert said that the company sent me a letter about my fixed rate expiring and that I was not owed anything. I never received a letter or notification. Robert said that the company’s proof that they sent me the letter was that they have my correct address on file.

    How many people has this happened to? Does the company offer good fixed rate plans just to get people in then they can double or triple their rates when the person doesn’t respond (because they never received) an expiration notice. The company must do a better job of notifying customers of the expiration and increases in cost.

    I was originally with Reliance Energy, and I bought a home so I thought it was a good time to switch since I was gonna have to move the service. I had a relationship with Direct Energy because I work at Houston Community College and they were one of our donors. They supported scholarships for our students, so I wanted to use their business. Plus their price was less than what I would normally pay with the previous company. Switching over was fantastic because when I was moving from the home I was renting to the one I was buying, I accidentally turned the energy off before I finished moving. Direct Energy was able to let me just buy points. Also, I got a $50 gift card which was nice as well.     Direct Energy is a lot cheaper than the previous company I had. And the only other company that I had that was cheaper than Direct Energy kept cutting my electricity off, and Direct Energy does not do that. That’s a huge plus in my book. I do most of my stuff online, like paying my bill, renew my plan. I like their website. I’m a very user-friendly type of person, so it has to be very user-friendly. Everything is explained right there, so I don’t have any problems with that. Now the app is a different story. I’ve been trying to use the app to my bill, ‘cause I’m at work, and then I’m off work, and I’m running and I’m going. And I’ve just yet to be able to get it to do anything for me. It doesn’t do anything. It’s just sitting there.

    Now that I'm with Direct Energy, I don’t have to worry about my electricity getting cut off. They’ve given me a free smart thermostat. They’ve given me a free camera for my home too. It’s like the people that I just referred to them, they got a free Alexa. So, that kind of stuff always helps. I like to be able to sit in my office in another town and be able to control my thermostat.

    Signed initial contract with this company for a fixed rate of electric. When contract ended the company doubled the KW charge and makes no effort to inform customer that contract has expired or what the new rate will be or what you will be charged if you do not renew the contract. I estimate that over time this company rip me off for about $2.000.00. For a senior citizen on fixed income that hurts. When I called to cancel the contract and go back to my regular electric company they wanted to song and dance me into another contract. I consider them dishonest and not trustworthy. Painful lesson.

WRONG!! I am currently paying way too much with DE. Not only that but I can not switch plans within their company without paying a cancellation fee in order to save our house any money. I NEVER had that issue with any other company EVER! I am just disgusted. I will probably end up paying the $135 to get out of the contract to save money and go back to TXU or Reliant. Just disgusting!!

    I have been a loyal and trusting (9 years!) customer of Direct Energy and instead of them treating me better for it they have shamefully taken advantage of my trust and loyalty. For all of the months in 2019 they have been charging me 13.4 cents per KWh...almost twice the Duquesne Light default service price of 7.4 cents per kWh. When I asked the customer service rep why the price was so high, he could not answer. He could not even give a general explanation of why the price was so much higher than any market based energy prices for this year. He told me he would submit my questions to a "analyst" who would get back to me in 24 hours. When this time passed I called and was told that they would need 5 business days to get back to me. This company is making me feel like a sucker for being so loyal and trusting to them.

    Received a phone call from Direct Energy and within a few minutes, they had requested all of the information needed to switch my service provider without asking me if I wanted to switch. The caller asked for my sdi number (AEP Ohio) and never once called it the service delivery identifier. She called it the 17 digit number under the generation part of the bill. I then said that she almost had all the information needed to switch my provider and she told me that I would not be switching from AEP.

    When confronted about that, she said it was my verbiage that was wrong and that is why she could say that. She was trying to play my ignorance to get her way. I asked to speak to her manager and she refused to get her manager. Unsuspecting people could be tricked into switching service providers without knowing it and ultimately costing them more money. My rate is better than the 5.9 cents they were offering me so it would have cost me money. Be aware and informed in the decisions you make over the phone.

    I’ve been using Direct Energy for the past 10 years at my prior address. I've always been happy with them so whenever I moved, I just switched to them. I looked at other providers and checked their rates. But in the end, it was just easier to transfer over to Direct Energy. I was able to transfer everything online through my mobile app. That made it really easy to do. Also, I love the mobile app because you can check your daily usage and it shows whether it’s higher or lower. It gives you your daily charge and you can kinda keep things under control that way. The only thing I wish Direct Energy would do is offer the Nest thermostat. I like all my stuff mobile and it just makes it easier. That was one of the things that I looked at whenever I switched. Other than that Direct is very user-friendly.

    Also, I never had a problem with customer service. But there is one thing am confused about. My daughter moved out to her own apartment and I referred her to Direct Energy. She got her $50 credit on her bill after her third month, but I never received mine. That’s the only miscommunication that I’ve had so far because they said that they didn’t have it listed under my referral. They said she is gonna have to call them and try to straighten it out on her end. That is not even a problem though. It's just a matter of calling and getting it all squared away the right way.

    I had Ambit before I switched to Direct Energy. The weekends with Direct are free whereas Ambit doesn't have that. Direct is a lot cheaper too. Their people were pretty good and I never had any problems with anybody. But they are supposed to be sending me something. They never did though.

    I used Direct Energy when I first moved to Texas in 2006. I was just shopping at the time, and I looked at the different rates, and they seemed competitive. I kinda stuck with them when I came back to Texas in 2013. Enrolling with them was easy. I just did the online to search for the program that I needed at the time. However, it’s just interesting because they offer “fixed-rate plans”, but when you read the fine print, it’s really not a fixed-rate plan because it says that the rate could change during the course of your contract. So, it really is kind of a variable.

    But when I spoke to a representative when I did the address for the initial signup, that was a good experience. And then for the renewal, I did that online. But then, I sold my house, so I had to get out of that contract. And the person I spoke with was extremely helpful. Direct Energy is a good company. They’ve got, for the most part, good rates. They’ve also got enough options with a year, a two-year, or a three-year. If I move back to Texas, I’d go back with them again.

    We're comparing rates with different companies, and found that Direct Energy has the best rate. And then, we've been with them for four years. We just got renewed the second three-year contract and the renewal was real simple. It was real easy to just get online and fill in all the information and get it all done.     If you sign a fixed-rate contract with Direct Energy, then once the contract expires, they will double your electricity bill and bill you for all you're worth. They can do this without your consent, too: signing the fixed-rate contract gives them explicit permission to do this, and unless you read the contract in its entirety and are already familiar with policies like these, it's easy to miss. As a result, they take advantage of their consumers. After my fixed-rate electricity plan with Direct Energy expired, they doubled the price and substantially increased my monthly utility bills. Even after I switched providers, it still took a month for the change to take effect. Although not *technically* dishonest, it's nevertheless a very sleazy business practice. Disappointing.

    I received a very high bill (146.47) for electricity in May. When I called Direct Energy the representative said that my contract expired last August. Because it expired they raised my rate to 12.8 per kilowatt hour which they referred to as a market rate. A chart comparing different contract rates for Alberta energy companies shows a typical contract rate of about 6.0 per kilowatt hour. How can 12.8 be considered a market rate. I apparently missed a letter telling me about the contract expiry and I never received a courtesy call asking if I wanted to renew the contact at half the rate. The rates are not on the bill so it’s easy to be unaware of what rate you are being charged. I have never had an energy contract expire in the past. As a “valued” customer I expect a courtesy call or I expect to be charged a rate comparable to other customers. Not more than double.

    This is clearly gouging and I wonder how much money they are making by gouging unsuspecting customers. When I called they reduced my rate to 5.59 which is typical market rate but this does not erase a year of being charged double. I feel consumers should be protected from these excessive rates and all companies should be required to show the rate charged on the bills.

    I had Spark Energy before and my rates were good. I was happy with them. But Direct came out with some kind of nights free for the first year and I looked into that. I didn’t mean to sign up but apparently, I did. And I ended up having electricity with two companies, but we got it worked out. I've been really satisfied with Direct Energy but my contract’s up and I haven't had time to really compare them with what else is out there. I'm looking for something around 9 or 10 per kilowatt hour, if I can find it. TXU’s advertising all the time about free weekends and free nights with Direct Energy, which I like and have taken advantage of. But when I looked that up, they’re paying 14 cents a kilowatt hour compared to 9 or 10 with other companies. So, I don’t know if that’s such a deal or not. Right now, my bill’s going up and my rates changed because my contract’s up. So if I could get a better rate from Direct Energy, it'd be fine.

    I’ve been with Direct Energy for a long time, and a lot of people are telling me that somebody else is cheaper than them. But I told them that I didn’t wanna switch because that’s what happened to me last time. I switched to somebody and the bill went up higher than anything. I have to reapply for some kind of package with Direct Energy so that my bill won't go up so high.     I like the fact that Direct Energy has the free weekends, and that I'm not going through the middle person. And I wanted to try a new service. The steps they gave me for signing up was easy. One thing that was a little tough was when I wanted to pay my first bill. It wasn’t fully set up so I can access my account over the online website. So, I had to call it in to have my password reset because they never gave me a temporary password. But that was the only hiccup that I had towards that. I'm happy with everything else. I got a full cycle bill last month, which was not bad from comparison to the other ones by about $40 or $56 difference. So, that’s good.

    Direct Energy owns HWA, a home warranty company that has the worst customer service of any business I've dealt with. Tomorrow will be the beginning of week 4 for me with no AC. I filed a claim with them 3 weeks ago. You need one of their approved contractors to even to even get the ball rolling to get it fixed. After several days and no contractor I was finally able to get a list of companies from them and called and found one myself and got an appointment 8 days after my original claim. Parts were needed, so THEIR approved contractor put in a request.

    It has been 13 days (turnaround on this is supposed to be 48 hrs) and the request has neither been approved nor denied so I've been sitting in the heat for 3 weeks total. The temperature is spiking to unsafe levels next week and I have no answers. The energy part of the business seems to have good reviews but I would question the ethics of a company that has such poor reviews for one of its entities (Google Home Warranty of America reviews).

    Several years ago, a young man from Direct Energy came to the house and showed us how Texas Power & Light was charging more. So I switched to Direct Energy and there was some problems at first.     I switched from Ambit to Direct Energy because of better rates. Ambit keeps jacking their rates up, and they were lying to me about how much I was actually paying. I was doing some digging, and I found out. On the other hand, I’m quite happy with Direct Energy. I’ve never really had a problem with them. One thing that happened about a couple of months ago, apparently, was a computer glitch. It had me on a month-to-month plan but I knew that I already selected a 12-month plan. I was really shocked and was wondering why I was paying more. I was doing some digging and saw that I was paying a month-to-month plan. I’m not locked in for a deal. If you’re on a month-to-month plan, they sit there and charge you more because you could just terminate and leave any time you want.

    But the reps at Direct Energy are very helpful and very kind. They got around and fixed things real fast as well as reimbursed me partially 'cause they realized it was their mistake, not mine. Direct Energy is better than anybody else around here. All those other ones just lie to you and they’re not straightforward with you about the rates. With Direct Energy, if you wanna look for it, you will find it. The other one that comes close to them is Cirro Energy but their rates are still higher than Direct Energy. Direct Energy has the lowest rates still. I love them. I’ve been using them for about 3 years now and renewing with them is pretty easy. You can do it over the internet. But I would recommend one to talk to them on the phone so no mistakes and mishaps happen like what happened to me.

    I have no problems with Direct Energy at all. Yesterday, Dallas was hit with a pretty heavy storm that has knocked down a lot of power lines so I don’t have power in my house. I called over and over again yesterday to report that there’s a downed power line in my backyard and I couldn’t get through. I called 911 and 911 reached out to Oncor which is the main power provider and that's by them, but I haven’t heard back from anybody. I don’t know how long the status of my wait is at this point.

    They’ve got an automated message and nobody personally was picking up the line. There's a message saying that energy crews have been out since the storm and they're working to restore power, but due to the extent of the damage, I gotta be prepared for multiple days, potentially, without power. I feel for them because this is kind of a crazy storm and I see damage everywhere, but it would be nice to personally talk to somebody and kind of get a better understanding of what exactly their plan is and what’s going on. Everything up to this point has been very convenient. Just the lack of personal customer experience is starting to make me a little bit frustrated.

    We’ve had a couple rolling blackouts here in Texas due to the storms. And when I called Direct Energy, they said we gotta call the co-op here. But I’m paying them. Maybe I just don’t understand how everything works, but I ended up calling them and then they told me to just call the co-op here. And the biggest reason I signed up with them is because they don’t require to do a deposit. Every co-op here are like $500 and I know my credit score sucks, but I ain’t got that type of money.     I was looking for a place with decent energy prices and a friend of mine who had been in the area for some years recommended Direct Energy. He told me that they were fair, and he had some great rates at the time, so I decided to go with them. One of the things I like is they always send me an email about my bill and a while back, I didn't understand why my bill was so high for one of the months since I’m not at home during the day. When I called them, the young lady I spoke to gave me a breakdown of what happened and she explained it well. It was running off of a yearly deal and we corrected the problem.     I always really like Direct Energy better than TXU. They are more on top of everything and quicker to respond. They're more flexible with the plans that they offer. They're always friendly and knowledgeable of the product or the plans that they have at least.     When I first went with Direct Energy I was happy with them, and I put two properties, and they gave separate account numbers. But then, I added two more properties, and they put them under the same number as one of the other properties. And then, I hate it since then. There’s three of them with the same account number, and I get a bill one week for one amount, and the next week, for another amount. And the next week, it’s like all three amounts together. I can’t even find it on the website how to break it down. I paid the bill last week for $50 and I got a new one this week for $149 which I’m sure it has last week’s on it, and I paid it Friday, and I’ve put it in the mail Friday. And now, I was looking online, I only owe $15, so I’m confused. I don’t know what goes to what house, and I need it broken down for tax purposes.

    I had to call them to find out how much I had spend on one property this month. Their reps were nice, but I got nowhere. I argued with them for two hours, seemed like one day, about trying to get it separated out, and they wouldn’t do anything. So, then, I found out when my time’s up and realize I can change some of them over. I might keep one with them, but the other ones, I’ve got to separate them out so that at the end of the year, it won’t be such a hassle. I think they did that because they were offering $100 rebate if you added a new account, and I added it on my other account as the deal. They didn’t wanna give me the $100. If they said I couldn’t have the $100 and put it on a separate number, I would have been more happy.

    I did everything at Direct Energy online and it was pretty good, though I did get multiple emails. I was trying to set up my online account so I can do online payments, but the account number that they gave me was not the same as the account number on my bill. So, when I was trying to make the payment from the bill, it was not showing up. Then I realized I have two account numbers. Nonetheless, I got a good deal.

    When I moved and bought my own house, I started with Direct Energy. I haven't had any problems with them and it hasn't given me any problems. The first time I dealt with their CS team was when I was signing up and the next time was when I switched over. The reps were both good. Back in May, I got an email and at the end of the email, it said, "You could call this number to ask more questions," and so that was when I called. I used to do the prepaid and just last month, I switched over to the monthly. My favorite thing about the whole thing is that I can pay for it online so I’m not late.
