Others say the savings never arrived and now pay both Sunrun and their utility company, often blaming an undersized system.

Sunrun’s products include solar panels, battery storage and backup power options.
Solar panels
Sunrun solar panel systems are customized for your home’s needs, and its panels feature high-efficiency photovoltaic cells.
Reviewers often say Sunrun’s solar panels produce plenty of power and lower their electric bills, but some report underperforming systems, poor panel placement or long periods with little to no production. A smaller number mention roof leaks, wildlife damage and other installation-related problems.
Battery storage
Home battery systems can store excess solar energy for use during outages or at night. Sunrun offers solar battery storage options through Tesla, Lunar Energy and FranklinWH.
Reviewers often like Sunrun’s batteries for seamless backup power and using stored solar energy at night. Complaints tend to focus on high costs, failed batteries, slow repairs and sales promises that don’t match how the battery actually works.
Backup power options
Through its partnership with Ford, Sunrun offers equipment that can let a compatible F-150 Lightning power your home during an outage. Sunrun also offers the SPAN smart electrical panel, which lets you monitor and manage your home’s energy use and battery backup.
Sunrun costs
Sunrun doesn’t disclose its specific costs online, though it does offer financing options. The average solar panel system costs around $25,000, according to Sunrun. Your actual price depends on the size of your system, equipment and other factors. Based on recent reviews, Sunrun’s solar panel equipment costs are above the industry average, with reviewers reporting that their final costs were higher than they initially expected.
“I thought we were buying about $20,000 worth of equipment, but it ended up being closer to $40,000,” Jed in Texas said. Jed also pays about $60 a month in utility delivery charges and around $200 for electricity during two summer months.
Lystra in Florida paid $54,000 for a system designed to cover 85% of their electricity use, including a backup battery. They said the battery itself cost about $9,000, plus installation.
On the higher end, Rich in California said their Sunrun solar system cost $60,000.
Typical costs by solar system size
Solar system costs tend to vary depending on the size of your system, which is measured in kilowatts (kW). Here are some typical costs, according to our research.
| Solar system size | Typical cost range |
|---|---|
| 4 kilowatts | $8,000 to $15,000 |
| 6 kilowatts | $12,000 to $20,000 |
| 10 kilowatts | $18,000 to $30,000 |
Sunrun payment options
Sunrun offers leases, power purchase agreements (PPAs) and solar loans. You can also buy your system outright.
With a solar lease, you make monthly payments to use the system, and Sunrun typically handles maintenance and repairs. With a PPA, you pay for the electricity the system produces instead of buying the panels.
What to know about Sunrun contracts
Sunrun contracts can vary depending on how you pay, so it’s important to understand the terms before signing. Here are some details to watch closely.
Contract length. Sunrun leases and PPAs can last 20 to 25 years. Some reviewers said they didn’t fully understand how long they were committing for when they signed.
Annual increases. Reviewers commonly report annual payment increases of about 3% to 4%. Over a long contract, those increases can add up, so compare future payments with what you expect to pay your utility.
Production guarantees. Not every agreement works the same way. Check whether your contract includes a production guarantee, how often performance is reviewed and what happens if the system falls short.
Selling your home. A lease or PPA can make a home sale more complicated. Depending on the contract, the buyer may need to take over the agreement or the system may need to be bought out. Some reviewers report delays during this process.
Sunrun solar installation process
Sunrun handles most of the process, from system design to permits and final approval. The installation itself may take only a day or two, but the full process can take much longer.
1. Go over options with a representative
A Sunrun representative will go over your energy use, system size, battery options, costs and available incentives.
2. Sunrun designs your system
Sunrun may use satellite imagery and a site survey to plan panel placement and estimate production. This is also a good time to make sure your roof is in good condition, since replacing it later can require removing and reinstalling the panels.
3. Sunrun submits permits
Once you approve the final design, Sunrun submits the required permits. This can take several weeks, depending on your location.
4. Installation actually starts
Sunrun or a certified installation partner will mount the panels, connect the equipment and test the system. Reviewers often praise the installation crews for being professional and efficient, with many jobs completed in one to two days. A smaller number report roof leaks or other installation-related problems.
5. Get inspection and approval
Local inspectors and your utility may need to approve the system before it can be turned on. Some reviewers say this step took weeks or months, so ask for an estimated permission-to-operate date, not just an installation date.

How much does a Sunrun service call cost?
Service is generally included with leases and PPAs. If you bought your system, labor coverage may expire, and some reviewers report service-call quotes of about $500 to $760. Check your contract for post-warranty fees.
Do I still pay Sunrun if my system isn’t producing?
It depends on your agreement. Lease and loan payments generally continue while a system is offline. With a PPA, your payment is based on how much electricity the system produces. You may still face a higher utility bill while the system is down.
What happens if I need a new roof?
Sunrun can remove and reinstall the panels, but homeowners usually pay for it. Reviewers report costs ranging from several thousand dollars to more than $20,000, so it’s smart to replace an aging roof before installing solar.
Can I get out of my solar contract with Sunrun?
You generally can’t get out of a solar contract early with Sunrun if you have a lease or PPA. If you need to end your agreement, your primary options are to transfer it to a homebuyer or prepay the remaining balance. If you own the system, you may include it in your home’s sale or choose to remove it at your expense. At the end of your agreement, Sunrun offers the choice to renew your lease annually, purchase the system or have it removed at no cost.
What happens with my Sunrun system if I move?
What happens with your Sunrun system if you move depends on whether homebuyers are interested in retaining your solar system. Sunrun allows you to transfer your solar service agreement to the person who buys your home through a streamlined process involving contact verification, digital signatures and a soft credit check. If the buyer declines the agreement, you can prepay the remaining balance and include the system in your home’s sale.
Why is my Sunrun bill so high?
Your Sunrun bill may be high if you have the wrong size system for your energy usage or if your system is underperforming.
Has Sunrun been sued over its sales practices?
In July 2024, the Connecticut attorney general sued Sunrun and several sales partners, alleging forged signatures, impersonation of customers and other deceptive sales practices. Sunrun said the representatives involved were not employees and that it stopped accepting accounts from them in 2023. The case is still pending, and the allegations have not been proven.
Still have questions?
Is Sunrun legit?
Sunrun is a legitimate solar company founded in 2007. It installs and services residential solar systems across much of the U.S.
Legitimacy isn’t the most useful question here, though. The better question is about what customers experience after signing up.
For instance, Robert in Nevada said his installation was seamless and his monthly costs dropped substantially.
Denise in Illinois had the opposite experience: Her panels were installed in April 2026 but still weren’t producing months later, even though payments had started.
Before signing, pay close attention to the contract length, annual price increases, production guarantees, service fees and the condition of your roof.
Is Sunrun worth it?
Whether Sunrun is worth it depends on your contract, system performance and local electricity rates. Some customers report incredible savings. Others say their combined solar and utility costs were higher than expected, and the system isn’t really worth it financially.
Sunrun may be worth considering if you want flexible payment options, but pay close attention to contract length, annual price increases and expected production before signing.
When customers save
Dave in Massachusetts said their monthly electricity costs dropped from about $230 to roughly $100 total. Heather in Arizona said their summer electric bill fell from about $400 to $40.
When savings fall short
Others say the savings didn’t match what they expected. Tymur in Florida said their combined solar and utility costs sometimes reached $240 to $250 a month. Albert in New Jersey said they pay about $288 a month for solar and have seen winter electric bills as high as $600.
Other costs to consider
Some reviewers reported service-call fees of around $600 to $700. Drew in Texas said removing and reinstalling panels for roof work was quoted at more than $8,000.
Before signing, look closely at expected production, annual payment increases and any service or panel-removal fees.
