I had a very wonderful experience with them. The rep was an excellent person to work with. She stayed on top of everything for us and answered every question we had. The process went faster than I expected and we came well inside the timeline. From what we have discovered, the less you owe on your current mortgage, the more cash out you can obtain. We're now debt-free from everything and so the reverse mortgage makes life a little easier. We've referred them already.

I filled out the application around February 22nd. After I did that, they had someone come out and appraise the house. At that point, my application was approved and they set up a closing date and then I closed. From the application itself, the process only took about a month. My loan officer was excellent and very helpful. He knew what he was talking about. He was available when I had a question. He was proactive in getting in touch with me to let me know what the next steps were. Overall, Finance of America Reverse knew what they were talking about and they were very competitive.

My grandmother was in need of a reverse mortgage and from a cost standpoint, they had the best deal. We had a very good experience with the reps. My grandmother answered some preliminary questions and did the application over the phone. But there was a small hiccup with the closing process. They didn't have the documents ready to go at the time the closing was supposed to happen. Still, we were able to get it done on the same day, just a few hours later. Other than that, the terms were about what I expected.

The process was drawn out way too long. There were a lot of bumps. I didn't quite understand the need in the expanse for two appraisals, but I understand that perhaps that was an FHA requirement. But my agent, Ellen, was great. She was very innovative. When she made her initial proposal, she recommended a package that say that the others were just a little more standard. She attached a carrot to her proposal.

The initial process was alright. But they started having to get Mickey Mouse crap that wasn't really necessary. My wife is in a nursing home and she has dementia. She is not on the title for this house. She was on the title for the house that I sold two years ago. But we had to put her name on the note, which was ridiculous since she has dementia and can't make decisions on her own part. I had to provide an original power of attorney. They kept telling me that was required by the Feds and by FHA. Maybe so, I just thought it was ridiculous to have to go through all that crap when my wife was not on the title for the house.
Other than that, the guy who worked with me, Tim, was nice. I chewed him out a couple of times when they asked for Mickey Mouse stuff that I didn't think was really required. But I went ahead and provided it. The interest rate was a bit high but it averages out over a period of time. I could have gone to the bank and closed the loan on this house, refinanced it in three days and the process took three months. Also, the bank would not have required any information on my spouse since she was not on the title. They would not have run a credit report on her and I would not have had to provide an original power of attorney.

I worked with Lou and he was pretty much on top of things. He was pretty straight up with me. He answered my questions and didn't feed me any bull. But the closing company that Finance of America Reverse used left a little bit to be desired. They were wiring the proceeds to the proper places, but when they did it, they kind of mailed them out and I don't know what they waited for on one of them, but it was all taken care of now. The rates are a little high. But the terms are all right.

I worked with David and he was great. He kept me informed of everything. He always got back to me when I called him. He was on top of things. The appraisers that came out were both okay. The first appraiser was looking at stuff that really didn't matter because a week before he came out, we had a flood in the garage and I had to get a new water heater and drywall and do copper piping. So what we did was we took everything and piled it up at the other end of the garage area. The appraiser said, “Well, that's like a fire hazard.” But I told him, “I know that. I know that. Don't worry. We have to get everything fixed.” The second appraiser was an older woman and she seemed to be very experienced. Overall, I’m pleased with Finance of America Reverse.

Finance of America was one of the top 10 companies, and working with their reps was great. The application process was pretty extensive. I called some other place first, and they couldn’t give me the information. They had to take my information down and then send it to somebody else. They would figure it all out for me, and then they would get back to me. When I called Finance of America, the rep looked it right up on her computer and told me everything I needed to know. The other place did get back to me, and they had pretty much the same information and about the same interest rate too. The person I dealt with at Finance of America got in touch with me and kept me informed. They answered any questions I had. It was a great experience.

Andrew was very nice, kind and attentive. He always let me know anything and kept in touch with me about certain things that I needed to know. He also kept in touch with my son. The only thing that bothered me was that Finance of America Reverse kept my brother-in-law's address and phone number rather than about me because he was the one who first inquired. Andrew helped us to try to change everything but Finance of America Reverse still kept my brother-in-law’s email and they were sending him email instead of sending it to me. So I wasn't getting a lot of information. But Andrew saw to it that I did. The whole process went smoothly with Andrew, my son and my brother-in-law being by my side.

In the beginning, I was very doubtful because they were just too good to be true. But after witnessing them, I would rate them a 10 out of 10. The lady that I dealt with from the beginning was helpful, courteous and kind. The appraiser was knowledgeable and excellent. But the rep promised that there would be literature sent to me sometime after the finances and I haven't gotten them.

Finance of America offered us a better deal as far as credit score is concerned towards our closing fees and the person that I had in contact with was more knowledgeable. The application process itself went fairly quickly. We are at least eight months in getting the rest of the process done, mostly because we had trouble with getting appraisers out because they're so busy.
One thing that strikes out for me is communication. When we signed the documents at the end, there were some things that we were not aware of. We went and signed what was all in there before we got to the signing process. It’s my understanding that there were some communication issues with the guy that we were dealing with, too. He didn’t get the information, so he couldn’t relay it to us at the very end. Most of our interactions were via email. He responded in a reasonable amount of time. He was very willing to answer any and all questions that I had. He didn't seem to get frustrated when I had a lot of questions. He was kind of unflappable.
I just emailed our person, Ryan, and within a reasonable amount of time, he would answer my questions. Once in a while, he would call me if something came up that he wanted me to know right away instead of emailing me. I initiated the contact with Finance of America because I didn’t want to just go with one company. I wanted another company to compare to. So, I googled reverse mortgages, and Finance of America looked like the best product to compare to.

The mortgage process with Finance of America was all done over the phone and by email, and everything was sent by the broker. She did a very good job and got all the documents together. I reviewed them with the property owner. Then she signed them and sent them back. Then, they did the application process. She applied, got the reverse mortgage, and then we closed through a designated agent for the institution in Rhode Island. Every time anything is signed, there were notaries present. It was all done by the book, and all were executed thoroughly and completely. Everything was done through Monica who's a broker for the institution. She was very thorough, professional and knowledgeable, and she knew what she was talking about.

Randy is a great representative of Finance of America. The process was a bit longer than refinancing, which I've done about three times in the past. There's a good reason for it. It's more serious and more sincere. Even to where the appraiser comes in and appraising the house is different than just refinancing. They're much more particular. Waiting for everything to come to a close, Randy worked through that with me as fast as they could. It did work out okay and just as fast as normal refinancing, but there was more entailment like I had to sign a lot more documents and go through a training class with someone in Virginia over the HUD reverse mortgage thing.
Randy is not so sophisticated she can't be understood. She's always attainable. Rarely I can't call her. If I don't get ahold of her, she’s gonna call back. I have high remarks for Randy. She's always there. She stayed with me through thick and thin. The rates are fine. I took the five-point plan instead of this lump sum because I didn't need the money. I just needed some advance borrowing for upkeep in the house for the future. Everything was fine. Although I wish I could have locked in earlier when we started because it would have saved me half a point, it's not a big deal.
Working with Finance of America has given me a lot more financial reassurance and peace of mind. For anybody who's looking into it, if you got a lot of money to retire with, then I wouldn't think reverse mortgage is necessary. But if you're living paycheck to paycheck on your social security, this is something you probably want to look into because it gives you a much more comfortable life after age 70.

Dawn was very helpful and knowledgeable. She'd also text back immediately and say, "I'm on another call. I will call you as soon as I can." Usually, within one day or two days, if I called her late in the day, she would always respond with a direct call and she was very accessible to whatever questions I had. I didn't do a lot of research on a home. There are two kinds of reverse mortgages and she tried to tell me about them. I don't understand how it worked, but what I read and with what she did, made me feel very confident, and that was why I did it and I'm very happy I did it. The only thing I'm really aggravated about is that counseling session, which was 150 bucks. I don't know why I had to do it and that was a waste of money, in my opinion. I think that was a scam. But everything else with Dawn and Finance of America was very legitimate and very thoroughly explained to me.

The process that I went through was pretty simple. I already had all of the information so it was pretty easy for me. I got the customer service that I looked for. I was treated very good, and very kindly. Everything was pretty much explained to me. It was more of a pleasant atmosphere than I had with a previous company. My interaction with Connie was fantastic. She was very informative. When I sent the package up, I put all the information in an envelope and then I got a phone call a couple of days after I put it in FedEx, which was pretty quick. Connie said they were missing something. So, I scanned it and sent it to her, and the process was real quick after that.

I had applied to Finance of America earlier, and then I withdrew it because I didn't like the appraisal on the house. I waited four months and then reapplied. My questions were answered and there were no surprises. The rep tried to make the process simple. The reverse mortgage is really helpful in and of itself. But as far as working with Finance of America, I feel like I got about the best deal you can get as far as the amount of dollars that ended up out of the process. They're limited by law. It seems like there are a lot of things that are similar and are governed by the rules as far as the fees go. Although, I felt like the fees and how they handled it were better with Finance of America and that I was looking at things like the appraisal fee. So, I felt that I didn't come away feeling like I could have done better somewhere else.
Five months ago when I first applied, I lined up everybody with what they did and asked them questions and David knew his stuff better than the other guys did as far as being able to answer questions and make sense and be consistent in his answers. So, I felt confident that I was dealing with a good company. As far as the rate and terms, Finance of America was a little more reasonable than AAG.

I called Finance of America Reverse and spoke to a customer service agent. They connected me with a loan officer, Kevin, and we went through the process from there. The application and underwriting process took three months and I was fine with the process. It was just a matter of getting things done on time. Kevin was great and always reaching out in case something was needed. He really was great throughout the whole process. I was happy that he was our loan officer. I had a pleasant experience.

The application and the underwriting process didn't take that long but the appraisals took approximately two months. That aside, the application process was straightforward and not difficult. Finance of America Reverse was 100% good. The lady that I dealt with was Amber and she was very helpful and always available. She was easy to talk to and answered all the questions. Finance of America Reverse has impacted my life greatly because I have some money now and that takes all the stress out of my life.

We were happy with Finance of America. We liked the rep a lot. He ended up being from our home state in Indiana, so we got along real good. He kept us informed throughout the whole thing, and couldn't ask for a better situation. It was smooth and easy to deal with. Andrew was the guy we used. I highly recommend using him if you can, because he is amazing. And he's a veteran. He fought for our country, and he fought for us on this thing. He's the greatest. I ended up getting a better rate than I thought we would get. Because we had looked through our bank and a couple of other things, and this ended up being better.

It was a multi-step process. Finance of America requested the documentation that we had with all of our previous payments of what we wanted to have taken care of and help to get us on a more sound financial basis. I'm retired now and I want to be sure that we're not getting into financial trouble, and Finance of America had a favorable process and result for us. It took a couple days back and forth, getting the documentation that was requested, extra things that we needed. And step-by-step we were able to send over what was needed. The hardest thing was I don't have a fax machine at home, so I had to get a lot of email stuff sent over. That was the easiest way for us to do it.
Dana was very helpful, friendly, step-by-step, thorough with getting stuff to start to finish. She was thoroughly familiar with the process and can answer our questions very smooth and easily. I was happy with it. The rate is very favorable. The terms are good. It will help to take the financial pressure off, because everything is more and more costly and it's getting more difficult by the day. But this helps to give us breathing room.

We found Finance of America Reverse and thought our problems were solved. The main reason we got the loan was to pay off back taxes on a construction loan so we can continue putting money into the house. The guy who set it up, Ryan, was really great but something happened between him and the actual payout. They didn't make one of the payments they were supposed to make and that was part of the agreement. Now, we're kind of scrambling to find out what's going on before our house gets repossessed. I have talked to somebody and I'm going to give him a callback and find out what's going on. I contacted him almost two weeks ago and haven't heard back from him. I'm not too pleased at this point.

The rate we received this time is much better than what we previously had. Also, the young man that helped me and my husband through this was very thorough and he was open at any time for questions. If we had any more questions or wanted to do any more, we would ask for the same representative. Overall, we're pleased with redoing the reverse mortgage.

The lady at Finance of America was very friendly and knowledgeable. Her name was Cecilia and she did stuff rapidly, as opposed to other companies. She also seemed to be helpful, professional, and responsive every step of the way. But the process took a longer time, overall, than I had expected. It took three months from start to finish and I didn't understand what was taking so long. But the application wasn't bad. Cecilia gave me a list of information I needed and I provided it for her.
Then, we had to have two home inspections because they didn't like the first one that was done and that delayed things for 60 days. The appraisal process was laborious. Then once that was done, what seemed to take forever was the underwriting. It was a little frustrating because every time I called, the only person I could get in touch with was Cecilia, although, other people were responding to me in email form. It seemed to be a straightforward loan, and it went on and on and on. But ultimately, it was fine and they did what they said they did. In the long run, I was very satisfied with the whole process and I got what I wanted.

Rob, my loan officer, was really good. The only thing was I had a living trust and when they made out the check, they made it out to me, my wife, and the living trust. But in order to cash that check, I had opened up a new account with my bank, which I have several already. I called Rob and he had them reissue the check just in my wife and my name.

The loan officer was a sweetheart. She did everything humanly possible. But as we got past her, everything was a problem. I was asked for the same documents five times.

When I first began the process of getting a reverse mortgage in late 2019, I was blessed by the cyber gods because I was connected with mortgage specialist Reginald **. He led me through the steps and decisions needed with patience, good humor, and expertise. He was able to provide all the information I needed to make a decision which has since proven to be one that is working well for me. During that time I contacted him frequently, and I could always count on him for information that I could understand. His pleasant personality and kindness made the project easier than I would have expected. Today I again contacted Mr. ** with some questions about my mortgage, and once again he was knowledgeable, pleasant, and able to provide the information I needed. I hope that Finance of America Reverse knows how fortunate they are to have this young man on their staff.

The process took a long time. There were a lot of discussions relative to various projected fees and costs where I thought they were out of line. I probably caused some of the delays because I didn't agree with some of the good faith estimates that were put down there. We got an appraisal and we didn't agree with it. We got a second one, which was higher, and they went with the lower one, which makes no sense at all. Also, I feel as though my attorney was not provided with the closing documents in a timely fashion for her to review. They scheduled the closing and she got the package the night before the closing so we, as client and customer, did not have an opportunity to go over it. But the rep I worked with, Julie, was fine and experienced. She was responsive to my questions and answered them in a timely fashion.

Unfortunately, the appraiser is an independent nonaffiliated third party. They do not work for us and due to compliance regulations we do not communicate with them or contract them ourselves. The FAR rep was great. We really liked working with her. We refinanced our regular mortgage a couple of times. They're all intensive depending on the 80/20 split equity on your house. It seemed to go on a little bit longer than a regular mortgage refinance. But when they finally had what they needed, it went really fast. We had some misunderstandings though. It really wasn't that clear to us what we were going to be responsible for. They also wanted a second appraisal. We didn't realize that we are going to have to pay all of that too. The first appraisal was 315,000 and the second appraisal was 338,000. So they have to, on FHA, stick with the lower. That was quite a bit of a chunk of money.
In the end, we finally found that the money that we were going to get was not what we thought. Because we had to pay ahead. At that point, they said, “It’s within 90 days.” So we had to collect not only this payment but the next check payment. That was all left to the very end when things were actually going through. They should be a little more clear about what was going to be in the mortgage, what was gonna have to be at the closing, what was going to be rolled up in the mortgage and what was going to have to be paid at the end. If we knew the appraisal was really going to be ours to pay, we might have paid more toward it.

They were very accommodating compared to other companies that I started out dealing with. Their application process wasn't difficult. I've done refinances on my house in the past and it was more difficult than doing this. The rep I worked with was very friendly and as good as it can get. Very accommodating. He was reassuring and honest with me. He told me exactly what I needed to do, what I was to expect, and told me what the process was about, and any questions I had, he was available to answer them.

Finance of America Reverse was very truthful and upfront with everything, better than Quicken Loans. I've had nothing but good experiences with them. I liked what the rep was doing. She answered my questions straight out. What she told me, she didn't go around the bush about it. Everything was up above. We had a few little hiccups here and there because I didn't quite understand some of the paperwork or how to do it. So I had to go back and ask the rep and she explained it to me. As far as the application, it went well. My wife and I are both happy. There was one little problem. They had a little hiccup in their computer somewhere and they gave the wrong amount. But other than that, everything was fine. We got it straight, got what we were told and didn't have any problems.

The process with Finance of America Reverse was easy. I just had to get approved, pay the origination or the fee that started the whole ball rolling, and then give them all of my information and paperwork on the house that I bought. A little difficult at the beginning, because I'm older and I had to scan things on my computer and tried to get them there. Then they started doing some FedEx stuff, which was quick and easy. It was appraised higher, which is great and then, finished it. Glad I did it. The rep I talked to was also very nice and helpful. The rates were good and they explained it really well, too.

I had great offers. In the last year, I would average three to four phone calls a week trying to get me to refinance with them but I decided to stay with Finance of America. The Finance of America Reverse rep, Miranda, was very helpful. In the end, after I narrowed it down to the two options that I thought were the best, one of the factors that excited me with Finance of America was the confidence I had in the information that she had given me compared to that with some with others, and the comfort level I had working with her. I got lots of information, all my questions answered, and I had it given to me in a form where I could easily make comparisons with others, and I never got the impression that I was being high-pressured.

The person that we worked with made it extremely easy for us. Toby was very good at his job. He was very good at explaining everything to us. If we had a problem or didn't understand something, we could call him any time and he was always there. The counseling was also really good for us, listening to him and understanding everything he was saying. It was also very fast. We started in December and it was done by February.

First, I dealt with this guy named Joe. He retired recently. Then Julie. They were very supportive. My husband died seven and a half years ago. I talked about being in the house and having a caregiver. And they understood. If you're a senior, and I don't know if you're a senior, but if you have money to travel and do what you want and not have to worry about your house, that's one thing. My husband had brain cancer for seven and a half years. And he was home. I wouldn't put him in a home. So, I had care. And care costs money.
I had to go through like a schooling when I first got the reverse mortgage. People don't understand reverse mortgages. So, Finance of America explained it to me. They're not trying to take my money. They're trying to help the seniors. And they do help the seniors, but that 60% is a killer. But houses now, they're crazy. Finance of America was wonderful. I had no mortgage on the house, and I didn't wanna leave my house right now. My husband bought me this house 35 years ago. To sell it and leave and move into an apartment in Bergen County in New Jersey, a two-bedroom apartment is 3,000 without utilities. It’s ridiculous. There's a bus down the street that takes you to New York. There's a school a block away. It's a good neighborhood. But you never know where you're gonna move to.

The first time I applied for a reverse mortgage, it took a long time and it was tedious. We discovered that we couldn't do it because my husband owned a piece of property and that guy didn't know what to do about that. We went to another company, and they did it. Then I refinanced. And by that time, it was with Finance of America. This is my third time going through this, and I know it's a long, drawn out process. I had purchased two houses in my life also. And all that kind of thing takes a long time. It's the paperwork and the legalities. I would recommend that people check into getting a reverse mortgage, because I believe that it is a good thing. Unless you're concerned about keeping your house after you die, and I'm not. So, it's a good thing.

We did the reverse mortgage right when FHA changed how high the loans would be. It was 800,000 in 2021, and in January 2022, it went to 900,000. I talked to my guy in the Finance of America Reverse and he said they have to do another application if they're going to use the new rates. That's the only thing that I didn't like. But so far, so good, especially the guy that I dealt with. He was very knowledgeable about the whole process, had very good communication, and responded very fast to my questions. If anybody wants to do a reverse mortgage, that's the way to go with them.

Finance of America Reverse's work was not very well performed. They made mistakes on the first attempt, and that cost me four months’ worth of time. By the time the second one started, it was a good deal less attractive. I would have preferred the rate that they offered in the beginning because it was less. I was angry that they dropped the ball with regard to the lock period and with regard to the appraisal. There was maybe a week where I didn't get information to them because I was out of town, but I didn't find out that I had expired the mortgage until a month after it had already lapsed. Nevertheless, they have a good product if you're tough.

We had to take a class and get a certificate signed by Finance of America Reverse. There were lots of paperwork. We just refinanced a reverse mortgage so that was even a lot more paperwork. Ryan, the rep, helped us and went through every single thing with us. He was so patient. It took a longer time because I had to find so many things to submit but he was wonderful. We ended up with a lot of money and next year, we'll end up with even more money. So, we can use that for other different things instead of being stuck in our house. We’re able-bodied and we feel good. My husband’s gonna be 80 and I’m 76, and we’re gonna live out the rest of our life in this house. Finance of America Reverse did great.

The process was more lengthy than anyone on their end and on my end. It became complex because of the way my house is set up in terms of ownership and the paperwork that is involved. I was so frustrated with the length of time that this was taking but I’m glad that I wound up with Finance of America. Richard answered a lot of questions that we sent him right from the beginning. He would call me every Friday and if I had any questions about anything, I could ask him. If he didn't know the answer, he'd get it for me and call me back. I liked it from the beginning that it wasn't just a standard call and standard questions. It was more like, "Let's see what we can do here." It was kind of a long process to get it down but once we figured out how it was going to work to get it qualified, Richard worked on it quite a bit.

The process was a little more easy to do with Finance of America Reverse compared to the company that I started with. But after we got seriously into the process, they brought in stuff that had nothing to do with what we were trying to accomplish. There was an issue with another property but we weren't financing or doing anything with that property yet they held it against us. They should stick to the matter at hand and not other stuff that didn't apply. Like me, my rep was also confused in why, how come, and what for.
We already had our appraisal done. We were nearing towards the end of the closing, and all of a sudden, I got this phone call that we needed to have the property revisited. Finance of America Reverse said there were tornadoes that came through Tennessee, and they wanted to make sure there was no damage to the property. I told them there may be tornadoes that come through Tennessee, but there's none that come through where I live. They didn't want to take my word for it. They had to send somebody back out there to do it which slowed the process down.

The application process with Finance of America Reverse took three months but we weren't in a big hurry because the house was in the build stage. I had the money to put money down because we sold another house when we were living with my daughter. The rep was in California but he usually responded back when I had a problem. You have to send all this info on how much money I’ve got or gonna have. It was frustrating at some point because the house was worth that much and they were covered and they were loaning only 60% of the value so they couldn’t lose. But that’s not the rep’s fault nor Finance of America Reverse nor the underwriter.
The worst part was we paid 3.96 for the house and the appraisers appraised it for less than what we paid. When the home was almost built a month before we were gonna close, our builder offered me 70,000 more than our original bill was because people were dying and coming from out of town that wanted to buy the house. He said he would give me 70,000 more for what I paid and that he would build me one just like it for 4.20. So that'd come out about 50,000 a head. But it would take another 9 to 10 months. We didn't want to stay with my daughter for 9 or 10 more months, so I said no.
I had the cash to buy the house and it was sitting in stock. I told my staff that I was done with this Finance of America Reverse. I've always learned that all these people say that their biggest asset is their house. But for me, it makes me no money. I eventually borrowed money because of my financial advisors. They told me that what we were gonna do was borrow the money against my stock and use that to pay for the house. Then when I got the money from Finance of America, pay that loan off. So that's what we did.
It was two loans because I got two separate accounts of stock. They gave me 1.25 to begin with and I paid off one of the loans. I still owe another 110,000 but Finance of America says I only got 90 more coming. And you can't get all the money at once. You got to wait a year and then I can draw the rest. I'm gonna get my own appraiser and Finance of America better come in at a better pricing and pay at least what the loan is off, if not a little more money. Or I'll pay off Finance of America, and I'll get some of that. I'll go back to AAG or somebody with a decent appraisal.

What we really liked about Finance of America was that they don't sell the loans. They keep it in-house. Also, the guy we worked with was the best. If we sent an email or called, he'd return it right away. And he was very personable. It’s like we lost a best friend once we closed the deal.

Chuck ** gave me the best sales talk I've ever heard. I was already with another company in Maryland and things weren't moving very fast. When he called, I didn't know they own Settle Inc. also. Settle Inc. had been handling our account and that was part of his sale. "So, if you're not happy and you're just getting started, this is the time to change. Since we own Settle Inc., we know all about you and I can give you a discount or maybe even eliminate the setup charges. And other companies would have to charge." I said, "Sounds good." He was very good at first.
But it was a mess. We had innumerable problems. This took many months. He rarely ever returned a phone call for me. It just didn't happen. I'd go for three weeks not having any idea what's happening. Then, once, he was in the hospital. At the end of that period, he called me and said, "I'm out now." Nobody else ever told me that or said that they could help me. It was just like, "Leave him a voicemail." I did that all the time, but I didn't get returns and nobody ever offered to pick it up. No one ever said anything about the fact that he wasn't available. I complained to two other people that I wasn't getting calls back and nobody ever offered to help. I changed my mind pretty quickly about the company. I would never recommend Finance of America Reverse to anybody.
Eight months, they missed two deadlines. At one point, they said, "We got it done now. We'll be closing tomorrow." I said, "Tomorrow?" Then, I had to call back, he said, "No. It turns out Texas has a short limit, not like any other state and we missed it. So, we've got to do this over again. You have to get counseled again." We were put off three times. But none of those was my fault. I was sitting here trying to get things going. I had a discussion with one person who had worked with Chuck and he was really very helpful. But they moved him to another job. So, at the very end, we've been through this for 10 months. It was crazy.

She was friendly and she seemed concerned. She seemed very educated about it, knew what she was doing. The whole process was a lot of work. It was very detailed. But everybody was good, except for one notary that came over and she was rude. But the next notary that came was very good.

The process of doing the reverse mortgage was not what I expected because I had gotten a reverse mortgage years before and the people just came to my house and we signed papers. We didn't have to do anything by mail. But the process was okay and it turned out good. Also, Randy was really nice and helpful. I enjoyed working with her. Finance of America is a good company.

So far, they've been great. My rep Toby would be what we would consider in HR to be a first-round draft pick. He's one of those top 2% or 3% of employees who has a very nice blend of personal and professional skills and is able to incorporate them together in a very effective way. Finance of America required two home appraisals, but I fully understand the reason for doing that. Everything they did was right on and the timing was superb. We were very fortunate to have been paired with Toby. The local notary we had on both occasions turned out to be an exceptional individual also. Our already optimistic expectations were exceeded so we were really thrilled.

We had delays because the appraisers are backlogged. It took three and a half months. But I'm very happy with the service of Finance of America Reverse. The loan officer kept in touch and we moved it along. I did it using power of attorney, which I guess is not that common, but we worked through it. There is one thing, though, I'm not sure about is once you get the mortgage, there's no contact of as to "How do I manage my account from here?" I haven't received any information. It's been about a week. I don't know if the property tax has been paid. I don't know what my line of credit is. I feel like I'm in the dark on the after loan service. The other thing is, it looks like the set-aside account for taxes and insurance on the house was deducted from the line of credit amount. We have 30,000 less in our line of credit. I thought it was a separate account. It would have been nice to know that. That makes a big difference in planning.

From the beginning, it was not working very well. I wanted to give up. The first agent was very slow and had no response to me every time I asked a question. It took a while until the new agent took it over. We had to start all over and Scott helped me out a lot. He always tried to have me to do as soon as possible. He is the best and I love to work with him.

It took about a year to get this through because my ex-wife's name was on the other reverse mortgage and she wouldn't sign. But I talked to Dawn all the time, between her and me and my son, we finally got her to sign it off. I thought maybe that they would dump me but they stuck with me.

The first appraisal was very high, and I was pleased with that. FHA decided they need a second opinion, so they insisted on doing a second appraisal, which came in lower. But it was a great deal more than last year, so I went with the lower appraisal. The rep, Scott, did an excellent job and was there even when he went to Mexico for a wedding. He made it very clear that he was available whenever. He was caring, and there was a nice mix of humility and business. He tended to repeat himself three or four times to make sure that I got a basic message. That says a lot for the company's selection process and their focus on the human as well as the financial skills. But Finance of America Reverse could help deal with the government. That's bigger than any one of us can deal with.

The application process with Finance of America Reverse was very straightforward and easy to maneuver. We were able to do everything online via email so it simplified everything. The process was rather lengthy but there were several things that needed to be addressed. I had a reverse mortgage in the past so we knew the procedure and I didn't have any discomfort with any of the processing. Barbara, the rep, was very tolerable and she was very efficient in getting things lined up and keeping me abreast of what was going on too, so it was okay.
Everything went along smoothly until the whole thing was turned over to what Barbara called underwriters. Then, those underwriters wanted all of the same information all over again. So, I don't understand why they couldn't just take it from her records as I had given it to her the first time around. It seemed redundant to me. The lending process took three months and I didn't expect it to take this long this time. Otherwise, everything was like it would be. Barbara contacted me almost on a daily basis until she knew that the underwriters had all the information that they needed. She was very helpful with it all. She was awesome.

The rep explained the process to me that I would draw more interest on it. I decided to go with Finance of America again and the only difficult part was the appraiser. He put down that I had a water well above the cistern but I don't. It took forever to get that off the paperwork before they finally okayed it.

The reps were fantastic. But here's the problem with the reverse mortgage. The first time around, we had to sit down and sign paperwork after paperwork. The second time around, a guy came out to the house and that was good instead of going out someplace and spending three hours signing papers back and forth. It's insanely silly. It makes no sense to me why I had to sign hundreds of documents. But I’d imagine with time, there's gonna be less and less of that because the second time around, there was less. Finance of America Reverse is definitely going in the best direction. From the first time around, the paperwork received was good. The second one's even better, and the fact that I can go on the internet now and do things is much better. There's a whole bunch of mail that I’ve received over the years from other companies, but Finance of America did a fantastic job.

The process was time-consuming but it went through alright. The rep, Scott, was really good. He kept informed minute to minute on what was going on. I had to get some paperwork together, which took me some time so it took a month to get it all wrapped up. Otherwise, it was good. As a matter of fact, I just got a check from the title company saying that they had been paid too much by $180.
Scott went different ways. might want to do another of their own appraisals. It came down and, no, they were happy with that. Scott was a professional and he knew what he was doing. He went different ways. He says, "You could go and give more money, but it would go into a 4%, or you can get this much money for a 1%." But if I went with the higher percentage, that means that I would have had to pay my taxes and my house insurance for 10 years, which is going to knock me down a lot. I ended up going with a deal where my insurance is paid already 'til October this year. So, I didn't have to worry about that. And my taxes are $800 I got to pay by April and startup's no biggie. Otherwise, it went pretty smoothly.

The experience with Finance of America Reverse was disappointing. I already had a reverse mortgage for 15 years so, we went through the whole mess many years ago and been very happy. I didn't realize because the valuation of the homes has gone up that I could get another one. The big problem was that it took so long. I understand how things are and especially with the bug going around and all that circumstances, but still, it was too long of a process, especially since I’m already one. I understand they have to treat it as though it's new, but they’re dealing with very experienced people here with reverse mortgage. For people with our age and circumstances with our family, it's a very good thing for us. And we're a proponent of it.
Towards the end, the was rep not calling back or following through, which caused a couple of major hiccups. But then we got the money and he was honest about the money, too. We knew we couldn't get that much because we live in a retirement community. It's age-regulated, gated and therefore, it narrows the class of people that could buy our homes. You have to be 55 or older and no kids are allowed. But the spokesman that Finance of America has for reverse mortgage is a good one and if somebody is interested, they would look into it.

The representative was very helpful but sometimes they're not on the same page with the other departments. She told me one thing and said that she had to check first or that a department was going to handle it and I got to go through them. It seemed like there are different roads to go through or different departments to talk to. I started the process back in June and I didn't get my money until November. It took a little bit longer than it should have and for the money that I paid. There was $14,000 in fees and I should have gotten my money much sooner. The fees are rather ridiculous and you've got to wait a year before you're allowed another amount of money. It’s bewildering that I can't get it all upfront at once because they've got the lien on the property.

My rep Dawn was very professional. She was knowledgeable and she followed up. I'd leave a voicemail and she would get back to me really quickly. She would send me a text and leave me a voicemail. The process was shorter than AIG's which had so much paperwork. The closing was great. They came in a timely manner. Dawn came on her own time during the holidays because we missed an initial. The notary came also and he was over and above. I was very happy Dawn and with my experience with Finance of America. I got what I needed.

Working with Finance of America Reverse was very organized and fairly quick given all of the hoops that I had to jump through. The refi was very simple and the rep who helped me was very good and he helped me a lot. My husband thought he was crazy when he said how much our house was worth, but it came in at that amount. The mortgage was reduced quite a bit and the interest rate was lower.

The application process with Finance of America Reverse was muddy, asking questions going back 50 years. And we had to send a lot of stuff a second and third time. Because maybe one underwriter asked for it and somebody else took over and didn’t get it. Everything they did was extremely slow. The lady that was handling affairs was very good and I was very happy with her. She was as frustrated as we were. We had an appraisal on the house but Finance of America didn't like the appraisal. They wanted a second one. So, I got dinged for another 500 bucks for a second appraisal. When they finally decided to close, everything was handled in a timely manner but it took so long to get to that point.

Finance of America Reverse was very good on my mom’s reverse mortgage. Tim, the rep, was courteous and supportive all the way. We ran into a couple of snags and the whole process took longer because we had to clear up the title. But it was not on Finance of America. The title company could have done a better job drafting up some of the draft. We had to get a lien removed on a private mortgage and some of the drafts had some errors in there. Tim kept following through and helping me with the whole thing. We did as much as we could online but it was clunky that Finance of America had to send somebody out for signatures. But it must be a requirement of the law.
Another person inside the Finance of America put a tag on the back end that outside of the house has to be painted, and I didn’t appreciate that. I tried to argue with Tim. Some chipping paint is a little bit less value for the house but it's not something that's a condition that had to have a tag to follow up on. They pushed it out to April but Massachusetts doesn't get warm until April.

The application with Finance of America Reverse was a lengthy process but it was good because it was a lot of money taking place. They didn't hold back on anything. If they said I was going to get something, the next day, it was in my mailbox. I’m very satisfied with them. The person that I dealt with made me feel like an old friend. He kept me informed even on the bad stuff. If there was something that happened or if there was a delay, he gave me a call. He was extremely helpful.

We were very pleased overall with the service and pricing we received from Taylor ** and Finance of America - Reverse. I did my research online on consumer sites before I went with Finance of America. There were three major companies, but the most important thing for me was who was I working with, were they experienced, and the reputation of the company. It was people who had used the company and said, "Yes, they were professional, they got back to me, I always had access to the person helping me with the process, and they knew what they were doing."
Originally, Finance of America assigned me a different agent, but I rejected that agent and went with someone who had high reviews online. The person I selected was not licensed in Nevada, but she referred me Jason who is in Indiana. I know Finance of America has new people that they're trying to help them build their business and make money, have their commission base, but as a consumer, the reviews that I read online were important to me in making a choice of who to work with. We worked with Jason and he did a great job for us. He really kept an eye on things, and I'm a person too that I knows where my records are. If he requested something, I was able to get it to him in a very timely fashion. It was a good experience for both of us.
We went with the variable interest rate, but I would still like to go over the interest rates with Jason. As a consumer, when you're choosing which interest rate you want to go with, it is still a little confusing in our economic climate today because there's so much uncertainty. I still need to go online and register our account and do a couple of things. But I know that I have access to Jason, and at any time I can call him. If I need more information or I want to go over things, he will be there for me to do that.

Mike was such a gentleman and he was so easy to work with. He guided us through every step. It's pretty complicated and there were little things that weren't signed or had to be done again. But for what we got out of it, we will do it 10 times again. Also, there's peace of mind that I knew the value of our home had gone way up. It was a good deal and I was happy with everything.

All the people that we dealt with through the whole process were great, especially Toby who was our agent. We had a lot of questions and there were a couple of times that I got upset at him because I didn't think that things were going as quickly as they should have. But he explained the process to us and he was very patient. Also, he made himself available 24/7. There were times that I called him at 8:00 or 9:00 in the evening when we had a question and he helped us. Overall, everything worked out fine and the rates were very competitive with everybody else.

I called Finance of America Reverse and I said, “Do you all take care of reverse mortgages? Could you put me in contact with one of your salespeople?” And they said, “Well, we don't have salespeople. We have professional lenders." I said, “Well, that works too.” So, they put me in contact with this lady who helped me. Took a long time, but we did it. I said, “Why did they put me with you?” She said, “Well, they refer people that are hard to deal with to me.” I asked if that included me and she said, “Yes. I deal with doctors and accountants. And even I deal with architects.” I’m an architect. “And these are people that think they know everything.” I wanted to work with somebody that understood what I wanted or needed, and would work with me to achieve that goal, which we did. It was thorough. It took 90 days.
What people don't understand is there are federal laws that tell the lender what their abilities are. I'm very lucky. They bet on 83 year olds, and I happen to live in a very upscale neighborhood. I have a beautiful piece of property. The person I worked with started out by explaining the game plan. “This is how it works.” And it cut through a lot of expectations and wasted time. We got on a rhythm about when I should call her, and it worked out fine. Once we realized that she had a busy day and I have a busy day, we found a time. Indianapolis, which I did not know when we started all this, is on Eastern Time Zone. I'm on Central Time Zone. We finally figured that out too. I would have an idea and she would have hers, and she had to go back and talk to her bosses, which I respect. It wasn't seamless, but it was easy. I've already talked to people about my experience. I recommended her and gave them the telephone number.

Finance of America's process was very efficient. I talked to a couple of different ladies, and they were both very professional, nice and helpful. If I asked questions, they were really helpful. We had an appointment with one lady that we had a pre-appointment with over the phone and we missed that appointment because we didn't have all the information we needed. There was a list of questions that we had to answer and information that we had to have available to us right away, and I missed that. The lady said, “No problem, we'll reschedule you for another day.” Then that lady could not make it that particular day. We had another lady that helped us.
The whole experience with Finance of America was really positive. Compared to a lot of other real estate transactions I've had before, it was a lot faster and a lot more expedient. Maybe it might have been because I knew a lot about what was going to be needed in the process because I've been through it so many different times. I also read up on the reverse mortgage situation extensively before we even approached Toby at Finance of America. He was extremely helpful. He was not high-pressure at all. He laid out all the information that I pretty much expected and kind of knew already. They sent us quite a bit of information. The overall impression I get from them is that they really know what they're doing, and we're very happy with the situation.

I had called Finance of America Reverse, and then Katie called me. I gave her all the information that she needed, and she has been wonderful. When I have questions, I always had her card and then I could call her. She would answer and if she didn't answer, I'd leave a message, and she called me back quickly. She knew the answers to the questions that I had. When I heard something on TV about interest rates going down, I said, “Could we refinance and get more money out of our home?” She said, “Check into it.” She said that it would be best to wait until a certain point when the interest rates were really low. This last spring, she said, “Now is a good time if you wanna do that.” Then she sent us papers to fill out. She sent return envelopes, so we could return them to her really quickly. So, the process went really smoothly and quickly.
We couldn't ask for a better person than Katie. We loved her. She tried to help us every way she could. I had seven surgeries this year and we had to buy a lot of medical equipment for my house, and it made me feel better. We also had a lot of money now still with them just sitting there. Then I don't have to worry about the future. We're not paying a whole bunch for the interest part that we paid, but the interest that we're getting is higher than it was on the money that is sitting there. Katie did it really good for us. We felt really secure in working with her. When we said we wanted to get some more money out of our house because the price of our house increased so much, she even did an estimate about how much our house was worth now. When the appraiser got done, she was almost spot-on in what the appraiser appraised it for. She had a good idea of what it was worth. She has knowledge of those things.

Refinancing through Finance of America was good. It did take a long time because of the government restrictions and requirements. So, it had nothing to do with them. It's just the process. It took seven months. The government required two appraisals, and that was what took a long time because the appraisers are very busy. Also, to get somebody to come out where we live is not that easy because we got a custom-built home. It's not a cookie-cutter home, so it's hard to get comps. The Finance of America rep was top-notch. She knows her stuff. We wouldn't have done the refinance if the rate wasn't better than what we had. It worked out fine.

I enjoyed working with the rep, Ryan. You couldn't get anybody better than him. He was easy to get ahold of, talked to me about everything, went through everything with me and helped me a lot. We had a difficulty and my sister had a judgment against the property. Ryan advised me on how to handle that 'cause he went through it before. He was great and kept in touch with me all the time to let me know what was going on almost daily. He told me approximately when things were gonna happen. They happened on time and everything went perfect. I felt good about the rate too. My sister got a couple of things for the house, had them put in and that helps her a lot.

I was more impressed with Finance of America's mailing and when I talked to them, I realized I made the right decision. The application process was an enormous amount of paperwork but the agent who was helping, Nicole, clarified it all for me. She answered all my questions and explained where I needed an explanation. The application process took several months. It seemed like every time I had to do something, it was, "Well, we can't do that this month. We're gonna do it next month." It turned out well though. I was ultimately very pleased I did it and I'm very comfortable with it now. I got some documents in last week. It was a notice of my mortgage being paid off.

The process was informative as as far as briefing me on all that I had to consider. after I finished with them, I was told that I would be contacted by a counselor from the government. They were also informative. I had worked in real estate before so I understood most of the stuff they were talking about. The only thing that I was disappointed in was that it was totally unnecessary to have to get a second appraisal. AAG had sent me a letter in the mail saying that my home was worth about 200,000. And I went on Zillow and they were saying about 165,000. I contacted Finance of America to see what will come of it wall and in so doing, they said, "You're gonna have to get counselled, you're gonna have to get an appraisal."
I got the counselling and the appraisal and I'm sitting on pins and needles waiting to see what the appraisal was gonna because I was speculating between this 200 and this 165. But in my mind, I'm thinking 125. So, the appraisal comes in and it was a little short of my figures that Finance of America gave me as far as what I would have to put upfront out of my value to pay for my bad credit, taxes and whatever else. I needed X amount of dollars to not have to bring anything to the closing and I came up short. I wish it got closer to my number because my goal is to just not have to pay my mortgage anymore and let my equity pay my mortgage through the time of my tenure with this reverse mortgage procedure.
So, they said, "Well, you're gonna have to get another appraisal." I said, "I'm good. I don't need a second appraisal because I understand everything and 155 is more than what I thought." But if I did get a second appraisal, there is a chance it could be higher, and then that'll be less money I'll have to bring to the closing. But I don't even want to risk that because 155 is good. With the federal government, I had to get a second appraisal and in so doing, I found out that the second appraisal was 154. So, I was right. Why even get a second appraisal if already knew that 155 was a good appraisal and now, that's another unnecessary $500 we had to spend.
Other than that, my rep was thorough. With my knowledge and her thoroughness, sometimes we would have a little conflict because there are some things I didn't think were necessary because I knew all about loan origination and underwriting. We had a little friction with that 'cause I'm trying to meet my deadline before the 31st of December. We started trying to close on the 18th of October and I didn't want to make another mortgage payment of $700. I said, "I hope we can close this before my next mortgage payment." And she did everything, pushed me, and got me to close before my next mortgage payment. So, I was happy with that and I was also happy with the fact that had she not pushed me in conceded to just let me turn this in and taking my word, "Hey, this is what I got. These are the facts." I'm not going to deny that I wasn't happy. I might have been a little bit too much into my ego and she was only doing her job. So, tone of voice might have been a little more aggressive on my end.
But I had one thing that the underwriters slowed the process down on and that was the fact that I have a living trust, and they wanted to verify that my other participant on the loan, which is my wife, had the right to beneficiary status. To verify it, we had to put it in a FedEx package and send it to Finance of America so their lawyers could look it over. They saw what we said was true and they sent it back to us. That was the only hiccup that we had and we closed. My process is done now, so I'm good. And when the rate rises up, anybody who's trying to get a reverse mortgage, their rate's gonna be higher than what my rates were.

The guy who was helping me didn't stay in touch with me and the process was crappy. I hated working with Finance of America Reverse. They didn’t charge me anything but it was the way everything was handled and the time. It took way too long to do. The appraiser and I became good friends, and I reached out to him because I kept getting told that it was something to do with the appraiser and him not responding. He said that he turned the appraisal in three weeks ago. But I was still getting the runaround that the appraiser needed to do something. It was not a good experience.

I can concentrate on the other stuff that I was doing. The only thing I didn't like was the appraiser because there were limits in what they can do no matter what. Finance of America Reverse had the best deal. The rep was very diligent and honest in getting everything done. Every little obstacle that we had as far as needing information, Finance of America expedited it as quickly as possible. Once everything got started, the whole thing was done within the timeframe that we hoped. The rate was a little high. But it's 6%, as opposed to where the other type of mortgage was half that. But everything worked out okay.

I had been with Finance of America Reverse for more than 10 years and I have a great deal of trust in them. I was comfortable talking with the people from Finance of America. But the application process for the reverse mortgage was cumbersome. It needs a little more effort for me to read it and to understand. The process itself was very lengthy from June until October. If the process was a couple of months shorter, then it would have been a better deal. But I succeeded in obtaining the loans from them. So, this is fine. The loan officer from San Diego has been really splendid. He was very kind and knowledgeable. I really appreciate it. I'm very definitely happy that I have gotten the loan.

We went through the application process and the appraisal. It looked like things were moving right along. But then, the underwriters found out it was for a divorce decree settlement. The problem was that they were worried they were going to take the second position on a payback. My house didn't qualify for enough to pay off the entire settlement, so I had to use some of my other resources. I had to go back and get all new releases of interest from my ex-wife and this was after they'd already had a claim deed signed. They asked for more releases from her.
After all of that, it came out in dribs and drabs. I only had 90 days to make good on the settlement or I would be up for 12% or 15% interest on the settlement. All of a sudden, this thing started dragging out. You'd give them the papers that they'd want, and then they'd come back with, "We need something else." Then finally, they said, "Well, we can't close the mortgage until you have paid off all of the other part and we get certified receipts that that's been done, and then we can go through it, the closure of the reverse mortgage."
All of a sudden, I had to change my pack and sell a bunch of stocks and get a Roth IRA cashed out and some other things. I had to go get all of the payments and the rest of the money to my ex-wife, and then make sure I had receipts for it and canceled checks. So, it was kind of a long drawn out process when it really didn't have to be. All I was asking for was a reverse mortgage, and suddenly, I had to satisfy all the other things that they wanted. But I was able to pay my part and get all the paperwork done, and then we went through the closing. I was happy with the person I dealt with at Finance of America Reverse. She was very helpful, but she was also kind of stymied by the whole process. She said she'd never had anything as tough as this to get to the end before. So it wasn't wonderful.

I was able to refinance and get a better rate, which is very good for me. Finance of America Reverse was pretty good and they were quite honest. Sometimes you don't know what's going on with these finance companies, but they seem to be pretty straight up all the way through.

I filled out the application, and they approved me, and they made the loan. There's a lot of confusion about reverse mortgages out there, but education is the key. I'm a retired Loan Manager, so it was easy for me to understand. But the average consumer is a little apprehensive about it. If they can get over the apprehension, it's a pretty good program.

We've had a reverse mortgage with them before, and the process this time was simple and pretty easy. We got about a 4% rate before and we got it down to 2, which reduced our mortgage insurance quite a bit. That was the good part of it.

I've had a great experience with them. They answered all the questions that I had and sent me all the paperwork with instructions on what to do with my loan. They also made me the best offer. They told me what kind of options I had, and then we decided on one. Every time I called, I got a real person. I didn't have any questions after closing because they answered all of them before. The rep answered whatever questions I had and made sure I understood. If I didn't, he sent me some information and showed it to me because I'm a visual person.

Mark was really terrific. He answered every question and returned calls right on time. He made everything really easy. I was very pleased. I had to make a decision of whether we're going to sell the house or stay here permanently. Mark was able to show me how to make that decision. The process went very smoothly. Every date that he gave me came and went perfectly.
There was only one little hitch when they sent out a person for notary to sign everything. She was a really bizarre human. She had all sorts of rules at the last minute. Twenty minutes before she got here, she sent us a list of things that we had to do. We couldn't touch anything. She insisted that we go outside and that we had to be six feet apart. Everything was wet out there but she decided that we had to go to this tiny little table that we had with two chairs, which was not six feet apart. So it was weird. It was really close.
She said that we couldn't touch anything on the table except what she gave us and then we had to clean our hands after every time we touched something. We were out there and then the sun came out and it was very hot. My husband was having a really hard time but she wouldn't let us go inside. It was a nightmare for almost two hours. But it turned out that she also didn't get everything correctly. I mentioned it to Mark and the next person he sent out was perfect.

Working with the reps from Finance of America Reverse was excellent. Compared to any other mortgage application, it probably went easier and smoother than others I've dealt with for regular loans. The rate and terms were higher than I would like it to be, but that's part of a reverse mortgage and they met the term conditions.

Finance of America Reverse seemed to have better interest rates and the person that assisted me, Amber, had up-to-date communication skills and keep me informed of each step of the process. I had a good representative working with me. Finance of America was just a much better company to work with. But there were several different circumstances that made the process a lot difficult. In the middle of the finance, we had a major forest fire here in California and were evacuated for over six weeks. The adjusters couldn’t get here and the highways were also closed. Other than that, having the reverse mortgage allowed me to not worry so much about every monthly payment.

The rep was fine until the end. He got sick, then it was a bit of a mess-up. But at least I know I stay put. Whereas before, I was up in the air. Also, I was able to do a few things I've been trying to save for like do some upgrading.

The experience after closing has been subpar. I got a packet that has our account number. I log into the Finance of America Reverse website on a contact us page, they have an email address, and I would prefer email for that kind of interaction. So, whenever I send an email to that email address, no one has ever replied. They always call back. Which is why I have an email address. Finance of America Reverse should just ditch their email address and keep a phone number. The other challenge is when I go to call back, it's a long, complicated menu of numbers to press and accounts to put in and I get put on hold. And one time, I sent a question, I sent an email. And they had me call the number that I would call if I was in default or behind. The person who answered the phone said, "Yeah. Let me transfer you because you're not in default or behind." So, that was a waste of time.
The main thing is the website is very simple, which makes sense for the company. It's very clean. But you have to dig through a lot of forms to figure out the best way to accomplish some given task. And that's not an intuitive way to give that information out. Also, HECMs are a new product as far as the United States is concerned. So, there were some parts of it that were different. Other than that, it went as expected. I'm a planner, so I have long range goals. So, the immediate impact is I don't have to make more interest in principal payment. That is significant.

We were able to get the money that we needed by redoing the mortgage. We got a better interest rate and our payment went down. Refinancing with them was no problem at all. I dealt with Chuck and he was more than helpful every step of the way. Finance of America would send attorneys here for signing. So, it was very hassle-free. It just took a bit longer than I anticipated.
But there were a few little snafus along the way which shouldn't have happened because they already had the records from this home and from us on file where they bought the mortgage from the first company we did the refinance with. Other than that, they were upfront with everything and I trusted them. Chuck was hands on and everything went smoothly.

Our experience with Finance of America Reverse was very good. The salesperson I was attached to walked me through the process. I went to counseling and then moved on. It took a little longer than we anticipated. ’Cause if somebody didn't sign something, the notary made some mistakes or had to go back and forth. But in general, they were very helpful. The most important thing is to be knowledgeable relative to the documentation you need. If we had it all prior to that, then it could have been a lot smoother. Then they also need to make sure that we don't have to keep coming back for something else. When I asked, "Will this be okay?,” the processor said, “Yeah, it'll be okay,” but then the underwriter said, “No. We need something else.” If the sales, processing and underwriting are on the same page, then it would be a lot easier.

I enjoyed working with Finance of America Reverse and Andrew was spectacular through the whole process. We had to get FHA approval first for the one-off and then we had to go through the appraisal. Everything was tracked and in terms of timelines, Andrew kept me posted. But between the title company and the attorneys involved, there was a lot of back and forth and it seemed like that took several weeks to get that resolved. That was the only thing that we felt like we were in kind of a black hole for a while. But Andrew did well and I've recommended Finance of America Reverse to a couple of folks.

We are not allowed to communicate with them directly, only through another third party so we have no influence on their results. All Finance of America was doing was refinancing an existing reverse mortgage. They kept on forgetting that I had already done one with them. The process for getting approved was terrible. All they trying to do was lower my rate because the rates were low and take advantage of the increased value of the home. They made the process take a long time.
When they finally did it, they did it wrong. They ended up putting the second home of my son instead of my home. Also, we had an existing once a month withdrawal from our refinance package and it's $4,000 a month. I still don't know whether we're getting that or not. This was a very poor experience. I wouldn't recommend them.

I spoke with their guy, Jason, and I felt he's as direct and honest as anybody I've ever met. He was brusque in some respects but he was extremely knowledgeable. Also, he did everything he said he was going to do and followed it up on time through every step. He kind of lead me to the end of it and it was handled very professionally. And it was explained extremely well that whatever the number comes to, times 10 years, I'm going to end up with a lot less equity if I chose to sell the house at that point in time. I went into the process very aware of that issue.

Andrew is one of the best loan officers I've ever met. He stayed on top of everything. When a person is this age and they're getting a new type of loan, it helps to have a very patient, kind, and considerate loan officer that really knows what he's talking about and will follow up and get the information you asked for in an extremely timely manner. He did everything. I had mortgages and a litigation situation that I told Andrew about and we worked through everything. There couldn't have been a more understanding professional and personal person to deal with. I am going to recommend him to anybody and everybody that I can. Finance of America Reverse should give him a huge raise and bonus and not let him leave.

Finance of America was very helpful. Their rep, Cynthia, explained everything so clearly and she answered all my questions. If I couldn't talk, she would call me back. She was just so accommodating and clever. She was very comfortable to work with and she didn't pressure me. She gave me options and let me decide. When I said the closing cost was really high, she lowered that. With the money I got, I'm getting everything fixed up. I'm gonna be getting an insurance policy that will cover the reverse mortgage when I die so I can leave the house to my granddaughter.

The process got very complicated, but they were able to explain to me exactly what they needed and I was able to do it. The rep knew exactly what she needed. Not everybody that applies qualifies for a reverse mortgage but she knew how to keep it moving. When you work with somebody that knows what they're doing, it makes it easy.

I was much more confident with Finance of America. I was previously working with another company that seemed a little fly-by-night. The loan officer that I used with Finance of America was more knowledgeable. The customer service is very good and I was very pleased. However, there was a delay. They were trying to get the appraisal from the previous company who was dragging their feet.

I liked the statements of Finance of America Reverse that came in the mail. They were clear, legible, and understandable. I availed of their service and the process from start to finish wasn't pleasant. I started it in July and it didn't end until last month. At one time, Finance of America Reverse couldn't understand the thing you have to go through for the counseling. For some reason, something was missing in my counseling session. They went all the way to HUD to try to figure this out. The counseling company and Finance of America Reverse breached their own standards by having to talk to each other to try to figure this out. In the end, they couldn't and had to start all over. That was a major issue and there were a couple of minor ones too.
Other than those, the woman I dealt with was wonderful. She was very genuine, funny, and trustworthy. Also, my new rates and terms were less expensive than the one I did over the years with private companies. I didn't deal with an agent this time. I enjoyed the savings that I had with a banking institution rather than a broker.

The representative I worked with was good. But there were some communication gaps because there was back and forth with my insurance company, State Farm, to finally get them to send the needed information to Finance America. State Farm said that the documents were submitted but a lady named Autumn from Finance of America was saying that they didn't have them. Come to find out, they did have the information. It took a month longer than it should to get funded. Autumn didn't tell me that they weren't responding or that there was some kind of miscommunication. We finally had to inquire and find out. We talked to both companies and got the ball rolling again. Other than that, Finance of America communicated to me almost all the things that they should have and they gave me all the paperwork. The money we got, in the end, wasn’t as much as I was hoping for but that’s just the way it is.

Finance of America got an appraiser that gave us the low ball so they didn't have to put anything out. The house next door sold a couple of weeks ago for $224,000 and it's smaller than ours. It has a one-car garage, there are no decks, no finished basement, and no fireplace. Ours was appraised at 138 even with the new 40-year roof, new carpetings, and new paint. I didn't like that. I worry that Finance of America gets an appraiser that works for them and you can't get your own appraiser. I looked at the homes that the appraiser compared and they were falling down junk with no garage.
We worked with a girl named Randy out of Indiana and she was nice. She tried to help us throughout. I told her about the low appraisal and she said the appraiser won't change it. We weren't happy. Recently, we decided to pay off the reverse mortgage and just own the house outright. But when we called to get a payoff amount, Finance of America won't give it to us. That's not right.
When comparing options for a reverse mortgage, know how much the adjustable rate can go up. When Finance of America gave us a rate, I thought it was a fixed rate. I found out before we closed everything that it was adjustable. They had said it can only go up to 1% a month. But it can go up to 6% from where it was. We got a letter from them stating, "If we find anything that ain't improved, we can tell you to do it or sell your house." I don't think anybody should be able to sell the house. That's part of the reason we are gonna just buy the whole thing out and pay off our mortgage. If people know that down the road, they might want to sell their house and they're gonna end up going at $5,000 or whatever closing costs. They're gonna lose that.

The loan officer was very good. He was very helpful and seemed to know exactly what we had to do. The terms are fine. Everything they said in the beginning, it came true. When the rep said it was gonna be three and a half months, it was just a little bit more. The process was very involved but it went okay.

The girl in New York was there for me along the way and I appreciated that. She works out of her home. So I could call her just about anytime. I tried to do this almost a year ago, and they refused it. There were three things that I had to meet and I didn't meet all three. In June, the girl called me and said, “Now that the houses have gone up in value, we should try again.” It took six months but we finally got it done. That in itself bothered me because Finance of America wouldn't do it the first time, but they did it the second time just because my equity was higher.
I didn't need the counseling, because I had it five years ago when I took out the loan in the first place. Also, some of these things that were required and then I had to pay out of my pocket to do, were unnecessary.

I liked working with Finance of America. I enjoyed it. They got the best interest rates. The sales representative, Aaron, was very competent, knowledgeable, helpful and responsive and answered my questions and calls. The only frustration I had is that the paperwork from the underwriters was very meticulous and a little bit overwhelming. But my sales representative kept saying that they really dot the I’s and crossed the T's to make sure it’s all done right.

There was a ton of paperwork to do during the application process. But I was satisfied with their rep and the communication. The counseling was excellent. The issues we had were not really with them but with housing selling so fast and all the appraisers being tied up for months. It was just a long process and with the pandemic, everything was delayed. But they stayed with me and worked with me.

The process with them is a piece of cake. There's a gal, Jamie, who handles us and she treats us like family and tells us what to look out for. We've been very, very satisfied with Finance of America. I’m almost 81 years old now and we were faced with a situation of selling the house and moving. When we came upon this reverse mortgage, we're the kind of people that it was designed for. I just paid online my real estate taxes for this year and as long as I do that, and keep the house insured, I don't have to worry about any mortgage payments.
We live on Social Security, so it's not like we have a big retirement fund sitting there supporting us. Fortunately, we're in a house that's appreciated significantly over the years. So as long as that keeps going, we have a golden goose here. Finance of America keeps up with the times. We did almost everything online. That's an improvement over five years ago when they did such a great job for us with our first reverse mortgage. I'd recommend them to anybody.

The process was time-consuming but I got it all done. Frances just got me the loan and that is all that matters. She's a bulldog. It was great.

Finance of America had a good credit. At closing, Taylor our representative promised me and said it wouldn't show up in the initial paperwork. But when they finally closed and we got the final figures, it would be there. And it was exactly what he said. So everything said was fulfilled. He was incredibly helpful. He kept constant contact, let us know what would happen when it would happen, and coached us through the whole process. It took us almost two years to decide to do this and this made us feel that we picked the right person. It was a very good experience.
Taylor had contracted COVID right as we were at the end of our closing process. He gave me his personal cell phone number. And even as poorly as he was feeling, he was still able to be contacted. That was way above and beyond what would be expected. We were able to do the cash-and additional cash flow with no mortgage payment.

Finance of America was very responsive and capable. They got the job done. The rep was great. If I had a question, she answered it. She was honest and she gave me her own personal opinion as well as the facts. The deal worked out well.

I compared several companies and I narrowed it down to Finance of America and another company that was local. The figures were exactly the same, except that the other company charged a $20,000 fee. So I thought, “You know what? They're using Finance of America.” So, I asked whoever I was talking to, “Do you know this company?" He said, “Yes, they use us.” That made my decision because it was a $20,000 difference. Also, the reps were fine.

Finance of America was very good. Deangelis was my rep and he was an outstanding person. He just kept putting up with me until we finally got things done. The rate and terms were a little high but it's okay. The only thing is I got my place and my condominium certified as a single certification and that took almost a year and two months. That was because the people who ran the condominium had not relied on good housekeeping and record keeping. I had to dig all this stuff up myself. The people that Finance of America had reviewing all this were very good. Once their guy said something was acceptable, I never heard about that again. He was also always bringing up things that needed to be changed or done.

The rep was excellent and helpful all the way. The big decision was when because this market is crazy right now. We could find ourselves in a recession in another six months. He was pretty convinced that getting it done as quickly as possible would be the best thing in this case and I have seen nothing to the contrary so far. I've been real happy with all the things that have gone through. I would have liked it to cost less, but it's apparently just about the same regardless of where you go.

The loan officer came down with the papers that I had to sign. It was a lot of papers to sign and she went through that. When she was done, she reported it and then everything was smooth.

The application process over the computer went very fast and easy. It would have taken a month and a half, but it took forever to get the appraisal to go through because there were so many appraisals going on. Except for getting held up, the process was great. The rate and terms were excellent as well. I locked in at 1.5, and that can't be beat. Throughout the process, while the rates started going up, I was locked in even though it was taking longer than expected.
Toby, the guy I worked with, was awesome. We were in touch with each other, and at one point, the Finance of America underwriter said, “Don't worry. We'll take care of this.” They kept me there and all is well. If I had questions, Toby would try to reach me by phone, text, and email, so we would connect within half an hour. His mannerism was always very professional but he was also fun and kept me informed. He’d chase after me. I missed paying my second taxes, and he called me up and helped me work through it. A couple times, when I panicked, he talked me down. I’m very pleased, and I’d do a refinance again with Finance of America.

Julie from Finance of America Reverse handled the application process and she did a great job. If it wasn't for Julie and her professionalism, I would have stopped. In the beginning, she said the application and underwriting process would take six weeks but it took closer to nine weeks. I had unwittingly cosigned the loan for my son to go to an Ivy League school and 12 years later, he missed two payments on the thing because he was traveling between Spain and Mexico during COVID-19. That was hard to comprehend for the other end of the line. Their underwriting department has got to get with it. I would have liked to have an underwriting department that has a relatively average or above average IQ.
Other than that, Julie and her manager seem to get it. Her manager was also pretty good as far as getting things done. The hang-up was more that these are involved with the government. If somebody is going to do a reverse mortgage, I'm going to recommend them to Julie, with no question. It's a good program that was instituted for people who get old and pretty much want to stay and have their home as their home and Finance of America did a really good job.
