We live in a very small town in Parowan, Utah and we don't have mailboxes here. We have a post office and everybody has P.O. boxes and Finance of America Reverse said they couldn’t do this because I don't have a physical address. I said that I have one but they don't mail to it. They were struggling with that for a long time and I couldn't get it through to them. Everybody has post office boxes and even the City of Parowan has a P.O. box. Even my registration in my car has the P.O. box on it and they said that I got to have proof that I have a physical address. It was difficult.
We got an appraisal and they decided that they wanted to have a second appraisal. That second one came in way low. We paid 210 for this house and right now, these houses all around me are selling for 400,000. We can sell this house easily for 400,000 without even a problem. The first appraisal came in about 350, which we were okay with. But the second guy that came out and appraised it was the guy that appraised this house when we bought it and he wasn't a nice guy at all. He struggled with the fact that this house could have possibly gone up that high in the short amount of time that we've been in it. So, he appraised it at 300. The purpose of us getting a second reverse mortgage was to eliminate our payment which we did but we weren't able to take any money out yet.
Nicole, the rep we were working with, did everything that she was supposed to do and we had a good relationship with her. But she had to play by the rules. When they ordered the second appraisal, I asked why that happened and she explained it to us. But I don't understand why they had to have two appraisals and we had to pay for both of them. So, she agreed that in a year and a half, they could do another appraisal. If the appraisal comes in higher, she said that they would put in the contract that they would pay for it. Nicole did a great job and helped us get through the process. I can see how they can question stuff like that when there's potentially so much fraud going on and stuff in this world. But instead of it being a 30-day deal to close this whole deal, it ended up being about a 90-day deal.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We thrive to make everyone's experience the best we can thus appreciate the comments. Unfortunately it is a challenge with financial transactions and the protocol for PO boxes however we are happy you stuck with us.
The appraiser is an independent non affiliated third party. They do not work for us and due to compliance regulations we do not communicate with them or contract them ourselves. We are not allowed to communicate with them directly, only through another third party so we have no influence on their results. They are certified to inspect and evaluate your property in adherence with FHA guides. We are in the same position as you when it comes to value determination.
We appreciate your patience and thankful we were able to work together to fulfill your goal. We appreciate you as a customer so please let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

Finance of America Reverse was very helpful and they were better than the previous reverse mortgage that we had. They were great. The rep was friendly and knowledgeable.

The salesperson at Finance of America Reverse was low key and not high pressure, which was why I decided to go with her. When it came down to getting the first appraisal, it took six months or longer because of this world's most deadly virus. So that sucked. I had an FHA loan and they flagged it on the first appraisal, which was fair. But we’re in a rural area and you couldn’t get anybody out here. It took forever to find somebody and when they did, they were booked up for months. But none of it was Finance of America Reverse’s fault. The delay was all just the situation. During the application and underwriting process, they wanted extra documents and it might’ve taken a couple of months because once again, the world’s most deadly virus had everybody hard to get ahold of. But the loan officer was great and things went very smoothly. The counselor did a great job too.

The process worked out fine for me and I'm happily living here without a house payment. My loan officer was a jewel. He was extremely professional and thoughtful and informative. The people that recorded the loan had not returned my death certificate on my husband. He said he would make a call for me and see if he could get that headed my way. So I felt good enough towards him that I could call him and ask him to do that. I got a 2% loan and it can't get much better than that. Although it's variable rate, even if you hit the high, which is 7%, that's still a couple of percent more than the loan I had, which was a fixed at 5. So overall, it was a good choice. I was happy about it.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Finance of America Reverse is lucky to have an amazing team and we happy you felt supported throughout the process. Our mission is to ensure your retirement goals are achieved in a way that best suits your needs so please let us know if there is anything we can do for you in the future!

Refinancing with Finance of America gave us a lower interest rate and we got some cash. I worked with Katie and I really liked her. She helped me understand things and she would call and check in. She was also honest. Then, we had to make arrangements to have a notary through a window because of the pandemic and she helped with that. The application and underwriting process took about three months and that was a long time. But I was in no hurry and I'm just glad for the money. Other than that, I would like it if I didn't get all these pieces of paper in the mail.
Reviewed March 27, 2021
My loan officer, Katie, was great to work with. The process went as smoothly as possible. I do like the idea that they require counseling prior to it. Most of the people that are applying for are older and I can see how a person could become confused with what their options actually are. So requiring the counseling, although it's kind of a pain, is a good thing. The loan costs were expensive but I was happy with the interest rate.

I worked with an agent, Cecilia. She responded quickly and answered my question. She knew what she was talking about. She could not have been friendlier and more informative. But there were a few bits that were not correct. They took payment for my insurance, which I was paying my own insurance. I'm also capable of paying this mortgage. I got it for a very specific reason. I'm not 85. And I was told I pay my own insurance and my own property tax.
When it went to closing, it was $100,000. $40,000 of it to pay off an old mortgage and the other $60,000 were closing costs, which I thought were excessive. Some of the closing costs were not upfront and discussed with me. Cecilia was not even aware of this and she was upset too, after closing, when she saw that they paid $14,000 to my homeowners’ insurance. They overpaid for it and my insurance company sent me back $5,000. Other than that, it seemed to go fairly smooth. They took a very long time with the appraisal and kept requesting more appraisals which were a bit sketchy. Also, I'm on the water on Shelter Island and they don't understand this area.
Reverse mortgages are not ideal mortgages. Finance of America sends a scale that is very helpful, upfront and transparent. If you look at it, you can show for 10 years if someone keeps their home and make no payments, how this compound daily interest will go up. But the problem is, they also show that their house is going to go up. So, it looks as if no matter how high the interest goes up with the reverse, their house will always be worth more and that's always never the case. Reverse mortgages have high interest rates and compound daily can get way out of hand. But I was able to get it fast. So, it was an option for what suits me at the moment. I would recommend them to other people.

When I retired almost four years ago, we sold our house and took a second loan type of reverse mortgage through Finance of America Reverse. Now, we've seen that the interest rates have lowered so we refinanced through them. Everything was easy and simple. The rep either answered the phone or returned our call very quickly which we truly appreciate. He helped us with everything that we had any concerns with and we were very happy with everything.

An incorrect amount was put into the contract and it took about three months to go through, which was because appraisals weren't available in this area during most of that time. But in general, the experience with Finance of America Reverse was fine. The primary person that I dealt with tried to keep me informed, stayed on top of things, and responded to emails for communications.

In January of 2020 I made the statement that it would be a cold day in hell when I would ever do a reverse mortgage… I started the process in February. After advice from my accountant he said it would be good financial option to pursue. Then the work began. I started with a list of 5 sources to interview. I asked each one a series of the same questions…5 became 3 quickly. After continued questions of the three I selected Finance of America. Why? They showed a genuine interest in answering my questions in a prompt and professional manner… regardless of the number of scenarios I sent them.
I Never waited until the next day, Ellen responded with a proposal within 30 minutes…amazing! In the end they gave me options to answers of my at times confusing questions. The options detailed pluses and minuses. With facts in hand and the comfort that Finance of America had my best interest at heart moving forward was easy. There are a lot of options all selling reverse mortgages the same thing, “people” make the difference.

The application process was somewhat cumbersome. We went through it and it all hangs on the value of the property. When the value came in, it wasn't sufficient and it wasn't attractive enough to make me proceed. But I think they did not take into consideration a very significant equipment shed building. Also, there were some changes with the property. They reevaluated the property. It took us almost a year to complete the process, which I thought was frustrating. But we're really happy with our reverse mortgage and working with Finance of America Reverse, I don't have to worry about monthly payments. It's given me a lot of comfort and peace of mind.

But overall, It was a good experience.

Finance of America Reverse bought out the people my loan was with earlier. The gal who handled my loan reached out to me. She was great. She was very helpful. She did a great job. We closed in December 31. We still have a minor problem. The deed to the property has been amended. The title company, for whatever reason, used the old legal description. The new legal description is just slightly different, but it’s a little larger. It encompasses about three more acres than the old description. But that's being worked on. Finance of America did an excellent job. Their loan officer was very cooperative, very nice and got back to me in a timely manner. I've referred a couple of my associates to get back with them to see if Finance of America might wanna have a loan for them as well.

I had someone that contacted me by phone, and gave me a lot of information, and it kind of drew my curiosity. I decided to go a little further with it. The rep hooked me up with Nicole. From there, it got sounding pretty good, so we decided to go with it. Nicole was awesome. She really satisfied our needs and answered a lot of questions. We had a lot of questions to ask her, and she was able to provide the right answers. My only concern is they said they sent me a welcome packet. I was trying to go online and set up an account so that when I do the line of credit, I could go online.
For some reason, it wouldn't take my account number. I even called Nicole and told her what was going on. They sent me a line credit form request with my loan number on it and so forth. She can't provide that with me. She said they close her access to it once it's turned over. So, she was unable to provide me with the account number. Overall, the process wasn't long and drawn-out. I didn't really feel I had to call and jar anyone to get it going. Everything kind of rolled with the flow. It went pretty smoothly. Everybody, down from the person that placed the call in the first place, Nicole, down the line, all did a great job.

I refinanced with the same company which is Finance of America Reverse. It was 2017 when I got the original. We had a contact here in LA. This time, I was corresponding with somebody in San Diego. I had a credit line and when I would request it, it would go to my account’s credit union. Because I don't have checks on my debit card, I had to go to the credit union and have them do a thing on their letterhead with their stamp. I'd asked the money to be deposited when they finish but when they got settled with the people in Michigan, I was asked, “Do you want it deposited?” I was corresponding with these people and talking on the phone. I had to do that all over again. They mailed me a form to fill out and I filled it out.
I almost mailed the letter that I got from the credit union before but they didn’t ask for it. They just asked me to fill out the forms. I sent it then they called me and that was when they said, “We need a check.” I told them I don’t have a check. I don’t understand why I had to do that twice and that would be my only complaint. Everything's been pretty good. People have been responsive. If you can fax your request, it moves pretty quickly. Having been through it once, I knew what to expect. It was a little easier to go through.

We appreciate your feedback as it helps us improve our process. I am sorry to hear there was confusion regarding the transfer of funds and we will look into the confusion. We are lucky to have you as a loyal customer and partner. Please let us know there is anything further we can do to make your retirement goals a reality!

I was working with AAG and turned off by the way they were going about things. I was having a hard time getting one of my wife's credit bureau accounts unlocked and AAG hounded me about it. When I talked to the person from Finance of America, he said, "Well, that's not a big deal for us." "Okay, great. That's who I'm working with." Because the guy from AAG was annoying as hell. I kept going back and forth. And he couldn't figure out how to get the thing unlocked. I then started working with a guy from Finance of America and just kept going, little by little.
Andrew was the guy who I worked with. He seemed to leave me alone because I was learning my way through it. I said, "Send me this stuff by email." It might take me a week or 10 days to get around to doing it, but I would look at his email and what the next step was. He just let me go at my pace, and I did. I appreciated that. Because in the beginning, I wasn't sure whether I really wanted to do this. I didn't know anything about reverse mortgages, etc. I did some research online, looked things up and read as I went, and I kept getting more and more confident. Andrew was very accommodating. For old people like me that have never been through it before, it's a little disconcerting as a process. I can imagine a little lady might be going through it, it could be a little unnerving. That's one of the reasons because I liked the way that Andrew went about it.
When I decided I was going to do this, we had a mortgage from Provident, and it's making monthly payments. So, when I started out to do this, I expected that I would continue to make monthly payments, to increase the equity in the house. And the way it turned out, once the reverse mortgage got implemented, I was surprised that there was no easy process to go about making monthly payments. It seemed like they didn't want my money.
That was the only surprise to me. It's almost like the way it's set up is, "Okay, you got your reverse mortgage. Forget about it. We'll talk to you when you die or when someone die or whatever." If you don't make monthly payments, it's never going to get paid off. And I didn't get that until after we got the mortgage. It seemed like it was okay if you wanted to pay, but the way the system is set up, it's weird. There's not a lot of information like, "If you want to make monthly payments, here's where you go and here's how you do it." I managed through it. I finally did get it set up, figured out how to go about it because it's automated. I've done 20 mortgages and this was by far the most relaxed, unassuming kind of easygoing process that I've ever been through with getting a mortgage. In my case, it worked.

The application process at Finance of America Reverse was fairly easy. The rep was outstanding. She answered every question. I was quite versed in what was there, so I just had a few key questions after getting more information as to what reverse mortgage is. We were trying to close around the holidays and it didn't happen. The underwriting was okay. The only problem was getting the attorney on their side available. Mine was, at all times.
There were also a few faux pas that happened. I closed. It got funded. That was delayed because the information was never received by the title company. They had to push the funding to me two days past the time it should have funded because of the mail delays. After they resent another thing, I had to re-sign papers from their attorney. Had to come back and meet me and sign again all of the information. That was late. Then a few days past that, they made a mistake. I had to give back 3,600. I funded them out. But it was returned quickly.

Our representative, Francesca, did a thorough job. There were many times when instructions would come to do something like sign certain papers. When she would become aware that there was a question left hanging which was not addressed by the lady who sent it from the main company, she'd follow through. We had several instances that required following up on our part or Francesca's part but she was very patient. She worked with us and helped us get through the whole thing.
It took about four and a half months for the thing to close. It was so laborious because the one that sends us the information would not give us what she wanted exactly. Francesca was the one that kind of gave hope and clarity to what was going on. Every time we had questions, Francesca would clarify and tell us to hang tight. I don't know if it's one continuous company but it seems that it was scattered. There was kind of a broken flow and if it weren’t for Francesca, it would have been very tedious. But overall, working with Finance of America Reverse has been reassuring for us and it was a relief that the interest rate is much lower.

It would be helpful if whatever state one happens to be working in, they would be more familiar with the rules and regulations. Other than that, the procedure was rather easy. The rate was fair. Joe was also as good as I could have asked for. He facilitated things as much as possible and tried to make the excruciating paper collection less aggravating than it otherwise would be. I'd give him an a plus. Applying for a reverse mortgage was like any mortgage application process. It was overly paper-filled, burdensome and incredibly repetitive in supplying the same info over and over again, but they're not any worse than any conventional mortgage I've ever gotten. That's just the mortgage application process.
When I went to Florida and closed with the escrow agent down there, they were also were wildly praising FA Reverse. Apparently, getting one of these through the mortgage-backed entities is a pain computer-wise. They talked about how much the FA Reverse staff helped them in that end of things. All in all, it was a very positive experience. I got an adjustable rate, capped downwards at 3%. In theory, I could have argued. I should have gotten another quarter of a percent, but based on the time frame I did it in, that was a very fair rate. Terms are straightforward too.

The application process with Finance of America was fairly simple. I started on the second week of December and we closed before Christmas. Their rep was a joy to work with. His name was Mark and he lived in Tulsa. I was born in Enid, Oklahoma so we got along really well. He was a straight shooter because the other person I talked to said I'd get $1,100. But Mark got 30,000 back so I got a fair deal. I also told Mark not to call in the morning. So he always was nice to call in the afternoon. I also really appreciate that the people are coming over to my house to sign the paperwork because I have COVID agoraphobia and I just don't leave the house. I also like the fact that Mark is willing to do FedEx for me because I don't want to get out and go to Kinko's and fax something. He was very good about doing that.

My representative, Scott, was awesome. I was impressed with the immediacy of his response, his knowledge of his job and of the law, and his great sense of humor. I felt very comfortable working with him and because of Scott, I was extremely pleased with Finance of America. Unfortunately, I’m not always pleased with the resources that I was forced to use on the side - like the appraisal companies or things of that nature. But Scott had rectified everything that was wrong. He told me to call him if I should have any questions in the future and I believe it.

I started the application and underwriting process at the beginning of October and finished the process in January. I had some setbacks because I had to have an engineer inspection which took about three weeks. Then, when it came to increasing my home insurance value, the insurance company took about 10 days before they complied with the increase. But I found the Finance of America reps very easy to work with. I initiated the first call to see if it was possible to start my reverse mortgage rewritten and they referred me to an agent. The agent stayed in contact with me almost on a daily basis, her days off included, to make sure that I had what I needed and I was working on what I needed to be working on. It almost drove her crazy when we were waiting for the inspector to finally come.

It took three weeks to get some paperwork done, that they should have done in the first place and sent it to me overnight. That kind of gummed up the works for a while. Other than that, the application process was fine. People were very pleasant. My loan officer was great. I really appreciated her working with me. She kept me informed, and she would call and check. That was one of the biggest things that I appreciated with Finance of America Reverse because I originally reached out to AAG and they were going to pay for the council part but they never called me back.

My loan officer was terrific. They are lucky to have her work for them. I got a certain amount of money when I got the reverse mortgage up front. It was about 16,000 and there was money held back for a year of about 40,000. They held back $1,625 for the painting until that was done. But I seem to get different answers from the repair section every time I talk to someone. They need to get a person out here to take the pictures to send to them to prove that the work was done. I've been trying to get ahold for a week and a half and they keep telling me lines are down and the weather's bad. I can't get through to them. It cost me $936 to have that work done.

We're glad to hear you had a great experience with your loan officer but sorry to hear you're experiencing difficulties with servicing's repair administration. We will send a message to the servicing oversight team to see if anything can be done to expedite the process.

The application and underwriting process with Finance of America was enormous. I got 140 pages and I had to sign 70 of them. I took a long time with it because I didn't know what I was signing. It was too much stuff and it made me a little nervous. But then I talked to some other agents and other people, and Finance of America was the one I liked the most. There should be a way to cut down the paperwork so we'd know what we were signing because some of it was in tiny print. Some of the things signed were saying that if I were to die or go into a nursing home for over a year, the notary would come do unpayable immediately. They've changed that now so that my heir has a year or more to sell the house. But it'd be nice if they took that out and didn't have me sign the other one. There are so many in there that are so complicated that I'm hoping I haven't signed my life away.
The thing that I appreciated most with Finance of America is their patience. I shopped around and their rep, Toby, was patient about it. Nobody sent me threatening letters or anything. Toby was calling me fairly often and I just told him that I couldn't decide and I had to think. So he just let me call when I was ready. Taking a loan like this is never pleasant. But compared to the other experiences I had, Finance of America was good.

Finance of America walked me through the reverse mortgage process, all the questions and answers. I dealt with Diana the most through this and she was a really sweet person. I really enjoyed working with her. Anytime I had a question that I wasn't sure about, we discussed it. We also had a three-way conversation a few times with my son. So, everything turned out to be just fine.
Finance of America ran into a few issues that had to be redone. They had to follow the protocol. But that didn't take long and it wasn't too much of a hassle on my behalf. We had a lot of papers to sign but it was okay. The process of going through counsel was relatively good. The people that I dealt with were professional and very nice and friendly to work with. I was very comfortable with Finance of America Reverse through this process and I enjoyed it.

I really liked the attitude of Andrew, the guy who dealt with the reverse mortgage for me. He was very good. That was the reason I went with Finance of America. Andrew was pretty level with everything. He put all the cards on the table and always answers my questions. He always got back to me within a very short period of time if I had a question. Although, when he did the quote for the refinance, he quoted on the situation in May of last year, whereas we're in through October. May looked a lot better for me. So, initially, he said, "You could get something like $30,000 in cash," and that gradually depleted down to $13,000. Part of that was due to relying on data that was not up to date.
The appraisal held things off a bit as it usually does. We were trying to get it done before the end of last year, and it all started somewhere around October. It took about four months to do the whole thing. There were one or two hold-ups. We had to do a lot of work for the appraisal, take photos of the inside of the house. It's already been appraised when we initially got the mortgage. They wanted us to take a lot of photos of the inside of the house and they never actually arrived at the house. So, that was a bit of a hold-up getting all that stuff done.
The paperwork was absolutely amazing. Hundreds and hundreds of pages and the number of signatures you had to sign on was insane, especially during the pandemic, where we were doing it in the driveway, one car to another car. It must have been 500 pages of data using inside lights for the car to find out where you had to sign. They could improve on that.

I was proceeding with another reverse mortgage company, the one I had see on television all the time and the reviews were good, but they didn't seem like they had much hope that my situation would work. They didn't work with me and they didn't even want to follow through. Then, I got in touch with Finance of America and Mark. Mark stayed with me through the whole thing and worked it out. The process took almost three months from start to finish. It took a lot longer than I anticipated, but it worked out well. Mark handled everything pretty well. But there were some issues that could have been dealt with quicker and more user-friendly for me. But I would recommend them to anybody.
One of the things that made the process take a little bit longer was that the FHA made me do a second appraisal. That dragged it out for another two weeks and the appraisal came in within $1,500 of the first appraisal and I ended up paying for both of those appraisals. I didn't request a second appraisal and it ended up costing me a ton of money. That left a bad taste in my mouth.
The reverse mortgage, in my opinion, is a horrible deal. It's good for some folks. I had special issues that the reverse mortgage took care of for me because my wife worked for the state of Louisiana all her working career and it wouldn't draw Social Security once she retired because she was on a pension for the state. And because she's in this pension plan, she can't draw any of my Social Security when I die if she's still alive. And that, along with another pension that I have that she can't draw all of but only 66% of, that altogether would put a pretty good pinch on her income, that she would not have been able to probably stay in our house. So, in our situation, the reverse mortgage accomplished the issue of her being able to stay in the house should I go first.

The only retirement funds I had were in my home. So, I sold the home to get the funds. Then, in order to keep the majority intact, I had to do a reverse mortgage purchase. I investigated two of companies. One was not helpful at all. The other one was, but then, I called and left a word for the one that was helpful, but they didn't respond back. So, I looked on the internet again and saw Finance of America. I talked with Karen first and then, I switched over to Linda because she's the one who handles the purchases, and she did an absolutely beautiful job. She worked very hard and fast because my Realtor put down a 30-day contract and FHA is usually 45 days to 60. The Realtor sort of blew it there. So, that meant Linda and all the staff there had to work really hard and fast. They got the FHA approved in 27 days, so I was very impressed with them. It would have been great to have rate lower, but I understand.

I had a loan that I refinanced and the FHA insurance dropped from 1.25% to 1.5%. I'm gonna have the variable rate instead of a fixed rate. I chose Finance of America Reverse because it looked like they were as competitive as anybody. The application and underwriting were fine. The overall process was time-consuming. But they had to do what they had to do to cross all the t's and dot the i's.
I was a little bit frustrated because they were gonna tie my rate right to my BOA rate if we closed by November 30th. But they ordered a second appraisal so we missed that date. The term changed to an adjustable monthly. I wasn't happy about that because the other one was a better deal. It was not my fault that it didn't get closed by November 30th and I got kicked over to the other rate schedule that can adjust monthly. Also, I had a new gal who didn't understand some of the issues that I was trying to explain to her. She pushed back and I told her that was not it. I ended up talking to her boss, Francis, and he was really helpful in getting that straightened out. He was really good about getting back to me.

The reverse mortgage is not the greatest deal in the world. It works for somebody my age and in my circumstances. You spend a lot of money but on the other hand, there's no free lunch that they give you access to a line of credit. They don't know when they're gonna get paid back. Everything is fair. I don't have any quarrel with it and certainly not with Finance of America. Those rates were set by other people. My biggest problem with the whole process is that the government dictates so much of it. The government made the rules and regulations and made the process cumbersome and awkward. In this process, I ended up talking to four different reverse mortgage places and even started the process with three of them. You got to turn your patience up high with Finance of America.

I am sorry to hear your experience was not ideal. I did notice your loan was transferred to Finance of America from Reverse Mortgage Funding and only took 5 weeks from the time your case was at FAR to closing which was very quick considering the Thanksgiving holiday.
I also see that your appraisal with RMF was rescheduled four times which must have been frustrating. The appraiser is an independent non affiliated third party. The agent was so open and honest and had a sense of humor dealing with old people. The application and underwriting process was long and involved, but necessary to be that way. Every step was told to me, and it came out like they told me. Even if it was going to be six weeks later, it was accurate. I like everything, but what the federal government makes them do, the 4.5%. Nevertheless, I understand what they're doing. They were ahead of the curve on everything they did.

I started with a different company and I wasted five months with them. When I changed to Finance of America, I immediately felt comfortable and I was in the right place. Julie, my loan officer, was very knowledgeable. Of course, she wanted to get a client. But she wanted to mesh my best interest with the company's best interest. She was a win-win person and she would not let me do anything to hurt myself in the process. She knew what she was talking about, helped me with decisions several times, and cared about me. There was a time that I talked to another company and they offered me a different rate. But Julie explained to me that because I was doing mine as an equity line, I wouldn't take it all at once, while I was accruing interest at a higher rate to add to my available funds. I was pleased.

I was looking for a reverse mortgage company and I spoke with several people. Some of them were not very nice. This was about my house. I have to feel comfortable and feel that they are knowledgeable enough. I have to trust them and it's hard to trust somebody I can't see over the phone. Finance of America Reverse was very open about everything and they were not trying to hide anything.
The process was good and it wasn't their fault that it took long. It was very difficult and there was a lot going on. I worked with somebody from a different company who didn't know what he was doing and he messed everything up for everybody. It was a big job what Finance of America Reverse did with me. I worked with two people and they both went out of their way to help me. They were very clear about everything and made sure I understood. I recommend Finance of America Reverse to people.

HORRENDOUS experience with Finance of America Reverse. HORRIBLE COMMUNICATION with all involved parties, BAIT AND SWITCH w/ the closing costs -LIARS BUYER BEWARE - HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE - STAY AWAY. There are so many bad things to say about Finance of America Reverse, that I am sure I will miss something. HORRIBLE COMMUNICATION throughout entire process. Multiple times I told/emailed loan officer, Cecilia ONLY call me on a certain phone number; I had to state this 4X. This caused many problems.
HORRIBLE COMMUNICATION FROM APPRAISERS. Cecilia said appraisal companies WOULD CALL ME. Waited 5 days for the appraisal company to call me. They never did. I contacted appraisal company myself, only to be told that the appraisal had already been done; drive-by appraisal. Would have been nice if somebody had called me. As a result, I was irritated for 5 days for no reason at all because of poor communication.
SELECTIVE EMAIL RESPONSES FROM CECILIA - (Don't take my word for it, read the emails) If I emailed Cecilia 3 questions, she might answer 2 out of 3. 3rd question would never get answered, prompting me to have to ask again. Some questions that I asked would never get answered, just ignored. I asked Cecilia for an amortization spreadsheet of the highest interest rate so that I could view a worst case scenario. Cecilia told me that the software couldn't do that, yet she was able to send me a spreadsheet with the lowest interest rate?? - LIE - She didn't want me to see how much a higher interest rate would eat into the home equity very quickly. Cecilia was very receptive until I put my money up for the appraisal. Once she had my money, the communication was horrible.
I used to get email responses to my questions within minutes. After they had my money I was waiting up to 5-days for a response, which ruined my whole week. When signing the original docs, NOT the closing docs, Cecilia told me that they will give a credit to my closing costs on the CLOSING documents of about $4,200, BUT the docs that I sign upfront will NOT show the credit, (DOES THIS SOUND FISHY TO ANYONE?) BUT the FINAL CLOSING docs will show the credit.
When reviewing the final docs, the credit of $4,200 was NOT there. I asked Cecilia, "Where is the $4,200 credit?" She said that she would add it back in. If I hadn't reviewed the FINAL docs, Cecilia and Finance Reverse of America would have left out the credit OF $4,200. BAIT AND SWITCH. Additionally, all of the closing costs were MUCH HIGHER than the Good Faith Estimate, especially the title insurance - VERY MISLEADING - How come EVERY closing cost change worked against my mother, the borrower?? Additionally, the underwriters required an additional appraisal. Finance of America Reverse tried to stick me with another $550 APPRAISAL FEE to PAY for it. VERY SNEAKY.
Cecilia said loan close before xmas - it did NOT. I was told my loan would close on a certain day, at a certain time with no say in the matter. Then, I was told the loan was NOT going to close that day. We'd have to close it the following week. Cecilia said money would be wired to bank account. After loan closed told me THEY COULD NOT WIRE THE MONEY into my account because the money can't be deposited into an account with more names than the main borrower's name on it. WHY DIDN'T MY LOAN OFFICER CECILIA TELL ME THIS BEFOREHAND. - This caused a total nightmare for my mother receiving her funds. Went through hell trying to get the title company to send check and was lied to 3X. Asked Cecilia for the phone number CEO of Finance of America Reverse. Cecilia never got back to me with the CEO's number.

Finance of America had fewer costs with front-end loading and everything on a loan. They loan the money directly and don't go through other spider banks. They also made it a very smooth process. I wish I had done it a long time ago. I had a gal named Bunny and she was fantastic. She was the gal that was setting up the loan and my first contact. There was another gal that was responsible for sending the communications to get various documents. She was very slow to communicate the status back to Bunny. When I called, Bunny would have to call the other gal and check with her. That could have been smoother.
Other than that, I had a good experience and I was very pleased. In my case, I have no descendants. My wife and son died. My nieces and nephews are all comfortable financially. I thought, "Why should I sit here and leave them my estate when I can take my equity and enjoy it now?" I took some of my equity and bought a beautiful red Thunderbird Convertible.

I had to go to a class about reverse mortgages when I went with Finance of America Reverse. Then, I got a packet that I went over with the rep who was a mortgage broker. He submitted that will all this documentation which was quite expensive. I then had to come up with half the money down. After all that, the application took a while to get through. It was a slower process but it went smoothly.
Finance of America's rate was a bit higher and the loan is a little bit more. We went with a fixed one in case mortgage rates jumped up. We're older and we are hopefully not going to move again. We also don't have kids to leave our house to. We're also not paying every month if we don't want to. But, if we decide that we want to pay, we can. Eventually, if decide we wanna move, we can sell the house. So, this reverse mortgage works for us. After we closed, they sent us a statement saying they forgot to add $500 more worth of charges. That was a little disconcerting. Who would want to pay 500 or 600 more dollars out after paying thousands out in the closing? Nobody. The loan officer did mention that I will probably have to pay some more money after the closing. I thought it probably wouldn't happen but it did.

I acted as the contact for my parents. They finished their loan. Our rep, Julia, was excellent and top-notch and I had absolutely no complaints about her. But I found that the timeline was much too long. It was delayed several times for items, which I found to be a little bit ridiculous, things like IDs for my mother from before she got married to match her maiden name to her married name after 51 years. I'm a lawyer, I do this, and I've never seen that. And I've done reverses for clients too.
I'm very displeased with the title company. Finance of America chose one from out of state to work on something here, who then had to hire a closing attorney in the state. It was a cumbersome situation and I didn't think the two organizations worked with each other very well. Bad communications. I have my own office. I know what it's like to do customer service and I don't think they supplied it. The title company collected for the real estate taxes, the refinanced loan that was paid off also collected for the taxes, the paid off loan paid the taxes. I called the title company. They said they intercepted it and they would send it. That's now going on four weeks and that check has not been sent to my parents. And I told this to Julie. I said, "Julie, you're at Finance of America, you're at Chase, you're at 1,000 different banks. You can call me any day of the week and I will absolutely work with you again. I'm not sure I would work with Finance America.”
But I find that it has been very helpful for them. I've been trying to get this done with them for years. Their savings had to be used as part of that because they wanted to stay in a house, that realistically, they should be downsizing. They're extremely happy to be done with paying. Their kids are all taken care of, so they're not looking to leave anything behind, and none of us are looking for them to leave anything behind. It's the best of all worlds. At the end of the day, if there's anything left, great. If there's nothing left, they're taken care of 'til the end of their lives, then the rest of us are extremely happy with that result. It fits their circumstance.

Thank you for your feedback as we do read and want to learn ways in which to improve. We are so happy that you were able to provide your parents with a solution that works for everyone however agree that the timeline was too long.
Unfortunately the documentation required by the underwriter in combination with the documents being from another country and not in English indeed created a delay. As much as this was not ideal, it was done in an effort to protect your parent's assets.
We appreciate your comments regarding the title company and will review the relationship in an effort to communicate better and alleviate unnecessary disconnects and thus improving the customer experience.
Julie is a gem here at FAR and please feel free to reach out any time if we can help support you or your parents.

I started trying to refinance way back in January with another company and it was so frustrating. Then, Adam from Finance of America called me and from that day on, everything went very smoothly, thanks to him. He was exceptional. He not only did his job, he did it excellently. It took away all the anxiety. He called me several times to be sure that I knew what was going on. That never happened with the other company. If I could adopt Adam as a grandson, I would because he was kind, compassionate, thoughtful, and explained everything carefully to this old lady. I can't say enough good about him and how much it meant to me to have somebody really take that on, get it to the end of the journey, and have everything be fine. Also, I'm grateful to Finance of America because they have hired him. They have done a great job, even their communication after it was all over.
The only disappointment was that the appraisal was put at $425, 000 and consequently, the amount of money that I was able to refinance with wasn't what I had hoped it to be. They were going to give me $10,000, and then Adam got them to go up to 12-something because he's seen the other appraisals. But other than that, I have no complaints.

The agent from Finance of America was very personable on the phone. I had specifically said that I wanted a fixed mortgage. Then when the guy showed up when we came to close our loan the first time, it was all wrong. So I called the agent the next day and told him that I did not sign. Then he said that processing just made a mistake and apologized. So they sent him out again with the adjustable.
I did some shopping and got quotes from different people and the quote from Finance of America was the best. But when the agent came back with the actual numbers, it was totally different. I received a copy of the appraisal and it came in at least $10,000 low and I knew exactly what houses in here were selling for. I disputed it with the agent and he came back and said he presented it to his manager and there was nothing they could do.
For someone that was reading the federal government's ads about reverse mortgages, the experience didn't live up to my expectations. It should have been a lot less stress-free and the appraisers should not have that much power. If it's proven that they go out of the neighborhood to compare my home to homes that aren't even comparable, that seems very unfair and unprofessional. On the other hand, Finance of America didn't fight for me to get it corrected. But if I want to cancel this, I have to wait three to four months to start over. I was going to be right in the middle of surgery and that wasn't going to happen. So I just went ahead and went through it. So I'm hoping that it works out well. In view of that, I would not recommend Finance of America. I would recommend people shop more than I did.
After I expressed my dislike of what had happened, the agent went back to the manager and they added $2,000-some onto my reverse mortgage so that I would get at least that much cashback because I just had major surgery and I was counting on having some cashback. That was one of the main reasons I was doing the reverse mortgage. That, and getting rid of the $678 a month payment.

Regarding the appraisal, The appraiser is an independent non affiliated third party. They do not work for us and due to compliance regulations we do not communicate with them or contract them ourselves. We are not allowed to communicate with them directly, only through another third party so we have no influence on their results. We were glad to have the reverse mortgage finalized and Finance of America Reverse seems to be pretty competent.

Also, the rep I worked with, Andrew, was friendly and likes to talk. He's a good person and knowledgeable. It went easy with Finance of America Reverse. I started out with a mortgage broker at a regular bank. After going through a lot of that process, it turned out that I wasn't going to meet the requirements and after spending a lot of time with the papers, I decided that I didn't want to reapply under the Jumbo. I applied with the other bank under the HUD program then I just abandoned it. In doing research back then, I did a couple of cold calls, and one of them was to Finance of America. I didn't want to do the terms that they were then. Then I started thinking about it. At the same time, one of the mortgage brokers that reached out to me the year before suddenly contacted me. The rules had changed and the terms were more favorable to what I needed. The process took 11 months. It turned out that there were some issues right at the end.
The loan officer was a very special person. She and I were both very detail-oriented. She had a lot of experience which translated into lots of information. She was very patient and certain that I understood what she was saying. She was very wonderful and I could not have done it with anyone but her. I’m really grateful to Finance of America and I love Katie.

Finance of America Reverse double-charged me for an appraisal that I never got. They sent another appraisal person out here but nobody ever showed up. I tried to deal with it with Nicole, the girl I originally did the loan with, and she got very hasty with me. I said to just forget it. But they screwed me out of $500 something. It really upsets me that they double charged me for an appraisal and the fact that the last appraisal was less than the first one and they used the last. I tried to talk to that first appraiser that came out here and he didn't want to listen to me. I built this house myself and I got about $200,000 worth of extras in this house, which they didn't take into consideration. I have a couple of friends who were appraisers who said they were supposed to take everything into consideration. I got the money I wanted but I'm not happy with the experience.

Thank you for your feedback as we take every one seriously in order to make improvements where necessary.

Due to Covid restrictions and FHA mandate, the appraisers don’t come inside so you may have missed seeing them. As we mentioned in advance, some cases require 2 appraisals of which the FHA guideline is to take the lowest of the 2 and unfortunately they both have to be paid for.

The overall experience with Finance America Reverse got taken care of. I got done what I needed to get done. However, there was a little bit to be desired as far as their follow-through. The whole procedure took me about six months. It was indicated to me at the beginning, it would take about two months. During the process, any little thing that came up, I would go through my loan broker that seemed to be an employee of Finance of America. He seemed to be conscientious enough, but then, every little thing would take two weeks to resolve.
At one point, my loan broker would say, "I need your bank statements." At the beginning of the loan, I gave him all documentation on my identification and bank accounts. Then four months later, they wanted to see the same documentation. I'd say, "I already sent it to you two or three months ago." So, I'd send an item to them again, and they would take two weeks and they'd say, "Well that's taken care of, now we need this." "I already sent that to you also." They would say that they need it again. So, I would come up with that information. It seemed like almost the left foot didn't know what the right foot was doing.
Sometimes my loan broker would say, "I'll call you back tomorrow." But then, I wouldn't get a call for a week. Then, I had to deal that he was on vacation for a couple of weeks. There were so many delays and then I got into it so deeply, that I couldn't switch companies. I was so aggravated. My fiance kept telling me I better go with another company. I kept saying, "The reviews are good with them. I feel confident the end results gonna be okay." In the end, they had a notary come out, didn't give me the right forms and I had to wait three weeks to get the forms. I actually did a rescission on the loan and they ended up coming out and finally taking care of that. I give them an A, as far as their follow-through. It got done. But I give them a fail as far as the timing to get there. It was just so long and every little thing took so long. But my loan broker seemed to be truthful enough and the company seemed to be good and sincere enough.

I was about halfway into the process with another, the one that advertises all the time. The refi that I did with Finance of America Reverse, they said that they are a broker, and that they don't tend to sell the mortgages off to other people, whereas a lot of the others procure them, but then sell them. I had a bad experience. I refinanced twice in the 30 some odd years that I lived here, and every time, somebody sold it off to Countryside. Countryside is the one who went bankrupt in ‘08 and had massive paperwork irregularities. So I just was like, I don't want to end up with some fly-by-night ** place. Finance of America was like, “No, we're a brokerage. We buy from others. We don't necessarily sell them."
I knew it was going to be tough, but they walked me through it, helped me out. It's a long, involved, convoluted situation. But at each step, if there was any confusion or questions, if Randy didn't know exactly what to tell me, she turned me on to somebody in the company whose expertise could work me through it. She was the best. She called me on Saturdays or Sundays or evenings. She knows I'm a night nurse, and she worked back and forth trying to get together with my schedule. And she was always patient and explained everything. She went above and beyond.
A little confusion at the end was my taxes were due within two or three months from the time I closed, and they said they had held the money to make sure that that got paid. But there was no real, “So are you gonna pay it? Am I gonna pay it?” whatever. The lady that came out at that point didn't know. I went online to pay them yesterday and they have been paid. That bit of confusion could have been a better explained, especially for elderly. Because when you pay the city, they aren't paying it back. So if they had paid, and then the people who would refinance had paid, that's just money out of their pocket for two years.
I've already told others about Finance of America Reverse. I had to wait a year to get the amount of money required to double what I owed, and I waited to make sure that I could do that. But I feel very comfortable with this. People need not to leave their children large amounts of money or whatever. You work hard for it. If you want to stay in your home and you want to be able to eat other than cat food, then it's important that you take care of yourself and go for this. It just is breathing space. I've been a nurse for 46 years so eventually, I'm not going to be able to pull it off. And at that point, then not having to put out that amount for the mortgage would allow me to have a decent lifestyle.

I found the personnel at Finance of America to be very honest up front.
They had guidelines they had to go through, but it wasn't anything serious. The representatives they sent out to represent HUD inspectors were incompetent. I told them that they need to find more competent inspectors when they send them out to look our properties over. That was the only real frustrating thing. I applied in July. In the latter part or mid-September, I got the money. The contract was consummated. So, that wasn't long.

He was knowledgeable and diligent. If he didn't know to answer immediately, he got back to you and if he said he was going to email, text or call, that was what he did. He was very diligent about following up and he didn't nag or aggravate you. He would say that we needed to get this done to proceed. If it didn't happen in a few days in some form, he would text you. He wasn't pushing you and would just remind you. One or two things that we didn't fully understand had to be done over and he was very patient. He represented the company very well.
The whole process took about two and a half weeks and the most tedious part in the application process was the day when the guy came and I gotta sign 400 papers. It took well over an hour and I don't know if the government requires all that to do this but it was worth it to me. The rates and terms were surprising. The interest rate is now less than 3% but I can remember when the interest rate was 20%. A deal like this would not have been feasible and wouldn't make any sense. The interest would have eaten the thing up so quick.
Working with Finance of America Reverse is like there’s money in the bank. If we need something, then we have access to it. At this point, I don't have to go jump through a whole lot of hoops. That way if we need a root canal done and don't have cash on hand, it's good security. The whole experience was very pleasant. I have a nephew who went through the same process and his dragged on over six months because the guy didn't follow up regularly. It can be done right and it can be done wrong. I was fortunate to get the guy that did it right. I'll recommend the company because it went well for us.

They constantly had to get more and more information, rather than giving us information what we have to have all at once. It was very taxing in that fashion. Finance of America's application process appeared to be relatively uneventful due to the fact they used DocuSign and electronic means today. It went as well as to be expected. From start to finish, it took much longer than I really anticipated. It took three months. It was no fault of our loan officer. It's just that we were informed that they were requiring a random selected second appraisal. That's what really threw the monkey wrench into it. It was an extremely bad experience. The lending process was fine. The issue and a severe problem was with the appraiser
Our loan officer, Marina, did an outstanding job of helping and assisting, trying to get the appraisal resolved. By law, they cannot speak to the appraisers. We did have to file twice for a rebuttal to the appraiser. If I were in the authority position of the licensing board, I'd remove this appraiser's license. I feel that she was a very inadequate appraiser. She made such gross and enormous errors. She listed our house as having built on a crawlspace. We have a two-story colonial. I don't know of any colonials that are built on a crawlspace. It was a complete, high-end, finished, lake level walk-out lower basement level with a complete professional kitchen. There's a second kitchen in this house.
Finance of America was very competitive. I started the reverse mortgage process with another company, and then I received a call from FAR and they were competitive and I transferred over to them. We're pleased with the rates. We were very pleased with how competitive they were with the credits that they gave us. They were very professional. They were very much attentive to try to resolve the issue with the handling of the rebuttals to the appraiser company and the appraiser. The issue with the appraiser had nothing to do with FAR and a great amount of assistance of trying to get it accurately corrected.
Unfortunately, the way that things are today, with what happened to the housing market back in 2008, it's changed the laws about where lenders could not communicate with appraisers. They stripped of that opportunity to have a direct communication. It kinda leaves it in the hands of these appraisers that pretty much can do as they damn well please and get away with it. It's really quite disgusting.
In all reality, FAR and Marina did to the best of their ability to assist us in filing formal rebuttals twice to this appraiser. It really did affect us financially. I would say that the way this process is now set up by law is you have these third party entities, these appraisal management firms that lenders go to, and the appraisal management firms put out word that, "Here's an appraisal," and you get the appraisers in those markets.

Third. I was promised about $10K and no closing costs. They gave me about $10k but the loan was for $410K. When I closed the loan, I owed the bank about $397K. Meaning that they cheated me for about $10K since the bank gave me about $3K. Fourth, they broke the law and cheated me. The initial proposal made me choose Finance of America over other companies. But I was not informed by the rep properly the way I was supposed to be and the process took twice as long as it should have. It took close to 70 days and I was very dissatisfied with the length of time. It shouldn't have been that complicated, in my situation. The bottom line was that I paid off my mortgage. But Finance of America was accusing me of not paying off the loans properly. I had two mortgages and I paid off the first mortgage. I didn't pay off the second mortgage until the sale of the house.
Finance of America was questioning where I got the money for the first mortgage, which I had paid an entire year prior to. It shouldn't even be a question. I even showed them proof where I claimed the amount on my taxes and paid taxes on the money that I used to pay off my loan but that wasn't good enough. I had to get a letter from my 401k company, showing where I got the money a year prior to closing my house. Then the interest rates are good. But I was a little misled at how much my closing cost was gonna be. The closing cost was about $4,000 more than I anticipated. But I had already been 80 days into it so I just went with it 'cause I didn't wanna start the process all over again.

My brother actually was part owner of the house with my mother and he wanted out of the mortgage. It was a very complicated situation. A friend of mine who was a realtor helped me and proposed that a reverse mortgage might be the way and so I got involved. The application process didn't take more than a month. it was fast. My interaction with the loan officer was great. But I didn't like the terms of the interest agreement and I misunderstood it. It wasn't a fixed rate. So I did a remortgage recently with the same company and I got the interest rate down. That took three weeks and I was really impressed.
Finance of America went with me every step of the way. The person assigned to help me was excellent. She followed up on everything if I had any questions and I could call her. If she didn't have the answers, she would get the answers for me right away. When it came down to the actual closing, they came to the house and they respected the fact that we had to sit six feet apart. I managed to set up a table so that we could be separated. Everybody kept their mask on and we did what we had to do. It was a quick process. They were on time. Then any questions I had while we were signing the papers were answered. Everything was done in a professional manner, but quickly. Finance of America Reverse was a really good company. They really worked with me. I would definitely recommend it and I hope other people would have as good of experience as I had.

My wife didn't wanna leave the house and we still owed $88,000 on it. If we did a reverse mortgage, we could stay in the house and wouldn't have to pay the high monthly mortgage payment. We did and it went well with Finance of America Reverse. The rep was very knowledgeable and very compassionate. He was always checking in with me making sure that I had all my questions answered. He was excellent.
When we went to close on it, the person that they sent did not tell me I needed somebody there to sign other than my wife and I. I had to call my daughter to come over to sign. They also didn't tell me I would need something other than my driver's license for proof that I am who I am. I had to find my birth certificate and Social Security card. I would have been a lot happier if I could have had all that in a file folder and opened it and showed her. I had to do that for my wife too. I was not happy. Then they lost it. She mailed it and it never showed up where she supposedly mailed it to. I had to do it all over again. It wasn't Finance of America's problem though. It was who they asked in Fort Wayne to come and go through the process. But the second person was great. Also, because they don't know where it went, how it got lost and where it's lost, they gave us six months of insurance protection in case somebody opens it that shouldn't and get Social Security numbers. I have protection against that.

I contacted about four companies at the same time but I went with Finance of America because of the person that helped me with the loan. He got back with me quickly and continued to work with me. He was very proactive. He explained the process and followed up with me on a regular basis. There were a couple of minor things on my credit report. I explained to him what was going on and he offered to draft a letter explaining that so I could sign it. That saved me some time. I was upset about the slow response time and some of the requirements didn't make sense to me. They were requiring me to do something that didn’t need to be done because I've already proven who I was. By that time, other people were contacting me but I stuck with it because I felt a lot of confidence in him.
The application process was good enough but the approval process took a long time. I started it in April and finished it up recently. There was also an instance when the underwriter was being very unreasonable. The rate could have been a little bit lower too. Some people from other companies quoted me a little bit lower rate but I had already gotten too deep in to start all over again. But overall, the experience was satisfactory and I was glad to have the loan completed. I was able to get my daughter $113,000 to pay down on the home.

The refinancing was a lot of paperwork. It seemed like a lot more this time than the first time we did it. Linda, our loan person, is okay but I had questions and I kept asking over and over because I really wanted to have a firm grasp. And I think she thought that since we had done it before, we understood more than what we did. It seemed like there was a little frustration from us asking those questions about the stuff that we needed to ask. But the timeline was fine. We weren’t in a huge hurry. I just wanted to be sure we got that lower interest on that.
The only confusion I’m having is with correspondence I’m getting from Celink and from Finance. I got one from Celink saying that they’re no longer gonna be servicing us and after a certain date, it would be Finance of America and I got that Celink got the payoff, so I’m assuming it was Finance of America that did it. Then I got what looks like a welcome letter from Celink on October 2nd. But from what Linda said and from all the paperwork I've gotten, Finance of America is gonna be servicing us now. But other than that, I'm happy with Finance. They took care of all our charges and gave us the interest that they told us.

I worked for five years remotely from home, but I'm getting macular degeneration and it was hard on my eyes. Reverse mortgages got a bad rap at one point and my bosses said that is something you do as a last resort. But it depends on if you want your kids to have all this equity in your house or if you would like to use it while you're still alive. And in our case, it's a lot of equity. Plus, my kids are both doing very well and they'll still be able to sell the house and get more money for it. We chose to do it with Finance of America Reverse because of the loan officer, Cyndi. We were getting bids from three companies to do the jumbo reverse, and I got a bid that was a little bit better than Cyndi had given us. But because she had been so straightforward, upbeat and informative, I came back to her and asked her to match that proposal. Then, she came back to me and said she could. She held my hand every step of the way and she was fabulous. I hope that the company values her because she was very helpful all along the way.
The whole process took four months but a lot of that was because I kept putting off the appraisal because we wanted to do some upgrades. I also doubt very seriously that most clients are like us. We both worked in the music industry most of our lives and therefore, we're children. We tend not to grow up and when it comes to doing grown-up stuff, we're not that good at collecting information. But the way that Cyndi handled that was with humor and a lot of hand holding, and I couldn't appreciate it more. So far, having the mortgage paid off is awesome. My partner and I both still work, so we're able to keep quite a bit of that money of equity stable, so it can grow. We're doing well and a lot of stress has been removed.

Finance of America Reverse reps were very nice and treated me well. They guided me. The process took longer than it should have but only because I didn't have a state ID and that part made the process difficult. I didn't have a driver's license anymore, because I chose not to renew it, and the lawyers who came into the house wouldn't take my past ID from the registry, my birth certificate, or my grade school’s first-year vaccination. I’m 78 years old and I kept a lot of things.
Also, I bought my house prior to my getting married then, after my husband had been deceased for four years, I went back to my maiden name and got my ID. But they wouldn't accept my ID. I had all my packet of items to prove who I was and we went through the process. The ID I gave them was the same picture of my expired driver's license because I told the registry not to bother taking another picture of me and just leave the old one. The lawyers should have accepted my ID because we're in COVID and I’m a cancer survivor. And if the rule is not etched in stone, it can be moved or worked on. Critical thinking and common sense could have prevailed but it didn’t. So, it took me over a month for me to get all these things in order before I could close on my house. All in all, Finance of America were good and they handled things fine, but the lawyers didn’t.

Finance of America Reverse was the first people I found that were willing to finance my reverse mortgage and they did a good job. The application and underwriting process was long because they had to do two different property values. The appraiser had to come out twice. So, they came out once and it appraised high. They said they didn’t have any control over it. When they put it into the computer, the computer was gonna tell them whether they have to appraise it a second time. So, it popped up as requesting a second appraisal, which was what took the longest because the second people that went to appraise were busy and they couldn't get to me.
Miranda, the rep that I was dealing with, was helpful and she explained everything to me. She provided me with the answers and it worked out perfectly. This is the second reverse mortgage I’m taking out with Finance of America Reverse. My counselor there was very helpful. She did a good job and I’m happy with her services. But the application and underwriting process was lengthy and repetitive. It has to be speeded up. There was way too much of my personal finances. I was going on the equity of my house but I had to produce my bank statements for the last year, my monthly statements from my bank, all kinds of stuff that I didn’t know I was gonna have to do. Then, they asked for the same things again three months later. I was really upset about the process. It’s supposed to be on the equity of my home, not my personal finances. It should have taken me only a month but it took almost six months for me to get my loan.
Also, all I have is my Social Security income. They knew that when they started the process, yet halfway through, after paying the $500 appraisal of my house and the $350 counseling certificate, it was almost like they were investigating me as well as my income. He was there to show me what would be done, the procedure that would be followed, and that's exactly what happened.
They did exactly what they said they were gonna do and they did it in the timeframe that they said they were gonna do. Also, they stayed in touch with me. If there was any lag time, I kinda figured that the lag time makes sense. It's not something that's done in two or three days. There are different entities that come in and you got an appraisal and other little steps that you take. It takes a while. It's an amazing mortgage and the terms were fine. Working with them increased the investment opportunities that I would have over the next relatively short period of time because of the cash flow and the way the market was set up.

He never left me hanging and kept telling me the status of things. He also walked me through the final closing process. After the deal was closed, I got two things in the mail regarding insurance. I called him up about it and he followed up.
It took almost a month but Adam pushed for me. I needed the money for emergency surgery, anesthesia, co-payments of drugs afterwards and other stuff. He worked with me and was able to assist in pushing the closing a little sooner. The fact that one agent becomes my go-to person at Finance of America as opposed to several different agents taking the calls builds rapport. One thing I did not know though was that Celink was gonna continue owning my mortgage until the beginning of November. They paid Celink off but according to the letter from Celink, my mortgage is still theirs until the end of October.
Still, I was able to get the loan from Finance of America plus the credit and my house is now reverse mortgaged with them. I was able to take some money out based on the appraisal of my home. The appraisal of Finance of America was wonderful and it was 50,000 more than the appraisal from Celink. FoA is the best. I told Adam that I would definitely spread the word. In the beginning, everything was fine. I'm happy with the rates and terms I received and they seemed to be willing to work with me in the first month. And then, it just got so hard. I don't know if it was COVID or everybody’s just going crazy and I'm not sure if this was unusual. The process was very, very long.
I understand that the process is slow. I've had many mortgages, but this was a lot worse than I've ever done before. At first, I was very frustrated with how long it was taking, because when I initially asked, they gave a timeframe and we were a month beyond that timeframe when the rep said it's still gonna be another month. I hope that some of these things can be fixed so that there are no surprises, and that everybody's just pretty upfront and honest about the timeframe that it will take. I started the process in what I understood to be a reasonable timeframe to get what I needed, and then it ended up being months passed.
Also, there were two of us on the deed for our house. Two days before I'm supposed to sign the paperwork, the rep threw something at me that was totally unexpected, and said, “Well, all companies would make you do this.” And he accused me of withholding information. I said that nobody asked me and I told them there was somebody else. We’re not married, but we are domestic partners. And so, at the very last minute, they said, “Well, it can’t be a split between you. It has to be this.” I was ready to back out of the whole thing. I felt like they were just taking advantage at that point. So I will never do another loan ever. This is it. That was the most frustrating, horrible feeling that I've had maybe since my son died.

According to what I was told, I got the rate that was ongoing. With the terms and everything, it worked out fine. I didn't have to pay a lot out of pocket. The only thing is that FHA got half percent private mortgage insurance. That’s not fun to pay, but that's part of it.

I got a phone call solicitation from Finance of America's loan officer. I had gone online looking at some lending providers and Finance of America goes to everybody when you do that. I availed of their service and there were a few hang-ups, but we got them all worked out. All in all, the process took about a month. The process was all right. I didn't have any problem with it, except that at the end of it. I had asked for a settlement statement showing where all the money went when the thing was settled. I think I'm entitled to have that but nobody ever sent me one. That aside, the loan officer that I worked with was pretty good.

I was talking to an AAG person then I received a lot of different calls from different agencies doing reverse mortgages. I settled on the ones that I felt were gonna be best for us. I went with Finance of America Reverse over the rest as I liked their policy better than the other ones that I was looking into. The process went a lot smoother than things were gonna go and it took maybe two months total after everything. Everything has gone smoothly. I'm really glad that we chose to go this direction. It's very beneficial for us.

I wanted to reduce my monthly expenses and have cash to do home improvements. I sought a reverse mortgage and the process at Finance of America was horrible due to the requirements in New York. We started the process and it was put on hold because New York instituted rules and regulations that reverse mortgage companies had to adjust to. Finance of America adjusted and I met the new requirements. All in all, the process took about five months. The loan officer who worked with me was great. I've never come across somebody so patient. I could imagine what she was putting with. While the closing costs were ridiculous, the interest rate I got was great.

I'm getting on in years and I was looking for a way to get some equity out of my home. The numbers presented by Finance of America Reverse were ahead of the other two companies that I looked at. I spent a lot of time looking at their options and their rep Francesca helped me all the way. She was friendly and knowledgeable. There was a lot more paperwork involved in the process than I would have ever imagined but it all went through quickly and smoothly. I got a fair amount of equity out through them. I'm very pleased with my experience with Finance of America.

Finance of America offers the best rate and terms. But the application process for our refinance took four months and I was really unhappy with the long timeframe. That wasn't FoA's fault and why the underwriter from the government demanded two appraisals is beyond me. The rep we got was great. The terms we got are so much better than the terms I had before and what any other company offered me.

We were very happy with our experience. But especially we enjoyed our interaction with Tim **. TIM made the experience so much better and I there were stressful times, but Tim got us through it. I think he called us everyday and we got addicted to his calls and we miss him. Overall Finance of America Reverse was a excellent experience!
