The people I spoke with at Finance of America Reverse were very nice and there was this one lady, Melissa, and she was great. If I had a question or wondered how it was going, she was there. She was always very positive and not pushy at all, and I had a good feeling. The rates and terms were the same as the other reverse mortgage that I had a couple of years ago but I was a little surprised I didn't get more money because the housing industry has gone sky high. We all know it's gonna fall because it did before and I got about 5,000. My home was valued at 270 and went up to 320. I was surprised that it wasn't more, but that's okay.

I'm 83 years old and we were doing a reverse mortgage. We refinanced it and Oli, a young man from San Diego, California, helped me through the steps of doing that. He did a great job and he was a nice guy. Four months later, we’re now moving and I’m in the process of doing another reverse mortgage on the new home. I'm working with a gentleman in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Matthew, who has done a fantastic job. Everybody I've ever talked with at Finance of America Reverse has been perfect. I've been in the insurance business for 40 some odd years and this is the best people I've ever dealt with in my life. The application and the underwriting process was smooth and going through it a few months ago and going through it again, it was the same.

The application process with Finance of America Reverse took a couple of days and then, it took a week for someone to do an appraisal. The rep was a good guy. He was there when I needed to get a hold of him to ask questions. I got a low rate and I have no problem with it. Everybody I know is terrified of reverse mortgage and the more I’m in it, the less I’m afraid. I get a little letter every month so far. It was hard to get the insurance premiums picked up and that didn't happen for three months. But everything else worked.

I saw Finance of America Reverse's ad on the internet and I liked what I saw. Then, I called the number and I liked the salesperson, Camille. But we had a lot of problems. I'm in a condo, so we had to get the condo approved by HUD for a reverse mortgage and that took a lot of effort. But we got through it. Then, they used the wrong form for the reverse mortgage and we had to start all over again. They used the one for a single family house, not a single family condo. What could go wrong did go wrong but it wasn't so bad because the salesperson was understanding, helpful, and explained everything that happened. We started in November and we closed in July. That was a long time but I could see that they were working through the problems. Aside from that, the whole process was done over the phone and over the internet. I'm used to going to visit bankers in their offices but I was able to overcome that problem as well.

The one local provider in town had a lot higher rate compared to Finance of America Reverse. The process with Finance of America took a little too long because we had to have two appraisals. The application and underwriting process took six months. Every time they say it was good to go, the underwriting wanted something else done. Our rep, Ryan, told us, that doesn't happen normally but we happened to be one of the lucky ones.
We have a unique property because we're on the river. There isn’t a lot of comparisons and I can understand that part. The second appraisal came out to be higher than the first. If Century was going to go with the first one, they needed to stick with just the person on the first appraisal. But Century had both appraisers come out again. There should not be two appraisals and waiting on two different appraisers then still coming in with the lowest one, which was the first one.
With the process getting stuck in underwriting and having to have two appraisals, the timeline was doubled. That was annoying and frustrating. There were two different appraisers and what one appraiser called for, the other one didn't. That aside, Ryan was great. He knew that we were getting frustrated and he understood that. He answered any questions we had at any time and he was usually right on top of it all. We had to take a counseling course over the phone with someone named Lou and that helped. She was really good and thorough. Right now, we're all done and we don't have a house payment. We had a couple of extra doggie bills and a couple of extra hospital bills. That worked great. I like not having a monthly payment.

I already had my reverse mortgage with Finance of America Reverse and so I did a refi with them. The guy I had explained things when I had doubts. He was very encouraging and he kept up too. He never left me wondering. He would call me before I'd call him and he always answered. It greatly reduced my interest rate and my MIP. It was something I couldn't afford to not do. I would advise people to call Finance of America Reverse.

I hated the process of getting a reverse mortgage so much. I will never do that again. The federal government took way too long. Almost 200 documents to sign and to initial. It's insane. On top of that, they were supposed to have done the evaluation on my house by February the 10th. It was not until the middle of May that they finally gave a judgement. It was extremely frustrating and irritating. Because of such, I will never, ever, do that again.
The rep from Finance of America Reverse was very cooperative and frustrated as much as I was. Because what they did, they turn right around, and not only did they want one inspection, they wanted two, charging me twice for it. But it has nothing to do with the personnel of Finance of America Reverse. It has everything to do with the government, the way they handle it. And I'm not finished yet with them. I still got to get that inspector out here to look at the house again.

The process with Finance of America went very well. They worked just as very well to get it accomplished. However, it took a little longer than I had hoped. But that was because we had a house in a trust and I could not find a copy of my trust. We had one lawyer said he would work with me. After a few days, then I called a different lawyer. So, that wasn't because of Finance's part, that was because of the trust and our lawyer didn't follow through with me.

The process with Finance of America was long and drug out and it just took forever. But the rep I worked with was very good. I got the impression that her hands were tied in a lot of things. I did the reverse mortgage because I wanted to paint my house and do my floor, but in the end, Finance of America Reverse paid $6,000 and they could've given a little bit more than that. When you do a $6,000, you don't have the money to do what you really want to do with the house. But other than that, the rep I dealt with was very polite and he explained what I needed to know. Linda, the rep, was magnificent. She took care of everything and was right on top of every single little item. We didn't have one minute's worth of trouble. I was amazed at the cost of closing and there were some challenges with the process in that the appraiser didn't even come and wrote wrong information on our property, wrong pictures of the wrong house, etcetera. Finance of America Reverse wouldn't change their mind on what they offered but it was close enough to what we had originally talked about that we accepted the offer.
I'm hoping and praying that they're not going to rapidly increase the rate and terms because it's an adjustable rate. It's already gone up once but I'm glad there is a cap. If there had not been the 7% cap, we would not have accepted the mortgage at all. We closed on a Friday. The lady came out and we signed all the paperwork. On Saturday, my husband had a massive stroke. So I had the funds available to do whatever we needed done. God knew we were going to need it. So, I'm very pleased that we had made the decision.

The whole process with Finance of America Reverse took almost a year. I called up every four months and asked what was going on. They would say that they were still waiting for final approvals. My mother and father both passed away and they needed documentation to that effect. This went on for months and months. So I finally went to Providence to get death certificates and sent them in. The next thing I know, everything was approved.
I needed money. I had probably $15,000 worth of credit card debts. I had taken out a loan with my credit union to pay off all the taxes and stuff on the house. So, the next step is to get rid of all these debts completely. I wasn't about to go back to work. So, I took out a reverse mortgage and paid off all my bills. After I took out the loan, I put a new roof on the house and put all the painting and trim work around the house. The value of my house increased by almost $60,000 in three years. So, I went down to the reverse mortgage. I needed to borrow more money. I had a few things I needed to do around the house.
Once, I went to a bank to get a loan to do home improvement stuff but they wouldn't even touch me because I had a reverse mortgage. So, I had to go back to Finance of America and convince them that I wanted to refinance it. So, we did it. It was 142,000-something, which paid off the reverse mortgage I had. So, they've sent me $14,900 and a year from now, the rest of the reverse mortgage will kick in. My only problem with Finance of America Reverse is they don't qualify for too many loans. I went for 20-some years without having a new car. I had to lease a car and I got the lease arrangements down to about $300 a month, which I was content with, even with whatever money I had coming in. I have a very small pension from Sears Roebuck where I worked for 22 years, and I had whatever money I got from Social Security.
My only problem is, last year, I got my statement and it seems like Finance of America Reverse arbitrarily takes money out of the value of my house without even asking me that they're going to be doing this. And this is ongoing, it's part of my reverse mortgage. They put me on a leaser account . Supposedly, right after they finally approved my loan, everything I had was paid off. It had been paid off for months. The next thing I know, I was going to closing and they said they wanted to take money and pay my homeowners insurance. They want to take money to pay off my taxes. I said that these things are all paid and they've been paid off for months. So, I told the lawyer who was handling the closing that I don't owe anything to the town for taxes. And I have not been behind on my homeowner's insurance.

It was a long process with Finance of America Reverse. Fortunately, I had a lot of help. Joe was the agent and he walked me through this whole thing from beginning to end. I didn't know what I was doing. He sent me paperwork to sign. I had to contact the bank and there were a lot of details that were involved. He recommended that I get a counselor. He sent me a whole list of counselors that are available throughout the country and he recommended a couple. He said I can pick whoever I want. I just chose one and she was great and was a bipartisan person. She wasn't advocating one way or the other. She just gave me information about the paperwork that I got from Finance of America, so she was very good. I felt comfortable talking to her. She gave us a lot of advice. Joe also got an appraisal for us. A person came down. He was a notary. Had to sign more papers there.
Initially, when I first got hold of Joe, all the paperwork was right way. I was getting paperwork the next day. He was calling me almost every day. Initially, it was great. But I didn't expect it to be over a couple of weeks. But he said once it was out of his hands, and he had to go the other departments, it took a little longer. But it wasn't his fault. It was the procedure of this company.
There were two things that I didn't really care for. This happened at the very end. When we were almost completed with the whole thing, Joe said that was gonna happen. First of all, I'm still responsible for my real estate taxes for the house and that's fine. I called the bank. The bank sent me the escrow for the six months that they were taking money out of my payment. I already had the money. Then Joe said, “Also, the company's gonna pay your house insurance.” But I don't like anybody paying my bills, because a third party is involved, it always brings problems. Sure enough, it did. It took about a month to square this whole thing away.
Our taxes are due July 1st and January 1st. So, the July 1st one has to be paid, and I had the money. But Joe said, “No. Our company will pay that.” I said, “Why are they doing that?” He said, “they just do that as well.” But, here it is, at the end of July and they haven't paid it yet. I called him, “I don't wanna be judged for late payment, ‘cause I already have the money, but I didn't pay them yet.” He said, “They're gonna pay at the end of the month.” I said, “Okay.” So, I'm waiting for next week. I'll call him again and see if they've paid it.
What was good about Joe was he didn't wanna tell me everything all at once to bog me down, because if I heard everything all at once, I would have been totally confused. He went step by step with me the whole way. I really was pleased with that and that was why I was comfortable with it. ‘Cause this whole procedure is new to me. I've never done this before. I was grateful for the help ‘cause I could never have done it by myself.
I liked the way he always said at the very end, “You call me any time. I'm there for you no matter what question you have.” You don't get that kind of service in companies today. The guidance was very good right from the beginning because the minute I got him on the phone, he put me at ease. I also like that from the very beginning, he just told me the figures and the figures were what they were. As the closing costs and all of that, it's expensive. But I know it's not an easy process. It cost money to do it. But I was happy with the company, the way I chose, and I was happy with the service that I got until the very end.

I worked with Taylor from Finance of America Reverse. He helped me through the reverse mortgage process. I was very thankful for his assistance. He walked me through the process day by day, answered all my questions, and followed up with everything that needed to be followed up. He told me exactly what he needed to do. When I accomplished that, he reviewed all of the information that I provided and gave me some good feedback on that. I relied on all that information until finally we got through the final process.
I was on vacation during the final month before closing, from Hawaii, where my home is located. I was in Missouri and they had all of the processing done in Missouri. I felt that would be very convenient for me, that I didn’t have to be in Hawaii before closing. The information that I provided to the company and to Taylor made it possible that he would have all of the documents already completed. They had the notary come to my place of residence here in Missouri to do the final closing. That certainly provided me some great insight as far as what the follow through is. All the documents were completed and we reviewed them during the closing process. It was in order. So, I was very pleased with that. The rates at the time were also very conducive to what I was paying on the original mortgage.

The reverse mortgage process took much too long. It should have been done in 30 days but it took the better part of three months. My rep was fine but the procedure was a real pain. The trouble is that my wife is in a nursing home and she owns half the property. She's handicapped and she can't sign her name. I gave Finance of America a copy of a power of attorney. I thought that would be enough but it wasn't. Be prepared for the length of time the process will take. It doesn't happen as quickly as you think it will or as quickly as your representative tells you. Other than that, I'm very happy with their service.

The rep of Finance of America Reverse was very helpful and we worked together right from the beginning to end. It was frustrating for her, frustrating for me and my wife, but we got it done. The end result is, we really didn't get anything that we wanted other than we don't have a mortgage payment anymore. We didn't get much cashout. We have a house that's appraised for 638 and we owed 340 on it, and they wouldn't give us $50,000 cash out so we could pay a couple of small bills and have a little reserve. There was way too much paperwork too. The guy that okays it at the very end was also a nitpicker. Just awful.

I contacted Finance of America Reverse and discovered that they charged either none or minimal origination fee. They were somewhat cheaper than the competition. The interest rates were roughly comparable. The process went smoothly too. I worked with a lady named Linda and she was very good to deal with. She kept in touch and facilitated the whole process. If I had something that could have gone smoother, it had to do with the property appraisal and the closing. During the COVID thing, it complicated all of that.
They did the appraisal. They sent it in and whoever reviews those things decided that there should be a second appraisal. So, they sent somebody out to do the second appraisal and there was some difference in the amount. Then there had been an inconsistency in the square footage of the house. One appraisal was giving me certain square footage, and the other appraisal had different square footage. Then they had to get that resolved, and they had to get on the same page with regard to square footage. It was a kink in the hose. But I don't know that it was Finance of America’s fault. It may have been the fault of the appraiser. They use independent appraisers. It’s more their problem than Finance of America’s. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend anyone using Finance of America.

Working with Finance of America Reverse was wonderful. I have a very positive ending to it all. There were some issues in slowness, but part of that was my condo had to have a single unit approval. So, there was an extra step. It made it a little longer, but they were good. They handled all that for me. They submitted the paperwork. I had to get a lot of paperwork from the condo association and forwarded all this. At some point, my condo association personnel was forwarding information to them too to help get that accomplished.

My reverse was already with Finance. So, when the interest rate decreased, and I kept getting notifications about it from all these loan companies, that's when I started looking into it. I did not know that I could do it with Finance. So, I contacted and found out what others were doing. As I was about to make a decision, I thought, “Well, why don't I contact Finance? They already have one on my house. They have all the info.” So, I contacted their customer service and found that Finance would do that. It took a while though.
I thought the initial contact after I got finally got in touch with someone was going to be okay. After we worked out what the interest was going to be and all of that, I thought, “Okay, that sounds really good, so I'll stick with Finance." So, I canceled with the other company and I told them why and what I was doing. They were okay with it because I was still within that window. I started with Finance. My initial contact with the person was okay. I did what he wanted. I called and got the counselor because the certification was with the counselor. I had already completed that and paid for it with the other one. So, I told him about that. He said, “Well, okay, can you get the report for me?” I thought, “Wait a minute. That's really what you need to do.” But I said, “Okay.” I did contact them and ask them for the report and they were saying, “Well they need to do it. Why are you doing their work?” I went, “Okay. So, what should I tell him?”
I called my initial person back and I said, “Okay, this is the info I got. They said you need to contact them.” Then, the individual that Finance contracted with was sent out to bring me the copy of the contract, and all of that was awful. I felt unsafe. I did call and told them, “Hey, this person is here.” I asked the person, “Who are you? And do you have a business card?” He was resistant to that and was telling me they don't need to do that. I said, “Well, I'm not gonna let somebody in my house when they can't even do that.” Then the person that I had been working with contacted the company and gave me the name. But I was like, “Okay, we don't want to delay this.” So, I called my neighbor across the street and I said, “I do have an individual in my home. Just letting you know.” I've never experienced that before.
When that individual got ready to leave, he made a comment. So, I asked him to leave my home. He kind of stood around on my porch. He was in my kitchen. I have an open concept, so he was kind of sitting there and I said, “I need you to leave now.” I walked to my front door and opened it. He got his stuff together and proceeded to go to the door. Then, he was going to say something. I told him, “Before you say anything. I'm going to tell you why I'm asking you to leave. Just so you know. I don't like the style. I don't like the content of your communication, regardless of what you're saying. That's the reason why. You need to go. If you don't go, I am going to call the police. I have a security system and all I have to do is buzz it.” So, he finally left. Then, the representative called and I told him that they really need to check whomever they contract with and maybe talk to some other people. He was all apologetic and even sent me some flowers.
It was difficult to actually get in touch with someone, but I was persistent. I would call and leave a message asking simple questions like, ‘Okay, can you give me a status report? What's going on? When will it be finalized?” Initially, the person I was working with had told me one amount. I was getting emails from the company. I just didn't know who these people were. So, I was calling and saying, “Okay, I got an email from someone, and this is the name. And they're asking me for information about my trust. And that's not information that they need to know.” It really got messy. So, I finally got the representative. I talked to my attorney. The attorney said, “They don't need all that information. But here's what we're going to send them from the trust since this other individual is insisting that they need this.” So, we got that. It was not smooth at all.
The original quote on the interest rate stayed the same but when it came time for the appraisal on my home, I had my own appraisal with the other company. They had appraised. By this time, we were already months into it and my home appraised with 625 with the other company. Whoever they used said it was 500. I said, “That's impossible.” I called and it took another two weeks to get in touch with the representative. I said, “This is not an accurate appraisal of my home. First of all, whoever you got this from, they must have gotten this from the builder. This is how my home looked after they completed building it, which took them a year. This is not the way my home looks now.”
He said, “I'll look into that.” Nothing ever happened with that. By that time, I was tired of it. I thought, “Well, okay, as long as the interest rate is down.” I was not looking to refinance to get funds. So, that piece of it was not that important to me. I was looking to decrease the interest but because of the decrease in the appraisal value, the funds were decreased. But I didn't find that out until after everything was closed.
I'm making decisions on what I really want to do. That was miscommunication. I asked the representative, “How is it that you don't know the status? You don't know what's going on with my particular loan?" He said, “Well, they have a meeting once a week.” What I got from that conversation with him was he was strictly a salesman. In other words, his input was initial. Initially, he talked to the individual, got information, and then he sent their process, He sent this information throughout to whomever in the company. Then, he more or less didn't have anything else to do with it. He always needed to talk to somebody.
There should be a consistent individual. If there is someone that you made contact with, and that individual has communicated, “Okay, I'm going to be working with you throughout this whole process,” then that's what they need to do. If you have questions or if something comes up, that individual should respond. They should find the answer to your question. If they don't know, then they need to say they don't know. I really became suspicious of Finance of America because when I would call the rep's cell phone, it would go over to a voicemail. It never went through. I thought, “If I didn't have such a low-interest rate, which is what I was looking for, I would never do business with this company again.” This has been not a good experience for me.

Regarding the appraisal, The appraiser is an independent non affiliated third party. They do not work for us and due to compliance regulations we do not communicate with them or contract them ourselves. We are not allowed to communicate with them directly, only through another third party so we have no influence on their results. They are certified to inspect and evaluate your property in adherence with FHA guides. We are in the same position as you when it comes to value determination. We rely on their value results and in your case we delivered an objection to support your estimate of value.

The company that we had originally written a reverse mortgage through, AAG, is no longer certified to write in Massachusetts. The servicing company was Finance of America Reverse. The application process was really arduous. It was much more difficult than the first time around. The in-house people needed to have more experience with what they were doing because several times we had to redo things that they hadn't processed correctly or they hadn't told us about to begin with. It just went on and on. It was not a pleasant experience. It took a lot more time than it ought to have.
Nicole, the rep, was quite good. She was very pleasant and quite knowledgeable. She was acting based on what the underwriting department gave her, and I think that was the problem. They had people that were not as conversant with the situation and need to have more experience. I don't know what the problem was but the interfacing between the processing group and the representative wasn't the greatest. The underwriter, which requires them to send an appraiser out, could have been smoother. I think that the house itself may have been underpriced in terms of fair market value by possibly close to 10%. It troubled my wife, myself and my family. I don't know if they wanted to give what I think is what I thought the fair market value should have been. I’ve conversed with a number of real estate brokers and reputable agencies, and they, too, felt that it was understated by maybe not 10%, but more than 5%.
Finance of America Reverse could have done a better job unless they just didn't want to extend the credit to the degree that we thought it should have been. So it was a disappointment. We thought that we would have been able to accomplish what we set out to do with a lot less time and a lot less snags in the process. It took close to three months to get this done, which was way beyond what we thought. There was a lot of paperwork and a lot of going to different places to get stuff. I thought a lot of it was really overdone, and I felt that the return in effect for the equity that we're looking to get was understated. When the process left Nicole's hands, it could have been handled a lot more expeditiously. And it was not a great experience for us compared to having done business with AAG.

We signed the same form at least three times. I signed forms for him, and then there were the same forms and the package that we DocuSigned. I’ve never known why they can't be as streamlined. Other than that, I thought the rates were great.

The rep I worked with was very good. Helped me in every aspect. He stayed in contact, answered questions, gave clear, precise information upfront, during and after. The entire process was very smooth and good. However, the underwriter had so many questions. They asked for my HOA dues, which I had already provided. I provided them a copy of the receipt. They said, "No. We want three years going back." So then I had to go on my files and find three receipts for three years. They did another thing similar to that and I thought that was silly. But I figured they put you through that to see how willing you are to work with them. But Finance of America Reverse did an excellent job and I really appreciate it.

The application process with Finance of America Reverse can be a royal pain. There was a biggest hang-up. I was born in England. It took three months because somebody in Finance of America wanted the department in England to put it in writing that my pension was going to be continuous until I die. This took three months to get straightened out. It was like during the COVID. You can't get them on the phone, and they won't give you personal information with an email. It was back and forth. It was horrible. But everything’s straightened out. What I've got now is very good. I’m very happy with it. I would highly recommend Finance of America Reverse, especially with somebody in my position. I don't have any family here. I don't have to worry about them being upset because they're not gonna have any money when I die.

During that counseling application, it was suggested to us that we were paying too much and that we might want to consider other lenders. Then, I went online and looked up the five top reverse mortgage companies. Finance of America was one of them. Two of them didn't answer their phone and one of them wouldn't give information without formal application.
Then I hit Finance of America and their rep, Toby. He was very forthcoming and said he would send me an estimate whether I applied or not. Finance of America Reverse's process seemed to be a bit drawn-out and took five weeks to complete. But the person I worked with answered all my questions right away. I have a very high need to know and he provided me with tons of information. His name was Tim and he explained everything as many times as I wanted him to. It was almost like going to a class and he was an exceptional officer. A reverse mortgage is more complicated than a regular one. But as long as I was working with Tim, I felt everything went fine. He even had a phone number that I could call so I wouldn't have to use my telephone, which I have to pay to use.
Tim took me through each step and it seemed like it just worked out really well. I was a bit nervous because I've never done anything like this before and I wasn't sure in the beginning whether I was doing the right thing. But I'm very happy that I did. Initially, I had a choice between two companies and the rep from the first company I talked to was nice. The process with Finance of America took over a year. The first approval officer didn't want to approve the loan. My first application expired because that person took so long and it had to be re-initiated. It was assigned to somebody else and it was finally approved. I had to have the place appraised twice and I had to have my counseling done three times. I would have dissed the company a long time ago. But Finance of America Reverse was the only company in the world that will lend in Massachusetts to a house that doesn't qualify for an FHA loan.
I liked Autumn very much. I was dealing with her as my frontline person of contact and she was very good. I also liked the person who is now in charge of customer relations, now that the loan has been issued. But I do not like the first approval officer I had. I wanted an FHA loan at about 3% and as a revolving line of credit. Finance of America ended up having to take up a large chunk at 7.5%. Overall, I am satisfied with the ultimate result but I'm not happy with the process. It should not have taken from February 2020 to April 2021.

I did not like the fact that we had to go through two appraisals. We were the unlucky one out of five homes selected randomly and we had to have two appraisals that were paid out of our pocket. Also, it took so much extra time. It was very stressful. We didn't know if we were going to be able to close on time and the sellers had other people that wanted to buy the house. The sellers were not too sure that this loan would go through and they didn't want to miss out on the sale of their house. It closed within the allotted time but it was really down to the wire. If it wasn't for that second appraisal, we would have finished way ahead of time and it would have been really easy for us. That's my biggest gripe about what we went through. If we didn't get this house, we would have to start from square one again, and trying to buy a house here in Idaho is very tough.

I was very impressed, much more so than the first original reverse mortgage I did with them. It gives me a good peace of mind to know that I'm with a company that treats me so well. I would highly recommend Finance of America.

The rep did a very good job. He answered my questions, and he was responsive. I had initially worked with another one that wouldn't return calls. I gave up on the process for a while, and then came back to it, ended up with this individual, and everything worked out great. The rate was good too. Hoped for it being a little better, but it was a reverse mortgage product, which probably carries a little higher rate. We were hoping for a little higher valuation, but that's out of our hands. The process was a bit long, but overall, I'm satisfied. Work with the originator that I worked with, and everything would be great.

We were misled in the beginning and told that we could do a LISA which is Finance of America Reverse pays for our property tax and our insurance. Initially, we're told that it would cover it for forever. And then we came back with another saying, "No. It wasn't. It would only be covered for X amount of time." And then they came back. That was over and over, having a hard time getting what we wanted and ended up just taking what they would give us. Because it kept lingering on. Then they sent a notary out to do the paperwork and we signed all of it. They gave us a list of where we were supposed to send the money, how much to close. And it turned out that that went to the old loan, not to the new loan. They didn't find that for quite a while so that made our paperwork null and void. They got another one out and then found out where the proper place to send the amount. That was all frustrating.
But now, the most frustrating thing is because we're on the LISA, what it stands for, they're supposed to be paying our property tax. And I got a bill saying the property tax hasn't been paid and it's overdue. So, I've been trying to call them. I also emailed. I finally got someone to call me back today and he said he would check into it and let me know. The initial woman, the salesperson, was wonderful. And she tried her best to follow up and get things done the way they promised. But she didn't have the power to do that. And this last young man that I talked to tried to help, at least called me back and was very helpful in trying to find out why they haven't paid our property tax. So, there have been two people that were professional. And then the people that have the power don't do a very good job. I wouldn't recommend them.

AAG didn't know what the hell they were doing. They didn't make sense and they couldn't answer my questions directly. They would always have to get back with someone else before they got back to me. It drove me nuts. They wanted one thing after another, financial records, you name it. Almost two years of aggravation. On the other hand, Finance of America Reverse's rep was good. He knew what he was talking about and made everything easy. And within six weeks, we settled.
AAG wanted me to do another financial projection for the next six months or a year. I said, “Why am I doing this? My overhead is lower than my Social Security.” I talked to Matt from Finance of America and I said, “I got this business.” And he said, “Oh, no, we don't need it. Your Social Security is fine.” I said, “Well, that's what I've been telling AAG for two years.” And he said the more information I throw at underwriting, the more it gets bogged down. So it went through 1, 2, 3. Unbelievable. And everything happened exactly as he said it would happen. The guy is a genius. He told me that AAG's product for the reverse mortgage was their patented product and AAG paid a fee to use that. I was very impressed.

The application to closing, the process with Finance of America Reverse took somewhere around two to three months. My loan rep was very available and responsive. He gave very clear and detailed answers so that I would understand the background of the answer and make sure I was making informed decisions. The rates and terms were acceptable and competitive. Because of the pandemic, Finance of America went out of their way to make things easy for me. My only suggestion is that in the information that is provided, they should have a graphic of a general timeline of the different steps and it could be on a one-page chart. That way, I don't start tripping over myself. I understand what they're doing, what I'm supposed to be doing, and what happens in chronological order.

I had been working for some time with a different company to do a reverse mortgage then there was a big snag. I was at wit's end with the company that I was dealing with and ended up using Finance of America Reverse as a result. In the beginning, before the agent at Finance of America Reverse got my blessing, he was proactive and stayed in contact. He didn't give up.
Everything turned out better with Finance of America Reverse than when I started originally. I had to get three counseling sessions because so much time had elapsed that I had to take them again. I had to pay for three appraisals and it's 700, 800-bucks-a-pop. It was a very long and expensive process. When I finally got to Finance of America Reverse, I was at the one-yard line with the other company who couldn't get it over the line. When I gave it to Finance of America Reverse, I dropped it in their lap like a Christmas present all wrapped and ready-to-go. All they had to do was move it from the one-yard across the goal line. They did the touchdown. There were a couple little quirks in there but nothing of major significance. They were very professional, knew what they were doing and executed expeditiously.

I called Finance of America Reverse over a year ago and nobody ever reached back out to me. One day, the phone rang and it was Andrew, the rep that did our reverse mortgage. I figured it was a done deal. I wasn't going to be able to do it and wished we would have done it at that time I called because I had to refinance due to a financial situation. It would have been a lot better. He was curious to see why nothing was ever done and said, “Let me see what I can do.” He was a wonderful man. He told me to call him if I ever needed anything.
The appraisal on the property was low so it was disputed and they raised it up quite a bit. I had a real estate agent myself out there and he's told me, “Your house is well worth $140.” They did another appraisal and I ended up with the guy that first bid it and raised it to $212. The new appraisal was higher than that, but Finance of America Reverse doesn't do that. They go with the lower of the two that's why it took so long.

I couldn't do it until I reached my 62nd birthday so we started the process about two months early. We had plenty of time to go through all the application process. Whenever I called him, he always picked up. There was only one time it went to voicemail and he called me right back. This is a super busy time for them but he was always there for us so I appreciated that. Finance of America was good to work with. They rebated the MIP which was a lot of money while the other company was going to charge us for that.

Cindy, the person that I've been talking to, is very knowledgeable and always available when I call. If she is on the phone, she would text me back that she'll call me back. That's really helped. My complaint was I didn't understand why they needed to have the statement from the homeowners. We would not have been in our house for 26 years if we don't pay the homeowners. I told the rep I didn't have that and that I could give them statements from the bank that I paid. The rep said they were trying to get it because the underwriter wanted it.
Another thing was we’ve just been giving my social security number over the phone then they wanted a copy of my social security because the copy was not legible enough. That's the only social security card that I have since I came here in the United States and that was a long time ago. After I went through the trouble of calling Social Security, looking online, filing and paying it so I have a new card that is legible for them to read, they said, “No, no. I didn't realize that we have a portal.” Other than those, Finance of America Reverse was okay. The meeting with the money management was good. I didn’t feel the rep was too knowledgeable at first. I also had trouble with him returning my calls. I’d tell him when to call and he never followed up on it. After a while, he finally got the message, started following through and we got back on page one again. But there were some things that I was very unhappy about and if I’d had it to do over again, had I had known these things from the beginning, I probably would not have done it. The appraiser also told me that he would be fair and square but he wasn't.
Finance of America Reverse could have been a little more informative going through this whole process and told me exactly, step by step, what was gonna happen instead of just throwing all this information at me at one time when they were way above my head and I had no clue as to what they were telling me. I'm not completely satisfied with them. I'm not satisfied with that thing they do about the line of credit either. I don't think it's fair. If they set that money aside for you to do what they asked you to do, then why you have to go through loops and hoops to get reimbursed for that money when you need that money? They say I gotta wait a year to get it. If you need the money, you need the money. That's the whole purpose in doing this.

I am sorry to hear that your experience with Finance of America Reverse was not ideal. We appreciate your feedback on the lack of communication you received and will definitely take this to heart for improving our call center process.

She was personable and caring. She was also knowledgeable and kind. If it wasn't for her, I would have left Finance of America Reverse because there was so many hiccups on the last month. Diana was the best part of the process.
It took four months to get the loan, which was very disappointing. There was a lot of mistakes made by the underwriter. During the underwriting process, they needed some documents from the IRS but they didn't request those till the last minute, so it held the loan up a couple of weeks. Finance of America Reverse wanted some things that were totally ridiculous. They wanted me to supply leases with my tenants. I don't give any tenants' lease because it's better for the landlord. I don't bother the tenants at all. Another thing that they wanted from me was a bank statement for the last three months showing my tenants' deposits into my account. It was stupid. I did supply it because I went online and I found all this information.
If Finance of America already has the client, why were they making the client show them all of this information again? If I was not a customer, I could understand. But being that I was a customer, they had a lot of little rules and regulations that they wanted to implement. Those should have been implemented with somebody else and not with me. I didn't like that and Finance of America almost lost me.
They were pinning me into a corner with all their nitpicking. I could have gone to another company very easily. But I felt good about my rates and also, the agent Miranda kept me on board. She held the deal together and put everything back into perspective. She was very personable and knowledgeable. She wanted to get this job done and we did.
If Finance of America is dealing with somebody who is already a client and they are doing a refi with them and they're looking to lower their rate, Finance of America should treat them with a little bit more respect. They bought my mortgage and it was a satisfactory one. My mortgage reverse was a plus for them. We had approximately $300,000 and the house is worth over a million. Finance of America was not gonna lose anything. It was gonna be a good deal for them so they should have thought twice before they pushed somebody up against the wall. I helped my mother-in-law obtain a reverse mortgage so I was quite familiar with the process. I gave volumes of support documents to my mother-in-law as to the appraised value of the house. The lady from Finance of America was excellent with her coordination. She kept me up to date and did everything she was supposed to do to carry out her responsibility.
The only thing was with the appraisal. The appraiser was an independent real estate agent. It's Covid and he did not visit inside of the house and did not see the major improvements worth $150,000. We were all vaccinated and I asked him to come over but he wouldn't. He was totally incompetent. He used the lowest possible appraised value rate in town. He did an aerial photograph and that created a major issue on the cash requirements.
The house was worth $730,000. He appraised the house at 600. I got a separate appraisal from Coldwell Bankers and they appraised it at 730. Their appraiser went inside the house and she saw the major improvements. I sent the appraiser articles that Glen Rock was the second most habitable and desirable area in the state of New Jersey. He ignored that as well as the other appraisal values on the street. We had to take the low value because my mother-in-law was desperate. We could have appealed but that would have been another year. The low value created problems with the credit. The appraisal issue aside, I would tell friends and family to use Finance of America but would try to get as much information from them on who the appraiser is going to be. Certain appraisers aren't qualified. I would like to have that recommended by the Finance of America.

Finance of America was one of my first contact over a year ago and at that time, I wasn't ready for a reverse mortgage but the salesperson stuck with me. We stayed in contact as things changed and it became more accessible and agreeable. And so, it's just a long-term contract. My interest is at 2.21% at the moment. I love to see it at 1.95 or something like that, which is where the 15-year finance is right now. But as far as I'm concerned, for right now, that's fine.
Finance of America did essentially what I understand the law would require them to do. The appraiser came out and did an appraisal. I had a conversation with him, but then all of a sudden, he wasn't available to me and he wasn't available to the bank. This guy just didn't communicate. So the process was screwed up. The bank said that it would come eventually. Then when it finally did get there, the appraisal didn't meet the standards that were necessary for a reverse mortgage. So, it was another month or two. Finance of America said that we needed a new appraisal so they had to go through the process all over again to get the next appraiser to do an appropriate appraisal. That delayed the whole process for five months.
If I had needed that reverse mortgage to happen for me to have access to the funds so that I could do what I needed to do like pay taxes or things like that, it would really put me in a hole. Fortunately, I have the wherewithal to be able to go through that and ride that out. With the actual mechanics of doing the operation, Finance of America Reverse performed very well. But the system that's currently in place is wrong and it's not effective. Finance of America should fire that company because they really didn't perform. Also, there wasn't a daily or at least a weekly communication coming from the bank to me as to what the holdup was. I had to fight that through to find out what was there.

Before I went through bankruptcy, I had a FICO score of 804. I knew that it was going to take some time for me if I ever get back to that high number, but because of Matt's diligence and eagerness to see if he can help in any way, I decided to work with him. I had to close my retail stores and file bankruptcy and the person that I was dealing with at first said, “It has to be two years.” I met that. Then he said something about one of my timeshares have put a maintenance fee on my account, which they did. He said that I would have to wait until February, two years after it was on there. Some nonsense. I totally dismissed it. When I talked to Matt, he said, “How long have you had the timeshare?” I said, “probably 20 years, and this is the first problem I've ever had.”
Matt said, “Why don't you call them and ask them to remove it?” Because I didn't owe the company anything. I called them and and within two weeks, the fee was gone. That was one thing he did for me. The other thing is, my business accounts and my personal credit cards went into bankruptcy, but one of my loans was still showing up. The other finance company didn't mention that to me. Maybe they didn't use that collection agency, but Matt noticed it and he said that there's going to be a problem if that $18,000 is not cleared. I said, “I assure you, it shouldn't be there.” I reached out to PNC. PNC reached out to the three credit bureaus, and they removed it. Had Matt not mentioned that or had he not offered that suggestion or tell me how I could clear up these errors, they would still be sitting there and still impacting my credit.
Once I got involved with the loan officer, Matt, I totally disregarded the other one I started working with. Matt made the process run so smoothly and he answered all my questions and concerns. As far as the rates, I'm glad I got them now and not later because the rates have gone up. One of my mortgages is 7.9 to Bank of America. My first mortgage was 4.9. I explained to Matt, if I want to start putting some money on it anyway to keep the principal down or to keep things down, I love the idea that I can do that. It'll go back into an account and he said I'd get 4% interest on it. I can't get that much interest if it's sitting in a savings account.
There's also a $50 million project around the corner from my house and in a couple of years, the value of my property is going to shoot up. I've watched it shoot up in the last six months since this process started, but I went on with the appraisal amount that Finance of America gave me, because I knew that in a couple of years, it would appraise for some more money. I asked Matt, “In about five years or so, what if I don't want to go up and down three flights of steps? And I want to go get a condo or I want to get a rancher?” He explained to me how that works, that I could go back into a reverse mortgage. I could sell my house or I could go into a different type of mortgage and rent my house and still go back into a reverse mortgage.
I'm not supposed to discuss reverse mortgages when I go to people's houses but I am famous for saying, “I just did a reverse mortgage. I'm happy with it.” If they ask me what company or how I did it, I always leave them my phone number and tell them to give me a call because I don't want to be at somebody's house doing a refinance, discussing my reverse mortgage. I have left my number with several people and I plan on doing more and more referrals because elderly people don't have a good understanding about reverse mortgages.
I even told Matt to pass my information on to the company because I was happy with the person who came to see me and did my closing. However, I wasn't happy with the first person I was given. I didn't like that I never got a confirmation that the lady will come and when I called her, there was no message on the phone. It was just a busy tone and then went straight to, “Leave a message.” I told Matt I thought that was very unprofessional.
People have myths about reverse mortgages, but for me, I love it. I'm glad I got one. I've been a title insurance producer for 10 years now and I've closed on 30 reverse mortgages. Some of the people tell me that the process takes so long and the loan officer doesn't keep them abreast. Matt kept me abreast of everything that was going on, how long certain things were going to take, what they were working on, and what they needed. He was awesome. I was so impressed that I talked to my uncle whose home was paid for and told him about my experience. My uncle also got a reverse mortgage and closed three weeks after I did. It was because of Matt that I went through with the process and as far as my uncle was concerned, it's the same way. He immediately agreed when they talked. He felt comfortable going forward.

I used Finance of America Reverse once before, and everything was absolutely perfect. They're thorough, professional and very quick. They kept me well informed. Everything that was going on, it was all done by phone. They were on top of everything. The only problem this year was we had to have three appraisals done. That was a bit upsetting, because I live close to a power station on a railroad track. Diana, the lady that I used, wasn't happy with having to have the three appraisals done either, but it's just one of those things that happens sometimes. Other than that, the entire company was absolutely great. I’ve been highly recommending them to all of my friends. If they ever want to get cash out of their house, to go with Finance of America.

Some of the things have changed since our previous experience too. The rates were better, and the rules were more liberal. It worked well for us.

It was a good experience, overall. The reps did very good. When it came to any questions or concerns, they always got me an answer. The one time that it took me a couple of emails and a text message to have someone get back to me, my loan officer just lost his brother, which I didn't know. I started in May and by November, they got ahold of me and told me that things hadn't gone through. I have a dug well and we were having problems getting a clean water test from it. It ended up with copper problems, and then it ended up with bacteria problems. This took a while to get that corrected. By the time we got it corrected, the six-month time period ran out, so we had to start the whole process over. I had to get another appraisal and go through everything all over again, but as it turns out, the appraisal was much higher in January than in June the year before that they did it. It was one of the benefits to COVID.
Having the insurance due shortly after the reverse mortgage was closed wasn't the best timing, but they seem to be right on the ball in taking care of any little problems that come up. I had been widowed a little over two years ago and I've been having problems getting the taxes paid. The bill comes out in August. If you don't have it paid by that next March, they put a lien on your property. If that isn't paid by the following March, they tell you that they're going to put the house into foreclosure. Finance of America got confused on my homeowner’s insurance because it was going with another company and they hadn't got paid in the same thing. My house was going into foreclosure, and they were supposed to be paying the taxes up.
I was concerned that maybe they're gonna wait until it goes into foreclosure and then buy it out from under me. I heard these bad things about reverse mortgages, so I went ahead and paid the taxes myself. It was probably a needless concern, but I'm not going to leave the door open for something bad to happen. I'd rather just pay those taxes. That way, I make sure that they're not going to be able to snatch my house out from under me. Trust them, but only to a certain degree. Go into it with your eyes open and watch for areas where you can be taken advantage of.

My loan officer was able to answer my questions accurately. And he always had an answer. He was polite and helpful. We quickly came to the conclusion that we could rely on what he was telling us, which is a major thing. Once we were able to fall under the FHA rules, it went quickly. The actual process from when the FHA rules changed at the first of the year was eight weeks. I would definitely recommend Finance of America Reverse.

He apologized and I just said, “No need.” They sent me the paperwork, I signed it, and sent it back to them. Then they got all the paperwork ready, had a notary come out and signed all of them, and she took it and sent it back to them. And then we were done. The interest rates were lower. The Finance of America Reverse rep, Randy, was answering questions like I was hoping she would, real honest. There were even a couple there that I wasn't expecting an answer and she came out and said that she didn't know. That was what I wanted to hear. I spoke to another guy at first and he was more of the national set-up but I just wasn't that impressed by him. But it was definitely easier to talk with Randy. She knew her stuff and she seemed more honest.
Randy pretty much took us by the hand and walked us through the process. Money was super tight with us and Finance of America Reverse helped us on stuff like that. I wish I've done it a long time ago. I did the reverse mortgage in the stages. We had to have the review to make sure we know what we were doing and then we just kept going with them and it worked very nice. The banks I dealt with in the past had been much worse. They were looking for reasons to fail us it seemed, and this was the opposite. Finance of America Reverse was definitely helping us. There were two signing periods where tons of paperwork had to be signed off and that got a little monotonous. But that's the way it is.

She was willing to talk to me and my brother for the questions we had. During the application process, the rep from Finance of America Reverse had to come two times to my house and I had to do paperwork. That was the only way we could do it. Everything was in a timely manner. A couple of papers weren't signed and she got them to me to have me sign them. It was missed during the time they came to my house. They had one appraisal and then, they sent another person who does HUD appraisals. That person gave me a lower appraisal than the first one I got and I didn't like that. Finance of America asked the same person to reconsider but he denied giving me a higher appraisal. He had the comparisons of the first one and the one he did, and he wouldn't change his.

I thought I'd have some problems with getting a notary, but it just went really smoothly and the notary guy was really nice. The reverse mortgage process took a little longer than I thought it would, but it was okay. The rep was very attentive and got back to me if I had any questions. He walked me through the whole process. It was a great experience all around and I was really satisfied with the terms of the loan. I was able to get a fixed-rate loan of 3.1, which was a little bit above what the other fixed rates were for conventional mortgages. If I had a variable rate mortgage and with the way that things were going in our economy, I could have been stuck with a 5% or a 7% cap and that would have really eaten into my equity quickly. So with the 3.1 fixed, no matter what happens in the market, I will be comfortable with a 3.1.

My original reverse mortgage happened back in 2012. When I was looking into refinancing, I called my reverse mortgage people, and they connected me with Finance of America. I called them and was immediately connected with Adam. He lives in Nevada and he was extremely personable. He wasn't trying to sell me anything, which is a huge perk with me. Now that I've been home for a while, I get bombarded with so many people trying to sell me things that I'm immediately sort of put off because the phone rang. But I didn't feel that way with him at all. He was down to earth and easy to talk to. I realized that doing the refinance would be a good idea, since I've had the reverse mortgage for so long and interest rates had gone down so much.
The process went extremely smoothly. The counselor that I went through was wonderful. She asked me a lot of the questions that I needed to know and the things that I wasn't aware of. She told me about how the person that I would be dealing with at Finance of America was paid, and what things he might suggest I do that makes him more money, but might not necessarily be in my own best interest. I wrote back to her at the end and told her how well it went.
You have to dredge up all that paperwork that they need and we wound up taking pictures of everything and sending it to Adam over my phone, because he could get things easily that way. It was not a good experience with the first appraiser. So Adam wound up finding us another appraiser who was really, really great. The first appraiser wanted me to do things like crawling up in the attic and take pictures. That was because they can’t be on site, but they do things from their cars, and they take pictures. But I made my whole outdoors property available to them and it was fine to enter the property.
Once the first appraiser was out of the picture, the woman who did the appraisal was completely reasonable. She wanted everything I gave her and complimented me on how I put it together. The closing was wonderful. The person came to my house and we went through all this paperwork. You have to accommodate people, and we just went with the way things are. There were a couple glitches in the paperwork of things they had to correct, but those got handled fine. It all went great.

We paid 210 for this house and right now, these houses all around me are selling for 400,000. We can sell this house easily for 400,000 without even a problem. The first appraisal came in about 350, which we were okay with. But the second guy that came out and appraised it was the guy that appraised this house when we bought it and he wasn't a nice guy at all. He struggled with the fact that this house could have possibly gone up that high in the short amount of time that we've been in it. So, he appraised it at 300. The purpose of us getting a second reverse mortgage was to eliminate our payment which we did but we weren't able to take any money out yet.
Nicole, the rep we were working with, did everything that she was supposed to do and we had a good relationship with her. But she had to play by the rules. When they ordered the second appraisal, I asked why that happened and she explained it to us. But I don't understand why they had to have two appraisals and we had to pay for both of them. So, she agreed that in a year and a half, they could do another appraisal. If the appraisal comes in higher, she said that they would put in the contract that they would pay for it. Nicole did a great job and helped us get through the process. I can see how they can question stuff like that when there's potentially so much fraud going on and stuff in this world. But instead of it being a 30-day deal to close this whole deal, it ended up being about a 90-day deal.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We thrive to make everyone's experience the best we can thus appreciate the comments. Unfortunately it is a challenge with financial transactions and the protocol for PO boxes however we are happy you stuck with us.
The appraiser is an independent non affiliated third party. They do not work for us and due to compliance regulations we do not communicate with them or contract them ourselves. We are not allowed to communicate with them directly, only through another third party so we have no influence on their results. The salesperson at Finance of America Reverse was low key and not high pressure, which was why I decided to go with her. When it came down to getting the first appraisal, it took six months or longer because of this world's most deadly virus. So that sucked. I had an FHA loan and they flagged it on the first appraisal, which was fair. But we’re in a rural area and you couldn’t get anybody out here. It took forever to find somebody and when they did, they were booked up for months. But none of it was Finance of America Reverse’s fault. The delay was all just the situation. During the application and underwriting process, they wanted extra documents and it might’ve taken a couple of months because once again, the world’s most deadly virus had everybody hard to get ahold of. But the loan officer was great and things went very smoothly. The counselor did a great job too.

The process worked out fine for me and I'm happily living here without a house payment. My loan officer was a jewel. He was extremely professional and thoughtful and informative. The people that recorded the loan had not returned my death certificate on my husband. He said he would make a call for me and see if he could get that headed my way. So I felt good enough towards him that I could call him and ask him to do that. I got a 2% loan and it can't get much better than that. Although it's variable rate, even if you hit the high, which is 7%, that's still a couple of percent more than the loan I had, which was a fixed at 5. So overall, it was a good choice. I was happy about it.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Finance of America Reverse is lucky to have an amazing team and we happy you felt supported throughout the process. Our mission is to ensure your retirement goals are achieved in a way that best suits your needs so please let us know if there is anything we can do for you in the future!

My loan officer, Katie, was great to work with. The process went as smoothly as possible. I do like the idea that they require counseling prior to it. Most of the people that are applying for are older and I can see how a person could become confused with what their options actually are. So requiring the counseling, although it's kind of a pain, is a good thing. The loan costs were expensive but I was happy with the interest rate.

Refinancing with Finance of America gave us a lower interest rate and we got some cash. I worked with Katie and I really liked her. She helped me understand things and she would call and check in. She was also honest. Then, we had to make arrangements to have a notary through a window because of the pandemic and she helped with that. The application and underwriting process took about three months and that was a long time. But I was in no hurry and I'm just glad for the money. Other than that, I would like it if I didn't get all these pieces of paper in the mail.

I worked with an agent, Cecilia. She responded quickly and answered my question. She knew what she was talking about. She could not have been friendlier and more informative. But there were a few bits that were not correct. They took payment for my insurance, which I was paying my own insurance. I'm also capable of paying this mortgage. I got it for a very specific reason. I'm not 85. And I was told I pay my own insurance and my own property tax.
When it went to closing, it was $100,000. $40,000 of it to pay off an old mortgage and the other $60,000 were closing costs, which I thought were excessive. Some of the closing costs were not upfront and discussed with me. Cecilia was not even aware of this and she was upset too, after closing, when she saw that they paid $14,000 to my homeowners’ insurance. They overpaid for it and my insurance company sent me back $5,000. Other than that, it seemed to go fairly smooth. They took a very long time with the appraisal and kept requesting more appraisals which were a bit sketchy. Also, I'm on the water on Shelter Island and they don't understand this area.
Reverse mortgages are not ideal mortgages. Finance of America sends a scale that is very helpful, upfront and transparent. If you look at it, you can show for 10 years if someone keeps their home and make no payments, how this compound daily interest will go up. But the problem is, they also show that their house is going to go up. So, it looks as if no matter how high the interest goes up with the reverse, their house will always be worth more and that's always never the case. Reverse mortgages have high interest rates and compound daily can get way out of hand. But I was able to get it fast. So, it was an option for what suits me at the moment. I would recommend them to other people.

In January of 2020 I made the statement that it would be a cold day in hell when I would ever do a reverse mortgage… I started the process in February. After advice from my accountant he said it would be good financial option to pursue. Then the work began. I started with a list of 5 sources to interview. I asked each one a series of the same questions…5 became 3 quickly. After continued questions of the three I selected Finance of America. Why? They showed a genuine interest in answering my questions in a prompt and professional manner… regardless of the number of scenarios I sent them.
I Never waited until the next day, Ellen responded with a proposal within 30 minutes…amazing! In the end they gave me options to answers of my at times confusing questions. The options detailed pluses and minuses. With facts in hand and the comfort that Finance of America had my best interest at heart moving forward was easy. There are a lot of options all selling reverse mortgages the same thing, “people” make the difference.

The application process was somewhat cumbersome. We went through it and it all hangs on the value of the property. When the value came in, it wasn't sufficient and it wasn't attractive enough to make me proceed. But I think they did not take into consideration a very significant equipment shed building. Also, there were some changes with the property. They reevaluated the property. It took us almost a year to complete the process, which I thought was frustrating. But we're really happy with our reverse mortgage and working with Finance of America Reverse, I don't have to worry about monthly payments. It's given me a lot of comfort and peace of mind.

Finance of America Reverse bought out the people my loan was with earlier. The gal who handled my loan reached out to me. She was great. She was very helpful. She did a great job. We closed in December 31. We still have a minor problem. The deed to the property has been amended. The title company, for whatever reason, used the old legal description. The new legal description is just slightly different, but it’s a little larger. It encompasses about three more acres than the old description. But that's being worked on. Finance of America did an excellent job. Their loan officer was very cooperative, very nice and got back to me in a timely manner. I had someone that contacted me by phone, and gave me a lot of information, and it kind of drew my curiosity. I decided to go a little further with it. The rep hooked me up with Nicole. From there, it got sounding pretty good, so we decided to go with it. Nicole was awesome. She really satisfied our needs and answered a lot of questions. We had a lot of questions to ask her, and she was able to provide the right answers. My only concern is they said they sent me a welcome packet. I was trying to go online and set up an account so that when I do the line of credit, I could go online.
For some reason, it wouldn't take my account number. I even called Nicole and told her what was going on. They sent me a line credit form request with my loan number on it and so forth. She can't provide that with me. She said they close her access to it once it's turned over. So, she was unable to provide me with the account number. Overall, the process wasn't long and drawn-out. I didn't really feel I had to call and jar anyone to get it going. Everything kind of rolled with the flow. It went pretty smoothly. Everybody, down from the person that placed the call in the first place, Nicole, down the line, all did a great job.

I refinanced with the same company which is Finance of America Reverse. It was 2017 when I got the original. We had a contact here in LA. This time, I was corresponding with somebody in San Diego. I had a credit line and when I would request it, it would go to my account’s credit union. Because I don't have checks on my debit card, I had to go to the credit union and have them do a thing on their letterhead with their stamp. I'd asked the money to be deposited when they finish but when they got settled with the people in Michigan, I was asked, “Do you want it deposited?” I was corresponding with these people and talking on the phone. I had to do that all over again. They mailed me a form to fill out and I filled it out.
I almost mailed the letter that I got from the credit union before but they didn’t ask for it. They just asked me to fill out the forms. I sent it then they called me and that was when they said, “We need a check.” I told them I don’t have a check. I don’t understand why I had to do that twice and that would be my only complaint. Everything's been pretty good. People have been responsive. If you can fax your request, it moves pretty quickly. Having been through it once, I knew what to expect. It was a little easier to go through.

We appreciate your feedback as it helps us improve our process. I am sorry to hear there was confusion regarding the transfer of funds and we will look into the confusion. We are lucky to have you as a loyal customer and partner. Please let us know there is anything further we can do to make your retirement goals a reality!
