I have been feeding my eight month old GSD puppy IAMS puppy food for the past five months with no problem. The last bag has caused diarrhea every two or three days for the past two weeks. At first I thought he had found and eaten something he shouldn't have but despite prevention of that he is still having diarrhea. I am convinced now it is this lot of dog food. I will have to switch brands now for his protection.

Sadly I will be throwing the rest of the new bag of Iams Lamb and Rice away. We have 5 healthy dogs ages 1-12. After feeding from this particular bag the last 2 days our dogs have been suffering from terrible diarrhea. Our oldest Lab is the most affected. We have fed Iams Lamb and Rice for 10 years... We will be switching! Our dogs have had nothing new in their environment or diet... It is the food! I will have this confirmed Monday morning at our veterinarian's.

We have been feeding our dogs Iams naturals for over two years and since last month, around July 22nd, this food has been making them have diarrhea and throw up. We had no issues until recently like many of the previous reviewers and I want Iams to step up and take responsibility. My dogs have ruined a wall and my carpet because this poorly made pet food. There is no telling what this food has done to my pet's health and I am furious. Don't offer to send me a coupon because I will not ever buy Iams again and I will tell everyone who uses or considers using your product to read about what a terrible product you produce. We fed this to our dogs because we figured something labeled as natural would be better than our previous brand and now our dogs are very sick and our house needs some serious attention. You should be ashamed of yourself to allow a product like this to be sold to people who only want good things for their pets.

We've been feeding our cats IAMS Purrfect Delights Chicken-dulgence pate for a couple of weeks now without incident. This morning, however, we woke up to a house full of bloody vomit and poop. Throughout the day, we've seen the two cats and one dog (who eats the cat food leftovers) vomiting up blood tinged bile. If it was just one pet, I might think they ate something they weren't suppose to or that they were having some terrible GI problem. But when all three pets, who ate the same food last night are sick, the only think I can think they have in common is the Purrfect delights cat food (with an Apr. 30, 2015 expiration). The cats have stopped vomiting and seem to be doing a little better, but the dog just threw up again.

I normally buy my dog a more expensive grain-free food but found myself short on cash. After considering more affordable options, I chose to go with Iams Grain Free Naturals. I very gradually changed my dogs food and he very gradually became ill. Now that he is only eating Iams, he has terrible diarrhea and vomiting. I am going to have to get his old food and put him back on it. I'm looking at probably having to take him to the vet if it doesn't stop soon. I will never buy Iams again. I have read reviews of grain-free naturals making dogs sick for months and it's still on the shelves! I know a number of dog owners and will be sharing my experience with them to save them from going through it, too!

BOYCOTT IAMS. My 9 year old cat has been eating Original Iams Dry cat food all his life. Iams changed the ingredients and "improved" it. Now my cat won't touch it. At first he ate about half the small bag, because that's all he had. Then he started getting sick: won't eat, gets very tired easily, won't play and lies around the house. In general he just feels bad. I have spent over $500 on vet bills and they can't find anything wrong with him. The vet thinks the "improved" Iams is the cause. It may contain lead. BEWARE OF IAMS!!!

Her stomach is 10 times thicker than it should be because of the irritation caused by this food. I have started her on a probiotic and she has not vomited today, thank God. I am weaning her into another food, and I am trying to heal her naturally so she can improve her health as it was before this nightmare. This never happened with any food that I have given the dog before. I am very unhappy!

For 2 straight days, she has been vomiting what looks like bile (yellow) & has diarrhea squirts pretty much constantly as well as being so uncomfortable that she can't sit still. I'm looking at these reviews & I got as far back as Jan. of this year, 6 MONTHS of complaints about dogs have n/v/d w/ this dog food. So everything my dog is going thru is completely unnecessary but Iams has just decided to sweep this under the rug until they sell all this type dog food & if dogs suffer (or die), if we have to pay vet bills for dehydration & have our carpets replaced, they could care less. Well, Iams, you have just lost another customer (you obviously don't care). Don't you dare even THINK about calling to offer me a coupon. It's insult added to injury!!! And I will never use it b/c I'm done.

My cat refuses to eat Iams Purrfect Delicacies and he's never, never been picky before. I've tried two different flavors and he would rather starve than try it. He gave it a sniff and had a lick of some that I put on my finger for him, but then he walked about 5 feet away and is watching the plate of food like it's evil. In desperation, I pretended to eat some of it and did try a little bit of the chicken since he always wants to eat what I eat. Weird, I know - but what's weirder is that *I* immediately got a sore throat from trying about 1oz of it. I can't expect him to eat it now. I should have known better than to buy this stuff because it was on clearance.

I had recently switched to Eukanuba by Iams last month thinking that I was feeding my dog a better food (since he is part of my family). I had been feeding him Pedigree. It has been almost 2 months now and there is still plenty of Eukanuba left. I have a Chocolate Lab that LOVES TO EAT. He was at a very healthy weight. Since switching to this horrible food my once lively dog has become very lethargic and not eating and has developed a very bad odor, his urine smells very bad and his stool also smells very bad (worse than usual). I bought the large bag due to the fact he is a large dog.

After nearly 2 months I have more than half of it left and since reading the reviews on here. Today I have stopped feeding this food to my dogs and went and bought a bag of Pedigree and they went crazy and ate almost a whole bowl the second I poured it. I WILL NEVER AGAIN PURCHASE THIS DOG SICKENING/ KILLING FOOD.

At first I thought it was a bug so I contacted the vet and did what was told of me. I fed her rice and gave her water after 24 hours and when she started acting normal again, I thought it had passed. I fed her some of the Iams food since she seemed ok again, but then she erupted diarrhea and started vomiting. No food has ever done this to her except this nasty brand. This company should be shut down. The stress it has put my dog and my family under is too much. For me to take her to the vet it cost us over $200.00. And they found nothing. I'm putting her back on her old diet. Seeing her in pain was too much for me. Shame on this company.

Now, after 2 years on this food, 3/4 cup twice a day supplemented with green beans, she has almost doubled in weight to almost 50 lbs. The poor thing can barely walk. I thought this food was to assist in weight control and drop weight. Apparently, with all the added cornmeal and other junk in this food it is doing the exact opposite. Don't give her table scraps or a lot of dog snacks and she goes for walks daily. Looks like I will need another brand and hope she doesn't have anything seriously medically wrong because of this. Clearly there is something wrong with their food! They need to let the public know what is going on so more dogs do not get sick. I feel horrible for feeding my dogs food that is making them ill. It does seem that there are several other people experiencing the same type of symptoms on here. We are using the adult chicken flavored mini chunks... same food we have been feeding them for years. My dogs have been eating Iams for several years. I recently changed to the Iams natural and they have had diarrhea and vomiting for the past few days. Today they both just refused to eat. They wanted nothing to do with the food. It has been in their bowls for the entire day. I decided to search online. Thank goodness I found this info. No more Iams for my dogs. It would have been great to at least put on the bag there were new additives.

I own 2 dogs. Scooter is a 14 year old Shih Tzu and Benji is a 4 year old Maltese. We recently moved from Boston to S. Carolina 6/13. We had a visit with our new Vet. The animal care tech. asked what food they were eating. I told her Iams dry mixed with Mighty Dog. She frowned and told us that Mighty Dog was loaded with fat and that perhaps we should switch to Iams canned instead. So, we slowly changed over their food to Iams dry mixed with Iams wet. So since about August last year they have been eating this. They both have had diarrhea off and on intermittently. I contributed it to maybe a change in the water.

It wasn't bad up until the past 2 months. Then it got really bad. Every day they each have a bout of diarrhea - sometimes 2-3x's a day. They act fine otherwise. I brought a sample of each of their stools to the vet. Last week, they both came back normal. My vet. told me to stop all their treats that they were getting. Milk-Bones, Pupperoni, denta sticks, etc. stop all these for a month and slowly add one of the treats back to see what may be causing this problem. So now, they are a mess... wanting their treats which they cannot have!! A neighbor of mine told me to try giving them only filtered water, which I did and it is still going on. These poor babies!! It wasn't until I read everyone else's complaints… now it has me wondering. Is it the Iams??? Never had this problem with Mighty Dog!

Well, last month I bought Pedigree for my dogs. I had been feeding it to them for quite some time when I bought a large bag for the first time from Walmart which caused a severe reaction in one of my dogs. So, I decided to try Iams, which I had used in the past with success. I tried the Lamb and Rice formula. I bought the biggest bag on April 9th from Petco. My dogs refuse to eat it alone, even my dog who picks up twigs and eats them. I am at a loss. I cannot continue to waste money on dog food. I thought I would be safe with Iams but I have to add cooked rice and chicken in order to get my dogs to eat this. I feel like I have to buy wet food in order to get them to eat. At that rate, I would have to feed them 2 cans each a day to get them to eat. Does anyone have any dog food suggestions?

I could not do it. Of course, I took pictures of the wooden spine before eliminating it. This is totally unacceptable. I paid 13 for this bag and my cat could definitely had choked with that wooden chip if I hadn't had the luck to see the wooden chip before serving her meal. Of course, I'll never buy IAMS or anything related to IAMS again. For that same price, you may get superior quality foods with no foreign objects inside it. I tried calling to the telephone line which appears in the cat food bag, but had no luck contacting anyone.

My cat had been on IAMS weight control formula with and without hairball remedy (bright blue bag) for about 2 years and it worked great - helped reduce her weight from 15 to ~9.5 pounds and held steady. Also added Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys with wild rice to fill her up and slow her eating down, together they worked like a dream until this past November. Then she began acting weird, very hyper after eating, itching, etc. Then her stool began changing - rotating between being normal to fat huge (like a dog), from regular brown to light-like putty -then back again. But still "formed". This was after the IAMS weight control kibble recall. But we thought we were "fortunate" in that our bag dates were not on the recall list, not even close in date of mfg.

Her stool issue (and also occasional spittle vomit) began after that recall so we thought the IAMS kibble we had was safe - and thought maybe the Fancy Feast was for some reason no longer agreeing with her (it was never on a recall list). So we took her off the Fancy Feast and only fed her the dry IAMS weight control formula - that's when her stool went from "off and on" dark light to lighter and lighter than yellow then bright orange-yellow cow pies plus excessive thirstiness. In a total panic I called my vet (cat had just been to VET & was healthy) and first thing she asked me about was if there was a change in her food. I told her about the IAMS and she said remove her from it totally and slowly introduce bland.

I fed her IAMS canned Lamb & rice pate (something another vet told me to do for my previous kitty who lived till she was 21, always worked for digestive issues for her). Although it too was IAMS, and had rice there was no listed wheat/corn - it has worked like a dream. I started her off after an 8 hour overnight fast with 1 of the lamb & rice fed every 2 hours. In about 24 hours she produced a totally normal stool, not smelly, and no whimpering in her sleep. She also started to behave like her normal self. We gradually increased her intake and volume so within 2 weeks she is up to 1 larger can of Iams Lamb & Rice plus a small can of beef pate. No loose weird looking stool. No Spittle surprises.

So bottom line, even though the IAMS blue weight control is no longer on a recall list, I wonder what they did to change it up that caused my cat to become so sick since she tolerated this kibble very well for a couple years. I am lucky she had some weight reserve to lose.... Although she seems to be OK now, I am still trekking her to the vet (much kitty displeasure) for a blood workup, now that she can go into a carrier without an "accident" en route.

My 3-yr-old Lab has just died. The vet said it was rat poison. The weird thing is that our dog is in a fenced in yard or in the house at all times. There is no rat or any other poison inside or outside of our house. We have 2 dogs. The only difference between their lives is their food. Our other dog eats soft food because she is older and her teeth are not strong enough to eat kibbles. The only thing we can figure is that our IAMs dog food was somehow tainted. We are crushed over the loss of our otherwise completely healthy beautiful Chocolate Lab. I will never buy Iams products again. After reading the 400+ complaints on this website I am convinced it was the Iams dog food that killed my dog and broke my heart. We have used Iams faithfully under the misguided impression that it was a SAFE quality product. You should be ashamed of yourselves. I have no hope that this complaint will cause any real turmoil to a big company like this, but I do hope in writing this it can help to warn other dog owners so that they (and their dog) do not have to suffer a loss like I have. I only wish that I had seen this site sooner, then maybe my dog would still be with me. :*(

Our dog Iams Smart Puppy, then we switched him to the Proactive Mini Chunks. Soon thereafter he began experiencing bouts of diarrhea, which sometimes turned bloody. On several horrifying occasions, it seemed like he was going to bleed to death. We thought the problem was the dog, that perhaps he had some weakness or flaw which would render him unable to live healthy life. After researching online, we began to suspect it was his food that was making him ill with increasing frequency. We switched to a "five star" food recommended by Dog Food Advisor and within a week his diarrhea and occasional vomiting stopped, and he actually WANTED to eat.

We had assumed he was a picky eater with a small appetite, but now he is eager to eat his new, healthy food. He is livelier, healthier, and more affectionate. He is no longer a sick little dog. We trusted Iams, and what we got instead was food that was incompatible with health. Thankfully we were able to stop forcing our dog to literally choose between hunger and toxicity at every mealtime by switching to a different food in time to prevent death. We thought we had a weak and sucky little pup, but after reading the sad tales of other dogs who were not so lucky after eating Iams, I guess we can say we have a little SuperPup who survived what others did not. And no, I do not want coupons or false sympathy from Iams. I want them to stop selling a food that is making pets sick!

I felt bad but told her I didn't think it was the food as I had given it to my dog a couple of times before.

Well here we are a few days later and I gave one to my dog last night when I got home from work. I was awoken at 4am by a very sick dog. She ran from the door outside and made several stops with diarrhea. I went back to bed and got up at 7am to find my floor littered with large spots of vomit. I always believed if you buy good quality food for your pets, they would be healthier. Recently, I tried Healthy Naturals with wholesome Chicken plus Vitamins, minerals, and Amino acids. They seemed to enjoy the first bag and so this month, I bought another bag for them. They started throwing up shortly after eating. I do not mean a small amount. I was amazed that such small dogs could throw up that much. It continued for a day and a half.

I then noticed that not only were they throwing up but also had diarrhea and blood in their stools. It seemed like I could no sooner clean up their puke and stools that it would happen again. I am very concerned that my small dogs will not get better. It is now day 2 and they are still sick. I have taken the food and will be returning it to the place I purchased it. I have contacted the vet and we are waiting to see how they do tonight after only have a small amount of rice and water. My dogs never get table scraps and have been on a very strict Iams diet. But now I am very concerned that they will not get better and me being a widow cannot really afford to take them to the vet for expensive tests and treatments with medications.

I keep them up to date on all needed treatment and shots. They have always been in great health. I am now not very happy with what is happening and me not being able to afford treatment for possible food poisoning from your food. The code on the bag is 19014612017. They are very important to me and after losing my husband - they are all I have now. It will be so devastating if something worse happens to them because of this food. Any suggestions??? They are miniature schnauzer's salt and pepper.

Some days before, our dog had started to vomit blood and had diarrhea. We took him to the veterinarian where he was treated for dehydration caused, more than likely, by bad food. We called IAMS and suggested we send them sample of the food to which they advised to just throw it away.

After going back and forth for weeks (sending photos, talking to veterinarian, etc...) they refused to even pay the bill for the veterinarian ($360) but sent us some coupons. They just stated that it could not be proven that the dog got sick because of the bad food!!! We are extremely disappointed with IAMS and rest assured that we will not buy their food anymore. I live in Toronto, Canada and the recall from August was never issued here, even though our Iams products are imported from Cincinnati, Ohio. Therefore had I known of it, I never would have purchased this food. My dog ate 2 meals from it on September 20/13 and then refused it the next morning. By the nighttime, I couldn't understand it so I coaxed him into eating this food for dinner by adding water and sitting by him. That was at 7:00pm and by 3:30am, he had thrown all of it up. He then continued to throw up all through the morning and throughout the day, to the point that he was throwing up foam and saliva.

By the evening we were very concerned and rushed him to the hospital. They gave him an anti-nausea shot and sent him home. The next morning, because he continued throwing up that night, we took him to our vet. Our beloved "Teddy" (who just 9 months earlier had perfect blood work and was in great health according to our last vet visit and just 2 days earlier was running 5 kms a day, everyday) died after 3 days of vet treatment and hospitalization. I am still devastated and feel it had to have been his food, though at the time it didn't occur to me. The vet treated him w/ IV fluids, antibiotics, pain meds, but he was not responding and nothing made sense.

After he was gone, I began googling his symptoms and came across dog food contamination and how prevalent it is. Then I learned of the recall. His food had the same best by date and the UPC matched the Proactive Health Mature Adult Large Breed number, right up until the last 2 numbers. At this point, I am convinced the food contains salmonella and have done everything I can to have it tested and get it off the shelves of stores. Iams refuses to test it and has acted despicably to me - denying that there is any chance of this food being toxic. The Pet Food Association is also refusing to test it and simply doing Iams' dirty work of trying to get me to be quiet.

I called Petsmart, where I bought the food, and they too will not help in any way in regard to getting Iams to take action. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, also, simply won't return calls or emails and private lab testing facilities have told me that they will not test it for me for fear it might cause a conflict of interest for them - though they never even asked me who the dog food maker was. At this point I feel completely helpless and the more I read, the more I realize how corrupt this industry is. They all sponsor one another (i.e. pet food co., sponsor vets, etc.) and therefore, they all cover for one another.

Iams continues to ask me for my vet name but I won't give it b/c I'm highly suspicious of their intentions. There are vets in the U.S. who have dealt with animals who became sick just before this recall and those vets who speculated that it could be the food have changed their stance and vaguely stated they're not sure now. I don't know who to trust, but I won't give up and want everyone here to do the same. This should not be allowed. My dog suffered horribly for his last 4 days and paid the ultimate price, and the reason this happens so much is that the victims have no voice. Iams is killing society's most innocent and helpless victims, and THEY KNOW IT - BUT CONTINUE TO DENY IT.

Three days after starting a new 46LB bag of proactive Health Lamb Meal and Rice Formula, my dog started throwing up, had diarrhea, and would not eat at all. Within a day he had blood in his stool, and then for days he would just put out blood when trying to go potty. The vet put him on medication, gave him liquids under the skin, did blood work and x-rays, didn't find anything and nothing seemed to work. After being hospitalized and given medication and fluids intravenously on the sixth day, he was sent home with instructions to take him to the veterinary hospital to see an internal medicine specialist. Being Sat, we had to wait till Mon to do so.

On Mon morning, for the first time in 7 days, he seemed interested in his bowl of boiled chicken and rice, and began to eat. He returned to normal pretty quickly once he started to eat and only ate chicken and rice for the next week. We then started to mix in his dog food and three days later he threw it right back up in the morning. The next day, Mon, he ate normally but didn't seem himself and on Tues started throwing up and having diarrhea again. I didn't connect the dots and was mad at him for going potty in the house. Today, Wed he did it again, and when I went online to see if there may be a problem with the Iams dog food, immediately found numerous complaints of exactly the same problem. I took him back to the vet and right now he is once again on medication and thankfully eating his rice and chicken.

When I called Iams, the agent, Sandy, told me there had been NO reports of problems with the food and was willing to reimburse me for the bag I bought. I told her I was looking at a page of horror stories online, so what she was saying was not at all truthful. At which point she took all my info and said she would send the info upstairs and someone would contact me. Prior to opening that bag of proactive the dog was completely healthy. And now after close to $1000 in vet bills to be told there have been NO reports of any issues. WOW, great company Procter and Gamble.

Last night, we bought a new bag of Iams Proactive Health Mature Adult dog food, 15lb bag, UPC 19014612062 from our local grocer. It is the ONLY food our dog ate last night. This morning our dog was very ill, so we took him in at 8 am to the vet. Immediately, the vet suspected salmonella poisoning. Our dog had a high fever, diarrhea, and was extremely lethargic. He kept having stomach cramping, as if he was going to throw up. We had to leave him at the vet's all day to be hydrated and hooked up to an IV of antibiotics. We picked up our dog at 4 pm. He is still very lethargic and still won't eat even white rice that the vet recommended. Out of concern, I googled "Iams dog food" and "recall" together and was shocked to find so many complaints and so many items on the IAMS dog and cat food recall list since August 15.

However, the UPC listed on our bag of dog food was not on that list and not recalled.... yet. I notified the store and our vet about the IAMS contaminated dog food. We have the original bag and all the dog food, minus one bowl. I hope to have it tested for salmonella so that IAMS cannot deny the problem. I have read all the heartbreaking stories of sick pets and ultimate losses on this website. Please notify all your friends NOT to use this IAMS product. Our beautiful Gordon Setter is still not out of the woods. He is still very sick. We are extremely worried. So whatever you do, DON'T buy this product! And please warn others.

We bought our dog, Lily, a new bag of Iams, same food she had eaten for 10 years and we noticed that she was leaving most of the food in the bowl. Within days, she was sick, vomiting and diarrhea, so we took her to the vet. The vet thought she had eaten something bad, so he treated her with antibiotics, activated charcoal and rehydrated her. We brought her home, fed her again and she just got sicker and sicker. Took her back to the vet again, tried it all over again, but she lost so much weight that we had to put her to sleep. This dog was a companion to our son with Special needs, never left his side. The pain and loss our family experienced was and still is enormous. I can't believe we lost our beloved Lily.

3 of my 4 cats ate Iam's dry cat food. Shortly after opening a new bag of Poultry dry cat food all three cats became sick, could not eat as their throats literally could not swallow, it was as if their throats were burnt. I checked the numbers on the bag and both sets of numbers matched the recall. I took one of my cats into our vet as the other 2 disappeared, one for 3 days and the other for 8. Tests came back neg for salmonella but my cat had a temperature and was dehydrated. He started to growl and hide from us and he is the most loving cat. The other 2 cats came back, thinner and not wanted to be touched.

Since that time, my big gray boy has gone missing again, now for 13 days today. Whatever was in this food it made a terrible impact on our cats and family. We are devastated, I believe Mr. Gray did not make it. He is 5 years old and was a healthy beautiful boy. Had I know that P&G was selling Iams, I would have never supported this company. They have a very bad reputation as far as animal testing goes. Many thousands of animals have suffered and are tortured on a daily basis by P&G. I don't expect they will lose any sleep over my cat. We have been feeding our Boxer Iams Healthy Naturals Lamb & Rice Formula for about the past 3 years. About 4 days after opening a new bag last month, our Boxer was vomiting non-stop, upset stomach, would not eat for days. After a trip to the vet where they could not determine anything but give anti-nausea meds, antibiotic, and Pepcid and bland diet for a week to be on the safe side....she was good as new. Slowly started introducing her regular food again.... Same thing all over again.

This has been going on for over a month now - finally after doing some research, I see that there was a recall for a similar Iams food and we feel that there is something wrong with the Lamb and Rice formula but cannot find any information if others have experienced, but we are certain that this is the cause of all of the headaches, pain and vet bill. Also upset at the fact that we were unaware of any recalls involving Iams. Not once did we see anything involving this on the news. Thanks, Iams.

I work at a veterinary hospital as an assistant and knew from day one I would feed my great Pyrenees puppy Eukanuba large breed dog food. He loved it. For six years that is until Proctor and Gamble took over Iams/Eukanuba. I thought nothing of it since the food he was on was not on the recall list. But shortly after P&G took over and the recall he started to refuse to eat his food. Looking at me with his big brown eyes he backed away from his bowl. I talked to him and coaxed him to eat. He did reluctantly drooling and foaming at the mouth the whole time. Thinking it may just be that bag which I had just opened I returned it making sure that the next bag was from a different store and had a different lot number.

The next month, we went through the same thing, and again I returned the bag of food. I never feed my dog any table food or treats other than Iams restricted calorie rewards. Our Iams rep assured me that the food was ok and that he must be super sensitive and could possibly smell or taste different moisture contents etc. She did have me send in two samples for testing which came back within their normal ranges. We went through this for over a year of him sometimes eating a bag or 2, sometimes not. I began to notice weight loss. Occasional vomiting started which progressed to vomiting twice daily several hours after eating.

During this time bloodwork was done a few times to rule out any other medical issues as well as x-rays. The only thing found was a lot of bacteria in his system. The vet diagnosed him with having heliobacter pylori bacteria in his stomach and we started treatment. I took him for an ultrasound which confirmed he had a mass in his stomach. Two weeks later we had to euthanize him. The type of cancer he had was very aggressive, less than six months life expectancy from on set. Research shows that his cancer is caused by either genetics or heliobacter pylori. Heliobacter pylori is caused by poor quality food and poor nutrition.

Do I have concrete proof that it was the food? No. But looking at the facts and research that I know and the time frame of when P & G took over and my dog having issues, it makes sense to me. If I ever get another dog I will not be feeding Iams/Eukanuba. It also makes me angry that each and every employee from Iams is giving the same response to everyone. They must just send out a form letter just to get people to call. I don't want to talk to any more people from Iams and have them say they'll send me a $5.00 coupon for my loss and my pet's suffering. I would prefer an admission that maybe they don't have such high standards or make as great dog food as they say they do.

After reading these comments, I am devastated and even more concerned that the dog food I fed my beloved Doxie may have contributed to her death. The day I opened my new bag of dog food (2nd 15-lb bag I've purchased of this type -1st without incident), one of my dogs became ill (Thursday, Aug. 22). After a week of ups and downs, with all the symptoms others are describing, and much misery on her part, her whole body just shut down, and she left us yesterday. One of the vet's first concerns was that she was poisoned or ate contaminated food due to the blood test results. I will be investigating this much further and contacting the company, as the lot does not match what is being recalled but is in the same range of manufacture.

I think IAMS needs to start looking even further into their processing plants, because it seems more than coincidental that all these dogs are having the same symptoms even when the food is not in the recalled bunch. It was a 15-lb. bag of Proactive Health Mature Adult. I have always trusted IAMS, and only for a short time switched to another brand last winter, but returned to IAMS because the dogs seemed to do better with it. My other dog didn't eat it in as great of quantity, (and has refused to eat it the last couple days) but appears to be okay thus far. I immediately switched him to something else when I looked up the recall info, because I will not take chances of making another dog sick, and he gulped the new food right down. If I find out that my dog's death is due to this, I will be enraged and you better believe I will make it known. We are suffering greatly at this loss - the pain is unbearable, and I pray it is not the dog food.

From the day I picked up my beloved kitty at 17 weeks of age from a highly reputable breeder who advised using IAMS foods, that is all she has eaten her whole life until about 2 weeks ago. She had already started acting strangely, trying & sometimes succeeding in vomiting, then having litter box accidents like never before. Then I heard about the recall & compared the information on the Orange Bag w/ the numbers on the FDA site. Horrors! I took the bag back to Walmart after photographing all pertinent information & posting it on my Facebook page to warn all my readers. It gets worse.

At this very moment, she is in the ICU overnight in the 24/7/365 emergency vet in Winston Salem NC, receiving IV fluids & her blood tests & exams are frightening. The vet w/ 30 years experience described her intestines as "rough" (meaning something is now radically wrong). She also said this will be costly to treat. $500 in expenses have already been incurred today & will continue tomorrow, money I cannot afford. A couple weeks ago, this beloved Persian cat has NEVER been sick. I am beside myself with concern about her sudden health downturn and am completely unsure how to fund her recovery. I have faithfully bought IAMS foods for 13 years for this kitty, 10 for my previous cat.

When I had to buy a different type of food after the recall, she refused to eat but a few pieces...she wanted her IAMS, but I was afraid to buy any more of the brand we have used so well for so long. Now from all the digestive upsets, she is suffering and can't eat at all. Will IAMS help me with my vet bill now so that she may receive the help she needs?

It was time to pick up more, like to keep it on hand don't want to run out. We went to Walmart to buy some and we could not get any because it was in recall. Well if it was recalled, is that why my cats have been sick? The store told us to contact Iams because they would not sell it to us. This really has me upset. My poor cats have been sick and it had to be from the bad food we bought in this last bag. How would you like to get up in the middle of the night and step in throw up or runny poop? We rescue cats and do we need to change to a different brand of cat food. I always thought Iams was the best for the cats, for this is what we have used since we first started to take in these babies. I have to find something to feed them other than Iams at this time because I can not have sick cats. My problem is they are so picky that Iams is the only thing they like. What can we do?

Update on the pug and chihuahua from yesterday: The pug's diarrhea has become completely blood and mucus. I have taken samples and pictures and spoken to a vet. We will be seen in the morning for tests and an exam. It is sounding an awful lot like salmonella, even though my bag was not recalled on the latest list. I really hope IAMS responds to this. I have called and left messages with corporate. I've never seen my babies this sick before. Neither of them have left the house since they started on IAMS and have had no other changes in diet or activities. This is so disturbing. I hope no other puppies become ill.

I have a 5-year-old Chihuahua and a 4-year-old Pug. They are both taken to the vet regularly and have no health problems. They have never been on IAMS before, but we decided to give it a try after seeing it at one of our preferred pet stores. We slowly introduced it to them, as we do with any new food, and they almost immediately began having diarrhea. The diarrhea has become so bad, they drink constantly and are extremely lethargic. The pug is also vomiting.

Our vet told us to try some chicken and rice (human food) for 3 days and see if they felt better. After seeing them return to normal, we began feeding them IAMS again. Now they are both very sick again and are refusing to eat at all. We tried feeding them their favorite foods (cheese, turkey, etc.) and they will not touch it. They whine while lying down, and only get up to have diarrhea or drink. It is very concerning, and another vet trip will be in order for the weekend.

I have seen several people with complaints in my area, and many of them were from the same 6.1 lb green bag of ProActive Health Small & Toy food with a 20MAY14 expiration date. I really hope IAMS cares enough about their product and the dogs who eat it to investigate and correct this problem. Please be aware that I am NOT asking for any sort of monetary compensation. I just want the problem resolved.

Iams Proactive Health - I have been buying Iams for my dog for 2 years and never had a problem. I bought a new bag of food for my dog a few weeks ago and when I first gave it to him he snubbed it which for him was very strange. He did finally eat it but whenever I would give it to him he would smell it and walk away. He did eat it so I thought he was being finicky then he started vomiting 4 or 5 times a day and I started to wonder if it was the food. I bought a bag of Blue Buffalo and the vomiting stopped. I tried giving him some more Iams and although he didn't eat it at first but did pick away at it. I can tell he does not feel good after eating the Iams and will not feed him it anymore. What the hell is going on with that food?

Taking him to a specialist in 2 days to see if we can save him. I honestly, truly believe the food changed my cats' metabolism or chemistry. I feel this will be the 3rd cat I will lose simply because I decided to feed them the "better" food. Iams should be more responsible and stop "apologizing" to all posts. We took them to the vet and their tests came back negative for everything so the vet decided to just prescribe them an antibiotic and it cleared everything right up and they started eating normally again. They then again got sick after eating the Iams. Everything cleared up after switching brands.

I feed Iams Weight & Hairball Control to my three cats. I've always considered Iams to be a superior brand of animal food. (I feed the Senior Iams to our 14 year old dog, and this is the food that seems to be best for her.) Two of our cats are doing fine on this food. However, one of our cats gets severe diarrhea with the Iams food. He seems to have a chronic case of diarrhea while on Iams. I accidentally bought the Purina Hairball & Weight Control, and the diarrhea cleared up.

The next time we ran out, I bought Iams again. Since then, his diarrhea has come back. (I did the gradual switch with mixing the other food with the Iams for a few days.) I feel that the Iams is the cause of his diarrhea, and I am very disappointed in the food. He is a long-hair cat, so he needs the hairball control food. He has no other symptoms. He is very active. I just paid over $25.00 for a bag of the Iams cat food, and I can't afford to buy him a different brand until next pay day. Unfortunately, I am going to have to switch brands unless Iams has a better solution.

I emailed Iams and they seem to act dumb about why I can't find it. It isn't in Petco, Petsmart, Walmart, or Target. Always used to be. The emailed response said it was at those stores in the 60134/60510 zip area, and it most certainly is NOT. I just stumbled across this site and I'm wondering what kind of coverup is going on by Iams. Why is there a HUGE number of illness in the last two months w/ this food? You (Iams) are obligated to tell us if there was a problem with the food.

Personally, my lab isn't sick, but I'm not terrified to buy another bag. Something is up, Iams knows it, but they aren't telling. I suppose Dena is going to respond like she has to the rest of you, but come on Dena, let's hear it. WHY HAS THIS DOG FOOD BEEN PULLED FROM THE SHELVES? WHY CAN'T STORES ORDER IT? Mini-Chunks is basically the same food, only a smaller nugget. What is the difference? Why is that food still available? If you are holding back on pet owners about a potential safety problem w/ the food, then I would be the first to sign up for a class action lawsuit. There HAS to be a reason. Maybe a local news channel can help us?

    Hello Julie:
I am very sorry you are unable to locate our Iams ProActive Health Adult Chunks. I can assure you this product is still available in the market. It is an excellent food that is not only nutritionally complete and balanced, but also safe and healthy.
Our portfolio of products has expanded over the years. Few stores are able to sell all of our pet foods in our product line. Often, stores need to make choices on which products they will stock. Mini- Chunks is one of our most popular foods and has been out the longest. It sounds like most stores in your area selected Mini -Chunks as their product of choice (over ProActive Health Chunks).

I would very much like to contact you and help you find ProActive in your area. I again apologize for inconvenience and look forward to speaking with you.

I have also noticed the foul smell and requiring to purchase more food because it was spoiled. I also noticed that the supposedly fresh dry food that my two pups will leave in the bowl for a week. I always am giving them canned food, but they treat the Iams canned with the same urgency as the dry food. And Dear Dena RVT, if you really had a "high level of nutritional expertise" then why don't you use this to bring your products up to maybe a 4 or 5 star rating? If you really appreciate people postings, then why comment with the same lame answer that you can't even feel sorry for what your company is doing or providing?

You know, since I have thrown the Iams crap away and been using the 4/5 star dog foods from companies that take the time to care about our pets/children, I haven't had to clean my dogs or spray down my lawn from the diarrhea from Iams. You and your company that you work for should be ashamed of yourselves saying that you "exists to enhance the health and well being of more dogs and cats." Finally, I found this page about the dog food from Costco! Then I knew how they got sick.

Why isn't there a recall on this!!! It should be public knowledge that something in their food was contaminated!!! The bag was a new bag of Iams Probiotic - the 50 pound green bag. I just called IAMS and submitted a claim. I am being sent a full refund on the last bag of food. I have 3 small dogs (2 Chihuahuas and 1 Italian Greyhound) all in which have never had any stomach or bowel issues until the last 2 bags of IAMS. I took them to the vet and nothing is wrong. No worms, parasites or suspicious illness. Vet suspects bad food or something they ate. They have no access to anything toxic. Just their fresh water and dog food (well dog food might be considered toxic at this point). I am dealing with 3 dogs all with diarrhea at the same time and it's not pretty. Cleaning up after them is wearing me out, but most importantly, their health has declined. Dull coat, some vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss on all 3.

They are currently on a 24-hour no food to clean their system. I start them on boiled chicken and white rice for the 2nd time tonight in hopes to get rid of the diarrhea. In my opinion, it doesn't matter if it's a consumer issue or retailer issue on how the food might have been improperly stored. I don't trust IAMS anymore and have no plan on ever going back. With 3 dogs sick right now because of bad food, I am one ticked off lady. I'm convinced it's the dog food as nothing has changed. All 3 are having the same symptoms and they have not had one table scrap or access to any other food for their entire lives. Something is wrong with the current batches. I know my dogs.

I immediately thought it had to be the food, although the other dog didn't seem sick. It took her a week, and feeding her chicken rice and pumpkin to get her straightened out. We finished the bag. I had chalked it off as a stomach bug... UNTIL we opened another bag. The first bowl again, the OTHER Doxie gets sick, and starts vomiting and having watery diarrhea with blood in it. It took me 5 days with a syringe, persistence, water and household cures for diarrhea.

I feared I would lose her but we fought together. I treated them both for worms, just as a precaution, but... they had just within the last 30 days had their shots and a dewormer, so that could not have been it. The other dog has been vomiting and doesn't finish her food. We now have 2 days' worth of food left, and I was getting anxiety over the next bag. Well, the next bag won't be IAMS. Everything was fine with my Dachshunds until the last 2 bags. I don't know the batch for the first bag, but the second one reads as follows: 210714-21JUL14-30804177-I1US61891. Please address this so people don't lose their pets to this bad dog food you have been sending out.

I don't know if Iams dog food is the cause or not, but after feeding from a new bag of Iams (green bag large chunk) for a week, our yellow lab female began refusing to eat it. We pour our dog food into a tote and throw away the bag, so I don't have a batch number. It was purchased on May 16th at Bomgaars in Alliance, NE. She has been on Iams her entire life of 8 years and has always been a very good eater. She had never refused a meal! But after a several days of refusing to eat (I even tried mixing it with broth, softening it with water, etc., as I thought maybe she had a sore mouth or throat from chewing a stick or something like that), I finally gave up on her food and offered her different food. She did eat, but was not acting right.

A vet exam found intestinal discomfort and lab work showed liver issues. All other labs were fine. She was extremely thirsty during this time, but tests for diabetes were fine. She has since been on home cooked food (chicken and rice) and some liver detox supplements. She has eaten well ever since and is slowly recovering. Her water consumption quickly returned to normal. Due to improvement in a 2nd set of labs, the vet suspects something she ate. We have searched everywhere and found nothing toxic that she could have gotten into, which is why it occurred to me that we had fed from a new bag of food just before she started going downhill. That led me to google Iams dog food problems and I found this site.

If you suspect trouble with a new bag of Iams, please let your local veterinarians know and also the place of purchase so they can compile a list in case of multiple complaints. I still have the dog food, but unsure how to go about getting it tested or what that would cost me. I already have $800 into vet exams and testing, but still no definite answers.

Like so many of the others on this site, I bought a bag of Iams about 4-6 weeks ago and as soon as I opened the bag and fed it to my dog, she had diarrhea and vomit, including blood in her stool. She then proceeded to refuse to eat for for the next week. This is the food she has been fed for the past 7 years or so. I kept trying to coax her to eat it until I saw this site. Don't do it. Get your dog a better food and they will have no more problems. Very disappointed to waste money on food I had to throw out, but glad my dog is healthy again.

I was shocked to find this site and see so many people having the same problem with Iams food. Both my dachshunds got sick after me opening a new bag of food a couple weeks ago. They had diarrhea and then constipation to the point where they were unable to potty. The vet checked them for a variety of things and treated them for possible infection - worms and dehydration. They both refused to eat, which if you know dachshunds they ALWAYS want to eat! After a few days, they ate rice and chicken. It was over a week before I mixed canned food with the rice. Then I went to Petco and purchased a new bag of Iams. When I opened it, it had webs and worms in it. I returned it to the store and the man said to get a new bag (no apology!). I opened the new bag in the store just to check and moths came flying out!

Today my husband went to PetSmart and purchased yet another bag. It too has tiny little eggs in the bottom of the bag on the food. The people in both stores made comments that this isn't unusual for Iams! I have been using Iams products as do my grown kids with all their pets. Now we are afraid that our dogs and cats are not safe eating Iams. The company seems to be doing nothing to correct the problem. Is this going to be another situation (like the Chinese melamine in the food) where we have dead pets before they care?

I immediately returned it to the store for a refund. I won’t have a reaction because I returned it before feeding to my cats. Has the formula/appearance been changed or is it just the wrong food? I wasn't about to feed it to them... not knowing what it was. Please see pic. The food on the left is what was in the bag. The food on the right is what they have always eaten.

I have been using this product for a couple of years now and it has greatly reduced my indoor cat's vomiting episodes. He seems to be healthier than ever. My problem started when I was given a rescued baby bird to raise. The way you feed a baby bird is by soaking dry cat food until it is mushy and mixing it with boiled eggs. You mash this up really good and kind of roll it into pellets to feed them. Okay, so you have to keep this in the fridge so it will not go bad. Then you scoop a small amount on to a paper plate and heat in micro for 3-5 seconds.

A couple of days ago, I noticed a small spark or two but did not become overly concerned. I just thought it was a bit odd. Today, however, it totally blazed up and even burned a hole in the plate. I know this is a microwave reaction to metal. To my knowledge, chickens don't put metal in their eggs when they lay them which means the only other place it could have come from is the cat food. I am now very worried about my cat. I love my cat; he is a member of the family. I don't know what is going on, but someone needs to be checking it out!

So I took her to the vet but they couldn't find anything wrong with her. When I brought her home, I found all my dogs had a mess of diarrhea and blood in their cages! At that point, I realized it must be the food that is the one common factor. I will never buy this brand again and will spread the word on what it has done to my babies! He also started having loose stools. After going through almost two bags of food, he had pretty much stopped eating. I switched to Nutro cold turkey and he gobbled it down with gusto. His loose stool went away. I threw out the remainder of the Iams food. I think he was trying to tell me something. I'm glad I didn't continue to make him eat the stuff. My vet also told me that it is one of the worst food brands out there. Pure junk he said. Do yourself and your pet a favor - don't buy Iams. It's crap.

It wasn't until I took in a couple more kitties that I had to switch to a cheaper brand… Purina One. But I noticed they threw up a lot and one of my older cats had diarrhea. When I heard about Purina brand treats and some of their pet food causing illness in dogs and some cats, I switched back to Iams. The vomiting stopped, and my other cat's diarrhea did too… for a short time. Then they all started having diarrhea.

I had them on the weight control and hairball care formula first. So I changed to the regular multi-cat formula to the new higher protein one with chicken. The diarrhea hasn't stopped. They always have loose stool or diarrhea, and I'm worried sick about them now. I'm ready to switch them to a whole other brand. This is ridiculous. Now that I'm reading about other people's pets experiencing this as well, I won't be buying Iams anymore, period. This problem with their pet food needs to be addressed.

I thought it was a change in diet but later in the day, she started having dry heaves, so I called the vet. He couldn't find a reason for this but thought maybe it was morning sickness. The next day, she died. Do I think the food had something to do with it? Yes. She was perfectly healthy until eating the food. Her system suggests food poisoning. Why can't dog food manufacturers be held responsible?

My boyfriend and I got our Bonny as a puppy (Golden/Great Pyrenees mix) a year and a half ago. As some of you know, Goldens are very easy to train; Great Pyrenees, however, not so much. Because our Bonny has both breeds in her, she's great at some things but not so great at others. In order to train her, we used to carry a couple of the Iams Proactive Health Biscuits with us daily, broken into little pieces, to reward her for doing something well.

Within days of giving her these, she began to develop loose stools. I, thinking it was perhaps due to something she picked up on her walks, closely monitored her every move. She picked nothing up, ever. I then assumed it was possibly due to the baby carrots she used to get as treats, so I stopped giving her those as well. After 3 vet visits, to rule out any parasites, worms, etc., our vet informed us that maybe she just had a sensitive stomach and to switch her food, which we did to Science Diet Sensitive Stomach. However, the loose stools progressed to diarrhea, and then to both diarrhea and vomiting, not to mention endless gas as well as gurgling tummy.

Again, we took her back to the vet (this past February). And again, the vet could find nothing wrong. When I mentioned that I was giving her Iams Biscuits as treats, she didn't seem concerned since Iams is supposed to be a trusted and vet recommended brand. Finally, I decided to completely stop giving her the Iams Biscuits, hoping that would do the trick. And guess what? It did! I would hardly call this a coincidence, seeing as everything else in her diet aside from her new Science Diet food was eliminated. The only thing we have given her throughout the 1 1/2 years of being blessed with her has been Iams Proactive Health, small biscuits for adult dogs. Now that they are absent from her diet, there is no more diarrhea, no more gurgling belly, no more burping, passing gas, and vomiting. She's back to being happy as a dog should be.

Obviously, something is not right with the Iams brand. What I don't understand is why has no one done research regarding the hundreds of complaints? I could kick myself for not having found this website sooner! It would have saved my sweet puppy hours of being miserable and vet visits which terrify her. Shame on you Iams. And as for your lame "blanket response" to all of us moms and dads about how sorry you are, you can take your apology and shove it.

We had been buying the Iams Sensitive Naturals small bag when our one dog started itching badly. It seemed to be working and the scratching stopped. We had to get more food one day and our store was out of the small bags so we spent the money to get the big bag thinking it would be the same. Boy, were we wrong. After just a couple days, they started to have really loose stools and would even poop in the house and their tummies sounded gurgly. We began to think it was the big bag so we looked closely at the food and it looked odd, like stuff was trying to grow out of it. We have gone back to the small bag and are hoping things will get better. It looks much better. I think there is a bad batch going around.

Our dog has been eating BJ's Holistic All Natural dog food for years, and I made the mistake of trying to save some money and bought IAMS Lamb & Rice Formula. Soon after, she started scratching her ears and underbelly a lot. So I took her to the vet and was told it was environmental (no fleas or anything). We took her off the IAMS food and back to BJ's brand. She stopped scratching her ears and would occasionally scratch her belly. So after a month, I fed her two meals of IAMS to see if it was the cause of her scratching. Sure enough, after two meals, she was back to scratching her ears and belly vigorously. Any vets out there with any thoughts of how long this will take to get out of her system or what she may be allergic to?

OMG, I had no clue this dog food was causing pets to get sick! Maybe if Iams would have recalled it, maybe my sweet baby girl Pebbles would still be alive! The food I was feeding her was Iams Weight Control (blue bag) when out of the blue, she suddenly fell ill. After she ate, I let her outside and she had diarrhea. I didn't think too much about it at first. About 1/2 hour later while outside with her, I noticed she was just laying on the porch not moving much and seemed somewhat lethargic. I called her name and she could barely lift her head to look at me. I went right over to her. I knew something wasn't right. I tried to get her to move and she couldn't even get up. I scooped her up and rushed her to the emergency vet hospital because I knew something was wrong with my girl.

She just laid there on the car seat. I talked to her all the way to the hospital and I could see it in her eyes - I had to get there and fast. I carried her in and asked for help. They immediately took her from my arms as bloody diarrhea was coming from her bottom. The doctor came in the room with my Pebbles on a bed hooked up to IVs. She was laying on her side and having a hard time breathing. She looked so sick. That's when the doctor told me my dog was critical and there wasn't anything they could do for her. She probably wouldn't make it through the night.

To say the least, I crumbled into a sea of tears and disbelief. I was heartbroken! How could this be when just hours before that she was fine? She was happy as she was dancing circles around me when I walked through the door from work and as we went for our usual walk around the neighborhood to now driving home with my sweet girl next to me in a pretty box and thinking how am I going to tell them that our sweet girl has crossed the rainbow bridge! Iams, I have always fed my pets your food. I choose to pay the higher price because I trusted that I was giving her the best, but instead I may have hurt her! If and when my heart ever heals and I get another dog, your food or any of your products will never go near them! I will only buy American made!

I have to say that I am totally appalled by Iams handling of this issue! Hundreds of sick or dead animals, and the best you can do is reply with a form letter?! Why have these foods not been recalled?! I, like so many of these other pet owners, thought I was doing a good thing for my pets by spending the extra money on Iams. Apparently, I was wrong. My dog has been having stomach problems ever since I opened his new bag of large breed chunks. Vomiting, horrible diarrhea and the sounds coming from his stomach literally kept me awake even when he wasn't being ill. I called our vet the very first night and checked online for a recall.

Since there wasn't one, I thought it couldn't be the food. I had just switched him back to the large chunks from the proactive mature adult and our vet suggested I mix them; that perhaps the switch had caused his stomach upset. So I went to the store and bought a bag of the mature adult. Every day when I filled his bowl, I would give him that with just a few of the chunks mixed in. He continued to have problems, though not as bad as the first 24 hours. The night before last, while laying awake listening to his stomach make all kinds of horrible sounds (I actually recorded this on my phone from my bed. It was that loud!), I decided to check once again for a recall and luckily came across this site. My dog and I have been through two weeks of hell all because you refuse to take responsibility of your product!

I am fortunately one of the lucky ones as after only 48 hours of no Iams food, my Cubby is feeling much better. I currently have him on the old, homemade standby and will be getting him some Hills Science per my vet's recommendation. Thankfully, both of my bags were not contaminated. Now I am wondering if this is why my last baby died of cancer and why I had to spend several hundred dollars last year to have a large growth removed from Cubby's face?! I totally agree with the one writer who said you should be ashamed of yourselves! Taking advantage of caring pet owners and hurting innocent animals. I don't know how you can live with yourselves.

Also, she had diarrhea with blood in her stool coming out like water. We had to rush her into emergency to have her rehydrated. She had to be put on several different medications as well, including anti-nausea. The doctor said it could have been a change in her dog food, which was purchased at Walmart. After blood tests, stool tests and x-rays, we still had a very sick dog for 7 days and a vet bill close to $800.00. Lesson is, don't switch dog food and buy premium product at premium stores. I am saving the bag just in case you want to contact me; also the remainder of the food. Both of my other dogs threw up that night as well, but they barely ate any of their food. Last week, one of my cats suffered from severe vomiting and diarrhea. The second cat soon displayed similar symptoms. After a day and a half, they did not improve. We noted they got sick a couple of hours after eating. They indicated they were hungry, so I put some food into a bowl to test their reactions (we had been trying to find the source of their illness). They turned up their noses at the food immediately.

This was the first time they hadn't liked Iams. We bought a locally produced brand of food. They ate hungrily and haven't been sick since. Is it possible that there was a bad batch of food? I'd like to know what was wrong. It breaks my heart to see them look up to me when they aren't feeling well and I have given them something that will make it worse.

I have had her on Iams Pro Health Diet Formula for about 2 years. I just opened a new bag that day. When she was fed at supper, the same thing happened one hour after she was fed. This is a dog that can eat anything and has a stomach of steel. She very seldom gets ill from anything she eats. By Dec. 31, 2012, she refused to eat her Iams in the morning. She was very sick all day and stayed to her self in a quiet place. I tried feeding her again in the evening and noticed how she turned up her nose at the food. I have another dog that is on different dog food, Summit (Lamb and Rice). I tried to give her some of that; she ate it! No problem. I then fed her Summit in the morning on Jan. 1, 2013, and by evening she was completely well, full of energy and wanted to play!

I am shocked that Iams dog food was bad. I will no longer use it. I am glad I know my dog well enough to realize it was the dog food and lucky there was some other type of dog food at home I could try. The Iams Pro Health Diet (blue bag) was purchased at Walmart a week earlier.

I just saw a video of some of the dogs at an Iams testing site. I am shocked and saddened that a pet food company would be so inhumane - one look at the body language of the dogs tells me that they are petrified. One dog seemed to have gone crazy at the sight of a human. Why do you suppose that is? I do not think that any study of animals in these conditions would be valid, considering the cortisol levels in their bodies. Do you even know what that is? If people knew what you are doing, they would not buy your products.

    Dear Barbara:

I work for Iams, and not 100% sure of the video you watched. Although, I am aware there is an old video on the internet. The footage was taken many years ago at a contract facility. This was not an Iams owned facility. Once we identified the blatant violations against our long-standing animal welfare policy, we immediately ended our relationship with that company. Our employees adopted the dogs.

Today, our feeding studies are done at pet owner’s homes or our own state of the art Pet Health and Nutrition Center. More than 70% of our “taste testers” are family pets, living in private homes.

For studies which require a more controlled environment, we use our Pet Health and Nutrition Center. We’ve invested millions of dollars to build this facility, which is staffed with veterinarians and nutritionists. It is a virtual “pet haven,” specifically designed for the comfort and protection of dogs and cats. It is a cageless environment – which I invite you to see for yourself at www.iamstruth.com. When it’s time for a dog or cat to leave our Pet Health and Nutrition Center, we have an excellent employee adoption program.

I’m sorry this outdated video is causing confusion and needless concern. We have tried unsuccessfully to have the video removed. Unfortunately, these days, all online materials seem to have a very long “shelf life.”

The can was kept on a shelf in the pantry and she had the dinner on Friday, October 28, and on Saturday, October 29. On Saturday, our Westie vomited some of her dinner and was not interested. By Sunday, she was lethargic and not interested in eating her dinner or drinking. On Monday, she was urinating blood and vomiting brown. We were unable to take her to the vet due to financial restrictions at the time.

By Thursday, November 1st, we finally found a vet who was willing to work with us. It was determined our poor Westie was in kidney failure with possible infection. Our Vet believed she was being poisoned and we could not determine the source. After many blood tests, IV fluids, and drugs, my Westie is slowly on the road to recovery. She is still very ill and is constantly vomiting. She does not want to eat even though her food has since been changed and we must do it via syringe.

My Westie is only 7 years of age. She is the picture of perfect health. She never is sick and always has been up to date on her shots. The only thing that can be determined and it is my high belief that Iams ProActive Health is the source of my dog's demise. I contacted Iams Customer Service and spoke with a representative who only offered the cost of the can back to me and said no complaints have been lodged. If you are an Iams dog food owner whose dog has been ill since feeding on Iams, please contact them. I am extremely upset that they will do nothing about it. I have since contacted my FDA representative and I am now looking for an attorney to recoup the unnecessary costs of my vet bills. I am glad that my dog is slowly recovering, but she should not have been subjected to this in the first place. I believed that Iams was a reputable company but I now see that it is not the case!

Iams Pro-Active Health - I wish I had read these reviews sooner as it would have saved my 13-year-old lab, Rogue, from illness. About a month ago, I took Rogue to the vet for what I thought initially was a UTI or leaking bladder and a slight anxiety issue that developed over the course of about a week. Rogue is an older dog, but she has always been very healthy with no major health concerns, and I thought this was probably just the first sign of her aging. The vet found an elevated level of white blood cells, but no other issues. Rogue was not lame, nor was she "acting sick" in any way. She was given antibiotics for 10 days. Around the end of these 10 days, the bladder issues had started to subside but still hadn't fully gone away, and she woke up one morning with a massive hematoma on her left ear. I called the vet and took her back.

The vet wanted her to continue the antibiotics longer before dealing with the surgery for her hematoma. Fast forward 8 days and the bladder issues still persisted at which point the vet recommended trying changing the dog food as she could see no other reason why a dog that has never been on antibiotics in her life would be seemingly "resistant" to them, and with no other sign of disease or illness, the food was the only explanation. The dog food has been changed, and Rogue has since started to recover from the urinary issues. The hematoma, however, will be lanced in an expensive surgery. My veterinarian believes the hematoma was an allergic reaction to toxins in the dog food. Be warned fellow pet owners. Iams is a complete disaster in terms of dog food. After years of loyalty to them, I will never purchase another bag again for the safety and health of my best friend.

Two days after feeding him this dog food, he began simply vomiting the food up, and nothing else. As the day progressed, he began throwing up a dark brown substance, which after researching, I came to find out was digested blood. While researching, I came across this site where other people were experiencing their dogs getting sick from Iams feed. Finally, he ended up throwing up plain blood and I took him to the local emergency veterinary clinic. While I cannot fathom a dog throwing up blood from simply switching his dog food, the veterinary doctor assured me that it was likely caused by the switch to the lesser quality food. I have fed my dog Purina feed before when I ran out of his brand without any issues. This is why I am drawn to the conclusion that this feed is very inedible, and should not be allowed for sale.

I know it is the food because we stopped feeding her Iams and just fed her my ground beef and rice mixture, and the diarrhea stopped. Please let me know if there has been any change in the ingredients.

We have been buying Iams for about 6 months on the recommendation of our vet. They have sensitive tummies, so we have fed them the lamb and rice formula. We have had no issues up until this last week. We bought the large bag at Walmart, which is where we normally get it. But when we filled their bowls at first when they smelled it, they turned their noses up to it. They eventually ate it throughout the day. Our youngest boxer got sick first - she experienced extreme diarrhea and vomiting. We thought she might have gotten into something in the yard, because the food had never made her sick.

Boxers have touchy tummies so we didn’t think anything else about it. After a day or so of them not eating it, we became concerned. We supplemented the dry food with a mixture of cottage cheese, because it normally calms their tummy. On the third day, our older boxer started having what we can only explain as mini-seizures. When she would look at you her head would shake from side to side uncontrollably. We immediately took away the food and gave them something else. Within a day, they started behaving as normal.

I cannot imagine what might have happened if we continued to let them eat the Iams. We have the entire bag so we can send it with our vet for testing. I think Iams should be ashamed of themselves for adding subpar and not tested ingredients to the food because it's cheaper. Their "Name Brand" and high cost makes you think that they are more reputable. I am here to tell you they are not. I will go back to a locally made food. I will pay more to make sure my girls are safe with what they are eating. Shame on you Iams.

Over the summer, my totally healthy cat suddenly got violently ill and was vomiting everywhere. I took him to the vet and got him subcutaneous fluids. They could not find anything wrong with him, except that his stomach was very tight and upset. Then in mid-September, the same cat suddenly and for absolutely no explained reason got severe kidney failure. It happened out of nowhere, and I think I had just opened a new bag of Iams dry cat food. Thank God, I am a powerful energy healer and was able to bring my cat back from the brink when he showed almost no improvement after two days of hospitalization on IV fluids. However, I am now over $5000 in veterinary costs into this nightmare. And my poor cat is getting poked with needles on a regular basis, because we are still giving him subcutaneous fluids regularly.

After reading the reviews here and other articles online about horrifying animal testing being performed by Iams, I greatly regret that I trusted this brand based on the fact that it is sold at Whole Foods and supposedly had a good reputation. I have switched my cats to prescription k/d diet and Azmira (which apparently has never had a pet food recall in 30 years, proving it is entirely possible to produce pet food in a responsible and ethical way).

Horrified does not even begin to tell how I feel reading this site today. I will be applying as much energy healing as I possibly can with the hope that Iams will seriously rethink its entire business, including both the welfare of the pets who are fed this food and the welfare of the equally deserving animals who are apparently being tested on. It's time for a major wake-up call, Iams.

I have spoken several times to Iams, but they are resolute in their defense of their food. But I have to wonder, why did they both get sick at the same time just after changing their food? O'Malley and Tom were both loving, happy kitties until then. They should not have suffered and then died. Shame on Iams! God, I miss my love bugs!

He wasn't the same energetic dog anymore, wasn't eating very often and when he did, the diarrhea was explosive. He couldn't hold it and would just go anywhere in the house. I switched to another brand yesterday and already there is a difference in him. I will not waste my money on Iams brand dog food again.

On September 8th, 2012, I purchased a $38 bag of Iams ProActive Dog Food Lg Breed for my 2-year-old Labrador retriever, who has been eating Iams since she was a puppy with no problems. When I opened the new bag of dog food and poured some into her bowl, she took some bites, would spit it out, and eventually snubbed the rest and never went back to eat it again. My husband and I assumed she was sick, took her the vet, which ended up being thousands of dollars to have tests ran to find out what is wrong with her. I think it is her dog food because they cannot pinpoint what is wrong except for the fact her white blood cells are high, her lymph nodes are enlarged, and her liver is mildly enlarged.

She is eating everything else, but has lethargy, nausea, which has been subsiding, and horrible diarrhea. Since this has happened, she has slowly started eating again, anything and everything but that Iams dog food I bought in September. I bought 4 different brands, including a new bag of Iams, to see if it was her or the dog food, and she eats all of them, except the bag from September. I think the bag is bad and is causing the health problems she is having. Something has caused her to become seriously ill, almost fatal - the vet thought she had lymphoma because of the terrible condition she was in. She is still very sick, but slowly getting better. I saved my receipt with the serial number - and I will be following up with Iams to address this issue. From all the other comments I see of other dogs having some of the same health problems, it leads me more to believe that it is the dog food that made her sick. Also, I am saving the dog food to see if I can have it tested to see if it's bad. Then, we will go from there.

We've always fed our Border collie mix, now 14, Iams dry food. In August, we couldn’t find the usual active maturity, so my husband bought an Iams mix for seniors. Our dog started refusing to eat, but eventually did eat hours later. He was happy to eat people food or dog biscuits, so it didn’t seem like an appetite issue per se. We mixed the new food with our old bag of Iams to get him to eat it. He became thirsty after starting the new bag of food and would have loose stools.

During this phase, this lasted until about a week ago, we had labs drawn. He had elevated liver and kidney enzymes, so he is getting worked up for some diseases. Meanwhile, we have switched food over to a Purina line. He has perked up, is no longer thirsty, and has a great appetite once again. I suppose it could have been a long illness (lasting more than 6 weeks), but we were curious about the possibility that the food refusal, excess thirst, and loose stools was related to this bag of Iams dry food, since the timing matches; and that is how we came to this site.

Our poor Bernese Mountain dog and now our 10 month old puppy have been so sick with diarrhea. We finally have put together why! It is their Iams dog food. This past Monday, our poor Berner, Otis could not stop having diarrhea. I went to bed, but could smell from upstairs at 4:00am that he was still sick. Imagine my shock when I came downstairs to see blood puddles everywhere! I thought he was about to die! I had to take the day out of work to take him to the vet and then come home and steam clean the entire first floor carpets in our house.

Meds stopped his diarrhea, and a stool sample test showed no parasites. He has been on Iams for a while and has experienced intermittent episodes of diarrhea. It wasn't until I discovered this site that I realized the dog food is what is causing this. We are disgusted since the food is not cheap! We thought we were treating our dogs to a better diet, when in reality, we could have killed them both. Do not buy Iams!

When I searched over the internet, I found that other people got exactly the same issue with their dogs. I thought that since Iams is so expensive and recommended by the veterinarian, my dog should be fine. I was scared for my dog; I could not sleep because I had to bring him outside every 30 mins. I stopped giving him this dry food and he ate only rice for 2 days. Now my dog is feeling better and I have changed his food for a brand with natural ingredients. It's a shame that Iams sells this expensive food which is not good for dogs. Please do not give this food to your dog.

Very Sick Dog - Sept 20th, 2012: I am so glad I searched Google and found this site! I have never used Iams Dog Food for my dog because I'm cheap and can't afford it. I typically buy the Wegmans No Name brand dog food. A week ago, I ran out of dog food and picked up Green Bag of Iams Dog food for Miss Ruby Dog. She started having issues with her bowel movements and I thought it might be because she was suddenly switched to the new food. She was having explosive and constant diarrhea. She was obviously in pain and not feeling good as her tail was tucked between her legs for 2 days.

I put her on a grilled chicken diet and gradually reintroduced the dog food. She was fine for the last 4 days. Yesterday, she received a bowl of the dog food and we are right back to explosive uncontrollable diarrhea and this time it has blood in it. I will be discarding the food and contacting the Target Store where I purchased it. I won't be buying Iams again; I will stick to the no name brand cornmeal blend food from now on. I certainly hope that Iams tests the food. I unfortunately dumped the dog food into our plastic container, so I no longer have any batch numbers of the bag we used. But it was purchased at the Target Store and I will pop over and find out what bags they have on the shelves there.

He died yesterday in front of me, it was awful! I don't wish this on my worst enemy of what I endured, especially my beloved Steveo. Please, if you have your pet on Iams, take them off immediately! Yesterday when my mother mentioned that it's strange how all 3 of my cats haven't lived to 12, where all of her cats growing up grew up to 21, 18, and 20, and she mentioned, "Do you think it could have been the Iams?" It all suddenly clicked for me. My mum continued to say, "I never had my other cats on this food in England."

Three deaths, too young, all cancer, and all on Iams. Not a coincidence. You should be ashamed profiting from deaths of our loved ones. You should have recalled this, maybe I would still have my baby. Now I will live in regret forever feeding my cat poison. He may not be human, but his life was just as important to me as my family member. To be frank, more valued. That's how important he was to me. Now I will never get the chance to make it right. Please don't let this be you. Look how many people are writing about the same thing. You can't ignore the obvious truth to this horrible product and evil company that profits from this! He's never seemed to be a big eater and it takes him forever to eat his food, but all dogs are different. Last week we opened a new bag of Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed Formula. Within 48 hours of opening it, he was very whiny and not wanting to eat. We thought he was teething and tried watering down his food, which he did eventually eat. On Tuesday, he started vomiting his food up - couldn't keep it down at all, only vomiting undigested food, no bile. Also, he didn't have diarrhea. Even feeding him a very small amount made him throw up. I began to suspect the food and started doing some research and found a prior recall on the food, but per a phone call to Iams, it didn't affect our bag. They are issuing me a refund. I fed him a scrambled egg per our vet's advice and he kept that down. The vet did some tests and told us to throw the food away, as he suspected that was his issue. We've been giving him a prescription diet right now and he's had no vomiting since we discontinued the Iams. Now reading all these posts, I'm grateful that he didn't get worse. Something is wrong with the Iams food, and they need to do a recall ASAP!
