From the day I picked up my beloved kitty at 17 weeks of age from a highly reputable breeder who advised using IAMS foods, that is all she has eaten her whole life until about 2 weeks ago. She had already started acting strangely, trying & sometimes succeeding in vomiting, then having litter box accidents like never before. Then I heard about the recall & compared the information on the Orange Bag w/ the numbers on the FDA site. Horrors! I took the bag back to Walmart after photographing all pertinent information & posting it on my Facebook page to warn all my readers. It gets worse.

At this very moment, she is in the ICU overnight in the 24/7/365 emergency vet in Winston Salem NC, receiving IV fluids & her blood tests & exams are frightening. The vet w/ 30 years experience described her intestines as "rough" (meaning something is now radically wrong). She also said this will be costly to treat. $500 in expenses have already been incurred today & will continue tomorrow, money I cannot afford. A couple weeks ago, this beloved Persian cat has NEVER been sick. I am beside myself with concern about her sudden health downturn and am completely unsure how to fund her recovery. I have faithfully bought IAMS foods for 13 years for this kitty, 10 for my previous cat.

When I had to buy a different type of food after the recall, she refused to eat but a few pieces...she wanted her IAMS, but I was afraid to buy any more of the brand we have used so well for so long. Now from all the digestive upsets, she is suffering and can't eat at all. Will IAMS help me with my vet bill now so that she may receive the help she needs?

I normally feed Purina one cat food and natural, but I bought the Iams with my older cat in mind to try new brand and she liked it but the others did not.. When the recall came out I did not pay attention because I forgot I had the Iams. It wasn't til Saturday that my 18 year old cat started vomiting and refusing to eat or drink and she had awful retching usually foam and a little water.. I then remembered recall and looked up the brand and it is on the list for salmonella contamination.. She passed at 3:00am this morning after suffering a horrible painful death. I am unemployed and could not take her to the emergency vet because we couldn't afford to. I still have the cat food and was wondering if there is some place that can test it to see if it actually was salmonella or if she had other issues. She was declared in great health on June of this year by my vet. Has anyone else complained of death from this particular cat food?

After feeding my Australian Cattle Dog Proactive Health Dog Food on August 17th she started to vomit, then start to have loose bowels which in the next couple of days turned to bloody stool. After 3 days, I heard about the recall and immediately stopped feeding her IAMS. She remained lethargic, would not eat, continued with horrible digestive weakening ordeal. I have since then taken her into the family vet. As of yesterday, she is showing signs of feeling better and I have started to feed her Adult Pedigree dog food.

I have visited the IAMS website. I do not want a refund by sending in the proof of purchase nor vet reimbursement. I simply will never in this lifetime purchase their products and will let all my friends and family know about the undue suffering IAMS has caused many Furry family members. This was not a pet collar made poorly. This was the health of life of a living animal. I currently own 3 pets and look forward to a lifetime of pet ownership.......... without IAMS.

I purchased Iams Dog Food before this recall and I get two different kinds, the Naturals which is for my older dog and the Active Formula which is for my 2 year old Greyhound. Both dogs got sick and started Friday, it is now Wednesday and they are still not well. The older one won't eat and the younger one is vomiting and has diarrhea. My older one has this as well, and he won’t eat at all. I am taking them both to the VET to hopefully get something to stop the vomiting as they are losing some pounds. Also the VET mentioned they may have to keep them to make sure they are not dehydrated. Is IAMS going to help me pay this bill? I don't know, but I have changed foods already.

We bought some Iams Hairball Control cat food at our local Walmart, several weeks ago. We have 5 cats and all they will eat is Iams dry cat food. This has been the first time we had a problem with the food. We have been cleaning up cat poop and throw up all over our house. We have used a little over a half a large bag. It was time to pick up more, like to keep it on hand don't want to run out. We went to Walmart to buy some and we could not get any because it was in recall. Well if it was recalled, is that why my cats have been sick? The store told us to contact Iams because they would not sell it to us. This really has me upset. My poor cats have been sick and it had to be from the bad food we bought in this last bag. How would you like to get up in the middle of the night and step in throw up or runny poop? We rescue cats and do we need to change to a different brand of cat food. I always thought Iams was the best for the cats, for this is what we have used since we first started to take in these babies. I have to find something to feed them other than Iams at this time because I can not have sick cats. My problem is they are so picky that Iams is the only thing they like. What can we do?

We have only fed our dog Iams dry dog food since he was a puppy. Never gave him table scraps. Only rawhide & ice chips on occasion as a treat. He started throwing up & having loose stools & then quit eating altogether. Took him to the vet 4 times in the span of a month & 1/2 to do blood work & all kinds of testing. He lost 30 pounds in the span of 4 months until we finally had to put him down. My husband & our 2 boys (ages 4 & 6) are heartbroken. Heartbroken & really angry after seeing the recent recall. Chopper was a family member & a member loved by our entire neighborhood. Cannot believe what I am reading about so many similar stories. Wow. Shocked.

I recently bought Iams proactive minichunks. I fed it to my bullmastiff and rottweiler. The bullmastiff, who will eat any dog food, ate it and threw up sometime later the same morning. The rottweiler did not want to eat it at all. She sniffed it and looked at me. Normally I have no problems with my dogs eating their food. I did not feed them anymore of that food. I went straight to the store and bought something else. Have not had any problems with the replacement food. It was not Iams or Eukenuba. I still have the bag of food but now that I'm sure it was the food I guess I'll throw it away as soon as I'm sure my dogs are alright!

Update on the pug and chihuahua from yesterday: The pug's diarrhea has become completely blood and mucus. I have taken samples and pictures and spoken to a vet. We will be seen in the morning for tests and an exam. It is sounding an awful lot like salmonella, even though my bag was not recalled on the latest list. I really hope IAMS responds to this. I have called and left messages with corporate. I've never seen my babies this sick before. Neither of them have left the house since they started on IAMS and have had no other changes in diet or activities. This is so disturbing. I hope no other puppies become ill.

I have a 5-year-old Chihuahua and a 4-year-old Pug. They are both taken to the vet regularly and have no health problems. They have never been on IAMS before, but we decided to give it a try after seeing it at one of our preferred pet stores. We slowly introduced it to them, as we do with any new food, and they almost immediately began having diarrhea. The diarrhea has become so bad, they drink constantly and are extremely lethargic. The pug is also vomiting.

Our vet told us to try some chicken and rice (human food) for 3 days and see if they felt better. After seeing them return to normal, we began feeding them IAMS again. Now they are both very sick again and are refusing to eat at all. We tried feeding them their favorite foods (cheese, turkey, etc.) and they will not touch it. They whine while lying down, and only get up to have diarrhea or drink. It is very concerning, and another vet trip will be in order for the weekend.

I have seen several people with complaints in my area, and many of them were from the same 6.1 lb green bag of ProActive Health Small & Toy food with a 20MAY14 expiration date. I really hope IAMS cares enough about their product and the dogs who eat it to investigate and correct this problem. Please be aware that I am NOT asking for any sort of monetary compensation. I just want the problem resolved.

Iams Proactive Health - I have been buying Iams for my dog for 2 years and never had a problem. I bought a new bag of food for my dog a few weeks ago and when I first gave it to him he snubbed it which for him was very strange. He did finally eat it but whenever I would give it to him he would smell it and walk away. He did eat it so I thought he was being finicky then he started vomiting 4 or 5 times a day and I started to wonder if it was the food. I bought a bag of Blue Buffalo and the vomiting stopped. I tried giving him some more Iams and although he didn't eat it at first but did pick away at it. I can tell he does not feel good after eating the Iams and will not feed him it anymore. What the hell is going on with that food?

As I previously posted, lost 2 of my best buddies within 2 days of each other. Now, almost a year later, my little man Murphy is dying. He has a mass in his stomach area just like my sweet O'Malley. Taking him to a specialist in 2 days to see if we can save him. I honestly, truly believe the food changed my cats' metabolism or chemistry. I feel this will be the 3rd cat I will lose simply because I decided to feed them the "better" food. Iams should be more responsible and stop "apologizing" to all posts. If they cared they would recall their products.

We took them to the vet and their tests came back negative for everything so the vet decided to just prescribe them an antibiotic and it cleared everything right up and they started eating normally again. They then again got sick after eating the Iams. Everything cleared up after switching brands.

I feed Iams Weight & Hairball Control to my three cats. I've always considered Iams to be a superior brand of animal food. (I feed the Senior Iams to our 14 year old dog, and this is the food that seems to be best for her.) Two of our cats are doing fine on this food. However, one of our cats gets severe diarrhea with the Iams food. He seems to have a chronic case of diarrhea while on Iams. I accidentally bought the Purina Hairball & Weight Control, and the diarrhea cleared up.

The next time we ran out, I bought Iams again. Since then, his diarrhea has come back. (I did the gradual switch with mixing the other food with the Iams for a few days.) I feel that the Iams is the cause of his diarrhea, and I am very disappointed in the food. He is a long-hair cat, so he needs the hairball control food. He has no other symptoms. He is very active. I just paid over $25.00 for a bag of the Iams cat food, and I can't afford to buy him a different brand until next pay day. Unfortunately, I am going to have to switch brands unless Iams has a better solution.

I emailed Iams and they seem to act dumb about why I can't find it. It isn't in Petco, Petsmart, Walmart, or Target. Always used to be. The emailed response said it was at those stores in the 60134/60510 zip area, and it most certainly is NOT. I just stumbled across this site and I'm wondering what kind of coverup is going on by Iams. Why is there a HUGE number of illness in the last two months w/ this food? You (Iams) are obligated to tell us if there was a problem with the food.

Personally, my lab isn't sick, but I'm not terrified to buy another bag. Something is up, Iams knows it, but they aren't telling. I suppose Dena is going to respond like she has to the rest of you, but come on Dena, let's hear it. WHY HAS THIS DOG FOOD BEEN PULLED FROM THE SHELVES? WHY CAN'T STORES ORDER IT? Mini-Chunks is basically the same food, only a smaller nugget. What is the difference? Why is that food still available? If you are holding back on pet owners about a potential safety problem w/ the food, then I would be the first to sign up for a class action lawsuit. There HAS to be a reason. Maybe a local news channel can help us?

I am very sorry you are unable to locate our Iams ProActive Health Adult Chunks. I can assure you this product is still available in the market. It is an excellent food that is not only nutritionally complete and balanced, but also safe and healthy.
Our portfolio of products has expanded over the years. Few stores are able to sell all of our pet foods in our product line. Often, stores need to make choices on which products they will stock. Mini- Chunks is one of our most popular foods and has been out the longest. It sounds like most stores in your area selected Mini -Chunks as their product of choice (over ProActive Health Chunks).

I would very much like to contact you and help you find ProActive in your area. I again apologize for inconvenience and look forward to speaking with you.

I always am giving them canned food, but they treat the Iams canned with the same urgency as the dry food. And Dear Dena RVT, if you really had a "high level of nutritional expertise" then why don't you use this to bring your products up to maybe a 4 or 5 star rating? If you really appreciate people postings, then why comment with the same lame answer that you can't even feel sorry for what your company is doing or providing?

You know, since I have thrown the Iams crap away and been using the 4/5 star dog foods from companies that take the time to care about our pets/children, I haven't had to clean my dogs or spray down my lawn from the diarrhea from Iams. We have a Labradoodle that just turned 5. After feeding him Iams the entire time, both dry lamb&rice mixed with Iams wet, he has stopped eating. Several times in the past year, I have had to just throw the food away. I have tried another food and he still won't eat. Turns out Rudy has canine lymphoma, a terminal cancer. I was told to take him off all store bought food. That made me wonder. I noticed him sick last month and had to throw the food away. I truly feel in knowing my dog that there is something in that food that makes them sick. My best friend, my buddy, my pal will most likely not be here in several months. If I could turn back time, Iams would have not been part of his life. I am trying just chicken and rice for now. Something definitely changed in that food.

I have four small elderly dogs. One of them started with the bloody stool. I finally figured out which one, but shortly after, 2 more started with the same problem. I feed the green bag for toy breeds. The fourth dog has not gotten ill because he is the only dog who does not eat the Iams. He no longer has teeth so he is on a special diet. The other three all have the bloody stools. The mess this has created in my home and the sad condition the dogs are in is alarming. I finally threw the food out today and am hoping for healthy recoveries.

My two cavaliers were having bloody stool and diarrhea. I was worried and took them into the vet to see what was wrong. Tests were done and no parasites. They were given special probiotics and antibiotics. I knew something wrong when they wouldn't eat anything. Still were having diarrhea, then vomiting and lethargic. We took them back to the vet and it was discovered that they both had pancreatitis. They had to stay in the hospital with pain meds and IV for two days. Finally, I found this page about the dog food from Costco! Then I knew how they got sick.

Why isn't there a recall on this!!! It should be public knowledge that something in their food was contaminated!!! The bag was a new bag of Iams Probiotic - the 50 pound green bag. I feel Iams should be responsible for all these vet bills. Thank God they are okay now, and I will never buy from them again.

I have all 6 dogs suffering from diarrhea and 2 are vomiting. I NEVER feed my dogs anything other than dry dog food. They have never been allowed table scraps, etc. I have no doubt this food has made them very ill and the Target I purchased the product at is refusing to refund my money because I put the food into my Blitz feeder and 2 Sterlite plastic totes that I normally store their food in.

I will be contacting IAMS consumer affairs tomorrow to see if a recall has been done based on the numerous complaints of illness lately. I'm one ANGRY mama right now!!!

I just called IAMS and submitted a claim. I am being sent a full refund on the last bag of food. I have 3 small dogs (2 Chihuahuas and 1 Italian Greyhound) all in which have never had any stomach or bowel issues until the last 2 bags of IAMS. I took them to the vet and nothing is wrong. No worms, parasites or suspicious illness. Vet suspects bad food or something they ate. They have no access to anything toxic. Just their fresh water and dog food (well dog food might be considered toxic at this point). I am dealing with 3 dogs all with diarrhea at the same time and it's not pretty. Cleaning up after them is wearing me out, but most importantly, their health has declined. Dull coat, some vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss on all 3.

They are currently on a 24-hour no food to clean their system. I start them on boiled chicken and white rice for the 2nd time tonight in hopes to get rid of the diarrhea. In my opinion, it doesn't matter if it's a consumer issue or retailer issue on how the food might have been improperly stored. I don't trust IAMS anymore and have no plan on ever going back. With 3 dogs sick right now because of bad food, I am one ticked off lady. I'm convinced it's the dog food as nothing has changed. All 3 are having the same symptoms and they have not had one table scrap or access to any other food for their entire lives. Something is wrong with the current batches. I know my dogs.

I have been feeding my miniature Dachshunds IAMS their whole life. Two bags ago, in the very first bowl of a newly opened bag, my one Doxie started vomiting and having diarrhea. I immediately thought it had to be the food, although the other dog didn't seem sick. It took her a week, and feeding her chicken rice and pumpkin to get her straightened out. We finished the bag. I had chalked it off as a stomach bug... UNTIL we opened another bag. The first bowl again, the OTHER Doxie gets sick, and starts vomiting and having watery diarrhea with blood in it. It took me 5 days with a syringe, persistence, water and household cures for diarrhea.

I feared I would lose her but we fought together. I treated them both for worms, just as a precaution, but... they had just within the last 30 days had their shots and a dewormer, so that could not have been it. The other dog has been vomiting and doesn't finish her food. We now have 2 days' worth of food left, and I was getting anxiety over the next bag. Well, the next bag won't be IAMS. Everything was fine with my Dachshunds until the last 2 bags. I don't know the batch for the first bag, but the second one reads as follows: 210714-21JUL14-30804177-I1US61891. I don't know if Iams dog food is the cause or not, but after feeding from a new bag of Iams (green bag large chunk) for a week, our yellow lab female began refusing to eat it. We pour our dog food into a tote and throw away the bag, so I don't have a batch number. It was purchased on May 16th at Bomgaars in Alliance, NE. She has been on Iams her entire life of 8 years and has always been a very good eater. She had never refused a meal! But after a several days of refusing to eat (I even tried mixing it with broth, softening it with water, etc., as I thought maybe she had a sore mouth or throat from chewing a stick or something like that), I finally gave up on her food and offered her different food. She did eat, but was not acting right.

A vet exam found intestinal discomfort and lab work showed liver issues. All other labs were fine. She was extremely thirsty during this time, but tests for diabetes were fine. She has since been on home cooked food (chicken and rice) and some liver detox supplements. She has eaten well ever since and is slowly recovering. Her water consumption quickly returned to normal. Due to improvement in a 2nd set of labs, the vet suspects something she ate. We have searched everywhere and found nothing toxic that she could have gotten into, which is why it occurred to me that we had fed from a new bag of food just before she started going downhill. That led me to google Iams dog food problems and I found this site.

If you suspect trouble with a new bag of Iams, please let your local veterinarians know and also the place of purchase so they can compile a list in case of multiple complaints. I still have the dog food, but unsure how to go about getting it tested or what that would cost me. I already have $800 into vet exams and testing, but still no definite answers.

I was shocked to find this site and see so many people having the same problem with Iams food. Both my dachshunds got sick after me opening a new bag of food a couple weeks ago. They had diarrhea and then constipation to the point where they were unable to potty. The vet checked them for a variety of things and treated them for possible infection - worms and dehydration. They both refused to eat, which if you know dachshunds they ALWAYS want to eat! After a few days, they ate rice and chicken. It was over a week before I mixed canned food with the rice. Then I went to Petco and purchased a new bag of Iams. When I opened it, it had webs and worms in it. I returned it to the store and the man said to get a new bag (no apology!). I opened the new bag in the store just to check and moths came flying out!

Today my husband went to PetSmart and purchased yet another bag. It too has tiny little eggs in the bottom of the bag on the food. The people in both stores made comments that this isn't unusual for Iams! I have been using Iams products as do my grown kids with all their pets. Now we are afraid that our dogs and cats are not safe eating Iams. The company seems to be doing nothing to correct the problem. Is this going to be another situation (like the Chinese melamine in the food) where we have dead pets before they care?

I have been using this product for a couple of years now and it has greatly reduced my indoor cat's vomiting episodes. He seems to be healthier than ever. My problem started when I was given a rescued baby bird to raise. The way you feed a baby bird is by soaking dry cat food until it is mushy and mixing it with boiled eggs. You mash this up really good and kind of roll it into pellets to feed them. Okay, so you have to keep this in the fridge so it will not go bad. Then you scoop a small amount on to a paper plate and heat in micro for 3-5 seconds.

A couple of days ago, I noticed a small spark or two but did not become overly concerned. I just thought it was a bit odd. Today, however, it totally blazed up and even burned a hole in the plate. I know this is a microwave reaction to metal. To my knowledge, chickens don't put metal in their eggs when they lay them which means the only other place it could have come from is the cat food. I am now very worried about my cat. I love my cat; he is a member of the family. I don't know what is going on, but someone needs to be checking it out!

My other male cat is now getting sick. I called a vet and they said to check if there is any recall on the food. My cats are indoor cats in my household. It's just me, my husband and our 3 cats. My cats do not go outside. My one male is 11 or 12 years old; my female is 4 years old; and my bobtail is 5 years old. They have never been sick a day of their life. But they are very sick now. I just changed their food after reading about Iams' 362 complaints. My cats are vomiting and have diarrhea. My cats are my children.

I bought Iams Healthy Naturals with wholesome chicken on 4-27-13. After feeding my two dogs this food, they both began to have severe diarrhea and vomiting. Their symptoms seem consistent with salmonella infection. I obviously stopped feeding them the food immediately, but they are both still very sick and lethargic. I have used Iams products for a while, but I will never buy Iams again. I am just hoping they will come through this with no lasting ill effects.

My boxer rottweiler mix has a voracious appetite. I switched his food from Pedigree (which he liked) to Iams. I did it slowly, incorporating the new food over the course of two weeks. Oscar started picking out the Iams kibbles. When it was only Iams in the bowl, he refused to eat. I had to bribe him by crushing up crackers on top. Even then, he just tried to eat around the food. He also started having loose stools. After going through almost two bags of food, he had pretty much stopped eating. I switched to Nutro cold turkey and he gobbled it down with gusto. His loose stool went away. I threw out the remainder of the Iams food. I think he was trying to tell me something. I'm glad I didn't continue to make him eat the stuff. My vet also told me that it is one of the worst food brands out there. Pure junk he said. Do yourself and your pet a favor - don't buy Iams. It's crap.

She stopped pooping and eventually I had to rush her into the emergency room where they did x-rays on my dog and found that the food was just sitting in her stomach. Her stomach was massive. She was completely backed up from the food. $2,400 later, my dog was okay to come home and she finally started pooping (although the food really screwed up her stomach and was vomiting for weeks). At the time, the vet was not completely sure if it was the food that caused this. But I recently started giving her some Iams food mixed with this really expensive food, and sure enough, within two days of eating it, her symptoms started again. Thanks Iams Food. You should have to pay my ridiculous vet bill.

I used to give my cats Iams a few years ago and there were never any issues. Their vet said it was good; and since they seemed to do well on that food, I didn't change it. It wasn't until I took in a couple more kitties that I had to switch to a cheaper brand… Purina One. But I noticed they threw up a lot and one of my older cats had diarrhea. When I heard about Purina brand treats and some of their pet food causing illness in dogs and some cats, I switched back to Iams. The vomiting stopped, and my other cat's diarrhea did too… for a short time. Then they all started having diarrhea.

I had them on the weight control and hairball care formula first. So I changed to the regular multi-cat formula to the new higher protein one with chicken. The diarrhea hasn't stopped. They always have loose stool or diarrhea, and I'm worried sick about them now. I'm ready to switch them to a whole other brand. This is ridiculous. Now that I'm reading about other people's pets experiencing this as well, I won't be buying Iams anymore, period. This problem with their pet food needs to be addressed.

I thought it was a change in diet but later in the day, she started having dry heaves, so I called the vet. He couldn't find a reason for this but thought maybe it was morning sickness. The next day, she died. Do I think the food had something to do with it? Yes. She was perfectly healthy until eating the food. Her system suggests food poisoning. Why can't dog food manufacturers be held responsible?

My boyfriend and I got our Bonny as a puppy (Golden/Great Pyrenees mix) a year and a half ago. As some of you know, Goldens are very easy to train; Great Pyrenees, however, not so much. Because our Bonny has both breeds in her, she's great at some things but not so great at others. In order to train her, we used to carry a couple of the Iams Proactive Health Biscuits with us daily, broken into little pieces, to reward her for doing something well.

Within days of giving her these, she began to develop loose stools. I, thinking it was perhaps due to something she picked up on her walks, closely monitored her every move. She picked nothing up, ever. I then assumed it was possibly due to the baby carrots she used to get as treats, so I stopped giving her those as well. After 3 vet visits, to rule out any parasites, worms, etc., our vet informed us that maybe she just had a sensitive stomach and to switch her food, which we did to Science Diet Sensitive Stomach. However, the loose stools progressed to diarrhea, and then to both diarrhea and vomiting, not to mention endless gas as well as gurgling tummy.

Again, we took her back to the vet (this past February). And again, the vet could find nothing wrong. When I mentioned that I was giving her Iams Biscuits as treats, she didn't seem concerned since Iams is supposed to be a trusted and vet recommended brand. Finally, I decided to completely stop giving her the Iams Biscuits, hoping that would do the trick. And guess what? It did! I would hardly call this a coincidence, seeing as everything else in her diet aside from her new Science Diet food was eliminated. The only thing we have given her throughout the 1 1/2 years of being blessed with her has been Iams Proactive Health, small biscuits for adult dogs. Now that they are absent from her diet, there is no more diarrhea, no more gurgling belly, no more burping, passing gas, and vomiting. She's back to being happy as a dog should be.

Obviously, something is not right with the Iams brand. What I don't understand is why has no one done research regarding the hundreds of complaints? I could kick myself for not having found this website sooner! It would have saved my sweet puppy hours of being miserable and vet visits which terrify her. Shame on you Iams. And as for your lame "blanket response" to all of us moms and dads about how sorry you are, you can take your apology and shove it.

After just a couple days, they started to have really loose stools and would even poop in the house and their tummies sounded gurgly. Soon after, she started scratching her ears and underbelly a lot. So I took her to the vet and was told it was environmental (no fleas or anything). We took her off the IAMS food and back to BJ's brand. She stopped scratching her ears and would occasionally scratch her belly. So after a month, I fed her two meals of IAMS to see if it was the cause of her scratching. Sure enough, after two meals, she was back to scratching her ears and belly vigorously. Any vets out there with any thoughts of how long this will take to get out of her system or what she may be allergic to?

OMG, I had no clue this dog food was causing pets to get sick! Maybe if Iams would have recalled it, maybe my sweet baby girl Pebbles would still be alive! The food I was feeding her was Iams Weight Control (blue bag) when out of the blue, she suddenly fell ill. After she ate, I let her outside and she had diarrhea. I didn't think too much about it at first. About 1/2 hour later while outside with her, I noticed she was just laying on the porch not moving much and seemed somewhat lethargic. I called her name and she could barely lift her head to look at me. I went right over to her. I knew something wasn't right. I tried to get her to move and she couldn't even get up. I scooped her up and rushed her to the emergency vet hospital because I knew something was wrong with my girl.

She just laid there on the car seat. I talked to her all the way to the hospital and I could see it in her eyes - I had to get there and fast. I carried her in and asked for help. They immediately took her from my arms as bloody diarrhea was coming from her bottom. The doctor came in the room with my Pebbles on a bed hooked up to IVs. She was laying on her side and having a hard time breathing. She looked so sick. That's when the doctor told me my dog was critical and there wasn't anything they could do for her. She probably wouldn't make it through the night.

To say the least, I crumbled into a sea of tears and disbelief. I was heartbroken! How could this be when just hours before that she was fine? She was happy as she was dancing circles around me when I walked through the door from work and as we went for our usual walk around the neighborhood to now driving home with my sweet girl next to me in a pretty box and thinking how am I going to tell them that our sweet girl has crossed the rainbow bridge! Iams, I have always fed my pets your food. I choose to pay the higher price because I trusted that I was giving her the best, but instead I may have hurt her! If and when my heart ever heals and I get another dog, your food or any of your products will never go near them! I will only buy American made!

I have to say that I am totally appalled by Iams handling of this issue! Hundreds of sick or dead animals, and the best you can do is reply with a form letter?! Why have these foods not been recalled?! I, like so many of these other pet owners, thought I was doing a good thing for my pets by spending the extra money on Iams. Apparently, I was wrong. My dog has been having stomach problems ever since I opened his new bag of large breed chunks. Vomiting, horrible diarrhea and the sounds coming from his stomach literally kept me awake even when he wasn't being ill. I called our vet the very first night and checked online for a recall.

Since there wasn't one, I thought it couldn't be the food. I had just switched him back to the large chunks from the proactive mature adult and our vet suggested I mix them; that perhaps the switch had caused his stomach upset. So I went to the store and bought a bag of the mature adult. Every day when I filled his bowl, I would give him that with just a few of the chunks mixed in. He continued to have problems, though not as bad as the first 24 hours. The night before last, while laying awake listening to his stomach make all kinds of horrible sounds (I actually recorded this on my phone from my bed. It was that loud!), I decided to check once again for a recall and luckily came across this site. My dog and I have been through two weeks of hell all because you refuse to take responsibility of your product!

I am fortunately one of the lucky ones as after only 48 hours of no Iams food, my Cubby is feeling much better. I currently have him on the old, homemade standby and will be getting him some Hills Science per my vet's recommendation. Thankfully, both of my bags were not contaminated. Now I am wondering if this is why my last baby died of cancer and why I had to spend several hundred dollars last year to have a large growth removed from Cubby's face?! I totally agree with the one writer who said you should be ashamed of yourselves! Taking advantage of caring pet owners and hurting innocent animals. I don't know how you can live with yourselves.

She had to be put on several different medications as well, including anti-nausea. The doctor said it could have been a change in her dog food, which was purchased at Walmart. After blood tests, stool tests and x-rays, we still had a very sick dog for 7 days and a vet bill close to $800.00. Lesson is, don't switch dog food and buy premium product at premium stores. I am saving the bag just in case you want to contact me; also the remainder of the food. Both of my other dogs threw up that night as well, but they barely ate any of their food. My two other dogs are finicky eaters the one who got severely sick is a 6-year-old, stocky, healthy lab.

When my cats were little, I tested different brands of food and they seemed to like this blend the best. They have been eating Iams for three years. Last week, one of my cats suffered from severe vomiting and diarrhea. The second cat soon displayed similar symptoms. After a day and a half, they did not improve. We noted they got sick a couple of hours after eating. They indicated they were hungry, so I put some food into a bowl to test their reactions (we had been trying to find the source of their illness). They turned up their noses at the food immediately.

This was the first time they hadn't liked Iams. We bought a locally produced brand of food. They ate hungrily and haven't been sick since. Is it possible that there was a bad batch of food? I'd like to know what was wrong. It breaks my heart to see them look up to me when they aren't feeling well and I have given them something that will make it worse.

On Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, my dog Sally (Lab) started vomiting an hour after she was fed. She has 2 feedings because she is an older dog. I have had her on Iams Pro Health Diet Formula for about 2 years. I just opened a new bag that day. When she was fed at supper, the same thing happened one hour after she was fed. This is a dog that can eat anything and has a stomach of steel. She very seldom gets ill from anything she eats. By Dec. 31, 2012, she refused to eat her Iams in the morning. She was very sick all day and stayed to her self in a quiet place. I tried feeding her again in the evening and noticed how she turned up her nose at the food. I have another dog that is on different dog food, Summit (Lamb and Rice). I tried to give her some of that; she ate it! No problem. I then fed her Summit in the morning on Jan. 1, 2013, and by evening she was completely well, full of energy and wanted to play!

I am shocked that Iams dog food was bad. I will no longer use it. I am glad I know my dog well enough to realize it was the dog food and lucky there was some other type of dog food at home I could try. The Iams Pro Health Diet (blue bag) was purchased at Walmart a week earlier.

I just saw a video of some of the dogs at an Iams testing site. I am shocked and saddened that a pet food company would be so inhumane - one look at the body language of the dogs tells me that they are petrified. One dog seemed to have gone crazy at the sight of a human. Why do you suppose that is? I do not think that any study of animals in these conditions would be valid, considering the cortisol levels in their bodies. Do you even know what that is? If people knew what you are doing, they would not buy your products.

    Dear Barbara:

I work for Iams, and not 100% sure of the video you watched. Although, I am aware there is an old video on the internet. The footage was taken many years ago at a contract facility. This was not an Iams owned facility. Once we identified the blatant violations against our long-standing animal welfare policy, we immediately ended our relationship with that company. Our employees adopted the dogs.

Today, our feeding studies are done at pet owner’s homes or our own state of the art Pet Health and Nutrition Center. More than 70% of our “taste testers” are family pets, living in private homes.

For studies which require a more controlled environment, we use our Pet Health and Nutrition Center. We’ve invested millions of dollars to build this facility, which is staffed with veterinarians and nutritionists. It is a virtual “pet haven,” specifically designed for the comfort and protection of dogs and cats. It is a cageless environment – which I invite you to see for yourself at www.iamstruth.com. When it’s time for a dog or cat to leave our Pet Health and Nutrition Center, we have an excellent employee adoption program.

I’m sorry this outdated video is causing confusion and needless concern. We have tried unsuccessfully to have the video removed. Unfortunately, these days, all online materials seem to have a very long “shelf life.”

    Thank you.

My husband and I purchased Iams ProActive Health Ground Dinner Chicken and Rice to replace my dog's dinner for a few nights until I could purchase her normal dinner. The can was kept on a shelf in the pantry and she had the dinner on Friday, October 28, and on Saturday, October 29. On Saturday, our Westie vomited some of her dinner and was not interested. By Sunday, she was lethargic and not interested in eating her dinner or drinking. On Monday, she was urinating blood and vomiting brown. We were unable to take her to the vet due to financial restrictions at the time.

By Thursday, November 1st, we finally found a vet who was willing to work with us. It was determined our poor Westie was in kidney failure with possible infection. Our Vet believed she was being poisoned and we could not determine the source. After many blood tests, IV fluids, and drugs, my Westie is slowly on the road to recovery. She is still very ill and is constantly vomiting. She does not want to eat even though her food has since been changed and we must do it via syringe.

My Westie is only 7 years of age. She is the picture of perfect health. She never is sick and always has been up to date on her shots. The only thing that can be determined and it is my high belief that Iams ProActive Health is the source of my dog's demise. I contacted Iams Customer Service and spoke with a representative who only offered the cost of the can back to me and said no complaints have been lodged. If you are an Iams dog food owner whose dog has been ill since feeding on Iams, please contact them. I am extremely upset that they will do nothing about it. I have since contacted my FDA representative and I am now looking for an attorney to recoup the unnecessary costs of my vet bills. I am glad that my dog is slowly recovering, but she should not have been subjected to this in the first place. I believed that Iams was a reputable company but I now see that it is not the case!

He slowly started to refuse to eat his food and refused to go up or downstairs (which we later figured out was due to abdominal pain). Finally, he stopped defecating and drinking water, so we took him to the emergency vet. All tests were normal, so they put him on an anti-inflammatory painkiller. This has helped him tremendously. We took away the Iams crap and replaced it with the original, cheaper food we were giving him. He has started to recover and eat more each day. Iams owes us $412 for our vet fees! Iams Pro-Active Health - I wish I had read these reviews sooner as it would have saved my 13-year-old lab, Rogue, from illness. About a month ago, I took Rogue to the vet for what I thought initially was a UTI or leaking bladder and a slight anxiety issue that developed over the course of about a week. Rogue is an older dog, but she has always been very healthy with no major health concerns, and I thought this was probably just the first sign of her aging. The vet found an elevated level of white blood cells, but no other issues. Rogue was not lame, nor was she "acting sick" in any way. She was given antibiotics for 10 days. Around the end of these 10 days, the bladder issues had started to subside but still hadn't fully gone away, and she woke up one morning with a massive hematoma on her left ear. I called the vet and took her back.

The vet wanted her to continue the antibiotics longer before dealing with the surgery for her hematoma. Fast forward 8 days and the bladder issues still persisted at which point the vet recommended trying changing the dog food as she could see no other reason why a dog that has never been on antibiotics in her life would be seemingly "resistant" to them, and with no other sign of disease or illness, the food was the only explanation. The dog food has been changed, and Rogue has since started to recover from the urinary issues. The hematoma, however, will be lanced in an expensive surgery. My veterinarian believes the hematoma was an allergic reaction to toxins in the dog food. Be warned fellow pet owners. Iams is a complete disaster in terms of dog food. After years of loyalty to them, I will never purchase another bag again for the safety and health of my best friend.

I purchased a bag of Iams the other evening as temporary feed, because I ran out of his regular feed and my local pet store was closed. I chose Iams because I assumed it was the lesser of the evil compared to the other store brands available. Two days after feeding him this dog food, he began simply vomiting the food up, and nothing else. As the day progressed, he began throwing up a dark brown substance, which after researching, I came to find out was digested blood. While researching, I came across this site where other people were experiencing their dogs getting sick from Iams feed. Finally, he ended up throwing up plain blood and I took him to the local emergency veterinary clinic. While I cannot fathom a dog throwing up blood from simply switching his dog food, the veterinary doctor assured me that it was likely caused by the switch to the lesser quality food. I have fed my dog Purina feed before when I ran out of his brand without any issues. This is why I am drawn to the conclusion that this feed is very inedible, and should not be allowed for sale.

We have been buying Iams for about 6 months on the recommendation of our vet. They have sensitive tummies, so we have fed them the lamb and rice formula. We have had no issues up until this last week. We bought the large bag at Walmart, which is where we normally get it. But when we filled their bowls at first when they smelled it, they turned their noses up to it. They eventually ate it throughout the day. Our youngest boxer got sick first - she experienced extreme diarrhea and vomiting. We thought she might have gotten into something in the yard, because the food had never made her sick.

Boxers have touchy tummies so we didn’t think anything else about it. After a day or so of them not eating it, we became concerned. We supplemented the dry food with a mixture of cottage cheese, because it normally calms their tummy. On the third day, our older boxer started having what we can only explain as mini-seizures. When she would look at you her head would shake from side to side uncontrollably. We immediately took away the food and gave them something else. Within a day, they started behaving as normal.

I cannot imagine what might have happened if we continued to let them eat the Iams. We have the entire bag so we can send it with our vet for testing. I think Iams should be ashamed of themselves for adding subpar and not tested ingredients to the food because it's cheaper. Their "Name Brand" and high cost makes you think that they are more reputable. I am here to tell you they are not. I will go back to a locally made food. I will pay more to make sure my girls are safe with what they are eating. Shame on you Iams.

Over the summer, my totally healthy cat suddenly got violently ill and was vomiting everywhere. I took him to the vet and got him subcutaneous fluids. They could not find anything wrong with him, except that his stomach was very tight and upset. Then in mid-September, the same cat suddenly and for absolutely no explained reason got severe kidney failure. It happened out of nowhere, and I think I had just opened a new bag of Iams dry cat food. Thank God, I am a powerful energy healer and was able to bring my cat back from the brink when he showed almost no improvement after two days of hospitalization on IV fluids. However, I am now over $5000 in veterinary costs into this nightmare. And my poor cat is getting poked with needles on a regular basis, because we are still giving him subcutaneous fluids regularly.

After reading the reviews here and other articles online about horrifying animal testing being performed by Iams, I greatly regret that I trusted this brand based on the fact that it is sold at Whole Foods and supposedly had a good reputation. I have switched my cats to prescription k/d diet and Azmira (which apparently has never had a pet food recall in 30 years, proving it is entirely possible to produce pet food in a responsible and ethical way).

Horrified does not even begin to tell how I feel reading this site today. I will be applying as much energy healing as I possibly can with the hope that Iams will seriously rethink its entire business, including both the welfare of the pets who are fed this food and the welfare of the equally deserving animals who are apparently being tested on. It's time for a major wake-up call, Iams.

On September 8th, 2012, I purchased a $38 bag of Iams ProActive Dog Food Lg Breed for my 2-year-old Labrador retriever, who has been eating Iams since she was a puppy with no problems. When I opened the new bag of dog food and poured some into her bowl, she took some bites, would spit it out, and eventually snubbed the rest and never went back to eat it again. My husband and I assumed she was sick, took her the vet, which ended up being thousands of dollars to have tests ran to find out what is wrong with her. I think it is her dog food because they cannot pinpoint what is wrong except for the fact her white blood cells are high, her lymph nodes are enlarged, and her liver is mildly enlarged.

She is eating everything else, but has lethargy, nausea, which has been subsiding, and horrible diarrhea. Since this has happened, she has slowly started eating again, anything and everything but that Iams dog food I bought in September. I bought 4 different brands, including a new bag of Iams, to see if it was her or the dog food, and she eats all of them, except the bag from September. I think the bag is bad and is causing the health problems she is having. Something has caused her to become seriously ill, almost fatal - the vet thought she had lymphoma because of the terrible condition she was in. She is still very sick, but slowly getting better. I saved my receipt with the serial number - and I will be following up with Iams to address this issue. From all the other comments I see of other dogs having some of the same health problems, it leads me more to believe that it is the dog food that made her sick. Also, I am saving the dog food to see if I can have it tested to see if it's bad. Then, we will go from there.

We've always fed our Border collie mix, now 14, Iams dry food. In August, we couldn’t find the usual active maturity, so my husband bought an Iams mix for seniors. Our dog started refusing to eat, but eventually did eat hours later. He was happy to eat people food or dog biscuits, so it didn’t seem like an appetite issue per se. We mixed the new food with our old bag of Iams to get him to eat it. He became thirsty after starting the new bag of food and would have loose stools.

During this phase, this lasted until about a week ago, we had labs drawn. He had elevated liver and kidney enzymes, so he is getting worked up for some diseases. Meanwhile, we have switched food over to a Purina line. He has perked up, is no longer thirsty, and has a great appetite once again. I suppose it could have been a long illness (lasting more than 6 weeks), but we were curious about the possibility that the food refusal, excess thirst, and loose stools was related to this bag of Iams dry food, since the timing matches; and that is how we came to this site.

This past Monday, our poor Berner, Otis could not stop having diarrhea. I went to bed, but could smell from upstairs at 4:00am that he was still sick. Imagine my shock when I came downstairs to see blood puddles everywhere! I thought he was about to die! I had to take the day out of work to take him to the vet and then come home and steam clean the entire first floor carpets in our house.

Meds stopped his diarrhea, and a stool sample test showed no parasites. He has been on Iams for a while and has experienced intermittent episodes of diarrhea. It wasn't until I discovered this site that I realized the dog food is what is causing this. We are disgusted since the food is not cheap! We thought we were treating our dogs to a better diet, when in reality, we could have killed them both. Do not buy Iams!

Very Sick Dog - Sept 20th, 2012: I am so glad I searched Google and found this site! I have never used Iams Dog Food for my dog because I'm cheap and can't afford it. I typically buy the Wegmans No Name brand dog food. A week ago, I ran out of dog food and picked up Green Bag of Iams Dog food for Miss Ruby Dog. She started having issues with her bowel movements and I thought it might be because she was suddenly switched to the new food. She was having explosive and constant diarrhea. She was obviously in pain and not feeling good as her tail was tucked between her legs for 2 days.

I put her on a grilled chicken diet and gradually reintroduced the dog food. She was fine for the last 4 days. Yesterday, she received a bowl of the dog food and we are right back to explosive uncontrollable diarrhea and this time it has blood in it. I will be discarding the food and contacting the Target Store where I purchased it. I won't be buying Iams again; I will stick to the no name brand cornmeal blend food from now on. I certainly hope that Iams tests the food. I unfortunately dumped the dog food into our plastic container, so I no longer have any batch numbers of the bag we used. But it was purchased at the Target Store and I will pop over and find out what bags they have on the shelves there.

I’m a breeder of bichon frises. I used Iams chicken puppy food on pups, and the first bag was ok, but the second bag of Iams puppy food had different packaging and pro-active on the bag, and what a nightmare, as it nearly killed all the pups. They couldn’t digest the food, throwing up all over the place the bits of food – came out the same way it went in. I will never use Iams again. Thank god I caught it on time. Once I stopped the Iams puppy food, all the sickness stopped. I’ve now got them on Bakers chicken puppy food with no problems at all.

I fed my dogs Iams years ago and then they had a recall. I lost my precious dog to this food. He had all the same symptoms that people are talking about with the Beneful. The problem with the Iams was tainted by products from China. Is this the same problem; they bought by-products from China? The Chinese are killing our dogs and cats and poisoning our children with lead paint on toys. I have made up my mind not to buy anything that is made in China. I think they want us all to die. You all should do the same. I am using Nutrena food now and have been happy. I feed it to my horses too.

I just lost my vibrant 9-year-old cat Steveo. All the symptoms I am reading on this site, all are very similar to my cat. Loss of appetite and vomiting. He died yesterday in front of me, it was awful! I don't wish this on my worst enemy of what I endured, especially my beloved Steveo. Please, if you have your pet on Iams, take them off immediately! Yesterday when my mother mentioned that it's strange how all 3 of my cats haven't lived to 12, where all of her cats growing up grew up to 21, 18, and 20, and she mentioned, "Do you think it could have been the Iams?" It all suddenly clicked for me. My mum continued to say, "I never had my other cats on this food in England."

Three deaths, too young, all cancer, and all on Iams. Not a coincidence. You should be ashamed profiting from deaths of our loved ones. You should have recalled this, maybe I would still have my baby. Now I will live in regret forever feeding my cat poison. He may not be human, but his life was just as important to me as my family member. To be frank, more valued. That's how important he was to me. Now I will never get the chance to make it right. Please don't let this be you. Look how many people are writing about the same thing. You can't ignore the obvious truth to this horrible product and evil company that profits from this! Our breeder had our puppy on Iams Large Breed Puppy so that is the food we chose to go with for him. He's never seemed to be a big eater and it takes him forever to eat his food, but all dogs are different. Last week we opened a new bag of Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed Formula. Within 48 hours of opening it, he was very whiny and not wanting to eat. We thought he was teething and tried watering down his food, which he did eventually eat. On Tuesday, he started vomiting his food up - couldn't keep it down at all, only vomiting undigested food, no bile. Also, he didn't have diarrhea. Even feeding him a very small amount made him throw up. I began to suspect the food and started doing some research and found a prior recall on the food, but per a phone call to Iams, it didn't affect our bag. They are issuing me a refund. I fed him a scrambled egg per our vet's advice and he kept that down. The vet did some tests and told us to throw the food away, as he suspected that was his issue. We've been giving him a prescription diet right now and he's had no vomiting since we discontinued the Iams. Now reading all these posts, I'm grateful that he didn't get worse. Something is wrong with the Iams food, and they need to do a recall ASAP!

After today, we will no longer be an Iams customer. You ought to be ashamed after reading all these reviews. There ought to be a recall along with your shame. No animal should have to suffer, day after day and week after week, because of bad food. When is enough, enough? More expensive food is not necessarily the best of the best. Get well soon Skooter.

What is going on with Iams Smart Puppy formula?! When I ran out of my regular puppy chow, I saw Iams was having a sale on Large Breed Smart Puppy at my retailer. I thought "Wow! What a great chance to give my growing puppy a better quality of food. Just what he needs!" 24 hours later, my dog is out the door with explosive diarrhea. For the next 72 hours, I had to take my puppy outdoors every 15 minutes for diarrhea. Very, very bad diarrhea; nothing but brown water and stomach cramps. Horribly, I have watched my sweet brave dog be reduced to crying and shuddering because the watery discharge just wouldn’t stop and there was nothing I could do.

I called the emergency vet and asked what to do, and her first question is "Is it possible your dog may have been poisoned?" My answer was initially no, but after reading the comments about Iams Smart Puppy food that have been posted here over the last 45 days, I am beginning to wonder. I had to force liquids on him just to stay ahead of the dehydration and place him on a bland rice and boiled burger diet to combat this. Once my puppy is finally stable and can eat normal food, you can better believe I will be staying away from any Iams product. I feel horrible. I bought your product thinking I was doing something good and healthy for my dog. Your product damn near killed him! Thanks a lot.

My question is: with this many complaints, especially since all of them have the exact same symptoms and it’s happened over the last 45 days, do you think maybe it’s time to look into this and recall the product for the safety of your customer, perhaps before the puppy owners begin a class action lawsuit over the damage to their dogs?

Stupid me, I did not realize that my 4-month old lab's diarrhea could be related to her food until I reintroduced it to her; after a strict GI soft diet and she got diarrhea again. I'm talking explosive up the wall across the floor uncontrollable diarrhea. My suspicions were confirmed when my two year old Maltese threw up 10 times yesterday, after she ate my lab's puppy food, after we ran out of her adult Iams dog food.

My mom and I both feed our dogs Iams puppy food. We bought the same Iams puppy food from the same store on the same day and her puppy is also experiencing diarrhea and vomiting when given the food. She was placed on rice only for two days and regained her normal poops. Then when given the Iams puppy food, she had diarrhea again. Iams was recommended by my vet that's why we feed it to them! It cleared up but came back immediately when I reintroduced the food to them a few days later. I got more medication. Being the rocket scientist that I am, I figured maybe I should switch their food. So they've been on the Hills Science ever since. It almost seems a crime that with all your "standards" and quality control practices in place, you have failed to target the problem, which is clearly in your dog food! All these poor people have lost their best friends. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Just about a month ago, both of them got really sick - I mean to the point where by the time I got done cleaning up one pile, I'd turn around to find another of either vomit or explosive diarrhea. After the initial start, I fasted them for a several days and then started feeding them nothing but white rice. It took over a week of feeding water and rice before they were finally able to get everything out of their system. I'm still trying to get the weight back on my German Shepherd, who pretty much got down to skin and bones during the week and a half or so that she was sick.

Now that I've finally got things back to normal for a couple weeks, I'm having the same problem again! I am appalled to read all of these tragic stories of pets who became ill or lost their lives after eating Iams dry foods. I, too, experienced similar illness issues with my young healthy dogs and I contacted Iams about my concerns. I must say that the representative was very polite and seemed concerned about my pets and their sudden illness. I was given replacement vouchers for the food but I'm reluctant to use them for fear of further illness.

My dogs did recover after feeding a bland diet and gradually switching to another brand of dry food. The reason I'm most upset is that I was told there had been no other reported issues of suspected bad food. In reading the complaints/issues here, it looks like Iams' representatives have told many of these pet owners the same. If there have been no other issues, what are all these concerned pet owners talking about?

This has been going on for months. I offered to send Iams samples of my food but they declined. I would think Iams would want to either confirm or rule out the problem. I've been a loyal Iams user/breeder for decades so I am seriously disappointed in what appears to be a lack of urgency in resolving this issue. To all of you who have ill pets, I wish your furry friends a speedy recovery. To those of you who have tragically lost your faithful companion, I send my sincere sympathy. Iams Pro Active Health Adult Weight Control dog food poisoning - After several weeks of eating Iams Weight Control Food, my 13-year-old, healthy beagle suddenly refused her food and started vomiting. This was very concerning because she always devoured her food. Then, I tried her favorite food: cheese, chicken, and hamburger meat. At first, she ate very small pieces but would then soon vomit. She was acting lethargic and had diarrhea. I took her to the vet and after a blood test - it was discovered she had high liver enzymes. After a few days, she completely refused to eat. The last two weeks were very painful because when she tried to stand, her back legs would slip from under her.

I put her to sleep on August 6, 2012. When I gave some of the food to my daughter's dog and her dog became ill with the same symptoms, I began to think that it might be the food. It was not until I researched this problem on the computer that I realized others had the same horrible experience with Iams dog food. Hopefully, my daughter's dog will be able to recover. I believe Iams dog food caused the death of my dog. I think it is criminal for this company to continue to sell this food with hundreds of pet owners informing them of the harmful and even deadly effects of its products.

In May of 2012, I changed my cats' food from Purina One to Iams healthy weight indoor food. I did this believing they would get a premium food with better nutrition, and it would help with some weight issues that 3 of 4 cats had developed: O'Malley, age 12, perfect weight but getting older; Murphy, age 11, getting a little portly; Boo, age 10, a few pounds overweight; and Tom, age 5, downright fat. They all seemed to enjoy the Iams for the first week or so. Then, they began eating less and Boo started crying at the bowl. I initially thought the better, premium food was giving them good nutrition, and they did not need quite as much kibble. But then both Tom and O'Malley began to drop a lot of weight. After having fed them the Iams for about 3 weeks, I changed them back to One. Unfortunately, this did not seem to help; and after 4 weeks back on the One, I took O'Malley to the vet as he had become downright skinny. After a full bloodwork panel, he was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. The doctor feels this can be managed with twice daily meds for the rest of his life.

I then took Tom and had the tests done...he has been diagnosed with Diabetes. I will have to take him frequently to the vet to monitor progress on meds. I will be taking Boo and Murphy this coming week for tests. Both have actually gained weight, and all have been lethargic and do seem to want to go to the food bowl like they had formerly. In the past, only Murphy was a human food beggar; now, they all are. I don't currently have scientific facts to prove the Iams caused this. I do know none had ever experienced these symptoms prior to the change to Iams. I’m so upset and heartsick that they are not healthy and happy. This experience will cost a minimum of $1,200 in vet bills; and while I have no problem spending this and more to ensure my cats will become healthy again, I hate that my decision caused this.

My 7-year-old chocolate lab suddenly started refusing her food (Iams Weight Control or Iams Large Breed Weight Control (to maintain her weight, not reduce it)) and vomited once on July 29th, 2012. While she appeared to be acting mostly normal otherwise, this was very concerning as she is a dog that devours her food within seconds of it being in her dish and has never refused food. We were not near our veterinarian, so we consulted with a local one the next day. They recommended switching her to a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice) and giving her Pepto-Bismol every 4 hours as needed.

After 3 meals of chicken and rice with no more vomiting (and seemingly normal drinking habits, bowel movements, and a small decrease in her usual activity level), we attempted to reintroduce her normal hard food (cut 50/50 with chicken and rice) and again, she completely refused to eat. She would even refuse to go near the area in which her dish was placed. At that point, we started questioning if it was her food that was causing problems. The local vet recommended that we try some soft food just to keep up her nutritional status. She had no problem eating soft food. We did try to offer hard food at other times and again, she refused to even go near it. She continued to have a little decrease in her normal activity level, but then would have spurts of energy. We contacted our veterinarian on August 2nd and made an appointment for as soon as we returned home.

Over the next few days, she acted like a "normal" lab (sniffing around our fenced-in yard, wanting to chase her ball, pestering the cats) with slightly more naps than usual. We took her to our veterinarian on August 6th for a complete work-up (exam, blood work, urine and stool samples). The vet said her physical exam was completely normal. If I had not told him about her refusing to eat, he would have given us a "gold star" and sent us home. Her stool sample was negative for any parasitic infections. Her urine sample showed some dehydration. It was the blood work results that came back Tuesday that were the most concerning. It showed acute liver failure (all other results being normal, minus kidney functions slightly elevated due to some dehydration). With that, the vet called and had me bring her in immediately for hospitalization, initiation of an IV and fluids to rehydrate, and the starting of antibiotics to cover any infectious process that may be attacking her liver.

It was at that point that I really became concerned about her food. I did a quick internet search of "Iams dog food complaints" and found this site. I noticed a few other recent complaints that were similar to our situation. I then contacted Iams via their customer support line (listed on this site in the responses from Sandy from Iams). I stayed very calm (which was hard to do not being sure if my dog is going to recover and survive this incident) and explained to the representative our situation. I refrained from being accusatory and just said that if this was because of her food, that I wanted Iams aware and wanted to save any other animals from going through this (and owners, too!). She was very polite and expressed concern for my dog. She did inform me that there were no issues or recalls at the current time, but did take all of my information. I mentioned to her that if we did not find out any other cause of my dog's illness that I would be sending a sample in to our local major animal hospital that is connected with a college of veterinary medicine.

Within hours of my original call, Proctor and Gamble (pet health and safety representative?) called me back and took my information again and talked with me about our situation. I gave them my vet’s information and permission to review the records and results of her testing. I have nothing to hide, just my dog to save and possibly other dogs out there that are eating the same food. They did attempt to contact my vet at that point, but he was in surgery all day and unable to take their call. On Wednesday, my dog had an abdominal ultrasound that showed her organs to be "normal". There was no indication on that test of anything that would be causing liver failure (no masses, abscesses, no blockage of gall bladder, etc.). After those results came back, my vet did contact P&G and inform them.

My dog is currently in guarded condition. She is awake, "active", wags her tail, tries to jump on me when I go see her, doesn't want to go back to the kennel when we have to leave, and definitely has will to beat whatever is attacking her. She still will not eat any hard food period. They are attempting to give her a prescription liver diet, but it is a no-go. She will eat a bland/low fat diet that I took in (boiled lean turkey, boiled chicken breast, cooked peas, carrots, hard-boiled egg whites) with gusto. She is continuing to receive IV fluid and IV antibiotics. They will be repeating her blood work today. The only other test we are waiting for is a leptospirosis titer (which she was vaccinated for). If that comes back abnormal, then we will know that is probably what is causing her problems. If it does not come back abnormal, then I will be sending out a sample of her dog food to be tested, as the only other way to determine the cause would be by liver biopsy.

I will say to anyone else who is experiencing issues that seemingly have no other cause, please consider getting your food tested. Local to me is Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital (http://www.vet.cornell.edu/hospital) that will perform testing on "feed". If you are concerned or interested in having this done, it must be done through your vet. Your vet can call the Companion Animals number (Companion Animals: 607.253.3060) and ask to speak with someone in the lab. They can put your vet in contact with the doctor in the lab to discuss what tests would be appropriate for your food/problems/etc. It will cost you but if it means helping your pet, helping other pets, and making companies responsible for the "services" they provide, it will be worth it.

I have been extremely satisfied with the response I have received from Iams and P&G at this point. I have been contacted by them either for updates on my pet or just so they can update me on what they are doing on 2 of the last 3 days. Never have I felt that they are either uncaring or trying to ignore my concerns. I'm not sure if my admission of considering having my dog's food testing independently has helped in that aspect or not.

If you do have concerns about your pet’s food and consider calling Iams or P&G, I do urge you to be polite. The person that answers the phone is not responsible for making the pet food (if that is what is causing your pet’s problems) no more than the cashier at your local supermarket is responsible for a package of spoiled meat you purchase. Yes, if it is the food that’s causing the problems, the company would be responsible, but as the saying goes, "You get more flies with honey." I know being polite was very hard to do as I was in tears over my beloved pet but I managed. To anyone reading this who is going through something similar, I wish you and your pet the best of luck. I understand the difficulty in watching our beloved pets suffer and wish for the same outcome for your pet that I wish for my own.

After a day or two of the food, my Golden Retriever became ill, vomiting 12 times in an 18-hour time frame. Fearing the worst, I took her to the vet; and she was placed on IVs, x-rays were ordered, blood work was done, etc. All came back negative, so I was relieved. Well, that night after feeding our other two dogs the Iams, they both became sick. The common thread between all dogs is Iams. It's hard to believe a company who is responsible for the nutritional health of pets continues to produce hazardous products. I wish I would have trusted my intuition and switched dog food when the second round of recalls for Iams came in December 2011. Now, I am stuck with big bags of tainted food and a $700 vet bill. Thanks, Iams.

I have 4 cats, 3 of which were becoming rather "portly" (one actually obese), so I thought I would change them from Purina One to the "better, premium" Iams Indoor Healthy Weight formula. After about 3 weeks, I noticed my 4th cat was losing too much weight and my obese cat was as well. I took the 4th cat to the vet this week and they ran several tests and decided he was suffering from hyperthyroidism, a condition he had never before shown any symptoms of. He has lost 4 pounds, going from a healthy 10lbs a year ago to just 6lbs. All of which has occurred since the change to Iams. Obese kitty has gotten downright skinny, so he will be seeing the vet this coming week (no easy task since he was feral when we found him).

I will be alerting the vet to this website and have them do more extensive test on both cats. I shudder at the thought of any one of them suffering from kidney problems and if they both are diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, then I can only conclude it is a result of feeding them Iams. Both have what I crassly call "soupy poop" ever since starting Iams. I have, of course, slowly switched all cats back to Purina One several weeks ago, but no weight gain so far and still the soupy poop.

I have a 6-year-old Shih Tzu that I fed a very small amount of Iams Healthy and Natural Chicken Dry dog food for dogs ages 1-6. I purchased it on sale at a grocery store in the 15 lb. bag size. He vomited repeatedly the following morning. A couple of months ago, he vomited for about a week when I had mixed a small bag of Iams mini chunk dog food with a 25 lb. bag of his regular food Royal Canin Shih Tzu dry dog food. At that time, I did not attribute that to the food, but now I do and I see the connection. I used to feed my cats years ago nothing but Iams food, and now that I think about it, over the years, there were bouts of extreme vomiting experienced by both cats.

One cat at age 5 went into kidney failure and I had to take him to the emergency room right after severe vomiting. After that, he was put on Science Diet KD purchased at the vet, and for the rest of his life I had to give him sub-q fluids under the skin to make up for his permanently damaged kidneys. I also gave the second cat Science Diet KD food from that point forward. I never suspected the foods, but now I do suspect it. I'm wondering where you purchase the corn in your foods (from China, where there is no quality control?). I will never purchase your pet foods again. By the way, my cats were strictly kept indoors and got excellent vet care.

I lost my beloved pet. I purchased a 50# bag of Iams Proactive Health Large Breed from a Large Warehouse Bulk Discount store. As the price of food has gone up, I was happy to get the bag at just below $100.00. I have 2 pets that have been on Iams since I have brought them into my home. The short story is they both got sick (gastrointestinal illnesses) and were treated by my vet. The youngest recovered after fluids, antibiotics and supportive care. My oldest however, lost his 2 months battle last Wednesday. He passed away last July 25, 2012 shortly after 11am. Neither would, nor have touched the food since they got ill. I have since purchased Iams products with no negative effects, but recently began associating the purchase with the incidents, as I do not feel this could be coincidental.

Obviously, my energies have been devoted in taking care of my seriously ill pet, so this is my first posting. I have contacted Iams directly and have been told that they will definitely be contacting me. I hope with all my heart that there is no common thread between my thrifty dog food purchase and the loss of my beloved companion. I could never forgive myself. Again, this is not a direct assault on the character of Iams and its products but a call to all those that provide sustenance to our pets that we demand quality, safe, and healthy food.

Now, he is acting better (gave him canned cat food) but my female cat is not wanting to eat. I’m waiting to see if she perks up too after being fed a different food. We've been buying Iams Puppy Biscuits for many years over several dogs. We've, over the years, had to pitch a batch because of little moth-like bugs which apparently hatched after the product was opened. I thought when you wrapped the box in plastic wrap, the problem was fixed. However, we were invaded last month and found that the batch we last bought and stored half in a ziplock bag again hatched these creatures. And because the ziplock was not totally fastened, our house was flooded with those bugs. Can't you do something to prevent the eggs from being packaged with the product?

I first wrote my concerns on May 24th. Eloise and Patsy got terribly sick from 2 days of eating Iams (a new bag). They were treated at an Emergency Vet Hospital at midnight. Patsy being younger and sturdier has recovered. Eloise had fought the good fight but could not recover. She was put to sleep last week, after suffering a terrible last day. Iams continues to deny any problems with their food. How can they possibly not be aware, as of today, there are over 290 complaints on this site?

I feel for all the owners and pets who have suffered emotionally, physically and financially. Isn't it time they "own up" and do something right? Not just CYA. I have sent samples to Iams to be tested. I hope they will provide honest results. I have gathered all my information/documentation from website, vet bills, correspondence, etc. I am presenting it for reimbursement to Iams. Their next contact will be from my attorney. Join the fight, Iams need to take responsibility and stop the suffering. We are so sad every day without Eloise! So is Patsy.

We brought Jax home from the vet on Friday. The vet said he has done all he could do. His kidneys are failing. It has been a long weekend, hoping and praying he would pull through. His condition worsened and we are faced with the decision to get him assistance in crossing over. Jax will not eat, he does drink a little water and then promptly throws it up. At first we could get him to eat a little boiled chicken, but after the first day, he just turns his head away. It is at the point now that when he tries to stand his balance does not cooperate and his legs slip from under him. Our other dog, Shooger, has gotten better and is no longer vomiting, acting lethargic or refusing to eat. Once we had Jax at the vet, we immediately started feeding her food we had prepared ourselves: boiled chicken, carrots and green beans. She loves it.

We have no other explanation as to why two dogs of different breeds, ages, sex and weight would suddenly begin exhibiting the same symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy and refusal to eat other than the new bag of dog food that was opened and they were fed from one day prior. We have always been an Iams family. We lost our first pet to kidney failure almost 19 years ago, a Great Dane named Astro. Soon after we lost our brother and sister rotties, Boone and Callie. One was lost to a tumor and one to kidney failure. Never in a million years would I have believed that the food I was purchasing from a reputable company would have been responsible for my pets’ death. I do now. Our vet told Iams and he couldn't tell them if the pet food caused Jax to have kidney problems.

The food has not been tested, though Iams has offered and we have accepted to have the food tested. Iams is sending us packets to forward a sample for testing. We still have the open bag of dog food and we also plan to have it tested independently. This issue is not closed or resolved. Iams says they have not received any complaints. If your pet is exhibiting these symptoms and you suspect the Iams dog food, complain. Call their 800 number and complain. Follow through before many more pets are lost to diseases caused by this company. We will never ever feed our pets Iams again.

I've spent every day and night with her since this started to keep an eye on her and to continuously clean up after her terrible messes. She's only had an accident twice since we got her at 7 weeks until this happened. After talking with the vet, I stopped giving her any treats, just her puppy food. But she continued to get worse and I thought I was going to lose her. Thank God I found a complaint posted on July 5th regarding two dogs that had the same symptoms as mine. Since July 5th, I have stopped feeding my dog, Zoe, the Iams food and have been making her food myself. She's turning back into the lively puppy she was two weeks ago. I can't believe this was a coincidence especially it happening at the same time. I pray the other reviewers' dogs are okay. The review saved my dog's life!

We purchased a new bag of Iams around the 22nd of June. Our largest dog, a beagle blue healer mix named Shooger, was the first to get sick. Because our little red minpin, Jax, did not get sick, we didn't believe it was the food at first; though we both wondered because it was a new bag. Shooger was vomiting, would not eat, had diarrhea and was lethargic. We tried mixing cottage cheese with her food to settle her stomach and stop the diarrhea. It didn't work. A trip to the vet, who said she had a virus and prescribed pills and bland dog food for her. She started getting better about the time our Jax started getting sick. He was acting lethargic, wouldn't eat, had diarrhea and was vomiting. We took him to the vet first thing this morning on July 5th. He is having to stay overnight hooked up to fluids. His kidneys and pancreas are failing. He has pancreatitis.

We are very angry with Iams especially after reading this board. We called the number they keep posting here and it took forever to get through. We were told they had received no complaints or concerns, not one. Call and complain. So far our vet bill is $300+.

We had bought the mini chunks Iams food and thought that it was the switch from large breed to that, so we went and bought the large breed bag. Their symptoms did not subside. Then, I figured I might look on the web to see if anyone has had issues with Iams food. Sure enough, I found some complaints about other pet owners experiencing the same problem. I called Iams, as we had already purchased two 40 lb. bags at this time and they said it was the first they had heard of it. Lies!

They were very kind to send us vouchers for both of the bags of food after we sent in the UPC codes. In the meantime, after feeding both dogs hamburger and rice until their symptoms went away, we switched them to Beneful. I have always had good experiences with this with my Lab. They were fine. We received the two vouchers in the mail, so I decided to use one this past Sunday. Not even 24 hours after the Chesapeake Bay Retriever ate the food, she had diarrhea again! I just called Iams back. I am sending in the second voucher that we did not use and asked for a full refund for the two 40 lb. bags of food that we had purchased from the company. I will never buy this dog food again. Although their customer service team is great, their food is not.

I purchased a small bag of Iams on the way home from vacation. My dog had been on Iams for 13 years. He was sick within 2 hours of eating the new bag and eventually got worse. An eventual vet visit suggested the dog food to be the culprit, be it stored improperly before purchase at the small store, a bad batch. The thought being was that one particular bag was the cause. I had KC on boiled rice and venison, and boiled rice and ground beef. He recovered after 6-8 days. I've read some of the stories here online and called the Iams customer service listed in a complaint posted here. Though it was tough to get through, I eventually did talk to Sandy and she issued a credit right away.

KC is doing better and I will give the Iams another try to see how he does with it. He has always enjoyed it in the past and has a great coat and energy for a 13-year old wirehair. I feel that Iams treated me as well as can be expected. I needed to have KC in for his heartworm.

On Sunday, June 10, 2012, my 11-year-old black lab woke us up at 5 o'clock in the morning vomiting, diarrhea and would not eat. Her condition deteriorated throughout the day. She couldn't even keep down water. We became very worried about her because she was very lethargic and weak. We were afraid to wait until the morning to take her to the vet. So, we drove an hour to the nearest animal hospital. The vet on call was concerned because of her age. They gave her IV fluids and they did blood work to ensure her liver was functioning. Her blood work came back in the normal ranges. They kept her overnight and that was the last I thought I was going to see her. In the morning, she was still vomiting and refusing food.

The vet at that point suggested they do an ultrasound to ensure she did not have tumor or blockage in her digestive system. We did and that revealed no major issues. She did however have an inflamed intestine. It was only late in the day when she finally started to eat and we were able to take her home. It is only today that she seems back to normal. We have been Iams weight control users for many years. We just opened a new 40lb bag of food that Friday. Based on this experience and the results, we concluded that there had to be something wrong with the food.

We brought her home for 1 night and waited for the results of the blood test. That night she started vomiting each time that she took in some water.

The next morning, the blood test showed all her liver values were through the roof. They immediately put her on IV with meds to support the liver and pain meds. During the night, she needed a plasma transfusion because we were told that she was bleeding internally. This went on for 4 days until I could not stand to see her in pain anymore. So $7,500 later and 4 days of misery we decided to put her down. We also during this time had an ultrasound done and it showed that the liver was not cancerous but the liver, gall bladder and pancreas were all tremendously inflamed. The only thing that changed in her routine was that we opened a new bag of food.

She exhibited, within hours of eating, bloody stools, diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy. My older male has a tougher constitution. Although he had been acting subdued after his first feeding, we attributed it to his concern for our other dog. He had a second meal before he began vomiting and running diarrhea 18 hours later. When he vomited up the food, we realized it was the Iams Senior Bits that had made them both of them sick. My youngest (male) which did not eat the Senior Bits remained healthy. I have had both dogs on chicken and rice now for two days and they both appear to be getting better. We purchased the 20 lbs bag of Senior Bits from a Super Target store in El Paso, TX on 26 May '12. I, too, have been feeding my feline family members Iams cat food for years. One of them is a big eater and has never refused to eat anything. I purchased a new bag of weight and hairball Iams dry food and they both began to eat very sparingly. They walk up to the dish, sniff and walk away. One cat threw up 4 times. After a few days of watching them both not wanting to eat (they have no problem eating Fancy Feast in a can), I started looking online for information. I can't tell you how pissed off I am to read all of these posts. I feel terrible that a "trusted" brand has been making my pets sick! Iams is no longer a trusted name. Please don't feed this crap to your pets.

We have been very satisfied Iams customers for over 15 years. We never had any problems. Two weeks ago, I bought a new bag of food, smaller than usual as I noticed a price increase, but the same green bag I always buy. Right away, my 5 year old Golden Retriever began vomiting and refusing to eat the food. I took her off it for a couple days and the condition cleared. I reintroduced the food and she happily ate, but within 24 hours, the condition returned but this time, with blood in her vomit and in her stool. She has been on hamburger and rice for 5 days now, hoping to improve. I thought we might have gotten a bad bag of food, but now that I saw the other reviews, it sounds like it wasn't just one bad bag. Guess I have to find a new dog food.

I sit at the phone waiting for my vet to call about Eloise's condition. My two mini Schnauzers had become sick after eating from a new bag of Iams ProActive Lamb and Rice bought two days prior. They began vomiting and having diarrhea (with blood) on Monday evening. By Tuesday, they were both suffering. That evening, we took them to the emergency vet. We could not control the projectile of the bloody diarrhea. Our youngest dog was treated with fluids and RX for diarrhea and came home. She is improving on a diet of rice and chicken and still has to be led to the water bowl. She is still somewhat sedentary - not normal for her. Eloise is 13 and not as strong to fit this terrible reaction. She is on IV fluids, pain medication and now has started to suffer from seizures. We took our bag of Iams back to Target and got a refund. But as of today, we are out $1700 and perhaps the loss of our beloved Eloise. We are heart-broken and hope something can be done so other loved pets do not suffer.

I have been a loyal Iams dog food customer for many years. I usually purchase the large 40 lb dog food bag and have paid $32 at PetSmart and other establishments. Now, only a 33 pound bag is available for more money ($34). What gives? They say their costs are higher, really. All of a sudden their costs are 17.5% higher? They commented that the price that we buy the product at is the control of the store. They say not. Do they think that the consumer is that oblivious that they won't notice? Like the consumer thinks that they are buying the same amount because it is in the large bag for around the same price and they don't look at how many pounds are in the large bag? Well, there may be a few of those but I would think that their consumer would be sharper than that.

Maybe we should start a new movement to not buy Iams products anymore. Sending me a $3 coupon doesn't make me any happier! My costs of living are higher too, so much so that I don't feel like giving them my money and will go buy a cheaper (in price) product.

We have a 12 year old Lab that is very much a big part of our family. She goes everywhere with us from a ride to the store to wherever we go on vacation. I'm not the type of person to complain just to complain. In fact, this is my first letter of complaint ever.

Our dog has had Iams dog food since she was a pup, even when times are tough she still had her food. Recently, we had purchased 2 bags and 12 cans of Iams Dog food for her in preparation for a short lay off from work. We feed her every day at about the same time, many days she would be waiting for us to get her food. One morning, I fed her and left for a few hours and came home to find our girl had vomited in a few spots and found her to be kind of mopey, unlike her personality. We thought maybe she just ate to fast at first. The same night, we fed her again and she vomited and had very soft stools. The next few days, feeding went about the same. The following day she wouldn't even touch her food. She sniffed it and walked away.

The next 4 days, this went on that she stuck her nose up to her food but would eat some of our leftovers. We thought this was a very strange behavior for her as she always looked forward to her own food. I found this website and read some people’s complaints and found it amazing and saddening that we weren't alone. We have quit feeding her Iams as of this week and are now out the money for the Iams food and the new food we are introducing her to. FYI, this isn't about the money, but about our dog getting sick on a product that is getting more expensive while the quality goes down.

To get her to eat a new food we didn't use any Iams to transition her but have been making her burger rice and carrots on the stove, letting it all cool then mixing in the new dog food that was recommended to us at the feed store. We are still weaning her from the extras in her food. I'm not going to try to rush her as she is too old to be rushed. She seems to like her new food.

We are very disappointed in the fact that we had to switch brands of dog food at this point of her life as she always loved Iams products. I doubt that we will ever be Iams customers ever again. We wanted to also thank everyone that has written a complaint here as your info has been very helpful to us and in the recovery to our family member.

Overnight, all 3 of my dogs had severe diarrhea, fowl smelling and messes everywhere. I starting dosing them with Pepto and put them on a liquid diet to try and settle their digestive system down. 7 days later, one of my dogs seemed to be better and was really hungry since they all had quit eating for a few days. So, I let her have some more of the Iams, within hours she was running in and out with diarrhea again! It has to be the dog food! First, I thought it was a virus of some sort but in no way would 3 dogs do the same thing and at the same time! I have started them on a rice, meat, yogurt, pumpkin diet and they are slowly starting to eat, except the one that got hit with a second round, she is starting her recovery all over again.

This really makes me mad because when I called the company, they told me that they had no other complaints. Then a friend of mine found this site and sent it to me via Facebook. I will never buy this product again. And I will say, I have bought Iams for over 8 years but by reading this website, things are going bad with Iams and I cannot let my dogs suffer like they did again or possibly be killed by dog food!

We just purchased the new looking 33.5 lb bag about a week ago and she has been sick ever since. Her eyes look bad. She had diarrhea and vomiting. Our other dog is fine but eats Nutro. They never share food either. I have no doubt that the Iams food is making her sick.

We took her off of it and are now giving her chicken and rice to calm her stomach. Hopefully, she starts to feel better. Thank goodness, nothing more extreme happened. It all makes me angry though. Oh and since it’s not on the recall list (like it should be). I guess we are just out the $40 and any other expenses we occur because of this. I find it a big coincidence that the previous 40lb bags of that particular food were recalled. Then suddenly, they come out with a new look for the bag that has less food in it and now this "new" formula is making many dogs sick. Hmm, makes you wonder.

I found this site the other day as I researched dog food recalls trying to figure out what was wrong with my dog. I didn't dream I would be adding my story to it. I have a 2 1/2 yr old pitbull and a 10+ yr old lab that was astray until last Oct. I usually buy Purina One but a couple weeks ago, I got Iams mini chunks because I fed my Pit Iams when she was a pup and had switched to save a couple bucks. I thought I'd get a bag of "the good stuff".

So Monday night, March 26, my pitbull threw up stomach acid and then a minute later did it again but it looked as though it had fresh blood in it. I freaked out and called the vet. He said to give her Tums or Maalox and bring her in Tuesday if it didn't help. She ate grass like crazy and a little canned dog food, but then threw it up a couple hours later and had thrown up a couple other times Tuesday morning. She was moping around and I knew she felt bad. Usually she's bouncing off the walls! Now that I look back, the lab started eating grass too about the time I got the Iams and went from eating two bowls of food a day to not even one. Both have lost weight. (When I found this site I went and bought the Purina One and threw the Iams bag away.)

Anyway, I took her to the vet Tuesday afternoon. He said she looked great but to watch for worms. She had no parasites and gave her a shot for nausea and some special food. She had no appetite by Wednesday and I had read some other posts where people gave their pets chicken and rice so I cooked some. Late Wednesday, she finally ate a little rice and got a drink of water. She seems to be improving now, (its Thursday afternoon) and both dogs are eating well again.

After reading these posts and finding a petition from PETA trying to shut down the evil and horrifying research labs Iams has, it will be a cold day in hell before I ever buy a P and G product again and I'll be sure to tell everyone I know. I'm thankful that I got them off that mess before they died like some of the other did. How do people that cause God's creatures excruciating pain and suffering and act so indifferent about it live with themselves? I would blow my brains out to get some relief from my own company. I pray that all these issues are resolved and that there is some kind of justice in the end.

I received a communication from consumer affairs stating they had contacted Iams. I received an email and contacted their service representative and stated my concern. They said they are also very concerned regarding customer concerns. Please note before I contacted consumer affairs about this concern, I asked the representatives at Super Store about the above situation. Our cats did not want to eat. They started with throwing up and their stool had a foul order nothing like before. They were passing gas with a terrible foul odor. We had decided something is wrong with their digestive system and we started to think what cat food was different. It was Iams. We are very upset over this as we love our pets and do everything right as possible to keep them in great health. We are scared and angry. We started to look on the computer for symptoms like our cats had and the first thing we found was about Iams. There are so many other people just like us who started to feed their pets Iams.

We also have a pregnant cat and are concerned about her and the kittens she will have. What upset us the most is that Iams has had an ongoing problem and have done nothing about this except continue to sell their cat and dog food to unsuspecting uninformed people who think they are buying one of the better brands of dog and cat food. Further, the computer sites are full of people reporting the damage, expense of vet bills, and even the death of their pets. Yet all say when they contacted Iams/Procter & Gamble is that they received no help and even discourteous treatment during their inquiry about the damage done to their pets. Rest assured this family will never purchase Iams cat food again, and when at the store we will inform every person encountered not to purchase Iams products.

I have had nothing but problems with Iams for the last 6 months. The first 2 of my son's dogs get non-stop diarrhea that's a yellow-green. Then my friend's 2 puppies wouldn't stop throwing up and peeing this bright orange color and have to be at the vet's for 4 days. And what they do about it was sent her 2 coupons for some more of their crap.

My son complained to the company and even sent in his receipts for the 3 bags he had to throw away, and they never refunded him for the bags of food or made any effort to refund his money. The company is owned by P&G, and personally, I don't think they give a damn about the health and welfare of your animals. Look at all the websites devoted to Iams Kills. I believe it, and even my vet said that if my son would have kept feeding his dogs that junk, they would have died from dehydration. I will make a point to see to it that no one uses Iams. Boycott!

I bought the dietary and hairball cat food for our 2 cats, to switch them from 9 lives cat food. We thought that switching them to Iams dietary and hairball cat food would stop their problem, which is barfing up hairballs and barf. The nine lives was leaving orange stains on the carpet, which does not come out. So I figured I'd try the Iams cat food, where it could help their digestive system, and it would be better for them, but guess what, we've went through 4 bags of Iams, and we're still having the same problem. I believed in your product, and I am disappointed in it. Also, it sure wasn't cheap for a small bag either! Our 2 cats really love it too, so I hate to stop buying it for them, but I am very disappointed that the same thing is happening! We bought it at our local Walgreens. It shows on your bags a cat's digestive system, and how good it's supposed to be for our cats. What is this, false advertising?

I feel so bad that I killed our little Booger by feeding him something that I thought was good for him. I always thought Iams was a good food to feed my dogs, apparently not. Thank God we learned about this problem before we lost anymore of our babies. Lams, you should be ashamed of yourselves for selling something that is causing sickness in and even killing our pets. I purchased a bag of Iams proactive health for large dogs on February 3rd, 2012. I began slowly mixing it in with her old food on the 4th, 5th, and 6th. During the evening of the 6th, she woke up at 1:00, and woke me needing to go out. She had diarrhea, and then came back in the house, and vomited! I took her to the veterinarian, and they told me it was the food that caused it, and to put her on a bland diet, and slowly add in her old food. She was also put on 3 medicines to combat the diarrhea and vomiting due to this food!

I'm very disappointed with Iams. I thought I was doing my animals a favor by buying them a good quality food, and instead it made my dog sick. My cat is also being switched back to her old food, due to everything I've read. At the time of purchase I thought the food was on the expensive side but worth it for healthy animals, however it cost me $395.00 at the vet's office today, because it's not healthy for animals, and that's just for my dog, my cat seems to be okay for now, and she won't be eating Iams anymore!

But I have noticed when I get the canned food, the last 10- 12 cans I have bought have been dry, with no gravy, no chunks of meat, and a lot of barley. My dog is picky and that's why I get Iams. She loves it. But when I buy this particular food for her, I expect it to be what the label reads. I pay $1.49 a can. That's expensive but she loves it and I love my dog and want what's best for her. If I pay that much for food, I want what the label reads. You need to somehow check what goes into the cans. I feel I'm being ripped off and that's not fair to my pet. The food stinks also like old food. Please reply to this email. Thank you

Our English bulldog recently passed away unexpectedly for no foreseen reason, she was a healthy dog. We were feeding her along with our other 3 dogs the Iams dog food. We had some cases of diarrhea in our other pups and a lack of eating but didn't think anything of it until the passing of our bulldog. We, as consumers, trust the pet food industry with providing our animals with a good quality and nutritious food to keep them healthy because like us, for most people, our pets are members of our family and we treat them as such.

The pet food your company provides for our animals is no different than that of what we as people buy for ourselves to consume for our health, always looking for good nutritious foods to prolong the lives of our best friends. Our pets look to us to take care of them with feeding them good foods and taking them to the vet. office if they seem sick. I feel as if I have let my friend down by trusting a company like yours with her health. I will have the remainder of this food tested and find out if it was infected and if so I will be taking legal action.

I had two dogs. One was a Rat Terrier - beautiful, loving, amazing and full of live and love. He was almost five years old. I could not believe how loving this dog was and how much enjoyment he brought to my life. He had to be put to sleep in December due to kidney failure. It was was a very, very traumatic experience for me. He was always bouncy, energetic, and full of life.

In November I purchased Iams ProAcitive Small Biscuits. I fed these to my Rat Terrier, and my Yorkie Terrier mix. Within two weeks, my Rat Terrier began to be sick. After an extended hospital stay, my vet suggested he was poisoned. I paid well over $500 (I was lucky to have a good vet).

Iams small biscuits were the only change to their diet. I retracted the product from my larger Yorkie mix immediately. She is still alive two months later. Buyer beware and stay away from P&G products in memory on my pets and those that have gone before. Read the actual facts. Peace be with you and your pets. In memorial to Zero.

We just put our 5 year old otherwise healthy and very active German shepherd to sleep yesterday. His blood tests for his organs were all showing signs of serious problems. He survived the first round of bad canned food in 2007. I continued to feed him Iams lamb and rice up until his passing.

Within the last two months, he showed much decreased appetite, very lethargic, and overall not himself. The past two weeks, he really didn’t want to eat and he was urinating all over the house which is unheard of for Paxton. This week before we put him to sleep, he would only drink water and eat little or nothing. He was vomiting so I took him to the vet and his blood test came back all out of whack. I did not want to put my best friend through any more pain and suffering so we had him put to sleep.

Now my question, is he affected by the latest recalls of food? I still have the food and was wondering if anybody knew where to send the food for testing. I am currently trying to get the UPC codes from our purchase history to see if he was eating the affected food. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Paxton, you always be loved and in our hearts forever and if this turns out to be the case with bad food they will pay. Now, I am wondering if I was feeding him poison that caused his death. I am heartbroken over this. RIP Paxton. Please contact me with any help thank you.

Two days ago my aunt had to rush her yellow lab to the emergency vet due to vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. The lab is now recovering. None of these dogs have lived together or had any contact with each other in over a year. All were in otherwise good health and up to date on their vaccines. I too thought that it were hairballs and treated them regularly with petromalt.

After no improvement and researching the possible causes, I discovered that it was the iams food that was making my cats sick! I switched to a higher quality food (read the ingredients) without the fillers that Iams added to its foods. My cats have not thrown up once since the change! They were unable to digest Iams cheap fillers (corn was the worst) and became sick as a result. Iams had these in all their foods and should be ashamed to deceive pet owners into thinking they were choosing a quality product. Get your pets off of Iams and you will see the difference!

I decided since I ran out of that kind of food, I would switch her to Iams Large Breed Puppy food because it was within local distance to get it and not that expensive plus I thought it was a trusted food. Boy, was I wrong.

My dog has been lethargic, having diarrhea, yellow mucous in her stools, won't pee. Now, she has been on it for 2 weeks, won't eat or drink. I also noticed she has purplish gums, not good which means serious illness and I will be taking her to a vet asap. She is usually a very good eater and drinker and this just pisses me off bad that this food has no warning label or is even allowed on store shelves. Whomever said that if these were humans dying, they would take it off the shelf. I believe that is right. I am so scared that she is not going to make it and die especially since she is so loved and was an early Christmas present for my daughter who will be very disappointed and lost without her too. I will be suing this company if this does happen because it is so not right and I see that many people have similar complaints.

Today, I was told that I can only use four coupons, so I said, "Okay, I will go to my car and come back in." They said no, that I could only get four a day! The coupon said four per shopping trip not four per day! I truly believe that Walmart hates coupon shoppers! I did talk to the store manager. She said that four a day would be enforced and that she had the right to limit anyone! So, if I go in there and buy four, and I go back at night, then they are going to say "sorry, you have bought your four today?" Give me a break!

My perfectly beautiful Roman Bengal cat just passed away on July 03, 2011. He was a strong and healthy 3-year old boy with no previous history of illness until I started feeding him Iams ProActive Health kibble and canned food. I only had him for a total of 8 months and I only fed him this food. The food poisoned him so bad that everyone thought he had cancer. The tests were inconclusive to this and his symptoms were the same as others have written. I am deeply saddened by all this as I had no idea Iams was poisoning my beloved pet the whole time. I am interested in someone contacting me on what may further be done as I have amassed 5-7K in vet bills.

I have always used Iams puppy for all my dogs. Within the last four years, I have lost my pitbull, Tinkerbell, to two different fatal types of cancer.

I asked the vet how this could be possible, as she was always on schedule for vet appointments and shots. The vet said that the breed was known for getting cancer. Tinker was only eight years old when I had to put her down. I thought I would die.

Today, (9-2-11), I found out that my 11-year old lhasa apso maltese mix has lymphoma, and only has three months left, six months is a stretch. I have been feeding him (Jack) Iams puppy his entire life. He once had parvo, but thankfully he survived!

I have to admit that the only thing the two of my pets had in common is the Iams puppy food. My daughter found a website full of complaints regarding Iams and pets passing from cancer, organ failure, or bleeding to death internally. I have an 11-month old Jack Russell named Maggie...she will promptly be taken off Iams and switched to something else, as soon as Jack passes.

If this were human food or medication, the FDA would be all over this. So where is the help for our pets? Why is someone not watching and regulating our pets' food, and what's in it? If you can go to jail for animal cruelty, why can't someone regulate and watch out for our pets? I was always told that "Iams is the best food, less backyard pick up because the dog digests all the nutrients", they also absorb whatever it is that is killing our pets.

We as the "owners" of our "pets"/ children need to be watched over with regulations and someone to help us!

I noticed a worm on my kitchen wall near my Shih Tzu Gracie's Iams ProActive Health Petite biscuits, kept in a sealed dog cookie jar. I checked the cookies in the jar and there seemed to be too many crumbs. In checking the plastic storage container where the extras were kept, there was a moth flying around and many little worms, like the one on the wall, inside the container. I called my veterinarian and they told me to keep a check on Gracie's stool (she does get Heartguard). Today, I found dead worms in her stool. I was astounded and irate to know that I had fed this product to my dog and will be contacting my veterinarian again.

I stopped the food, gave them boiled rice, pumpkin and cottage cheese and slowly started to add Natural Balance Dog Food. They are both doing just fine now. My dogs are doing GREAT on it! I've read through these claims and it does sadden me that your babies have gotten sick but I've noticed that the problem is really in the proactive mini chunks. I've also seen LOTs of people buying IAMS of different kinds. Most of them are in VERY large bags. I say, "IAMS, thank you for making a food that my dogs do and look good on and that's affordable, thank you so much!"

I've fed my nine-year-old black lab mix dog Iams most of his life. Recently I purchased a new 17.5 bag of Iams large breed dog food. He ate it the first few days then stopped eating it. He wouldn't eat anything so for several days later I took him to the vet. The vet put him on antibiotics and did bloodwork.

The next day, the bloodwork stated his liver enzymes were in the 600 range (I believe it should be around the 10 range). He was put on a second antibiotic and a supplement but he kept getting worse until finally he vomited blood and lost too much weight. He died.

We have been feeding our 12-year-old cat this product (Iams proactive weight control and hairball for cats, dry food) now for about 8 months since we were told by the vet she needed to lose a few pounds. She had previously been eating Purina indoor and fancy feast dry food in alternating flavors. Recently, we have noticed that she is throwing up huge hairballs and bile, and has had a noticeable weight loss. We are taking her to the vet in the morning.

We were shocked to read some of the articles written about this product, since we never even suspected it might be the problem. We have been so happy that with increased exercise and her diet food that she was becoming healthier. Now, we are worried. She certainly doesn't seem sick.

We have two dogs, an 11 year old Bichon Frise and a 9 year old Maltepoo. Both dogs have been on IAMS dog food since they were puppies, starting with Proactive Puppy Food, then on to Mini Chunks, and as they aged on to the Weight Control. We are diligent in making sure they do not eat people food or table scraps, and we have never switched brands of food.

They get regular annual check-ups and are current on vaccinations. They have never been exposed to parasites. They have always been healthy, happy dogs but occasionally our Bichon would have bloody diarrhea, which would go away after a few days. Our Maltepoo seems to have chronic eye and ear infections (yeast infections) and sometimes diarrhea that goes away also after a few days.

However, our Bichon has displayed a progressive increase in her liver enzymes for the last few years. A few weeks ago we took our Bichon in for an ear infection the first she has ever had (yeast infection). In the process we did her annual exam and blood/urine tests. The tests showed her liver enzymes to be in the 600 range. We have run more tests and two ultra sounds and have found she has low grade pancreatitis and severe Gallbladder Mucocele. We are now in discussions with vets, surgeons, and internists to get multiple medical opinions to determine a course of action. In the meantime, our vet has suggested we put her on a new prescription food for dogs with intestinal problems, antibiotics and other drugs to reduce the mucocele. We have ruled out Cushings Disease.

Today was our Maltepoo's annual exam and guess what? She is now displaying high liver enzyme test results and pancreatitis, and we are now going through the same round of tests that our Bichon is going through. Is it just coincidence that two dogs of different breeds on the same diet, eating the same brand of dog food all of their lives have the same internal medical problems? After reading the customer issues on this website, I am seriously questioning the IAMS Pet Food products and am reporting this to Consumer Affairs and the FDA for further investigation.

We have a 10 year old Australian Shepherd, that up until Tuesday May 24, 2011, was an extremely healthy, beautiful dog. We ran out of dog food, and my husband went to the grocery store and bought a bag of IAMs mini chunks dog food which is the first time he had ever had it. Our dog Zack has (or did up to this point) an iron stomach. We varied his dog food his entire life and he never had any issues at all. He ate the IAMs food Tuesday night. By Wednesday he began to act uncomfortable, laying down, and was having bowel movements every time he went outside. Thursday was a little worse, but nothing alarming. When we came home on Friday from work we found that he had vomited and had diarrhea all day. He could barely open his eyes and could not hold his head up. He would not eat or drink on Friday evening. Today (Saturday), we took him to the emergency vet hospital and he has an enlarged liver and spleen due to what is believed to be the reaction to eating the IAMs. The doctor took x-rays and there was nothing in his stomach and no obstructions. Due to the issues, the doctor gave Zack IV fluids, anti-diarrhea medication, and antibiotics in order to control the extreme vomiting and diarrhea he was experiencing. Zack is currently extremely lethargic, and he won't eat or drink. We have to carry him everywhere because he can barely walk. If the medication does not work within 48 hours, we will have to take him back for more testing to find out what the next steps will be.

I have read other issues that are exactly like what we are going through and the fact that IAMs has allowed to keep their product on the shelf is ridiculous. If this was happening to humans they would have been in all kinds of trouble. Why are dogs any different? IAMs shouldn't be allowed to kill dogs just to make a buck, who is the ** allowing this to continue?

I took pictures and a video of the live maggots in the invested bag. I just called the store but they were closed for the night. Hopefully, tomorrow, I will get a refund and I pray that my pet does not get sick.

I have two cats that have been eating Iams brand dry foods for their whole life. I switched to Iams ProActive Health & Weight Management dry food in November 2010. In December 2010 my smaller cat Dexter started throwing up more then the normal hairball. The expiration date on the bag seemed ok, but I went out and purchased another bag just in case. He kept eating the food but then started vomiting 5-6 times a day. He looked very lethargic and became uninterested in his food.

I took him in to see the Vet and they did blood work, urine sample, checked his ears and so on. He checked out okay except for a little dehydration. They filled him up with some water and we went home. I tried giving him the dry food again and he didn't want anything to do with it. So I started giving both cats water from a tuna can, and boiled chicken pieces. Dexter (the little cat) didn't throw up for a few days, but then I started taking away the home cooked chicken and just gave him the dry food. He began throwing up again within 2 days and became extremely ill. I took him in to the vet on Jan 17th 2011 once again for x-rays and then surgery. They found some bumps on the outside of his stomach and his intestines weren't moving properly in surgery so they did a biopsy on both. We are waiting for the lab results. The vet also noticed that he had an intense ear infection and a bladder infection. My cat is still there on Jan 19th, 2011 and they are doing what they can to nurse him back to health.

While Dexter has been in the hospital I've been feeding Clyde my older and larger cat his dry Iams food again. On Jan 17th 2011 he threw up a hairball with some food and then last night he threw up again and again. Both with just bile. It's because of this that I decided to check the web for any problems with Iams food. My brand wasn't listed but I still called 1-800-525-4267 and talked to Mary Lou about my problem. She basically said that she would pass the information on but the brand in question is not made in the same plant as the brand that was recalled. I explained that the symptoms were the same and she didn't really have much to say.

I'm reaching out to you now because if you have an animal that is having these symptoms please make sure to take away the dry food and put them on something else for right now. Then contact your vet and then of course Iams. State your claim and lets hope that our animals get better. Please do this. The only way they will do any investigation is if there are enough problems with animals to justify such an investigation.

I'm on my way to take Clyde to the vet and to see my sick cat who is already there. I will also be giving my vet the number to call Iams to see if maybe she can give them more information.

Interesting read on the Iams Minichunks Proactive Health. I wondered why my border collie was refusing to eat. Today, she actually begged for "people food", and she never does that. She always goes outside or to the other room where she can't be seen when we eat. The numbers off the top of the bag are 120212 12 feb12 02854173 d6 us30940. Like another responder, I usually feed the Iams Large Chunk dog food and bought this because I couldn't find the other. I'm off to replace my dog food and will be returning this one.

Simon, a perfectly healthy 10-year-old male tabby, had his first seizure around 7 am on Christmas morning and held out until 2 am on Tuesday the 28th. Blood work indicated kidney failure and other problems consistent with toxicity. The cats were cremated but I still have the food. These cats ate Iams.
