I have three dogs who have had horrible reactions to Iams dog food. Our vet told us the infections and allergies were caused by their dog food. Our 1yr old English mastiff had to have surgery because an infection grew so bad and large in her ear, it look like a water balloon. My Chesapeake lab also had the same ear infection but we caught it in time before it got worse and our doberman/shepherd mix had a horrible skin reaction.

My dog suffers from seizure and now that I am reading. I believe it might be the dog food. I have been feeding her IAMS mini chunks dog food since she has been a puppy. She started having seizures over 2 years ago. The last one was terrible, she threw up all over. The last time I went to get her food, the shelves were almost empty, with a sign stating they are having a problem with inventory. I think this is so bad that nothing can be done to prevent all these sick animals.

My mother-in-law has the brother Himalayan of our cat, which is 8 years old. We feed him Hills Prescript diet C/D because regular cat food gave him crystals. I could not recall what he was getting at the time. My mother-in-law has Myca, the brother of our cat, which died of stomach cancer which spread to his lungs because it was not detected earlier. The only food she ever fed him was Iams. I have been reading other claims about Iams. My cat is extremely happy and healthy. He’s also 8 years old. I questioned the product of the food.
My cat died. Stomach cancer spread to his lungs. He was brought to the vet to put to sleep.

It is interesting that I could not find the address for Iams listed on their web page. In any case, I will describe the issues I have had. I have one 5 year old Yorkie who has been on Iams Minichunks since we adopted her a little over a year ago. A few months ago, I noticed that the name had changed to include the term ProActive Health Adult.
Soon after beginning to eat the Iams food with the new name, she has experienced vomiting and diarrhea, and at times it was bloody diarrhea. We took precautions by throwing away the Iams Minichunks dog food and replacing it with a fresh bag of the same. At times she would recover for 3 or 4 days then return to a cycle where her stool progressively returned to diarrhea, sometimes "explosively. " At times she would not touch the Iams Minichunks, which should have been enough of an indicator for me to understand it needed changed. I did not and her diarrhea worsened to the point that she started vomiting.
At the point where I decided to take her to the Vet, she recovered only to start the cycle again in a day or so. Having enough, I bought a new bag of dog food from Purina (Little Bites) yesterday and she ate her first meal last night which created a solid stool, which is a good measure of success. She again eagerly ate this morning and seems to be doing better. At this point, it appears to me that the Iams formula changed about the time we noticed the name change. Perhaps it just doesn't agree with my dog's digestive system, but I am concerned enough to suggest that they need to check their food to ensure they haven't introduced something harmful.

I have been feeding my yorkie Iams Proactive Health for Toys and Small Dogs (the green and pink bag) since he was a puppy.
Last Sunday evening, my 3 year old yorkie began vomiting. He proceeded to vomit about 6 times before I was able to get him into the emergency vet. The emergency vet looked him over and gave him some Pepcid (something they give to dogs for vomiting) and sent us home.
The next day, my dog began vomiting again. I then took him to our regular vet. Because of the previous incident the night before, my regular vet did blood work. The blood work mainly showed that he was dehydrated, which didn't surprise any of us since he had been vomiting. Next, the vet x-rayed him to see if he had swallowed anything inedible. The x-ray showed nothing unusual. She gave him a barium swallow, in case he was still sick the next day as the barium would help her see more on the next x-ray. She then gave him another Pepcid injection and told us to give him rice and sent us home.
One week later, here we are again. More vomiting, this time my dog vomited three times in about ten minutes early Sunday morning in the bed.
I thought of everything my dog had previously eaten the day before. I looked at his food bowl and noticed that most of the Iams dog food was there, except for a small amount had been eaten from the corner of his food dish.
I also remembered that over the past week, and even before then, my yorkie had been acting different with regards to his dog food. For example, when we returned from our regular vet, he ate the rice, just gobbled it right up as if he had been starving. The next day, after he had felt better, I filled up his dog bowl with the Iams, but later I noticed that he hadn't eaten any. He also was begging for his treats more often and any time we were eating he acted like he wanted some of our food. All throughout this time, he wouldn't touch the Iams.
Sunday morning was the first time I had noticed that he had eaten some of it, and not without consequences.

My dog has progressively gotten sick in the last week. I took him to the vet today and they really didn't find anything. He has been vomiting, not eating or drinking, and extremely lethargic. I did some research on a few websites and I've noticed other people with pets who have the same symptoms. There seems to be one common denominator and that is every pet with the same symptoms have all been fed the Iams mini chunks in the green bag.
Today's bill cost over $200.00 and we're not out of the woods yet. If the medication subscribed doesn't take affect, we need to take him back in for more blood work and testing which will most likely result in hundreds of more dollars spent. Much less the concern my family has and trying to ensure 2 young girls that their dog will be okay.

Two of our cats have been on Iams Weight Control for the last seven years via an automatic feeder. The cats always raced to their feeder and gulped down their food. On Monday,11/22/10, I bought a new bag of this food and put it in their feeder. They raced to the feeder when it went off, but didn't gulp down the food. They ate it with hesitation. By Wednesday, the male started hiding under the couch and the girl stopped eating. Why? What's wrong with this food? Luckily I have canned Wellness for a different (elderly) cat with kidney disease. I gave that to my other two and they ate it. The male stopped hiding. Unfortunately the pet stores are closed today as it is Thanksgiving. First thing tomorrow, I'm getting all Wellness canned and dry food. I'm not going to risk my beloved pets' health with Iams. Something is wrong. The cats know.

I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences. I'm pretty sure I can attribute my dogs digestive problems to Iams. I have 2 dogs that have been on Iams for almost a year. This last week I opened a new bag of the proactive mini chunks. Dog 1, Cater developed diarrhea with a lot of blood and vomiting 2 days ago. I took a stool sample to the vet and they found an overgrowth of bacteria. Dog 2, Dusty, just started with diarrhea this am, no visible blood yet nor vomiting. They are monitored when they are outside and I do not feed them anything else other then Iams. I will be changing foods once they're both feeling better.

Bottom line is, the program still does what I need less the email feature so my advice is not to do the updates. I believe the updates make the changes to include removal of features.

I have been feeding my dog Iams for the last 10 years and never had a problem until early July 2010. Chloe starting having very loose stools and vomiting. We took her to the vets who ran about $800 worth of tests and found nothing. We gave her anti-nausea medicine and canned food from the vet for a week or so until she got a little healthier. We then decided to put her back on her Iams. She wouldn't eat it so I decided to make it more enticing by adding water from tuna cans or cooked chicken and rice. Unfortunately it worked, she started eating the Iams again against her better judgement.
Within four days, Chloe was extremely sick again. Another trip to vet for more testing, stomach scope, IV, anti-nausea, and safe food, this time $1800. That trip prompted me to do more research online where I found this blog and the solution to the problem. Stop feeding your pet Iams! Chloe is an 11-year-old Golden that weighed 80 pounds. She now weighs 55 pounds and is emaciated. Iams brought my dog so close to death it is a challenge every day to get her to eat or drink. I am so afraid my 7-year-old son will lose his lifelong best friend because Iams continues to sell tainted food.
My frustration with this situation mounts every day as I read more horror stories of people losing their pets to Iams. Why hasn't Iams pulled the food off the shelves? How can we stop others from losing their beloved family members? Why hasn't anyone filed a lawsuit to stop this? Is Procter and Gamble that big and scary? Can anyone answer these questions for me?

P & G Pet Food products sold me the prescription dog food Skin & Coat Response E KO: 30 Lb. UPC Symbol 0 19014 21130 2. Two of my dogs died after eating this product. The prescription food was shipped by VetCentric. The food arrived at my home around May 18, 2010 and the recall for salmonella appeared later in June. I stored the food for a while until my dog ate the rest of the last prescription. Then I opened what eventually became the recalled food and fed it to my dog. On May 27, 2010 I rushed him to the vet, his gums were white and he was panting. He bled out and died overnight.
IAMS acknowledges that the facts of my dogs death bear some resemblance to a salmonella poisoning. Still not knowing that the product was recalled I mixed some with my other dogs food. The food was unlike what the other dogs were accustomed to eating and they considered the IAMS food a treat. Two months and two days after eating very small portions mixed with their regular food, my senior dog died. Both of these dogs had compromised immune systems, one due to being elderly, the other an otherwise incredibly healthy dog with an intestinal sensitivity to regular dog food.
I have contacted IAMS and they refused to examine the rest of the food that I still have. I divided the bag into a bin and kept the remaining food in the original bag and essentially untouched. IAMS says that it not their policy to test bags of food that have been unopened. How can they ever know whether their product is responsible? Is this a policy to never acknowledge responsibility? An IAMS vet tech communicates with me about how salmonella is everywhere and how my dog could have gotten it from places even within my own house. What they cannot tell me is how that salmonella which they say could essentially everywhere in the environment could have made its way into the closed and untouched remains of the food which I fear killed my two dogs.
IAMS has every excuse other than their product about how my dog could have died. They want to interrogate me about the lifestyle and habits of the deceased dog. All the while refusing to examine their product. They have offered to pay the medical expenses of blood work and x-rays of the young healthy dog that died. How will P & G - IAMS ever know what their product did or didn't do? They won't. Thus, they can always say we are a reputable company and as far as we know the recall was only precautionary and no animals have died. A truly reputable company would accept responsibility of finding out whether or not my dogs death could have been the result of their product.

I had believed that Iams was a good quality dog food and fed it to my dog for his entire life. My chihuaha had always been in good health until the beginning of Sept 2010 when he began having seizure type episodes. He was taken to the vet where blood work was done and came back normal. I was asked by the vet to get video of these episodes to determine what was going on. Meanwhile his breathing becomes worse and he became so lethargic that he could not go on walks. I then learned of Iams food recall and the problems that others were having with the Iams mini chunk.
I spoke with my vet and switched his food asap but the damage had already been done. Our Sylvester passed away on 10-31-2010. My family is completely distraught and it makes it even more infuriating to know that I paid my money for their "good quality" dog food and they slowly poisoned our dog. I would like to know why they have not taken any responsibility for any of this. I emailed Iams and was asked to call asap which I did but was asked to leave a message on someone's voicemail. Of course, my call has never been returned. They may not be able to replace my beloved pet but they need to take responsibility so that this does not happen again.

I was out of my dog's food, the same brand and type he has eaten for at least two years (Iams dry dog food, Weight control formula in the blue bag). I purchased a 17.5 lb bag of it at Walmart and promptly took it inside to feed him. My dog is a beagle and willingly eats anything, including his dog food without prompting. He refused to eat it. I scolded him, took the food up, scooped a fresh serving of food and tried again, he refused to eat it and pushed the bowl away with his snout. My dog did however go over to his treats' location and beg and plead so his appetite was intact. I was angry with my dog and insistent that he was just trying to eat treats instead of regular food.
October 23, 2010, same story. Dog refused to eat food. That evening, concerned, I crumbled a treat over it. He ate some of the food to get to the treat crumbles but the actual kibbles were falling from his mouth. A few hours later he vomited and that night he had loose stools. I thought perhaps he wasn't eating because his stomach was upset, yet he still begged for treats and human food and had no other signs of illness. The refusing to eat the regular dog food continued. Yesterday, October 27, 2010, our cat tried to eat the dog's food and our dog barreled into the cat like a linebacker to keep him at bay. Strange, I thought, since the dog was refusing to eat it.
Today, finally, concerned that he was refusing food, I gave him a can of wet dog food and he scarfed it up. I began to think maybe his teeth were bothering him, yet he just had a check up and his teeth are in great shape, plus he had no problem crunching treats. I went to Walmart today at lunch to buy a smaller bag of the Iams weight control and see if he'd eat from a brand new bag. At the store, in the pet aisle, there were signs posted stating that they had been experiencing "supply issues" with Iams and that the inconvenience was affecting "all retailers nationwide. "
Even though the Iams was available, I refused to buy even a small bag of it. The "supply issue" had me immediately suspicious. I bought a different brand instead. My dog ate this new food ravenously as soon as it hit his bowl. I called the company's customer service number and reported the product and lot number. They seemed concerned that my dog had been sick but did not recommend I take him to a vet. They were polite and offered me either a replacement bag (I declined) or a refund check. I agreed to the refund check. They assured me that the supply issues to retailers were because of production facility upgrades and that they have to ramp up their efforts to keep up with increased orders. I'm afraid if their lapses in quality control continue, they might not have the same customer base that they now enjoy and won't need all that extra supply chain efficiency after all.

Our dogs have been eating IAMS dry dog food for as long as I can remember. Both of our dogs are 13 yrs old but were very active and always healthy. Our Cocker Spaniel began having diarrhea and within 5 days, he was gone. The entire time, we thought it was old age and it was his time but after further research, we believe that the dog food made him ill.
To make a long story short, after hours of research and looking back at his behavior and the behavior of our Collie, we have determined that their food made both of them lose weight and become more lethargic than an old age alone would do. It happened gradually after opening a new bag of Mature dry food this past summer. We commented on the weight loss at that time but everything else was so gradual that we missed it. Sparky passed away in our arms last night and Asti will obviously be eating a different brand of food but this comment is for everyone who is feeding their dog with IAMS. We firmly believe that the food led to Sparky's death and Asti's weight loss and extra lethargy. Only time will tell if Asti will get better. Please stop feeding your dog IAMS even if they appear okay.

My beloved 7-year-old Chocolate Lab died this morning, October 6th, from complications of Acute Renal Failure. She started out vomiting, lethargic, sudden flinching when approached, walking crossed legged, and the final vomit contained blood. I had no idea after doing extensive research online that there was an IAMS Recall of certain dog foods. I am still trying to lock down the code list to see if the ProActive Health Weight Control Large Breed dry food is on the recall. She had been balking at this food for only 2-3 weeks, but I just chalked it up to a change in dog food for her. After reading previous posts by other dog owners, it appears she had the makings of Salmonella poisoning and it could have been a contributing factor to her other symptoms.
As of now, her death has definitely left an empty hole in the hearts of the family. She was only 7-years-old, still very active, loved being around the grand kids, was the most gentle, a loving dog who will be truly missed beyond belief. Her vets did everything they could to get her on an even keel, but to no avail. Her vet bill will definitely put a financial strain on our budget, but we will find a way. She died way too early and way too fast (been at the vet hospital for all of 2 days). She has left a deep void in our hearts.

I have an 18-year old cat who has maintained very good health despite his age. A couple years ago, he became very ill --vomiting and diarrhea around the clock. After much time, effort and money was spent at the vets with no result. I took my cat home from the hospital (off the IV and meds) and began doing research. I found that he had become ill from Safeway (Menu Foods) cat food that he recently started. I put him on Ark Naturals Probiotics and within the day, he was better. When I contacted Safeway and Menu Foods, Safeway was professional while Menu was below horrible. Safeway refunded my vet fees while Menu never bothered to return phone calls.
Fast forward to Sept. 2010. My cat has been on Wellness cat food since the Menu Foods problem and everything with his health has been great. Then unfortunately, I am out of cat food and didn't have the time to go get the Wellness brand at a specialty pet store. I also happened to be standing at Target when I realized this. After checking labels, I got a few cans of Iams cat food (Menu) to tide me over for a couple of days. There aren't many regrets I have in life, but this is one of them.
The next day, my cat suffered a horrible seizure in front of my children and me. He fell off his chair, his neck was distorted and he suffered horribly. The seizures continued several times a day and then he also stopped using his litter box (Cystitis). Horrible! He was lethargic and the seizures were getting worse. I have come to distrust vets and refused to take him to the hospital because of my last experience. I went online and lo and behold, learned of the Iams recall that happened, yet the products were still on the shelves. I knew it was the food again. Iams never returned my calls.
For the last month, I've been back on Wellness foods for him, daily Ark Probiotics and greens. I've also given him pulsatilla (homeopathy for pets, book on Amazon for more info). The seizures have stopped and his health has been improving. I urge everyone to stay away from processed pet foods (when I did the research, it was appalling) and check out alternative therapies for your pets. They cost very little, but help greatly. I believe in Wellness and Ark Naturals as, both times, they saved my cat's life. Please do not feed your animals by-products --Menu or Iams!

Would not eat or drink for 24 hours. After not being exposed to the food for a 24 hour period, she became more energetic and began drinking water again. I purchased her regular food, the proactive large breed formula and she has had one regular stool but still seems under the weather. After reading all of the comments on the internet, I may switch her food altogether. A few weeks ago, we purchased a new bag of Iams Mini Chunks Dry Dog Food (in a green bag). Late last week, I noticed that my dog was having loose bowels. I didn't attribute it to anything serious and I fed him some pumpkin, which was a common remedy. I felt something was just not right with him and I watched him for a few more days. He started panting for no reason and then his diarrhea became very bloody. I was horrified! We immediately contacted the vet and we took in a stool sample. The vet found no parasites, but said that the amount of mucous/slime in the stool was a result of an inflamed colon which most likely indicated a food problem.
At the same time, I started doing internet research and I saw recent identical stories to mine after dogs had eaten the same Iams dog food. I also read that some dogs have died! Also, one owner put their dog down, before they knew that it was the Iams, because they couldn't bear to see their dog suffer. I only wanted to get the word out there that there was something very wrong with this food so that other dogs/owners wouldn't have to go through this. We went through stress and grief of witnessing our dog's suffering. Our dog was very sick and we feared for his life. We hope that he is 100% okay now, but we will never know if there is permanent damage which may have shortened his life. We also have a vet bill.

No, they did not. Additionally, I made numerous calls to them (Proctor & Gamble/Iams), yet I never received a call back even after I informed them that all four of my dogs were getting ill from the recalled food. Once I finally did connect with Proctor & Gamble/Iams, they attempted to intimidate me by saying they would close the case if I would not give them permission to contact my vet. They had over thirty days to do so and they think they can strong-arm me into giving them more time? How can this be a credible organization? I wonder how their shareholders would feel if this information was made public?
I withdrew my permission for them to contact my vet, since not only did they not follow through with what they said they would do. I did not receive one ounce of compassion for the situation they caused. Three of my four dogs recovered from Proctor & Gamble/Iams' incompetence. Sadly, my sweet Brody did not recover. My pup was on the regimen with the deplorable food and had to be put down yesterday (September 28, 2010) since he could not recover from the damage Proctor & Gamble/Iams caused with their product. Iams informed me that they have lost my paperwork. Seriously? This only goes to show how grossly inadequate they are as a company, however, I realize that this is their problem not mine. My issue lies in the severity of the illness they inflicted on my poor, sweet pup which ultimately led to the loss of his life! Proctor & Gamble/Iams must be held accountable for the damage they have caused not only to my family, but to the numerous people affected by their inferior products.
Additionally, they threatened to close my case if I withdrew my permission for them to speak to my vet, after they had over 30 days to do so. Clearly, having my case open did me no good in over 30 days they did have the access nor did it help my sweet Brody --may he rest in peace. I was also told by the inadequate corporation that this is an "unfortunate" thing. Unfortunate? Unfortunate, they killed my pet! I, in no way, accept this. Iams cannot threaten people, who gave permission to them and they didn't follow through with what they said they will do. I have copies of all medical records that will be released at the proper time for the damages they are responsible for. I realize that none of it will bring back my sweet love Brody, however, I want consumers and pets protected from such gross incompetence.
I hold Iams solely accountable for the death of my dog due to the salmonella contamination he consumed from their product, which caused a weakening of his immune system. In addition, my vet had referred to me a specialist after weeks of illness. I have contacted the FDA about the incident caused by this worthless company and informed them of the injuries to families and animals, and the deplorable and cruel customer service I received. My sweet pup was hospitalized three times and developed aspiration pneumonia as a result of Iams' food making him so sick. He consumed the recalled food and my heart is broken beyond any reasonable means of expression and needlessly because of Iams --Proctor & Gamble.
For clarity, allow me to reiterate Proctor & Gamble/Iams killed my beloved pet who was laid to rest yesterday, after months of suffering at the hands of Iams/Proctor & Gamble! This is not the first time this organization has created such outrageous crimes by distributing contaminated food. I have not asked for 1 cent from this terrible company. Any money from them is blood money and I'm not looking to line my pockets. I want protection from such a grossly, incompetent organization. The information related to my pet's passing will be released at the proper time and to an organization worthy of the information. Hopefully, this will cause fewer families to be subjected to Iams brand. Iams is threatening me to close a file that they never did a thing about, unless I now let them speak to my vet. They had that availability for over 30 days, which they did not exercise the rights and now I have rescinded.
In closing, I wish to state that I will never be intimidated by such a company. I have proof that the food they distributed (and I purchased) was contaminated, as well as every medical record and test performed. Iams has been heartless in this entire ordeal and to be clear, it is not money I want --not 1 cent of their blood money. They killed my dog! The crimes P&G/Iams have committed are beyond outrageous and as I said, my sweet Brody's life was taken yesterday!

I have fed my 90 pound Boxer dog Lams since he has been 2 years old. I felt I was doing a wonderful thing for my dog and that Lams was a reputable company. His coat looked shiny and beautiful while on Lams food, making me think it was wonderful dog food for him. In November of 2009 my dog started having vomiting episodes and started belching as well. I didn't know what was wrong with him. He is an inside dog. I walk him out when he uses the restroom. He did not get into any food or poisons. I do not give him table food.
A few days after the vomiting episodes started while in bed one night I woke up and heard a lot of noise. I was horrified to see my dog having a terrible seizure (grand mal). He seized for 5 or more minutes and then fell over and looked like he was dead. He then got up was very hot and disoriented. He was disoriented for hours afterwards. The next night the same exact thing happened. I took him to the vet and they did blood work and a urinalysis. The urinalysis showed that he had high kidney enzymes but the blood work showed nothing. They thought my 4 year old Boxer might be experiencing kidney failure or it could be idiopathic seizures.
Today it is September of 2010 and my dog is on phenobarbital, rectal Valium if he has a seizure, and he still has seizures. He appears to be a beautiful shiny healthy dog, but he has seizures. They want to add another very expensive med to help him. We are devastated and wondering if we will get the privilege to live with him for many more years. I decided I would type in Lams in the search engine and seizures together, and I am shocked at all the forums I have read about people's animals having seizures after eating Lams. I am taking my dog off of this garbage and we will see if his seizures improve. After researching Lams food I have came to the conclusion that the ingredients/preservatives that cause dogs to be sick are pure garbage! Why else is my 4 year old dog having seizures and high kidney enzymes in his urine tests? My vet has advised me to try switching his food to a grain free, preservative free food.

The following is what I sent to Iams earlier this evening. I am just appalled at the mess and the reaction from my dogs to Iams Dog Food.
I recently switched my 3 dogs to Iams Mini Chunks Pro Active Health; proof of purchase **, expiry on 12/25/11. My 3 dogs became sick with diarrhea & vomiting within 24 hours. 2 have sprung back, I believe, but it is unclear who threw up blood all over my living room and urinated blood all over my dining room during the night on Wed. I believe it is the older Springer Spaniel because he has not eaten in 2 days now and just threw up again. I am extremely unhappy to say the least.
I will never buy this product again and am saddened to see it is not on the list of recalled items. I have lost a lot of money and time cleaning up after purchasing your product. I initially thought it was an adjustment to new dog food being integrated with the old. It was my error for giving Iams the benefit of the doubt. I was late for work today after cleaning up at least 1 full cup of blood.
Someone needs to contact me about this. I am hoping the Springer recoups on its own because a vet bill is not in the finances right now. Please check this batch of dog food. I have never seen anything so horrible in my entire life.
I don't want to say this but if my Springer dies because of this, you will not hear the end of it. Please don't let this happen to other dogs.
I am waiting for a reply and will update if necessary.

After filing my complaint, IAMS threatened me that if I didn't give them the authorization to speak to my vet after waiting for help, they would close my case. They are aware that I reported them to the FDA, Consumer Affairs, States Attorney's Office, as well as the BBB. How dare they threaten me. I have the rights too, as well as my dog. Please see below.
P&G Pet Food Products sold me tainted food and my dear dog became terribly sick due to this. I reported the incident to them on July 31, 2010 when the recall was announced. My dog had been terribly ill since eating this food. In fact, all 4 of my dogs got sick from the carelessness of IAMS. My 8-year-old dog wasn't getting any better and he was hospitalized this week for 3 days, but he was still not improving! IAMS did this to him! Then, to add insult to injury, IAMS had the worst customer service ever, rude to say the very least, not to mention the poor quality control. Never did they follow up and get back to me. Per IAMS' request, I gave them my vet information.
IAMS never followed through as they said they would. Big surprise from such an incompetent organization. After calling them yesterday and advising them of exactly what they did to my beloved dog, they became even more rude and uncaring. I advised them that I was contacting the BBB, the State's Attorney's office, and the FDA. Well, guess who called me today? IAMS! Since I rescinded my authorization to speak to my vet, they tried to intimidate me! They told me that if I wouldn't give them the authorization, they were closing my case. They wouldn't, of course, if I gave in to them. Is this how you run an organization? They had the opportunity to contact me and my vet for over 30 days, but they did nothing.
Now that I made good on my word of what I was going to do before my eyes closed for the night, they called me back and told me to do this or they would do that. My vet is not even involved anymore. I was referred to specialists after my dog ended up with aspiration pneumonia since he was so violently ill from consuming the contaminated food that IAMS distributed. I absolutely adore my dog. He is a therapy dog and now look what they have done. Then, they try to intimidate me? What is that about? They should have contacted me when I was so desperate in seeking help from them. Now that I did as I promised in notifying the FDA, The BBB, and the State's Attorney's office, as well as Consumer Affairs, they called! Can you believe this? What type of business are they running?
I have not asked for 1 cent from IAMS in reimbursement for the over $5,000 in medical expenses that I have incurred at this time. Honestly, their money is blood money in my opinion. Then, to tell me if I did not grant them a medical release at this time to speak to my vet, they were closing the case. I asked for them to give me a good reason why. How does this help me at this time? I needed that 1 month ago. Well, they wanted to hear what my vet had to say. Yes, IAMS is really concerned about my pet. They want to cover themselves and that is what this is about. Too bad IAMS, my records will be sealed and used for the appropriate parties at the appropriate time.
I do not need their threats while in the middle of my pets' medical crisis, which IAMS had caused. No, I won't be intimidated by such **. I did not give in and they told me that they closed the case! Clearly, having the case open had been of absolutely no benefit, but I will see what the rest of the organization has to say about this. I do have the information on who called and stated this to me. IAMS showed not one ounce of compassion for the situation that they created. I advised them yesterday that before I closed my eyes that evening, I will have all the parties notified and I did.
My medical records are not their business any longer. When I feel that it is appropriate, that information will be released. I want this company to be held accountable and responsible for the damage that they have done to so many families. No, I don't want their dirty money. It is blood money literally due to the loss of so many beloved animals. As stated, my dog has now been hospitalized for 3 days. The complication developed into aspiration pneumonia due to the fact that he was throwing up so much, thanks to the distribution of salmonella within the food. IAMS distributed tainted food to thousands of consumers. My pet was healthy prior to consuming this food. P&G claimed that this was a voluntary recall yet the FDA found salmonella within the plant for the prescription dog food, which our dear dog was on. P&G (IAMS) claims that it is voluntary. What choice is there when the FDA finds it and tells them?
IAMS acts as though no pet has been affected through the customer service area. IAMS takes no ownership over the damage that they have caused. I received a stinking check for the price of the food from IAMS. Who cares about that? I want my dog to become healthy. I have spent thousands of dollars in medical care since this happened and I have not asked for a penny from them for it. I expect accountability and protection to the consumers and their dear pets from such incidents. Our pets count on us, then to have these ** from this organization sell tainted food and not be held accountable? This is unacceptable! All I want is my dog to become healthy again. I am hoping for that and doing everything medically possible to achieve it. IAMS has demonstrated, once again, the gross incompetence that they are capable of.
This is now the second time that they did this to our beloved animals. It was in 2007 that they also had to recall dog food that they manufactured and distributed! When I surfed the internet, I saw thousands of pet owners were going through the identical problem with their beloved pets that consumed IAMS Vet Formula since July 2010. Despite all that, IAMS claimed the contrary. Can you please help with stopping such incidents and create consequences for such gross incompetence from organizations such as these? I thank you for your time.

We are a non-profit animal welfare/rescue/rehome organization. We have an adoption center in Columbus, Ohio. We have been feeding Iams Kitten Food (purple bag). All fecals have come back negative for parasites and bacteria. The kittens are still dying. A veterinarian donated fecal and culture testing. It came back positive for salmonella.
We are a group that gets no funding other than donations. We have to run up thousands of dollars of medical bills to support the kittens and cats symptomatically. More than that, can you put an economic value on the lives of kittens and cats? Then, there is the issue of our reputation. Several kittens that were adopted from us (even though they had slight diarrhea at the time of their adoption) have died and the public perception of our rescue adopting healthy cats and kittens out is rapidly diminishing. Iams apparently does not care about its consumers or the animals the consumers are buying for on a holiday. While our kittens are dying, Iams is on "holiday."

He was a young and, healthy cat with no other health problems. No toxic ingestion, or other explanation. He just stopped eating about 5 days ago, with no specific symptoms. The health of my dog has not (yet) been impacted by Iams dog food, and my condolences to all those pet owners who have been through these horrible accounts below. My complaint seems trivial in comparison, but shows how Iams really is in it for the bottom line and not at all for the "health and happiness" of your furry family member.
Iams recalled their dry veterinary formulas on July 30, 2010. My 10-year old airedale is on prescription diets to avoid food allergies. On recommendations by two vets I ordered 10 bags of Iams K/O veterinary formula. I also live in a very remote area in Canada which is accessible only by air. We have two ships a year (in the summer) to bring in bulk goods, the order of 10 bags was to come up by ship which cost me about $150. Since the recall occurred after the deadline to add to the shipping manifest my only remaining option to get the dog food needed for the upcoming year is to bring it up by air freight which adds an additional $1600 in cargo charges.
Iams refuses to assist in covering or reducing this cost despite the fact that I endure this as a direct result of their recalled pet food. Iams will, however, pay back the cost of the food ($950) and the sea freight charges I experienced ($150) but this still leaves me with no dog food for the year. The generic foods available at our store will leave my dog with itchy, flaky skin, pustules, and hotspots which have her constantly scratching and pulling out her hair. Long term feeding leads to chronic skin infections which are further impacting her kidney function...so not really an option.
To make matters worse, their representative, although clear to say that they can't tell me to feed the food, in the next sentence was telling me that the salmonella wasn't found in the food but in the facility. Feeding the food might be an acceptable risk when you are a short drive away from a vet. Or you have a healthy young dog. I am about two days, six hours of flying, and at a tune of $2500 for the ticket, away from my nearest veterinary clinic. I'm not into taking these kinds of risks with a 10-year-old dog! The stress of the flight and layovers would probably finish off what the salmonella started. Nope, it became quite clear that Iams is in the dog food business for bottom line and reading the horror stories below, I am avoiding this company's products from now on, leaving me footing the $1600 bill for replacing recalled dog food.

This is my third post on the poison that Proctor and Gamble (Iams) are allowing our innocent animals to consume with horrific results. Not only is it making an outrageous amount of animals across the country very sick, but killing them as well. Do not call Iams, they are not concerned. If so, they would have pulled their poison from the shelves a very long time ago. They are only trying to cover their own butts and bottom lines. A year ago, our beloved Robbie, a beautiful healthy Australian Shepherd ate Iams mini chunks and like others, he suffered severe diarrhea for six weeks and multiple emergency room visits.
Exactly 4 months after Robbie's suffering from the effects of Iams poison, he was diagnosed with Lymphoma and underwent chemo. Robbie was a fighter and lived 7 months with his chemo. Our veterinarian stated the event that happened with the Iams in August might have triggered the cancer. We lost our entire world on July 19, 2010, just a year after getting so sick from Iams. The grief is overwhelming what this sweet, loving, gentle little guy went through. I have not checked this site for some time now and once I did, the outrage that this is still going on infuriates me.
Proctor and Gamble should be held accountable. We too, filed a complaint with the FDA,what are they doing about this? I have never been so disgusted by a company in my entire life. The FDA should do their job and remove all Iams products. This company only cares about their profits and will continue to get away with murder! I don't think they will be happy with a class action lawsuit now, will they? Is that enough of a deterrent for them to stop hurting and killing our pets that are not only pets but very special family members. A coupon or refund does not bring back our pets’ lost and is an insult. Tell me Iams Proctor and Gamble, are you feeding your pets with this poison?
Good to know that Evo had no idea when Proctor and Gamble bought them. It is good to know the name of another product not to buy. All of you at your company should be ashamed of yourselves. The pain you have caused our special companions and the grief that so many like me live with, heartbroken to not see my 4-year old boy who was so loved and missed. I gave him your poison and will have to live with that forever.
It is time to put a stop to this now! What is this claim about ‘internet scam? I am a real person that lost my best friend. Are all these people wrong? No, my boy suffered and it was because of your negligence. Your CEO and all involved should be fired. The loss of Robbie is extremely painful everyday. Financial expenses went into several thousands.

It turns out that I believe our 14 week old Collie is smarter than I am. When we brought him home I bought Iams Premium Protection Puppy food. He did not like it but ate slowly during the day. I was surprised that he did not consume as much as I thought he would. Two days ago he woke us at 4:30 a.m. and rushed from his crate and out the door. His stool was very loose and he seemed distressed. He again had us up at 6:00 a.m. and it was the same, he rushed out and loose stool. During the day there were many trips out, accidents in the house (a first for this little guy).
During the day while we were away he messed in his crate (again a first). We also had vomiting. I took the Iams away, fed white rice last evening. This morning I again put out the Iams. He would not touch for more than a small mouthful. I took it away and started my research! I totally believe it is the food. I am sorry about this because in past years we have always felt Iams was what our dogs needed. No more. If I have to cook for this guy from our freezer/pantry I will. We recently (8/6/2010) purchased a new bag of Iams Large Breed Dog Food (Green Bag) from Costco and our 5 year old husky/lab mix became violently ill after eating only one 4-cup serving. Within 5 days she went from being a perfectly healthy/active dog in her prime to vomiting blood, lethargy, diarrhea, critical dehydration, and systems in septic shock.
My wife called the Iams phone number and was told they weren't recalling that dog food at the moment. After a significant amount of research we discovered that our dog most probably has a really bad case of salmonella. She is currently at the vet, on an IV for dehydration, and being stuffed with antibiotics.

About two weeks ago, my 2 year old English Bulldog, who I fed Iams Large Breed Puppy, died. I obviously was consumed with grief and assumed it was my fault. We live in Florida. I assumed once again that maybe she was out too long. Well then I noticed that her baby a 3 month old Bully had excessive diarrhea. I thought he just had a sensitive tummy, so I changed his food and within the day, he started to recuperate.
I then noticed my Dogue de Bordeaux was getting thin. In the mean time, my Bully knocked over the bucket that had the Iams for the big dogs, and ate a bit. The diarrhea started again. Picked all the food up and ensured he did not get back into it. He has been well since. When I think back, I remember that we had a couple of times when they go through bouts of diarrhea but the vet told me there was nothing wrong with them. Just that they, at times, had digestive issues when growing since their parasite test was negative, and x-rays showed no signs of deformities in their tummies.
After much thought and consideration of the passing months, I decided to research the food issue with Iams and found this website, full of concerns as well as other sites. I then consulted with my family who also fed Iams. My mother told me her two dogs almost died last month from diarrhea and blood in the stools. I have confirmed that there is an issue with the Iams dog food. I called them, and like they have told many others, the food that has been recalled, was not the one I was feeding, but they would look into it.
Then they called me back and instructed me to have my vet call them to discuss the case, three sick dogs later, and one who died. Do we live in America where companies are supposed to be held responsible for their damage, and higher standards? Lets all get together and do something about this craziness. Vet bills are over $1000. My pet, who also breeds died. She was a source of joy, as well as income. She cost $3000, and her litter net was $4800.

On July 24th I decided to google Iams and see if there were any problems like mine. I have been using the Iams green bag for 15 + years, not the mini-chunks. The first dog got sick the week of the 4th of July. We purchased the food the week before. Two 40 pound bags from Petco. We have three large dogs (a shepherd, and two collie/bernese mountain dog mixes that are brother and sister) and the first one got sick with diarrhea in his crate (which never happens). It has been rotating between all three since then. We thought maybe they had gotten into something because they like to eat grass, etc. The shepherd, however, is an all indoor dog that does not leave my side and has been vomiting on and off though along with the diarrhea. None of them have had blood in anything. Yesterday she had good stools and today is crying and having diarrhea, one hour after eating. This prompted me to google Iams and the word diarrhea. The problem was on and off but has now worsened. Because it was on and off, I was not sure if it was the heat wave we have been having also. They all do not like extreme heat that we are experiencing lately. They are spoiled indoor dogs. I have called my mobile vet service and she doubted it was bad food. I have called Petco and asked if they knew anything (recalls, etc.) and got an attitude and denial.
Today is Aug. 5th and since the above problems, I have switched food. They are all eating Fromm Gold since the 24th of July. They are all fine on this food. They are active again and have no symptoms. Iams refunded my money for two bags of food and cut me a check on the 28th of July. The rep actually blamed Petco for the problems. She stated that it sounded like Petco stored the food improperly and the meat and oils went rotten. I doubt that is what happened and believe it to be salmonella. It was two separate bags of food also. The shepherd eats from her own. This was obviously not just a single bag of bad food.

He was dehydrated and needed IV fluids from the vet. We changed his food about 4 days ago to a science diet, chicken/rice flavor, and he has done extremely well. He is also on antibiotics.
On July 4th, our 12 year old golden retriever passed away after going into cardiac arrest. I never would have thought that perhaps the Iams dog food we were feeding her could have had something to do with her passing. Who knows? I am having her stool tested on Monday, August 1, 2010, just to see if this has damaged her in anyway. I will take further action if this is the case. We began suspecting that Iams Healthy Naturals could be causing a problem for our otherwise healthy and energetic dog when he began vomiting all over the house and brought up huge quantities of undigested food (we measure out his food twice/day to make sure he doesn't get overweight, and the amount of food that came up was way more than just his last meal, so clearly the food was not being digested). The other thing we noticed while he was eating the Iams was our normal "vacuum" dog who eats anything and eats it fast would hover over his food bowl, eating much more slowly, almost unable to chew the food. It seemed, and began dropping a lot of it half-chewed, as he struggled to chew it up.
We took him to an Emergency Clinic, which they later found he had a sore spot on his neck (possibly from having this hard food lodged in it?) but X-rays found no blockages. $300 later, we had no answers but switched him to homemade ground beef, eggs, and rice, which he ate without incident. I contacted Iams to tell them of what happened and ask if the food had been recalled but they said "no other complaints had been made". However, she said she would give all information to another department (Pet Research and Health or something). So then I asked, "Would you have access to the information compiled by this other department, to know if others have raised similar concerns?" She said, "Well, no". I kept the bag just in case we decided to have it tested, but we discontinued feeding it.
That was several weeks ago and our dog has been eating a different brand of food for the past week or so without incident. Last night my husband accidentally mixed some of the old food back in, and our dog stood motionless over the bowl mid-meal, shaking, as if he was either going into shock or ready to vomit. We made him an egg this morning instead of feeding him any dog food, and he threw everything up whole including all of his undigested food from last night. I cannot believe Iams has not recalled this food. Now we're going to have to take him back to the vet and face more medical bills, not to mention the toll on our poor dog. What on earth is in this food? Does anyone know where we can have it tested?

Two weeks, ago my fiance and I witnessed our 4 year old Brussels Griffon suffer from diarrhea, vomiting and lethargy. The vomiting was so bad that she wasn't throwing up food anymore, but bile. It started happening at night and we watched her closely as it continued into the morning. We thought that she had gotten into something, but she is a shadow dog and rarely leaves our side. We went over all the possibilities and one of them was that my fiance just bought a new bag of Iams mini chunk dog food a few days before. She has been eating this since she was a puppy.
We took her to the Vet the next day and the doctor gave her medicine to stop the vomiting along with some pills and canned food for digestion (not Iams food). We were told to give her the meds along with the new canned food twice a day for a few days. We did, and the diarrhea/ vomiting stopped immediately. We kept her on it for a few days and then started mixing her IAMS food with the canned food, since she wouldn't touch the Iams food by itself, after this. The diarrhea started again, no vomiting, so we took her back to the vet to get more medicine and canned food. After being on only the canned food and the meds the diarrhea stopped.
Again, I tried mixing the canned food with the Iams (not believing that it could be the food that we had been giving her for years). Guess what? We are here again with vomiting and diarrhea. She is also lethargic and she is panting more than usual (this is when she is resting or trying to rest, because she is in a constant state of anxiety). We are taking her to the Vet tomorrow morning and I will be alert of the complaints on this site and I will contact the FDA. I cannot believe that this has lasted this long without any word from the company. If I have to start cooking her food, then so be it. At one point, I thought it was a bad bag of food and threw it away, only to purchase a new one with the same results. I now know that it is the Iams food. I am not worried about the cost of all this, I am just worried about my dog. Someone needs to be alerted to this and I will alert as many people as I can.
Maybe this is a new thing for Iams, but when this many people have a problem in such a short period of time, it is cause for alarm! !

I took my dog to the vet for annual checkup 3rd week of June. Clean bill of health, said she could stand to put on 3 or 4 pounds. She's 8, so he suggested either putting her on regular food (had her on a healthy weight food prior) and supplement w/ glucosemine or put her on a food w/ the supplement in it. Purchased a bag of Iams ProActive Health Large breed. Her health spiraled downwards. I began suspecting the food and found this site. I immediately stopped feeding her the Iams food. My black lab is 5 years old. I have only ever given her Iams products for meals. I also exclusively feed my cat dry Iams food. The last 2 months she has stopped eating. Not that her appetite has decreased because she still begs for treats. She has not had issues with diarrhea or vomiting. She pants and drinks water incessantly. When I switched her food last week from Iams to another brand, my dog's appetite went back to normal.

My Border Collie has eaten Iams Mini Chunk dog food for the past four years, and has done well. Recently, he became very lethargic, unsteady on his feet, and having some pain in his back quarters. A trip to the vet (including xrays to determine possible injury and blood work) showed nothing more than dehydration.
When he didn't improve in a few days, we returned for another vet visit that again resulted in no answers. The dog was eating, so I put him on a bland diet of chicken and rice and he improved markedly, although throughout this whole ordeal, he refused to drink. Since he was doing better. I decided to begin to mix in the Iams and wean him away from the bland diet.
His original symptoms immediately returned, this time with vomiting and very dark diarrhea. After extensive internet searching, I found this site and I am convinced that the dog food is to blame. We had just opened a new bag (purchased at Wal-Mart), and I suspect that there's something toxic in it. I've emailed Iams and I am awaiting reply.
Meanwhile I'm back to cooking chicken and rice, and I am out the cost of a large bag of Iams (not cheap! ) and $250 in vet expense. Another odd occurrence that no one has mentioned, he also blew out his coat at this time, rather odd for mid-summer. Maybe it's significant but maybe not. I don't know. Cost of dog food, $15. Cost of vet, $250 to date. Dog still is not well. I am hopeful that we've caught this soon enough, to ward off lasting damage, but who knows? What is in this stuff anyway?

My mother purchased the Iams Small Bites for large dogs which she always does for her standard poodle. She called me because she found a clump of capsules inside the bag and one outside the bag, next to the dog dish. I picked them up, looked them up on the internet and found them to be antibiotics used for puppies.
I called my veterinarian and he advised that if the dog had eaten any, the bitter taste would have caused her to spit them out, but he didn't think they would hurt her. I contacted Iams Pet Food and they gave me a name and address to send the capsules for testing. We decided not to send them in the event the dog became sick or more seriously ill. We never heard any more from Iams ,except for the free coupons for replacing the food.
A few weeks later, my Mom was feeding her dog the same food she purchased with the free coupon, and her dog became sick, vomiting, blood in her vomit and stool. I advised her to immediately discontinue the use of the food. She got a high quality food and started feeding her dog and to date, the dog is no longer sick and is gaining back the weight lost during the period it was sick while eating Iams. The dog was very sick, the cost of a vet visit, a wasted 40lb bag of food and the uncertainty of future health problems with her dog. The next time I see warnings about pet food like I did with Iams, I am not going to risk using the product.

I was feeding my 2 pug-mixed-breed dogs with Iams Mini Chunk, from the green bag. It was a new bag, and I noticed my dogs were reluctant to eat it. The dry food came with a free can of sample wet food, so as a treat, I gave each dog a tablespoon of the wet food to encourage them to eat. That night, the smaller dog had diarrhea all over the house, and began vomiting in less than 48 hours.
I was hoping I could wait until the morning, and take her to my regular vet, but she started passing large amounts of blood with the diarrhea. I took her immediately to the emergency vet, where she was admitted, and given fluids. She spent 3 days on I.V. fluids and was diagnosed with HGE. My other dog became ill with the same symptoms and was put on fluids also.
My vet did suggest food contamination, and after seeing all the complaints about Iams, I am convinced it was the dog food. There seems to be many problems with MenuFoods products. I have spent over $1,000. If there is a class action law suit, I would like information.

Taken to the vets, IVs, and medicines, and a couple of nights, not thinking they were going to make it.
Put on boiled hamburger and rice for the 2 year old dog, and put him on burger and rice diet. Everyone started feeling better, so I put them back to the IAMS large breed puppy formula diet. Now, all 3 dogs are sick, and back to the vet for dehydration, vomiting, and bloody stools. I called the IAMS people and they were very concerned. They gave me coupons for replacement bags of Eukanuba. I have over $3,000.00 in vet bills, but everyone is doing good now. I'll be paying the vet bill ($3,000.00) for the rest of the year, at least.

On June 10, 2010, I went to a local pet store and purchased Iams PA Health Large Breed Puppy Food #44 because someone had told me that this food would be much more nutritious for our new lab puppy that we had recently gotten. She is 5 months old. The manager of the pet store told me not to give the food to the puppy straight, but to mix 1/4 cup with the other dog food that we had been giving our lab pup. In a few days, he said to increase it to 1/2 cup mixed with the other dog food and so on. So we started mixing 1/4 cup with the other dog food and I noticed that our lab pup was having some loose stools. But I did not give it much thought because I figured she was just adjusting to the new food. Well, when we increased the Iams to 1/2 cup mixed with the previous puppy food we had been giving her, she acted like she did not want to eat it.
Well, we just kept giving her half and half and she finally started eating it, but she was not wolfing it down like her previous food. We kept doing what the manager told us to and had noticed her bowels were still loose. Well, the day that we went straight Iams PA Health Large Breed Puppy Food, our lab puppy acted like that her stomach was cramping and she was acting really strange. We were just keeping an eye on her, thinking she just had a tummy ache. We put her in her cage for the night. In the middle of the night, we heard her crying like she was in pain. When we went to check on her, she was foaming at the mouth and the bottom of her cage was filled with extreme, and I mean extreme diarrhea, and our lab pup's eyes looked like she was in shock. It was the middle of the night, so we took her outside and started giving her water. We stayed up with her through the night and she continued to act really strange and cry like she was in pain.
She finally lay down in the grass and laid there for several hours, not hardly responding when we talked to her. This is, by the way, was totally out of character for her. We just kept forcing the water and trying the whole next day to get her to drink the water. She continued to have diarrhea that day. By evening, it appeared she was done with the diarrhea. The second day, she started to act normal again. So we gave her some of the dog food that we gave her previously and she was fine. I do not know what is wrong with that Iams dog food, but it made our lab pup very, very, very sick. Needless to say, I do not plan on ever buying any Iams products again.

Our two Labrador Retrievers are less than three years old. Both became ill within a day of one another with bloody diarrhea, rapid breathing, excessive drooling, and water drinking. When I took them to the vet, the chocolate lab was going into shock and was not given a very hopeful prognosis. A friend of ours made us aware of a news story about a local couple who suspected Iams food of making their dogs sick.
When we looked it up, we discovered they were feeding the same food that we were--Iams Pro Health Mini Chunks for Large Breed Dogs. We had been feeding this food for over two years, but had just purchased a new bag six days prior form Wal-mart.
The vet placed the dogs on IV therapy and ran numerous blood tests on them to determine organ function and blood levels. They began to respond positively by the end of the day and continued to improve slowly. The vet ruled out cyanide toxicity, rodent poisoning, and soil bacteria. She said that their test results were all exactly the same, and therefore, their illness was caused by something that they were both exposed to. The food seemed like the only logical conclusion that we could draw.
I contacted Iams. They responded with professionalism and concern. They contacted my vet and have asked me for a sample of the food, which I have since sent. They assigned our case to a specialist who stated that they would test for nutritional content. She informed me that they presently do not have any intentions of recalling this food.
I have contacted the Wal-mart store that I purchased the food from. The manager refunded my money and elevated the concern. I have also contacted the local Petsmart and Petco stores alerting them to this situation as well as the animal emergency clinics asking them to report any of these cases to the Iams company.
Please contact the Iams compnay with your complaints and get them samples of your food as quickly as possible, so that they can determine the cause of this widespread illness/death of pets consuming this food. We are thankful that our dogs recovered, but our vet bill exceeded $1500. The Iams customer service assured us that they would take care of the bill if their food was found to be at fault.

We have just had a similar experience with Iams Large Breed Proactive Health dog food in the green bag. We purchased a 48lb. bag from Costco last Sunday. We've been using Iams for over 15 years and have never had any issues. Less than 24 hours after giving our Lab mix girl a bowl of food from the new bag, she had a massive bout of vomiting. She also was drinking a lot of water. The next day, she seemed better and I put her normal amount of food in her bowl. She wouldn't touch it.
I thought I had heard about a dog food recall recently and went to the internet to look. Nothing about Iams dog food, but then I came across this site. Wow! My concern was immediate and I emptied her bowl and cooked up some rice for her. We are now switching her to a prescription formula that her vet wanted her to go on. I filed a complaint with the FDA this morning and am going to complain to Iams as well. I want nothing from them, but they do need to check into what's going on with their food! I agree that everyone in the same situation needs to file complaints, the only way to get to the bottom of this.

She was very hot and she seemed to have some breathing issues but I chalked it up to the heat. After the 4th meal, I hit can with my scoop, pulled it out and saw that it had exploded and looked green. I thought, well thank God it's in a bag. I put it in a zip lock and tossed it.
That night my dogs breathing got worse and she seemed to be having a stroke. She is 16, I have decided that I would allow her to pass gracefully and in essence have a DNR for her. I sat with her while she was in agony, I did not make the connection to the food until 4 am that morning. Needless to say, I took her to vet. I called Iams immediately with bag #, etc. I emailed them and was told I would hear back within 24 hrs. I gave the info to their agent over the phone who had the audacity to tell me the problem was with their cat food not their dog food. Again, I would hear back within 24 - 48 hrs as they needed to talk to my vet.
Weeks later, no one has contacted my vet or me and when I called this AM twice, I got different info. I still need to keep the can in my freezer and the bag in my trunk so no animal will get into it. Help! What is up with this company?

I came across the information about Iams Proactive Mini Chunks (green bag) and Proactive Weight Control (blue bag) through another source. I recently (approximately mid May) started feeding both my dogs Iams brand foods: my Lab Iams Proactive Adult Lamb Meal & Rice Formula and my dachshund Iams Healthy Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice. I have noticed in the past two days that my Lab does not want to eat his food in the mornings, which is very unusual for him. My dachshund hasn't been eating in the mornings either (not too unusual for him). I have not paid much attention to the nature of their stool, but I will now. My Lab has been smacking, licking his jewels a lot in the past couple of days and has been very thirsty. Generally, if there is a problem with the dogs in my household, my Lab starts to show signs of it first as he has a very sensitive stomach and immune system.
I will be returning the remainder of both bags of food to PetSmart today for something else. I urge everyone that is having/has had an issue with this pet food to please, please file a Consumer Complaint with the FDA. Go to the FDA website and click on contact FDA, report a problem, and follow the onscreen instructions. There is a list, by state, of numbers to call for the Consumer Complaint Coordinator in your area. It is imperative that FDA knows about these issues as they are the ones that regulate pet foods. I have only seen one post that talked about contacting the FDA. I think you should go out to that family from Colorado Springs, CO that unfortunately lost one of their beloved. Again, I urge you all to contact FDA and Iams (even though Iams is a big corporation and will not admit to any contamination until they are forced to). Thanks!

I have been out of town and my husband has been calling me asking what to do. He stopped feeding them for 24 hours to see if that would help. I then told him to put them on a bland, rice based, soft dog food. They are getting better. I called IAMS and they asked me several questions and said that we should throw away the food we have and get a new bag. I asked if they had changed their formula by adding any new vitamins or minerals and they said no. They will give me a coupon for a new bag.
I then found a large amount of posts on the web stating that many other dog owners are suffering the same thing during the same period of time. It is concerning to me that there hasn't been a recall if IAMS is getting numerous complaints about the same type of food. Whatever you do, log on to the FDA database and fill out the info for pet foods.
You should be able to find it. Fill it out completely or it will be rejected. Then and only then will the FDA contact you or help you in any way. Iams also asked for a sample; they say they will only test for nutritional content. Hmmm? I don't think that is what's making our dogs sick. Do not stop trying to solve this. This is an update to my May 30, 2010 posting. It's interesting to see a posting mentioning that pet owners should be contacting Iams directly. Many indeed have contacted Iams only to be told the company has not received any reports of pets getting sick, nor is there a problem with the food. In speaking with them myself, I was told there was no problem with the food, but they would be willing to replace it. Food replacement will do nothing to alleviate the suffering of the pet companions, nor will it reimburse the owners who have spent a great deal of money dealing with the sickness; some have had devastating costs. Some are so concerned that they are paying for their own testing of the food at a huge expense after being told by Iams only nutritional tests would be performed on any food sent to them.
In my opinion: The company is playing a waiting game. How many people who have had sickened pets not contacted Iams or used such resources as ConsurmerAffairs.com because they don't realize there's a problem with the food? To those who contacted Iams and were told to send food for testing: did Iams admit there is a problem with the food? Did they say they were going to test for contaminants, or merely for nutritional content as others have been told?

Here's the kicker: This is one day before we leave on vacation. I am not sure the kennel will take them, and I am going to have to scramble to get them to the vet and find a place to board them. I have three dogs, two of which have been eating Iams Mini Chunks in the green bag. I bought a 40 lb. bag at Sam’s a few weeks ago. On Monday night, 14 June, my miniature dachshund started getting sick, vomiting through the night. She became so lethargic. We took her to our vet the next morning. She continued to vomit and started having diarrhea with blood in her stool. They ran many different tests and couldn't find a cause. They gave her IV fluids to rehydrate her and a shot to stop the nausea.
Finally, she started feeling better. The following morning my Lab became sick and started having the same symptoms. I took her to the vet also and they gave her fluids and a shot for nausea. It’s Thursday now and my dachshund is now eating chicken and rice that we cook until she gets back to normal. My Lab is drinking, but still not eating anything. My third dog, a Jack Russell, did not get sick. Immediately, I began to think it was their food because the two that got sick eat the same food, Iams mini chunks. The Jack Russell has been on a special diet since birth. I began researching Iams and came across the numerous complaints on this website. I, like the others with complaints, believe that the Iams food is the cause. I hope a cause can be found.
Iams website does not acknowledge that this is going on. Another case of "big business hiding the truth". My dachshund is better now, but my Lab is still sick and feeling very weak. She does not want to eat anything even though she is very thin now. Our vet bill is $1,211 to date. I'm hoping both dogs get back to normal. The FDA should be alerted and conduct studies to determine the problem. There are too many complaints to not be a real problem. Dogs are getting sick daily and some are dying.

So I added some beef and/or chicken broth to make it taste better which worked for the 12-year old but not the 5-year old, he would not touch it. Both dogs got sick. Got lethargic, vomiting and diarrhea (no blood) and some hallucinations). A couple of days ago I found this site and read everything and stopped feeding Iams to both dogs. The younger one has recovered after 3 days with no issues but the older one was having more issues recovering. Last night I thought she was getting better as she drank some water (threw up most of it but that was an improvement) and ate a couple of slices of turkey lunch meat.
This morning I was woken up by a grand mal seizure. I have seen these before in people but this was the worst and the longest I had ever seen. There is something seriously wrong with this food! I took Shadow to the emergency vet’s office as she was seizing every few minutes (none as bad as the first). She had complete kidney failure and had to be put to sleep. The vet said that the Iams issues were noted on her vet site as the newest "big internet scam" and said it must have been anti-freeze or wet caulk. My dog is named Shadow because she never leaves my side. We have no anti-freeze or caulking around and even if we did, I would have seen her eat/drink it. The only person to take this seriously is Walmart.

My dog has had loose stools for about 3-4 days. She also didn’t want to eat the food and leaves it there which is a new effort by her and highly unusual. After having loose stools and gas for days, she woke up last night while I was sleeping and she pooped all over the house. This is also highly unusual. I have to suspect that something is wrong with the food. I am taking her to the veterinarian today to see what the issue is.

I have two Pug-Chihuahua puppies about 7 months old. I had been feeding them Blue Buffalo--they both liked it and their digestive systems seem to work like clockwork. But it was a lot more expensive than some of the other premium brands. So then I switched to Iam's. They didn't seem to like it as much, but ate it. Then I started noticing a lot of accidents during the night, and it was loose stools or diarrhea. Quit giving them that but bought Eukunuba (didn't realize same company). They were fine on that (seem to like it, no digestive issues), but when I got low on food the other day, I started back with the IAMs. (I know switching is bad, but I tried to mix some of the old with the new). They both have had loose stools/diarrhea again and multiple accidents on carpet. I am done with IAMS and Eukunuba! I will either go back to Blue Buffalo or find something else. Dogs suffered from loose stools/diarrhea and my carpet suffered from the dogs!

My five dogs have been very sick the last few days after I began to mix in some Iams dry food with their regular food. Today, I found out why in the middle of the bag of food there is a rotten, exploded sample can of food that tainted much of the dry food surrounding the can. The can was in a plastic and even that didn’t seal the mess. The bits of food are very dark and stained with the rotting substance and now my poor dogs are puking all over.
I will never ever trust Iams again. Back to Wellness, I have never had any problems with it. I had hoped they would clean up their act after so many pets have died. I have got sick dogs, possible huge vet bills, hamburger and rice to help their tummies, and $40 for the nasty bag of food.

For the last 7 days, on and off, my dog Golden has been lethargic and has had several bloody diarrhea stools--only on my white carpeting of course. I just bought Beneful that I mixed with Iams today--until I read all the comments. Yikes! There may be more problems to come. Two weeks ago, my 10-year old mixed pooch started turning his nose up at his Iams Dry Dog Food (Green Bag). I mix fresh cooked ground beef in with it and at first I thought he was just tired of the hamburger. I switched and cooked up a nice chuck roast for him and he ate all the meat, but once again he ate around the dry. Then he got really sick!
He laid around for 2 days and wouldn't move from his bed, he even refused water! I called his vet and he gave me a stomach/bowel pill and put him on prednisone. There's no way could I get him to the car, he's too big to carry-100lbs. The only thing he would eat were little bites of cheese. It took him 5 days before he would even try food. I cleaned up his runny, mucus-filled dark stool after he moved his bowels.
One behavior I saw him doing that was totally unusual for him was this licking of his lips! I've never seen him do this but I am reading that other dogs had similar symptoms. Thank heavens he pulled through his. My heart goes out to others whose loving pets are suffering.

My dog has experienced almost the same thing as with all the others on here. The only thing that I am not aware of is the blood in his stool. About 3 weeks ago our chocolate Lab stopped eating his Iams dog food. This is not normal for a Lab. He left it sitting in the bowl for over 5 hours and never did touch it. We gave him carrots and he ate them and other biscuits. I had read about Iams previously and knew this must be the problem. We switched foods and he is doing much better and is also not lethargic anymore either and wants to play. I do believe there is something wrong with the Iams (blue bag and green).

I think IAM's dog food was to blame for my dog’s recent illness. I've been feeding my various dogs IAM's for about 30 years and have never had a problem until recently when one of our dogs got real sick. He had started eating a lot of grass a month prior, then last week I found him severely dehydrated, extreme drooling, lethargic, etc. I took him to the vet and they kept him for the night on IV fluids.
When they came in the next morning he had been passing bloody diarrhea, or as the vet said, "It was a blood bath". They sent him to emergency. He continued to go downhill, vomiting and bloody diarrhea (the blood was so bad that the emergency vet staff said that their night cleanup crew was traumatized from all the blood, a joke but it got the point across). I mean it was killing him. He spent 5 days on IV fluids, antibiotics, etc., while they did test after test for what was happening to him. All of the tests came back with no answers. He finally stopped vomiting and passing blood, so they sent him home and had us feed chicken and rice and/of Hill's Prescription I/D dog food. He is doing just fine now.
So Saturday I took all of our dogs on a walk. I noticed our other dog had watery diarrhea (literally brown water) when I took her on our walk. She's also been eating a lot of grass (just as our other dog had done before he got so sick). She's also been losing a lot of weight and just not looking so good. Yesterday, I found a large blob of mucus in our third dog’s stool. She had started to not finish her IAMs when we fed her and now won't eat it at all, even when she's starving. She is usually a real good eater. It cost us almost $5,000.00 to keep our dog alive.

We bought a small bag of the Iams dog food in the green bag and 2 days later, my 2-year old toy poodle was sick with bloody diarrhea streaked with mucous. She has never had any issues with digestive troubles so we were alarmed. I called the vet and they suggested we take her off the food and keep her on a bland diet. I thought maybe she was having problems with dog food switch. So we fed her rice/chicken for a several days to let her "recover". We then decided to mix her old food with the Iams and she began showing small signs of blood. Well today, my son unknowingly fed her Iams alone. Now, she is pooping almost straight blood. There must be something bad wrong with this food.

I've been feeding my 14-year old beagle and 3-year old lab Iams since last October. Everything was fine until we left for our house in Colorado May 2nd. We had about a gallon of left over food to get us to our house. We bought a new bag when we got to Colorado. In about two weeks, the beagle started shunning the Iam's. Being so old, I thought it was just her teeth. We started added warm water and she started eating it again. The lab continued to eat it dry. Then on about May 23rd, the beagle started getting very lethargic. Then she started not eating her food again.
Within two days, she threw up blood and blood was in her stool. The next morning at about 1am, she woke us up crying. When we went upstairs there was blood everywhere from throwing up. We rushed her to emergency pet care. We talked with them and they thought at her age of 14 years, it was probably cancer. She had lived a full life and we always said we wouldn't let her suffer. So, at 4:15am, we put her down. It was so hard after so many years. One week later to the date, the lab quit eating and the afternoon after that he threw up blood a lot! We were going to wait until the next morning to take him to the vet. That night later, he had a bowel movement that was all blood no food. He hadn't eaten in about 2 1/2 days now.
When we got up the next morning, he seemed a little better so we held off on the vet. We were still not connecting the two dogs sickness because of age. That day, I was able to get the lab to eat a dog biscuit but it took awhile. He then ate three more during the day each time very slowly. He still would not touch the Iams. This morning June 3rd, he seemed a lot better after about 3 1/2 days without Iams dog food. Again this morning, he wouldn't touch the Iams. I broke up a dog biscuit in his Iams and he sorted through it and ate only the biscuit. That's when I had an Aha moment. I got some of our cat food and he ate it like he hadn't eaten in a week. Well, he almost hadn't. That's when my wife found all these other reports of the same kind of illness.
We bought Bil-Jac dog food today and this afternoon, he ate it like crazy. I am having testing done by an independent lab tomorrow. I contacted Iams and they acted like they had never heard of this problem. I felt totally insulted. Please don't let your dogs eat this food. It was the Iams in the green back, small chunks. We will see what Iams will do about this. We probably put our beloved Scrapper down last week for nothing. If Iam's would have reported this, it could have been prevented! Do you love your dog? No more Iams!

Both my big dogs became ill with watery diarrhea the day after a new 40-lb bag of Iams dog food, Friday, May 25th from the HEB store in San Marcos, TX. I have been feeding Iams products to my pets for at least 10 years without incident. I didn't think anything about the 1st dog getting diarrhea on Saturday afternoon. I stopped the food and then the 2nd dog had the exact same symptoms on Sunday. All told, there were at least 6-8 pools of diarrhea all over the house. I stopped feeding them for 24 hours and then cooked rice and meat with a little yogurt for 4 days for them. No diarrhea, no bowel movements at all. They seemed fine so I thought it must have been a little "bug" they both had. Last night, I introduced about a cup of the Iams food to each moistened with water and a couple cups of rice. They seemed fine this morning. When I got home this afternoon one of the dogs had filled the bottom of his large crate with diarrhea, chewed out of the crate and covered my house with pools and pools of it. The other dog hadn't gone, but when I let her out, she had very, very loose stools also with massive amounts of mucus. The carpet in the living areas of the house is basically ruined from at least 9 dinner plate sized pools of diarrhea. The dogs do not appear too sick at this time. However, if further symptoms develop later on, they may need medical attention. Both are large 60+ pounds and 6 years old.
There is something wrong with this food. Put out an alert, please, before people's dogs die that aren't experienced to immediately stop feeding them. We just wanted to let you know that we have been feeding our dogs Iams Pro Active Mini Chunks and Puppy Food and all of a sudden they started getting sick. First it was our big dog, Zeppelin. She started with diarrhea and slowly turned to vomiting. I believe it was bloody vomit. Whatever is causing them to do this, it's causing them to eventually vomit nothing but blood. Anyways, our dog Chico started having diarrhea and then we started getting worried, dogs vomiting and massive diarrhea.
Dogs had many accidents with puddles of diarrhea which didn't have much of an odor so it wasn't tough to clean. We're certain it was the blood that is the reason why. Hardwood floors are damaged due to accidents. Dogs have good records so if there's any permanent damage it will be evident when tested. There are many things it could be but our dogs didn't show signs of lethargy or dehydration, or anything that we know to look for in Parvo and other viruses. So before we ran to the vet we thought maybe it was the food and began to research. Go ahead and give it some time and read what people are saying. We instantly went to Albertson's and bought a different brand of dog food.
I hope all your pets are okay and I don't think Iams cat food is healthy either. As you will read in one story, a guy bought his cats Iams and the cats wouldn't even eat it. Please let me know if your animals show these symptoms. Also remember that when a dog vomits (or a human) blood, it doesn't look red like when it comes out of our skin. It is usually a rusty brown color. I hope this saves some animal's life because it most likely just saved ours, or at least a hefty vet bill. Regardless, we are going to keep a close watch on our dogs, because some dogs did live, but need medications for the rest of their lives now. So we are praying there isn't any permanent damage. Peace and Love.

Vomitos toxins and bacteria, that's why the company is not testing for anything but proteins, fats, moisture, etc. If they don't test, they cannot admit guilt. It's the same thing for everyone. It doesn't matter how many call, they say they haven't received any calls. Now they have bought the Natura company that sells the Innova and Innova Evo brands, do not buy them, either! That's what happened to the Eukanuba/Iams products when Procter & Gamble bought them. They have been garbage since and many animals have died in the ten years following and not because of age! I have posted before; I almost lost 15 6 -week babies, 1 5-month old baby and 6 adult dogs! The company told me no one else had called with problems. The female followed two days later. Her liver Alk-phos was over 14,000 (high normal is 150). After weeks of intensive care by me, the male recovered, however, the female's (8 yrs) liver will never recover and she will be on meds for life ($70.00 a month). I contacted Iams and the FDA in mid-April. I also sent sample dog food to an independent lab and am awaiting the results.
Because I am a medically retired critical care nurse, I took over their care at home as soon as I could. I am disabled and cannot physically continue making their dog food. We've already spent nearly $4,000 in vet and medication bills and, unfortunately, I cannot afford to have that bill get much higher. He was a very loved member of our family. I have spoken with Iams many times, they are very condescending. Please call 1-800-525-4267 if you have sick pets from this food. Trying to deal with Iams is very frustrating, because they just do not care. They are a huge corporation, Proctor & Gamble, and it's all about the big bucks. Iams aims to turn it around that it's not there fault, it must be something you, as the consumer & pet owner have done wrong - not them. It is inconceivable that Iams has not even posted anything on their website.
This product might cause death if your pets eat Iams products. Please do not feed your pets Iams. Samples of the Iams dog food have also been sent to an independent lab for testing. My other three Schnauzers are doing fine now, that I am making my own dog food, with a lot of love added.

They are already selling it, making a profit from it, making dogs/cats sick, as well as killing them! They are not testing for toxins, contamination, bacteria, etc. Each piece of food that I picked up had a piece of rodent hair baked into it! My vet viewed it under the microscope and was very dismayed and was happy to hear that all of the pups and adult dogs are responding well to the new food and are well on their way to recovery.
We are now over $11,000 with bills at the vet, medications and $800 for the help into the recovery of the litter of pups at home. The doctors (there were two that I have spoken to) have concurred that it is not the company's issue; that there must be something going on in my home making all of this happen. I have used Iams Mini Chunks before without incident and have successfully transitioned back and forth between it and Eukanuba Maintenance. On 4/3, I poured my dogs remaining Eukanuba chunks into the top of the Iams bag and began feeding the mix to my three Shetland Sheepdogs. A week to 10 days later, I started seeing behavioral changes (lethargy and irritability) then changes in BM schedules. Unfortunately, I did not attempt to examine their BM's, but now believe they were probably becoming runny as they were ingesting higher quantities of the Iams kibble.
During the night of 4/17, all three dogs had diarrhea and the largest (32 lbs) was wrenching. I'm with my dogs 24/7 and have examined the events preceding the diarrhea very carefully and must conclude that there is something in the bag of Iams Mini Chunks I purchased that made the dogs sick. Remarkably, my three dogs consumed measured quantities of kibble based on their size, and the severity of their sickness/diarrhea appeared to be commensurate with their intake. The largest dog was the sickest, the middle sized dog less and the smallest the least. I contacted the Plymouth Meeting PetSmart on the morning of 4/18 to alert them to my concerns. Then I purchased and began feeding my dogs 2 or 3 pieces of Eukanuba Maintenance every 30 minutes or so. Now (4/20), I've returned to their regular AM/PM meal schedule and they appear to be back to their normal behavior but the largest is still irregular. I'm posting because I see others have recently had problems with Iams Mini Chunks and want to add my voice for a recall if this problem is an epidemic.

My 9-year old kitty, 6-year and 4-year old dog have all developed crystals in their urine from eating Iams cat food. We have a third 5-year old dog who is fine only due to her only eating the dog food and never the cats. Two weeks ago my cat was the first to be put to sleep because it was too late to treat. Now both male dogs have the same thing the cat died from but hopefully can be treated. When my cat was put to sleep the vet asked if we fed it Iams because it was known for causing crystals to develop in the bladder and if not seen in time could kill pet. Until I found out the dogs developed it also I believed the death of my kitty was just something that happens in life sometimes. Today I know the vet who put my cat down was hitting the cause of my cat’s death head on with their possibility or personal thought. I lost a close pet costing me $300 to say goodbye. And $1000 plus and still rising for two more close pets with possibility of death.

I started using Iams Dog Food, the green bag, about a month ago. We are currently on our second bag and my APBT started having trouble going to the potty. She had the runs but now she can't go at all. Maybe because she stopped eating. My Yorkie Poo also stopped eating a few days ago, only having a few bites here and there to sustain. I didn't draw the connection to the food until today when I handfed my Yorkie Poo the Iams food because I was concerned since she wasn't eating. As a result, my Yorkie Poo now has diarrhea. I threw out the Iams dog food. Both dogs immediately responded to the new food. They suddenly have their appetite back, hopefully the diarrhea seizes. Only time will tell.

I gradually switched my dog to Iams Lamb & Rice (easily digestible). I noticed the onset of grass eating followed by stomach irritation, finally culminating in diarrhea and vomiting. Vomiting became so severe that it became tainted with blood. Chronic inflammation led to bacterial infection which was treated with antibiotics. My dog made full recovery while on bland diet of boiled rice and turkey. After 1.5 weeks on the bland diet, Iams was slowly reintroduced (since it was not initially suspected as the problem). My dog quickly relapsed; grass-eating, vomiting (blood tainted) and diarrhea.

After feeding and recommending Iams Lamb and rice adult dog food for over 11 years, I'm noticing little things here and there (grass eating a lot, chewing on carpet edges, then throwing it up, chewing at their feet, runny noses, eye discharge). All my dogs have been checked by my vet. Allergy tests were done but there was nothing conclusive. I opened a new bag of food and feed their evening meal now. Two are German Shepherds and one is a Cairn Terrier, All love to eat, but not one would eat their food that night. The next morning, I put chicken gravy on their food and everyone ate. When I came home early afternoon, one of my Shepherds had vomited, By early evening, all of my dogs had gotten sick, One had bloody vomit and diarrhea, They needed charcoal and IV fluid treatment, then a course of antibiotics. Needless to say, I am now preparing their food and big surprise, there is no grass eating, no chewing at their feet, no runny noses, and no eye issues. I have lost all trust in dog food manufacturers. I am monitoring the 7 Year old German Shepherd and the other two at this point.

IAMS Mini Chunks product is a staple that I have fed my three Schnauzers and one Schnauzer Mix over a period of time. They are ages 10, 6, 4 and 3 years, respectively. Two days after opening and feeding from a new bag of IAMS Mini Chunks, my dogs would not eat the food. I assumed the change in the weather from cold to much warmer, and my dogs were just not as hungry. Three of the dogs have had to be hospitalized. One dog was able to come home after treatment from the vet for bacterial infection, causing dehydration and bloody diarrhea. One of the dogs brought home from the hospital yesterday, April 11th, 2010, has to see a kidney specialist and is back in the hospital this morning because of rapid kidney failure.
So far our bill for veterinarian services is over $5,000.00. This is only the beginning. I wouldn't have known anything about IAMS Mini Chunks product being tainted except on the consumer complaint site. Why doesn't the responsibility lay with IAMS to let the consumer know of this contaminated product? Please advise me as to what the next step should be to clear this product from all shelves, notify all pet owners of a bad product, and some retribution for the massive pain and suffering, not to mention expense for treatment, my dogs and family have experienced because of the irresponsibility of the manufacturer of this product.

He started with the puppy formula and ate that fine and I switched to the adult (green bag) and he wouldn't eat it alone so I began mixing it with canned Iams. He was sick frequently and would constantly eat grass until I switched him to the rice and lamb formula (red bag) and he won't eat it alone. There are some times he just won't eat. I am finding more and more info about commercialized dog foods and came to the conclusion that my dog is getting sick from the food that I fed him. I am outraged and feel that this should be taken off the market if there are that many repeated incidents of dog's being sick from this product and some even dying.

As his symptoms worsened he eventually had no fecal matter in his stool at all, it was just pure blood. His vet indicated that Samson had significant levels of bacteria in his system which may have been caused by the dog food. If his symptoms corresponded with beginning a new bag, in which they did. We found several complaints online of people whose dogs exhibited the same symptoms after eating IAMS dog food. We also spoke with friends whose pets were on the same food and they had the same symptoms (although not as severe) as well. You may not reach them immediately but they do call back and take your complaint. I directed the FDA to this website and she saw the pages of similar complaints but acknowledged that no one else had contacted the FDA. She advised that the dog food bag be saved as well as any unused food in case it is needed for checking. I already have a posting on this website as Iams green bag made my Golden Retriever ill after using this product for years prior. I have really sick German Shepherds. I am a breeder and my kennel is controlled. All my dogs became very sick: diarrhea, blood in diarrhea, profuse vomiting, lethargic, not eating as much. Took the dogs to the vet for exam. No worms, no cocideia, no Giardia, etc. Not sure what to think. They all got sick together. Dogs are getting sicker. I can't figure out what is wrong. Then my husband mentioned we had purchased 5 new bags of Iams. Got on the internet. Every dog I own on the new Iams green bag was sick! This is serious. I took them off the Iams put them on special diet from the vet and they all started getting better. Dumped all the Iams out. My vet and I concluded food poisoning from the Iams dog food.
I sent out stool samples to see if it is Salmonella or maybe E. coli. I contacted Iams. I was told they have had no complaints and I must have just gotten a bad bag. Yeah right! 5 bad bags. Then I went on the internet to find out my GSD's have the exact same symptoms as hundreds of other dogs all over the country all in the same time frame. What is going on? It has taken a week for them to get back on track with Science Diet.
I am going after Iams for vet bills, loss of dog food and now I am thinking the huge amount of stress and sickness I have been dealing with for the past two weeks. Yes, we are not crazy. Dogs are getting very sick from this food. Most people just think their dog has a stomach bug or something so hundreds maybe thousands don't report it. Something is wrong. I will never go back to Iams. This is the second time. First time we thought all the dogs had a bug. This time it was much worse. I have no idea why this is not being looked into. I know for a fact, my dogs do not run free and get into anything outside. The only cause: the food.
This resulted to vet bills. I replaced dog food. As I could not allow people to come to my kennel with everyone sick, I lost puppy sales. Two weeks I have had to put clients off. I lost sleep and done tons of extra work as sick 100-lb dogs make a mess in my home and kennel. I have done nothing but clean up vomit and diarrhea for the past couple weeks. It has been hell. Iams has agreed to send me a check for the dog food I lost. They also have offered to pay my vet bill after further review. My friends all say they are offering because they don't want anyone to know or for me to sue them. I don't know what to do at this time. Should I work with Iams and send them the dog food as they want samples? I still have an unopened bag and a full bag of the food I dumped out of their dishes.

On February 28, 2010, my American Bulldog started having frequent bathroom trips outside with diarrhea. Vomiting started that evening. By 6:30am, the next morning, my entire kitchen floor was covered in blood and vomit. He's been on the Iams (green bag) for 6 years and I switched to the (purple bag) last year because my 11 yr old Yorkie had elevated liver enzymes.
The vet couldn't find anything wrong with the American Bulldog but intense gas and swelling in his G.I. tract. The dog was given antibiotics, Pepcid and put on Hamburger/rice diet. He wasn't back to himself for a week. Then, when he was back to normal stool, I put him back on the (purple bag). In 3 days, he was starting to have diarrhea again. I went and got Pedigree dog food and he's back to normal stool and activity.
I won't buy Iams again for any of my dogs. That vet bill was $270 with the potential of $1,000 more of exploratory if I hadn't found this website of information. I have called and informed my vet, as well as my friends in the animal welfare world. Nobody deserves to have this happen to their dear pet family members!

Bought Iams 48 lb. large breed dog food, approx. Feb. 11, 2010. Lucy, my dog is a ravenous eater, second night of feeding from new bag, didn't come looking for dinner (unusual), called her and she did eat. Then drank two big bowls of water, stools were formed but much larger than normal and three times a day (her normal is twice a day), much lighter in color and much larger in diameter, almost puffy looking. By 3rd day, dog was anxious and sometimes frantic looking, eyes very stressed look.
By 6th or 7th day, 2/18/10 -- took her to Vet. He took blood samples and ran tests. That same day, 2/18/10, returned Iams food to Petsmart. They gave me full refund and I also noted sell date on bag of 5/17/11. I bought a small bag of Science Diet to see if dog food change would make a difference. Within hours, she looked better, by 36 hours stools were normal and she was her normal self.
The vet called the following day (2/19/10) with results of blood test -- all normal except for liver function a bit elevated and he said that could be from a bed diet. Said if she wasn't better on new food to call back but the unbelievable difference to the upside after I stopped feeding her the Iams (within 12 hours better, 24 hours much better, 36 hours completely normal). I called Iams to tell them they had a problem, they had Jennifer of Vet services call me back. I was dismissed because I didn't have a sample of the food.
The pull date meant nothing. I had given them the Vets name, they did not call him. They said, I needed to keep a sample. At the time, I thought the pull date would be enough. Also, it seems to me Petsmart (where I purchased the Iams ) would have kept a sample when I returned it, telling them it had made my dog very sick. As I told Jennifer, I got a refund on the dog food but buying their dog food cost me $162 for blood tests and vet visit. I mentioned to the vet reading this site but that didn't register with them.
With so many specific complaints about this freakin' food, why doesn't P&G do something about this? After the previous recalls, you'd think the company would. Well, Iams was always my preferred food choice for my pets. I first heard of the brand 17 years ago when I adopted a cat from a shelter and the animals there ate Iams. (This was back in the days when Iams was only distributed and sold through vets and limited stores like Petco and PetsMart in areas that had those stores. I think it was also pre-P&G's ownership.) I will no longer be buying Iams pet food because of this issue. My dog got very sick, was taken to an emergency vet on Sun. morning, given a drug, and we're hoping he's on the mend. We took him off of Iams dry food and fed him chicken and rice for two weeks, which rectified the problem. Yesterday, we put him back on Iams and today he is extremely ill once again. We have had several carpets, floor spaces, clothing items, and family events ruined because of this. I am also gravely concerned about the health of my dog this evening, as he is vomiting and defecating profusely.

I use the IAMS Orange Bag Cat Food and I have not had any problems and I have been using IAMS Cat Food for 14 years now. Has anyone else out there had any problems with the IAMS Cat Food Orange Bag? I had a person stop me at Walmart because I mix my IAMS with Cat Chow or I used to. She stopped me because she's seen a 16lb bag of Cat Chow Cat Food in my cart and told me 3 of her cats died from Cat Chow and it was confirmed after numerous test were done by her vet. Be careful out there if you use Cat Chow. I know I don't want to take any chances of my cats dying; they are part of my family!

I cannot believe what I am reading on this site. I too have been feeding my Australian shepherd Iams mini chunks (green bag), and after 4 weeks of diarrhea, vomiting, and continued loose stools; two trips to the emergency hospital with multiple tests done on my poor little guy and everything coming back negative; having him on chicken, hamburger, rice, and removing all treats; and yesterday finally a stool that was starting to form. He ate a few pieces of mini chunks and it started all over again.
I called Iams today and spoke with Sharon. She stated they did change the recipe and added there have been no complaints and offered to refund my money. I don't want my money. I want my dog to be well and all the other dogs that this may happen to. I gave Sharon the bag number. Please, please investigate this right away. I will be happy to provide whatever is needed to get this off the shelves.

I took my 8-month-old St. Bernard to the vet yesterday morning because she had diarrhea and no energy at all. She was very sick and they kept her overnight with an IV. I picked her up this morning and she was doing much better. Later in the afternoon, she had some Iams Proactive Large Breed and just wanted to lay around again. So I am convinced that it was the Iams and will not feed it to her ever again.

I have a 10-month old Havanese mix puppy and have been feeding her Iams ProActive Puppy since I got her. The breeder recommended it at the time. Last weekend, I kept my daughter's Terrier mix and fed both dogs from a new bag of food that I had purchased at Walmart. I spent the entire weekend cleaning up after them. Normally, my daughter's dog is very well potty trained. I awoke on Saturday morning to a living room full of ** and vomit. Both dogs were throwing up and had severe diarrhea. I thought at first that it may have been viral, but when my daughter's dog went home, he got better for a few days. Then she got a new bag of Iams adult food from Walmart. Her dog immediately got sick again.
I got online and started researching the food and found that others are having the same issues. I immediately went to the pet store and bought an organic dog food. Both dogs immediately got better. I sent Iams an email and they said they had not had any reports of problems with the food. I even sent a link to this site to show that they have had recent problems with the food. Within 24 hours, both dogs had excessive diarrhea; one even became a bit lethargic. Thank God on Monday, I was able to supply them with their normal brand of feed and so far, they both seem to be doing a lot better. Product Code: AU 0800 738 546NZ.
At this point, no dog has been vetted, hence, they both ate approximately 2 meals on the Iams formula. Thank God I was able to switch them back to their normal diet in time.

I have been feeding my puppy Nutro Max Puppy since we got her in January. Recently, I received a coupon for Iams Proactive Health Puppy and thought I'd give it a try. It has been one week since I started her on it. Two days ago, I went to let her out of her crate and found a bunch of runny poop all over. I thought it was just a tummy bug, so I called the vet. She said to put her on a bland diet for the rest of the day. The rest of the day, she seemed to be fine. So the next day, I gave her Iams again.
Well, today, once again, there was runny poop all over in her crate! This just seemed so strange for her, because she has been house- and crate-trained since she was two months old. She also does not like her crate messy. So I know she would not poop in there unless something was bothering her. Then I decided to look online to see if there was anything about this Iams dog food, and I found all your stories. I hope we can all get this figured out before this company kills our pets.

I recently purchased a bag of Iams Adult +1 year for my two dogs. The bag was purchased June 14th. Since then, my dogs have exhibited runny eyes, horrible body odor, lethargy and horrible diarrhea. They have both had accidents in my house, something that they never do. After reading the flood of responses about this dog food, I am disgusted that this dog food has not been recalled!
My dog's health has been horribly affected by this dog food. Monetarily, we may have to pay for carpet replacement when we move off base next year. That could cost us up to five thousand dollars. If my dog's health doesn't improve, the vet bills would also be included. Thankfully, I caught this early enough that I think I can feed them better food and make them healthy again.

I had 3 cats that I had been feeding Iams dry food for years; lately, as in the last 4 months, the orange bag. Since January my oldest cat, a 15-yr-old developed runny diarrhea but did not act sick. He always had impeccable litter box habits. I had him thoroughly checked by my vet who could find nothing wrong. He did not appear sick but yes, did appear to be losing some weight.
One day I just found him laying dead on the floor. I had him to the vet over and over but they couldn`t find anything wrong. Now one of the other cats, a 2-yr-old Bengal has developed a strange twitching in his back that makes him pull his hair out and run like mad for no reason. Off to the vet again. They suggested a food allergy and I have switched my 2 remaining cats to Natural Balance Duck and Pea.
Well I made the switch over a week's time and today they have been eating the new food only for 2 days. I am seeing a marked improvement in the Bengals behavior. He is much less manic and frantic and isn't trying to pull his hair out anymore. I wrote to Iams last week to ask them if something had changed in their food recently and they sent me and email back saying they are very concerned and want me to call them.
I am going to call them but am giving the food switch a few more days so I can let them know as soon as I quit feeding their food, everything improved. Too bad I didn't know sooner as my 15-yr-old, always healthy cat, would probably still be around. I think something is going on and I believe the big companies know about it but aren't doing anything just yet, maybe hoping the problem will go away.

The last several days she has had diarrhea all over the house. She is up to date on all shots and has been very healthy until I opened that new bag of dog food.
I was suspicious of the food because that is pretty much all she has ingested to cause such a problem, and she is an indoor dog that doesn't have as easy access to catching other viral and bacterial things. I decided to do some online looking about diarrhea in dogs and came across this website and read all the stories that are identical to mine, not to mention the time frame of all of these, I don't feel these are a coincidence, I know it's the IAMS!

She went on antibiotic and died within 2 weeks. The vet said it was highly unlikely that she would die from Lymes disease, some other infection might have been there we didn’t detect. The second dog couldn’t stand up. We took her to the vet and she tested negative for Lymes disease. The third dog, the very next day was unable to get her rear off the floor. I took her to the vet. The vet said it is nearly impossible for all of them to have Lymes disease. They are running blood test, so far it shows no infection. He told me to save the dog food in the freezer and the bag. We have a black Lab mix that has been on Iams dry dog food all his life of 11 years. On March 12th, 2009, the dog was trembling and lying around. He had no interest in normal activities and his appetite was reduced. He was vomiting after eating. We took him to the emergency vet in Wisconsin. They felt that he needed an MRI and we were referred to an animal emergency hospital in Illinois. On March 13th, we took him there. We had to leave him there for 3 days while they did multiple tests and put him on intravenous liquids. An X-ray was done and we were told he had a mass in his stomach, which led to an ultrasound only to find nothing.
We took him home and started feeding him Iams canned food instead of his normal dry Iams food. He seemed to be doing better, so we weaned him off the canned food and put him back on his dry Iams food. Then on May 3rd, we had to take him back to the emergency vet. Again blood tests, urine tests, intravenous liquids, ultrasound and X-rays were done. All the tests came out good. So on the 4th of May, we took him home and started him on homemade meal of chicken and rice for about 1 week. Then we integrated Eukanuba for sensitive stomachs and he has been doing well so far.
We believe that the Iams food was bad and caused the problem. His energy has increased and he seems to be getting back to his normal self. All this cost in excess of $2,000. I wish we still had the bag from his dry dog food so I could have given you the lot number. We will preserve some in case Iams wants to test it; the rest is going in the garbage. I wish I had done research sooner and found this website with others that had similar issues; maybe our dog wouldn't have had to endure the pain and suffering. I have a 2-year-old lab mix. Since she was a puppy, I fed her the Beneful dog food and didn't really have any problems except that she was having more stool than necessary, which told me that the food must have had a lot of fillers in it. So, after consulting with a friend who used to work for a vet, I was informed that her vet recommended Iams Dog Food as the best choice for dogs that was in my price range because it was all natural and used no fillers. I switched my dog's food to Iams Mini Chunks and everything was great for about a year.
However, about two months ago, my dog started vomiting daily and having diarrhea (severe diarrhea, I might add) and was having to go outside every couple of hours. I thought maybe it was just a touch of gastroenteritis and that it would go away on its own, but I had the vet check her out anyway. She said she could find nothing and that it was probably just a bug that would clear up soon. That was more than two months ago now, and my dog is still having severe diarrhea, runny to the point that it's just liquid pouring from her poor little body. She's still active, but she also vomits still on occasion, usually every other day, even when there's not much in her stomach, and it just looks like yellow bile.
I am thinking that Iams is to blame for this. I have tried the process of elimination to solve this problem or at least to pinpoint the underlying issue, only to find that all signs point to her food. I cut out her treats, which didn't help. I tried keeping food from her for 24 hours to let the bug run its course, and that didn't help. I even gave her Imodium for her bowel problems, and though it helped for a bit, the diarrhea persisted after the medicine was out of her system.
Has anyone else had this problem?! I'm irate with Iams Dog Food Company right now and have heard horror stories lately about pets dying unexplained deaths, all of whom were being fed Iams products! I can't afford any really expensive brands of dog food, but I would at least expect even the lower brands to be satisfactory and not cause my dog to have gastrointestinal issues so severe that she has to go outside hourly! This is ridiculous! Iams owes its customers some serious apologies and compensation, and to my knowledge, they have yet to even do a recall on their inadequate (to put it lightly) products!

Our two male three-year-old Siamese cats, litter mates have eaten Iams cat food since they were kittens. We started them out on the dry kitten food and then on to the Adult Hairball/Proactive Health. Last Dec., our local store started displaying not an orange bag but, a pink one stating the product had been improved. Both cats started throwing up the same day they were given this food. This continued over a few days and I stopped feeding them from that bag and tracked down another bag of the same food only in the original orange bag. There were no problems.
We went through the same thing again in January having to settle for the pink bag over the orange and again, they immediately started to throw up until we tracked down an orange bag. In Feb., one of the cats was getting a little chunky so the vet suggested we switch to a weight control food. We switched to Iams Weight Control with Hairball in the blue bag and again the cats are both throwing up even after slowly introducing them to the new product which states it is new and improved. I am getting very skeptical about feeding them Iams now in general and am looking to switch to something else.
We had in the past fed our previous cats Purina products and decided to go with a higher grade food which we thought would benefit the cats and possibly give them less health issues in the long run but throwing out $14 bags of cat food is not in our budget, let alone the stress it places on the cats. Hi my one year old Yorkie threw up a very hard black piece of plastic. We rushed him to the vet as he became sick. The vet asked us to take him to the meregency room if he threw up again. At night he did so we rushed him to the emergency hospital. We were at first not sure what the piece of plastic was and then realized the same piece of plastic was in his food.
My yorkie had to be hospitilized the whole day and we spend ~ 900 $ on his care. He is back at home now but the doctors cant say if he is 100% ok ..

death to a 12 yr. old cat (vet backup) testing of the 2 surviving cats resulting in an expense of approx. $500.00 I have vet back up and cat foods recall can numbers varified by pet store. I also was in contact with the Ohio FDA, but they are unable to help me get in contact with an attorney for pet owners in regard to the class action suit against Menu Foods. If you would be so kind as to send me contact information, I would greatly appreciate it.

My cat has been eating IAMS Dry Original Cat Food & has become ill with Kidney problems. IAMS said they are not responsible & that that dry food has not been recalled. I have spent close to $700.00 in vet bills. Now he is eating Royal Canin, but they are recalling it too... The cat has been extremely ill & is starting to show symptoms again, which only means more vet bills, that I cannot afford. He has to be checked every 2 weeks.

He was there for 5 days. the next week he was not any better and I drove him to the vet every day for 5 days to receive sub-Q fluids.

I am busy compiling all my facts and receipts and evidence for compensation from Menu Foods ... My cat Maggie was affected by Menu Foods through Iams, Science Diet, Eukanuba food. She began her quest for water about 2 weeks ago maybe more and I became quite alarmed when I noticed she could never seem to get enough water (the cute factor wore off when she wanted water from the tub and sink 24/7 not to mention she has 2 water bowls in the house ... when I realized there was far too much urine for 1 cat in the litter box. I called my vet and was told to bring her up there that evening 3/27 for blood to be drawn and evaluated by an outside lab.
I waited for the call with the results which came on Thursday 3/29. I was told they needed to see her ASAP because they found kidney stuff going on with her - enough to alarm them as well as me. She needed to begin fluid therapy and have more tests run to determine the extent of the damage and the effectiveness of the fluid therapy. I hope the fluid therapy will resolve the problem ... by flushing the toxins out of her kidneys and body. That is the whole purpose of the therapy at this point. The initial blood test cost me $115.50 and I can only imagine the cost of this ... I have contacted Menu Foods and logged my complaint along with the hundreds maybe thousand of others. I fully expect to be reimbursed for my vet bills and will join in the class action suit against Menu Foods.
I am carefully documenting all necessary bills, proof of cat food bought at Petco and PetSmart. They are sending me receipts and documentation of my cat food purchases. Poor Maggie ... I feel bad for her and I know she is scared to death right now ... My point is how can someone possibly be expected to save cat food cans once they have fed their cats ... for maybe some day there will be problems with the food?? I do not have any of the cans BUT I am doing ny best to get a history of my purchses from PETCO.

My beloved cat Winston was diagnosed with acute renal failure in December after we took him to the vet for thirst, weight loss and lethargy. he spent 5 days in the veterinary hospital on IVF. After we took him home, we administered sub-Q injections every night for 3 weeks until he could take no more and we put him to sleep. He suffered so much. I fed Winston Iams ocean fish in sauce, Stop and Shop companion and fancy feast turkey, beef and chicken in gravy. I thought I was feeding my sweet loving cat, nutritious foods that he liked; I was instead, poisoning my baby with products sold by manufacturers whom I trusted.

My border collie mix was desperately ill after eating IAMS Select Bites foil pouches for cats. She loved cat food but was not allowed to have it. I gave the cat the food but he refused to eat it so I gave it to the dog as a treat she never gets. The following day I tried the food again with the cat but again he would not eat it so again I gave it to the dog. I had no idea that I thought the food was a treat for my dog was actually poison. She became very listless, and was very very ill. We took her to the vet and he stated that she was in severe kidney failure. He gave her some medicine but nothing seems to help. She was dying.
I watched her for several days deteoriate from the vibrant, happy dog she was to not being able to walk. We gave her children's Pedialite to try and at least hydrate her a little and children's Ensure for some much needed nourishment. She could keep nothing down. Our next trip to the vet was to put her down. It was the most horriffic thing we as a family had to do. She was a much loved companion. A loyal friend, and part of this family. I have those pouches of food, and they are definately in the recall.

A very healty and vibrant 9 year old shelty went from active and lovingly barky to silent. He stopped eating, could not jump up to his rocking chair, was uninterested even in Cheeze-Whiz . . . a favored at-a-boy treat and pill delivery system for years, and generally lost interest in life. He was fed twice out of Iams canned foods: approx March 16 and March 18, 2007. chicken & gravy, beef and gravey! We have consulted with a veterinarian Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week. This afternoon his heart rate exceeded 240 bpm. What is happening? We are rapidly loosing a huge part of our lives.

I have a dog named Rusty. I have always fed him IAMS Dog Food. Rusty is 7 years old, Golden retriever mixed that has been in perfect health. All of the sudden 2 weeks ago he became very ill. I took him to a dog emergency clinic and spend over 300.00 dollars to find out that he has developed kigney and liver problems. He has been in medication since that cost for medication is very expensive. This week Rusty is back at the vet and has been there and will not be able to go home (hopefully) until April 2nd- next week. I can only imagine what the cost is going to be this time. He is not doing too well. I am sick and suffering terribly for poisoning my loved dog with his food, feeding IAMS.

My cat has always been a bit on the small side and I usually only feed him Iams Dry Senior food.. I get him wet food only once in a while as a treat.. I had bought a couple of 12 packs of the Iams Wet food pouches (the orange containers) food in December or January and just fed him one a day for about 2 or 3 weeks... because he had been on the skinny side and I was trying to fatten him up.... I didn't notice him drinking any more water.. but I did start to notice him looking skinnier and he was starting to vomit ever few days..
I figured it was because he is not used to the wet food... so I stopped it. He started to lose more weight...and still periodically vomit. so I took him to the vet about a month ago and the Doc said Kidney Disease was the primary issue but he might have an underlying condition. We treated the kidney desease and he seems to be recovered (thank goodness) but that cost about 700 to 1000 dollars.
By then I had already thrown away the boxes of food and he reciepts... Menu foods website only says there will be compensation if you have proof that the cat ate the food so what is someone like me to do, who already had a sick cat but was made worse by the product but can't prove it..

I don't know if this is related, but now I wonder... I had two cats, one 16, one 7 years old. I have fed them IAMS Dry Weight Control Formula for many years. In June of 2006, the 16 year old suddenly decided to kill the 7 year old. She had been losing weight, but I just figured this was normal aging. (Mind you, they had been in the same house since the young one was 8 weeks old.) I took her to the vet, they declared hyperthyroid condition. At her age and condition, I decided to let nature take its course until euthanasia was her best option. In December, the time came, she started not being able to eat without throwing up. 12/28 I had to put her to sleep, one of the harder things I have ever had to experience in life. Now I fear for my older cat...but with such a gigantic list of potentially poisoned foods, what do I feed him? What if the damage is done?

I purchased the dog food on recall and was feeding it to my 8 month old wolf/sheppard when he suddenly became ill on christmas day. He was in convulsions and could not walk. The night before he was running and playing on video camera, then christmas morning after he had his breakfeast he had a seizure and could not stand up at all. We rushed him to a vet who didnt know what happened. He saw 4 specialists and he still does not have full use of his one hind leg -- it drags and is raw and sore from this. This is a 8 month old puppy that was checked by a vet when we first got him and got a perfect physical!!
