Last year bought a bag of Beneful chicken dry food. Got home open the bag and it was full of maggots and flies. Called Purina to complain. I was told to bring back to where I had purchased it and they blamed the retail store of course. So I continued to purchase that same food somewhere else. In the mean time received coupons from Purina to compensate for that bag. While eating that food our dog was having little spasms like shaking his head and almost like having seizures. We brought him to the vet and was told maybe he had ear infection and prescribed antibiotics. Then received e-mail from a friend about Beneful so stop him completely from eating Beneful. Hopefully we did in TIME!

Our dog Ares who is a staffy has been violently ill in and out of hospital - vomiting, white gums, lethargic, trouble standing, glazed eyes, losing lots of hair, loss of appetite for 2 weeks now....He has had X-rays and blood tests, been on drips, in and out of hospital and nothing. He is getting worse. We heard of the issues with Beneful and unfortunately that is what he was eating. The food was thrown out Tuesday and 5 days later he is getting worse. The vet has not been able to help and we are desperate as he is getting worse. I'm researching as much as I can about dogs being sick in Australia and any cures, but no luck so far. It is not looking good. We are all beside ourselves. I'm trying to find out any medication that may help him before it is too late.

I did not know how sick food that should be good would make my poor dog so sick. I thought I was buying good food, not some cheap no name brand. Then my poor baby started throwing up everywhere and could barely stand. My kids were scared and thought their dog was dying in front of them. I had to rush him to the vet/animal hospital. By then, he was also turning yellow. The vet ran several tests on him and said he was having liver failure and would have to stay until he was better. 7 days later and hundreds of dollars out of my pocket then vet flushed his body out of the poisonous toxins from the food. SHAME on you PURINA/ BENEFUL.

We were feeding my English bulldog Daisy Beneful for a while after we had her to the vet who suggested Beneful healthy weight, which we started feeding to our beloved dog Daisy. But she was having seizures on and off. She was drinking a lot more water and was not herself. Well on Feb 20, 2015 I got a call from my husband at work crying, "You must come home. Daisy is foaming at the mouth and having really bad seizures," and she never came home. The vet told us she was too far gone to bounce back. We had to do the hardest thing ever. We had to put her down.

I fed my dog Beneful and he started losing his hair. His nails started cracking and he was sick all of the time. This went on for almost a year. After multiple trips to the vet we decided to change dog food brands. He is doing so much better. His nails are healthy, he had more energy and his hair grew back! He is 5 and only ate Beneful for a little over a year. This dog food should be taken off the shelves!

As soon as I change dog food, the problem stopped! Now they aren't as lethargic and have energy back again. BENEFUL IS CRAP AND DANGEROUS.

He was 11 years old so yes for a husky, getting up there in age. We have fed him Beneful for the last 5 years and to have this problem come out of the blue just blows me away. What is Beneful doing now that they weren't doing a few years ago? Seeing all your stories is heartbreaking and I wish you all the best. I as well will no longer be feeding my 2 remaining Huskies Any Purina Product... Any advice on a better food? I hear Iams is having bad reviews also...

Our dog has eaten Beneful dog food for some time now. Recently she got a bacterial infection and had to take three weeks of antibiotics and a steroid for itching. Then I read about Beneful on Facebook and we were wondering if this is where it came from because there was no other explanation as to why she got this. The vet said that sometimes older dogs get sick. Now I wonder.

We had a 3mo old Rhodesian Ridgeback and we thought we were purchasing good quality puppy chow. The package says it's for "Puppies" and claims to be a good source of protein and vegetables to support growth. It seems fine, but I noticed after a week or so, our puppy was constantly itching and biting herself attempting to scratch her itchy skin. A few more days passed and she started shaking her head and trying to scratch her ears, at which point I suspected an ear infection.
We took her to the vet and he confirmed that she did, indeed, have an ear infection. He also commented on the fact that he has a Rhodesian Ridgeback and asked what kind of food we were feeding her. He immediately said to stop feeding her the Purina because of all the illnesses and deaths associated with it. If it wasn't for our vet, our puppy could have been seriously ill. We've since then, switched foods and no longer see her itching or have any more ear problems.

We had our dog on Beneful from age 2-6 battling severe pancreatitis and skin infections along the way. At age 6 were told she had extremely high liver enzymes and an ultrasound showed not only an enlarged liver but that it had damage. We've been battling with liver disease, severe pancreatitis, diabetes, skin infections, ear, infections, eye infections amongst TONS of other issues incurring HUGE vet bills. She's now been on a cooked diet which has resolved a significant amount of the issues and she's been doing much better considering, but the residual effects are VERY apparent. I'd be interested to make this story known if only to warn others and make sure food like this is taken off the shelves.

I have two Queensland heelers and a senior lab chow. I switched from pedigree dog food to Beneful approximately five months ago. I have noticed them vomiting after eating. My one heeler she's seven years old now, has a hotspot on her front left paw and she has two tumors on her upper chest and one on her nose that were diagnosed two months ago. I recently switched back to Pedigree dog food and the vomiting has subsided. The tumors are still present. I feel they should have to compensate for damage they have caused and any further health care they may need.

Our 7-year-old blue Heeler went through some severe changes rapidly with her hair falling out, sores, kidney failure, dehydration, vomiting and lethargic behavior to the point our vet recommended we put her down. She was on a strict Beneful diet. I'm very sad and at the time, we wondered how all this could have happened so fast when she had been very healthy a few weeks prior. The thought that she could have been sickened from her food is horrific. She was our first pet and only child for 5 years.

Mr. Rex is DEAD after eating Beneful. It was just extremely sudden. Every organ was very very healthy. He, too, had a mass that was encapsulated. But his kidneys were shutting down. The last food he was eating was Beneful. I saved the bag and the rest of the food, because I believed it was the food that caused this horror. It was excessive drinking and going. I actually spanked him for going on the floor - something he had never done. If I had only known. The kidneys were even healthy looking. The vet believed Rex must have gotten into 'something'. He deteriorated despite three days of IV's. I then took him to the Emergency Clinic for further treatment - and everything just shut down.
Note: According to the vet, he had a very healthy heart, lungs and everything. He even had a sonogram. The levels for his kidneys were 'off the charts'. We did EVERYTHING. I am sick. He was a young dog. He didn't get into anything else. I knew it was the Beneful. By the time they get sick, though - obviously the poison is too much for their systems. Yes, I too, wish to be involved in a class action suit. Purina needs to be punished.

Yesterday, my baby boy Harley was playing like he often did, then he laid down and passed away. It broke my heart. I couldn't stay in my own home last night. My baby was a healthy, playful member of our family and now he's gone. When we switched dog foods, Toby, our other dog, stopped throwing up. I'd really like for someone to contact me concerning this matter. Do you know how hard it is to explain to a 3-year-old that was here and watched Harley being covered with a towel what happened? This food is tainted and killing loved members of families.

Finally have answers. Start off, I've used Purina dog chow for years with my 3 year old pit bull, was a healthy happy dog. I changed over to benemulate in early 2013. In the summer of 2013, I noticed my boy was losing weight & peeing all over the house. When I could get him to pee outside he'd cry when he peed & it smelled terrible, so we took him to 2 different vets - blood tests, pumped his stomach, steroids. They couldn't find what was causes ALL his problems. They keep calling him the puzzle case. They put his case online so other vets could know what was wrong. After him standing with his head up against walls, vomiting, diarrhea, yellow eyes, lethargic for weeks on end, took him to the vet about a dozen times. Nothing helped him. They asked if I gave him the foreign treats, what dog food, all that. Never once thought it was the food.
We lost our best friends in my bathroom on the floor 2 weeks before Christmas!! He was my daughter's dog! She was heartbroken. A year & half later, I read a post on Facebook about Beneful dog food. I had a 11 yr old Beagle who died Dec 15, 2015 who ate Beneful for over 5 yrs. Over the past few years out of no where my dog would develop really bad cases of diarrhea, at which time I would change her diet to baby meat with rice mixed in. October 2015 my dog had surgery on her leg, and two weeks after surgery her fur starting falling out in clumps, the vet said it could be a result of the surgery and stress due to the cone she needed to wear. From that point on she keep getting worse she was losing weight, 10% of her body weight in less than a month, our vet drew blood and she had become anemic.
Back to the vet she is not eating. Started boiling chicken for her and also at this she has started drinking a lot of water another blood test. By December she started collapsing back to the vet December 12th, my poor dog's gum are white and more blood work, she isn't producing red blood cells, the vets believe she has internal bleeding and/or a liver problem. My poor Jessie is put on medication and by Monday Dec. 15th she is dead. Today while on the internet I see that there is a class action case against Purina Beneful. I continued reading, my dog had the same symptoms as the dogs that died, and she ate Beneful. I can only hope that Purina a name I trusted didn't KILL my poor dog by selling me dog food that poisoned her.

My dog, Sandy is a Golden Retriever Mix and has been eating Beneful dog food for about a year. Sandy is five years old and was abused by her former owner when she was young. She had her first seizure around the beginning of January and her second and third were on the same day, in about the middle of February. Afterwards I have been noticing yellow stains on the floor. I know it is not urine because this is normally what her vomit looks like. She has peed on the floor a few times since the seizures, as well as vomiting. She has also been seeming a bit skittish and miserable-looking and has had diarrhea a few times.
We have taken her to the vet but all we got from them was a few seizure prescription pills. We asked the vet if they knew anything about the Beneful problem and they apparently haven't heard anything about it. I had a two year old doberman/shepherd mix. He just recently passed away. We fed him Beneful the whole time. Max our dog began showing signs of illness such as excessive thirst, lethargic, nausea, and cough. After a few days of this we took him to the vet where they put him on antibiotics for what they thought may be an infection as well he was on prednisone and a diuretic due to an excessive amount of fluid on his lungs. After bringing him home, he continued to eat Beneful food and continued to get sicker. We took him back to the vet where they had to give him iv and another stronger antibiotic. He continued with all the same symptoms with no signs of getting better.
Finally we decided to switch his food to fresh dog food suggested by our vet and he began to show signs of improvement. We thought he may get over this but sadly succumbed to his illness and passed away in my arms. The vet said his organs had shut down. After researching and discussing this with the vet we have realized it was caused from Beneful food. We lost our fur baby due to contaminated high toxin food and didn't realize when we were feeding our baby we were actually poisoning him with Beneful. This food needs to be removed from all markets and Beneful needs to be held responsible for the many illnesses and deaths they have caused.

We now pay the $120 for the 7kg bag of biscuits and $45 for his wet food regardless of our other bills and commitments as his life now depends upon it. He is a 60kg dog so it works out very expensive. I am beside myself at finding out this food is causing such damage and deaths to our beloved pets. SHAME ON THIS COMPANY!!!!

Our dog has been eating Purina Beneful dog food for about a year now. He has been healthy playful and energetic. Running low on dog food we bought a new bag of Beneful and our dog just wouldn't eat it. The color of the new dog food was dull looking and didn't smell the same as the old bag so thinking there may be something wrong with it we discarded it and bought another new bag of Beneful which looked good like the old bag. Our dog began eating again and everything seemed back to normal until just recently when we bought a new bag of Beneful again.
It looked and smelled ok but we had a difficult time getting him to eat it. We started mixing a small amount of Campbell's Beef Stew in with the Beneful and he began eating again but within a few days he began to throw up, slobbering from the corner of his mouth, (he has never done that before), his eyes became glazed, he stopped playing and his breathing became labored and he laid around and slept most of the time. After doing some research we found the stories of Beneful Killing dogs and stopped feeding him the Beneful immediately.
Doing more research my wife started feeding him cooked rice mixed in with cooked ground beef (no Beneful or any other dog food). Within 2 days he was feeling much better. He had a better look in his eyes, he was up playing with his tennis ball this morning, and his breathing is much better. We do hope that we caught it in time and he will make a complete recovery but so far we are very pleased with his progress. DO NOT BUY PURINA BRAND DOG FOODS. They are killing dogs everywhere. We just hope ours is not one of them.

I purchase this food for my German shepherd. She became very sick...lost weight. I called my vet and was told all i could do was coax her to eat by feeding her whatever i could get her to eat. I seen an ad that said they was a recall on the food due to it having metal shavings in it. I took a bowl out of the bag and run a magnet thru it and it was covered in shavings. I call the company and they ask me to send them what I had left. They even sent me a prepaid box. Guess what ...that was over 6 months ago and i still have yet to hear from them. So I told everyone i know not to feed this to their dogs. Happy to report my shepherd is ok. Took two weeks of eating table food to get it all out of her system. Would never use this food again. I took him to another vet when he had blood in urine and vomiting. The vet took blood from his swollen stomach and operated on him to find his liver was pus. Larry died on the operating table. He was only 8 years old. Way too young for a kelpie to die. My husband forked out thousands and we cried forever this year. I would like to see justice done to the food company. The end of January 2015 the 2nd was was sick with same symptoms as the first, costing $740.00, and now on February 10, 2015 took our lab to the vet with the same symptoms, cost $900.00, and by the end of the day we had to make a decision, we ended up having to put our lab down. Each vet said this is due to the food they ate within a 24 hr. period. Each dog started with stop eating, vomiting, dehydration, & blood diarrhea. Our beautiful, healthy seven-year old Shiba Inu became extremely sick, with vomiting and refusal to eat. We eliminated items one by one from her diet, but let her keep eating the Beneful veggie-shaped treats she has enjoyed since she was a puppy. At our vet's recommendation we finally put her on a diet of boiled chicken and rice, which seemed to help immensely. It was only after she ran out of Beneful treats that the digestive trouble completely stopped. We thought it was a coincidence until our local store said they would not be carrying Beneful in the future! Aha! Now that she is eating only her boiled chicken and rice with no Beneful veggie-shaped treats, she is fine! After 3 days at the vet with IVs I brought Maggie home. A friend suggested I research Beneful online. I am shocked to find out there are many other dogs who got sick with the exact same symptoms after eating Beneful. My vet never mentions the dog food could be the problem. Currently looking for a lab to test the food for heavy metal content or other poisons. I am not sure the food is the cause of Maggie's liver failure but I do intend to find out, especially if the Lepto test comes back negative.

The smaller dog the JR started with excessive thirst and urination, some vomiting and then including diarrhea at the end. We thought she was gaining weight with canned food and packaged foods yet we kept giving Beneful too in our ignorance of the issues. The larger dog doesn't show such symptoms, a Shepherd mix dog, both dogs we had for years without problems. Going by the posts and our dogs symptoms, kidney and liver failure was surmised. January 16th I took him back to the vet because he still had diarrhea, was weak and walking sideways. They added another antibiotic and some bland canned dog food. I have a small Chihuahua/terrier since she was a born. She is now 5 years old and I only feed her Beneful until about 3 months ago. My dog initially started with a skin irritation but I didn't think nothing of until it got worse..when I feed my dog she would start to growl and bark her leg while eating. It got to a point where she would literally go crazy while eating her food.
This progressed and finally she was going crazy by barking at her leg and eventually biting herself throughout the day. It has got so bad that she does it now in the middle of the night also when she is sleeping. I finally took her to the vet and the vet immediately recommended not giving her Beneful because of so many chemicals that were in the food. This was the root cause of my dogs illness. Unfortunately these chemicals from the food have gotten to her brain.
We are the first stage of her recovery and it is a very slow one. The vet has given two treatments of vitamin injections and has recommended only a cooked meat diet for 10 days to detox her. Additionally she is on a relaxant to try to and fight her biting her leg. I first thought Beneful was a great food for animals but I will never feed this type of food to any dog again.

Then my female started losing her fur in clumps, losing a lot of weight, having trouble urinating and also drinking a lot of water. She was also peeing in the house which was very odd. I noticed blood in her urine and when I took her out to go to the bathroom she would go 3 times, come back in the house and 1 hour later was peeing on different places on the carpet. He behaved normally throughout the 24th and during the morning of the 25th. On Christmas morning, he ran to the car knowing I was going to take him for a ride. He had his usual dry dog food for lunch and still behaved normally. However, at 6:00 p.m. that evening (yesterday), I found him dead on the living room floor. His stomach was bloated. I never heard any sound of distress from him, so I don't know how long it took him to die or what he might have gone through. I did see in the bedroom that he had thrown up and defecated there and there was urine on the floor where he died. He had been to the vet only a week prior to this and the vet could find nothing wrong with him.
I couldn't understand what happened, why he died so suddenly, until I searched for the empty container of the food I gave him, went on the internet today, and started reading other reviews about Beneful, which, by the way, I bought at our local Hannaford's grocery store. Oh where to start.... Let's start by saying that after all 4 of our beloved hairy beastie babies aka: Dogs began throwing up aka: vomiting, nausea, lethargy and just plain old refusing to eat Purina Beneful Healthy Radiance less than a week I realized it was the food as they hadn't had any of these symptoms before starting it & they were sick and miserable. For the first 4 days they loved it and then they all got terribly sick.
I'll also say that I've never seen such a grease filled oily bag of pet food in my LIFE and I've been a guardian for decades. After surviving this horrifically frightening experience with all 4 of them surviving, I'm here to tell you the high fat/grease/oil content in this food is what is making the dogs so sick. It overwhelms their liver and aggravates their pancreas as it can't take it; not to mention their gallbladder. Don't believe me? Haven't you actually felt the food with your hands? The residual it leaves is disgusting.
Before I go into too much detail I'm going to disclose that I am a nurse. But a person does not have to be in the healthcare field to recognize new onsets in any creatures behavior such as what many of our beloveds have experienced when feeding this junk food to them. So, having said that I'm still amazed at how long some pet guardians continued to feed their babies this food prior to either realizing that the drastic change in their behaviors/health began with the change to the food or that once they realized the severe physical vomiting, diarrhea and other severe out of character behaviors continued to wait so long to take them into a vet for care. In all fairness if a human or child would have had these same symptoms the likelihood that a person would wait weeks and weeks to seek treatment is rare.
Also, it is typically the severe dehydration that ends up killing many animals such as the babies who suffered kidney & liver failure/damage from this food as they aren't eating & drinking while they are puking & having diarrhea. This floods the body with toxins as they begin to break down muscle & this also depletes the fluids which leads to stress on the kidney's & liver. If the fluid balance isn't restored rather quickly the damage is done leading to death often times.
Okay so now onto my attention getting yet 100% honest Subject headline above. I phoned Purina with the bag in hand & before I returned it to Petsmart for a full refund after 2 of our 4 babies had been taken to our awesome vet after the severe changes noted above in them & realizing it was the food doing it to them all. Called in the complaint to the number on the back of the bag & informed them that it was indeed the food doing it to them as per 'my vet' & the bills to prove it.
Received a very helpful CS rep at the Consumer Services line who took my complaint & the info off of the bag such as the batch number & then she asked me if I would like to file a claim with Purina's legal department regarding the expenses we had status-post encountering this Beneful Healthy Radiance 31.1 lb food. I only called because I wanted to ensure I did my part to file a complaint with Purina so that no other dogs we're harmed.
I jumped on her offer and was told that I would be contacted by their legal dept. That was on 10/08/2014. Realized on 12-17-2014 that I hadn't heard from them but I did have the letter from Purina dated in October after I called them which allowed me to phone the legal dept. directly. I did. The glitch was that although Purina did enter a case for me when I phoned initially they failed to transmit it to their legal dept. I explained to the legal dept what had happened. They asked me if I had the dollar amounts for all our babies bills which I did. Gave her the grand total.
She then stated she'd like to offer a settlement if I would accept it for the amounts we incurred at our vet. I agreed. Received the letter of release today; less than a week after my call that requires a signature releasing them from any further liability & states you won't sue them. It also states (pic attached) that your releasing them from all wrong doing & that this 'isn't an omission' of guilt. Personally I'm just eternally grateful that all our babies made it as I had rarely been so scared we were going to loose them. I am genuinely sorry to all of you who have lost your beloveds...
I am offering you the only thing that I have that I don't see anyone else providing and it appears you all need it and many are desiring monetary compensation from the company that makes this food as well. I believe in paying it forward so if this helps you then return it by paying it forward to another stranger & remember people: In the end it is the animals who suffered from this dangerous dog food who truly pay the price for us feeding it to them in the first place.
3 pictures are what I've uploaded with this review. I've protected my own privacy but shared the knowledge with you. Not sure if a class action suit is the best but in all honest I suspect that it is as the sheer volume of injuries to poor dogs only grows and the only way to remove it with this food is to get it off the shelves in the first place.

He got better, and it is now 3 years later and he is doing well. He has not had to be catheterized since I changed his dog food. He now eats PURE VITA salmon with cranberries & sweet potatoes. I order it from www.chewy.com.

Hello all, first wanted to say I am so sorry for all of those who have lost their best buddies due to this. I wrote a review about this around 2 yrs ago. My bud was on Beneful Healthy weight and had all the same symptoms, took him to the vet and he was in kidney and liver failure. After a week in the vet and roughly $7,000, I live in NY everything is expensive lol, my bud came out just fine. I had a strange feeling it was this food that was the problem because I noticed when he would eat before we took him to the vet, he would just pick out certain pieces of the food to eat and leave the other pieces on the floor, smart dog. I tried suing Purina but the problem was no lawyer would take the case because first it was a dog, second the $7,000 I wanted to recoup was not a sufficient amount for a lawyer to take the case. I would love to take a class action lawsuit against Purina so if anyone reads this and would like to work with me on getting the ball rolling and seeing what we could do about this please email me at ** . I can't believe this is still happening and it needs to be stopped.

Purina Beneful Healthy Weight Dog Food - My Jack Russell started throwing up daily. We had just returned from a 10-day trip having left him with a sitter, so I thought it was anxiety. However, after 6 days he was still vomiting, yellow frothy vomit. I decided to check for complaints from other dog owners about this dog food, and found almost 800 complaints. I am stopping immediately feeding him Purina products. Shame on Purina for not recalling this product!

My 8 year old male shih has been on Beneful since he was a puppy, he has always had a weird cough but the vet said it could be allergies. We put him on this based off the claim that it had a good balance of meat and veggies, although after further research we found that it's mostly corn and fillers. SHAME ON YOU PURINA!
My dog kept getting UTI which is not common for males like that, and he started to have a very hard time peeing. I came home from lunch one day and he was lying not moving and breathing really weakly and his abdomen was hard! I rushed him to the vet and they had to do an emergency surgery due to bladder stones that formed from crystals. The vet said this has been something they see in dogs due to the dog food. My baby is in recovery and is in pain but he will survive. How dare this company sell a product that they know is killing our pets! I plan to file a major claim as this is one of thousand incidents and I'm just blessed that my baby is still with me.

Last Wednesday my dog, Roxie, had seizures. I immediately took her to the vet. X-rays, blood tests everything was normal... Took her home, noticed the last year. When I started giving her Beneful, she was drinking a large amount of water, which was unusual for her, since she was only 3 1/2lbs a toy yorkie.. She could not stand. And finally after holding her for 3 days she died in my arms on Sunday morning.. I only became aware of the Beneful problem after someone told me this might be dog poisoning.

My dog started having what looked like seizures. His stomach would get real hard, then he would throw up (a great amt) and pant so bad, then after calming him and resting he comes out of it and is somewhat back to normal everyday. I can't afford a vet at this time. I am unemployed. I have been feeding him Beneful dry for like 1-2 years. I Googled his symptoms and it brought up the 787 reviews. After reading them, all our dogs are having similar problems. He is my baby, did this food do this to him? Why is it still on the market? Does no one care that these animals are part of our families? I am so scared now, that my dog may die from this poison. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP OUR ANIMALS!!!! Take this food off the market.

I had a great dog that was doing fine for the age of 12, he was a mix of bernese mountain, golden lab and golden retriever. In June of 2014 I purchased a new bag of Beneful Healthy choice. He has been on Beneful brands for several years, and he just didn't eat like he normally did, he would eat a little bit here and there. This went on for about 2 weeks so I decided to do the mix of hamburger and rice to get him eating again, in the meantime his thirst was unbelievable. Once I gave him the mix of burger and rice he would eat it so I started to mix the dog food in with the burger and rice about 3 days into him eating just the burger and rice. Again he pretty much stopped eating.
Now this is about a month of him not eating or acting right. He went from a happy, active energetic dog to pretty much not even wanting to go outside to do his business. I changed his food from Healthy to the original after he only ate about 1/4 of the healthy weight bag, which I think I even threw 1/2 of the 1/4 bag out. At this point he basically stopped eating all together, he started to urinate in the house, which he has not done since he was a puppy. He could barely walk, slept all the time, threw up constantly, had explainable hot spots on his skin.
I started to give him Beneful moist food figuring he would definitely eat that, he did, 3 servings then refused to eat anymore. Finally he just got to the point where he could no longer hold his bladder and he could no longer walk, I had to hold his back legs so he could do his business, he had no energy whatsoever and lost a considerable amount of weight. In August I could no longer watch him suffer, he went from a big (app 90lb) dog down to about 60 lbs, no life in him anymore. I had no choice but to put him down. He suffered for over 2 months with no explainable reason why until I started reading the consumer complaints about the food. I wish I would have known about this sooner, my dog, my child's protector and member of my family had to suffer and be put down for no reason. Purina needs to take action for this. Countless dogs are suffering for no reason, a lot of expense is spent to find out what is wrong with their animals and they are doing nothing. I spent roughly $5,000 due to this and my dog is no longer with us. Purina should be ashamed of themselves.

I started my dog on the Purina line of dog food because I couldn't find the brand I originally used to buy. At first my dog was fine. I was feeding her Purina Alpo for about two months and then she developed problems with the ligaments in her legs. I then switched to the Beneful kind because it was offered with the healthy joints option. She seemed fine at first but then I started noticing incontinence problems. A few weeks later she started becoming lethargic, then she started vomiting and I noticed a decrease in her urine output. She was given antibiotics because it was believed she had a UTI. She couldn't or wouldn't eat much at this time so I stopped feeding her the dry dog food and switched her to a bland diet of real cooked chicken and rice.
She slowly started to get better and within 2 weeks she seemed to be on the mend. I started feeding her the Purina Beneful again 3 days ago. Immediately she relapsed, so I took her off of it again. There is something definitely wrong with the Purina line of dog food and they need to do something about this. My dog so far has not died but she is also still not healthy. I believe Purina owes it to its customers to explore this and correct this problem. From what I've discovered, I'm not the only one that has had a pet get sick from this particular brand of dog food.

My dog has been eating Beneful dry dog food for years. A few weeks ago after purchasing a new bag I noticed he was coughing a lot. This went on for weeks and I couldn't figure out what was causing it. The other day my dog had a seizure, went totally rigid, couldn't stand up, and his eyes were moving rapidly. I rushed him to the veterinarian, and my dogs blood work showed he had the beginning stages of kidney failure. They weren't sure what caused his seizure, but when I got home I threw out the beneful and put my dog on a diet for kidney failure. So far he is doing so much better. I blame the Beneful dry dog food for all of this. I am so upset and angry over all of this. I think Purina must have changed their ingredients. I am feeding my dog fatty meats, rice, and vegetables now. I will never purchase a Purina product again.

So we decided to switch them to Wellness Puppy because they are small bites and our pugs can't eat large bites. They love Wellness but they poop way too much on Wellness so now we have decided to use the Beneful Dog food with the Wellness to see how things go. So far our doggies enjoy the flavors and sleeping comfortably. REMEMBER PEOPLE IF YOU'RE GONNA CHANGE YOUR ANIMAL FOOD MAKE SURE YOU MIX THE NEW FOOD WITH THE PREVIOUS BEFORE FULLY SWITCHING!! and I don't believe Purina kills animals. My cats are also on Purina dry and wet foods. Been on it for years, never had any problems.

I have two dogs, 1 American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) and 1 APBT/Labrador Mix, both approximately 60 lbs. First, my APBT starting showing signs of difficult/uncontrolled urination. I collected a sample and had it analyzed at the local vet. He had red blood cells in his urine, and was subsequently treated with oral antibiotics (Ciprofloxacin to be exact). After about half a year he had the same issue, frequent/uncontrolled urination with +RBC's when sent for urinalysis. As is true with humans due to anatomical differences, UTIs are not as common in male dogs as female dogs, so the recurrence of UTI was a curious finding.
Not more than a year went by and my male APBT unfortunately needed to have his ACL surgically repaired (we changed vets after the first two UTIs). A few weeks post-op I noticed the urinary issues had returned. For the third time in less than 2 years my male dog had a UTI and we started to suspect other issues. He was also showing signs of excessive thirst at this point. The specific gravity on his urine sample was closer to that of water than urine, and again RBCs were present. Luckily he was due for a post-op x-ray, and my veterinary doctor suggested we look at his bladder as well as the knee he would also be assessing.
The x-ray showed no abnormalities in the bladder or the knee (thank goodness). My vet was stumped, as all blood tests were normal. He started throwing out 'hail mary' diagnoses such as diabetes insipidus (a deficiency in anti-diuretic hormone). After the 3rd round of oral Cipro things really got interesting. One morning a few weeks ago I woke up for work, I found my dog covered in liquid stool and vomit inside his crate. This happened again a few days later and we AGAIN took my dog to the vet; upon arrival my dog was documented to have an approximately 15% decrease in body weight due to his symptoms. He was given a prescription diet and oral Metronidazole (frequently used antibiotic for secondary gastrointestinal infections such as C. difficile). My dog, on his new diet, turned into a new/revived dog with all the energy he used to have.
Two weeks cured, foolishly, we tried to re-start both dogs back on their Purina Beneful diet. Within 24 hours my male APBT started having urine accidents in the house, and this morning my mixed breed (female) was found in her cage covered in liquid stool and vomit. Curiously recalling the last few days I noted increased thirst in my mixed breed dog who was consuming Purina. My APBT has not been sick for over two weeks, so it is highly unlikely that she caught anything from him. The only change is the food.
I began to investigate and found many claims online with the EXACT same symptoms as my dogs. This is a coincidence too large to ignore. We threw out most of the Purina dog food in our house except one small sample in a zip-lock bag and the UPC label. I intend to have it analyzed for contaminants. I've spent hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on vet bills from my Pit Bull being sick and treated with antibiotics. I can only pray that no long-term damage has been done. I am in the process of obtaining a copy of our receipt from our local food market, and I intend to pursue this issue further.

They immediately got him on IV fluids and watched him overnight. No move committing however the next morning began having extreme blood stool (literally liquid blood) which continued for two more days. His PAC cell count continued to drop showing signs of worsening internal bleeding. I got a call later that day stating he was experiencing heart arrhythmia and needed to be transported to a different clinic that had a cardiologist.
Upon getting to the second clinic, he collapsed due to the arrhythmia. The next day I was informed that his PAC cell count was 8% which none of the Vets had ever seen in a living animal. He was bleeding to death and we decided to do a full blood transfusion. After the transfusion he started to improve, enough for us to do an endoscopy. With this they found an abnormal patch of tissue within his stomach containing bleeding ulcers. Although nothing definitive was made of this the vet said the biopsies showed signed of a anaphylactic reaction.
After 7 days in ICU, he finally came home. We have been treating his stomach with numerous meds and have switched over to a prescription diet. Now 10 days in, he is finally showing real signs of improvement. Still very weak, for the first time I feel he might pull through. After $15,000 of vet bills (yes $15,000) I still am unsure as to what really caused this. I began searching about the good I have been feeding him (Beneful) and was shocked at what I found. I can't say definitely that Beneful caused this however it sure sounds like it.

Did some research on reviews of Beneful and Walmart and many other were 4.8 stars out of 5. Used soft food when previous dog was 14 years old to mix his meds in when he sick (that was 5 years ago) and wonderful to mix meds in when old. I decided to start to change my present dog to a food I thought was good food available at regular grocery store and had coupons to help with cost occasionally. He seemed to like it at first. Then he started itching, hot spots, drinking a lot, acting weird (even when my mom came to visit she mentioned it). I thought he had allergies to food even though I was changing him over gradually 7 lbs Beneful to around 30+ pounds science diet.
Mom saying that when she visited was kicker. I started hand picking Beneful out of mix. In just three days started to see difference. He did stop itching as much (before I stopped food even meds only slightly if at all reduced his itch. Now few days later, my husband didn't know I was picking out Beneful said he acts like he feels a little better today. Started reading post and I knew before I read but now confirmed I was making him sick with food that was wasn't really cheap and I thought I had checked out with looking at a few good ratings. Would have been heart broken with physical disability if I would have killed my best friend that I spend many days with when I cant get out of the house due to limitations. Even more upset to see 700 and some complaints that didn't even show up when first researched it.
Saw good rating and made in USA and thought I was safe as long as my little (65 pound) buddy liked it. Our 4 year old dog always seem to scratch and shake and this past year she was taken to the vet because she had diarrhea and she was throwing up. They diagnosed her to have stress but at that time they did no blood work. They said she had stress when we would changed shifts. So last week she got sick again. We also had recently switched her food from Beneful to Pure Balance which you can only get that brand at Walmart. We thought Pure Balance was ok. Maybe not. So last week she started not eating her new food. Even though she ate it when we were mixing it with Beneful to change it. Once it was just the new dog food. She stopped eating Pure Balance and we could only get her to eat her dog treats. She stopped eating but she continued to drink and poop. She also seemed to constantly scratch at her stomach and wouldn't stop.
So after 2 days of not really eating she become so lethargic that my husband had to get her out of bed. And that morning she woke us up to having a seizure. We ran her into PETS emergency and they did blood work and her liver enzymes were elevated and her platelets were critically low. He had asked us if she had any poisoning but our dog never chewed or got in to anything like that. He put her on antibiotics and a steroid to bring her platelets up. She is slowly recovery and her platelets are still continuing to improve and increase. So we researched and will never fully know what cause our dog to be so sick. I also researched about dog foods that have the synthetic vit k and had been making them sick. I'm not sure if it’s true. I am so glad she is starting to come around. I didn't know I was slowly making him ill. I know it is this dog food because he started acting this way when I started feeding him this food. Then he wouldn't eat it and practically starved himself. I weened my dog into it using the remainder of her science diet. As soon as she started eating the Beneful on its own, she would throw it up. Every night for a week I would be woken up by her puking. On Sunday I switched her back to the regular science diet (not sensitive) but she wouldn't eat it so I tried giving her Beneful and she wouldn't eat that either. I tried giving her some chicken, nope and some of her favorite treats.. Again wouldn't eat it.
We're talking about a dog who LOVES her some boiled chicken. Anyway after 3 days of her not eating anything except grass and barely drinking any water I took her to the vet. They took her temperature rectally and when they pulled out the thermometer there was blood. After lab work was done and came back clear, they did some feeling around and found her lower intestine to be swollen. She has never had issues like this before and I have a strong feeling it's from the Beneful. She was throwing it up so it was obviously irritating her stomach. Not a satisfied customer! Then he started peeing in the house, then pooping diarrhea in the house. He looked just as shocked as we did when he did it. Soon he became very lethargic, started throwing up bile and having bloody stools. We took him to the vet and about $800 later found out he had horrible stomach ulcers all over the place. He would barely drink water and wouldn't eat any food.
We put him on meds and he didn't eat for about 5 days. Then he felt better and ate some chicken. Didn't throw it up. The next day he ate the Beneful dog food, threw it up. Then our other dog Kiba started throwing up and acting kinda lethargic. Our dog Charlie absolutely refused to eat Beneful and only ate table scraps and showed no symptoms. This time we gave them table scraps here and water. Then two days later gave them Beneful and vomit everywhere again...
We tried looking at recalls for dog food but didn't see Beneful just Purina. Then I google Beneful recalls 2014 and found this site. We have been feeding our 50 lb dog, Awesome-Dog, the wet Beneful food for 'dinner' EVERYDAY for YEARS. Over the past 8 months, Awesome lost her appetite. She's very lethargic on walks, around the house and just not her usual Awesome-Dog self. Her stomach gurgles a lot, is bloated at times and she always wants to nibble on plants. The vet prescribed meds to treat her GI issues, but there was no improvement.. so more tests.. Her blood work was good, but she had a low-normal thyroid level, so we treated that.
The vet said she has arthritis, crepitus and bone calcification and again, we gave her meds for that too. The vet can't seem to figure out the problem exactly. It's been suggested she has a tumor, but it's expensive to test and treat. We discussed with our vet different types and brands of dog foods to avoid, but Beneful was not mentioned. I am LIVID to learn that I have been UNNECESSARILY MEDICATING my dog and ALL of her problems are due to feeding her BENEFUL!! I trusted the brand and fed it to her day in and day out, only making her more and more SICK. I can only hope it's not too late her Awesome-Dog. I discovered two years ago that Beneful Dog Food was dangerous for my dogs and my friend Shelly's White 98 lb Boxer, Lexi and we started feeding our pets organic cooked food. However, my adopted Mom was getting older and she wanted my two Chihuahuas with her full time for company and therapy (she feeds them, she feeds herself, she walks them, she walks herself, plus they are a joy to keep her company). Well I discovered, TOO LATE, that her Housekeeper was buying and feed my girls Beneful. Tieka died of all the symptoms of eating this food including excessive thirst, trouble defecating, lethargy, restlessness, etc. Took her to the vet where tests were performed. Enlarged heart, calcified kidney, and oral squamous cell carcinoma. This all started in June and by August 7th, 2014 she died in my arms! I only feed my Peanut and Grace Organic food I cook myself. Purina can rot in hell!

I have just bought a bag of Beneful which my 9 week old puppy seems to love. But when I was out the other day and I got talking to this lady about dogs, about dog foods and which one was better. She said they are all about the same but don't feed your dog BENEFUL! Then she went on to a similar story as I've read on your web page. What I want to know is has the problem with the food been resolved? The latest report you have posted is in 2012. My sister lives with me and has two dogs and the older one has eaten Beneful all her life and has had no problems. My puppy keeps getting out with her older dogs food and seems to love it. That's why I bought her a bag of puppy Beneful. We don't want to continue with Beneful if this problem hasn't been resolved. So Please let me know ASAP.

After opening a new bag of Playful Life by beneful my dog was horribly sick. He was vomiting, diarrhea, lethargic, wheezing and couldn't walk or eat. We rushed him to the vet where he was put on steroids, IV to re-hydrate and antibiotics. He almost died. He was there for four days. We got him home. We had him on the meds and a rice and meat diet. This past Monday we started him back on Beneful (the same bag). He was worse than before in just hours. We got him to the hospital and the vet got him on an IV and flushed his system. He was sure it was this Lot of food. We finally got our boy home this afternoon and I will be making his food from now on. I started a claim with the company and am in the process of joining a class action lawsuit against them. Please like my Facebook page as well "Ban Beneful."

Let's see, where do I start. Beneful killed my dog. Puppy-Dog was a healthy 8 year old purebred black lab. She ate Beneful and Alpo canned food (also terrible). In January of 2013 she had an episode where she vomited yellow bile uncontrollably all night, but was fine by morning. I assumed it was something she ate. She also had 3 bad accidents in the house that year. I assumed it was from the canned food and that it messed with her stomach. In October/November I noticed that she stopped eating her canned food, which was so rare for her. I chalked it up to her preferring the beef version to salmon or chicken. She also refused the Beneful even with wet food on top.
On January 1, 2014 I noticed that she was straining to defecate, and could not go. When she did, it was watery/loose. She refused all food but drank water. I made a bland chicken noodle soup and fed her canned pumpkin as well, believing she was simply constipated. It was not until the night of January 2 that I noticed the huge mass in her belly when she played down. I called the vet asap on the 3rd. They immediately did an x-ray after feeling the mass. In the next few moments, my world shattered as the doctor explained to me that my sweet puppy dog had a gigantic tumor on her spleen. They often enlarge rapidly, so it was nothing that I could have caught sooner. We went to a specialist the same day, where she started pallative care in the ICU. We were told we could operate to remove the cancer, but the odds were not good. I made the decision to let her rest pain free the next day. I did not want her to suffer.
Long story not so short, we adopted a shelter pup a few days later and before bringing her home I decided to google pet foods. I assumed her death was just a fluke! Never did I imagine that a food that killed dogs and gave them cancer would be allowed on the market. Boy was I wrong. I read over complaint after complaint of spleen cancer and other cancers and deaths. I was sick. It has almost been one year now and I still tell every person I see purchasing this dog food to please research it. I know people think I am nuts. I used to think that people were dog food snobs when they fed their dogs pricier dog food. I now know better. I wish I knew then. Please, do not feed Beneful to your dog. Unless it is the only thing you can afford and it will keep your pup off of the streets or out of shelters, please do not feed this crap. Please take this dog food off of the market. Our pets deserve better than the painful death that this food causes.

I have been feeding my dogs (7) Beneful Healthy Weight for over a year now. I have just recently had to have one of my dogs euthanized due to calcification of the organs... Vit D poisoning. This dog food contains Vit D3 which is more toxic than other Vit D. I feel that they are responsible for her death. They must not care for the animals. It must be all about the money. The 4 vets that examined my dog had never seen an animal's organs like hers EVER in an ultrasound. She received no supplements, just the dog food. No table scraps. They said her organs were calcified. She was lethargic, depressed, lost 30 pounds in almost a week, would not eat and was retaining water in her abdomen due to increased thirst. She was also peeing in the house which never happens. Her sister is displaying some of the same symptoms. I had to spend $1000 and then have her put to sleep for additional amount of money. When will it stop! I have no photos, nor did I have a necropsy done. I feel it is the dog food. I am going to change brands immediately. The food makers know it is hard to prove exactly why these things happen so are not concerned. Shame on them and I hope they feel the guilt of all of this when it is time for them to be laid to rest.

Always wanting to provide the best nutrition for my dog, a seven year old Yorkie, I too fell for the pretty, tempting, glossy photos on the bags of Beneful dry dog food, specifically, Incredibites for small dogs. My dog has been enjoying this phony dog food for the past few several years, always seeming to enjoy it and always finishing what she was given. Just this past weekend, Saturday evening to be exact, while visiting my parents with our dog, she suddenly started vomiting. After returning home, the dog vomited a few more times during the night and could not settle and get comfortable. Sunday morning came along, the vomiting had stopped.....we tried to resume our normal morning routine.... Went outside, she was too tired to walk so I carried her to the backyard. She would not move and simply wanted to be picked up.
Over the course of the day, she would not eat, drank a little, did not void or defecate...... However, she was very lethargic and slept most of the day. Monday we took her to see the vet, after various blood tests, x-rays, an IV drip to hydrate, a hung bag of antibiotics and morphine for the pain, she has been diagnosed with pancreatitis; too much fat in her system. Isn't it coincidental that Beneful dry dog food is sprayed with fat to make it more desirable. Our dog is still at the vet waiting to be assessed again in the morning.... Hopefully we can bring her home tomorrow. I am not only a consumer, more importantly I am an owner of a small dog who only asks to be loved and will in turn love back unconditionally....... It is time that we were the voice and took a stand against the big conglomerate with the little heart....

I noticed it as soon as I opened a new bag, so it did not just magically appear after the bag was opened. I opened the bag in case there was more. It obviously happened at the factory where they make the food. My dogs are safe but I am concerned about the product.

I have just recently stopped feeding my two cavalier King Charles spaniels Beneful dry dog food. For the last week they all of a sudden have shunned away from the food. They normally have very voracious appetites when I feed them it. However, they just recently balked at the food and refused to eat it. They eventually caved in and ate the food due to hunger. They have been on Beneful for two years and never refused to eat it. So now my dogs are sick at home. Not horrible but enough that I went and bought a different brand and they gobbled it up with no adverse affects. They had mild bouts of diarrhea and vomiting with the Beneful in the last week. It was a new bag so I suspect something was wrong with it. Treats they had no problem eating either. It was just when I fed them the Beneful that they turned away from it. I read others complaints and knew something was wrong and I didn't want to chance so I had to toss out an almost full bag.

My golden messed in her kennel after eating the new bag for two days. She cried and needed to go outside every hour so I immediately began feeding her a bland diet of rice and chicken I cooked myself. My lab mix ate the food for one more day and suddenly he had the same problem but my golden was doing better and had a normal appetite again. We took a 15 month old golden retriever that was surrendered back to our breeder. He came with his crate, a dog bone and a bag of Beneful. He didn't even look like a golden retriever. His fur was short, dry and coarse and his tail looked like a lab, no long hair like a retriever and no feathering on his legs. The vet called his tail a "rat tail".
The first thing I did was get rid of the Beneful and put him on a healthy dog food. It took a few months but once his food was changed, the fur became longer and soft and his tail was fuller and the fur grew as did his feathering on his legs. We are so thankful he came to us and was able to get better and healthier food. It makes me angry that a company that is considered reliable and one you can trust can put out such poor food.

I have fed my dog nothing but Beneful dog food for the 10 yrs I had her. She was very healthy until she wasn't. Dr. said she had a spleen tumor and signs of pre-cancer. She also showed enlarged lymph nodes. Her blood work was all over the place and she was lethargic and not eating. She would eat anything but her Beneful. She had been shying away the last 2 bags I had gotten but I didn't realize what was happening. She was telling me "no!" "Something's wrong and I don't like this anymore." I took it as she was getting old and picky with her food. She wouldn't even eat the Beneful when I poured bacon grease on it.
It got to a point where she lost 10 lbs from her "picky eating". She hadn't been getting enough nutrition and her kidneys started to fail. She could no longer defecate. She was drinking a lot of water but the vet insisted on putting her on IV fluids. She spent almost a week at the vet on IV fluids and meds. The vet told me to take her home because she wasn't going to make it through the night. She told me the only thing I could do is be with her. She ended up fighting for another week before I couldn't bear to watch her suffer any longer. We decided to put her to sleep.
The night before I did I got a link to Consumer Affairs sent to me by my friend. He said people were outraged about Beneful killing their dogs. I clicked and read for an hour story after story of people with dogs having the exact same conditions after eating Beneful. I was proud to feed my dog Purina and I was never skeptical until I read all of those stories. Now I am convinced the food caused her issues. The vets ran test after test and could find no other source. I will never recommend Purina to anyone ever again.

So we slowly look it out throughout the day. My dachshund made a fast recovery after taking some pepto bismol. My other dog, a much older beagle did not have a quick recovery. His got worse. Both were vomiting blood and blood in their stool. Like I said, the dachshund made a quick recovery. The beagle started have massive diarrhea and it was nothing but blood. A massive amounts within an hour. I was so scared that I was going to lose him. He would not eat or even drink. We thought it was going to be the end.
Fortunately, as of right now, he is recovering. I hope he makes a fully recovery and stays with us for a few more years. Today is July 11th, 2014. All of this was in a span for two to three days. He is still recovery and it looks like he will pull through. So please. Everyone, do not feed your dogs this food. I'm one of the lucky ones whose dog has not died from this brand of dog food.

In April I switch my dog to Beneful wet dog food and noticed a change in my dogs health shortly after. Originally thinking it was caused by less walks due to our long cold winter and additional food intake I over looked the symptoms. The symptoms started at just bloating but soon she became lethargic, wasn't eating as much and eventually stopped eating all together. She also suffered from bloody stool and vomiting. Not long after the bloody stools started she passed away. This is when I with the help of my grandson researched what could cause these issues only to be astounded at the fact that her food is what caused her death. The additives and other things in the food causing the liver and kidneys to shut down, in many dogs, along with the symptoms that were present in my dog. I brought this to the attention of my vet who explained that she doesn't recommend Beneful to the owners of the animals she treats.

Ellie was a white shepherd greyhound mix and a wonderful animal. We were feeding her Beneful for a while until she became ill. It started with her not wanting to eat. She would poke her nose around the food bowl and push most of it onto the floor. I wish we paid attention to this! We kept giving her Beneful thinking she was just being picky. One evening after dinner she started throwing up black fluid. There was what seemed like buckets full, it just kept coming. Then she started to move her head around from side to side and up and down as if she was out of her mind (I have video). She would drink a lot of water and started to pee in the house. Sometimes in her sleep. We changed her food. Months later, she started to slow down until she couldn't pick herself up. She pretty much stopped eating and slept most of the time. She started throwing up water when she would drink it so we took her back to the vet.
Our vet took xrays and they showed us that her stomach lining was so swollen and diseased that it was forcing her intestines and organs to the right side of her body. Even her spine was bent. They also showed that her liver and kidneys were full of holes like Swiss cheese (I have pics of the xrays). We had Ellie put to sleep after seeing just how much she was suffering. I still have 2 large bags of this food and will have it analyzed as soon as I find a place to do that. Our vet was certain it was the food that did Ellie in. I think it is obvious. I should have listened to her. I am so sorry Ellie Girl, I just didn't know that the people we trust with your best interest, in fact cannot be trusted.

I scooped food out of my 5 year old female Blue Heeler's already half eaten bag of Beneful dog food. It was a 15.5lb bag of Purina Beneful IncrediBites SKU# 1780013639 with an expiration date of April 2015 and the code below the expiration date is 4115 1082 1549 L10-99. It was purchased at Walmart in Norwalk, OH. When I scooped the food out of the bag, I found this "fabric string" in the food. It is about 6-7 inches long and almost a centimeter in width. It looks like very thin fabric or a paper type material that is covered in a hardened glue substance. I called Purina Beneful at 1-888-236-3385 to let them know what happened. They were nice and listened to my story of what had happened and apologized.
They offered to replace the bag of dog food and asked me to keep the string and they would send me prepaid envelope to send it back to them in so they could check it out. About 5 minutes after getting off the phone with them, I received a call from the customer service representative that had just assisted me. She frantically told me that the string in the food wasn't a string at all. It was the web of a non parasitic grain based insect, such as a larvae or a moth. The glue-like substance on the string wasn't glue, it was the eggs of the non parasitic insect. They typically can get into the bags while at the distribution facilities. She told me that I needed to immediately dispose off the web and the food securely in an outside container and they did NOT want me to send it back to them! She was brief and I questioned as to what this may do to my dog and they said that since it's non-parasitic and that it would not affect her.
She was then quick to get off of the phone with me. I was concerned and confused, so I Googled about it. I learned that there are 100's, if not 1000's of complaints about Purina Beneful and the Purina brand in general about bugs in the food, making pets severely ill and also killing them, in most cases! Whole households of dogs dying! I called Purina back and asked more questions. As soon as I started asking more questions about the bugs, the health and safety of my pet, and taking her to the vet to be checked out after what I just found out (and since she's already ate half the bag of food!), I was told that I would need to make a claim with their insurance company, Sedgwick Claims Management, and they would handle my case from there. He then started acting like it was no big deal and that since the bugs are grain-based, they could be in any type of food. I have since taken to social media with the picture of the object. I have been told that it could also be a dead tape worm?!
We will not being using any Nestle/Purina brands anymore and I have also forwarded my incident to the FDA and the USDA. My dog will be visiting the vet for an exam and to be tested as well.

Why is this product still on the shelf? If Purina Beneful is so trusted why can't I put my trust in them to REALLY look into this matter. =( Seems like they don't care about our dogs only the money they are getting from the $1.99 product yet we are stuck with thousands in vet bills! Someone PLEASE has to investigate. Our dogs are part of our family! To sum up my story my dog Daisy (just turned 9 in May) was checked around a week ago, blood work pretty much everything for a healthy status. All of her levels were great! The Petsmart Banfield Vet said for her age she is excellent! Randomly, I thought Beneful would be a great product to start giving my dog for dinner instead of her dry food (Science Diet). I've always heard slowly mix or transition your pet into a new food so I thought a quarter of the packet will do (small portion).
Within hours my dog Daisy who didn't show any signs of being sick went to extremely sick on only a quarter of the food! She would have died if she did not go to the 24 hr. animal hospital. After running lots of tests to see what could be wrong they told me the dog was suffering from kidney/liver failure but didn't know how severe until more tests were done. They were even shocked because she was JUST CHECKED! Her blood work was even on file from the week prior. I had to say goodbye to my dog on Sunday 6/8/14 because the animal hospital was unsure if she would even make it through the night. About $4000 later she is slowly recovering. Her symptoms were vomiting, red stool-diarrhea, lethargic, not responsive at all! I have pictures of everything.
My dog just got back from her ultrasound today to find out that her kidney/liver is, "thank god" okay but swollen from this Beneful "poison" food. The time waiting to hear if your pet will die is something nobody should have to go through. Regardless if it's killing 1 or a 1000 pets out of million would you put your pet at risk? A food should not cause death! Something has to be done/investigated! I went through the worst 48 hours and I can't imagine the pain my dog went through! PLEASE DO NOT FEED YOUR PET THE BENEFUL BRAND unless you want to put your pet at risk to suffer from kidney/liver failure/death.
Whether you have a small or large dog why take the chance with this food? From forums and research that I have been doing, the Beneful brand does not see to effect large dogs as much because their kidney's are larger. It does however kill them once they have been several years on it. All of the pictures are in order of how things started and where Daisy is at today. I'm trying to stay positive that Daisy is strong enough to fight off this garbage/poison dog food. Hospital is pretty sure I can take her home tomorrow as all of her levels our back to normal and looking healthy again. She has a last final checkup tomorrow morning.

Our beloved, barely 7 yr. old Max (Shepherd/Akita Mix) died last week from kidney failure. I strongly suspect he was poisoned by the Beneful line of foods/treats and am in the process of proving it. Poor guy tried to pull through but it was just too much of an assault on his stressed out body. I wonder if it's only a matter of time before it's proven that the contaminated food killing our pets is partially the FDA's fault for approving and allowing an increase in the amount of aflatoxin-afflicted corn to be blended into our animal feed. Could this Sept 2013 FDA ruling allowing higher amounts of this fungus into our pets food be causing the problem now because that food is now presently on the grocer's shelves?
I think Beneful and its product line amount to a toxic stew for our pets and with all the recent complaints it should be pulled from the market and investigated. Max and other pets are now paying a huge price for the heartless corporations/agencies/lobbyist involved which seem to care about their own revenues or politics over the health of our beloved pets. But now I know Beneful must be the crack of dog food or something.... Scary.

It has been six months now since both of my dogs have been off of Beneful Healthy Weight dog food. I think one reason they are still alive today is because I discovered the link between their dog food and their numerous tumors, tremors, seizures, and liver problems. Both dogs were having the same problems, in addition to throwing up yellow foam which looked like bile. Since changing their food, only one of my dogs has had one tremor. I am convinced that it was the Beneful. I don't know what made me look up the reviews on their food, but I'm glad that I did and made the connection. Please, if you care about your pets, you will not feed them Beneful.

Our terrier mix was getting older and had to be put on meloxicam for arthritis (he was having a hard time getting around). This made him sick to his stomach, so we tried a few different dog foods to see if one whetted his appetite. We tried Beneful and he ate some, but continued not wanting to eat. We reduced the meloxicam and tried mixing Beneful with Rachel Ray's dog food and he finally started eating again. Within a week or so of eating he had a seizure (he never had one before) and died within an hour of it. It's possible it was his time - he was 12. But the way he went.... He peed himself, was weak, just so sick.... Do not use Beneful! Even if all these reports are coincidental, it's not worth the risk. It was a horrible way to go.

My 7 year old rescue mix breed love of my life, has always been neurotic but not prone to illness, until now. I have always fed her Iams weight control because she is a fat butt (I know I have read about Iams, but for 7 years have had no problem with it). About 7 weeks ago I ran out of food and the store didn't have Iams weight control so I grabbed Beneful weight control as it seemed comparable when I read the ingredients. Right around that time Chelsie started peeing in the house. I just chalked it up to the fact that she's getting old and maybe getting up the stairs at night to wake me up was too much trouble for her, and that she couldn't hold it all day while I was at work anymore.
Pretty soon her urine started smelling really bad, and I got worried she had a kidney infection, so I kept an eye on her, but she didn't seem to have any other symptoms. Then on Sunday, we went to the store and bought another bag of Beneful. I gave her a bowl of it Sunday evening.... She threw up 6 times before bedtime, and two more times in the night. When I got to work yesterday morning I did a quick Google search and found this page. I immediately called my daughter who is an animal science major and has her vet tech license and teaches animal science classes. She went to my house, examined Chelsie and called my boyfriend to tell him to be prepared to comfort me because she was sure Chelsie was going to have to be put down.
She took Chelsie to the vet ER here in the Sacramento area, and thankfully the vet doesn't seem to think that would be necessary. After several hundred dollars in tests I am waiting for a phone call from the vet today to tell me what they found. She is under the opinion that it may just be a kidney infection, and she will recover. That of course doesn't explain the vomiting, but I'm going to try to stay positive. Now I am fully convinced it is the Beneful, since the stories on this page are exactly what Chelsie has been going through. The only odd thing is that I have a 10 pound pom mix and she eats out of Chelsie's bowl whenever she can sneak it and she has been fine.

Our 4 1/2-yr-old American Bulldog has been on Beneful since she was 8 months old; the first week in April, I bought a large bag of Beneful. It seemed to have a strong dog food smell and was more orange but I thought nothing of it. Immediately my puppy started having bulldog farts that could clear the house. If you have a bulldog you know how they like to fart but these were constant and nauseating. She started 3 weeks ago with liquid soft stools. Then exactly 2 weeks ago, she started pouring straight water out her bum.
I took her to the vet and they tested her urine and it was normal; it took me a while but I was able to collect a stool sample and it too came back with no infection, no parasites, no bacteria. She of course has excessive thirst but her weight is dropping quickly. The vet mentioned possible Adenocarcinoma or it being her dog food. I am absolutely disgusted to find out that Beneful has so many complaints and deaths and that Purina has not taken the food off the shelves. I am convinced it is her food because she is not at all acting like a dog with cancer. Her appetite is great and she is as playful as she can considering being a little weak from losing the weight and water.
I changed her diet to chicken and rice and scrambled egg. The Lomotil and antibiotics did nothing and I am monitoring to see if this change in diet turns her around. Prayers for my puppy please. She is a member of our family and to think that nothing is being done to companies that have so many complaints (just this site alone is over 700) not including all the other sites and Facebook pages made about how Purina is killing dogs sickens me to the core.

We noticed that she was leaving the red colored dog food and not eating it until later when she was very hungry. She began urinating blood and seemed to have little to no control of her bladder. We took her to the vet and had her on antibiotics for a week and it seemed to help. We began removing the red colored Beneful bits and her bladder was better and she stopped urinating blood. Not to mention she is very lethargic and will not even come to her name. She will look at you but not happily come to our side like normal. The ONLY thing that has changed is the dog food! My wife and I went out yesterday and forgot to take our regular food. We always use Science Diet or Puppy Pro Plan combination. Since we were outside, as a temporary solution, we got Purina Beneful Chopped Blends from Kroger for his lunch as it came in a small container and there was no wet Pro Plan in a container, which I now realize was a big mistake. We gave the same Beneful for dinner as well, just to finish the can as we did not know at that time that it would be harmful for my little one. When we took him out for a walk, he started eating grass and I thought his stomach was perhaps upset with a different brand of food and did not take it serious at that time.
This morning, he went diarrhea and I was surprised to see the color of the elimination and immediately I knew it should have been the food, but I was unable to confirm it. Later, my wife found vomit on his bed which was the rice and chicken which confirmed that something was wrong with him. I came online to check what was wrong as the only thing I changed was his food for just a day and found enormous volume of complaints about Beneful in this site as well as other websites.
Trust me when I say, you bring up your dog as your kid and it's hard to see him going through all the pain. Gladly, we noticed this at a very early stage and since it was just one time and we are back on the original Science Diet, I'm assuming my Boxer puppy would become better soon. After reading through a ton of Forums, we saw the same kind of review for IAMS as well. So, just beware before you feed these food.
To be fair, my puppy loves Purina Pro Plan and Science Diet, but after reading the reviews for Beneful and experiencing it, I'm just shocked how can such a product be on the shelves of Walmart, Kroger, Petsmart and Feeders Supply. don't they value life? I read that all the meat byproducts along with all the preservatives are dangerous for your pet. We don't have the time to cook homemade food for our pets and we trust and depend on these products, but I was shocked to see so many bad reviews.
Thank God for these reviews and technology. We were able to get a sense of what was going on and we'll take actions, but trust me, I'm going to post this on Facebook, Twitter and other forums to let everyone know how harmful these products can be. Common misconception is that if it's expensive, it'll be better and I learnt my lesson! I wanted to be as elaborate as possible so that whoever reads this should understand that vomiting and Diarrhea symptoms are very dangerous for your puppies and dogs. If you identify and detect those symptoms earlier after feeding Beneful or IAMS even for a day, please change the food, else it WILL kill your pet! Hopefully my Spike will become better as he is a fighter!

Many of the symptoms described on the complaints my dog (Shelby) is experiencing now, so it therefore is the dog food the company is selling and for this to be acceptable is society is insane. This company should be brought up on charges for animal cruelty and animal endangerment which they have done to numerous dogs. This is ridiculous. Purina has lost my business for ever. My name is Cheryl and I have 3 gorgeous doxies, Clyde 10, Sadie 6, and Roxie 7. They have been enjoying Beneful for 6 months now, October 2013 - Feb 2014. And I noticed like my dogs were acting funny in the face area, like blinking like something was biting their eyes and nose, mouth. I’m very close to my animals. I spend day and night spoiling them. They didn't ever even have fleas or ticks. So I thought they never go out of their yard and no other pet has been around. We are very private people. I gave them mite and flea treatment. Still the same rubbing their faces and they after a month of not correcting this I was at a loss.
I did research online to find out what it could be. It seemed I had done what everyone else was doing. I bombed the house, had a friend spray for all insects and I thought maybe they have a virus so I took the dog Roxie to the vet. She was compromised from treatments and bathing so often. She developed a mange type of shedding. She couldn't stop rubbing and itching all the time. Got a treatment for her. It’s been working for the moment then 2 days later she’s full of bumps. All this started to stress our whole family out on a daily basis, and a bit stranger. I keep my home very clean and it just didn't seem right that I would wash the kitchen and bedroom floors and the dirt was more and more every day so we didn't wear shoes any more. Still I could ring my mop out 8-10 times and it would still be black till 10 or more washes.
I found a lady who told me to use black tea on the dogs and floors. Well I bought a lot of tea 300 bags. It seemed to ease the dogs a bit being I can’t afford this anymore, every cent that I have was now being spent on aid for mites. This lady told me that her Beneful dog food had grain mites of some kind. Well I never would have thought that a mite could be so horrible. Still 5 months later we have some peace, if I wash the floors morning and evening several times with soap and tea, wash all linens, bedding and dogs had to bathe with a medically formulated shampoo and tea daily.
It’s crazy and it’s made my life a mess. Nothing is worse than this problem. I don’t have any more money, and my patience is wearing thin. My animals don't deserve this nor does any human. I found that there are more people like us suffering. Why aren't you taking this dog food off the shelf? There are hundreds that don’t know what is going to be their worst nightmare. My animals need help I need to get these out of our home and live normal and put this behind us. God you don't want this to happen to your animals. My home and this ordeal has depressed me to a point that is a danger to my health and it’s still not resolved. How can this get better and what do I do to be bug free. I feel so ashamed of this but I shouldn’t. It’s not our fault we trusted this dog food co. How can we be happy again. And what has it done inside my animals. Doxies like to sniff everything in their path but their path is hurting them. Help us.

I took him to the vet within two days (due to a snowstorm), and he informed me his heart was failing, his lungs were full of fluid as well as his liver and kidneys were failing. Finding all these complaints about Beneful is frustrating for me because I fear it may be too late. My 12-yr-old Lab is deathly ill. He cannot keep anything down, refuses to eat or drink, has trouble walking, and most recently began to quiver. I never suspected it could be the food. It started about a week ago (and coincided with opening a new bag of Beneful little bites) with severe vomiting. Figuring he had eaten something he shouldn't, I put him on a bland diet of rice and chicken. A day later, he seemed much better. As he was keeping the food down and having regular bowel movements, I started incorporating the Beneful back into his diet on day three of treatment. By day four he was vomiting uncontrollably. For two days, I have been trying to keep him hydrated by using a syringe (no needle) to force small amounts of water. He will not eat, will not drink, and keeps getting worse. Although it may be some other reason, I find it a strange coincidence that all this started and resumed upon the feeding of Beneful dog food. I fear my dog will not recover and will have to be euthanized to end his obvious misery.

Our dog Sadie has been on Purina healthy weight dry dog food since she was 12 weeks old (German Shepherd). Had no problems at all. Our dog is the life blood of our family as she is the reason my wife is still alive from her stroke. Now we jump ahead to this last month of February 2014, the 19th to be exact, the date Sadie was born and she now has turned 12 yrs old. Noticed out of nowhere Sadie started having diarrhea and would not want to get up and come sit and watch tv with my wife and I. Kept a close eye on her wondering what if any has changed with her. I could not find anything at all except that I just started a new bag of Purina's Beneful healthy weight.
I started her on a bland homemade diet of boiled rice with boiled carrots and boiled chicken switching off between chicken and hamburger (leanest I could buy). Kept her on that and made sure she had plenty of water cause she was really drinking bowls full of water as of late. Well went to vet to get a fecal test done thought it might be a parasite but none showed up. Vet said maybe it's a virus and to just keep giving her the bland diet. Well I'm here to tell you that within 48 hrs of being on the rice diet Sadie started being herself again and her poop started back regular. UNTIL I made the mistake of not picking up her regular dog food bowl which I forgot to put on table. You guessed it she ate 1/4 of it and within an hr she was moaning in pain to go outside. You guessed it diarrhea came back big time.
We love our shepherd like she were a kid. She's family to us. With Sadie being off the Beneful now for two days I noticed her poop getting back to being regular and she wasn't moaning in pain. Now you tell me either Purina foods changed something in that healthy weight dry dog food within the last yr because every time I've opened a new bag it's smelled like a strong chemical of such that it actually stinks. I for the life of me don't ever remember Beneful smelling so terrible. Well my neighbor had just put his dog down because the same thing happened to him so quick out of nowhere, but he didn't catch it in time. He lost his best buddy of 11yrs to food poisoning.
It's downright wrong that these big companies think they can get away with killing innocent animals. I'm just praying I caught it in time with our Sadie. Time will tell as she is real weak but there's a different look in her eyes now since she's off Beneful healthy weight. She seems happier and brings her toys out again and her tails wagging, but she is still very weak and having problems walking. She's lost much muscle tone in her back legs and she was guaranteed hip dysplasia free when we first picked her up. She's a search and rescue dog.
God I feel so mad that so many animals have either died from this food or have been really sick. Someone ought to start a lawsuit against Purina. It's just not right they get away with killing our pets. After googling healthy weight Beneful and seeing how long this has been going on, all I can say is people if you noticed a sudden change in your pet and you've changed nothing with the food and your dog becomes real sick with the poops and weak and hardly can walk get him off his dog food and on a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken with boiled carrots before it's too late.
I will never purchase any more product from Purina for any of my animals and neither should you unless you want your family pet dead from food poisoning. How inhumane can they be to actually produce this crap that kills. So sad so very sad.

My American Bulldog Koda passed away Sat. March 1st 2014. I woke up to find her struggling to breathe and she had pooped and peed all over herself and her bed. I rushed her to the emergency care clinic, she stopped breathing on the way there. The doctor tried to get her breathing again to no avail. He told me that she had fluid on her liver and a little bit of blood in her stomach.
I could not afford an autopsy to find out for sure. Then on Sunday night, my other bulldog Kya started having problems, she would not move and I could barely get her to walk around. Later that night, her face swelled up so much that her eyes were about closed. I started to think about the common links between them. They had been separated due to fighting each other (they were both female and now that my second baby was older, I can only think that the battle was over who was the alpha dog) so there were not vary many.
I had started to buy Purina Beneful-Playful life about a month ago and just bought a new bag only a week or two ago. My other half googled and found an article on this brand making dogs sick and worse death due to mold being in the grain. I had taken her to the Vet that morning and gave them the article which had liver failure listed as one of the common problems. They ran some blood work, her liver enzymes were slightly high.
The vet had also said that her eyes were a little yellow. Although, I cannot link anything to the dog food I am convinced that this is the reason my baby died and my other was on her way. Koda was healthy and only two years old and Kya is a little over one year old. I have switched dog foods, currently the vet gave Kya a food to benefit the liver and when she is done with that I will find a better and safe dog food! The FDA needs to get Purina off the shelves!

By Monday I found an enlarge gland in her throat, brought her to the vet. They took an X-ray, blood work and valley fever test, put her on IV and flushed her system.
On Tuesday while waiting for the results of the test I googled Beneful, while reading the first complaint the vet came in and asked if she could have drank antifreeze. I showed her what I just read and said she considered Beneful to be junk food. She proceeded to say Sadie's white count was way too high and her spleen was enlarged. I said that's funny, I was told by my doctor that my white count is way too high and was given antibiotics that I was battling an infection or I may have cancer.
The vet wants an ultra sound and a biopsy of Sadie's spleen. Don't know if I want to proceed because if they burst her spleen she could die. Now I am wondering my Australian Shepard has had stomach issues since she has been a puppy Beneful has been the only food she has had eaten. Changed our dog food right away and threw Beneful away. We have had our dog Jasmine for 8 years now, almost 9. My dog was on the heavier side, our vet suggested we switch her food to a healthy weight kind. The vet didn't not say to buy Beneful, I just went to the store and picked one off the shelf. As soon as we switched she started to throw up, I have always heard dogs get sick from switching food. I was still having her eat the food, hoping her stomach would get used to the switch. She ended up not wanting to eat or drink at all, so we brought her to the vet. The vet did some blood work, then let us know the horrible news. She said her kidneys are failing. We took our dog home with 5 different types of medication.
My dog hasn't been herself, she is always lying around not wanted to get up. She doesn't wag her tail anymore, I can't get her to eat anything. We brought her back to the vet a week later to see if anything changed with the medication. The blood work showed that her kidneys are worse. Came back home with two more medications. I can't believe how quickly this happened. I should have never switched her food. Now that I researched the food, there are so many complaints. How is this food still on the shelves? She now has 2-4 weeks left to live according to the vet. She was healthy and happy until we switched her food. Please don't risk the health of your pet, research your food and where it comes from.

The following was written a week before I had to put my Female Tootsie to sleep and 2 weeks before I had to put my male Tank to sleep. To make a Long story short, read this top section: Do NOT feed your dog BENEFUL dog food PLEASE!!! Do Research!! I believe It is killing my 2 dogs who are both conveniently suffering from kidney failure!! I am so sad I didn't know the thousands of dogs this food has killed sooner!! I feel so bad for harming my sweet pets!!! Please Please Do Research!!!
So I was up late last night not able to sleep because I think I just figured out what is killing my dogs!! I had to deal with my female dog: Tootsie getting very sick about 6 months ago. She first had a seizure that caused her to not eat (for maybe a month or so unless we gave her canned food), not walk (for about a week) and to lose hair like crazy (which she has lost kind of a lot of hair her whole life which I always thought was a bit more than normal for a short haired dog, but now I think I know why). So I brought her to a couple different vets to try and help her get better and she slowly did get back to her normal self for the most part with some vomiting episodes here and there still. Both vets diagnosed her with kidney failure and told me she only has a few months to live. :( I was thinking this was just some fluke thing until my male dog Tank had a hernia that needed repaired about 4 months ago, so we took him in for surgery.
A month after surgery I brought him back to the vet because he wasn't eating and looked skinny. So then the vet told me that He was spilling a lot of protein in his urine and therefore in kidney failure (by the way this is a different vet that diagnosed him with the kidney failure than our female). What are the stinking odds that both dogs go into kidney failure within a year apart from each other?!!! For some reason I haven't researched the food online until now because I've asked the vets if it could be the food and they said there haven't been any recalls for Beneful food since 2005, so I decided not to look it up right away. Tonight Tootsie (my female dog) threw up on the carpet (3rd time throwing up that I have seen in the last 3 days), not eating, she's been shaking like crazy for the last few days, and not been her normally perky self. And then I go into the laundry room to try and feed her some canned food to see if she would eat it and I noticed Tank (my male dog) has hardly any hair along his spine and has a patch or 2 of very thin hair where you can see his skin underneath.
So finally I am like what are the odds that both of my dogs are sick and have similar issues? The only common thing is their Stupid BENEFUL Dog Food that they eat. NEVER Feed your dog this food!!! I did just a little bit of research so far and I can NoT believe how many 1000's of animals have died and gotten super sick on this food!! PLEASE, PLEASE help to get it recalled!! And PLEASE DO NOT FEED THIS TO YOUR PETS!!!!! PLEASE SHARE this post and tell everyone that you know who feeds this to their pets!! It can save 1000's of Animals who are just like members of the family for So many people!! It breaks my heart to think that I was the cause of their pain and medical problems they now have! My male can no longer control his bladder and leaks urine all the time and we have to keep him in the laundry room or outside (what a life :( poor thing!).

I have a small two-year-old mix breed dog that has become very ill eating Beneful. The dog has started to get seizures for no reason. I took him to the hospital one evening and they could not really tell me what was causing the seizures. They got so bad they were happening at least twice a day. I have been very sad and under a lot of stress not knowing what I could do to help my dog. I did some research, and read that it could be his food. I stopped all Beneful a few days ago. My sweet dog has not even had one single seizure. I know the damage has been done for he is no longer the dog he use to be. He appears fearful for minimal stuff and sometimes at night he does not see well. He can handle home cooked meals at this time. He is alive today, but everyday is a sad reminder that something very bad happened to him. I hope that by writing someone hears how sad and helpless I feel.

My 6 year old boxer died within 1 week. She was fine and 1 nite she started chattering her teeth and throwing up white foam all over. Took her to the vet and they told me she was in kidney failure? How can a dog go from healthy to dead in 1 week. She got so sick and the vet told me he couldn't do no more so I brought her home to die. This crap needs taken off the market. Anyone I see with Beneful, I will tell them that the dog food killed my dog. Nuff said, my son had to sit and watch her die?

I have been feeding my 8 year old Rottweiler Synamon Beneful Wet dog food for quite some time. She was throwing up, excessive drinking water, some nights eat everything I gave her, then some nights not eating at all so of course I changed her dry food & not the wet food. Friday 01/17/14 Synamon's right eye starting filling up with blood & went to her left eye & so she went blind. I had taken her to the vet @ Lakeside Animal Hospital on 01/20/14 & they just told me we need to start with blood work for $195.00 to find out what is wrong. But at the same time she told us that we have a couple of issues (but NEVER told us what they were). Just kept repeating we need to do blood work.
So when we took Synamon to Foothills Animal Shelter their vet did a quick exam & said her liver had failed & kidneys were failing. So then we decided to put her down cause we didn't want her to suffer anymore of putting her through tests. But the sad thing is Foothills told us that Lakeside Animal Hospital could of gave us medicine for her liver & maybe would've helped as of 01/20/14. But they just wanted my money & not the care of the dog. So reading other reviews on here their dogs had liver & kidney failure as well. Why is it still on the shelves????? Pissed off...

I am shocked by these negative reviews. I switched my six dogs to Beneful Healthy Weight two years ago because my local Walmart stopped carrying the Dog little bites. They love it! And just last week I gave my 21-year-old dog Misty the Beneful prepared meal for the first time and she went ape over it. I have struggled with her diet the last 8 months, going from Mighty Dog canned food, to Pedigree, back again, then to Science Diet, then seeing her go totally off dog food completely and feeding her baked chicken with rice only to repeat the cycle again. The Beneful prepared food has given her energy like she hasn't had in two years. As I write this, she is not sleeping as usual, she is prancing around the kitchen looking for food and she ate two complete meal packets already today. My vet recommended giving her as much as she could eat at this stage of her life, so I am going to give her another bowl and I am thrilled to do so. In closing, I will say that I've fed all the dogs I've had in my adult life Purina brand foods and they have thrived.

On Tuesday December 17, 2013 I spent the latter portion of the afternoon digging a hole to bury my 4 year old Red Nose Pit Bull. She was an extremely kind and loving animal that was a constant companion to my children. Dunalah spent the last week of her life in misery. She was completely unable to eat, unable to walk, or even stand on her own. She was unable to control her bodily functions and repeatedly messed on herself. The amount of blood involved in those messes was quite disturbing. I was able to get Dunalah in to see a vet who informed me that her internal organs were failing her. She then asked if she could have been poisoned. The answer was no. Dunalah was an inside dog, only going outside with myself or my wife to supervise. We also do not keep any caustic chemicals in the house as we have children. We use vinegar instead of bleach etc.
Then the vet asked me if there was a recent food change. When I replied yes, she became quite interested. I explained that due to a recent injury at work, finances changed and we had to make adjustments. We had been given a bag of Purina Beneful dog food about a week before she got sick. Dunalah died that afternoon. I began doing some research online and googled "Beneful killed my dog" and a plethora of information started to flow. Beneful has been suspect for a long time. I found one consumer report site that had 683 people that logged accounts of their animals getting sick and/or dying after eating Beneful products. These accounts are so prevalent that the Purina Beneful company has a disclaimer about seeing a vet if your dog is sick when you look up their contact info, prompting the question "how many of these calls do they get?"
The company insists that their product is safe, and that the FDA has inspected it and all is A-OK. However, that still leaves hundreds and hundreds of sick and dead animals with no explanation, and one common thread...Beneful! My goal in all this is simple. I want this company held accountable, and I want this poison recalled. I am taking steps to get their product tested in an independent toxicology lab, and I am reaching out to any affected to join my is raising awareness and a public outcry.
I will post more info as facts on this matter get unearthed. I will also set up contact email for all bereaved and those who want to help. Meanwhile we can all post relevant info on social media under #boycottbeneful to keep it organized and to trend the hashtag to raise awareness. Stay tuned for more on this and thank you so very much for your help. I LOVE YOU ALL!

I recently took my 7 month old German shepherd to vet with symptoms of vomiting, excessive drinking, lethargic, weight loss, no appetite, diarrhea, after feeding him Beneful puppy food. I also have a 6 month old German shepherd started showing same signs after feeding Beneful puppy. I got them to vet just in time. Vet said any longer they could have died. If Beneful would have recalled their food my dogs wouldn't have gotten sick. I wouldn't have a high vet bill. I love my dogs like they are my kids. This highly upsets me. How many more have to die or become ill before you do the right thing and recall this poisonous food?

A couple of years ago, I started buying Beneful dog food for my little Pomeranians. Before I bought the food, I had healthy, happy critters who were feisty, sweet and healthy. Not long after the switch from homemade food to Beneful, Daisy started having massive seizures. Tesser, our younger pup, has also had several seizures. The seizures would last for a week or so, culminating in up to ten grand mal seizures a day. Daisy's coat was dry, brittle and looked unkempt, even though she's bathed at least weekly. We don't use any harsh cleaning products, we make our own from citrus and vinegar.
The dogs are part of our family, we watch over them like hawks. They're our best friends and companions. We kept feeding her Beneful because I thought I was an informed consumer. I never would buy dog food or treats from China because I was afraid of them getting sick. I never in my life believed that Purina, a brand I've trusted and used forever would lie to me and put profits ahead of our friends. We believed in you, Purina.
About a year after Daisy started getting sick, we adopted a little Norfolk Terrier named Carlo. Carlo lived with us for awhile until he passed. One day I came home from work and he was very sick. I don't know if he was poisoned by the food in the manner that I've heard of from several people I know, but the symptoms are similar. He ate so much of the Beneful, he was a little insecure and had been through a lot by being in the pound and away from his original owners. He would eat until we took the food from him, and sometimes my kids would forget.
The day he got sick he had been eating Beneful. It took about 12 hours for his system to shut down completely. He passed quickly and painfully and it destroyed my three children. But we kept feeding Daisy and TesserAct Beneful until recently when I ran across a couple of articles. What bothers me the most is that Purina/Nestle/Beneful is touting their product as healthy but it's been proven that many animals have passed because of this product. Our animals are our friends, our companions and we trusted Nestle/Purina to tell us the truth. I will not be buying any more of your products, and will do my best to avoid Nestle products as well. You should at the least issue a recall. People are burying their friends right before Xmas. It's sad to see such a trusted company be so shadowy.

I had a beloved runt of the litter shih tzu who was just over one year old when she had, what the vet told me, unexpected kidney failure. I was in shock. I had a new baby and chalked it up to everything circumstantial, except her food!!! In retrospect it is so clear to me. We had to switch her food because they were out of her normal Royal Canin diet, so we purchased this "trusted" brand at the supermarket. I was a newer dog owner and switching her diet suddenly is one of the things I did wrong and will forever regret.
Within a month my hubby was saying how skinny she was. I made excuses because I just thought it was because we had her shaved, now looking back at pictures I can see. She began vomiting up food and barely eating within two weeks. She had severe abdominal pains and within the next week had bloody diarrhea. I immediately took her to the vet. The vet told me she was severely dehydrated and that it was probably the diet change and to go home and feed her a bland diet. She stopped eating and drinking completely within the day but still was vomiting and diarrhea.
I had to leave on a trip and leave her with my husband. He came home from work and said she hadn't moved the whole day, touched her food or water. He immediately took her to the doggy er where they said she was suffering from kidney failure and in utter misery. He took her home and we had to put her down the next day. I wasn't even able to be with my baby at this horrible time or tell her goodbye. This all happened within Friday to Sunday!!! I was out of town for three days!!!! Please, do not feed your dang this food! She was healthy and happy before we switched to this brand of food!! I will never forgive myself.

I adopted a 7-mo Lab puppy. I got her the "happy healthy" Beneful puppy food because of what it promoted. Over the next week: She started with itchy ears. So I cleaned them. Then her body seemed to be itchy. So I bathed her and checked for fleas. Then her breath smelled like metal. So I got her dental bones. Then her eye was red and swollen. So I put a compress on. Couple hours later her whole body had huge, I mean massive, hives all over her poor body. She was crying and uncomfortable, but personality was still pretty normal. Gave her 50mg of Benadryl. Over the next few days we eliminated everything down to her food. And during that time we were still giving Benadryl.
We just got her new food (Blue Wilderness or something) and haven't given Benadryl in 24 hours and she seems so much better. I have been reading horrible things on Beneful. On one side, my parents feed their dogs Beneful and they seem to be fine. But my dog clearly was not okay. And what I read from these other posts is that their dogs aren't okay. If a product had, with a more positive look, 50/50 of healthy dogs vs not healthy dogs rate... Wouldn't you be concerned? I wish a petition would start.
Beneful should just take a step back, look what's happening with some of their consumers and fix the problem. Maybe make a special bag that doesn't contain all of the bad stuff they put in. All I know is I am glad my Lucy (yes, I know, cute name) is okay. I feel bad that I gave her Beneful because I feel like it's my fault she was sick! At least we know now. So to any consumers looking to buy Beneful, just make sure you have Benadryl and know the correct dosage you can give your dog. You might need it.

My husband and I have a beautiful 7-y/o Jack Russell Chihuahua that has been eating Beneful since day one. We have spent over $3000 to watch our sweet boy fall apart. At first we started accusing the breeder for giving us a dog with problems but then it came down to we were the only family that was giving him Beneful out of the nine pups. His mouth has been rotting out and we do everything down to brushing his teeth every day. We only give him the same water that we drink... Only the best Poland Spring water. He can't even eat, and just last week we had him in the vet to have his teeth removed but left with no operation because he is too weak and has a bad heart as well as kidneys.
Somebody at Purina is gonna have to open up their pockets and dig deep to redeem themselves for everyone's loss in behalf of their Beneul product that is clearly the reason for all these upsetting stories. The good news is that at least he can smell the good food WE'RE eating. God bless us all, respect and enjoy the time that we do have.
