Spooky, an 8 year old mix, is currently in the hospital undergoing various tests and stabilizing her blood sugar levels. She has been healthy all her life, then suddenly she's dropping drastic weight and throwing up. At first I thought it was just all the exercise of running through snow piles while I shovel then getting over-heated or eating something inappropriate in a snow pile. Within 72 hours she's hooked up to an IV and I'm hoping to have her home Friday. My vet was stunned she tested positive for diabetes as her annual check-up is in May and all this time, she's been aces. I get home, feeling lost and sick myself and see the news about Beneful....I still have the bag in my closet. It was a "treat" to break-up the monotony of the normal Purina Dog Chow I've fed my dogs forever. My vet cannot confirm this is related but I can't believe it wouldn't be.

How does a healthy dog suddenly go from healthy, crazy energy to too close to death that I can't consider it? The endocrine system includes the liver, kidneys, pancreas and lymph nodes; Spooky may be "special" that her kidneys haven't failed but being a sudden diabetic, this is her future. The needle-phobic owner will now have to suck-it-up and give my girl the necessary insulin twice a day until her last day on Earth. I'm both pissed and sickened that I did this by feeding her, what I thought, would be a nice change of pace. Once I get Spooky home, I'll take Voodoo in to make sure her liver and kidney functions are up to snuff; she's just a bit over a year old so being younger, but large breed mix too, helps her odds, I'm sure.

I began to feed my dog (Max) who was only 5 years old Beneful weight control dry food. I began to feed him this because he was overweight. He began to lose a lot of weight so I thought he was doing good. He however began having accidents in the house and was constantly drinking water. And within a matter of 2 days he was refusing to eat, vomiting, had diarrhea and couldn't walk.

I took him to the vet and they told me that they were concerned he had gotten into something like antifreeze or something, however Max didn't have access to anything like that. The vet told me that his kidneys were failing and that they were going to hook him up to an IV and try to stabilize him. I later got a phone call telling me that he had passed away. I had no idea about issues with the food and now feel like the company took my dog from me!

My 7yr old mixed dog has gotten sick like every other day. He has bladder stones so he is also on urinary prescription dog food. I would switch every other day and it just dawned on me the other night when he barfed that he is probably getting sick from the Beneful dog food so I stopped & he is feeling a lil better. He too would drink a lot of water and would pee in the house. My daughter just found this website and told me to read it & to throw his dog food out. If it's so bad why on earth are people not told this and why is it still sold in stores. He was also peeing a lil blood and the vet thought it might be from his stones but maybe it was also from the dog food.

Our 10 yr old yorkie Poo became very sick end of Dec. 2014, he was throwing up blood, sleeping. Got to the point he could not walk. Went to vet, after 350.00 costs, the only thing they came up with was a bleeding ulcer. It is 2 months, he still not eating dry dog food. Had to carry him for a month for outside visits, just could not stand up. We were making plans for him dying. Now we know it was the dog food. He is not back to normal, still walks on 3 legs, no reason, no injury. If we can get some money back to cover the vets bills, that would be great. LET me know.

Our Chesapeake Bay retriever became very ill last summer. She had been eating Beneful dog food for some time and she began vomiting up a lot and got a very large sore in her mouth. The vet could not figure out what was going on after taking x-rays and other misc tests on her. He gave us a few different medications hoping it would help. Lastly, he suggested we may just switch up her food to see if that would do it since the tests didn't find anything. That vet bill was almost $1,000 which is ridiculous. Good news is she's better now and immediately stopped vomiting after we switched her food. When I saw the story on the news this morning I finally made the connection and now I KNOW it was because of Beneful. It may be cheaper than the expensive food our dog is eating now but it's beyond worth it! Purina owes us money for that vet bill.

We have fed our 3 dogs Purina Beneful dog food for years. All 3 of them would experience vomiting and diarrhea at different times. Then our shih tzu became ill out of the blue last summer. We noticed she was rapidly losing weight but consumed large amounts of water. She had developed eye infections and had no energy. We contacted our vet and he diagnosed her with diabetes. She lost sight in both eyes within weeks. She declined in health so rapidly we finally had her put down. Our other pets vomit quite often still. We are taking them off this food immediately. My mom uses the same products as well. One of her dogs refuses to eat this brand and the other that does is ill with vomiting and diarrhea several times a week. I tried to contact the Purina company last year about my lawn dying everywhere the dogs' feces was or had been. I was never able to get through to anyone.

Took him to the vet they said he had stomach problems and tumors which came out of the blue very sudden. I had to have him put to sleep he was in such pain. Our Doberman Pinscher passed away on Jan. 30, 2015. We took him to the Vet in to have a tumor removed at this anal gland and to get his teeth cleaned in April 21, 2014. He came through fine at the time of surgery, they did a complete blood panel and everything was fine. He was happy and healthy and he had ate Beneful most of his life. He had 2 urine accidents in the house in July 2014. He has not had an accident in the house since he was 12 weeks old. Took him to vet, they ran all kinds of blood work, sonogram and could not find anything wrong. He started losing weight at the same time. The vet put him on steroids and he still lost weight.

We were giving him liver in morning, fish at lunch plus he ate 3 big bowls of Beneful a day. All of the extra food was okayed by his vet. He had 2 more urine accidents in the house in Jan 2015. He just wasted away to nothing. He had loose stool, and green nasal discharge and very itchy skin - he did not have fleas. The vet did a fecal exam the week before he died and they found nothing. Sorry for the typos. We are still not done grieving for him. The picture of him standing was took in Nov. 2014. The other 3 were took before he started losing weight. I do have some proof of purchase plus I had contact with them about the dog food a few years back about the soft pieces being hard.

We have three dogs. About two years ago we switched to Beneful because store did not have the food they had been on for years. Within a few weeks our Chocolate lab had to be hospitalized for pancreatitis. We were able to nurse her back to health after hospital stay and a list of strict instructions for home. A couple months later she had to be rushed back to vet and have emergency surgery to remove her spleen. Another close call. She also had to have surgery to remove 3 large lumps removed from her midsection after everything else she had been through.

We also have a cocker spaniel mix that started having seizures and lost his hearing. His hair stopped growing on his back and became very bristly. He eats the same amount as our terrier mix. However he has had consistent weight loss over the last few months. Our terrier mix also had seizures, weight gain and a very large tumor on his hind quarters. The tumor had to be removed surgically. He continues to have seizures, has bouts of diarrhea and has accidents in the house that happen more frequently.

He got really sick a few months ago and the vet said that he had an issue with his liver and also thought he may have eaten something poisonous like a mushroom. Has been on medication for his liver for months. All of these symptoms and issues started after they started eating Beneful Weight Control. Our dogs are seen by the vet regularly and she has never been able to pin point why these things are happening. Considering all the things I have read from other dog owners I believe the Beneful food may be the cause.

From day one we started feeding our black lab 'Buddy' Beneful dog food. He seemed healthy until he was 2 years old and had a urinary tract infection. The vet said it was most likely caused from the Nyla bones so we stopped giving him them. After he recovered, 6 months later he started having diarrhea and vomiting. The vet said it could be because he got in the trash and to keep an eye on him. The vomiting stopped, but not the diarrhea. The vet said to change his food to Iams and he was much better and became over weight. The Iams got expensive after awhile and we decided to buy the new Beneful for Healthy Weight Formula. Buddy had diarrhea again but the vet said it was because he had to get used to the change in food. After a week Buddy was back to normal again.

Then about 6 months later Buddy started getting the same symptoms all over again except he wasn't eating, losing a lot of weight at once, and his eyes were yellowish and draining a thick mucus. I took him to the vet again and they said it would be $1500 to run tests on him but we didn't have the money, so I took him to the Humane Society to see if they could help. They ruled out parvovirus and basically told us he had liver failure due to poisoning. They said they could try to save him for $1800 but he was so far along that they suggested putting him down.

It was a very sad day to have say goodbye to Buddy. We had just lost our house and couldn't afford to at least try and save him and my kids didn't understand at the time. Our son decided to get another dog when he moved out, but had to move back in with his dog. He named it Buddy, but it was too painful to have another dog named Buddy, so we named him Capone. We fed him the same Beneful for puppies. He was healthy until he turned 2. He isn't sick but he has a rash on his stomach that isn't going away, and he stopped eating. He lives with my daughter now and she said she changed his food but he still has the rash. I've been telling her to take him to the vet but she hasn't yet.

My sweet little Snuggles - Schlitz and Poodle mix, is the light of my life. He has been throwing up for some time and as time went by he would throw up more often. For ex. three times a week then lately two and three times per day. This really scared me! I never had a dog before so I thought it was normal and when I asked my ex vet she said it was not unusual for dogs to puke. I should have had a second opinion then had I known about Beneful Pet Food.

This was becoming frightening and it was worrying me. As time went by he was just not himself and I knew something was wrong. I took Snuggles to the vet a few weeks ago and they told me he now have a kidney problems which he never had before. Needless to say I was stunned. They gave him antibiotics, a shot and he has to drink lots of water daily which means more walks and cleanups. Snuggles' vet and I now monitor his kidneys very closely. I take him to his vet every two weeks since this has happened to ensure his kidney condition improves, so far not much changed.

The Vet said she needed surgery, I could not afford. I took her home but she only got worse - clearly in a lot of pain. It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make! Once I started reading some of these comments I honestly believe this had something to do with Beneful Pet Food.

I purchased by beautiful black and red haired german shepherd in 2007 from a very reputable breeder. At the age of 10 weeks, we wanted a strong, beautiful healthy and happy dog. We immediately were drawn to Beneful dog food and began feeding our beautiful dog this food. In the next couple of months she began losing her hair and having ulcerations on her skin. She look horrible and cried everyday. We took her to multiple doctors and eventually to an allergist. Multiple medications were tried but unsuccessfully.

At the age of 2, she began having increasing amount of stomach problems and on one occasion vomited blood and dog food onto our carpet. We immediately went for a full panel of allergy testing and the testing results came back that she had allergies to many ingredients in the food she was eating. LUCKILY, we decided to give her a more natural dog food and within one month she began growing back her hair and feeling better.

She continues to suffer with ear canal issues, as a result of the ulcerations on her ears and ear canal. She continues to cry and needs medications twice daily to control the pain. This is permanent damage. I feel very guilty for feeding my once beautiful dog this dog food. I know that her pain and suffering is caused from this dog food, and is now permanent. Please consumers, do not buy this dog food.

Morning, I am seeing all over the news that there's been traces of poisons found in the Beneful's dog food. I fed my dog "Khaleesi" this food back in August of 2014. I purchased because of a sale at ShopRite along w/ manufacturers coupons I had. Well, I am now wondering if this poisoning issue that is all over the news could possibly be the cause of a serious medical episode we had with her where we almost lost her! Going back in my records, on August 30th, 2014 I was complaining of loose stools w/ a trace of blood and vomiting. On September 2nd 2014, I came home from work, fed her Beneful and approximately a half hour later she began seizing, losing all of her bodily fluid uncontrollably, all while unable to walk, unable to even hold her head up.

Rushed her to a clinic/shelter for help, where they kept her overnight but stated they didn't think she was going to survive the night having continuous seizures after seizure. They were certain that she would be put to sleep throughout the night, as she was seizing, showing signs of brain damage, unable to hold her head up or even walk. September 3rd 2014, both my husband and myself called out of work - reason of absence: death of puppy! Later afternoon on 9/03/14, we received a call from the shelter/clinic stating Khalessi is up playing as if nothing has even happened - they said it was a miracle. A miracle she is not even showing signs of brain damage and she was a complete different dog from the sick puppy that was brought in the prior evening. Amazing!!! Though, the cause was a mystery! We had extensive degrees of blood test, etc. to try to help find the cause of what had happened to her, but no explanation was found.

We immediately stop her on anything that we were giving her in and around that time frame, not knowing if something we were giving her caused this to happen to her. This caused her to have a delay in her shots and a delay in having her spayed, as the doctors/vets were afraid not knowing if she would seize again while having surgery. Though, after stopping all things given including Beneful, there was/has not been another incident and our baby is perfectly healthy, TG! Vets say it something odd/freak that happened that they have no explanation for. After now seeing the news, I believe that the food may have been the cause of this horrific episode that caused us to come VERY close to losing our puppy. This is crazy! We are very lucky she is still w/ us!!!

I will be trying to pull my store receipts with ShopRite for the purchase of this food in the time frame of the episode and reviewing all vet docs to research this further. I am sorry for anyone who has lost a pet over this, we were one of the fortunate ones. Though this caused much heart-wrenching grief and much worrying that we would face this trouble w/ her again, thankfully we have had no further issues - though, we no longer feed her this food.

When he was approximately 2 y/o he began developing stomach issues, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. Each time he was taken to the vet and I was told to withhold food for a day or 2 and resume. This continued sporadically for the next 6 years. The final onset resulted in hospitalization, lots of meds, and finally surgery in which it was determined that he had a very large mass in his pancreas, one like the vet stated he had never seen. The result was death. Needless to say, my husband and I were devastated. After seeing this today, it upsets me more to think this all could have been avoided.

We adopted our puppy, Lily, in 2009 at the time she was only 3 months old. We immediately fed her Beneful puppy food and fed her Beneful brand until around 2013. Lily had seizures during this time, once so severe she had to be hospitalized for 3 days and they said she wouldn't make it... they told us she had ingested something poisonous. We tried to tell them we had been with her and she hadn't eaten anything abnormal only her dog food. Lily managed to pull through, but shortly after continued having seizures again.

The vets have been stumped, and not really sure what has been causing them without extensive tests. In 2013 we decided to switch to an organic specialty dog food - Sure it was more expensive, but we decided to give it a try. I can say that since then she has only had 1 seizure... an almost two year span... only one. The vet was stunned and although not sure why stopping the food helped her - urged us to continue. Beneful, like our vet likes to say, is like feeding your dog McDonald's everyday - If you wouldn't feed your kids that way please I urge you not to feed your dogs that way. I believe that Beneful is the culprit of our dog's many seizures and ailments. So thankful that we switched when we did and that our little lady is doing much better!

We lost our family dog last September. Loretta was a rescue and we had her for about 5 years. She was only about 7 years old when she got sick. We had no clue what was happening to her and neither did the vet. She became very lethargic, lost control of her bladder and became very confused and disoriented. Her eyes were glazed over with her third eyelid staying shut. I took her to the vet and they thought she had some kind of virus. Took her home only to take her to the emergency vet that weekend (2-3 days later). She had been up all night moaning and crying. Once I got there, they immediately put her on oxygen, started an IV and told me they did not know what was wrong.

They told me that they did not think they could save her and even if they did they thought she would have some serious neurological issues. After much consideration and seeing her suffer, we decided to have her put to sleep. My daughter just told me about the concerns with Beneful dog food. Beneful is what we fed Loretta and currently feed our dog Lovey. I cannot begin to describe how very sickened I am to find out about all these effects Beneful is likely the cause of. Our dogs are our members of our family.

In the last two years, three of my dogs have had serious health problems. Two of my dogs developed tumors on their spleens and required emergency surgery. One of the two passed away after the surgery. The vet said this issue was uncommon, especially in two dogs in the same home who were not litter mates. Another one of my dogs has had a declining appetite, has lost twenty pounds and has kidney failure, with only 25% of her kidney function left. She is on medication, which she won't take because she doesn't have an appetite, which leaves us having to force pills down her throat two times per day. She is also on fluids, which we have to give her twice per day via IV. I've often wondered what is making my dogs sick and have questioned whether or not it could be their food. My dogs have gone through so much in the past two years: countless vet visits and check-up's, pills, needles, surgeries, special food, IV's, etc. Not to mention all the pain and suffering they've had to endure.

I always suspected that it could be related to the food but the vets never confirmed it. After reading so many similar stories I am convinced it was Beneful that killed my dog.

We have a 2 yr old Chiweenie named Sadie who has been eating Beneful dog food for the last year. She is always sick and we have not been able to figure out what her issue was. Was she eating thing in the backyard? We weren't sure so we stopped letting her go out back. Was she licking up grease on the kitchen floor when we cook dinner? We weren't sure, so we make sure she never goes in the kitchen. Every week she has "stomach issues". She gets lethargic and doesn't want to eat and then has bad diarrhea for a few days. We took her to the vet twice and she was placed on Flagyl for her tummy issues. They ran blood tests and said she had a stomach virus and that it was normal for small dogs.

Well she gets sick every single week now and I am terribly concerned that it is because of the food she has been eating. We saw the news last night about Beneful dog food poisoning pets and I was shocked!! That's exactly what we food Sadie!! Have we been unknowingly killing our beloved pet? We immediately threw out all the dog food in her bowls (kept the bag for testing in case it's needed). I do not know if the damage has already been done to her little body since she has been eating the dog food for over a year now. I pray that we have not caused her too much damage. My husband just heard about this today. I don't know if I'm contacting the correct person but here's my story. We had 11.5 year old mixed bread who was healthy most of her life until February of this year. She was vomiting and shaking almost every day. We took her to an emergency vet and after blood work was done, we were advised she had some sort of inflammation. She had eaten Beneful wet and dry food since it came on the market. In September we brought her to our vet for her yearly check up and were told that she had lost 5 lbs. (10% of her weight). We attributed that to that we had stopped giving her table straps.

October 2014 she slowed down eating her dry Beneful and on December 4, 2014 she refused her wet Beneful. We spent $5,000.00 trying to find out what was wrong with her. The day she died (not assisted) we find out she did not have cancer and they did not know what was causing these symptoms. Reading this today we see that she had most of the symptoms listed in the class action suit. Thickening of the stomach and liver malfunction vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration and weight loss. The last 10 days of her life we feed her hamburger or chicken and rice when we could coax her to eat.

Two days before he passed we noticed a difference in him. He was lethargic, wanted little to do with our other dog who he used to pick on endlessly and he wouldn't eat. Not even a bite. I even made beef and rice boiled for him with water. Something plain and one of his favs. No luck.

So the day he died Mira (my partner) worked and I was meeting a friend. I had decided when I got home if he was no different a vet visit was in order. When we got home that night we walked into the kitchen and there was vomit and grainy watery excrement all over the kitchen!!!! I am talking way too much! I saw my Boston Terrier looking very upset sitting by the living room. As I walk into the living room, my 5 lb chihuahua is lying in his bed and didn't move when we came in. I touched him and he was cold. My dog had died!!!

I know he was old, and I am sure it was a factor but he was fine and then he was gone. The only food he ate was Beneful Small Bites cause he could still chew them. If they have something in their food that is causing this to happen to dogs they must be stopped! He was my friend for 16 years and his loss still hurts my heart. I want to make sure that if the food is a factor that they are held accountable and make changes. Protect our loved ones!!! I have no purchase proof or photos of my dogs demise. My dog's symptoms were so classic to this case it can only be the food + LOOK AT BEFEFUL'S INGREDIENT LIST! I feel so stupid--the bag announces '...With Real Beef' on the front. Did anyone else NOT NOTICE the almost hidden ingredient list, where beef is 7th in line, two behind 'animal fat', just three ahead of 'propylene glycol' (an ingredient in antifreeze) and four ahead of 'sugar'? Yes, sugar. What is THAT doing in a dog food? And THOSE nasty ingredients are EIGHT ingredients ahead (by weight) of the spinach, peas, and carrots shown so boldly on the front! If Purina can mislead us so blatantly on the front of every package, do you think they tell the truth in prepared statements????

--Fiona's story: My five year old American Bully was getting allergies to Canidae (which my daughter recommended to me) so, STUPIDLY, I bought one bag of Beneful because it was on sale. Fiona loved it! I think the sugar and fat make it yummy like junk food to kids. I had been feeding it for a week or so when I was awakened to her drinking at night...never happened before. She seemed to drink FOREVER. Now paying more attention, I noticed she was drinking longer, peeing more and more often--barely out of the gate before she had to squat, and peeing two or three times on a walk. Her corner of the yard was becoming flooded. I mentioned it to my daughter, a nursing student, who warned me this was serious and advised me to start by changing her food immediately. I read the label, noticed the sugar, and wondered about diabetes. Of course I quit the Beneful, switched to a high protein Taste of the Wild...and voila, Fiona is right back to normal...a potentially happy ending for us (I hope there was no permanent damage) ONLY because I had an intelligent, informed person advising me RIGHT AWAY.

--Bottom line for me: Purina is so enormous. You can bet they are unlikely to be made to 'fess up if every dog eating Beneful in America got sick (probably happening now). The NERVE they have announcing Beneful as 'HEALTHY' in all their promotions, when it so clearly is NOT HEALTHY in any way, is breathtaking to me. That they continue to market it that way, KNOWING it is harming dogs, and has been for years, makes me nauseated. Big business at it's finest. LOVE YOUR DOGS AND READ EVERY LABEL!!!!

She loves it, though within the past month she has lost her ability to jump onto the couch/chair/bed etc. And has also been very lethargic. Though there are many things that could've caused this, it didn't occur until she started wanting to eat the dry food for her meals instead of what I would make.

Jamie is also slowly losing her ability to control her bladder, and has had bouts of vomiting (somewhat like withdrawals) if she doesn't eat the Beneful product. Also has recently gotten a horrific rash on her lower back and hind quarters and wants to drink water like she's been in the desert for days.. I have no funds to take her to the vet, and no funds to go about this legally, but she is exhibiting quite a few symptoms of other beloved pets I have seen on here, and wanted to share in case this helps or I can be helped. Please keep these pets in your prayers, and these symptoms come about quicker than you'd expect. Makes me wonder how long I have really been poisoning my pet.

Our dog, Pepper, a Rottweiler/Chow mix, died on Father's Day, 2012. He had been fed various Beneful products since he was a puppy. Months prior to his death, he started displaying serious weight loss and loss of muscle definition, and daily bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. He became very lethargic and could no longer climb the stairs in the house - something he used to relish and attack with boundless energy. His vet confirmed that he in fact had liver disease. I had heard the rumblings about the Beneful products and subsequently changed his diet. But it was much too late.

December 2014, our 8 pound dog had these exact symptoms and died even though she was treated at the Vet's twice, there was nothing more that could be done for her. I was just at our Vet's with our 2nd dog 14 hours before reading this article, as she was behaving exactly the same as our first dog that died with vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and anorexia symptoms. Second dog has a very inflamed stomach lining and the Dr. said she must have eaten something bad for her but we would probably not ever know what it was. I have fed our dogs Beneful only, with an occasional healthy Dr. approved table scrap, for years due to the claims on the bag saying how great their food is for the health of your loved pet. Hopefully we caught this in time for our second dog.

The beginning of July 2014, I switched to Purina Beneful Dog Food. I have 2 dogs that have always been in perfect health. Tank and Abby. Tank was diagnosed as diabetic Jan. 7th, 2015. My dogs go to the vet regularly and stay up on their shots. It crossed my mind that it might be due to the change of food, as that was the only thing that I have changed for him. He now has full blown diabetic. He has lost 35 lbs, is completely blind and can't hardly walk now.

My dogs have always been on Science Diet and I'm switching them back. I don't know that it will save Tank but I have lots of documentations as to his condition since starting them on Beneful. I just want you to be aware of this, maybe it will keep other dogs from going through this. Very sad! Beneful needs to be recalled and removed from the shelves!

My daughter had recently moved back home with a dog I gave her (pekingese) and I noticed he had an awful smell and shed tremendously (neither of which he did when I had him). She told me "I think it's his food doing that to him." She was feeding him Beneful, so I said "well let's change his food and see what happens." We began giving the pekingese the food I was feeding my puppy (boston terrier) and I gave my puppy the Beneful. HUGE mistake...

Within days of giving my puppy-- the Beneful-- she began shedding excessively, and being a short hair dog she doesn't have much fur to begin with! Other things I noticed were she was drinking excessive amounts of water, not gaining any weight (in fact losing weight to the point I could see her ribs) yet her stomach was bloated. Eventually she lost the use of one of her legs, she would not walk on it at all and limped everywhere.

Once this happened I immediately took her off of the Beneful and we began feeding BOTH dogs the food I was originally feeding my puppy. Both dogs are looking much better, my puppy (boston terrier) is completely back to normal to my relief; however, although the pekingese is not losing fur like crazy anymore and no longer has a horrid odor, I believe he has irreversible damage due to eating Beneful for so long. I'm just glad we were able to save him... unfortunately the pekingese I had before was not so lucky!

My 6 year old border collie started having violent diarrhea about a month and half ago. She had only been eating Beneful for about a year at this point, so I didn't think it had anything to do with the food. I took her to the vet, who said he believed this to be a viral issue and prescribed us antibiotics, B12 vitamin weekly, and prescription dog food which she's been on since.

He noted that she had liquid in her abdomen, which seemed to be causing severe protein loss (to the point you could feel her spine and shoulders). After $1200 in vet visits, tests, food, and her suffering, a friend sent me a link about this Beneful lawsuit. Forget the money at this point, I am lucky to have caught this early enough with my pet. There needs to be retribution for the pet owners who have lost their animals.

My father-in-law was expecting a physical therapist to arrive, so Jackson was put into the office until the nurse left. He whined and cried like usual as he likes to be with my father-in-law. In December, I noticed that our dog, a 4 year old Blue Heeler/Australian Cattlehound, who usually wolfs down two cups in the morning and same in the evening, was suddenly going to his bowl and just sniffing at the food. He'd eat a couple mouthfuls and then walk away. We'd have to coax him to eat. Then he'd take all day. I bought a 2nd bag, and it just got worse. He lost weight but seemed to want to eat, and would readily eat any scraps we gave him. I finally realized it was his food and threw away the rest of the bag, then put him back on Rachel Ray's food, and it was a complete turn around. I never dreamed or thought of to research if other dogs were having the same experience with this food. I just thought it was a bad couple of bags. I will be getting my dog to the vet asap.

Honey started peeing throughout the house. Just seemed to lose control of her bladder. Previously the vets at Purdue Univ. removed a mass from her liver. We thought she would get better, although they did not test for poison or mold or what caused the mass. She never really recovered and never was able to hold her urine. She was completely unaware that she was wetting. Yes, she also had uncontrollable thirst. It was scary.

Late Feb. 7th she went out for awhile. I watched her on the cameras. She was lying in unfamiliar place and then she went to her favorite place to lie down and she never got back up. I had my husband go out and see why she was not moving. She was dead. We thought she just had a heart attack or something very weird. We did not know about a problem with Beneful. We bought our food at Sams; the 40 # bag. We can probably find the receipt, but no longer have the actual bag. It was just a little over a year ago. We had her cremated and have her ashes in a special urn. It never occurred to us that it could be her food. Where can we find more (exact) information if it has truly been discovered what the problem is with the dry food? Thanks for the warning as we now have a Honeydew that warms our hearts.

We used Beneful for many years. Bandit was our first to use it and he became lazy early on but we never really made a connection to that being the reason. Years later we moved to Tennessee in 07 and stayed with family for a long time. My dad had two dogs and I just had Bandit and while they ate various foods because we liked different things for the dogs, Beneful was always around. When we bought this house from my family, Missy left with dad and we kept Canyon with Bandit because they loved each other so much.

Four years ago shortly after they moved to a new home, Missy, a beautiful 14 year old lab mix died from a painful liver issue. Last year in February, we lost our sweet and loving Canyon to multiple organ failure with her kidneys and liver being prime in the process. She became sick and died so fast we could not help her. At first she seemed as if she had a cold like pneumonia or something strange. She was very lethargic and drank so much water. We thought she would bust until all of the sudden she stopped eating and drinking. We took her to the vet right away the next day (after cold symptoms began and she stopped eating and drinking suddenly after two days of chronic thirst) when they opened and they ran blood work and started antibiotics hoping it would help but to know for sure blood work results were needed.

We brought her home hoping but she passed away in our arms less than 10 hours later. She was 11 years old and such a happy and sweet dog that loved and protected her family. The blood work came back to say she might have been poisoned. The first thing our vet asked was if she had been exposed to antifreeze. She had not - it was impossible! We compared this to Missy right away but would have never thought about the food because Bandit seemed so much healthier during that point in time. Bandit had some bad health issues beginning in his older age as well now, so in 2013 we changed his and Canyon’s food.

It was too late for her but Bandit is improving. His liver enzyme from a recent test is starting to raise though which worries us. He also has a tumor being removed next month from his chest that has developed over the last two years and was originally thought to have started as a cyst. What are the chances that all three of these animals would have such similar issues with rising liver enzymes?

Bandit has more energy now and chases after younger pups keeping them in line like a parent. He is happier than we have seen him in a long time and the improvements are amazing. There were also many instances of upset stomachs and diarrhea between the three animals over the years, we often assumed they got into the garbage or got something from the kids! When Bandit was younger he had chronic seizures as well. Now he no longer has them. As a matter of fact, we have not viewed or seen an episode in a little more than two years now which also runs in line with discontinuing Beneful. I was surprised at how much Bandit’s health has improved since he is now 14, but after seeing this claim and watching the other two animals die like they did of similar issues when they ate the same food even if it is for less years, I have to worry that it may have also been the cause of their woes.

I won't be using Beneful again. I may even decide to stop using Purina completely now that we have seen this claim. Who can honestly take the chance if they simply want to pass the buck elsewhere instead of being concerned something might have happened. We have two beautiful smaller additions now and I cannot watch what happened to Canyon or Missy happen to them. I just cannot take the chance when others are reporting the same things in their animals. Coincidence only occurs for so long before eventually you have to deal with serious possibility. You would think until they knew for sure it would be removed from shelves! These may be animals instead of humans, but they are part of people’s families. If there was a possibility of tainted meat or vegetables it would be yanked from the shelves the same day it was discovered for human consumption!

I understand wanting to defend your product, but until you can be sure with so many reports of the same problems why would they take a chance? Seems very irresponsible! After reading this information the last few hours and seeing so many similar stories, I am incredibly angry this has taken so long to come to light! Maybe Vets should step in and log all animal deaths and foods they ate the most. I would venture to say that would answer many questions in time if this gets ignored. I will be discussing this without vet when Bandit has his surgery. I want this noted in his file and added to Canyon’s if they still have it.

In July 2014 I moved to a small town where there wasn't any high quality dog food available. I drove 35 miles one-way to buy good dog food. For several weeks I wasn't able to get out of town to buy food, so I bought Beneful at the local grocery, thinking it was the best of what they had. My five dogs ate more of it than other food, and I figured they liked it. In fact, their craving was so intense, I began to wonder if there was an addictive ingredient in it.

My 100# Great Dane mix slowly stopped eating over a several week time period and this was very unusual. He began to lose weight, and I noticed that he'd lost 4" around the neck when I put his collar on him. He had unusual rectangular bleeding lesions around his head, neck and along the spine, and these would close up with a thick whitish crust that could not be picked off. The lesions didn't improve with hydrogen peroxide or antibacterial or antiviral herbs. He developed a bad odor. I began feeding him real food of rice, chicken, carrots and other vegetables. Often he wouldn't finish the real food.

One day I was gone for two hours, and when I returned he was near a comatose state. His tongue was deep blue from oxygen starvation, and he had deep rattly breathing with copious amounts of mucous coming out of his nose. These were new symptoms that developed in the few hours I was away. I frantically researched his symptoms online and determined it was a fungus.

At the time I was unaware of the fungal ingredient in Beneful. I treated him intensely every two hours by infusing with a baby syringe over the next twelve hours, using a tea of anti-fungal herbs (Turmeric, Goldenseal), antibacterial (Echinacea and Yarrow), for the lungs (Yarrow), for the digestive system (Dandelion) and a nutritive/alternative/expectorant/rejuvenative (Fenugreek). Note: Yarrow is also a hemostatic and is for liver function. Dandelion also cleans the liver and the blood. I fed him only real food for the next two weeks with the above herbs mixed in, and then put him back on a high quality dog food and continued giving Turmeric and Dandelion in real meat.

The four other dogs had lesser symptoms of occasional not eating, bloating, diarrhea and very small white crusty lesions on the skin. One dog had copious amounts of mucous from the eyes. I began to feed all dogs more real food with Turmeric and Dandelion. One dog suddenly developed small cysts on his chest and a fast growing cyst on a front leg near the chest (the Turmeric has now gotten rid of all cysts).

Everyone was improving until I purchased a bag of Beneful last week. This week the Great Dane mix has rejected even the high quality dog food, and several others have skipped several meals. Today I read about the recent lawsuit filing, the toxic and fungal ingredients in Beneful and canine symptoms. I will no longer be purchasing any Purina products at all. It isn't worth the risk.

I have extremely detailed vet reports to prove my written witness. I can also track the purchase of Beneful dog food as well as provide witness from Dexter's extensive vet staff. Mid September 2014, Dexter, was a healthy 8 year old pug. I fed him Beneful Healthy Weight and as the vet bills and reports state, at that time, Dexter had suddenly suffered severe and ongoing seizures on and off for hours. He also was vomiting. Dexter's vet examined him and sent Dexter to the local Veterinary ER.

After a diagnosis of, "we are not sure what has happened to Dexter but we will contact a neurologist for added information," we were advised to try Phenobarbital, then constant seizuring started. Dexter was admitted to and cared for in the ER until stabilized. Following discharge, the neurologist and both vet staffs concluded that they still didn't have an answer for Dexter's sudden symptoms. As a group, they chose a 5 medicine regimen in the hopes of a clear diagnosis. More testing, still, no diagnosis. Then began a "let's ween off this medicine and then that medicine and maybe we can decipher the cause and consequentially the treatment" approach.

Dexter did well for four months while closely watched and tested by his vet staff. Still the cause and diagnosis alluded Dexter's extensive medical staff. Dexter began drinking a great deal more water than usual and he started urinating in the house, he was somewhat lethargic and didn't act like himself, he ate a lot but still lost weight and he began vomiting on and off. Testing after testing, consulting and more consulting, still no diagnosis.

January 15,2015 Dexter started acting as though he was having trouble seeing and he seemed off balance, soon after, he had a seizure. Dexter's vet said to keep an eye on him and if he got worse, bring him in. January 16, 2015, Dexter got out of bed and urinated on the floor and laid down where he peed. He refused to eat and drink. By the time I got Dexter to the ER, as stated in report by the attending Veterinarian, Dexter showed signs of blindness, instability and lethargy. He is depressed, has signs he is not seeing well and his balance is off. His exam and his blood work supported these signs but did not show any specific abnormalities.

The vet listed 3 possibly diagnoses but admitted to no true diagnosis. After $3,000.00 plus in vet bills and hundreds of dollars in medications and hours upon hours of vet care, Dexter's vet said to take Dexter home and if he worsened, call or bring him back to the ER. We took Dexter home. Dexter slept for a few hours but upon awakening, it was clear that he was losing his motor skills, as well as his ability to see. I called the ER and they said they didn't think they could do anything more for him but we were welcome to bring him in. As my daughter, and my grandson said their "good-byes" and held Dexter for the last time, I readied him for his trip but when we saw his tongue has turned white and he had lost all motor ability, we all knew Dexter was dying.

By the time my husband brought the car to our door and he came in to say, "let's go," I told him, "never mind, he won't make the trip." Dexter died in my arms. Dexter's extensive vet staff are still admittedly baffled by the series of events. I am totally, emotionally devastated. If, it is a fact that Beneful caused my Dexter's death... that company caused a loss in my life that is indescribable and the company should take responsibility for their neglect.

Then again, I don't expect them to care, "it's just a dog," right? NOT SO! Dexter was a companion for myself and my grandson. My grandson has suffered a great loss as well as have I. I do blame Beneful because my otherwise perfectly healthy furry buddy became suddenly I'll and died for no diagnosable reason and the accounts from other dog owners sound terribly familiar. If I had know that Beneful was to blame, I would've stopped feeding it to Dexter and maybe he would have recovered.

Then on Christmas Eve she had a seizure and was immediately taken to the emergency vet. After 3 days she was stable but they couldn't figure out what was wrong. She was becoming hypoglycemic because there was something wrong with her pancreas but it wasn't cancer or diabetes. After thousands spent I just didn't have anymore money.

She came home with medication that I was told would only help her in the short term. I had hoped to be able to afford further testing but she didn't make it that long. The worst part is that so much had been spent trying to help her, I couldn't pay to have her humanely euthanized. She died in my kitchen floor after 3 days of deterioration. I'll spare everyone the awful details that are permanently burned into my memory, but let's just say it was not peaceful. It was heartbreaking to watch but I didn't leave her side because she'd never left mine.

Nicco was the best dog I've ever had. She was my best friend and had been with me since before my children were born. They've never known the world without her in it. She loved them and cared for them like they were her pups. She was so much more than a dog and she didn't deserve to suffer. After reading what others have experienced and how similar it is to what happened to Nicco I'm shocked and I am beyond angry. My great dane of 12 years passed away Dec 22, 2014. I had changed him over to Beneful around the first of the month (DEC). I noticed him losing weight and passing blood thru his bottom and problems going to the restroom. I had just bought a new bag of Beneful on Dec 21st. The morning of Dec 22nd I opened it and fed my dog. I did not know it would be my last time. It was cold out when I let him out that morning to use the restroom.

15 mins later I go to let him back in and noticed his slow walk and his stomach was really swollen. I loved on him for a few mins and he laid down so I left to do some running around. A few hours later I got the phone call he died. I have had a few people ask me what I was going to do with my full bag of dog food sitting in my garage and if they could have it for their dog. I told them no for the reason I think that's what killed my dog. I still have the bag and I truly think it was the cause of my dog passing. I will be getting it looked at and will get to the bottom of this. I hope it's not true. Love your pets.

Our dog recently passed and has always eaten only Beneful original dry food. He started with vomiting before I noticed anything strange but he was a strong dog and I figured it was just a bug and would pass. Less than a week later he started having difficulty breathing and couldn't move his legs and acting very confused. He was a strong almost 9 year old, a rotty mix. By the time we took him to the vet his symptoms were advanced and he wasn't himself at all. We were told it could've been poison or tumor bursting and best put him down..... We still are heartbroken and my children are too. He was part of this family. Who do I need to contact about this?????

We have 2 older rescue Great Danes that began having stomach issues. So we went to the old stand-by, burger that's boiled then the fat is siphoned off the top and plain boiled macaroni noodles. Once they were back to normal we thought we'd try the Beneful. They both got so sick with both explosive diarrhea and vomiting. They got dehydrated in only 2 days. We only gave it to them twice. So we obviously went right back to the Burger & noodles only. It took over a week for them to recover. I was going to donate the rest of the bag to our local pound, but decided against it. Didn't want to ruin some poor, stressed out pound dog's chance to get adopted.

So Sunday Feb 22 he began to have seizures that night and early Monday morning, I rushed him to the hospital Monday morning and they began to give him fluids and other medicine. Later on that day the doctor called and said he was doing fine and he was now responding. I began to smile because I knew my friend was going to be just fine. Then I got another call later on, saying that my best friend of 6 years might not make it and that I should come and say goodbye. When I got there I was told that his liver was malfunctioning and there was nothing else they could do. The hardest decision was to let him go. My beloved Tito passed away Monday afternoon and he will forever be missed.

He's anemic and has a mass that is attached to his spleen that fills his whole abdomen pushing his intestines all to one side, pushing his stomach and heart and everything else. He's lost 27 lbs in 3 months but looks like he's carrying a basketball in his stomach. He's lost his fur on his tail and his ears.....

He's has always been on Beneful since he was a puppy. About 2 years ago, he started having seizures, bouts of diarrhea with blood, vomiting etc but was still active until he gained too much weight. I took it that he wasn't active enough since he's been living with my mom as her protector, I never would have guessed it was his food until I saw an article posted today and everything everyone is saying with their dogs is what mine has been suffering through. My heart has sank thinking that I may have caused my dog to get sick by feeding him Beneful all of his life. He's my son's best friend and we're all heart broken. He's not even 8 years old..... It's in God's hands to help him and we pray that He can for he is the best dog anyone could ask for. Shame on Beneful!!!!! :'(

For close to 1 year now Trixie has been on Temaril-P for the itching & still has managed to get a secondary staph infection & is now on Course 2 of a 30 day Treatment of Cephalexin. About 2 months ago, her eyes started to glaze over & we found that she had lost her close up vision. She could only see shadows if the light was very bright. Since being on the antibiotic treatment for her skin her eyesight has improved tremendously. She has one blue & one brown eye. We could not see the blue anymore. Her pupils were totally dilated. I changed bag sizes and stores this time because my new puppy is a bigger Eater now. I had bought it in 5 lb bags at the Dollar General Store with no problems. Anyhow it started with a lot of stomach noises from both dogs right after I started them on this new bag. Then the puppy a 8 month 5 lb Chihuahua started puking and having the runs. Then a few days later my older 3 year old 3 lb chihuahua started puking too!

So I took away all the food and started hand feeding cooked chicken and rice and lots of water to drink. After 3 days of NO BENEFUL they are doing ok. I don't have the cash to take them to the vet and now after seeing this on the news I'm worried! My dogs mean the world to me! But being disabled there just isn't money for vet bills! The vet diagnosed him with kidney failure and after learning more about the symptoms, I recall his increased thirst, urination, and weight loss for at least 6 - 9 months before it was recommended to put him down. It saddens me to think that I played a role in my best friend's death by feeding him Beneful. I had my dog from a puppy for more than 10 years. Not that I put two and two together but I noticed that he urinated a few times in the house and I know that that was not usual. Soon after I brought him to the vet to see why he may be having problems and they said his protein levels were high and that would indicate kidney failure. One night I came home and my dog was lethargic and his breathing was not the same. He then proceeded to have these gut-wrenching convulsing pains along with a sharp whimper.

It then proceeded to become worse until he almost couldn't breathe. I rushed him to the emergency clinic on Jan 14th 2015. The vet was able to stabilize him but we proceeded to start to try to find out what was happening to my what was a perfectly healthy pooch. For days later he proceeded to have these seizures where he would fall over, urinate and defecate all over himself. Norman had an appointment Thursday morning February 18th. When I woke up early to get him ready for his appointment my doggy was dead on the floor. I am devastated to hear about this and I will definitely proceed to find out what is in this food because I still have the remaining food that is still in the bag. We had ran out of dog food. My mother was in the hospital recovering from surgery, and I was taking care of my disabled sister as well as my mother's pets. It was dinner time and as we'd ran out of food, because of the chaos in the house. I ran to the local grocery store and bought a bag of Beneful, figuring it was the better quality of food available at the store.

Two weeks later, Ringo her Papillon Yorkie mix was dead. We let him out in the yard with the other dogs, and when we let them back in, he was collapsed at the back door. He was dehydrated, shocky with tremors and jaundiced sclera and white gums and before I could even run him to U of P, he died in my arms. I performed CPR on him for 20 minutes before I gave up. Under his coat he was thin, with a hard swelling in his abdomen in the area of his liver. I went over every dog in the house and they all displayed some degree of weight loss, anemia and jaundice and every one had dull looking coats. Ringo died the day before my mother came home from the hospital. He was 6 months old. My mother died exactly one month later.

The only thing that changed was their diet. As soon as I switched them back to their regular food, all my mother's dogs perked up, they got the shine back to their coats, they stopped looking anemic and jaundiced. There is no reason for a healthy puppy to die for no apparent reason. Upon coming on this information, I am more certain than ever that the food had something to do with his death.

My Min Pin was a rescue. She had been moved from 3 different homes before she came to live in my home. She was the perfect pet! She didn't bark; she didn't get on the furniture; she was house trained; and she wasn't fussy about food. I loved her instantly! She was spoiled and got only the best. (I thought) All of my dogs through the years had Purina Puppy Chow and Dog Chow. I trusted the brand! Beneful had all of the best ingredients to feed your dog if you read the ingredients. I was certain she was getting the best! She had a dry skin condition so I was very careful about what she ate! She had all the different dry food flavors! I had her less than a year.

On Friday July 11th, 2014 Athena started to act like she lost her appetite. She ate that morning but that night she wasn't hungry. Saturday July the 12th, 2014 she was throwing up! She wasn't eating but was drinking water. Soon after she drank water, she would throw up again. I called the Vet on Sunday July 13th, 2014 was told as long as she was drinking she would be ok. He would see her Tuesday the 15th, 2014 and to make sure she drank plenty of water.

Monday night I held her all night because she was seizing! I thought she would die! It was horrible to watch her little body stiffen and her legs go straight out! Dogs don't show pain unless it's severe! And the stiffening of the legs is a sign of pain! It was awful for her! The veterinarian put her on IV's of pain meds and fluids right away and ran tests. The next day she wasn't any better and the Vet said she had renal failure! I burst into tears! What could we do? She was terrified and had to stay there at night by herself.

The Vet asked me if I had an antifreeze she could get into? I told him no and assured him she had not been in contact with any. My yard is fenced (4' high) and it's an acre. She had no way to get any antifreeze at all but he said she was poisoned by it! We kept my baby on IV's another night and the next day she was still very sick and would never recover. She had complete renal failure!

I held her as they put her to sleep and still cry when I try to tell about how she suffered! It was heartbreaking and I miss her. I promised her to keep her safe and give her a good home for the rest of her life. I failed. I bought her poison and it was named Beneful! She cannot be replaced and I will always have this terrible feeling of guilt!

She improved briefly, but became ill again in January, adding bloody diarrhea and urine, refusal to eat, and hemorrhaging under the skin with bruise-like lesions on her abdomen 1-2 cm in diameter, and smaller lesions in her mouth. At that time he took her to the vet, and was given steroids. Unfortunately, she worsened, and within approximately a week she passed away during the night. Eevee was only 8 years old.

He was only 5 years old and died of premature kidney failure. I remember specifically asking the vet if it could be caused by the food. She assured me the Purina was a good brand that had been around awhile and that surely if there were issues with the food, we would have known. I had no idea 1000s of dogs have died with a commonality of eating Purina Beneful dog food. Another one of our dogs died last year (2014) again of kidney failure. That was enough proof for me to switch dog food brands for our remaining dog. There is definitely more going on than just coincidence.

Charlie is a 4.5-yr old Shih tzu who went for his last veterinary checkup in November 2014 and received a clean bill of health. On arriving in Arizona, we purchased Beneful dry kibble dog food for him. Sometime in January, I saw him get up and walk across the floor but his legs seemed to give out under him - as if his legs were "asleep". He got up, took a couple of steps and collapsed again. I thought it was very unusual but he sat there for a few minutes and got up appearing to be fine. This happened twice - a week or two apart but I didn't make note of the dates.

Early in February, Charlie became very lethargic, developed a bad odor and was generally showing signs of distress. We bathed him, cuddled him, kept him with us 24/7 and on Feb.17 Charlie experienced a grand mal seizure and we rushed him to a after hours Animal Hospital. He was tested for Valley Fever - those tests had negative results. A week later and Charlie is better, although still smells "sweaty" and he has started urinating in the house or waking us during the night to let him outside. I have posed a question to the veterinarian whether the seizure could have caused kidney damage, no answers yet.

Today I heard that there are many, many others having similar health issues after eating Beneful Dry Dog Food. I will be returning the remainder of the bag to the store and never NEVER buying Nestle products again. It just goes to show if you don't know what some of the ingredients are, (i.e. propylene glycol is "an automotive component that is a known animal toxin and is poisonous to cats and dogs") don't feed it to your loved ones! I just hope it isn't too late for Charlie to have a full recovery, I don't know what I would do without my best friend.

In December of 2011 I had to put my best friend and first dog down. She was a Yorkie named Tea. I got her as a puppy and she was an extremely healthy dog her whole life. Then I began feeding her Purina Beneful. Within a month her health started to deteriorate. She became very thin, she threw up often and had diarrhea. She got so that she wouldn't eat anything, even her favorite treats. One day, after shopping for Christmas tress, we came home to find her in her kennel. She would not come out at all. I had to tear the kennel apart to get her out. She had vomited and defecated all over herself. She could not stand on her own.

My husband gave her a bath while I called an emergency vet clinic. Her eyes had become almost glazed over. We took her to the vet, where he told us that her kidneys had shut down. They had almost 0 function. He said that it was too late to do anything. I asked if she was in pain and he said she was, so I had to make the hardest decision of my life. I had to let my best friend go. This only added to the misery. I was already in from suffering a miscarriage earlier in the week. It was almost more than I could handle.

The vet did tell me it was like she had gotten into something or that she had been poisoned in some way. I couldn't think of anything she could've gotten into though. I attributed it to her age. She was 2 weeks from being 11 years old. However, after hearing all the horror stories about Purina and Beneful, in particular I put 2 and 2 together. My sweet Tea was poisoned!!! I now have to live with the fact that not only did she suffer horribly, I unknowingly did it to her by feeding her this dog "food"! I will NEVER again buy Purina and hope that everyone hears these stories and puts them out of business, so no other animals and owners have to suffer!!!

Cooley was a 7-year old Australian Shepherd/Collie. Cooley experience vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and stomach pains about 6 months ago. The vet at Banfield ran bloods tests and results came up with nothing. Therefore we took him to PVSEC of Pittsburgh because that wanted to monitor him. He stayed for 3 nights where the vets could only identify an unknown illness.

February 7th, Cooley woke up early barely able to stand to go to the restroom. When he did use the restroom he had extreme diarrhea and dehydration. Please know that Cooley was a very healthy and happy dog that loved his play time followed by lots of drinking water as he was doing this the day before. We monitored Cooley throughout the morning where is progressively declined and his pain in his stomach increased. Therefore, we immediately took him to the hospital where they checked him into emergency care administered IVs, pain medication and try to stabilize his blood sugar.

The overall goal was to stabilize Cooley because the immediate diagnoses was he was very ill. We then received a phone late February 7th that Cooley has little improvement and his chances were 50/50 and the vet still had little idea as to WHY Cooley was ill. His pain medication was increased and still Cooley was in extreme pain. The vet also said that he would not make it through a exploratory stomach surgery. We then had to make the decision to put Cooley down.

Cooley was feed Beneful puppy, Beneful Healthy Weight and Playful lifestyle throughout his 7 -years of life. As we read the signs and symptoms of these Beneful products it aligns with the result of our dog, Cooley because he has been a healthy dog his entire life. We have had our dogs on the Banfield health plan. In addition, they are 99% of the time by our side and do not eat or get into anything. We have now discarded all Beneful for our other dog, Mac.

Not at all like himself since we started him on Beneful. We spent over $2500 with the vet for all sorts of tests and meds. We eventually had to put him down last December. He just never recovered and it was heartbreaking to see him just lay around. We had to carry him outside sometimes to pee because he just didn't have the strength to walk on his own. Both of them started losing weight, drinking a lot of water and suddenly began urinating in the house. They were listless and walked like they were drunk at times and couldn't stand up straight. Holly passed away first with seizures, vomiting and diarrhea. She had been to the vet for her rabies shot and a check up. The veterinarian expressed a concern about her weight loss. Taz started also losing weight and refusing to eat along with the some of the same symptoms that Holly had shown. They both had been eating Beneful IncrediBites for several weeks.

I hadn't heard about the food making dogs sick; I wish I had known and maybe they would be alive today. I always trusted Purina products but I will never buy anything else that they have marketed for pets. I now have two Pembroke Corgis that have been on Beneful dog food since they were puppies - vet recommended. I have spent thousands of dollars on medicines and office visits for both of them because one had terrible raw rashes on him and most medicines were not helping. This dog suffered with the rash and I had to constantly bathe him with special, very expensive soaps and it was hard on him and hard on me, but I kept hoping that one day they would work. He also had a tumor removed and now still has a few more, one attached to the wall of his colon. He also has kidney failure.

My other Corgi has had a large tumor removed from his rectum one year ago. It has since grown back and my vet said we will have to remove it again. I was shocked today to see on the news that Beneful Pet Foods are causing similar problems. My vet put my dog with the kidney failure on a special prescription food last year, and guess what? The rash is gone. I thought I was giving my dogs a good food, seeing it was made by Purina. I'm sick over this news but glad this came out so I can stop killing my dogs with Beneful.

He has been eating the Purina Beneful Dog Chow since we got him at 4 months. First the puppy chow and then the adult. He would occasionally vomit bright yellow mucousy liquid. In October 2014, he hemorrhaged bright red blood and blood clots from his digestive system in COPIOUS AMOUNTS. First at home, and then at the veterinarians - covering the examination table. It was a shocking sight. They took abdominal X-rays and found that he had a large amount of gastrointestinal inflammation. He was diagnosed with Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.

He was given an injection on Tylosin, and sent home with 2wks of Tylosin pills. He was also given packets of Fortiflora to be sprinkled on his food, and put on MCRC Dog Gastro Low Fat wet food in order to rest his digestive system and build back up his natural flora. It was a hugely frightening time. I had him at home wondering if it was going to happen again and if he was going to be ok. Also feeling badly for feeding him what I had, when I thought it was supposed to be good food. The only other things he got were Milk Bones. I had been very aware of the dog treats from China issue and had not given him any of those.

Now, upon the veterinarian's recommendation, he is on the canned Science Diet food for the Mature Adult 7+. He can also have the Science Diet kibble, but he won't eat it. He has never vomited since he switched to the Science Diet. Anytime I went to a veterinarian I told them what foods he was on. The only time I heard anything about Beneful was after the hemorrhagic incident in 2014 when I was searching around the internet reading about dog food. Beneful kibble is literally sold everywhere...in grocery stores, pet food stores, Target, and I assumed it was a quality product. I have bought it both in Canada and in the USA. It definitely has propylene glycol in the ingredients here on the label. Had I known what it was, I would not have fed Beneful to my dog. He is too important to me. It was an awful experience and not one I would wish on anyone. I am sorry for anyone who lost their dog. I was lucky.

A few months ago I had called the company because both my dogs had gotten violently ill (frequent diarrhea, vomiting, not wanting to eat or drink, sleeping all day) after buying a new bag, the healthy smiles. I had asked if there was any recalls on this food, thinking it was just a bad batch, and told them how sick they were. I was told there had been no other complaints about the food and they sent me coupons and a bag to fill with the food so they could test it.

I continued to feed them Beneful since my Great Pyrenees is very picky and flips the food bowl whenever she does not like the food. My Chow mix seemed to have had more issues with it where he would throw up a lot (I always just assumed he ate something he was not supposed to since he does that a lot). And gets really dry patches in his skin where he will scratch until it bleeds unless I put vitamin E oil on it. He also has seizures. Now I'm wondering if he actually has epilepsy or if it has been the food causing it all along. I feel horrible for feeding this to them. I just heard about the lawsuit because of what this food does to dogs and now I have been really worried about my dogs. I went to town and bought IAMS and that's what they are eating now. I came home and did some research and found all the issues about what is happening with people's dogs, and I'm sickened and horrified that I was killing them both with this food. If you are feeding your dog BENEFUL stop now before it kills them!!!!!

Our German Shepherd was on Iams for 4 year and noticed she was often gassy after eating. We recently adopted a military K9 Belgian and he had the same reaction to Iams so we decided to try another brand. After visiting the commissary I spoke with a vendor who recommended Beneful and gave me a coupon. It's been 3 bags of food and 6 weeks. We noticed our German was acting funny, very moody/depressed, losing a lot of fur, and drinking a lot of water. Both dogs have been lying around and they usually are high energy dogs. Then our Belgium began itching and we noticed he chewed a chunk out of his side. One of my friends posted about this issue today, I did some research, went and bought Nature's Choice, which was recommended for its ingredients. I came home, have taken this Beneful crap and put it in the garbage where it belongs.

I fed my chihuahua Purina Beneful dog food and treats, I have the bags. He began to stop walking, drinking and eating. Vet euthanized him after running a blood test on 11-25-14. My female chihuahua never liked Beneful, so she didn't eat it. She is alive and healthy. We have prior health records on the male chihuahua. He was fine long before he started eating Purina Beneful, but died after eating it.

My cocker spaniel was experiencing bloody mucousy poop and at times vomiting blood. I had to give her antacids since you could hear her stomach churning, it would wake you it was so loud. I never thought a popular dog food company could be the cause of the problem till I read these stories. Thank God I changed her food to another brand since they had a sensitive stomach formula. I would cry and cry thinking I was losing her but thank God I was a lucky one that she survived maybe just by luck of me changing her food. So sad to hear of those not so lucky if in case this what was causing her health problems!

The night of Jan. 31, 2015 my 10-year old Lab seemed different - wouldn't take any treat. That morning she threw up all her breakfast and continued this for a couple hours before we decided to just take her in. She has always been on this food so never thought it could be the reason, but after IVs, barium test, blood work, in and out of the vets all week then sent to emergency rooms, and finally, Oakland referral critical care; they started. Ultra sounds, stomach pumped from a gallon of bile, trickle feed and more IVs for a couple days, now bland diets and 6 different meds. 2 weekends later she's still not herself and no one knows why.

All her test seem to show no reason - results say liver size is normal, just slightly coarse in echotexture and hyperechoic, gall bladder moderately distended. Moderate amount of non-organized hyperechoic bile. Now we are cutting back on her meds, hopefully the diarrhea stops and pacing. But she won't ever get this food - can't afford that again. $4000+ later I plan on calling them. TY everyone, just wish I knew of this sooner.

Last April our 9-yr old Shar Pei began drinking lots of water and having diarrhea. He also had 2 episodes of seizure-like activity that could not be explained. I thought he had diabetes because I could see that he had lost weight. I took him to vet and lab work, wasn't terrible, so vet recommended he come back for an US. He went for the US which showed a mass. The vet recommended exploratory surgery since she couldn't tell exactly where mass was. The mass was so large, his intestines were blocked and he had metastatic disease to liver and lymph nodes. He never got to come back home. :( We had fed him Beneful for 7-8 yrs.

I have a 3 year old maltese. She was constantly vomiting, and would cry very loud as her stomach made awful rumbling noises. She also couldn't lay down. Her stomach hurt so much she would pace back and forth. I was told by our vet she had swollen intestines, and a bloated tummy; so I bought her medication. Her intestines became swollen again about 2 weeks later. I switched her food from Beneful to Nutro Ultra which I bought from PetSmart. Almost instantly she was better (once I switched her food). I highly recommend Nutro Ultra, it’s very good for my dog, and she hasn't been sick since.

After receiving this article about Beneful dog food it's got me thinking. This past thanksgiving my dog past unexpectedly after trouble breathing for about day and a half. He was drinking a lot more than usual for weeks at the time and ate beneful food everyday. And just few weeks ago my fathers' dog died unexpectedly. Was throwing up one day and that night he past. He also ate beneful. We have one more dog that's eating beneful and lately been drinking a lot and eating snow every chance she gets. With the snow, just figure it's normal dogs like to eat snow but now I'm worried. How do I find out if this food was a factor in both my dogs' deaths and is it a problem for our third dog? It hasn't been recalled so I don't know. What if anything I should do. Can someone email me with advice?

I was feeding my Sheltie Beneful and she ended up getting sick and dying of kidney failure. I had spent thousands of dollars on vet bills for tests and treatments trying to save her but she passed away anyway. I wish I had known about the Beneful epidemic at the time or I would have NEVER fed her that garbage. She would still be alive today if I had done things differently. This happened three years ago and I don't have any saved receipts.

After over a year of feeding my dog Beneful, he began to vomit and his urine had an unusual smell. When I took him to the vet-- I was advised he is sick and would need medication everyday. As well as lab test on a regular basis to monitor his condition. He's a little 6lb dog and is now 4.6lbs. He refuses to eat and is withering away. His illness is costing a small fortune and has broken my family's heart that our dog's time is limited. Purina must know that adding chemicals to its pet food would have fatal consequences. Although, Purina may not have had intent of awareness of the harm they are causing that is NO excuse for the damage they have caused.

Our 10 yr old just this past week started to not eat his food right away which he never did before and has been drinking a lot of water. I do some online research and found this web site!! We threw away all the food and went out yesterday to buy a new brand. I will never again trust the Purina Brand name!!! Then it was mixed with blood, and soon after she had blood in her loose stool. When she started to look for food after two days, we started her on rice for a couple of days. Her vomiting subsided and her stool got firmer. I WILL NEVER USE ANOTHER PURINA PRODUCT.

On or around February 7th, I purchased a bag of the Beneful senior dog food for my 17-year old Miniature Poodle. He's been healthy his whole life and never had issues with his food. I fed him Nutro prior to purchasing the Beneful. I had to buy a different dog food because I was out of his food and the store didn't have the brand I used. I chose the Beneful food because I hadn't heard the reports about it being bad. On February 14, my boy was running around and happy and seemed healthy. On February 15, I woke up to him losing control of bodily functions, also his back end completely gave out on him (he couldn't walk or stand at all.) He wouldn't eat, he drank a little water.

I immediately took him to the vet to see what was wrong. She said his temperature was very high and he was going downhill rapidly. She said we could do x-rays and put him in rehab but him being so old, his chances of making it were very small. I couldn't put him through that, he had a great 17 years. We had to make the decision to send him to a better place. My dog was always fine until I tried Beneful. A week later, he was dead. DO NOT LET YOUR DOG EAT THIS FOOD! I will tell everyone I know and hope your baby doesn't come to the same demise as mine.

We had a Saint Bernard that was 2 years old when he had his first seizure, it was in December and we had our Christmas tree all set up and decorated. I will never forget the screams that came from the living room. I ran from the back room to find our 185 lb dog having a seizure on our Christmas tree, bulbs busting, tree busted and dog foaming at the mouth and shaking like he was running. The kids were screaming.

I called the vet and they explained to me what to do. I was told to remove the kids from the room, get them into a bedroom and close the door, be sure the dog is safe and doesn't have anything around him that would potentially hurt him. They explained that he could become aggressive after his seizures because he will be confused and not be able to see well. And they were right. MOJO our St Bernard was terrified after this seizure. We were all terrified and didn't know how to handle this.

This continued through the day 5 to be exact, he had 5 more that were just the same - coming on without warning, busting things in the house, and one of them happened in the backyard where he then came at me barking and growling. I had to jump the fence and stay on the outside of yard for at least 5 min until he came to. Clearly we took him into the vet that evening to have his blood drawn and liver checked. The vet said there was nothing they can do, that it must be epilepsy... leaving there confused and feeling at a loss, feeling helpless.

They gave us a prescription for Phenobarbital that we started right away. We were also given Valium, between the two meds our lively happy pup was no longer himself. He was a zombie that we had to help stand up and help outside because he was so drugged he couldn't do it on his own. The meds worked for a short time about a month and then the vet added another med to the mix - potassium bromide. He was now on 10 pills a day to avoid him having 5 and 6 seizures a day. Not to mention that total for all 3 meds was about 300 a month!

This went on for 8 months. He would start having seizures again and they would up his meds. At about the 8 month mark our dog was having about 6 seizures a day and then one day he didn't come out of the seizures. He couldn't see anything and was losing his bowels in the house. He ended up just standing in a corner facing the wall... That is when we had to make a decision, a decision that tore us all apart. We had to decide if his quality of life was worth all of this pain. We took a few days to make this decision because we also at the end of that week we're leaving out of town to see my step sister for testing last time. She had pancreatic cancer and we knew this was gonna be the last time we would see her.

So on top of the sadness we had knowing we were going to lose my sister, we also that same we had to have our sweet MOJO put to rest. RIP MOJO. Before our pup started having seizures we fed him Beneful. I am really disturbed reading this article about the toxins that were in that dog food and that they were allowed to sell it for so long this way. Now, I can't say that the food was the direct cause of dogs illnesses but I can't say that it wasn’t either.

When your dog is having seizures, if a vet can't find the cause then they just call it epilepsy. I do however know that if you are suspicious about a specific toxin you can request a blood test for that toxin and the vet will send it out. But if you're not sure what toxins your pet may have come in contact with your vet will never know what to test for. Usually when a dog is brought in for seizures they check the dogs liver levels and not for direct toxins. I am so sad to have heard this and not known this a few years back. I hope the people can shut this company down with fines.

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents. I see rampant alarmism recently surrounding this product and it annoys me. If you haven't controlled for other variables such as exposure to disease, and haven't systematically ensured your dog eats nothing but Beneful, you can't legitimately claim your dog got sick from it simply from eating it. I am extremely skeptical of the claims that have been advanced. If this class-action lawsuit succeeds due to an investigation that determines the product is harmful, then the brand will be rightfully ruined for all time. If the lawsuit fails and no investigation anywhere shows anything provably wrong with the dog food, then this alarmism will still cause damage unfairly.

I have one dog...love him to death, and he eats nothing but Beneful dry dog food and the odd dog treat or biscuit. When he first started eating solid food, I gave him Beneful puppy food, and then switched to Beneful dog food. He has subsisted on this diet for 5 years. He has never been sick to my knowledge. He is always energetic, has a smooth and shiny coat, does not vomit (unless he drinks water too fast), has solid, normal stool, and when I take him to the vet semi-annually, they always tell me he is absolutely fine (although he should probably get his teeth cleaned at some point). He is an indoor dog and doesn't go out much, but we get enough exercise and he is a healthy weight. In short, he is a healthy dog. I'm going to keep buying Beneful until I see a good reason not to.

I started off with 4 dogs (3 mini Dachshunds and a Great Dane). I have been struggling with trying to resolve skin issues, severe bloody diarrhea (in the house), hot joints, bloat, excessive thirst and now peeing in the house. These dogs were in amazing shape and had all their manners and never had issues with housebreaking ever until they got sick. As I have been feeding them Purina Beneful for years and years, I never thought it was the culprit, but these issues started about 2.5 years ago and we have just lost one of our dachshunds to neurological issues/seizures!

One dog has unresolved skin issues (patches missing and black skin) that we cannot get a handle on after trying topical creams and tests. Since he's the only the one we know it's not communicable or parasites. We have 2 dogs that have bloody diarrhea that we can only get a handle on with antibiotics, but then the bloody diarrhea returns within a month after their doses are finished!! My Dane is suffering from swollen feet/toes, skin hot spots and ear issues. I can't believe this is happening! I trusted this company and completely assumed it was something else!! I am going to immediately remove this food from their diet and see if they recover! YEARS OF HELL and suffering though!! But too late for the our little one that passed Thanksgiving 2014.
