I started feeding my five dogs Beneful in June of 2012 after receiving coupons from PetSmart in an adoption/rescue packet. By September, I had to put my Doxie, Callie, down due to kidney failure. My dogs were scratching incessantly. One dog even pulled two toes out. I stopped feeding the four little ones Beneful after Callie was put down thinking grain allergies. They never had allergies before. I kept our large Goldendoodle, Cheesecake, on Beneful because she ate a lot, not knowing ... Cheesecake had a grand mal seizure in Dec 2012, followed by another in Jan. 2013. Her brilliancy is gone. She is on phenobarbital to stop the seizures.

I started investigating this food on a hunch and was sickened by what I read. After changing their food to Taste of the Wild, the little ones only scratch very, very, very little and there is no toe biting. I learned a very tough lesson. When calling corporate PetSmart headquarters, I was offered 10 bucks for our pain which I have yet to receive, and one person on the phone told me, "Well, you did purchase a low-end product!" I put in a complaint w/ the FDA which everyone needs to do and called Purina today. I feel it made my dogs very sick and caused Callie's death. Read Dogfoodadvisor.com and review your dog food. Please do not let this happen to you.

I have a 12-year-old Pug. In mid-February 2013, I decided to try switching his food because he has mild allergies (chews or licks his paws occasionally) and I heard that a fish-based food might help. I searched my local Walmart and only found two foods claiming to contain fish. One was Beneful Healthy Radiance and, for cost reasons, I chose to try that food first. I have never been much of a label reader and I don't understand nutrition, so I wouldn't know what to look for if I had read the label. I was also not aware of the complaints against Beneful at the time.

I began working Beneful into my dog's diet gradually. I took a lot of care to make sure that I didn't upset his stomach by switching his foods immediately. Within 1 month after I first introduced Beneful, several things happened. I noticed my dog was getting weaker and his legs started trembling frequently, but I attributed that to old age since he was 12 and will be 13 soon. I took him to the vet for his spring check-up and although the doctor gave him a clean bill of health, I noted that he had lost weight. He weighed only 22 lbs. when he normally weighs in at 24-28 lbs. depending on the time of year and how much we have been exercising. He has never weighed less than 24 lbs. in his entire adult life. The vet told me the weight loss could be due to old age but that it was something to keep an eye on. I should have told him that we had recently switched foods, but I didn't think of it at the time and the vet didn't seem overly concerned about his weight so we left it at that.

The week after our vet check-up and almost exactly one month after introducing Beneful, my dog had several severe reactions. He vomited four times during the day while I was work. He also defecated in the house several times that day, which is something he only does when he is under extreme stress or very ill. I watched him closely that evening and he was having severe itching fits and seemed extremely agitated. Then, for my final scare of the evening, he ran into the other room where he vomited and collapsed. I raced in after him and flipped on the light to see him laying motionless in his own vomit. It was only for a second or two because he struggled to his feet as soon as I cried out and ran to him, but it was the most horrifying moment I've ever had with him.

I did several things that night. I took up his food and kept him from eating anything for 24 hours to let his stomach settle. I also checked him for fleas, didn't see any sign of fleas, but applied a flea treatment anyway just in case because we had a warm winter and that week in particular had been unusually warm. I used the same brand of flea treatment that we had used on him the previous year. After the flea treatment, his itching subsided momentarily. The vomiting stopped as soon as he didn't have access to food. However, that night he woke me up with another itching fit.

The next evening, I gave him his dinner of Beneful after 24 hours of no food. He ate a normal amount. Within an hour, he vomited again. So I removed the food again. We waited another 24 hours. During this entire time, he was able to drink water normally without vomiting. After 48 hours had now passed, I decided to give up on the Beneful and put down a bowl of his old food. He ate quite a bit, which was not surprising after 2 days of not being to keep food down. I watched him anxiously all that evening but the vomiting did not return. He was, however, still having itching fits every night after we went to bed. The itching fits lasted for about 1-2 hours every night and consisted of him running around the house, rubbing up against the couch and beds, and whining and whimpering.

After just one day of being back on his old food, I noticed that my dog was stronger and healthier looking. His legs no longer trembled and he didn't appear nearly as old or weak. The itching has taken a little longer to fade but 3 days after his last mouthful of Beneful, he has finally stopped having itching fits and with the itching gone there is no more defecating in the house either. He was back to normal. I feel like I was very close to losing him and I absolutely believe that Beneful was to blame. I will never feed Beneful to him or any other animal again. I only hope I have not done any permanent damage to him internally. I will be keeping a very close eye on him and I'm rushing him to the vet if I see anything abnormal.

I'm sure people will wonder why I didn't take my dog to the vet when he was vomiting and itching uncontrollably, so I want to explain that. I had been to the emergency vet once before (about 2 years ago) for frequent vomiting and they had given me detailed instructions on what to do and checked him for dehydration, but otherwise did nothing. So this time around, I followed those same instructions and knew that he was not dehydrating because he was able to keep water down. The itching fits were annoying to both my dog and me, I'm sure, but they did not concern me nearly as much as the vomiting. I also firmly believed the cause of the itching to be fleas at first, although now I believe it had something to do with his allergies and Beneful.

In addition, I also now believe his weight loss may have been due to the Beneful and I expect I will see him return to a normal weight soon. Finally, while his collapsing did frighten me the most, I did not witness it first hand and my husband, who also did not witness it, convinced me that he probably slipped in his vomit. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. But the fact remains that he didn't try to get up immediately and that was what worried me the most. In hindsight, I should have taken him to the vet after he collapsed, but I was so scared that I let myself believe that he had slipped instead.

I am writing this only because I do not want anyone else's poor animal to suffer. I want people to hear and believe that this food can do horrible things to a dog. Please, if you are reading this, do not buy Beneful. There are many other cost-effective foods out there that do not have such horrible side effects.

I am still mourning my beautiful Black Great Dane named Maggie. I just had to put her to sleep from a football sized tumor on her tummy. I paid $1,000+ for that surgery. She was okay for about a week. Her harlequin sister, Gracie (litter mates), was 220 lbs. and is now getting a flabby belly, not eating, but drinking water like crazy. I am so darn mad. Maggie and her sister, Gracie, are what helped me through a horrible time in my life from an ex-husband after 30 years. It took 5 years to get divorced, and he ignores the order to pay me alimony. My stress was terrible, and I tell you, my Great Danes were my saviors. Maggie’s surgery didn’t work, and the antibiotics didn’t work.

Beneful was eating my Maggie’s insides up and just making her have more pain. I had her on pain medicine, Rimadyl, three times a day. That wasn’t going to keep her alive for my way, and I watched her getting worse by the hour. Beneful did it; you can believe that. I took her sister Gracie off of it, and changed to Rachel Ray; no Purina items. No way, no how. I was in the room with my Maggie on my lap giving her the thank you she deserved; even during the short time, those of us that own Great Danes, we know that the big dogs don’t make it past 7-10 years sometimes. But all the symptoms and the results of the big football sized tumor point directly to Beneful.

I miss my girl so much, and her sister is still waiting for her to come in the door to come home. Tell everyone to get their dogs off of Purina products, mainly all Benefuls. There are other cheap dog foods that dogs will like; something that can keep your dog or cat healthy. I continue to mourn Maggie. This dog slept back to back with me; that’s her way to keep her eye on me, and she felt safer and better. Once the vet opened her up, she only lasted one more week. Now, I am afraid my Gracie may be getting sicker like Maggie if her symptoms aren’t caught fast enough. When I went on Craigslist, I read the ad on there from people that were blaming Beneful and Purina for the death of their dogs.

Back in October 2012, I was away for the weekend and my 8-year-old Mini Schnauzer was staying with my parents. My mom called me to let me know that she wasn't eating or acting right at all. She wouldn't even eat the eggs my mom made for her that she tried mixing with her dog food - Beneful dog food. She was very lethargic. I came home on Sunday and immediately took her to the emergency vet. They really didn't do much at all for me. I then took her to my regular vet on Monday. In the meantime, she was not eating, not drinking, becoming dehydrated, throwing up, was just laying around, had no energy and could not walk up and down the steps to go outside to go to the bathroom by herself. I needed to carry her. Very lethargic.

My vet did some blood work and her kidney levels were sky high. I thought I was losing her. He kept her overnight on IV fluids and told me she needed to stay for 3 nights, so he could continue to monitor her. But he had thought with those high levels, she definitely was in kidney failure. So 3 days later and $400.00 in hospital charges, she began to eat special kidney diet food and was eating like a little piggy. I'm very lucky she got to come home with me, with the condition that she needed IV fluids twice a week and special kidney supplements that aren't cheap. So continual $40/month visits to the vet for fluids and monthly blood work, her kidney levels did come back down.

Had I not been feeding her Beneful food, this may never have happened and these continual visits to the vet to monitor her kidneys wouldn't be happening right now. I am one of the lucky ones that I caught it. My vet took care of her and she is doing much better now, but on special kidney diet dog food.

Last week I had a healthy, happy lab running and playing with my kids. After feeding her Beneful, I had to watch four brokenhearted kids try to come to terms with burying their dog. We've had her for since she was 6 weeks old. She would've been 7 this summer. Always a healthy overgrown baby, we gave her 2 bowls of this food and within days she went from excessive thirst to vomiting. We took her to the vet. He kept her because she became so weak she couldn't stand. Then this morning she was dead. Even the vet couldn't believe how fast she went down. Her kidneys failed, liver was messed up and white blood cell count was twice higher than normal. I just wanted add my story so people are aware and maybe stop just one person from losing their pet.

My mom has used Beneful dog food for the last 6 months. They are retired and on a budget and thought they should try another brand that didn't break their pocket book, especially with the recent increase in food prices. Over the last month or so, she noticed that the oldest dog, a 7-year old healer who was healthy and not overweight, became lethargic. The last day and half, one dog started vomiting blood. She took the female blue healer to the closest vet which is 1.5 hours from her house and found out that she had been poisoned by her new Beneful food and it had made her become anemic. The vet had also told her that three other dogs had suspiciously died from Beneful products in the last couple of months at that vet clinic alone. After leaving the vet, they stopped at the store to get new dog food. In the moments that they ran into the store, the once healthy female had vomited and died in the car.

Crying and upset, they drove the long journey home, thinking about where they could bury their baby. When they got home, they could no longer mourn because the other younger, very healthy, energetic 2-year old healer was vomiting blood. The other dogs (3 Chihuahuas) were also showing other occasional odd behaviors like minor seizures and difficulty walking today but had not started vomiting yet. Living a very remote location and unable to return to the vet hours away, she gave four dogs activated charcoal to help stop absorption of any toxins. She also gave them liver detox and vitamin B. Hours later, they are now finally starting to feel better, although they are definitely not out of the clear yet. The healer is still occasionally gagging, so hopefully it is only due to her throat burning from vomiting so much. I hope that the other dogs recover, as it is devastating enough to lose one pseudo child.

Beneful may try to say that it is not the food, and this could be an argument if one or two dogs got sick, but all five did. All five were fed Beneful. Oh and of the five, only two spent extended amount of time outside where they maybe could have ingested something. The other three Chihuahuas only go outside with supervision or in small enclosed pen because they will get eaten by coyotes or hawks; otherwise, they stay inside all day. There is no toxic plants or access to any chemicals in the house for any of the dogs to get. And like many petite deer Chihuahuas, they are picky and don't just eat anything. So there is no doubt that Estrella died from Beneful and it is making the others sick. I do not know how Beneful or the FDA can deny all of the complaints for so long. It is disgusting and shameful and although nothing can bring their baby back, they could at least stop others from going through the same pain.

I fed my dog Purina Dog Chow for years, and then I starting feeding my dog Beneful for about 4 years. On December 24, 2008, I bought a bag of Beneful, and my lab was sick and died on January 3, 2009. I bought the dog food in Dallas, TX at the Walmart. I was visiting friends and family for Christmas Holiday and New Year’s. I had no idea Beneful has had many complaints. Why is everyone passing the buck and not caring enough? This saddens me.

My dog has always been very healthy and had normal liver enzymes after blood work at the vet. Last week, he started licking the carpet so I took him to the vet who told me his enzyme level is suddenly highly elevated. A few days later, I saw a news article about Beneful dog food possibly sickening or killing dogs. I don't think it's a coincidence that my dog got sick two months after I started him on Beneful as I believed it to be healthier than his regular food. Then I see literally hundreds of articles online about dogs getting sick or worse after eating this food. It should be recalled until this issue is settled as a dog's life is just not worth risking. The FDA should regulate dog food so we can be assured we are feeding our canine family the same quality we would feed our human family.

It's taken me a while to write this, as I've had a hard time with the loss of my dog. I have been feeding both of my dogs Beneful for years without issue. In January, my Addy became violently ill and died within 48 hours from liver failure. She had been at the vet just 4 days earlier for a check on an unrelated issue and was given an excellent bill of health. So when she started getting extremely lethargic and vomiting that Sunday, I obviously became alarmed. She was unable to move her back legs well and started losing body temperature fast. Her belly and nose was cold as ice. She went into liver failure and we had to put her to sleep by Monday evening. Her doctor was in complete shock that she had been taken by illness so fast when she was so healthy just 4 days earlier.

We discussed the possibility that her food could have been to blame. We had just opened a new bag of food that week and both dogs ate from it for a couple of days. Our male dog didn't seem to have any reaction to the food. We immediately switched his food to another brand and he's had a lot more energy since. I can't say for sure that Beneful caused Addy's death, but I want to make sure that other dogs don't run into the same fate if it is their fault. I already reported the incident to the USDA but they never contacted me, so I guess they still don't see it as an issue. I really hope that something is done to save all these dogs before more have to suffer like my baby girl.

My miniature schnauzer has been eating Beneful for years. Three weeks ago we bought a new bag of Beneful for her. Since then she lost 20% of her weight and has been vomiting red sandy vomit, and her appetite has plummeted. A couple of days ago, she became extremely lethargic, a dazed look in her eyes, continuous vomiting, and stopped eating/drinking altogether. The vet put her on antibiotics and sent for a blood test. We initially thought it was pancreatitis after doing internet research for the cause of our dog’s sudden downturn and even told the vet that.

I spent an entire day reading about acute and chronic pancreatitis. After performing a full assessment on her, the vet didn't believe it was pancreatitis, and he is awaiting blood test results for answers. We even thought it was pancreatitis until he said that. He asked what food we fed her and then suggested a higher quality food than Beneful. So in the hopes that she would pull through, I started looking for a higher quality food (4 or 5 stars, Beneful - 1 star) for her, and that's when I saw hundreds of other people's pets experiencing the exact same symptoms as Mekah, which coincidentally started with this new bag of food. We never would have thought her food was poisoning her.

Our 9-yr-old Husky has been fed Beneful since he was a puppy. About 2 years ago, we noticed that he was drinking more water than normal. He also started throwing up after eating. We thought that he just ate too fast, so we purchased a special bowl to slow him down. The throwing up became less frequent but he still consumed lots of water. In November, he started to have accidents in the house. This is a dog that never, not one time, peed in the house even as a puppy while he was being housebroken. He was diagnosed with diabetes in November. He was a 92-pound Husky who now is 70 pounds and declining. I am not convinced he is diabetic as the insulin shots are not working. He still consumes large amounts of water and is unable to hold his urine. He trickles urine and does not even realize it happens. I am angry that we did not stop feeding him this food years ago if it did, in fact, shorten his life by affecting his health.

They ran out last night and the store did not have the Healthy Weight, so I picked up the Healthy Fiesta instead. They both ate half a cup of the Fiesta. This morning they could not get enough water when they woke up and one has now had two bowls of water. Needless to say, I threw away the food and ran to get them a more natural brand. I am hoping that half a cup of food did not cause any damage. They seem to be acting normal except for the thirst. I purchased a bag of Beneful at Walmart in Dec. 2012/Jan. 2013. Although soon after I bought it, I switched to making my own dog food (after a few weeks on homemade dog food, occasionally I would add about a quarter cup of Beneful to their homemade food to use up the Beneful). Shortly after, our one Doxie started with vomiting and diarrhea; and then our Jack Russell/Doxie started with the same symptoms. I was worried it was the homemade dog food (which was moister than the dry dog food), so I cut down on the homemade food and increased the Beneful. Their symptoms continued.

Then I spoke with a friend who had just bought a small bag of Beneful for his Boston Terrier mix, and she had the same symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting. So I looked up Beneful online and find horror stories of how it is causing kidney/liver failure and illnesses in our beloved pets! My dogs are going to the vet today to have blood work and other tests done. I'm in shock that a trusted company such as Purina has not recalled this poison and fixed this issue! My dog, a beagle, had been on Beneful for several years and was never quite the same. He was drinking a lot of water, got sick sometimes and lost his energy. To be honest, we thought it was his thyroids or his thyroid medication making him sick that way. In December 2012, he went downhill pretty fast. By the first week of January, he had got pretty bad and stopped eating. So we took him to the vet only to have blood tests confirm that he had been poisoned and had kidney failure. We hooked him up to dialysis, and he was put on another food. He got better a bit, and then a week later overnight he got really bad to the point of suffering and died in my dad's arms before they could get him to the vet.

At the time, I didn't know about the Beneful complaints. After reading everybody else's story a couple of weeks after, I came to believe that Beneful was also to blame in my dog's death. Everybody's story was the same. I think being on Beneful for so long caused so much damage to his kidneys that even after taking him off the food, it was too late. I am angry that Purina will not look into all these complaints. I’m even angrier that the FDA will not do anything about it. I have been feeding my two dogs Beneful for quite a while. They would often have stomach issues, vomiting and diarrhea, which I attributed to a sensitive stomach. About a month ago, my 12-year old Shepherd mix became very ill and would not go near her dry dog food. I fed her rice and chicken and slowly introduced some canned dog food (not Beneful brand). After a week, she was feeling better, so I started to introduce her Beneful back into her diet. She immediately got sick again. The next day, my 10-year old Jack Russell also got sick. I switched both dogs to the wet food and they got better within a few days.

As an experiment, a few weeks later, I gave my dogs a little of the Beneful as I was having a hard time believing a dog food could make them so sick. Sure enough, they began throwing up again. I threw out the Beneful and gave them a different brand of wet food from then on. I did notice that the amount of water they drank was drastically reduced once I switched the food. I used to refill their 2 water bowls 1-2 times per day. After switching, I found I was only filling them every other day. Again, I chalked this up to them now having a wet food instead of a dry food rather than make the connection that the Beneful was that bad. The dogs seemed to recover from their stomach issues and were acting normal again.

Then four days ago, I came home to find my Shepherd mix dead. I was heartbroken. She had shown no signs of illness. Although I can never know for sure what happened to her, the dog food has been in the back of my mind for a few days. Today, I was speaking to a friend about her passing. I had not mentioned the dog food at all and the friend asked if I had fed her Beneful. She told me about other stories she had heard about dogs becoming sick/dying after eating Beneful dog food. I googled it and stumbled across this website. I could not believe the stories I read here and the similarities between everyone's story and mine. I have stopped using Beneful with my remaining dog and he is going in to have a vet check to make sure his kidneys are working okay. Please, do not feed your pet Beneful, and help spread the word so this can be investigated.

After 4 days in the hospital being pumped up on antibiotics and fluids, he was released with medication and subcutaneous fluids that I needed to give him daily. He refused to eat whatsoever and I seriously thought he was going to die the first week after his discharge. The hospital bill was excessive, but I felt he was worth trying to save. In the meantime, my cocker spaniel was drinking excessively and going out constantly.

Coincidentally, by chance, I ran into two women I know: one at a pet store replacing her Beneful, because her dog became ill; and then another, two days later, relating a similar experience after she recently gave her dog Beneful. This is no coincidence. I pray that when my dog gets his follow-up this weekend, the news will be good. I am hoping my other dog will be fine, and since off the Beneful for a few weeks has stopped the excessive drinking. Something needs to be done. Are our pets being poisoned as in 2007?

I have three dogs that all eat Beneful. Last Wednesday, our dog Daisy was acting a little weird. She has storm phobia, and we had storms; so we really thought nothing of it. The next day we had plans to be out almost all day. We put our dogs out that morning to use the restroom, and she seemed less energetic but still okay. When we arrived home that evening, my husband let the dogs out of their kennel; Daisy could not get up and was panting heavily. He immediately took her to our vet who felt that she had had a stroke; her breathing slowed and she wasn't responding to anyone. The vet determined there was nothing else that could be done. We had her put to sleep at that point as she was in horrible pain.

We have fed all our dogs this food for years. Daisy had been eating it for 6 years as we got her as a rescue. My sons have special needs and the loss of our pet has torn them up, as well as me and my husband. We felt we missed something and could have prevented this. I have two sons with broken hearts as their dog is gone. I do not understand how I haven't heard a damn thing about this issue! My other two dogs will be taken off immediately. We can't bear to lose another beloved pet. I am passing on any article I can find about this. I am going to pick up the cremated ashes of Daisy today. If it was baby food, it would be off the ** shelf!

My beautiful, 7-year-old Labrador Retriever was put to sleep this morning from liver failure, liver failure that came from toxic Purina Beneful dog food! After a week of lack of energy, drinking extreme amounts of water and finally large vomiting episodes (with blood in them) and diarrhea, we had her blood test results. Her liver enzymes were highly elevated. Our vet thought cancer or a bacterial infection. We started Maggy Mae on antibiotics. They did not work. We had no idea about the horrific stories of pet owners losing their loved ones from this toxic food until we had some family members come for a visit. They own a kennel and are from Pittsburgh, where there seems to be a little more awareness. They saw our bag of Beneful and told us to google the reports.

During these last three days, our beautiful Lab has had her eyes, gums, nose and ears turn to yellow. She could not keep food down or in. We had to do the right thing. This is absolutely insane! Tainted peanut butter comes off the shelf but when it comes to animals, it is swept under the rug. I have even read one article where a reporter had the nerve to claim that these comments could be lies coming from the cut throat competition.

I promise you that this is no lie. This is a broken heart for a life cut too short. The only lies are coming from Purina. I have contacted the State of Michigan, Purina, and even Sam's Club where we purchased the food. I refuse to let someone else feel like I do today. My friend's cat passed away last week with the same symptoms as Maggy. She fed her cat Purina Cat Chow. These are not coincidences.

I noticed on Sunday morning that she had vomited some stomach contents but was fine and her normal self. On Monday morning, she was lethargic and by 3 pm in the afternoon, she was dead. She was a healthy 12-yr-old who had just had a physical in November and all was well. I am wondering now if something in the Beneful food could have been toxic to her.

Something needs to be done about this dog food before more deaths and expensive vet bills are incurred.

On February 19, we took our dog Vinny (9-year-old German Shepherd-Collie mix) to the vet because he was throwing up (he threw up a whole bowl of Beneful) and having diarrhea. They did blood work and said everything was good. By 9pm that evening, he was acting strange; he loves French fries and we brought some home for dinner and he didn't even want any. By the time we went to bed, he could barely walk up our stairs and couldn't jump on the bed. My husband had to pick him up and put him in our bed.

In the morning, my husband said, “We have to call the vet. He is really sick.” He could barely walk and looked so bad. We took him back to our normal vet and they did x-rays and blood work. They said he was anemic, dehydrated, and that his stomach was distended. They said it did not look like he was bleeding internally but to be sure we should take him to an emergency vet.

At the emergency vet, they did an ultrasound and said he was indeed bleeding internally and that it was most likely a tumor that ruptured and he would not make it through the night. They gave him some IV fluids and pain meds, and we asked if we could take him home so the kids could say their good byes. This was one of the most horrible days of my life to see the little girl crying and wishing it was Christmas so she could have a Christmas miracle. By 8pm that evening, he started to actually look better. He wanted to eat and drank some water.

He has been progressively getting better each day, which is a shock to the vet because they were sure he was going to die. We had been feeding Vinny Beneful Playful Life for about 2 years now, but we’re starting to wean him off it to a new food. He was only getting a 50/50 mix of food. The vet said to feed him boiled chicken and rice if we could get him to eat, and that’s all he's been eating since the 20th of February, and since he has stopped eating Beneful, he has been getting better and better each day. He actually wants to play and go for walks again.

I am so glad we decided to bring him home instead of putting him to sleep like the vet suggested. The vet called us the next morning to see how he was doing, and when we said he was actually up and walking around and wanting to play, they couldn't believe it. I just had to call and get one of his meds refilled because they only gave us a few days’ supply because they thought he had no hope of recovery.

I am positive that it has to have been the Beneful that caused his illness. I think it is a shame that Beneful is still being sold in stores. There is clearly a problem with this food, and animals are suffering because of it. It was heartbreaking to see our dog that sick and to hear the vet say he wasn't going to make it. I think the only thing that saved him is that we were not giving him full bowls of Beneful. I know after reading the stories of the others who have fed their dogs Beneful that I’m lucky he made a recovery at all.

We have used Beneful for many years. We fed it to our 1st dog, which died at the age of 9 from pancreatic cancer. Then in 2001, we started feeding Beneful to our lab mix puppy once she was done with Puppy Chow. Long story short, just this winter in January, our 11-year-old family member became violently sick. We took her to the vet 2 times. He gave her antibiotics, a shot for stomach pain and stomach pills for pain. She would not eat her Beneful at all. So we had to feed her pulverized boiled chicken or boiled ground beef by a horse shot syringe down the throat, because she would not eat her dog food. We gave her Activia every day a few times a day.

She had no energy whatsoever. She couldn't walk 20 steps without laying down. She could hardly get up to move without help from us. There for a few days we thought we were going to lose her. But with our persistence, she got fed meat, rice and no Beneful. Finally, she pulled out of this and needless to say, we switched her to something else besides Beneful. And now she is doing things that she hasn't done in many years. She has more energy roaming our property. She is eating up to 6 times a day and has the energy of a puppy, looks more healthy, is more alert, is hardly shedding hair, and has a shiny coat. The dog food we switched to is Blue Buffalo and have turned people over to this wonderful healthy dog food. Our family member loves this dog food and is thriving. So I will never go back to Beneful.

A few days before Jet, our healthy, happy 9 1/2 year old black Lab died, he started coughing, laying around and he didn't want to play which was very unlike him. We finally took him to the vet when one evening he didn't want to eat, drink water or stand on his own. The vet said he had gotten into some kind of poison. We knew that was not what happened because he never would run off and we didn't have anything that the dogs or our son could get into. The vet kept him overnight and the next evening, they called and said he was unresponsive, so I told them I didn't want him to suffer any longer and to put him to sleep. Six months after Jet died, our younger yellow Lab, Remington, started the same exact thing. We took him to the vet and they said he had intestinal problems which was caused by eating something he shouldn't have. We feed our dogs Beneful dog food about 75% of the time and they never received table scraps. It was very hard to lose both of our healthy dogs within 6 months of each other. When we get another pet, we will make sure not to feed them Beneful.

When I first started noticing the weird behavior, I took her to the vet. They did blood work but still after that, they said they couldn't find anything wrong. So we took her to an ER for dogs. Thousands of dollars later and after doing many tests, we still had no answers. The only thing the vet said was that she thought the dog was poisoned, but all the tests came back negative. After a few days of spending the night at the vet (she was also not eating Beneful anymore), she was getting better. Once we took her back home, she was fine for a day. Then the next day (after feeding her Beneful) when I went to let her out, I found her dead. I was devastated. How many more dogs have to die before you will do something about it?

She would get up and play with the grandchildren when they were here, but after she ate, she was very tired. We thought it was the weather. March 1st 2013, we went out; I came home and my son was at his girlfriend’s house. He fed her before he left. When I came home, she was sleeping; she did not get up like she does when someone comes in. I checked on her and the minute I touched her, I noticed she had foam around her mouth. She then started to have a seizure. I ran and called my son and picked him up. He rushed her to the emergency vet where they told him she had kidney failure, low blood sugar, and liver failure. They said they would have to keep her for a few days to test her, but she would have seizures for the rest of her life.

Did I mention our Misty was not old; she was 5 years old and part of our family? How do you tell a 3 going on 4 little girl, where Misty is? We told her she went to visit her Mommy. In time, we will tell her the truth but we cannot deal with it as adults. We have to think of Lailah and how she would cope with it. Something needs to be done - a warning, so other pet owners do not go through what we did in the future. Other pet owners already did. Beneful said the web is wrong and not true. How could all these pet owners be wrong? Maybe 10 could be, but not the amount of pets that had to be put to sleep or died in last 53 days. It was over 150.

Nestle bought Purina in 2001. They don't have a very good reputation for the human side of things, let alone pets. The Swiss company Nestle has bought out many companies over the years. I remember reading an article in the newspaper a very long time ago about Nestle selling baby formula that had to be mixed with water to poor countries that didn't have clean water. They are just another greedy for profit company. I had a similar experience to people who have lost their dogs 7 years ago. I decided to try Beneful for my two Shih Tzu's, one 8 and one 9 years old. My dogs started to get sick after a few months and developed liver problems. One day, I had found insects in the food that were red from the food coloring in the pet food. The insects actually turned red from eating the red kibble of the dog food. I stopped buying Purina products after that.

I lost both of my pets in less than a year. I had read what pet food companies are allowed to put in their food by the weight of by products. That means anything from chicken feathers to chicken feet. I'm a disabled Vietnam veteran and have been stationed in Europe two times. In the European countries, they are stricter about what goes into pet food. You never hear the food problems of pet foods in Europe like you do here because they have good quality pet food. I have 2 pugs now and only buy American natural dog food (Wellness Core) and American treats. I can go to bed at night knowing that my pets are healthy and getting the very best. My pugs are 6 years and 7 years old and have never been sick. My vet asked me what I fed them because she remarked how good they looked and their fur was thick and shiny. An educated buyer is a good buyer. I'm glad there are resources on the computer that I can use to make sure my pets are safe. My heartfelt sympathies go to those who have lost their pets because of bad pet food. My pugs are my kids. They make up for the qualities humans lack.

On Feb. 7th, 2013, we took Ginger, our 9-year old chocolate Lab, to the vets for her yearly shot and what we thought swollen ankles like arthritis symptoms, so we got pills vet recommended Tramadol 50mg and meloxicam7.5 mg and we will see how she does with these. He said we will know in a week if she feels better in her joints, so in the meantime, I didn't buy the brand of food for her we normally had. I stopped at Wal-Mart and bought Beneful instead, Healthy Radiance for her. She had eaten it 2 times a day for 5 days. Then on Feb. 12th, on a Monday night at 10:30 pm, she began to have a seizure then she seemed okay. My husband took her outside last time of the night. She then came upstairs with him and stood in the corner looking like she didn't know anything and fell to the ground having another seizure. We called the ER Vets and she told us to bring her in if they continued.

Well, we live 30 miles away from her vet so as we got her down the steps and into the truck, my husband driving and me helping keep her safe, she just seized the whole way there. When we got there, she administered Diazepam 2 times rectally and she still seized. Then it was put in her arm vein and she then calmed, collapsed and the meds knocked her out. We left the vets at 1:00am and brought her home. I slept with her on the floor and stayed with her next day, missing a total of 2 days work which she is worth it. But at 8:00am same day, she started seizing again so she went back to the vet. They kept her all day for observation and then back at home, she seized again. Vet bill was very nice, $444. So now, we have to give her Phenobarb everyday for the rest of her life. We started giving her Beneful 1 week prior to when all this began with the seizures. We feel she has brain damage from the seizures as she drinks water like it's the first time, even paces around the house and looks at you confused. We thought we were going to have to put her down but cannot!

She just lays around, not remembering the basic things anymore like sit, speak, shake, lay down, all she knew for 9 years. She has not barked. She just does what she wants like. She cannot see right. If she wants out, now you better be fast. This breaks my heart. I don't leave poison around for my pet to get into. She is like my baby. I didn't leave that out for them either but now as I have read all this info on Beneful, I guess I am poisoning my own pet. Well, I am so so thankful I've seen this on the news this morning as this is another bag I bought 2 days ago. This is getting thrown away and I am going to go buy new food.

The first vet thought he might be having liver/kidney failure and ordered an emergency ultrasound. The second vet told us there was nothing they could do and asked us if we wanted to put him down that day or take him home and watch him die over the next few days. We were devastated but we hadn't given up on him that easily. The third vet we took him to put him on a water pill and other medications to make sure his heart and such were functioning properly. He would, however, only eat the turkey flavored or the roasted chicken flavors of the Beneful wet dog food. He would not touch any other flavors. Maybe that should have been a clue. Over the past 2 years, he had been drinking 3 bowls of water a day instead of 1 but he was getting older and not as active and had put on some weight which I thought may have been making him want more to drink. He was very lethargic for about 2 weeks before he died. I plan on getting another dog, but after hearing all of these complaints and the recall of the chicken jerky which I also gave him, I will not be feeding my new dog any dog food or dog treats. We began noticing something wasn't right with our Siberian Husky, Kota (4-year-old male). Daily, we were finding vomit piles in the areas he typically would reside: yard, garage or even in house. In addition, I noticed he was starting to wheeze a lot when he was breathing ... often times gagging himself to a vomit. At first, I thought maybe he had caught a virus, as you hear dogs sometimes can. After a week or so, these symptoms did not seem to dissipate.

I began searching the house to see if he had gotten into something, without my knowledge, that possibly could have been harmful to him. My findings resulted in nothing. And still our dog's health was not in normal sorts. Next, I began looking through the selection of treats that we have for him. I have always been very conscientious of the brands of treats and food. Typically treats consist of Milk Bones and Food for the past 4-6 months, it has been the Beneful - Kibble. We decided to discard the bag of Kibble and try something else.

After 3-4 weeks of a sickly dog, switching his food over to a Tractor Supply brand of Lamb & Rice, he now seems to be feeling better. There were no more vomit piles, no more wheezing/hacking. Just this past week, I had Kota at the vet's for an annual checkup. They inquired on his general health and I mentioned what had been happening with the vomiting ... that it seemed to have gone away since changing his food, and I really didn't think anything more of it. Then last evening, I happened to catch the local news and saw the headline regarding dogs becoming severely ill from Beneful-Kibble dog food. Wow, What a scare!

Our story is completely similar with that of the people interviewed. Fortunately for us, our Kota is still living and well. Because of this, I felt the need to share our story. We need to protect our animals from poisons that seem to be sneaking into their foods & treats and killing our loved ones. Corporate America does nothing to protect; therefore, it resides on us as owners to take action. Times are becoming so scary and is leading back to the era of self-sufficiency. Growing and providing our own foods seems more and more necessary.

Jagger first started losing weight. I had always fed him Beneful dog food as I was trying to do what I thought to be healthy for him. Suddenly became lethargic and began drinking lots of water for about a week. He was taken to the vet on 2/9/13 and found to be anemic. Stool sample negative. Red cells 3.94, white cells 51.72, lymphocytes 42.6, platelets 98. Treated with IV fluids and antibiotic. Jagger became more lethargic, vomiting, diarrhea and unresponsive. He was taken back to the emergency care on 2-16-13 and white cells and lymphocytes were unreadable. The vet had never seen this before. Samples were ran to check the machine and the equipment was fine. Blood smear evaluation showed immature white cells predominantly lymphocytes. Red cells had fallen to 2.8, platelets 45 despite aggressive antibiotic treatment. Capillaries in eyes had ruptured. X-rays didn't reveal any internal bleeding or tumor. Lymph nodes swollen. Overnight fluids, broad spectrum antibiotics with no response to treatment.

Jagger was euthanized on 2-17-13. The vet believed it to be some type of leukemia, but said it was very, very rare that a young healthy dog of his age would get it. But that anything was possible. The reports here say the same thing! I filed a report with the FDA. You can do it online if you don't want to call. Our beloved pet died! Suffered for a week! He just turned a year old! My son lost his best friend!

Shame on Purina! My dogs had been eating Beneful for nearly 2 years now. I purchased a new 30 lbs. bag of Beneful Original Kibble last week (SKU#1780013477) from a Smart & Final here in Los Angeles. Both my 90 lbs., 3-year old Pitbull & my 12 lbs., 11-year old Chi-fox Terrier Mix are exhibiting the same symptoms; excessive thirst, lethargic, explosive diarrhea (even in their sleep), and they are unable to hold their bowels. I've had my buddies since they were only a few months old. Thank you to everyone who has posted. I am not hesitating and switching to better food right away. It breaks my heart to see my little babies so sick.

I have a question for everyone. When was the last time you had your pups teeth cleaned? I recently had their teeth cleaned. I'm wondering if there is Beneful residue (they may have ingested) or anything that could be tested off of their plaque for bacteria, etc.

I have a 4-year old Boxer who has always been healthy. We switched her food to Beneful early in the summer. The first thing I noticed out of the ordinary was she started drinking excessive amounts of water. She then began to lose her bladder, and was vomiting so I brought her to the vets. I was given medication to help with her bladder control. This did no good. She went back to the vets; I was told nothing was wrong. She continued to vomit occasionally and always seemed to have an upset stomach. Last week she was just not herself, seemed to be laying around and wouldn't even come to bed with us! Last Wednesday, I had to go back to the vet because she had clear saliva just pouring out of her mouth non-stop. My vet said she must have gotten into a toxin and started running through a list of potential concerns. My dog didn't get into any trash, nothing outside, no cleaners, nothing I could think of! The vet called later with the results of the blood work saying nothing was found to be wrong.

I knew something was not right. It got me thinking about the last several months and I thought the only thing that's different was her dog food. And looking at the big picture, I remembered when the trouble began! Then I found this site and knew my instincts were right! No matter what Purina (the makers of Beneful) or anyone else says, I know it is the problem. I made rice and chicken tonight for dinner. And I am researching a good, healthy food for my dog.

Our 14-year old Husky Airedale mix just died! Yes, he did have arthritis, but he grew a huge lump on his side that grew rapidly over the last few months. His ears got really bad seeping. He ate Beneful for years. The evening before he died, he started acting different. He went outside, but kept roaming around looking at the ground. He came in and had a glazed look and was foaming at the mouth. He was breathing rapidly. Within a few hours, he was dead. We thought his old age was the cause, but could it have been the last bag of Beneful we purchased? He was only eating that new bag for about a week. We are grieving because we had him for so long and are outraged that we found out about this trusted Purina brand. Rest in peace Slate.

We suffered many of the same symptoms the rest of the reviews claim: excessive water consumption (he would drink his entire bowl of water in one sitting), accidents inside the house after 9 years of being potty trained, he would vomit at least once or twice a week, etc. One day last summer started like any other; he was doing his usual vomiting but within an hour it turned bloody. He became lethargic and began having bloody diarrhea. I immediately rushed him to an ER and within 3 hours of the onset, he was gone. My dog Kopper (chocolate lab) has been fed Beneful dog food (all styles original, healthy weight, fiesta, etc.) for the past six years, at least 75% of the time. As a vegetarian myself, I thought the predominate ingredients would also be best for her. For the past several months, Kopper was showing a gradual decline I first attributed to winter - that I wasn't giving her enough attention, etc. She ate less, drank more and was slow in greeting me. Over two weeks ago, I noticed she was losing weight; her normally taut coat had ripples in it; ribs were showing, etc. She stopped eating, was very lethargic/unalert, was coughing/hacking, not barking, etc. I thought she had the flu as several friends animals had. Her last bag of food hadn't been Beneful and as she always liked it, went and purchased another bag of Purina Beneful brand 100% total and balanced nutrition original (UPC bar code 1780013476, purchased on 2/17/13), but she ate very little of it.

I took her to the vet on 2/18/13. The vet said upon examining her, she thought Kopper had cancer and was dying. A full blood panel was done. She did not have heartworm or parasites but was anemic and had a very high liver enzymes(?). Her stomach was bloated and very hard and her right eye was puffy and red instead of white. An ultrasound was performed and results showed a huge liver (1/3 to again as large as normal). The vet recommended x-rays after the first round of medication (Denamarin) was completed. Kopper was also prescribed pain medication (Tramadol).

Upon arriving home, I talked with a friend that evening, who told me she had read reports of Beneful causing deaths. I spent the next several hours researching online and what I found were similar symptoms to dogs who had died. I called Purina Beneful the next morning. The first person I talked to read me a statement, but the second person seemed to listen more and recommended I file a complaint and that Beneful people would get back to me. Not wanting to wait several weeks to find out results of x-rays, I brought Kopper back to the vets on 2/19/13. As she had not eaten anything, they did four x-rays and found no evidence of tumors or abnormalities other than a huge liver. The vet felt that there was a strong likelihood that a tumor might be in Kopper's liver and talked about doing a specific ultrasound in two weeks.

Two days later, 2/21/13, I was giving Kopper her medication in the morning when she sneezed blood that flew over the floor/refrigerator/cupboards. I called the vet and got her right in again. New blood work revealed normal clotting, a reduction in anemia, but liver count still rising (at 100 points over 2/18/13). The vet thought it could be from a tumor in her head or neck. Kopper had been improving in strength, vitality, etc. over the past day or so, so I was encouraged. She was eagerly eating and wanted to follow me around constantly. Yesterday, 2/23/13, when I went to give Kopper her meds, her muzzle was all bloody and blood was dripping out her nose. I got the blood stopped but didn't take her to the vet as my funds are depleting fast already - over $625.00 not including new food.

Of course, I had removed the Beneful from Kopper's dish upon research results on 2/18/13 and as I didn't know it was reportedly a problem when I took her to the vet the first time, the symptoms seemed remarkably similar to what was being listed. I have purchased expensive, wholesome dry/moist dog food/treats and am trying to get her system back to functioning while awaiting the next step. I am sure Kopper would have died had intervention above not taken place immediately. I believe Kopper has been fed an inferior product that, over time, has caused her vital organs to work harder to eliminate poisons and waste. Only because of her otherwise hearty constitution and significant intervention is she stable right now and ongoing intervention and care will hopefully bring her through this.

Today I decided to file a complaint with the FDA as I was reading that not many people had done so. It took me over 3 hours and multiple attempts to get the complaint submitted (very frustrating), so that is possibly why there's not many complaints filed.

Who knew it was the food! I switched to Blue Buffalo Grain free on Jan 31st and saw signs of improvement. I know dogs have been dying from Purina products, so I took My Gus to the vet for blood work. He only just turned 5 this month. They were only going to check for kidney and liver damage but when I told him that he was drinking a lot of water, he tested the pancreas and sure enough, it was his pancreas! He went on antibiotics for 10 days, more blood work, his levels came down a little but still in the high zone, but now his kidney’s elevated and in the high zone and the liver was up 50 points. We are on a wait and see, day by day and more blood work in another week. Let's hope that comes back good! Stay away from Purina! I am telling every one I know! We checked it again in a few days, then again a week later, and again yesterday. Each time it was higher than the next. The vet keeps asking me, "What could she be getting into?" That type of score indicates ingesting a toxin or poison of some kind. I could not think of or find anything that she could have eaten that would have made her ill. First, please allow me to express my sincere condolences at the loss of so many pets, and my profound gratitude for the entries listed here. I am a long time user of Beneful Original. I opened a new bag on 1/27/13, and after 3 feedings/days, my dog exhibited lethargy, fever and what looked like joint stiffness; she seemed to have trouble moving around. The morning after the first symptoms, I Googled the food, found the complaints here and immediately ceased use of the product.

I switched to homemade chicken and rice (20% chicken / 80% rice). Her lethargy and stiffness ceased after another day, but then she exhibited symptoms of a UTI. I took her right in to the vet, got the UTI diagnosed and started a 2 week course of antibiotics. The follow-up visit confirmed she's all clear, and she was back to her usual bratty, adorable, wholly loveable self.

Not a week later, I found out from a friend that my Facebook complaining inspired her to consider the Beneful as the source of her aging dog's illness. Sure enough, after a few days off that stuff, her dog was healthier than she had been in 3 years. I have my dog on Blue Buffalo now, and I've switched my cat from Purina One to Blue Buffalo as well. Purina products will never see the inside of my pantry ever again. Have emailed Purina and filed a complaint with the FDA.

Again, I offer my sincerest thanks for those that posted here. I have no doubt that you saved my dog's life.

He was vomiting, not eating, not drinking and extremely lethargic. All blood work and X-rays came back normal, and we were sent home Monday evening with a bottle of antibiotics that my pup could not keep down. After vomiting all night Monday night, I decided that I was going to take him in to our regular vet Tuesday morning. I took him in, and again, all blood work and X-rays were okay. They kept him for the day to administer an IV of fluids and anti-nausea medications to see if they could get him to eat. I picked him up last night and was told to immediately throw away the bag of dog food that I had purchased as the vet believed that it was contaminated with something that had made my dog very, very ill. He's home now but still not active or playing, and eating, but very little. I've got a follow up appointment with the vet tomorrow (Thursday) and hope that he's still doing well. Reviewed Feb. 19, 2013

My 6-year old bull-mastiff appears to have suffered near life ending illness and in hindsight appears Beneful could have played a role. My large dog stopped eating his higher end dog food and I had multiple bags of it. I was concerned that I had wasted money on expensive dog food. We would mix in table scraps to get him to eat it. When I finished off the bags I had, I decided to try to find another product he would eat. I tried multiple brands and he would eat most that were new to him but after a few days when he became used to them, he would turn up his nose to them. After trying multiple brands and varieties, I tried Beneful and he seemed to really enjoy it. I had no problem with it and he had no problem eating it. After we went through the entire first bag and looking back on it now, he would vomit occasionally, something he had never done in his first 5 1/2 years, but I did not think to associate it with the food he was eating. This dog is rather large and consumes all of his food rather rapidly as well as any leftovers we have from dinner, etc.

I bought an additional bag of Beneful as it appears he really like it. It was at this time my dog started to get really sick vomiting regularly sometimes 4-5 times per day. Still, it did not dawn on me that it could be the food. Then one morning after him throwing up all night long, he wouldn't get up and he was very sick, but I thought maybe he had gotten into something or eaten something he shouldn't have. For days, he was very sick and he had what appeared to be growths in his throat area, glazed over eyes with mucus like substance. He was losing weight rapidly. He went from 150 pounds to the point you could see virtually every bone in his body. At one point, he even needed help up and down the stairs and assistance in going out. He could no longer keep his food down. The growths were so swollen it was restricting his breathing. He was slowly suffocating. The white of his eyes were red similar to what I would imagine would happen when one was choked, strangled, etc.

It had previously been confirmed that this dog had shown signs of cancer cells in his body but nothing ever really surfaced. At the time it was first diagnosed, it was basically dormant from age 2 through 5. With regular checks, it stayed that way each time being told it could stay that way or could someday cause issue. He was still a very happy dog but very sick. I had convinced myself that these growths were ultimately the results of this cancer in his body. But the fateful morning came when he was so sick gasping for breath, I decided I had to probably bring him into vet to have him put down. Upon entering the clinic, all the employees at the clinic looked at the dog and were convinced he had lymphoma. They pointed out all his lymph nodes were swollen up and most likely the results of cancer he had been diagnosed with previously. They asked what I wanted to do. I wasn't really ready to say goodbye to my buddy and they said he could go to a specialist who could attempt to treat the cancer, but the estimate it could cost upwards of $5000, and that there was no guarantee. I was weighing my options do I say good-bye now or...

The vet had also mentioned that she could give him a high dose shot of Prednisone which could help the swelling and that along with regular doses of prescription, Prednisone could buy my dog anywhere from a week to a few months of happy time with his family. They weighed him and gave Nima general check up along with treatments he received that day. My 150-pound dog now weighed 85. He was weak and scrawny but happy so we took him home, gave him his meds as prescribed, and slowly the medicine appeared to be working. I was feeding him pureed chicken and rice in small mounts many times a day until the swelling had reduced enough to the point he could eat regular food. Once he resumed eating regular food, I was at the point where we were out of Beneful. He was eating mostly people food so I decided I would not buy any more dog food and would continue feeding table food people food. I would make him fresh rice every morning. We would portion out whatever we were eating for the day as mix-ins: steak, ground beef, chicken pork, etc.

After being on the Prednisone for a week, he became quite insatiable. He could not get enough water or food. This is a common side effect of Prednisone, but I was happy he was beginning to return to normal or as close to normal as one would expect from a dog who was basically given max of a few months to live. But it was also becoming a problem feeding him. I had no problem feeding him out leftovers or making him rice, pasta, etc. to help add filler. I decided I would keep doing this but needed to also add some dog food to help keep him full. I also decided I wasn't going to buy another large bag of expensive dog food as I just needed filler and he could still take a turn for the worse and I would have a large bag of dog food. So I went to the store and bought some cheap store brand dog food as it was only going to be mix in. I would make gravy and along with the other table food, it would be sufficient.

Meanwhile, the swelling was reduced so much that he was finally returning to normal, but I had still planned on it was his final day, week, month and like the vet said at some point, the cancer and the growths will win and the Prednisone will no longer help. I made peace with that and said if I could buy him time and buy us time, happy time for him and us to enjoy him that was good, and when he got sick when it no longer helped at least we had that extra time. So we went through the bag of cheap dog food as it was a smaller bag. I went to the store and bought him his favorite Beneful. He was eating like crazy, regaining much of his weight and cruising right along. I was giving him his mix-ins along with his Beneful and things started getting worse. He once again started vomiting and back to the way it was when he first started getting sick each day getting a little worse. Then the Prednisone prescription was almost up, so I decided we would use it up and let him go but he would stay as long as he didn't appear to be suffering. And because he could no longer eat the dry dog food, what I thought was going to be his last days, I resumed a full people food only diet for him and he once again slowly began to get better at this point.

I called the vet and asked for refill on his prescription and kept on giving it to him, but his hunger was out of control. He was getting back to normal with one exception; he was so hungry he would practically knock you down for food. It got so bad I once again decided this was too much and at the end of his latest script, I would let nature take its course. He was still eating table food, no dog food whatsoever and kept getting better. Then the Prednisone was done. I expected once it was out of his system, things would go back. He would get sick and I would take him over and have him put down. We bought our time and that was it. Only funny thing Prednisone no longer and people food only, he continued to get better and is back to his regular weight just about. I could not figure out what the story was if the Prednisone wasn't keeping him alive what could it be. Then this morning, I was on Snopes and I saw an old article from 2007 about people believing Beneful was causing their dogs illness and in many cases death. Purina disputed and said it was coincidental.

I wondered but then thought that was 5 years ago. But I decided to see if anything ever came of it and while researching, I realized that there have been many cases of people reporting the same thing in the later half of 2012 into the beginning of 2013, the same timeframe that I had dealt with it. Looking back now, I will never dispute the fact that my dog has had cancer. It was confirmed years ago but it was just there but laying dormant; add the fact that the dog had this and it finally came up. We were convinced that was it. But thinking back about giving him the Beneful, the discontinuing and then giving and ultimately discontinuing once again and he has made a full recovery with no visible signs of cancer the same way he was before he ever ate Beneful makes me really believe it was Beneful. Someday, cancer may take this dog or he may live a regular full life and it will remain there but never really take hold. I am just glad I had stopped the Beneful and that I have not realized it may be to blame and will never use the product again or anything from Purina for that matter.

We fed our very healthy, energetic Husky Beneful Healthy Weight. We found him laying a few feet away from his food bowl. He lost control of his bowels, his stomach bloated/flipped. He succumbed to a heart attack and died in front of my family as we watched helplessly. While looking at a rescue site, I saw a reference to the stories of other families who have had the same experience. This cannot be a coincidence that so many report the same symptoms and outcomes. I hope the FDA investigates this. No more families should have to go through this.

Our dog was not responding. No activity just laying around even falling asleep while sitting up with eyes rolling. I thought we were going to lose her. She's had constant bad breath and huge amount of weight loss. She did not want to eat or drink for days. Not one positive sign. When we brought her into the vet, they ran all tests, blood and x-ray. All I received back was her gland release. Wow, what a smell. But I took her home and had that pet owner feeling it was the food. I took away all and started her on pumpkin and bland food and then offered her wet food. She started to come around day by day showing improvement. After a month, I am proud to say she is back to normal but I was searching info in regards to the food. I will never buy the food again and truly do feel something with the product had a huge effect on our pets after constant reviews even through the media but no outcome. All one can do is go on one's gut and stay away!

My young, otherwise healthy dog, who is a member of my family, passed away this morning after having symptoms similar to those experienced by other people in the reviews here and elsewhere. My dog had been eating Purina Beneful on a daily basis for many months, which to my knowledge, would not be detrimental to his health. So why is it that when I simply search for Purina Beneful on Google, most of the results are about the dangers of feeding your pet this product, and that it is leading to pets deaths? Other dog foods do not have these search results in such a manner. I do not think it could be a coincidence after seeing what other dog owners have said, all within a recent timeframe. I had no idea about the dangers of Purina Beneful until it was too late, and now I have lost a friend and family member. I feel like the victim of a crime, and as protector of my family, I will not stand for this.

These reviews are not sensationalist, knee-jerk, over emotional reactions like you might find elsewhere on the internet. They are the truth, and they are coming from concerned dog owners that don't want to see more people and pets suffer like we have. Veterinarians, which are every consumer and pet owner's top resource for caring for their pet, are telling us to stay away from Purina Beneful. It doesn't get much clearer than that. I will never be foolish enough to blindly trust something so unregulated as the pet food industry again. Purina Beneful is poisoning our beloved pets, in many cases, to death. Purina is essentially committing violence against our families. We need to put an end to this now.

My parents have always fed their dogs Beneful for as long as I can remember. They had two small breed dogs that I now care for, and I've always fed them their usual Beneful IncrediBites. I recently adopted a Labrador-Shepherd mix in early December 2012 from the pound. He was on a science diet at the pound, and we continued that for a short while, but slowly introduced him to Beneful Healthy Choice by mixing the 2 together slowly until he was on Beneful only.

He showed the signs first. At first, I thought he might have been sick because of his nerves; settling in to a new home. He was vomiting within minutes after eating. He drank excessive amounts of water just to run and vomit right after. His stool was always loose. He was very lethargic and experienced weight loss. I took him to a vet, and they explained that he now had ulcers. They switched him to a healthy digestion formula from Iams. The smaller dogs have been showing signs after the first days of the year (2013) and are more intense. They couldn't keep their food down, they had diarrhea, lethargic, and experienced weight loss.

I heard about the recall yesterday at my nephew’s birthday party and was shocked that Beneful has had so many complaints and have failed to issue a recall. We trust this company with our pets and our family members’ health and well-being, and they aren't doing anything. I live in Georgia and have purchased the tainted dog food from both Kroger and Wal-mart. I am a manager at Wal-mart and will be doing everything I can to remove Beneful products from our shelves to prevent anymore illness and deaths. It'll be hard to do without an official recall, but I'll post reports on the shelves if I have to.

The symptoms others have cited - extreme thirst, vomiting, foamy loose yellowish stools - he had them all. Trips to the vet and subsequent tests revealed elevated liver enzymes. He was kept at the vet's and put on antibiotic IVs. He came home for a visit and declined before the day concluded. Back to the vet and further decline. He never lost his "smile," but he finally had to be put down. I started feeding my 11-year old Rhodesian Ridgeback, Charger, Beneful Healthy Weight dog food as my vet said he needed to lose weight. He ate the food for quite some time without issue. In early December 2012, he began to be a fussy eater, refusing his food regularly. I began supplementing the Beneful with Purina canned food, which enticed him to eat some. After a week or so, he began to vomit regularly. He started to drink more and more water and urinate a lot. He had accidents in the house, which he has never done. He was lethargic. We went to our regular vet who ran some blood tests and found a few of his vitals were elevated while others were too low. We did x-rays, which revealed nothing significant. We put him on antibiotics and hoped that they would clear his ailment.

After a week on the antibiotics, he continued to worsen. My vet suggested an internal medicine specialist who did an ultrasound and more blood tests. He believed that Charger had a kidney infection and protein diminishing ailments, but was too weak for a biopsy. (You can imagine that this is getting quite expensive). We put Charger on steroids along with medicine to help his kidney improve, medicine for his loose stool, antacids and probiotics. We began to see some improvement. At this time Charger had gone from 90 pounds to 64 pounds. We were feeding him KD dog food along with carrots, chicken and rice, and whatever I could get him to eat.

While browsing the Internet one morning (for a completely unrelated item), I saw a posting warning about the dangers of Beneful and that it was killing dogs. I did a simple Yahoo search for "Beneful killing dogs." I got thousands of results. The first of them was from Clarifications.com, which described 200+ dogs who had the exact symptoms that Charger had. I searched more and found that the same issue came up in 2007. I contacted Purina, Target (where I bought the food) and the FDA. Purina called me back and explained that they are aware of the complaints but have not found the cause of the issues and don't believe they are related to the food. When I asked why it was that 200+ dogs have died from these symptoms and that Beneful is the only connecting factor, I was told that they have not found any problem and they believe their food to be safe. Target called me back and told me that they would have their buyer of dog food draft a letter to Purina and see if they get more answers as a major customer than I did as an individual consumer. (I am waiting for that letter).

On Monday February 11 Charger was again refusing to eat. He was shaking and would not move off the couch. I took him to see the specialist once again. (There have been quite a few visits at this point. Only one visit showed improvement.) We ran more blood tests, gave Charger more sub-cutaneuos (?) fluids. I waited for the Dr to call me on Tuesday with the results. I left work early as I did not want Charger to be alone for too long. I found him unable to walk, shaking vigorously and looking very poor as a whole. I spoke with the specialist who explained that his blood tests revealed worse results. After much discussion with the vet and my family, I could not stand to see Charger suffering. I took Charger to the vet and had him put down. This was the most miserable decision I have ever had to make. I blame Beneful and Purina for this and find their denial of responsibility and refusal to recall their product outrageous. They would rather hurt and/or murder dogs than admit that they may have poisonous food in the market place. I am eager to join or start a class action suit against Purina for their negligence and arrogance.

I have a 10-year old Bichon. In November 2012, she had a semi-seizure early one morning. The vet could not exactly identify what exactly happened; however, the results of her blood test were shocking to me. Her cholesterol was 352 (normal is 92-324) not too high but over the max; however, her Triglycerides were 1,438 (normal is 29-291). It was explained to me that this could be a possibility as a trigger for her episode, having high levels of 'T' signifies that the blood is sticky and doesn't allow for enough oxygen to flow properly through her blood stream. Though this may not be related, she is having varying elevated levels pointing towards a compromised liver function.

The only food she received was Beneful small bites and sometimes a very small piece of milk bone when she comes in from outside. No bones, no scraps. I immediately threw away her dog food and started her on a prescription diet, along with liver supplements. I tested her blood again 1 month later. Her cholesterol was back in range at 254 and her Triglycerides were also back to normal at 187 (from 1,438). In mid/late January, we performed a liver function test and the results came back normal. I am continuing her supplements and a monthly testing to make sure. There was only one factor that contributed to her condition and that was Beneful dog food.

I also had a Miniature Schnauzer who passed at 15. I can't definitively say if this food contributed to her downhill spiral, but when the condition came up with my Bichon, I couldn't help putting some pieces together. Even though she did have some other health problems, the months prior to her passing, she was in agony. She too was being fed Beneful. She ended up having recurring episodes of pancreatitis and other severe digestive problems, symptoms apart from her other heath issues. She started to refuse her food and then spiraled down.

I know it was her time; however, I can't help but think the food accelerated/attributed to her being so sick at the end. I thought about putting the whole emotional story but I think facts speak louder. I would suggest that anyone who is feeding their dog this food, have them immediately tested. My hope is that someone or some agency will launch a full investigation and recall the products. We have a duty to keep our pets healthy and the industry has a duty to provide healthy foods.

Last night I was on the phone with my mom talking about our 4 legged children, and I mentioned that we used to feed our dogs Beneful. But then, when Proxy started getting sick, she wouldn't eat it anymore. My mom told me to go online and see what was going on with Beneful, and how most vets and rescues will tell you not to feed your dogs this food. That's when I found all these reviews. She had all of the same symptoms that everyone else has described. Frequent vomiting, that smelled like it came out the other end, drinking constantly, and dropping weight quickly.

This started in August of 2010. The vet prescribed her everything from digestive aids to anti-anxiety meds. I’ve never even thought to question the food. We switched to Kibbles and Bits in the last few weeks of her life. She would only eat small portions though and finally succumbed on January 29th, 2011. The thing that worries me most about this whole mess is that looking at these reviews, these complaints started in 2008. I really hope something is done about this. That's the main reason I'm adding this review, even 2 years later, and I will talk to my local grocery stores to see if they will stop carrying this food. We walked 2 to 3 miles a day and played frisbee daily. She was full of life and by all rights, had many years left to live. She has been eating Beneful for a couple of years, but it seems that a recent bag may have caused serious digestive problems and seizures. She started throwing up the food and became more lethargic - drinking water (at least a gallon a day). She was treated for bacterial colitis within the last few months and given Science Diet (prescription). She recovered and I, like others, put her back on Beneful.

After a few weeks, she began vomiting again and losing energy. I switched her to straight canned food, but apparently, a little too late. One morning at 3:00 am, she began seizing over and over and throwing up her food - after hours of visit to the vet showing that she likely had liver and possibly kidney failure. Sadly, he informed me she would not recover - heartbreaking. I'm completely sure it was the food, but after reading the numerous complaints and similarities, I can't dismiss that there may be some bad or tainted food. All I can conclusively say is that my new, six-week-old Border Collie will never taste Beneful.

I couldn't help but think about my friend's dog, Kirby, who went from a happy and healthy middle-age dog to dead in about two weeks - with all the same symptoms I had read about. When I asked, sadly, the answer was yes. Beneful had been Kirby's diet. I couldn't get over the fact that Purina had to know about all the complaints, yet they weren't doing anything. I grew up with Purina, their products were always in our house. I felt betrayed by a brand I had trusted my whole life and wanted to ask them some questions. I ended up on the Beneful Facebook page, and this is where part two of my complaint starts.

When I got there, I realized I was not alone. Many people were there asking questions and telling their stories. I asked a question and was rewarded with a copy and paste answer, telling me there was nothing wrong and that they were all "rumors". I quickly realized that was all I was going to get from them. Then, I noticed that certain posts were disappearing within minutes of being posted. Weird. It became all too clear when I noticed that the moderators were reprimanding many of the people that were claiming Beneful had caused their dog harm, threatening to remove their posts and even block them from the page.

I decided to be fairly quiet so I would not get blocked. In the last week, I have watched a very large number of people who believe Beneful hurt their dog be blocked from the site, while Beneful supporters have done childish things, such as stealing pictures of complainants' pets to use as their own, and downright criminal things like stealing entire profiles and identity theft, yet they were allowed to stay. I simply cannot express my utter shock that Purina seems to be trying to sweep this under the rug by silencing the people trying to share their very real stories. Somehow, I expected more from a (formally) beloved name like Purina.

We took him to the emergency vet and they told us that his liver enyzmes were extremely high and he was having liver failure. They asked us if he got into antifreeze. "Absolutely not," I told them. We were concerned that maybe he had a blockage, either urinary or in his stomach, so we took him to the emergency room. They took X-rays and did not see a blockage. They said it must have been his diet. They asked if there were any changes, and I told them I just had switched him to Beneful. They gave him an IV because he was dehydrated and they told me to put him on a bland diet.

I did and, within a week, he was feeling better. I have never put him back on that food and don't intend to, but I am very disappointed in Purina for not pulling this brand of food, and if this one is so bad, is the regular Purina bad also? I used to have faith in this company but now, I am totally concerned. Purina, stand up and take responsibility for this. Shame on you! My sympathies to all who lost their beloved pets because of something so preventable.

We started feeding our 8-year old Chihuahua Beneful Incredibites at the beginning of November, following an oral surgery. He was very healthy (the vet did bloodwork prior to the surgery and everything was great) and recovered from the surgery quickly. He was fine with it. There was nothing weird going on with the food. He was pooping a lot more than usual, but we attributed it to another brand of snacks. In retrospect, we should have stopped feeding him the Beneful at this first sign of trouble. Unfortunately, we bought another bag of Beneful Incredibites two weeks ago and we started feeding it to him late last week.

At first, he was just pooping a lot again but yesterday, he had diarrhea and was vomiting. He had a high fever and was constantly shaking from the chills. We took him to the vet who kept him for the day with IV fluids. The bloodwork today shows he has a severe infection with an extremely high white blood cell count, high neutrophil count to be specific. We are very worried about him and we will never feed him Beneful food again. The WBC count and his symptoms are very similar to the cases of other pets I have been reading about. We are keeping the food so it can be tested. This is awful. If there is even any question about the food the company produces, the company should be doing something about it, not ignoring the complaints and allowing more pets to become ill and die.

I had always fed our two dogs Natural Balance or Blue Buffalo until we ran out one day and I decided to grab a small bag of something from CVS to get us through until I hit the Petco/Petsmart. I had no idea which one to choose, so I relied on the packaging to make my decision. Beneful, by far, seemed to be the most healthy one on the shelf. Well, our dogs loved it. So being the indulgent mom I am, I picked up the big bag from the pet store and basically switched them at that point. Our 15 lb Minpin started having seizures on a regular basis shortly afterwards, which turned to cluster seizures within a few months. Our 80 lb Weimaraner mix could hardly walk. She was like an old lady. Neither of them had any energy and they barfed a lot.

My husband insisted it was the food but I thought he was crazy, so I launched a Google investigation into commercial dog foods to prove to him he was wrong. Well, much to my surprise, I discovered that we had been slowly killing our dogs with this stuff. In my research, I found many recipes for home made dog food and we made the decision to go that route. I just wanted to know exactly what they were eating. It's well over a year later and they are back to their normal selves. I mixed in a little Blue Buffalo kibble with their home made and they literally dance for their dinner. Purina should be ashamed of themselves for what they are doing, false advertising at its worst. Families who love their pets are paying the consequences, while Purina is making a fortune. Something needs to be done to stop them!

I urge everyone on this site to file a complaint with the FDA. If you truly believe that Purina caused the death of your beloved pet, that is the only way this will change. I just lost my pet last night and I think this food could be to blame as my young Choc lab was so healthy but died so quickly even after hours of emergency room vets trying to save him. I won't make a claim that Beneful killed my dog but when the autopsy comes back, his food tested and in my heart I know I am right, I will be filing a complaint with the FDA. I hope no other dogs die in the meantime.

I was feeding my female boxer, Blanca, Beneful for 3+ years. I found out Friday night of how bad of a product it is on Facebook. A friend of mine was putting a comment on their Facebook page on how his dog almost died from eating Beneful. I googled Beneful to find out more. I was shocked and appalled to find out the hundreds of people commenting on how either their dogs died or were very sick. I was saddened by this and noticed some of the symptoms their dogs had were similar to what Blanca has been experiencing. A couple of summers ago, Blanca was at a dog park and pricked her paw. We took her to the vet and they prescribed some topical cream spray. The wound healed but she started to lick it. Years later, she continued to lick her paw and it was twice the size of the others. I thought she had developed a habit. Her hair is white and she licked it so often that the color changed from white to a pinkish-brown color. Her saliva had oxidized the color of her hair.

Boxers aren't generally known for shedding but she sheds so much hair that it looks like we groom dogs for a living in our home. She also vomits often. I thought this was normal since dogs do vomit. I realized that all three are from the food! She's not supposed to shed at all or if she does, very little. The swollen paw and her constant vomiting is from the harmful ingredients that other dogs are dying from. I saw a lot of people's post on here stating that when they took their dog to the vet, asking them if they had been fed antifreeze. I am deeply saddened to hear all the stories of dog owners losing their precious family members to this poison Beneful calls dog food. The very next day I found out, I threw the rest of Beneful away and got her good dog food that is all-natural with no by-products or poison. I'm so glad I was able to find out in time before it killed my baby girl.

Hi. In the summer, I adopted a 2-month old Jack Russell puppy. I took her to the vet for her first check up. The next day, the vet told me she was very healthy. When she went to her second appointment (a month later), again, the vet told me she was healthy. Two weeks after that, I noticed that she was getting skinny. I assumed it was a growth spurt and that she would be a chubby thing in a few weeks. On the day she would be turning 4 months, she was coughing up blood. I took her to the vet, and the vet explained that she was in such a poor state that there wasn't really anything we could do. They explained to me that we could do all the tests to find out what was wrong, but the real issue was that she was coughing up blood, she’s really dehydrated, and her body temperature was very hot. On top of that, she lost 25% of her weight in 3 weeks.

As I said, I thought she was going through a growth spurt (she was my second pup, my first is a large breed and she went through the natural up and down in weight while her body grew). I guess, because I saw her everyday, her body didn't look that sick to me because she did what every other dog does; she plays, eats, drinks, sleeps, and goes to the bathroom. She was only 4 months old, and the vet told me there was nothing they could really do unless I wanted to spend $10,000-$15,000 to try and make her healthy again, but there is no guarantee I would get to bring my baby home. I can't put her down. I didn't have it in me.

I ended up going to the OSPCA in my town, and I surrendered her (that was a very hard thing to do, I felt like I was giving up on her). The reason why I did it was because I didn't have the money and I couldn't just put her down because I didn't have the funds. Doing this, I gave up all my rights to her. If she got better, I wouldn't know whether I could I readopt her. About a month later, I emailed an employee at OSPCA and told them that I understood that I wouldn't be able to see her again, but I needed closure. I needed to know if she made it or not. The lady called me back personally. She looked in the file and found out that just a couple of hours after I left, my baby passed away. They said she was in so much distress.

I still haven't forgiven myself for surrendering her. Anyway, hearing all these stories about pets getting ill, and even some dying, makes me feel that’s what happened to my baby. I tried a few foods and this was the only one that she would eat. I just can't understand if the product is going into question, whether it’s safe or not. Why wouldn't you let your customers know? Why would you keep it on the shelves? Why wouldn't you do a recall? How many other individuals need to lose their companions before you do something? I know my vet never said it was the food, but we did the test to find out because of her state at hand. I wish I did do the tests so that if it was linked to Beneful, I would have solid proof for others. Since I don't know 100%, and I will never know, I can't risk it for my other babies. I'm going to be changing my dog and cat food. I can't go through this again.

So we switched her to Natural Choice. She has not thrown up since. It's not fun watching your dog throw up every time she eats. In the beginning of November, I switched my dog to Beneful by Purina. Please take note that there is a second part to my story because Purina has killed many of my pets within the last year. Purina is owned by Land O' Lakes, the same company that makes Your Food and many other brands such as Mazuri.

Well, after switching my dog to Beneful, she was fine for the first bag. After that bag, I bought another in the beginning of December. After buying the bag and feeding some to my dog, she started vomiting and had diarrhea. The next day, she would not eat the food, and she was always a pig. I left to work the next morning and came home to her dead. I figured it was because she was older and there were no recalls at the time on the food, at least none that I can find. Then months later, I stumble across an article that Purina did not publish, nor has a recall been issued. It seems like they do not seem to care about your pets or their health.

Earlier last summer, I was feeding Mazuri rat feed to my rat collection. The food I received was from a batch made in May 2012. I received this bag in June and started feeding it in July or August, I believe, when all of a sudden my rats stopped eating the food and many immediately were found dead. It wasn't for weeks later that I found out about the recall. In fact, I went back to my supplier and Mazuri/Purina had not even let them know and they were still selling it! My entire collection had to be euthanized and I had lost all my rats. These rats were not only pets, but they provided offspring that helps support my family financially. I lost everything and it took me months to get back on track. I did receive a measly $100 check for this issue, but my pets are still dead. Stay away from them unless you like to gamble with your pets’ life. I've given them enough tries and this is it.

We had a 6-year-old Beagle mix. Last summer (June or so), he started scratching uncontrollably. We thought he had fleas and did everything known to man to stop it. His fur was falling out in big chunks and he was not near as active as he had been. We took him to the vet who put him on Science Diet for 2 weeks. He seemed to get better. She gave him a steroid shot and steroids and antibiotics. She said it appeared to be a skin problem. After the 2 weeks, we put him back on the Beneful. Within another 2 weeks, we had to have him put to sleep. He was using the bathroom in the house (something he never did), he was coughing up white foam, stopped eating almost all together, and just laid around. He completely changed from the active dog we had to one who was so sick that the vet did not know what was wrong with him and advised us to put him down.

I am heartbroken. He was my boy and my 11-year-old is devastated. We never imagined it was the Beneful, but after reading this we realize he had most of the symptoms that other's pets have had. He had small "nodules" for the lack of a better word on his body as well. The vet told us when we had him put to sleep that he could have cancer or heart disease or pneumonia. They did not know, just that he was too ill to get better. I am so outraged at Purina for not pulling this dog food immediately when the first person complained! My precious Lucky might still be here if they had! We thought that Beneful was a good food since it came from Purina. We lost our family member because it wasn't! Now we don't have the food because we gave it away right after he died. I am so sad!

I have heard these stories before and felt that they couldn't be true. It's Purina. It's one of the biggest pet food companies out there. Then I started thinking about issues my dogs have had in the past. I've fed them all Beneful. I've switched off a few times when they seemed to get a case of diarrhea but after a while, went back to it. After reading these comments about Beneful, I am seeing similarities with symptoms and sadly the loss of my dogs. My first loss was a Harlequin Dane, not throwing up or diarrhea, her system just started shutting down. She was dying of liver failure. We put her down.

My second loss a year later was a Black Great Dane. She lost control of pooping, would just drop bundles, not even knowing she was doing it, losing bladder consistency. We put her down. I have a mixed bred who has so many issues, along with Lyme disease but he has the tumors, skin tabs and dark purple rashes. I have two boxers, the 3 year old will urinate in her sleep sometimes or she'll get sick for it seems like no reason, either vomiting or diarrhea. They all ate Beneful for the majority of their lives. That stops now. I will not risk my animals, my companions' lives, on the chance that Beneful can kill them.

I wish I knew how many animals were affected health wise and life wise sooner. It's not about the money for the vet bills, it's about quality of life for them, it's about the pain of seeing them sick and not knowing why and it's about the loss, the unnecessary loss of these beloved friends and companions. It just breaks my heart. How do you stop a company, a mega company, from this type of callous disregard for the well being of the animals they are supplying food to? Deplorable. I'm going to purchase Buffalo Blue first thing in the morning. Shame on Beneful and Purina.

A few weeks passed, and she seemed to be losing weight. I bought some can food thinking she would definitely eat that. She refused to eat so I knew she was not good.

The next morning I brought her to her vet, and she had lost 3lbs. He kept her for blood work. That afternoon, I went to pick her up, and he stated that her blood work came back bad. Her kidneys were barely working so she was in kidney failure. She ended up staying at the vet for a week with IV fluids to try to get her kidney to function again. She started having seizures and her blood work did not get any better. After a week of high hopes and heartache, we had to put her to sleep. She was healthy and happy up to a month before her death. She never was fed anything different nor was she around anything that could have harmed her. She ate toxins, and I believe Purina is responsible for all these related cases. She passed away December 16th, and I still have the bag of dog food. I would love for it to be tested. We need answers!

In November of 2011, we took him off of it, but we were too late. He fought until February. Had I known that this was happening to others, I would have done so much more to prove it. I have filed complaints, and like I said before, I don't want your money. Cooper was absolutely priceless. He was my best friend, my child.

I want you to look into this closer so nobody has to suffer what I have suffered and carry the guilt I feel for killing him by feeding him your food. I am confident that if I have gotten him off of it at the first sign of trouble (ear infections and cysts), I would still have my boy; and I would not have a piece of my heart gone. This is the absolute worse way to see your dog die. He had kidney failure, ruptured ulcer, and loss of back legs. I was asked if he could have been fed anti-freeze. Please, this is not coincidence. Do something. Cooper would be 6 next Thursday. I miss him so much."

As a result of this I have set up a new Facebook page. Please join if you can! I've been feeding our dog (Heown's almost 2 yrs old) Beneful his entire life. Recently though, he's been vomiting almost daily (just some foamy stuff and no food) and then he's ok. I was attributing his vomiting to some grass that he would eat on our walks, etc. However, yesterday, he did something he has never done. He began urinating by the front door (where it seemed it was uncontrollable). He is housebroken, and we have our morning routine. He sleeps in my bed, we get up together, and he waits patiently while I throw something on to take him out. The same thing happened this morning. I got up before him and hurried to get dressed to take him out. However, he didn't even make it down the steps to go in front of the door. He just peed all the way down while I was putting his leash on and when I got him out.

I did some research and found out that this is one of the signs of illness (uncontrollable release of bladder). Today is the 2nd day without Beneful. I gave him eggs and rice last night, and an egg/carrot omelet this morning. I have been monitoring him. If he's still not right by the end of the week, a trip to the vet will be necessary. Although it's unnerving that Beneful hasn't come forward, I am thankful to have found a blog here where I know I'm not alone in this. I hope everyone whose pets have been ill will get better as I know how important they are. Hopefully, we will learn more about this, and soon; before any other pets get sick.

I thought I was having bad luck, that god kept giving me dogs who ended up being sick because he knew I would take care of them - until now! I had all beagles and all of them were sick. First one I lost was to cancer; second one, toxic liver enzymes; and now the third to bladder cancer, and she also had seizures most of her life. I have one other beagle who is still alive but has numerous growths on his body. Just recently, I changed their food after hearing from people about food being a big factor on health. Since then, the growths on my dog aren't as red, and there is one that was getting infected and now is going away. If this is the cause of all my dogs having to be put to sleep (2 in two years! One was 4 years old and the other 8), I just want to say the pain you have cost me and the thousands and thousands I have spent in vet bills is something you will have to live with!

My big, beautiful dog became ill on Jan. 3, 2012. He had to have been the sweetest, kindest dog the world had ever seen. He was a certified Good Samaritan. All he ever wanted to do was make people smile. He never did one bad thing in his life. Everyone who ever met him immediately fell in love with him, even people who didn't like dogs. He was the mascot and star bell ringer for the Salvation Army. He babysat the little kids while their parents were filling out applications. He stole the show everywhere he went.

On Jan. 3, 2012, just two weeks after his work with the red kettles was over, he came in the house and passed out. I immediately took him to the vet. He had a fever of 104. The vet gave him an antibiotic shot and pills, drew blood to test, and sent him home. The next day, he seemed much better. The third day, he was much worse. I rushed him back to the vet. His blood tests showed very high liver spikes. His skin was beginning to yellow. He could not walk or eat a thing. He had been throwing up all his food for three days. That night, he died in the middle of the night, two days before his 6th birthday. How could such a beautiful, healthy, happy dog get so sick and die so fast? The vet didn't even have time to do much for him. His diet had been Beneful all his life. Now, I think that is what caused his liver to fail. I still cry every day for him.

I have been feeding my Dal Beneful mixed with other food for over 4 years. She has developed the skin tags as mentioned in several posts here. I mixed up a batch of the mixed food in late December and immediately started dealing with my dog’s occasional vomit. Not too unusual. Then, this last week, I have been dealing with my dog’s constant diarrhea. It is so bad that when she gets up from lying down, she leaks. I stopped feeding her the food, and within a couple of days, all's better. Thank god I just mixed it in thinking it was "beneful" to her health. Stupid me!

We have had Shih Tzus for the past 7 years, of various ages, the entire time feeding them Beneful. The oldest is now 7. He has been battling the exact skin nodules, cancer screenings (all negative), continuous itching, pain and now the loss of full mobility in his hind legs. If it were not for the heart this dog has, making me a believer daily, I would have given up. Our newest two are 8 mo. old; one has developed breathing issues and ear infections, out of the blue, in the past 2 months, unexplained to the vet. My vet, as well as the others posting here, have been clueless, although we all have the same symptoms. I recently bought a new bag of food 4 days ago. It has a large zip lock. The 3 dogs on average ate 3, maybe 4 cups of food a day. They, upon opening of this batch, have decreased to one cup overall, if that, per day. I am zipping this bag, marking it and holding it for further investigation.

I had started seeing reviews of Beneful making dogs sick about a month ago on Facebook. I didn't think anything of it really, because both of my dogs had eaten dry Beneful food for at least a year now. Well, a few days ago, the dogs started having loose stools and going in the house, which they never normally do. I was a little bit worried but then the next morning, my daughter witnessed my black Lab vomiting and found 3 more piles of dog poop where they had gone in the house.

I immediately took them to the vet. They took stool samples and found nothing. The vet gave me medication for diarrhea and vomiting. I immediately stopped feeding them Beneful and started them on another (non-Purina) dog food. Since there was nothing else wrong with them and the vet found nothing else, all I am left with is the common denominator - their food.

We have been buying Beneful Healthy Radiance for our three dogs (2 labs and a blue heeler) for over 4 years and have never had a problem until now. We bought a medium size bag of Healthy Radiance at our local Walmart in Floresville, Texas on 1-25-13. We noticed our two labs were looking very bloated and not as playful as usual. Our blue heeler today had a gurgly stomach and wasn't eating. Our oldest lab has thrown up for the past two days and can keep nothing down. She has also been panting like crazy and drinking water more than usual.

By chance, we noticed on Facebook that other pet owners are experiencing the same problems with Beneful. My heart breaks for those who have lost their lovely family members (yes, pets are family members) due to eating this batch(?) of dog food. Since I changed their food to Blue Buffalo, they are not developing cysts anymore and the smaller ones are actually disappearing. No one can convince me that the cysts weren't from the Beneful.

My 2 dogs have been on Beneful wet dog food for a few years. In December 2012, I added Beneful dry food to their diet. Within hours of feeding the dry food, both dogs got sick. One dog was more violently sick, throwing up, had diarrhea, was very bloated, could not stand up. I took him to the ER and he had pancreatitis. I got him an ultrasound and they found many organs enlarged and liver disease. My other dog also go sick at the same time. She had an ultrasound and she had liver disease and enlarged organs. However, she had severe blood in her urine and the vets found E. Coli in her urinary tract and kidney. There was definitely a great deal of concern about Beneful. I ended up returning the Beneful to PetsMart but that is nothing compared to the thousands of dollars I have spent on vet/hospital bills.

She has really improved, but I was getting some dog food for my other two, and noticed the new meals from Beneful and got them for her. I had fed her a couple (one will last several days as she gets 3 oz each feeding) and on the third one, I noticed a bright blue "object," which I pulled out of the food. It looks like aquarium gravel - for lack of better description - and had a very sharp edge to it. I have set it aside, mentioned it to PetSmart, who said I need to report it, but didn't say where. I am lucky in that none of my animals are showing signs of illness; but in finding foreign objects in the food, I tossed the rest of them. I will go back to cooking meals for her. I will watch her closely for any signs of kidney issues, but think I may be a lucky one. Never again will I buy Beneful though, and it is going on my Facebook page to warn others.

We fed Koda, our German Shepherd, Beneful for years before his death. We noticed he didn't seem himself weeks before he died. When it did happen, his whole body shut down. His kidneys failed; it was horrible. The vet could not give us any explanation and we could not afford to look into more, but the only thing that makes any sense is the food we were giving him. He was a very healthy 90-lb, 5-year-old beautiful boy. There was nothing else wrong. I feel all these complaints need to be looked into and get this food tested and taken off the shelves. It's horrible to think that what our family went through will continue to keep happening to other families. These poor animals being a victim to the corporate money hungry **, they didn't deserve this. Something needs to be done now!

We rushed him to the vet and by then, his temp and blood pressure were low and he had bloody diarrhea. The vet said he was in pain and had no idea what was wrong. We decided not to put him through invasive tests and sadly, we had to let him go.

One month to the day, my 6-year old shih tzu had sudden onset of vomiting and bloody diarrhea. She could not walk or hold her head up. We rushed her to the vet who said her temp was down. They put her on IV fluids. Two days later, she was able to come home but still has not much interest in food, but at least she is keeping what little she eats down. We keep a very dog safe house. Nothing to get into and they are indoor dogs. I know this is no coincidence. Then someone sent me the article about Beneful. That is what my dogs always eat. We have 3 dogs: 2 cavaliers and a poodle. Our poodle has eaten Beneful for a long time without any problems. We adopted the 2 cavaliers just before Christmas and started feeding them the same food. Last week, one of the cavaliers became very sick. She could not keep anything in her stomach. We took her to the vet, and he immediately asked what we fed her. When we told him that she has eaten Beneful, he ran the blood test. He confirmed that it has to be the food. With the medication and a bland diet, she is better now. The upset stomach is gone, and the blood in her stool has finally stopped.

Two days later, our poodle, which has always been very healthy, began to go through the same things. She would not eat, even though we had changed foods; she was throwing up and had bloody stools. Once again, we went back to the vet. Again, the vet said that it was due to the food. We are very lucky that we went to the doctor early. It has cost us nearly $500.00 in vet bills to make our dogs better. I will never buy that food again and strongly encourage anyone to stop using this product. It is not safe and has not been recalled even though so many animals are getting sick. It would be nice if the manufacturers of this product repay us all that we have had to spend on the vet bills.

I have been feeding our dog Bella Beneful dog food for several years now. I bought it because it was cheaper than a lot of other brands. She, in the last few months, has lost weight and is not as energetic as she used to be. We chalked it up to her getting old and didn't think anything of it. I took her to the vet about 2 months ago for a check-up and to get her looked at as she has developed a large lump about the size of a baseball on her chest area. The vet told me that this was normal and that it was not a concern. Okay, I thought great. Recently, she has been vomiting although not a lot. I have noticed that she has been drinking a lot more water than normal. Another thing is she is losing her hair even during the winter. It is falling out in clumps. I saw all these complaints on Facebook and the light went on.

I feel awful. Thank God she is still okay but I'm never feeding her a Purina product again. I called the company to ask them some questions and the lady on the phone told me this was the first she has heard about there being a problem with the product. That answer in itself tells me that there is a big problem. I called my vet. They said to stop feeding Beneful to Bella as they have some deep concerns with this product. I will be filing a complaint with the FDA if my vet said to stop and that they have concerns there is a big issue.

As it turns out, my other Great Dane is also in liver failure from having eaten that same poison! We need to be notifying the FDA of the problems we are having so they will investigate. Otherwise, people will continue to have the same problems we are having and nothing will be addressed! I read that although this site has had over 325 complaints, the FDA has only received a handful, not nearly enough to warrant an investigation. Please do right by your pets and fellow pet owners and report what's going on to the proper authorities. They request that you fill out separate reports for each animal affected. If you need to do that, there is a "clone report" option.

Don't let other dogs get sick and die because Beneful was not turned in to the proper authorities. They need to pay for the damages they've caused and ensure it doesn't happen anymore!

My dog, Mclovin, was fed Beneful by my dog sitter while I was gone over the holidays. When I came home and picked him up, my sitter said he would vomit occasionally. I didn't think much of it, he is a dog. His appetite was fine and he acted normal, he would just vomit on occasion. I took him to the ER after a couple days (my vet wasn't open on New Year's) of this and they did blood work and looked for an obstruction with X-rays. Nothing looked abnormal.

A couple of days later, still vomiting about 4 times a day, I took him to my normal vet. They did more blood work and an ultrasound. They did not find anything abnormal. The source of the vomiting needed to be found though so they opened him up to manually look for an obstruction and take tissue samples. What they found was Mclovin's entire GI tract was swollen and inflamed. They asked me if he had been poisoned or if he had eaten anything he shouldn't have. My dog sitter is awesome and I would never let him get into anything he shouldn't. I said, "No, he hasn't eaten anything that would hurt him."

Mclovin's vomiting started to intensify. He couldn't hold anything down and his stool started to turn from solids to liquids. He stopped going #2 shortly after simply because he wasn't eating. Tissue samples from Mclovin's surgery came back and the vet had no idea what this was/what was wrong so he suggested I go to a specialist in Boston.

This is now week 3 of Mclovin being sick. He has lost almost 10 pounds and could hardly move; he was so weak. Seizures started to occur occasionally at this point. Every couple of days, he would have a 30-second seizure. I took him to an internal medicine specialist in Boston. They did blood work, an endoscopy, and took tissue samples from Mclovin's GI tract. The results they got back they couldn't describe. We wanted to do another round of tests but Mclovin died a few days later. He had a 20-minute seizure and his heart/breathing stopped when he came out of it.

My vet here in New Hampshire and in Boston chalked all of this up to cancer. I accepted this with reservation, because it seemed like they were just coming up with something because they didn't know.

After reading all of the other dog owner's experiences, I know what killed my dog. It was the dog food he ate a month before he died. There are so many of us with the same symptoms and experiences. There is no doubt in my mind what killed him. If you have experienced something similar, please contact me by email. We are all very angry. One of us can do a little damage, but if we can focus our collective effort to a point, we can prevent this from happening again.

I accidentally came across this article about Beneful. All comments are exactly what happened to my 7-year-old Min Pin that should have lived twice that age. I fed him Beneful his whole lifetime, but when he got older I switched to Beneful Healthy Weight. Within 2 years, he gained weight and I only fed him twice a day and not as much as recommended on the feeding instructions. He was a very active dog until switching to this product. He went from a healthy 9 lbs. to 18 lbs. within two years.

My dog never was fed table scraps or anything human, only Beneful. He first started having what we thought were seizures, shaking of his head, staring off into space, and eyes glazing over. That went on for a couple of months. Then, we noticed his stools were starting to loosen. He eventually stopped eating and couldn't get enough water to drink. He started losing control of his bladder, having accidents in the house, never lifting his leg but just standing and staring at us while he peed right next to us. He laid around all the time.

Within a week, which ended up being my Damian's final week, he needed help going to the bathroom and, overnight, it was like his belly grew so big it would pop if we touched him. We rushed him to the vet, did several X-rays, put him on intravenous fluids. The poor guy couldn't get up. He developed bloat, was vomiting and gagging, had loose stools. The vet could only say that it looked like he was in kidney failure but with no explanation.

With all that I have read from others posts, I am totally convinced Beneful is what took my young Min Pin's life. I will never feed any of my fur babies that brand ever again and I will never encourage anyone else to feed this to their own. R.I.P. Damian ... If I would have only known then what I know now!

My 7-year-old Akita, Sadie, ate Beneful for many years. We started when Sadie was still a puppy. He was playful then and finally, had a healthy weight. We noticed last summer, sometime in September 2012, that she developed what looked like a sun burn on her nose. All of her fur fell out, and she had blisters all over her snout. We treated her with triple antibiotic ointment and it only helped heal it to the point that it scabbed over; but it never went away. We then noticed a very foul odor coming from her, even after bathing her, the smell would not go away. We have seen her go from playful to lethargic, and she refuse to get up and go outside in a snap of a finger. She then started having an awful odor in her urine, along with pure blood and large blood clots when she went to pee.

At first, I thought that it was because of her coming into cycle, but then realized it was in her urine. I called the vet and he took her in. His findings were as follows: (1) she has lupus, which is an autoimmune disorder; (2) she licks her feet until they are raw and bleeding; (3) she has 0, yes zero, red blood cells, and (4) her organs are killing her. He gave her a shot of antibiotic, steroids, and sent her home with an antibiotic. Awesome! She started looking good and playful again. Oh, and let me mention that we changed her food to Blue Wilderness; it’s made for this type of breed of dog (akita, wolf, husky etc.). It’s gluten-free, has no animal byproducts, and has a lot of fruits and veggies. She loved it! We couldn’t get over how she had turned around. And then, she got really sick again. I took her back to the vet. He said that she would have to be on steroids for the rest of her life.

Ultimately, the steroids will kill her, and they will speed up her kidney and liver failure; or we can take her off the steroids and let her live for as long as she can without it. We decided to give her the steroids because they would prolong her life a little bit (I know, sounds backwards). So now, here we are, January 31, 2013. Our beautiful girl has become lethargic again. She’s drinking excessively, peeing blood again, and she’s unable to control her bladder in the house. We had to come to a family decision that the best thing for her will be to put her to sleep because she is clearly in so much pain. She cannot even get up on her own. I cannot stand the thought of having to do this, but I also cannot sit and watch her suffer. This is all thanks to what I believe are effects from long term use of Beneful. If one person reads this and 1 dog lives, then I believe that our Sadie’s suffering, and soon passing, will not be in vain. Please stop feeding this poison to your pets. God speed!

I started with the puppy brand, then the regular healthy weight brand and then about 1 year before all of his issues, I switched him to the Healthy Radiance. Prior to the horrible issues we endured for 4 months, he had skin tags that had to be removed and ear infections all the time. In September of 2011, he started to fly-bite. In November of 2011, he started having diarrhea consistently, not eating and getting really sick. Right away, we changed his food but it was way too late. We did everything we possibly could and over $5,000 later, I had to put him to sleep when his ulcer ruptured in his stomach and his kidney wasn't processing his urine causing him to basically pee pus and go into kidney failure.

He lived until February 27th after turning 5 on February 7th. The vet said it looked like he had eaten something (like a foreign object but there was no foreign object) causing his tummy to have two separate areas which is why his appetite went way down. I am so heartbroken. He was so young and so healthy. He never ate anything different, never got into anything or digested foreign objects. On the 27th of February, I had to rush him to the emergency vet. This was not my normal vet as it was an emergency and so they asked if he could have digested anti-freeze or eaten something foreign although they could not find any signs of a foreign object. And as soon as they heard what I had been feeding him after the ultrasound and the biopsy, it looked like a light bulb lit up in her eyes and she knew exactly what had caused it.

I asked what I could do and they said there was really nothing unless there is a recall issued or something and I find out the food is dangerous. The worse way to lose my pup ever (I blame myself daily for killing him because I fed him this junk) and again, he was so young. I am only doing this now because I had no clue this was happening to other dogs. I was also feeding him the Wagon Train treats about a month prior to him going downhill. This needs to be pulled from the shelves before even more dogs die.

Purina killed my dogs. Why is this company allowed to sell this dog food when it kills our pets? My dogs were my life. The Purina company will go down for this. I will do everything in my power to see that my dogs will get justice. After reading all the complaints, how are they allowed to do this? This company is pure evil and full of greed. They care nothing about our pets. This is why they use all these chemicals that are not necessary in the dog foods. Stop buying Purina. Boycott these animal killers, cheap crap filled with poison. I am so glad I stumbled upon this from Facebook. We usually feed our Frenchie Science Diet only. But one afternoon, we ran out and were in a bind, so we ran to the supermarket and picked up a small bag of Beneful to get us by until we could get back to the pet store. Thank God, it was a small bag! After about a week, our li'l guy Bosco was not himself. We then picked up the Science Diet and he still wouldn't eat it. He was already so sick by that point. He wouldn't eat and was very lethargic. We waited another few days to just see if it was some type of little bug or something, but then he started with the vomiting and diarrhea.

As soon as that started happening, we brought him straight to the vet. They did all kinds of blood work including x-rays. They were stumped. Because he was back to eating Science Diet, we totally forgot about the week of Beneful. Awful parents we are. The vet really couldn't give us any answers. But now after reading all these posts, I'm positive it was the Beneful. So glad he only ate it for a week before too much damage was done. He is now back to his fun self and eating like a little porky. Beneful, you stink!

Shame on Purina for knowing for quite a long time that Beneful was poisoning dogs. I nearly lost mine after only 5 feedings. Her coat went dull, started to fall out & she started vomiting. She became lethargic. As soon as I changed her food back to Pedigree, she recovered in only a couple of days & has had no further problems.

I have never used Purina products before and I wanted to try something different to try and help with my dog's gas problems. I bought a 42-lb. bag of Purina's Beneful Original from Sam's Club on January 8th. I started feeding it to her around the 10th or 12th. By January 20th, she started acting a bit lethargic and just not being her normal self. She vomited the first time on January 26th. On Sunday, January 27th, she didn't eat or drink anything.

We rushed her to the vet on Monday morning, the 28th. She could barely walk. She crashed that quickly. She was admitted and was given medicines and saline drip for dehydration. A blood chemistry revealed high blood toxins and the vet wanted to know what she might have gotten into. We have nothing for her to have gotten into and we were completely baffled. Telling the vet she had been acting funny for a week didn't make sense to her either unless she was being given small doses over time.

On Tuesday, we were hoping for improvement but were saddened that she had developed neurological problems and a new blood chemistry revealed her toxins had gone up. Her body temperature had gone down to 96 degrees. She died that afternoon. We were devastated. She was my 8-year-old boy's dog, and having to tell him and my 6-year-old daughter she died was one of the hardest things to do. Angry and confused as to what could have caused this I searched the house in and out.

I started searching the web for answers and that is when I found others with same problems regarding Purina Foods. I never even considered the dog food to be the culprit, but here were tons of articles regarding Purina Beneful killing pets. I printed an article and took it to my vet and she felt it answered all the unknowns and filled in all the gaps as to what caused this. So I find it to be more than a coincidence that my healthy 2.5-year-old Mastiff died 2.5 weeks after switching to Purina Beneful!

I am beyond angry. I have already filed with the FDA. I have large plastic dog food storage bins that I put my food in, so I threw the bag out right after opening it and I don't have the batch number. I do have a lot of food left over so I can have it tested for toxins. I'm already contacting labs and other places to see what has to be done to test this food.

We love you, Mazey. You were taken from us way before your time and we will miss you dearly.

On occasion, I would feed my dog as a treat a little wet dog food. I always used the Beneful Wet Foods. I had a very healthy long hair Jack Russell Terrier, Skippy, who had just been to the vets and was in perfect health. I also have an 8-year old Yorkie, Spike, but he did not eat wet food at all. On Sept. 8, 2012, I decided to give my Skippy a little wet good as a treat. So I gave him a couple of spoonfuls of the roasted chicken one and he ate it right away. My Spike would never eat any of it. A little while later, Skippy didn't seem himself and had some diarrhea. It wasn't like him to make in the house, so they went to sleep.

On Sept. 9th, I decided to give Skippy the rest of the container of roasted chicken Beneful and he ate most of it up. He had diarrhea again and it was very dark in color. He didn't seem to be peeing. As the day progressed, he seemed weaker and more diarrhea. Still no urine. Later, he seemed weak and was stumbling when he walked. I tried giving him water throughout the night but didn't really take much of it. I. rushed him to the vet first thing in the morning. I explained to the vet and he said my dog didn't look too good. He took his blood, did x-rays and other tests. He put him on an IV's and heated pad. He said he was dehydrated. Then he told me he has kidney failure. The vet went over everything in the prior 3 days as far as what the dogs did, what they ate, what they played with, etc. The only thing different between the two dogs is that my Yorkie Spike did not have any of the wet food.

My dog Skippy did make it through the night of Sept. 10th but in the morning, the vet said he was doing poorly so the vet decided to do an exploratory surgery. They prepped for surgery and when they went to put the anesthesia on my dog, he was already dead. The Beneful food absolutely killed him. He went into kidney failure, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the diarrhea and not urinating. I have a copy of the vet bills. I wish they would help with the bill because I am unemployed and had to take a loan to pay the bill. I know it was definitely the food and so did my vet. I had thrown the container out into the garbage and when I ran home to get it out of there, the garbage men had picked it up already. Purlins needs to do something about this. I haven't written before because I have been devastated losing my best friend. He was the best dog I ever had. I cry every day and wish something could be done to prevent this from happening to another innocent dog.

My name is Erica ** and I would like to file a complaint about Purina Beneful Dog Food causing my dog to become very ill. My pit bull is a year and a half old and has been eating Beneful for the past year. In December of 2012, he became very ill. He was vomiting, lost control of his bladder, stopped eating and was drinking water excessively. All my little boy wanted to do was crawl in a ball and sleep; he had become very weak. We took him to the vet who informed us that he was extremely dehydrated, and that he was in kidney failure. He was immediately admitted to the hospital where he was given fluids and antibiotics. He stayed at the animal hospital from Tuesday, December 19th, to Saturday, December 22nd, 2012. During this time, he had his kidneys flushed, multiple tests ran and was provided with antibiotics.

When he was released on Saturday, our once 60lb dog now weighed a scary 47lbs but was in good spirits. He was released with medication and ID wet food. A few days later, he finished the wet food and went back onto the Beneful. Three days after that, he was covered in massive hives and was throwing up. We brought him back to the vet to have him examined. We were told to fast him and after 12 hours, slowly introduce water. He was given a week supply of wet food and under the skin fluid and antibiotics. Again, he got better and was put back on Beneful after this supply of ID was done. He began to have accidents in the house and excessive amounts of urination. His water intake had to be monitored because he was drinking water as if he was dying of thirst.

Yesterday, my boyfriend just so happened to come across an article that spoke about reports of dogs becoming ill from Purina Beneful Dog Food. When reading this article and symptom list, all I could do was cry because I felt I was reading about my own dog. I have spent countless hours researching trying to figure out what was wrong with my dog, many sleepless nights sitting awake with a deathly ill dog, and more stress and anxiety than I can express. Each morning that I left for work, I was petrified to what I might come home to. My dog has suffered and deserves justice. I am thousands of dollars in debt from hospital bills, and I am suffering from extreme guilt knowing that I allowed this to happen to such a sweet and innocent animal. I want justice for my dog, for the other dogs and families suffering from this, and I don't want anyone else to have to suffer.

First off, everyone leaving comments on this site, also go directly to the FDA and file a formal complaint with them. I spoke with them this morning and said until they see a large number of similar, formal complaints about a product, there is nothing they can do. I have been feeding my soon to be six-year old golden retriever Beneful almost exclusively since he was a puppy. He's always thrived and done well on it, until this month. We purchased a new 15 lb. bag of original Beneful at Wal-Mart in Rome, NY. Shortly after we started feeding Scooby the food from this bag, he developed some new habits. He began foraging around the house for food. He was getting into cat food and picking out of the trash. Here, we assumed it was just that a new, bad habit. We blocked his access to cat food and trash and only allowed him his own food, no table scraps either.

However, I noticed he was beginning to lose weight after about a week of this. Nothing drastic, just a little more slim through the belly. Pitying him, I would sneak him some of our food and he would gladly accept. But I never gave him more than a taste. Last week, things took a drastic turn for the worse. Scooby's Beneful was sitting in his bowl untouched for days. His weight loss was suddenly extreme and obvious. He had muscle wasting, extreme thirst, vomiting occasionally, shortness of breath and weakness. My sweet dog, who has slept in my bed almost every night and always stays close to his family, couldn't even make it up the stairs. I took him to our vet on Tuesday. The doctor looked at him and immediately said liver. Scooby was jaundiced, had tenderness to palpation of the liver, increased heart rate and increased, shallow respiration and severely anemic. The doctor offered to do labs but the prognosis was poor, no matter what the results.

Scooby was a sick boy. He told me to think it over for a day or two and decide if I wanted to take on the expense of testing, knowing there wasn't much we could do to treat him. By the time a day had passed, Scooby made the decision for us. He began losing bowel control. We noted blood in some of the stools. He was weak and I could see how tired he had become. He still wanted to be close to us all the time but just couldn't muster the strength. All this time, his Beneful went untouched. I feel horrible because we wanted so desperately for him to eat, that we would poor soup or gravy over his food to see if it would appeal to him. No go. He still wouldn't touch it. However, offer him some pizza and he was ravenous.

But by Friday, his loose stools were increasing to four or five times an hour. He wanted to go outside, where he would literally collapse into the snow, and began eating the snow as fast as he could. He continued to drink huge amounts of water. I ignored his Beneful by this point. I said he could have whatever he wanted of our food. Too little too late, I guess. By Saturday morning, January 26, Scooby's stools were nothing but blood clots. He was weak, wouldn't walk, could barely lift his head. We decided the time had come and had him put to sleep that morning. When this started, I never considered the food. Just said to myself, it's cancer. It happens. But after is always when you start putting the pieces together. I noticed this bag of food was nearly empty. And considering how little of it he was eating, I knew it was the only bag he'd had since the symptoms started. Then I looked online and saw this. I was horrified. I feel like I unknowingly killed my own dog. I know I did. But I never thought of the food. It's the same food he's had all his life, why would I?

Today, I called the ASPCA; I'm waiting for a callback. I called the FDA and filed a formal complaint, which they said they have had very few of, too few to take action. I called Purina. They insist this whole site is bogus, the food is fine but were eager to pay my vet bills. I called all the local vets to warn them. My father called retailers in the area, begging them to remove Beneful from their shelves. Of course, they won't without a recall. I called NY Dept of Agriculture. They will be coming to my home to collect samples of the food and Scooby's stools. They also recommended I have him autopsied at Cornell. So, next call is Cornell. I am picking Scooby up at the vet in the morning and making the trip to Cornell to deliver him personally into their capable hands. Let's hope we can get some answers.

Back in June of 2011, my little girl, Raven, who is half Italian Greyhound and half Min Pin started getting sick. She was very healthy and had a vet visit the month before which was all good. The vet said she was really healthy and all her tests were negative at that time. Then in June, Raven started getting what the vets call wheals but I called them hives because I didn’t know what they were. To me, it looked like an allergic reaction to something. She had it all over her head, face, down her neck and onto her back. It didn’t seem to bother her but I knew something was wrong. After a while, she started acting funny and little did I know that this was the beginning of a very long journey for both of us.

Raven started getting very slow and very hot feeling. This little girl has always slept in bed under the covers since she was a pup and she was sleeping on the floor or in the kennel which she never does. She started getting distant from me and her feeding habits changed. I wasn’t seeing her drink much but she sure had to go potty a lot. When Raven got swelling in her throat area, see picture below, where she would look like a pelican, I immediately took her to the vet! The picture of the swollen neck was taken on 11/28/11 and the other picture was taken only weeks before on 11/03/11.

When she did get the swelling on her neck, it would happen within hours and her neck would swell right up. That's how fast what she had would progress! When she had the swelling on her neck and the wheels, she acted like herself with no recourse. After a couple of days, sometimes only a day, the sickness would set in and fast! She would go downhill in a matter of hours and I rushed her to the vets many, many times to keep her alive! Raven would start acting very lethargic, would refuse to eat (even the good stuff, you know people food), wouldn't drink, start to shake, have loss of control of limbs (head, neck, couldn't walk), had a hard time seeing things (still does at night, she can't see anything and will bark at me sometimes when I walk into a room), have a very high fever of 104 to 105, starts panting, restless but can't move so she would cry and probably more that I can't think of.

I took her to 2 different vets many times, at least every 2 weeks or when she had an episode, and all I got was that this might be a tick disease and gave her meds with prednisone as one of them. Every time I took her in, blood work was done and her platelets were so low they didn’t know how she was still with us. She was extremely dehydrated, weak and her fevers were always around 104 degrees or more. I was at the time feeding Raven Beneful Healthy Radiance after a switch from Natural Balance small breed food. She had eaten Beneful since she was a pup, but I tried the Natural Balance in January April of 2011 then I switched her back to Beneful in May. Raven was at the time a little over 2 years old. The vets had no idea what was causing her very weird onset of symptoms and tried a prescription allergy medicine which made the wheals worse but like I said, I noticed things would go away with the Prednisone.

I had enough with the vets not knowing what was wrong and they even told me I should see a specialist, so I went to the University of Minnesota. I figured that if I would spend the money for my little girl, I might as well make sure it’s worth it! After bringing Raven in for a consultation and running some blood work, she broke out in the swelling on her throat, so I immediately scheduled an appointment to show them what I was talking about. They were baffled at what they saw when I brought her in and told me they would like an aspiration of that swelling, because all of the other tests they ran were negative but her white blood cell count was very low and they couldn’t understand why; and they ran a lot of tests! They still did not know what they were dealing with but did prescribe prednisone because we knew that worked.

I had the aspiration done and the results came back with Immune Mediated Vasculitis which was given to me in December of 2011. We went through this up and down battle for over 6 months, and I was so scared I was going to lose her many times. But with my perseverance, quick response to when she needed the vet and her holding on for me, we finally got an answer. This is something very rare the vets told me and I would have to keep her on medicine for a long time if not her entire life to keep her alive. I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on my little girl but no amount of money can replace her. She is one of a kind and I will beg, borrow and steal to make sure she gets what she needs to survive! I do have a great job so the stealing won’t be happening, lol. I have had Raven on Atopica which is a steroid but does not allow weight gain and the many potty breaks that prednisone does. And she also takes Pentoxifylline since January of 2012. The Atopica is very expensive but it works and she is doing fabulous! She has not had any of the symptoms since she has been on these medications and she is also on a special raw organic diet and dropped the prednisone weight!

After all these symptoms started, I really researched the food industry and her symptoms. I went through all kinds of foods but I settled on a raw organic diet. I am aware that with her immune system being almost nothing due to the steroids that I must take extreme caution in feeding raw. My dogs eat from our cereal bowls so I know that they are very clean. I also clean the prep area every time after feedings and I prepare everything in the kitchen on the counters, so I know it’s clean! I have tried placing her back on dry food, but I am so scared that this could happen again and her tummy prefers the raw. She gets horrible diarrhea when I try dry foods that I just take the risk of feeding the raw diet. What I have read, and of course the vets will all tell you different, the dogs intestinal tract is much shorter than ours and their stomach will kill just about anything like salmonella. But when you have no immune system, it can take a toll on them if they do contract it, so precautions are necessary.

Dogs can also eat raw bones, yes chicken bones and I have fed my dogs chicken wings. They love it! It is crunchy and cleans their teeth. The bones are very soft and I never had a problem with them. Please read up on which foods are best for your pets as the internet has so much information to offer. Find what works best for your family and your dog(s) and they will be happy, healthy and with you for a long time to come. I know some people have gone through the symptoms that I listed above but taking your pet to a specialist or going straight to the university is the way to get the needed answers. If you cannot afford your pets, I know this would be hard but you must either not get one or give them to someone that can handle those bills. It’s not fair to look into those deep brown eyes and tell them that you can’t afford to help. Because in reality, that is your job as a pet owner to provide the best for them.

In return, they would give their life for you! Please respect them and treat them with the utmost care and diligence. I had to push things aside to cover her bills but I did it and we both survived! I don’t know for sure what caused this to happen to my Raven but from what I have read with the reactions from other dogs to the Beneful, my Raven’s symptoms are very similar and it is very scary that they have not done a recall with this food! I think Purina is scared because if they do a recall, then they may have to compensate to all the families that have lost and/or paid excessive amounts of money for this needed vet care to save or try and save their family member's life! This is preposterous and a malicious way to treat these wonderful creatures that to many are family! Step up to the plate Purina and take care of the people that have put their trust and faith in you! That is all as pet parents we ask, to help us all get through this and save as many lives left that we can! Please recall this food! Thank you.

I just stumbled upon this site today, and I am appalled. I have a small Chihuahua terrier mix named Ceaser. Last summer of 2012, we thought we'd upgrade his food to Beneful. He might have eaten 1 or 2 small bags. One day, he suddenly broke out in hives on every inch of his body. He had slight diarrhea and gagging. We took him to the vet and they wanted to do all sorts of tests, which we couldn't afford. They also wanted to put him on prescription dog food, which we couldn't afford, either. I also never knew that diet could cause problems; the vet never told me that. I took him home. He was barely eating and was listless. We thought he was allergic to something unknown in the house. They said to give him Benadryl, which seemed to make him vomit. After about a week of him suffering, his dog food ran out, so we just picked up the generic, cheap, dog food at the store I was at by chance, not even connecting his diet to his illness. After about a week and a half, one morning he was all better! We were so relieved. Since then, he never had Beneful again. My daughter buys Kibbles n' Bits now or generic with table food, and he has never been sick since then. I feel terrible about all the people who lost their loved ones to Purina!

He had no energy or playfulness, and gave us no indication that he was hungry, thirsty or needed to go outside. His eyes were glazed over and he just stared into space. Thankfully, he bounced back after a couple days. I thought he may have just had a virus. Several weeks passed, and he seemed okay.

Over the past few days, however, he has been vomiting a lot. I had to clean up 10 separate areas where he threw up the other day, soon after he ate. We have always fed him Beneful. I'm so thankful that I read that his food may be harming him. Hopefully he will be okay. We threw it away today, and I will not use it again. As I think back over the years, I remember him having the same symptoms once before. We took him to the vet, as I thought he may have ingested something poisonous. Now I'm wondering if it wasn't the Beneful at that time, too.

We learned about the issues with Beneful from our kennels owner a week ago. We have fed our dog this food for several years and were shocked to learn that there was a problem with a Purina product; this is a name associated with pets as long as I remember. As soon as I got home, I started doing some research and determined we would suspend use of all Purina products until further notice. We are not sure if this is a coincidence or what, but the following day, our Molly started with severe diarrhea. We immediately stopped feeding her Beneful and have now changed her over to a natural pet food. Her symptoms seem to be diminishing, but we are worried about the damage that might have been done before we knew. Had we not seen the notice posted at the kennel, who knows how long it would have been before we knew of the problems? Something needs to be done.

My dogs and my sister's dogs had been eating Purina Beneful and they all became very sick in the last week, starting with throwing up, gelatinous (jelly) like stools with blood and they have been very down and not their usual playful selves. I am so angry with Purina because of the way they are handling these complaints. I feel like everyone is being given the same line of bs so that the company can try to cover up the big problem here. Why do they continue to refuse to provide more information, statistics, etc. in regards to how many people have complained about the same food/bags/batch/lot numbers, etc. and where they source their food from? Nobody at Purina seemed to really care about our dogs getting sick from the food and were quick to offer us coupons for free bags of dog food. No thanks, Purina!

I am writing in regards to my little Teacup Poodle, Cheeto, who died on Monday morning, January 21, 2013, of renal failure. My daughter has submitted one review about this but I have information to add. Cheeto had a skin infection along with the other problems that my daughter mentioned. We took our dog on several trips to the vet to discuss what was possibly wrong with our little Cheeto. We had no idea that it could be the food he was eating which was Purina Beneful. But as soon as we thought he went blind and gained weight all at the same time, I yanked him off the Beneful and put him on EN (also made by Purina), a gastrointestinal special food. His bowels had also become bloody and slimy. The damage had already been done and apparently he was still getting poisoned by what he was eating. He began to throw up; another trip to the vet and he appeared fine for about 4 days and then began throwing up profusely and lost energy. We went to the vet again, blood tests, and more shots to comfort our boy. He did not recover.

Another one of our dogs, Sadie, a black Lab, who is over ten years old, has also been suffering from a bad skin infection. She has wound up losing her hair and it has gotten pretty bad. She was on Purina Beneful until I wanted something cheaper. I began buying Purina Healthy Morsels which I realized was probably worse than Beneful. The skin was getting worse. I threw all that dog food away and now use only an All Natural food ... All my animals are happier and on the mend. It will take Sadie a little while to get over the skin problem but she can at least heal now. I am treating all my dogs with a kidney support system to clean their bodies out. I do not plan on losing any more of my dear loved ones to bad food and bad practices! Purina, clean your factories!

We just bought a new bag of Beneful Weight Control for my 6-year-old Boxer a few weeks ago. As he started to eat it over the past few weeks, he became lethargic; then started to have diarrhea; vomiting; loss of appetite; weight loss; excessive water drinking; and urination/accidents in the house. We took him to the vet and his liver enzymes were extremely high. He was slightly anemic. The vet asked what we were feeding him and we said Beneful. She said to discontinue it immediately. She told us about the recent reports of Beneful incidents logged from November 2012 through January 2013 and said that she thinks the Beneful could be causing it due to Aflotoxins in the food, which is mold. She said he has all the symptoms.

She referred him to an emergency clinic and they wanted $2,300 to run tests and keep him for a few days, because the vet there said it could be one of several things. We couldn't afford that so we took him back home. We switched his food and started to give him boiled chicken/rice and another better brand of dry dog food. We also started to give him milk thistle 250mg mixed with water twice a day to regenerate his liver. He seems to be getting better. He's eating more and is up and around. He stopped drinking water excessively and the diarrhea stopped. We're going to bring him back to the vet this week for more blood work to recheck his liver enzymes. The vet said if we caught it early, he might be okay and I'm hoping we did. We saved the Beneful in case anyone needs to test it. Beneful should be recalled immediately.

I don't remember how long I fed Gus Beneful dog food. He liked it and at first, he seemed to be thriving on it. Suddenly, he began tearing at his skin and before long, he was scratching himself raw. Right to the vet he went. I was told, by the vet (at that time), after skin scraping, Gus had a yeast infection. Although his skin was red, itchy and flaking, I wasn't believing that was the cause. Still, I used the costly antibiotics and shampoo they prescribed because, after all, they were the experts. There was no improvement despite my efforts and expense. Gus continued to eat, and enjoy, his Beneful.

Gus's skin never got better. In fact, he got worse. His fur, now greasy to the touch and smelly, despite the prescription shampoo, was falling out by this time. When I called the vet, I was told it was going to take weeks of antibiotic therapy and shampoo treatments for him to heal. As an RN, I knew a yeast infection should have responded at least a little from what I was doing. It was going to cost me $200 a visit to heal Gus, in their estimation, and it was going to take months. I am not an expert on dogs by any stretch of the imagination, but I knew something more was going on with my dog. Looking back, I wonder how I could not see the signs. When people have allergies to food, they break out in hives, or itchy rashes, swelling, or redness... all skin problems. It's been said hindsight is 20/20 and a year later, it all seems so crystal clear.

Gus couldn't talk but his body was telling me what was going on. But I wouldn't listen. Purina was a trusted brand in my house. It always had been, at least until now. A couple of days before he died, Gus started drinking water excessively. Every time I looked at his water bowl, it was empty or nearly empty. I can't say I noticed he wasn't peeing in those few days, but I did notice that the day he passed. That day, Gus was throwing up until there was nothing left but bile. He vomited all morning and afternoon until early evening when it stopped. I took that as a good sign. Earlier in the day, I had called a new vet but they managed to convince me it wasn't an emergency so I decided to take him the next day.

I stayed up that night, watching him closely. He kept drinking water but then I realized I never saw him urinate that day. He was restless and would not leave my side. Although Gus was a Shih Tzu, a lap dog he was not. He liked attention but never liked being held, so when he jumped up on my lap, I just knew something was terribly wrong. He stretched hard, let out a howl and he was gone. It's been a year and I still miss him terribly. A few months and a gazillion tears later, my mom bought me a Shih Tzu pup. There is no replacing Gus, I know, but I fell in love all over again with my new puppy, Max. Of course, I want the best for him so, like I did for Gus, I bought him Beneful Puppy. He loved it. After eating it for months, Max started developing the same skin conditions as Gus. By this time, due to financial problems, and divine intervention, I had to change dog foods.

The new food, a less expensive brand, caused him to have diarrhea, so I went right back to Beneful. When we took Max to the vet, he had healed to the point where he only had a little scab under his fur, on his back. Still, he put Max on antibiotics and told me to give him Benadryl. Once back on his regular dog food, Beneful, Max started having skin problems again. So blind was my trust in Purina, I never even considered food allergies. In fact, the vet asked me what I was feeding him and when I told him Beneful, he said, "Good." If the vet wasn't able to recognize a food allergy, how was I? I took Max to a new groomer last week. She immediately asked me what I was feeding him and after telling her she gave me a lesson on food allergies. Well, as the saying goes, you could "Knock me down with a feather!" There was no question as to what caused Gus to die, in my opinion, kidney failure secondary to skin infection due to allergies to his food.

I don't need a vet to verify it because I know in my heart and in my mind, eating that dog food killed Gus and would have killed Max. Two different dogs, same breed, same food had the same allergy. It kills me to know that Gus's groomer either didn't know or wouldn't say what caused his skin condition. I asked her if she knew and she told me, "No". His groomer has pets of her own and, in fact, shows her dogs around the country. It is so hard for me to believe she never heard of any of this. I thank God every day for Max's groomer. I hate to think of what might have happened if we hadn't taken him there (pet store) for his second haircut. I changed his dog food and I am so happy to report Max is healing nicely. I came home from the groomer and went right to the computer where I find not only has this been going on for years but Purina has known about this all along.

If it weren't for Facebook and the internet, we never would have talked to each other and been able to get all of this in the same place. I called Purina yesterday to report the death of my first dog and the illness of my second and was given the same diarrhea they give everyone else. Shame on you, Purina! I trusted you so that I wouldn't have to worry about what I was feeding my dogs. Even after all these complaints, you will not voluntarily recall that product. If this many people died, you know it would at the very least be investigated by the FDA. How many people died from tainted Tylenol years ago? Did they wait for more to die before the stores pulled them off the shelves? If you invited 5 people for dinner and one of them died, wouldn't you want to know why? Do you really think all these people are making this stuff up? Why are you not doing your own investigating?

Why do you keep telling us there is nothing wrong? You say these are rumors and unfounded allegations, do you have any idea just how angry that makes those of us who have lost pets? Our pets are gone, that is wrong ... In itself, that should be enough. Thanks to everyone who is helping me to learn about feeding my dog and that ignorance is not bliss.

Our beautiful 11-year-old Chocolate lab Chester has eaten Beneful for many years. In October, we found a small growth on his neck. After a biopsy to confirm, it was benign, so we decided on surgery the following week. For the first time in his 11 years, he had diarrhea the day before surgery and again that morning of. There was also blood in his stool as well, so they cancelled the surgery and put him on meds to clear it up and rescheduled for the following week. He was somewhat lethargic but I attributed that to the diarrhea. He was not a big drinker for the most part but we all noticed that he was drinking so much more than ever during that time. Two years ago, we had him tested as he had low liver values and was put on medication for it.

So when we went to try the surgery again, they could not do it as his liver values were up. We brought him for another ultra sound and although the liver was the same, they noticed something in the spleen. He was on an antibiotic and pills for diarrhea until his upcoming surgery date. During the next two weeks, he was eating but would look bloated after he ate and just not himself. There were times he would pant very heavy and was still drinking more than normal. He had barely eaten the last few days prior to surgery, only yogurt, peanut butter, etc. He would sniff at his bowl of Beneful but walk away. The morning of his surgery, he really didn't look well at all and had diarrhea again. During the two weeks prior to his surgery, he had lab work which was fine and a lung and chest x-ray that came back fine. I couldn’t believe he was so sick from the spleen, so I thought whatever was there must not be good. He was starting to lose weight by now as well.

The day of surgery, he began to have an irregular heartbeat which they attributed that to the spleen and once removed, he would be fine. They went ahead and removed it and he did great. The next day, his heart was racing again. They didn't know why and what was happening to him. And at that time, we had to make the decision to put him to sleep. That was one of the most heart-wrenching days of my life. There was nothing anyone could do for him. That was December 15, 2012. We were devastated. Every vet was optimistic for a good result and he never made it home. The following week, his pathology report came back. It was benign. That also made our loss so much harder to deal with. They biopsied the liver which they said lesions were there due to an inappropriate response to antigens or infection.

We have spoken to three veterinarians about this as we are at such a loss of what happened to him and no one has any answers. They all feel that at the time, the spleen was the issue; however, something else was going on that was missed. We have spent the past 6 weeks on the computer finding out what could have gone wrong? Up until October, he was such a healthy dog and now I stumble upon this article about Beneful. If this is what has caused our beautiful boy his life, what a travesty beyond words. Looking at the symptoms, he had many of them. Like I said, he has eaten Beneful for many years, the healthy weight and radiance as well. I am in such disbelief that we have done all we can and spent over $5,000 to save him because his prognosis was good and to even think now that because of me feeding him Beneful, it may have caused his life.

Living without him is difficult enough for all of us. Our hearts are so broken. But how can we live now knowing that we were trying so hard to keep him eating during this time and we were feeding him a death sentence. I truly hope that the company is legally responsible for each and every pet that has suffered and lost their lives and will never see their owners again because of them. This now has deepened my hurt as I have this guilt to carry forever.

We opened a new bag 4 weeks ago, and just after feeding this to my dog, he threw up his entire meal. He has never thrown up his food before. Thinking that the lot of dog food was contaminated, I threw the entire bag away and repurchased another bag from another store in a smaller quantity. In between purchasing the new bag of dog food, I was feeding my dog canned dog food that he was not throwing up. Again, once feeding him the dry Beneful, my dog was throwing up his entire meal! Obviously, something is wrong with this food! Thankfully, he is still alive.

I have lost both my cocker spaniel and rottweiler in 2012. Both my dogs were very healthy, and out of nowhere, they both started having serious health issues after eating Beneful dog food. They both became very lethargic and just wanted to lie around and be left alone. Both had unexplained diarrhea issues. The cocker spaniel had an unexplained blood disorder, weakness in his back legs, uncontrollable urinary issues, and excessive thirst. My rottweiler went from being very energetic and happy-go-lucky, to lying on the couch and sleeping a lot. Then out of the blue, she started having seizures. Our vet could not find anything that would cause the seizures. She was put on medication, which did not stop them. She also became very disorientated and also had urinary issues. Both my dogs could not control their bladders and started urinating in the house.

Never in a million years did I think it was their dog food. I have used Purina products for many years. After we lost them both, I rescued another very healthy and energetic rottweiler pup. I put him on Beneful puppy food. He had constant diarrhea and was feeling rather ill. Our vet could not find anything wrong with him. This is when I started my research on the Beneful food and discovered all the issues others were having. I was in total shock to discover Purina products would cause so many health issues. I took our pup off the Beneful and he improved greatly. I feel very bad that I fed my other dogs this awful food. If I had known what I know now, I could have possibly saved them. I will never, ever buy any Purina products again.

Please read. This past December, we lost our 7-year-old Beagle to kidney failure. I strongly believe Beneful caused her to fall ill. She and our Lab began throwing up frequently after they ate. I went online and researched their food and read about so many dogs becoming ill. Immediately, I changed their food. Our Lab bounced back but our beagle continued to decline. At this point, we took her to the vet; she had a very bad infection. Once her blood test came back, the doctor told us she had aggressive kidney failure. Within 3 weeks and $5200 in vet bills, she passed away. I will never forgive myself for feeding her this food. She was a wonderful dog who deserved a full life. I still feel a lot of guilt over this. Check your ingredients. Very poor nutrition, dyes and flavoring meant to entice your dog to like this product. Dogs do not need the color cues to make them enjoy food. There are several sites out that point out which foods are more nutritional with better processing procedures and facilities. It is well worth it to spend more money for a better product.

I did and it went away; but when the Benadryl wears off, the knots come back. What's going on with my dog?! The vet said to bring him in if it doesn't stop in the next couple of days.

The rats are so bad there - big as house cats. They kill them with a gun and leave them laying around to rot. Sometimes the rats end up in the food while being made. Yep, dead rats. I was told by a manager that it was just free protein. I can't tell you everything, but someone please have this food recalled. Others probably need it as well. They make a lot of crap dog and cat food. I have dogs that I love dearly. I will never feed them that crap. Someone needs the FDA involved, but I'm sure they are paid to look the other way. It's a huge company. They cover up these things very well. I can never get involved as I worked there. So someone do something.

I need to file a lawsuit against Purina. My little teacup poodle Cheeto died of kidney failure on 01/21/2013 between 3am-430am. We used to feed him the Beneful brand of dog food made by Purina. Last week, I found out from my mom that Beneful causes blindness, seizures and kidney failure in dogs. My mom found out from a friend that a number of people have complained about the dog food to the FDA and to Purina because they had to put their dogs down because of the illnesses the food caused. They refuse to take the food off the market. My little baby Cheeto went blind in December of 2011 and got depressed. He didn't want to do much but he was eating and drinking just fine. A couple months later, his poop started having blood in it and was runny and slimy, so we switched his food from Beneful to EN which is a vet prescribed diet that one of my other dogs has to have because her digestive tract is messed up. The EN seemed to help Cheeto for a good few months.

Around the late fall of 2012, Cheeto started throwing up but he continued to eat and drink and use the bathroom like normal. At first, I thought it was normal because another one of my dogs throws up sometimes. The throwing up had gotten worse and we brought him to the vet on 01/11/2013 and the vet said he had some parasites, so she gave him a shot for nausea and stuff. For 4 days, he didn't puke so I thought he was getting better. The spring semester started here at McNeese on 01/16/2013 and my little baby Cheeto went downhill the next day or so and got depressed even more and started throwing up again but it was worse than it was before. This time, he refused to eat and drink and that is when my mom told me about how Beneful was bad for dogs because she had just found out. My mom brought Cheeto to me on Friday and he tried to drink water but he threw it up. I was so worried about my baby.

And on Saturday morning, we brought him to the vet and she said it was kidney failure. She did some blood work to be sure, re-hydrated him, and gave him another shot for nausea. We took him home and I gave him water through a dropper. We pulverized his food and I was feeding him with a dropper. We found a natural/ herbal medicine called kidney rejuvenator and we bought that, so we could try to save him. But sadly, he died yesterday, so we couldn't save him. After we buried him, the vet called and told us it was kidney failure and that his kidney enzyme levels were so high they were off the charts. There was nothing they could have done. I can't let Purina get away with making bad food that kills animals. Other people have complained and it doesn't do anything. All they did was put a complaint number on the website and continue to sell the food so other animals can get sick. I think that is wrong. Animals are my life especially my animals and I believe that if a dog food is bad for an animal then it shouldn't be on the market. I have currently been contacting lawyers to file a lawsuit against Purina.

My 8-year-old dog, Ruby (Lab/Chow mix), has many allergies so we kept her on Natural Balance. She has hypothyroidism and is on medication. However, about a week ago, I sent my son to buy dog food. He picked up Beneful and I decided to try it anyway. Little by little, Ruby was showing signs that she was not feeling well. She became lethargic, drank an excessive amount of water and had some diarrhea. On Monday. January 21, 2013, my son called me at work to tell me that Ruby was acting "weird." She cried in pain a couple of times while she was laying down even though no one touched her.

My son went to check her and she was unresponsive. She opened her eyes and they were darting back and forth rapidly. When she came to, she was disoriented and ran away from my son, which she never does. She's his shadow. I went home and took her to the vet. The vet told me that it seems that she had a seizure and it could be a brain tumor or cancer. The excessive thirst was probably kidney disease. She had an ear infection and a skin infection. She had blood work done and it was all normal so there was no issue from the thyroid condition.

I was given medicine for her ear infection and skin infection but nothing else. All this was at the cost of over $500. The next day, she never moved from her bed except to drink water. She never ate (she hadn't eaten in two days). When I would pet her, she was shivering. I was convinced that she was going to die or we were going to have to put her to sleep. I called another vet and rushed her over. The vet was wonderful and asked a lot of questions, got all the lab results from the other vet. Then he asked me what she was eating. I explained that she was on Natural Balance but had switched over to Beneful. He instructed me to get her off the Beneful immediately and had shown me an article regarding Beneful and its harmful effects on dogs. I had my son throw all the Beneful away.

The vet gave me a bag of hypoallergenic dog food. I took Ruby home and the following morning, she was so much more like herself. She is on the mend. It seems to make sense to me that her problems were caused by the Beneful. She had not eaten it for two and a half days and did eat on the third day the dog food given to me by the vet. She was up (still not 100%) and wagging her tail again. My second visit to the vet was $100. Purina, you owe me $600 for the cost of having to take my dog to the vet because of your refusal to pull Beneful from the shelves. Needless to say, I called everyone I know who has a dog and everyone threw away their Beneful. Funny, the majority of them were saying "Yeah, he/she's been acting a little sick." Shame on you, Purina. These dogs are our family. Would you want it to happen to your family? I think not.

We didn't think too much of it until he started losing his energy and then losing weight, becoming dehydrated and vomiting all the more. Then he started snubbing his nose to the food and stopped eating and drinking.

After a trip to the vets, we found out he had stage four renal failure. He died in our arms a week later and yes, we are angry and feeling very guilty about this. We use to always check his treats but never once did it occur to us to check his food. Maybe this is a lesson (a hard one) for all of us. Don't believe what you read. How long can this go on? Our dog had all but one of the symptoms. He did not suffer seizures but that makes little difference. It only took two and a half months for us to lose our baby boy. My 5-year-old Great Dane died this past Sunday of cirrhosis of the liver caused by long term repeated exposure to an unnamed toxin. He was a perfectly healthy dog until he began having urinary incontinence. At first, we thought this may be due to a urinary tract infection. But after a thorough veterinary examination, no disease processes were found. Later, he began losing his hair. A follow up vet visit and subsequent lab work showed his thyroid to be slightly low, so we started him on Levothyroxine. His problem continued and actually worsened when he lost his robust appetite. Over the next 4 weeks, my 150 pound dog lost 13 pounds.

We took him back to the vet for more lab work and another exam. Once again, no explanation for what we were observing. Over the next 2 weeks, he quit eating altogether and lost 12 more pounds. We took him back to the vet where they did a series of x-rays, ultrasounds and eventually biopsy of the liver. Unfortunately, his liver was too weak to process the anesthesia and he never woke up from the biopsy. The pathology report showed that his liver was nothing but scar tissue, as a result from a long term repeated exposure to a toxin. The only long term repeated exposure my dog had to anything was Beneful dry dog food. We have called Beneful and filed a complaint. So far, they will not admit that it may be any fault of their own.

He had many of the symptoms I've found on several sites and found in other people's posts, vomiting several times a week, mild lethargy and excessive water drinking among others. We have since changed our 7-year-old Rott's food and she has not vomited once and appears to be on the mend.

We have a 1-year-old rat terrier (pure bred, no papers). We adopted her at age 9 months from another family - friends of ours. She is a small dog, only 9lbs. Her legs are too tall for her to classify technically as a miniature rat terrier, but as she is not 10lbs, she doesn't fit the typical rat terrier physical expectations for her breed. She is full grown. She is a beautiful girl. She is/was house trained. She let us know when she had to go potty when we got her and would hold her wet and stool until we took her outside. She would have occasional accidents when she first moved in with us and joined our family, but she learned very quickly with rewards and regular schedule. She got to where accidents were rare to never.

Her diet the first two months was the Petco natural brand of dog food mixed with Petco's natural brand of canned dog food. We had to take out the canned dog food due to budget issues, but hoped to add it back in when money wasn't as tight. It seemed she was getting a bit bored with just her dry food, so in the last month we decided to try and mix her dry natural Petco brand with another dry brand, and do half and half. My friend, who has two beautiful dogs (a beagle/rat terrier and a miniature pincher), recommended Beneful as that is what she feeds her dogs. We slowly introduced the Beneful, until she was eating half Beneful half the natural Petco brand at each meal (one in the morning, one in the early evening).

Soon after, the problems started with an episode of excessive vomiting. We thought she just had a bug, so nurtured her through the worst vomiting lasting about 2 days. After that, she would vomit maybe once a day or once or twice every couple of days. Then came the accidents around the house. She started peeing and pooping whenever, wherever. She used to sleep with me, but we had to stop because she started peeing several times in the night right where she slept. So she started sleeping in her crate. She started peeing and pooping in her crate - completely unusual. She would also vomit in her crate. Even though there was pee or poo or vomit in her crate, she would still go in to rest. She rested a lot and I noticed she started to always be shaking or have tremors.

We started cleaning her crate daily and putting in new blankets. We also started putting her in doggy diapers. She would still go to the bathroom outside when we took her out, sometimes pooping or peeing 2-3 times in a 10-15 minute walk. Her stool was normal looking and firm most of the time. Some days she would have diarrhea, other days she wouldn't. At this time, I noticed she was looking skinny. She is a small dog. It doesn't take much weight loss for her to start looking skinny. I switched meal times from twice a day to a full bowl of dog food all day every day. That seemed to help as she stopped losing weight, but she didn't gain any weight. I assumed that the kids weren't keeping up with her meal schedule. She also started drinking a lot of water and we had to refill her water bowl many, many times a day as she would empty it completely dry many times a day.

The next thing I noticed is she started scouring for food, refusing her food. She started eating non-food items wherever she could find and whatever she could find. She was always on the hunt for food, but her bowl was full; or I would find her bowl partially full, with the Beneful brand remaining in the bowl and most of the Petco brand gone. She had started taking mouthfuls of food out of her bowl and dropping it on the floor and trying to eat only the Petco brand. It made a huge mess.

Next, the worst diarrhea started. Pineapple started having multiple episodes of severe diarrhea, usually lasting 1-2 days, with a few days between each episode. The diarrhea was at times dark and wrong looking, and one stool was filled with blood. As we thought she had been eating non-food items over her food, we started restricting her to the kitchen unless she was being held or directly supervised in hopes that if we kept everything off the kitchen floor, it would reduce the episodes of diarrhea. All of these symptoms occurred very quickly, sometimes concurrently, over the course of 3-4 weeks. She would get worse than better, then a little worse than better. It was so hard to gauge what was going on. She is new to our family and we wondered if maybe the environment she came from wasn't as good as it should have been.

After reading all these stories, I am convinced it was the food, which is now thrown away. Not even a full bag of Beneful eaten, but the similarities with what our poor girl has been going through to all of these stories is just frightful. She has been only on the Petco natural dry brand now for two days. She is sleepy, but already looks like she has filled out a bit. She is very lazy and tired, but for the first time she had a dry night in her crate since we started the Beneful (no pee, no poop, no diarrhea, no vomit). I am going to continue to monitor her for improvement and hope to get her to the vet if there is no fast improvement. I am just sick about Purina right now. Shame on them.

Purina fiesta needs to be recalled.. It made my dog sick - puking and diarrhea! Never been like that until he ate that food. Something is causing it. Figure it out and recall. And actually post my whole review honestly.

My dog has never had problems with other foods or been ill. He's up to date and healthy. But my 3-year-old shorkie pup didn't seem to be acting like himself a few days ago after I fed him the Purina fiesta dry dog food. I thought maybe he was just sluggish that day. The next day after he ate, he got sick and puked up his dry food. I cleaned it up then he had bad diarrhea and pooped on the floor which he never does and he can control his bowels. I fed him other food and thought he was sick from something else.

A few days later, I gave him some dry food again and decided to soften it a little with water. He ate it then had a puke trail from it almost immediately. I'm never feeding him that again. It scared me so bad. How many different brands or puppy foods have to get recalled each year? How many puppies have to become ill, have complications or die? This needs to be attended to and not sold. There is a cause as to why this is making so many ill. Let's figure it out!

My two dogs became ill after eating Beneful. My first dog began having diarrhea that was dark and eventually turned to solid red. We took her to the vet after she became lethargic and refused to eat (12-8-12). They did blood work, stool samples and tested for a variety of parasites. Everything came back normal. They noticed her stomach area was swollen and wanted to do an x-ray. After taking about cost and having to take her to a specialist, we decided we would try the gastrointestinal dog food, probiotic and antibiotic that they were going to use to treat her. They also gave her an IV because she was dehydrated. We decided to feed both dogs the gastrointestinal food for ease.

On January 5, 2013, we restarted the normal dog food. On January 11, 2013, we noticed that our second dog was having the same problems as our first dog and was throwing up. We finally took her to the vet today (1-19-13) and they did the same test as our other dog and everything came back normal. The vet mentioned they had a few other dogs that came in with the same problems and were using the same dog food. We have spent over $1,200 to get our dog's health after eating this food. I threw the rest of the bag away tonight and will no longer buy Beneful or any luring dog food!

Saturday, following Thanksgiving 2012, my very healthy 11-year-old Maltese fell ill. He would not eat or drink, could not walk straight and vomited. On Monday, I took him to the vet. She did blood work and found he had severe pancreatitis and severe kidney failure. She wanted him admitted to the hospital, so we did that for one night. Then she allowed me to bring him home where my family and I administered fluids via IV and antibiotics with immunizations of anti-nausea med and pain. We did this for two weeks. He passed away on Dec. 15, 2012. I had him for eleven and a half years. I loved him so much. He was a member of my family. All I did was feed him a good product, take care of him, and love him. He loved me too. We were also out vet bills, but that would have been all right if he could have gotten well and lived.
