I have fed my German Shepherd mix, twice a day for years. In the morning dry and in the evening a mix of dry and wet. I noticed his lack of energy as well as a tumor on the side of his head. I feed this to my longtime pet. Blaming that his vomiting was the result of other members in my household feeding him outside of his schedule feeding times. I noticed that he consistently wants 2 go outside to urinate and sleeping constantly. Then as I was sharing a moment of bliss petting him, I noticed a tumor on his head just in front of his ear. He cries like he has pain all the time. I love this dog. He is family. I put my trust in "Purina," that they as a company would take care in their product. And now I'm afraid my best friend is dying because of their product. Now, the trips to the vet are going to be hard, financially and well as mentally. My best friend can't tell me what's wrong, and I hurt when he hurts.

One week before Thanksgiving 2013, my Black Lab Chloe stopped eating her Beneful healthy weight food, which she had been eating for a couple of years. 2 cups in the morning and 1 cup for dinner. She had never turned down her food before. She started to vomit that evening and not act normal. We shook it off as just an upset tummy, but the next morning she was the same. She was not eating but drinking a lot of water. Chloe started to dribble (urine) in the house which she never did before so we assumed it was because of the extra water she had been drinking. We were leaving the next morning to go to N.C. for the holiday. Knowing she wasn't feeling good we stopped every 2 hrs. to let her out on the eight-hr. trip. We gave her a hamburger (she never had before) and she gobbled it up. That night she vomited it up.
The next day we took her to the Vet in N.C. The vet examined her and took x-rays and blood works, saying she was suffering from toxics and had jaundice. Something was affecting her liver. They transferred her to a vet hospital for further testing. At the hospital she was put on meds and had ultrasounds done They said the testing showed toxic damage to the liver. The hospital kept her for two nights feeding her antibiotics with no improvement and releasing her to come home on oral meds. and go to her own Vet to continue treatment. While she was at the hospital we Googled her dog food (Beneful healthy weight). Bang it hit us right away. So many complaints about this food. Same symptoms, same problems.
We were shocked at all the cases about this product. Chloe was taken to her home Vet and examined and promptly put on IVs to sustain her life. She spent two nights there and the Vet said he was baffled that she was not responding to meds. As a last resort in medication he gave her steroids. We brought her home on steroids and she was acting a little more normal, eating small milk bones, toast, scrambled eggs. The next morning she started acting strange again. I talked with the Vet about bringing her in the next morning. That night my beloved Chloe died in her sleep 12/10/13. She gave me great happiness for 7 yrs. and I will go to my grave thinking that I poisoned her with Beneful dog food. I hope someone will read this story and be able to save their pet and not feel the pain/guilt that I do right now. STAY AWAY FROM BENEFUL DOG FOOD!! Total medical cost around $3500.00.

I usually don't write reviews - good or bad. However, my 5 year old Miniature Pinscher is very ill with pancreatitis and had to be started on insulin for diabetes. He had been on Beneful Healthy Weight Management for approximately the past one and one half years. At this point, I can't say that it was the Beneful, but he is showing dramatic improvement since being taken off the Beneful food and being put on Hill's Science Diet for diabetic dogs along with insulin twice a day. If he continues to recover as he has been doing, then I will definitely feel that there is a definite link to his illness and the Beneful. He almost died. I am an RN and noticed symptoms of excessive thirst, urination, and rapid weight loss this past week and took him to the vet. I did not know that Purina had these complaints, but hopefully my Min Pin was caught in time to make a full recovery. Please use caution if you choose to feed your dog the Beneful food.

I fed my dog Beneful dog treats and she became very ill. Not giving her any more. I found other complaints that Beneful is causing liver failure in dogs and they are dying. I called my sister. All her dog has ever eat is Beneful. She said he is sick and won't touch the food. She took him to the vet yesterday and he is dying with liver and kidney failure. A sudden onslaught. This food needs to be taken off the market. These dogs are our babies and this food is killing them made by Purina.

In 2012 I had two 15 year old, female Jack Russel/Basenji mix sisters. I had been feeding them Beneful for years. In February Mariah the smaller one suddenly stopped eating, was constantly drinking water, voiding in the house, she became lethargic and suffered with ataxia and seizures. We took her to the vet who changed her diet to "Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul", for older dogs. Both girls liked this food very much. After a few weeks Mariah got her bounce back, put on weight, was drinking normally again, the ataxia and seizures stopped.
In September I decided to buy a large bag of this food so I didn't have the 45 minute drive each month for their food. For some reason they would not eat from this bag. They ate at the scraps I gave them, just not this food. Maybe it was old? So I started to feed them Beneful again. Back came the symptoms. Multiple seizures, ataxia, weight loss, constant drinking, voiding in the house, and a new symptom for Mariah. She had these fast growing, grape sized lumps under her left "armpit" that slowly spread up her chest to her neck. She pulled out all the fur from the affected area. Back to the vet, who thought the "rash" might be tumours, but tumours don't grow that fast, and gave me an antibiotic for Mariah. I kept the area clean with apple cider vinegar and water. The "rash" stopped spreading but did not heal. She became so weak she could not stand for long. I carried her up and down the stairs, held her little bum up so she could void without getting herself soiled. She developed a rattle in her chest and I knew she had pneumonia. Mariah passed away in my arms on our way to the vets to have her put to sleep.
It was after that I saw a report on facebook about Beneful. Mariah's sister Morgan was beginning to show the same symptoms as Mariah, except for the rash. I took her off Beneful and put her on Cesar for small dogs. Within days there were no more seizures, vomiting, excessive thirst. etc. Within a week the ataxia also stopped. Morgan has not shown any more of the typical "Beneful symptoms" and is a healthy senior, who will be 17 in February. God willing. I warn people about this food now. So they and their dogs don't have to go through the agony we did.

I have 2 dogs and have fed them Beneful dog food since I've had them and one of them was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. I do not know for sure that it was the dog food but she has been on meds and still got worse. She had 10 seizures in one night, this past Sunday, had to be admitted. It has cost thousands. I didn't think that a dog food could have anything to do with it until I did some research. I am so upset. I changed her food and she is on meds and was on them before this last bout of seizures. She has not had any yet since I stopped the food. Only time will tell but to me if there is any question that it could be making animals sick, it should be recalled!

I had switched my dog to Beneful IncrediBites because he was having trouble biting the bigger food. We woke up one morning to my dog vomiting and pooping massive blood. I immediately took him to the vet. There we found out that my dog had suffered from poisoning and his insides had basically ruptured. There was nothing the vet could do for him. We had to have my baby put down on my birthday this year. PLEASE DO NOT FEED THIS HORRIBLE FOOD TO YOUR DOG!!!! I have read online that other people have had this same issue with this dog food, looking into a lawsuit!!! Purina (the makers of Beneful) need pay for what they have done to many families and poor innocent animals!!!

My beloved dog Bear started eating Beneful healthy weight from October 14th thru the 18th and Bear died on the 19th. She suffered terribly her last day! She vomited every night and our other dog Tanner had a seizure and vomited in this same time frame. We discussed the dogs acting as if they were poisoned on 16th but there was nothing new around here except the dog food. Who would think the dog food could kill our beloved pets? The dogs Bear and Tanner ate supper at their usual 4pm. They eat dry food with 1 bag of moist Ol Roy brand that they have been eating for years. Bear is a 9 year old yellow lab and Bernese mountain dog mix, 105 pounds and Tanner is a 6 year old Pekingese mix, 16 pounds.
Bear had her health issues with skin problems and hip dysplasia but she never was sick like that week. She would vomit in the evening when we were sleeping a large pile of the dog food and another pile of phlegm. The fourth morning there was blood in the vomit so I called the vet Jeff at The Ark in Eau Claire, WI. We discussed the situation and he was not so concerned with the blood since she had been vomiting. He suggest pepto bismol 4 times per day to sooth the stomach linings. We did as he suggest. The 5th day she did not vomit in the bedroom but went outside at 11am and vomited 5 separate times. She then crawled in a old dog house that she would not go near for 8 years. She knew she was near the end.
My husband called me home from work. We got her into the house and comforted her as well as we could. Spoke with the vet and he had a family emergency and we could take her in on Saturday to another vet but she passed away Friday night at 11:20pm. The food looked like normal dog food, but certainly had to be toxic. The food was purchase at Sam's Club on Gateway Dr in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Food details Purina Beneful healthy weight dry dog food that came in a 42 lb bag UPC 1780014584. The best used by date is September 2014 #324710841125L01 followed the date.
I called Sams Club and spoke with Carry the club manager. She told me to call Purina which I did immediately and was told they would do a physical examination and if I wanted further testing but to have a chemical compound test and that would have to be done by me???? And they would use the results! They did give me a reference number of **. They are sending a container for a physical examination. They said I could call 4 to 6 weeks after sending for the results. So in the meantime how many pet have to suffer??? Something is wrong with this picture. How difficult is it to have a proper testing of the food done?
We have spoken with Kevin **, the environmental Enforcement Specialist here in Eau Claire. He works for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. He was at our home and took details of what happened. He walked around the house and looked at their consumption of food and water. Our dogs did not even go on walk without Norm! They were very pampered pets and loved so very much. We are just sick that more cannot be done for our pets. They are our children and there certainly does need to be better control of ingredients and toxins. PS: have not seen that container from Purina! I think they know exactly what is going on and just want to sell their food and could care less about innocent animals suffering.

I took my dog off Beneful just about a month ago after my wife had told me there had been problems reported with it. I wish I had done it when she first told me! I had no idea the problems were this bad, and now my dog is starting to exhibit some symptoms. However, I just started giving her some Pedigree Dentastix (mint) within this last week and someone else reported their dog having the same symptoms from them that all of you report from Beneful, so I can't be positive. HOWEVER, I have a theory. Purina says they keep testing Beneful and finding no problems. But what are they testing for? They searched for aflatoxin, didn't find any. Last May, state regulators took several Beneful samples, looking specifically for E. coli and salmonella and found none. What are they NOT testing for?
To me, all of the symptoms sound like HEAVY METAL poisoning, specifically, arsenic: **: "Symptoms include drooling, vomiting, bloody diarrhea containing mucus, bloody urine, muscle cramps, weakness, hair loss, skin rashes, gastrointestinal pain, convulsions, trembling and staggering." For a complete chart of symptoms and metals, you can go to the following website. If you do a search in your browser for arsenic, you will see how it comes up for each symptom mentioned (except hair loss, which a person reported; only Thallium matched that): **. Have your vet check for heavy metal poisoning. There are treatments for that. If anyone does (before me!) let us know what they find!

We adopted our dog from a shelter almost 7 years ago and continued to give him Beneful original (they recommended) ever since. He truly loved the taste of the food and it was readily available and in our budget. Over the last year, we noticed greenish discharge from his eyes and leg biting. The vet said it may have been seasonal allergy so we ignored it and treated with medication (he checked, not fleas or ticks). Lately we also noticed many small growths all over him and the biting worsened. The vet gave us antibiotics and said to put him on rice and burger for a few days and switch food slowly to another brand. The chewing soon stopped and open sores healed....we again returned to the Beneful - he loved the taste and we still had a lot left in the bag.
Things quickly changed again. For the last 3 days, he has had no food and drinks excessively. He has had trouble breathing, panting and blowing his nose hard to catch his breath and begun to vomit green/yellow bile. It is so hard when he looks at you with those trusting eyes for help, and you can do nothing but pet and hold him. Today came with watery red diarrhea and muscle spasms. As a last resort, I searched for these symptoms and the word Beneful popped up - I couldn't have been more shocked. We ruled out everything else - no new: detergent, air fresheners, laundry soap for bedding, leaves in yard, table scraps or treats, etc.
I hope after reading about the problems with Beneful we have caught it in time. How many dogs have to die before something is done? I am saving the bag with lot # and will forward a complaint to FDA and Dept. of Agriculture. I, too, didn't want to believe something I trusted for years could be hurting my dog but something must have changed in the last year with the food or ingredients. Please take this seriously and watch for signs of distress and ACT QUICKLY taking away the Beneful if in doubt (Also to the poster who says that we are making this up and just need someone to blame - I sincerely hope you really are a dog owner and not just a talking head/blogger for the company and that you never have to experience this pain yourself).

Started feeding my 11 pound chihuahua Beneful mixed with table food at 1 year of age after getting a free sample and seeing how much she loved it. Also fed her the Beneful treats. At age 3 she began having peeing in the house issues. I took her off the Beneful suspecting the dog food after researching on the web. Took about a week and the peeing in the house stopped. I also noticed she has a lot more spunk now. Glad I figured this out before it was too late. Will not use any Beneful product ever again and spreading the word.

My husband bought the dog food last month - Beneful, which I never buy, and I purchased the Beneful Baked Delights Chicken and Cheese star treats. Two weeks ago, my dog fell very sick. I have never seen her like this as she would just lie there not even lifting her head when I called her name, she would just follow me with her eyes. When she did get up, it was to drink water and go outside and pee. I managed to get her to the vet and found she was running a very high fever. She started to improve two days later and is finally back to her old self. Then I read about the Beneful recall and the problems with the chicken treats. BINGO! Or maybe it was the combo of both, eating the Beneful dog food along with the Chicken and star treats... Consumer beware.

If I could give this ZERO stars... I would. First, let me start off by saying my dogs have always been in good health AND go to the vet yearly for checkup and vaccinations. This food seems to be hurting many, many dogs. I have one dog that is currently now experiencing seizures (vet believed she could be going into liver failure not that long ago) and another that's vomiting and having stomach problems. Two dogs have been rushed to the vet ER as of recent and $600 spent within a week. I've concluded it has to be the dog food. Please save your dogs and STOP feeding them this crap!!!!

I fed my dog Beneful and Chicken Jerky Treat from Milos Kitchen. In March 2013, Zoey, my toy Pomeranian was a healthy dog one week, the next dying in my arms. My other dog Napoleon was sick as well, but recovered. Since Zoey died I always wondered how she got so sick so fast. It just didn't make sense - she was like a puppy, prancing and playing all over the place. When the news came out yesterday on the Jerky Treats, I was stunned. I did searches on pet food safety..... When I read the stories about Beneful, tears welled up in my eyes. I was reading my story over and over again. Same symptoms, same outcome. Bloody stool, vomiting, excessive water consumption, not eating, seizures, finally organ failure.
I brought her to the vet 3 times. She was given IV fluids, antibiotics, diarrhea medicine. There was nothing they could do. I had her euthanized. I never had to do something so painful... holding her while the life slipped away from her. My best friend had to hold me up while I held her in those last moments. I just want to put this out there and make other pet owners aware. If I can save just one pet, I'll feel better about losing my own. Here is my favorite picture of my beloved pet. I want the makers of Beneful to see what they took from my life way too soon.

I am very concerned about what is happening with dog food. I have owned a boarding facility for over 12 years. Most clients provide their own dog food. Most used commercial dog food. In the last 7 years, I have seen dogs get sick and some die, and I think it was from dog food. I also saw a lot of cancer. I usually use a natural dog food that I feel I can trust. I do not mind paying more, as I love my pets like my family. Last month, I ran out of the usual brand that I use. Since I did not have time to drive an hour to my pet store, I purchased Beneful Fiesta made by Purina.
My dogs have been very healthy and see their vet on a regular basis for health check ups and dental cleanings. After buying the food, my Pomeranian who is 1 year old, put her nose up from the food, walked away and started coughing. My 7-year-old Doxey did the same; however he sneezed. I thought it was because they were telling me they knew it was not their usual brand that they enjoy. They would not go near it for a day and a half. Then my Doxey started eating it. My Pom started to follow. Within one week of them eating this Beneful, they started more coughing, sneezing, vomiting, and peeing all over. They both needed a lot of water! A lot of water. Our Pom even had two seizures.
Something is very wrong here. Too many dog food products are being recalled and some that should be are not. It is time that something be done. I called Purina today. They told me they were sorry and offered to give me my money back. They also told me that they test every small amount of food that goes out. I understand that products can be made in one area, and shipped to be packed at many other areas. Could it be happening in another packaging plant? Maybe instead of all these companies wanting to give us our money back, they should do what is truly appreciated. FIND THE PROBLEM! I told Purina this.
As I say this to you, my two sweet four-legged children are watching me talk to you. They have very concerned faces on. I beg you to please take the lead on this investigation. If you want to prove what kind of company you truly are, why not join other companies, in finding out why this is happening. Please read and view the videos people are putting out there. Maybe you won't as you have already seen too many. Just seeing these pets suffer should be enough! I saw what my pets went through. I asked Purina to lead the way. I love my pets! We all do! Please look into this. With multi complaints out there, it has to be real. How can I help?

I have 2 dogs who have been eating Beneful Healthy Weight. Last night, my American Eskimo began yelping in pain. At first I thought maybe he twisted his leg while playing. I checked his legs, all were fine. I then went down his body touching the left side of his abdomen. He began yelping intensely. He was unable to stand up, lay down, or even move without being in pain. My husband and I decided to take him to the emergency vet. While putting his collar on, I noticed his gums turning white. We got him in the car, on my husband's lap. He began having difficulty breathing. During this time his entire mouth turned grayish white.
Upon arrival to the vet, he was put on oxygen and an ultrasound done. The vet asked if he had gotten into any poison? There are no poisons in our home nor has any of our surroundings changed. All I could think is we just purchased and opened a new bag of Beneful dog food....could there be something wrong with this food? The vet did the ultrasound and told us our dog's abdomen was filled with blood and he was in critical condition and there was an issue with his liver. She stated they could try to save him but it would require a blood transfusion and intense surgery in which she felt he would not survive. She recommended we euthanize him.
This dog was our child... He was not certified but acted as a service dog to my husband who is a 100% disabled Veteran. The Vet informed us the surgery would cost $4000.00 and she did not think he would make it through the procedure. After talking with her and a lot of tears, it was decided he had to be euthanized. This has been very difficult not on on myself but on my husband who has been dependent on our dog. I came home and began to research the food to see if that may have caused the issue with our dog who has been healthy to this point. He was fine up to this point...playing like a puppy!
I feel Purina needs to look into this, see these complaints and investigate. Folks are not only paying huge vet bills, dealing with ill pets, losing companions, but there are folks who depend on these animals, who view these animals as family members, who use these animals as therapy dogs. This is very unfair of them to take the consumers' money and not to put it back into the product and investigate when there is an issue that is hurting and killing animals. This is pure abuse and neglect. There are laws against abuse and neglect of animals... Why aren't companies charged when and if their product causes harm?

Our Chihuaha had a terrible problem with loose stools, sometimes bloody and very frequently. She seemed to poop all day long in the house on the pee pads. We switched to organic dog food and within five days noticed a completely different experience. Her stools are larger, solid and twice a day. She goes outside and not in the house, and seems to have more energy. I'm convinced that her problems were directly related to the Beneful. BIG MISTAKE within a few days my closed pantry was filled with flying small mouth like bugs and crawling larvae or maggots on the walls and corners. My beloved golden retriever, Koty, died on September 23 at 5:30 p.m. as my wife, my son and I were rushing him to an emergency veterinary clinic in Wilmington, Del., from my mother's home in a remote part of Maryland's Eastern Shore. He was 9-1/2 years old. My son, who idolized Koty, held him in his arms as he slipped away. In the week preceding his death, Koty was the picture of health. With the exception of a couple of benign fatty tumors he had developed in the last couple of years, he had no health issues. He was a big, broad-shouldered golden, strong as an ox, happy and still very active for his age.
About six days before he died, we were running out of Science Diet, his usual food. I was pressed for time, so I picked up some Beneful adult dog food at BJ's to save a trip to PetSmart, where I would normally purchase his Science Diet. He began eating the Beneful on Wednesday morning and consumed eight meals -- four in the mornings and four in the evenings -- between Wednesday and Saturday evening. He was really excited about arriving in Maryland to visit my mother, whom he loved. We took a ride in her golf cart, took a walk, he ate his dinner, hung out with us, and everything seemed normal.
But on Sunday morning he became ill, banging on our bedroom door to go outside, where he promptly threw up. His condition remained stable for about 7-8 hours after that. He didn't want food but did drink some water and although he clearly wasn't feeling 100%, his symptoms didn't appear life-threatening. His breathing was normal. His eyes were clear. He had endured an upset stomach several times in the past and had had occasional bouts of nausea or diarrhea, but they were routine illnesses that cleared up in a matter of a day or two. This time proved much different.
I was busy helping my mother, who is elderly, with numerous chores around the house and didn't check on Koty between about 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. During that time, his condition deteriorated dramatically. When I checked on him at 4:30, his eyes were glazed and he seemed to be having leg spasms. Clearly, he was in bad shape. So we packed up our stuff as quickly as possible, loaded him into the back of the van and began our desperate, futile drive for help. As I described above, the outcome was fatal for Koty and terribly traumatic for all of us.
Our veterinarian performed a necropsy and discovered that Koty's liver and gall bladder were a bright orange color typical of severe jaundice caused by some type of liver illness. He asked me how Koty was acting before the day he died and was surprised to hear his condition had been absolutely normal. He said that in the case of severe liver disease such as Koty's, symptoms usually appear many weeks ahead of the acute phase. He advised me not to obtain testing of tissue samples, saying that it would be very expensive and might not ever pinpoint the cause of Koty's death. He said the illness could have been caused by accidental poisoning or some type of virus or bacteria. He was doubtful that the dog food had anything to do with it.
However, in view of all the complaints I've read here regarding Beneful, I am not as doubtful. I can't help but connect Koty's death with the fact that he started eating this food only five days before he died. I am starting to search for a lab that can analyze the food, which I have not disposed of. If testing proves the food to be harmless, then at least I can rule it out as a cause. We have no other suspects at this point because we're not aware that he ingested a poison of any type, although the rapidity of his illness and death suggest poison could have been the cause.
Koty was a great dog, ebullient, enthusiastic and incredibly loyal and attached to us. We adored him, as did our kittens. He is pictured with one of them here. Koty's loss has left a massive hole in our lives.

I hardly write reviews, but after reading all of these eerily similar experiences, I felt I must share my story as well. We fed our border collie, Sierra (now 6 yr old), Beneful healthy weight and plain Beneful for approximately 3 years. We moved to Hawaii from San Diego and in order to include our dog in the move we had to have her complete a process of blood work that is required in order to avoid a 120 day quarantine by the state. While completing her blood work for clearance in San Diego, we discovered she had slightly elevated LFTs (liver enzymes). She was not symptomatic and appeared completely healthy.
We decided to check her LFTs a few months later (when we arrived to HI) to assess the trend and her LFTs doubled. No other organ function tests were abnormal. It was then we decided to give her Denosyl and vitamin E (a liver antioxidant). Her LFTs trended down after adding this to her diet, but she continued to eat Beneful because we hadn't connected her elevation to her food. A little while later, she had one incontinent episode (urinating in the house - She NEVER does this) which we attributed to the move. Then she had a second episode and we noticed she started drinking more water. So we took her to the vet to rule out diabetes and check all her labs out; they were all fine. This didn't happen again in the ensuing months and she wasn't acting lethargic or different so we put it behind us.
She is a high energy dog so we walk her and hike with her often. One cool and cloudy day on a hike (a hike she had completed before on a hotter day with no issue) she collapsed. I carried her down the mountain, running, to get her out of the sun and cool her off. When we got to the parking lot in the shade, she was acting anxious and refused to drink water (this is not in her character) so I attempted to give her ice and doused her in water. It was then I noticed her gums were bleeding. I then began to assess her and open her legs to look at her abdomen and saw petechiae (small capillary hemorrhages). It was then I knew she was in critical condition (DIC) so I rushed her to an emergency vet.
She was diagnosed with a heat stroke, but what they also found at that time was her LFTs were >5000 (normal is 0-118; her prior trend was 150, 350 then 120, 115). Although the heat stroke could have caused the multiorgan dysfunction, I don't believe her liver would have shut down immediately. Upon admission her BUN/CR (renal function) were normal and of course due to the nature of the illness eventually rose putting her into renal failure. Ultimately, I think she was unknowingly going into hepatic encephalopathy (in liver failure) prior to the hike which compounded her heat intolerance/heat stroke. She was in the ICU for 1 week.
My husband and I are in medicine (MD & DNP) and we understand dogs are very similar to humans in respect to treatments and pathophysiology. She is thankfully doing fine but we have since changed her diet to Great Life. She has had no issues with her LFTs but we have been continuing the Denosyl and Vit E. I do feel that it was ultimately the Beneful that cost us $6000 in vet bills and the near loss of our canine child. There are too many similar stories for this to be coincidental. I also think that the chain of events that occurred will ultimately contribute to her shortened lifespan but only time will tell. There must be a way for us as consumers to unite and hold Purina accountable for their product. I am sorry to those of you who lost your pet. They are truly a wonderful species and deserve justice if malfeasance can be proven. This is coming from a non litigious, objective individual, who only believes litigation is necessary if obvious neglect, or greed is the root cause of the wrongdoing.

Four-year old rottweiler was fed Beneful in December. Started with loose bowels and very high water consumption. Vet told us that toxins got into his diet. The only possibility was the dog food (Beneful). After many vet visits and tests, we are going to have to put him down. He has lost all his muscle mass and his stomach is very bloated. Found out about the bad reports too late. The damage was already done. People need to be protected from this company.

I see where some new people have the same problem I had with my Bellarose back in Dec 2012. I noticed that on that Saturday morning she was acting different. She was drinking lots of water so I watched. About 1 hour later, she went to poo and she is pad trained. It was nothing but blood that looked like jello. Took her to the emergency hospital. They ask, had she been poisoned? Of course not, she is an inside dog. Told her that she was acting not right so they took her in the back, put her on IV for days. Said her liver and kidneys were trying to shut down. To care for her, those 2 days were around $2500.00. Then picked her up from there, took her to my vet. They also kept her on IV and when I would get off work, I would pick her up and then the next morning, I would bring her back.
This went on for 5 days and then there were the reg vet cost which was around $600.00 Bellarose made it through. I was one of the lucky ones. I contacted Purina and they said they would check it out. I even sent them the exact food she was eating and I know this is what made her sick. They said the food was fine. Now do you think I am a fool? All these dogs getting sick there, explain that and all eating your food so don't let them tell you there were no complaints because they are not telling the truth. I will never let any pet of mine eat anything from Purina. My dog will have to eat I/D low fat the rest of her life because of this and let me tell you it is $33.00 Per 12 cans but you know what, my dog is worth it to me!!!!! Purina just does not care. It's not their Pet!!!!

We have been feeding our dog's Beneful for as long as I can remember. He will be 7 years old in Dec. He has been to the vet for the last 2 weeks on IV fluids & Antibiotics. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with him because his vitals was good, he had good color, but blood work showed high white counts & high kidney levels. The antibiotics did help bring the levels down but after doing a full body scan, they have found his digestive tract isn't working and they can't figure out why this has happened. After reading the reviews on here, I'm afraid it may be this food we've been feeding him. :( Please reconsider feeding your dogs something else. (His symptoms were throwing up, lethargic, wobbling on back leg and not eating anything.)

My English Setter has been eating healthy weight Beneful Dog Food for about five years. She recently became sick in the last month. She has been drinking a lot of water, having accidents in the house, and needs to go out constantly. I took her to the vet today because we're very worried about her. She lost five pounds since her last visit. After lots of tests it came back that she has the start of liver failure. My vet believes that it is most likely caused by Purina Beneful Healthy Weight dog food. Jasmine is in liver medication and we switched her food immediately. I pray she makes it. Tonight, I am sitting with my dog, Sienna. My husband has just dug her grave in the backyard. She has been our faithful companion for 13 1/2 years. Today, she was diagnosed with kidney failure. The Vet suggested it would be humane to "put her to sleep" today or tomorrow morning. At the last minute before his office closed, we called to schedule 9:30 in the morning. Her story is much like the others listed here. She was fed Beneful. The last 2 bags had been Healthy Weight and Radiance.
May 2013, she started having trouble with her hind legs. Her gait became wobbly and she had trouble getting up. She started vomiting and would yelp in pain. We thought it might be arthritis pain. The Vet checked her out and did an MRI to check for arthritis. Her bones were strong. Her heart was strong. He diagnosed a pulled muscle. He prescribed medication. She seemed to improve. Shortly, thereafter, the symptoms started getting worse. Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, trouble standing and wobbly walk. She would push her food bowl as far away had she could. Once she pushed it all the way across the room. She was always so thirsty. She had her first ever seizures. Falling down, with all four legs straight out and eyes rolling. We were so frightened.
We fed her only her favorite foods, chicken, hamburger, beef. She quit eating the Beneful. Too late, we started researching. We were in shock. She had eaten Beneful for years so we did not suspect it. We removed the Beneful. We cooked her food. She started eating again but cautiously. We thought she would make it. She showed an improvement in energy. Then it all seemed too much for her. We started feeding her each morsel by hand. Then a couple of days ago, she started eating only a couple of bites a day. This week I told a manager at Sam's Club, I believed the dog food had made my dog sick. She said she would email the home office. Maybe it will help.
At the beginning of 2013, Sienna was happy and healthy and weighed 50 lbs. Today she weighs 34 lbs. Sienna is a beautiful retriever, lab, chow mix. She is a great friend and companion. She is now lying beside me dying. I wish she would go tonight in her sleep so she would not have to endure tomorrow. I am so sad.

Our dogs have always been Halo dogs. We were traveling and had neglected to pack the food to take with us and ended up having to run to the only store open when we arrived late night in a small rural area. Needless to say, no Halo at a discount superstore. We bought the Beneful. Almost immediately we noticed both dogs, a Boston terrier and Australian shepherd, began scratching excessively. Because of the new area, we thought perhaps they had gotten into some skin allergen in the wooded area. I bathed them both and we restricted their movements outdoors. Next we noticed both of their skin was turning bright pink with flaky patches and even scabs. They were itching constantly. They began losing hair & lots of it! They started throwing up small amounts of dark brown, sticky yuck in the house at random times during the day & began having wetting accidents as well. Their water consumption doubled.
The Australian began whining and crying constantly and clawing at the doors immediately after she was let outside and preferred to stay kenneled nearly all day. Again, we assumed it was something to do with the change in environment. We had scheduled to see our vet upon our return when we realized things were getting really bad with both of them. We fed them both the Halo the day of our return and the pink of their skin was gone by the next morning. The vet said she would never have advised us to feed the dogs Beneful but that if they were eating, drinking and urinating it would be ok to watch them for a bit and not hurry in.
By day 3 back on our food, no more vomiting, no more scratching, and no more lethargy. Their hair began to grow back in after about 10 days. No more Beneful for us. Sad that people who cannot afford or do not have access to quality dog food have no idea that this food could be killing their pets. I am just grateful our problems manifested themselves as they did and nothing more serious, though we have been advised to continue watching them for lingering issues.

My vet said my 9 1/2 year old retired greyhound Wilber was getting too heavy so I switched his food to Beneful Healthy Weight dog food. Soon after, he started having problems: back pain, loss of appetite, hacky little cough and spells of seeming overly tired. Went to the vet with the back problems and they said maybe a hurt back or a degenerative disease. But he got over it after a time. Then the throwing up started. I heard that hacky cough in the night, that's when he came to get me to go outside. He had thrown up twice in his bed. Took him to the vet the next day and they gave him something for nausea and sent him home. Over the next 4 weeks, he seemed to get a little better everyday. Then he started throwing up again. Five times in about 4 hours.
I was going out of town that weekend so he stayed at the vet for the next four days. He had a fever and need something for nausea and had to be force feed. When I got back in town, he was still very sick but they said he could go home. Next day, he was back at the vet because he was having trouble walking, was very weak and drinking and peeing a lot. They said he was dehydrated, had a high fever and there were crystals in his urine. They gave trans-dermal fluids and put him on antibiotics and sent him home again. It was back to the vet the next day for IV fluids and his fever was down some but he still had one. He has not been eating anything at this point, but still drinking and peeing a lot. Very weak.
Now it's the weekend and I have to take him to the Emergency Animal Clinic for around the clock IV fluids because my vet is not open weekends and they say he needs them. He walked in under his own power but never walked again. He continued to get worse, his kidneys and pancreas stopped functioning. He still was not eating. Still on antibiotics, he started to bleed out and got plasma. Then he had a seizure and got Valium to stop them. He got to the point he could not raise his head and they put him on pain medications. I put him down that Sunday night because he was suffering too much and the vet said he was not going to get better.
After he died, the his blood test came back positive for tick born disease. The Emergency Animal Clinic vet said that his symptoms were not consistent with tick born disease. There was something else going on with Wilber. Now I see the symptoms other dogs have suffered after eating Beneful Healthy Weight and I feel in my heart it was the food that ultimately caused his death. I spent about $3800.00 and it did not save my baby dog. I know he was old but according to the vet, he was healthy and everything looked good at his last wellness visit; he was just too heavy. Even with his back pain, all his blood work looked good.

Our Pointer/Lab mix was a pitiful rescue afraid of his own shadow. He was a gift to our 10 daughter, a voracious animal lover. My wife was the one who picked out Beneful. I asked only that she be sure the food did not have any possibly harmful ingredients or junk of god knows what sort. She told me it was a recommendation from a friend who had several large and small to medium dogs. Well, I just came across this Beneful issue today. The last dog food scare was of some green product, made in China that had the possibility of clogging up the dog's innards. But on my life, our dog's only problems have been the usual pulled ligament. He walks around a lot patrolling the house and outside constantly and a case of pneumonia, no doubt, owing to what I understood to be the cruelty of the former owner in keeping the dog locked up in a cage outside and using water hose pressure either to punish or sport. But now he was safe and loved. He had stomach aches but more often because like humans, he had tummy aches but nothing alarming.
I'm very sorry as any pet owner can not help but be for those whose stories I read are not as fortunate in their course of events as mine was for our pet. I cannot claim to know if it was or was not the food and I just got lucky, but our dog is headed for 10 years old, happy, content, king of the castle and sees the vet only for his shots once a year. We have been very lucky in having been able to raise the dog however the fates caused it, to be so strong it took 3 doctor male assistants to hold him down for his shot, to be happy go lucky and foot loose and fancy free. I imagine we will continue to use Beneful for him until his last blessed day with us.

Sammy, my Welsh Corgi Pembroke, was on Beneful Healthy Weight nearly his whole life. He turned 6 years old this past July. In April of 2013, Sammy started to vomit once or twice a week. I took Sammy to Banfield Pet Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, the Oakview location. They took x-rays and a CBC blood test. They found nothing in the x-rays except for thickening of the intestine walls. They put Sammy on a low-fat food and prescribed pills for digestion and antibacterial and something to calm his stomach. He did well for a while but the symptoms came back after a few weeks. This scenario happened 3 times.
Finally, on the 4th visit back, Sammy was in pretty bad shape. More vomiting and diarrhea, lethargy, low energy and low appetite. They suspected Addison's disease at that point, but I already spent 600 dollars on blood tests, x-rays and prescriptions; I did not have the money to pay for the test to find out if it was Addison's. So, they moved forward and gave Sammy steroids, which is the traditional initial treatment for Addison's. Sammy stayed at the vet for an entire week and they got him back to normal. I took him back home and he stayed on the steroid medication.
Sammy did very well after that and I thought we were in the clear. He was even running and playing with his normal amount of energy. He was in very good condition, but then the symptoms returned, vomiting, diarrhea, low energy, lethargic, and this time refusing to eat food. By this time, it was mid-August. In a desperate measure to get my dog better care, I gave my dog up to a Vet Tech from the Banfield Pet Hospital, who was willing to help Sammy recover from his condition.
Unfortunately, it did not work out for my sweet dog and the Vet Tech dropped Sammy off at the Humane Society without warning. I had to go beg the humane society to turn my dog over. They were willing to turn him over to me after I told them about Sammy's medical history. Sammy was in much worse condition at that point so I took him straight back to Banfield Pet Hospital where they put him on IV fluids and steroids. They changed his food to a hypo-allergenic diet at that point and started to treat him for digestive issues. Sammy spent that night and the next day at the vet. He was very very weak but somewhat stabilized.
The first night back home, he did fine. He ate his new food and slept well. The next day, he stayed at the vet for the afternoon and ate his food and seemed to be improving. I took him back home again, which was this past Friday, August 30th, 2013. He was drinking excessive amounts of water so I took him out many times that night. I also got up at 3:00 am and took him out one more time. I also put potty pads throughout the house to encourage him to go to the bathroom inside while I slept.
I woke up at 9:00 am and there was vomit and diarrhea everywhere. He was leaning up next to the sofa shaking and breathing VERY heavy. He seemed to be extremely uncomfortable and I could not take seeing him in that condition. I then took him to an emergency vet clinic in Omaha, Nebraska - Mockingbird Animal Emergency Clinic, and had him put to sleep.
After reading about all of the identical complaints online, I AM CONVINCED THAT BENEFUL KILLED MY DOG. If there is a class action suit, I would like to be involved. I know Purina has had issues in the past, and I DO NOT want this one to slip by. Something very wrong happened to the Beneful dog food supply and Purina needs to pay for it. Sammy was my dear sweet baby. He helped me get through a divorce and the death of my mother to brain cancer. SAMMY WAS MY ONLY FAMILY MEMBER. I have no family now because Purina somehow, some way, was neglectful and overlooked A LETHAL MISTAKE in the production of their food. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL AFTER ALL OF THE REPORTED DOG DEATHS!!! WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY??????!!!!!!!
If there is a class action suit, I want to participate. I can provide ALL veterinary documents from the incident with my dog. I have spent approx 1,100.00 total for treatment, and 200.00 of that was spent to humanely put my dog to rest. All of the costs are on my "Care Credit" credit card that I applied for at Banfield Pet Hospital. I have already told all of my friends to stop feeding their dogs ANY Purina brands. If there is anything I can do to keep someone else from losing their dog, I want to do it.

I had switched her from IAMS about a month or so earlier because she was getting a little chunky. She developed a gagging type cough within a week. I thought it was possibly kennel cough because she had been at the vet for dental work a few days previous. However, after two weeks of treatment the cough did not improve and in fact Lucy became sicker. She stopped eating, lost two pounds (she only weighed 12 lbs to start) and her blood counts were all out of the normal range. Nothing we did helped. She showed problems with her pancreas and the cough continued. The vet also found a mass in her lung upon x-ray. Her condition deteriorated very rapidly over the next 10 days until I had no choice but to allow her to be euthanized. Her blood counts were so bad she was slowly dying a painful death as her abdomen was tender to the touch as well. My husband and I carried him outside, hoping the crisp winter air would help him perk up. He seemed to breathe a little easier and thankfully came around but had difficulty walking.
Fearing he had a stroke or heart attack, we took him to the vet where blood tests revealed extremely high (off the charts) liver values. Our vet said it wouldn't be long so we decided to take him home one last time. He didn't eat for about a week (not even our food or treats). As time went on, we noticed him getting a little "better". We decided to hold off on putting him down because we just weren't sure. He would have good days and bad, bouts of diarrhea, wobbly gait, and an on and off appetite.
About a month ago, I stumbled upon a site that detailed problems with Beneful dog food. Because many of the symptoms were the same as our dog's, we switched to a better quality food. Today, one month later, he "trots" when we go for a walk, goes up and down the stairs without a problem, no longer has a wobbly gait, no longer has loose stools, and has an excellent appetite. I am so happy I switched foods! It's been 6 months since his initial collapse and he is still with us. But it does take a couple of weeks to switch a dog's food. You are suppose to mix it and work up to it. Maybe it's the location of the factories that have problems and Wyoming and Michigan servicers don't have that problem. Maybe it's how you store it?? Or the place you buy it from. I first thought it may just be a stomach bug or maybe he got into something he wasn't supposed to. After a few days of continued vomiting and diarrhea I knew it wasn't just a bug. It took me a long time to determine that it was indeed the Beneful since he has eaten it on occasion before with no problems. The only thing that had changed in his diet was the Beneful. I opened a new bag and put some in his dish the day before his ailments started. He would vomit up only the Beneful. He would NOT vomit after eating just chicken or lean beef.
I took him to the vet and they determined he had pancreatitis due to his digestive system being wrecked. He had to spend 3 days in the clinic on IV. I picked him up and have given him only chicken and rice and he has not vomited since. It was pathetic to watch him suffer unnecessary due to this POISON that he ate! I'm so thankful he is alive and with some TLC should hopefully get back to normal but am not particularly happy with the $900.00 medical bill. I have taken some time to research this awful product and was shocked and appalled when I saw the number of other pet owners who went thru a similar experience. After two weeks of the on and off (having seizures at least once a day) a friend posted the link about Beneful dog food. I quickly stopped her on it. She immediately got better. I have now changed her dog food and she hasn't had one seizure or lethargic episode in over a week. Something is up with that food and it needs to be addressed.

I have no doubt that Beneful dog food was the cause of my dog's death. I've been doing some research and wonder if the cereal grain used in the dog food had become toxic due to improper storage. Read an interesting article that the cereal grains could become toxic under certain conditions such as high humidity, warm temperatures, etc. Maybe the cereal grains that Purina uses tested okay but somehow became toxic at a later point. Anyways, I'm thinking maybe the cereal grains are of such low quality. Whatever the case, I saw my dog suffer to the very end and I'm not taking any more chances on my next dog.

We had to have our Vet put down our 11 year old 93 lb. dog (Sno) on August 2nd, 2013 (1:30pm) as he had a cancer growth coming out of his mouth, which started about 6 months ago. Causing him to have very bad breath. Within one month of seeing the growth, we noticed that he was having a tough time moving and climbing the stairs. Mid-July, we noticed a few growths coming out around his penis area. The vet verified that we were making the right decision.
A few minutes ago, I was sent a message on my Facebook page about BENEFUL. The bag caught both my wife and my attention. We are furious. We had been buying BENEFUL at the Walmart Store in Sudbury for the past few years. The 2 pictures that I have provided were of our beloved Sno on August 2nd, 2013, an hour before I seen the message about BENEFUL on my Facebook account my wife & I were lying in bed and crying as we discussed Sno.
We had to keep his death a secret for a week, as we were taking our 5 g/children to camp for a week. On Friday, August 9th, the last day at camp, we had to tell our g/children and children about Sno. What a terrible 2 hours that was, not a dry eye in the camp. We have set up a memorial site with Sno dog tags attached to a corner of our yard fence. I will be framing a good picture of him and attaching it to the fence also. So that we can all visit with him. Sno & I visited the seniors complex over the past 4 years, as he was such a gentle giant and he brought a lot of smiles to the seniors.
If BENEFUL was the cause, why is it still being sold @ the Walmart Store in Sudbury? From some of the stories that I read on the FB article, this has been known to cause cancer for some time. Also, have we been exposed to the cancer causing products by handling Sno food on a daily basis? Please have an attorney contact me.

I have been giving my 12 year old Lhasa Beneful soft food in the plastic containers for the past year. His liver enzymes have been elevated and he is very thirsty. Last month he stopped eating and almost died. He had an ultrasound and has tumors on his liver, adrenal glands and stones in bladder. I am shocked after I read the similar symptoms other dogs have while on Beneful. I am returning all the food. I am so upset that I have been feeding my dog food that is killing him. Something must be done. This company should be investigated so no other dogs have to suffer like mine did.

In response to your concerns (which I also have because we feed our two dogs Beneful), let's look at the fact that the food is made in bulk, stored in processing facilities and distribution facilities before arriving at the stores where they are ultimately purchased. At any time during this entire process, the food can spoil. The questions that should be raised are these:
2. Is there a possibility of this product being tainted during storage?
3. How long does this product stay in storage and what are the controls that each distributor uses to safeguard the products?
4. What is the possibility that, like humans, they are having delayed reactions to this product? I know equating dogs to humans might irritate people, but I am trying to make a point. Humans can produce reactions to food items that they have been consuming for years before having a sudden and unexpected reaction. This is not an unusual occurrence.
As I have said earlier, we feed our dogs Beneful Healthy Weight dog food. Both dogs have been fine. Both have energy and play together, and with my wife and I. We have not seen any sudden weight loss, diarrhea or other symptoms as described by those whose pets have been affected. However, until Purina and the FDA decide on whether a recall is warranted or not, we are looking to find another dog food, I will not take chances with our "kids." Like all of us here, we love our pets because they are a part of the family.

My dog had been on Beneful since she was a puppy just this year in Feb she started having diarrhea and drinking a lot of water. So I took her to the vet and they said that she just had an upset stomach and had me start her on a bland diet and gave me some meds as well. This seemed to help for the first day or two then she wouldn't eat the beef in rice/chicken and rice and continued with her symptoms as before. So took her back and did blood work and they found nothing and gave me more meds. After another week she started to get worse so I took her to a new vet that found a huge tumor in her stomach just by examining her.
We did xrays and the vet was spot on, she had a tumor that was pushing her bowels to the point of discomfort to say the least. A week later I had to put her down because she just wouldn't eat or drink and I could not afford to have the surgery and there was no guarantees it would have helped. She was my best friend and I miss her every day! After all this being said my Daisy Dog was only 7 yrs old exactly she was put down on March 11th 2013. I do believe this dog food is causing tumors and would not recommend it to anyone!

My 14-year old lab/shepherd mix got really sick after eating this dog food. We'd fed it to her for several years, but this year she became lethargic and started drinking unusually large amounts of water. We thought it was just because of her age, but then she got really sick and started throwing up everything she ate. She still had an appetite for our human food but couldn't keep anything down, not even for 2 seconds. Her eyes turned yellow, she was vomiting up everything even water! We took her to the vet and got $1000 worth of tests done on her (blood work, barium study, x-rays, IV fluids, etc.). The vet couldn't figure out what was wrong either, but she managed to make it through the week.
We started feeding her soft human food by the spoonful for a few weeks to make sure she was ok and she miraculously got 100% better. But then we put her back on the dog food, and she started to get sick again... She didn't want to eat her Beneful this week which is strange because my dog will eat ANYTHING. I looked up the reviews for this food online and it turns out that since January 2013 there have been 229 cases of deaths reported because of Beneful! Horrible!! So glad my baby made it out ok. I am shocked about Beneful. I started feeding my Doberman puppy this food when he was about 6-7 months old and I really thought he was thriving on it. He did have occasional diarrhea but I never thought it could be the dog food. Then, when he was 11 months old he started having seizures. I have known his breeder, (who has been breeding beautiful, healthy Dobermans for over 30 years), for over 10 years and she assured me it was not genetic, nor was it environmental or any head trauma. As a matter of fact, this is my second Doberman from this breeder but the first one I ever fed the Beneful to.
Now, I have to ask myself, did “I” do this to my dog by feeding him Beneful? He just turned 2 years old on August 3rd and his seizures are still ongoing and a lot more frequent than my vet would like. He takes 12 pills a day and still gets them every week, sometimes every two weeks, if I'm lucky. I stopped feeding him the Beneful about a month ago, actually before I read the warnings on this product and can only hope it is not too late for him.

At this point, I figured it was behavioral because she had been having the problem for so long.
She had another accident, but this time it was on the tile in the kitchen and I could tell the color wasn't right so back to the vet we go. His attempt to find kidney stones came up empty but he could feel something. An ultrasound was the next step. Sure enough, there is a large tumor in her bladder. She was just too sick. My Border Collie, 12 at the time, did eventually recover, but he lost a lot of weight and a year later died of Myasthenia Gravis. My little terrier, 7, also eventually recovered. Both recoveries took a long time. After reading the comments of the other pet owners, I realize how blessed I was that I didn't lose all three dogs at that time. They were all eating Beneful prepared meals that came in little plastic tubs. All I could think of that may have caused this sickness in 3 healthy dogs at the same time was that they were all eating the same food.
I started visiting Susan Thixon's website, The Truth About Pet Food, and discovered the awful things that have been found in pet food, the lengths the corporations would go to to defend their actions, the inactivity of the FDA to step up and protect us consumers and our pets, and the multiple recalls of so-called "good" pet foods. Since then I make my own pet food, which is neither as difficult nor as expensive as you might think. My dogs are healthy and fit. Their yearly blood panels reveal they are in good health. They love their food and I know exactly what ingredients are in it. Please consider researching dog nutrition requirements and making your own. Her eyes were yellow and he was worried about a gallbladder blockage. He did surgery on her that day and found her kidneys covered in cancer. She never came out of surgery.
When I went to retrieve her body, I asked the doctor if he thought we had perhaps exposed her to some toxin or if he had any idea why she developed cancer. He told me he really didn't know, BUT he said I should do some research into dog food manufacturing. He said he never fed his dogs dog food. Needless to say, I did the research and I have never fed my dogs dog food again. I make it all from scratch. The vet gave us meds to help her with the vomiting but found nothing wrong with her (blood tests were not taken - vet wants to wait a week). She had stopped eating & drinking. We added chicken broth to the food to help her eat something. Still she continued to vomit. She had a high heart rate and just wasn't herself. 48 hours on the meds, she still had the vomiting. So I switched her food.
It is the first meal she has kept down in 8 days! This morning my husband and I discussed, that maybe we bought the wrong type of Beneful and that there maybe something not agreeing with her since she has only been vomiting since we opened the new bag. It was the correct type so there should have been no issues. Then I decided to see if there were any recalls on Beneful? Maybe just a bad batch? Glad I found information in several online stories from news reports, etc. Seems like several issues with this brand have caused illnesses and death.
I hope our dog recovers. Will not be giving her anymore Beneful or Purina brand foods! Disappointed that Purina has not let pet owners know about these issues. Since she has been on the food for 2 yrs, I find it hard to believe she has been ill the entire time. But, I can see some bad batches since most of these issues are recent in 2013. I posted about a week ago that my perfectly healthy dog, who's never been sick a day in his life, has gradually been wasting away losing weight and getting lethargic. Vet did blood test, which indicated high liver enzymes. Took dog off of Beneful and he was getting his shiny fur back, but it was too late. He was still lethargic, started walking with a stagger and soon his eye had a greenish discharge. This past Saturday, his hind legs gave out. We took him to the vet and the vet said nothing more we can do. So we sadly had to put him to sleep. Wish we had not changed his dog food half a year ago to Beneful. He would still be with us today. Can't understand why they still sell this stuff at the store.

This is more of an inquiry than a complaint. I need to know if there are other dog owners out there that have seriously ill dogs after giving them Beneful Delights dog treats? I have a 5-year-old Cairn terrier who has always been a healthy dog. A couple of months ago, I started buying the new dog treats and she loved them. I then noticed that she was lethargic and was bleeding from her mouth. I took her in to the animal hospital and it has been a struggle to get her back to a semi-normal state. She is being treated with immunosuppressive drugs... prednisone and Azathioprine (used for humans to help them not reject a transplanted organ). The diagnosis is ITP Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia. This condition is where the immune system is destroying platelets, which results in bleeding. Her body is attacking itself.
The doctor wanted to know if there was any rat poison around that she could have gotten into. No, not at all. I am obviously a slow learner because since she has improved only a little, I started researching the Beneful products. I don't see anyone having problems with these treats but lots of problems with the foods. Has anyone else had problems with their beloved pets getting sick after eating the Beneful Baked Delights? We are about at wits’ end. One day she seems more like herself and the next, not well again. We are afraid that once the doctor reduces her meds, we might lose her. Please write if you are having this experience. Thanks.

I live in the Cookeville area of middle Tennessee. If anyone else in this area is having issues with Beneful poisoning their babies, please call, email, or text me at any time. Time is not a problem for me as I’m unemployed and don’t work. I think we can have something done about this as I have already spoken with several lawyers. I know we can’t bring our own babies back, but we can help other pet parents. Please, we need to hit them where it hurts. That’s their pockets. Even if the money goes to charity, it will still do some good. I learned 7 years ago that Purina was sued and paid damages to the amount of just a little over $17 million. The lawsuit was over negligence, in the form of dogs getting sick and dying. That’s what the lawyer told me that helped handle the case. So please, we can do some good for others, if not for ourselves.

On Monday of last week, we noticed that our Rottie was down and not feeling herself. We thought she had a cold. As the days progressed, instead of getting better, she was getting worse. She stopped eating, drinking and wouldn't go outside unless coaxed. She was usually a healthy, energetic girl and right up until last Monday had been running around and doing all of her normal things. Once she stopped eating and drinking, and we noticed her vomit was different, more frothy and she would throw up even after taking a small sip of water, we took her to the emergency vet. Still hoping she had a cold or some infection.
After the vet ran blood tests, they came back and told us she was in kidney failure. Her toxin levels were so high, there was nothing we could do. The vet said he had never seen levels that high in the kidneys. Her organs were failing. We had to say goodbye to her on Saturday. Our sweet girl is gone and the last food she ate was Beneful. Once the doctor said it was kidney failure, I immediately thought back to the treats recalled by Purina not so long ago and the fact that they were causing kidney failure in dogs. I looked up Beneful today on Google and the first suggestion that comes up is Beneful and liver and kidney failure. Whenever our dog ate Beneful, I noticed her coat became less shiny and she had dandruff which wasn't normal.
After reading all of these stories so similar to mine, I had to speak up. Our beloved Rottie didn't have to suffer like this. We don't have children so our dogs are everything to us. If I had only known beforehand, I would never have fed this food to her! I check the FDA site regularly and Beneful is not listed because neither the company nor the FDA is taking these reports seriously. Someone needs to stop them. More people and dogs shouldn't have to suffer until they FINALLY pull this off the shelf. We can't ever bring her back but we can fight for her.

My 11-year-old dog has never been sick all his life. We changed his dog food about a year ago to Beneful. This past February, we took our dog for his annual checkup where it was noted that he lost a few pounds since his last annual. We thought nothing of it as it was just a few pounds. A couple of weeks ago, we noticed our dog looked like his ribs were starting to show and then he seemed kind of not himself. This week, his ribs are looking really pronounced so my husband took him to the vet this morning and they did blood work. We will get results tomorrow. Meanwhile, I started looking on the internet to see if anyone else's dog got sick from Beneful and I see many have. I'm almost positive it was the dog food. We immediately threw it in the garbage and got his old food back. He looks all bony now and just lies around. I hope he will recover.

A little over a month after introducing the Beneful Select to our beautiful German Shepherd's diet, she stopped eating and started drinking water all the time. She was lethargic and had a glazed look. On May 25, I went out to bring her in from her pen and she could hardly walk and she started throwing up... even the water she was drinking. Then we rushed her to emergency where she died on X-Ray the next morning. I do believe this food should be looked into. I think she was poisoned because the vet could not figure out what happened even after many blood tests and X-Rays. He wrote: Liver Failure? Poisoning? Heart? I believe this food was responsible for her death. There is no other explanation.

In July of 2012, we purchased Beneful dog food for our dogs, Dottie (Dachshund) and Masha (Jack Russell). Masha was not really eating the dog food but we thought that this might be because of the change in food. Dottie was eating it. In a few days of eating it, Dottie started to seem a little lethargic. We noticed her drinking a lot of water but really didn't think too much of it at the time. She then had a seizure and basically went into a coma-like state. Her kidneys and liver failed and her blood sugar skyrocketed. She had no control over urine or bowel movements. The poops were white. I thought she was a goner.
I had my daughter say goodbye to her as we rushed her to the Vet. The vet could not find out what was wrong specifically but treated her with several medications and was able to revive her. She was still not herself. She stayed in the animal hospital for three days. The vet bill was over $1500.00. They released her on Tuesday morning. We brought her home on plenty of antibiotics and several other medications. She seemed a little better. She was still eating the dog food. On Sunday morning, she died in my arms. I don't know for sure if it was the dog food but it seems like an awfully strange coincidence for all these dogs to have experienced the same issues. Dottie was a vibrant, healthy 8-year-old Dachshund. This was really strange.

Our 6-year-old Dalmatian began losing weight early this year. She had gotten worms from a trip to the New England woods late November, so we attributed it to that and treated that condition with our vet (she actually had two rounds of tapeworm, so we did not initially catch the actual cause of this decline). As 2013 has gone on, her weight still declined. Being an original New England dog, we then thought she was just reacting to the heat that has come on here in the South and that she would acclimate. We never dreamed we would get the diagnosis of liver damage. Once the vet found out, she had been fed Beneful (we switched to it right after Thanksgiving of 2012 thinking it was a better nutritional food than what we were buying at that point). He was adamant.
We discontinue using that brand of food and she is now being treated for the liver damage. We are praying she will recover from this and are hoping we have stopped feeding it in time for our other dogs. We spent a lot of money on this food in 6 months for our pets not knowing this would end up being the worst thing for them. Two years ago we also lost a wonderful dog to kidney failure. Sure enough, we had fed him Beneful a year or more before his death thinking it was nutritionally good for him as he started to age. We will never know if that is what caused his death, but it is quite the coincidence.

My Yorkie, Harvick, started eating Beneful last year. Out of nowhere, he started throwing up, lying around and was not himself. I took him to the vet and they did some blood work. His BUN was at 152. We took him to another vet for a second opinion and she said to go to a kidney specialist because it looks as though his kidneys are bad. The specialist sent us straight to an emergency animal hospital where he has now been for 5 days. The last vet told us that Beneful is the worst food to give to your pets. Upon doing research, I see many others whose dogs had kidney problems. It turns out our dog now has kidney failure. His levels are coming down after having IV fluids. He now needs a feeding tube and a special diet. I just hope we can have him around for a long time. That is something we will never be able to know. If there was a way for me to get back at Beneful, I would. There needs to be a class action lawsuit and this food needs to be off the market!

We had two dogs about nine years old. On November 25, 2012 we bought a bag of health weight because both dogs were getting heavy. Started them on it around the end of December. The outside dog would stay in the garage at night. She started peeing everywhere and quiet eating the dog food. Bloody stools and bloody vomit. The inside dog started doing the same thing - peeing everywhere and vomiting. Took her to the vet for kidney failure. We left her there for the weekend at a cost close to $1,000. Brought her home and she would not eat or drink. She kept throwing up a brownish liquid and bloody stool. She died the next weekend.
Outside dog got worse. Trip to the vet, medicine and a different food. She only got worse. She died in the early morning The vet did an autopsy and collected tissue samples. Liver was white and the stomach was full of clotted blood. A&M University felt that the dogs had gotten a hold of a dogwood with aflatoxin in it. Would it help to write Purina this question I have not answered? Before the food change, the outside dog was playing with the grandkids and the inside dog was interacting with the grandkids also.

It's clear she has a gut ache and will strain to poop although it's runny. My first thought was Parvo until I researched Beneful and all the issues other dogs are having with the same problem. I am going to switch foods for all my dogs immediately and take my puppy to the vet for evaluation. I will keep the bag of Beneful in the event it's proven to be bad. Thankfully, my puppy uses training pads, so I can keep some of the red, runny poop for the vet to test.

I had been feeding my 9-year-old Rat Terrier (Trixie) Beneful wet food in the plastic containers for about 3 months. On Memorial Day, I opened a new container of Beneful Chicken Stew and fed it to her. Several hours later, she became violently ill, vomiting constantly for over an hour. Her stomach swelled, she became so weak she couldn't stand and she was unable to control her bladder. She was unable to drink even a small amount of water without vomiting. She laid on the couch where I placed her, shivering and moaning, with her mouth half open and her eyes glazed. Blood tests showed that her liver enzymes are 4 times higher than normal, her platelets are 1/8 of what they should be and she has pancreatitis. If she hadn't been so healthy and sturdy prior to this event, she would have died that day, without a doubt. At this point, we have no idea if she will have permanent damage to her liver and pancreas. The vet bills are mounting.
Right away I was convinced that she was poisoned from the food, and I threw the container as well as all of the unopened ones away. Upon searching the internet a few days later, I found that many other people's pets have had the same symptoms after eating Beneful food. I think it is very important that everyone is told of this problem, and that the company take action. We count on them to provide safe food for our pets, whom we all love like family, and it is disgraceful that this problem is being ignored.

We picked her up and brought her home. We knew she wasn't acting like her normal self. She was more docile and refused to eat. I started her on a diet of rice which she did eat a small amount of. The next day, my husband called me at work and said the dog was bleeding. I figured she cut her paw or something and found she was bleeding from her rectum! She was no longer lethargic, so we kept a close yet on her.
She usually eats canned food. But the day this began, she ate some Beneful along with the dry. Even with a small amount, she got that sick. I think we would have lost her had she eaten more. Oh, and she had eye drainage which she has never had before. A day or two later, our Golden developed vomiting and diarrhea as well. We stopped the food since her appetite was also poor. She too, fortunately recovered. Then my daughter’s dog had been here to play and had mixed Beneful with canned food. The next day, she has all the symptoms including the bloody stools. I started to give her Beneful dinners in the little plastic containers at the beginning of May 2013. She also ate Beneful Healthy Radiance dry food as well. Phoebe was going in for a dental cleaning at the vet and on her pre-op blood work, the vet found her kidneys to be in trouble. They were not going to be able to clean her teeth because she could not have anesthesia. The vet kept her and started her on IV fluids and IV Ampicillin to flush her kidneys and treat for possible infection. She was hospitalized for 4 days.
Her levels started out at BUN 155, Phosphorus 8.3 and Creatinine 3.3. After having the IV for 4 days, her levels went down to BUN 66, Phosphorus 5.1 and Creatinine 2.6. She was discharged to come home. I brought her back 6 days later to have her blood rechecked to see how her levels were doing. She was changed to Hills Science Diet food and had no more Beneful since before she was hospitalized. Phoebe is only 9 pounds and only goes outside to go to the bathroom, and I bring her right back in. There is nothing that she could have gotten into. The only thing different was that I gave her the Beneful dinners and whatever was in there caused insult to her kidneys and put her into Acute Renal Failure.
Her levels are now BUN 125, Phosphorus 12 and Creatinine 4.1. The vet said that her kidneys are not treatable and if she was a human, she would be on dialysis and looking for a kidney transplant. I am completely devastated! My vet told me that she has 2 weeks at most to live! I bottle fed Phoebe since she was 5 days old. Her mama had mastitis (inflammation of the breast) and was not able to nurse her or the entire litter of 4 pups. I hand raised all 4 of them. She did a blood workup and found it to be normal. I was concerned that the Beneful was the cause of the tremors, but after researching, not finding tremors as a symptom, I wasn't sure. After a couple more days though, Yankee began vomiting and refusing to eat. We tried getting him to eat boiled chicken breast and brown rice, but he refused. Our vet gave him IV fluids yesterday and again today since he was still vomiting the yellow bile. She also treated him with some medicine to prevent the vomiting. Tonight we tried to get him to eat some canned dog food that we got from the clinic called Prescription i/d, but he refused it...
Just about an hour ago, he finally was willing to eat about 5 tablespoons off of my fingers. We are so thankful for this and are asking the Lord to continue healing his body. Sounds like someone needs to file a class action suit on behalf of all the loss related to this dog food if that is the only way that they will take it off the market.

Last Thursday he developed a twitch muscle spasms. We called the emergency vet & they wanted to see him.
While filling out the paperwork, I looked on the Internet for the proper name & variety of the food Sully was switched to as the form asked what food he ate. I was appalled at what popped up. So many complaints. Symptoms like Sully’s. We waited around for almost an hour to see the vet when I decided we would just take a chance that it was the food. The next morning I grilled a chicken breast & Sully ate it. I went out & bought the expensive natural food. After a couple days of pooping & puking, he got back some energy. Prior to this he never refused his dinner and barely chewed his food. Just swallowing it. I took him to the vet and all tests came back normal, so the vet put him on seizure meds. But Buster didn't last more than a week after that. He was only seven and was a very active Boston Terrier until I fed him Beneful. After doing some research, we found out that her signs of not eating, vomiting, very thirsty, dehydration, and the order in which it all happens are on point with other dog owners, who have also been feeding their dogs the same food.
Why has there not been a recall on this already? How many dogs have to die before someone does something about it? Some type of investigation should be taking place and it should start with the main common factor in this equation. Pet owners, be aware! Do some research on what you feed your pets. Well a couple of weeks ago, I purchased a new bag of Beneful at Wal-Mart. I normally get the orange one since she seems to like that one better. However, this time, I purchased the purple Playful Life product. This morning, my son informed me that Luckie would not get up, wasn't eating her food or being her normal overly active self. She is a very hyper and excited dog. She loves to be petted and get hugs, so when there is a drastic change in her behavior like that, we are extremely concerned.
When I checked her, she would not get up, would not eat and we had to urge her to drink her water. She would not lick us, jump on us, or even roll over to have her tummy rubbed. Her feces were like black tar like consistency and when moving it, there was a yellow sticky type substance (the shade of the yellow nuggets in the Beneful). My thoughts are maybe it is not the whole Beneful line but possibly the type (Playful Life) for instance that may be the problem. I pray that she will recover from this; however, I will no longer be purchasing Beneful until I am confident this problem is solved. I may just not purchase any Purina brand just to be safe. Please look into problem so no other family member will need to be hurt.

Months ago, I switched my dog to Beneful gradually as I have been instructed to do by my vet regarding changing foods for my dog. After a short while, she started vomiting discolored water and small bits of dog food. I had a vet visit and explained the situation. The vet said it was probably a bug but to watch her. I took her off the Beneful and began feeding her a food that is not made by Purina. She had no more episodes of sickness. I decided to try the Beneful one more time because the cost of the other food is outrageous. Again, I gradually changed the food and not even a week after she began eating just the Beneful Healthy Radiance, she began throwing up discolored water again, moving slowly, sleeping significantly more throughout the day, etc.
I contacted Purina and received a "Sorry, your dog was ill but we would like to give you some information on our product" phone call. I'm keeping the bag and lodging a complaint with the FDA. If you don't lodge a formal complaint with the FDA, they can't do anything. They have only received a few formal complaints about Beneful. If you have a legitimate complaint, please visit their website and put the information regarding your situation in the hands of people who can do something about it!

I was feeding my Chihuahua, Spike, Pedigree canned dog food for about eight years and then decided to feed him a little dry food. I picked Beneful because I heard it was healthy. Spike started to cough a little, but I thought he just had an allergy. He started getting loose stools and pooping on the rug. He then started throwing up once in awhile. I took him to the vet, and he gave him medicine. Spike didn't get better and just kept getting worse. He was always drinking water like he couldn't get enough to drink. He didn't want to get up and play. He just wanted to sleep all the time. I took him to the vet again and left him there until I was finished working.
The vet said his heart was so swollen that it was pushing against his esophagus. His kidneys and some other parts were not working well. He had to be put to sleep. Weeks later, I heard Beneful dog food could be killing dogs. I'm writing this now in the hope they find out if it's true. If I ever get another dog, I will never feed him Beneful. I will check to see if anyone I know is feeding their dog Beneful, and tell them to check and see if there is any more information on Beneful to see if it was the cause of many dogs’ deaths. My heart still hurts for my Spike.

I have fed our (2) Border Collies (litter-mates, two 1/2 years old) and our mixed breed (14 years old) Beneful Dog Food for the last 2.5 years. They have been given a variety of the different flavors. I purchased a bag of the Playful variety one week ago. Last night, the Collies were having a hard time bedding down in their kennels. I had to put them outside. When I went out this morning, they had vomited piles of grass and dog food. I noticed that they refused to eat the dog food that was placed in their dishes. Our older mixed breed does not want to eat her food either. She eats everything! Not wanting anything to do with this dog food at all. Our chickens (scavengers) won’t touch it either. Something is really wrong with this dog food.

My dog has lumps showing up on her ultrasound; her outlook is guarded. She ate Beneful for 8 years and was fine. Then she started to vomit, and it did not stop. I spent time and money and she is just not the same. I talked to someone at Purina and they had someone call me back. The man was downright rude. When I stopped feeding her the dog food, her enzymes went down almost 70 percent; they were at 400+. It seems to me to be simple - the dog food made her sick. For everyone out there, if your dog vomits after eating Beneful, take the food away and watch your dog (they tend to eat their vomit); you may not know they are sick. Prayers for all the dogs who are gone.

My 3-year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Penny Lane, died 2 weeks after I switched her dog food to Beneful dry dog food. She was a happy, healthy and active dog. She had no medical conditions. We do not feed her table scraps and lock up our garbage so she can't get into it. We do not keep antifreeze or chocolate in the house. We have a fence in the backyard and monitor her when she goes out. We keep her in a kennel when we are not at home. There is no way she could have gotten into anything she shouldn't have.
I left for work Wednesday morning and she appeared to be a healthy dog. She had been playful that morning and ate normally. I came home after work and noticed she had an accident in her kennel which never happens. I let her out and she could barely move. She struggled to go up the steps and I let her outside. She started vomiting and had diarrhea every few minutes. I called our vet immediately and took her in for an emergency appointment. The vet performed a fecal exam and ruled out parasites and worms. Her temperature was normal. He did a rectal exam and found nothing wrong. He felt her organs and checked for bloat and she felt normal.
The vet administered fluids to keep her hydrated and gave her medication to ease her stomach and antibiotics and said to bring her back if she wasn't better in 24 hours. I took her home and stayed up monitoring her but fell asleep around 4am. I woke up 2 hours later and she was gone. She was up to date on all her shots and passed her last annual exam with flying colors. The vet says he is not sure what happened. But her symptoms appeared like she got into something she shouldn't have, and it caused her system to fail. This dog never left my side, and I always monitored her very closely. She could not have gotten into anything. I switched my healthy dog to Beneful that was purchased at Walmart, and she died 2 weeks later.

The next morning, we awoke to learn that she passed sometime that night. I started researching what could have caused such a tragic loss to an otherwise healthy dog and came across this website (as well as many others). I am disgusted and sick to see that nearly 600 different cases have been presented here and nothing has been done. I believe that our family dog lost her life because of this. This time she is passing blood and her stool looks jelly like. She has been lethargic, off her feet and just pitiful. We are about to lose our wonderful dog as he is in a serious condition with his organs shutting down. I contacted Purina Co. and they backed their product, but I don't believe a word they said. I think they need to issue a recall! I will never again buy Purina products! If you are feeding your dog this food, I would stop immediately and throw it away! This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to document a consumer complaint. I have an adopted B&T Coonhound. This dog is beautiful, healthy, energetic three-year-old. He is essentially a tank and he loves food! He annihilates his food in seconds, licks his bowl and then checks several times just to make sure something isn't wrong. I noticed over the course of 3 weeks some strange behavior. It began with grass eating (all dogs do this right?) then lethargy, loose stools, then occasional vomiting. The change was slight, but progressive.
Strangely, he had significant conjunctivitis every morning, but this coincided with our usually heavy pollen season (just seasonal allergies right?). Then one morning, he had enough. It took a few bites and left the food. Sadly, this was the first time I thought he is really sick and needs to go to the vet. It was on a weekend and we planned to take him Monday. He vomited again that day. That same day, he had an anaphylactic reaction and his entire head swelled liked a basketball. I pumped him full of Benadryl, monitored his airway and the symptoms completely resolved less than 24 hours. I gave him some plain chicken and rice (he loved it) and threw out the Beneful Healthy Radiance.
The following day, we started him on a small Rachael Ray Nutrish, just six as a test. Funny thing happened. Over the next three days, no more conjunctivitis (none), solid stools and his energy has almost returned to normal levels. As I started to think about his symptoms, they truly coincided with the timing of one large bag of food. I understand the eagerness to blame sickness and disease can sway judgement, but let me give you a suggestion. If you are experiencing a similar problem, dump the Beneful and get your healthy dog back.

I thought that it smelled way stronger than it normally does. I keep it in the same lid plastic, thick plastic container and it smells way stronger than it normally has. Please get it checked out. I will save my current food and start them on wet food until this gets taken care of. Please look into it as my dogs are house dogs. My father's 5-lb. Chihuahua, Squirt, became sick after just a few days of being changed to this food. He became sick with symptoms of vomiting, drinking large amounts of water more than normal, laying around fatigued and no energy, and then began not having an appetite, laying quite lifeless. So my father took the dog to the vet on Saturday, April 13, 2013. The vet determined the dog was very dehydrated and had a bacterial infection and that his teeth appeared to be rotting out.
The vet had asked my father what other symptoms the dog was experiencing and they disclosed the same symptoms that were in relations to other clients and their dogs' symptoms which had been seen in her office that became sick after eating the Purina Beneful product Healthy Weight. Yet they stressed that no recalls at the time had been issued, but numerous people had brought their dogs in with the same symptoms as displayed in my father's dog, that reported sickness and lifelessness. After her examination, she gave the dog fluids, antibiotics and a pain medication.
The Vet stressed that there were no recalls on the dog food but it was around the border. My sister was very worried because her little dog was on it as well. The vet suggested she remove her dog off the food and place her on something else. The dog had not shown any improvements at all over the weekend. If anything, the symptoms worsened. By Monday, he was scheduled for a follow-up on his teeth to have dental surgery for repair to his teeth. However, they did a blood draw and found the little dog was in kidney failure, and the vet could not do the dental work. Anesthesia would worsen and affect the dog's kidney failure.
So she showed a diagram of the dog's two kidneys, completely marking through one kidney which was not working at all, and the second kidney made a small mark accounting for 1/4 of the dog's kidney still working. The vet explained there was not much she could do for the dog at this point, but stated we could hospitalize the dog and keep him on fluids round the clock to force fluids. However, her own gut instincts, she indicated, she did not believe the dog would recover from this. It would cost in the range of $600-$1000 to try IV fluids. She would not nor could she give any guarantee towards the outcome on the dog's recovery or that the dog would survive. She just stressed to try and get the dog to eat and that if he did not make any improvements, they could bring him back in and put the dog to sleep.
On Monday night, the dog still had not eaten and had refused even water. My dad had tried to feed water and chicken broth through a syringe. The dog became increasingly shaky and weaker; he did show slight changes in improvement over Monday night. Furthermore, the dog was scheduled to see his vet on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 because at this moment my dad was ready to have the dog put to sleep on this day. So my sister went with him for support. Upon talking to the vet, she ignored my father bringing up the issue of having the dog put down. She went on to discuss options of IV fluids, administer liquid pain medications, and a pill form of Enalapril which is given to dogs who experience heart conditions, in which this would dilate the blood vessels to increase blood flow to the only kidney he had functioning, in order to get the maximum function out of that kidney, put him on quick-start liquid diet for his nutrition, the dog was not put to sleep at this time.
After speaking to the vet, my father thought possibly there was some positive to come of this. He took the dog home; the dog continued not having the ability to eat or drink and later this evening and overnight had developed diarrhea. On April 17, 2013, when the dog was taken outside to the bathroom, the dog's stool was bloody, so my sister called the vet back and asked what more could be done now for the dog, because now his stools were blood. She asked my dad to retrieve a stool sample so they could test it to see the relationship of the previous symptoms or if there was something new developing.
My father took a sample in before close at 5 pm and the vet did not express any concerns about bloody stool, but did place the dog on a chocolate type of medication for bloody stools, and stated that in about 3-4 hours, he should start showing signs of feeling some better. This did nothing for the dog! The dog continued to have bloody diarrhea. My father had contacted my sister expressing his concerns on Thursday, April 18, 2013 night. He was not sure the dog would even make it till morning. My sister asked, "Why? What's going on?" My father said that Squirt could not even get up to go use bathroom and the dog was going on himself. On this night, my father was so concerned about the dog. He said the dog had awakened him by a thud and the little dog had fallen out of his bed due to weakness, not able to even walk. So my father cleaned him up, placed him back into his bed.
My sister had called the vet to inquire about putting the dog down so he was no longer suffering so an appointment was scheduled to put the dog down on Friday, April 19, 2013 and that morning, my sister had to call to make sure Dad was up for the appointment for the dog, and my dad expressed to my sister that he wasn't sure the little dog was even alive after how he'd found him early morning and so he got up and went to check on the dog and the little dog had passed away between 3:30 am and 9:30 am. So this has been a terrible loss for our father's pet and it's devastating for all of us. We are raising awareness to this issue taking the lives of our pets and trying to save you of your loss.
Please, do not call to complain to Purina but on their website under Contact Us, there is a typing box where you can submit a question and all your information. Report your bag of food and fill that information! The two vets we had Squirt at for treatment both suggested we file complaints with FDA and Purina. Let's try and get these products recalled and save our fur-babies' lives! Also in 2004-2005, was under the gun, Waggin Train, Cannon Creek ranch brand dog treats (chicken jerky products) both brands! Their product has been on recall since 2008. Yet, still they are selling them in stores today! So, pet owners beware!

We have two yorkies, one who is five years old this year and the other which is 6 months old. Our five-year old has never had health problems and we have fed her Purina then Beneful for her entire life, until recently. We feed both dogs the little bites and literally a week ago, my oldest Maddie got sick. She began throwing up in the middle of the night. We figured she had gotten into something and she seemed to get back to normal. The next day, my husband and I flew out for a business trip, and by Tuesday morning, we received some distressing news from my parents, who the puppies were staying with. Maddie had extreme diarrhea and vomiting and was shaking violently. They took her to our vet who could not determine the cause but put her in IV and antibiotics. They kept her for two days and she appeared to be improving, so my mom brought her home with prescriptions for antibiotics and pain.
My mom called on Thursday to say that Maddie was still really lethargic and refusing to eat, and being that my vet was out of the office at a conference, they took her to their vet. He ran tests and put her back on an IV and as of yesterday afternoon, we had news that her liver was enlarged. She has developed bruising as if she's bleeding and she is still refusing food. Even when offered peanut butter, chicken or any of the things she would go bat crazy over before, she won't even touch them. The vet told us yesterday that he was not optimistic that she would even last the night. As of this morning, she is still fighting, thank God, but her condition has worsened a bit. The vet says that her kidneys and liver are not functioning and at this time, she is extremely critical but we'll take it day by day.
I'm still out of the state on my business trip and I'm praying we don't lose her before we can get home to see her. He has put her on steroid and medication to line her intestines in an attempt to help her body heal. Right now, we're working on prayers that she will fight and through treatment of her symptoms that she will fight long enough that her little body can heal. At this time, I think class action may need to be considered against Beneful. I'm keeping this food and I'm going to have it tested. The only way a company will be spurred to action is if we hit them where it hurts!

On Wednesday (April 24, 2013), I woke up and his face was completely swollen with his front legs and belly covered in hives. He was also having some difficulty breathing. Being a nurse, I panicked and took him to the vet immediately. They gave him a shot of Benadryl and a corticosteroid which greatly decreased the hives. I fed him his normal amount of dog food that evening and everything was okay until about 6:30 Thursday morning, at which time, he began vomiting massive quantities of undigested food. Thinking it was just a side effect of his meds, I let it be and gave him some rice mixed with the Beneful food to help settle his tummy.
Two hours later, that was thrown up as well. In a period of about 24 hours, my poor Harvey dog threw up six times! He lost almost 3 pounds over the course of two days and the hives were back. So Friday I took him to the vet again after making him fast for about 12 hours. Interestingly, he had no vomiting during the fasting period. The vet suggested I try a sensitive-tummy formula and switch brands. I switched to Pedigree's sensitive tummy formula yesterday and he hasn't vomited once. His hives are almost completely gone and he is acting like his usual self. What on earth is in this food that made him so sick? She spent the morning moving only a few feet and then lying down again. By 9:30 am, it was clear to me my dog was dying. I called an in home euthanasia service to come and take a look to at Catherine to see if I was on the right track. Within twenty minutes of that call and before anyone could arrive, she was dead on my floor.
When the vet arrived, she said it was clear to her that my dog had been poisoned. She asked if I had any mouse bait traps or antifreeze that Catherine could have gotten in to. I told her this was absurd. Catherine only ate dog food and occasional table scraps from my six-year old. She asked if I was sure. I have owned my house for ten years and know what is available. I have no poison available for my dog or my six-year old to get. The vet said it must have been a stroke then if no poison is available. I wanted to believe my dog died quickly of natural causes but something drove me to do an internet search.
I went to Google and typed in "dog food k" and dog food killing dogs popped up. I opened the page and read a few accounts of pet owners feeding their pets Beneful. He was on this for about a month, and we have since put him back to his regular food. We have noticed in the last 4-5 weeks he won’t eat as much, and drinks tons of water, lost weight, and has no energy; eyes are very glassy. He urinates and has bowel movements in the house now! I have read up on this dog food after hearing of other dogs getting sick and dying from eating dog food. My dog has the same symptoms these other dogs had! Why is this dog food still available on shelves? Shouldn't it be pulled and tested to see if this was the reason these dogs are getting sick? On Wednesday, April 17th at 6:30 am, my 8-year old Dachshund died. Earlier on April 7th, I bought a new bag of Beneful playful life brand dog food. She has eaten this brand for years. Two days after starting the new bag of food, she became very lethargic and refused to eat. I brought her to the Vet, who could not figure out what was wrong, even after a slew of blood tests and full exam. The Vet suspected possible chocolate poison at first, as Easter just passed and she got (stole) one small M&M. He treated her accordingly with medicine and an IV fluid. Over the next few days, her lethargy got worse. She refused to eat, was extremely thirsty and could not even lift her head up. More Vet visits and she started to show some improvement. She lost 6 of her 15 lbs. She started to throw up and get diarrhea. She began to urinate on herself.
On her final hours, she was having extreme breathing difficulty and heart palpitations, followed by a massive seizure/hemorrhage with blood pouring out of her mouth and nose which killed her. She was a perfectly healthy dog until this new bag of Beneful dog food. It wasn't until a few days after she died that we learned of over 500 deaths caused by the same food. Purina (maker of Beneful) has done nothing but give me runaround and told me the FDA tested their food and found absolutely no issues. The operator was obviously reading from a script and seemed very insincere. She said they would have a claims department call me in 72 hours to do an investigation and possibly reimburse my Vet bills. What about pain and suffering of my family as well as my dog? For crying out loud, my 15-year old stepdaughter was traumatized when she witnessed this sickness/death. Will that bring my dog back? I think not. There is no recall of this food yet. Shame on Purina Beneful.

I put her back on the Purina and she started getting sick again. My son decided to check the internet to see if her food was being recalled or something. I could not believe all of the bad things that were being said about the dog food.
Vet said that's probably what made her sick. He had seen similar cases involving the same food. Now our dog is very ill. Her liver count is alarmingly high. So far, we've spent over $300 and we are not done. We will pay anything to make our baby well again. Tomorrow, she will be subjected to an ultrasound. I cannot believe Purina could hear all these stories and do nothing about it. Do they not care? We are all very upset and would like to take some action. Daisy is a very important part of our family. Our son has medical/psychological issues and she is his best friend.

My 10-yr-old Shih Tzu, Doby, was eating Beneful in December when he started having seizures. I took him to the Vet and blood tests were done. His liver enzymes were in the 1000s instead of 100s. He was prescribed Phenobarbital and I put him on rice and broccoli. I took him back a month later and more blood tests were done. The liver enzymes were much lower but his thyroid was low. Over the next two months, I had Doby at the vet almost weekly. X-ray showed a shadow in the abdomen near the liver but it was not conclusive. Ultrasound was done showed just a thickening of the abdominal wall. By this time, he was bleeding internally and he was vomiting daily. The damage was done; he no longer ate but still vomited daily. My beloved Doby passed away on April 14. My rescue org. then told me about the Beneful issue. I researched and found posts about their pets having liver issues after Beneful. Please! What can be done to get this poison off the shelves?

About a month ago, my 8-year-old English Springer Spaniel started vomiting, had diarrhea, wouldn't eat, and was very lethargic. After a few days, I took her to the vet. They examined her, took blood and stool samples and sent her home with me. At that point, she was still lethargic but not vomiting. In the time since then, I got a new Springer Spaniel puppy, which had been in e-planning stages for some time. In the two weeks I've had the puppy, my older Springer has failed to engage with the puppy, something she has always done with the puppies I've had visit my home in the last two years. It occurred to me that there was this issue with Beneful food of being suspected of causing illness and lethargy in dogs, I thought I would stop the Beneful and see what happened. After one day, my girl was her old self, romping with the puppy and being the affectionate big sister she is capable of being. How can I think it was nothing other than the food I was serving my girl? Beneful should be ashamed for denying any responsibility.

My dog usually eats Beneful and has had no issues. Sunday I bought him a new bag. Monday he had diarrhea all over the place, was lethargic, warm in his axillary regions and was drinking water like crazy. I contacted Purina and spoke to them at length. They expressed concern, but continued to insist their product had nothing to do with his issue. I've spoken to my vet and will be taking my dog in this evening for blood work. Fortunately, the dog is healthy and relatively young, but now I look back to last week when my cat (who also eats a Purina product) was vomiting. She's much older and occasionally does vomit for no apparent reason. Now I wonder if her food is off too. I'm posting this from Central Virginia and I am hopeful whatever is going on with my dog is reversible at this point. Good luck to any other owners experiencing these same issues.

I visited my sister in Georgia at Christmas in 2012 and ran out of my dog's food that he has eaten for 5 years now, so I gave him the Beneful crap food my sister fed her dog. He gobbled it up like crazy and he had just recovered from a case of pneumonia. Seeing he was 12 1/2, I accepted the pneumonia from old age but antibiotics worked and he had pretty much recovered from it. I came back to my sister's after being gone for a few hours and he had thrown up everywhere and could barely move and this was after only three feeding times of the food. I figured it was the food knowing it's not good to change his food and his tummy gets upset like all dogs. I rushed out to vet near us to buy his Hills ID that he normally eats. Then I give his food and he didn't want to eat it, so I mixed it and he ate it.
Now keep in mind, I'm thinking his tummy just got upset because I changed his food but he seemed to love it so I felt bad seeing he's older and his regular food was so bland and he had just gotten better after being sick for about a month with pneumonia. I felt I was giving him a treat actually because he gobbled it up. So I got back home to Florida and he started acting very lethargic and farting a horrible smell, so I decided to throw it out on my own and did not feed it to him anymore. He would not eat his real food for one whole day until late at night and he finally ate it, but he seemed to be getting worse and could barely walk and would not get up to go pee or poop without me forcing him. He also seemed he was in pain when pooping and peeing. I took him to vet and she said the pneumonia got the best of him and he was too old for extensive procedures and that he would most likely die from going on anesthesia. She said he has lived a long life for an Akita and I needed to let go of him.
I was in shock seeing he had gotten over pneumonia and was doing much better, walking and barking and wanting to eat, but she said two months were a year to him and this is just how it happens. I took him home and just could not understand all this at all then he passed on January 16 this year. And after reading about Beneful, I just know it was this crap food. He had a weak immune system so it affected him with death obviously he had kidney failure and liver failure. Boy, do I wish I had had an autopsy to see if there was arsenic in his system. After reading about this crap, I am so upset and I was just finally accepting his death until yesterday after reading all this information about his dog food. I cannot believe that they will not take it off the shelf, but I guess they are scared of a huge lawsuit, but if there have been over 300 complaints, I do not understand.
I am going to call them tomorrow and if I have to, I will drive directly to the plant where the food is made or get in touch with VP. I am getting more upset with every hour that does by today. He was my life!!! I loved him so much! He was just like a child and was very healthy until this besides the pneumonia. He had even gotten a good check on liver, kidneys, etc before the pneumonia. I just know the food killed him. They will be hearing from me and you all will probably!!! I owe it to my big boy! Scumbags!

If he dies, I will be getting a lawyer and suing you for emotional trauma and distress. He is my baby! People love their animals and for a big corporation who cares about nothing but money, you could care less about how that affects them when their pets die because you wanted to save a buck or two on how you make your foods. Ugh! You put a chemical in your food that goes into antifreeze too!

We started feeding our American Bulldog Beneful Healthy Radiance in December 2012. She was 7 years old at the time. She went to the vet for a wellness check in December and she was fine. There was nothing wrong with her! She started showing symptoms the end of March 2013 - lethargy, occasional vomiting, etc. Then right before Easter 2013, she started drinking a lot of water and wouldn't eat. We took her to the vet and she was checked. She showed signs of tenderness in her abdomen. After an x-ray was done, it was determined that she had a large mass in her abdomen with internal bleeding. To our shock, there was nothing we could do for our beloved Lucy but to put her to sleep.
This was a heart wrenching decision, but the vet said there was nothing we could do. We were told about Beneful killing dogs all over the United States. We are convinced that she died because she had eaten Beneful for the past several months as she was very healthy prior to this. If you read this, please stop using Beneful and have your dog checked. We don't want any other families to lose a loving family member!

Just the facts: My dog started to throw up every time she eats Beneful. I have fed her this food since day one. She started to refuse the food. Smart dog, maybe an uninformed owner. Most of the comments I found helpful were the ones with the same symptoms. I took her to the vet and the blood tests came back with elevated liver enzymes. I have been to the vet twice. I put her dog food and dish up and started to feed her chicken and rice. It seems like the other vets are sharing the same remedy. She has not yet had any medication for this illness. The vet did ask what meds she was on.
So after a few days of chicken and rice, I requested a new blood test and the enzymes were down by 100 points. At that point, I was pretty sure it was the food; all the treats are the same brand. Today, we went to the city and spent the day with testing and more blood work. For some people, I see they wound up with cysts or passed on (so sorry). I still have my baby and am wondering if anyone had their food tested. I know Purina wanted my bag back but it is not expired. The vet has made mention of some mold spores in corn due to the drought.
I do not want to accuse peeps of poisoning my pet without the facts but the high enzymes seem to be a common thread. I have not sent my bag back to the mfg. I am wondering how to get someone to give me the truth. Has anyone had their dog food tested by someone other than the manufacturer? And I heard something about a memo that went out to all vets. But the link is broken.

Almost all other Purina products display it, and I was told it is not available online. I checked again locally and couldn't locate where they meant. Has anyone else found it on a package?

Just this week, our beloved Sheltie was diagnosed with bladder cancer. We have never fed him anything since he got off puppy chow, except Beneful. He has never had table scraps and wet dog food or a bone in his life. I was advised by a vet many years ago that none of these things were good for dogs and took the advice to heart. I fed him Beneful because I thought I was doing the right thing. He has been given about 6 months to live because he not only is not a candidate for surgery, but we don't have the five to six thousand dollars it would cost for surgery. But then he would have to undergo chemo and I refuse to put him through that. I saw what it did to my 26-year-old son who was 6'6" and weighed 200 pounds. I am not about to put a 25 pound dog through that.
We changed his food immediately of course and received his medication in the mail today. We will give him all our love and care until the time comes that we know he is suffering, and then we will put him down. But we will never again buy a Purina product.

I took her to the vet and she was misdiagnosed. A couple weeks after that, I took her to another vet and they did blood work and found out she had kidney failure. We watched this little dog suffer in front of us, and we were helpless. At the ripe age of 3 years old, we had to put the best dog ever down, which ripped 4 people’s hearts apart! Since the bag of dog food was fairly new, I gave the rest to my best friend for her dog. Phoebe started throwing up each time she would eat it, and thankfully my friend threw the rest away... hopefully in time! Actually, in retrospect... This thing was there in one day and the dog did not hurt herself. I now believe that the dog food is the problem. I spent the past 2 weeks with my elderly parents in Florida. During that time, we took their 5-1/2-year-old Collie for daily walks along the beach and he was happy and healthy, having had a complete checkup prior to flying from Michigan to Florida in early February. My mother feeds Rusty cooked ground beef on a bed of Purina Beneful twice a day. Often times, he will just eat the meat and leave the dry dog food but he does eat both when he is really hungry. I did notice him finishing his plate of food more often the 2 weeks I was visiting.
On March 21st, he started vomiting and the next day, he had diarrhea. We thought he must have the flu and we were happy to see he was drinking a lot of water by the 3rd day. He was, in fact, excessively thirsty but we were glad to see he was getting hydration and had decided to take him to the vet the next day if he did not improve. That evening, our otherwise healthy 5-year-old Collie died in his sleep! We could not figure out what could have happened and even took him to the vet for another opinion. She never questioned what we fed Rusty and said she really did not know what could have killed him.
This has been incredibly difficult for my mother. Rusty was her best friend and constant companion and she is having a very hard time coming to grips with his loss. Yesterday, I saw a piece on the news of how other dogs have gotten sick and even died after eating Purina Beneful. I have researched this information and am amazed to find so many other cases of dogs dying after eating Purina Beneful. I cannot believe that Purina has not recalled this batch of Beneful to let others know of the potential harmful and deadly effects of their dog food.
I am writing this to beg the FDA and Purina to alert the public so other families will not have to go through the heartache we and many others, are experiencing after losing a beloved family pet, and member of our family.

I read the label and knew not to even buy this product. I consider it to be the worst on the market. Are the contents the worst? No, they're about the same as other low-level pet food. What makes it worse is that they have put all their money into advertising this low-value food, making people think it is so good, to increase sales. What if they had actually put that money into the actual product? As a consumer, I am offended by the total lack of ethics and I diligently work to avoid using any pet products made by this company and actively educate others on why they should consider avoiding them as well.
Now, it appears they are also causing serious injury and death according to many consumers. When that many people are saying it is happening, chances are something is wrong. How soon we forget the melamine poisoning of pet food made in China, just a few years ago. The companies involved back then also said there was no problem. Of course they had to say that. Do not wait for them to accept responsibility - stop using Beneful!

I took her to a 2nd vet for a 2nd opinion and there were more antibiotics and cough pills. This has been going on for over 10 months now. Shortly after she first got sick, I thought of what had changed and I wondered if the dog food had anything to do with it, so I stopped feeding it to her.
I still have 3 dinners in my cabinet that I refuse to feed her! Little did I know about how this food was killing and making dogs sick at that time. I just recently heard about it and it all makes sense now! That was 10 months of being sick and depressed; watching her was breaking my heart but I couldn't give up on her because I love her so. Unfortunately, he had way more symptoms. He refused to eat for several days, trembled, couldn't hold in urine, vomiting, and no energy. He couldn't stand up. I got antibiotics at the beginning of his illness from the Humane Society. I had to pry them in. He did recover, somewhat. He still has symptoms that never went away like major thirst and his urine doesn't come out right (drippy).
I then heard about Beneful. Unfortunately, my dog was eating Beneful during that time. I had a coupon and decided to give it a try. My dog isn't picky. It’s the worst thing I ever did. At that time, I did take him to a vet. He has very high liver counts and blood in his urine. They did many tests for the urine. No stones and it's not UTI. We're going to get a sonogram this weekend. These dogs are in separate areas so the only thing they have in common is the Beneful. All 3 of my dogs have not been wanting to eat it either as we have been finding the bowls still full in the evening from the night before. Yet they are crying for anything else to eat as if they were hungry but did not want to eat any of that.
Once I saw an article in Atlanta paper, I went out and saw all the posts about dogs dying from Beneful. I took my new bag back to the store and purchased something else. Now, I am also concerned about the Purina products my cats are eating. I feel as if Purina is not big enough to pull this obviously tainted batch. I found a lot of complaints and pet owners experiencing the same issues as my dogs. How odd that the only common denominator is Beneful. I now feed my dogs Eukanuba for German Shepherds. They are very ill and will not be here much longer because of the tumors.
Purina needs to do what is right and pull the product from the shelves. They enjoy the profit but do not want to accept the responsibility. I wonder if the officers of the company feed their pet Beneful? If not, maybe they should and see if they have the exact results we all share. Maybe, just maybe, then they will investigate their products a little more closely. It is too late for my pets, but maybe others will not experience the agony of waking up one morning and finding their pet laying at their bedside ... and not breathing. Maybe they won't have to watch their pet struggle to breathe because the tumors are pushing on their lungs. Just maybe...

With two other dogs, we switched all three to Beneful Weight Control thinking it was a quality brand. I did not do any research and that upsets me now. When he was a puppy, I opted for the pre-operative blood tests prior to his neutering, and everything was fine. Two weeks ago, I had him at the vet for a routine teeth-cleaning, and he had to be put under. I always opt for the pre-op blood work, and it was a good thing I did. The vet called to say they could not safely put him under because his liver enzymes were in the 300 range, and a safe level is around 100. His were three times the limit.
We brought him back home and were told to return in 4 weeks to repeat the blood tests. After a friend's pet died, she did a research and found out about other's experiences with this food. I immediately drove to the pet store (after doing research on dog foods) and switched to a healthier food that does not contain the equivalent of antifreeze. And it concerned us so we switched his food four months ago and he has only had two seizures since we changed his food which they were in the first two weeks of changing his food. He now has more energy as well as being seizure-free! At the time, I had not seen or heard anything about Beneful making dogs sick but I knew it had to be the food making him so sick. I am just thankful I caught it in time as I see a lot of people did not and lost a precious part of their family.

My dog has been sick and vomiting and I couldn't find out why until I heard on the TV all of the complaints of the dogs becoming sick from the same kind of food my dog eats, Beneful prepared meals. I will take what I have bought back to the store and put my dog on another brand of food. Don't buy this food if you love your pet.

We fed our beautiful Golden Retriever Sadie Beneful. She became very, very sick. She was vomiting and having diarrhea and then she developed growths and tumors. The vet said we had to put her down because they couldn't do anything for her at that point. She was young, only 6 when she died and we are heartbroken. We feel like Beneful had something to do with this! Please stay away from this poison!

It's true that I have been reading the complaints in the news about Purina Beneful dog food making consumers' dogs sick. I read where the complaints are skyrocketing due to the recent come forward publicity of this food making dogs sick. Well, thank you all very much. I now know I am not the only one. By word of mouth, I have for a few years now been telling people that Beneful took the life of one of my dogs, gave seizures to another, and caused a bulb tumor on yet another dog. All were throwing up a lot of the time also. Are you kidding? What does it take? I was and I am convinced. I took them off any Purina product. Those that were left are surviving and doing much better on other brands. Nestle's comment about "Kibbles" is also true with me (Kibbles makes my dogs vomit). I thought it may be too much cheap gluten but I am convinced about the problems with Beneful. So much so that my family and I won't eat anything that I know comes from Nestle. Remember the baby formula sent to India?

My dogs had eaten Beneful for years. I noticed on April 3, 2013, my German Shorthair was becoming very weak, severe diarrhea, and an excessive thirst. By April 4, he had deteriorated to the point that he could hardly walk and had extremely bloody stools. We immediately took him to the vet where they did blood tests and told us that he had renal and liver failure, and suspected that he had ingested some kind of poison. They were right! The poison he ingested was Beneful! The vet told us that there was no way that he could survive, and that the most humane thing to do was to put him down. We had to say our goodbyes, and he was gone. I never thought I would have to lose him in such a terrible way, let alone that I would be putting him down on my birthday no less. We began looking on the internet and were shocked to see how many pets (more like family members) had passed in the exact same way as my beloved Max had gone. Purina and the FDA should be ashamed and acknowledge this atrocity. No one or their pet should ever have to experience this situation, ever.

In October of 2012, Beneful killed our beloved cavalier King Charles spaniel Georgia. Thirty minutes after opening a new bag, she started drinking excessively then had diarrhea and started vomiting. She died 10 minutes later. She had been fine one hour earlier playing ball outside. She had just been to the vet in September and was healthy. Purina offered me coupons for our loss and informed me that there were no adverse reports on Beneful. Their claim adjuster, Jake, offered us $250, which we refused. He also said we should have had an autopsy. They have been rude and deny their responsibility in the death of Georgia. Please do not feed this to your dog.

My Wire-haired Doxie had two episodes of what I thought were UTIs (urinary tract infections) while eating Beneful, including one episode of bloody urine. There was no information about Beneful being toxic at that time, but with 20/20 hindsight and seeing other dogs' UTI problems and bleeding to death, it's easy to put it together. Beneful is lying, denying any problems, and offering people coupons (coupons!) for what made their dog(s) sick in the first place!
If your dog died, Purina is also quietly paying $500 plus vet bills to some degree, treating you as a nuisance lawsuit, making you sign an agreement of nondisclosure and stating that you do not hold Purina/Beneful responsible - but you know it is. Now why is Purina doing that if they don't admit there are big, big problems out here? I belong to a group of 835 people online who have had similar experiences with Beneful. Through the grace of God alone, I fed my little dog homemade dog food which he always picked over the Beneful; had he only eaten Beneful, he would probably be dead.
He is my heartbeat. Beneful contains nothing good but does contain propylene glycol which is antifreeze. This product needs to be recalled but Purina does not have the integrity or ** to do that. I am my dog's voice and the voice of all dogs killed or made ill by this trashy food.

Our beautiful 5-year-old German Shepherd dog became violently sick. We discontinued feeding her the Beneful brand dog food and she started feeling better. I started feeding her hamburger and rice and she started coming back to her normal self. Then I added the hamburger/rice to the Beneful to get her to eat the food. Wrong thing to do. Again, violently ill. We have stopped all together feeding her the food, Beneful. I will never feed any animal we have a Purina product again. How can this poison not be recalled by the US government (too many senators sitting on their board of directors?). I hope we have not condemned our dog to death by trying to feed her a food that is easily accessed in grocery stores and the big box stores to try to save a buck. Shame on you Purina for killing American's best friends, not owning up to it and continuing to sell this poison!

Around four years, we have been feeding our three Shih Tzus Purina's Beneful food. Two years ago, we switched our dogs to Beneful healthy weight around the time we got a Labrador puppy. Just around a week ago, we noticed our healthy male Shih Tzu acting funny. He would drink a lot more water than he used to and vomit constantly. He stopped eating Purina Beneful so we switched him to beef stew to try and get him to eat since he wouldn't touch anything else. He was getting extremely skinny and was breathing heavily. Today, 4/4/13, we brought him to the vet. They ran a few x-rays and did a couple tests. They told us that both of his kidneys were failing and we needed to put him out of his misery. We couldn't find out why this happened because he was a healthy dog. So we started researching his food. We found out that Beneful has had several reports about dogs dying so that's why I am writing this.

Our two beautiful pups are like part of the family and we love them dearly. To think that saving a few bucks on dog food (I hate to even call this stuff food) was making them sick breaks our hearts. They were getting worse and worse and we didn't know what was wrong. Fortunately, we found out that others were experiencing the same issues around malnourished dogs that were being fed Beneful. The same symptoms were being posted here, but we were lucky to change products in time. Now they are getting healthy food, without just filler and corn, and we expect them to bounce back. I am so glad that we caught it in time and I'm very sorry for the loss of others who have posted here. This needs to be taken off the market!

After my husband's aunt's dog died of renal failure, he brought the unfinished bag of food to our house. Normally I would not feed my dog this food due to her corn allergies. But with all the chaos of the holidays, he put the food out. My dog ate some here and there. His dog did not eat any. My dog was a great eater. He took the food away (which we later found weevils in the bottom of bag). The dogs were put back on their normal diet. However, my dog had started acting weird. After the holidays, she started throwing up and lost 25% of her body weight. With the entire family being sick, I thought or rather hoped she was just sick like us.
I took her in and her kidney levels were through the roof. I had her hospitalized to stabilize her levels and continued subcutaneous treatment at home. She seemed to get better for a few days, but she declined rapidly despite everything we could do. She was an older dog, but she was in good health. I didn't know what was happening to other dogs and Beneful. It has been 9 weeks from her death, so I am able to process all of this. Two dogs, one bag. I'm so sorry baby.

My dog has been very sick since November of 2012. After taking him to an animal hospital for vomiting blood, they treated him for poisoning ($300 plus). We changed to a rice and chicken diet and after 30 days of treatment, he did get better. But three months later, the same thing again. We took him back to the animal hospital again because he had bloody diarrhea. They thought he might have colitis and gave more meds, still kept on rice chicken diet. He got better so we started to slowly feed him his Beneful dog food. Next morning he started vomiting blood again. We stopped the dog food and guess what? He got better. There is definitely something wrong with this dog food and needs a recall to save other dog owners from going through what I have. I have read there are many other cases with this same issue.

I had changed my dog's diet from Purina One to Beneful after not being able to purchase her typical food at the store. She seemed to like it. At first, she seemed to have extra energy (I purchased Playful Life). After being on the food for about 6 months, she suddenly became very ill. Upon bringing her to the vet, we discovered through blood work that she was in renal failure. The vet decided to check for leptospirosis and other issues, but to no avail. We couldn’t figure out why she was experiencing an acute renal failure.
He and specialists continued to ask if she may have been exposed to anti-freeze. There is no way she could have been exposed to toxins of any kind. Thousands of dollars later, she recovered from the renal failure. Had we not been able to financially handle the bill, she would have died. After the treatment, we continued to search for a cause and could not find one. After reading some of the reviews of Beneful, I am convinced it was this food that caused her renal failure. She is now on a prescription diet to be safe. I never thought to look at the ingredients of her food (not that I would know what was safe vs. not safe), but I will always check with my vet from now on.

I have been using Beneful for my dog most of his life. Recently my dog has been having vomiting spells. I could not figure what was the problem since nothing else has changed for my dog. I talked to a neighbor who owned dogs and her 1st question was, "Are you feeding him Beneful?" And I said, "Yes." She begged me to stop and switch dog food. I started searching the internet for a similar problem as mine and was alarmed by the many pet deaths and the complaints and ignorant denials by Purina. I stopped feeding Purina products to my dog and his overall health has improved. My dog no longer vomits. I will be sure to inform everybody I can to avoid the poison being sold by Purina.

I moved to a new location which was right across the street from a Schnucks. And as a single parent, I decided it would be best to switch to a dog food that in the event that I ran out, I could replenish by quickly running across the street with the kids to pick up more. Unfortunately, Schnucks did not carry her brand so I decided to try Beneful. (I tried both the regular and the "Healthy Fiesta".) I made the transition and my 75lb Boxer/Great Dane mix who has always been healthy (never had a single problem) became violently ill for five solid days. Unable to keep food down, unable to control her bowels, blood in her stool.
Finally in fear that she was going to dehydrate or die if we continued on this food, we went out at night and got her old food and immediately switched her back. By the next morning, she was 50% percent better. Now almost 48 hours later, she is nearly back to her normal self! She is keeping food down. She is finally able to control her bowels, and the consistency of her stool is firming up. I feared for her life and planned to take her to the emergency animal clinic that next morning if switching her back to her old food did not show some minute level of improvement.

I have had dogs most of my 70 years. When I was younger, I remember feeding our dogs Purina Dog Chow and having them as companions for many years. My wife and I currently have a 12-year old dachshund and a 5-year old Australian Shepherd. For the past several years, we have been feeding them Purina Fit and Trim. Towards the end of 2012, we began having difficulty finding it so we switched to Beneful Healthy Weight at the end of December 2012. Several weeks ago, our daughter told us about possible problems with the Beneful line. We spoke with our vet and he told me that he was aware of the claimed problems but that he had seen no problems with dogs that he treats and that he had seen noting definitive in the professional publications he reads. So we continued with caution.
I have been monitoring a number of sites for about a month and have observed a sudden increase in the number of complaints. I recently called Purina and made an inquiry as to the safety of Beneful. The response was as would be expected. The customer service representative advised she was not aware of any documented problems with any of the Beneful line of products. I feel certain that a percentage of the postings on this site discuss problems that are totally unrelated to a food problem. Unfortunately, as pet owners, many of us tend to be emotional about our pets and, when something happens, want to point a finger at someone for causing the problem.
The sheer number of complaints over the past few months cannot be ignored. The lack of any response or expression of concern by Purina is in line with corporate behavior. To admit any wrongdoing would subject the company to possible legal action. My position on this issue is that there is a potential hazard to our dogs in feeding them any of the Beneful products. With all of the options available, it seems to be a no brainer to make an immediate switch. Our choice has been the Petsmart Authority line. Price is not an issue and within reason. When I compare the ingredients found in Beneful Healthy Weight versus Authority Weight Management, I cannot help but wonder why anyone would choose any of the Beneful products in the first place.
