I will never feed my dogs this food again. My 9 year old chihuahua Jayda was very thirsty all the time. She would loss her bowels so we took her to the vet who said she had kidney stones and put her on antibiotics. Was told if she started to do it again bring her back. So she was fine for about a month and it started again only she was peeing blood, very lethargic, seizure like activity. So we took her to the emergency vet where she coded twice and the vet said we had a hard decision to make. So we watch her being brought back to life twice. I made the decision to put her to sleep. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. The vet said that it's a good chance that it was the food we were feeding her. I hope people read this and never feed their dogs Beneful food.

My grandmother fed her Chihuahua Purina Beneful. I don't know for how many months she was feeding her it. After she passed away in November 2014, I took the dog. I continued feeding her the same dog food and within 2 months she stopped eating, began having seizures, and lost so much weight. I took her to the vet and they couldn't figure out what is causing her seizures but they are so severe now she's having 12 a day and I have started her on medicine, but unsure if she will survive. I really feel this food is the problem for her severe illness after being a very healthy dog for 7 years.

Our beautiful mixed breed Reese is about 9 yrs old. He is medium to small at about 29 lbs. We've always fed him the yellow, no name brand dog food from our grocery store (we'd mix canned and dry). Reese always did well and got clean bills of health on his veterinary visits - his last physical and shots being six months back. With him getting on in age, I recently decided it best to switch him to what I believed was a better food for him. Beneful is what I chose. The packaging is more appealing, it cost a little more and it's made by Nestle Purina, one of the biggest names in the industry - it must be better, right?
After about a month or so of what I'll call "odd" behavior from our dog - things like him being more picky with his food and him seeming a bit less energetic, and drinking more water than normal - his health really began to deteriorate last week. He altogether just stopped eating. Still with a deep thirst though, but no energy, sleeping most the day. We expected and hoped whatever ailed him would soon pass but he was not getting better. We took him to our vet today where upon examination, it was found that Reese had lost about 5 lbs., was severely dehydrated, with suspected liver problems as a lump was found in that general area. We are all deeply saddened as the vet prepared us for the worst. We'll be going back on Monday to follow up with an ultrasound.
It should be said that I do not have any - nor have I yet heard of any scientific proof that Purina's Beneful food is at fault. They haven't pulled it from the shelves but it seems a common link in our dog's illnesses. I too will look into the testing of this food and I invite any interested persons to possibly join forces, and perhaps share the cost (of testing) or at least share our findings. I live in Mississauga, Ont., Canada.

I had a min pin and she was a racer dog. And had her 15 years. She got bloated. She was bleeding and she then couldn't see good and couldn't go to bathroom and if so she bleed and threw up and could go no more walk. In Nov. 2014 she died and she is sadly missed. I guess the company needs to have something down why.

My 10 year old German shepherd ate Beneful dry dog food exclusively. Three months ago she got an ear infection and the vet treated her and did a physical and she told me Jackie looked great at 70lbs. Within a few weeks her front paws got really big looked swollen but not painful for her. I thought because her hips were weak her pressure went on her front paws. It has been a very cold winter and she was moving much slower. I took her in to get nails clipped and she was ok. Then she started drinking lots of water, and peeing in the house which she never did before.
I switched her food after hearing about Beneful and she stopped eating the food. I tried giving her dog biscuits which she a bit of and some chicken but I had to take her in to see the vet after she had labored breathing. I had to euthanize her that night due to destroyed lungs and blood cell count. Devastated does not come close to describing how my son and I felt when we said goodbye to our family pet of 10 years so suddenly.

Our little dog had been experiencing sudden onset of symptoms, weakness, vomiting, lethargy. Her eyes would glaze over and she would not want to move. Almost appeared as she had been poisoned. She eventually would vomit and then within 24 hours she would be back to her old self. Initially we thought she may licked something off the garage floor but after it happened again and again we thought maybe it was neurological from a previous injury where she ran into the wall and knocked herself out.
However, after this story was brought to my attention and further reading the stories online regarding Beneful dog food; we discontinued the Beneful and the symptoms have totally disappeared. We had been feeding her the healthy weight product mostly. My husband purchased a small bag of regular by mistake and was intermittently giving that to her in lieu of the weight management product and this makes sense now why the symptoms were intermittent as well. Thank you to the person who put two and two together and finally had their dog evaluated by a vet or our beloved dog may have died.

About 2 months ago I got a little Pug pup for my birthday. As soon as I got him we went straight to Walmart and got his food and his eating bowls and a teething toy. Since that day I have bought Beneful healthy growth for puppies. Tank has never set foot outside unless he went for a ride. He was very energetic and fun until 3 days ago. He stopped eating started having diarrhea and vomiting. The next morning when I woke up he was in living room laying down and looked very distraught or drunken, he couldn't move. About an hour later he had what seemed to be a bad seizure. While calling to try to have him seen at a vet, he had a second seizure. After calming him I held him and watched him take his last breath before I could get him out the door.
After that I learned from a pet store clerk that she had heard of a few incidents where pets were lost due to same symptoms as Tank. I still have his food here at home and am in search of a way for it to be tested. I am very frustrated to hear that after all the complaints, reviews, lawsuits etc., that they are still able to sell this food in stores. Is this what killed Tank???

My wife and I took in an 8-year-old black lab mastiff mix. When she was dropped off to us, she came with a big bag of Beneful Healthy Weight. I noticed she had been drinking an extreme amount of water and started looking online for reasons this may be happening. This is when I noticed the lawsuit against Purina. I switched Molly's food right away . Unfortunately she was still drinking a ton of water so I took her to the vet. Molly has diabetes, swollen lymph nodes and her liver enzymes are high due to a possible tumor. We cannot afford an ultrasound so we are hoping the medicine helps.

I was feeding all 3 of my dogs the Beneful Playful. My Bernese Mountain Dog was always licking himself and tearing his fur out. Then my miniature schnauzer was 3 and he started getting sick on a Saturday night. So I called vet and told them he was throwing up and give him pepto-bismol. Sunday morning I woke up and it looked like he had been murdered in my kitchen. Its like something ruptured and he bled out and died - really heart broken. Then I got a pitbull at 6 weeks. So he started having sickness and getting UTIs - quit feeding all my dogs that. Now healthier except Maxwell - R.I.P.

This morning he woke up in the middle of a dead sleep and started throwing up twice as much and threw up all the dog food he ate that night. Took him outside and his legs gave out. Rushed him to pet er and they gave him some meds and he didn't make it. I would NEVER, EVER, EVER recommend this dog food. This should be off the market. A piece of my heart is gone, my child. My 9-year old Chihuahua was happy and healthy but started getting sick and eventually died in August 2014. My sister was caring for my dog while I found a place to live and she told me my dog would eat her dogs' food. She fed her dogs Beneful. The vet was not sure what was causing her sickness without blood tests and x-rays. I did not have a job so I was trying to save up. Unfortunately, it was too late. I read the list of symptoms and was shocked to realize my dog had the same ones. She was extremely boated and her eyes were infected. I tried giving her antibiotics but they did not help. She started having seizures and then suddenly died.
I am angry that Purina is not taking the complaints seriously and not doing more to stop the sale of a potentially harmful dog food. There are too many complaints for it to be coincidental. It's unfortunate that so many pet owners put their trust in Purina to sell quality dog food only to find out its not, and Purina will not accept any responsibility. No one deserves watching their dog suffer or the pain of losing a precious member of their family.

Beneful dog food killed mine and my aunt's dog. My dog Shiloh was a very healthy boy. We fed him Beneful dog food and within two weeks he was so sick that yesterday we had to put him to sleep because his liver and heart were failing his stomach bloated because of all the fluid he lost a lot of weight couldn't move. He was such a happy dog before we gave him the dog food. My aunt's dog was healthy a little over weight. She started not feeling good then her stomach bloated and got real big. Took her to the vet. She grew a tumor underneath her stomach she had to be put down two weeks ago! All this happened within a month. How is it that two dogs are put down within a month after eating the same dog food? My family will not stop until Beneful dog food owns up to killing all these people's family members! If I should have known, she would still be with us. Can't believe this petty company is still on the market. They should stop selling their product that instead of helping pets, are killing them. Really sad that the founder of this company will never be able to make up for so much damage they'd cause.

She was 14 years old so we didn't put much thought into it because she was around her life limit.
Today my German shepherd Lab mix passed away. Not even two months later. He was 8 years old. He had tumors mainly on one kidney that moved to his spleen and liver. We fed our dog Chavez Purina Beneful for three years up to his passing last year. He would frequently be thirsty, and throw up water and his food, and sometimes be lethargic. The vets could never really find a root cause, and would give him a clean bill of health after a physical checkup and running tests. A few days leading up to his death, he barely touched his food and would wait almost the whole day for table scraps.
On Oct 2014 I had to rush into an emergency vet, because Chavez had labored breathing, had trouble moving, stopped eating and seemed to be in pain. The vet told us he had internal bleeding, and a very low white blood cell count. The internal bleeding, was so severe that the vet felt that it more humane to euthanize him since he didn't think he'd survive the surgery. We were left with a large vet bill and we came home to an empty house full of his toys, bed, and food bowls. His loss was heartbreaking. The vet guessed a few possibilities for what could of caused it but since Chavez was already gone... it was not investigated further. Reading these comments really hit home. I feel very strongly that we were slowly poisoning our dog with Purina Beneful.

After seeing all the bad reports on Beneful, my husband and I decided to switch our dog food. We got Blue Mountain and slowly started to work out the Beneful, as not to shock his system. Today my husband took our pup outside and he couldn't pee. My husband immediately called the vet to take him in. My husband has a very good idea that it was UTI. We took him to the vet, they did an xray, and he had two small kidney stones pressed up against his urethra. They had to insert a catheter to push the stones back up into the bladder, and then proceeded with surgery to remove the stones from his stomach. Doctor told us they removed the two, and found a ton of little ones crystallizing inside. This prompted me to think, the change of food disrupted his stomach to move the stones!!!
I then looked at other reviews on here, to see if any stories matched up!! In the first 6 pages, I saw 5 stories that matched!!!! My fur baby was lucky! We noticed it in time. I feel appalled that this company would care so little about the welfare of these innocent creatures!! I also feel such sympathy for the others that have lost their babies!! Just appalled! I will be joining the lawsuit against Beneful, that their thoughtlessness would cause the deaths of so many of our loved animals!!

In 2010 I had a 2 year old Cocker Spaniel who was my sweet companion. She got me through some rough times. I had started feeding her Beneful healthy weight when she was around 1 1/2 years old. She had experienced diarrhea several times and it would pass. She would throw up her food shortly after eating several times. I knew that dogs just sometimes go through a day occasionally where they have an upset stomach.
One night she was lethargic and when we got up in the morning she was the same way. I had to leave for work and when I got home there was this black tarry liquid all over the kitchen floor. I had dark wood floors and didn't know what it was. She didn't greet me at the door and was still sick. I couldn't take her to the animal hospital and had to wait until Banfield opened the next morning.
The tarry stuff on the floor was blood. She bled out through her urine. Her white blood count was bad. She was on iv antibiotics... basically after all said and done they said she would have to have transfusions for the rest of her short life and would never be able to run and play. I now have another cocker spaniel who is 4 and I feed her Beneful. She gets sick about once a month to where she vomits. I never thought about it being the food. I am stopping it now and going with something natural. I'm so scared that now she may have a short life. I will be taking her to the vet.

I have a 9-month old Pitbull that had eaten Beneful ever since she has been off of puppy food. She enjoyed it and we didn't hear of the complaints/lawsuits until the day after she got sick, which also happened to be the same day we opened a new bag of Beneful. Her first symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea followed with lethargy, and no appetite by the next morning. It was worse that it was on the weekend. This continued for 2 days until we took her to the emergency after hours vet and she was very dehydrated, had lost 20 pounds and had to stay on fluids all day. They did x-rays, blood work, etc. and couldn't figure out her problem. We took her back the next day and for more fluids, she was still vomiting even with anti-nausea meds. Took her back a 3rd day for an emergency spay...they thought it may have been a female infection caused by just getting off her first heat.
While in surgery the doctor found she had colitis, and her intestines and organs were severely swollen, inflamed & irritated. Colitis is caused by parasite or diet and she had no parasites. Our vet then asked what food she had been eating, when told Beneful she said to "never feed her that crap again". 3 days in the hospital, 6 prescriptions and $1900 later, our baby is finally started to eat again and gain some weight back. We kept the newly opened bag of Beneful only for testing purposes & we will never buy any Purina brand anything again.

The stories and symptoms described by many pet owners makes me question the cause of death to our sweet little Bichon Harley that died suddenly on 12/17/14. Was feeding him Purina Beneful dry dog food in 2013 for morning meal and fresh cooked chicken for dinner. He seemed to like it at first but after a few months would no longer eat it. His first change in behavior was a constant rubbing of his body up against the wall, back and forth, up and down the hallway. He would vomit occasionally and eat grass.
I changed his dry food to Iams Sensitive. 12/2013 he suddenly lost a lot of weight, couldn't get enough to eat or drink, had bladder issues and the vomiting increased. Vet diagnosis, diabetic. Liver and kidney enzymes elevated. Insulin twice a day and a round of antibiotics seemed to stabilize him. He lost all his hair, but his weight improved for awhile. Switched food to Freshpet and home cooked chicken but in Dec, 2014 he started vomiting non stop, wouldn't eat and couldn't keep water down. We've been feeding our two dogs Purina Beneful for a long time but occasionally we got batches that smelled really bad (to us) from Walmart but didn't really think much of it since the dogs did eat them. One time we noticed one dog having really bad-smelling stools afterwards (like a propane tank leaking and worse) and couldn't find out why. Then we switched brands for a while when Beneful was out of stock at the store. The problem went away. Then we bought Beneful again and just this week the problem is back. The other dog so far has no symptoms or problems but after the news this morning, we're dumping what's left and switching. Reading about this online today gave us the answer.
Also, we have a cat that we've been feeding Purina soft food to, and some treats. The cat started throwing up a few weeks ago, every day. We stopped giving her treats for a while and she stopped throwing up. Then last night, one treat of "Purina Whisker Lickins, chicken and cheese flavors," and she threw up almost right away. After really looking at the ingredients we see there's TWO artificial coloring, Yellow 5 and 6, (why?) and a bunch of other chemicals.
One thing on the package should be a heads up -- "Store in a Cool, Dry Place." Here in Arizona in the summer, no trucking company I know of ships Dog and Cat food "in a cool truck" in the summer. Temps inside these trucks can easily hit 130-150 degrees. Can that be safe for transporting these products? And do you think any company would send this animal food in a refrigerated truck? So while the food may be OK when leaving the factory, depending on how far it has to travel, it may be unsafe upon arrival. Anybody know of any tests made on these foods if exposed to high temperatures?

So I started feeding my 4 yr. Teacup chihuahua with Beneful dog food for small breeds. 2 days later she started with very loose bowel movements. Next day she couldn't move, her eyes were yellow, and stopped breathing. I was not aware of all the problems with the Beneful brand. But If there is so many complaints, why do they still allow them to sell it? Very very sad.

I've felt comfortable feeding my Pomeranian Beneful because Purina has been around forever and I felt it was a good choice. February 1st, out of nowhere, my sweet lil 6 year old Harley had a seizure. A full blown, stiff body, convulsions, peeing on himself seizure. I took him to the vet where they ran a battery of labs and said that he was the picture of health. My baby will not play anymore, doesn't bark at other dogs and does very little other than lay around and look depressed. He won't eat unless I hand-feed him meat or occasionally he'll eat eggs. Since that 1st seizure, he's had 6 more with the last 2 being only about 8 hours apart. My husband and I are now forced with making a decision of medicating him for the rest of whatever life he may have left (no guarantee that it will help) or putting him down. So awful that a dog food company would do this (and get away with it) to innocent animals and those of us that treasure them. Shame on you Purina.

My 6 year old Shih Poo Bentley who is my vital service dog and my 2 year old Havanese Phoenix have been eating Beneful for a little less than 3 months. It was provided by a charity organization that helps with disabled persons mitigating food costs by providing necessary needs for your dogs needs including a 20% vet discount. Well because of the food they gave me I needed that discount. In one month my Bentley stopped being able to jump on the bed. I'm disabled and picking him up wasn't a problem. When I went to lift him I noticed omg he's so heavy. He looked wider but his hair is left long for winter and the onset of the gain was literally like over night.
Every day after I've noticed him getting puffier and puffier. I took him to the vet, xray shows nothing but weight gain, cholesterol is high and blood and crystals were found in his urine. The Havanese has been losing weight and throwing up. The only change is Beneful. Vet doesn't seem too concerned. I know THIS isn't my boy. He can't stay sitting. He just slides to the floor and lays down. Monday I'll find out their course of treatment. I'm poor, it was 404.00 for just 3 tests and they're taking ultra sounds, culturing his urine.. then there's Phoenix. I need Purina to pay these bills! Anyone else have a diagnosis with the same symptoms as my pups. Email me at **. Thank you. Any organizations that help? Bentley detects fainting spells and alerts me which is vital as I live and do everything alone and I love them to death. I can't put them down but can't pay for costly vet treatments!

I've fed my dog beneful for a few years. I recently had to put my dog down cause she was having seizures and vomiting and diarrhea. These are the same symptoms many other dogs got when consuming beneful. I took her to the animal hospital and they gave her eye drops which had nothing to do with her symptoms so the next day I just took her to the vet where they did a blood test, her white blood cells were through the roof!!! The vets were baffled they had no clue why this was happening or how to even fix it, so then I had to make the decision to put her down rather than have to try to figure out what was even wrong with her due to I didn't have the money to try and figure it out. If only I would have known about this sooner I could have saved my pom named puppie.

I boarded my 2 dogs out at the vets for 11 days to go on a vacation. I forgot to leave my cell phone # so my vet could get in contact with me. We got home on a Saturday not expecting to pick up my dogs until that Monday. I had a message on my answering machine that Spike wasn't doing good at all. On Wednesday he seemed to hurt in his shoulder and neck. Thursday he went completely off of his food and water. Friday he was checked for his kidneys which were shutting down and was put on a IV to hopefully start the kidneys working again. Saturday, Spike never passed any fluids and was taken off the IV. Sunday, I did call the vet's office and I got to see Spike. But what a shock it was for me to have dropped off a sassy dog to one who was gasping for breath and was too weak to even hold up his head. His lungs were filling up with fluids and a lot of red mucus had come out of his nose.
For Spike's sake we all agreed to put down on 3-1-2015. Spike has for as long as I fed him the Beneful dog food, always drank a lot of water and at times had the diarrhea badly. I never thought any thing was bad with the beneful dog food until it was in the news. To lose Spike hurt very much and for Beneful to say that there is nothing wrong with the dog food; shame on your company! I lost a little buddy of mine and you Beneful lost a customer. I never will again trust Purina dog foods of any kind.

We have a miniature Australian Sheppard. In late November 2014 we started feeding our dog Purina dog chow. By the end of December we came back home from a funeral and there was bloody diarrhea on the floor. We weren't even gone 24 hours, there was blood all over the butt end of our dog. So we rushed him to the vet. They said he has high liver enzymes and when at the vet’s office he vomited and it was like he vomited in insides out. But they kept him for 2 nights and when he came home he was a little better cause we were feeding him chicken and rice that we made for him. Tried to keep him on that but then we just started putting boiled chicken in with some of his purina dog chow. And I can show you pictures of his bloody diarrhea, but took him back to vet with same symptoms.
But since I heard about purina beneful I thought I would change his dog food cause he has the same symptoms as what I'm reading about. But he has been on another brand not Purina and he's starting to want to play, he smiles again and you can tell he feels so much better, so, I think it it's ALL PURINA DOG FOOD not just the Beneful brand. Please if you are feeding your dogs any kind of purina stop feeding them. Before your dog end up getting sick. I am going to have the food we were feeding him checked cause we still had some. I have an 8 year old Havanese named Cisco that I have had since he was 6 weeks old. He was always so full of energy and solid as a rock. He would run up and down the stairs chasing his toy, run circles (literally) out in the yard, stand up on his hind legs and dance around in circles. Now, he is nearly dead. And it happened in such a short amount of time.. It started with gagging, coughing and throwing up every once in a while. Then he started losing weight, became lethargic and was having trouble breathing. I took him to the vet and when she x-rayed him, she said he had congestive heart failure. He was so full of fluid that she could not even make out his heart and lungs on the x-ray. She could not determine the cause without surgery which I could not afford.
I had two choices: put him down or she could tap him, remove the fluid, put him on medicine and just see how he did. I chose the latter. After he was tapped, she gave me water pills for him and had me return in two weeks. She had to tap him again. This time not quite as much fluid. So, in addition to the water pills, she added blood pressure pills and heart pills. Altogether, his medicines run about $100/month which I cannot afford to continue for very long. My vet, as a reality check, reminded me that all we are doing right now is making him comfortable, not curing him, and it would only be a matter of time until we could no longer keep him comfortable.
I was racking my brain trying to figure out how in the world he could be so healthy, strong and energetic and then become deathly sick in such a short amount of time.. Then I heard about Beneful which is what I had been feeding him. As a matter of fact, I ran out of my last bag of it about a month ago and bought Eukanuba, which I cannot normally afford, but I had a $10.00 off coupon for it (or I would have purchased another bag of Beneful). So, the Eukanuba is what I currently have. But he won't hardly eat right now anyway. He actually likes the Greenies pill pockets that I use to give him medicine and that is about all he will eat..
After reading about all the other dogs that have become deathly sick eating Beneful, I am convinced that is what has caused my dog's illness. What was once a vibrant, energetic, extremely healthy dog is now, literally, a skeleton of a dog that doesn't even want to get out of his bed, has to be carried up and down the stairs, shivers all the time and when I pet him, all I feel are his bones. At least he is alive but I don't know for how long. I keep praying he will recover from this but it has been nearly two months now. I will keep him on the medicine as long as I can and love him with all my heart. That is all I can do for him. It is breaking my heart.

Do you think all these families are losing their family members (dogs) and we are lying about it? PULL THE POISON OFF THE SHELFS!!! I feed my dog beneful and I’ve always wondered why he throws up so much and I asked my wife how is it that he drinks over 10 Poland springs bottles of water daily and now I know why. Because I’ve been slowly killing him. If something happens to my best friend I won’t wait for you to pull the items off the shelves because I will start a campaign for all dog owners/lovers to go to every market in USA and tear and rip open every bag/can, etc and toss is out and as I write this I really hope someone sets a date for this to be done.
I was at the market yesterday and this lady behind me notices I have several treats for my dog (because I felt bad I’ve been killing him slowly) and she began to tell me how she misses her 8 year old dog that just died out of nowhere so I asked her what dog food she was feeding her dog and guess what she said, "BENEFUL" and I told her what’s been going on lately and this poor old lady with no family but just her beloved dog broke down in the middle of the supermarket and began to cry. Something needs to be done ASAP before people take justice in their own hands. Take it out on the ones who are killing our dogs and the ones who haven't done anything to stop this murderous spree.

2 weeks ago we purchased Beneful original with real beef. We fed it to my dog who was 12 years old, and what I would call a 'Toto' dog. Smaller breed, mixed but looked so much like Toto from the Wizard of Oz. Prior to feeding him this bag of food, my dog Max had been healthy and happy. He still ran around like a pup. Anyone who knew him saw how full of energy he was. 2 weeks ago I started noticing my dog becoming a bit on the "lazy" side. At first, I wasn't too concerned. Until Thursday the 26th of February at 8:20. My dog Max had what I could call an episode. I had just finished giving him a bath and was drying him off when his back legs gave out and he dropped. He laid there for about a minute. At first I wasn't 100% sure at first that it was a seizure, Max had NEVER had a seizure before, which is why I called it an episode. I wasn't sure what it was.
The next morning my dog ran outside to bark at the neighbor's dogs. It was then I knew for sure that my dog Max was experiencing seizures. He fell to the ground and began wetting himself. He had two more seizures Friday night. Later that evening, while speaking to my mother in law she told me she had seen a story on the news regarding the Beneful dog food. I immediately dumped the rest of the bag in the garbage. My dog was exhibiting all the same symptoms of the warnings.
On Saturday, I did not see my dog experience any more seizures. He did however have some pee spots under him in any spot that he laid. That night my dog ate his food (which made me excited since he had been avoiding food off and on for the last two weeks). Later that night my dog threw up. On Sunday my dog ate his food, but pretty much just stayed in one spot for the whole day. Sunday night, my dog passed away. I plan on having him cremated, however I do not have all the funds to make that possible. The vet also mentioned that they could do an autopsy to see if Beneful was for sure the cause, but it's an additional $250. Again I do not have those funds.
I strongly believe that this batch of Beneful is the cause of my dog's death. Max may have been older, but he was healthy. None of the symptoms began til after I fed him this dog food. And the way it happened was so fast. I am heartbroken. I inherited this dog from my grandmother 2 years ago when she passed away. The two of them are back together but my heart aches. I would be ok with this if my dog had passed from old age, but I do not believe that is the case. I don't know why I didn't put two and two together sooner and I wish I had. I wish I had seen the news myself, but I did not. I read up on it after my mother in law brought it to my attention. I really hoped my dog would pull out of it, but again he did not.
My dog is currently in a freezer in a Modesto veterinary hospital. I have made one payment to get him cremated. If anyone is willing to pay for the autopsy I would greatly appreciate it, I could give you the vet's contact information so that you know that is where it is going. Please Please Please someone help!!! You can reach me on Facebook.

She was very lethargic, and appeared to be very depressed. She looked drunk when she tried to walk. Shorty had diabetes so when she starting drinking excessively and having accidents in the house I assumed her insulin dose was too high.
By day two and three she would no longer eat or get up at all, and being diabetic and dependent on insulin shots morning and night that had to be administered with food, I could no longer give her shots of insulin. She was very obviously suffering greatly between the internal bleeding, (causes unknown) a lump you could feel in her throat, not eating, and not getting her insulin, which is a life or death threat in itself, and more than likely kidney failure was happening as well. My 3 year old puggle has been eating BENEFUL for some time now. Previously she was eating Science Diet and then Iam's which she was fine on but I wanted to try a more cost effective dog food I could get in grocery stores. The issues began with what we thought was a backward sneeze which is common in puggles, then heavy breathing (also common in puggles) and from time to time stomach upset and vomiting.
In October 2014 my puggle got horribly sick with vomiting and diarrhea that continues for days. She refused to eat. I took her to our veterinarian who examined her and said that it may be a stomach bug. The veterinarian gave her a shot to calm her stomach and a 10 day antibiotic. She seemed to do fine on the medication. The vomiting and diarrhea subsided but the breathing issues continued.
February 28, 2015 my puggle all of a sudden started to vomit stomach bile, was lethargic, her gums were pale and she could barely stand up. I rushed her in a snow storm to the closest veterinary hospital. After fluids, lab work and $450 later I was told my puggles liver value was elevated 3 times the normal. Due to the fact that she hadn't gotten into anything and she was a young dog, it didn't make much sense. She was given medication to help bring down her liver value and I was told to follow up the next day with my regular vet.
At the follow up my regular vet seem stumped until I mentioned her normal diet of BENEFUL!!!! That was the BIG RED FLAG!!!! My vet said she is almost positive that the diet of BENEFUL is most likely what she thinks had been making my dog sick. I am LIVID!!!! My puggle I hope will recover. I pray that we got it in time. I have to continue the meds for 2 weeks and in 3 weeks do more blood work to check her liver values again.

Today my little bubbles died. It all began late last week when I heard of a class action law suit against Purina Nestle Beneful brand dog food. I was feeding this food to my dog for about 3 years. I stopped as soon as I read about the law suit. It was that day that I began making my own dog food, and feeding her only this. While she was eating beneful for 3 years she ate it and liked it but she was never healthy. She would tend to get sick very easily. Never ever related it to her food. But looking back now it does make sense. So after starting her on homemade food last week, she was fine for a couple of days, then Sunday March 1st. she began to throw up what she ate. It just kept getting worse over the next 2 days until she died today of liver and kidney failure.
At this point I cannot prove that beneful killed her, I only know she was never healthy eating it but it was the only food she would eat consistently. I cut her off abruptly and fed her only homemade food. Cutting her off like that may have done more harm than good. I should have weaned her off slowly. It was liver and kidney failure and I can only imagine that her system needed to be weaned off. The failures may have been caused by the sudden shock to her system. I will be looking at my legal options considering all the complaints I read here and now 2 law suits against this brand. I will be get an autopsy to confirm the failures and go from there.

February 17, 2015, I had to put my 15 month old Rottie, Nikita down. I noticed a foul odor from her breath around 2 weeks prior. Saturday AM 2/14 - she had diarrhea (Traces of blood in it) all over my dining room floor. I cleaned it up and went to work (not thinking anything at the time except maybe her mouth was making her sick). 2/15 - two more bouts with diarrhea. 2/16 Monday night, she vomited all over her blanket, to the point where I just threw her blanket away and got her comforter. 2/17 - She was very lethargic. I waited till 4pm when the wellness clinic opened. I told him about her breath and gums (still thinking this was her problem). He told me to put her on the scale, she weighed 57 pounds. (In July I had her spayed she was 65.8 pounds.)
I picked her up and placed her on his examining table. He looked in her mouth, which was pale and bloody, and told me to get her to an emergency vet... he didn't think she would make it through the night. I didn't know what to think. A million thoughts were running through my head... diabetes?? cancer?? My husband and I get her to the emergency vet. They did blood work and x-rays. She was anemic and she was in the last stages of kidney failure. Her abdomen was tender. Did she get into antifreeze, she asked about 4 times. No she didn't. The vet told us her kidneys were 15 times worse than a 15 yr old dog, and that no money in the world would save her. She would have to have constant blood transfusions and kidney transplant was not likely to work. We had to put our baby girl to sleep.
I received her lab results and x-rays in the mail today. We were in total shock. I still am. If I only knew what I know now. I fed my Kita Beneful for a month. I asked about Beneful food. They told me to call Purina and tell them what happened... well that didn't go very well. Their phones are not being answered and their online chat is offline. Same symptoms, toxic (toxic poisoning looked like) fatigue, weight loss, kidney disease, abnormal cells, breath had odor, loss of bowel control. We have had several dogs live to old ages. Never have I lost a dog at a young age. I believe Beneful was the cause of both dogs demise!!!

I have 13 small breed dogs and 1 large breed. 10 of them began exhibiting excessive bloating, diarrhea and vomiting. I found out about the Beneful issue and worried as I'd been feeding them it for just over 2 years. In the last 6 months the bloat came on and I thought they were just getting fat. I changed them from healthy radiance to healthy weight. Then the vomiting and diarrhea started. I took them to the vet. He did liver function test and kidney tests. They all have damaged livers and kidneys. Along with a gut infection causing the bloat.
Thank God they will recover. But now all are on antibiotics for 10 days. I immediately changed their dog food to a natural... NOT PURINA!!! I found out through a little digging that the use of Propylene Glycol is a common practice. NOW I CHECK EVERY LABEL! WHAT LOGIC SAYS USING ANTIFREEZE IN FOOD IS WISE? HEY PURINA... IF IT'S SO SAFE, LETS PUT IT IN YOUR KIDS' FOOD. GEE, NOT SO COMFORTABLE NOW HUH?

He eventually he stopped eating and the day we took him to the vet he had a seizure. Our vet did blood work. We were told that he was in kidney failure but could not understand why. After several test and an ultrasound by a specialist, there is still no understanding of why this happened. Then I heard about the complaints and problems other dog owners had about Beneful dog food. Prior to his sickness, we were giving him Beneful dog food. My poor boy is on several medications. I still have the dog food and am going to have it tested. Have been using Healthy Weight for years. My dog Sadie used to throw up right after eating for some time. She developed a 'gagging cough' with yellow phlegm spit up which was attributed to allergies. Three years ago got another dog Scooby. Both dogs had issues with skin itching and hot spots - again believing it was allergies. They licked their paws. The cough was shared by both. Last week Sadie's cough worsened to the point of having to put her down due to CHF. Our sadness now has some anger that this issue appears to be so far reaching with a common denominator. Purina - here's your challenge - provide positive testing results that your products did not hurt our dogs. Prayers for all sick pets and heartbroken owners. I can provide years of receipts of purchase.

Now though my Boston Terrier had a seizure & stopped breathing due to Beneful & the poisonous propylene glycol that is in it & other Purina dog foods. Why would a pet food company ever put a poison into pet food! Save a lot of lives & be the better ones - recall the food with the poison in it & stop putting the poison in the pet food.

Our lab and great pyrenees have been having trouble lately getting up and down stairs to go to the bathroom outside our home. I am a registered veterinary technician with 7 years of specialized training and 10 years work experience behind me. I have been reading a lot of these reviews and I have a couple of things to say about Beneful. #1. It is not a high end dog food. For those of you who thought it was a great food, I am sorry to tell you that is a very low-grade food that is on the same plane as the other grocery store foods. It contains a lot of dye that really can affect the GI system (intestinal tract) and skin, and dogs can develop allergies to the food just like they can to plants and other things. Good brands would be the following: Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Any Grain Free Foods, and Hill's. There are other good foods as well but not typically the ones found in Walmart or the local feed store.
#2. I do not like Beneful, but just because a dog dies does not mean it is the food. All these symptoms people describe I see on a daily basis in all kinds of dogs eating all kinds of food. Animals get sick just like people do!!! It is my job along with veterinarians to help discover why they are sick and how to treat them along with providing compassionate and quality care. Not every dog that gets sick is sick as a direct result of what they ate. Large breed dogs are considered Geriatric at 7 years of age and small dogs are considered Geriatric at 8-10 years of age. Dogs have to go through health changes just like people. That being said, if you have a 19 year old dog that suddenly gets sick, it is most likely not going to be because of the dog food. Not to say it can't happen. Cancer (i.e. Tumor), also, is not going to be caused by a food change.
#3. I am so sorry for all of those who have lost pets in such terrible circumstances. I had to assist with a euthanasia of a favorite patient today who was sick and I understand your pain. All I ask is that everyone does not jump to conclusions and start a mass panic about a particular brand. Again, I would prefer people change dog food to something better simply from a nutritional standpoint and if it turns out that Beneful does have issues then you will be ahead of the game.

Since the loss of her I've been so Depressed. I always wanted the best for her and I thought that this dog food seem to be but now I'm wondering if feeding this to her was the death of her. He was getting sick all day everyday, and did not eat for 3 days straight. He was also very hot to the touch and even urinated while lying on his blanket on the couch (he is completely potty trained). I took him to the vet and they wanted to keep him and hook him up to intravenous to get medication and food in him. I could not afford this so had to take the outpatient option and hand feed him small amounts of plain chicken and give him lots of medicine. We've been feeding our dogs this product for about the past 10 years and on December 31, 2014, had to put our 15 year old Shih Tzu pet to sleep after suffering from kidney and liver issues. Is it possible that this product could have affected our pet's health in the destructive manner leading to the demise of her health? Her passing has been hard to deal with having her for 15 years, because she was not just a pet but a member of the family. I hope that there will be some action taken to protect the health of animals that we care for, after all the quality of care for pets is as crucial to some families as it is with ours. What we put into their bodies is very important and should be monitored to promote and protect their health!

I was crying and hoping he wasn't going to die on me.
We took him to the vet and the vet said he was obviously underweight, and really dehydrated. When he was asked what it may be that is causing it all he said it was an internal infection and gave us antibiotics and medicine for his dehydration. We were also told to stop feeding him Beneful and put him on puppy chow to help him gain his weight back. Now I know why my Lab was sick!! Because of the dog food we were feeding him is POISONOUS!!!! I am a very very upset dog owner and will NEVER again buy Beneful. Or possibly Purina altogether.

We have been feeding our two labs Beneful for years. When our first lab was about 1.5 years old, she started having seizures. We talked to the doctor but he said labs are prone to seizures so we did not think anything more about it. Then when she was 6 years old, we adopted our second lab. Both were on beneful and then the second lab started having seizures as well. We tried to figure out what was common about both but chalked it up to both of the being a lab. Then when our first lab was 10 and a half years old, she was diagnosed with a HUGE kidney stone (the size of a business card). She had to have it removed. I was worried that at her advanced age she might not make it.
Three weeks after surgery, we had to bury her as she never fully recovered. My heart broke, I never really thought about the food being the problem until I started reading all of these issues. We have since taken the second lab off of Beneful and started feeding her Hills Science Prescription Diet food and she is a totally different dog. No seizures and she is acting like a puppy, full of energy and spunk. We now have another lab and we refuse to put him on Beneful. Hopefully we can prevent any health issues at bay and can give them a chance at a healthy long life. My husband and I adopted a puppy and brought her home in January 2014. She was an active, playful and very energetic girl. The shelter had given her Iams Puppy food while she was there and recommended we do the same. She seemed to grow tired of it, so in June, when she was 7 months old, I began mixing Beneful Puppy formula in with the Iams. Shortly afterwards, she began having bloody diarrhea and vomiting about every other day. We took her to the vet, who thought she might have some type of intestinal parasite. She sent a stool sample off to the lab, and gave her a dewormer and antacid/probiotic pills. This helped a little, but she was still in distress.
We took her back to the vet, who gave her another dose of the same thing, even though the lab results for worms were negative, plus some antibiotics. She would have good days and bad days. We finally took her to another vet, who also thought it could be parasites, but switched her to Prescription Diet I/D food. That was 2 weeks ago and the diarrhea and vomiting ceased. I can only hope she has no permanent damage.

I fed my English Bulldog Mugsy Beneful dog food his whole life. Around September of 2014 he developed a large tumor on his chest. I took him to the vet and at first they thought it was an athletic injury. After several vet visits and the tumor swelling to the point of actually rupturing, they did surgery to debulk the mass and to close the wound. By late November the wound still had not closed and he bled constantly and I had to keep him bandaged 24 hours a day. The vet scheduled another procedure to close the wound early in December, I dropped Mugsy off in the morning at the vet so they could prep him for the procedure.
Around 10 o'clock the vet called me and told me that they had taken X-rays and Mugsy had lesions all over the inside of his chest that had spread very rapidly. So they stitched him up and sent him home with me. They told me that he would surely die in a short period of of time and there was nothing that could be done. So for the next few weeks he got treated like a king! Then on January 1, he passed away quietly. He could no longer breathe. He was 6.5 years old and was completely healthy until the last of his life. He was a very special dog to me and I felt like he suffered a fate far worse than he should have and that his time was cut short unjustly. We had used the Beneful dog food since our dog was 1 year old, using science diet for the first year per the breeder. We have an 11 year old shih tzu. After about 7 years, he got sick like parvo 2 different times. After taking him to the vet and being monitored overnight and using IVs, the vet told us he thought it was the artificial colors of the beneful dog food. He had bleeding in his stool for many days, dehydrated, lack of energy and appetite. It was the same effects they had with parvo.
Having fought parvo as a puppy, we knew this. It cost us over $500 to save him then. When he got sick these other 2 times, the vet tested him for parvo both times, and he tested negative. He had to be kept and medicated and fed by syringe. We almost lost him both times, and spent over $500 again. So we begin researching and found that we would only feed our dog brown dog foods with no artificial flavors or colors. After this all came out on the television today about the lady in west Texas, I wanted to share my story. We almost lost our baby 2 times before we realized what it was! Both times costing us money and even more, almost losing our precious pet. My 14 year old cocker spaniel has been eating Beneful for most of his life and about 2 years ago developed a terrible wheezing cough & the vet could not figure out why after several tests. Since then he also vomits constantly, usually yellow egg-looking stuff or white foamy or clear but sometimes it would be huge clumps of undigested food.
A couple of years ago I took him to the vet to get his teeth cleaned so he wasn't supposed to eat past midnight (because he would be put to sleep during the procedure) so I put his bowl up after he ate around 6pm the night before and the vet said he threw up a humongous amount of undigested food (this was the next day) and I said "But he hasn't eaten since 6pm yesterday" and he didn't believe me! He just said "Well he must have gotten into some food somehow" and I knew my dog just hadn't digested the food but I just assumed he was developing bad digestion due to his age, same with the cough. I can't believe changing his food never even occurred to me.
Recently the cough has gotten so bad it sounds like he can't get enough air. He can't breathe so I was about to take him back to the vet when my husband read about Beneful on Facebook and then it all started making sense! Just today I bought an all-natural ingredient senior dog food from PetSmart and am hoping my dog gets better! I can't believe my cocker spaniel who will turn 15 years old in May 2015 has been so lucky after eating this food for at least the past 10 years! I pray that permanent damage to his liver and/or kidneys hasn't been done.
About 6 months ago he had a seizure and his eyes were rolling rapidly and he was paralyzed - it was so scary. It was the middle of the night so I couldn't take him to the vet but eventually he fell asleep then woke up normal. There were also about 3 times in his life where his back legs would be temporarily paralyzed and I never could figure out why. Even though this new dog food is very expensive our dog is worth it! If I would have known Purina dog food - which makes almost every kind of dog food - is junk and the Beneful brand in particular is POISON, I would have fed my dog the expensive dog food from day 1. I am so sorry to those who have lost their pet due to this poison and I thank God my dog is still here after feeding this to him for so many years!

He licked the floor, tried to bite the fringes of the rugs, and when we let him outside, pawed through the snow so that he could eat dirt. We figured that he was trying to make himself vomit. We could not reach a vet, so we watched him that night and he seemed better in the morning.
Several weeks later, still holding onto this practically-full bag of Beneful, we tried Sandy on one more meal of it, and the same strange behavior followed. I emailed Purina and explained the situation. Their response was that their product is perfectly safe and healthful – blah, blah, blah - and assured us that whatever problem our dog had was caused by something else. After hearing on the news about others experience with Beneful, I threw out the remaining food and started him on Iams. He has had no further problems and is also back on his favorite chew sticks.

We have a 3 year old Australian Shepherd. We switched to Beneful dog food and right away noticed him starting to vomit. It progressively got worse. One morning I got up for work and he was lethargic, couldn't hold himself up, and when he tried to walk his back legs just wouldn't work! My husband took him to the vet immediately. IV fluids, antibiotics, they weren't sure if he would make it through the night. The next morning we're allowed to visit him and miraculously that afternoon he was able to come home. We were the lucky ones...so many others were not. Please do not feed Beneful to your pets!!

The past 3 weeks he began to drool profusely, vomiting, lethargy and dark orange urine indicating to me there was a dehydration issue. He wasn't eating & we stopped feeding him Beneful altogether. We purchased a new food and after several days he appears to be doing better but still having some bouts of excessive drooling. I Am convinced it was the food that caused these issues and saved the UPC label from the brand new 31 lb bag before throwing it in the trashcan! All of Us, consumers, cannot be all wrong in coming forward with our concerns for our pets. I am not looking for monetary compensation outside of the price I paid for the bag of food. More importantly purina needs to be held accountable for their shortcomings.

When I adopted Chloe almost 7 years ago it was suggested that I put her on Science Diet as that was what she was started on. I tried it for months and sometimes she would eat it and days when she wouldn't. I tried all kinds of food and of course she still is picky. A few years ago I started making her food per my Vet. She did so well and was healthy. With the decreased time I had that it took to make it, I found it easier to just buy Beneful. I thought it had all the right ingredients for a healthy diet. She started doing okay with it, but not long into it she would have bouts of Vomiting, Diarrhea, Lethargy, Weight Loss and would foam at the mouth. I had her at the Vet so many times and they would do all kinds of tests x-rays, medicine, etc.- they wouldn't be able to find anything. Then the shaking would start, the vet thought it was her having pain. We couldn't pick her up without her growling or moaning.
He put her on ** for pain and stomach problems. I started boiling chicken and barley mixed with vegetables for her and she did a lot better. Once I went back to Beneful, it started all over again. When the article about Purina and Beneful was posted and after reading all the information other Dog Owners posted, I have stopped feeding her any Purina products. I hope I stopped in time that she won't have any Liver or Kidney Problems. She is doing much better now- no groaning or growling and seems to be happier. Whatever it takes I will make her food out of fresh food and vegetables. What if these Purina Products are causing our Babies to be sick and Die. I have a 6 yr old Maltipoo that was healthy up until last year when I started to feed him Purina Beneful. After 8 months of eating Purina Beneful, he started getting very sick. He was a playful and active dog. We started noticing he just shut down completely, not playful or active anymore. His eyes got really cloudy and red. I took him to the vet and they ran a lot of tests. Of course his vet bills added up but I had no choice. I just wanted him to get healthy. He was prescribed some eye drops and meds. He got a bit better. Then 6 months later, he got sick again. This time he is blind. I never put 2 and 2 together and think it was his food that he was eating the whole time. After I read a lot of consumers' complaints about how their pets got really sick and sadly some died then I realized my dog exhibited the same symptoms. I rarely post bad review about a company until now. Please do your homework and stay away from Purina Beneful.

Then her pup who was 11 years old started to lose his strength in his back legs and couldn't get up, peeing on himself and not eating or drinking water for two days. Took him in and they said he had liver cancer, this was after the second bag. They died within two months of each other, after feeding them Beneful. We had a little Jack Russell/Rat Terrier. We got her as a puppy and she was my wife's best friend. She took her everywhere she went and everyone in our little town knew who's dog she was and her name, Jess. We fed her puppy chow for the first year. In the second year we looked at the different dog foods and thought Beneful would be a good product. She ate Beneful for six years.
She did have some health issues but none of the Vets we took her to could come up with a answer. They asked about her diet, but who could have known that a major company like Purina might be selling a toxic product. Well the story is sad because in her seventh year "Jess" became ill and we took her to our local vet. They gave us some medicine and sent us home. The next day she became much worse and we went sent to a specialist. They told us unfortunately too much damage had been done to her kidneys and the best choice would be to let her go. Jess went to heaven the next day. We still miss her.

I've fed my Chocolate Lab Beneful dry dog food for several years now, various flavors. The price was reasonable and he's always loved it. But he developed some symptoms over this past year that were very consistent after meals. He would drink large amounts of water whenever he ate, then within 15-20 min would act like he needed to vomit - coughing up saliva, with a sound almost like someone with "dry heaves". It would subside soon after it started.
So I tried some other brands of dry food sometimes, but would stay with the Beneful usually 3/4 of the time. Sometimes he had symptoms as stated above, sometimes not. At first I thought he was just making himself sick somehow by drinking too much water. Then I finally related it to the dry food. For a month now he's been eating another brand (higher priced) exclusively and I haven't seen these symptoms return at all. I don't know what the problem was with the Beneful food but I know that with the alternative food, the symptoms have disappeared.

As I read all these reviews, I'm horrified that other people have had the same done to them! My Biggie was 120 lbs of the most special, kind-hearted, loyal American Bulldog you could ever wanna meet. He was only 5 years old when he passed from chronic kidney failure, less than two months before his birthday. I was pregnant with my second son when he was put to sleep at our home in my arms, so that he could pass on with love and comfort after all that suffering and weight loss!! That dog was hardly a dog, he was our family. I couldn't figure out how this could have happened. I walked him everyday and we played all the time and I fed him well, so I thought.
I considered exploratory surgery because I was praying that it was a blockage that could be fixed, but I decided to go with blood work first because I felt the surgery would be too invasive if I was wrong. Sadly I was very wrong and the blood work showed chronic kidney failure. I realize now what killed my dog. It was the dog food that I trusted and fed him every day - Beneful. Thanks for killing my best friend, Beneful. I will find a receipt and post it as soon as I do.

At Christmas time I switched to Beneful Puppy food to give my pocket book a break (Big mistake). I am certain that if I hadn't been feeding mostly homemade food with the occasional bowl of Beneful I would have lost my puppy. She started throwing up. Once I found her weak and disoriented, I thought she'd gotten shocked by the electric fence.
I couldn't figure out what exactly was going on with her, she'd been healthy and growing since I got her at 8 weeks old. I am generally suspicious of consumer products for this very reason, I've seen a large number of recalls through the years. So I omitted the Beneful all together from her diet and within a day or 2 she was back to normal and been fine ever since, happy and healthy although she did seem to stop growing. So I rushed him to the vet where he was diagnosed with Pancreatitis and liver damage after exam and x rays and ultrasounds twice of his stomach. In & out of doctor's office 3 times for injected fluid into his stomach along with injected antibiotics & sent home with liver meds & antibiotics. He started to get better after all these treatments & then got sick again. Took him to the ER was admitted for 24 hours with IV fluids was sent home got sick again. Back to doctor next day only to be injected with IV fluids again and sent home on meds to get better again.
It has now been 2 weeks and he is better but on prescription diet, low residue very expensive food for life. His stomach can no longer stay well on Beneful dog food as he was on when he got deathly sick. I have spent over $3000.00 on treatments and vet visits, hospital visits, tests and prescriptions along with a life long illness. I still have a small portion of his Beneful food to be tested for poisonous ingredients, but not sure where to go with this information and dog food to be tested.
My concerns are subjected to me after reading about several other dog owners have experienced the exact same problems in the exact same time frame as I have with my dog. The ingredient propylene glycol, a substance that is toxic is listed in ingredients is an automotive antifreeze component. I am sure this is not all a coincidence. It seems to be a reality. Could it be just a batch gone bad in this time frame or is it new and to be continued? I don't know but I'm not willing to ever feed my dog this food again as he has stomach & liver issues now for life. I have no proof of purchase other than some of the food itself saved in a sealed bag that can be tested.

Our pet sitter said the older dog had been sniffing her and pulling at her hair. We took her to the Vet and after a blood test and ultrasound it was determined she was in liver and kidney failure and had pancreatitis.
The Vet said she had all of the symptoms of being poisoned, anti-freeze, chocolate, raisins?? We racked our brains and could not figure out what she got into. We had changed our dog food brand from Kibbles and Bits to Purina's Beneful Healthy weight dog food because we thought it would be better for them. $1,400 later and 2 days on an IV our little girl dog started to improve. Our 12 year old Wiemeraner has been on Beneful her whole life. We tried to switch her to a premium dog food shortly after we adopted her at when she was 6. The premium food gave her diarrhea, so we went back to Beneful regular that her previous owner said she was on. Later, she began to gain weight so we switched to the Healthy Weight formula. She has had no problems until last year when she got sick but the vet said it was most likely some fatty table scraps. Another time she broke out with hives which the vet diagnosed as likely caused by peanuts that I tossed to her. I think at least some of the problems dog owners have reported may be attributed to other causes, as millions of dogs go on living on Beneful every day.

We had a completely healthy dog and cat. We had started feeding Beneful to our dog, because we had thought it was a good food (our cat would go over and eat some of the food from his bowl too). One day, our dog started having seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, went lethargic and died before we even had time to drive him to the vet. It happened so quickly. A couple of seconds after he died, blood started pouring out of his nose. About a week later, the exact same thing happened to my kitty. I couldn't figure it out. Now that I see this exact same thing happening over and over to other people who have fed their animals Beneful, there is not a doubt in my mind that this food is the cause of my animals' deaths.

I fed my dogs Beneful "Healthy Weight" for years. They started to develop cysts or tumors on their chests between their front legs or elsewhere on their bodies (I figured it was from old age). I had not realized that these cysts that were showing up on my dogs' bodies were from the dog food. One day I went online to find coupons for the dog food and was shocked to find other people with dogs with this same issue. I immediately stopped feeding them Beneful and switched over to Honest Kitchen. After a couple of months the tumors started to decrease. Later one dog died of old age. The other one the tumors are still decreasing although not all the way gone. When I am in a store and see people buying Beneful I will tell people my story and suggest they do their own investigation .

We started feeding our Mini Schnauzer Puppy 13 weeks old Purina Beneful Puppy food. She loved the food, but after a week she started shaking, being very tired more than usual and having diarrhea. All about the same time as starting her on Purina Beneful Puppy Food, she had received her second round of Puppy shots. We thought that she might be having a reaction to the shot as some puppies will do, the diarrhea didn't stop so we took her to our Vet, she was checked for Parvo, the test came back negative.
The Vet said it might be stress related as we just traveled from Nevada to Texas. We were sent home with a anti-diarrhea RX for her. We have given her almost the entire RX for the diarrhea with no luck. After a week medicating her with the diarrhea RX, now she has started vomiting. So that is what lead me to inquire about her dog food we were feeding her. We hope that we changed her food in time and doesn't have any long lasting effects that can't be reversed.

We purchased a bag of Beneful Healthy Smiles treats. I fed one to each of our 8 month old Labrador puppies. Within 15 minutes, one of the pups could not walk and was very lethargic and disoriented. The other pup was wobbling around when trying to walk and disoriented. We decided to start filming the puppies, so we could warn our friends about this toxic treat that was only the size of my thumb, and what it could do to a 50 pound animal immediately after ingesting it. After about 30 minutes, the pups were trying to walk around, but could not stand on their own for almost an hour.
There is a class action lawsuit filed against Nestle-Purina, because hundreds of people have lost their beloved pets to this toxic food & treats. I have fed my Boxers Beneful for quite a few years. Over the years I noticed that they both became more and more lethargic. Based on their age and not knowing anything about this issue, I contributed it to age, until one day I came home to my oldest boxer staring aimlessly into a vacant closet. He would not move. He would not respond. Just stood there. I had to carry him down a flight of stairs to get him to go outside, which he normally did rapidly due to being inside while I was at work. Once outside he urinated and immediately collapsed.
After a very frantic drive to the Vet, they immediately told me that he was bleeding internally from his stomach, and my only choices were to put him down or pay for a 6000 surgery that may or may not help him. After seeing all of this in the news about Beneful, I realize that he had the symptoms. He had multiple seizures in prior years and the vet could not tell me why or find anything in all of the testing that was done. He also developed the diarrhea which worsened over time (again not knowing of this situation, contributed it to age).
I continued to feed Beneful to my younger boxer until I read about the class action suit. I instantly change to IAMS dog food. Instantly, my dog has developed a much healthier appetite and is much more active. It has only been 2 days on IAMS. Needless to say, I am relieved at the progression of my dog, yet utterly disappointed and upset over the loss of my older boxer. Just in these last few days, the complete difference I see leads me to believe that this was all due to the food I was feeding them, Beneful.. Please do not feed this to your dogs!!! I had to learn the hard way.

He has developed large patches of missing fur that turned black and blue and were on his under belly as well as his face and legs.
I took him to vet and had to give him antibiotics and bath him with a prescribed shampoo daily. I stopped the Pedigree and Purina and he is finally getting hair back and spots have stopped increasing on size. Want to know which dry foods to avoid. It is sooo sad to think a dog is hurting and has no voice to tell you this until it gets to point where an owner can visually see signs of something being wrong. All products causing problems need to be reported so owners know what to avoid. Can you offer me a list of such things to avoid so my dog stays healthy? I've been pleased with my five dogs being on Beneful overall but I do feed them my own homemade "stew" at times usually using turkey and vegetables. However, once I bought a bag from Sams Club and there was a piece of metal like off the machinery they use to manufacture the product and it was about the size of a quarter. I complained by phone to Purina and they asked me for the information on the bag - there was none. I think maybe this batch was not supposed to be sent out for sale and has not been marked.
I think they knew that they'd had a problem and that one of the bags in that batch had a piece of missing machinery in it and it was an error. It could have killed one of my dogs if they had eaten it. No, I don't trust Nestle or any other large food conglomerate at all. Their focus is profit and let's face it nestle was boycotted for years after encouraging women in Africa who did not have potable drinking water to bottle feed their children rather than breastfeed so they could market nestle milk to them and the only water they had to mix the formula was the dirty pond water and babies were dying. Anyone else remember that? I think it was in the 70's. Anyway with five dogs it's difficult to stretch to buying another brand than beneful. I'm considering "Blue" but it is exorbitantly expensive. How can I though in good conscience give my dogs propylene glycol in their diet. It's poison.

A week after I began feeding them Beneful, both dogs became ill. They were going in the house as if they had never been house trained. I was irritated but not overly concerned. Then each began to throw up and have severe diarrhea. I made a vet appointment but they could not be seen until the next day but during that night, Jessie gave up. She would not move and was in much discomfort. I took her into the ER and the vet asked me several times if she had gotten into something that could have poisoned her. I knew she had nothing but Beneful, her food. I lost Jessie that night.
The next day I took Jeter into the vet. Again the vet asked several times if he had gotten into something that might have poisoned him. He was throwing up, had diarrhea, would not eat, but was trying to drink water. Today, two weeks later, on antibiotic and an acid reducer, he is not well but holding his own. Then I hear about the class action suit where other family pets have had the same symptoms while eating Beneful. Purina.. say what you want... He has been lethargic, he would not eat or drink, could not go to the bathroom, was having trouble holding his urine in the house (so unlike him), and blood in his urine and stools, started having trouble getting up and down, moaned in pain while he slept, developed lumps on his sides, began to vomit, and just sleeps constantly, and not comfortably. He is only 7. He trembles in his sleep. The vet had to put him on IV fluids and gave him antibiotics, as well as medication to try and boost his appetite. He is only eating chicken and rice now, very little, but still will not drink. He is still in pain, and I am taking him back to the vet today.
He has been eating Beneful, originally Healthy Weight, then we switched to Healthy Fiesta. I just don't understand how they can keep this on the shelves when it is clearly making our babies sick? I am watching him as he tries to get up, and it is such a slow process compared to his usual self. I am praying that we caught this in time. We are so scared for him right now, especially after reading all of this. How can they continue to sell this? They are poisoning animals everywhere. It is not one specific breed, or one specific area of the country, this is widespread and they know it is happening.
This is disgusting and I am horrified and scared for him. My initial vet bill was more than I could afford. X-Rays, blood work, medication, examination, etc., and he needs to go back. I will do whatever it takes for him, but after reading all of the others, I am afraid of the costs this will entail. He is our family, and we need him with us. ALWAYS READ AT LEAST THE 1ST 5 INGREDIENTS LISTED ON THE DOG FOOD. THERE ARE GOOD FOOD BEING SOLD BUT I CHOOSE TO FEED MY DOG A RAW DIET. After reading a few of the reviews it made me sick. Please please if you are able to switch your dog's or cat's food to a raw diet with no grains once you start to see problems with your pet. In acute disease, such as a toxicity, the signs occur suddenly and can be very severe. In chronic kidney disease, the onset may be very slow and the signs fairly nonspecific, i.e., the animal is "just not doing well."
Some of the signs are nonspecific and may be seen in other disorders such as liver or pancreatic diseases, or urinary tract disorders not involving the kidneys. Signs may include: BAD BREATH. Changes in the retina (turns yellow). Painful kidneys (touch under, if they let you between the rib cage and back legs) if they tense up or it looks bloated or they cry out go to the vet immediately! Watch for increased thirst and urination. Increased water consumption (polydipsia). Increased urination volume (polyuria). Decreased urination (oliguria). Lack of urination (anuria). Voiding urine during the night (nocturia). Blood in urine (hematuria). Decreased appetite (anorexia). Vomiting. Weight loss. Lethargy. Diarrhea. Hunched over posture or reluctance to move. Poor or unkempt hair coat.
Have the vet do blood work (a chemistry panel) on the kidneys. It can happen quickly, depending on the age of the pet and how bad off the kidneys are you might be able to save them. I was able to save my dog before it got any worse now I watch her closely. Good luck I hope this helps. Feeding your dog food that YOU TRUST is not always easy, but what help me is feeding her a raw diet. At least now I KNOW what is in her food. I did not think I could do it AND I thought it would cost more. Not only was I wrong but her health has improved greatly. Some vets will tell you not to switch but for me I will NEVER go back to can or dry foods again for any CAT OR DOG AGAIN.
It's just turkey meatloaf with peas & carrots plus other healthy foods HUMAN GRADE I just do NOT COOK IT FOR HER. Even her treats are what I make for her because of her allergies. I do not put grains in her food. This can happen in humans and pets. Kidney & liver failure can be a slow process or can happen within days. The problem is once it starts. Cells of the kidney cannot replace or regenerate themselves as they do in the liver, lungs, bone and skin - it is lost forever. I hope that you can catch it in time. Make some changes and prolong their lives.

In December I noticed her eyes seemed to start glazing over fairly quickly. I took into consideration her age (she's 7). Then, I realized her hair as well seemed to be shedding a bit more and out of the blue, a mass appeared on the bottom of her stomach. As a concerned and responsible pet owner, I took her to the vet. They informed me she had a hemorrhoid that started pushing and showing on her abdomen.
Since then, the hemorrhoid started to break open her skin and the smell from the wound (I clean it multiple times a day) has gotten worse. She has been lethargic, not eating (even though I switched her again) and sick more often than not. I have cried multiple times because the vet is getting way too expensive for the trips and medication. She is one of my children and I for one, feel you need to step up and take responsibility for the injuries/deaths caused by your product. How would you like it if someone came into your house and started poisoning your family? Take acknowledgement that animals may be pets to some but are family to many others. I did notice diarrhea off and on but didn't think much about other than an upset stomach. One wouldn't think that they would have to worry about a name like Purina that has been around for years.
About a year and a half before Achilles was put down, he went blind which I now believe was most likely caused by Beneful. He developed high blood pressure and eventually his body began to shut down. I tried to make him as comfortable as possible (continuing to feed him Beneful) which I did not realize I was killing my dog by doing so. I couldn't stand to watch him suffer any longer and the decision was made to have him put down. I believe Achilles was taken way too soon!

We started feeding our 7 year old border collie Beneful last summer, which was purchased from our local grocery store. During late fall of 2014, our dog started vomiting after he ate. He would eat the Beneful and then go for his water and drink and drink. Within 15 minutes he would throw up. We thought we might be over feeding him, so we cut back to no more than 1/2 cup at a time. Still ate, drank and vomited. We switched to Purina dog chow complete and have had no more incidents. I had not thought much more about it until I saw all the problems others were having. Our dog seems fine now. I think if we had not switched, he might have gotten worse. Actually, the fact that he vomited it up probably kept him from getting sicker.
