I have been a business owner and I have been reviewed by Angie's List members since 2008. I have to say that I have acquired very good clients and I have A ratings with AL. It is my understanding that members of AL pay to get reputable reviews and the ability to find good contractors to service them, it has never been that Business owners pay to be on AL.

Angie’s List sold out… My business has been in operation for over 22 years. When AL first initially offered marketing sales I paid for a years’ worth of ads with absolutely no results. My business has an impeccable reputation in our local community. Prior to advertising, I had almost 20 ratings with AL and everyone of them were an A. Since then AL calls 5 to 6 times per year soliciting for my business again. Every time they call I tell them that I advertised previously and received no results. About a month ago they tried again telling me their platform has changed and they are going free to consumers. Basically if I don’t “Pay to Play” they will remove my business listing or put me at the bottom of the list even though I have a great reputation and have been in business for over 20 years.

Angie's List business model changes have turned a homeowner network of neighbors helping neighbors into a contractor pay-to-play business. When searching for a contractor, I noticed that the only listings that showed reviews or descriptions were the businesses that paid for placement. Those that didn't pay are relegated to the "poor mans" area without any description or review number. I am disappointed with the changes and now need to find a new service to help find reputable contractors that has at least an ounce of legitimacy. Shame on you Angie for letting this happen. Your company has come full circle by taking us back to the era before Angie's List - which was the original reason for starting the list in the first place.

As a member of Angie's List, I signed up for their promotion and what I found is following: Reaching customer service of Angie's List is completely useless. Whether it is a chat or email or telephone. They never follow up with you. The contractor who was supposed to provide the service never rendered the service. Why? I asked for the insurance info. The painter didn't have the insurance. I was provided w/ auto insurance which is completely useless if someone is doing the work. I reported on Angie's List the review which was critical of the painter and Angie's List to list them in the promotion (they still do it today - 8/26), the website never published my review.

I decided to sign up for the "free service" element of Angie's List to check reviews and see if the service was beneficial. I was never a paying member and glad I never took that step. I was looking for an asphalt contractor to replace our aging driveway. What I got when trying to read reviews was interesting. A contractor, listed favorably on other free sites, but, listed in their database could not be reviewed. It kept pushing me to 3 contractors that were rated A by their service. My research had identified that the 3 listed had some issues (via other sites) and I was frustrated not being able to review the contractor that had provided a quote.

I am the top rated handyman business on angie's and have been for many many years but I won't pay to advertise so they are going to bump me down to the bottom and list bad companies ahead of me because they will pay. What was a good company with a good idea now is a ripoff money hungry company that doesn't help consumers but now helps bad companies that can't get by on word of mouth good work! Angie's is the biggest fraud consumer ripoff out there!

Paid for a membership, found an electrician - had cable rerouted. After cable was rerouted, there was a problem with a shower leaking. I did not put two and two together that the shower leaking into the ceiling was a result of the cable rerouting. Had tiles removed from floor of shower to view the shower pan and it was determined that the cable was going right through the shower liner. Angie's List would not allow the bad review of their electrician. I never used nor trusted Angie's List after that experience. My advice is to stay away.

I need a roofer badly due to raining weather and leaking roof. I paid PayPal for silver member on 8/11/2016. I had problem signing in. Send email to memberservices@angieslist.com. My email said it was undeliverable to recipient. I asked friend and finally found a roofer. I filed a dispute with PayPal. PayPal told me to contact Angie's list. It was in vain. PayPal is not that good for the benefit of the consumer either. I send a total of 4 emails. It all came back as deliverable. I finally found their phone number to call. I told them that since there is no way that I could sign in, and request for refund. They said that they do not refund. I just have to use it for a year. So I went to website. I found it is useless. I can get better information from local Pennysaver. Please do not ever subscribe the useless services. Do not waste your money.

As a business, we get multiple calls per month to advertise with Angie's in order to put our business in the spotlight. We do not advertise our business on Angie's List. 3 top complaints: We received a negative review. I researched all the information provided in the review, I could not find the customer or address in our database. I'm not sure if someone accidentally posted to the wrong company or if someone was deliberately posting a false review. When I called A.L. to discuss, they said if they cannot reach the reviewer, they cannot remove the review. Eventually it was removed;

Caliber Constructions initial visit to my home was on 6/2/16, when Caliber's sales representative Tim ** came to assess home repairs and provide me a quote for indoor/outdoor projects. During that visit Tim ** inspected my roof and informed me that he could immediately see I had severe hail damage. Tim ** assessed the damages and quoted me $12,505 for all repairs. Tim then told me I needed to call my insurance agent and advise them I had severe hail damage. I did so trusting in Caliber's expertise to identify hail damage.

Crappy service. Only free now because HomeAdvisor came along with free service, and Angie's List couldn't compete. Beware even giving them your email address, because you'll get spammed forever, even after you repeatedly ask to be taken off their email list. I hate this company. Use HomeAdvisor instead.

I purchased 1 hour of electrical work. It took over 4 days to get a response, and I only heard from them after giving them a "F" rating. I am still waiting on a refund of 69.00. I hired a real company to do the work. I am waiting days for Angie's List to respond...still waiting.

To keep a long story short, Angie's List will upsell you every year when you have to reinstate your account. And not by just a couple dollars. More like 75% higher than what you paid the previous year. My recent experience is that I was sold something I didn't want and my monthly charge has gone up from $166 a month to $366 a month. Angie's List also took $800 from my credit card to charge me for a past due bill I knew nothing about. I'm sure I'm confusing anyone reading this but that is the issue. Angie's List makes it so difficult to understand their policies so they can whack you for more $$$. The agent I work with on Angie's List, Brian tries to be helpful but his hands are tied too.

I was a paid member for a couple of years. During that time, I was REPEATEDLY contacted by them to review businesses I'd never used. I told them this, but would receive an identical request within a week. I finally called them and told them that, their knowing I hadn't used the business but they wanted me to review it anyway, made me distrust their entire business. After all, at that time their big claim was that each business was reviewed by someone who had actually used their services. NOW, I'm receiving requests to "renew" my membership or lose all my information, including the legitimate reviews I did perform on businesses I had used. Their current, copious advertisements state that NOW their service is free... and yet, they still want paid memberships... or else. They are simply not trustworthy. Period.

As a company we receive 10-15 calls a month from them asking us to advertise. We have told them over and over we are not interested. They in around about way have always threatened to list us as closed for service. Today they left a flat out threat, advertise or have your listing stopped. We will never do business with these people. The only thing we hear or read is bad.

I was with them yrs ago when you had to pay to go on it... It wasn't good. There was one review to a Dr office that was good so I went and it was a horrible experience. I was stuck with it for 3 months. Now she says "join for free" so you waste time to fill out the information. Can't do anything without paying crap!!

Angie's List has a real bait and switch mentality when it comes to their clients. For starters, this statement they make about no business being able to pay to be recommended on Angie's List is false. Second, I hired a business to come out and give me a quote from their site. The business gave me a quote for over twice what anyone else had quoted me, and I had 4 quotes. Third, for business owners, (like myself) they really scam the business owners. They tell you that if you get good reviews and ratings, you qualify to buy advertising packages on Angie's List, as I noted. They sign you up for about a year. 3 Months or so into your advertising package you paid for, they tell you they made a mistake in how many reviews you need to qualify. Then, they keep your money, and cancel your ad package.

As the owner of a construction company I was advertising for free on Angie's List. After numerous phone calls from them they talked me into signing up for paid advertisement so I could be seen more efficiently. They scammed me out of $3,000, promised me things that never happened to business owners. Save your money, it's a scam. To homeowners looking to have work done, go to Google.

New Angie's list Job Profiles - This is a joke. Asks some of the stupidest questions that have nothing to do with work history, but keep sending you emails until you block them or jump through all their stupid hoops. Waste of time and very annoying - don't fall into the trap and answer 1 of their questions because it will never end.

We wanted to let people know that we had the best service given by the above mentioned company. They came on time to see the job; gave us the estimate also when promised. We decided to work with them and cannot be more pleased. The job was started when scheduled, done and completed before time to our complete satisfaction. They did what they were supposed to do and then some! We are very glad to recommend them very highly.

Angie's List is completely unethical. They allow any review to be posted without investigating the author of the post. As a small business owner, it makes it very difficult to maintain the good reputation that has taken years to build.

I am a self-employed contractor who recently got out of Angie's List. Why? First, I would receive numerous phone calls from them daily trying to get me to buy advertising. It got to the point where I had to block their numbers so I could actually do some work. Second, I rarely go onto their website but happened to one night and saw a terrible review about my business from someone who I have never known or been contacted from. Probably a competitor. What irked me was Angie's List never notified me that there was a bad review. They just left it up for others to see. I felt terrible because I only had excellent reviews. So goodbye Angie.

What I haven't experienced is the mythical "Angie's List member discounts" from ANY of the providers that I've contacted. Of all the providers that I've contacted through Angie's List, I've only found 2 that I felt comfortable enough to hire. One of those I hired was extremely good. The other got my business due to lack of competition in its field. I could have found these providers without Angie's List and for free.

I have a small business of cleaning services and they call me to get a good deal with them. The salesman never told me I have to give them 40% of each job I get hired plus the monthly payment. They have the weird people there. This is a big scam. I get out of them contract because I can't read very good. I ask the manager to tell me all what it is. She did not. Verbal agreement has to be the same of writing. I lost money, 2 cars, plus I got bad bad reviews from them "customers". I had one. He is always on prescription drugs. I don't feel comfortable sending my females employees with people like that. I think this is two way street.

I subscribed to Angie's List about a year ago and used a couple of their providers with good results and left positive reviews. Unfortunately I contacted a provider that had a terrible outcome. When I wrote a negative review I was advised that my contact information would be sent to that provider and I had to agree or I could not leave the review. In the current world environment I do not feel safe in leaving a negative review and having my contact information sent to the person it was left about. I could understand if they gave them my zip code but giving them all my contact information is downright scary. The world is scary enough without sending someone ammunition and my contact information to seek revenge. No wonder they have such great reviews. Anyone in their right mind wouldn't leave a negative review knowing that the person it's about is going to be forwarded the review and the reviewers contact information.

I would not recommend Angie's List. I signed up a few years ago and they do not give you adequate notice that your "automatic annual renewal" is going to occur. I had 24 hours notice to cancel and only a vague subject title in the email they sent me to alert me my membership was up. I realized I was automatically re-upped and charged approximately 50 dollars when I received my credit card statement. I emailed them and was told I could send another email requesting a new renewal alert for next year that would give 30, 60 or 90 days notice. There was no offer to reimburse me for this year's membership that I do not want. The offers Angie provides via emails are ridiculous and are not useful - for example $99 for a roof inspection, when you/I can get this for free from any decent roof contractor you can find from word of mouth or Yelp.

Like many others, when I signed up for Angie's List I did not see that buried in the barrage of words, ALL accounts are automatically on auto-renew. I logged in twice in a year, did not find the platform useful. I find word-of-mouth among people I know is still better. Didn't even know my account had auto-renewed. I don't think they even send an email receipt. Months later, I realize it has auto-renewed, contact Angie's List & they REFUSE to refund any of this year's membership. They fall back on "it's in the agreement". They KNOW people don't see that. CEO is from McKinsey, so they're just wanting money. And good God - how to stop getting their stupid emails pleading for me to review service providers?! No, I don't pay for something and then put in volunteer time to keep the product relevant. Super shady money grubbers. Avoid.

I signed up with AL 2 weeks ago and have had nothing but frustration since. First, it took a week for my coordinator to call me and I had to send an email prompting her to call me. Then we only had problems with the website, and I could not view my ad, the coordinator sent me a screenshot, but on the side of the screen I could see she filtered the results to make me look as if we were appearing higher on the page. That was the last straw, I felt so swindled, I let her know I want to cancel and she said there is 35% cancellation fee, NO!!! I will not be paying this or it will go to court, I never signed a contract to that, I reviewed the agreement over and over again!!!

I think the premise of Angie's List while interesting is a scam to fleece the contractor and consumer. I cancelled membership 2 months after looking and evaluating their contractors (definitely more expensive ). Going thru my billing they have been auto-renewing my Paypal accounts for a couple of years! I think this company is unethical both ways for consumers and the contractors - Avoid, you have better options.

Do not join Angie's List! They only want your membership money, and do not care about their customers beyond that. Their "HASSLE FREE" membership, is definitely not so hassle free! Once you buy a membership, you are stuck with it for a year. They have a 100% no refund policy! They offer absolutely no refund, full or partial. No matter how long you have been a member. It may only be 2 days. Doesn't matter. Maybe you have not been able to find any deals that works for you. Doesn't matter. Maybe you are just not happy with the program or exactly how it works and even if you have not purchase anything through them.

Signed up for a one-year advertising package for over $1K with early termination fee of 30%. Promised more referrals for work than I could handle. Nothing else I had to do. Several months went by and no calls. I left 5 messages for a return call. Finally had to stop the monthly payments before I got a call and only to tell me it was my fault no business, and AL tried to sell me more advertising. They said they would do an internal investigation to find out what was promised and if promised more than I received then no early termination fee due. I got a call after the "investigation" saying no early termination fee cancellation. Go ahead and sign up with AL if you feel lucky and desperate. I'm currently having great luck with Thumbtack for a fraction of the cost.

I paid for angie's list and once I had access, learned it was not at all useful to me. Yelp reviews & recommendations were less biased & more helpful, so I didn't even log into Angie's list again after a couple attempts of it being unhelpful. Today I get notice that they've deducted money from my PayPal account & contacted them immediately, expecting my account could be canceled and my money would be refunded as requested. I was told they canceled my account BUT COULD NOT REFUND ME. I was never sent ANY email notification that this acct was even nearing renewal & that was definitely not an accident. They told me all accounts are set to auto renew & give no warning that they are charging you - SOUNDS LIKE A SCAM IF I'VE EVER SEEN ONE. Not at all a legit company - AVOID.

We paid for a membership that allows us to check any business in the country for one fee. For months now, we have not been able to use the site, as it gives us businesses in Wisconsin and Minnesota or God knows where when we are located in Florida or Rhode Island, or California. (We have multiple residences). Over 11 calls to customer service has just resulted in wasted hours on hold, promises that the site would be fixed, and agreeing that the situation is intolerable. That upsets me the most. Someone must have told the agents to just agree with the customer to settle people down, but it makes me more and more upset.

Very disappointed with what Angie's List has become as a result of its owners' determination to monetize it. I became aware that AL reviews are no longer what you could call disinterested when my painter, a man who was referred to me by a friend in the trades, remarked that he had paid -- a pretty stiff fee, we might add, to get himself posted near the top of AL's listings. Charging these guys to be listed in a resource that's not unlike Google as a kind of search engine (only more local) causes them to raise their prices, or else cut corners. It's not like a painter doesn't cost enough. Thank you! One could do without that particular type of artificial and unnecessary inflation.

I recently received an auto renewal charge from Angie's List. If you have ever used Angie's List - you are automatically signed up for auto renewals. You probably don't know that this is the practice. Any business that automatically "auto-renews" your membership as a default is scamming you. They rely on you not to notice.

Twice after reading A rated Angie's List of companies, I have no reason or idea of an A rating! Two days ago after Angie's List emailed me a list of A rated plumbers, I did choose one. Nightmare! This company is horrible. They nearly scammed me of nearly one hundred dollars for a service call. Any charges from this drippy company will be disputed! The customer service is rude and sarcastic, among many other negative attributes! I had to contact another plumbing company and pay prices which were expensive, but the work was completed. After this terrible experience, I would definitely NOT consider Angie's List ratings or take your chances! Good Luck! If my husband wants to continue the subscription, he can pay the fees. I would rather spend my time and money elsewhere!

We began receiving reviews which were mailed to AL. My assumption is: It is then up the staff of AL to enter these reviews. How else do they get online to be read, if they were mailed. They misspelled words so badly the sentence didn't make any sense. And to make matters worse, it even read like "he bed me." Later, I offered suggestions for how they might fix it (since they seemed clueless). Unbiased, but at least a proper sentence. After about 7-8 emails, of which most were responded to in 2-4 days, some not at all, they said they were unable to change anything. Then they sent me an email about "what to do if you receive a negative review." The review was very positive, the client loving the work he received from the doctor. They were and remain unwilling to correct their stupendously bad entry. Extremely dissatisfied.

I joined Angie's List, it said nothing of not receiving your membership dues back. I found a service that I needed but they were 55 miles away. By the time that they responded, we had someone else do the work and did not need them. The $99 we paid them, could not be collected from Myrtle Beach Gutters. They said we had to get it back through Angie's, which said they could not return it to us.

I have a home inspection company. I have an account with HomeAdvisor and made a profile with AL. I put the review links in my email signature for customers to leave reviews for me (btw I have a 5 star/A+ rating). AL contacted me and I agreed to a phone meeting. They of course start their conversation with "You are agreeing to make a decision today by taking this call". Really!? So we go through the whole spiel and when I ask if they can lower the price so I can try it out what do you know it goes from 5k a year to $200 a month.

Too bad, Angie's List is no longer usable for me. I too was told that the problem where I cannot narrow my search to miles within my area was a glitch, weeks ago. It still does not work. I really like Angie's List until it became this "in your face" website trying to sell me "offers". They have ruined it and it looks like I will have to go through what sounds like another awful experience with them of canceling my membership, which they are auto charging my credit card for now. I don't remember even giving them permission to do that, but they just did a couple months back. It's like 12 bucks and I had used it several times before, so I let it go. It's now becoming the unusable rip-off site. All I need is to find someone to install a faucet locally, not offers and lists of folks too far away. Reviews have also been made harder to read now.

After filing a complaint with the BBB, Angie's List provided a full refund.

Here is how it works. Somebody from Angie's List will contact you. A smooth talker will let you know that you are now eligible to advertise on AL. They tell you they will promote your business by advertising your goods and services. You will pop up on internet searches and social media sites like Facebook. They tell you a rep. will contact you to set up your "storefront". And that your business will alternate with other business for the top advertising spot. The sales rep you speak with is very confident that advertising with AL will increase sales. They also tell you it will take 2 to 3 months for your advertising to start lifting your sales. You decide to go for it. You agree to a $245 a month advertising campaign.

It is impossible to get in to find someone to do a job for you. You have to pay. Why doing it if you can simply Google anything you need. Also if you want you can pay them and leave a review. Don't trust this scum.

If you are looking for a contractor do yourself a favor and look for one in a different place.

I bought a subscription for my mother in law to help her look for doctors. She didn't use it much, so, I initiated a chat through their website to cancel it 1 week before the renewal deadline. Now, a week later, they charge me anyway. So, I've been sitting on hold on the phone to tell them to reverse the charge, so I don't have to file a dispute with my credit card company. In general, I'm happy with Angie's List service in my own town, but they make canceling your account a nightmare. If they leave me on hold much longer, I'll have plenty of time to file the dispute with my credit card, and find other places to leave negative reviews.

Signed for the service and every time we search for a service their FILTER option only shows up for seconds not giving you time to narrow the selection and forcing you to look at all businesses in that category. So pretty much you are paying for more or less what you can find for free. I even called the company several times and the only answer "is a glitch." Decided to cancel and guess what can't do it over the phone. RIPOFF.

Our company has advertised with Angie's List for many years. Over the last 3 years or so the leads have trickled down to nothing. We have been getting zero leads and paying more than ever to them. They even send us leads we have to additionally purchase for a fee from non-Angie's List members. We tried this and paid for the lead and it was completely bogus. Sometimes the customers don't even call you back! So we obviously cancelled our agreement because we were simply not getting anything in return for our advertising fees.

My small service company decided to advertise on Angie's List. A person we didn't even provide service for put an "F" review on our company because we could not service the town they lived in. Then this same person during the review added a slanderous / defamation of character word to the review for no reason. Angie's List refused to take the review off even though we never serviced this person and refused to at least remove the slanderous / defamation of character word. I've required a refund for the remainder of my term and will never advertise with this company again. I've also contacted my attorney.

I am a small roofing company. I am on HomeAdvisor. Angie's List made their program sound so much better and offered so much FALSE HOPE!! I did everything I was asked to do and then some. I have not gotten a single call out of them let alone new customers. As a matter of fact when I ask my customers from other sources to leave a good review for me on Angie's List they send me emails that say sorry but I'm not playing their game at Angie's List. It makes them mad because they have to become a member of Angie's List in order to do so and jump through a bunch of hoops to get there. When you call your rep they don't answer, when you call their supervisor he doesn't answer and doesn't return your calls even if you're polite as God can possibly make someone.

I searched for a mechanic. Got their page trying to sell me access to their reviews. It had some sample reviews (with business name hidden) for "local mechanics in (city where I searched)" with names ("Cindy **" for example). Then I searched a sentence from the review on google and voila! Got their exact same pages with mechanic reviews, exactly the same words, but in completely different cities... Liars!

We were sold on the $250 a month package and had a team with Angie's List. We built a relationship with our team and they (I thought) understood our needs. We are a small business in a big market and were happy to hear about the e-commerce portion of our package. It took weeks to figure out what promotions we were going to use. After seeing many samples we finally decided and sent the information in only to get a call that the e-commerce team member had been replaced with someone new. Our new "team member" didn't have any background on our company and didn't even know what line of work we are in. After (I thought) we got everything straight she sent me a proof for what our "store fronts" would look like. EVERYTHING WAS WRONG!!! When I let her know I just got attitude back. So I called my business relationship team member only to be told she had no idea what was going on and would get back to me. That was 2 days ago.

When I spoke to the salesman on Angie's List he told me that there were 7 thousand plus searches last year on Long Island for carpet cleaning. I decided to take an ad for $250 per month based on those numbers. I just spoke to a sales associate who advised me that in my territory only 720 searches were done for carpet cleaning last year in my territory. This is a huge fabrication of the truth and I told the sales associate to kill the ad and find out exactly what the salesman said to me. When he got back to me he said that the cancellation fee would be waived and they would refund some money back to me. He went on to say that they weren't admitting anything and that if there is any doubt about what was said Angie's List will find in favor of the customer.

I have used 2 of Angie's List recommendations and all three experiences were terrible. The first were electricians that tried to charge me $5000.00 for a job that should have been $2000.00. Thank God I did some research and did not hire them. The second was an appliance repair company that totally ripped me off. I should not have hired them, but I desperately need to have my clothes washer fixed. They charged me $300.00 for the job and after some research I found that the parts should have only been less than $100.00 and they charged me for 2 1/2 hours of labor and were only here for 15 minutes. Also, the technician was condescending and rude. I am not sure of the name of the Electrical Company, I think it was American Electric, the appliance repair company was All Appliance Service. I will never use Angie's List again. You can't trust it and I am sure these vendors pay to be on her list and then you pay to use it. WHAT A SCAM!!!

I was called by an Angie's List salesperson and I agreed to a monthly ad with monthly payments and that if I was unhappy, I'd simply stop running my ad (At the tune of $1200 per year). I wasn't happy as I got no calls so, I decided to stop running the ad. I was told that I agreed to a 1 year contract and if I decided to not pay for it, I'd have to pay $420 for a cancellation fee or I'd be turned into collections and have my credit affected. I specifically told them on the phone that I would only agree to a monthly agreement as in the landscape business, there is no reason to advertise year round.

In reviewing my credit card statement, I noticed that Angies List automatically renewed my membership for a new year at $9.99, without my permission. That's a no-no!!

I am very dissatisfied with Angie's List, LLC. I now understand this company was once founded on local businessmen, work ethic and great referrals, but since it switched hands it's all about the money. I would not recommend this pay to play, high pressured marketing strategy. As a small business owner, I would like to see a return on my investment. I have not received any potential clients, one phone call or email request for my services. I wasted hundreds of $$$ dollars since I was talked into paying a monthly fee last year. Looking back on it now, the commissioned sales rep from Angie's List was very persistent on getting me to join. He literally started out at 3 times the cost, then hounded me every week until I made the mistake to believe him that this would easily pay for itself and be a no-brainer. He talked to me like I was his buddy and he was doing me a favor.

DO NOT purchase this list. I signed up for her list during a remodel 3 years ago. I found only amateur and unprofessional workers, despite "good reviews". I agree with many of the other reviews. Once signed up, it is extremely hard to be removed, if not impossible. I paid for a one-time, temporary subscription thru PayPal. 3 YEARS LATER, they are still charging my account! I have contacted them countless times over the past 3 years to be removed from their list (emails, paper mail and payment). They just ignore me and keep charging! I have never had such a hard time with such basic communication with a company. STAY AWAY from this money hungry company.

When I first joined Angies List I was remodeling my house and was very excited about the opportunity to find recommended contractors. But the only good reviews I ever was able to post were for people whom I had found BEFORE I joined Angies List. All the others -- two handymen, computer repairmen, electricians, drywall repairmen, HVAC companies, landscapers, etc -- did very poor work and, in some cases, had to be asked to leave before even completing the jobs for which they were hired.

My business closed down 3 years ago and I STILL cannot get them to close out my account. It is still appearing on the internet under Google search and I am getting daily phone calls from people who "saw my ad on Angie's list". HORRIBLE customer service and shady business practices.

Not a very honest company and very money hungry. When I discovered that companies that paid the most get at the top of their list. I felt that they were being dishonest because they are also charging us the consumer for the site. It not solely based on the best companies but based on money they can put down. So you potentially hire someone so so based on how much they paid. I have quit my subscription and trust the Google review that seem to more honest and not how much some company pays.

For a company that claims to help consumers, we need to watch out for Angie's List. Forced sort order to display ads at top of results is reprehensible. And they make it VERY difficult to cancel or change auto pay on account. I give Angie's List a grade of "F."

People, please be aware AngiesList.com DOES NOT screen people. People who are thinking about hiring constructor, roofer, plumber, electrician, etc, by looking at Angie's List MUST check criminal record before hiring to avoid nightmare. I found name of constructor who has criminal record and known to take pay before he finish job and stop coming. When I checked constructor I hired on Angie's List, Angie's List is giving him top rating. Why Angie's List make people to take chance of hiring criminals and have nightmare?

To begin: I have tried repeatedly to contact AL via telephone at a myriad of numbers listed on their website so I may cancel my account. ALL numbers are answered with a recorded message that the offices are closed for a "company function" to "celebrate the Memorial Day Weekend" and they will re-open on Tuesday. HELLO! It is March! Also, I just discovered that VENDORS PAY to BE ON THE TOP OF THE LIST. Meaning, the list of vendors is NOT ranked by reviews, but rather, how much is paid to Angie's List. Total ripoff.

I joined Angie's List a year ago (3/6/2015), partly to help evaluate moving companies. I put a note in my calendar to contact them in time to cancel the renewal. I attempted to do this online, but could not. I emailed them on 3/1/2016. They responded that I did not have a live account. I reconfirmed on 3/2/2016, doubting that this was the case and giving them more information. Again, they said I had no account. Again on 3/2, I contacted them. I had just received their printed magazine. I asked how I could receive this if I weren't a paying member. I provided all the information on the label. On 3/9 I received the following: Your account expired on 3/6/16 and renewal attempts will be made. Once again I told them that I wanted the account canceled and no charges to be made. I doubt they will cancel and may have to notify my card company of their fraud.

I usually do everything myself but for a sometimes I need an expert (in this case someone to cut some granite in my kitchen). I couldn't find anyone useful. That is fine. Not everything works out. But now Angie'sList keeps sending me catalogues and they won't let me unsubscribe. When I asked to be taken off, they placed me on hold. After 20 minutes, I hung up.

I own a company and signed up on Angie's List. I had a A+ with the BBB for over 20 years. I have a C rating on Angie's. Why? Because a woman called my office for a quote. I answered her back with an estimate. Told her I will wait for a reply. She never replied and wrote a bad rating on my business. Without even letting me give my side of the story. She said I didn't show up for the appt. I never made an appt with her. She requested a service that I didn't need to have an appt. I know my business gets messed up with a big brand business. Also used to get bad replies to the BBB for a business with my name in Richmond. But Angie's List didn't even send me her complaint. I got one review and it's a bad one of a customer I never had an agreement with. They won't answer my emails or take her complaint off. Go with your local BBB. They are out there for consumer and business owner alike.

I subscribed to Angie's List. I found the services of highly-rated contractors (rated by Angie's List) did not match the very poor performance. I tried to cancel the subscription as the service was useless to me. It was virtually impossible. I was on hold FORTY MINUTES. I spoke to a rude operator who said there was no other way. I could NOT cancel online. Then she told me they were having "technical difficulties". Then she said the slowdown was "lunch". I demanded a supervisor. She put me on 30 minutes of hold. Strongly advise you avoid.

My subscription was suspended because Angie's List thought I was abroad. I had no access for 3 days. When you pay for a service, contact me immediately. Don't provide a message that says "your account doesn't exist" for 3 days. I was trying to do a major renovation project but if you can't do searches for 3 days, what's the point? I will not be renewing and I will never give my feedback on service providers. Why help them when they shut you down at will?

I signed up for AngiesList in 2015. After a month, I realized I didn't want the service and I didn't agree with their political stance. I decided to cancel my subscription. William ** from AngiesList sent a confirmation email saying that it was canceled and wasn't going to be renewed in April 2015. I was balancing my account and found a charge from AngiesList for $6.99 on 2/25/16. I called to ask for a refund and they couldn't find my account with my email. When I brought up the email cancellation from last year, I was asked for my name and state; somehow they were able to find it. The account is canceled hopefully and a refund is coming. I hope that no one else encounters the problem of a canceled account renewing. Thanks.

I joined Angie's List when first moving to Florida. The landscaper I hired through them was under the influence of something and all the plants he installed in a row were crooked and diseased. I was afraid of him because he was obviously drunk or high when he did the work so did not report him to Angie's List. Then I hired an HVAC company through Angie's List to do my regular maintenance. After being sold on some questionable "building code" upgrades, I checked their Better Business Rating and found the company that had an A+ rating with Angie's List had an F rating with BBB. Never again will I subscribe to Angie's List.

I purchased carpet clean service via Angie's List (AL). They never showed and AL did not refund me. I ended up hiring another service to do the job. AL just took 29.99 out of my account and I ended up w/ an overcharge. They refund 29.99 but not the overcharge. I do not recommend AL. In fact I encourage you avoid AL.

I hired a contractor based on Angie's List certification. The contractor was totally dishonest, substituted materials on me, cheated me, left my house in a mess. I contacted Angie's List about my problem with the contractor and they did nothing to help me. Their warranty is worth nothing!

As a business owner and member for 2 years 6 months into the 3rd year, first 2 year's great. Then Angie's List going into 3rd year kept pushing the big deal and wanting 30% of said deal. Meanwhile putting my store front closed down without my permission, leaving me with no sales. And still their monthly payment was paid on time now for 2 and half years. And now they send lead jobs at a very high price and still no sales through my store front. And I can't reached corporate. Only sales reps. trying to push the groupon. Woops I mean big deal... Oh by the way I have been in business for 28 years serving Jacksonville Florida and by far Angie's List is the champ at bait and switch advertising.

I am so disappointed in Angie's List. Beware!! After spending $18,000.00 over the course of two years we cancelled our Business Membership. Needless to say: Two weeks after cancelling we received a bad review from an unknown "customer". Please read details. "Review Date: January 13, 2016, Member: Stephen **, Category: Remodeling - Kitchen & Bathroom, Services Performed: Yes, (More Weight is given to a review where work has been completed.) High price., Share on Band of Neighbors: No." We contacted our salesperson because we did not recognize the reviewing customer's name. After 10 days of Angie's List "attempting" to contact the customer, this was the response we received from our sales rep...

I have many very satisfied customers who recommend my work on high-end additions and remodels. Over past 12 years I have a repeat clientele... so I got repeated solicitations from Angie's List. I finally gave in. I sent in many of my top rates from customers... had to send Angie's list their reviews to go up in her ratings. Come to find out she doesn't really rate their reviews until they pay for a membership. My reviews lay buried until they pressured my customers to join. What an embarrassment. I literally set up my faithful customers to be pressured to join her list! Doesn't matter what they said. It wouldn't make top of list until they joined. What a scam. If she was looking for top contractors w/ unbiased reviews he didn't take those views until they registered as paying customers!!!

I was call by my account rep saying "I need to help you bury those bad reviews"? After seeing, and searching through my customer point of sale system. I reply, "those are not my customers. I don't want them buried, I want them removed". My rep said they would check into it and get back to me. That never happened even w/ a reminder. I asked for a refund but again no reply. If they can't police their own Angie's List members, how can their reviews be trusted.

I'm very disappointed that a lawn care service that I gave a break to when they were a start up, got too big and put me to the back burner. My lawn was not mowed for three weeks and I had people yelling out "mow your lawn!" I was humiliated and hired another company and then SOS showed up out of the blue. 3 weeks too late. They sent me a bill that I would not pay and then posted a large notice on my house saying OVERDUE BILL. To me it seems Angie's List will add any company as long as they pay with no background check. It is not just me, the attorneys I work with said they were very disappointed with this company.

I signed up for the "unbiased" reviews only to find out they are hiding negative reviews. This resulted in my going to a dentist with a "A" score only to have my tooth ruined & now I can no longer eat on that side. Attached are photos showing I posted a "F" review and another one that shows it's now visible to others.

I was misled about my listing and immediately called Angie's List to rectify the situation. I was informed that my ad would stop and I would not be billed. A year later I received a bill from a collection agency. Angie's list claims it's a cancelation fee ($1400 and they would agree to accept $500) in the letter from the collection agency. It sounded as though I negotiated with them when I was never even contacted or billed. As a contractor I pride myself with offering personal service and integrity. If a contractor used these types of tactics we would be labeled as crooks. Who protects us from sharks like Angie's list? I am disputing these charges and want to warn others of their shady business practices.

I've had the experience of other reviewers. Angie's List would not allow me to cancel my annual subscription on a pro-rated basis and then charged me again the following year. It's so ironic that Angie's List operates under the same deceptive/negligent practices as the vendors it says it protects us from.

I signed up for Angie's List on November 19, 2015. It did not provide information on the market I needed. I called customer service that same day - November 19, 2015. They confirmed the problem and, at my request, cancelled my membership. One problem, they continued to bill my credit card. The customer service agents are great when you first call, but they will not let you cancel.

I was searching for a private detective in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Angie's List verified that there were 2 out of 12 that were favored. I paid the upgraded fee and then paid an additional fee for services that were suppose to have been included. THERE WERE NO DETECTIVES IN OSHKOSH. I called Angie's List for a refund complaining about false advertising. The representative challenged me on what I reported. I had taken a screenshot of the false information and was glad to email direct to representative. My $ was refunded. Unprofessional company. I still have the picture that verified false advertisement! So if you want to fine this company, I'll help!

Angie's List lets anyone who is paying for their services post whatever they want and I had a client post a really bad review about my company and I've been in business for 30 yrs and I'm appalled by Angie's List not taking this seriously. This company (AL) is all about profit and nothing else.

My account was set to auto renew on 12/26/15. Unfortunately I did not realize this until I saw the charge on my credit card on 12/27/15 for $29.00. I logged in and contacted them. I was greeted by customer service agent and whom I told what I wanted to do. She asked me why, I told her I did not need the service anymore. She responding saying there were movie tickets and restaurant discounts that I could use, and that she would offer me a 20% discount to stay. So far standard procedure if you and to cancel membership. I checked out what was available and saw it would not be worth it to me, so contacted an agent again and told her what I wanted. She said she'd be glad to set a reminder to come up in December of 2016 so I could cancel it then. I said "no I wanted to cancel it now," she said "ok, it is cancelled and you can can use the account until 2016."

I bought the big deal. ESCO was supposed to come out and install an electrical outlet. They cancelled the first appointment. The second appointment they said the deal would cost extra, so I did not do it. I asked Angie for a refund. She said the 30 day limit was past. The first cancelled appointment was within the 30 days. If ESCO had showed up then there would be no problem. Not my fault. Angie is trying to keep my money.

I have been a highly rated and frequently reviewed contractor on Angie's List since 2008. In 2015 I have 100 reviews, an "A" rating and have won their "super service award" every year except one since 2008. I am a licensed painting contractor but my listing was as a home repair company and in late 2015 was contacted by Angie's List and told that because I was performing work outside my license trade that they were revoking all my super service awards, deleting my company from category searches and that the only way customers could find me was by a company name search. Well, they followed through on their threats but in addition to that they deleted all my reviews as a legitimate painting contractor and my company name no longer shows up in a company name search. In other words they removed all trace of my company from Angie's List after an eight year relationship because of a trade licensing violation.

I bought a deal for a air conditioner check for spring. He did not do the maintenance that was part of the deal and told us we needed a new AC unit. He said it would not last the summer, unit was 11 years old at the time. I told him I was going to get a second opinion. Second AC person said all was good. Then I said what the first guy said and he said he was trying to get me to buy an AC that I did not need. Call the first AC company and told the boss what had transpired with the repair person. He gave me a refund and also paid for the second AC company that came out. I put a bad review on AngiesList and also turned him in to Angies department of ethics. Well the next month in their newsletter pamphlet he was still advertising front and center. You can't trust the vendors that advertise with her.

Former 2 time member. Quit the first time when I tried to construct a review of a painting contractor that just completed a job on my home. I could not find company anywhere on AL, called AL and was told that the painting company was "out of my subscription area" so I had no access to display my review in my area. I informed AL that I just used the firm so how could they be out of my area? I joined again and then quit when I tried to research a gym two blocks away from home. I was unable to locate "any" gyms, called AL & was informed that for another $5.99 I could upgrade my subscription to include "health care related facilities." Quit again & will not return - it's all a scam! Areas are very small & limited in nature forcing the consumer to purchase additional layers of coverage. Will admit that AL was very prompt & professional in returning my annual fee.

I purchased two basic memberships, one for me and another for a family member in Philadelphia. I purchased two big deals for $149.00 each for $300.00 of tuckpointing on October 31, 2015. One deal did not show up under either membership. I was told I needed to cancel the basic memberships and purchase a higher grade membership so that the representative could help me. So I agreed. He then attached the one deal to my family member's account. She called the merchant and received a very high estimate, she had four companies in total give estimates.

I own a small business and signed up. I started getting great reviews about my business from customers on Angieslist. A rep from Angieslist called me to have my company market with them and I declined. They said that if we do we would get more awareness, and sales. I decided to do this reluctantly but knew that it works hand in hand with Big Deals and Storefront deals from how they explained it to me. I spend $130 a month with them on Marketing and have had 0 calls in the last 5 months from this. I track all calls through Salesforce so we know where our calls come from or inquires.

I hired Millennium Painter in Billings Mt summer 2014. I have shingle siding. 3 months after they painted the paint started pill. When they were painting I asked them "aren't you going to use caulking?" So did use caulking, very little. The house was not prepped correctly and therefore it has bubbled and continues to peel. You may wonder why I haven't complained until now. To be honest I live alone and was afraid to write a complaint. I paid $ 3,400 and now it will have to be painted again this next summer. I do want to mention all of the men that worked for him were very pleasant and worked hard. The owner just did not prep it correctly.

My wife just cancelled her account with Angie’s list. The confirmation email reads in part as follows: "Thank you again for chatting with us today. Here is a receipt confirming the cancellation of your Angie's List membership. Your account will not be renewed, and you can continue to use your home membership until it expires on 9/29/2016 and your health expires on 11/15/2016.” It was signed by Francis **. How would YOU like it if some stranger told you that you would expire on 11/15/2016???

I signed a 12 month contract for about $6000 in online advertising to be listed on the first page in my business category. After about 60 days and 0 calls, I went online and realized that my business was not only not on the first page, but not on there at all (it was even before I started advertising). I made my rep aware and it was fixed in 48 hours, but they refused to give me any type of account credit for the failure. They were also supposed to pay me $25 for referral, I sent 7 and they refused to pay me for them, without getting my clients to call them to verify that I sent them. I would not bug my clients like that. I called my reps manager (Jason **) who never returned any calls or requests to have him call me.

To start, Angie's List is totally unprofessional and generic in many ways. I am a business owner that is listed with Angie's List. I called them today requesting that they remove my account from their site. I spoke with supervisor Christopher ** phone number **. This guy was very unprofessional and was a complete jerk! He told me it was impossible to remove my account, that my information will be displayed forever. I told him I didn't want my business displayed because I've changed occupations. He told me I signed the terms and conditions and there's no way to change it. So the endless spam emails and phone calls will continue because Angie's List refuses to remove my non existing business. Really??? What kind of business would treat customers this way? Please before using Angie's List, research all other options.

All Asphalt Maintenance, Ann Arbor, no came out. For estimate, concrete to asphalt quoted 6800, wanted 4000 right on spot. And wanted me to rent equipment, jack hammer, and generator for him as he said he didn't have credit card or couldn't rent from local rental. Started busting concrete one day. Second day, asked him for insurance and permit, got nasty and said I should have asked the first day. He left job, told his two workers to stop without having paperwork. Also going, he cashed the check while I was at the rental company and he got 4000 and never came back. Had to find another to finish busting and removing the approach. Cost another 6000 for that.

I am a new business owner and after watching the "great" ads on television, decided I would create a free account on their site. I was soon contacted by a sales rep about advertising and getting more business. I was persuaded that having an advertising campaign on their site would "cause my phones to blow up." Well needless to say, I am in a contract that has yet to produce any revenue for my company. I was also told by sales, that if I posted coupons it would drive traffic my way. I again have only made Angie's List money and NONE for my company. If I knew what I know now, I would have spent my advertising dollars elsewhere.

I am a building contractor & was an AngiesList customer. What I mean by customer is I paid them for advertising which they tell the public is free. I paid over $4000 this last year because they promised me more leads for business. 4 times than previous years. I was with them for 4 years. I did not receive 4 times the business. Actually 40 times less than the previous. And there were reviews posted to my account that are from customers we never even dealt with. This company is not a good source of advertising in the construction or real estate services. What an expensive lesson on my part. Would not recommend to any other business. And the 20 leads that did come in were for handyman services or from consumers that have no clue what it cost to do business. Total false representation!!! Buyer Beware!!!

Waited over 19 months for an invoice of an outstanding balance for a work done (backsplash in the kitchen). We are not satisfied on how the billing was handled because the charges are horribly high. The tiles we selected are way under budget because the area is less than 25 sq ft. The $499 that was advertised was up to 40 sq ft. Basically, all the materials needed for the job could have been covered with the $499. But, we were charged an arm and a leg for a very tiny job thru Angie's List. It would have been more reasonable to get someone else.

I tried to sign up for Angie's List so I could research home-security companies for an elderly family member. I'm a military service member and I'm overseas with no dwelling back in the U.S., so my mailing/billing address is an APO address (For those who don't know what "APO" means, the military delivers its mail to overseas members through its own internal system, but we are assigned a U.S. zip code because our mail is sent through the normal the U.S. Postal Service up until it transfers the mail to a military center in New York.).

Angie's List has posted multiple reviews about my company that were very negative. Once I learned of these reviews I verified they were not my clients and were with clients of a different company with a similar name. Once I contacted Angie's List, they admitted they had made a mistake and were unwilling to make immediate corrections.

We used Angie's List after much hesitation earlier this year (2015). We had a few clients contact us saying positive things about the program and decided to try it out. Our problem came when a review was posted by someone we had never even heard of, let alone performed any work for. This review, since we were new to Angie's List and only had 4-5 reviews, dropped us to a bad rating and caused a breach of contract, making us liable for the entire remaining bill (which they billed my CC for immediately).

When I was in the infant stage of being a business owner, a customer had suggested I list my company on Angie's List. Before that, I was advertising on Craigslist. After a little persuasion, I agreed to let him put a review on me and my services. This was the best decision I could've made for my company. In a period of 6 years, I have a accumulated over 200 reviews from actual customers and maintain an "A" rating.

This is the new mafia shake down money. GET THIS. You're a business trying to do your best and some consumer decides they're having a bad day and goes off on a rant. As a business you have no way to defend yourself except for company response. In fact people can write in even if they never used your company just to complain. And after so many complaints ANGIE'S LIST calls and says they can help if you take out advertising monthly with them. WHAT MORE MONEY.. So any scam artist who wants a good rating can sign up and pay monthly and they will look squeaky clean. I KNOW WHO IS THE SCAMMER HERE but she did make 50 million dollars so she is laughing all the way to the bank in her big house and fancy cars.

For those contractor that use Angie's List coupons, be warned! I have been using them because I needed work. One of their sales rep asked me to push a coupon. I did not want to do this particular one, but we did and the customers refunded 5 out of the 11 coupons we sold that time. After selling over 20 coupons and getting only 1 or 2 refunds they penalized me and stop running the coupons for my company for 4 months. On top of that, they were taking 20% profit for each coupon you sell, and now they want 25% if I want to run the coupons. There is no money to be made in the coupons. We did it in the spring because customers end up doing way more than the value of the coupon. So, I searched and went with 2 other companies which have made changes and are providing fair services.

Angie's List is only concerned about their own business, no one else's. I was contacted by Angie's List that one of their members added a negative review. The story - we did an assessment for $350. When our schedule was too full to add their child to our schedule, I apologized and refunded their $350. This client was very upset. I read the review and saw the name of the member who submitted it. This member was NOT my client. I called Angie's List and they said it's against their policies for a member to submit a review on behalf of another person. I said I have my clients address on paperwork they submitted for the assessment that matches the address for their credit card charge.

I don't like being auto-renewed without my explicit authorization. Furthermore, they never emailed me about being auto-renewed. Additionally, the review service they provided was below average.

I purchased a deal with Angie's List and assumed that they only offer deals with reputable companies. It was a duct cleaning company and may have ruined my AC unit. When I called to complain to Angie's List they said that I had a misunderstanding on what Angie's List does. Oh yes, if I wanted them to deal with the company I would have to upgrade my membership. Apparently, companies can pay to be on Angie's List. They do not screen the company so just because it is on Angie's List, does not mean it is a good company. The only thing Angie's List does is report customer reviews which you can get by using Google. Be Careful with their specials. Avoid assuming that because they are on Angie's List they are good companies. CANCEL ANGIE'S LIST - WASTE OF MONEY.

I joined to look for realtors and there was not much listed. Then, I wanted to review a realtor but would be required to allow the realtor to respond. That realtor was harassing me already so I didn't need to stir the hive. Then I tried to look up movers, car repair and tire shops. I could get plenty of movers, but no way to search with limited search terms. Forget about anything auto related - I found my info on Yelp. Also when looking for services, the deals seem to get priority for listings, etc.

I've advertised with Angie's List after being hounded by their sales team. I was giving statistics about the amount of calls they get for my type of service. So I finally give in to the constant phone calls by sales. After a Year of advertising I only received 1 phone call? Seriously? With only two of us advertising and a promise of 30 calls per month this can't be all that is guided my way? Well it cost me almost $1300 to get one call with a sale of $45. Seems Angie's list lacked quite a bit on their end. Plus they kept trying to push the problem back on me saying I got what I paid for? Really Guys.

After finding a window installation company recommended by Angie's List, the company's work was beyond worthless and caused water to enter into my house in several places. I sent videos and photos to Angie's List and discussed them with Angie's List employees, who saw the horrible leaks in my house. Angie's List said the company was put in the "Penalty Box" after the company failed to make good on the windows and I submitted an "F" review. Now, I see that Angie's List has "no reviews" of the company on file. This is untrue.

I bought a service through Angie's List. It turns out that the business did not service in my area. There is no way I could have known this by reading the description on Angie's List. I tried to get the money back through PayPal which is how I paid for it. My request was denied because I authorized the payment. Angie's List now says that I must ask for a refund within 30 days. I did not know this. They are offering me credit $199 on another deal. Because of this experience I have asked for cancellation of my membership. I will have nothing further to do with this company. They have mislead me and I asked for the money in only 38 days. This seems reasonable to me and I explained this to them.

I pre-paid AngiesList for an air conditioning tune-up from one of their so called Top Service providers. After trying to make an appointment for several weeks with no response from the company, I requested a refund of my $69.00. I was informed that since I changed my mind after their 30-day window of cancellation that they would only grant a credit toward service provided by another one of their providers. Upon checking reviews, I see that there are four other recent reviews reporting the same. No response issue from this outfit. Actually, I'm not sure if this company even has an operating phone as each time I have called the provided number it does not answer with an identification of the company but immediately goes to a voice mail.

I cancelled Angie's List a year ago. So, today I got an email from PayPal that I had a charge from Angie's List for $9.95. I went to Angie's List and clicked on Chat. He said he was happy to cancel the subscription a year from now. It supposedly renewed TODAY. So I said that "You must refund me because it renewed today and I'm cancelling." He kept saying that he would cancel effective a year from now because I had paid for the benefits. The fellow on Chat kept me on until I asked for his supervisor. Then he said he would refund. For a "consumer company" this is unacceptable. They should be sanctioned.

I wish I had read these ConsumerAffairs reviews before signing up, because I completely agree with how useless and downright unethical Angie's List turned out to be. I think they put a lot of effort into the illusion of being consumer oriented, but at the end of the day all Angie's List wants to do is squeeze every last penny out of both consumers and companies who receive reviews without providing any real value to either. It's a shake down rather than a service.

I have several properties in different states. Sometimes I need to search for something in Seattle. Sometimes I need to search for something in Rapid City. Most of the time, the listing site gets "stuck" and will not search for a Seattle landscaper but only landscapers in Rapid City, South Dakota. You can't fix this yourself; you have to call into Angie's List and have them fix it. This is annoying, time consuming and many times doesn't get resolved. I've just been searching online using Google reviews and have had great success with this method.

I have very similar experience that everyone seems to be reporting here. I didn't even know we had reviews on this site until a negative one popped up concerned a landscaping issue that we were not responsible for as a pool company. We were hired to bury a pool and per contract the homeowner would have her yard seeded within 7-10 business days. The customer left her yard unseeded from April all the way until late June with a wet Wisconsin spring then wrote this awful review on Angie's List. I got a letter from Angie's List in the mail saying we haven't done anything and we have until such date to resolve the complaint. The email some case manager sent out to tell us about the bad complaint was never even sent here so we had no knowledge of it. I did buy and have delivered to this customer topsoil even though we weren't responsible because nobody wants an unhappy customer.

My complaint about Angie's List is simple: They charged my AMEX card for a 2nd year of membership without asking my permission. Seems like that should be illegal! I disputed the charge and AMEX credited my account.

Our plumbing business ended up on Angie's List much to our dismay. We never asked to be included on their list and certainly didn't bargain for all of the annoying sales calls we received promising that they could "take care" of our reputation for us on their site for a nominal fee. That was the first fire engine red flag. The second fire engine red flag was when I actually got to meet the kind of customers you get from Angie's List. Stingy isn't the word to describe them. Crazy is more like it. We've had negative reviews put on our profile by people we didn't even work for. Angie's List can't do anything to stop these bogus reviews where their members are free to say anything that they want about our company even if it's a lie. They will; however, move those reviews to the bottom of the list for a nominal fee.

I got ripped off by an electrician highly rated on this "service." I wrote a detailed review of this provider that to this day Angie's List has not published. This guy was a real scam but he'd been paying them for years and they wouldn't publish my review. He was a real dirtball. I made multiple calls asking why it wasn't published and got BS answers like "We've done a SW upgrade and are having issues." For 3 months? They are a scam.

We have been with Angie's List for 4 years, winner each year of Super Service award. Every year our advertising costs go up, with no additional services for that. Then this year after they tell us that no other company can offer the same big deal the same month, they allow a competitor to offer a deal for much less money (okay that is business, but then don't charge me for exclusivity). They refused to refund our money.

I was hounded for years to sign up for business (paid) advertising by their annoying salespeople. The exaggerated claims one saleswoman made to me finally convinced me to sign up. She claimed I would get a ton of work (she had mentioned how my competition had many hundreds of reviews while I had only a dozen or so due to not paying to advertise). They make you sign up for a full year probably knowing everyone would quit after their first month. Upon getting ZERO calls or "messages" in their email center for two weeks I tried to get out of the contract - of course their soulless corporate drones didn't listen to the fact I am a small business working for myself and the loss of money really hurts my family. Eventually I booked some work from Angie's list members, you need to give huge discounts for them to contact you.

Called a year ago to cancel subscription and customer service was very pleasant and agreeable to cancel and refund my fee. 1 year later they are charging my PayPal account again stating that I had a standing agreement. Don't use them, there are better and free sites for reviews. If you try to cancel your subscription, better get it in writing and ensure they can't tap your account.

I give them a 1/2 star! My husband and I joined Angie's List when we moved to Gettysburg, PA because we didn't know a soul that lived here. It has been one frustration after another...always having trouble signing in. I have called 5 times in the last two weeks because I have not been able to sign in. Finally, the last call the tech guy told me we were blocked because I had done over 100 searches?!?! REALLY! Blocked because I am using the service the way it was meant to be used?! Stay away! There are search services that are free...and just as good.

They advertise to consumers what a great service they are, however, if you are a business and want to be part of their "system," as a business owner you have to PAY to be listed and the only way to "climb" up the listing ladder is to earn reviews. They don't tell the consumer those things, nor do they tell the business owner either. I created a company account and thought I had our listing on there for over 6 months and not one call, so I decided to purchase a monthly membership as a consumer and check my listing and OUR BUSINESS WAS NOT EVEN LISTED!

I have had zero spike in my business despite multiple claims from AngiesList rep Jackie ** that the money I pay them every month is doing anything for me. I stopped payment for services unrendered, undelivered.... and their tech folks circumvented my Wells Fargo stop payment. They don't call me back. My emails are bounced back to me. Liars, thieves... predators... Would like to get with others that have experienced similar manipulation and share legal resources... Call please. I'm willing to put in the work.

I wished I would have did more research on AngiesList. I paid for 1 county for a $1,000 a year for a first placement on their site. Well I really didn't get this in return & they said I had to work to get more reviews. It seem to be that they don't work for you, they make you do it for yourself. They also wanted me to let customers buy services on their site but said I was to set this up. I didn't pay them money to jump through their hoops to get calls. O yea, then lets count all the calls I got. After 3.5 months I got one shopper that took about 35 mins of my time trying to get information out of me on how to do his own inspection. I was not happy with the service & canceled it. I stopped my credit card & got a new card number to stop them from charging my card after I canceled my service.

4 years ago we paid for a business membership with Angie's List. That membership expired years ago and we did not hear from them again. A year ago they started calling us to renew. We kindly declined. They call and call repeatedly, and email, insisting that we renew. One woman called and I told her we were not interested. She said "well I'm calling to speak with your husband, not you. I'll just call your husband's cell phone" and hung up! She called him immediately and he hung up on her. She then emailed him! THESE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY! Do not deal with Angie's List!!!

This is a great service if you do not mind throwing away $280.00 per month. After 6 months I received zero calls or referrals. I called to cancel the service. I was told that they would make changes to their strategy that would assuredly help me and my business. Nothing changed. After another two months I contacted them again and told them I wanted to cancel. For a $418.00 early cancellation fee! So they got paid to do nothing for me. All smoke and mirrors. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!

Angie's List called me in 2013 and said they could get me more reviews if I advertised on their website. I paid them $300.00 and never saw the first ad. After checking daily for nearly a month I called and asked "Where is my ad?" I was told that I cannot see the ad unless I happen to be on their website when the ad was running but to take their word for it that it was running. I said "Well just show me a copy of the ad so I can see what it looks like." I was told "Sorry we can't do that." I don't believe for 2 seconds that the ad I paid for was ever run.

Angie's List does nothing besides put money in their pocket. I talked to homeowner that we did work for that called Angie's List before to find contractors, they told him we have a D rating and don't pay our bills. Well don't know where he got the D rating for but we paid Angie's List even though they did nothing for us. The homeowner ended up hiring us after getting on the BBB, a real business website which we have a A+ rating. Don't use Angie's List.

At a friend's recommendation (who lived in another area of the country), I joined Angie's List several years ago when I was planning some major home renovations. I was not impressed, however, by the search results for various services in my area; not only were the results for contractors close to home quite sparse, but Angie's List repeatedly offers up service providers who are over 50 miles away. Yelp, Google, and word of mouth have been much more helpful. So I cancelled my annual membership. I was shocked when it auto-renewed (for another year) and quickly cancelled it again.

Angie's List sales reps call 4-5 times weekly and email constantly. I told them to stop calling me, which only lasted briefly. Talking with them about their advertising services is like speaking to a cult member who's trying to lure you into their conclave. They won't give you the information you need to make accurate decisions. They answer questions with questions and shamelessly manipulate conversations in what I now assume is an attempt to just wear you down so you'll give in and give them a credit card #. DON'T DO IT!

After receiving good reviews from Angie's customers, later I was solicited by Angie's list to pay $7500.00 to get the top spot but I declined that amount. Then they discounted that down to $1800.00 making me believe I was getting a amazing deal until I got into the big deal program. Matt which was my rep at the time offered me to be part of a roofing repair program that was offered to Angie's customers at $99.00. Never did they explain any details to the customers or myself. The customers were flooding in not giving any time to even adjust my schedule to properly get to these customers. Angie's took $1800.00 from me and never even got me one customer other than the Big Deal program which made me no profit but Angie's received 50% off each job we complete. I honestly must say that Angie's is scamming their customers.

After some not-so-nice conversations with the current sales person who would not give up a few years ago, we vowed to never pay a dime to Angie's List to be on their 'good list'. We aren't even allowed to respond to a review unless we pay them money. I have asked repeatedly that they take us off their list and they keep calling - at least every 3 to 4 weeks. How do I get them to stop calling me? Do I have to file a harassment complaint with the police or something?

An Angie's List customer wanted me to do work that has been condemned by the city. When I took the job, the Angie's List member told me that they hired another contractor to do work, then I was to follow their work with a small walkway replacement. None of the prior work was finished. When I got there, I told the Angie's List member that I couldn't do the work because it was unsafe. Angie's List stepped in, and is working outside the law. As it turns out, the member failed an inspection by the city prior to the negative review. The city listed their entire porch/deck as "dilapidated and dangerous".

As soon as our business began receiving good reviews we would get relentless calls. They were very pushy about these "Deals" in which they make money and you get good reviews; it ended horribly. As if we didn't learn our lesson then, 6 months later we got more relentless calls about being in their BROCHURE; we agreed and again it ended badly. $2,000 later, we hang up on them and refuse to take any calls or discuss ANGIE'S LIST in any way shape or form. We won't even accept any of their supposedly "free services". They make all these promises and in the end, THE ONLY ONE WHO MAKES MONEY IS ANGIE'S LIST.

This service allows disgruntled, mentally ill former clients to rant about perceived poor services. I complained to the supervisor at Angie's List and was told there was nothing I could do. The "review" was a complete fabrication and falsehood as I don't even work in the state the complainant lives in! Stay WAY clear of this company. There are many many other negative comments. Look for yourself!

I own and operate a Pressure Washing Service. I have been in business since 1982. I decided to perform a internet search for any new competitors in my area. I found a pressure washing service promoting they are accredited through Angie's List. I liked their website. So, I decided to see the quality of their work on their "Completed Projects" and whoa! There's not only one of my pics but the pic is a pic of my house in Pennsylvania. Angie's List is nothing more than a money scam. They do not check the truthfulness of the companies they verify are dependable and trustworthy. Stealing and using my pressure washing pics advertising as their completed work is very dishonest.

DO NOT believe in ANY business whom uses Angie's List as a selling point. The entire Angie's List hype misleads potential consumers thinking that they're safe & secure hiring anyone that has ratings on so-called Angie's List. Wake up & pay attention: Angie's List is a FRAUD! Help spread the word and let future business AVOID this false sense of safe testimonial.

In fairness, we got one good lead out of Angie's List - a contractor who did relatively decent work at relatively fair prices. But that is one out of four of the different businesses we've hired or met with from Angie's List recommendations. Of the remaining three businesses, one was an out-and-out scam artist (a local window cleaning company that charges double the going rate and uses non-English speaking teenagers as service people. Another was a major contractor who took four extra months to complete his project (virtually everything had to be done twice - first by the low-end providers he brought in, then fixed by professionals at our insistence).

Don't believe that contractors don't pay for advertising. I left Angie's List, because they're crooked, in my humble opinion. Not only do they charge the contractor every month, they telemarket endlessly to get more money. They frequently make promises they don't keep. Another thing that you should know is that Angie's List **NOT A LICENSED CONTRACTOR ** - that means that THEY have no liability if anything goes wrong. Wherever you are, keep your money local. Her PERSONAL assets are listed at 50 million, but I'm sure it's much more. She's taken enough of your money. In NM, what they're doing is a very fine line between tax fraud and a pyramid scheme. Because they're out of Indiana, there's no regulatory body that can audit them locally. Besides, they get the majority of any purchase you'd make anyway.

Referrals were poor. Cancellation is torturous. I was redirected to chat where I was given offers of deals to stay. They would not listen as I repeatedly said "just cancel my subscription." Finally the chat lady said the she could not cancel but she would mail a form that I can fill out. What a bait-and-switch con job.

When my clients added excellent reviews about my work, Angie's List started to call me offering a space in the first 4 spot when the potential customers search within the category and area. Of course they mislead and mis-presented me to believe this and sign a $3000 yearly contract. The listing by default is sorted by the "DEALS" and can be sorted by 5-6 different criteria. My company name shows # 8 in the default page and has no different than any other unpaid listings. Being in the service referral business, Angie's list should be straightforward and honest what they selling. I am going to try to cancel this contract if I can.

Most people believe Angie's List is an unbiased consumer resource. I am contacting your station because as a small business owner, I have come to believe otherwise. For the past few years, Angie's List has been soliciting advertising from businesses with high ratings on their website. In return, they promote those businesses. Recently, Angie's List launched a service in which consumers can call and ask for referrals. The referrals given are based not on customer reviews but on advertising dollars. In addition, those businesses are placed on the front page of the website and businesses with lower ratings are granted awards over businesses with higher ratings. This is in direct conflict to what Angie's list claims to stand for.

I am paying for search (for top 3 on rotation), now Angie's shows 7+ vendors in a single search area. My company isn't even coming up on search by closest distance in my direct address. This is an unethical business practice, not delivering what they promised. Charging vendors/small business like myself $$ and throwing us under the bus as I was not even listed in the top 3 or 4 with 82 straight A reviews. I can't get a straight answer out of my rep (Erica **) other than I can't cancel my contract for July 25th although it's not even July yet. I am tired of more evasive responses which I interpret as "screw you, we can load as many vendors as we want and your ranking means nothing on search, it's up to the clients to search for review count, rankings are up to us and/or are random".

I am continually being called from Angie's List to sign up with them. I have asked them repeatedly, probably 20 times now to stop calling me but they continue to call. I have even had them repeatedly call me back when I hung on them. One salesman starting verbally accusing me of not wanting to address complaints against me, which I have none and I'm not a member of Angie's List. So I asked, "If I have complaints against me why do you want me to sign up" and he replied that then they can wipe them out... WOW! That's when I knew I want nothing to do with them.

I own a contracting business that was on Angie's List "early on" and is a recipient of the Angie's List Super Service award for five years in a row. Early on, we began advertising on Angie's List as this is the only way to get your name to the top of AL lists. But then Angie's List started going after more and more money from contractors in order to keep a presence on Angie's List. At the same time, Angie's List wanted us to sell our services through their site, communicate with our customers through their site, and offer deep discounts for our products through our site. We received constant sales calls expecting us to all but let Angie's List run our business, and they were happy to tell us how to do that.

From Angie's List: "Not all submitted reviews are published. Our Team will evaluate your review and determine if it will be published based on our Review Guidelines." YET THEY PUBLISH ALL THEY WANT ABOUT YOUR COMPANY EVEN WHEN IT'S FROM 2011!!

I recently used Angie's List as I wanted to find a A/C repair man. The estimates I received from businesses on the site were expensive. One quote was $3000 JUST to replace duct work in the attic, not fix the A/C! I understand that businesses can move up the ratings list if they are willing to pay, almost 70% of their business comes from advertising (while membership revenue continues to decline) and in 18 years it has never turned a profit (Forbes).

As a contractor you can't sign up for Angie's List, you have to be recommended (scam). Then when someone recommends you (as a contractor), you don't get any jobs at all from Angie's List. Not even one single bid.
