Extra Space Storage put my belongings including my son's medical equipment up for auction even though I paid up for August on August 31st. Even though I have always been charged on the 1st of every month for the past two years, they demanded September's rent on August 31st and when I told them I did not have the extra $123 after just paying 2 months rent plus the $85 lien fee, Ruben ** threatened to not take the $331 payment unless I signed a partial payment agreement.

He then told me that all my belongings will be auctioned if the $123 was not paid by September 13th. Even though I explained that I was a teacher who was unemployed for 10 weeks and my first full paycheck was on the 14th of September, when I could pay, he cold-heartedly refused to work with me and said to my face "y'all people think you can always get your way." When I told him that I had been a customer for over 2 years and that he was disrespectful, he told me not to "try to use the race card" with him. I tried reaching out to the corporate office several times but the district manager David ** stood by the local office's decision and refused to address the manner I was treated. I am currently seeking legal options to retrieve my belongings.

The doors are thin. The thieves break the cheap doors. They don't lock up the buildings at night and leave storage units open where the crooks jump the fences at night to enter the open buildings. There are no cameras inside the storage units. But they pipe in music in the hall ways.

I have never been so cheated and lied to, in my entire life. I have only made ONE poor business posting in my life at 60 years old. This is the 2nd. It's takes a lot to make me angry due to cheated. This company are UT scum bags. CHECK ON THEM WITH POLICE AND YOU'LL FIND THEIR UNITS ARE BROKEN INTO OFTEN.

I suggest anyone who sees this and know what I’m talking about does the same. I have never been with a company who does this. I’m in the military I pay on time and have been with them forever. The facility I am in is nice and fairly convenient to where I live. This price jacking is insane! Please report them to every possible social media and consumer reports avenue.

Do NOT store your personal belongings with Extra Space Storage. Search complaints and reviews online for this company and bring your business elsewhere. Due to the recession, I have been storing my furnishings and most of my personal belongings, including many family heirlooms, for over seven years at a cost of over $9000, with Extra Space Storage. My belongings were stored neatly in closed boxes and I made my payments on time each month. I had the option to store my belongings in a three car garage just one mile away from this Extra Space Storage facility, but I chose to go with a professional storage facility in order to keep my belongings clean and safe.

This turned out to be one of the worst decisions I have ever made. I went to retrieve my belongings two weeks ago and due to a large leak in the wall of this facility, ALL of my items were either damaged and covered with black, green and yellow mold or they smelled like mold. The mold was so severe that the company instructed two of its employees to stop helping me rebox five of the 125 boxes I had stored there. These boxes were the most damaged and they told these employees that it was too dangerous for their health. But apparently, their customers’ health is irrelevant since they never bothered to return my calls after this decision was made.

It was clear by the extent of the damage to my belongings that this wall in their facility had been leaking for many months to years, but nobody from Extra Space Storage ever notified me. They just kept taking my payments each month while frequently raising the rates as well. In my opinion, this is gross negligence due to Extra Space Storage not properly maintaining their property. The fact that I did not carry personal property insurance should be immaterial. I have now spent over two weeks obtaining furniture repair estimates and unpacking all of my belongings, discarding what has been destroyed by mold and cleaning what is salvageable. I then have to repack all of my belongings again for an upcoming move in the near future. I expect this enormous task to take another few weeks before being completed. Time-consuming and costly in an understatement.

Finally, the most unbelievable part of this entire situation is that a manager from Extra Space Storage actually threatened me via email by stating that if I shared my experience with Extra Space Storage publicly via reviews, social media, filing complaints, etc., Extra Space Storage would take legal action against me. I found this to be a bullying tactic and more importantly a freedom of speech issue.

Both times they sent postcard with same lame and FAKE excuse about “market change”. They also raise rates in the middle of summer and winter when weather makes it difficult to move out! While I was gone I called to inform the staff that I wouldn't be able to make a payment until I got back and they sold my belongings at auction without giving me the common courtesy after going through a hardship such as a death in your family. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone ever in this lifetime.

Been renting a 10x10 storage unit for five months and paid on time. 6th month, Extra Space raises my rent 100% without notifying me and deducts it from my charge card. I call, and guy tells me they sent out a postcard notifying me about the increase a month ago. I never received it. I asked why they didn't notify me by email, text, phone or proper letter mail, and they told me they are a green company and don't waste paper, etc. They also told me a postcard is their notification process.

Totally despicable in every way. Called their corporate office many times, no return call. The guy tells me the rate will go up again in 6 months, but they can't tell me how much. I am looking for another company to store with and then I will relocate. Do not do business with Extra Space Storage. The contract they give you means nothing. Worst part: my unit has no lights and is NOT CLIMATE CONTROLLED as was promised. The lift by my unit is out of service at least 50% of the time. Shame on you, Extra Space Storage.

I was running a large storage area from Extra Space Storage in Pompano Beach (800 Northwest 31st Avenue). I went to downsize to a smaller unit and notice that the floor was ready to fall in because of termites. So I move back into my other storage and the manager ** provided me with three screws, a small sheet of plywood and her drill to fix the floors in the storage area that I had just moved out of. After investing my money and time replacing the floor the entire floor was infested with termites. While working on the floor my friend and I noticed rats running across the tops of the storage spaces. There's rat droppings everywhere. So if you plan on renting storage at Extra Space don't put any wood in there plus the rats will eat the rest of the stuff away. Bad idea to rent there no matter how nice the manager is.

So since I moved out they have hit my card twice. First time was the month after I moved out for $87.98 which is $20 on top of my monthly fee. Second time today for $66.78!!! They tell me I did not move out that I left stuff in there. Only thing left was two pallets which they provide and are scattered around the complex because if you don’t put them down first your stuff will get wet, on my side the units flood when it rains. So they have stolen almost $160 from me and are jerking me around about a refund. DO NOT GO WITH AUTOPAY WITH THESE PEOPLE, they are rude!!! For 6 years, we have been leasers of a storage unit at the Extra Space Storage "ESS" Unit located at 945 Zerega Avenue, Bronx, NY 10462-7746. We planned to remove our items and vacate the facility on April 2018. However, upon visiting the facility, we noticed Asbestos Warning Signs Posted throughout the first floor. Since we are concerned about our health, we requested a clearance note/letter from ESS and was told that an employee who pregnant and worked on the first floor was not affected by the Asbestos. ESS said that this was their clearance.

We were adamant not to enter that facility because of the Asbestos, and yet they chose to send to us a Notice of Lien and Foreclosure and Notice of Insurance cancellation requesting immediate payment of $561.20. We spoke to ESS's Headquarters and was basically told the same that they could not do anything to resolve this matter amicably and that all fees remain. I would like to state that Extra Space Storage is not genuinely concern with its customers' needs other than collecting their fees... Bad business practices need and should to be report to all consumers.

When we signed up for the 10 x 25 unit we were told that there might be an increase of 5.00 in 9 months. After 5 months we got an 18.00 a month increase due to the "market rate". After many phone calls I was told we could have a one month rebate of 18.00 but the increase would remain in effect. She also said all the units were taken and that affects "market rate". I had a friend call and they told her there were 4 units available. So I am pretty worked up about the "market rate" scam and will write the Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, etc because it is just unfair. The scam appears to be industry wide so hopefully others will write and complain also.

I've had this unit for some time now. The workers there aren't very friendly but this is quite typical in the Bronx. I noticed they don't clean that well because there have been times I've smelled urine near the units. Not entirely their fault, since human beings should know not to urinate near people's units. One thing that bothers me is I wish they had longer hours to access the gate. I work downtown in the city and get off of work at 6pm. By time I get uptown it's 7:30 and that's if the train is running correctly (which is hardly ever). Access to the gate is until 7pm Mon-Fri. So I'm left with only Saturday & Sunday to access the unit. This alone is not always feasible since these are my only two days off and can be filled with several things to do.

One particular Sunday I wanted to grab my air conditioner out of our unit because we were due for a day of high temps and humidity. The ac was located right in front so when I opened up the gate to my unit I would just grab it out. On Sundays access to the gate is from 10am-4pm. I got to the unit at 3:45pm. I went in the office to grab a dolly really quick. I've had to grab something rather quickly before and it literally takes me all of 10 minutes. The worker told me I couldn't access the gate anymore because it was closed. I was confused and explained to him that the unit is open till 4pm and it is only 3:45pm. He proceeds to tell me that at 3:45pm if you are not already inside the gate you can no longer access your unit.

I told him that nowhere online or on the sign posted outside says that. He didn't care. I'm trying to explain to him that I really needed to get my air conditioner due to the weather we were about to have and it would only take me 10 minutes if that. Again he didn't care. At this point I'm livid. I go look outside and see that the actual sign says that everyday the gate is open from 7am-7pm. Everyday!

I go online and it say, "Open to 4pm." I try and look for any fine print stating what he told me. Did I find it? Absolutely not! It says the unit is open till 4pm. So why then are the managers of this particular facility able to close it before 4pm without making customers aware of that? I reached out to the customer service team on Facebook and spoke with someone who told me that should not be the case and if the facility says open till 4pm it should be open till 4pm. Not only that they told me they would have a manager from the facility call me. That never happened! Am I surprised? Not really! Most businesses in the Bronx operate this way. They have no customer service and don't respect the customers. What's worst is they promote managers who act in the same manner.

I rate Extra Space storage minus zero. Need extra storage space? Don't rent a storage unit. They steal your property. Will first pretend they give you a deal, then trap you to lose your belongings if you get late. Extra Space storage will change hours of access without notice and lock you out when behind on payments allowing not access. There appears to be a conflict of interest exist. Staff of Extra Space storage and other storage facilities should not be allowed to inform friends or family of auctions or have them participate, nor should staff be allowed to do so. As casino employees inform me they cannot gamble or participate in tournaments where they are employed. Rude statements and unwillingness to work with a tenant when late paying and failure to inform a tenant early of payment plans and other possible alternatives seems due to this conflict of interest.

Likely staff want to auction property of tenants, for fun, sport, disrespect, entertainment or profit or all of them. I was never informed of a payment plan until I cited the Nevada law on auctions. Before I was only told I had to pay the full amount before the auction date or my unit would be auctioned. Extra Space sends notices by email that threaten to auction your property. Late fees are extremely outrageously high. Clearly the intent is to make it as difficult for tenants to recover when behind on payments. It makes no sense, except when realized as plotted stealing. Emails state not to reply to them. Emails state you made no contact to their notices, by email to you, even when you go into the office. I was told such emails are just standard emails. I urged them to change it, and make it correct.

Extra Space storage use this process to make stealing your property and locking you out appear legal, as though actual good tenants are irresponsible and fail to act timely to make other arrangements and communicate. When I ask for corporate and district manager's contact information I was denied. Other times I paid late fees and came close to auctions dates and was never informed of payment plans. Being locked out of units is also wrong. Tenants may have items they can pawn or sell and by doing so get the need money to pay their storage rent. Being denied access and not being informed of payment plans, or not working with long term tenants who have always paid as I have, is why it feels criminal and presents as a conflict of interest by local staff and district managers. It is not practical or reasonable that the trash bins are secured and not accessible. Life happens, of course it is best to pay on time.

Sure there should be some process to ensure payments. However personal and protected property can be stored in units and tenants by law should be allowed to remove such items, that are worthless to others anyway (i.e, family photos, commendations, personal items, etc.). There were plenty of sound reasons, including rudeness and insults from staff, that my requests and concerns needed to be sent to the corporate office for consideration. Instead, a tenant is told the district managers are completely in charge, when wrong, corporate does not care. Losing you as a tenant, no big thing, they care less. The more new naive tenants they get, the more chances to steal more property. Best to just not keep things. Sell or give them away, donate them instead of putting them in storage. Extra Space will lock you out and steal everything given the first opportunity. Staff can change constantly.

In the last few months there's been three changes of staff. this means there are not relationship with tenants, you are only money or a chance to steal your property. The past district manager did agree to a payment arrangement and I have explained repeatedly I mistaken the date, and due to the recent assault can pay on the 29th of this month, June. With my long history of always paying, in good faith Extra Space Storage should had allowed the payment play to exist with the change of date. That would be a sensible expectation of any rational reasonable person to have Extra Space Storage approve my request to continue with a payment plan, with the change of date from June 1st, to June 29th and all rent paid by August 1st.

Instead, completely unprofessionally inhumanely Extra Space district manager mocking stated nothing will be done and an auction will proceed as scheduled. If this is encouraging for to anyone to rent a storage unit that person needs serious mental care. You might do okay if for certain you only need a storage space for a month. For lengthy or uncertain stay don't do it. Not if you want your the property you are pay rent to keep as yours. I urge people to acknowledge these facts and demand of Nevada lawmakers to change the laws reasonable to ensure tenants are not being manipulated as victims of fraud and false advertisements. My conclusion is that Extra Space is more in business to deny access and sell property than rent units.

Buyer Beware!!! This company provides a very enticing price or new customer offering to get you into their space but once you are there they quietly start inflating your rate within just a few months. They mention in the contract that you may see a very slight market adjustment based on supply and demand however in their eyes the adjustment is always up and never down. I have two large units leased and both have seen a double digit percentage increase within just 3-4 months. After my most recent visit I noticed a large number of vacant units tagged as available and when checking online the prices has dropped tremendously for new customers while mine has continued to increase.

Also if calling to check on availability or pricing the reservation center will leave you to believe they have only one unit remaining in the size you need. I've complained once and got a partial reduction of their increase but really don't expect to see any relief from their constant price increases. Run from these crooks. You WILL 100% start seeing increases in your monthly rate once you have moved in knowing how inconvenient it would be for you to find another facility. I would encourage everyone to look at other options and sign a contract for a fixed rate that will not change. So Extra Space Storage has a different meaning for Supply and Demand... They have "Supply" and continue to "Demand" you pay more. You are being SCAMMED by this company. Run the other way.

Essentially, they told me they never quoted me $50/mo and are at liberty to raise monthly rate as they please. I'm moving out ASAP. Stay away from these crooks.

I’ve been with Extra Space Storage and another storage company for 10 years. Extra Space raises my monthly costs significantly every 5 months or so without notification. Every 5 months I have to fight to have Them put back to where it was or at least close to where my cost was. It has doubled over 10 years. That’s pretty amazing. The Other storage company when they plan on raising rates let me know BEFOREHAND. Amazing right. Its rates have gone up about 20-25% over the same 10 years. If you want to have to fight with an unethical, non-transparent storage company every 4-6 months about its new undisclosed new higher rates then feel free to use Extra Space Storage. I would suggest using ANY OTHER company.

I have been bothered and given rules regulations verbally that aren't totally the opposite of what I was told before I rented. The worst non-professional. Nothing but lies, harassment, disrespect, threats. I've only been in there for 25 days and am giving my notice. I would never recommend anybody to use this place this business. These complaints to the same all over the country. They don't care about their customers, they won't give you any paperwork, there are no rules and regulations except not to follow someone else out without using your gate code, yet they make up the rules as they go along. I say rules, they change the terminology from Rules regulations guidelines even a dress code.

Are threatened with eviction. Additionally the access to the storage units is very narrow today. There was three storage for 4 with stuff completely blocking everything and blocking me in. When I try to talk to a manager or CEO or anybody in the company they passed the buck. They change the name of the manager and say, "Oh that's the manager from the other building the other unit." It's not worth wasting your time dealing with these people. This company, the employees and management are absolutely horrible after you pay.

It will not provide paperwork for my rules and regulations. Even if you asked all they will give is a receipt. Stone end up getting played by these people or this business Extra Space Storage. There should be a class action lawsuit or I will file a lawsuit myself. I have recorded their rudeness also threats also have video. People's claim for a lawsuit against this company. It's not just hardship when you leave. But the total lack of giving accurate information guidelines receipts that in itself is not legal. Not alone threats and intimidation harassment and the upset, it's unbelievably HORRIBLE!

My business has been a customer of Extra Space Self Storage on 620 W. Edmond Road since 2013. The company went through an ownership change in 2016. The new ownership brought on a new lease agreement, which was supposedly mailed out to all of their customers. The problem is my business does not have a copy of that contract nor does Extra Space Self Storage, meaning that both parties never signed the document to make it a legally binding contract. In this new contract, they state that they do not accept partial payments. Their former contract states nothing about not accepting partial payments. I had a payment returned to me because it was 10 days late, and I had not been made aware of this clause in their new contract because the only contract that I have and Extra Space Self Storage has is the previous owner’s agreement that does not state that Extra Space Self Storage does not accept partial payments.

Anyone with good business sense knows that since there is no executed lease contract signed that states they don’t accept partial payments then I am not obligated to those terms. This whole situation has been a major inconvenience to me and my business. Extra Space Self Storage is very lucky that I have not pursued legal action for their carelessness and unethical practices. I am sure they are taking advantage of people who aren’t aware of the fact that if they have not signed their new agreements then they cannot legally be held to those terms of the new agreement. I have decided to take my business elsewhere, but I wanted to make the community aware of the unethical ways of this business.

Extra Space Storage in Laurel, Maryland is not a good place to store and keep your things. The management through the last year has gone way downhill. I know this because I have stored items with them for several years at different locations. I moved to this side of town a few years ago and Mason... The manager at the time was on the job! He also lived there. The facility was clean, professional and nice to deal with. However, the new management is AWFUL!!! Mason left suddenly and the new people... Greg and the regional guy... Don are unprofessional and trying to save every penny so the place is filthy with trash everywhere. Evidence of mice and snakes! No one lives on site anymore and the security gate is broken a lot!

They screwed up my payments by applying them incorrectly and almost sent my personal items to auction. I was lied to by Greg and I tried to contact corporate but they turn it back to the local regional and/or Greg and you get nowhere. I tried several times to speak with a corporate headquarter manager but they never called me back. I have stored with Extra Space in Frederick, Germantown, Bethesda and Laurel for years! They are not the same company they use to be!!! Terrible conditions and bad management caused me to move out. Unfortunately, this cost money out of my pocket so I am warning anyone who tries to store at this facility beware!!! Just so you know when Mason was manager and I received courtesy calls the week before payment was due, the place was very secure and he lived on site, the halls were clean and no food or evidence of mice were there.

I wrote a stellar review for this company then. I had to rewrite today this bad review because my experience with this company has changed for the worse. Greg told me bad information and when I talked to him again he changed his story... He lied to me and then threatened me that he would have me thrown off the property when I told him he was lying and I was so mad I could have spit! I used a couple of words to express my feelings and he didn't like it. He is arrogant and he misrepresented the company and the services to me. I strongly recommended his firing to a complaint line they have set up in Utah but they turned it back to him and some guy named Don. There are NO checks and balances with this organization. No accountability! I finally spoke to a woman named Sabrina in Annapolis and dealt with her until I pulled all of my personal things out of there.

The day I was loading a truck with my movers another family was also moving out. To their surprise, they found mold all over their furniture. They showed it to me and explained that it should not have happened because they stored in a climate controlled building. So, it is filthy, dirty, not climate controlled, gates are broken most of the time and no one lives on the property anymore! The management is rude and unprofessional! I have moved to a locally run company and it is well managed with someone living on site. Very clean and no evidence of mice. This is very disappointing to me because it didn't have to be this way. I think this is a systemic condition of the entire company. The complaint line in Utah is a scam. I hope this is helpful and gives fair warning to any unsuspecting person just trying to store/care for their personal things that mean so much.

I had a flat tire due to some constructions crews that they let work out of there. It's fine because they too should be able to rent but after they leave the management does not maintain the property... I was told that they are so busy making emails and cleaning out units. If the storage units are so great then why all the turn overs???

I actually had the DM OF THE COMPANY basically tell me it's not their problem in regards to the flat tire... These guys are the reason no ones wants to deal with a storage unit. TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY. That's what I pay for monthly... The reviews that speak about price increases are correct but all storage rentals continue to up the price simply Because They Can. Extra Space upped my price for the second time and I gave them notice. On my last day to move, there were heavy storms, so I contacted the office and asked for a 1 day extension. The employee was very nice and granted me the extra day... Then they charged me the FULL price.

Bottom line; NEVER trust someone at their word at Extra Space. When I attempted to contact corporate they just put you in a circle of automation so there is no way to even attempt to resolve an issue. DONE with Extra Space. By the way, here's a tidbit for you. My bank told me to NEVER use a debit card for the monthly payments. Always use your bank acct. and routing number for your payments. Cancelling and disputing issues like this are much easier. I am above angry with the way my son was treated at the facility in Corina on Vincent after a spending the morning there going thru boxes to gather all the required documents to fill out his FAFSA grant for his second year of college. The male manager asked him to leave the property. He told him that it was obvious that someone was living there. We have not spent one night in that place. In fact we live at **. A home which my family have lived in for 45 year. I have always used this storage facility. I can recall at least 5 times in the last 20 years. I have a nephew who is currently renting 2 spaces in the same facility. It's paid for in full. He then turned the power. My parents have used it from time to time as well. We are long time loyal customers.

Apparently since I put my mattress on the floor instead of standing it up so it would not become lumpy... we are living there. We are not! And I feel humiliated. There is absolutely no proof that we are living there. I am LIVID!! I won't be there much longer. Perhaps 4 more weeks and I will be moving on. If I don't move my stuff next week to the storage down the street on account of being treated so poorly and rudely. No wonder he has to ask you to do leave a good customer review as you initiate your rental. No one in their right mind would do so if he didn't beg for you to do so, and trust me that fake customer service ends the very next day... I have a feeling he tells everyone that comes down the unit they wanted, "Just rented". In the five min it took you to hang up the phone and walk to the office... larger sales possibly for a larger bonus.

I seen several of the size I wanted available the very next day and no moving trucks moving them anyone out... being that our family home is so full and the storage is so close to where we do live. We do go by everyday. Sometimes every other. I see other customers at their storages everyday too. I only pick up a couple days of clothing for us and then I wash it and trade outfits and return to my family home... we will being doing this for the next few weeks. Don't want to clutter my family's home with our things. If there is a problem or this is against the rules let me know so I can update my customer review. There is one man that comes every day that has turned his space into a workshop. He then turned the power off in our unit so now when we go inside we can't see anything since our unit has no power.

As advertised will my rate go down? Or will it be fixed? We are in a deep hallway and even in the daytime it is impossible to see and I have 4 broken toes from tripping in the darkness. Between all my family members and myself I can recall more than 30 times we have rented a unit there. This is how they treat their loyal customers. They assume and judge with absolutely no proof. Look at your surveillance video before accusing people of things they are not doing.

Extra Space storage in Oceanside just sold all my property ILLEGALLY! I paid my storage rental fee through February, I had gone in two times in March to pay but the office was locked and nobody in site. I have been out of town for two and a half months staying with my son. I have been very ill (the manager has been informed of how sick I have become over the past year). I spoke to the manager in Feb. when I paid my bill and informed her of being out of town plans.

They NEVER sent me any notice via phone or email. I asked if they sent me a notice, knowing that my son would have told me. They lied and said yes. I then asked what address? He told me the last known address and stated the address that I MOVED OUT FROM A YEAR AGO! I told him that and he tried to say that I had to update my file, I know for a fact that I did update my file when my bank changed my Visa/debit card (for the addresses had to match in order to process the payment). I asked if they placed an ad in the paper that they were intending to auction my belongings off. They said they did. But refused to tell me what paper. I knew, once again... ANOTHER LIE!

I did recently conduct around five searches on the Internet over the past few weeks under my last name for family history and absolutely NOTHING popped up regarding any legal notices. I AM the ONLY Barbara ** in America and Canada! I am the third Barbara ** to be born on American soil. I asked how much did they sell my life for? He refused to tell me.

So after I cried and the shock passed enough for to talk, I asked my son to call them and ask about my pictures and personal files (medical records and such) and medical equipment. They said that they would contact the buyer and ask if he could save those items for me. Several days later, not surprised that they have not called as they said that they would... my son called them. They told him that they left a message for the person who bought my property and they haven't heard anything back. They STOLE my property! WELL OVER FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH!!!

INTENTIONALLY STOPPED EMAILS! Last email I received was at the end of February letting me know that my due date was approaching. May 1st I received an email from them indicating that there will be construction work on certain days and that I possibly would have issues getting inside the facility on those days. I did receive one phone call, possibly from them, I am not sure! There is one message on my voice mail, from a female, her voice is crystal clear, yet the message breaks up severely. Can only make out my first name! The word call and the area code. The person did NOT STATE THE BUSINESS NAME nor purpose. If this message is from Extra Space Storage, it is clearly intentionally sabotaged for one to not understand.

If they did actually mail any notices... they INTENTIONALLY MAILED the notice to an address that they knew would NOT get to me. They did not post a notice that they intended to sell/auction my property. I researched to see if I could find any legal notices from Extra Space Storage intending to auction property in San Diego County. Guess what. I found such notices which ended in 2015. Over a year ago!!!

I think that they broke the lock to put their lock on. I suspect they took a look inside and saw what I had in there and deliberately & deceitfully stopped my emails! Snail mailed such notice to an address I moved from a year ago! Left a broken message on my voicemail that would show that they called my number. But the message is another story! They did not post a legal notice. If they did auction my belongings... It was an inside thing, or leftovers from what they didn't steal.

WHEN YOU OPEN UP THE STORAGE DOOR, YOU'RE GREETED BY 20 LEATHER JACKETS (over 5 grand), TWO 36" FLAT SCREEN HD LCD TVs, a container of my gem collection, (well worth over 25K not appraised) two 21 speed Giant Bikes (paid over a grand), a beautiful Victorian electric fireplace/heater (600.00 from Costco), a two seater kayak from Costco, a 600.00 portable air conditioner, a side by side pewter refrigerator (Whirlpool - 2,400), Whirlpool king size washer & dryer $1,300. A queen size Comfortpeadic bed, $2,800. Plus much more. That is some of the stuff you SAW when you open the door.

This was a 5X20 unit that I paid $340.00 per month for over a year! They STOLE MY PROPERTY! I am 56 years old. I am on Social Security, for I am disabled and currently have issues with internal bleeding. This was in 11/2014. I accepted what I was told. Today I contact my carrier and was advised that my renters' insurance covers my belongings throughout the US. Hence it also covered my storage unit. Mind you I have been paying $10.00 per month since 11/2014. That is $120.00 per year. When I called to inquire about arbitration, I was told that I would not be reimbursed. I advised them that I want to dispute the issue and request a refund since I was paying $10.00 for absolutely no reason. I intend to pursue my refund because this practice is a ripoff.

I called the national number to inquire about spaces, availability, pricing, etc. They asked if the phone I called from was a good callback number. I said it was not (last thing I want is to be on marketing lists and that wasn't my primary phone). Toward the end of the call I was again asked if the number was OK to use. I again said no. To my surprise, a few minutes later I get a call from the local site following up on my call to the national call center. So my number was in fact stored. I asked the local site to take that number off their system. Later that day I go to the local site to reserve a storage space and that number was STILL on their systems. Finally it's off, I think. This disregard for privacy outweighs any of their core business pluses and minuses.

I paid my account a few days late in March (March 27th). On Saturday, April 8th at 9:30 a.m. I got a call from Matt at Extra Space in Coral Springs stating because I was late I owed a late fee. I said no problem just tack it onto the following month. He told me he did not cash my payment and I had to pay the late fee. I told him I did not have a problem with that, however he should cash the check. I also told him why are you calling me at 9:30 on a Saturday. He said he tried to contact me but I did not receive any e-mails from Extra Space. I told him I wanted to talk to the manager Patrick and he said he would have him call me.

I called Matt today, April 12 and stated Patrick did not call me back. He said Patrick no longer had that storage area. He told me it was a company policy to not take the check if the late fee was not paid. I let him know I was going to talk to the corporate office because he was not making sense. I have not been up to the storage, however I guarantee that I have been blocked out. I will be looking for another storage but first I must send a complaint to the Better Business Bureau.

April 11, 2017. Their branches in Orange County, CA are understaffed. E.G. - 511 S. Grand Ave., Santa Ana, CA branch: Currently only 1 staff member there; just the Asst. Manager. - no onsite Manager, no janitor or Maintenance person; just 1 person doing it all while gate hours are 6 am to 10 pm. People (renters and none-renters) unlawfully live inside rented and vacated storage units, living inside units for months, before any complaint to Extra Space management is even looked into.

There has been an ongoing rodent problem there at this facility for over 1 1/2 years. Areas at facility's outside units stink of feces and urine from people dumping human urine there that dump in front of other people's rented storage units and urine dumped in the roadway in front of outside storage units. This facility was managed and maintained better when a manager named Chelsea worked there. She did regular patrols and kept druggies, squatters, low lives & rodents away or at bay. Good renters are getting their belongings contaminated by horrible odors from mice feces and urine, and by human urine waste improperly or unlawfully disposed of there. The urine odors do not come off everything - especially the rubber items, papers and likewise items. Your belongings get corrupted, contaminated and some of your belongings have to get thrown away. Extra Space isn't reimbursing for your losses.

The gate hours of 6 am to 10 pm is allowing squatters and low lives, especially when a facility is understaffed or if the employees don't do their job or care about people living inside storage units there. Renters' rent payments dropped off in mail slot have been known to mysteriously disappear, never to be found. This causes ID theft worries and a person forced to close bank account (s), plus the expense of ordering new checks to new bank acct.

Contacting corporate office is a waste of time. When you ask for Legal Dept., the response is "there is no Legal Dept.". The same scenario when you ask for Customer Service or to speak to anybody in authority there. You get the response "I'm sorry but nobody here can speak with you and you cannot leave a voice mail, nor do we have any email address or phone number to give you to speak to anybody in authority here."

Wish I knew this 2 years ago when I spent close to $2,000 moving a house and garage full of stuff into storage units at Extra Space. Years ago Extra Space was a defendant in a class action. That should have been a red flag. Now my belongings are imprisoned in the storage units because the human urine dumpages smell so strong outside the units' doors. The urine odors contaminate &/or destroy your belongings if you open your unit doors and expose them to the urine odors outside your door. I would not recommend this storage facility to anyone. It's all about Extra Space having deaf ears, giving deceptive ads and false promises, and making money off the public, to keep their shareholders happy.

I am moving to Buford from Flowery Branch, GA and imagine my surprise when I arrived with the U-Haul full of belongings from my home and found locks on my unit. I paid for this unit 4 days ago. It is after hours and of course the office is closed tomorrow. Called all of the 800 numbers and a supervisor was consulted and it as stated by the person who answered the call that there was nothing that could be done about it.

I have a U-Haul I have to unload back into my garage tomorrow and pay close to $200.00 for the vehicle and absolutely did not get to move or utilize my rental unit. I will empty out the smaller unit and definitely move everything to another business. Maybe I can work something out with U-Haul tomorrow. There is no way to contact email or call anyone in a situation like this. I did not go through this with the smaller unit. I was never told I had to come in during office hours to pick up any keys to locks that would be placed on an empty but rented unit. Incredibly terrible business and a big loss to my pocket book as I might have to have two trucks now to make the big move to my new home this coming weekend.

I find this to be very dishonest as they lied to me about the square footage when I found out later that actually the manager was the one who set the prices. When I went to check on my furniture and household goods I found there had been rats in 3 of the units and I could tell they had eaten some of the stuff. I was not able to get to all of my stuff to check everything. Along with that there was water damage on several boxes and furniture was totally ruined. The lady who works there gave me rat poison to put in the units (obviously must be a recurring problem to have it on hand). She asked if I had taken out their insurance (which I had not). She said there was nothing she could do.

We rented another unit to move some boxes. We are in the process of building a house so have nowhere else to put anything. She said we should move our stuff to another unit. My husband and I are in our late 60's and cannot physically move everything ourselves or pay someone else to move it. It has been a horrible experience and I would encourage anyone who has an option to rent from someone else to please do so. We have had family heirlooms destroyed and are now renting 5 units at a rate of $667 per month and destroyed furniture.

Went into the office, got it all squared away and the next month I get a phone call from the manager telling me he was giving me a call to see if I wanted to pay my bill before the auction started! I explained everything to him and he told me they don't have record in the computer and in order to keep my unit I'd have to pay. So I told him I'd be right over. I get there and the lady working in the office made me wait till after the auction before she would accept my payment and yep, you guessed it, my unit was the last unit auctioned!!! Of course I raised hell. Both employees lost their jobs but that didn't get mine and my kids' entire lives back!!!

Customer Service is a 1 out of 5. Overall satisfaction 0.5 out of 5. Extra Space Storage lures you in with their 1st month free gimmick. They know that once they have you in contract (and your belongings in their control) they've got you!!! The average self storage customer probably ends up utilizing the service longer than anticipated, which they count on. But that's not all!

The 1st month pays for itself in costs the company is not forthcoming about. Walking in (thinking you have done your shopping around for prices), you will pay initial setup fees, taxes, and insurance you did not anticipate. Try to make a payment online and the system may tell you that you have a zero balance. That happened to me. Called again a couple days later and the system tells me that on top of the $364/month charge, I have incurred $49.80 in late fees. So from walking in thinking the 1st month is free and my monthly payment is $320/mth. I pay $365/mth or $413/mth in extra charges. At a corporate level, I find their technology highly suspicious. At a local level, the store rep says that they do not waive late fees -- ever. Personally, I prefer to do business with companies that value both their customers and integrity A LOT more than Extra Space Storage.

This company is disgraceful. During my initial inquiries, the (800 number) telephone rep lied and said there would be on-site management 24/7. That was a lie. I learned that the hard way when I tried to access the unit after hours on Day 1. At sign-up, the on-site rep said none of the units on the side I preferred had lighting, an outlet, or running electricity, but silly them, they inadvertently gave me a unit on the side I preferred that had both lighting in the unit and an outlet outside of the unit. More lies. It is a shame that people work hard for their money and companies like Extra Space Storage takes it so easily. When you think of Extra Space Storage, think, Extra [Fees] Storage.

This place under new management is worse than ever. Don't bother to call corporate. Left messages for almost a month. Finally heard from Roz ** who told me that they send everything back to the DM. She typifies the company's attitude. Rude and disinterested. Why would I want to continued to talk to the same person, when I'm not getting anywhere.

The mgr. Susie informed that a male customer on my floor asked her my name. Although I told her not to she did anyway. What kind of woman does that? This claim is made under I. Malicious Mischief. Adjective is injurious. Extra Space staff had every opportunity to rectify the problem when the renter moved out. They were well aware that he had indeed moved out. I overheard Celine talking to another renter saying they knew he'd moved out. He apparently had moved the first of September. I began seeing roaches in the hallway. If they made their rounds they saw them too. Why didn't either of them investigate where the roaches were coming from? They had inherited a facility that had no roaches. There was clear evidence that roaches had become a major issue.

Four things could have happen: They made the daily rounds and did not care. They didn't make the rounds. They wrote down that they made the rounds. But they actually didn't. They opened the previous renters storage unit and didn't want to tackle the clean up job themselves. All or any one of these reasons created Malicious Mischief, on the part of Extra Space employees. OTHER FACTS: THE ELEVATOR BREAKS DOWN ALL THE TIME. ON THE WEEKENDS IF THEY'RE NOT THERE YOU'RE OUT OF LUCK.

8/21/16 Stopped by ESS to pick up a script and other notes I needed for a meeting that afternoon. There was a sign written on 85-11 sheet of paper on the elevator that it was not working. Warren must have put it there. It was the weekend he worked. When she Susie left her apt. she had to seen the note. Apparently she left with no alternate way for customers to access their units. Called the call center and was told by someone named Cynthia told Susie couldn't be disturbed. Really ticked off.

Texted Celine to see if she knew where Susie was. She didn't know that Susie had told call center that she was unavailable. She said it was weird that I was told that. Asked Celine for Michael's number to call about the constant elevator breakdowns. She told me call the call center and demand to speak to him. I called the next and got a rep. named Jamal on the phone. He said he could leave a message. I left my contact info. Never got a call back.

A couple months ago Susie informed that a male customer on my floor asked her my name. She said she didn't tell him. I said I don't want a strange man to know my name. She said she didn't give it to him. However when she was removing the red lock from his door she spoke to me and then called my name and smirked. My brother is sheriff's detective. I also know a few cops in the area. I told them about the incident. They ALL give that worried look. They know when a man asks for a woman's name he is trying to familiarize himself with her. This guy is married. Why in hell does he want to know me. PERHAPS THE BEST QUESTION WOULD BE WHY ANOTHER WOMAN JEOPARDIZE MY SAFETY. That in itself is malicious. Had I wanted him to know my name I would've told him myself. I believe she did this to retaliate for me calling Michael.

When I filed the claim I finally heard from Michael. He said it was true that Susie didn't do any kind of work after hours. That there were liability issues if she did. Then we got to the unnecessary roach infestation. I told him that I filed under the Malicious Mischief because Susie was pissed off for me calling him. And that the guy had left at least two weeks prior. I also told him that I overheard Celine say they knew the guy had moved out. Since they knew why didn't they do anything? The infestation was evident. They were everywhere. I have included a Google drive link of 10 videos of the infestation and clean up related images. Michael said they had to file paperwork etc. That it took a couple of days. It might have taken a couple of days. NOT A COUPLE WEEKS. I sent Susie text messages re: the problem. She never responded.

Again I called the call center and asked for the ESS insurance company that I was paying to cover my belongings. I called Beecher Carlson and asked for a copy of the policy. Apparently Extra Space collects your premiums, but they don't want the insurance company to pay out. I checked out the insurance company on the better business bureau site. They have a C-. Extra Space has an A!!! I don't how that could be. They have less than 2 stars on this website - ConsumerAffairs.

Michael and I settled on two months free. But after the new issues I DO NOT WANT THAT. I ONLY MY $3000.00 from my insurance policy. The situation is now untenable. They have now set out to make the two months impossible. Last Saturday I was taking a bag of trash to the garbage dumpster. Celine was leaving. But when she saw me drop the bag at dumpster. She jumped out of her car yelling and screaming in front of another customer, that there was no dumping there anymore. I reminded her I was not dumping. She yelled that she was going to charge me. I told her to charge Michael since he was giving me the 2 months. By the way there was no sign on the dumpster. I have a video clip which shows other trash by the dumpster. Apparently that customer wouldn't be charged. Just me. I don't like people yelling and screaming at me when I pay for a service.

10/19/16 I had barely got on the property when Celine was sitting in her car. She said Susie needed to see me. I told her that I was tired of the constant harassment. Again she was yelling and screaming something. I kept walking. I sent Susie text and told her in the future to put into writing anything she wanted to tell me.

I had a morning meeting so I crashed at my storage. Later at about midnight Susie and her boyfriend knocked on the unit door. So now Susie and her boyfriend's liability doesn't count. He doesn't even work for ESS. And they their kid home alone. Cause I heard her tell him to go back downstairs. She told me that I had to leave. I tried calling Michael's cell. No answer. Tried to leave messages. Couldn't. Both she and Celine knew I sometimes crashed there. There was a guy who kicked the elevator door and dented it. Celine said in front of a temp or guy from another Extra Space, as they were reviewing the video tape, that they let him stay there.

Susie was pissed because I filed my claim. She said I should've told them about the problem. Well I did tell them. I HAVE THE TEXTS TO PROVE IT. But they were so busy being nasty they ignored my requests. She called the cops. I could've waited on them. But I left. THEY BOTH KNEW. The next afternoon as I was entering the property, again there's Celine sitting her car laughing and pointing at me. Apparently Susie showed her the video of me the night before. All three of these occurrences with Celine are on your company's security cameras. Knowing these two they probably uploaded to some website. Is this the kind of behavior that your shareholders view as ESS having a good crew of employees? Hollywood has a number of challenged individuals. These two are instigators. I fight by writing letter etc. Others don't.

The facts are these issue were totally avoidable. The text messages I sent to Susie were never answered. I have those on my phone. I happened to be leaving my unit when Susie and 3 cleaning women from Leon's Cleaning Service showed up. When they opened the door the roaches leapt out and out onto the woman who opened the unit door. She said, that Susie should have called her earlier. I came back just to check on what kind of cleaning they were doing. I met two of the women on the elevator. They were going to the office. At one point a cleaning woman states in Spanish/translated in English: "I have to close my mouth before I eat them. This was an epic infestation."

At the end of the video where I am filming the amount of junk etc. and talking to another cleaning woman, you hear Susie saying, "please Michael pick up." Obviously the cleaning ladies (Leon's Cleaning Service) had told her that they would have to charge more for that kind of infestation. That Saturday (9/24/16) at 9 a.m. I unpacked everything in my storage unit. Box by box. Roaches were spread out like a blanket in the bottom of my boxes. There's video of those as well. While I was repacking stuff in to boxes.

They were crawling back into the new boxes. There were so many roaches I could even focus fast enough to film them. They were in my laser printer. The motor part. They were in my microwave. The motor part. They were breeding on/in my queen size mattress. I can't remove the mattress by myself. I did not finish the unpack/repack after until 9pm Saturday. Sunday morning I took everything to the laundry. This situation is two mean girls bullying someone to get their way, instead of practicing some actual customer service. Customer service is NOT punitive. Neither of them ever apologized for allowing the infestation get out of hand. Not that an apology would've corrected the problem. But that is how good customer starts. I no longer trust Michael to do the right thing either. He hired them. Typically the employees reflect the boss' temperament.

Pertinent Facts: Called Michael 8/22/16, spoke with Jamal. Left message to call regarding ELEVATOR INOPERABLE AGAIN. Your website states the plural Elevators. There is only one. When Michael call me it was regarding the Malicious Mischief claim I filed with Beecher Carlson. That was October 11, 2016. Michael offered 1 month free storage. We settled on two that's what we settled on. He said he didn't want Susie doing ANYTHING after hours for liability sake. But on your website it says on site manager. Why have a manager who isn't available to the customers. I had called on a Sunday because the elevator was broken AGAIN. Susie had gone for the day. However there was a 8.5/11 taped to the wall. She would've had to have seen it when she came out of her apartment.

I no longer want free storage. These two women are bullies. Other ppl in the area have problems with them as well. I don't like bullies. I am a writer. I pay attention and I knew they would try and make it hell for me for filing the claim. I pay for that insurance. I have every right to file and win. Because this whole thing is about two junior high school mean girls that are pissed because they were negligent.

On 10/19/2016 at about midnight Susie knock on the door of the unit and asked me to leave. She brought her boyfriend with her. Both she and Celine knew I sometimes slept there. SO NOW SHE CAN WORK AFTER HOURS. Bringing her boyfriend shows that she was not concerned about liability. She pretended she didn't know I was. Her boyfriend asked if she was ok. She told him he could leave. She called the cops. My brother is a Sheriff's detective. So I left. I also know a few cops in the area. They all know I am not a troublemaker. I knew she was recording. Because she said that I SHOULD HAVE LET THEM KNOW ABOUT THE ROACHES. I have text messages that I sent when I saw they were doing nothing to solve the problem. I also have video evidence of the roaches in the hallway.

SO THEN EXTRA SPACE WANTS TO CHARGE ME AND THEN ASSIGN TASKS FOR ME TO DO. That's not how business works. At this juncture I want my 3,000.00 from Beecher Carlson. I don't trust Michael either. Three thousand dollars is small price to pay for this bullying and the inconvenience due to their blatant negligence. I am sure your stockholders wouldn't want this kind of behavior by your employees to continue and damage the company's reputation.

Be aware before committing to this storage company that it's monthly rate increases by at least ten percent twice a year. This has been my personal experience. In addition, advance notice of a rate change may or may not be given. One is just as likely to discover the increase by comparing monthly bills. When I brought to the attention of company staff and management that such frequent and large rate increases are not the industry norm and undermine good customer relations, I was told that the storage contract provides for such rate increases. Okay. But just because a company (or a person) can do something by law doesn't mean that it is right or should be done.

Same as happened to reviewer John. Over Labor Day weekend I couldn't log on website to pay, some issue with new passwords as listed on the site. I finally got through online and the payment had was correct for the month. Tuesday, I called to pay the amount from Monday holiday and John at the office quoted me double plus lien fee or instead of $138.00 he said I owe $378.00 or so. A lien fee, and late fee in one day? For a future lien sale that work could not have possibly yet occurred and is not intended for people who are paying. Lien fees are for abandoned storage and people who can't pay.

I've been paying monthly for 7 years; and since this employee John has come aboard they have tried to do this last year as well. Extra Space's corporate motto "Our goal is to provide excellent service, a high-quality product and superior results to everyone that comes in contact with Extra Space Storage." needs to be upheld. The other time this happened Corporate office was very helpful in getting the District Manager to eventually contact me. The District Manager then negotiated a payment which removed additional fees tacked onto the unsubstantiated work (not) performed for lien fees. I still had to pay the one late fee and 85 dollar lien fee.

THE EMPLOYEES DEFINITELY get bonuses for the lien fees they place, which is why they take every opportunity to greed on their customers. The employee who was there had stated they'd published my storage in a newspaper for auction which was found to be false. I believe that misstatement may have helped remove the tacked on fees on top of lien fees.

So find out who your District Manager is and tell them what has happened and what you would like to see done about it. I will do the same, I just loathe dealing with unreasonable people who mess with me because they can load my belongings over my head as ransom. These are unethical business practices and not in alignment with stated corporate policies.

I've been renting the same storage space for 4 years, and every thing was fine until Cube Smart sold the property to Extra Space Storage. The monthly fee has been paid by my company credit card for all that time, but when Extra Space took over, there was obviously some issues with transfer of account information. Unbeknownst to me, Extra Space was not able to obtain payment from my credit card for two months, and they assessed a $24 late fee twice followed by a $85 "Pre-foreclosure" fee. Then, miraculously, on 24 August, they were able to extract a payment of $393 dollars for two months rent, insurance, late fees and the "Pre-foreclosure" fee.

So obviously, they were doing something wrong during July and August, and finally figured it out. I complained a week and a half ago, and got to speak with Brittany today who gave me the same corporate line despite my pleading that it was not my fault, and how could they do this to a 501 (c)(3) veterans' organization? She was totally heartless, and my suspicious mind thinks perhaps her bonus comes from screwing people with these bogus charges which, in my view, are the result of their incompetence. Then they raised the rent by $50 for the two. I decided on a storage unit at a different, locally-owned place and it cost $300 in labor and truck rental but it was worth it. Their parting shot was to charge me ("computer mistake") for the following month, even though the onsite manager and I went through the entire close-out process. And 3 weeks later the computer still has not credited my account that $180.

Over my rental period I've had my gate code locked twice so that I was unable to gain access and I've had signs of rats in my unit. Today I went to my storage locker and found that it had been double locked by the manager. Since there is no longer a manager on site we had to wait for half an hour for the manager to show up to let me in to my locker that was paid up to date.

The manager states this was the second time today he had to come down to let a paying customer in. The manager offered no explanation and no real apology as to why he had locked me out and wasted my time today. We noticed that 8 other units in our building had been double locked as well so this does not appear to be a random incident. I will be vacating ASAP and will warn anyone currently there or considering renting from Extra Space to give it some careful consideration.

I explained I get paid on that 36th day and could pay Immediately. Not good enough. They say the 'computer assess the fine' they 'can't stop it'. Spoke to a Regional General Manager named Brittany at ** who towed the company line saying the fine would be assessed. They assess the fine at midnight the same time my money hits. That's an easy 85 dollars to make.

I can understand now why people leave such ugly comments about this company. The CEO Spencer F Kirk hides from social media. You can barely find him on LinkedIn. I think it's sad a company doesn't want to work with its customers and even worse the CEO can't be bothered enough to have contact information to receive feedback about his company. So, what is this 85 dollar snafu gonna cost them? A customer of course. I'll get my stuff out within a week and that 5x5 closet size can sit empty rather than earn an easy 120 a month. Do they care? The customer service here is awful from both employees and management. I signed up for a storage unit 10x10 for 188.00 a month which I didn't even need and they knew that I'll update a pic. It's huge. I get the first months free so I use my credit card to pay. The next month I receive a email saying "Thank you for payment of 188.00 to extra space." I'm like "What?" I never even authorized them to automatically take payment out of my account. I called and I was very upset. That credit card has a limit on it. I wouldn't use that for an automatic payment nor did I agree to do such. The employee was very abrupt saying there was nothing he could do until I said I would call my card company and dispute the payment for non-authorization and remove my things from their establishment - all of a sudden he can refund me back the money. Then he agreed to call me back when it was done so I can use my bank card instead.

We argued over the matter for 5 mins before that just him saying he didn't sign me up. I'm like "So that doesn't mean you can't fix it?" I didn't mind paying just not with that card. I was so upset instead of him helping he was just acting like nothing could fix it and I have to wait for the manager. 3-4 days later I get a call from the manager telling me I owe 223.00. I'm like "What? I spoke with the employee. He would call me back once my other transaction was sent through. I never agreed for automatic payments."

He gets upset saying, "Oh now it's 1 day late. Now it's 223.00." I'm like "And whose fault is that? Not mine. I didn't authorize you to use my credit card and needed to make sure my money was back to avoid paying double." He's like well he doesn't see that in the notes. I should've called and paid. I'm like, "Why would I pay twice?" First he says he can't reverse it. Then says he can but it will take a few days and he's gonna call me.

It's like shady business. What kind of games are being played? What type of scams? You know I'm frustrated now. I'm like "Well, I don't have to put up with your customer service. You're very rude and abrupt - you and your employee." He goes on to say the movers I hired broke his gate. LIKE ARE YOU THE MANAGER or what? I said, "Sir that has nothing to with me and doesn't mean you take your anger out on me. I am the customer and I am always right. You should be helping not fighting. I can move my stuff out if this is the service you offer." SMH. Then he says he can remove the late fee and I'm like, "And how long before I move my things?" He's like "The 31st." He wasn't even trying to let me talk. They don't have the right to speak to people any kinda way. I don't like that. Don't do business with them. The lack of professionalism is intolerable and I won't stand for it. You shouldn't either.

Arriving at my storage unit I found that my key to my Extra Space lock did not work. I went over to the office and told the site manager Stephanie that my key didn't work and asked if she had a duplicate key. She told me she did not have a duplicate and that she could cut the lock off. Stephanie cut the lock off and I moved all my items out of the unit. I returned to the office to terminate the lease and was told by Stephanie that the next month payment was already taken out of my bank account (I was on automatic payment) and there were no refunds.

I was reviewing the termination document on the customer monitor when Stephanie reached over the counter and shut off the monitor, and handed me the receipt and said "here," and walked away from the front desk to the back office. Bad customer service. I think they set up the automatic payment to come out a few days prior to the beginning of the next month and then tell the customer, no refunds, even if the customer moves out on the last day of the month.

Brittany the other half of this dynamic duo is just fabulous also, lots of smiles all the time. Rene and Brittany are very professional, and well-informed. They BOTH keep me up-to-date. I was informed by letter that new roll-up doors were going to be installed with a private security firm videotaping the whole process. How cool is that?

Rene came up with an idea to install them on my units farthest away from the office. Again very cool. That's how this team thinks and performs, OUT OF THE BOX I call it! The locks look tamper proof, no room for a pry bar. And with an manager on site, Rene roams the site on a golf cart just before the automatic gate shuts down for the night. He has URGED ME to pick up the pace, and leave before closure. Brittany and Rene are doing a good job filling up the site with customers. As I see it the more customers there are around, the more eyes are open to mischief and such.

I know they will react promptly if I see something NOT NORMAL when I tell them. They even have an security company do drive throughs before the site is closed for the night. Again how cool is that! I'm old fashioned, in that when I get good service and expert help. I make a comment to folks in higher places. It's just as easy to complain, and I do my share of that also. And take Brittany's advice, buy the round cylinder lock they carry in stock. I've never seen one before. Same price as a good master lock but no room for a pry bar. Thanks guys...

Unit prices initially went from $74,20/month to $87/month in a year with 3 percent deflation. In the second year, the price increased again from $87/month to $111/month. We had 0.5% inflation that month.

Yesterday, received a notice in the mail that prices will rise again from $111 to $121 -- an increase of 10 percent in an era where inflation is flat, and the electrical prices the storage company is facing (their principal expense) has decreased 10 percent in the past year. If this disabled veteran could handle the back strain, I'd be moving out, but it is dangerous for me to do so...so I'll remain, subject to the immoral extortion of the company. Any company that treats those of us who kept the nation protected so they could build these businesses this badly deserves to be out of business. My experience with Extra Space Self Storage went from heavenly to hellish in the time it took for me to move my things into one of their units. I was facing a hardship, and had lost my home. Once I had moved out, I had to find a place for my belongings in a hurry. Enter Extra Space. The manager, Marten, was very welcoming and cordial upon accepting my business, and I thought that I would be able to see through the other end of homelessness without too much trauma. I found a new place two weeks later, and returned to move some of my things in my new home.

As I was moving things out, I was confronted by one of the Extra Space personnel, who was rude and kept coming up to me telling me that I had to leave. He actually started shouting at me to leave. I told him that I was just finishing up putting my things away and that it would take just a few minutes. This wasn't enough for him. He kept telling me to get out. So I asked him if he could help me put my things in my unit, and he replied that he doesn't work for me, and to get out. I finally told him: "Look, I can put my things away, or I can argue with you. I can't do both."

Additionally, Marten, the manager, doesn't keep his posted hours. I went to his office for a question only to find that he had closed his office several minutes before the posted 6:00 pm posted time. And finally, when I came to make a cash payment to settle my account and take my things out, Marten refused to accept payment. When I asked for his supervisor, he refused, saying that there is no one else to talk to. But when I asked: "and if I find out the name of your supervisor through other means, what then?" Marten took down my number and said that someone would call me to talk to me. No call came. It was just a simple storage space. And now I have to get an attorney involved just to get closure with this company. There are several self-storage facilities in your neighborhood. If one of them is Extra Space Self-Storage, I have only two words of advice: Just. Don't.

Shady business dealings in the monthly rent department and lease. Since I am waiting for the lease I signed to be emailed now I can't say for sure how this clause that can raise rent anytime is stated. The store manager was very good at having me sign things quickly to get the space rented to me expeditiously, but he was not as quick at giving me a copy of the lease to read over. What he did give me was a brochure and the receipt for my first month rent and fees. No copy of the lease was sent nor was there ever an attempt to send me one. No postcard notice of the rent being raised was sent either even though the store manager said there was. Can you believe that? I don't.

The reason for the rent increase was the costs of doing business. They can say that every day if they chose to do so and raise your rent. What I understand "now" is they can again raise my rent in 9 months. The store manager said they can or will do that. Interesting. So they raised the rent after 4 months and now "maybe" they won't raise it for another 9 months? I think they will.

My advice to the readers is not to rent at their facilities until they provide more stable rent scales and consumer friendly leasing. The facility I rent at is very nice, but before long I will be out of there because of the way they charge me rent. Those come-on rates are no deal. They are a hoodwink to get you in there. From what I am reading here I see we have all been taken. The price increases put them far over any other local storage... unfortunately it costs a significant amount of time to move to another storage unit. Even so, I will find time this summer. Even renting a truck several weekends and paying for a month of overlapping storage would save me money very quickly. I feel conned, and trapped by the moving time. I do not have a weekend or two to waste, but will have to.

What good is storage if I can't actually leave my stuff there very long? They aren't any better than the other places either; 'indoor' just means it mostly has a roof (though the storage area's walls do not go up to it, so birds still fly inside). I think it has cameras by the gate... which works most of the time... mostly. The gate does close relatively early, which will hamper moving my stuff.

"Could you please try to understand my position and give me time to pay what I owe, please." ** said he would see what he could do after much pleading with him. Never got back to me.

On Tuesday day of auction 01/19 I went to office and spoke with a young girl who made an attempt to contact mngr. He never returned **'s call. I asked if unit had been sold. She made the attempt to look in computer but was unable to access info. So, she wasn't sure. I explained that I spoke to ** but he didn't get back to me. I said my belongings had better not leave the unit. That I would somehow find a way to pay. ** in turn said nothing could be done if unit had been sold. ** said that she would continue to try and reach **. I said "Please call me tonight as I am sick over this". No call from **! Received a call from ** on 01/20 stating that the unit had been sold. I asked once again to please have ** call me. No call!

Went online to get corporate number and then that's when I started reading all the negative reviews. Started calling corporate 9:00 on 01/21 after several attempts someone finally picked up. I spoke with **, explained, and was told nothing could be done. Asked to speak to someone above her. Spoke with ** senior mngr. and was told the same. I couldn't accept that. I asked what has happened to human compassion? I explained that I went through a divorce after 30 years of marriage. I have many health problems that put me in the hospital. The only reason I put what I have left in storage is because I was storing my things in a garage and a person that was using drugs stole a lot of my things for drug money. All I have left are sentimental items that would be of no use to anyone else but myself.

I lost both my parents at a young age to cancer. I only have many pictures, recipes passed through generations, and some items from my great grandmother which I treasure. All that I have left is in that unit. Doesn't matter! ** said he would call district mngr. for North Attleboro and he would be in touch within 24 to 48 hrs. I said I don't have that time to wait. ** the DM called within a 1/2 hr. Once again I explained. 0 compassion. He signed off on unit! And yes it had been sold! Only thing that could be done is for him to call ** and have him get in touch with person that purchased unit to see if I could buy it back from him and he doesn't have to comply. I called Boston hotline and spoke to a very nice woman that could only give her number, not her name. She said she would call North Attleboro and DM and call me back. She called and said that I can only hope that the new owner of my property would call me! She felt so bad.

DM didn't call her back! I called DM and asked if info was given and he said yes to mngr. person is under no obligation to call me. Totally up to he or she! I did inform all that I would have both Boston and Providence News come to storage to interview me on my behalf! They didn't like that! DM said I cannot go on property and harass employees! I said I know that! That's not my intention. I just want to be heard in hopes that people will get back to being real again and show kindness and compassion for others as they would want the same for themselves. My heart is broken. As I sit and patiently wait to see if I will indeed receive a call. Please... Can anyone help me? It's all I have left.

I chose this facility, because it was the closest to my home. The manager was friendly, and the facility was very impressive, clean and well-maintained. Almost a year later, however, I noticed that they had been overcharging me. My first four months, the bill had been $99. After that point, though, they had been charging me $112 with no explanation. I called to discuss this with the manager who became immediately cold and hostile and stated that I had received a letter in July about the rate increase. Sorry, but NO I did not receive that letter. I would NEVER expect a rate increase in the first year, especially given that the rate they are advertising is still below the amount they are charging me. My payments are all automatically withdrawn and have never been late. I am extremely unhappy with this very poor customer service and bait-and-switch advertising.

I then phone the location to confirm an appointment with Sherry, she told me that I needed to come in ASAP to secure the unit or someone could rent it. I was shown a 10x5 unit, I explained that my reservation was for a 5x10. I was shown a 5x10 and was told it was reserved.

Really? With a first come, first serve policy it should not matter, that was not rented and available. I spoke with Mr. ** who had nothing to offer but excuses and double talk. After I paid, I went to my storage to pick up something and to my surprise, I notice they put a lock on my space door so I could not open it. In October 2015 I put pictures and frames and other odds and ends in a 5x10 temperature controlled storage in Hoover, AL. On Nov. 4, 2015 I went to take a plastic tote to my storage and soon as I opened my unit the horrible smell almost knocked me down. When I first rented a unit I could tell that there had been previous water damage and it did not feel as if there was any temp control in the unit. I asked the manager for another unit and asked her if there had been any previous damage and she assured me that there had not. I moved to another unit but I never felt relaxed about leaving anything in the unit but I did because I had no where else to store it.

On Nov. 4 a decorative rug was already damaged and 2 boxes of pictures. This was about 1 pm. I reported it to the manager and she came to take pictures. She immediately gave me another unit two or three buildings away. I was told that I had 24 hours to move everything. There was no way that I could physically move half of the stuff so I ended up having to hire someone to move my things and I paid him $65. The man that moved me told me that I did not cause the problem and Extra Space should at least reimburse me or make a truck available for me to move. Anyway, the next day I called the manager at Extra Space and asked her if they could not charge me on November 6 because I had to move due to their water leak and pay a mover plus I didn't get to go back to work for the rest of the day.

She told me that when they had a leak in the past Extra Space hired a moving company to move the units to other units but they did not reimburse people. I told her that I didn't need to be reimbursed but I shouldn't get my storage free for November. She said that she would ask her boss and get back with me on Friday. I did not hear from her on Friday but I was checking my bank account on Saturday evening and found that Extra Space had deducted rent from my bank account. For two years I had rented from Cool Box storage and I felt confident with them but the pricing had gone up so I had to use Extra Space. I noticed a huge difference from the start. When I rented from Extra Space I explained that I needed a place that I could be assured of no leaks and constant temperature control. I had to ask twice if she was sure that there was air conditioning.

Anyway, the new unit that I have is the same size but you can definitely feel the air conditioning. I felt that the manager wanted to help but I feel the company is cheap and greedy. I do not think that the building I was in had a new roof. I was told that there had been a water leak 7 months before but it was in another building. I feel that I should not have to pay my storage for a month since I paid for my unit and there was water damage due to no fault of mine. I had to take the rest of the day off and pay someone to help move me. I was not offered any help but told that I had to have everything out within 24 hours. If I had it to do over again I would not rent a storage unit from Extra Space and I would tell anyone that I thought was going to use them to pay a little more for a decent place.

Even after the office opened at 9:30, the restroom remained locked with no manager to be found. The manager drove by later on as we finished loading and confirmed I moved out. EXTRA SPACE STORAGE!!! This complaint is regarding unethical business practice of EXTRA SPACE STORAGE (1660 Oak Tree Rd, EDISON, NJ) by providing service at low rates at the beginning and then, arbitrarily raising rates at multiple intervals without proper guidelines. We signed the Contract in 2013 September for a monthly rate of $77. Thereafter, the rate was increased to $86 dollars in Feb 2014. In Oct 2014 the rate was increased to $95 dollars. Now once again, the rate is increased to $108.29. The rate is increased three times during 18 months Term. My increase in monthly payment went from $77 to $126 (inclusive all charges). This is just unreasonable.

When questioned about the arbitrary increase, we were told that it is their standard business practice and we were provided with an introductory offer when we signed the Contract. This is a surprise to us, we were never informed about the introductory offer. We expressed our concern with the customer service dept and told them that if the issue was not resolved, we would complain to BBB. We were told that somebody from the office would revert back to us with a remedy in 48 hrs. We haven’t heard back from them yet. While investigating on the issues, we learnt that this is the common issue being faced by the Extra Space customers and we also see many complaints lodged against them in different forums for their atrocities.

These kind of issues must be tackled ASAP by the respective authorities to stop such loots. Desired Settlement: I would like a refund of the multiple rate increase arbitrarily done. I would also like Extra Space storage to amend their agreements so that the rate increases are spelled out in clear terms. There should not be more than one increase in a year.

This was after hours on a weekend so I had to wait two days to figure out what was going on. They never notified me. No voice message, no email, no letter in the mail. My $1500 sofa was destroyed by rodents, which is not covered by their insurance. Employees at location, Roosevelt Blvd Phila PA, were incredibly rude and disrespectful almost to the point of being demeaning to myself and my daughter. The main number I contacted offered a verbal apology and after 3 more phone calls from me 1 month free rent. NEVER again!

The young ladies who operate the facility in Hilo, Hawaii, could not be nicer nor more efficient and welcoming. But i must say that the corporate structure of Utah-based Extra Space Self Storage (ESSS) somehow manages to "trickle down" in a most avaricious and unpleasant manner. To wit: We rented 3 large storage units from ESSS upon our move here while we built our new house. Promptly, every several months, the rental rate on each of the units was RAISED significantly.

I called corporate headquarters and they informed me that they could raise rates whenever they like -- "read your contract", she said -- and as a matter of policy always DO raise the rates on long-term customers. Whereas most businesses, my own certainly included, tend to treat long-term customers preferentially, often providing discounts, not ESSS. Apparently once they realize that you, the customer, have nowhere else to turn they put the screws to you -- if you don't like it, just move all your stuff somewhere else! A Hobbesian business model, to be sure. To repeat, the local staff at the Hilo facility couldn't have been nicer. But Extra Space Self Storage? Yuck. No thanks!

Why bother with these negatives when there a million other options, some literally across the street. Their prices are not competitive as well. Recently, I was advised that I was mailed a 15 day Eviction Notice. Last week, I was visiting the facility and the gates were not working properly. To make a long story short, I eventually got in to the facility. I have been a customer at Extra Space for over a year and a half at this point and I have been dealing with several issues at the facility but this takes the cake. I was exiting the facility approximately 7:51 pm and I was unable to exit due to the gates not operating, I sent my cousin who was with me on this evening on the outside to try opening gate. We were trying until we both received messages stating "the facility was closed." At this point we were already on the phone with the corporate office to receive assistance to get out of the gate. Due to the fact of another customer trying to get in the second gate after 7:55 pm (on the total opposite side of the storage facility), the manager would not come to let us out.

I had to make three calls to corporate before the manager of the facility came out. During my last call with the corporate office operator asked me to ignore the upset customer, and told me the manager came down (from her upstairs apartment) but she did not see me - she only saw the customer trying to enter the facility on the other side. She told me the manager will come down and let me out shortly. Finally, the upset customer say to us "I will leave so that she will let you guys out, she is not going to let you out until I leave." He was right. She came down to let us out approximately 8:58 pm, she came down minutes after he pulled off. When she came down she was upset and telling us we had to leave by 7:55 pm. I told her I was aware of that and I told her we were having trouble with the gate.

When I returned a couple days later my access was denied, I came back the next day and had the same trouble. I called and she told me that my access was denied, I could only come when the manager was there. I was being evicted because I neglected to leave before 7:55 pm (the signs on the gate clearly states 8:00 pm). I have ONLY 15 days to remove my items... but I can only come during certain days and hours. Not the normal hours that I'm currently paying for... I work during those hours... I was the one who was stuck behind a broken gate, at night, in a very unsafe position until almost 9:00 pm and did I mention the manager was 1 minute away in her house?

I find it difficult to believe that those are grounds for eviction. What are my rights? I'm fine with leaving this storage unit but where is my justice. I have to now leave work to move my things out because I can't enter the facility without the manager whom will be BACK to work in a couple days... interesting... THUMBS DOWN!

EXTRA SPACE STORAGE... My son renting Unit #371 in West Sacramento, CA and lost in a auction on July 16, 2014. I attended the auction along with my brother who was the bidder. I made a statement that "My family was illegally evicted and is in hardship so please keep the bids down". The auction caller got upset and threaten to put me out if I said another word. The bidders became silent after the small misconduct of the auction caller and the bids began. The caller started at $1, $50, $100, $200, $225, $585. The problem is everybody was silent except my brother who the caller was looking eye to eye. My brother asked loudly after $200 "Who am I bidding against?" and the auction caller once again ask my brother "Can you afford $585, well it sold." We stood around and ask many who bought the unit, before we ask the auction caller who bought it. The caller reply "A regular and I make sure you get your personal value back."

We continue to call until the clerk return my son trophies. We continue to call again to get the rest of our personal belonging. But when I ask the clerk "Is today another auction and it have to be the auction caller who got our storage because he's here and your calling." (recorded conversation). She got upset and they refuse to give us our personal belonging. The auction caller violated the "Auction Act", he should of told my brother that he would also be bidding in auction, which that is a conflict. And seems very illegal.

In the unit was my home belonging (bath, bedroom, living room, kitchen), product to my Non-Profit Organization, teaching youth and adults to become Designer Seamstress and Beyond (Fashion Show Outfit, Championship Jerseys, Patent Products, clothes, history irons, sewing machines, computer, cabinets, file cabinet, t-shirt, mouse, cups apron, etc creation products). Along with my son personals i.e. pictures with the mayor, prom, murdered brother's and the memoirs, handmade clothing "Made With Love By Patricia" labeled in the inside, (i.e. prom outfit, graduation, casual clothing).

My son wrote a letter asking for his personal belonging. The storage sent my son $150 and email telling him what they did was legal. I am just in hope of getting or buying back my extreme valued personal product. My brother will be seeking legal advice and to pursue this matter. I will post an many lost n found add. The cruel and unusual act of the storage was; My bill was $334, I had $300. We waited almost two hours for the caller to arrive, I ask the clerk a few time to call the owner or boss to see if he would except my payment. She refuse, but she was also the assistance to the auction caller. She also was the one who told me he was in town as the auction caller for the day, she called me to pick up a small box with our trophies inside. Conflict!

Extra Space Storage basically ruined my life. Due to a serious illness and my being unable to work, my kids and I became homeless a few years back. We had no choice but to put everything we owned, save for our clothing and immediate personal effects, into a storage facility. (We are in suburban NY.) The staff at the storage facility all knew of my situation, and they were always more than kind, empathetic and accommodating when it came to my paying my monthly bill. It was paid in full each and every month; it was just late from time to time due to our situation. The staff knew that everything my kids and I owned was in our storage unit.

One day last summer I go in person to pay the storage bill, and I realize that there are all new people, and that the sign outside now reads Extra Space Storage. I was assured (with a false smile and a phony sense of security) that everything would remain the same. **! I informed the manager that I was extremely ill and unable to work, and that there may be times that I might be a bit late in paying my bill, but if he looked at my history, that my bill had always been paid. I also stated that the prior owners and staff members were well aware of my circumstances, and that they had always been very kind, helpful and understanding.

I went into the hospital in October of last year, where I remained for well over a month. In the beginning of December I go to pay my bill for October and November, only to find out that MY ENTIRE UNIT HAD BEEN AUCTIONED OFF. EVERYTHING MY KIDS AND I OWNED - EVERYTHING I HAD WORKED FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE - WAS GONE. EVERYTHING I HAD FROM MY KIDS' BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD - GONE. ALL OF OUR FURNITURE - GONE. ALL OF THEIR TOYS - GONE. THINGS GIVEN TO THEM BY MY MOTHER, WHO IS NO LONGER ALIVE - GONE.

They claimed they tried to call me, but I explained to them once again that I was quite ill and that I had been in the hospital for over a month. My sister told me she had tried to pay online, only to be told that she could not pay just one month; that she had to pay the entire balance at once - which was two months. She called and spoke to the manager and explained the situation, but was told that she had to pay the whole two months, which she did not have. She was doing me a favor and trying to help me out. But she never, ever thought that they would actually end up auctioning off my belongings just because the payments were a couple of months behind.

Then I am told that letters had been sent. I found out they were being sent to an old address that we had not lived at in two years. I never authorized them to send letters to an old address, especially since I had provided them with a PO Box as an updated mailing address; mainly because I never knew where it was we were going to end up. I told them that they should have realized that something was wrong when the letters were being returned by the postal service as us no longer residing at that address. I told them they also had my email address, yet not one single email had been sent to my email address in the time I was in the hospital. I told them the fact that they were unable to get in touch with me via telephone, coupled with the fact that multiple pieces of written correspondence kept being returned, coupled with the fact that the manager KNEW that I was extremely ill, should have been a major red flag.

THE PRIOR OWNERS AND STAFF OF THIS PARTICULAR LOCATION WOULD NEVER HAVE DONE THIS TO ME - EVER. These people are nothing but LOWLIFE LOW CLASS SCUM who only care about money. And the saddest thing of all? Very little of what was auctioned off had little or no monetary value. It was all purely of sentimental nature. The furniture was old, and the toys belonged to young children. There were basic necessities like kitchenware, etc. There was a collection of books that I had been collecting since college - decades and decades worth of books - GONE. Shame on those who buy storage units at auctions, because they are profiting at the expense of others' misfortunes. This says a lot about their character and their level of integrity. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE. THEY WILL DESTROY YOUR LIFE JUST AS THEY DID MINE.

I was a very long-term customer at my little Mom n' Pop storage facility right around the corner from my place of residence - 4 to 5 years. I had the same unit and the same rent in all that time, I paid several months in advance usually and I knew all the folks in the office. A little over a year ago, I got a letter in the mail informing me that the company had been bought out by Extra Space Storage - and the nightmare began. They NEVER gave me a new lease to sign, but began enforcing their own "lease agreement" - with different terms from what I had originally signed. They fired all but one of the original employees, and that one unfortunate person left was forced to apply for the position that she had already held for many years, forced to attend "training" for the position she had already held for many years, and then finally she was "hired" for the position she had already held for many years - at a lower rate of pay and no benefits. (I think she has left since then, but I don't know for sure because I avoid going into the office as much as humanly possible...)

I moved into a much smaller apartment, and so I needed to upgrade to a larger storage unit. The cost of the new unit per month was more than double what I was paying before, but I figured it was a reasonable cost and I had to do it anyway, so I went for it. At this point I was finally offered a new lease. Less than 4 months later, I got a letter from Extra Space Storage, informing me that they were raising the rent! I called them, thinking that there had been some sort of mistake - but no, apparently this is just their regular business practice. I complained and argued with the woman on the phone (a new employee) and she finally relented and halved the amount of the rate hike - trying to make me think that I had gotten some sort of deal.

One year later, another rate hike. I can assume this will continue, unchecked, forever and ever, amen. In addition, I get an email ten days before the first of the month, telling me that that the rent is due. On the first of the month I get an email telling me I am late. Two days later, another email telling me I am late. I go to pay my account and I am listed as "delinquent" - even though it isn't even the 5th of the month. The terms of my lease state that the rent is considered late after the 10th of the month, so what's the what? I am NOT late and I am certainly NOT delinquent. In short, this company SUCKS - and if you have any choice at all I would advise staying FAR FAR AWAY from Extra Space Storage.

Normally they send me out a letter letting me know that my bill will increase. However, this last bill increase they never sent me a letter. The only I knew my bill had went up was because I paid my bills online.

So I immediately called into customer service and let me tell you they are beyond rude. I expressed to them the disappointment of not being told that my bill had increased without any knowledge and that I was a long term customer who always pay their bill on time. They told me that there was nothing that they could do for me and that my situation had to be taken care of by the district manager and that they only take care of new customers. In response to her comments, I told her that doesn't make sense when you know I am a reliable customer that the company is getting a hundred plus dollars from every month and have been since 2011. The supervisor then told me that she understands and to not make my payment that was due that day and she will escalate my situation to the DM, putting in my notes that I am not responsible for any late fees until I hear from the DM.

This was five days ago and today 1/2/15 I received a call from a rep from the ESP, on Preston Highway letting me know that I am past due and that I will be charged at midnight tonight. I explained to that person everything I mentioned above and that I was supposed to speak to her DM, and she told me that he is on vacation and the only way to get in contact with him is by email and her manager has to send it......so I am SOL. Not so much monetarily but personal things that were very important to me (even though they were worth a lot of money). What bothers me is when I was there with the police going through my things I realized how little security (or I should say fake/false security) there are in these units. There are no cameras in the aisles, there is no active security and yet it seems not very hard to get in the door and do whatever it is you want once inside.

I've lost precious things that can never be retrieved. Until there is real security in these facilities be aware that they can and do get broken into. Hearing "oh, I'm so sorry" from personnel doesn't help one bit... not that there is anything else to say. Interestingly, my monthly payment was certainly taken on time without any consideration to the breach in security or the time and pain it has caused me. Beware.

This business (and all the privately owned local storage spaces) were bought out in October of this year by massive corporation Extra Space Self Storage.

So I went in to sign a new contract but found the following: There was no rate structure and they just charged me a higher rate with no price break down. When I talked with rep that there had been a rodent & silverfish infestation with damage - "that was not their problem" but she would contact me about it after calling her supervisor. But she never did and after several calls over a week period. So tried emailing the corporation but they just ignored my email (that was not nasty - only wondering why). So I began to see the writing on the wall - they will probably upgrade the facility and start charging lots more as they eliminate the competition by buying it all out. So I immediately moved out and into one still locally owned place - Aloha Plus Storage - and am very happy with them! They use rodent & insect control and gave me a much better rate! I've worked for ESS for several years and can validate the a rate increase as early as 5 months in, not 3. Please tell the truth, people! No increase ever happens prior to the 5th month. A 2nd increase typically occurs 9-12 months later and increases continue every 9-12 months thereafter. The company has no cap on the amount a customer is charged so the increases will happen as planned on this time table. Rate increases are high! I think customers would be more understanding if the frequent increases were justifiable; however, I've seen customers get a $12 monthly increase, even a $26 monthly increase in one shot.

You may find yourself paying 75% more than a new customer for the same size space and that's because you've been there for 5+ years and have consistently seen one rate increase after another. Is this bait and switch to get customers in the door? No, I don't think so. This company offers extremely affordable rates moving in. Why, you ask? They simply understand that moving is expensive and they wish to save new customers some money. However, the company is in business to make money and cannot charge these low rates long term. I do think customers should be notified upon signing the month to month lease, but we're told not to mention it. Customers get 30 days written notice of all rate changes.

Does the "whole moving and need to save money" scenario work long term? Nope! It explains the 1st increase nicely. I'll explain the other increases by saying increases are the industry standard. Probably not to the degree these folks take it to, but with any short term lease changes happen all the time, including rate changes. For every customer complaining about this practices of ESS, there are probably 30 to 50 who aren't. Know why? For starters the rates are the lowest in the area despite repeated increases. Second, this company provides exceptional customer service and implements safety tactics the deter crime like no other storage company on the map. I guess tolerating the increases is more a matter of whether you appreciate these pro's or hate them.

I'll close by saying I work for the company, I don't own it and have no reason to vouch for them aside from helping consumers weed out comments from disgruntled customers who really have no idea. (3 months? really?) Understand the process. I hope this helps!

My history with them was over the course of 5 years. Not only did they sell everything for pennies, but they now hired a law firm to collect the difference. My items lost was worth 20k in value at the minimum, not to mention the rents over this period, which is in excess of 15k.

In 2011, I was diagnosed with cancer and recently recovering from surgery on more than one occasion. I was forced on disability, which is hard after making over 7k per month. I was at times finding it difficult to make as agreed payments on my storage, but on receipt of a certified letter by them, I was always faithful in meeting this obligation, even if it came down to the wire. History of my account reflects such postings. Last month, I called in to make my payment, but I was informed my items had been auction. No certified letter was ever sent, as I am told they are not under any obligation to do so. One would think a law is in place to make every communication possible when selling one's belongings.

Maybe all of us that have been wronged from this company and their practices should consider a civil lawsuit as a group and find an attorney who would be so inclined to take our case as a whole. I have been with Extra Space Storage for quite a while, and anxious to leave that place. The Pleasanton Manager **, has a "fast mouth", faster than her brains, disregarding Customer's sensitivity, very rude. Prior to the incident, I had mentioned to ** that I would like to move into a smaller storage room. Yesterday, May 2, I saw her close to my storage and requested her presence (for few seconds!) to take a look at the current storage I am occupying, and to tell me which one is available so I would be able to relocate to the new one, less expensive. She was "quick" with her mouth, telling me that she was busy, and mentioned that "SHE WOULD BE BACK!" I've waited for 15 minutes, and as I was exiting, she was joking around with a laborer.

This woman is riding in "her high horse", and she needs some training on how to treat customers, because after all, WE ARE ALL paying her salary. This is not the first time that she uses her “quick mouth” to me, so there are limitations to accept rudeness, especially when I am the Customer! As I've seen sometimes, she always has a little note at the office door, seldom at her post when we need her. Besides that, there is a big sign outdoors "1 MONTH FREE", and ** never presented me with that promotion, and I've have been there for quite some time, and I work hard, and pay my bill "on time" as soon as I get my pay check. PLEASE SEND HER TO A "HUMAN RELATIONS SEMINAR!" `This woman has a quick mouth, lack etiquette, lacks "Good Customer Service!" Mind you that there are some Storage places in the proximities. While proceeding in the items, there comes two small rat (mice) jump out the box and run under my dresser. I was so angry with these people, but more angry with myself because my aunt have a similar problems before and I give them the benefit of the doubt and place my stuff in there anyway.

I never called them same time because I was so not in a good mood to talk to anyone. Now on 5/1/2014 I called and spoke with a gentleman and he was speaking so fast like he doing a 100 mph on the 95. I have to ask him kindly to slow his pace of talking down. He then ask me my unit number and my name and say he appreciated me calling to inform them.... No lie. Their customer service being great ever since, but this is the thanks I get in the end. So it's 4 feet short and was not 10 feet wide. It's little over 8 feet. Now the lease I have says 10' x 30'. When I told them about this, they reduced the price from $163.00 a month to $135.00 a month. And now in March, they raised my rent to $155.78 a month without notice. They just charged my credit card. When I called, they said nothing could be done...

This company hired people with no customer service skills. The agents at the facilities are not only rude but they yelled at their customers. I experienced that not only on myself but on other customer in a different occasion. Two different locations same treatment. The only ones that are helpful are the ones in Utah where the headquarter is located at. My unit got burglarized and the two girls were careless and on top of that rude all the way. No apology, no nothing just a "you got robbed. We don't do refunds. Any other problem you have we can't help you either." You have to talk to the insurance yourself because they don't do that either. They also mention that the place was burglarized like 20 times before in those 3 past weeks. Like it is something normal to happen.

I asked them why they didn't advised their customers and they told me they had no time for that. The company email blast with advertisement. I don't see how time consuming could be email blasting a courtesy warning notice to customers. I asked them if they can provide me with a superior phone number and they remain silence and tried to change the subject. I look it up myself and when I spoke with the district manager, it was the same. She just stick to the script and said that they do not do refunds and that she couldn't do anything else.

I rented the unit for one month and three days. All my belongings and my family's belonging were gone. Just a few clothes and a lot of trashed boxes were left. I had to go again after I took what was left to pick up the agreement that they never sent/email. There are no cameras in the hallways and nothing to give customers the protection we need. Not for oneself or the belongings storage in their units. The prices are a bit cheaper in comparison with other companies but if you are looking to save a few bucks it is better to go with other companies, in the long run it is better for you, your belongings and your pocket. Worst company ever!!!

Extra Space bought the company I had rented from for 10 years. I was closing out a unit and moving my belongings to a smaller unit. I signed the contract because I was told they would call headquarters and get me the new unit rental rate. Only after I signed the contract was I called and told that I was "grandfathered" me into the higher rate I was paying after years of rate hikes and that the contract was binding (payment couldn't be reversed even if I canceled). After I threatened to call a lawyer and file a BBB and state AG complaint, they said they would let me have a high rate if I decided in 24 hours. I found a lower rate online for the same size unit and rented it.

There was no fine print anywhere about price being for new customers. (I work in retail -- offer terms must be disclosed upfront.) When I came in, they refused to honor the online rental saying it was for new customers. I explained about the lack of fine print, showed them the site. They were adamant, but called the main office (mostly to shut me up at that point as other customers were coming in.) Finally, the main office told them to honor the web offer. I had to close out the unit and switch over, which I did. Luckily I followed up as they gave me no receipt for the closure and had no record of it when I checked the next day. I would have been billed for the next month. Cut to 4 months later, and I get a postcard notifying me that after all that stress and drama (I don't usually stand up for myself like that, but they were just so blatant and a lot of their customers are desperate and not aware of the law) they are giving me 30 days notice that they are raising my rate up to what I was paying for the old unit. Right back to the grandfathered rate they wanted to charge me. Scum.

Also, they refused to honor their 'Free one month' rental, they said it was because I went online to reserve the space. Now, only after 4 months they raised the rent. This usually does not happen until after one year. Looking at other reviews on this website, I see other very similar complaints. So, what it tells me is that their advertisements are just a gimmick to get you in and once you are there, they change it and once you are in, they will increase the rates. Only when I showed up late in the afternoon I was told that it would be 10.00$ more, that they must have forgotten to tell me about the mandatory insurance in their rush to get my credit card information for the deposit. I've used a few storage centers over the years and not one of them have ever required you show proof of homeowner or renters insurance or lacking it you have to buy their insurance. What a rip off! Because I had to rush to return the U-Haul truck to avoid being charged for another day I had to pay it against my better judgment.

Now six months later, they just raised my rates by just under ten dollars a month by 12.44% with no prior notification. When I called to ask about it, they told me that they sent the notification to my old address that I moved from. It's the address on my driver's license that I had to provided them in order to get the unit. I didn't have my current address and since they had my email address, why the hell didn't they notify me of the rate increase by way of Email? I'll never use Extra Storage Centers again and will be moving to another unit soon. I'd recommended you stay away from them and try one with more reasonable business practices. This experience has left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

I was told a guaranteed price over the phone in the main system (not the local). Local went with that over the phone, but then after we signed papers, there was an issue that they wanted to increase our price. It was a bit of a pain getting it worked out, but someone else in the company did. However, in the past several months, they have increased our rent three times. A man in the main company had assured me on the phone that we wouldn't find any place cheaper. That was probably initially true, but it turned out we had to move out, which saved us money and at a nicer, newer place where they guaranteed our rate would not increase. When I called the other storage place and asked about their policies of raising rent due to our concern at our current place - he immediately guessed that it was Extra Space Storage - so obviously this is an issue.

I went down to 2 units and within 5 or 6 months, the fees went up yet again - started at 152.00, then to 165.15 and now 184.25. This is unbelievable. The owners are really getting away with ripping people off. There should be a cap on what they can charge, when they can charge it, and increases should not be allowed. SMH. They sucker you in with promotional rates as they did me, but within 5 to 6 months, there was an increase. This really should be against the law. I would only suggest that you use storage for short term usage. I was told that you can pay a lump sum in the beginning to lock in your rate, but this was never offered to me. I am really disappointed, but I need the use of the storage for now, but I would not recommend Extra Space Storage to anyone. It appears that the longer you use it, the more they increase the price, and it's not within a year or two, they increase you payments within months. Before we left, we had asked about a way to pay internationally and they said we COULD PAY ONLINE THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE. GOOD! We went overseas and we paid for the first few months. At the end of October 2013, the website was down and I had no access to my storage. My boyfriend and I tried to call and email them so many times in 2 months but we never got any response. December 5, 2013, we got an email saying we needed to pay extra fees (which was A LOT) or they would put our stuffs on AUCTION (REALLY?). We called them again and now they picked up (now you picking up after 2 months???).

We sure got so many excuses from these people. They told us they were always in the office 24/7 (right! and they did not pick up our call just 5 mins ago), they would not respond to any email outside the USA (WHAT???), and the website was blocked from outside of the USA (now you tell me???). Very funny! We tried to negotiate but everything we could get was THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING. Okay. We decided to pay the extra fees because it was not worth it to lose all our stuffs. I filed this complaint not because I want any money back. It is because I am extremely disappointed with this company and I want everybody to know about this so no one will make the same mistake like I did. I traveled over an hour with my belongings to said storage facility and was told I needed a printed copy of the promotional code that had already been accepted at the corporate level. I then asked the manager to use the WiFi connection so I may produce said coupon. He declined stating it is against company policy to facilitate a customer’s use of a promotional code. In addition, I gave him a flash drive with the promo code and he said his computers don't have USB 2.0 slots. He said just fax the information to the office and everything will be good.

Previous to her calling, I submitted this information to the company, Federal Trade Commission Act (15 USCA 45(a)(1). On day three after getting her message, I contacted her and spoke with her about the deceptive practices (bait and switch) that their company utilizes to procure customers. She was preprogrammed to stonewall any such statement from a consumer.

A week later, lawyers for Extra Space Storage made an addendum to my signed lease contract which states, "Any disputes between you and Extra Space Storage, other than those excepted, will be decided via neutral binding arbitration, as more specifically set forth in the Arbitration Addendum attached hereto. Sadly, Extra Space Self Storage acquired a storage facility by the name of NJ Self Storage on Route 22 in Union, NJ. I used to rent the second largest unit at NJ Self Storage for 4 years and removed my property from the unit back in July 2012. I lost the key to the unit, which they provided for me and informed the previous company. After constant communications with one of the reps, he assured me that they could help me by cutting the lock. I had been making numerous complaints about over $2,500.00 worth of expensive clothes, brooms and mops being destroyed by rat urine and gnawing. The rep and I had come to an agreement over the phone that they would assist me by taking care of the problem.

Well, I received a cancelled insurance letter from Extra Space Storage. The rep claimed that they mailed me 5 different letters and placing phone calls to me. I've never received either. The former company should have had my correct phone number in the system. Besides, I was a loyal customer for over 4 years. Currently, they're trying to send me a huge bill for over $1,800.00. I know this because the post office left a return letter slip on my mailbox. I was confused and called them. Well, the female rep was extremely rude and told me that I should have called them when I received these so-called letters (that I never received) and now she is sending me to collections. I could not believe what she was rudely telling me.

I told her the situation, where the rep with NJ Self Storage (the previous company) and I had worked out. She condescended me and told me that there are no records and they fired all of the NJ Self Storage Employees. I was upset that she was so nasty and told her that I had emptied that unit back in July 2012, and was assured that everything would be taken care of. She told me that they're still going to charge me because they could not cut the lock. I told her that the lock was provided by the facility, because they had to cut my previous lock when I lost that key. She did not care. She was rude and argumentative. I have been communicating with NJ Self Storage and there should be a record. I'm not paying for an empty unit. They should have adhered to their promise to take care of the situation and cut that lock. Besides, they cut it for me once before when I lost my key.

Prior to removing my property, I was a loyal customer for 4 years. I never missed a month. I was only late within the last three months of my tenancy there, but I still paid down to the penny. It's not fair that they can remove a lock when you're still renting the unit. But as soon as you remove your property and mistakenly leave on the lock, they act as if they don't know how to remove the lock. Extra Space Storage is the rudest company that I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I will never recommend them to anyone. I know at least 6 people looking to rent a storage unit, but I'm directing them to go to another facility with another company.

Extra Space Storage in Union, NJ employs a very rude and condescending young lady. If she represents customer service for this company, then they're going to lose plenty of business. It has to be a way for me to get help in stopping them for charging me for an empty unit. They've cut the lock for me when I was renting; they can cut it now. I lost the key. My fight for justice has begun!

I wish I had read the reviews sooner. This is possibly the worst storage unit to ever exist. I had bought a unit in November and every couple of weeks, I would check back on it. Unfortunately, I needed to keep some valuable things there like my guns because I was in the process of moving. After having to go to the unit to get one of my guns to sell, I believe one of the homeless (more on this later) or someone working within the facility had seen me. Almost 2 weeks later in the beginning of December, I came back and there were two huge holes on the inside of my storage unit that had been boarded up. Apparently, these people do not lock up the unused units and the walls are made out of dry wall. Someone had come in and broke through my wall and taken over $5,000 worth of guns, my fishing poles, and countless tools.

After calling the police, the staff admitted to letting homeless people sleep there and were planning to evict them (as if they were tenants). The maintenance person had boarded up these giant holes claiming he did not think anything of it. During this incident, another woman came to the policeman who was talking to me and said her storage unit was broken into. Apparently, many others were broken into as well. They also hadn't had an on-site manager for over a month! A few days later, I came to the storage unit to grab some things and found that the storage facility was still letting homeless people sleep in the open units! This is absolutely ridiculous. Connie ** who is the assistant manager, I believe, told me I could get a free half month because of the problems. Seeing as I no longer have anything of value, I agreed. The new manager, who is absolutely incompetent, has now been calling me saying I owe for one month.

Also, I had got insurance on my belongings and have yet to hear from anyone after calling, mailing, etc. This place is gated and is apparently always upgrading their security services; yet, homeless people are sleeping here. How is this happening?! This place is a disaster! Never ever, ever go here! I apologize for breaking some of the guidelines, but you must understand how terrible this place really is.

We first got behind on the payments of the two units rented by my husband and I, yet there was help to help us get the units we had out of that auction. Then the nightmare came as the management kept us locked out.

Not only locked out but absolutely no access was allowed for myself, who owned mostly near to everything in both units when the management was told my marriage was near to end. Off went my name and my liens I had recorded as not owned by me but a furniture store, and a new rental agreement was made without me in the presence to place values and liens and it was a completely made new account by the property manager. Every time I tried to retrieve the financed furniture to return to the store so no criminal charges were placed on me, the property manager denied me access due to money my husband owed at the time and my lien wasn't recorded when, in fact, the property manager knew it had a prior lien on the furniture in my name only. And now that I was deleted off the account and the new account made in only my husband's name, I was denied ownership rights document of truth in the new lease on property liens and values of assets causing the crime called theft by receiving taking theft of services, oh, and so on.

Many crimes like lease agreement fraud just to save her job most likely and top benefits, the property management had the nerve to say to me the day I went to find help in the justice system (yet would take days before I could save my life's belongings), she said to not worry about my dead child's blue box that she knew the guy personally buying my unit prior to the auction. I have been robbed of my rights by law and negligence actions by this facility in Georgia and discriminated due to personal facts the property manager knew of. So as I called to speak to higher authority she, being the district manager, told me to sue my husband when that would not go well mentally, emotionally and physically due to having children losing a child, losing a home, overcome of domestic relations that follows the teams we have suffered in such a short period of time that one will most likely not reach as many.

So the district manager had discriminated my morals and values as well and had no help for me as to being compensated or collection of most of my life's memories back from the property manager's personal friend who purchased my unit prior to the auction. It seemed like a conspiracy and laws were severely broken in pieces hidden in a computer system in hidden files that can't truthfully be deleted. I would give anything if this business corporation or how big it could be get a government investigation because it hurts when someone has done wrong and gains and walks free. Where is our legal system on this internet? Phone books don't do 24/7 help in matters that leave your mind racing, heart pounding, and lungs gasping when the traumatic event replays until justice is importantly found.

This company has no business ethics, etiquette, concepts of truthful facts or regard for its customers. This place is saturated by mice. They permeated my unit, resulting in thousands in dollars in loss along with grief, inane amounts of time, insane exchanges with employees and having a live litter in the box containing dishes. What is left smells like a zoo. I am stressed and exhausted and my 13-year old daughter is devastated. I could not have imagined this in my worst nightmare. It is my personal Katrina. And guess what? No one cares. I have lost over half of my things due to rodent destruction and the current regional manager, Michelle ** (there have been a few), claims she can do no more after buying me some containers and bags and paying for movers from one of their units to another.

I am going to have to sue to recover myself and my daughter's losses now, a long and expensive process. And they have had the nerve to ask me to leave but I would anyway. They have claimed at various times they are not responsible for rodent control in their own building and business. Not according to city ordinances and case law. The problem first became evident in March and they then told me the mice were isolated to a particular area of the building and were being addressed aggressively. This was by the then regional manager, part owner, VP, who knows. I have heard it all. Same thing in April, May, June, July, August and September.

Numerous mice were in the unit before during and after the move, which took over a week to organize and several hours. I spoke with their Orkin tech who said the treatment they had was in no way sufficient for the property's size or level of infestation. They went the cheap route, clearly. By the way, folks, Orkin does what it is paid to do, period. The site manager, Fred ** (now fired), so admired by a previous poster, is a psycho, rude, unresponsive, lazy, unprofessional and I strongly suspect illiterate. When questioned about the rodent problem for months, his response is, "It's going to take a minute." This is a site manager? The corporate number is answered, when it is, by a woman named Jo, who is just as bad or worse. The owners, Chris Barry and Jean Jodoin seem to think speaking with customers, the schmucks who butter their pretty crusty bread, is beneath them. The only decent employee is a girl that works there, who these idiots set up and fired too. She was pleasant and was sympathetic about the matter. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

I received a letter on 5/17/11 from attorneys Rosenthal, Morgan and Thomas Inc., regarding a collection fee reported by Extra Space Storage. I moved my belongings out of storage unit # ** on 3/26/11. It snowed that day and I was unable to move everything. I left a dresser, microwave and a few other smaller things. The letter states that I owe $280.00. I called Extra Space Storage and spoke with Amy, the manager. I asked what the concerning collection fee was and I was told the fee was for the removal of items I left in the unit. I was told to read the lease I signed when I rented the unit. The lease states that any items left in the unit with no lock is considered abandoned after 30 days and the owner can dispose of it in any manner it sees fit. It also states that I agree to pay reasonable attorney fees incurred with collection of rent.

I do not owe any rent to Extra Space Storage and based on the lease agreement which states the items are considered abandoned, I don't believe I should be responsible for paying the removal fees. I leased the unit for almost 2 1/2 years and whenever I was late paying the rent, I had to pay late fees, collection fees and auction fees. Extra Space Storage could have auctioned the abandoned items and not incurred removal fees. I don't think this collection item is fair and I want to avoid this being reported on my credit, if possible.

On 5/31/11, I mailed letters to Extra Space management, Extra Space Storage and the attorneys regarding the collection and requested its removal. I spoke with Michael ** of Extra Space Management today and was told I was responsible for the removal fees, the item will not be removed and I need to settle with the attorneys.

USA Storage became Extra space storage. I am a US Veteran and good customer for 7 years until new management took over. A live band was allowed to use electricity and I couldn’t. There was no new contract with this management and they don't have a signed agreement. I was never told I could have electricity installed for extra monthly payments. I was told to vacate the facility and had 14 days to do so by August 7th I was out by August 1st.

I came back for my lock and was denied gate access. Two months later I receive a letter stating I owe two months back payments 4 months later collections wants $240 for a storage that’s been empty since August 1st. These managers left the lock on the storage so I would be charged, their letter stated if I didn’t vacate by August 7th they will sale or dispose my items I am owed 1 week money back pay!

I am in the now, since what just happened on April 29th, 2010, I have yet to give up. My complaint will be strong enough to make disadvantages for Storage Facilities that have weak ethics as a business and have hidden agendas that affect the consumer personally. I can only tell you what happened to me. I am responsible for my part in this matter. However, the solution put another twist on my view, the problem is already set up from the get go. I met the requirements to avoid the storage auction. Also, I called letting them know I am within 10 miles away, not sure traffic would hold me up to be on time. The arrangement can be to my favor till the next day, with the knowledge, the auction must go on and if it sells, the buyer is second to receive the sale if the owner forfeits the grace period given. Not with me, my friend who was paying the amount due was not accepted, the auction started. Not knowing what to do, he registered with the chance to bid on it himself.

Can you imagine this, bidding over $1100.00 as a retailer, making this decision based looking at the items inside from the limit line outside the unit, and what you see is what you get, boxes, boxes, boxes that can't be opened leaving the conclusion to be smart and cost efficient. $1100.00 and the amount due I was aware of was less than $900.00. Money was at the site to make payment to save the sale happening. Denied and outbid. There are questions yet to be answered or scams yet to be exposed. This retailer was the only other bidder on site, like clockwork at every auction. I begged him to please let me buy it from him. His response, I can't, too many good things, and sell at the swap meet. How dare you make them a living at my expense?

I have emotional damage. Mentally sick and somewhat physical. I have no voice. No sound for the last 2 days. I had a nervous breakdown and processed the most to be behind me. However, I am scarred and sad I put myself in this situation. All my property: such as personal, confidential, irreplaceable, sentimental, material, business inventory items I rely on to make my financial needs met, contracts that hold legal value, Immigration and Social Security, evidence for lawsuits, all mail that are proof of receipts, bank records, proof of ownership, notarized or not, signed agreements, costly office equipment, clothes, jewelry, gifts to give an idea just some of what I saw go before my own eyes, the most I can't replace unless I win the lotto, 25 years of memories, are in the hands of others. The anger I have is my problem. The risk of Identity Theft is everyone’s problem. I am drained to keep typing; I just want to send this now to get the ball rolling. I have a VM I didn't know till now, that taped part of the after math at the facility. With the time and date stamped. It may be my blessing in disguise. I have suggestions to put on paper that make sense to allow the scams to be lessened.

I have been renting a 5 x 15 storage space with this company for a year now. Recently I went there in the evening to remove something from my space and discovered that the lighting was so terrible, I hurt my back very badly and could not walk for two weeks.
I went online to file a complaint to this company about the poor lighting and discoverd that the space I am renting is advertised on their site for $50 per mo. I have been paying $78 for a year now and they just recently went up to $84. I called the company and pretended to be interesting in reserving the same space and was quoted a prices of $64 p/m. When I informed them that I was already renting that space for $78 and asked why I was being charged so much, I was hung up on by two representatives. I then contated Justin and was told they could charge whatever they wanted and that those receiving the lower prices would get more increases. My price was increased in one years time. I cannot understand how this could be and how many times can they increase the rental amount if more than one year.

In November of 2007, specifically Nov. 9, 2007 I leased a storage space, number 499. At that time there was a special, which was great. I paid thru January 2008, but was not given a contract until April of 2008, at which time I signed and dated with April dates. My understanding upon reading the paperwork at that time was that a NEW lease/contract was being prepared and so I signed and returned the paperwork.

In the meantime, because there had been no contract prior to that, and because I was out of the city quite a bit from January to April, I fell behind on the payments, but did send paperwork to the locale named above and asked them not to auction my things because I was coming back to Austin and making the payments due thru May. Mr. Soliz told me over the phone that he would work with me so that I would not lose my things.

However, apparently during that time, after I had spoken with Adolfo Soliz at the locale and asked him not to auction my things because there was a lot of identifying paperwork with social security numbers, bank info, pictures, etc etc and that I WOULD PAYhe went ahead and auctioned them.

I understand why, because of the past due amount (which he and I agreed that he would hold on off on the auction and that I would pay all back rental fees due). I have spoken with Mr. Soliz on numerous occasions right after the auction and he told me on numerous occasions that the people who bought my things were very good about returning personal papers and items.

I spoke with Mr. Soliz today, August 4, 2009, and have been told that he has no idea who bought the contents of my storage unit; on the previous occasions he told me that someone who owns a thrift shop had bought them. So, his story has changed now. Is there any recourse? my main concern is for my papers...they held identifiers (ssn's, birth certificate copies, pictures, my kids papers from school, immunization records, etc)...

In addition to raising the storage rent without proper notification, and charging late fees when late fees aren't due, I've had a recent scare with Extra Storage Space. I had no problem with Storage USA in Pomona, California - I had until the 11th of the month before I was assessed a late fee. Extra Storage Space took over. I did not know about the take over until I received notice that rent was late for my unit. They assessed late fees and returned my payments. I asked for a copy of my original contract and disputed the validity of the late fees I was paying. I asked the local office where my items are stored, as well as wrote a letter to their corporate office in Utah - after 3 letters - they continue to ignore me.

What has frightened me is recently I started a new job. I was on the job 3 days when the office called me to inform me that Extra Space Storage sent a fax requesting payment and that I call them. I was livid and horrified! I don't know the number to my office - how did Extra Storage Space find it and how did they get the fax number? In my letters to Extra Space Storage, I asked them repeatedly to send a copy of my lease to my po box. They had no additional information on me. I called the local office in Pomona, CA 909 865 8577 and asked for the manager. I was told he wasn't in. I then asked how did he get my work number?

I have been renting a storage space since Oct 2004 from said company. The unit number is 327. Last year the company increased the rent from $109 to $119. Last April 14, 2007 I got a notice that the rent is going up to $204 per month effective immediately. I beleive that this is unfair, given a very short and not giving me a change to look for another storage place. Also, the increase of almost 50% is very drastic. It is kind of a rip-off. Is there any guideline that a company of this kind has to follow? Can you please investigate this matter. Your kind attention will be greatly appreciated.
