I was shipping a vehicle and the shipper gave me the name of the company, American Van Lines. My interactions with the moving coordinator were great. However, we had some issues. We had to leave before the movers came in, so we had a friend who would stay at our place in Connecticut while they packed up. They left my whole washroom. I had an ironing board, brand-new iron, step stool, and all kinds of things in my washroom that never got moved.

When the moving crew got to Florida, they seemed very nice, very friendly, and seemed to be hard workers. But they didn't finish everything the way I had hoped that they would. They didn't finish putting together a vanity dresser in the bedroom. There were a few things that were broken that I didn't notice until after they were gone. I wished they had let me walk around with them before they left. They could have fixed some while they were there, but I wasn't going to go through the house trying to get the company to fix it after. I didn't have any priceless antiques or anything like that. I wouldn’t give them an A-plus, but I'd give them a B-plus. They were all very nice.

We have family in Florida and we moved there. It was difficult contacting someone at American Van Lines. When I call, it goes to voicemail or I don't get a response. The first person that I talked to from American Van Lines did everything very quickly. However, it was hard to understand what she was talking about. After that, she was not available when I got some other people. The crew had to move all of the furniture and there were some delicate items. There was a piece of furniture that got scratched because one gentleman used a dolly. There were also a couple of instances of that with some different pieces as well but, as far as the dishes, there was nothing broken. They used a smaller truck and jammed everything in there. So, things were piled up especially the tools that my husband keeps in the garage. But the guys were good and took care of it.

We had to wait a few days to get all the paperwork done with the bank to actually own the house. Everything was put in the storage down in Florida and we had to wait for about a week. That week came and gone and then, they were trying to get it at the end of that week. So, it took a little while to get the furniture to the new house. They unloaded everything and overall, they did very well. We're pretty satisfied with the experience.

My experience with American Van Lines was awesome and they were fantastic. I had two movers from American Van Lines and they were both excellent. The first move was from Illinois to Indiana and I moved in with my son for a little while. Then I got the second movers when I found a house for myself. My moving coordinator answered all my questions and told me what to expect. Our interaction was great and very simple. My experience with the moving consultant was very good and the crew was great. I can't believe how fast they did everything. Nothing was broken and I was totally amazed by the job they did. It was almost as if they were handling their own furniture and equipment. I would recommend them to anybody who I knew were moving.

I just retired from my job and was moving from Los Angeles to West Palm Beach. I got American Van Lines' services and their rep helped me find whatever I needed and answered all my questions. The quote they gave me was fair. I even asked my real estate guy about it and he also thought that it was a fair quote. I ended up paying less than that because they judged the weight a bit more than what it was.

Their moving crew was also very friendly. They helped me pack my stuff, such as my dishes and furniture. It took them three and a half hours to pack and move. However, I had a piano and they left it on the piano board until I could get my carpeting and my hardwood floor in. So then, I had my piano mover move it in but they've been lagging on picking up the piano board. I've been in contact with them for the last two weeks and they told me that they're working on it. It's getting closer to Christmas and I'm going to have company, so I want it out of there. I also got a few nicks on my furniture and there was also a shelf that wasn't delivered, but it wasn't a big deal.

I hired American Van Lines to move me from Sedona, AZ to Ashburn, Virginia. According to the contract, they had a 21 day delivery window to arrive at my house. They DID not make the delivery window. To compensate, they said that they would pay me a small fee for every day that the delivery was late. My belonging arrived 5 days after 21 days. The problem was that I only received 1/2 of the promised compensation. Customer service called me and sent a check overnight by FedEx to settle the move. It took over one month, but they finally delivered, as promised. In summary, everything else was fine. The movers were helpful and polite and I hope I never have to move across country again. No matter how good the movers are, it is still a hassle.

I called a bunch of van lines then I settled on American Van Lines because of the reviews I saw online. Everybody was nice. Ari was the person assigned to me but they used Cal Van Lines. She said Cal wouldn’t give her any information but when I called Cal myself, they gave me all the information. I moved from Arizona to Virginia and American said that they have three weeks to deliver but it took me a month to get my stuff. So, I called American and I told them that I’m going to spread what happened over the internet. They said that my stuff will be coming in five days and they sent me an email saying they’ll give me $300 to make up for the late delivery and if I don’t say anything negative. I gave them a 5-star rating.

They sent me $150 and I never heard from them again. I think Cal was supposed to give them the other $150 but they didn’t do it. So, I called American and told them that they owe me $150 but they said they deducted it when I got the final bill. I said that I need an accounting of the final bill. American should have the reconciliation bill at the end. I had no paperwork other than the list of the furniture so I could check it off when they took it off the truck. The unloading had been five hours and I helped them unload everything. At that point, the stuff was all over the house. We were all tired so I just signed the bill when they left. The bill said $2600 and it didn’t say $3100. I didn’t use the shuttle which cost $500 so we took it out and the $150 is either in there or not. That money went to Cal, not American.

American assured me that I would only have to deal with them but the big problem was if I hired American Van Lines, I shouldn't have to deal with Cal Van Lines. It's Cal Van Lines that owes me the $150 so American didn't really care. But I can't tell American Van Lines to get it from them, they have to do it because they hired Cal. The only thing they have to do is give me an accounting of the $150 and I'd be happy. I called Ari, our customer service and she didn’t call me back. I even called Sam at customer service and left a message but they didn’t care after they got their rating. I’d tell people not to use American Van Lines.

I was moving my family and the American Van Lines guy that came and did the bid was fantastic. He was really nice and responsive and he was upfront with the cost. It was not the most competitive bid, but he was very outspoken about the value that the crew brings and the company and giving me that extra confidence which was exactly what I experienced. The moving coordinator was great. We had several changes to add on a couple of mirror crates for some wall decor and that was done timely. On payment, I had a little bit of an issue with one of the credit cards. It was 6:00 at night on the day before they were supposed to come, and she was really responsive in going back and forth with me on it.

The moving guys were great too on both ends. They were attentive and they did no damage to my house or to any of my stuff. I also wasn't missing anything which is awesome. I felt bad for the guys upon delivery, though. There were only two of them and my house has a main floor and upper floor and a basement. We had four guys on pick up, so they were pretty extended on delivery. They worked their butts off. I would definitely recommend this company.

I wanted a new place and so I moved to a different area close to work. The moving consultant from American Van Lines was very nice and detailed. She was also very friendly and persistent which I liked because with my business schedule, it's hard for me to follow up as timely as I would like to sometimes. I called and made some changes in the move a number of times and she was able to adjust. She called back on a very consistent basis to make sure the move was still set, and there were no changes I needed to add or adjust on her end.

The moving crew were nice guys and quick as well. They were on top of everything but I felt that the move took a bit longer than it should considering there were three guys. We budgeted it for four hours but it took five and a half hours. The guy who was in charge of the crew that day was halfway for too long and kept going back and forth and said that he’ll just stay on the truck. The two other guys did the bulk of work and brought it to the other guy so he could put it in the truck which wasn’t the most efficient way of handling things. I would recommend American Van Lined but people would need to be more on top of the guys. Had I had another person there to monitor things and made sure things were going as scheduled and were being moved out efficiently while I stayed in the apartment, things would have moved a bit smoother. So, I'd recommend having at least two people there to help.

I was relocating and John, from American Van Lines, originally set the move up. He was very pleasant and he got the ball rolling for me. Then, I was assigned a coordinator who was Marcus. He was a little harder to get a hold of and to get answers from. He wasn't as easily available by phone and most of what I had to do was email. I was extremely nervous about it costing more than I thought it was going to cost and also because I had read some really terrible reviews. I ended up taking a lot of things out and my coordinator worked with me about four different price changes. But the balance was actually lower than what they quoted, so I was happy with that.

The driver and another person were extremely friendly and cooperative. They were the ones I talked to more than Marcus. They did not get there on the day that they said they would, though. They said that they were going to be a little late. There was a hurricane going through where he's moving to. The driver worked it out so that he could move us the following week on his way back through and that was extremely convenient for us. They handled our stuff very well. On delivery, my son and brother-in-law assisted on all the loading and unloading. One of my mattresses' box springs got broken, but other than that, everything was in extremely good shape. I was pleased with the move and the outcome.

My company was moving so I had to move from Torrance to Plano. It was good dealing with the American Van Lines rep who assisted me. I had requested for packing service, so the moving crew packed, and it was a nice experience. It was during the hurricane time and the reps couldn’t contact the head office, but I told them that I had paid online. They didn’t create any fuss about having to get the money on hand before delivering my stuff and I appreciate that. I was also happy that the move took four days. On the other hand, the quote started at about $2,100, but the actual charge finally got up to $2,900. Apart from that, however, everything else was good in my experience with American Van Lines and if I had known about the change in fees earlier, it would have been better.

At the age of 90, my mother who lives in Florida finally realized she needed to be up in New Jersey closer to her family. We got American Van Lines for the move. I went down there, met with the movers, had them pack up, and move her up near me. The driver was great and the crew was good. When I needed to find out when they would show up, the driver was the one who I was able to get a hold. I was very happy with the service that the guys gave. However, I kept getting passed to different people at the office and it turns out there was an issue. The truck was never weighed after it was loaded and after they dropped everything off. And it's frustrating because the move was by the weight. I was really upset that they didn't do it. I think the driver did it but they lost the paperwork in the office. So, I wound up having to pay a certain amount of money, like their minimum fee. I just had to pay it to put it behind us. I never knew what the actual cost was.

There was a guy named Sam who I was working with and he would never call me back. I'd have to chase him to find out what was going on. With all these billing issues, the scheduler said things like, "I'll call you tomorrow." And then, I'd call him up, "Oh, he's not in". "Oh, I have someone else that supposed to call you." They knew nothing about it. They should act with professionalism. If someone calls them up in the morning, the caller shouldn't have to chase them the next day. I'd call and they go, "Oh, yeah. He's at his desk", and then it would go right to voicemail and I wouldn't get a call back. So, it was that lack of professionalism that needs an improvement. And then, some of the things that they wrapped were damaged, some China was broken. But I never put a claim in because, by the time I found out, it was a little too late.

Those people at American Van Lines were excellent. We used them a few months ago and they were awesome. The coordinator was very thorough and asked us what exactly we thought about moving and where we were moving. She also gave us different options on whether we wanted them to pack up our things in boxes and we went with the box option. We got pretty much the full service and it made the move a lot easier. There was no way that we could have ever done that on our own even if we hired a couple of guys, rented the truck and packed things up. The crew contacted me the day before to let me know more or less what time to expect them then they showed up early in the morning on a Saturday. They were in uniform so my wife knew they were from American Van Lines. We opened the door and it was a four-man crew.

They took the time to do everything they needed to do and they disassembled some of the furniture that we had as well as the beds. It took a few hours. Then, they drove to the townhouse and that was another few hours. Everything was like clockwork. We moved to a two-floor townhouse about 18 to 20 miles away and they were able to bring our stuff up to the kids’ rooms and master bedroom. Everything was great and nothing got damaged or scratched. But we left some things in my garage and I’m still going through the boxes and checking things out.

It was a good experience and I have recommended them to friends. I remember looking for moving companies on Google and American Van Lines and a couple of other companies came up. We read the reviews on Yelp and they're one of the reasons why we hired them. Also, the other two companies never called us but American Van Lines picked up the moment we called them.

    This issue has been resolved.

    Original Review: Nov. 20, 2017

In May 2018 we moved from CA to FL. Having served in the Navy for 21 years, I've made a lot of moves. This was by far the worst move I've experienced. Below is a list of issues I forwarded to the company: 1. Of the 3-man crew, only the driver spoke fluent English which unnecessarily complicated coordination during the loading and unloading of the van. It doesn't seem unreasonable to expect that a company named American Van Lines would require that their employees speak English. 2. After arriving at our house at about 4:00 pm--3 hours late--the driver informed us that he had to take one of his crew members to LAX for a 9:00 pm flight. He seemed to be unaware that our house isn’t a 3-5 hour drive away from LAX depending on the traffic in Los Angeles and it takes about 1.5 hours to get through Security at LAX. We advised him that it is unlikely he could get to LAX in time.

Even so, getting his crew member on that flight became his top priority. So, he decoupled his cab from the trailer and departed leaving the inventory responsibilities to one of the locals he had hired to assist with the loading. Shortly after his departure, it became obvious that the man handling the inventory wasn't sure what he was supposed to do. (This was later confirmed at the destination when about 30 of the boxes they off-loaded had no inventory stickers.) The driver arrived back at our house at about 9:00 pm--about an hour after all of our household goods had been loaded onto the van. As it turned out, the driver had taken his crewman to Santa Barbara Airport where he hired a taxi driver who assured him that he would get to LAX in time.

Santa Barbara Airport is a 45-60 minute drive from our house so the driver could have easily made the round trip in 3 hours and been back to our house at 8:00 and the local crew wouldn't have been kept waiting to get paid and we wouldn't have been kept waiting in an empty home for an hour. Seems that he must have stopped for a leisurely dinner on his return while thinking nothing of keeping us all waiting. 3. We had carefully planned the timing of our move as my wife had a commitment to attend her niece's wedding in NY on June 2nd and she had purchased airline tickets to fly there from FL on June 1 and then after the wedding in NY she had to fly to Boston for business meetings We were assured by every American Van Lines employee we talked to that our household goods would surely arrive before June 1.

As the delivery day drew near we received estimates of the arrival. We got a notice that the van would be arriving on the afternoon of May 24th. Later that day I got a voice message from their Operations Manager that a mistake had been made and the van would not arrive on the 24th. And he was right. The van arrived on June 1. Coincidentally, that was the same time my wife's flight took off for NY--and fully 1 week later than any of the estimates we had been given. Having been assured that the van would arrive before then, she had not brought to FL any of the clothes she planned to wear at her niece's wedding or for the business meetings she would be attending afterwards. So now she had to buy clothes to wear to her niece's wedding and also some business attire since she would be attending business meetings in Boston before returning home. This is a good example of how substandard service causes things to snowball?

    4. With my wife travelling to NY, instead of both of us available to direct traffic and keep an inventory during the unloading of the van, there is just me. And let's not forget the 2 manual laborers carting the items off the van and into our home spoke little-to-no English. (And with no driver to supervise them they spent half their timing bickering about the best way to move the heavy items into the proper rooms with the dolly.) Although we had been assured that the unloading would take much less time than the loading, it still took 6 hours. As a result, I was unable to have any dinner until after 9:00 pm. There's that snowball effect again.

    5. The next day when I went into the garage I noticed the sorry state our metal shelving was left in by your crew. It clearly states in our contract that they are responsible to reassemble any items that the disassembled. I've attached photos so you can fully appreciate the lousy job they did reassembling them. All shelves should be the same height. Only 1 of the 6 shelves was fully assembled and there was a pile of unassembled parts laying in one of the shelves. I requested a 15% rebate from American Van Lines but they have not responded.

    Response from American Van Lines

    Dear Mr. Clark,

I apologize for the negative experience you experienced with our company. At a high level, this move looks like a success. Please let me explain.

We were hired to move you from CA to FL with pickup dates of May 15, 16, and 17 and deliver you no later than June 4th for $10,361.05. Please note that we picked you up on time (May 15), we delivered you on time (June 1st), we charged you the exact price of your estimate, and we delivered everything without any damage.

Our driver had to leave the move for a few hours at pickup but the crew left behind was skilled and capable to complete the job properly. I am sorry for the inconvenience this caused you.

We don’t have any notes promising you delivery before the 1st. In fact, on May 19th you called our office and asked us to deliver after May 25th because you were having tile installed. We ended up delivering you on June 1st which was within your contract delivery dates. Since we delivered you on time, I don’t believe it is fair to blame us for your wife not taking the clothes she needed for her business trip and wedding.

At delivery, our movers should have put the metal shelves together in your garage. It was simply an oversight on their part. They forgot to go back in the garage after finishing everything inside your house.

This is in no way an excuse, but rather an explanation of facts. We did offer you a reasonable discount on your move considering we forgot to put together your shelves and for not meeting up to your expectations. You declined and instead demanded a 15% ($1554) rebate which we didn’t believe was warranted here.

If we are still able to mend these issues in some way, we would be happy to come to a reasonable resolution with you.

We were moving cross-country. We checked with the company that had moved us locally when we lived in California. But they contracted that to another company who had horrible ratings so we wanted to go with a national company that’s well-known. American Van Lines gave us an estimate over the phone based on how many rooms and how big the house was. They also estimated certain items that were in the house that were probably heavy, and the estimate came out pretty close.

We never had to use a company like American Van Lines before so the process was new to us. They gave us a window, not a definite, on when they were going to pick up or deliver, which was typical of what I've read. They come in with a big old truck that can hold about three typical households so they schedule it in a way that they're picked up and then dropped off whatever's close and then pick up something else in trying to keep coming across their route. They hit where you are and then, they drop your stuff off so it's hard for them to say what day they'll be here. We closed our house and camped out for two or three days and then they came and delivered everything. If one's not used to this process, it could be a little stressful.

It’s also stressful closing escrow on a house. They think, "Well, it might be they'll be foreclosed," while you can't. Plus, you might have storage issues. Other than that, the people who did the move were the same guys that loaded up the truck that came and delivered. They were very friendly and very helpful too. They did the job as quick as they could considering the load. We had packed our boxes first, but there were things that they packed for us, so everything was wrapped up. They were really good as we only had one broken item. However, American Van Lines’ communication for the customer service could be a lot better as it was hard for me to pin down things. But overall, it was a very good experience with American Van Lines.

I’m changing jobs so I had to move about 800 miles away and I got American Van Lines. The experience was really good with the moving consultant but he underestimated the amount of stuff I had. American Van Lines couldn't get to the move, so they farmed it off to another contractor who brought his truck. But it was not enough to carry everything we had and they were going to charge me another $1,100 because they were going to have to rent a truck and then continue loading. I ended up renting a truck and driving it there myself. The guy that American Van Lines sent took some of the stuff, and I took the rest.

There was a couple of guys who helped with the move, and they were really nice, pleasant people and hard workers. American Van Lines did everything very well but it was a bit frustrating when according to the coordinator, we had plenty of room in the truck. Yet nobody came out and he just did the estimation on the phone, which was a little problematic. Still, I was happy with the way everything turned out. It was pleasant, quick and concise.

I used American Van Lines over a year ago and it was perfect. Their rep came over and talked to me and then we agreed on a price. Then they came over and brought some boxes and I helped pack a lot of the stuff. They packed the big stuff and moved it. They were very good to me and they helped me that I can't say anything bad about the company. The main thing that I was happy with was I happened to have moved three times in Florida in six years and this last move with American Van Lines there wasn't one piece of item missing. They were honest and fair. They kept their word and everything they said. They did everything to the tee. They were perfectly on time. The driver and his two helpers went beyond the call of duty to help me, because I'm older, to get it unpacked and where I wanted it. So I had no complaints at all and I would recommend them to anybody.

We had a second home up in North Carolina and we've got it on the market and we were just moving some items from that place back down to Florida. Their moving coordinator was very good. She was easy to get a hold of and stayed in contact with me throughout the process. The crew during the move was very helpful. They showed up on time and did their job in a reasonable amount of time. Everything just went smoothly. I've done a lot of the packing myself with the fragile items. I packed in boxes and put in big red letters, breakable or fragile. They complied with whatever I asked them to do. Nothing ended up broken as I unpacked my stuff.

I needed to move for work so I looked for van lines online that had decent reviews. I wanted a major carrier so I searched on Google and it kept on coming back to American Van Lines. My moving coordinator was very helpful. It seemed like I could reach him anytime I wanted. He was very responsive and always available. The person who I worked with to estimate what was in my house was very thorough. The end pricing ended up being almost spot on due to her estimate of how much weight we would have.

The moving crew was fantastic and we liked them. They were good, kind, considerate and they seemed to get along well as a crew, which made us feel like they were a family, that we could trust them with all of our stuff. The same crew both packed us up then drove the truck and then unloaded us. They worked very hard packing and then gave us a great time estimate for getting down. They packed on a Monday and Tuesday, drove on Wednesday. And then got to our new place on Thursday, so it was a great turnaround time. They were very efficient at getting things into the new house and into the correct room. Anything they had a question about, they asked us. Our new house is right next to an ice cream store. At the end of their service, they took my four-year-old for ice cream. They were lovely.

However, I wish they would have paid a little bit more attention to the assembling or reassembling of the furniture because they stripped a couple of screws that I think in the future might be an issue for our next move. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a huge deal but that was the only negative that I had. Other than that, it was a great experience. They were quick and efficient, moved all of my stuff, didn’t break things, and they were pleasant about it. We’re moving again next summer and I plan to use them again.

I am writing this review to provide a forewarning to others. Like I did, you are doing as much research as possible in choosing which moving company to select. This review concerns our cross-country move from Los Angeles, CA to Brooklyn, NY last winter. I had originally intended to publish earlier, but the birth of a child and a serious injury ate up much of the past several months. Before I detail my experience for this review, let me qualify by stating in the last 29 years, I have previously moved from NYC to Chicago. From NYC to upstate NY. From NYC to Los Angeles. In addition, over many decades, members of my immediate family have moved from one state to another, crisscrossing the US. Not myself, nor any one of my relatives had anything to match my appalling experience. Before choosing American Van Lines from among a group I’d shortlisted, I did considerable research of my own.

There is a lot of useful information on what to look for and what to avoid when choosing a mover, so do your research but learn from my cautionary tale. Owing to the schedule of my wife’s employment contract, our move was set for December 1st. After finally choosing to go with American Van Lines, their representative told me that most of their cross-country moves take 10 – 14 days. Three weeks, he repeated to me more than once was extremely rare. Thus, even if worst came to worst, we would still be getting all our things before the Christmas and New Year’s holidays shut everything down. The contract we agreed on gave the movers a delivery window of 22 days at the outside. This was not a problem for my wife and I as we were also driving across country and would have with us the necessities of life (inflatable bed, some plates, pots, and pans) so we could wait a bit for the bulk of our things if needed.

American Van Lines subcontracted all the actual moving to another company, CAL VAN LINES INC. who picked up our things over 2 days at the start of December. The 22 days at the far end of the contract came and went and we learned our things hadn’t yet left California. From this point on, every few days we’d get a call from American Van Lines to update us with a new ETA. Each ETA would come and go without delivery, only another call with a new ETA. Finally we were told our things wouldn’t be leaving CA now until after New Years. Our things were finally delivered to us 38 days after they were picked up. After we finished our cross-country drive we wound up waiting for the rest of our stuff for 32 days. When the Van Lines rep called us to notify us that our things in fact would not be leaving CA until about a week after that 22-day limit, they began to negotiate with me for compensation for the delay.

Their final offer was $60 per overdue day in exchange for my not posting or saying anything negative about my experience. At that point however our things still had not arrived and I felt I couldn’t agree that I wouldn’t have anything negative to say, so I didn’t feel I could accept. Before hiring them, I had done my best to gather as much information as I could in choosing this company and it was still an unmitigated disaster. I wanted the next person in my situation to at least also have my experience to consider before choosing whom to hire. Long distance movers disassemble and upon delivery, reassemble all furniture. That is standard and was stipulated to by the movers when they were hired. The two guys who showed up to deliver all our things In Brooklyn arrived without any tools, even though they knew they would be expected to reassemble several pieces.

As it happened, every piece of furniture that had been disassembled arrived missing parts making reassembly impossible. Tabletops and desktops arrived without the legs or leg support system. Also, Several pieces of furniture including 2 antique pieces were destroyed. We are also missing numerous CDs and some books. There are always minor damages to some things during a big move and we had those as well. I don’t include details on those because they are standard, even with a very well executed cross-country move. The movers did a trace to try to locate the missing items but weren’t able to locate any of them. We paid over 6k for the move. After the late delivery, Cal Van Lines, Inc. (the actual movers) paid me the contracted $30 per overdue day late delivery fee – about $500.

American Van Lines again offered me about $700 for their role in this move, again on condition that I agree in writing not to ever say, write or post anything detrimental about my experience. It was American Van Lines whom I had hired and held ultimately responsible for the totality of the move. I must make clear, these sums were for only the lateness of the delivery. Actual lost and damage claims are handled separately by movers. This review is not at all a reflection in the companies handling of damage or loss claims. By now I was thoroughly disgusted with the company and unwilling to take the money. I didn’t feel it at all compensated me for the tense strain my wife and I experienced with this move, the hours and hours of talking with the company reps about the situation while waiting for our overdue property or the hassle of having to go through a long claims process.

Worst, I didn’t feel the company actually felt genuine remorse at their unprofessional and indifferent service and all my final dealings with the company just repeatedly confirmed me in this opinion. Before concluding I want to make one positive statement about my dealings with both movers. I feel that American Van Lines’ attitude to its customers’ experience is indifferent, miserly and disingenuous. However, I must say every human being I dealt with were very nice and did do their best to try to reconcile their responsibilities as company reps with the deplorable performance of their company overall. Both pairs of movers who did the actual picking up and dropping off of our things were very hard working and easy to deal with. American Van Lines dispatch coordinator Sam **, who had the crumby task of continually apologizing to me as each new deadline for delivery came and went, was hard working and always available.

I think all these people who performed their various tasks were set up to fail by a very hands-off and unprofessional coordination between the two moving companies which underscored the actual disinterest on the part of the corporation(s) in doing a cross-country move responsibly and effectively. Bottom line: I know moving things across country is difficult to do and I know that some sort of mishaps and even possible property damage is possible. Perhaps to some degree it’s even unavoidable. If you can, try not to move around major holidays – it was unavoidable in our case. If you have to, DO NOT USE American Van Lines or Cal Van Lines, Inc. The officers of these two companies could care less about what happens to your things and it shows!

    Response from American Van Lines
    Hi Tristan,

Please accept our public apology for the delay and damages you suffered on your move. Even with over 100 trucks and trailers on the road today, we could not get our driver in position to do your move directly. Instead, with your approval, you worked with one of our agents to complete your move from CA to NY. We hold our agents to the same high standards we expect from our drivers. Sadly, our agent failed you and so did we. Earlier this year, we were working with you to fully compensate you for the 17 days we were delayed delivering you. Thankfully, the furniture damage you suffered was being paid by the insurance company already. We were under the impression that we came to a mutual settlement which fully compensated you for the delay. Our offer was much higher than the amount you stated below. Then you went radio silent for the next 6 months and we never heard back from you until now. We have tried to reach you again to continue discussion in hopes we can still come to a reasonable resolution. Our intentions are to still work with you towards a full resolution if you are interested. Please contact our office at your earliest convenience.

My grown daughter, a single parent, and granddaughter need to move back to Arkansas, North Carolina and she needed help. I wasn't able physically or just time-wise, to get it down there and do it all myself so I had to figure out what was the best mix of her packing it and somebody else moving it. I got prices from two other companies and American Van Lines’ price was significantly lower. I also looked at the U-Haul option and American was probably about $500 maybe more than U-Haul. But at that time I figured the rental, the gas, the insurance, and everything else, and the plane ticket to get out there to pick up the U-Haul. So for 500 bucks and somebody to help load and unload stuff, that's a no-brainer.

Also my interaction with the moving coordinator was extremely positive. We had an unusual move and they were willing to work with me. Normally a moving company gives you like a two-day window and because it was on a school campus and everything enrolled we had to have a specific day. And they said fine and scheduled the move. On the day it was supposed to happen the truck of the guy who was supposed to pick this up broke down in Florida like the day before. So obviously it was not going to happen.

The initial person said they couldn't resolve it. I said they needed to get me somebody higher and 20 minutes later the supervisor called me, looked into the problem and developed a work-around and everything went off smoothly. Their ability to resolve it that was quite frankly very impressive. They had another truck scheduled. They said, "Well, we said, we'd be there between 10:00 to 12:00 and now the next truck won't be there till 12:00 to 1:00," which for me is no big deal. And they made it happen. It's very impressive. So no fuss, no mess, no like "God, you burned us out.” I've heard they were very apologetic for the hassle and the delay.

My wife and my daughter packed all the boxes but they had to pick up from two different locations and the crew was well-versed that they had to go to two locations. They had the addresses. They communicated with my daughter saying, "We're going to this location. So, is that okay? Can you meet us?" She had things in a U-Haul storage unit that they had to pick it up so they did all that and picked it up. And because my daughter had her apartment on a school campus they had to go like up, down, around, and going to have to back the building and they loaded it up. There was no problem and without a whole lot of grumbling or "We're going to charge you an arm and a leg extra because you make us actually work hard." They just did it very efficiently, very quickly, and did it on the time limits that they had given it.

And then when they had to unload, that went too. My experience mirrored the positive online reviews. I'm retired army so I moved a lot and this move was nerve-wrecking but more on edge because there was a certain time limit. But American Van Lines did a very good job. They kept us informed, straight and honest and had good with follow throughs. A couple of the big moving companies roundup and wanted $1,000 to ship out a one-way move plus $300 for the additional insurance, $600 to fly out and get a truck and $400 if I got Three Brothers Moving Services to help. The total is just under $3,000 but when I got done paying American Van Lines I paid $3,400 and some change for a thousand mile move. It saved me a lot of time, labor and headache for only a difference of a few hundred dollars.

I recommend American Van Lines. I communicated with them clearly and knew what I was getting into. American Van Lines was very honest because they said if we went over 5000 pounds they were going to charge us incrementally for what we were over when we use the truck. They made sure I understood how they charge. It was refreshingly candid and honest.

I searched online and read some reviews and then I found American Van Lines. It’s for a move from West Coast to East Coast, a two bedroom apartment move. I called them up for a quote and they gave me the quote pretty quickly and set up to pick up on all those things. The entire process was smooth except for few last-minute changes and when they started charging few things based on a distance between where the truck stops and where my house is located, and based on the distance anywhere from where the main door is located.

When they put the quote, it looks like they’re putting it based on the distance from the main door of the elevator to the elevator where they can pull the truck closer. But once the truck came in and the truck driver started while waiting, how far it is so then he’s letting me know that there will be additional charges, which I understand. But they should’ve gotten that information first while they’re getting the quote outright so they could have asked me how far the place is approximately, from the front door to where this big truck can come closer, so that they can do a better estimation. Other than that, I was happy with the service.

The rep who helped me with the planning was good. The customer care also, whenever I called, they responded. The moving crew was great too, as well as the driver. He communicated from the beginning to end, he told me where he was and how and when he’s approaching. I had a satisfactory experience and I would definitely recommend this service. They were able to accommodate my request and walk me through the process. This was the first time I was doing the move and it was a long distance one as I was moving from Florida to California. Their reps were professional and they answered all the questions that I had. There were just one or two things and probably this is across the industry or the way it works. I was requesting if somebody could come and take a look at what I have, and that way there will be no surprises on the day of pickup.

However, I was told that it's not possible and told me how it's done. They get as many details over the call and they prepare an estimate based on that. Then on the day of the pickup, if the person who picks up the goods finds that something is not appropriate or something was not mentioned clearly in that call, that estimate may vary and there could be an additional cost. I wonder if there is any way to close that gap. The crew who came here did their job and there were no additional things that they demanded so it was all proper. I like their service and it's been a positive experience. I already recommended them to a few friends.

We planned for them to take the whole day to take care of stuff, but they had it done easily in half a day. They had it all unpacked and put away in our storage bins in about two and a half hours. They were nice and set it up for that day, but then I was going to be down there that weekend, so when they said that nobody was going to be home to receive the delivery, they were supposed to let me know. So it was not a very good experience in that situation because I didn’t feel that they listened to me. I was very upset because I said I was not going to be home to accept the delivery.

The customer service girl called me and said she couldn’t do anything about it, and I couldn’t cancel it because it was only 24 hours. I ended up having to hire someone to come into my house for the delivery. I was in North Carolina, so it was a bit stressful. But as far as the move went, that part was okay. The movers themselves were good. I got my stuff and it wasn’t damaged. The transaction ended up working out, but it wasn’t the best. It cost me a lot of anxiety. Though I know they don’t always know what their timeline is going to be and where the trucks have to stop, they should have worked a little harder to try to accommodate me when it was a big day for my daughter.

    Hi Meg,

We apologize that you felt inconvenienced with your move. Please understand that our agreed contract with you included us picking you up on 5/11 in NC and delivering you the next day in WV. The day before your pickup, you informed us that you didn't want to accept your delivery on the 12th because you had your daughter's graduation. Unfortunately by then, it was too late to change our truck's schedule. We were thankful that you found somebody to accept your delivery. I am glad you liked the movers and that we didn't damage anything. We are very surprised by the 2 star review considering the move was perfect except for the delivery confusion that wasn't our fault. I hope in the future you will still consider our company for any moving needs.

When I called them, I got a really favorable quote within 20 minutes of the conversation and they were able to accommodate my work schedule so we decided to go with them. We already packed everything and moved the small items so they just moved our furniture. They were very quick and efficient. They were like clockwork and they finished the project in less time than they quoted me. They wanted to get the project done before the storm came in, so they brought in an extra hand and didn't charge me for his help. They were very good.

When I listed my property, all the moving companies started sending postcards. Peter who was the man I had dealt with was the reason I went with American Van Lines because he was very informative and a very nice person, and I just felt comfortable with them. The only bad thing was that we moved the day after Christmas. Two guys called in sick and so they didn’t have enough movers. They didn’t finish our job in time. It was getting dark so we had to stay in a hotel because all our stuff was in the truck. We hadn’t planned it because we thought they were going to be done. But it was just a small inconvenience and they did a fine job. A few things were broken, but you kind of expect that, and it wasn’t anything near and dear to our hearts. I called them and they said, “Oh, well, too bad”. Nevertheless, I’ve recommended American Van Lines since then.

I went to the Better Business Bureau and American Van Line was one of the recommended ones. I also got in touch with one of their rep and she was so good at selling me their service that I took it. They gave me a quote based on the boxes and things that but after they loaded the truck and checked everything, they gave me $300 back which was good. The person who did the move was very professional and delicate. I was so happy that they brought mats and took them inside the house before they started doing things inside. They kept the carpet clean and the new house has hardwood floors and they were very careful not to get anything dirty.

American Van Lines has been very professional and clean. They take care of their customers. They kept me posted all the time. They also gave me a phone number for the person that was taking care of me and I could call him anytime. They didn’t mind answering everything every time I called. That’s another thing that is very good because I’m an old lady and old ladies keep asking questions. However, the thing I didn’t like about them was that from the beginning, they didn’t tell me the exact day and time they’re going to pick up the stuff. They instead give me a window.

The moving coordinator was very enthusiastic and very professional, and it gave me a sense of confidence. I liked the crew that helped me during the move. However, there was a little bump in the service that I received because they were working with the apartment personnel in my building. Somehow, there was a misunderstanding between the building personnel and the crew as the crew needed to request access to the elevator when they needed it. They didn't do that and we ended up having to wait a lot longer for the elevator, not realizing what was going on.

It cost me extra hours worth of moving because they didn't speak up that it was taking a long time. I figured out the problem at the end of the move. The crew should have communicated to me sooner when there was an issue. Other than that, the crew was great. They were professional and worked really hard to get the job done fast. American Van Lines was effective and I appreciated their professional and positive approach to the work.

I got a new job so we moved from coast to coast and American Van Lines had my stuff where they needed to be. Their moving coordinator was really good and every time I had a question, he got back to us quickly. One guy took our information and the other one was our point of contact if there were issues along the way. He told us when the truck was going to be there, checked it periodically to make sure that we had the right weight amount and if we had to add or take anything off, he did it for us so our moving estimate would be updated in real time.

Also, the two moving people from American Van Lines hired a local one. They packed everything fast and got the truck loaded. The driver and his cousin moved it to the other country in time and unpacked it quickly too, so it worked well. On the other hand, AVL was pricey but moving was one of those hard things because it's not something people do most of the time, so it's hard to get a price point on it. But, overall, they were reliable and I had a good experience with them.

The other ones would transfer me to another person and their communication in between didn’t’ work out, and I got frustrated with them. The moving crew was great. I even tipped them because nothing was broken or missing. I moved from California to Portland, Oregon, and so I flew up and met them at my house. They were moving stuff when it was snowing. They did a great job and I would recommend them.

American Van Lines was really professional and they said what they were going to do. That was another problem I had with the other moving lines - they gave me a guesstimate of, “We’d be here within the estimate of 7 to 15 days." That didn't help me when I’m flying up, because I didn’t want to wait around for a week. American Van Lines was within 2 or 3 days so that was a great benefit for me because I needed it. They said that they were going to be there Monday or Tuesday. I flew up Sunday night, I was ready for them, and sure enough, they were there on a Monday afternoon. I would definitely use American Van Lines again whenever I have to move. They were not the cheapest, but they were right in the middle.

My realtor recommended American Van Lines and a gentleman came and gave me an estimate. This move was back in February but it was after they left that I started going through stuff that I became a little unhappy. I had two Queen-sized beds and they reversed the frames. If he would have waited to put it together until I got there, I could have stopped it. But now I've got to get somebody to come in and undo them because they squeak. They also damaged the top of a hutch that I have that is well over six feet high.

Aside from that, they also put a really deep gash on my headboard for the bed. I've got to get somebody to come in and take care of that as well as nicks on the dining room table. All they had to do was wrap it in blanket and it would have been shielded. They could have slowed down and cared a little bit more. It's little things like that that are irritating to me now. I didn't call them as it had been months now.

I ended up going out buying a new dresser and bedroom furniture. We had to get a hotel and stay in there for five nights. The whole thing was a nightmare. I’ve got a claim on my desk but I’m not going to file it because it’s not worth the ache. The claim through the company was only going to pay $90 out of the $800 that the bed cost. I’m telling everybody not to use American Van Lines and I wouldn’t use them ever again.

My horrible experience started with the company calling me a few days before my scheduled pickup date. The date was changed because there were no drivers available. When the movers arrived one driver complained about how “inexperienced” the other mover was. Interesting the delivery movers made the same comments. To that end there were several items broken or missing. Specifically, lamps, picture frames, glasses covers for large pictures and bed frames were broken. All screws and metal structures from furniture dismantled by the movers were missing. Finally, my coffee table leg was broken when the mover was trying to determine how to dismantle the table. Consumers beware.

Over a year ago, I shopped at all the different carriers that do house moving in my area. I asked for quotations and got different ones. Then a personable fellow whose name was Allen had a quotation that was below what other people offered. He was from American Van Lines. And since I was dealing with a national carrier, I believed they were all going to be in the same quality of service. I also wanted somebody I could trust and a big name meant something to me.

The guys who delivered were pretty fast and they didn't take a lot of time. They did what they needed to do and everything was stored on the truck for a day and a half before they could come to the new property. But the driver that was running the crew was not the most personable person in the world. And they damaged one major piece. I had to make a claim on a piano because it wasn't loaded properly on the truck from the first house. They admitted it was their own fault. They didn't take enough care. Somebody left it on the dolly and it had no support. So moving it in transport truck broke the piano in half.

Although they paid the claim, the piano happened to be a family heirloom and what they gave me was peanuts. You can't replace something that's been in the family for two generations. Besides, it took a month and a half to get the claim resolved. In the end, they also started telling me that the price that was quoted was wrong. That they wanted to charge me 15% more than what the price was quoted. I didn't pay that because a quotation is a quotation. It says right in writing that my bill will not be higher than this amount.

But I had to argue with them to get that settled since they told me the quotation was wrong and we had this many more boxes. I insisted that they saw what had to be packed - the photographs, the stuff in the china cabinets, and the furniture. They knew everything. They have been doing this long enough that they shouldn't be making a mistake of 15%. It took some pushing and shoving, and also with Allen's persistence, it was all resolved eventually. He was the best liaison and I would recommend anybody to call him back. Overall, my experience with American Van Lines was challenging. There were errors and some problems and they were all taken care of, but it took persistence on my part, and my work with Allen, to get this satisfied in the end.

Also, the moving coordinator lined me up for the days they would be here. They wanted me to count how many boxes I had, what kind of weight they were talking about and how much furniture I had, so they had some idea. Everything worked out well.

The driver was a nice guy as well and was willing to work with me. However, they couldn't get to my house as close as they wanted to. So, I put my trailer on my quad and made it easy for them. They loaded the furniture on my trailer and everything got to the truck instead of them running back and forth. It's easy to work with people than against them. Also, I've seen their trucks around over the years. The movers were helpful and cheerful, and they worked hard. They cared about our stuff and they weren't rude when they dropped it off. However, I wasn't happy with the final move. The scheduling seemed fine upfront. And then, at the last minute, they couldn't find somebody to ship my stuff but they finally got a company that was willing to pick up the job and the folks showed up. They did the crating they needed to do and seemed fine the day the things were packed under the truck. But the unloading was less pleasing.

And then, I ended up with a missing box. I didn't realize what was missing because there were two tags on one box. The driver picked up on it right away and was in a big hurry to get out of my house at delivery. They unloaded and wanted to go fast. They had somewhere else to go. He was like, "Oh, just sign right here. We'll take care of this. This will all be taken care of later. Don't worry. I'll take pictures. And I'll start the process for you." He took pictures, but he didn't start the process for me. I felt used because the driver was in such a hurry.

I was not happy with American Van Lines' customer service on the side of the claim. The letter I got was cold. The company refused to acknowledge that there was a missing box because they said that I had signed that everything was there. I never got the box and was never compensated for it. It was harder to move back than it was to move down because I used to have a big truck and moved a lot of stuff on my own. So, when American Van Lines came down to move, I had to sell my truck and empty it having a lot more stuff to move. The moving guys didn’t like to move my toolbox that weighs 300 pounds but they handled it. They only broke one glass shelf, so that was pretty good. I would recommend American Van Lines. There were discrepancies at the time of delivery but everything was fine because they delivered with no items damaged and everything intact. I referred one of my colleagues to American Van Lines.

It was the first time I used American Van Lines and it was for a cross-state move. At first, dealing with the coordinator was fine and it was more of the back-end, trying to find where our stuff was and when it was coming in. Some of the people were very nice and helpful. Others didn't return calls and hard to track down. But it's the normal average service.

It took two weeks from when they picked the furniture up till the end. There was some damage to the furniture and they were late. But the crew was great and very nice. They just need to improve on getting back to you after your stuff has been picked up. They were good in getting back to me before the pickup date but once it was picked up and you have any issues, it took a lot of calls to get through to somebody.

We had one issue 'cause we were moving a piano which was a little different and they helped us with that. And although we didn't utilize the services that they offered, they helped us with the services that we got. But there were three little things that we didn't notice were missing until we needed them. We felt they were on the truck but for some reason, we didn't get them. I made a phone call about that and I was told that somebody would contact me but I never heard another word from anybody. I just dropped the issue because the items were insignificant and not worth the effort. Other than that, they were efficient and on time.

However, we're told that it would take a short number of days to get our things to our destination but they came early in the given window. They got there a day before closing but we had found out that might happen, so we were prepared. We had asked the people whose home we were buying, through the Realtor, if we could get it early and we were able to get in the house early. And that was the only issue we had. The movers were really sweet and amazing fellows. And all in all, it was a good experience. Nothing was broken and missing. So, they did a fine job.

The guys were very fragile doing my furniture, wrapping it. They were very calm and collective while they're moving everything. Khadija, the moving coordinator, was amazing. She'd tell me, "They're coming now. They're leaving now. They're doing this, they're doing that." She would call me during the day and say how they're doing. They were so polite and so on time. Nothing was as that good ever in my whole life. It's on point with everything. American Van Lines have been tremendous and very caring like they're moving their own furniture. I was in North Carolina and I had to move to Massachusetts. I was just starting to do my research when I picked up something in the mail about American Van Lines. So, I put them in the list of people I should look into. The guy who organized the move all together was great and nice. He took care of everything. However, there was one little disconnect that happened. I had to move my stuff from my house, which I sold and I had to close on, into storage and I didn't know how long it's going to be in there. I had the same guy who coordinated all of this and then moved it out of storage up to Massachusetts. Some of the directions that were originally given were not passed on to the next group because when my things arrived up here, the bed was put on a lot of things.

Also, although I supposed I should be able to expect certain scratches and rubs since it's a long move, there was a lot of scratches and rubs in everything. Another thing I didn’t like that the movers did is that they broke the leg off of a bench and they didn't tell me about it. They just propped the leg up and put boxes on top because half of the things was going into my garage. And because I moved into a condo and I was unpacking a little at a time, I didn't find about that until three months later. I was really disappointed with that since it’s a nice bench that I really liked. Other than that, American Van Lines was pretty good and organized.

My husband and I were moving from Buffalo, New York to Knoxville, Tennessee. Both of us are starting with our PhD programs. The quote we got from AVL was accurate and the actual payment came under the quote which was nice. However, towards the end when we actually had to move, it was a little confusing. There were some fluctuations in the dates and there were changes with the people who were handling our account various times.

On the other hand, the crew was excellent. They had people coming from both ends that were locally sourced and then they had Patrick that stayed with the move consistently. We had them pack our TVs and some of our artwork. They were also very friendly, worked fast and were on time. They were very cognizant of making sure they have laid down the mats and not track any dirt. They set up our furniture the way we wanted it to be set up. Although we had a few items that were broken, they were very diligent in taking pictures of those items and they even identified a couple to us that they had noticed.

In terms of the things that were broken in the move, the movers were fantastic with that. But when we went to the business side of it to actually file a claim, the process has been very difficult. They haven't really been very forthcoming with information. They've just sent us a claim form and when I've called to actually discuss the claim form, no one's really made themselves available. Our TVs have been broken and when we called, they said that all they would provide was $0.60 per pound and it's a flatscreen so we're going to lose a TV because of it. A piece of artwork was also broken that we've had to since get rid of because they're not going to reimburse us that much for it.

It got to a point where my husband and I knew that we were just going to lose out. We just stopped following through with the claim. They wanted us to get a repairman to come in and look at all the things that had been broken and given how much we were going to get reimbursed, the cost to actually get those analyzed seemed to be more than what we're even going to get back. All in all, the business side of AVL is very inefficient, but the movers themselves are fantastic.

I liked that American Van Lines is also headquartered in Florida where we are from. The price was very competitive and they were good about getting back to us. Other companies got back too late and one had a better price but were not as together. The intake person I spoke to was very thorough and we're back and forth a lot of times before we finally decided on our final deal. The lady who was assigned to our transaction made sure that it went well. The driver was awesome and professional. He got a crew from Sacramento who met him at the house and got everything disabled, packed and loaded into the van on a Sunday. They got everything well done on Monday. We had a plan to meet in Tennessee about a week later and we ended on a Friday. He was right on time.

We had a problem with the contact crew who was supposed to meet the driver in Nashville. They got lost and turned their way back. We discussed this with the lady who signed our case and another crew was dispatched but they got lost, too. So, the driver was here by himself until 9:00 at night. Some of the furniture was really big and heavy and we had people helping us at the house on moving our boxes and our stuff from our rental truck although the driver insisted on doing it mostly by himself. I never thought he was strong but he said that he’s been doing it for 21 years.

We went through the checklist at the end and everything that we loaded came through considering that they took other loads in their truck. I was impressed at how well he handled the delivery. He had to get finished because he had to be in Lexington the next day. Something fell down on the subcontract side but we've been debriefed afterward and we wrote our experience. We're totally pleased with American Van Lines and would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to other people.

    Original Review: Oct. 5, 2017

We lined up a move to a different address with American Van Lines five months ago. We had our coordinator, Allen, who answered our questions and gave us a good rate. On our first move, we were scheduled to move one day and deliver the following day. But since our landline phone was disconnected, the driver couldn’t call us to inform that he’s on his way so he turned around went back. We had previously given the cellphone information to our coordinator, but in any case, it didn't get turned on.

We also got a phone call the night before the scheduled move and were told that the moving truck and driver would arrive between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. We indicated that it’s going to take three to four hours to load the truck and the condo we’re moving in doesn’t let us use the elevators beyond 5:00 pm so it wouldn’t work if the driver would come between those times. So she contacted the driver who said that it will work but it didn't. They came at 11:00 and were finished loading by 3:00 and they told us that they can't unload and that they’ll come back the next day. So, we had to check into a hotel without any medications, clothing and toiletries. The driver caused a number of damages and scratches during the move but he fixed them. Also, we were missing a beveled glass top to a triple dresser and a small end table. The delivery was totally unsatisfactory and going forward, we would not recommend American Van Lines again.

American Van Lines has really good reviews so we ended up calling them. Their representatives were great. They were attentive, professional and able to take care of our needs. Everything was perfect except on the day of the move. I don't know if they've ever done a move in New York City before, but there was a big miscommunication. The truck driver had a hard time getting to my apartment because there were roads in New York City that don't allow 18-wheeler trucks. The driver called me and asked how to get here and if I can get the directions but I don't know which roads in New York City allow 18-wheelers or not.

Then the truck driver called a middleman who wasn't really who I've been working for. She also called me and I tried to explain what I thought. There was a lot of calling back and forth and some things that I didn't really know the answer to. That was really hectic because I didn't know it. They had a little traffic coming and that delayed them a little bit. They kept in contact with me if there were any delays. They let me know what was going on. When they dropped my things off, they were early and that was awesome. The actual movers were wonderful. Nothing was broken or missing. I got everything back. It was amazing.

They reached out to me and resolved my issues to my satisfaction. I would definitely use American Van Lines again if I am ever in need of a moving company.

    Original Review: Oct. 2, 2017

I researched American Van Lines - their price, the drivers and the people who loaded and unloaded the truck because I needed those to be local. I also knew people who moved from Tennessee to Massachusetts and somebody who moved from Texas to Massachusetts and they told me what travel company they use. They told me not to use American Van Lines so I stayed away from them, but I was looking for long distance. I called them and told them what I had to move. However, everything was fine until they charged me $35 for a box to put my mirrors and my pictures in. They were re-used boxes that I had on my pictures because they were about four inches thick. They were ripped and taped together.

So, I called the moving consultant who I spoke with and sent the pictures of the boxes. She called the driver and told him to use new boxes. He started using new boxes but after that, he was uncomfortable and if I asked him a question it was just a quick yes or no. It was like if I had a problem with him, I needed to talk to him. Also, what really got me was that I had somebody come over to be there on Easter Sunday because I was still in Massachusetts, but no one could make it. They wanted to get it done on Sunday and work the next jobs so they could get paid more. I understand that but they should have said they couldn’t do it on Easter and it will cost extra $250 to do it the next day.

They even moved my furniture to take the other furniture of the truck. I had broken pieces on our desk that we paid $400 for not even a year ago. The whole corner of my entertainment center was chipped off about two inches as well and I couldn’t use it so I threw it away. I only moved two bedrooms, living room set, coffee table, two desks, entertainment center, TVs, and all my kitchen stuff. If you took into consideration what I moved and that I would get paid by weight, my entertainment center which was about 100 pounds would be 50 bucks. It was a hassle trying to set a claim for that and not worth it.

On the other hand, everybody I spoke to on the phone was great. If they couldn't get a hold of me or the girl who was working with me, they would leave her a message and she would call right back. If I had to add something or take something off, I would tell her and she would note it. The guys who picked up the stuff at my house were very professional as well and they worked hard. But once American Van Lines came to the house, it's all downhill from there. I would never use them again.

I called around a couple of different places to get quotes, and had a very difficult time with a couple of other moving companies. In one call, a company told me that if I couldn't tell them everything I needed to move, they can't give me a quote. With American Van Lines, I spoke to a very nice sales representative and gave him an idea of what size storage units I was moving. He asked questions like how full they were, how high it went and whether I had any expensive and fragile stuff. That guided me and then he gave me a quote. He told me he was going to pad it and I asked why. He said that when it's all over and done, it was going to be less instead of more. It was very reassuring because the price came in right within our budget and it was a very easy process.

Afterwards, I met the guys at the storage unit and it was an all-day pack up for the two storage units. They were amazing and I couldn’t believe it. They were fast and thorough. Everything was wrapped and protected, and they were working as a team the whole time. They left Texas before I did and then I was afraid they were going to beat me to the house in Tennessee. My husband was there but the unpacking was a little bit of a problem. They could not get the big truck into our driveway so they got a smaller truck, offloaded from the big truck into the smaller truck, brought it to the house and offloaded again. They ended up being delayed but they still did it in a day and before dark.

American Van Lines' work ethic was amazing in doing the whole thing, including taking boxes back with them and putting the furniture together. They even held pieces while my husband and I put little felt pads on the bottom so it wouldn’t scratch up the wooden floors. And then, I got this beautiful phone call from my representative, explaining that they had the weights and that they had to charge me for the small truck but I still ended up getting a refund back from what I had paid because it had been padded. It was a great price for the quality I got.

They did make us feel better about the situation in the end and helped to explain the issues. I have raised the review by 1 star as they did try to make things right but the actual move itself was very unpleasant and the effort to make things right came later than it should have.

    Original Review: Sept. 26, 2017

We had a very bad experience with this company. We hired them to handle our cross-country move from California to Minnesota. They contracted out the pickup without telling me and an unknown company showed up on the day of my move. It took them over 4 hours to load up a 2 bedroom apartment that was already fully packed. After that it was super difficult to get in touch with them and find out where our stuff was. It took literally 7 weeks (43 days to be specific) to deliver our belongings with almost no updates along the way to where our things where or when they would arrive. The only updates we heard were excuses as to why they were late (things like the trucks were delayed for weeks with previous deliveries which makes it seem like they only have the one truck).

When our stuff did arrive it was through a different company whom they had contracted to deliver all of our stuff (which again confuses the delays). When the truck arrived they knocked down the cable line without a word of apology and unloaded our boxes and furniture (not seeming to understand fragile boxes, actually dropping some on cement). We found that our boxes had been badly beat up, our furniture was scratched and dented and most of the boxes had been cut open (literally the tape had been cut open and retaped with a black tape).

When we spoke with American Van Lines about the issues, we heard nothing about the opened or damaged items, they said "Sounds like you'll need to call the cable company" in regards to the downed lines and they offered us $30 per day for the delay. However, that date count didn't start until the 20th day (before that was within their delivery window they never told us about) so they offered us about a $700 off our total over $4,000 bill and that was all for 7 weeks of delivery and all the damage. I cannot recommend you away from this company enough. They were absolutely terrible and I will never work with them again.

    Original Review: Aug. 2, 2017

A cross country move is already stressful, and AVL only made it worse. I moved from Tampa Bay to Chicago and had a pretty awful experience for the following reasons. I could never get in contact with my agent when I called with questions. It would be days before we got in touch, and I usually had to call them back to check on whether they even got a message. That should have been the first red flag. It felt like since I already paid my deposit, I was no longer worth following up with. They failed to let me know that at both my pickup and drop-off location, they would have to use smaller U-haul trucks to transfer my items into a larger truck AT MY EXPENSE on top of the moving estimate. This ended up being around $400 extra dollars.

They did not clarify with me that my scheduled move was during a "window" of dates, making it impossible to plan. AVL informed me LESS THAN 24 HOURS beforehand that it would arrive between 2 pm and 4 pm the following day to pick up my belongings. Then, on that following day at 11 am they called to say they would arrive at noon. I was not finished packing when they arrived, and so I had to ship three boxes of items myself which amounted to about $100 in postage fees. AVL is completely ill-prepared to pack large items. They will charge you an exorbitant amount of money to crate items like marble, mirrors, etc., but none of it would be necessary if they only knew how to properly pad and pack those types of items. I had to do a lot of extra work to find boxes for my mirror, art, and TV, which ended up being about $400 extra dollars of supply costs.

The movers were in a terrible mood when they did arrive (again, earlier than I was informed the previous day). They complained to me that they were being rushed by their schedulers, as if any of that is relevant to me, the customer. The insurance included is essentially useless. At 60 cents per pound per article, you will likely never recover the true value of anything damaged. The only option they offer is a policy that costs about $300 and then has a $500 deductible, so it’s only worthwhile for antiques or very expensive items for which you can prove still hold a value over $800 should they be damaged. They ended up taking apart my bike, and when they reassembled it, they damaged a piece of the fork which basically totaled the bike. Based on the insurance policy explained above, I'd have received about $30. I now have to purchase a new bike.

The company is based out of South Florida, which also should have been a red flag. I grew up in FL so I can tell you from experience that south FL businesses can be very dishonest, corrupt, and shady. From a cultural perspective, everything from dinner to a cab is expensive and comes with horrible service, so why would a moving company be any different?

I moved from Wisconsin to Maine. All my things had to go into storage in NC for three weeks which meant double the handling and added truck mileage. My actual delivery was two weeks past the delivery window time. American Van Lines gave me a discount for the inconvenience. I had a very extensive fine art collection that included large paintings and framed works under glass, plus a piano. I packed most things myself except the art & furniture. The packers did a great job wrapping everything. I was thrilled that after 2.5 months in their care I lost nothing except a couple table legs snapped and were lost.

I am a single person who had over 8100 lbs to move! This move was big and I expected some damage but all was well. My new home is 177 years old and the stairs up to the bedrooms are steep with turns. The guys busted to get stuff upstairs. I am now settling and am hoping they find the legs to my table. I must give American Van Lines a good passing grade. I am a little disappointed about the legs but I'm happy overall.

Overall good experience. The only problem we had was that when we booked the move, we ordered two garment boxes, which did not come with the moving truck. Everyone was very nice and helpful, from booking to delivery of the our belongings. When booking the move, you are dealing with someone that is not local, so we did not get notified about a time for the move, from a local representative until I called the Friday before our Monday move. We did get an email and call soon after that. The two gentlemen that come to move us, Mike and "K", were wonderful to work with. They were careful with our belongings, and worked efficiently. Highly recommend these folks.

We were assured that they would be sending 4 of their own employees. This was not the case. A third party contractor arrived at our house in a refrigerated truck, with 2 other people that were not experienced in moving furniture. Two dressers were extremely damaged in the move along with several walls scuffed in our new home. We were told to submit a claim, which would take up to 120 days to review and determine if they would repair/replace our furniture. Never again!

A few years ago I moved across the country. I got quotes from several companies and American Van Lines was the highest, but I hired them because of their high review scores. I was told I would have a single point of contact, which turned out not to be true, as over the course of my move I was passed along to at least 3 people. The driver in charge of the pickup communicated very poorly and not only made me think that my stuff wouldn't fit on the truck, he also didn't know I had purchased extra insurance which left me waiting quite a while after everything was boxed and loaded for him to make phone calls to the office.

While my belongings were in transit my point of contact didn't always return my calls and when she did I got misinformation regarding the arrival of my belongings. The delivery driver smelled like cigarettes and I had multiple damaged or missing items. The insurance I purchased paid a small fraction of the value of said items. In hindsight I should have used my second choice for considerably less money.

My experience was addressed by American Van Lines personnel and I believe American Van Lines strives to avoid some of these incidents in all their moves. I am generally satisfied with the overall move but caution you all to consider limitations mentioned by subpar reviews mentioned here when choosing them.

    Original Review: July 7, 2017

I had high hopes for my moving experience, having chosen the company based on their typically stellar reviews but was left feeling swindled. The process began dealing with Harold, a salesman, that made lots of promises the rest of the company then struggled to follow through on. He described a fluid window within which we would be able to customize pickup and delivery to meet our needs. Since we had a week during which we needed to have everything packed, loaded, moved and unloaded before heading out on vacation, this was essential and the reason I chose American Van Lines.

Harold described job assignments as occurring the Friday before they would be performed and cited my ability to coordinate with the scheduler to comply with my wife and I, residents with a toddler's stringent demands. I'm not so naive as to expect that we would have actually had the freedom Harold described BUT I didn't expect to be completely powerless, being told that delivery could occur at any point during the 2-week delivery window that Harold had told me to ignore. Considering that's how my interactions with Nathalie, our case coordinator, began as I expressed frustration from a changed pickup date, my experience continued to be poor. Nathalie is worst coordinator I have ever dealt with. Of the ten calls I placed to her direct extension, two were picked up having occurred immediately after she had called me. I had equal success calling the general line and getting her at random.

Our driver, though courteous and respectful, openly admitted his frustration with AVL's poor ability to coordinate his moves. Help arrived in the form of two subcontracted helpers which, not being a part of AVL directly, sought to hustle the driver. Despite a previously arranged amount, they held him hostage, naming their price to help him upon at rendezvous the morning of my job. They worked slowly, took many breaks, and whined about how unprofessional it was to schedule a job in one day, how they families and kids that they wanted to see and couldn't we just arrange to go home at 5 like a normal laborer and finish in the morning.

They were trying to work me against the driver to extort two days of labor out of him as the hours worked per day are prearranged and guaranteed and they would have been paid for two full days. I later learned that the driver left his cell phone in their car while driving to an ATM to pay them after completing my job. They charged him $100 to return it to him.

Delivery had to be rescheduled to hit within our window but was later delayed for two days as the moving truck broke down. I learned about this having happened 6 hours after AVL were initially notified because Nathalie didn't come into work that day until 3 PM. I found this particularly appalling because I was learning that every possession was stranded somewhere between Colorado and New York City. Nathalie had no idea where and had emailed dispatch to get more information but hadn't heard anything. I only later learned that the breakdown had occurred in Kansas and that the fix was quick because the driver was forthcoming. AVL would have and did attempt to keep me in the dark. What kind of company has no ability to talk to their dispatch people in real time, over the phone?

The driver arrived in town the day before our final deadline and despite my requests to have delivery occur in the afternoon on that day, it was scheduled for a 5 hour period on the final day of our deadline. You read that correctly: AVL budgeted for 5 hours to unload, unpack, and place every item in our house. This all went awry when the help they had arranged to unload didn't arrive because AVL told us we weren't needed. Despite AVLs instructions not to start unloading without help, he and I were forced to unload the truck to get it down before we had to leave on our vacation. If not more were unloaded before replacement help arrived from 2 hours away. They worked incredibly slowly and unload was completed 15 minutes before we had to leave.

I was left with a house of boxes having paid for a full-service experience. Nothing was assembled, or unpacked and every piece of furniture was hurriedly placed as a result of AVL failure. In exchange for a global failure of their process, I was extended a simple apology. Our driver quit his job on the spot because after 14 years of doing this, he couldn't afford to work for a company so unable to support him such that he could do his job. Despite wasting precious unloading time on the phone with the VP of AVL, I was overly satisfied with his effort and tipped him well. Said VP was very busy and didn't have time to deal with the catastrophe his company had created. I later learned that AVL had hired him, just like they do their subcontracted help, without ever meeting anyone face-to-face; a very risky behavior in a business where customer satisfaction matters so much.

In reviewing my poor experience with my coordinator, I asked to speak with a supervisor at some point and one promptly called me to discuss things. However, as I was on vacation, I asked that she send me her contact info so that matters could be discussed during normal business hours after I returned from vacation. I never heard another word from AVL. It's now been 3 weeks since this ordeal began. I guess once they have your money, your experience is no longer their concern. AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS and you will thank me later. Had my employer not graciously paid for the move in full, I would be disputing the charges with my credit card company and the job was only half completed.

I am moving long distance from NYC to Missouri. I got an estimate for the move from AVL in early April (3 months ago), signed the contract, paid the deposit. The company was fairly nice at the beginning. Things got worse as the moving date was approaching. I only got a pick-up window, not a specific pick-up date, and I was trying to figure out which day will the movers be actually coming. This was difficult, as the consultant was impossible to get hold of (not picking up the phone or returning calls). Three days before the pick-up window I still did not know the day, but they promised me to let me know at least two days in advance.

I wish things had stopped here. Not entirely two days before the move the company called that they are sorry, they will not be able to pick up my stuff. They will not have a van here, nor a partner who can do the move. But that I should not worry because I will get the deposit refunded. Seriously?! Two days before a long-distance move? A refund? This has been a terrible experience. Stay away from this company.

RUN AWAY! Seriously! Run away from this company and DO NOT look back! I was fooled by all of these "good" reviews, until I realized over half of them were amended complaints. This company is so far from professional. It is frightening. Their customer service, once you sign the contract (that they receive commissions for), is non-existent, and utterly atrocious! I signed a binding contract on 5/26/17 for a move in the window of 6/25 to 6/27 from Kansas City to Sparks, Nevada, and paid a deposit over $1,600.

I receive a call on 6/20, FIVE DAYS BEFORE THE START OF THE WINDOW after trying to contact them for FOUR DAYS because on Saturday, the 17th, I was called and told they did not have an AVL truck and were "going to use a contractor" to fill the move. I tried calling back immediately after talking to her to get more details. They literally NEVER answered one of the literal 50 calls I made to 3 of the agents working there, and I spent over half an hour on hold before hanging up. Anytime I tried to make contact myself and it took her till the 20th, FIVE DAYS before our move to tell me that they could not find any contractor to help our move...

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use this company under any circumstance! The unprofessionalism is simply mind-boggling! Taking over a thousand dollars from someone and then screwing them over right before one of the most stressful events in life is simply ineffably inconsiderate! I need not only be compensated with a deposit return, but hundreds of dollars in compensation for telling me nearly A MONTH AFTER PAYING THE DEPOSIT, that I am not longer to be provided for services I paid for weeks ago! The cost of utilizing any moving company (if there are even trucks available!) is exponentially higher than it was a month ago! Several hundred to thousands of dollars more! NEVER EVER consider using this company!

He also got mad when Ron tried to show him how the chair from Relax The Back where he works operated so he could get it thru the door without scratching the wood and he told him he'd been moving for many years and knows how... yet he still struggled to get it thru door and scratches it. Apparently they didn't wrap a couple small wood tables and small chairs as they have scratches and a grill was damaged. Other things too but too much to write. Not really happy and glad it's over.

FYI: AVL will not ship grandfather clocks unless they've been prepared for transport by a (clock) professional. Wise policy, for both shipper and owner. All in all, AVL is a very conscientious, professional company with courteous staff at all levels from advisors to crew. I would use again w/o hesitation.
