I moved out of state and I used American Van Lines. I estimated the weight over the phone, and then when the moving company came in, they adjusted it to fit what was actually on the truck. The moving coordinator showed up and took a list of what we had then we put our things on the truck and it was gone. The crew who was here during the move was very good.

We had to move from Utah to Florida so we were in need for a transport company. American Van Lines was able to give us a better deal than the other ones were able to do. Also, I have seen people use them. We dealt with a very knowledgeable and very professional moving coordinator. She answered all the questions in a timely fashion. Moreover, the actual crew was able to come and pack all of our stuff earlier than expected as the people who bought our house in Utah was able to close early. The head driver who did all that was very nice. He was very knowledgeable and he did everything the way that we expected it to be done. The guys who packed did a very good job. They were very efficient and very thorough. They got everything together and was very kind and very considerate with us trying to move in my children. They were very sweet that we even got them lunch.

However, we had to put our stuff in storage because we didn't have a house when we relocated to Florida. We had to sell our house first, and the company puts us here, and then we had to find a house here. Our experience down here was good but, when we were moving into our home and getting our stuff, our experience was completely different. The crew handled the transport well. It was fine on the way but one of their guys forgot to pack a whole bathroom. He also forgot to pack up some stuff in the garage. He told a guy that he needed to hurry because his niece was dying of cancer which I did not know if it was true.

Also, they didn't have enough space in the truck for us. They had two other homes in there and they had to put some of our belongings on the outside of the truck. They accidentally packed up my keys and they found they had to go back through the boxes and found my keys. It took them maybe two days to pack up our house and load it up. I called about a week in advance and told them that we're moving into our house. Our closing date was like the 15th and I asked them if they could bring all of our stuff by the 19th because we were getting the house painted. At first, I was told no and that I wouldn't be able to get for another month. And then, I was told if it could be a day earlier and it was fine with me. Then, I got called again and they said it will be on Saturday. I said yes but that was the last day because we had to be out of the company housing on Saturday.

An hour before they were supposed to be here, I got a call asking if they can book it back until Monday. I told them I needed them here that day. They were supposed to be here in an hour and we had no place to go. So, the lady said that the crew won’t be able to get here until around 3 or 4. I said they gotta work through the night and my stuff gotta be put together in the house. The crew got here about 3:00 and at first, it was going pretty fast. Then, about halfway through, they started slowing down.

Around 8:00, the sun started going down. We brought a brand-new house but it did not have any lights in the bedroom. They crew started complaining that they had to take stuff upstairs. They didn't have time to put our stuff together. They had to go or they would have to sleep in the truck. It ended up that my daughter’s dress had holes stuck in the back of it, our couch was damaged and a lot of our personal coats and glass was broken. The guy who brought it here stuck some of our stuff in a very small truck and it looked like he just piled stuff on top of each other without any cause or care of how he did it.

My dresser is missing a hook as well and they did not know where it was. In fact, half of our stuff was in our garage and they didn't even put it in the rooms that they belonged in. My husband works, so it was just me trying to bring stuff from the garage inside the house. It was horrible. The unpacking outweighed the good of getting everything here. The bad is up in our mind more than the good does and one bad thing erases a lifetime of good. I may use American Van Lines again but I'd be sterner on how I would want things down instead saying they are professionals and they have it.

We were moving about a mile and three quarters and our realtor recommended American Van Lines to us. The moving coordinator who assisted us was very professional and very well-organized. He worked around us rather than we working around him. It had been an excellent experience. The actual moving crew came in on a Wednesday and they packed everything up. We had a couple of cases made and we took apart a table and they packed the rest of the table for us. Then, they loaded it that day.

They took off overnight and the following morning, they turned up to the new house and unloaded in a day so it took them two days in total. They did good work. It was impressive as there was one breakage in the entire thing but we just found out about three weeks after the move that we are one small box short. I must call them to find out but I'm sure they didn’t locate it because they would have called if they realized it by now. Despite that, they're very good.

We relocated to Wyoming and used American Van Lines for the move. We talked with the moving consultant about number of boxes, and it all went very well. And the estimate went very well, too. We had quite a few conversations with our moving coordinator because there was some difficulty getting the truck there because of the weather. The truck was stuck in Reno for several days because of storms and they shut down the highway. And then, once the driver got started again, he broke down in California. So there was another day's delay. So, we had quite a few interactions with the coordinator, and they were all very satisfactory.

There was a driver who coordinated with crews both in Oregon and in Wyoming, and the interaction with the driver was very good. He was amazingly competent and getting the truck packed and getting our things here safely. He hired a crew in Oregon and they did a good job of getting boxes packed and on to the truck. When he got to Wyoming, there is a moving company here that he contracted with to come and help, and they were not good. The driver got here late in the first place, again, because of weather. So it was late in the day when they got here. But we ended up with boxes in the wrong rooms. We ended up with boxes in the basement that should've been upstairs and vice versa. They ended up moving probably the last 20% just setting them in our garage. And so, we had to move them into the house. So, I was not happy with the crew in Wyoming at all.

Still, that was no reflection on American Van Lines. They hired the best they could find. I've used different moving companies for different reasons, and American Van Lines has performed better than anybody else I've worked with. I especially was happy with the estimate because I got estimates from other companies, and theirs was comparable. And we actually saved a couple thousand dollars from the original estimate.

My son was moving out to Orlando from Dallas and at the time, I was trying to evaluate whether it was worth it to pay for professional movers or do it ourselves with the U-Haul. Dory, American Van Lines' rep, was able to offer a service wherein the cost was by the pound. I itemized the list and the rep gave me an allotment of boxes by the size. We were then able to get our son packed up. Also, I didn’t have to load it and drive a U-Haul truck myself. That worked out really well for us. I was also impressed with how Dory was able to make that work and within our budget.

However, the moving coordinator didn't live up to the excellence that we had with the rep. We didn't feel like her communication was timely enough. She said she would let me know about the move by a certain day or time. But then, she dropped the ball and didn't call. The date range was one of the hang-ups I was having at the time because our son had to get out of the dorms and I didn't wanna stay in a hotel longer than we had to see the items. There was a day when we thought their mover was coming but then the coordinator called me back and told me that they couldn't do it. Though we got the job done with her, it wasn't at the level of excellence that I expected given our encounter with Dory. Despite that miscommunication, the mover worked hard and got the move done the second day thereafter.

The way their movers loaded up my son's things looked very unorganized from the perspective of someone who's a type A control freak. Their mover pulled out other people's stuff out of the truck and had those things all over my driveway. At the time, I hoped that if they had three or four stops in between, that the driver would not be pulling out our stuff onto somebody else's driveway. Still, he obviously knew what he was doing.

American Van Lines people loaded, delivered and unloaded the boxes. The crew was good and the guy's skill level was fantastic. They thought they'd have to offload to a satellite truck because the driver had a big semi-truck and he couldn't maneuver that at the Orlando location. Instead, he was able to back the semi-truck at an angle that was like putting a square peg in a round hole.

We have a move coming up and I'll be calling Dory again to see what she can do for us. For a normal person, working with American Van Lines is a worry-free experience. Their coordinator gave a two-week window and the timing was good. Everything turned out great.

I got a hold of American Van Lines quickly and they were willing to work with me. Not knowing exactly what I was moving and the timelines, there were some discrepancies. But overall, it came in line to what the quote was. The move was from California to Tampa, Florida, and everything was fine except for one little glitch. They wanted to deliver when I wasn't gonna be in Tampa, which delayed the delivery two weeks. But it's understandable because it just didn't match up with when the truck was gonna be in the area. The moving crew and the truck driver were great. They were very flexible. There were two different guys, and the one that on-loaded was fine. The guy that offloaded was fine, too. He was local. So, I was happy with them. I would recommend American Van Lines.

I couldn’t ask for anything better. I was really impressed about how fast they packed up everything and moved. It was amazing. They were very organized. We had our things in storage for three months because the house wasn’t ready. And when we moved in and called up to have our items moved in, it was very quick.

Worst moving experience we have ever had. Worst claims experience on top of that. We moved from Texas and purchased their storage for a little over a month. When our items were delivered everything seemed fine until we started unboxing. Upon unboxing and trying to set up our TVs we realized one of our TVs was busted internally. I wrote my moving coordinator immediately and sent pictures asap. She directed me towards the claims department and we filled out a claim. A few weeks later we realized other items were completely missing. The only one of significant value was an 8 foot tall Werner ladder, not something easily lost. I wrote another email to me moving coordinator to tell her about the missing ladder and she again forwarded me to claims.

The claims process has been ongoing for over 2 and a half months. Today we finally get a letter stating they be doing absolutely nothing about it. There reasoning being that we did not immediately write the inventory log that anything was damaged. Well the TV still in the box. Even if I would have pulled it out of the box I would have had to set it up and turn it on before knowing there was a problem. Also their inventory list is a carbon copy jumble of unreadable text. If you are unfortunate enough to use this awful company make sure to make a clear, readable copy of your inventory list and DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING until you have unboxed and turned on everything of value.

The moving coordinator from American Van Lines was very professional and very capable. He was very helpful with my move. The crew packed some of my stuff and I packed up boxes mostly. But, I was not entirely happy with them. They did not load up some of the boxes in the old address so I had to go back there to do a final clean-up and walk through with the landlord. I also found the stuff I was looking for that they should have brought. There were also a couple of items they said they could not transport such as laundry detergent and liquid stuff which I was okay with.

Then, when they unloaded, they put stuff on the shed that I had delivered to the property. I would recommend that they put a little forethought into it when they start unloading stuff. They didn't leave any access for me to get to the back of the shed so I can get stuff back there. I ended up having to unload a bunch of stuff to get to it. I hired a moving company since I have had back surgery. I'm 63 years old and a disabled vet. I can't do heavy lifting stuff like that. Despite that, they did the job and worked steadily.

I recently moved from Houston, Texas to Clover, South Carolina. My move was work related. After reviewing several companies online I chose to go with American Van Lines. The initial experience with the sales team was exceptional. I worked with Harold and he held our hand through the entire process, even when things got ugly.

Our nightmare experience was with the movers and drivers. In Houston we had items in the garage that we planned moving into storage once the items got to South Carolina. When we loaded we asked the driver and movers if they would load the items first or last because they'd go into storage. We also asked if the items would be labeled. The reply from the driver was that "It didn't matter because the items were being loaded into a larger truck". That turn to be the biggest mistake! When the items were delivered the driver in South Carolina hijacked our property because he did not want to make two stops: one at the storage and one at the apartment. He refused to unload. We had a back and forth with the office and the driver but he continued to change his story. He then said he couldn't unload because we had not paid. This was not true.

We called the office again sorted that out and then he still refused to unload because he said the items were not "tagged". We ended up in a back and forth with the driver and the customer service desk. We even had the customer service desk doubting our accounts of the driver's behavior. Harold ** and Cicely were superstars. Both tried to intervene and resolve the issues. In the end the damage had been done. Our experience had been ruined by the drivers and packers. When we started going through our items we found several damaged and loose items. How can you not pack something? After our nightmare experience we're hesitant to file a claim. If you're a customer looking for movers I would recommend you look harder.

Our experience is midway and has not been what we were lead to believe in our move from Texas to Michigan. All along we were told that a semi truck and trailer would come to the house to pick up our belongings. We were told that a shuttle truck would be necessary if the truck couldn't get to our house in the subdivision. Expecting a normal truck trailer would come to the house we have seen many trucks throughout the sub moving families in and out of our houses. Shuttle trucks are an added cost of hundreds of dollars. In the last week before the American Van Lines were to come pick up our belongings we were told it would be an 80 foot trailer because they were moving several families to the midwest. People, an 80 foot trailer will not be able to reach neighborhood homes at all or be able to access a storage unit or neighborhood home for delivery. So we needed 2 shuttle trucks, one for pickup and one for delivery.

Cost is rising quickly. This we feel is something they should have told us from the beginning and shame on us for not asking every detail of moving, such as the length of the trailer that is coming to a neighborhood home. We knew our belongings would fit in a 26 foot truck and didn't consider a trailer that large. Should have been upfront with that information. We were told that the shuttle truck would leave our home and go to scales to weigh our belongings before being transferred to this 80 foot trailer for shipment to Michigan.

Now it has been 8 days since picking up our belongings that we are charged by the weight and American Van Lines have yet been able to quote us an exact weight and cost of our shipment. They have 2 weeks to deliver our belongings to a storage unit in Michigan. This 80 foot truck/trailer would have to go to a location to transfer our belongings to a shuttle truck and then our storage unit. This is where we are in limbo. 8 days after our household has been picked up by American Van Lines with no quote on the cost that should have been calculated by April 1st, maybe even April 2nd. It is April 9th people.... Bad April Fools on us. Beware of movers. Ask every little detail. To be continued....

Did a non-binding contract with American Van Lines to move from Florida to South Carolina. Had initial unease due to bad experiences with other moving companies that wanted binding contracts and used third parties to do actual packing, loading, and delivery. However, my unease was completely unnecessary. From the first phone call to final delivery, this was the best household goods move that I have experienced out of 16 total in my career. Customer Service was professional and patient with the many questions and times I followed-up with additional queries.

I cannot say enough about Roberto, the driver and on-site leader who conducted the packing, loading, and delivery. He and his helpers were professional, experienced, very careful, courteous, and everything was packed, loaded, and delivered with NO damage!!! I was extremely impressed. Roberto was amazing! This was two days before I called because I had seen pre oils complaints of this and knew the experience would be horrible. The moving Partner showed up two hours later than window given then took three more hours to get truck weighed. So they didn’t start until five hours after the time they said they would be there.

So it was after 9 pm until they started and after midnight till they left. Neighbors with young children were upset because of how late their truck and movers were there being loud. They didn’t wrap most of my stuff and all of my bigger items were damaged in some way. Several of my shipping containers were totaled. Just a bunch of hired bodies who what had no idea what they were doing. I have an email from AVL trying to buy my silence and never mention this experience. They said, "Here is 150 for your troubles but you can never say anything bad about us and you have to change anything already out there." It was for $150. No joke. This is a legit review. We called America Van Lines to move my mother from TN to VA. We received a Binding Estimate of roughly $2500 to move a master bedroom (Bed, dresser, 2 night stands, TV and a TV stand, Freezer, large safe and 25 additional boxes of clothing and miscellaneous items). We were given a 2 day guarantee window of February 26 or 27th. The American Van Lines agent called my husband and verified the 3rd party they hired would pick up the household goods on the 27th. My husband flew to TN based on this information as my mom was closing on her sold home on the 28th. After this confirmation, we received a call from their 3rd party letting us know they would not be arriving until the 28th. My husband then called American Van Lines back to get clarification, and they advised us that if they came on the 28th they would work with the 3rd party to reimburse in some way since it was outside of the guarantee window.

Lo and behold, the driver calls us back and he can make it on the 27th. When he shows up, he asks my husband why he called American Van Lines as "They don't know what I have on my truck." He was extremely argumentative and confrontational from the get go. After he loaded my mother's goods he left to the weigh station and sent my husband a text and stated that the weight of the items was almost 7000 lbs! My husband immediately called American Van Lines to dispute the weight. They advised us that when the driver came to drop off the items, we could meet them at the weigh station to watch them weigh the truck full and follow them back after they unload the truck and watch them reweigh. We were completely fine with that. The driver called Friday (March 1) and let us know that he was swapping our load with another driver from the same company.

My husband called American Van Lines to assure that the initial driver would inform the new driver of the reweigh that we requested. We sent our credit card information to American Van Lines along with a copy of my driver's license. The New driver calls my husband on Saturday morning and advised my husband that he could deliver Sunday morning, and my husband reminded him about the reweigh. He said he would call my husband 30 min before he arrived at the scale so my husband could meet him there. The driver arrived at the scale then called my husband Sunday morning. When my husband arrived at the scale (which was almost 30 min away from our home), he informed us they didn't receive payment from American Van Lines. My husband showed the driver the email where we sent the payment information to American Van Lines, but he said they did not get it.

He then asked my husband to talk to the original driver who was on the phone, who then accused my husband of trying to skip out on payment. When my husband offered to provide the credit card information that we provided to American Van Lines, the 3rd party carrier refused to accept the credit card payments and stated they would place our stuff in storage and we would have to pay daily storage. When my husband stated that the contract with American Van Lines states we can pay with credit/debit/cash/money order, the 3rd party supplier refused to accept any form of card, and demanded we pay cash or money order for the initial weighed amount which was roughly $7000. This is almost $4500 more than what our initial quote was. When we asked about the reweigh, they then said they would not give us a refund. We would have to take that up with American Van Lines.

American Van Lines stated we were to get the refund from the driver. The 3rd party carrier proceeded to leave and place our stuff in storage and my husband followed them and proceeded to call the authorities because it was obvious we were being scammed by this 3rd party. The officer tried to reason with the 3rd party, but could not intervene as he stated this was civil matter and not criminal. During all this, since it was Sunday, we were unable to get ahold of anyone at American Van Lines, including the after hours contact number. We had to leave without retrieving our items. I immediately emailed all our contacts at American Van Lines to let them know what had happened. They responded first thing Monday morning apologizing profusely for the incident. They then advised us that our items were to be delivered March 5th.

March 5th came and an agent (Rebecca) called my husband and asked if our items had been delivered which they had not. We never heard back from American Van Lines. My husband sent a follow up email that evening around 5:30EST asking for an update, in which we were told by the manager we were working with (Yesenia). She had forward our issue to Samuel (the leading Manager) who had been working to get an update. Samuel reached out to us around 730 EST and let us know that we should have our items delivered on Monday, March 11 and again apologized for the inconvenience and that we would be compensated and he would reach out to us on Friday to let us know what that would entail.

He left us a message letting us know that once again, the delivery would not happen until Wednesday through Friday. We are now WELL outside the 10 day guarantee of delivery as the items are sitting in a storage facility near our home. We attempted to contact American Van Lines today March 11 3 times, and have not heard back. My card has been charged for the FULL AMOUNT of roughly $7000 plus the $1200 we initially put down to have them come in the first place. We did not sign a contract with the 3rd party supplier that American Van Lines used, we signed it with American Van Lines. Today is day 12 with no real solid information on when we can expect our items to be delivered, with my cards fully charged for a weight that we strongly believe is incorrect.

The company has reimbursed me so I can repair some of my damaged furniture.

    Original Review: March 6, 2019

Stay away from this company! They destroyed a bedroom dresser (not repairable), misplaced a leg for an expensive China cabinet, and damaged (fractured off the trim, and scratched the finish) on a $7000 dining table. 3 floor lamps worth hundreds of dollars are damaged (fractured ceramic, and bent iron stems). Several pieces of our China was broken into pieces, despite being in boxes labeled "fragile" or "glass." Those boxes were crushed by the movers. Our aluminum patio furniture have scratches all over them, and they fractured the axle on a metal antique gardening cart. Two original oil paintings were not packaged at all, and exposed to pieces of furniture. The glass shattered in a few picture frames, and scratched the photos inside them, and one of the frames has to be thrown away due to severe damage.

I am glad that more pieces weren't damaged. I am still opening boxes, so hopefully won't find too much more in damage. I wish they could have been more careful, especially at the prices I paid. Their packaging rates are so high. They took more than 12 hours to load my stuff into the truck. I hired a different moving company (who I gave 5 stars to) to take the same items out of storage and into my house, and the entire load and unload only took them 6 hours. And the new guys were much more careful, efficient, and reasonably priced.

Do NOT use American Van Lines!!! I filed a claim in December 2018 for the damages, including clear photos, and they responded in March 2019, saying I should consider a $444 settlement to drop my claims against them. What an insult, for such a paltry sum, considering the damages and inconveniences they caused to my family and me. My huge mistake was I was not physically present when the movers delivered my items... so they took the liberty to be careless and downright destructive. They are using that against me, to defend their horrible actions. NEVER AGAIN!

    Updated review: March 8, 2019

After my review, American Van Lines reached out to me to resolve my complaints. We were able to come to a satisfactory resolution.

    Original Review: March 1, 2019

Disorganized is the best word to describe my experience. I was given 10 hours notice for pickup and only because I called the main line to ask. According to the site, it should be 24 hours. The pick up movers were nice guys but unprofessional and slow. My things were haphazardly shoved into the moving truck and it took 2 hours to move a 1 bedroom apartment from a storage unit to a moving truck parked 10 feet away.

Also, know that I was given a 3 to 25 day window for delivery and it took 22 days. I wasn't quite prepared to live without my belongings that long. From the sales rep, I received multiple emails regarding my bill amount due and how to pay it but was not able to secure a delivery date. I had to call the main phone number to finally get a date, which according to their records they had known for 3 days. My delivery date was delayed by an additional day, but I understand that these things happen.

The delivery guys were AMAZING! They came on time, were professional and quick. But now that I've unpacked I realize there are things missing. It's nothing huge (lamp shades, trash can, linens) but it all costs money to replace. Be aware that their refund policy for damaged/lost items is $0.60/pound, so I will not be getting much for my trouble. Moral of the story: They aren't the best and they aren't the worst. Just very mediocre. I'd pick another company, if I had to do it all over.

Careful on the price, what was quoted on the phone as the total price, even when asked 'this is the total", of course base on end result weights Price was given, pick up date set. It was delivered daily quick, on delivery I was handed a bill doubling the quote, the est. weight was right on, so it wasn't because of the weight, and was told has to be paid in full before delivery can be done. So was trapped, and paid it. A month after delivery received another bill for 500+. When asked what is this for I either did not get a call back or email reply. Now 2 years later I get another email bill for another 500. What started as (numbers are round) 2500 price turned into just under 6000. The good -- did not noticed anything broken or missing, was a few scratches here and there which is expected. Just be wary of the on-the-phone quote.

I have had the worst experience with this company. They hire outside contractors for drivers which most of the time the drivers are extremely rude. Not only that but the American does not communicate at all with the movers. For example, they tell me that the movers take credit cards to pay for the move, but when I talk to the movers, they state they only accept cash or money order!! I don’t have thousands of cash in my bank account to pay in cash and that’s why I asked about credit card as an option for payment. I’m extremely disappointed how this move has gone and the lack of communication with the Van line and the mover. I will not be using them again!!

Everything about our experience with American Van Lines was really good. We moved from Boca Raton, Florida to Bedford, New Hampshire, which was approximately 1,500 miles, and it took a couple of weeks. It was some time in the middle of August and we got our stuff towards the end of August. The leader of the crew that picked us up was the same guy who delivered our furniture, and he was really good. In some instances, he went above and beyond what would have been expected and we appreciated all of his help.

We did have some items that were marginally damaged though, and we only found out recently. We moved into our house about two weeks ago and some of the stuff had been in storage for a couple of months. But I reached out to American Van Lines and they seemed to be willing to address it. They provided me with an email address to send photos of the damaged stuff. It's some stuff that had some meaning to us but it's nothing too significant and other than that, I'm happy with the service.

I considered another agency first but they were very costly. So, I did some research and see what I was working with. Then, I called American Van Lines to ask if they do residential moving and we used them back in September. Everybody there was nice. I worked with an awesome lady and told her what I was looking for. I gave her a five-day notice and she was able to pull everything together and make the move happen quickly.

I had two gentlemen during the move and they were very nice and friendly. They came in and worked hard from the time that they came in to the time they left. It took two hours to box me up and get me moved and another two hours to get me into the new place which is about six miles down the road. American Van Lines is good and I am gonna use them again when I move again in the spring. I had a good experience between the move, packing up, moving out and putting everything together. It was better than I thought it would be.

We were moving from Connecticut to Florida. I looked into three companies and I also looked up American Van Lines online. American Van Lines was less expensive and could do the dates that I wanted them to do and they were really good about helping me with the packing information, so I chose them. The moving coordinator was really good about helping me make the purchase and estimate inventory. I called back a couple of times saying I forgot something and he would say it was not a problem. At that point, it was kind of like we were gonna move things ourselves until we realized we had too much stuff, so we were already getting a little frazzled. When the crew got there for packing, my husband and I were so exhausted. We had a lot of pictures that hadn’t been packed yet, and I just couldn't bubble wrap or tape anything else, and they did it for us but didn’t charge us anything extra. I really liked them.

American Van Lines said that when they picked up the stuff, the move could take up to two weeks, but they got there in three days. The only problem was we were missing a bunch of boxes and don’t know where they were. I think there were three moves on the truck, and they called us at one point and asked us if we had a couch. But we didn’t have an extra couch, so they lost somebody's couch and they also lost a couple of boxes.

I had put in a claim but unfortunately, I couldn’t prove anything because I didn’t have the barcodes for the boxes. One box contained a couple of antique, Chinese jewelry boxes and there was some cheap jewelry in there. I don’t know what the boxes themselves would be valued at today, but I’ve had them for 30 to 40 years, so they’re sentimental. However, at the beginning of December, they said it could take ‘til the end of January for them to evaluate the claim.

On Friday October 5, 2018 my husband and I began to interview moving companies. We spoke with Juan and discussed the size of the move, locations, prices and dates. I told him that we wanted to be out by 11/6/18 and in by the 11/13/18. I was told that there would be a 3-day window for pick-up and delivery on each end. We agreed that the pick-up window would be from the 4th to the 6th, and the delivery window would be from the 11th through the 13th. We discussed this and I was told that it would not be a problem. We signed papers and returned them to Juan on 10/9/18. We did not notice the company had extended the delivery dates out to 11/18/18. We were not informed that American Van Lines would broker out our job to another company and did not find this out until the day they were supposed to pack and pick-up our goods.

We were called around 11:00 AM on 11/6/18, the day that they were supposed to pack and pick-up, that they could not come that morning because the truck had broken down and would call us when it was repaired. We did not know at that time that they were in Fresno, CA which is 119 miles away, approximately a 2.5-hour drive with normal traffic. It was also at this time that we found out our job was brokered out to Energy Moving. At that time, we looked up this company to discover that their online reviews were horrible. We were called later that day to tell us that they truck was not going to be fixed in time to pick us up that that and would “try” for the next day.

We had arranged for a hotel that evening at the Best Western in Gilroy, we called, explained our situation and they graciously canceled our reservation with no penalty. The next morning, we waited for word from the movers and they finally arrived mid-afternoon. The packing and loading began and quickly became a fiasco. I went through the house explaining what need to be packed, what stayed and showed them an area where I had put everything that was not to be packed and was going with us.

Numerous times we noticed that breakable items were being put into a box with no protection or wrapping and not necessarily with like items. Example one box contained: a lamp, the shade, yoga mat, silver mantle clock and clothes from master closet. Nothing was wrapped, and the clothes were just laying on top of it all, instead of being hung in the wardrobe boxes.

About 2 hours into the packing (by this time it was dark outside) boxes were all over the carport and street, I noticed that my purse was missing. It had been placed in the area with the other items that were not to be packed. When I told the driver about this, he explained that it couldn’t be, that I must be mistaken. No, it was packed. I went out with one of the packers and opened approximately 20 boxes and finally found it at the bottom of a wardrobe box. The box was also packed with hanging clothes and clothes that were just wadded up and pushed through to the bottom. It also contained other household items that did not come out of the clothes closet. During the search, I found numerous of these 20 boxes that were not properly packed - some items from all over the home just thrown into boxes with no organization at all.

We were supposed to be staying in Fernley, NV that night at the Super 8 Motel but had to cancel our reservation and pay over $120.00 for the room because it was taking long to pack. At 12:30 AM on 11/8/18 the movers finally finished what was supposed to be a 5 hour job. My husband and I drove to Sacramento, approximately 150 miles and arrived around 3:00 AM and stayed at the La Quinta Inn.

The morning of 11/8/18 we left Sacramento and drove to Winnemucca, NV spent a night. The next day we drove to Caldwell, ID. We stayed in the La Quinta Inn. We kept in constant communication with American Van Lines - numerous personnel trying to get a date for delivery. It was on one of these calls that we were told that they had until 11/18/18 to deliver per our contract. This was obviously very upsetting and explained that no one had ever mentioned this to us, but after reviewing the contract we saw that the date had been amended from what had been agreed to. It but still did not believe that it could take that long. In fact, the driver had told us that it could be there as early as the 11th. Our original reservation had been from 11/10/18 to 11/14/18. We had to extend our reservation at the hotel 3 times, each time with no guarantee of a delivery day, except to say that the contract said it had to be there by the 11/18/18.

The movers finally arrived at 7:00 AM on 11/22/18 which was Thanksgiving Day. While unpacking our belongings, we discovered that very important items were missing: a file cabinet with tax records, passports, military records, medical records; statue that was the last gift received from a deceased parent, and furniture. A couple of days later, fortunately it was found in a crate that was left behind in Fresno. They finally delivered it to us the following week. It was on this delivery that we found out that the crew had been overbooked by their office and should have been here days before. Instead, our delivery had been diverted. The crew was sent to a client that had a huge home with museum quality goods to pack and move, which took an additional 3 days.

Further, getting up the day after the initial delivery we discovered that our very expensive mattress, which had been wrapped and loaded on the outside of the truck had gone through a snowstorm, was wet. When we called to discuss this urgent matter, we were told to just file a claim. This was no help at all. We had to give up our holiday with friends, we had to extend our stay at the hotel, we were mentally stressed due to all of these factors. All of this is bad enough, but with all the extra days in motels and having to buy 3 meals per day we spent well over $1,400.00 that we had not budgeted for. What should have been a joyous move, retiring and moving to a new home turned out to be a nightmare which we are still financially and emotionally suffering from. Please never hire these people, they are a disaster.

Plus, I felt like that they had a good reputation because my whole life, I’ve been seeing their trucks all over the place. The lady who set the move up was great. She was very knowledgeable about what she does. I had a lot of questions and she had the answers.

However, the movers got there late. Plus, they didn’t have the tools that they needed to take the furniture apart. One of our family members had to run the supervisor to Walmart to buy tools. He thought he was gonna have to pay for the tools himself and finally got a hold of the right person at American Van Lines. I had asked for certain things to be wrapped, but they went overboard with it and were wrapping up everything in the whole house. I finally had to stop them because we had paid for a certain amount of hours. They were just eating up time constantly wrapping stuff. I felt like they were trying to add more time.

Once the movers got here at our new home, they kept watching their watches. They knew they were past the time that they had allotted for us to move. When they got there, they didn’t have to move anything, except for the refrigerator, the appliances, and the furniture. My husband had just about done it all for them. He ended up moving the majority of what we moved to our new house.

The movers tried fitting a French door refrigerator through a door that was obviously too small. Instead of stopping, all of them got in behind that refrigerator and tried to push it through that door. What they did to our refrigerator was awful. It’s dented, scratched and has white paint all over it from the house. It’s a black refrigerator. I mailed in the claim about a week or two after we moved in, which was in October and we have not heard anything back. I’ll never use American Van Lines again.

We had some minor things that got broken and scratched during the move, but we fixed things on our own and it wasn't something to make a deal out of.

It's my understanding that they move more than one family at a time, so they have more than our stuff on there. I don't know if they rearrange things later as they move on to pack someone else's things in the truck, but we had a bad situation with a very expensive dining room table. They took my table apart, which I wasn't really thrilled about, and I didn't like the idea that they wanted it completely unassembled. But when they got it to this end, nobody could put it back together, and it was a fiasco. The table still does not sit right because they took it apart, so we're dealing with it as it is. I think what they were trying to do was take everything apart so they could fit as much in that truck as possible. By doing so, they could damage things. Still, the people at American Van Lines were nice and they worked really hard. They were not perfect and they made a few screw-ups, but for the most part, they were good.

We had a good moving crew. They were very helpful, quick and did everything that they needed to do.There was somebody who put a dent in the wall. But it was fixable. They did their job well and I appreciated them. We got along really good. They picked up the day before we were supposed to move into the new house, and it was right during the holiday too. But then the guy who was buying our house, had some problems at the last minute with his getting the approval of FHA. So there were some real questions about whether or not we would be able to move into the house.

When we checked the moving company they said, “Well, we had to take everything off of the trucks and put it in the storage. And then we’ll have to put it back on the trucks, and it’s gonna cost you extra for that time period because we need our trucks.” I told my realtor we weren’t gonna pay a lot of extra money because his realtor should’ve known that everything needed to have been finalized before they told us. But it eventually got straightened out and it was only a day delay by time they delivered it. Overall I would recommend American Van Lines. I looked into many companies but American Van Lines originally said there was a 90%-95% chance that they could do the move in one day, so I went with them. It turned out, however, that wasn’t the case and that made me a bit upset. During the pick up, the crew wasted an hour, saying there was more stuff than they thought and they had to count everything. It probably took them two and half hours to take the first package out of the house even though everything was boxed and by the door. One guy had to call the home office while the other two weren’t really doing anything. They brought out some boxes, packaging and things until the other guy got the okay to start moving.

I knew ahead of time that the initial amount was based off of an estimate, and everything with the move was done based off of the weight of the truck and the weight of my stuff. So, I didn’t understand why it was taking so long. It didn’t really matter if there were little boxes or not. I used small wine and beer boxes to pack things so they were easier to lift versus using bigger boxes. Instead of having the normal-sized moving box that would be three times as much in weight, I used a wine box. There might have been more boxes, but the weight was about the same. Yet that played into the fact that we didn’t get the move done in one day.

The other issue was that they said they would get there between 9:00 and 11:00. My thought was if you’re trying to move somebody in one day, you would get there at 9:00, especially when there’s a four-hour drive between locations. But they got there at 11:15, which kinda put it out of the same-day move. In my mind, at that point, I had to get a hotel room because my bed was on the moving truck, so I wasn’t overly happy with that. Plus, I have a dog, and there are always extra charges with dogs in hotel rooms.

American Van Lines had me talk to the lady in Texas that set up the move, and also to the local dispatcher in North Carolina. But there has never been any conversation with anybody about compensation for all the troubles I went through. American Van Lines did a good job with the actual move. They moved everything properly, and I only had one or two things that were broken, so I was happy with that. If I'm trying to get the move done in a day, I’d probably go with one of the smaller companies where I could talk to the people ahead of time and get them on the same page.

American Van Lines said they had tried to get in touch with me early in the week. But I was finishing out a job, and I work 12-hour days as a physician’s assistant, so there was no time to talk on the phone. But I was told everything was set up and I was told what was gonna happen. When somebody tells me there’s a 95% chance something is gonna happen, that’s my expectation. Still, they did not lie to me. They just didn’t exactly push the truth all the way.

I had to move my moving date 4 times because of the storm coming in and then I couldn’t close on my property, so he was really great to work with me to fix the schedule every time.

I was separated and I had to move to a place that is 50 minutes away. The move went great. I already had my boxes packed so all they had to do was load and unload which took about 5 hours. However, my screen door got broken in the process and I didn’t notice it at first. They didn’t take the door off the hook and now, the door will not shut anymore. It seems like the door and the frame are not aligned anymore. I know that the front door was perfectly fine before but now it'll hit me in the butt by the time I walk in. I had few large pieces of furniture and I have a really large shrunk that I brought from Germany that's really heavy, and

that might have been what caused the problem with the door. Since too much time had passed, I didn't contact American Van Lines anymore. Besides, stuff like that happens when one moves and the people were really nice.

We moved 22 times as a result of 40 years' worth of federal service and the move with American Van Lines is the most reasonable and the best move experience we ever had. The lady that did the estimate did a tour of our house virtually because we had it listed for sale online. We went through each room, discussed it and after all the packing was done, she was off by nine bucks. She estimated within a few hundred pounds in regards to the weight. It was incredible how accurate she was, in looking at the house, talking to me, and then putting the estimate together. I couldn't say enough good things about her.

However, the more I thought about it, the less attractive that was. Also, there wasn't a U-Haul big enough for my stuff. So, I was gonna have to have two, but then I decided to just hire someone to get it done. I looked up online and American Van Lines was the first one that came up. I made a call. The reps who assisted me were very helpful. They kept me informed when they were gonna pick up because it was always a question. They'd give you a 48-hour window, but you never really know when they'd come. The moving crew was nice, too. The only thing was they showed up with my truck, but they only had an hour left on their time. So, they couldn't unload everything and what I needed was buried. Still, it was fine. The movers worked hard and we survived. American Van Lines was really helpful.

We wanted to live near the beach. We weren’t getting any younger, so we decided to sell our house in Forest City and move to the beach or near the beach. We talked to the American Van Lines reps and they told us how much it would be to move our goods from Forest City, which we originally lived, down to our new house in Carolina Shores, North Carolina, and we stored the goods for a month in Greensboro, at which time we paid to have them moved on down to our permanent house.

The lady that set it up the first part of our move was very helpful. And then the guys that came out and picked up our furniture were professional and knew what they were doing. They packed our goods up and they went to Greensboro. Then I talked to the coordinator. She called me and I filled out the necessary paperwork to have it moved on, and then I paid the freight charge to have it moved down to Carolina Shores. The group that came down here told us they were gonna be here at 10 o’clock, and they were right on the spot. They did what they said they were gonna do. And in two hours, they had the furniture unloaded and it was great.

They advised us that we had more modern marble top coffee table that was broken and I submitted a claim for that. The lady said we would hear something by the end of November and it's going into December now. Also, I have a small Road Trip grill which wasn’t broken when we've seen it, but it was broken when it was delivered. I had a thing in to American Van Lines for that. But 90% of the goods weren’t broken and everything is in good shape. American Van Lines did well and I was satisfied with them.

Then about a month later or six weeks later, I was moving stuff from Lemoore to Pompano Beach. On both times, the gentleman who loaded the trucks was very nice and there were no damage. The move to Lemoore was right on time. The other one, I expected to get my things about a week or a little sooner than what was written on the contract which is about three weeks but it took almost all that time to get here. The representative assured me that they would pick my goods up between the 1st and the 3rd of November, of course they came on the 4th. That delay cause a roller coaster of other problems that caused me more money. Speaking of money, beware of hidden fees, I ended up paying over $2000 more than what I was led to believe that I would pay. While they were loading, some guy calls me and tells me that the driver says the load is closer to 8000+ lbs than the 5000 lbs they estimated and that I would need to agree to a change in the contract to reflect the greater weight and higher charge and that if I didn't agree then the driver would have no choice but to only move what he had already loaded (half), leaving the rest of our stuff behind.

A threat right in the middle of loading was a ballsy and dirty move. Oh, and they didn't deliver the day that they said they would. We waited all day on the day the guy said they would come and they didn't show until the next day (didn't bother to call and let us know). These are just a few things that I had to go through with this company. I read a few positive reviews without looking deeper. Believe the negative reviews and save yourself the added stress and headache of dealing with this company. DON'T USE THIS COMPANY!

She provided me with a lot of good information and gave it to me in whole and had an accurate quote on what to expect. On the day the crew came to pick up everything from my house, two guys were awesome. But one of the guys didn't want to talk, even when I was friendly. Towards the end of the time that they were there, we still had stuff in our attic. I mentioned that to them, but they said that they were done and they left. My husband and I just dealt with it and it was a little frustrating. We ended up spending 12 hours moving stuff. We moved an hour away and the things that could be taken out from the attic and put in the trunk could have been handled quickly.

During delivery, I couldn't tip the delivery crew because the bank was so far away, so I offered to buy them lunch for $75 as tip. However, they were frustrated about that. The lead guy came back and had gotten one of our heaviest piece of furniture into one of the bedrooms. He asked me if I wanted him to move it up against the wall and I told him yes. I ran out, grabbed something and came back. That was when I saw the furniture was turned upside down. I still have heavy furniture that I can’t move by myself turned upside down. We ended up taking care of it ourselves.

I had a new job in Kansas, so we moved from Indiana. The two coordinators at American Van Lines were really helpful and they gave us a good idea of what we would be experiencing, what we needed to do and what the moving company would do. They prepared us pretty well for what we would experience. The driver was like the boss and he was a little frustrated because he was short-handed and he expected to have more people helping than he had. Besides himself, there were two other people. Later, a third person showed up but that person only worked for a few minutes, then he complained about his back so he would take a cigarette break. At some point, he stopped working altogether and he was trying to solicit us to pay him to do yard work or do some things around the house. He was talking behind their back about keeping an eye on them because of stuff walking away. He was a little sketchy and we didn't see him after the afternoon.

However, the driver helped off and on and the other two people worked like crazy. They were really hard workers, but they took longer than they planned to get all of our stuff loaded. Once we left, they beat us out to Kansas. They got here before we did and they unloaded. The process went okay, although one of the things about being short-handed was about the inventory list. They made a list of all the things that they were shipping and at the very beginning, the list was very detailed. However, at the end, they were just drawing a line straight down the page saying, "Items moved," because they were moving things so fast. When we unloaded everything when they took off, we began realizing that some things had been damaged and we had some things missing. We had an empty wardrobe that was damaged. They put something very heavy on top of it which broke the top of it.

My wife has a very large commercial baking pan that's lined with hardened ceramic clay. It's very heavy and easily weighs 150 pounds. They dropped it, so all the clay lining broke. We also had a two-wheel dolly cart, a 10-foot extension ladder and a 5-foot wooden stepladder that went missing. We called the driver and at the time, we only realized that we were missing the dolly cart and he said that it was still on his truck, so he was gonna make plans to meet me someplace because he lives in Kansas City, Missouri, which is about an hour and a half away. When I was about to make that appointment with him, we realized that our ladders were also missing, so I emailed him to ask if by chance the ladders were on his truck too, but I never heard back from him again. We filed a claim, but a claim is only so many cents per pound, so we're not gonna get much back on what was missing and damaged.

Overall, it was a good experience because all the stuff was moved and there were only two things that were damaged and three other things that walked away. The value was good and their price was way cheaper than competitor quotes. They were more accurate on the estimate and that's where the front-end person was really good in helping us estimate how much and what was needed. They were really spot-on with that. I would probably use them again.

Communication was difficult and staff doesn’t talk to each other. You need to keep schedule open for a 4 day period and get possibly 24 hours notice about the time frame of move. Of this 4 day period you have to stay open for they give you a 3 hour period I assumed the move would be done during. On pickup and delivery company was over an hour and half late without any communication beforehand and lame “traffic” excuses when they arrive. Once the movers actually arrived they were pleasant and very efficient but the whole process was a mess.

The coordinators need to either be trained to understand the mover’s job or just get rid of the position altogether. It would be much more effective just to have the customers communicate with the actual mover instead of someone who’s clueless sitting in an office across the country being the middleman. All of my items arrived in fine condition with all of this said. I picked my moving company based on this site's reviews so I’m not sure that they are accurate and not coerced in some way.

Then, he brought over some boxes and some stuff because it was part of the pre-negotiated deal with the listing service that I used. And he was super friendly.

I have a lot of heavy furniture and the moving crew had to move a little bit in the rain but they were fantastic. It was done in one day and I didn't have to store my things overnight. They handled my things like they were their own, so I was very impressed. Plus, the price was right and the move was smooth. I've recommended American Van Lines to other people, too. And if someone asked me if I heard of a good mover, I'd give them American Van Lines' number and tell them to contact Bryan because they were reliable and I felt comfortable with them.

Moving is a very stressful experience, especially if using a large interstate moving company. Moving 45 years of household goods and memories makes it even harder. After reading the reviews about American Van Lines I was sure that they would take care of us. I made lots of phone calls to my "personal mover" - I am betting I made a big nuisance of myself - my go-to person never made me feel like I was bothering them. If I had to leave a message, they called me back. AVL is a HUGE company that makes you feel like you are their only customer. Our driver Chuck stayed in contact with us and was very helpful in more ways than one (as well as the office personnel). Were there a couple of glitches... yes. But in the end, AVL came thru with everything they said they would. Bottom line, if we ever have to move again, I would use this company. I like the personal service!

I was moving from Half Moon Bay, California, to Tucson. At the time, I was looking for a long distance mover with good ratings and I decided to work with American Van Lines. Their rep and I stayed in constant contact. We had to change our moving date and every time I called them they were very accommodating. Their rep was very honest and would send us estimates. She supplied us with all the documents of what they can and cannot take. She also answered all our questions and specified in detail what kind of places the trucks can go into. Also, we are renting a house now and we were thinking we would have them pick up our stuff and keep it in storage until our house is completed. Their rep told us they could do that but it would get very expensive. So, instead, we will just call them again when we move to our new house.

I heard nightmare stories from my wife's brother who didn't use American Van Lines. Conversely, the moving crew I had was the best. Eddie was our truck driver and I’ve never ever seen anybody work as hard my entire life. I was surprised ‘cause I’ve used movers before when I was in the military, so this is the first time I had to pay for it. Though our estimate was a little bit lower than what we had to pay, it was still reasonable and we were more than happy to pay it. I'd tell others to choose American Van Lines.

The rep who helped us plan the details of the move told us everything we needed to know and gave us a fair quote, so we were happy with him. The move went smoothly and the moving crew was very good. The only complaint they had was that there were more stuff than what they were told. They were thinking that they could have come with a smaller truck based on what was told. They ended up bringing the larger truck, which was good, but it was filled to the brim. Everything was safe, so it was good. I would definitely recommend American Van Lines.

I was moving out of state and needed a van line. I went online and had some people come and give me estimates, but the great reviews that American Van Lines had prompted me to go with them. Initially, I had great interactions with my moving coordinator. But, I tried to get back to her at one point and I had a hard time. So I called the main number and have them transferred me to her phone. After that, it was okay. They kept in touch with me. The movers were excellent. There were two guys. They packed my my furniture up in New Jersey. I really loved that they were the same guys that were going to deliver my stuff here in Virginia. That put me at rest because I was really nervous about my stuff being lost or damaged. Knowing that they were gonna drive it down was great.

I packed my whole house, so all they had to do were the furniture and TV's. My husband also had a motorcycle that they had to pack, which was fine. They did a good job with the mirrors, too. The only thing was they told me that they were gonna deliver my goods on a Monday. I wasn’t to leave until Monday, but then, they changed their mind and they told me that it would be Sunday. Thankfully, my son lived around here so he was able to meet them. But if he hadn't been here, I probably would have incurred more cost. Also, I was on the road driving here, and the man that handled the payment called me while I was on the road. I had to juggle giving him my credit card information on the phone while I was driving. That wasn't good. Otherwise, it was a decent experience. American Van Lines is a good company to use.

He gave very detailed information and excellent follow-up. He was very thorough and easily accessible. From beginning to end, it took five days. They exceeded expectations. The communication with the driver was very good. The pickup took a little longer because we had used an elevator. Other than that, they were very efficient and thorough. It took them no time to off-load everything into our home. A container or two got a little dented but nothing inside was damaged. We've recommended them to friends.

We were moving from Asheville to Charlotte and I researched on the web. I found that American Van Lines has good reviews and once I got the estimate, the cost was better than some of the other places. The rate as well as planning with the rep were very good. The stuff leading up to the move was also great, but when you're planning a move and you've got people coming into your old house, you got a contract on the new apartment to live in and you plan a move time to get there. However, the truck was two days late. AVL kept telling us the driver was gonna be there any minute, but they didn't explain why. Clearly, there was miscommunication about when the guy was gonna arrive.

The 48-hour delay really messed up our plans and caused us some consternation, but the move went very well once it got going. We already packed everything in boxes and they wrapped the pieces of furniture in pads. Everything, including all the mirrors and pictures, arrived intact. You expect some things to get broken, and some of the delicate stuff we packed in our boxes were broken. My file cabinet was almost totally destroyed and I should have taken the stuff out, but that was a mistake on my part and I don't feel bitter or dismayed at all. We got a good deal.

The packers at the Florida end were exceptional. I asked them if they could shrink wrap around some of my boxes to make sure that I didn't get any creepy-crawlies in there. We had everything packed. The guys were happy about that, other than we had to mark everything and some items had to be taken apart and in special bagging, but we had everything boxed and ready to go. Until they got there, everything was not stressful, and they just made it very, very stressful.

When we came to the day before the move, we were called and told that the guy who originally was going to move us had an emergency. I understand, but there always has to be a plan B in business. So, their plan B was a man on vacation, who took our merchandise, packed it in his truck, held it for a week, and then delivered it. Still, the guy that actually did the driving of the truck, and the people who put it in his truck were very nice people. He knew what he was doing. He was a good guy. However, the truck was small, and they did mash our stuff in there pretty much, but it did all just barely fit. So, his truck was not as big as what we had been promised.

We then tried to get more information out of Brock, the salesperson but it didn't happen. Our merchandise went down to Wilmington, North Carolina for a week, and it was an unsecure feeling to not know it was on the way to our home. Except for the gentleman who moved us and did the best he could, the company altogether didn't stay on their feet. They didn't give us notices and stayed in touch with us. We had to do the calling.

Thank you for choosing our company for your recent move from NC to LA. We picked you up on July 28 and delivered you 11 days later on August 8 as promised to you. Your final bill was less than our estimate which is always a plus for our customers.

I am sorry you feel like your items were mashed into the truck but that's what a properly packed moving truck looks like. We have to strategically load your furniture and boxes into the truck like a big puzzle so nothing gets damaged. Please remember, nothing was damaged in the end.

I am sorry you didn't get the proper notices during the move as needed. We will review your file with our coordinator to ensure our future customers receive on time notices. We wish you and Diana the best in your new home.

We spent 37 years in the Marine Corps and have moving experience, so we are not new to a cross country move. The pack up and loading was fine. Contact with the driver and tracking the truck was a problem, and we were not able to schedule the delivery as originally planned.

It was making the damage claim that was the problem. We did not have much damage, only a few pieces, but 3 pieces of furniture are antiques and a Waterford standing floor lamp. The damage on the furniture was noticeable - damage on trim and ripping off coat hooks on a hall tree, and the crystal bulb on the lamp is missing - we presume broken. Contact with American was depressing. The coverage is not for damage, but an insignificant amount by weight. This could have been handled, given only 4 pieces, and should have been handled - the repairs are, in fact, achievable. I have contacted American twice and have been completely ignored.

    Dear Melvin,

Please accept our apology for the 3 pieces of furniture that was damaged during your move. This is the first time we are hearing about any damage since we moved you last year in October.

We do have a record of talking to you on July 13 when you asked about our claims process but we never heard back from you. Still to this day, almost 11 months after we moved you, we have not received a claim from you. Based on the pictures you have attached, I agree that these items can be repaired satisfactorily.

We are considered one of the top moving companies in the US and we are an approved carrier for the military too. Even though we use the best practices available in the industry to protect your items, sometimes damage may occur. Please also remember that we moved over 500 items for you.

Also, I was told during the call that the pickup date will be Aug. 3 to Aug. 5, delivery window Aug. 6 to Aug. 28 and I should get an update for both pickup and delivery on Wednesday. Got an email from a Quality Assurance Manager on Tuesday, replied an hour later with some questions (about 3 pm), no response. Called with the direct extension, no response.

By the end of the day, got an email saying the pickup will be on Aug. 3, no delivery time window update and will call me on Thursday with more information. On Thursday, waited all day and didn't get a call. Later they claimed that they called me several times, but I didn't receive even a voicemail nor email. I have to call back to the general customer service (none of the direct extensions for those who should be responsible for the move worked) to get a pickup time window, STILL NO delivery time window.

On Friday morning (today) there's still no update on delivery time window. Also we have an emergency and didn't know when we will arrive at our destination. So we are thinking cancel the move for now, as we did not get the delivery information as promised and the schedule can be a mess. Called the agent that helped us with the reservation, he said "you'll know the delivery time when the driver come for pick up" and the deposit we put was not refundable. That is absurd.

First, I was originally told that there's an accurate time window on Wednesday, then it was delayed to Thursday, and then Friday, AT the pickup time. They didn't hold the promise to inform the customer timely. There's no way we can make sure the schedule works based on a THREE WEEK delivery time window! Second, I have to call them most of the times instead of waiting for calls/emails, they just don't care. (An agent said they'll call me back for the issue, nothing after more than an hour.)

First off, they contracted my move to a company called Traditional Express Van Lines. They showed up a day late with a van that was way too small to accommodate my household. They claimed they got the numbers from American but if this was true they would've known they needed a bigger truck. Once finished, one of the movers advises me that it usual to tip 10% on a move like this, which is absolute ** as the total cost includes gas and mileage and what not.

He requested that I pay them $300 but if I can give more it would be great. I was then given a delivery date, well within the time frame they had estimated and I made adjustments to my work schedule to be able to receive the goods. Then this date was pushed forward because there were issues with the delivery truck. They still delivered within the time frame but I feel that is irrelevant. Don't give me an arrival date unless you know for sure they will be there.

I managed to be there when they unpacked but right after I had to rush to the airport to go away. I have now moved my things into my new home, or at least what is left of them. Due to incompetent movers and packing they have ruined the following items: 1. My dresser. The bottom frame has broken and it is now unusable. 2. My bookshelf is smashed and is unusable. 3. Two of my dining chairs have legs broken off. This happened on the move up as well. 4. My TV stand has been bashed in the front and the inside of the drawer is broken. 5. My lampshades were pushed into a box and has been all crumpled up. I cannot find one of my soundbars for my TV either and I will not be surprised if it is missing.

I have NEVER, EVER in my life had to deal with a company as incompetent and amateurish as this. It's borderline criminal and I just wish NO ONE will ever use their service again. It's a damned disgrace. I've tried calling my representative twice but they don't pick up. Stay as far away from these clowns as possible. They don't care about your move at all.

Frustrated with AVL. They picked up 6/23. On 6/6 the office said they had no word from driver so would call back on Monday. Sunday I get a call from driver that he’ll be here the next day at 1:00. Ok, even though I wasn’t expecting it, it would work out. Around 2:30 the next day I finally called the driver and he said he was still far away and he couldn’t get here til 6.

First of all, why couldn’t he call me to let me know he would be late? Second of all, I told the office people that there could be no moving after 5 or on weekends due to building policies. Why he was so late, I don’t understand. So I told the movers I couldn’t take it after 5. He said, "Well I'll have to deliver it another time." I asked if he could come at 7 the next morning and he said no, he has other jobs. So I was left with no info on when this would come again. I finally did find out it was put in storage in MA. It was coming from FL to PA.

It is now the 24 of July and I still have not been told when it will get here. Calls have taken anywhere between 1-8 days to return. I keep getting, I’ll call tomorrow to let you know... Next call is supposed to come tomorrow. Last time I heard this it took a week to call me back. I’m going on vacation next Monday! I never in my wildest dreams thought it would take this long.

They claim it’s my fault that I never told them before 5 pm. Supposedly they listened to all the recorded calls, but I know I told them and my sister was sitting right there when I made the reservation and she heard it. I was told by my original contact that I CAN listen to all the phone calls, and I plan to when I get back. I just want my mothers things before I leave so I’m not worried about it anymore. This is ridiculous. The communication is horrible. Sorry for the rant.

Updated on 08/10/2018: Saga continues. Even though American Van Lines claims this was resolved, problems continued after I agreed to $200 off my bill for the headaches during the long confusing delivery window. I had not yet received my things. They finally came at a time I told them I’d be out of the country on my first real vacation of a lifetime. After having so many near misses on delivery, including the promised week before this vacation, I decided to find a friend to be here when they set a date for the day after I left on vacation. Just to be done with them.

While on vacation, At a little after the time they were expected at my house, I called my friend to see if everything had gone ok. She said she never heard from them and was going to call them. I called the company and because I did, I averted another disaster. They were in the process of delivering my stuff to another client. Calls were made by the company and the furniture was rerouted to my address and they barely made it in time to move it into our condo. We have a 5:00 cutoff. So finally everything is delivered, or so I thought. Not the stress I wanted on vacation.

My friend sent pictures and I could see some things that concerned me. A box that was broken open, and a few things I couldn’t see that made the move. But, I figured I’d wait til I got home to really see what was what. To my shock when I got home, I open boxes and things are not wrapped in paper or bubble wrap as expected but rather wrapped in towels that look like they were pulled from my deceased mother's estate?! I know we had bagged up all the linens and had bags of them sitting in the living room to be dropped off.

The glass on the clock my grandfather made was all broken, it was wrapped in one towel and set in the bottom of a box and then other things were put on top of it. It was not packed tightly so I can imagine things bumping around in there. Then a huge dish pack was loaded with various glass and silver items, again wrapped in towels. There was an antique Tiffany lamp wrapped in a mattress pad?!! Amazingly was not broken. This was in an American Van Line box so I know the movers packed it. When I called the company, they are telling me that they didn’t wrap most of the boxes. My brother set the glass things I was taking into boxes just to keep it organized in the midst of all the other things being moved out of my mothers estate.

I had packed what I could but left the breakables to the “professionals”. When he told the movers these things needed to be “packed”, it seems the movers didn’t know enough to actually wrap and pack these things as professional movers and just threw in some towels and packed the glass items in the boxes he had set to be “stuff to be packed and moved”. Wouldn’t a professional moving company make sure they secured breakables if their client (me) told them they would be needing to wrap and pack some breakables that I left for them? Yet they just taped up these non moving boxes without consulting with my brother who was there when they were.

And the worst part is my parent’s chest of silver flatware is nowhere to be found. It is very sentimental to me and yet I have no idea where it went. They are looking for it but after seeing the poor organizational abilities of this company, it will be a miracle to get it in my hands. The drop off driver left me the wrong order slip and instead left the slip for the other place they started delivering it to. I contacted that person and pray to God that my silver ends up there. It is insane!! I advise you to use a reputable company and get every little detail in writing, documented and detailed. They list boxes on my packing slip as big, little, medium. That really does not give you any specifics for when you need to file a claim about the service.

I would also oversee every little thing they pack and label as the company is claiming they only packed 2 boxes when in fact they packed 5. I could not be there for the pick up, as often happens for busy working people moving from one town to another, but I highly recommend you are. This has been a total nightmare and taken up my whole summer. I even had to deal with issues on my vacation! It just never ends, now as I await my silver and will to file claims on broken items among other things. I will say one person took on my case (why I rated 2 stars) and has tried to get things resolved but the company is too disorganized and it’s out of his control. Also, they do outsource their actual movers so you never know the quality. I had NO problems when I made another cross country move with Mayflower. What a difference. To be continued...

The moving coordinator came and surveyed what needed to be done, gave recommendations, provided boxes and tape, and then other things that we required. He maintained contact to be sure that everything was going as expected. The packers also did a wonderful job and were very professional and thorough. They provided all of the necessary and even helped with things that I was not absolutely sure of as to what direction it should go. It was a good experience.

The moving coordinator from American Van Lines was very thorough and very easy to work with. She understood our situation and did what she said what she was gonna do. I had two different crews come because part of my stuff was going to an apartment and part of it was going to storage, so there was a lot of activity. On a whole, everything was excellent.

But I had an incident where people were trying to get everything done quickly, and a sticker was put on a gold leaf frame of a very expensive painting of mine, and I told them they can’t do that. And when it was pulled off, it pulled off the gold leaf. I was gonna make a claim but the guy told me that I could do that but it would be taken out of their pay. And so I wasn’t gonna take it out of their pay because they worked hard. But this was so unnecessary because every painting was boxed. So the sticker could have gone on the box or it could’ve gone on the back of the painting. This was supposed to be a corporate moving team, so I was not happy with that. Other than that, everything else was very efficient. They were polite, professional, and they did a great packing job.

They had five people packing for my stuff that was going to storage, but they only had three people packing for my move to the apartment. I was supposed to be in my apartment that night but I didn't get in. That was a little bit inconvenient and it was a very difficult move for me because I had pneumonia. But with all that being said, they were very easy to work with.

One person was in contact with us about all the items in the house and as far as knowing how big of a truck to get and that all worked out great. We knew that we should over-estimate rather than under, so they were clear that it would be by weight and not by items, so it was good. The people during the move were great. We weren’t here when our stuff arrived but the loading process and the driver were great. That day was lickety-split. They had it really well done. American Van Lines did their end of the deal really well. I would tell other people to use them and I already have.

We were moving from Texas to Arizona. We were going home. And our son, who is an attorney, did some investigating about the different van lines and found out that American Van Lines is a decent organization. Their customer service was okay and there was a lot of phone calls back and forth with our moving coordinator. American Van Lines didn't give a quote, but there was a minimum and if you go overweight, then you pay so much more. They'll give you a firm quote, but then if you don't make that weight, you still have to pay that price. And once we signed the papers saying we were going with American, the guy we initially contacted gave us to somebody else. And they did okay and we got the move done.

The crew was good but the driver was never available. He was supposed to be there at 11 o'clock and we talked to him that morning at 7:00. And the day he was supposed to deliver our furniture, he got here and he was out of time but he had checked out with his company. So he couldn't come out, and he said he was sitting at a Walmart. I've lived here for my whole life and I knew where the Walmart was. It was 20 minutes away. So it would not have been an effort to come on out. But he couldn't do that because he was out of time. He was in town at 8 o'clock in the morning. So, it was sketchy at best. And he had his own agenda.

Overall, American Van Lines will get the job done, but you got to be on top of them all the time. We had used somebody else when we moved before and my experience with American Van Lines was about the same. They're all the same. They wanna sell you their product and then they have their own agenda after that. And American Van Lines was priced right compared to the people we had before. It was a fair deal for what we had. Also, we only had two issues when it came right down to a two pieces of broken glass and we're still waiting for the American to decide what they're gonna do with it.

It would have been helpful if somebody could have come out and looked at my property. Also, they underestimated the packaging that we would need. Otherwise, my move from Texas to Nevada went fine. The folks that came out to do the packing were there and the company in Florida was able to help coordinate all the times. They made sure that everybody was there when they were supposed to be and it all worked out well. They did a good job.

We haven't moved in 36 years so I had to find the best company out there. I went to ConsumerAffairs and they rated them as the top one, so I called them. The first person that spoke with was Steven and he was very nice. And then Teresa called all the other times and she was very, very nice to us as well. Every question that we had, they answered. I had to tell them that I had more household items to move and they just accommodated me.

Our driver was Ronald and he did a wonderful job. He was very, very accommodating and he handled everything. The moving crew worked until they got their stuff done. I haven’t had anything broken, but I wrote to Teresa to tell her that one of my husband’s printer was missing. She accommodated us and gave us $75 credit. But two days ago, I opened one of the big boxes and there it was inside. So I told her to readjust the $75. We were very, very happy with the service and they got here really quickly.

My husband and I were moving back to Texas which is our home state for my husband's job. I worked with Brian who came out and gave me an estimate. He came out about four times because I sold some furniture as there were some stuff I decided not to take and to make sure that we were right on target with the cost.

Everything with the move went really well. The movers showed up when they said they were, we didn't have anything damaged nor broken, and the pricing was good. Our only outstanding issue is with the baby grand piano which we had an outside scheduler for and that went horrible. Also, the only complaint I have was that one of the movers complained nonstop. I know it was hot and exhausting, but it was also the job. The funny thing was, I was in Florida and a gentleman was complaining, and then my husband was in Dallas to accept delivery and he told me that there was this guy who just kept complaining. And it was the exact same guy. The team argued a bit too which was unprofessional. Still, I would tell my friends that it's been pretty easy moving with American Van Lines.

I actually used the Consumer Affairs reviews to decide to call American Van Lines for a move from Missouri to Oregon. I had a good experience talking with "Keith" who took all my information and inventory of belongings. I was downsizing, selling much before the move and had minimal belongs left. I was quoted $3800 and satisfied with that quote, proceeded to make the reservation. I was told a contract would be sent and they needed a credit card number for the contract down payment, which I gave. The next day, before the contract was emailed to me, I was called by Keith and told that "sorry, too bad," but prices were raised beginning on the date I needed, and it would now be $5,000. I said, "DO NOT PROCEED, do not charge my credit card," and Keith agreed that he would not. I called a few other companies and all quoted $3800, so this is apparently an industry standard for a minimal shipment this distance.

I went with another company. I called Keith back to say I wasn't going with them and to verify again that I would not be charged. Imagine my surprise a couple of days later when I saw that American Van Lines had charged me $1900. It took one day less than two weeks and more than one phone call to get this "refund" which I had not given them authorization to charge in the first place. I would not do business with this company. It was a bait and switch, and with no contract with me, they charged me as if they had one, then claimed it took several business days to issue a "refund," even though it took no days at all to charge it.

    Hi Carol,

I’d like to apologize for the miscommunication you received when we quoted your move. After Kevin spoke to you, he realized a mistake was made on your estimate and called you back 30 minutes later to explain the difference. You chose to cancel your move at that time and look for another option. Kevin didn't realize that your credit card was charged by our computer system since you booked the move within an hour previously. When you notified us of the charge days later, we quickly reversed the charge and credited your card. Even though we did the credit immediately, your credit card company may take a week or more to show the credit.

We contact America Van Lines (AVL) in April for a move/pick up on June 28-30. We agreed to their terms and provided a 50% deposit. Our move is from AZ to PA. On June 23 Chole from AVL called and stated the truck scheduled to move us broke down and they were working on a solution. From her call till June 29, we had no idea when our items would be picked up. On June 29 Chole called and stated our items would be picked up June 30 between 9-12 am. The driver contacted us the morning of the move and stated he had NO help and his truck was full so he was not going to pick up our items. Several calls to Customer service and we feel we are left in a poor situation. We have to be in PA by this coming Friday and it's a four day drive. At this point I would never recommend the company to anyone.

Instead we both agreed to pick you up on July 10 or 11th which was a date that was acceptable to you. They were their own company and they had people they worked with all over the country. Plus, once I started looking around and getting other quotes, American Van Lines' customer service was amazing compared to other companies. So, I went them. The moving coordinator that I worked with was very responsive and sent stuff over to me right away via email for me to look over. He was great as opposed to the one who interviewed me who just kept saying, “Fill out this sheet and I’ll call you back.” He spent a lot of time with me and told me to go through every room and tell him what I saw. He was really cool.

Their pricing was also very transparent. I forgot some things when I was being interviewed, so I emailed them back and they said that they would add those on and at the end of the day would sort of zero out everything, which they did. I also liked that they went by weight, not by square footage. But I didn’t like that they were adding a $300 charge on top of the weight for the kayaks that I initially forgot and added on because they were oversized. My husband has a pickup truck and we were driving out from Delaware to Florida on it. So, he just put those on the back of his truck. Other than that, the crews on both ends were amazing. They were very professional, thoughtful, kind, and hard workers.

Scam and unethical people to deal with. Avoid hiring them for your move. I am sure you will NOT bother to contact them after you read our ordeal. I am disappointed that this portal doesn’t allow me to rate them on negative stars. We went around shopping for quote planning our move from Pittsburgh PA to California CA. We live in a 3-bedroom townhome and after a proper video screening our entire home, with this esteemed – American Van Lines company gave us a quote of 8,800$ and plus at the max it would go up to 20% higher from the initial estimate. On believing this lie, I proceed with hiring them. We paid half of our moving fee at least by a month in advance and just 4 days before the moving window, we receive the note saying that they do not have a truck to support this move. They said that they will refund and requested us to proceed with other vendors.

Imagine, JUST 4 DAYS BEFORE THE PLANNED MOVE. My wife had to talk and email them multiple time to make them work. They persuaded us to work with their partner - Boost Express Vane Lines at the last minute. Day 1 of the move, they started after 3 PM, packed half of our stuff and said will continue tomorrow, and they needed an 18-wheeler to move our things. And they NEVER mentioned a word about increasing our quote on day 1. Day 2, the continued packing and loading our things into the truck. And then I see a BOMB, they increased our quote from 8,800$ to 14,700$. I am at the point where I am sedated and the doctor opened my chest for a heart surgery, and in the operation theatre I am asked to sign an agreement that I would die and the treatment is just a hoax. They told me the estimate would not go beyond 14,700$ (lie number 2) and it would, in fact, come lesser based on the weight.

I had no option but to sign as my things are being packed and kept in their truck. So finally, I did the sign and was hoping that the things would reach safely at the destination. And I paid another check for 4,400$. On the whole, I have paid them 8,800$ approximately as an advance; which was their original estimate. American Van Line agent called us next day and claimed we need to pay them 12,000$ before deliver. What a SHOCKER. The agent didn't do his groundwork. We had to walk through about the payment history and only then he realized we have already paid them 8,800$. Such an unprofessional attention to details. Firstly, it wasn’t our fault that they estimated my house poorly. If they had given me a proper estimate I would have even gone to another provider who was just a 1000$ more than American Van Lines initial estimate.

Secondly, 4 days before the move day. They backed out of this move commitment and we had to persuade them to stop quitting and do something. And then they introduced the 3rd party. Boost Van Lines, unnecessarily increased our estimate to sky high. And made us sign increased quote at the last minute. If I had known my quote would go high I would have happily trashed my old things. Instead, the old materials were all packed and kept in the truck and then we were forced to sign the new agreement. This is a clear-cut SCAM. The story doesn’t end here. In the middle of the transit, our final estimate grew even bigger, up to 16,700$ approximately. Their customer service manager contacted us after we complained about this on Yelp, Google Reviews, and Consumer Review. She offered us a deal. Sign an agreement, to withdraw your complaint, modify your online feedback; then we will reduce our price by 1,500$ approximately.

We argued our case and asked her to reduce it even further. Because our initial estimate was only 8,800$ and what they are asking now is two folds higher. She wouldn’t agree and we had to accept what was offered. Our things arrived San Diego, finally. We received it and settled the balance (except for 1,500$ as per our conversation). But the truck driver wouldn’t agree and took our credit card info and made sure we pay the balance. My wife contacted customer service, twice. And then she replied, asking us to contact Operations Manager to work further. My wife had to sit through another call and had to explain Dave the entire ordeal. And finally, we lost our temper, Dave treated us as liars and that they did not pack and load it before I signed the second agreement. Already moving was a big stress, and American Van Lines people were simply putting us for a toss and they didn't really care about customer service.

Their only attention was bright and focused on pulling money out of customers. My wife and I are Engineers with Master degrees, working in a very reputed company and to be treated as liars is all that we could take. I shut the call with Dave and told him not to bother my wife anymore. You can cheat us, keep our money and the rest is in God's hand. I sincerely do not want another human being to experience such a bad situation. DO NOT HIRE AMERICAN VAN LINES for your move. They are a rip-off and don’t care about the human relationship. They will con you into a business by quoting least estimate, but later increase them by 2-fold.

I liked the idea that American Van Lines would do the pickup with a small truck. The location was another reason I chose them. The moving coordinator that I worked with was knowledgeable and efficient, and everything worked out good. I had a special request to have my wife sign off at the pickup end so I did a power of attorney for that and then I was at the other end for the delivery. I had a one-man crew and he was very good. It was quite efficient in terms of time. I've had crews of four and they usually still fool around in the afternoon. But he got done in a couple of hours. It wasn't a huge load but he went back and forth, did the whole thing himself and got through very quickly.

Our experience with American Van Lines was good except for the fact that they kept changing people that I had to talk to all the time. So, I never really got to develop a rapport with anybody and if I had a question or a problem, I didn’t know who to call. When I did have an issue, I’d always have to go through one person, and then they would say I’d have to get a hold of somebody else, and then they would have to call me back. So, it’s a long process. Other than that, the crew was excellent. They were on time during pick up and delivery, and they called me before they were gonna deliver. They also loaded and unloaded everything really well.

I was moving from Idaho to Illinois for work and I had good and bad experience with American Van Lines's moving coordinator. I felt they were really, really thorough, but they made some mistakes. The guy told us that once we've paid for the piano boards, it would be ours. And then, when we first went to take it before the piano company was there to put it back together, it turned out it wasn’t ours.

So, there was this big hassle of trying to get everything coordinated between the piano company putting the piano back together and the moving company trying to take their piano boards back. The guy admitted that he made a mistake, so I felt that was really awesome of him. He didn’t deny it. On the other hand, the moving crew was good. However, they weighed us wrong. They said that our weight came in almost 2,000 lbs. heavier and they were gonna charge us an extra $2,500. We did get it reweighed and it came in 2,000 lbs. lighter. Once they figured out the issue with the reweigh, everything was taken care of quickly.

Everything was great when I dealt with the moving coordinator at American Van Lines and although the crew was about an hour late on one end, it was explainable. And other than that, they were fine.

We moved across country, from Maryland to Arizona, and we had our stuff catch up with us a couple of years later. We were moving from a storage unit and I had everything packed in there tight. When I called around, some said they would have to come out for an estimate. But I wasn't at the source side, which was back in Maryland. Secondly, I was not sure how much they could've looked at 'cause it was also packed in the storage unit. Nobody would give me an estimate but American Van Lines did. That aside, everything seemed to go smoothly with them. The moving coordinator did a good job keeping me informed. When I had things to contact him about, he resolved them real quickly.

We had one pickup site but then on the destination side, we had two places for our stuff to go, which was pre-arranged. But we had to go through our things piece by piece as they brought them off the truck at the first destination. We then decided if the item went there or on to the second destination. We were very cooperative with that. The whole move took two and a half weeks, which worked for us, and I was pleased with the experience. I would highly recommend them. They were easy to deal with and reasonably priced.

Their packing and loading were flawless. In other words, there was not a single scratch or damage to any of the stuff that I sent out to my son. But about two months after they completed the move, we were startled to know that the load had weighed differently than what they had anticipated. So we got a refund of about $600. A lot of companies would just keep it. I'm 75 years old and I've moved about 17 times in my life and this is the best experience I've ever had.

But they told me it was coming on a big truck and it came on a small truck. The guy told me the truck broke down. They had to take my stuff off the truck and put it on another truck. Some of the stuff was damaged and a box was missing, which were not really urgent to me. But they came at 7:00 o'clock at night, which I’m lucky that where I live they let them in. But the moving crew was very nice.

The other complaint I have is when they came to pick it up. There were 2 men. I had everything boxed and all they had to do was wrap it up. They did an excellent job but one of them made it very clear to me that he wanted to be tipped. I was giving him $50 and I dropped it to $20 because he insulted me like that and asked me for a gratuity. He told me he’s been with the company for about three years. I’m sure some people don’t tip, but I gave him water because it was hot out. But to ask me? That was not nice and professional.

And they were leaving me messages about deliverymen picking up stuff the next morning at 7 o’clock their time and we had a big problem with that because I had to reach out to the person.

They were picking up an item at a storage unit but I don’t start work until 8 o’clock. So they had already been sitting there for an hour and I had to triage the situation. So that did not go well at all and the amount of time that we were told it would take for it to be transported and arrived here was at least double what they told me initially. It wasn’t three or four days. It took almost 10 days. And they didn’t deliver it at the time that we discussed at 8 o’clock. They delivered it later in the day. But the drivers were great. The box was slightly damaged, but the item was okay. Overall, the price was right, but the communication was not so great.

I asked them the time that the truck would arrive and the rep told me that I was first on the list. I was in the house at 8:00 but the truck got there by 11:00.

And then when we got to Maryland, they said they would be there between 11 and 12, but the driver called about 11:00 and said he was in still in Washing DC so he couldn't get there until 5:00. Their timing was way out of sync. But they were very gentle with my antique tea card and desk, and they wrapped it. The moving coordinator from American Van Lines gave me a lot of good information so he did a very good job. I had the weight of my belongings and he took it from there and it was a pretty smooth process. I ended up paying a little bit more, which was okay because I had more boxes than I thought I had. But he was really helpful with breaking down the rate. He was really up-close for anything that I had to do. Also, the move was great. When night came, the movers had to pack everything I had for me because I had a lot of my personal belongings already packed in boxes. They did everything they were supposed to do. They tagged all the furniture, shrink-wrapped what they had to shrink-wrap and brought boxes where they had to bring boxes.

I had a three day window between April 28 and April 30 for them to come, and they picked up my stuff on the 28th on a Saturday. Three hours later, they were gone. My delivery window was the 3rd through the 10th, but they delivered my stuff on the 5th. The coordinator called me on Thursday evening the 3rd, and said they would notify me what time they were gonna be there on the 5th, on Saturday. The delivery window was between two days because I didn’t want them to get here prior to me signing my lease, and they were here right on time. They unpacked everything and nothing was broken. My daughter that lives north of Chicago is planning on moving to Florida in early August, so I recommended her to American Van Lines. I moved about 1300 miles from Florida to Texas, and they were also organized and efficient when they moved. But they didn't give me enough time to tell me when the furniture was gonna be delivered. I wasn’t there at the time and my sister was the one making arrangements to be there at the house. I asked for two or three days and they said, “Sure, sure. No problem.”

It's a fluid situation with people closing on houses and having to put it off, but it still would be beneficial if they could give as much notice as possible, at least two days' notice. But they said they would be here between three and six days so you would have to clear your calendar. Then they gave us less than a day’s notice to be there. I didn’t think that was fair but that seemed to be for all moving companies because I was doing two moves and the other one was the same way. American Van Lines' people were better communicators than the first ones though.

Aside from giving me less than 24 hours' notice, it was also on a Sunday that they told me they were coming and there was a little problem with that. I was not gonna have my sister miss church and sit there between 8:00 and 11:00 waiting for the driver to come. But we worked out a time of noon and he was there promptly and everything worked out.

Worst experience ever!! When I called for a quote, I was told American Van Lines doesn't contract out their packers/movers. I went through our house and inventoried everything and got an estimate weight. Moving day comes and Five Star movers show up. Turns out they do contract out after all. They roll up in a delivery-size truck and I instantly knew it wouldn't be big enough for a 3 bedroom house with basement. The movers said it would hold up to 12k pounds.

Day 1 went fine, but day 2 finishes up and the truck is full and the weight was over the estimate. They asked us what furniture we could leave behind. We said nothing. They said 'too bad' and LEFT OUR FURNITURE BEHIND! We called American and they said we under-estimated the weight (implying it was our fault) and now my husband has to fly out and rent a truck to retrieve our stuff!!! DO NOT use this company. Whoever you do use, either get an on-site estimate or over estimate your weight. Otherwise you'll get screwed!!!

I apologize for the negative experience you incurred with our company and for the delayed "public" response on our part. We were hired to move you from TN to VA on June 7th. On May 31st, we made you aware our truck was running behind schedule and we asked if you were flexible on your pick up date. Since you were not flexible, we offered to have our agent do the move on the date you needed and you agreed. We were still fully responsible for your move and in communication with you the whole time. At pickup, you had nearly double the amount of items to move than we originally agreed to. We had to get a second truck to finish your move because of this major change on your part. Please remember the estimate we gave you was based on an agreed list of items for us to move. A dozen or two more items usually doesn’t affect your price but you had 153 more items to be moved or almost double your original agreement. In an effort to work with you, we discounted the price heavily to help you. All of this was agreed to before we started your move. In the end, even though we weren’t prepared to move double the amount of items, we still performed your move on time and without any damage.

We do not believe your disappointment in the price increasing is our fault. We do take blame if you received poor customer service from our company. We will review all of this with the team that was involved.

This is in no way an excuse, but rather an explanation of facts.

If we are still able to mend the issue in some way, I would be happy to come to a reasonable resolution with you. Please email us at supervisor@americanvanlines.com.

Thank you again for your business and we hope to turn this negative experience around.

The men that came to pack and moved us were very pleasant and hardworking. Michael, the supervisor over there, did a great job. However, we were a little disturbed when we opened one of our boxes and found that one of the workers had wrapped the chicken bones that we had bought in Chicken For Lunch like it was a packed package. When my wife opened it, it was snowing terribly and we were shocked. We tipped them well every day, and it probably cost $500 bucks in tips, plus we bought their meals every day. But the package made my wife sick to her stomach. There was also a piece of fine china that got chipped.

Also, they had to hold the truck because I was closing on my house. They packed me on a Friday and loaded me on a Saturday. My house closing was on Monday, so they had to hold it one day and deliver it on Tuesday. The cost they estimated based on what I told them was 8,200 lbs. It came up to $10,000, but the hold cost me another $750 and I was not happy with that. But overall, we were pleased with them. I just hope we don't have to move again and use them.

American Van Lines was referred to us by our real estate agent who handled our transaction to sell our place. They were excellent and very helpful. They delivered all the supplies way ahead of time when we needed them. And they packed us up, did a perfect job and then when they unloaded, they did a better than perfect job. The move was from South Florida to Eastern Tennessee, about 580 miles, and everything was on schedule. They ran into some problems because of the computer in their truck and they called to let us know, and they were very polite.

I'd recommend American Van Lines to anybody who would ask for movers. They did a great job and moved me faster than we had anticipated and they charged us accordingly. So, I was pleased with that. Renee, the moving consultant, did a great job, and the moving crew worked real hard and steady. We did have rain during part of the move which they had to kind of stop for a few minutes because they didn’t wanna move the furniture in the rain but they loaded the trucks pretty quick and didn’t take a lunch break. It was a local move, so it was about a 30-mile drive. They went straight over here and unloaded the trucks and put everything in place and placed things where I asked them to.

American Van Lines was the quickest to respond to my inquiries when I was searching for a mover. John, the first person I spoke with at American Van Lines, was really interested in what I wanted, listened to what I had to say, and answered my questions very quickly. He spoke with me a couple of times, then he passed me along to the moving coordinator. The moving people were friendly and professional, and they worked quickly. They explained everything and told me what they were gonna do in advance, and they did it.

Everything went according to plan. The only hitch was that the truck was gonna get to Florida before we did and the moving coordinator was gonna add a charge for not being able to deliver on the day that they thought they would. But I explained to them the situation that our stuff couldn’t be delivered on time because of their time window and my schedule, and they knew that in advance, so they said they would not put on the extra charge and everything worked out. I would refer American Van Lines without hesitation. In fact, I have recommended them to some of my neighbors.

We selected American Van Lines (AVL) due to the timely quote over the phone and the good online reviews (both Consumer Affairs and Google reviews). The sales agent went through contents in each rooms with me over the phone, and was able to provide an estimated household content weight and cost. The estimated cost was at the lower range shown in Moving.com, so I selected AVL based on the good reviews. The loading dates and delivery dates were provided in a time window in the estimate. This usually is not a issue, except our new condo in Denver has a more strict move-in/move-out procedure; that an appointment needs to be made ahead of time, over weekdays only. This complicated our unloading arrangement, but our AVL coordinator was doing his best to accommodate this requirement.

The mover was a "reciprocal partner" of AVL, called Always Affordable Moving & Storage/East Coast Van Lines (AAMS), base in New Jersey. Frankly I was a bit concerned when I was told by AVL that their reciprocal partner was going to move us, but the AAMS crew was business-like, hard-working, efficient, trustworthy and capable. They had a dedicated crew that came with the truck, instead of helpers hired from the street, as some other movers do. The crew that loaded us in South Carolina also unloaded us in Denver, which I much appreciated! I would have given my moving experience a 6-STAR, if the estimated weight matches closely with the actual weight, but we ended 60% over the estimated weight, so the final cost was proportionally higher. I accepted this dependency, as the crew at AAMS commented to me that our load would be much overdue to heavier furniture and extra items.

I still believe the final moving cost is very competitive, but a word of caution is that, weight estimate over the phone is still no substitute for an experienced mover coming to the house for estimate. For someone assuming a defined budget, basing on the phone estimate CAN BE a big issue! Also, one needs to seriously consider the consequence of a flexible loading and unloading date arrangement like these. For me, it was almost a BIG ISSUE, as the truck was already dispatched to Denver, to unload on a date that was originally not open at our new condo. (The date was later freed up due to a canceled event. Lucky me!!)

The AVL coordinator had a different account of the dates I told him that were available for unloading, but he is forgiven. I was pleased that the household goods arrived intact after a 2000+ mile journey and 2 weeks, which should be the result of good packaging and careful handling. Combined with my positive experience with AAMS and the crew, I am giving a 5-STAR to my moving experience. Moving is never fun, but this turned out to be a safe and smooth move.

American Van Lines' moving coordinator was good and she reiterated a lot of things. The movers in San Diego until we got to Oklahoma City were professional. They were great, and they didn’t misconduct themselves, cuss and get on complaining. And there were three boxes that were not checked off on the sheet, and about five weeks later, the driver sent somebody from Dallas to come back to Oklahoma City to give us our remaining boxes. He was cordial enough to let me know he had the boxes. He had many households on his truck and I understood that he couldn't just bring them down and go back so he gave me a timeline. For the most part, it was fulfilled and everything was returned. And if I was moving again across state, I would call American Van Lines again.

There were 2 major issues with our move. First and biggest, they tried to cancel our move with less than a week's notice. Second, our belongings were late. Issue #1: mover cancellation. We booked our move in January 2018 for a load date of 3/12-3/14/18. When I called to provide the delivery address the week before our move was scheduled, I was told that something had come up with one of their trucks and, with less than a week's notice, they "wouldn't be able to service my move". Note - I had to call THEM to find this out. After many frantic phone calls (and us having to change multiple travel plans because we were flying to where our belongings were for pick-up), they were able to reschedule for later in the week.

Issue #2: despite the drama above, our belongings were actually picked up on 3/12/18, so I had no reason to think they would be delayed past what the contract said. We had a delivery window from 3/14/18 - 3/29/18, and the company failed to meet this. My dissatisfaction with this company applies only to the company itself, and not the awesome, hard-working movers who actually serviced our move. Every mover I met in person was exceedingly professional, kind, and easy to work with.

When I first talked to American Van Lines, they were really good. Then when they came to pick up all my goods from Arizona, it was excellent. They were really good people. They packed up everything, packed stuff neatly and marked the boxes. They were quick, they didn’t break anything and didn’t push anything around. And the hired help they had were really good. But when it came to unloading here in Maryland, it was a different story.

They didn’t deliver it at the right house. I had to get the truck driver to finally make them reload it back up and come down to the next house. But they weren’t supposed to be on the property until 11 o'clock because the real estate people were supposed to come and let them in and they were already unloading at 9 o'clock when I pulled up at 9 o'clock. If I had been 30 minutes later, they'd have the truck half unloaded right there in the driveway. They didn’t even have the open house. They were just unloading in the driveway.

Also, none of the help that they hired to unload the moving van could speak any English. They weren’t from Mexico 'cause I know a lot of Mexicans and I speak Mexican. But those people were from Guatemala or some place and they broke things. They tore stuff up and smashed boxes. There's an antique wooden rocking horse that's signed and it's over a 100 years old and they broke the ears off of that. It's worthless now. There's nothing they can do it. They can repair one of the ears but half of one of the ears is missing on the rocking horse. Even if you send it to a person and they repair it, it's still a repaired piece. It was very valuable and it was put in my care and it's fell back on me that the thing got broken. It's upsetting.

I've called and called them and they never return my calls. Then one of the supervisors that I finally got ahold of out here in Maryland was rude. I said, "Well, you don’t know what you're talking about because you weren’t on the site. You're talking about hearsay somebody's told you." And he was probably well-educated by the sound of him but he was rather rude. They sent me a bunch of information so I could make claims on the damages. But I found out that they were only going to pay 6%.

I want to clarify the comment you made about delivering to the wrong house. We set up our truck to deliver your items to a house on your property instead of the barn. We didn't know you wanted the items in the barn instead of the house. The review makes it sound like we were trying to deliver to a stranger's house.

The first person that I talked to was the consultant, while the second person was my contact throughout that I could call anytime. The ones that moved us out were great, and the ones that moved us in were great as well. What I paid for was probably three times more than the estimate, but it was my fault since I didn’t tell them all the things that I had. Plus every moving company gives you a way lower estimate than what actually is the cost and that's incredibly frustrating.

I got a couple of quotes from moving companies and American Van Lines had the same quote so, I just went ahead with them. Marcus, our moving coordinator, was initially good but he dropped the ball two or three times and I was unhappy with that. The first one was when I asked if our large mirror could be considered furniture and if they could wrap it up or sent separately. He said sure and told us to send him a photo to ask their quality assurance department. He said he would get back to me but he never did and we had to box up before the movers came. I just ignored it and the mover assisted us in moving it.

Then, the first call I got that the movers were coming was from the driver. Marcus never informed me via email or call that they were going to come the next day. I had about an 18-hour heads up that the drivers were coming. I called him on a Saturday to ask if it could be pushed back at all and I knew I was limited by calling him on a Saturday. And I knew some things are unchangeable but we didn't get a 24-hour notice which is what I thought we were supposed to get. Marcus said he would look into it and get back to me. I didn't hear anything and I called back and realized the office closes at three o'clock. I haven't talked to Marcus since and I don't care to.

But the crew during the move was great. Tim and Ralph were very helpful and understanding. Tim was really good with the whole process, the move, and the delivery. He told me when they left. They were going straight from our location to our storage unit. So, he told us what day and time and he was flexible with that as far as where to meet.

Their moving consultant was very helpful. She called in to check on us to see if things are going well and if we had any questions and my questions got answered. However, it was clear that I was not familiar with moving terminology as the coordinator was. Sometimes, I had a hard time understanding what she was talking about. But the only complaint is I didn’t realize that once I contract to have my things moved, the moving coordinator moves on and passes it over to someone else. And I spent several times calling the coordinator and trying to get some questions answered but she never returned the call. And then I later found out it was because my account had been given to a customer care representative who worked very well.

The crew was extremely careful, polite and pleasant. They’re fun to work with. It was the same crew that packed us up unloaded us so we knew who to expect. That didn’t happen the first time we moved a few years ago. My wife did a bunch of research, but in the end, the prior reputation of American Van Lines especially the two positive moves by our son was how we ultimately settled on choosing them. The moving coordinator was very responsive. We talked regularly. I oftentimes had to play a bit of phone tag. But overall, as we finalized the estimates and make a few changes at the end, it worked out well.

It was about 1,000 miles move, from Dallas to Prescott. We originally were given a three-week window of delivery so it was a wide range and we just estimated because we had a very small load. Our load was maybe a quarter of the big semi truck, really small. We found out on the day of the move that they were going to deliver the next day or the day after. And so the delivery arrived at our destination here in Prescott three or four days before we arrived. And so that caused a bit of turmoil because we had to arrange with the apartment complex to let them in to this empty apartment that had just been refurbished. As a tenant, we

were supposed to walk through, make a note of anything that’s damaged before we move in.

However, I couldn’t do that because we had to open the apartment to allow the movers to bring everything in and so we wouldn’t know afterward what was pre-existing damage, what may have been damaged by the movers. But in the end, we had given the driver a floor plan as to where to place the major furniture pieces and he made sure everything went where it needed to be. In fact, there was even a subcontractor involved to move a gun safe. So there was a lot of coordination that had to happen on the pickup end and the delivery end. Patrick, the driver and the person in charge on the day of the move, and the moving coordinator took care of that.

The apartment complex and the management here did what they could do. But they basically said, “You know, we're just going to open the apartment door and if they're done by the end of business day, great. If they're not, we're not going to come back to lock up the apartment.” So, it was kind of a worry because the door remains unlocked. That was the main thing that was a negative, but overall it was extremely positive. Every box we opened was meticulously wrapped. We found no damage of any sort on any of our goods. So the packing and all that was great. If we move again, we will definitely hire American Van Lines to do it.

I was nervous because I wasn’t getting any delivery time until the last minute. It took me until the day before the delivery to get a day, but then I didn’t get the time of day. I was also told the driver would be in touch with me, but he never did. In fact, he got lost and I had to drive around until we could find him. For some reason, his GPS didn’t take him to where it belonged. The gentleman who delivered my things was fine too, but I was told there would be two people. And since he was alone, it wasn't quite as easy. In the end though, everything worked perfectly fine and I'm overall pleased with the move. If somebody would ask me about American Van Lines, I would say they were just fine.

Don’t use this “mover”. Here’s the bottom line: they did a lousy job on my move, and tried to pay me off in exchange for keeping quiet—ie, not warning others like you. Now, in more detail: American Van Lines is actually a broker of moving services, which means they subcontract the actual move out to unknown entities over whom they have no quality control. It's the luck of the draw and I drew a nightmare.

The guy who came brought his 10 year old kid to "help" with the move. He slept an 1 1/2 hour nap in the middle of the move day, and constantly changed his mind about when during "the window" he'd show up to pack and unload. When he arrived at the move-in site at 8:30pm for a 7-8 hour estimated unload, I told him it was too late to start that night. I called the company and complained, and they agreed—and phoned him to say so, but had no control over him so he threatened to charge a $500 overnight fee to start the next day.  Faced with that, he started unloading and finished at 3:30am.

American Van Lines appears to have only excellent reviews online, but I learned why. Due to my botched job they offered to refund me $580 in fees, but the catch was that I was to sign away the right to post a review. Tempting, but I rejected their offer as I’d rather warn others. That explains the lack of negative reviews. Smarter shoppers than me will want to move with movers who are employed by the company and drive a company owned truck.

I found American Van Lines through the internet. They contacted me and stayed in communication. Their moving crew was very good. If I move again I will definitely consider going back to them. Others should chat with American Van Lines and see if they would do the same for them as they did for me.

The moving coordinators of American Van Lines were responsive and very helpful. They talked to us about how much product we were going to move and they anticipated how much room we needed in the truck, and they were accurate with that. They were also very good about getting back to us. First, they gave us a window of three days for the truck to be here. Then we got a couple of days before they told us the definite time and day of the truck's arrival, within a window of a couple of hours, and that was very good. The movers were very friendly and nice. They worked hard and they kept working so their productivity was good. I've mentioned American Van Lines to the people in the organization that I work for.

On the pickup date, American Van Lines was a day late and they didn't keep me in the loop so we had some issues about that. All the movers were very nice but the whole coordination was bad because we were due to fly out on that day. It was nerve-wracking to not know we're going to get picked up. We tried to reach the moving coordinator staff but American Van Lines is on the East Coast in Florida and we're on the West Coast in Nevada. So because of the time difference, we were able to reach them very late after a lot of calls and not very happy voicemails I’ve left them. Finally, one of the managers reached out to us and they assured us that they're going to make it happen even if they have to buy us another plane ticket.

We had to reschedule all that, but it would have been nice if they've done that beforehand. The manager did his best for the way it has offered me in writing compensation for the mismanagement. When the crew showed up, they did a good job of packing and did it quickly. They were late but they were all good. American Van Lines should double check their pick-up dates and see if the timelines are realistic. It’s not just an issue with them because I've seen it with others as well but they handled it well.

Communicative. Reliable. Professional. Friendly. I have been through 3 long haul moves in less than four years. If I ever move again, AVL will be the only moving company I work with. They partnered with me on every step in the process. My mover Tim, and his crew, treated me and my belongings like I was a member of their family. Overall, a very different experience than any other. Thank you AVL!!!

I’ve used American Van Lines' services in the past. This time, I had to move for work and my experience in speaking with their moving coordinators was good. They stayed in touch with me continually, making sure everything was going okay. My interaction with the moving crew was positive and I didn’t have any problems with them whatsoever. They were productive and always very helpful.

We were relocating and moving back from Virginia to Texas, and we did a web search trying to see who we could find. I talked to one person from American Van Lines when I was setting up initial conversations and using their app on my phone to walk around and show them the items in the house. He did a good estimate from walking around the house and explaining things as I went around. As the date came closer, I was contacted by another person who coordinated and kept me up to date on their arrival and how quick it would take them to drop my stuff off. That was pretty good as well, though he was a little difficult to reach from time to time. He didn't always pick up, and sometimes I ended up calling the main number and asking for them and somebody would go find them.

I watched and talked to the moving crew a lot. The helpers were different than the ones out here 'cause the driver told me that they didn't have a local office. The driver did well, but the helpers weren't quite as good. They seemed to complain about a lot of things and frankly, I didn't like them too much. But when they were dropping things off, it was completely different because the helpers were employees of American Van Lines and they were much friendlier and much more helpful.

We were moving six miles just to downsize and my wife was looking for good moving companies and getting recommendations from neighbors. American Van Lines was competitive price-wise, and their moving coordinator was very friendly, helpful and cheerful. Also, the moving crew was very good, professional and quick. They moved very quickly, less than the maximum time that we were suggested.
