I was moving locations which was about 20 miles and I researched three companies. American Van Lines was the most prompt in returning calls and in information follow-up. The crew were good guys and very forthcoming. There was one item broken during the move but they didn’t try to hide it. I had three different guys who apologized. Accidents happen and I'm in the process of getting estimates for that claim but that’s the only transaction I still have pending. Overall, I’m very satisfied. The experience was good and swift.

I decided to relocate to another area of North Carolina and got two box trucks from American Van Lines. The breadth of services they offered and the ability to get them in a timely fashion were the reasons I decided to work with them. Everyone that I worked with was really professional and very good to work with. The moving crew moved very quickly through everything.

I talked to about three different people and got prices. American Van Lines's prices were fair and they called back. In the process of me checking with other vendors, American Van Lines kept in touch, which made me feel like they were gonna do a good job. The rep kept checking back to make sure that I had all the information I needed. He was very helpful and professional.

We moved within our own town to a different home and it went smoothly. The movers did a great job and worked hard. We were very happy. We had some small issues, but nothing that I would bring to anybody’s attention. American Van Lines was very professional in our home and respectful of our things. It was a very positive experience. We would definitely use them again.

American Van Lines was the most responsive in answering my questions. I had a very short time period to make a decision and get the move done and they were pretty quick and easy to work with. Also, when I compared their cost to the other ones I quoted with, they were somewhere in the middle of the pack, which gave me the confidence that how they were quoting was the right way and it came right in line. I was generally happy with it.

I retired and wanted to move down to Georgia. I called the company that I used before, and they worked with American Van Lines. I felt good about the guy I was talking to on the phone. However, I was a little disappointed in the pricing. It started out with the price as $17,000. I told them that was not gonna work because almost everything was packed up and all it needed to do was be picked up and put into a trailer. I said just 25% of what we had needed to be packed, and the rest was already packed. Right then and there, he dropped the price to $10,000 without looking at any more stuff. He didn’t come down and look at anything else. It was all done over the phone, and I was a little miffed that they were able to drop it from 17,000 to 10,000 so quickly.

It would have been much nicer if they just gave me the best price and said it was the best they could do. I looked at three companies and the other two were 12, so I went to the 10,000 one. My relocation was 770 miles and we had a special request. We had to have somebody come in and take apart my pool table and put it back together. The coordinator was good and kept up on top of things. The crew worked good and hard as well. They were nice guys but they just slammed the stuff together and threw it in the truck, so we ended up with a few broken things. My walls and floors were scratched and it was a brand-new house too. It ticked me off a little, but they kept working. They got it loaded in one day like they said they would.

When it started getting late and the guys started getting tired, they just put the box in the garage no matter where it was designed to go in the house. They stopped moving it to the correct floors and that meant I had to move all that stuff from the garage to the basement, to the upper level and to the main floor. That ticked me off a little too. Still, the experience was straightforward.

I was moving from Vancouver, Washington to Las Vegas, Nevada and I wanted a professional company that’s been in business for a while. Warren from AVL was amazing. I decided on him because of his level of customer service. I was worried because I was moving during the beginning of the corona and he assured me they were going to be able to still work with me and it was not gonna limit them. Then, there was a moving coordinator and I could only talk to that person from that point on. She gave me less than eight hours to give her an update on how many boxes I have before they can give me some type of credit until the rest of the move. She wasn't helpful and her level of service wasn't up to par with the first and last person I dealt with. I paid $4,300 in advance but three days before the move, I felt like pulling my money out on her tail and going somewhere else.

But the movers were amazing. The father and son team came out there and they moved my stuff out no problem. They were fast. They were a day late, but they called me and they communicated openly with me on that. I didn’t have enough room on their truck and I had to rent a U-Haul. They helped me move and load the U-Haul up. Van Lines gave me 15 days to where it could arrive at my house and those guys got that stuff to my house in two days. They unloaded the whole truck. The screws to my bed were lost and those guys went out, found a hardware store, got the screws for my bed, and put my bed up. Also, I was missing one of my soundbars. But they got my stuff my here and they did an amazing job. Overall, I’m very pleased with American Van Lines.

Our deciding factor was mostly price. There were people who bid lower but they didn’t seem to know what they were doing. However, the rep at American Van Lines would promise to get back to us and then it was either a day later than she said it would be or it was at the very last second. In fact, on delivery morning, we were wondering if they were gonna show or not because we hadn’t heard from anybody. The guy showed and everything turned out okay. It was just not knowing.

The moving crew people from American Van Lines were all good guys. But we had to remind them to keep their masks and their gloves on. My wife reminded one young fellow, “You’re holding my granddaughter’s bed.” Another thing is that when we got toward the end of the day on the delivery day, those guys started bringing boxes in and parking them in the basement regardless of what floor they went to. I had no idea what they were doing. There were three guys working on three different places. So I found a lot of things that belonged on the second floor that were in the basement. It was another box for me to carry and I'm 70 years old. That’s why I hired somebody. However, there was minimal breakage. There was one thing got a scratch but that was out of hundreds of gazillions of things that they dragged in here.

American Van Lines was the first to pop up when I did a web search and they were the first that called. They gave me a price that I felt was reasonable so I went with them. The only thing was I talked to five different people and that was confusing. But every one of them was very helpful and very easy to work with. It was just too many people. The first three people were calling for the same purpose. The moving coordinator was changed after I made the first deposit then it changed one other time.

My move was from Washington State to Tennessee and that took five days. My sister was at the pickup. She was the one that I was moving. She said that the crew that came was very prompt and knocked it out rather quickly. It was pretty much the same when they came to my house. They were right on time and got it all put into my garage in about an hour.

American Van Lines seemed reputable and they were a big enough company that there was some feedback on them. The process of getting my business was very salesman-like. At first, I thought they were trying to get me to a number that I could afford because they were working with me, but it wasn't completely transparent and honest when it came down to what I was getting for my money. Then when I got switched to the next person, I was always calling them back and they'd say that they talked to the moving company and were just waiting to hear back from them. But I unbearably seemed to be waiting to hear 'cause I didn't know when they were gonna come.

Everything was open-ended on the date they would come. Then on the back-end, when the stuff was gonna get delivered, I didn't know how fast we needed to hurry up and be at the end location because that was open-ended as well. From point A to point B was a two-day journey. I needed a warning and I didn't know if I was gonna get a warning or not and I didn't feel like people were paying attention to us. Maybe they were, but I felt like I always had to call them. Then they'd say that they just spoke to the movers and they were supposed to let them know by whatever. I didn't wanna get caught out where I'm not at my final location because I don't know whether I'm gonna be given enough warning to get there or not.

I took the big-name company with a reputation that I was basing my decision on and got passed off to a little guy. I thought I was calling a major company. I wasn't expecting some third party guys coming out of Jersey and American Van Lines was just coordinating. But the third-party guys were nice and they seemed professional. It was still a good experience.

She's actually the one who really calmed me down and got me to go with these guys because I had never heard of the company and I just didn't trust movers. I had a friend whose moving company picked up all their stuff and he hadn't seen them anymore. I was afraid of that but the rep made me comfortable. She gave me enough information and documents that showed that American Van Lines was a legit company. She was very professional and real knowledgeable, based on the stuff that she showed me. Most people didn't know what they were talking about. I looked at five different company and ended up choosing American Van Lines also because of the price.

The initial contact was the most important thing. She followed up with me for a month and a half and that was the first thing. Then she worked out the turnaround rate of how I had to move where it could be done expediently and quickly. It was just the best process. I relocated about 215 miles away and it was split but it was fast. The moving crew was also pretty decent. I liked that it really didn't matter if an item was big or small. They kept track of it and documented it.

I liked how American Van Lines does everything over the phone instead of giving me a one-week appointment, coming over and taking a look at my stuff. I went with them and I was able to go through my house and tell them exactly what I had. Plus, their price was very competitive with other companies. They came in the second-lowest in terms of cost for my 1,100-mile move.

Their entire team was terrific. I can't say enough good things about how smooth my move was and how great everyone was. From start to finish, there was constant follow-up. Their reps would call and tell me what was gonna happen next. The crew who came was amazing and did the move without damaging anything other than one plastic hanger. Everything came as it was, very well-wrapped, well-transferred, and well-put back again. American Van Lines took care of my move for a job relocation and made it like it was nothing. I had a moving company previous to AVL that was supposed to have done the same job and they weren’t as thorough as AVL was. They didn’t put carpet down for them to walk across so as not to damage the floors. They didn't cover all the corners and all the door frames to keep them from damaging things. Update: The company did reach out to me and we came to a satisfactory resolution. While there were some bumps as with any move, it did feel like they tried their best to communicate and work to resolve any issues. It is important to note that this move is occurring during the COVID-19 virus reaching its peak in the area and has caused additional stress for both the movers and myself. I do appreciate them working to make sure my experience with them improved.

    Original Review: April 7, 2020

Seemed like AVL was well reviewed, but after the initial quote/deposit, everything went downhill. They told me a couple weeks before my move that they wouldn't make my moving date and had to use a "partner" company. They seemed to tout about not being a broker, but I don't know how that doesn't count as brokering. The mover came the very last day they could and were late. Only one person came and it took them pretty much 8 hrs to move all my stuff and stayed until midnight. It was exhausting. When loading, my move was about double the price we had initially agreed on.

They were really stingy on not working with me on the price. The mover told me they might be able to deliver about a week after pickup. Well, after he left, suddenly I get a call from AVL that my move would now be two weeks later and then 3 weeks. Suddenly, they even went outside of their delivery date window and continued to be stingy on price. They do a really good job covering themselves and trying to take as much money as possible from me. Would definitely avoid and go with someone else next time.

The moving coordinator came to the house and he seemed to get a grasp of what we were trying to do. The moving consultant did fine, too. But somewhere, AVL broke down the communication. We were in a two-floor, three-bedroom home and they sent two men who worked like dogs all day. They also had a smaller van. In comparison, when we moved into this home, there were four men. My impression was that they didn’t quite grasp the enormity of the job, and those men worked a ridiculous man hours to get that house packed up. I, however, have nothing but great things to say about those who did the physical work. They did a fantastic job and they were great.

I’ve traveled a lot with the military and on my own as a contractor. I went with American Van Lines specifically because there were supposed to be an all-in-one in-house moving provider, which turned out that they were not. And that’s a huge gripe of mine right now. These people had no respect for the agreement that we made. They didn’t have any respect for us when they showed up to do the job by bringing a bunch of local yokel drunks that fought and bitched and pissed and moaned among themselves, not to mention poorly packing everything. They had no regard for anything that said fragile and for our stuff when they unloaded it.

The schedule was a giant screw because I was in Afghanistan and I made it absolutely crystal clear about my schedule. They allowed me to come back for 10 days to take care of this, and they moved us up 4 days from Christmas after I verified that that was gonna be okay with everyone. They came back with some BS story about the weather in Colorado. But they've been in business for how long and they don’t know what the weather was gonna be like in Denver or in Colorado Springs in December? They got a problem.

They called me eight days in advance to tell me that they weren’t gonna be there until just a few days before I was scheduled to return to Afghanistan. We didn’t have much of a choice except to bag a crap they handed us. It was a bad experience and we keep getting lip service and BS. They asked me what they could do and I told them they could give me back half my money. It took me 41 hours to get home from Afghanistan. I literally had to go straight out to my shop and start packing. Me and my wife did it all night after me not sleeping all the way. I showed up on the 21st at 1 o’clock. They showed up at 9 o’clock in the morning. So we didn’t even get a chance to have a nap and we went straight in to monitoring them and listening to their fighting and bickering amongst themselves and just a rigmarole that they did. We had two days of that.

The driver that they pulled out of their hat from somewhere was not a bad guy. They got out of there so he could make it home on Christmas but they did not take the stuff as agreed directly to our storage unit here in Hudson, Florida. Instead, he went straight to wherever it was and left our stuff in the truck at his convenience or on Van Line’s convenience because he represents them.

It was such a haste and my wife and I had to cram what was left into another trailer and drive down for two days to get down here and wait for them to show up and then put it all in units. They worked their butts off but we have damage to stuff. But I am through arguing with them because if I can’t even get to a simple point as how they screwed up our schedule and how they inconvenienced us, how do I think I’m gonna fare bitching and bickering and fighting about this nick and not scuff on a piece of furniture that I had handmade in South Africa and shipped here? So here I am leaving again for Afghanistan and this crap has been going on for two months. I had three other movers on the line to do this and I regret not going with them. But I went with American Van Lines because it was gonna be their drivers, their trucks and their employees, but it wasn’t.

I'm not a happy customer of American Van Lines. Everything was like having a sales guy trying to sell a product to me for the lowest price but then when I get to the next step, the price would go up. When my things get delivered, the price went up again. The price increased three times. Moving through them was an annoying experience. The quote started off at 7,800 but then it ended up at 12,000. The weight of my stuff was more than they expected. I took a video of everything, explained and they estimated. Also, I asked them if they could deliver to my house and told them that on Google Maps, there is a 90-degree turn into another road. The mover said they would do that. But then, they couldn’t make that turn and the cost increased by another $2,000.

Household goods were not picked up on date as promised in FL. Delivery date also delayed in Michigan. The Coordinator Leslie did an outstanding job however, in communicating the numerous delays and changes for delivery. She advanced my concerns to her Supervisor when the Dispatch did not communicate with her regarding the delivery. The movers on both ends were outstanding.

    Original Review: March 1, 2020

I used American Van Lines for a long-distance move, from Florida to Michigan. On the Florida end, I realized that we were trying to do it in a rush because of the sale of the house. Fortunately, in the sale, we wrote in a contingency of amount of days, but those amount of days were over and Van Lines kept delaying the pickup date. When the movers came, they did a great job with their part. They were efficient, very professional and did their job. I said that I was told they couldn't do it on the weekend. They said that they were available. It was a "he said, she said."

We finally got out of there and they said that they could be up in Michigan on December 17th, which was three weeks after we moved. Then, it got delayed until January 3rd. I said, "How can you do this? We don't have furniture." They delivered on January 3rd and the goods arrived fine. But that was just way too late. We didn't have our stuff and were sleeping on blow-up mattresses.

I realize it was long distance and somebody even made the comment that it was kinda over Christmas and they couldn't get people to do it. Then they said the truck broke down and that they didn't have a truck. I said, "Rent a truck from somewhere." It was not even a full load. This was not a huge van line, it was kinda like one of those really big U-Haul truck things. The coordinator told me she kept trying to get ahold of the dispatcher for the delivery, and the dispatcher was not calling or not emailing her back. After a week and a half of that, she said that she was calling her supervisor to let them deal with it. American Van Lines needs to change how they do it.

I researched three or four other companies before selecting American Van Lines. I went with them because of their proximity. I moved my mother from Fayetteville, North Carolina to Wilmington, Delaware, about approximately 400 miles apart. The moving coordinator was very impersonal and rude. The person who helped get the quote for the move did not seem to be very technically-oriented, but our interaction was sufficient for the move. It was, maybe, 70% accurate.

They also promised to show up on Tuesday, but they didn’t end up coming out until Thursday. So, I had two extra days off of work waiting for them. I would like for them to show up on the day that they promised they would show up. Then, there was a moving crew at the point of origin, but there was no moving crew at the destination. The driver had to hire another driver to help him haul the stuff out of there, which was very inconvenient. While there was no damage incurred, it was overall a frustrating experience.

I was moving for work and American Van Lines was middle-of-the-road in costing. Early on, communication was very weak. It was a little difficult to get updates, but once the final dates were confirmed, it was pretty seamless. The coordinator was very responsive, friendly, persistent. The crew came in. They did their thing, packed up, and left. My kitchen was packed up. The way our things were handled was very good.

The move took about two and a half weeks. The delivery kept getting pushed back further and further out. I get that delays happen, but it just happened a lot. I was very thankful that they communicated with me. I would've preferred if it was closer to the date originally stated. When it came down to the final delivery window, there was a lot of back and forth. It wasn't the best experience but for the value, I thought it was very good. It was definitely one of the better moving experiences I had.

After doing a lot of research online and comparing just about everyone out there, I got down to about the top three and gave all of them the chance to contact me. However, only American Van Lines contacted me, so I went with them. They used video recording because they didn't have anyone in the area who could do a walkthrough. I was a little uncomfortable with that. There had to be a lot of corrections throughout. There were some items on the inventory that we didn't have and some items that weren’t on the inventory that we wanted to be moved. Although we got moved when we wanted to, it caused more confusion than was necessary.

There was also some initial confusion about who my point of contact was going to be and I ended up talking with three different people. Otherwise, it was a good experience, especially with the driver and packer. They were very good folks. They had an extra loader packing up and the same two guys unloaded and unpacked down here in Texas. They were timely, efficient, hardworking, and focused. They got all the checkmarks.

    Reviewed Feb. 22, 2020

The first rep I had with American Van Lines was very reassuring. Initially, my experience with them was competitive with other competitors. But then, it turned into a disaster. I asked him if there was anything I could do to make the move smooth. The rep told me that there was nothing I needed to do. He said that the movers were gonna do everything. I talked to him on a Friday the Tuesday before the move and asked about my clothes. I also had concerns about my furniture and my clothes getting wet as forecasters were calling for rain in Laurinburg. He said the movers would bring wardrobes and that they would pack my furniture up. The Monday before the move, I asked if I needed to take my clothes out of my dresser. He once again told me I didn't need to do anything and asked me how many boxes I needed.

The Tuesday when the movers showed up, they asked what was gonna move. I gave them a tour of my apartment downstairs and I told them what I had upstairs. They asked me two more times and I told them that everything had to go. They then called their boss who said that in order for them to move everything, it's gonna be another $600 as they're gonna pack. I told her that I'm not paying another $600 and she said that the only thing they would do would be to pack the big items. I told her that I would pack things myself. So, while they were moving the bigger stuff, I was moving all the other stuff downstairs in my living room, putting it in the middle so they can go and load it up on the truck. They gave me a box and I went upstairs and packed it. When I came down, they were gone.

I called them and asked where they were at. They said they were on their way to a weigh station. I told them that they left all of my stuff in the middle. I called the moving coordinator and explained the situation to him. All of a sudden he was telling me that I was supposed to pack. I told him that nowhere in our conversations did he say that was I supposed to pack. He told me that he was gonna have to go back and have his team listen to the tapes. We must've had over 20, 25 tapes as that was how many calls we had when he was trying to get the business and I was calling him to make sure everything was straight.

So, I got into my car and took off. I got to the weigh station a couple of minutes before they did. Before they unloaded, they called their boss. That time, my credit card didn't go through. There was zero balance on it though as I don't use it for times like that. I called the credit card company and they cleared it. On the boss's end though, she still couldn't get it. The driver was telling her that my credit card is okay and that I have money to cover the move. Instead, the boss told him not to move and not to take anything off the truck until I pay. So now, I get my other credit card and I do my debit card instead. She had trouble with her software, but she winds up getting it through. The movers then unloaded the truck. Meanwhile, all my other stuff is 100 miles away. I made five trips with my car.

I told my coordinator that I had some ongoing issues but then once I get my stuff unloaded, I would call him. I called him and he didn't pick the phone up. All other times before, he would call me. If he was on the phone when I call, he called me right back. This time, he didn't call me for two days. He didn't call me till I registered a complaint.

All of a sudden, while making a complaint, I see his name pop up in the background. He called me five times in a row and then he told me he was busy. He told me that he never told me that I didn't have to pay. I explained that he never mentioned that my things needed to be packed when the movers get to my pick up location. I told him that he asked how many boxes I needed. He said that his team went back and listened to the tapes and didn't hear that was said. There's no way in the world they listened to those tapes. Under those tapes, he would've clearly heard that the movers were gonna move everything. I'm dissatisfied with AVL.

American Van Lines' rep was very patient. However, I was very disappointed with their moving crew. I was moving into Florida and I was getting ready to go check for interim insurance as I didn’t have a job when I was coming down. It was a Thursday and the movers were supposed to come that Saturday. Someone called me asking if it would be okay if the movers come that day. I told that person "no" as I still had my bathroom, linen closet and bedroom to pack up. The person asked "what about Friday?" and I told that person that I can do Friday. But then, the moving crew called me that they were at my pickup point. They said that if they didn't come today, they wouldn't be able to come the Saturday of the move. I thought that was weird. I was also mad as I was getting ready to go talk to a guy about my insurance.

When the movers came, the guy wanted to charge me for boxes. I told him that they're not gonna charge me for boxes because they weren’t supposed to come 'til Saturday. On Friday, I had plenty of time to pack and get boxes. Also, I didn't get how they did stuff because the stuff the mover had, he stickered. The driver kept yelling at the guy helping him saying not to bring stuff out unless they were stickered. The movers had a certain amount of boxes that I had to stay under. That number was 50 boxes and I knew that I was only gonna have 35. Initially, I tried to get a hold of my boxes and pack as I was gonna see if I could get a cheaper rate. But then when the movers came, I haven't counted my boxes and didn't know how much stuff I had. I didn’t have time to really go through my stuff and pack up so I just rushed.

I saw that AVL's packers weren't the most careful. I had professional movers move me across town before and that time, they kept my stuff protected. With AVL's packers, they left a long lamp just sitting in the driveway on a windy day. The wind blew it over and there were just a lot of scratches on my furniture. Plus, when I moved in, the mover brought in a box and I told him it wasn't mine. I looked at it and inside was a fan. He asked me why I didn't just keep it. I told him that I didn't want anybody else's filthy fan. Other people should get somebody else instead of AVL.

From the get-go, Kevin was very responsive and was with me every step of the way. He would do a follow-up when he said he would. He very patiently answered all my questions about the move, the cost, what it was going to take and the number of boxes. He was not someone who just told me that this is how much it might cost. It was like, “Let me figure out a way to make it work for you.” So that was that point. I was also looking for someone to transport our cars, and Kevin mentioned that American Van Lines doesn’t do that but he would be happy to help me and recommend someone, and he went ahead and did that. I completely appreciated that.

The pricing was great. And then all my next contacts with my moving coordinator as well as the manager were all awesome. There was a number of different moving companies listed on the internet and from where I lived and where they were based, American Van Lines seemed to be the most logical choice, so I picked them. The only thing is that I did everything by telephone. They were down in Pompano Beach and I was in Melbourne. That’s probably 130 to 140 miles apart. And all my previous moves I've done myself. When they were asking me like what’s in this room, I really had a hard time describing my furniture and how much I had, so I underestimated how much I really owned. I don’t know if other moving companies do it, but it’d be nice if they were able to have one of their people come to our house and do a survey prior to. Other than that, they did what I asked them to do at a reasonable price. The men that packed and moved the stuff were very good workers.

The lady that was in charge called me frequently to make sure everything was going okay. Like we had dates set for when they would show up to get the stuff. And naturally, they’re doing other jobs too and so if something would delay them, she would update me. Initially, it was between two or three days then they narrowed it down and let me know the precise time when they’re in the area. Then when the men were working, she contacted me to see how things were going. It was fine. They left about 6 o’clock in the evening. It was an 800-mile ride and she called and let me know where they were at a given time so I could tell my wife what was going on.

They didn’t get in till late at night and they were kinda tired and wanting to rest, but my wife had her sister with her and she wasn’t going to have anybody the next day. So, the men went ahead and unloaded that truck that night and had it unloaded by 11:00 at night. They put stuff in the rooms where it belonged and put the bed together. The boxes that they packed, they had them marked so we can know what was in them. There were only two men and they didn’t slow down.

As the date drew near, they called and said there would be a one week delay and they would get back to me. No call back. Instead I get a call from another company that was sub contracted to do the move and they wanted to do it two days early from original date. No one contacted us for an updated goods list like they said they would.

The truck shows up that morning and didn’t have enough room to take everything while at the same time we were just being contacted for our updated goods list and having their quality assurance department having no clue that they were picking up on that day. Then we were told that would have to take half of our stuff and get the rest a week later and charging three times the initial quote because the weight weight of everything went from 5000 lbs to 15000 lbs. We refused the pick up and requested to get our deposit back - which was refused. Now we're going to have our attorney deal with them. So just beware of using them - they haven’t a clue about what they’re doing.

So, I thought of going with a national company that, according to what they advertised, had a good reputation even though it was a very local move. Also, I spoke to the gal named Toni and she made me feel confident in the company. She gave me her cell number as well as her office number and extension number. She was very helpful, easy to reach, and easy to give answers. I was very pleased. She was amazing and she really was the one that brought me on board.

The moving crew, however, was the part that I wasn’t real pleased with. The guy that headed it up was good and I felt confident in him up until more towards the end. I live alone and I don’t have much stuff. I already did a lot of packing myself with a couple of friends helping. But on actual moving day when they came to load me, there was one fella that was in my kitchen and he was packing my kitchen for over six hours. I couldn’t get with that. More so, I couldn’t figure out why there were so many boxes for my kitchen when my kitchen wasn’t that big. They packed on Wednesday and they delivered on Friday. ‘Cause they had to go back and forth, I had to pay two overnights which was a little heavy since it was $400 a night.

On Sunday, which was a couple of days later after they delivered, my son and grandkids came to help me. I was good with everything except the kitchen and so I had to ask them to unpack my kitchen. My son said, “Mom, look at this,” and there were boxes and papers. There was a huge amount of brown packing paper and my son was holding a spoon and said, “That’s what came out of all this big lot of paper I have on my hand.” Only one spoon. He’s in the insurance industry and he looked at me and said, “My god. No wonder you’ve got all these boxes.”

My kitchen was filled with crumpled up paper that the kids were unwrapping from the dishes, and one dish at a time was encased in a big amount of brown wrapping paper. That turned me off a lot and it undid all of the really good feelings I had. The move was a big, stressful thing. And it was not cheap as it was barely under $5,000 to move me within the same community. I moved from one part of the subdivision to just the other side. But it’s water under the bridge now. Still, I would not recommend the company ‘cause that wasn’t fair at all.

She was easy to answer questions and to talk to. The quote was exactly what I paid. The moving crew was fantastic. They broke two pieces, and they told us about it real quick. Other than that, we're really good. I've submitted the claim already. They have six months to reply to the claim. They try to do them within 90 days, so I decided if I don't hear something in about six months, then I'll start calling.

I went on the internet and American Van Lines was rated so highly and had so many great, positive reviews that I just called the number. I got somebody who was very helpful and I was delighted. I had a unique situation. I booked the move and I had to store my stuff for several months while waiting for my house to be ready. I moved from North Carolina to Colorado, and I had probably between a quarter and a half of a large truck.

Dennis, the person I worked with, was amazing. When I told people about that, they all had the same reaction. Usually, that’s not how moves go, but Dennis came and not just the guy who came over to estimate. When the driver got there himself, Dennis knew exactly what it would take. He was incredibly helpful because we had multiple storage units and they had to take portions of each storage unit and put it together into our lot. We were in North Carolina in May, and it was 95 to 98 degrees with 100% humidity. He worked like a trooper and stayed cheerful and awesome the several days it took us to do it. It was a fantastic experience with American Van Lines.

And then in moving to my new home in Raleigh, there were three guys. I had a couple of issues with damage to some things. I haven't heard from the company as far as getting any reimbursement. But the guys were hardworking and respectful. They did a good job. I moved two hours away, not very far. The rep I worked with at American Van Lines was good too. The only problem that we had was with her sending me paperwork. It wasn’t coming through and she had trouble with computers so that was frustrating. But I don’t know if that was on her part or if there was something wrong with the computer system. Otherwise, she was very helpful.

Someone in my office recommended American Van Lines and I dealt with their representative Brian, who was good. This was the fifth move I had in 15 years and it was by far, the worst move I have ever experienced in my life. I contracted with them to pack some of my things and it didn’t happen. They threw some of them into a box, not even wrapped, and there were two that just got hand carried. Their people are not trained and the packers don’t care. They did not understand that they were packing someone’s personal possessions.

I’ve moved from one state to another before and I’ve also moved from overseas. I’ve had some of my things shipped from overseas and they weren’t damaged. In this move, I had breakages and my cream couch is filthy because they wrapped it at the other end. And when they unwrapped it, they unwrapped it on the pavement outside. The stress of all of this made me ill and I would never recommend them to anyone. Too bad and so sad because they lost some business over it.

I contracted with AVL to an interstate move. They say that they are a Carrier when in fact they are a broker/agent. I say.this because a few day before my pickup date they said their truck broke down. They sent a mover who I had no idea who they were. They did not identify themselves right away and said they would be there 9-12. They showed up after 1:00 and did not finish till after 8:00pm with a small truck. AVL did not tell me that my property was going to be stored in a warehouse. THEY REFUSED TO GIVE ME THE ADDRESS LOCATION. I had to wait till after everything was loaded and I had to get very angry and I was screaming at them.

Finally I got the DOT# of the small trucking company that took my property. Looked it up and here is what I found: a filthy warehouse in Newark, NJ (Look it up) 51 Austin Street, Newark, NJ. I can't tell you how many times I called AVL frustrated, angry and ready to SUE them. They really get mad when you speak with them and say they are a broker and not a Carrier. I contracted with them to take my property directly from NJ to Utah and not be stored at a warehouse. Their refusal to give the location say they are not reputable. They are very deceptive and do not tell the whole truth when you ask them questions. I have filed several complaints. At the last minute they play the bait-and-switch tactic "truck broke down" with you and broker out you job to an unknown mover at the last minute. Going

The truck came and demanded $3000 extra or they won’t load…. Newsweek ranked the American Van Line as one of the best in terms of moving service. This contrasts significantly with our recent experience moving from Little Rock, AR to Auburn, AL (Dec. 2019, 500 miles). We requested 4 companies for estimates to move our belongings of a 2100-sq ft, 4-BR home. American Van Line gave an estimate of $5100 after seeing the video we recorded for each room. With the same video, two companies gave us an estimate of approximately $8000 and $9000, respectively. One company sent a local agent to our house for a survey, and came up with a $6000 “not-to-exceed binding” estimate.

With an additional $900, we were given the option of using an exclusive 26-ft truck for the move. The advantage of an exclusive truck is our belongings do not mix with those from other families. Further, the pickup and delivery time can be better estimated because they do not need to pick up/deliver other household belongings from other clients. I had no idea whether our stuff can fit into a 26-ft truck. They assured me that this was not a problem based on the video survey of our house. The price was settled at $6000 for an exclusive truck.

On the moving day, instead of a 26-ft truck, they sent us a large semitrailer (which was about twice as big as a 26-ft truck). The driver made a visual survey of our belongings and declared that there were more stuff than they expected. After a discussion with the office, they demanded $3000 more or they won’t start loading.

Kept it at the original $6000, we requested that they sent us a 26-ft truck and determined how much can be loaded, given their estimate that a truck like this would do the job. Since they did not have a truck nearby at that time, they went to U-Haul to get a 26-ft truck. After loading, more than half of our furniture were left behind, such as sofa (3 pieces), dining table set (1 table plus 6 chairs), several cabinets, several bookshelves, one 3-piece dresser set, lawn chairs (2 pieces), several floor lamps, etc. In a sense, they really helped us to down-size our household stuff effectively. Now we are left with a whole bunch of furniture that we need to deal with before we can put this house on the market for sale.

The questions: (1) Is it an honest mistake when they made an initial estimate of $5100 (using a semi-trailer) or $6000 (suggesting us using an exclusive 26-ft truck)? (2) Is this a routine practice of this company, i.e., they give you a low price estimate and intend to hit you with an additional charge at a time you have difficulty to say no?

Our experience has generated a lot of discussions on the social media. Some of my friends say it is an unethical practice, and they will never invest on a company like this. Others say the American Van Lines knows how to maximize their profit with this practice, so it is a good company to invest on. You make the judgement if you are an investor. If you are a customer looking for a moving company, think of my story before you sign a contract with the American Van Lines. They may have difficulty with the right estimate, or they may have a different motive when giving you a low estimate. Be careful... like it or not, they may get you hooked and then...

Additional notes: After a few phone calls with the company, they concluded that they did nothing wrong. Based on the weight/volume estimated by other companies (I provided the data to them without naming other companies), they said others would have done the same. I have no idea whether others would have done the same since the American Van Lines was the only company we chose.

The furniture we lost in this process is about $3000, and it would cost about this much to get the furniture replenished. American Van Lines is not interested in paying for our furniture loss. They did offer $100 for a U-Haul rental plus $100 as a courtesy compensation. Thus, we can rent a U-Haul truck to get our furniture locally. We rejected the offer.

I did not know that we need to take the consequence when they made a wrong estimate. Regardless, for the past many days, we have been shopping furniture at local furniture stores plus Ikea, Sam’s club, Tuesday Morning, TJ Maxx, Big Lots, etc. This is an activity I very much dislike. The whole process dealing with the American Van Lines gives us a very bad taste. Moving is a stressful event... I sincerely hope this does not happen to you. Be careful when dealing with the American Van Lines.

One month prior to potential dates for pick up had informed initial contact person, had out of town conference for first of the 2 days given but would be back by noon. Told not a problem that if this would indeed be the only day for pickup instead of the following day that pickup could be scheduled for after 12 pm since was a smaller load. Contract was then signed online. Didn’t want to commit to a contract if this was a problem. Four days prior to first potential pickup date received email from quality assurance manager requesting information regarding list- email was read 3 days prior to possible pickup and left a voice message for a call back.

Later same day received call from personal moving coordinator advising pickup was indeed for the first of two days given at 0800. I informed her was out of town for conference and not back until noon on that day as I had discussed with initial contact. Was informed there was no record of that information and if truck had to sit and wait would an additional charge until I arrived. Over the course of a weekend since this call came in on a Friday, I had to make several changes on conference so I could be back into town for pickup by 0800. Day of pickup ready and waiting....it’s after 10am and no truck yet. Shortly after, I place call to coordinator who advises she just found out truck would be late! It’s still 3 hours away!

Truck finally arrives at 1230pm- half hour after what I originally said I would be back. Loaders inform me they were told to arrive at 1:30 pm which to them they were on time. American Van Lines driver informs me he was not given a time, only date! I researched extensively to avoid problems like this but still happened. Now for delivery- was given 2-10 day timeframe due to holidays. On day 2, I receive a call that truck is 2 hrs away from being delivered oh and not everything is arriving because truck was pulled over and found to be overweight. The coordinated does not know what state belongings are in as this was a 900+ mile move nor does she know what was removed. No, most definitely absolutely would not recommend.

Wish I was allowed to give zero stars! This company will never touch my belongings or be allowed in my home again nor of friends or colleagues if I can help it. Such a huge regret and endless pain/inconvenience to deal with all the aftermath of a Corporate relocation; time I'll never get back. There is damage to over 80 items they packed and hauled from legs of patio furniture pushed through the table top, broken legs and holes in new leather couch, broken and bent back to wingback chair, leg of my son's antique heirloom chair snapped in half, dented/broken smoker/BBQ, tool chest damaged, big screen 3DTV (sounds like a box of Legos inside not to mention the large spots all over the screen), broken appliances, smashed monitors, neon bar light was only wrapped in paper and tossed in the truck (really folks?), chipped and dented furniture just to name a FEW of the items which total over $36,000 to replace.

(Burned out wasting weeks of my life having to research pricing of all the replacements for an insurance claim). Some items have been moved 15 times in my life with ZERO problems and they call themselves "professionals"?!? The icing on the cake is I bought my first brand new home and looked like crap after they left to which it still does months later! They damaged walls in almost every room in the house putting holes, MANY scuffs and ink from wet and dirty boxes, heck they even got soot on the ceiling! They don't want to pay for proper repair, claiming they only have to touch up spots they screwed up because it's thousands less from their cheap "painter" with zero credibility. If anyone's ever painted their walls, touch ups look like garbage, you need to paint the entire wall. Nothing like ruining the feeling and excitement I should have had with buying a sparkling new home.

I should have just told my work to wait while I pack and take all my belongs across country myself again and wouldn't have to deal with the time I'll have to waste re-buying items I owned and extreme inconvenience of "repairmen" coming and going to fix other belongings. This experience ranks right up there with the BS you go through with a divorce! I was promised in the beginning they will do whatever it takes to make this right, hogwash when they backpedal, their word obviously means nothing and this will go down as one of the worst experiences I've ever gone through in my life.

    Original Review: Dec. 6, 2019

After doing research and reviewing multiple quotes, we signed a contract with American Van Lines in early November to move us from Minneapolis to Seattle on Dec 2, 3, or 4. We paid a 50% deposit, about $3500. We were in regular communication with AVL and did everything they asked of us, including providing an updated detailed inventory to them the day after Thanksgiving, three days before the first day of the pickup window. They sent an updated estimate that day, which I promptly signed and returned. They repeated that they would tell us the pickup date the following day, Saturday Nov 30. Saturday afternoon came and no call. I called them repeatedly with no answer, left voice mail with my contact, sent emails, and tried to reach them by Twitter.

On Sunday Dec 1, still no communication, but they could come the next day so I put up NO PARKING signs on my street and we completed our packing and preparations. On Monday morning, the first day of the three day pick up window, I called them first thing. They informed me then, ALREADY IN THE PICKUP WINDOW, that they had not been able to schedule a truck yet but were "working on it" and "would get back to me later that day." They did not call back. I called them that afternoon and was told there still was not a truck but that they were working on it, and to call back Tuesday morning. They asked if we had any flexibility in our move date and, by totally reworking our planned travel schedule, we were able to be available Thursday's. They said they'd keep working on it.

On Tuesday morning when I called, no truck. Did we have EVEN MORE flexibility? If we really stretched, I replied, we could do Friday morning. On Tuesday afternoon, no truck available. On Wednesday, they finally told me they could not schedule a truck and would give us a refund. I spoke with the manager, Sam, who said the soonest they could move us was the second week of January, FOUR WEEKS LATER. Meanwhile, my job begins in Seattle on Monday Dec 9 and my kids need to start school. We can't sit around our completely packed house waiting for movers who will never come, but that's what we did for three days while they strung us along.

I am now in Seattle. I have no idea when or how our stuff is getting moved. I am beyond furious. Moving company highly rated by Consumer Reports and other review sites, large business that absolutely should be able to find a truck, supposed to have good customer service and logistics. We are going to be out thousands of dollars for a flight back to supervise the move, whenever it happens, and for furniture/kitchen stuff/clothes to replace, temporarily, what is still sitting in MN. To say nothing of the security risk of having all our stuff in an unoccupied house while we straighten this mess out two weeks before Christmas.

American Van Lines (AVL) from Pompano Beach, Florida did my move from Virginia to Georgia. I had requested quotes from quite a few movers. AVL got me a quote based on weight that helped me plan my items better. It also gave me greater control, even though it was a non-binding quote.

    1) The move was done by AVL team wearing AVL shirts (easy to do) and also driving an AVL truck.
    2) The crew of William, Tony and Chris from Greensboro were professional, courteous, good demeanor and positive. They initially thought that the weight was much higher causing some hiccups. However after a more detailed walk through, they agreed to my weight estimation. We still had to sign an higher estimate quote, but came under the original weight.

    3) I reached out to the Vice President for flexibility on delivery and they responded to it positively. I also got a call from AVL indicating that they were looking into it.

Once I fixed on AVL, I let other movers know about my decision. Quite a few of them told me that AVL is the worst of the worse, really terrible broker and not deliver. None of this came out true in my move. One of the main reasons for selecting AVL was that they are responsive on consumer affairs. The sales rep informed me that they do thousands of move, and it's natural not everything goes perfect. When my hiccup occurred, the sales rep did inform me that he's locked out of the file. Overall, my move went well due to the good crew as well as the responsive nature of the AVL management.

Some of the crew took a nap after lunch. We begged for them to please be more careful after seeing what they were doing. They just smiled and said, "Sure we will." Visits to the moving truck, found furniture with no pads being pushed across truck floor and wedged between other furniture, has legs broken off, tables and chairs with duct tape wrapped around them. Seemed like you would have to be doing this on purpose to cause that much damage.

Some crew members seemed angry and mad about the others they were working with. One guy walked off the job swearing, saying that he was suppose to be the boss. They stopped the move at first and said they wanted more money than what office stated the charge would be. After 2 hours I had to call Florida to get the job started again. We got one truck when we paid for 2, we got half a crew that we paid for, half of that crew left after 2 hours and took them extra days to move us and we paid extra because we had no choice.

The management lied, and did not help us, once they got our payment, management would not return any calls. You'll really regret using this company and these people. We need all new furniture, but we can't afford to do that. Has Salvation Army say that damage was so bad they would not take it as donation. These other good reviews have to be false. Some other reviews sound like some other company that we never dealt with.

After getting 6 moving quotes, I chose American Van Lines. I was very happy with my decision. My move was long distance (833 miles), so I was very anxious about how it would go. The company called me almost every day before my move to make sure that things would go smoothly. I had a personal representative handling my move and she called daily keeping me updated on when my movers would arrive to pick up my furniture etc. and then when I to to my new home, she called daily to let me know when the movers would deliver my furniture.

The movers themselves even called me to let me know where they were and when they would pick up and deliver! I had to have an antique mirror crated and uncrated by a separate company and American Van Lines also arranged that. The movers were professional and fast and nothing was damaged. They wrapped my furniture and were super careful with my items. I would definitely recommend American Van Lines and I would use them again for my next move. Special thanks to Dori, Elena and Dan and his wife. You all did an awesome job!

The only hiccup we had was that the drivers got tied up at the previous stop so they didn't get to us until 12 hours after they were supposed to, which put a little crunch on us at the end. The movers were very careful though. They wrapped every piece of furniture and I didn't have any issues at all with any furniture being damaged. American Van Lines's crew was good. They got right on the job and worked hard throughout the day. They had boxes, but they didn't have wrapping paper. They had sent a representative to eyeball the house, how much china we had, how much stuff needed to be wrapped in the kitchen and how big it was. But if he had enough paper and boxes, we wouldn’t have run out of room on the moving truck.

Also, they didn't send a representative out to physically look at the rooms and the furniture in the house. We ended up not having enough room on the truck for our furniture and had to leave some stuff behind. My husband had a truck and he had to go get it. He also ran out of paper a whole bunch of times and had to go over to Lowe’s to get that. American Van Lines reimbursed us eventually though. The move from Kentucky to North Carolina took two days and overall, working with them was a fine experience.

I do not recommend American Van Lines. After contacting them, I was given a "binding estimate". The estimate was not based on a physical inventory, but rather done over the phone. The estimator forgot to add dishes to the kitchen inventory and we later added some items to the inventory expecting a small increase in our cost. We paid approx. $1200 more than the "binding estimate". To make matters worse, American subs this move out and the third party demanded cash payment on two different phone calls. This was not American Van Lines policy. Then we were solicited on both the pickup and the delivery end for "tips". When I did not pay a tip after the delivery was made, I found trash left in my front yard. Was I dealing with the "underworld" of trucking van lines? I felt disappointed and cheated after the move.

American Van Lines' consultant kept in contact with me no more than they absolutely had to. Moreover, I was lied to a bit on the deal. They didn't tell me about the shuttles that were gonna be necessary. Even though they knew the addresses back and forth, they didn't tell me until the end when I was already committed. It was an extra $1,000. Moreover, they left a couple of things behind. It wasn't really necessarily their fault though. It wasn't on their list of the items to carry. The moving crew was nice in the beginning, but in the end, they were sloppy. They had to bring my things to a storage area and most of my stuff came through okay. But their attention to detail could be improved and they could have a little more care about other people's possessions.

It was my first time using a moving van company and the next time I hire a one, I wanna know exactly what's gonna happen, what kind of vehicle is gonna be used. I also wanna make sure that there's no extra trucking involved. I was told that my stuff was moved from one truck to be picked up into another van and from that van into another truck so my stuff was moved four times. I wouldn't use American Van Lines again.

Everything went okay with American Van Lines. It seemed there was a lack of packing experience on the young guys, but they were very gracious and very cordial. We had some bumps and bruises, but all in all, the experience was fine - the effort, coordination and how efficient the effort was. There were some things about how to move a couch and putting it down on the ground outside and putting it down in the truck outside without any protection. There was a wooden furniture that had nicks and bruises on the edges, corners, etc. And part of the issue was a lack of experience.

Now, the guy who managed the whole thing was good. He knew enough about what he was doing, but you couldn’t overcome the fact that he didn’t have oversight over everything because there was furniture moving around without him being around to be able to manage that. And that was an issue for some of the younger guys. On the other hand, the coordinator was excellent. However, she left us early. I thought everything was gonna happen as expected. Unfortunately, she had a disc problem in her back, she had to get operated on. But things worked out at that point. The job was good. And so, we’re happy.

I got calls from different places but with them, you were the one fighting for the price and they would only give you a van that you’d have to share with the others or else there would be very much higher price. But with American Van Lines, they were more easy to work with. They really tried to help me out and I got the price that I wanted. And they were reasonable, I had my own van. And then, right there, I was getting bids from other companies, so we called back and forth a couple of times and it was easy to get in touch with him. Then, the crew that came out were good guys. We were around each other all day and they explained what they were doing. It took longer than I thought, but it was still within the estimated window. What took longer was they took a lot of care making sure nothing was damaged. There was a desk that is made out of particle board, which we talked about beforehand, and they told me, “These things can be very difficult to move,” and all the risks that are associated with them. In the end, the quote was close to the final cost. So, all was good.

Our timeline was blown out because of the other situation that I was dealing with and they were able to fit the move into the timeline. The rate was probably a little on the high side of things but it was in the neighborhood of a lot of the other ones, and I didn't have time to mess around with it. The moving crew was fabulous. They were really organized and the communication was good. They would text me along the way to let me know, 'cause it was a cross-state move and that was stressful. Their customer rep was exceptional. The in-between phase was a little rough. I like the very beginning and the end of the move.

An area that can be improved upon will be the claims processing. That was kinda painful and I don't think that that was unique to them. I've done a lot of move before and this was pretty standard. Somebody got something of mine and I got something of theirs but I didn't know where to turn it into. If there was just a site that you can go to and then people can post on there and say, "Hey, I got your stuff." then that way, you can get the stuff to them.

I have to let other people do stuff now because physically, I just can’t do it anymore. I’m a veteran and I suffer from some issues dealing with anxiety. This was my first time relying on someone else to help me with my move.

I had to get moved that day because I had already received notice from my office people that I had to move out that day.

He said he could help out financially because he knew that there was a lot of stress in dealing with that. I put some names in and somehow ran across American Van Lines while searching the internet. I expected to have to go through two or four calls before anybody would even accept it. I explained my situation and they were able to get there that same day. They saved me so much grief because I was already spinning out and everything. I was very happy. Money-wise, I was trying to keep them within two hours, but we could not do it because of the number of big furniture. I had an awesome experience considering it was such a terrible day that day.

Eventually, I talked to American Van Lines and they provided me a quote. The guy who gave me the quote referred me to a guy on American Van Lines' operations team and we planned the move on the spot in front of the other movers. That was a person that understood my predicament and worked out an instant plan in 20 minutes. He helped me out of an incredible jam. Three days later my stuff was picked up very easily with a great team and it was on its way to Utah.

The delivery went super smoothly. The crew was funny and friendly. The guys that showed up in North Carolina were doing the happy dance when they saw that everything was already staged in the garage and that they didn't have to walk up any stairs. They got 537 cubic feet of stuff out of my place. The move was delayed by a couple of days versus our original schedule but that wasn't a big deal. Also, there was small damage to a bike seat which was ripped. I've been reimbursed for it and everything was taken care of. I was thrilled with the way American Van Lines did my move.

I knew I probably paid a little bit more because of the timing being so close. But when people are moving, they're held over a barrel. That's why the other company thought they could take advantage of me because people usually have places to go, have flights to catch, or have closings to go to. I wasn't gonna play that game. American Van Lines guys bailed me out. I have a broken neck so I couldn't help their guys out. The guys on both ends were really helpful and they were able to do stuff that I would have helped them to do. I had a really good experience with this company and I would recommend them to anybody.

It took them 2 days to get my stuff to my new home and we didn’t want them any faster than that because we were in North Carolina and we just followed them down. It was perfect and I would recommend American Van Lines.

American Van Lines had the best pricing and the best ratings. They were very communicative with a lot of emails and phone calls. They helped us with the window a lot too. They kept saying that we have to move within a three-day window, and we were moving multiple states, so, they really worked with our schedule to pinpoint down a specific day and time without saying, “I’ll be here within Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.” We really needed a specific date. So, they were great with that. My husband was home with them when they did the delivery, and nothing was broken, so they were great. And they were fast.

We went over the final figures, and they even showed me how to get to my new apartment in Greensboro because I never went there before. So they guided me there. They were fabulous. I recommend them 100%. It was my first time using a company because I’ve always used friends. Now, I would do it again, and again, and again. American Van Lines is divine. The people at American Van Lines have reached out to us regarding our concerns about some damage to our items. They've offered to compensate us for that and we feel the offer is fair. Based on the way they've handles our concerns, we'd be happy to give them a 5-star rating. And we'd be happy to use their services again in the future.

    Original Review: Sept. 8, 2019

In the area of courtesy and working with them, I would rate American Van Lines very highly. In the area of damage to our stuff, I just took picture after picture after picture of damage. We can't replace so many things we own. We just have to live with dings all over the place and some stuff will have to be replaced. I have a really nice little leather ottoman with a lid that I've had for about five years. It was in perfect condition and now, it has a slit in the leather of about an inch long. I'm sitting here in my office at the moment looking across at this bookcase. It's got an area of about 14 inches. It's got various dings and scratches on the front of it. About six years ago, we moved from Los Angeles to Denver and we also had a lot of stuff. Nothing was damaged. I was expecting that, yes, something happens and you gotta suck it up, but I was shocked of how much of our stuff was damaged.

It was a little bit challenging for me with the moving coordinator itself. It was tough at times. She called and let us know what was going on the very, very last minute. It was hard to get in contact with her as well. And then, they were late like a day, so we had to leave a day late than we were supposed to. My original main driver had a family emergency, so I understand that. But the other drivers that was assigned to us got there around 2:00 the day that we were supposed to move. Then they told me that they would do everything for a day and move tomorrow. I told them absolutely not.

I'm trying to sell my house, and I've got to get it packed out, get everything out of the house, so I can get the other stuff that I already had planned. So, they put everything out, and we've worked it out. But the two gentlemen that moved us were awesome. They were friendly, and I helped them a little bit as far as how to get them in the truck. It was good. It was just the coordinator that was kinda hard to get through. But she was nice on the phone. Overall, I was very pleased with the move itself, and I would recommend.

I went to American Van Lines because they appear on ConsumerAffairs' website, and it is very misleading to have them on a website that is certified by ConsumerAffairs. They are a shoddy shop. They are outsourcing people who are not professionals. They are using people that I felt that my family and I were in harm's way. The people that they're using in Charlotte were not professionals. All of them. I got scared, and I would not associate with them. We paid a lot of money for full packaging and we were supposed to go on Friday. They didn't come on Friday. I told them that they had to come. They had priced me for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I told them that we have a closing on Monday. They were supposed to send the crew of six people, but they only sent about three people. They came on Saturday instead of coming on Friday. I told them that it got to be done and completed by Monday, but we couldn't close because of that.

They did not complete packing, so they didn't wrap stuff. They were in such a hurry. They did not deliver on the day, so we had to get an extra accommodation. They compensated us for that also, but they use people that were not American Van Lines. They use local people. It was really an overall horrible experience. I have credits being offered by them acknowledging the damaged products. It was horrendous. The amount of damages that they're giving is not sufficient, so it's an ongoing process. They should not be a national carrier nor should they be on ConsumerAffairs' website. All they have is a van and there's a truck driver. That is it.

My experience with American Van Lines did not go well. Their people came and the first thing they did was that they got a shuttle and chose a location for pick up when they’re supposed to bring an 18-wheeler. Then they tried to deliver to my house in Florida on an 18-wheeler when it should’ve been a shuttle. I was still there. That was on a Monday. Tuesday, after I called them, they told me they wouldn’t be there until Wednesday. When I called them Wednesday, they couldn’t come until Thursday. When I called them on Thursday, they couldn’t come until Friday. I told them they had to be at my house before 8 o’clock Friday night. “We have everything moved in. No problem,” they said. They came Saturday morning. That was depressing. I wasted a whole week. I missed two plane flights out, and I still haven’t been reimbursed for the second plane flight worth $150 that I’m still waiting for.

Hired AVL moving from California to Washington. 1st the packers turn out to be Contracted from a company named Boost NY, Ukrainian. They flew in to Ontario, California. Rental car. No Moving Truck, and purchase supplies from local Hardware Store. 8 hours late. It was 8 pm. They start packing by 1 am, they said they would finish and everything would be moved. Which they did. This was Verified by AVL. Hence 3 week later arrangements was made for delivery to our new location, 4 1/2 days Late AVL calls & verifies Boost will Delivering in 1 hr. We met a Guy named Ike (Ukrainian). Ike never reviewed his delivery orders to bring a smaller truck to transfer moving goods. When he realized this he was nasty and left for 6 hours, before he came back. He had 1 skinny helper to unload our belongings.

When he unloaded the boxes he was hostile and throwing them out of his truck to the smaller truck. When he delivered them to my front door he threw my Furniture out on a gravel driveway and all the boxes. He threw out my 400 lbs Safe upsides, to right side and repeating over and over. Needless to say all glassware was broken, every piece of furniture was destroyed or broken. AVL apologized, tried to give us $1,000. And sign a no complaint agreement. Which we refuse. The insurance adjuster came out to give us $1400. We laughed. What a joke. The ironic thing when we start unpacking. We were missing personal items, cameras, bike rack, things we already packed, that Boost repacked and removed. Things were not in ours boxes, but the ones Boost purchase and tried to over charge us $1600. More than what we already paid... Don’t ever use American Van Lines Or Boost!! Run if you met Ike.

I called American Van Lines and talked to Kevin and he was very helpful, and then he called back. He was pretty professional and effective. He tried, so it was pretty helpful and it was a very smooth conversation. And then we set up everything. After that, another lady contacted me and she was very effective too. She told me what was going on. It was a little bit rushed because she didn't know exactly when the mover would arrive, but I understand that. In the end, it was all resolved.

I also talked to another lady named Jennifer. She renegotiated about the price, because once you're getting to the moving day, you add some things. So she came up with the new price, which I was okay with. It was all reasonable. And then the mover was very nice, and they were very great people. They called me, and we kinda became friends. They helped me load the car. It was smooth.

In the contract, the last delivery day was 17, and I have to wait about three weeks, but I understand because it was a busy season for them. So, they delivered on 18, but I'm okay with it. It was not a big deal, but I was hoping they could arrive a little bit early. When they came, it was the same driver, so we got along pretty well. And they helped us to set up everything. It was pretty good. The only complaint that I have is that one of my small tools in my tool box is gone. But that's okay. It's not too expensive. And then they didn't deliver one of the decoration kind of thing, like a little vault. But that's also okay. Overall, I'm happy, but American Van Lines should put more cameras.

I entered into the contract #*** American Van Lines on May 24 2019 for an interstate move. The experience starts with the agent Awa* who wanted to sign the contract along with the payment as fast as possible giving the reason that if I do not sign the contract fast I might miss the date slots for shipping. The scheduled window for pickup date between June 27 - 29th, 2019 and the delivery date on or before July 25, 2019. While there was week remaining for the pickup, the agent called me and said that the trailer which was supposed to pick up has some issue with it and they will have to tie-up with some third party to pick up the items. The driver arrived on Friday June 28th, 2019 and picked up the items. When he finished loading the items in the truck, he started demanding 10% tips. The driver was adamant and rude to talk with.

Later in the first of week of July the agent Rebec* gave me tentative delivery dates - 1) Delivery was scheduled between 8th July until 12th July, 2019. 2) Delivery was re-scheduled between 15th July and 18th July, 2019 and 3) Deliver was again re-scheduled between 21st July and 22nd July, 2019 and nothing was shipped. Later the agent Rebec* called me saying the that the delivery will happen on July 25, 2019, but said your contract amount was changed due to some additional charges reported by the driver and I said there was nothing additional which was provided but she still went ahead and abruptly revised the contract price by adding the shuttle service and the packing material.

I reached out to Sam* their supervisor, but in fact he said I have to prove that the shuttle service wasn't required since the premises was able to accommodate the trailer and the second thing the driver submitted bills on my behalf by adding charges for additional services which I never asked for. To remove the charges I had to reach out to the property where they confirmed that the property allowed trucks or trailers irrespective of the shape and size. The additional packing was signed by the Driver by impersonating my signature as if I had signed the requirement for materials used and claiming the cost. I was promised that the delivery happening by July 29, 2019, but again they had some issues with the delivery dates and the reasons given was Act of Nature and God.

They revised the date to August 1st, but when they delivered it was somebody else's items shipped to us. They had to rework on dates. The delivery was done on August 7, 2019 at night around 10:30 pm PT after all distress, frustration and pain while financially taking a loss including work off which happened twice in two weeks. The worst part was there were several missing items and damaged items. There were in total 62 items, but they have delivered 59 items. They lost my Samsonite Samsung 30 inches Black polycarbonate luggage bag which had all her new pair of clothes which were more than 20+ set, perfumes, purses, important government documents, cosmetic kit, sweaters, and men's clothes. The overall estimated loss including the bag is around $3000.

The other 2 boxes has electronic items such gaming console and expensive speakers which is around $2000. It is unfortunate that their claim policy states the it will take 120 days for their resolution. They do not have delivery commitment that's for sure but they can't even deliver all the items in totality. I am 100% sure they do not have the capability of them claiming as they are into this business. It is unfortunate and one of the worst experiences that I have engaged with them. I took their services which have made my life lot distressed, miserable and frustrating. They also keep pushing on the legal and contract languages.

I have paid of their entire payments. But they haven’t confirmed on their process to resolve this in time. I have sent them several emails and Claim forms but they haven't come back on any confirmed resolution, except for mentioning that they have received the Claim forms and will take 120 days to resolve. A couple of weeks back I received call from their Sales manager who wanted to settle by offering an unacceptable refund amount of 6% of the claimed value. I appeal and request all of you to stay away from American Van Lines as they would Delay, Damage and Lose the items.

They are doing everything they can to find my father's table, and has severed ties with the company they had been using that lost the table. I appreciate them looking into this matter so thoroughly.

    Original Review: Aug. 24, 2019

This is not just the worst moving company I’ve ever worked with, but one of the worst overall companies I’ve had the experience of hiring. From the late pick-up and rude/slow movers, to the damage and loss of our items upon delivery, this company has been nothing but a disappointment. Many of our items were delivered scratched, damaged and dirty. The worst overall however was the loss of a coffee table that my late father had hand-built in high school. This table had moved across the country with other companies twice and I never had an issue, so I never imagined I had to worry about losing it. My dad died last year and this was one of the few items I had left of him. When I called Sam, our contact at American Van Lines, he never called back (left 2 voicemails).

Finally I called and talked to someone who was kind and seemed to want to help. I received a couple of follow up emails that said it was being looked into, but after two weeks still had no update. Finally, after my fourth follow up, my email was forwarded back to Sam who said he has looped in the claims department. The fact that the claims department had not already been notified was heartbreaking. This piece of my father is gone and this company has not shown a bit of urgency, remorse or follow up about the fact that they lost it.

I strongly recommend you go with another company. This one had a lower quote which is why we chose them, and I will regret that choice for many years. These people are manipulative, careless, rude, and unprofessional. There are also many negative reviews that have been deleted because after they “resolve” an issue they send you a bogus contract that says if you want any compensation for their mistake that you have to remove the negative Yelp review. I made that mistake once and won’t again. I don’t want anyone else to go through what I have during such a stressful and transitional time. Avoid American Van Lines at all cost.

Our problem with the help of Sam who is Customer Service Manager was resolved and we are happy that our belongings finally arrived. Actually, the issue was caused by a subcontractor, so we are happy with American Van Lines and their service

    Original Review: Aug. 21, 2019

I contacted few months back the American Van Lines regarding move from Providence, RI to Carmichael, CA. The initial contact with Harold ** was excellent and we discussed in details all my needs and concerns and he assured me that they are very experienced movers specializing in piano moving, as our move included my wife's baby grand piano which is needed for her to perform her job as a church musician and teacher. Our house was for sale and we agreed that I will let them know in advance the exact date of the closing so we can schedule the pick up.

They scheduled the pick up window between July 26 and July 28 and they executed the date perfectly on 26th. But, in contrary to our verbal agreement that the pick up will be done by their truck, they called me three days before the pick up date and told me that they do not have any trucks available in our area and they will send a subcontractor. That was the first problem at the pick up. The second problem was that the subcontractor didn't even know that they should move a baby grand piano and arrived without piano board which is mandatory to move instrument safely. There were only two movers and they did an excellent job wrapping furniture (everything else I packed myself).

The third problem was that they had to use a shuttle rental truck supposedly due to the fact that 18 wheeler couldn't get to our street. I understood that, but they immediately added $700 to the original estimate. So, after already paying $3000 deposit I also gave movers at the pick up $2000 and there was a balance of another $2000 due at delivery. The original estimate was $5000 and now it went up to $7000. I was fine with that and did not argue or complained, as I was prepared to that. The subcontractor who picked up our belongings on July 26 told me that we will receive our load in TEN days. Today is already 26th day from the pick up, but we not only did not have our belongings, but they don't even respond to our requests to give us a date.

Two weeks after the pick up I called our personal move coordinator named Leslee with my concern. She told me that their contractor will make the delivery between August 10 and August 12. It was a lie, as when I called her around August 14th she told me that our belongings are still in the warehouse in New York and the subcontractor is planning to start the move from there around August 19 to 21. Today is August 21 and we still haven't heard from them. After I expressed my dissatisfaction to Leslee I was contacted by her superior Sam, who told me that he is taking over our move and will personally control the process. He promised me to call me on Friday, August 16, which he did and told me that he will call me back on Monday the 19th. NO CALL ON 19.

On Tuesday the 20th I left TWO messages - one for Sam and one for Leslee, but nobody responded. At that point I left a one star review on YELP, and literally 90 SECONDS after that I received a call from Sam, who expressed his dissatisfaction with my review. I explained to him ONE MORE TIME that we live already for almost a month in California either in friends home or in the hotel. We had to buy a bed and a mattress which we do not need to be able to sleep in our empty apartment which we are paying rent for.

My wife is a piano teacher and she MUST start teaching in a few days, but she would be unable to do so without the piano and will lose her wages. We are unable to register our vehicles, take care of health insurance as all our documents are still in the load. There are also many other inconveniences and complications in addition to enormous stress which affects us both dramatically. I am 66 years old cancer survivor with heart condition, and I can not continue to live under this conditions.

The person giving me the quote started off bad mouthing the competition and saying they hire out their movers and all the one American uses are their own - FALSE!! They are contract mover too from other companies. After the original contact for setting up the transport/packing it was a nightmare getting a hold of anyone to talk to.

I called three different people and left several VMs with no response. I called to talk to a supervisor and the first time was put through to the same person I left three previous VMs for, called back and never spoke with a supervisor but was put through to one of the people I had left two VMs for and was told by that person the other person would call me back but NEVER DID! When the movers were supposed to be at my house there is a three hour window of time they need to show up in, they didn't. 15 mins before the end of the three hours they called and said it would be another hour till they got there. It took the deliverers twice as much time to bring the boxes/furniture into the house as it did to pack and load, and when reassembling my furniture they did a half ** job and I had to tighten everything before I could sit, or use it. I could go on and on but I just don't have any more time to waste on this company!

But then I explained to them exactly what I wanted moved. They gave me a good quote and a good price and great service. The movers got there early, and they were very polite and very friendly. I would use American Van Lines again if I needed to move. I would highly recommend them. I recommended them to my sister who just moved last weekend. She had a good experience, too.

Also, the moving crew was pleasant, very efficient, helpful, cordial and respectful. I would definitely recommend them because I did several other inquiries, so I did some comparison shopping. They were the most affordable, and so initially, I thought that I would get what I pay for, but that was not true. They actually exceeded expectations. The crew worked hard to ensure I was happy with the entire process from the start with the initial consultation, the planning until the arrival of the actual moving through.

I would recommend American Van Lines. My moving coordinator was very helpful. I had to end up making a couple of stops from my original destination, intermediate stops, and then the final destination, and she helped coordinate that, so it was a really good experience. The day of the move went well, except for one bad incident. One of the moving guys stepped in dog poop and brought it inside and walked across a custom rug I had had made. And so, I had to call the company that made the rug to see because I had contracted them, and they will clean the rug for free, but I didn't wanna leave poop until I could get them here to clean the rug. So, they told me what I could do in the interim and so we did that until they could get to my home to clean it the way it should be cleaned professionally.

That was a bit of a disaster. But the guy didn't mean to. He felt horrible. And the other crew members felt horrible because they felt like it reflected on them. They took like an hour off the cost of my move. They called the manager immediately and the manager said they'd adjust the cost of the hourly rates some way. Also, the guys were really nice. I went out and got breakfast and lunch for them. They were really good men. They were really accommodating with the stinky rug. I had them turn it one way because I really wanted it rolled out and put out so it could start to air-dry. And I had it put in one place, I didn't like where it was, and they were really nice about moving it to another place for me. I would use American Van Lines again.

The American Van Lines moving rep Toni was excellent. We’ve moved twice in the last six months and we used the same rep both times, and she was great. We sold our house and moved out of it, and we had to go to a storage unit in an apartment and then come from that apartment and stored unit into a new house. She helped us get both of those lined up and squared away. This last time, we had some challenges with timing, so she was very patient, kind and happy to reschedule. Leslie was the one who called to confirm and at the last minute, we had to make a change. She and Toni worked together to make it work for us. So, they were both extremely helpful.

We had a crew of four the first time, and a crew of four this time. My husband interacted with them more than I did but it went smoothly. We just noticed yesterday a little bit of furniture that we did not notice until last night from this time, so I will be reaching out to Toni about that because I'm not sure how to handle that. Other than that, American Van Lines got things in and got it taken care of for us.

I was really pleased with the movers that we had through American Van Lines. We had a 4,100 square-foot house, and every single one of the movers were organized. They were on-task and were really good. We had several antiques, and the people were really considerate of how to move the items. Just the old things were broken, the things that couldn't stand up to be strapped. We have an antique desk that the front got pushed in, then we had two Turkish coffee pots and the lid on one was broken. We had insurance and I filed an insurance claim, and it came up with four things for a total of $2,000 in damages.

Still, it was a really good experience especially considering how stressful a move is and the fact that we had so many antiques. We retired and sold our house, and we had 30 days to close. We got all of that done and moved out in 30 days. We were really stressed, and they were very considerate of that. The movers were friendly and you could tell that they were a team, that they work together and they enjoyed working together. I really enjoyed watching the interaction between them. If I moved again, I would call American Van Lines.

Moving from Salinas, California to Alva, Florida, we used American Van Lines and everything was set up fine. We panicked, though, because the storage facility that had all our things decided last minute to close on the scheduled pickup, which was a holiday. We had a really hard time getting through to someone because American Van Lines' office was also closed and it was after hours. But it ended up working out because they never showed up on that day anyway. And we didn't get a call, so we figured maybe it was just assumed that it was a legal holiday.

The following day, they showed up and they picked up everything. They were very fast loading and unloading. It's just took an extra-long time to get the things over here as it was a little longer than what they had estimated. And even though our load was underweight than the original estimate, they wouldn’t give us any discount. I was told that if we persist, we can get a little refund, but we didn't bother. Another thing, our ceramic umbrella holder was damaged. But it wasn’t a big deal and it’s not something we need to replace. Other than that, the people were very personable and helpful.

This is to anyone who is planning a move with American Van Lines. This place is totally dishonest and never to be trusted. I hired this place to move my things from Kansas to Maine, they kept changing the loading date, and when finally it was picked up, it took awhile to get to me and god knows where the things was at. But anyway when they delivered the things I had broken lamps that was not cheap by a long shot. I have damaged furniture, and the movers that drop the things off did not put the things in place like they advertise. And to top that off they left half of the things at the storage unit in Kansas after they agreed to from the start. And I have some things missing that cannot be replaced, bread cabinet, white wicker cedar lined chest, jewelry box with jewelry in it. I can tell right off that someone had gone through the boxes, because I packed them and I know me.

They bought a white wicker chest and I took one look on the inside to find out that they switched mine, and now I have who knows wicker chest that reminds me every time I look at it how I am a victim of a criminal act. I'm not just writing these things to get back at this company for the wrong they have done. I'm writing this review so that maybe I can save someone all the misery that this has caused me. Please people beware and cautious about this place. I have all the proof pictures and everything I need to show proof of these things. Before I hired them I read the reviews, but decided to use my own judgement and give this place a chance, WRONG choice. People can do or hire who you choose but beware. I knew I was making the wrong choice when they brokered out my contract to another company.

After I paid a deposit, very deceiving. I will not back down and be cheated this way. I could go on and on about how wrong I was done. Someone had stolen electrical cords that I use for Christmas decorations outside, I have a white comforter that someone or something had urinated on it. This is a vicious and cruel act. Cause me so much heartache and money because I paid someone to steal from me and destroy valuable items that cannot ever be replaced. Yelp I'm very upset, and will take all I have to get recovery from this devastating criminal activity.

NEVER NEVER NEVER USE AMERICAN VAN LINES MOVING COMPANY. I’M SORRY I DID!!! I picked American van lines moving company for their rating and review in consumer reports. How wrong they were!!! I will be contacting CONSUMER REPORTS to look into updating American Van lines rating to 0-stars! I made arrangements and docu signed necessary documents and paid the 50% required in March 2019 for a move the end of June 2019. It wasn’t until a week before the 3-day window that they were picking my belongings up which was June 21-23 and they hadn’t called me to review the list of items and give me an exact date for pickup like they said they would.

I ended up having to call several times and had to leave a message, never getting a call back. It wasn’t until the 21st which was the first day of the 3 day window that they called to say they overbooked and were basically pawning me off to another company they apparently use when they overbook (traditional express) to pick up my things and that they would be there the next day on the 22nd. The 22nd came and I called yet again when I didn’t hear anything and was told they were behind and I wouldn’t get picked up now until the 23, the last day of the 3-day window. If I hadn’t sold my house and was closing the 24th I would have cancelled with them and went with someone else. They finally showed in a truck that wasn’t even going to be the actual truck taking my things to my new location. There were only 2 men and one couldn’t even speak English.

Apparently they were taking my belongings to NJ from my location in NY to get unloaded then loaded again on another truck to be delivered. A week went by before I ended up calling them yet again having to leave yet another message as usual with no return call. Every time I called I could never speak to anyone that could help me. I asked to speak with a manager a couple of times when they did answer and only got put through to voicemail and still got no call back. No nothing.

It is 3 weeks now and many many calls later and I still don’t have my belongings or when they are arriving. Their customer services is the worst ever. After leaving numerous messages and probably speaking to everyone in the company by now and getting passed around I finally got a call saying my belongings were leaving NJ July 6th and should be here in 3-5 days. It’s is now July 10th, the 4th day of the 3-5 day window they gave me and again having trouble reaching my customer service rep or anyone for that matter.

I finally get through to them only to be told my belongings are still in NJ and that they must have gotten me mixed up with someone else. Needless to say I am extremely pissed. No wonder they make you sign a binding contract. They want to make sure they get their money and screw you. So now who knows when I will get my belongings or if they even know where the hell they are!!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!

He said he would give me a quote and that was followed up by a return phone call from my previous concierge through Angela, the service representative. She was the one who went through the process with me. We decided to go on a fixed-price firm quote rather than the one based on weight. The weight estimate sometimes fluctuate, so we went with a fixed-price. Then, she talked to their concierge vice-president who also spoke with me. He called to make sure that everything was doing okay and that the concierge service would be taking over from the customer service department, which I agreed to. They offered me a $500 discount as a repeat customer.

I was put in touch with the local representative who came by and gave me a moving inspection and figured out what had to be crated-in. From there, the driver showed up and he exercised great care in moving my personal possessions. He moved it all up and let me know well in advance when the delivery date would be. He coordinated the delivery to storage. On the arrival date, he showed up on-time. He got help and they knocked it out in no time at all. They drove away and they were happy. I’m happy too and it was a good experience all the way around. From start to finish, it was a top-shelf job. The whole process was very smooth and with little stress just like the first one.

I was moving from Florida to Iowa and went with American Van Lines. However, the process had a tendency to get confusing as to who was who and who did what. While all their reps seemed to be fine, I would talk to one person and they would transfer me to somebody else. I didn't like the huge window of when the move could happen. Also, American Van Lines gave me really short notice when I thought there would be more notice in that huge window. I had wanted to be picked up last and delivered last -- because we were in Florida and we were selling a house, and we wanted to be sure we had time to get the things picked up. Instead,

they picked us up last and immediately went to Iowa. Because we had to fly home, that made it kinda tough. That's weighing in the favor of American Van Lines to where they keep all their flexibility but they eliminate a lot of their customer’s flexibility. That time, I had already bought our airline tickets and hotel rooms.

We had a remodel going on in Spirit Lake and the flooring just barely got in under the wire because they delivered it three days after they picked it up. It gave me leverage on the people getting the flooring done. American Van Lines could be a little more customer-friendly in terms of giving us more notice. I have a hard time believing that they figured things out the day they told me the move was gonna be three days 'cause they had to notify all the other people.

Even so, we’re glad the move happened the way it did. During the move, the crew was very good. The people who packed my things and traveled with the driver are different people and so were the guys who unpacked. The driver was the same. He found an issue during the move which was a stand which was a stand for an outdoor umbrella on which a plastic piece broke. Overall, we had a good experience with American Van Lines. Going with them worked out well for us.

I didn't feel pressure whatsoever, compared to the other two. I told my son-in-law, and he researched as well. He said, "Go with it," so we did.

Our coordinator, Elena, was phenomenal. She kept me informed at all times. I made several changes and there was no hiccups, no obstacles, no anything of the sort. She was right on it. She made the changes and sent me the paperwork immediately. Everything went smoothly. Our consultant, Kevin, was very, very informative. He didn't leave any small print. He explained everything from A to Z and gave me a ballpark of what was gonna be the final quote. With the changes and everything, there was no problem. Actually, it became lower than what he had quoted originally with the first inventory which I was extremely pleased as well.

The two guys that came and moved my stuff were clean-cut and very polite. They were right there at the dot when they said they were gonna be there. They were fast and very conscious of whatever was to be moved. I was amazed that they were done. I had the rest of the day to myself. The crew that delivered my stuff down here in Texas came a day earlier, and they called me to see if it was okay to deliver. They didn't just show up like other companies. I have moved cross country at least ten times over that past several years for my job. AVL has got to be the worst movers ever! Have been lied to several times. 2 people show up when I was quoted 4. Pick up delayed 3 times due to their resource issues. Incurred extra cost as the person completing the inventory missed several large furniture items. “Made” mirror boxes by taping other boxes together, then tried to charge me $17/box vs the cost of the boxes used to “make” the mirror box. Did not wrap my furniture until it was OUTSIDE to be put on the truck.

Had put my dogs in day care for 8 hours (which should have been enough time (if they would have arrived on time and had all 4 people)). Had to pick up the dogs at 5, and now they’ve been outside in 90 degree weather for 3 hours (yes, I had ice and water for them), I couldn’t take them inside in the AC because the movers still weren’t done. Incurred extra costs for a hotel due the extra time it took to pack and load. The “coordinator” Rebecca was basically useless and shouldn’t be in a customer facing job! Once the quote was complete, couldn’t get anyone to call/email me back when I had questions. My recommendation is FIND SOMEONE ELSE. If you must use this service, buy the insurance, you will need it to replace your household goods. Oh, and of course, document everything!

I googled moving companies and opted for American Van Lines because when I called and talked to their rep that set it all up for me, I was really impressed with her professionalism and her desire to make the transaction easy for us. We've been in our house for 36 years, and we had a lot of stuff. The driver was scheduled for another stop, but we totally filled the truck so he told them he would not put anything else on the truck. So, the planned weight was way short. It cost more money than what we planned on, but I knew we were gonna have more weight.

I also had trouble getting through to the customer service person once and then I called back to the person that set everything up for us. She got through to them and they called me right back. And we got what we needed. There was just some damage to our stuff, and part of that has been handled. I paid extra $85 to have a washer and dryer in there, and things were put on top of it. The dryer had some dents in it. It was a brand-new dryer, which I had for less than a month. When I talked to them, I got a refund on the $85 for each item because there were things stacked on it. Truthfully, I don’t think they would have been able to get everything in there if they hadn’t. And then, one of my sleigh beds got some things on it.

But if you compare it to what they were moving and how hard they had to work at it, it was a minor compared to what it could have been, what other nightmares I've heard about moving. The highlight of the whole thing is that the crew was excellent. They really did a good job. Both the crew that loaded and the crew that unloaded were excellent subcontractors. It was a lot of work but they stayed on the job and got my stuff loaded in one day.

This was the first time my family and I were moving to another state and were preparing for the worst. I searched consumer ratings for the best interstate moving company and they did not disappoint. American Van Lines has a top notch team that will help you every step of the way. Joseph in sales, Isabel and Lou Ella in customer service, Emily in quality assurance, and the two gentlemen that packed, picked up, and dropped off our furniture were always available to answer any questions I had. I would gladly use them again and recommend them to everyone!

American Van Lines did an excellent job on our move from North Carolina to Florida. They were very professional, polite and responsive. We did the packing and they did the loading and transportation, and it all worked out very well. The crew was the best. They came in and were set up and ready to go within a matter of minutes. They were nonstop. I was blown away by how fast they got everything done and it was really quality work. Everything was wrapped and loaded correctly, no damage on arrival. The only thing that my wife would have asked to be done differently is that the driver could have given her a copy of the inventory on arrival. Other than that, everything was as it should be. I moved a lot over the years ‘cause I was in the military for 20 years and then in Corporate America for the last 20 years, and these guys were probably one of the best ever that I've worked with.

I was impressed by their attention to detail and willingness to work through us being new to professional moving companies. They were overall courteous, caring and understanding. They found humor in some of the stupid questions we had to ask.

The move was approximately 12 miles and it was 98% planned out. There were a few minor things that we didn't understand but the 3 guys were exceptional, and I'm comparing that to many local moving companies over the past 10 years that we've had to be abused by. Those 3 gentlemen were concerned. They were working so hard in horrible heat, but they kept going. They concerned me 'cause they didn't take any breaks. They were willing to stop and answer questions. They knew what they were doing and they had it organized. The driver was organized and they did have a new person who was training, and they all just did a fantastic job. I couldn't be more pleased. It all went well.

Hired American Van Lines for move from WA state to AZ. They changed the date twice on me, almost two weeks later than scheduled. Both changes done on or near moving date. Driver shows up and tells me the move will be twice as much, I won't sign the paperwork. Told him it was videotape, every room for American Van Lines and the weight could not double. He then told me he would do the move if I paid him $2800.00 on the side and pay American Van Lines the original quote. I paid him $1400.00 and was able to record everything on my phone as proof. The other $1400.00 was to be paid on the AZ side.

I let American Van Lines know what had happened. They said they would make it right. This was a full pack move by the way due to my health which American Van Lines know. I drive two days to AZ, American Van Lines calls me the day after I arrive and tells me they fired the driver and picked up the trailer, which they wanted to deliver that day. Truck shows up and they hire to people of the street to unload it. They finished at 3am in the morning leaving furniture on the curb and a bed, sofa, loveseat, large screen tv and chairs in the detached garage. This move was a nightmare and completely unprofessional. I don't post reviews but this had be said.

Patrick indicated that he would send me a “link” that I could download on my phone in order to take video/images of my possessions. He stated that this was necessary to get an accurate estimate. Anyway, after getting off the phone I waited for the link. After not getting it by the next morning, I called Patrick back to find out what happened. He wasn’t in so I left a voicemail message. I called again in the afternoon and he answered saying that he just got in after a doctor’s appointment. I told him that I never got the link and he said he sent it to the wrong number and would resend it to me. Well, I still didn’t get it. By the next day, I felt that I had wasted enough time and got another mover. I had received an earlier email from Patrick that included an inventory list which I filled out and submitted, but still no response. I guess he didn’t want my business???? ‍♂️

Last month I moved from Southeast Fl to West Coast Fl. From the first contact with Brain **, moving consultant to Victoria, our move coordinator to the two fellows who moved us, the move went perfectly. Brian was spot on his estimate and very helpful by bringing us boxes and packing material so we could get started. He also checked in and was virtually present at all time. Victoria called prior to the move. Told us what would be happening, set the scheduled and verified the cost. And also did several follow-up during and after the move.

But I can't say enough about the movers (I'm sorry I am not sure of their names. I believe one was Jay but I've forgotten the other). They arrived exactly on time. They were personable from the moment they got out of the truck. They were very professional. They went to work immediately and did not stop working until everything was packed an on the truck. They scheduled the time for the next day and worked with my schedule. Again, were on time and were diligent with the unpacking and assisting us placing furniture and boxes. They were courteous, respectful and polite at all times. It was a pleasure dealing with them. Moving is a stressful event. I hate it. I needed to move from CA to FL. AVL, had decent ratings and decent prices compared to other long haul pack and move companies. So I decided to go with them. BAD IDEA. On 5/28, I was contacted and told my pick up would be 5/30 between 10 am-2 pm. No phone call, no show, no reason. I called the company from 12-2:36 pm repeatedly and finally was told they didn’t know what happened and my move was now for 6/1. So here I am paying for extra days at my apartment, a change in my ticket home to FL, an additional day on car rental, and my pick up time was 9-12. Now I’m told 12-1... I have yet to hear from the movers who are a contract company to AVL.

My suggestion stay away, Also, if you use them and they don’t deliver as promised. File a complaint with your respective states PUC (public utilities commission) along with leaving an accurate rating of their less than stellar services here on ConsumerAffairs and Google and Yelp and any other form of social media review you possibly can. A supervisor has offered to rectify the situation via “compensation” but couldn’t even give me an idea for that. $5.2k for the move alone. I expect far more than being sent to voicemail and being told “We can’t reach your pick up company.” This is a very unprofessional and dishonest company. Stay away. Far away. Let my lesson be warning to all. This isn’t the company you want doing any work for you.

Mike and Alex made an exceptional moving team. This all started with my getting a quote from this company to move my belongings fro Stuart Fl to Gulf Shores Al. I called and talked with the “sales” person. He told me to itemize all my furniture and estimate the number of boxes I would have. When I asked him what he wasn’t sending a rep out to do the est... His reply was “we do this all the time”. Now I realize that it’s a ploy to give you a low ball estimate to get your business then they have you sign a disclaimer that actual cost is based on weight. I had another est (much more realistic from another company).

When the three guys came out the first comment was “Oh you have real furniture... Not Ikea furniture. We can pick it up with one hand”. They sent out a truck that wasn’t large enough to hold my load (it already had two other persons' furniture shipment ). An hour into the move all my neighbors started telling me, "There’s no way they’re going to get your furniture on this van." I keep questioning the driver and he assured me they could get everything on this load. Of course at 5:00pm that afternoon he admitted all my belongings weren’t going to make it on this load. So he put in a request for another truck. It caused all kind of issues for me. I had to be at my closing the next day and couldn’t wait for the truck... So I had to give one of my neighbors “Power of Attorney” to allow the second shipment.

The first load was delivered two days later and second shipment over a week later. I had an expensive new rug that was still in original plastic wrapping... They used box cuter to open it and apparently put a 6” slice in the new rug. I didn’t catch the damage until several days later when I vacuumed it. Also the most expensive piece of furniture (Link Taylor armoire) I have was damaged. When the movers were bringing it in the head guy in charge also went into a panic when the other two put all the weight on the legs. I thought at the time how strange a reaction. A couple of weeks later I noticed the legs separating! I had a furniture repairman come out and he told me someone had tried to glue this together... truly think they damaged it in moving from my previous home and attempted to repair while this shipment was in storage for a week.

No way can anyone account for all damage or missing items on the day of delivery... I had a hand painted book case missing, a TV. And damage to the rug and dinning buffet. I sent the pictures of missing items and damage. My move pick up was on Dec 6th and 7th. Just today I received a letter asking me to settle for $150.00. They operate a bait and switch type operation. Unless you take out additional ins. They only pay .60 on the dollar based on the weight. Just a warning... Be extra careful dealing with these people. Lots of fine print. And don’t be fooled by the sales dept that “they do estimates all the time over the phone”. Use a company that sends out their rep and is somewhat bound to honor their representative est of cost... Not a lay person whose belonging are being shipped!! My move cost me $7500+ in lieu of the $3800. That was quoted to me.

There were several things about working with AVL that culminated into a negative customer experience. Yes, our things did get delivered within their 3-week window and everything was accounted for but not without distress. 1. AVL has their sales pitch down to a tee. We called and spoke with a phenomenal sales consultant who walked us through a website that showcased how many trailers AVL owns (50+ owned! Minimal need to give our job to a third party) vs a competitor (only owned 2 trucks and would for sure send to a third party) we were comparing a quote against. He assured us they are "The BEST" for these kinds of moves. At almost $1000 more, we trusted we would get what we paid for.

    2. Movers (NOT AVL - A THIRD PARTY in "Sprinter vans") showed up 4 hours late to pick up our pieces. Original window, 2-6. They showed up between 7:30-8PM. We didn't have much, a 1 bedroom apartment. We had to miss our going away party with friends we had scheduled for the evening. 3. Still feeling positive about the choice our consultant said the pieces left NJ on May 1 and should arrive the following week. Great! 4. We arrive in Seattle and wait... May 7th turned into Wednesday the 15th. The driver, a NEW THIRD PARTY not affiliated with the company who picked up our things, said they couldn't deliver to our apartment with the larger truck and we would have to pay an ADDITIONAL $300 to transport to a smaller truck (literally a U-HAUL) to get to us. Meanwhile, we live on a large, open, 4 lane road where many busses and trucks commute regularly. We argued this but to no avail.

    5. Our pieces arrive, IN SAID U-HAUL, with a driver who was lovely, but said he was the middleman and had no say in if the truck would fit on our street. As pieces started being brought in EVERY BOX looked like it had been through HELL. Things marked fragile/glass were clearly beaten up and broken, boxes with clothes had busted at the seams. He said it was because we used Home Depot boxes. If movers see HD boxes not withstanding cross country moves, why not alert us of that AVL?

All in all, we felt extremely taken advantage of considering that we were sold on working with a company that is excellent, an A on the BBB. Meanwhile we feel we were forced into paying more money, our things were NOT handled with care, and the whole experience left a bitter taste. We will not be working with AVL nor recommending them ever again.

We had a short timeline and were kind of scared that we wouldn’t get out when we were supposed to. But we were able to close on our house at the right time whenever they showed up and everything went good.

As far as the move goes, my stuff had to be put in a storage locker. And when we finally were able to get our stuff out of the storage locker, there were some items that were not sitting in the right way. They were stacked too high up and the heavy stuff was on the lighter boxes so we had some crushed stuff. But the two guys that were doing it, were very nice. They let us know when they were coming, where they were at, when they’d be there, when they’re leaving and when they’d show up -- the whole nine yards. So, they did a good job about that. They have good prices and the staff are awesome.

They were real honest about the weight of the truck as well, because they showed us the ticket when they weighted it empty and then when they weighted it full. Anything you could challenge them on about kind of ripping you off, never happened. They’re really upfront. They always called us and were on time. They were very pleasurable to be around.

Everything that I had asked her, she came back with an appropriate answer and I was pleased with how her answers were. Aside from that, I was by myself at the time and unable to complete the packing myself, so they sent guys to help me finish packing and they packed up well. Then, they got my stuff here in good timing and they unloaded it into a storage unit.

The bad part was, the things that were supposed to come did not come and the things that were not supposed to come did come. And it wasn’t really till I got here in Florida and moved into a place and started unpacking that I realized what happened. It's been very disappointing. But I lived in a house that had a large upstairs and basement, and at the time, I was trying to run up and down telling them which ones would go and which one wouldn't. So, there was kind of a miscommunication with the guys because somebody else would come and pack there and didn’t know that I said that it should't be packed. Also, I did not tell American Van Lines about that because there was no way to go back and get those things. It was done, so I didn’t know what else should be done.

The only other thing was, when they had to pack some of my stuff, they used paper. But my things should’ve been packed with bubble paper or something else that was more protective as I have found several things that have been broken and they're not replaceable. Other than that, the crew was great, very helpful and very professional.

American Van Lines and I resolved this to my satisfaction.

    Original Review: April 30, 2019

I hired American Van Lines for a 90 miles move that I had and they were easy to work with. And the lady, Toni, was extremely helpful. My house was for sale so she went online ahead of time to look at all the pictures to get an estimate as to what the weights may be, and then worked from there. She was flexible in scheduling.

However, the way American Van Lines did their billing was very unfair. I told the guy who came over about that, and it took him probably two hours on phone calls to go back to whoever he would go back to to work out. And then they went in my favor, but it was just frustrating because that was two hours that my household goods sat there in front of the apartment. So there was a delay with the service. They had ran out hours and that put me in a real bind because I got this thing scheduled two months in advance. I was extremely frustrated and disappointed that American Van Lines didn’t do something to work with me as a customer. I had to be out and then get the house cleaned for the move-in, and I had to move in an apartment.

Even so, the moving crew was fine. They did their job and they were easy to work with. But I would definitely make sure there’s a big clarification financially. And the way it worked is - we had an agreement that I would be charged X number of dollars per hour for a pod that had to get loaded. But then I ended up getting charged not only the per hour cost. I get charged for the weight of the boxes as well. So it was almost like I was double-charged. I was so frustrated that when I disagreed and we did it, I still really felt I was not treated fairly.

I was moving to Florida and I asked my daughter to help me find a moving company. She found American Van Lines that was based in Florida and we thought that it would work out well because the drivers and the workers will end up back at their home base. Their price was fair because they charge by the weight. I had three workers. One was the driver, but he had to help load also. And then the other two were doing most of the work. The driver did most of the paperwork. But they all worked very hard. I was called by one of the representatives at American Van Lines while they were helping me and loading the truck, to see if they were doing a good job. I told him they were doing a good job and he said I have their best crew, which I was glad to hear. They were very careful with my belongings. I had no damage. They packed it up and then they drove to Florida.

When they came to Florida, they put everything where I asked them to. They put things together that they had had to take apart, like the legs off of tables. I have some glass top tables and they were careful about that. I also have two china cabinets that have glass shelves in them and they very carefully put all the shelves in. They were really good workers, and very thorough. It didn't seem like they were rushed or they were trying to get done in a hurry.

I had a couple of broken dishes, but it was no big deal. Everything was wonderful. My only problem was that it took three weeks for them to deliver my furniture. I had thought it would be faster than that. From my house in Arizona, I was told that they went to California, and then they went to Texas. But then, they had to wait for some time for some person in Texas to pay them. And then eventually, they were able to get to Florida. I had to sleep on a cot while I waited and it was uncomfortable for me. I just kept thinking any minute, they would show up. When they got here, they were efficient, extremely courteous and very capable. If I have to move again, I would use American Van Lines and I would recommend them to people that I knew were moving.

When I called American Van Lines, one of the things that I wanted was a move which would not entail having the goods transferred to a warehouse and being held there. The initial moving coordinator and I talked about this in some depth and he said that my stuff would be picked up directly by a truck that would be going up. But then, as it turned out, they were taken to a warehouse where they waited for a substantial amount of time. So he made guarantees when he should not have had.

Then, the times were long. Both the pick-up and the delivery happened outside of the windows that were given to us. While we were given something in compensation for that, still, it happened. But in the end, the move went well and all of our goods were delivered without harm so we were pleased with all that we got. The movers on either end were very responsible as well. One of the movers who loaded my stuff was the warehouse manager. Overall, we were relatively happy with American Van Lines.
